Student Soloists Gabriel Ong, oboe Gabriel is a senior at Olympia High School and studies oboe with Alex and Karen Gheorghiu. He has been a part of SOGO since his freshman year of high school. He plans to study computer science in college while also staying involved with music, whether that's through lessons with the faculty or through participating in the university orchestra. In his free time, he enjoys playing disc golf and tennis.

Ryan Kapsandy, bassoon I joined the band under the teaching of Greg Allison on clarinet in fifth grade but moved to bass clarinet and finally bassoon in middle school. I then started studying bassoon privately with Lantz Berets and have been since. I've had the privilege of playing in the All-State Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. This year I'm participating in the WMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival in the bassoon solo, small, and large woodwind ensemble categories. As for my post-high school plans, I'd like to continue my education at a university. I've also been working offseason on my pole vaulting skills in preparation for track.

Committed to providing very playable, great sounding instruments, within your budget. High quality string repairs Best rental instruments available Professional set up and restoration

Cameron May Music Director and Conservatory Orchestra Conductor

Conductors

Greg Allison Artistic Director, Brass Choir Conductor, and Academy Orchestra Conductor

Greg Allison received his B.A. and M.A. in Music Education from Western Washington University where he studied trumpet with the late William D. Cole. Mr. Allison had taught instrumental music in the Olympia School District for 40 years. His bands have been chosen to perform at the State and Northwest Music Educators’ Conference and the Western International Band Clinic. Cameron May is Music Director of SOGO and Professor of Music at South Puget Sound Community College. At SPSCC, Mr. May conducts the SPSCC Symphony Orchestra, directs the SPSCC Jazz Band, and teaches courses in ear training and music fundamentals. Though a native of Portland, Oregon, Mr. May came to Olympia from Champaign, Illinois, where he was Music Director of the Illini Strings at the University of Illinois. Mr. May received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado Boulder and a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He continues to maintain his violin playing through his position as Assistant Principal Second Violin with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra. When not conducting, teaching, or playing violin, Mr. May can be found reading on his back porch, walking in the woods, or going out of his way to chase after Amtrak trains.

Mr. Allison has performed in the Northwest Wind Symphony, the 22nd Ave Dixieland Band, the Tacoma Concert Band, and the Evergreen Brass Quintet. He has been a guest adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor for state and regional festivals and conventions including the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. He has served on the Washington Music Educator’s board of directors, managed WMEA High School and Junior AllState, and was a recipient of the WMEA Teacher of the Year for middle level education. In 2014, he was inducted into the WMEA Hall of Fame.

SOGO is a proud member of League of American Orchestras and Washington State Federation of Music Clubs.

Jordan Goldstein Debut Orchestra Conductor (Strings)

In addition to serving as the string specialist for SOGO’s Debut Orchestra, Jordan Goldstein is the newly appointed orchestra teacher at Washington Middle School and Centennial and McKenny Elementary Schools. Once a student of the Olympia school district, Mr. Goldstein has since received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Puget Sound, as well as a Master of Music in Viola Performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. As a violist, Mr. Goldstein has studied under Lisa Dyvig, Joyce Ramée, and Mark Braunstein and has performed with many groups throughout the Puget Sound and Chicago area, including the Olympia and Rainier Symphony orchestras. When not playing or teaching, Mr. Goldstein can be seen enjoying a cup of tea, watching old movies, or searching for a new and exciting animal fact. Jordan is honored to once again be back in the South Puget Sound area, giving back to the community that helped shape him and foster his love for music.

Dan Craig Debut Orchestra Conductor (Winds) Dan Craig is in his eighth year as the Director of Bands for the Napavine School District. He received his BA in both Music Education and Tuba Performance from Central Washington University and earned his MS in Curriculum and Instruction. Mr. Craig is an award-winning Tuba player, performing regularly throughout the region. He is a member of the Evergreen Brass Ensemble, the Northwest Wind Symphony, St. Martins Wind Ensemble, and the South Puget Sound Community College Orchestra. Mr. Craig studied Tuba with Marty Erickson at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee where he won the Peck School of the Arts Concerto Competition as a freshman. Mr. Craig was the principal Tuba for both the Wind Ensemble under Larry Gookin and the Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Nikolas Caoile while at CWU and has performed at many Low Brass Clinics and Symposiums throughout the country. Mr. Craig is extremely excited to be conducting the Debut Orchestra and is looking forward to a great season of music-making!

Elizabeth Ward Brass Choir Assistant Conductor Elizabeth Ward received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington and a Master of Musical Arts degree from Yale School of Music. Ms. Ward is a former member of the New Haven Symphony, Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra, Pennsylvania Orchestra, Philadelphia Opera Orchestra and Young Audiences Inc. of Philadelphia. Future Music Makers Scholarship Fund

Although our fees to participate in SOGO are reasonable, they are still a barrier for many families. We believe the benefits young musicians gain from participating in SOGO’s programs should not be prohibitive because of economic circumstances. For that reason, SOGO is reaching out to begin building the Future Music Makers Scholarship Fund. Children interested in joining SOGO have their family member complete a simple application form. Based on their interest and demonstrated financial need, up to half the tuition fees can be awarded. All information is kept confidential. The Future Music Makers Scholarship Fund is supported by committed community members to prevent financial circumstances from becoming an obstacle to any young musician’s participation in SOGO’s orchestras. A robust fund will ensure that all young musicians will have equal opportunity to experience the high-quality programming SOGO offers the South Sound area.
