Introducing a new range of natural anti-ageing extracts from Australia...
Demand for natural, plant-derived anti-ageing actives remains strong for skincare products. Australian-grown plants are largely under-exploited as a source of unique and effective plant extracts. Australian Bioactives is pleased to present a new range of highly concentrated, water-soluble and solvent-free plant extracts from Australian-grown and endemic Australian plants, with demonstrated anti-oxidant, antityrosinase, anti-collagenase and anti-elastase activity at low loading levels. These extracts represent new opportunities for formulations to headline new sources, new bioactives, clean extracts and new provenance. The production and extraction base for Australian Bioactives is based largely in Tasmania, an Australian island and state, situated 240 km south of mainland Australia (42째S 147째E). Tasmania is renowned for its pristine environment, rich in temperate rainforest, rugged mountains, fastflowing unspoiled rivers and fertile soils. Tasmania has a cool, temperate climate and comparatively high UVradiation due to its location. Plants growing in Tasmania naturally develop a relatively high intrinsic content of polyphenolic compounds which are expected
to deliver in vivo anti-oxidant activity. Tasmania has a strong heritage of plantation production and processing of natural plant extracts for the flavour, personal care and pharmaceutical industries. Many of the companies involved are part of the Australian Bioactives Consortium which is also funded by the Australian Government. The plants extracted to formulate the new Australian Bioactives range represent sustainable resources: the plants are grown in plantations, or plantations are being developed currently. Australian Bioactives captures the true essence of a selection of Australian-grown and endemic Australian plants in water soluble, superconcentrated extracts. This new range of extracts all have very high polyphenol content and anti-oxidant activity and with additional activity inhibiting elastase, collagenase and tyrosinase: all key enzymes which have been shown to accelerate the visible signs of ageing. Please see the individual information sheets for each of our new extracts under development and commercialisation.

Introducing a new range of natural anti-ageing extracts from Australia... Australian Bioactives Extract #1 Australian Bioactives Extract #1 is a powdered hydrophilic extract from the stems of a Tasmanian-grown berry plant. To our knowledge, this part of the plant has not been extracted in this way before. This extract has significant polyphenolic content and is comparatively bioactive as an inhibitor for tyrosinase and elastase. The extract thus has potential application for anti-ageing and skin-lightening bioactivity at low loading levels. The plant is cultivated in the Coal River Valley in Tasmania, which is well known as the perfect cool climate environment for producing Australia’s finest Pinot Noir wine. The stems of the plant are a by-product of commercial cultivation of the fruit crop, and are harvested sustainably from plantations, and dried on a pilot-scale in Tasmania. The extract is prepared using a clean, green solvent-free process and super-concentrated using a low temperature, rapid drying method following by milling into powder. Australian Bioactives Extract #1 is extremely hydrophilic, with low colour and no aroma.
Content: Australian Bioactives Extract #1 contains a comparatively high content of diverse phenolics, none of them flavonoids. Gallic acid is present at 4.0% and total phenolics at 17% Gallic Acid Equivalents (quantified by comparison with relevant standards via HPLC-MS). Tyrosinase inhibition: Australian Bioactives Extract #1 showed 95% inhibition of tyrosinase when tested at 2mg. ml-1; equivalent to 86 mg.ml-1 Kojic Acid. Elastase inhibition: Australian Bioactives #1 showed 28% elastase inhibition at 10 mg.ml-1, equivalent to 1.0 mg.ml-1 epigallocatechin gallate. Potential applications: Australian Bioactives Extract #1 has potential skin-lightening and elastase inhibition bioactivity at cost effective loading levels, with no flavonoids. This extract represents a new source of a new extract from a known plant.
