It is also the season to give to the less fortunate. In this issue we look at people who have given their time and talent and donated their artworks towards the Xmas Angel Exhibition. Proceeds from this exhibition will go to Olievenhoutbosh disability centre. A festival is to celebrate a certain thing, a market means crafts and self made products and a flea market means Chinese junk.. Dina Silva 8
According to the concise OXFORD dictionary: Market:
The gathering of people for the purchase and sale of provisions, livestock, etc. especially with a number of vendors. An open space or covered building used for this. A demand for commodity or service. A place or group providing such a demand.
Festival:
A day or period of celebration, religious or secular. A concentrated series of concerts, plays, etc. held regularly in a town, etc.
Show::
Spectacle, display, exhibition A collection of ,etc. shown for public entertainment
Fair: An art festival covers a wide range of art. This includes performing arts and even hand crafts. This is normally in the form of a fair/market. An art festival takes many demands into consideration, including food. Specific markets like an art market, craft market, farmers market, will speak to a demand e.g. a farmers market will sell farm products like fresh vegetables and eggs. Johanna Kruger Prinsloo 9
Selling My Own Product Agents vs Distributors If selling your product requires a salesman's or sales-woman's call, using an independent sales representative may be more efficient than having sales personnel on your payroll. This will depend on your situation. Selling for others is the business of independent sales agents. They make their money by representing several clients on a commission basis. They solicit orders for clients in territories upon which they have agreed. Some agents have employees who help them cover a wide area. The manufacturers, as a rule, ship and bill the customer directly. They set prices, terms and other conditions of sale. Sales agents go by various names. A few examples are manufacturer's agent, manufacturer's representative and "reps. The labels vary according to the industry. Also, the marketing functions which agents perform vary from one industry to another. 10
Agents can do transactions on your behalf.
A distributor tends to be a company with assets.

Distributors give after sales service like warranties.
It is advisable to sign an agreement with an agent.

Agents vs Distributors In South Africa, the terms "agent" and "distributor" have very specific meanings. Agents: In the strict legal sense, "agent" means a person who, for and on behalf of a principal, either introduces a third party to the principal by soliciting orders from the third party, concludes contracts with the third party on behalf of the principal. The normal reward for an agent is a commission, which is received from the principal. Key considerations in appointing an agent in South Africa are: You need to appoint an agent who knows your market well. The South African business sector is relatively small, and companies have established methods of procurement that differ from sector to sector.
You need to consider national distribution. South Africa is a large country, with nine provinces. Lacking the support of national infrastructure, smaller agents often tend to operate provincially.
You need to appoint an agent who knows your market well. This means you may need to appoint an agent in each of the larger cities – Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban – to cover the country. Larger companies who take on agencies often have an office in each of the major centres, making any agency agreement easier to control.
12
For certain products, South Africa is a trading hub for the southern African region, and you need to consider whether your South African agent should handle business in these countries on your behalf.
When appointing a distributor in South Africa, the same considerations apply as when appointing an agent. Distributors: A distributor buys and holds stock of a product. In return, they are usually granted an exclusive right to sell the product in a particular area or to a particular type of customer. An agreement with a distributor is similar to an agreement with an agent, except that price and delivery terms will differ because the distributor is a principal.
When appointing a distributor in South Africa, the same considerations apply as when appointing an agent. Read more: http://www.southafrica.info/business/trade/import/ distribution.htm#.VjEGtzaheuU#ixzz3psvrxXUW

Meerkatkolonie in Rosendal (Eastern Free State) is a beautiful little gallery that houses the works of artists Dahla Hulme (whom I’ve featured here before) and Michelle Nigrini. We spent last weekend there and if, like me, you’re enchanted by art, handmade things and dusty roads littered with lazy dogs, then this is the town for you. You’ll find Dahla and Henriette, with their Golden Retrievers on the stoep, making beautiful things by hand; whilst Josephina gives you the grand tour and proudly showcases her handmade dolls. I’ll have to do another post to show you some of the other gems in this quaint little one donkey town (multiple donkeys if Henriette has her way), but in the mean time you can find more info here:

The San Bushmen, Africa's oldest hunter-gatherers, lived in the massive Drakensberg range of mountains from 4 000 years ago until they were driven out by colonialists in the 19th century. Over that time, they created a vast body of art on the walls of caves and rock shelters – the largest and most concentrated group of rock paintings in sub-Saharan Africa.
"The authenticity of the paintings, and their shelter and cave settings, as a reflection of the beliefs of the San peoples, are without question."
This rich collection prompted UNESCO to inscribe the Drakensberg as a mixed natural and cultural world heritage site in 2000. The paintings, Unesco said, "represent the spiritual life of the San people" and are "outstanding both in quality and diversity of subject". "The San people lived in the mountainous Drakensberg area for more than four millennia, leaving behind them a corpus of outstanding rock art, which throws much light on their way of life and their beliefs," UNESCO said.
20
South African art has always taken on the unique flavour of the country, from the 4 000-year-old cave paintings of the San Bushmen – the richest collection of rock art in Africa – to the homegrown conceptual art movement that sprang up as apartheid came to an end in the 1990s.

While the "high art" continues to blossom in South Africa, the market for crafts has expanded to include every possible form of traditional artwork.
"folk art" has made inroads into "high art". For example, in the 1990s the work of late ceramicist Bonnie Ntshalintshali went well

Sekhukhune's surrounds are home to nature reserves, wilderness areas and natural attractions, like the foot-shaped rock called God's Footprint, or Lenao la Modimo in Sapedi, Echo Stone, and Mona Meetse Spring which is believed to be inhabited by a legendary water spirit. The nearby village of Roossenekal in Sekhukhune is famed for its spectacular showing of rare yellow arum lilies in spring, celebrated with a local festival. The main towns in Sekhukhune are Marble Hall and Groblersdal. 24
Sekhukhune offers you a fascinating insight into the cultural heritage of both the Bapedi and Ndebele people, whose history here extends back hundreds of years. The Kamoka Open Africa Route is a self-drive route that takes you to graves and battle sites, cultural villages and heritage sites. The name Kamoka is a Pedi word meaning ‘together' and the route is characterized by an interesting mix of two cultures and two provinces, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. At Ledingwe Cultural Village, you can go on a guided tour that reveals the history and heritage of the Ndebele people. Visit the ancestral kraal of the ancient Ndebele king, King Mayhisha III; visit traditional homesteads and meet artists in their studios, find out about the fascinating folklore and mythology of the Ndebele - and even do a traditional dance or have your fortunes told by a sangoma (traditional healer). Traditionally the Ndebele decorated their homes in bold and bright geometric patterns, and you can still see wonderful examples of this. The Ndebele have a proud artistic history which includes elaborate costumes and jewellery, beadwork and painting. You can also take a tour of Tjate, a heritage site that commemorates the cultural heritage of the Bapedi people. Hear about the great valley of the Bapedi kings, from King Diale of the 16th century to King Sekhukhune who ruled in the 18th century. Local guides bring to life the brave battles fought here, and you can wander the battle sites and gravesides of fallen Bapedi, Boer and British soldiers, including that of King Sekhukhune himself. 25

Impressionism Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s. 34
Impressionism can be considered the first distinctly modern movement in painting. Developing in Paris in the 1860s, its influence spread throughout Europe and eventually the United States. Its originators were artists who rejected the official,
government-sanctioned exhibitions, or salons, and were consequently shunned by powerful academic art institutions. In turning away from the fine finish and detail to which
most artists of their day aspired, the Impressionists aimed to capture the momentary, sensory effect of a scene - the impression objects made on the eye in a fleeting instant. To achieve this effect, many Impressionist artists moved from the studio to the streets and countryside, painting in plain air.

Edgar Degas (19 July 1834 – 27 September 1917), born Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, was a French artist famous for his work in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing. He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draughtsman, he is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are considered to be among the finest in the history of art. http://www.edgar-degas.org/

"Although I studied Fashion Design and Art, my adventurous spirit started to bloom again after my first art class at Charlien Muller. I realised I needed to follow through on my passion after I won second price in the pumpkin festival art competition. Its enchanted to see what I can create with only my hands.
I love to experiment with different mediums, texture and lots of vibrant colour. This competition truly made way for my new lust for art. I don’t want to be like everybody else‌ just true to myself. I want to break the rules and just make good art. Welcome to my new chapter.

CHARLENE MEGIT DATE OF BIRTH: 7 August 1995 PLACE OF BIRTH: Pietersburg, Limpopo I was born in Limpopo, one of twin daughters, the youngest of four children. We moved to Pretoria in 1998. I attended Laerskool Swartkop and matriculated at Hoërskool Tuine. I took visual art as a subject from grade 10 till matric. Originally I wanted to study graphic arts but I decided to study my bachelor’s degree in Communication Science part-time at Unisa.
“Being part of Charlien Muller’s art class opened so many doors for me.” In my part- time I paint (at request for family and friends as well), sketch and experiment with various mediums. SA TAXI HAS ANNOUNCED AN EXCITING NEW ADDITION TO THE VISUAL ARTS CALENDAR OF SOUTH AFRICA: SA TAXI FOUNDATION ART AWARD! While the commuter world of taxis seems far from the world of the contemporary art gallery, for some time the SA Taxi’s shareholders have quietly been supporting emerging contemporary South African artists by acquiring their works. Through their SA Taxi Foundation, they have now got behind the wheel of the SA Taxi Foundation Art Award, which is an innovative new competition that aims to bridge the divide between high art, contemporary culture and the vast population of South Africans using our public transport daily.
There are a number of good reasons to support the arts, but as a business, ours is clear. With access to 40% of the commuter population in South Africa through our network of financed taxi owners, we see a direct way that we can impact on the art industry through exposure, while creating a unique way to promote the benefit of taxis as an advertising platform. Modern painting and Sculpture Modernism is not easy to define, but refers roughly to a period dating from the 1860s through to the 1970s, and is used to describe the styles and ideologies of art produced during that era.

Born of great cosmopolitan centres, it flourished in Germany and Holland, as well as in Moscow, Paris, London and New York. Broadly speaking, Modernists had a utopian desire to create a better world: they believed in technology as the key means to achieve social improvement and in the machine as a symbol of this aspiration. African Art The collections of African Art in the Permanent Collection of the South African (SA) National Gallery mirror the histories of independence, division and democracy that have shaped the character of our country over the last century and a half. Approximately 3 000 works primarily representative of the diversity of South Africa reflect expressive styles across the region. Aesthetics are expressed in media such as beadwork, sculpture, metalwork, weaving, carving in wood, bone and horn, and our collection includes exquisitely crafted items for use as adornments, regalia or for ritual or personal use.

I have learned to write, draw and paint with a pencil/ pen/ paintbrush held in my mouth, after a life changing diving accident. I'm an associate member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists of the World, a registered society, (VDMFK) in Switzerland.
Martin Sodoms Mouth Artist I am a quadriplegic (disabled in all four limbs) mouth painting artist, who wants, not pity, but to be treated as an equal to other human beings!
The formation of the association in 1956 gave all members the opportunity to completely support themselves through sales of their paintings, reproduced as cards, calendars, puzzles and other items.
