Designing Quality Spaces for the ‘‘Hospitable Atmosphere’’ Vacation Accommodation on the Island of Tavolara, Sardinia, Italy Understanding how to tame rural sites to our comforts of living Group site model: carton cut by hand 1:500 scale / Project Model : MDF, 1:20 scale, 1:100 scale Artwork by Solange Mbanefo: White cement sculpture and paint. Atmosphere Determining Exercise: ‘‘ Home like me ’’

4

The site is located on the uninhabited island of Tavolara, opposite the North-Eastern shore of Sardinia, Italy. The Island is characterized by robust Granite and Calcareous mountains. After disembarking, the only pathways continue on foot, rising in altitude. I ended up following a secondary trail through the wild mountain flora, that offered shy glances of the sea. I was suddenly overwhelmed by a nine meter wide panorama across the deserted Mediterranean bay. The theme of the corridor is influenced by the discovery of the site, and the theme of closed masses and opened voids captures the dynamic view along the house’s living spaces. One can easily use the outdoor spaces for BBQ and relaxing after a long sunny day on the island and the indoor spaces for cool shading and protection against the strong sea winds. Wanting to integrate the building with it’s natural surroundings on the relatively steep terrain explains the horizontality of the building. Furthermore, the house is only twelve meters from the sea, which incited me to project an ideal ‘‘vacation home’’ where one has a way of communicating with the peacefulness of the island’s wild, unharmed nature: The secret garden enclave at the very end of the home, completed by an embedded stone stairway that leads down to the nearby shore.

Residential High Density Housing : Raval, Barcelona, Spain A Study of Social Quarters and Affordable Urban Dwellings Group site model: White concrete, 1:200 scale / Project Model: concrete, MDF, 1:20, 1:50, 1:200 scale Photography and sketches by Solange Mbanefo

12

Raval is Barcelona’s first industrial Zone. Today, it remains the transitory subcultural quarter where the true communities of the dense barrios survive. As we went to our chosen site in the Raval to take measurements and pictures, I noticed these two women playing football with one of the local kids. They explained that the site is being used as a common ground for reunions and gardening. Kids come to play there knowing they are safe within the family of the neighbourhood. I wanted to adapt my housing project to represent a place where the people can still cultivate their expression of living together. For the project, privacy, shade and cross ventilation are dominant themes. The spatial concept was based on mixing different apartment typologies: studios with family-sized apartments. The disposition of the housing complex was according to the sun exposure and the predominant winds. The choice of wood and brick create a welcoming atmosphere that also commemorates the cultural traditions of handcraft and detailing. The wells of light are used to help naturally ventilate while their seemingly exaggerated size gives quality to the living spaces. The ground floor is a public park with a fountain and a dominant paved zone for local reunions. A children’s day care, a restaurant and a kiosk are the only closed entities that animate the street and serve the residence.

Digital Representation Course Designing an Interactive Pavilion for the University Park Appreciation of Vector Software, CAD Programs, Rendering and 3D modelling

22

The location of the pavilion was chosen to be placed along the park’s secondary path that is usually less frequented. The form was designed to complement the school’s main building across the field. The wooden structure, inspired by the classical cabin, maintains the transitory aspect the present pathway evokes. The steel cords supporting the suspended bench emphasize natural lighting, aeration and a light hearted feel one has when enjoying a lazy afternoon in the park.

Spatial Interpretation of an Architectural Project Three Dimensional Carton Model, Parallel Sections. Hand drawings. China Ink Rapidograph Glenn Murcutt, Magney House, Bingie Point, Australia

34

This exercise incited us to analyse and study the nature of the project, the location of the site and the reasoning behind the internal functions and dispositions before the redrawing process. The latter helped us familiarise with the standard symbols and conventions required in an architectural design. The following process involved the transition from a two dimensional representation into a three dimensional sectioned model in order to grasp a better understanding of the architectural space.

Research Survey In Urban Context Exercise of Developing Accuracy and Precision In ‘‘Ordnance Data Collecting’’ Hand Drawings, China Ink Rapidograph / 1:20 scale, Foam Model of Urban Area Bellinzona Historical City Centre, Ticino, Switzerland

38

We were asked to do a survey of Bellinzona’s historical square, Piazza del Sole. Both direct and indirect data collection methods such as photographic analysis and precise degree measurements were used. We had to then redraw the site on a 1:50 scale. I decided to do an axonometric view of the part of the square that we had to consider in more detail.

Hand Drawings, China Ink Rapidograph / 1:20 scale Foam Model Site : Leisure park in Bellinzona, Switzerland. Designed by Architect A.Galfetti with F.Ruchart

42

Designing an open space that plays with verticality and transitions impacts our perception of our surroundings as all senses are altered through the event of reaching the top of the diving board that is set in a scenic landscape. The themes of panorama, height and the use of stairs to attain the final platform are what defined the organisational structure of the project.

43

Thirty spokes unite at the single hub, But it is the central void that makes it useful to the wheel. We are moulding a mass of clay to form a bowl, But it is the cavity that makes it a container of use. Cut out doors and windows in the walls of a chamber: These are openings that make a room liveable. 44

Therefore to use what is, one must learn to use what is not. LAO TSU – “Tao te Ching”

45

Introduction to Housing: Hotel room design Study on Quality of Short-term Lodging and the Values of Spatial Comfort Hand Drawings, China Ink Rapidograph / 1:20 scale MDF Wood Model Site : Historical City Square, Bellinzona, Switzerland

46

The theme was set out to project a room within a hotel complex in the historical square of Bellinzona, Piazza del Sole. The free flowing plan and the slanted ceiling accentuate the quality of the two main living spaces and maximises the natural lighting. The only walls enclose the bathroom unit that also acts like the ‘‘trunk’’ element of the two zones. A sense of simplicity and repose, as one relaxes in the bedroom or sits in the living room towards the famous view of the Bellinzona castles, are what the hotel room should help the clients experience.

Sound Is Material Designing an instrumental body that provides resonance as a relation to substantial matter Generating, Manipulating and Projecting in Sound Design Steel sheets designed for a collective Megaphone March through the Old city of Mendrisio Paper Composition of a Geodesic Resonance Dome. 1:1 scale

50

The semester work was based on understanding the physics of Sound. Through the use of our voices, we were brought to project resonance boxes and amplification devices with paper and carton. The atelier was then brought to construct a machine made up of seventy aluminium megaphones activated by our voices, while being carried on our shoulders. This experimental performance transformed the whole city of Mendrisio into a dynamic route where sound revolutionized the march into a collective experience of harmony.

Observational Study: Investigating our Microcosmos Detailed Anatomy Research, Composition, Proportions and Volumetric Understanding Oil Painting on Wooden Canvas Artwork by Solange Mbanefo, except first square reference, far bottom left, p54.

54

The semester assignment was to paint a chosen insect following a complex technique of applying layers of paint. I spent many weeks analysing the real insect to finally approach what was thought to be an accurate representation. However, this exercise taught me that perfection is a mirage and any work that requires a subjective input is influenced by the beholder. I learnt a lot about my own character and also on how infinitely close the microcosmos is to our own ways of life. Beautiful Imperfection is her name.
