like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, etc. More so regions like Rajasthan and Northern Gujarat are affected by frequent dust storms during summer season. A standard practice being followed in industry is to clean modules twice in a month (except rainy season). But this may not be providing the developer with the optimum cleaning cycles and he may be under-cleaning or over-cleaning the modules. Plants located near dust producing industrial units like cement factories, cotton mills, etc. wil also provide lower energy generation due to heavy dust accumulation on modules. For such plants, more than normal frequency of module cleaning is required. The soiling conditions do differ from season to season. In summer, a large impact on soiling can be seen on the plant generation due to large amount of dust in air. Whereas in rainy season or months after rainy season the dust would have settled down and soiling losses may be reduced significantly. Thus while conducting soiling study for this plant, the year was divided into the following 5 seasons: 1. Summer – March and April 2. Dusty Summer – May and June 3. Rainy – July, August and September 4. Autumn – October and November 5. Winter – December, January and February The module’s spectral response will also be factor in

The project chosen for this study is 20 MWp Solar project located in Gujarat Solar Park. This plant has been constructed using Sharp Tandem Silicon Thin film modules and is in operation for the last 6 years. By nature, a tandem silicon solar cell is more dependent on the visual spectrum of the solar spectra and thus gets more affected by the soiling. Some of the key module technology improvements that players are prioritizing now are bifacial and half-cell. Bifacial promises all the advantages of glass-glass, such as lower LID, higher resistance, and higher tolerance for harsh environments. Moreover, bifacial can potentially generate 10-15% more electricity from the rear side, accompanied by only a limited increase in costs. For its part, half-cell technology aims to reduce cell-to-module losses by optimizing ribbon thickness. This new module design allows more cells to be placed into a module of a given size and increasing power output by 5-10 watts, potentially at a lower cost per watt. For both technologies, the increased output from one single module will also contribute to system cost reductions (on a per-watt basis).
