The company is run by experienced professionals from the industry who have extensive experience in products, projects and network on a Pan India scale. The senior management has been given the mandate to work as entrepreneurs and it is showing in the results achieved over a short duration of two years. We are on course to become a US $ 10 million company in FY 17-18 and are scaling up rapidly. The company has a PAN India presence and is presently working on projects in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Assam and Uttar Pradesh. We are amongst the few companies in India who have managed scale by covering the entire Solar spectrum in both the Off Grid and Grid connected projects. It is a necessity for us to adopt renewable energy and energy efficient solutions to supplement not only the

Lithium family with an established business partner and

setting up a manufacturing plant here in India. Initially

we will test the market for the quality of the product and

manufacturing facility. We feel that with scale the prices

will come down as has been the case with the Solar panels.

imagination of the industry and specifically for companies

who want to create wealth and are not looking at short term profits. All our customers have been growing in double digits and have given us repeat orders. Our involvement with them has been increasing on a day to day level and at

every level of their organization. We would want to become a one stop shop for them and cater to all their needs. Our unique aggregation model is also helping our vendors as their risk is on us and that is giving them comfort.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD FOR OUR READERS. MyWay is the only company in India who is working from

perspective of lifting up the sector through innovative mechanisms such as SACM (mentioned earlier). This

mechanism has become a force multiplier for our strategic

partners wherein they have experienced multi fold growth along with us. We always welcome likeminded industry

stake holders to work together and pave way for a better integrated and robust solar industry.

Soon, MyWay will also be launching a technology platform for asset management of Off Grid and decentralized Solar projects.

We also feel that while emphasis is on the huge utility scale power plants but equal emphasis should be given to decentralised solutions as well. I mean, that what better than using the energy where it is being generated, thus eliminating all the losses and grid outages. Hence we thought of aggregating all this demand and started our unique initiative called the “Same As Cash Mechanism”. Industry Insights THE IMPORTANCE OF SOLARIZING CITIES TO BUILD A SECURE AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Cities stand as the most advanced social engineering

Preference towards better transport, saving water, and

development, welcoming change, offering opportunities,

example of human kind. They have been the very center of

and spreading (social, economic, political, and now technological) growth throughout the world. Therefore, it

is understandable that the first step to build the sustainable future will start from cities in our country.

A smart and solarized city reflects power for all, a better network of technologies, and free from the shroud of pollution. Since all of these reflections go well with world’s

environment conservation choices, solarizing cities seems

the most important step to take to lay the foundation of a sustainable future.

SOLVING THE ENERGY CRISIS Functional advancements that make a city smart, liketraffic systems, intelligent logistics, data security, and

environmentally compatible buildings, are all connected

with energy. Therefore, the only way to improve and advance a city is to change its energy usage processes.

Since conventional energy is limited, the smart energy solution to build a bigger, better, cleaner, and sustainable future has to be green energy (solar especially). With

population rising (7.6 bn in 2018 globally), and most of

the population is concentrated in the cities, solving energy crisis has become the most important issue to focus on, least it reaches to such level that no change can take hold

permanently. Besides, cities of the world consume twothirds of the world’s energy, generating and polluting the

world with 70% of the global greenhouse gases of the total

managing other resources within countries, portray smart

To invest in the dream of developing smart cities, we obviously need to have a clear understanding of what it can bring.

Clean Energy Generation and Consumptions: Developing

countries like Philippines, Morocco, Africa, and India are

still facing energy deficits, that result in power cuts. Our conventional energy dependability has not successfully

offered us abundant energy till now (200 million live

without electricity in India), but green energy (especially solar) promises to make up for it and more for our future. With clean energy consumption, cities will easily be able

to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, with solar energy, cities would be able to make their own energy, reducing the real estate requirement as well.

It Infrastructure Growth: With a better energy supply,

application and usage of technology in daily life increase,

connectivity.

Therefore, development of smart cities is not only the right decision. And India is moving ahead with its own plan that aligns with this outcome.

Government of India has plans to build 109 smart cities in

India. And green energy generation is one of its primary transformation components. The idea to develop smart

cities is a decisive one to increase green energy generation and usage within country.

So far, Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in the country is mandated to get 13 smart cities, while Tamil

Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat will

get 12, 10, 7, and 6 smart cities each. The Government of India has also made announcements toward offering fund worth 500 crores INR (per city) for smart city development venture.

However, the efforts have to be increased to match the rise

of pollution and population. A greener, cleaner and energy rich sustainable future is at last in sight, and now India have to make an effort to reach it.

Interconnectedness is going to be the future. However,

it cannot be attained without a stable and cheap energy supply. Since fossil fuels are limited, with time their cost

will rise, making running the technology too expensive.

According to a recent study commissioned by IFC, the

This is good news, not only because of the over 1 billion people worldwide who continue to live without access to

electricity, but also because of the enormous contribution energy storage can make to greater supply and use of clean energy.

As clean energy generation becomes more mainstream around the world, its variability and supply fluctuation

begin to impact the electricity systems for which energy storage is a key factor. Storage can help even out spikes

and dips in solar and wind resource availability and enable energy distribution to be shifted from the time of

generation to the time of peak demand. There is no well-

defined threshold level of renewable energy supply needed to ensure non-stop supply but in most cases, grid systems

operators begin to invest in storage when 10 percent of their overall supply comes through renewable sources of wind and solar.

Over more than a decade, energy storage system vendors and battery manufacturers have been perfecting large-scale battery technology by extending its life cycle, toughening it to harsh environments, evolving management systems

and, most importantly, continually driving down the cost. The industry has now reached a pivotal moment, with large

storage systems becoming more competitive with other grid assets from a business perspective. The technology has

been proven in the markets of North America and Europe, with several vendors offering competing technologies and

solutions. What’s more, the capacity for installation and

gigawatts of new storage capacity. This will open up new markets and offer tremendous opportunities.

It has been tracking the storage market over several years and continues to support energy storage deployment in emerging markets.

Supporting energy storage technology is a strategic focus as a means of extending the reach and uses of renewable energy beyond intermittent power. Energy storage will be a key third component in IFC’s clean energy asset mix, in addition to generation and efficiency. The World Bank Group’s Scaling Solar program, which has made it easier and faster to procure solar PV in emerging markets, may be extended to energy storage once costs fall further. Storage technology is well-suited for a similar standardized procurement approach. Our commitment to stepping up as an advisor, investor, and partner in this important sector has never been stronger.

To date, we have engaged by means of early-stage venture capital investments, helping to prepare the market for mainstream investments. Some of our noteworthy investments included Microvast, a China-

to be applied to the same site. This may seem easy to manage if you are servicing only a handful of projects, however in Sapa, we pride ourselves on servicing multiple

projects, large and small, each one with a strict deadline and requiring customized solutions.

Being part of the World’s Largest Aluminium Solutions

Company, we have a robust production system to ensure quick turnaround for large volumes. We have inherently reduced the lead time by ensuring ready materials are always in stock for downstream processes of coating and

fabrication, all are under a single roof. In addition to the above, we keep ample stocks of subcomponents and accessories, which are imported from Mounting Systems GmBH, Germany.

The standardization of the clamps & subcomponents is

another engineering advantage we have for all our products and services all the modules available in the market.

W

hat are the challenges faced by the company in managing the supply chain?

As most of the people in the industry are aware, this

business is capital intensive. You need a huge working capital even if running a comparative smaller industry. Hence the turnaround time which is the time you invest for

a product or a project and the time you realize the money must be as short as possible. While there is little issue

with the PV modules supply chain, it becomes bigger with

the EPC, as there are lot of dependencies on the external factors. There are government agencies involved, Discoms

involved, and a whole lot of different suppliers from different sectors. Aggravating the pain are the incentives

and subsidies offered by the government for which there is no timeline and no commitment. All in all, it’s all about the turn-around time, the shorter it is, the better you can manage your supply chain.

Quality is a virtue by itself, and it needs to be lived. For

instance, every personnel at our manufacturing facility –

labour, engineer, technician, manager, everyone – follows a

quality manual. Whatever work they do has a defined set of quality checks to be done, and they are evaluated regularly. The key is that every person being involved in the lifecycle

MANUFACTURING & SUPPLY CHAIN

W

hat are the challenges faced by the company in managing the supply chain?

Managing the supply chain of any company requires constant coordination between various departments within the organisation as well as all the people involved in a transaction. Since the promoters have an experience in the manufacturing sector of over 30 years, we directly implement their learnings with some customisation to the industry. Given that there are so many raw materials to be procured to assemble solar panels, it becomes very important to restrict the number of vendors, which not only helps maintain the timeline of raw material procurement, but also improves quality. When the product is ready, one of the major challenge that prevails across the industry is to serve the customers located in the other part of the country, due to high transpiration costs. We are overcoming this challenge by building a network of warehouses across states, to help assist regular demand.

H

to their maximum abilities at all times. We conduct regular training and personal guidance sessions for all our staff,

to ensure that they are satisfied both at work, and outside

work. If processes are well defined and easy to understand, it leaves no room for error. Not only do we comply with ISO, but we have also implemented SAP H4 HANA which helps in automating a lot of manual processes, for superior

records and quality implementation. If your people and processes are sorted, precision comes naturally, and we are

a very quality conscious company, hence precision plays a very important role. To assist our people and processes, we

have all necessary quality control/inspection equipment both in-line and in the laboratory, to ensure precision in our production for highest quality products.

People. Process. Precision. We work on these three principals to ensure TQM in our organisation. People are the most important resource in any organisation, and we go an extra mile to make sure that our people are performing

control to finished product quality check, various machines

can be installed. More important is to train to the people working on these machines, to help achieve the purpose

of these machines. Adequate off the job and on the job training to all employees is a prerequisite for better quality. Most important is to set the internal standards as to what is

basic, the production process will definitely churn out some defective products. Hence, it is a comprehensive

Industry Insights END-TO-END SUPPLY CHAIN VISIBILITY AND ALIGNMENT

Seeking to address several key operational challenges,

First Solar decided to deploy RapidResponse, leading to improvements in demand planning, S&OP, inventory management and more.

At one time, First Solar was capacity constrained, and as a result, the company did not emphasize demand planning

in their operations. As their constraint moved from supply to demand, First Solar found it extremely difficult to slow

down or speed up production. The team had implemented

tools to support their supply chain, but they were unable

to streamline the data to provide intelligent information to manage inventory levels. They could not answer simple

questions with their ERP system, such as ‘what do we have to sell?’ and ‘when is it available?’ The team manually worked from spreadsheets to capture sales orders and to forecast demand, as well as to match it with projected

supply from their three manufacturing locations. This tedious process could take upwards of a week to get the desired information.

First Solar made the decision to deploy Kinaxis®

RapidResponse®, a cloud based supply chain management and sales and operations solution, and moved to a more

demand-driven supply chain rather than their historical approach of building to capacity. Within eight weeks of signing the purchase order, First Solar was able to

implement RapidResponse and the team immediately began seeing results.

The RapidResponse solution One of the first key performance

indicators (KPIs) the team decided to measure was inventory levels and balancing inventory to meet targets. The team can now monitor inventory and understand inventory

positions in minutes, not days. But, that’s not all: they are also modeling sales orders, forecasts and shipments

in RapidResponse along with finished goods inventory and projected supply. RapidResponse enabled First Solar

to provide their Sales team with exact figures of what is available to sell, and within three months, they saw a ten

percent reduction in overall inventory. During this period,

 Maximized revenue opportunities. processes

RapidResponse allowed the company to put triggers in

place to indicate how much supply it should be producing, based on demand. “These triggers, and understanding how to allocate product are two of the biggest improvements

that RapidResponse has enabled for the supply chain team,” said Shellie Molina, VP, Global Supply Chain, First Solar.

First Solar runs a comprehensive sales and operations planning (S&OP) process. They can have up to 50 people

on an S&OP call. The company understood no single function can be successful independently; they cannot hit

inventory targets just by the planning team doing their job. The real goal has become striving for visibility across

functions and across the entire value network of suppliers,

partners and customers. With RapidResponse, they now have one source of truth, where everyone agrees and can work from the data. First Solar is transforming their supply

chain and moving from functional excellence to end-

to-end supply chain alignment. Their S&OP is now run

continuously and is based on direct and deep supply chain visibility, supported by agile and collaborative decision

NEXT STEPS First Solar decided to approach the RapidResponse

deployment in strategic increments. Global Supply Chain Vice President, Shellie Molina, views RapidResponse as a fully functional integrated tool with multiple possible

applications across the organization. Given the priorities

and organization dynamics, Molina decided that the first step had to be to start with forecasting and connecting to the Sales organization.

Following demand planning, the focus has been on supply management and project management within their power plant division. First Solar was using Excel, Microsoft Project,

SAP and other home grown tools to manage their projects,

but were still unable to answer questions such as, ‘if the weather forecast says it is going to rain for a week, how will we make this time up?’ and ‘how will the schedule shift?’

With any type of construction project, you have weather delays, permitting issues – much different challenges than

inside factory walls. With RapidResponse, First Solar will

achieve the visibility and modeling capability needed to understand how a project is impacted by supply chain

disruptions, or conversely, how a project change alters

supply chain requirements. They also expect that the simulation capability will be incredibly helpful to model

different potential scenarios to understand the implications

and impact of project possibilities (e.g., ‘what happens if permitting takes longer than we think, what ht to go faster?’)

With this capability, just from an inventory management

Industry Insights WILL INDIA BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE ITS AMBITION? Achieving the target of 100 GW solar energy plant is not less than a mission. The budget announced by the finance minister of the country in February 2018, targeted to set up a 100 GW solar plant in India by 2022. For many years, India has been facing acute shortage of resources, and solar is the solution to all problems. The approval and finalizing of the project is due till mid-June, which will give total assurance to the 100 GW project.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF SETTING UP 100 GW OF SOLAR PROJECT? The biggest advantage of having a 100 GW project setup in India is equivalent to the total energy consumption of the country. India is not just one country; it’s a Country of 1 billion people. To achieve this target the government has planned to set up various programs and schemes such as solar parks, solar rooftops, solar pumps etc. This project targeted to be accomplished under 3 different sections: 1. 40 GW of utility-scale solar 2. 40 GW of rooftop solar 3. 20 GW under the entrepreneur scheme Also, the auctioning process of the solar power projects will take place soon. Firstly, 40 GW utility-scale project was driven under RGO and RPO which, claimed to generate a certain amount of energy from renewable energy technology. Secondly, 40 GW of the rooftop solar target comprises of subsidies cut in half from 30% to now 15%. They are also planning to bring in the policy of net metering in almost all the states of the country. Third, the entrepreneur scheme that came into discussion in this year budget process, which is yet to be finalized. This scheme will help the unemployed youth of the country and the farmers of the different region to promote the installation of solar in each and every part of the country. So, maximum people can take advantage of this natural resource. The ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) declared that from the total of 100 GW around 77 GW will be going under the solar power contracts. The only reason that can help to reach the target of 100 GW is the cheap prices of the natural resource, making it accessible to all.

SOME BENEFITS FROM SOLAR INSTALLATION If the solar project will be taken seriously, the average cost of electricity obtained from PV will be so much cheaper, around 59% estimated till the year 2025 then actual cost

WHAT ARE VARIOUS BARRIERS FACED IN THE PROJECT? The three major barriers coming in the way of this dream project are: 1. Distribution companies having to buy the solar power 2. Poor transmission infrastructure 3. Financing availability The solar target is going down because of various reasons: Many big companies have faced “huge loss” in the

recent years, and installation of solar energy power plant is far costly than their actual budget. We all are

aware of the fact that installation of solar at early level needs huge expense.

DISCOMS (distribution companies) feasible financially it

To accomplish this target there is enough of land and

hydro renewable power capacity during the particular year. Meeting such a challenge is not less than an opportunity to become better. Besides the cost of capital and technology another major factor that emerges is the slowing down of the Chinese economy in the country. To achieve such a big- target, India needs to get down working quickly. Many problems will come in the way and overcome all of them like a challenge is what actually needed, with an optimistic thinking.

are various forms of transmission, distribution and commercial losses which need to be abolished.

The investment done on the grid is perilous, and one

should stop intermittent sources of power to connect through it.

WHAT ALL ALTERNATIVE STEPS ARE TAKEN TO SOLVE THE UPCOMING BARRIERS?

REACH THE TARGET OF 100 GW IS THE CHEAP PRICES OF THE NATURAL RESOURCE, MAKING IT ACCESSIBLE TO ALL.

The government is trying hard to pass the dollar tariff, which will help while auctioning and the bidding of our solar projects will be conducted in dollars, in order to accelerate the lending’s from outside the country. This little change will allow foreign investment in India, and also the prices of solar energy power will certainly go down. Many people think, that achieving this target is very difficult for our country as numerous big companies are not able to install even a 500 MW solar energy plants because of it’s high installation cost. Therefore, they want foreign companies to invest in India to lower this spur growth of solar power. If we do proper calculations we can realize, that a large area of around 1000 sq. kilometres of land is required to set up this 100 GW of the project in India. The big challenge is to find this much area of land and developing it in the form of solar energy. When we want to achieve something big, we come across many small-small hurdles which need to be completed in order to reach our determined target. The total consumption of India is 275 GW if we take an approx. estimate and India is just half or less of actual. If we need to reach 100 GW target, we need to increase the rate of renewable energy capacity with the average of around 20+ GW annually. As, the youth and many

87% of the cumulative global PV capacity installed at the end of 2016 occurred. Solar PV module costs

fell rapidly until 2013, but have experienced more

modest cost reductions in recent years as PV module

manufacturers made efforts to return profit margins to more sustainable levels and various trade disputes affected minimum prices in different markets. Average

monthly solar PV module prices in Europe in 2016, were 13% lower than in 2015, while the decline in average

prices across a range of markets was 18% between 2015 and 2016. As a result of import treatment and individual

market preferences for particular module types, there

are a wide range of module prices depending on the market. Figure 1 highlights that although PV modules

are relatively homogeneous technologies, they are not

entirely interchangeable commodities. In 2016, average

selling prices in China were around USD 0.43/W, while California became one of the highest priced major

markets with prices of USD 0.61/W, though all analysed

markets experienced a decreasing cost trend between

2015-2016. These are average values and a range of prices around these values occur. In 2017, module prices

have dipped as low as USD 0.3/W, but are somewhat higher for modules from Chinese majors and good quality modules can now be produced sustainably for USD 0.4/W or less (Exawatt, 2017).

Rather than being driven primarily by substantial

capacity and deployment upsurge and their associated economies of scale, recent and near future module cost

reductions relate more closely to improvements in the

production processes and to efficiency gains associated

with increased adoption of newer cell designs (although the growth in cumulative deployment and manufacturing scale still plays a role in achieving low costs).

On the processing side, previous IRENA work has reported

on the growing market presence of the diamond wafer cutting method (IRENA, 2016a). Diamond wire sawing provides opportunities to reduce costs through reduction of material losses during slicing. During 2016, these

costs were about a fifth lower than for the traditional method.2 Since 2016, this wafer slicing technique is already prevalent in the monocrystalline segment, and

by the end of 2017 90%+ of monocrystalline wafers

worldwide will be being cut with this method and around half of multicrystalline (Exawatt, 2017). This occurred as manufacturers transitioned from the traditional method involving abrasive powdered silicon carbide slurries.

Industry announcements confirm a trend towards higher shares of diamond wafer slicing technology use

in the multi-crystalline segment as well, as this has the potential to lower silicon consumption (ITRPV, 2017;

Bernreuter Research, 2017; GCL-Poly, 2017; Canadian Solar, 2016).

Product Feature THE MOST EFFICIENT AND ADAPTABLE INVERTER AND SOLUTION DESIGN FOR BIFACIAL MODULES INTRODUCTION

FIGURE 1-1 STANDARD PV MODULE AND BIFACIAL MODULE

The highly efficient PV module technology that is widely

used in the industry is a bifacial module. These efficient PV modules need to be used with devices such as inverters to maximize value. Recently, many inverters that match bifacial modules have appeared in the industry. Which

inverter is the best match for bifacial modules? Based on

a large amount of empirical data, this article describes the inverters needed by bifacial modules.

BIFACIAL MODULE The solar cell technologies used by bifacial solar modules which are currently on the market include the PERC

technology based on the p-type silicon wafer, the PERT technology based on the n-type silicon wafer, and the HIT technology of heterogeneous structures.

As shown in Figure 1-1, in addition to receiving solar

radiation from the front, the rear of the bifacial module can also receive scattered light from the air, reflection light

of the ground, and direct solar light coming from the rear during the morning and evening. Therefore, the power generated by the bifacial module is greater compared with the standard PV module designed for the same PV plant.

We have tested standard and bifacial modules with the

FIGURE 1-2 ENERGY YIELD GAIN FROM THE REAR OF THE BIFACIAL MODULE

same structure for a long time. As shown in the figure, the energy yield gain from the rear of the bifacial module varies depending on the scenario, and the energy yield

increases by 5%–39%. In addition, the bifacial module can further increase the energy yield by 2%–6% based on its

excellent performance of good response to low light and low power loss under the working temperature.

Generally, the energy yield gain of a bifacial module compared to a standard PV module is about 7%–45% in the scenarios listed in Figure 1-2.

WHAT INVERTERS DOES A PV PLANT WITH BIFACIAL MODULES NEED? TABLE 2-1 SUN2000-70KTL-INM1 PARAMETERS

unchanged, while the peak power and peak power current of the PV module increase. In this case, designers need to

select a more appropriate inverter with a larger DC input current based on the actual gain.

FINER MPPT GRANULARITY

Ground

As shown in Figure 2-1, the rear radiation of the bifacial

module is uneven. As a result, the overall output power of

the PV module is different, and the current discrete rate

of the PV module reaches more than 5%. In this case, the

simulation, it is found that the mismatch loss caused by

Every two strings connected to Huawei SUN2000-70KTL-

HIGHLY ADAPTIVE AND THE MOST ACCURATE AND EFFICIENT MPPT ALGORITHM IN THE INDUSTRY As shown in Figure 2-2, since the mismatch of the bifacial

module is high, its I-V curve is more complex than that

will generate multiple peak values. This poses higher inverters.

Huawei string inverters have multiple MPPT units, which can greatly avoid energy yield loss caused by string mismatch. The detection precision of a string reaches 0.5%. In addition, Huawei inverter uses the most efficient MPP

intelligent tracking algorithm in the industry. The inverter

adopts the adaptive MPPT technology. When the irradiance

Solar SolarQuarter Quarter• •March March2018 2018 3838

is stable, the maximum power point of the PV module can

almost be reached. When the irradiance rapidly changes in

cloudy weather, the inverter can quickly respond and track the maximum power point in real time, so it can adapt to the bifacial module properly.

In addition, as the bifacial module has multiple peak values, the inverter can intelligently identify whether the

maximum power point has been reached. The high-speed multi-peak scanning algorithm is enabled to ensure that

the inverter is always operating at the maximum power

point of the PV module, thereby effectively improving the energy yield of the bifacial module.

SECURE AND RELIABLE PROTECTION DESIGN The fuse failure rate increases as the current increases The current of the PV module is affected by radiation and

the built-in 20 A fuse cannot protect the 15 A PV module and the built-in 15 A fuse is blown frequently due to the large operating current. Every two strings of Huawei SUN2000-70KTL-INM1 inverters dedicated for bifacial modules form one MPPT circuit and adopt a fuseless security protection solution. The design ensures that no overcurrent will occur, protects PV modules, and improves system reliability. In addition, security risks, frequent fuse replacement, and energy yield loss caused by fuse faults are avoided.

UNIQUE, ACCURATE, AND THE MOST REFINED DESIGN TOOL FOR BIFACIAL MODULE PLANTS IN THE INDUSTRY bifacial module is affected by many factors such as the project site radiation resource and ground reflectivity. As a result, the actual output power of the bifacial module

modules and inverter configuration for all projects and

may occur. The output current of a bifacial module is even

Even in the same place, refined design is required for

The fuse can then be blown or even result in a fire due to such high temperatures.

The fuse of a single specification cannot adapt to the current mainstream PV modules Currently, the maximum reverse withstand current capabilities of bifacial modules from mainstream vendors are 15 A and 20 A, as listed in the following tables. In this case, the DC combiner box or the string inverter with built-in fuses cannot adapt to the PV modules of another specification regardless of the fuse specifications. That is,

different scenarios. Therefore, the bifacial module system solution is more variable than standard PV modules. If all factors need to be considered, the number of design schemes of the bifacial module system will be more than 10,000. In this case, the optimal system design cannot be obtained accurately and quickly based on experience and standard design. Therefore, a more professional bifacial module design tool is required. The more professional bifacial module design tool will be introduced in the April issue.

Trends & Forecasts INSTALLATION TRENDS IN THE PV INDUSTRY SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAICS FIGURE 1  YEARLY ADDED AND CUMULATIVE GLOBAL PV CAPACITY BY REGION, 2006-2016

The global PV market has grown rapidly in the last decade. Cumulative global installed PV capacity grew from 6.1 GW at

the end of 2006 to 291 GW at the end of 2016 (IRENA, 2017a). From 2010 to 2016, net additions grew about 28% annually on average and additions in the time period account for

about 94% of the total capacity that was installed between 2006 and 2016 (Figure1).

Recent growth in the Asian PV market has more than compensated for the decrease in new capacity additions in Europe in recent years, as growth in China and Japan has

increased. These countries together installed about 88 GW between 2014 and 2016 alone. At the end of 2016, China was home to 27% of cumulative installed capacity globally.

Growth in other regions has also continued. For example,

through steady growth in recent years, the United States has become a large PV market with 11% of the global cumulative installed capacity at the end of 2016.

Yearly installations in Europe have declined since their highest historical value of 22 GW of new capacity additions in 2011. In both 2014 and 2015, new additions did not

exceed 8 GW, and in 2016 5 GW were installed in the region.

Europe’s share of total global cumulative capacity declined

from around three quarters over the period 2009 to 2011, to 44% in 2015. This was the last year when Europe held the

leading position in respect to cumulative capacity. In 2016, this share decreased to 35%.

The bulk of PV production capacity continues to be situated

in Asia, where China is the world leader in PV production.

China and Japan together accounted for around 70% of global module production in both 2015 and 2016.

Manufacturing capacity and production is also growing in other countries in the Asia-Pacific & Central Asia regions and

countries in these regions accounted for about a tenth of the modules produced globally in 2016 (Fraunhofer ISE, 2016, 2017). First and second-generation technologies account for virtually all production, while crystalline silicon-based

photovoltaics currently continues to dominate the market (Figure 2). Crystalline silicon module production accounted

for about 94% of production during 2016, up from 93% in 2015. (Fraunhofer ISE, 2016, 2017; GlobalData, 2017).

In the last decade, crystalline silicon wafer based commercial module average efficiencies have increased from about 12%

to a range of 17% to 17.5%. Best performing modules in the laboratory can currently reach up to 24.4% efficiency. Current crystalline module efficiencies are typically at least 2% lower than efficiencies at the cell level due to losses

caused by various factors such as: the module border, cell

stabilised cell efficiency for mass production of crystalline

architecture up from a current range of 18.8-23.5% (ITRPV, 2017; Fraunhofer ISE, 2017). The two most deployed thinfilm technologies are Cadmium-Telluride (CdTe) and Copper-

Indium Gallium-Selenide (CIGS). First Solar (the largest CdTe

manufacturer) reported fleet average efficiencies increasing from 12.9% in 2012 to 16.6% in 2016 for their CdTe modules

(First Solar, 2017). For CdTe cells, module efficiency record for the moment is 18.6%. The best CIGS reported efficiencies

so far were 17.5% for modules (Green et al., 2017). Solar Frontier reports current CIGS module efficiencies between

(Iris PV) is aiming to produce. The Berkeley, California-based company is working to modernize how silicon solar panels are manufactured. In addition, they are attempting to increase the efficiency of PVs to a range of 25-30%. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Small Business Vouchers (SBV) program award recipient’s technology adds a crystalline metal-halide perovskite layer to coat standard silicon solar panels, which produces additional electricity from infrared light. This is then layered on top of traditional silicon solar cells to create a “tandem” solar panel. These “tandem” solar panels, composed of two materials instead of one, generate a greater amount of electricity per panel.

FROM MANUFACTURING FLOOR TO ROOFTOPS Iris PV is receiving technical assistance from researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) through SBV as part of DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Technology-to-Market program. Iris PV cofounders Colin Bailie and Chris Eberspacher are working with NREL researchers to manufacture the technology at scale and accelerate the adoption of solar with their highefficiency PV products.

“Through the SBV program, we are addressing critical manufacturing challenges so that production facilities can be built,” said Bailie.

design. Because inkjet printers are more precise than spin-coaters, the production process is more efficient and uniform.

“Commodity silicon solar cells are mired in the 18-22% efficiency range. The theoretical maximum for combining two solar cell materials is 46% efficiency, though we’re aiming to fly a little less close to the sun and hit 30-35% efficiency.”

According to Iris PV, inkjet printing allows for rapid prototyping and low-cost custom products down the road, including the Iris PV form factor. To date, the project has printed single-junction perovskite cells with efficiencies of more than 16%, on par with devices made using other scalable technologies. And another benefit to Iris PV’s tandem panel design: Because it will be compatible with existing manufacturing tools and methods, costs for current solar manufacturers to switch technologies will be minimal.

Compared to today’s standard solar panel, Iris PV’s design minimizes costs for manufacturers and is compatible with most existing PV technologies. It could also save individual homeowners thousands of dollars in upfront costs and utility bills compared to current technology. Once this technology is commercially available, we hope to get an enthusiastic response from both solar installers and homeowners,” said Bailie.

OVERCOMING MANUFACTURING CHALLENGES Today’s metal-halide perovskite solar cells have manufacturing limitations. Specific manufacturing techniques, such as spin-coating, limit the size of individual glass panels. The spin-coating process deposits thin layers of solvents or coating materials, like silicon wafers, using centrifugal force. This process also requires additional patterning in solar cell production, adding to overhead costs. With the technical assistance of NREL’s researchers, Iris PV is overcoming these limitations using inkjet printing. Inkjet printing can uniformly coat large areas and complete patterns by dispensing single drops with controlled print

Iris PV’s next step is to demonstrate the technology’s scalability. If they are able to print perovskite films on a 6” x 6” area, the demonstration will be considered a success. As for Bailie and Eberspacher, their team especially valued the support of NREL researchers who helped through the SBV program--Maikel van Hest, Rosie Bramante, and James Whitaker. “The development of inkjet-printed perovskite photovoltaics would not have been possible without the support provided by the Department of Energy’s Small Business Vouchers program,” said Bailie.

Industry Insights CONFRONTING THE DUCK CURVE: HOW TO ADDRESS OVER-GENERATION OF SOLAR ENERGY

In 2013, the California Independent System Operator published a chart that is now commonplace in conversations about large-scale deployment of solar photovoltaic (PV) power. The duck curve—named after its resemblance to a duck—shows the difference in electricity demand and the amount of available solar energy throughout the day. When the sun is shining, solar floods the market and then drops off as electricity demand peaks in the evening. The duck curve is a snapshot of a 24-hour period in California during springtime—when this effect is most extreme because it’s sunny but temperatures remain cool, so demand for electricity is low since people aren’t using electricity for air conditioning or heating. The duck curve represents a transition point for solar energy. It was, perhaps, the first major acknowledgement by a system operator that solar energy is no longer a niche technology and that utilities need to plan for increasing amounts of solar energy. This is especially true for places that already have high solar adoption, such as California, where one day this past March, solar contributed nearly 40% of electricity generation in the state for the first time ever.

UTILITY CHALLENGES

California Independent System Operator High solar adoption creates a challenge for utilities to balance supply and demand on the grid. This is due to the increased need for electricity generators to quickly ramp up energy production when the sun sets and the contribution from PV falls. Another challenge with high solar adoption is the potential for PV to produce more energy than can be used at one time, called over-generation. This leads system operators to curtail PV generation, reducing its economic and environmental benefits. While curtailment does not have a major impact on the benefits of PV when it occurs occasionally throughout the year, it could have a potentially significant impact at greater PV penetration levels. While the mainstream awareness of these challenges is relatively recent, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) has been at the forefront of examining strategies for years. Most of the projects funded under SETO’s systems integration subprogram are performing work to help grid operators manage the challenges of the duck curve.

Duck Curve Solutions Using Storage to Improve Grid Resiliency Learn about SETO’s project with Austin Energy. Solar coupled with storage technologies could alleviate, and possibly eliminate, the risk of over-generation. Curtailment isn’t necessary when excess energy can be stored for use during peak electricity demand. SETO launched several projects in 2016 that pair researchers with utilities to

examine how storage could make it easier for utilities to rely on solar energy to meet customer needs around the clock. This research will enable even more solar energy to be integrated into the grid, while tackling the obstacles utilities face when incorporating solar.

REPRESENTS A TRANSITION POINT FOR

SOLAR In 2012, SETO also launched a research program that helped utilities, grid operators, and solar power plant 4.90" owners to better predict when, where, and how much solar power will be produced. More accurate solar power predictions, known as forecasts, allow utilities and electric system operators to better understand generation patterns and maximize solar resources. One key success came from IBM, whose machine-learning technology India's first enabled prediction accuracy to be improved by 30%. leading manufacturer of However, as the amount of solar energy generation connected to our electric grid continues to grow at a rapid rate, further improvements in predictive accuracy will be needed.

WHAT IS THE DUCK CURVE?

There are many potential solutions to the duck curve. The lessons learned from SETO’s projects will be critical to improving the flexibility of the grid and addressing overgeneration risks as solar grows throughout the country. According to the Energy Information Administration, the installed amount of PV is expected to triple by 2030—potentially migrating the duck curve outside of California. New and improved technologies will allow PV to provide on-demand capacity and fulfill a greater fraction of total electricity demand.
