Regional Product Marketing Manager, Trina Solar Middle East

"We believe that Trina Solar's revolutionary 210R modules will impact greatly on EPC's and developer's strategical thinking as these modules have proved significant fiscal savings on LCOE and BOS comparing to conventional 182mm modules."

HIGHLIGHTS

Trina solar 210R modules have a higher Power to weight ratio compared to 182mm modules; this means that your modules are able to produce more power from a lighter area

We have seasoned our R&D skills by working closely with universities all around the world and transformed the knowledge into actual and real products. Trina Solar will focus more and more to improve the design, user friendliness of the products and affordability of solar energy

QTell us about your experience in the solar industry.

I have been in the solar industry for over 8 years now I started my career right after my graduation from UNSW in Sydney, Australia in an Electrical company with a focus on solar turnkey projects Projects involved solar panels, inverters, lithium batteries, generators, etc. So I have a very good grasp of the whole picture and requirements of the sites I recently joined Trina Solar in Dubai to pursue my career in a perfectly located area for solar energy At our Dubai office, we are responsible for the African and Middle Eastern markets with offices in different regions to support the local partners and prospects better

QTrina Sola’s new Vertex series with rectangular cells are taking the market by storm. Tell us more about their features.

Indeed We are, in fact, very proud of these new 210R modules Currently, we have two modules in this series (435W and 580W) In a nutshell, this series benefits from the advantages of both 210mm and 182mm cell

size modules For instance, they same width as 182mm modules, so compatible with most of the trackers and structures and at the same time they heir their longer length from the 210mm modules; hence they have higher power output and efficiency It would be out of the scope of this interview to talk in detail about all the benefits but to name a few, high packing efficiency, stiff mechanical performance, higher string power and high compatibility with the inverters and trackers have turned this series amongst the bests in the history of solar panels

QWhat makes this vertex series with rectangular cells suitable for a region like the Middle East?

One of the key advantages of using Trina Solar Vertex 210R modules is their high string power; thanks to their precise electrical design, you will be able to achieve higher power out of each string and this reduces the need to have a higher number of strings in the total system design This simply means the user will save money on equipment, structure, cable, freight and even labour

Additionally, Trina solar 210R modules have higher Power to weight ratio compared to 182mm modules; this means that your modules are able to produce more power from a lighter area Therefore, you wouldn’t need a heavy duty, very strong and pricey structure to withstand the weight of the module Again, this means saving for the project stakeholders

These modules, also, benefit from effective hotspot performance which is quite a peace of mind in a region like the Middle East.

e

advancements you are planning for the coming year? Trina Solar is one of the most advanced PV manufacturers of all time.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has met the challenge of making a strong solar developers’ network in recent years.

The energy transition program Vision 2030 launched in 2017, states that 50% of Saudi Arabia’s electricity generation will come from both solar and wind projects

¾ of the overall renewable energy generation will be the subject of partnerships between the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and foreign investors for creating a powerful renewable energy sector in the country

A lot of small and large scale solar power plants are already producing clean energy while decarbonizing the energy mix. Thus, the favorable environment and huge potential for growth are supported by strong regulations to ease renewable plant development

We are proud to be able to support Saudi Arabia in its energy transition through Vision 2030 EDF Renewables is committed to supporting this program through investment, competitiveness, and proper execution. We are fully committed to supporting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and surrounding regions with a wide range of low carbon solutions such as hybrid plants, micro and off grid, hydrogen plants, storage, and low carbon solar solutions

This includes hybrid plants that combine CSP and PV or smaller hybrid PV battery saving fuel in off grid diesel plants We also offer battery systems to aid the integration of large scale projects into the system or Pumped Hydro Storage Power Plants

Finally, EDF Renewables is looking with interest toward the promising market of Green H2 and low carbon solar and wind solutions In this context, EDF Renewables is working with partners to develop two major projects that support decarbonization The first one is a 400 MW wind farm in Dumat Al Jandal, powering over 70,000 households The second project is a 300 MW utility scale solar park in Jeddah. The success of these projects is due to the overall competitiveness of the local market Given this favorable condition, the demand for renewable energy generation is expected to continue its upwards trajectory in Saudi Arabia

Furthermore, we continuously invest and innovate, as we did on our current local projects We have a strong presence in the Kingdom, which has anchored us as a major international player in the local market for the next decades

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

One of the main goals of effective Operations and Maintenance is to maximize generation output in a cost efficient manner

To reduce downtime, efficient scheduling is necessary to fix before it fails, shifting from a regular preventative to a predictive strategy

Despite the price increases in the supply chain, renewable energy is still the most competitive and fastest growing of all electricity sources.

I’m now leading O&M for flagship utility scale plants in the region, the MBR Solar Park and Al Dhafra Solar Park in the UAE, the Dumat Al Jandal Wind farm, and the Jeddah South PV plant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as well as the Benban Solar Complex in Egypt

In addition to my current responsibilities, I’m a member of the Board of the Middle East Solar Industry Association, the leading non profit organization whose core mission is to promote the growth of the solar industry in the Middle East Region

First, from a contractual standpoint, the O&M Agreement shall be focusing on getting the maximum energy from the plant This means not only having a performance guarantee from the Operator but as well to have an incentive scheme between assets owners and the Operator to create a win win scenario

I’m a renewable energy professional with more than a decade of experience across Europe and the Middle East I’m responsible for leading all aspects of operations, maintenance, and asset management at EDF Renewables, a global leader in renewable electricity production without CO2 emissions.

As part of its CAP 2030 strategy, EDF Renewables supports the EDF Group’s ambitions in renewable energy and play a leading role in the construction of a net zero energy future The company is also expanding into other promising sectors such as electricity storage and electric mobility

Along with this strategy, I’ve been driving O&M organizations for the EDF renewables energies business for over a decade First, this includes 7 years in France. Then, in 2017, I moved to the UAE for the construction, operations, and maintenance of the world's largest PV Project at that time, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park Phase 3

One of the main goals of effective Operations and Maintenance is to maximize generation output in a cost efficient manner. In order to do so, automation and digitalization are the main drivers

Over the last decade, we have seen the emergence of smart monitoring solutions through the use of AI/big data analytics that helps identify losses of generation, forecast behaviors, and develop predictive maintenance in order to be proactive and fix before it fails

Effective utilization of Data analytics shall be at the core of all operator strategies and the use of technologies such as drones for thermal imagery, robot cleaning solutions also helps Operators to optimize generation and reduce the time spent by personnel on the plant, hence increasing the profitability of the projects

From a technical aspect, the Operator needs to know in detail how much the plant should be generating based on the environmental conditions and shall use the right data provided by its monitoring system and data analytics to identify current losses at every level it is then required to implement a strong action plan to limit the impact of the main sources of losses such as soiling, temperature, tracking angles, unavailability of equipment, etc

To reduce downtime, efficient scheduling is necessary to fix before it fails, shifting from a regular preventative to a predictive strategy

Availability of spares is as well key and its importance has been highlighted by the logistic constraints during this pandemic period.

Finally, the skills of the staff working on a solar plant are not to be underestimated as well Qualifications of suppliers and knowledge management/training are very impactful for asset integrity

Head of Asset Management, Operations, and Maintenance, EDF Renewables

Globally, the current global energy crisis has added new urgency to accelerate clean energy transitions and, once again, highlighted the key role of renewable energy

In the renewables industry, over the last decade, we have been used to see a sharp and continuous decline in LCOE but lately, this trend has stopped

Despite the price increases in the supply chain, renewable energy is still the most competitive and the fastest growing of all electricity sources

In the Middle East, the region is offering great opportunities for the development of renewables

Lands are largely available, solar irradiance levels are some of the highest in the world, and renewable projects in the region are extremely competitive, continuously breaking world records

The potential for Green hydrogen is as well very promising considering the competitive price of renewables

With this favorable environment, the potential for growth is huge and shall be supported by strong regulations to ease its development

QWhat is your outlook on the renewable sector growth in the next few years? Is there anything that you are looking forward to?

Solar energy in the Middle East region is expected to witness significant growth in the market as solar energy's prices shall continue to fall during the next 5 years and I’m thrilled to be part of such exciting projects

Being an intermittent energy source, in order to maintain constant power distribution, storage of electricity is likely to be more largely integrated into the plants

Hence, I’m looking forward to seeing the emergence of the coupling of solar with storage (batteries, hydrogen) that is expected to evolve positively with R&D progress and the scaling effect

In line with his commitment to building a net zero energy future, EDF Renewables is providing such innovative solutions and services, to help save the planet and drive wellbeing and economic development

We have established a partnership with big groups in Saudi Arabia, we are going to expand to other countries by 2023

We have the experience, knowledge, and highly educated engineers to perform any project of any size It’s also important to localize your marketing strategies for the goal market such as user experience, and creatives

reviews and they play a major role in buying decisions In comparison to marketing in the Middle East, there is nothing like this. People buy systems because they need them or enjoy them only They don’t look at systems as a long term investment or plan

Marketing in the Middle East is not better or worse than in the West; it’s just different. In order to begin, you first need to understand the market

We have been awarded a 130 MWp project in Jordan with O&M for 20 years, this project will be the beginning of bigger steps and opportunities in the near future.

The market in Arab countries is growing fast In recent years, the market in the Middle East has become very attractive Competition in the Middle East is not very high; it’s just dominated by a small number of big companies. Everything is owned by big companies and supported by local investors

How Bifacial Solar Module With Tracker System Is Optimizing Of Middle East's Solar Projects? LC

Every stakeholder in a PV installation should have the goal to optimize the energy harvest After all, the more optimal the system’s energy output, the faster the project will generate a return on investment Considering the increase in installation, material cost, and global geopolitical uncertainties, trackers with bifacial modules in the middle east region seem to be the more suitable option to optimize the Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE) of utility scale Solar plants in India. With the rising cost of solar modules, and the increasing cost of labor in the middle east region, the Trackers with the bifacial module will help developers achieve low CAPEX costs as the number of solar modules will go down for the projects

The tracker + bifacial module feature allows solar installations to capture sunlight earlier in the morning than later in the evening This extends the time that the installation can harvest sunlight This feature ultimately maximizes energy generation, reduces the levelized cost of electricity, and ultimately improves the system’s return on investment.

The Benefits of Bifacial Module + Tracker System

The bifacial module + tracker configuration allows the modules to capture the sun throughout the day while the trackers also allow them to collect more sunlight hitting the panels For an installation on middle east's dry desert ground surface, bifacial modules on trackers significantly outperform the energy output of a standard fixed tilt ground mounted system Without a tracker good amount early morning solar insolation will be lost.
