Hi Welcome to the second edition of Isla. It’s great to be working so closely with the university, it still feels like yesterday that I was a student. Music is still as important to me today as it was then. I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Pink Floyd; I get the same kick from the likes of The Stone Roses. This year the line-up combines artists that have made history in music and those that are creating history in music. Come along to the Festival and make sure you check out some of the smaller acts appearing in The Dance Tent, on The Beach and The Garden Stage. It’s only a stone’s throw away from Southampton so we hope to see you there!

he quiet, unassuming Island off the south coast of England always had been a peaceful place without much disturbance. But with technicolour flower power spreading throughout the world in the 60s, it was only a matter of time before the Isle of Wight was swept along for the ride. In 1968, a year before the defining festival of the 60s (Woodstock), the Isle of Wight opened its gate to about 10,000 hipsters, groovers, shakers and hippies. They hit the Island in psychedelic force with the opening of the inaugural Isle of Wight Free Festival. The first festival was headlined by San Francisco psychephiles Jefferson Airplane with suitably trippy support from art rocker Arthur Brown, the Pretty Things and a fey folk duo called Tyrannosaurus Rex that featured one Marc Bolan. If the flowery force of popular culture came as a shock to the sleepy island in 68, then 69 would be a another kettle of fish. 150,000 music lovers flocked to the festival, which featured an impressive expanded line up. Joe Cocker, Free and folk rock super group Pentangle all graced the stage but 1969 is famous for two reasons: Bob Dylan and The Who. Bob Dylan’s lengthy set marked his return to live performance after a motorcycle accident in 1966. This was a great coup for the festival organisers considering Dylan was living in upstate New York in a little place called Woodstock. Not being the usual hippy dippy, flower power band The Who performed a pulverizing and lengthy set in the early hours of Sunday morning, which has now become an iconic part of rock history. The biggest shock to the Isle of Wight’s system came in 1970, however, when an estimated 600,000 stormed the island in to see bands like The Who, returning to the festival, alongside newcomers such as The Doors and jazz legend Miles Davis. Jimi Hendrix played his final British concert. Though the 60s are long over, the Isle of Wight Festival still retains the spirit of those times – love, peace and rock n’ roll.

he STONE ROSES have been announced as one of the three big headliners and will play on Friday 14th June on The Main Stage. After reforming last year, they are playing the best shows of their career and Isle of Wight looks set to be a legendary performance and made even more special as this will be their only UK festival appearance in 2013. On Saturday 15th June we welcome THE KILLERS to The Main Stage. The Las Vegas band fronted by Brandon Flowers are festival favourites and with four number one albums, it’s going to be a setlist of hit after hit. Sunday’s Main Stage headliners will be Grammy award winning BON JOVI who will close the Main Stage on Sunday 16th June and will provide an explosive end to what is shaping up to be another breathtaking year. Theirs will be a performance you certainly won’t want to miss. As well as The Main Stage headliners, there’s an epic line up of acts joining them including EMELI SANDÉ, BLOC PARTY, PALOMA FAITH, JAKE BUGG, BEN HOWARD and THE SCRIPT. Joining The Stone Roses on The Main Stage on Friday will be Scottish singer Emeli Sandé. The Brit Award winner has had a remarkable 2012 with her debut album Our Version Of Events being one of the best albums of the year. And making his debut will be teenager JAKE BUGG. His self-titled debut album went straight to number one in October, knocking music giants Mumford and Sons ‘Babel’ off the top spot.

Playing The Main Stage on Saturday, will be indie four Bloc Party, THE MACCABEES, whose third album Given To The Wild was one of 2012's best releases and Ben Howard. Ben’s debut album Every Kingdom really struck a chord with fans and the Devon singer took his inspiration from musical greats including John Martyn, Van Morrison and Nina Simone. On Sunday chart-topping Irish trio The Script perform on The Main Stage. The band fronted by Danny O’Donoghue are also enjoying huge chart success right now with their new album ‘#3’. Joining The Script will be kooky singer Paloma Faith and ‘Dream Catch Me’ singer NEWTON FAULKNER. Acts gearing up to take on The Big Top include Thursday headliners and baggy legends HAPPY MONDAYS. On Friday it’s the enchanting ELLIE GOULDING who will delight the crowd with her haunting ballads and upbeat pop. Closing the Big Top on Sunday are the legendary BLONDIE fronted by the iconic Deborah Harry, who last played the festival in 2010. Other Big Top performers over the weekend include Grammy nominated newcomers FUN. soul songstress LIANNE LA HAVAS and Welsh rock band KIDS IN GLASS HOUSES. There’s also the Garden Stage which sees THE BLOCKHEADS, THE LEVELLERS, STEVE FORBERT and IMPERIAL TEEN play over the weekend. One things for certain, the 12th Isle of Wight Festival is going to be unmissable. Dig out your tents and get your tickets now.

or Stone Roses fans across the globe, 2012 will always be a special year. Sixteen years after their break-up, the Mancunian legends patched up their differences and returned to the stage with a string of live dates in the UK and across the world, including three homecoming shows at Manchester’s Heaton Park. The band formed in Manchester in 1984 and after five years of hard graft hit the big time with their legendary, self-titled debut album, released in 1989. Fusing together 60s sunshine pop sensibilities with a slick, Acid House referencing groove and sugar spun harmonies, The Stone Roses remains one of the most well loved and influential British albums of all time and has been the basis for most of their reunion shows. The band played it from beginning to end for the first time ever live last year, sending audiences into a frenzy. Their follow-up album, Second Coming showed that not only could they produce some of the best pop music of the early 90s, but also rock as hard as any of their contemporaries. Shifting away from the multi coloured brightness of their debut, Second Coming is awash with swampy guitars and blues influenced riffing whilst still retaining major hooks and sumptuous melodies. The band has always possessed a certain, swaggering magic in their sound and attitude. Ian Brown’s cooler than cool stage manner, possesses a knack for intelligent, sweet and sour lyrics, which has been aped over the years by the likes of Oasis/Beady Eye singer Liam Gallagher and The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess. John Squire’s spiraling, chiming guitars

have become the blueprint for most melody heavy, indie rock bands over the last decade and he remains one of Britain’s premier guitarists. Reni and Mani form the Roses’main weapon – their simply sensational rhythm section. The pair lock into each other perfectly, giving Squire the bedrock to shoot off bursts of candy-coloured fret work while making sure the audience get out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Bands as diverse as The Manic Street Preachers, The Maccabees and Bombay Bicycle Club have all taken something from the Roses. You’d be hard pressed to find a British guitar band that doesn’t have at least a little Stone Roses in them. It’s easy to see why. Not many other bands have a back catalogue of brilliant songs to choose from. Songs like She Bangs the Drums, Made of Stone and I Am The Resurrection have all seeped into British pop culture to become alternative national anthems. Second Coming classics like Ten Storey Love Song and Love Spreads all demonstrate Squire’s guitar pyrotechnics and the power of the Roses’ rhythm section, making it the perfect soundtrack for this year. Their comeback showed the Roses are sounding and playing better than ever and undoubtedly still have the same chemistry and swing that propelled them into the spotlight over 25 years ago. For many people, their Isle of Wight performance will be the perfect opportunity to see The Stone Roses in action. ince bursting on the UK’s airwaves with the anthemic Mr. Brightside in 2003, The Killers have been festival staples and sold over 16 million records. Back after a two-year hiatus with fourth album Battle Born, the quartet are revitalised and ready to hit the Main Stage on Saturday night at the Isle of Wight Festival. Britain has always been a source of inspiration for the band. Frontman Brandon Flowers got his rock star calling after seeing Oasis live in The Killers’ hometown Las Vegas. The search for like-minded musicians resulted in guitarist Dave Keuning joining Flowers, and the final line up of bassist Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. was cemented in late 2002. The band takes the best of their influences, including the icy synths of New Order, the softer side Smashing Pumpkins and Morrissey with a hint of Glam Rock, to create an entirely unique sound. Since then the band have been fixtures on the UK album charts. Their debut, Hot Fuss, rocketed to number one in 2004, and was lauded with critical acclaim. Hot Fuss was also littered with hit singles including Smile Like You Mean It and All These Things That I’ve Done. The Killers built on this with their follow up record Sam’s Town, released in 2006. Influenced by Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Tom Petty and named after a casino in their hometown,

this second album was preceded by the single When You Were Young. The album was another roaring success and has sold an estimated 4 million copies worldwide. Third album, 2008’s Day & Age, which included the hit single Human gave them their third number one album in a row. Following a wildly successful tour supporting the album, The Killers focused on a number of side projects. Brandon Flowers released solo album Flamingo in 2010, which was another commercial success for the singer. Dave Keuning popped up to record a guitar solo for the album’s opening track while in 2011, Ronnie Vannucci Jr. stepped out from behind his drum kit to take guitar and vocal duties on his album Big Talk. Bassist Mark Stoermer also recorded a solo record in 2011, titled Another Life. Since then, The Killers returned to the studio as a group to record their fourth album Battle Born. Named after the band’s Las Vegas studio, the album was recorded with a score of different producers, including Steve Lillywhite, Brendan O’Brien and Stuart Price - who the band had first worked with when he remixed Mr. Brightside under his guise as the Thin White Duke. With Flowers describing their latest shows as: “our career best”, festival goers will be in for a treat this year as The Killers headline Saturday night on the Main Stage at the Isle of Wight Festival 2013.

he Isle of Wight Festival welcome Grammy Award winning American rock legends Bon Jovi, who will make their debut closing the Main Stage on Sunday 16th June. Bon Jovi says: “The Isle of Wight Festival is legendary and we’re excited to join in the long tradition of rock ‘n’ roll history. We are honoured to be the headliners on the Main Stage Sunday night. This will mark our first visit to the island and I expect it will prove to be a highlight of our tour and of 2013.” With a back catalogue of 18 albums including the multiplatinum selling, 1986, Slippery When Wet, which gave birth to rock anthems Living On A Prayer and You Give Love A Bad Name, Bon Jovi have served as slaves to rock n roll for almost three decades. In that time their fan base have shown no sign of waning and with a world tour coming up, there is still a feeling of high demand for the 80s rock veterans. John Francis Bongiovi Jr, was born in New Jersey in 1962, five years before the phenomenon, The Summer of Love. Through
a lucky family connection, Jon’s cousin Tony (who owned the infamous recording studio The Power Station) hired Jon as a caretaker when he finished school. Music has always been at the core of Jovi’s life and he was fortunate enough to jam and produce demos alongside the mighty Bruce Springsteen who played the Isle of Wight Festival last year. A particular demo, Runaway, captured the attention of a local radio station in New Jersey, which led to a battle of the record companies. Bon Jovi later signed to Mercury in 1983. The last album the band released was their Greatest Hits: The Ultimate DVD Collection in 2010. The DVD includes the majority of their music videos along with footage from many of their live performances. The Grammy Award winners will be rocking in their 30th year when they play the festival in June. The band consisting of Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora on guitar, David Bryan on keys and Tico Torres on drums have sold a staggering 130 million albums and toured in over 50 countries worldwide.

he Isle of Wight Festival 2012 saw a month’s rainfall in a weekend, causing delays on both the roads and in the site’s car parks. However, Festival promoter John Giddings, is reassuring festival goers that no matter what the weather, the 2013 event will be issue free, due to meticulous contingency plans already underway. “I will never allow people to stay in their cars overnight again, it was a limited amount of people but I never intend to let that happen again. I’ll personally take them off the road myself, I was assured they wouldn’t be and they were, I was upset about it. “People are so used to being in and out so easily, it amplified the whole thing really, as we never had that problem before. If we have the worst rain ever we are still going to deal with it,” he added.

“What’s in place for next year is that we’ve segregated the car parks between Wightlink and Red Funnel with different entrances, extra exits, and we’re putting more trackway into the fields so it will never cause that problem again. “I’m investing a quarter of a million pounds of infrastructure to make sure the same problems don’t occur again for me. The problems with the boats will definitely be resolved, there were lessons to be learnt on all parts, and I think the inquest has put it to bed, and going forwards, it’s going to be better for everybody concerned.” However, with extra precautions and plans to encourage the use of public transport, Giddings reassures all involved that the problems of last year will never happen again, and that 2013 will be bigger and better than ever. l
