I think the police might have missed a trick here W ell, well, what more can one say.

Just when we all thought mob-justice was wrong, then this group of young “nyaope” addicts in Mahikeng in the North West do something so brave and noble that all I want to do is to touch my bald head and salute them.

Frustrated by what they claim was the initial lack of support from the local police to their plight, these young township “nyaope” addicts decided to take a collective stance and fight against the misery of their drug addiction by dealing directly with the source and root cause of their problem.

What’s even more interesting and encouraging is that in their will to overcome their drug addiction, these youngsters did what most adult drug addicts and alcoholics would never in their lifetime dream about, let alone think of doing.

These boys, in their dazed state of mind, took it upon themselves to think and devise a means to hit back at the very people who are responsible for their addiction.

One major problem that torments families whose children have fallen victim to the drug, is the theft of money and sellable household items. Hundreds of families across the colour lines have been virtually “cleaned-out” by their “nyaope” addicted children who steal anything they can sell to feed their drug habit.

Because of this and other drug-related anti-social behaviour, many of these young addicts are chased away by their families and treated like “social outcasts” by their neighbours and society with many of them ending up as “street-kids”.

Close media associates in the former Bophutha-Tswana Bantustan’s capital, tell me that unemployment, coupled with the growing levels of poverty in the area has led to all sorts of social ills in this once relatively quiet and

tranquil former capital. Among these is the problem of drug addiction, especially among young people, something that was previously unheard of in the bad old by-gone days under former homeland ‘State President” Lucas Mangope.

It seems that what these young Mahikeng drug addicts had hoped for was that by cutting a “deal” with the local cops and “grassing” on known local “nyaope” dealers in the city, this would not only indicate their willingness to work with the law in exposing drug dealers in the area, but also place them in high standing with the community and the police and possibly help them to be placed on a sponsored drug rehabilitation program.

But alas, that was not to be!

These young “nyaope” addicts claim that they were instead mocked and chased away by the police. They claim cops in Mahikeng told them that they do not make “deals” with drug addicts. However, their sympathetic families and relatives and later the local taxi association supported the young addicts. That is when they collectively decided to mobilise and stand up against their former “nyaope” suppliers”.

Of course, as much as this newspaper and its publishers will not condone nor support lawlessness or any form of vigilantism, there are those who will praise the cops for their unwavering stance against being seen to be supporting an illegal drug activity.

In my mind, I think if the Mahikeng police were really serious about eliminating the scourge of drugs in their communities, they should have grasped the opportunity offered to them by the local “nyaope” addicts with open arms. In all my dealings with cops and criminals

Moving of hospital was simply a very bad idea

oving Natalspruit Hospital to Vosloorus was not a very bright move.

The move has negatively affected hundreds of people like me and many others who live in Katlehong, Thokoza and the informal settlements of Mandela Park. Now people from these areas have to travel all the way to Vosloorus for medical attention at the hospital.

Would it not have been better to build another hospital in Vosloorus and leave Natalspruit hospital where it was in Katlehong?

Police should close down these brothels

T

he first question that popped out of mind as I read the story on the front page of our favourite lokshin newspaper was; what are the Booysens SAPS and the JMPD doing about this open sex slavery in their jurisdiction?

Surely, Mr Editor, South Africa has rules and laws that govern the nation. These foreigners who run the brothels have no right to be exploiting our sisters in this way. I would even take this issue further and call upon our politicians to enter the fray and tackle this matter head-on.

If they want to use prostitutes, then by all means they should fetch them from their own countries and bring them to South Africa to do the dirty work for them. If not, the police and the Metro should clamp down on these brothels, close them down and prosecute those found to be running them.

Only the police and the metro police can raid these sex and drug dens in the south of Johannesburg and put an end to this human trafficking business once and for all.

in my career as a crime and news reporter, never do I recall a policeman who is worth his salt in law enforcement that had turned down an offer by a criminal to be a “friend”.

It is a known secret that good crime detectives who are able to solve difficult and complicated cases do so with information sourced from the clandestine activities of their informants and “friends” in the community. So, by turning down the offer from the young “nyaope” addicts the Mahikeng SAPS, (even though I later heard from the bush-telegraph that they changed their mind and decided to support the addicts) was a serious error in judgement.

In a country like ours, where crime and lawlessness are rampant, and our townships and towns are riddled with drugs and prostitution, friendly gestures by members of the community extended to the police, even by those tainted with crime, should be embraced and not repulsed by the authorities.

I view this action by the young “nyaope” addicts as a noble and laudable act of bravery. I think these guys deserve more than just support from their parents, the community and the police in Mahikeng for their maverick endeavour to unchain themselves from the bondage of drugs and those who peddle them.

There is no doubt that to hundreds of parents and relatives of a “nyaope” addicts out there, this is a serious indictment against our lawenforcement authorities who sometimes tend to stretch the term “democracy” a little bit too far when it suits them. In fact, if the cops are serious about fighting and eradicating crime and criminals in the communities they serve, they will, sometimes, have to listen to the very people

I am worried about all the crime in and around Kathorus

do not want to sound like an alarmist, but living anywhere around Kathorus has become increasingly difficult for many residents.

Listening to the head of the Vosloorus SAPS talking on Kasie FM recently, made me and my neighbours a lot more aware about the dangers posed by crime in our communities. Unless we all stand up against crime, we will soon be overwhelmed by it.

the war against crime in our townships will continue to be an unwinnable war and soon criminals will be controlling our lives and our neighbourhoods.

It is up to us as law abiding citizens to support our police anti-crime structures such as the CPF and neighbourhood watch forums. Crime is not an isolated incident that happens in the dark or when no one is looking, but it is a criminal act planned and executed by people who are criminals.

Unless we are dead serious about eradicating the escalating rodent problem in our townships, we will have to change our mind-set about owls and learn that besides viewing them as “ambassadors” for witches and wizards at night, owls have a crucial role to play in our eco-system.

One of the core functions of owls in the ecosystem is to devour and consume the rodents that are causing mayhem in our homes and the environment.

In their wisdom, environmental health authorities have decided to introduce these night flying carnivores to deal with the rat issue, but now the snag is that, again, we see yet another noble act being slammed by those who believe owls are “evil” birds and therefore should have no role in being used to deal with societal issues, simply because some residents associate the night-flying birds with witchcraft.

Perhaps to help eradicate this and many other such nonsensical myths that seem to clog the minds of people, I would suggest that, instead of feeding viewers with meaningless television soap operas, the SABC should flight documentaries about these birds. Such a step would be appreciated more by parents of young toddlers who have had parts of their limbs gnawed off by these rodents.

As an animal lover I would find much more interest and value in watching such a documentary with my family than many of the current TV soapies.

“My sister was also used as a sex slave by these heartless vultures”

read your front page story in the October issue of Kathorus MAIL with a lot of interest.

You see, two years ago my young sister who was then 21, was also lured into the same life of drugs and sex by a gang of foreign African men. Although we did not know where she was, we later learnt from some of her close friends that she was living with a group of young women who were working for a Nigerian man as sex slaves.

By the time she returned home, she was a shadow of her former self, because she had lost weight and was

suffering from lung cancer, HIV/ Aids and TB. After she had passed on, two strange men arrived at our home and offered my parents money for the burial. The offer was turned down and my family asked them to leave.

I am writing this letter to warn parents and families to be very careful and protective of their daughters because there are vultures out there who will do anything to turn your daughter into a sex slave and drug addict.

Kathorus’ schools riddled with drugs Police step up raids to curb the abuse problem Drug and alcohol abuse among Kathorus’ school children are becoming a nightmare for parents, teachers and the police. The drug abuse not only takes place before and after school, but even during school hours.

According to the police in Katlehong and Vosloorus, incidents of learners found in possession of, and coming to school under the influence of drugs and alcohol, are raising serious concerns with the police, parents and the communities in areas where these schools are situated.

In an effort to stamp out and eradicate the rampant culture of drugs and alcohol abuse among learners at schools around Kathorus, the police in both areas have stepped up raids and conducted body searches on scholars at several secondary schools where this trend seems to have gotten out of hand.

Headmasters and teachers who refused to be interviewed by Kathorus MAIL at some of these secondary schools, are said to be victimised and bullied by these scholars and their gang members.

According to Captain Mega Ndobe of the Katlehong SAPS, the drug and alcohol situation at some schools has become so dire, the police have had to increase their raids and conduct body searches on students on a regular basis. Besides abusing drugs and selling some of these drugs to fellow students at school, many of these students also get involved in gang fights in which dangerous weapons are used during drug-induced fights.

In several photographs resembling scenes from the 70’s movies such as “Blackboard Jungle” featuring Black American actor Sidney Poitier and “The Cross and the Switchblade” which is about a Catholic priest who takes up the post of a principal at an unruly high school, students could be seen walking to the school premises and drinking and holding beer bottles, in what seems to be acts of open defiance of school rules.

“It is a war which we have to fight in order to prove to these children that what they are doing is wrong and that what we as the police are doing is

in fact right and for their own good,” explained a visibly frustrated Captain Ndobe, who first pioneered the anti-crime awareness campaigns with the former head of the station, Brig Johan Rens who recently retired after almost four decades in the police force.

Ndobe explained that the police will continue to conduct raids and body searches on learners. They will look for drugs, alcohol and weapons at local secondary school’s premises around Katlehong for as long as the threat of lawlessness exists. During the searches that were conducted learners were found possessing drugs, especially “nyaope”, dagga and an assortment of other undesirable paraphernalia such as matches, cigarette lighters, pen knives and pornographic material on their cell phones.

The children that were apprehended were often as young as 15.

Meanwhile, the office of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Vosloorus, claims to be facing a similar drugs and alcohol problem at a number of local high schools around the township. Drugs and alcohol abuse by pupils on school premises, during school hours, are some of the issues the local CPF structures on the ground have had to deal with in the past few months.

“It is still happening, because we continue to receive reports and complaints, but the over-all picture is not as bad as it was before,” said CPF Public Relations Officer Jerry Ramohapi.

Fears of faction fighting The SAPS in Katlehong are monitoring what they believe is a looming threat of faction violence among hostel dwellers in the Kathorus areas.

Already several crucial meetings have been held with the izi Nduna of the warring factions from the Mtubatuba, Nquthu and Msinga areas in Kwa Zulu Natal. In the photo police members from the Katlehong police station inspect a body found dead in what is linked to faction fighting between rival tribal gangs. Five people have been killed in the past few weeks in acts of violence which the police have linked to faction fighting.
