President’s Message

GREAT THINGS HAPPEN HERE

We are close to completing our most successful summer camp season ever! Over 1,200 camper registrations highlighted a very busy summer for the SJCC. Summer used to be a quiet time for the Centre but not anymore. I believe this bodes well for us as we transition to fall and then winter (I promised my wife that this winter will be mild). We know the SJCC is a well-utilized facility when the weather begins to turn colder. Our wonderful facilities and wonderful programs serve thousands of members, community residents, and visitors from other Ottawa neighborhoods and beyond. Our many social, educational, cultural, and recreational programs fill our days, weeks, and months with great opportunities for stimulating and enjoyable ways to expend our energy. I look forward to seeing you all enjoy our Centre! On an educational note, I bet you didn’t know that less than 21% of our overall operating budget comes from membership dues. That means we have to generate over $3,000,000 annually from program fees, fund raising, and other revenue sources. If you love our Centre and are so inclined, consider becoming a donor as well as a member. Any support you offer beyond the cost of membership is a great boost to helping us meet our program, service, and financial goals. You will also receive a tax receipt for all donations. Should you wish to speak to me about possibly offering additional support to the Centre, feel free to contact me at 613 798-9818 extension 268 or via email at bsohn@jccottawa.com. Thanks for your continued support and participation! Best Wishes to you and your family for the coming New Year!

Tribute Cards There is no better way to honour someone special than with a tribute gift to the Soloway JCC. A tribute gift not only recognizes the special times in someone’s life: a birthday, anniversary, graduation, a new baby or other important milestones, it also supports the important work of the SJCC. This is an extraordinary way to say thank you, recognize a job well done, or to remember the passing of a loved one. Give a gift that touches the heart, while it betters the lives of the Ottawa Jewish community. Tribute cards can be designated for specific programs, or gifts can be unrestricted and will be designated to the area of greatest need. For every donation received, a beautifully designed tribute card will be mailed to the recipient. Tax receipts will be issued for a minimum Chai donation of $18. BBYO is the exclusive partner in bringing the BULLY movie to teen audiences, and has partnered with Keshet, USY, NCSY, FROSTY. This version of the film and program is suitable to those over the age of 13.

New! Rebels, Radicals, and Rabbis: Greco-Roman Judaism (334 BCE-315 CE) In this course, we will survey the tumultuous history that led to the emergence of what we now know as Rabbinic Judaism. We will begin by examining Early Judaism in the Hellenistic period, beginning with the conquests of Alexander the Great, and continuing on through the early Rabbinic period within the context of Roman society. We will consider Judaism and sectarian groups in existence during these eras; sects such as the Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots, and others will be examined from literature such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Josephus, Philo, and the Pseudepigrapha. The Maccabean revolt (167-160 BCE) will be discussed, as will the Jewish-Roman wars, including the Bar Kokhba revolt (132-36 CE). Finally, we will explore the beginnings of Rabbinic Judaism and the codification of the Mishnah. All texts will be provided in English translation. Thursday, October 17, 7:30 pm Dr. Vardit Ravitsky — Assistant Professor in the Bioethics programs at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Montreal Thursday, October 24, 7:30 pm Topic: “Be fruitful and multiply”: Ethical Reflections on the Use of Reproductive Technologies in the Jewish world. “Be fruitful and multiply” –“Pru uRvu”– has been a profound component of Jewish tradition for centuries, and today it is supplemented by a ‘postHolocaust perspective’ that emphasizes the survival of the Jewish people. In Israel, as well as in Jewish communities around the world, these powerful cultural and historical forces create a pro-natalist attitude that influences the ways reproductive technologies are embraced and used. This talk will explore these social forces and the role they play in shaping Halachic approaches and Israeli public policy in the context of ethical dilemmas surrounding reproduction.

New! Yoga for Chronic Pain This specialty class is designed to decrease both physical and emotional pain, through retraining your nervous system to find freedom from pain. We will explore why the amount of pain that any of us experiences isn’t necessarily related to the actual damage present. The focus will be on how to learn to gradually increase the activity level of a painful area while knowing that some pain and stiffness will still occur. This requires patience and persistence. The goal is to achieve a long term reduction in chronic pain and stiffness and an improvement in function. Stretching and strengthening techniques will be supported by breath work and relaxation practices designed to lessen muscle tension, through exploring breathing patterns, movement, relaxation and meditation. The pool office handles first aid and emergency response for the entire SJCC, and features a small Aquatic Pro Shop with discount prices on goggles, caps, and other items commonly required by our swimmers. In order to help us keep our pool clean, please remember to shower with soap and water before entering the pool.

General Pool & Hot Tub Schedule The pool is open from the time the building opens to one 1/2 hour before the building closes (some exceptions). Swimmers will find one lap lane open at all times except during group lessons and major swim team practices. Our hot tub is also open from the time the building opens to onehalf hour before closing, except during restricted gender swims (where access is granted to men or women only).

Admission Standards for Children New standards have been issued by the Office of the Chief Coroner to assist lifeguards in maintaining adequate surveillance over the whereabouts and the activities of young bathers while they are inside the pool enclosure. •

Children ages 8 to 10 are required to pass a swim test in order to swim unsupervised. Children who do not complete the test are required to be directly supervised by a parent or guardian (16+) who is present in the water within arms reach at all times. Children under the age of 8 may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian (16+) who is in the water within arms reach of the child, with a maximum of two children for each parent or guardian

CHILDREN/YOUTH AQUATIC PROGRAMS Lifesaving Society’s Pre–School Program Parent and Tot 1 (3–12 months) Parent and Tot 2 (12–24 months) Parent and Tot 3 (22–36 months) This exciting program structures in-water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing waterpositive attitudes and skills. Activities are planned based on the child’s maturity so parents register in the level appropriate for their child’s age.

Preschool A (3–5 yrs) 1:3 We’ll help these little swimmers jump into the water, and learn to float, glide and kick with assistance. They’ll learn the importance of staying “within arms reach” and become comfortable putting their faces in and blowing bubbles.

Preschool B (3–5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump in on their own and learn to float, glide and kick with an aid. They’ll learn to put on a lifejacket (Personal Floatation Device) and learn to move safely through the water on their front and back.

Preschool C (3–5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump into chest-deep water, learn to float, glide and kick on their own and retrieve an object from the bottom. They’ll gain exposure to deep water and learn the basics of rhythmic breathing.

Preschool D (3–5 yrs) 1:5 These kids are becoming quite the swimmers! They’ll jump into deep water, kick on their front and back, tread water and learn basic front and back crawl. They’ll learn the importance of swimming with a buddy and wearing a PFD/lifejacket.

Preschool E In an effort to keep our pool safe and properly maintained we must periodically close the pool for minor repairs. We will do our best to notify our members in advance and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

(3–5 yrs) 1:5 These advanced preschoolers will learn how to react if they fall unexpectedly into deep water. They’ll develop breath control, master short swims using front and back crawl, and begin developing whip kick.
