GREAT THINGS HAPPEN HERE The key to our success as a vibrant, busy, quality Centre is the many wonderful programs and services we provide. This spring we are doing a few things to make your accessibility to our programs and services easier. Primarily, we are converting our software system to include on-line registration. The conversion will be completed some time this spring and you will be able to register for programs through the convenience of your home computer or laptop! We have also reorganized the children and teen after school programs in our guide to make it easier to read. For example, all children’s and teen programs are organized by day. At one glance you will see all the program offerings per day and by age.

President’s Message

Our Camps administrators are working on what will prove to be another excellent summer camps experience at the SJCC. Last year we had over 1,000 camp registrations. In order to meet the demand of increased registration several new programs are being offered. Our new camp programs are highlighted by LEGO© Camp and Chemistry and Crime Camp as part of our specialty camps. We are also continuing to look at ways to add value to your membership. We will be rolling out some new programs soon that will be inclusive of your membership. One of these programs will be a new yoga class for those of you, like me, who need to work on core flexibility but don’t want to work too hard! Don’t forget to join us for another super celebration of Israel’s independence. Our Yom Ha’atzmaut community celebration will be held April 26 at the brand new CE Centre. This event is another way the SJCC brings the community together. As always, thanks for your support! I look forward to seeing you enjoy our wonderful Centre!

Barry J. Sohn President/COO

Circle of Friends The Circle of Friends Donor Program was created to help sustain the viability of the Soloway JCC. Your support will help develop and maintain the ongoing social, cultural, physical, recreational and educational needs of our Jewish community and the community at large. It is essential for the Soloway JCC to raise additional revenue in order to remain a leading and viable Centre for the next 50 years and beyond. The Circle of Friends Program is strictly a donation on top of, or in lieu of, membership dues. There are no membership benefits tied to Circle of Friends Donor Program. A tax receipt is issued for the full amount of your donation. Thank you for your continued support!

Donations

There are many ways to contribute to the Soloway JCC and many types of gifts you can give: open an Endowment Fund named by you to mark an anniversary, wedding, or simcha, to honour an individual or in memory of a loved one or make a legacy gift of a life insurance policy. Establishing a fund is a gift forever, ensuring a strong community for future generations. Tribute Cards There is no better way to honour someone special than with a tribute gift to the Soloway JCC. A tribute gift not only recognizes the special times in someone’s life: a birthday, anniversary, graduation, a new baby or other important milestones, it also supports the important work of the SJCC. This is an extraordinary way to say thank you, recognize a job well done, or to remember the passing of a loved one. Give a gift that touches the heart, while it betters the lives of the Ottawa Jewish community. Tribute cards can be designated for specific programs, or gifts can be unrestricted and will be designated to the area of greatest need. For every donation received, a beautifully designed tribute card will be mailed to the recipient. 5BY SFDFJQUT XJMM CF JTTVFE GPS B NJOJNVN $IBJ EPOBUJPO PG 5P TFOE B USJCVUF DBSE DPOUBDU +VMF 7FSUFT FYU t KWFSUFT!KDDPUUBXB DPN

Early Beginnings Multicultural Child Development Centre supports the belief that young children learn through action and that a good environment for learning should exercise and challenge the development of each child. As teachers of Early Childhood Education, we view our role as supporters of child development. It is our intention to provide an environment wherein each child is encouraged to express him/herself at his or her personal best. Our program considers the total growth of a child–social, emotional, physical and intellectual.

May 23 (73 min.) This fascinating documentary examines the remarkable life of Ruth Gruber journalist, author and humanitarian who at the age of 20 became the world’s youngest PhD. Now 98 years old Gruber is still lively and articulate. She reported from the Soviet Arctic, escorted Holocaust refugees and sent dispatches from the ship Exodus in 1947. Gruber narrates the story of her life through interviews and lectures supported by archival footage to make a thoroughly engrossing and award winning film.

The Boys

June 27 (102 min.) In this documentary we are introduced to Robert and Richard Sherman, an astoundingly prolific Academy-Award winning songwriting team. The duo composed such famous songs as “A Spoonful of Sugar(Mary Poppins) and “ I Wa’na Be Like You(Jungle Book). Despite their amazing musical accomplishments the relationship between the two brothers outside of work was acrimonious and though they lived only 7 blocks away from one another they had no contact with each other when not at work. This film is interspersed with many familiar and toe tapping tunes, and presents a fascinating portrait of these two talented brothers and their troubled relationship.

A Matter of Size

July 17 (90 min.) A comedy set in Israel about a group of overweight men who turn to Sumo wrestling to obtain respect in life. Herzl has been struggling with his weight problem since boyhood a situation exacerbated by his over-bearing mother’s constant nagging. A solution presents itself when the newly unemployed Herzel takes a job washing dishes in a Japanese restaurant and discovers the restaurant owner is a former sumo wrestling coach. Herzl soon discovers that his dedication to this men only sport threatens his relationship with his girlfriend Zehava.

I am Not Filipina

August 21 (52 min.) A fascinating documentary that examines Israel’s immigration laws for non-Jews through the plight of a Filipino girl. Krizel, is a blind, six year old Philippine girl, born in Israel, and adopted by a Philippine foreign worker. There is a chance that an eye operation could restore Krizel’s eyesight and improve her chances to remain in Israel. Both daughter and mother face deportation because there are no papers to prove Krizel’s birth and the mother’s visa has expired.

Tickets are available at the SJCC front desk. They can also be reserved by phone with a credit card or purchased at the lecture. For tickets, please call 613-798-9818 ext. 295.

Daud and his brother Saleh, Jewish musicians who lived in Iraq in the 1930’s, were the most celebrated musicians and composers of their time, often performing in the court of the King, and are still considered to be the creators of modern Iraqi music. When they immigrated to Israel in the 1950’s, however, their middle-eastern music was not embraced by the Westernoriented cultural establishment of the nascent state, and they became marginalized and almost forgotten. Enlightened Jewish Education New! From Shtetl to The Goldene Medina How Yiddish stories and poems responded to our ancestor’s journey from the Shtetl/Eastern Europe to North America, the Golden Land. This course will look at short stories and novellas by some of the great Yiddish writers – among them Shalom Aleichem, I.L. Peretz, Shalom Asch, David Bergleson, Isaac B. Singer, Dvora Baron. All stories will be read and discussed in English. In partnership with AJA50+ May 10 – May 31 Thursday 10:00 am – 11:30 am . t /. Instructor: Rabbi Steven Garten FMS3001

New! A Midrashic Look at Torah

“Reading what’s not there” The Torah tells its stories on a “need to know basis”, often leaving out important details. The very nature of its narrative requires the reader to fill in the gaps with his/her imagination. The Rabbis of the ‘midrash’ created stories about stories in the Bible, presenting keen interpretations and powerful lessons, expanding the narratives and widening their horizons. April 17 – May 29 Tuesday 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm . t /. Instructor: Rabbi Charles Popky No class: May 8 FMS3002

New! Deuteronomy/Devarim On the eve of entry into the promised land that Moses will never see, the Israelite leader addresses his nation one last time. Deuteronomy re-tells the stories and laws of the Torah from the mouth of the prophet and in so doing teaches the Israelites about God, nationhood, free will, justice, and community, while at the same time expounding revolutionary philosophies of both religion and politics. Deuteronomy is the text that makes Judaism into the “religion of the book.” Join us as we round out our discussion of the Torah with this final and arguably most significant piece of writing in the history of Judaism. SALT WATER POOL The Levitank pool is a 4 lane, 25m Main Pool with a beach-like ramp, therapeutic hot tub, shallow baby pool, slide, and patio lounge. A salt water pool means a healthier swim without the itchy, burning red eyes or strong chlorine smell that usually accompanies a dip in the pool. The mild saline feels soft on your skin and it has been proven to be advantageous for asthmatics and allergy prone swimmers. The pool office handles first aid and emergency response for the entire Soloway JCC, and features a small Aquatic Pro Shop with discount prices on goggles, caps, and other items commonly needed by our swimmers.

GENERAL POOL & HOT TUB SCHEDULE The pool is open from the time the building opens to one 1/2 hour before the building closes (some exceptions). Swimmers will find one lap lane open at all times except during group lessons and major swim team practices. Our hot tub is also open from the time the building opens to one-half hour before closing, except during restricted gender swims (where access is granted to men or women only).

NEW ADMISSION STANDARDS FOR CHILDREN New standards have been issued by the Office of the Chief Coroner to assist lifeguards in maintaining adequate surveillance over the whereabouts and the activities of young bathers while they are inside the pool enclosure. t Children ages 8 to 10 are required to pass a swim test in order to swim unsupervised. Children who do not complete the test are required to be directly supervised by a parent or guardian (16+) who is present in the water within arms reach at all times. t Children under the age of 8 may not be admitted to the swimming pool unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian (16+) who is in the water within arms reach of the child, with a maximum of two children for each parent or guardian

CHILDREN/YOUTH AQUATIC PROGRAMS Lifesaving Society’s Pre–School Program Parent and Tot 1 (3–12 months) Parent and Tot 2 (12–24 months) Parent and Tot 3 (22–36 months) This exciting program structures in-water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills. Activities are planned based on the child’s maturity so parents register in the level appropriate for their child’s age.

Preschool A (3–5 yrs) 1:3 We’ll help these little swimmers jump into the water, and learn to float, glide and kick with assistance. They’ll learn the importance of staying “within arms reach” and become comfortable putting their faces in and blowing bubbles.

Preschool B (3–5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump in on their own and learn to float, glide and kick with an aid. They’ll learn to put on a lifejacket (Personal Floatation Device) and learn to move safely through the water on their front and back.

Preschool C (3–5 yrs) 1:3 These little swimmers will jump into chest-deep water, learn to float, glide and kick on their own and retrieve an object from the bottom. They’ll gain exposure to deep water and learn the basics of rhythmic breathing.

Preschool D (3–5 yrs) 1:5 These kids are becoming quite the swimmers! They’ll jump into deep water, kick on their front and back, tread water and learn basic front and back crawl. They’ll learn the importance of swimming with a buddy and wearing a PFD/lifejacket.

Preschool E In an effort to keep our pool safe and properly maintained we must periodically close the pool for minor repairs. We will do our best to notify our members in advance and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

(3–5 yrs) 1:5 These advanced preschoolers will learn how to react if they fall unexpectedly into deep water. They’ll develop breath control, master short swims using front and back crawl, and begin developing whip kick.

Swim Patrol Rookie (Swimmer 7)

1:5 These beginners will become comfortable opening their eyes and exhaling underwater. They will be introduced to floating, gliding and kicking and jumping into the water. This level is geared to those who are over 5 and have not learned to submerge underwater and have little or no swimming experience.

1:8 These swimmers will begin the exciting journey into advanced swimming and basic lifesaving. They’ll improve their strokes, speed and endurance, while learning techniques that can save lives. Perfect for kids looking for more than simply swimming lessons.

Swimmer 2

1:8 These junior lifesavers will continue to build strength, efficiency and fitness through workouts and drills designed to improve their strokes and skills. They’ll learn the rescue and first aid skills that will help them make wise choices around the water.

1:5 Participants will jump into deep water and learn to support themselves with an aid. Learn the foundation of effective whip kick. They will build confidence in both deep and shallow water, and develop front and back crawl over short distances.

Swimmer 3

1:6 These swimmers will dive, jump and roll into the water and develop water-smart attitudes. They will improve their front and back crawl, tread water add propulsion to their whip kick, swim underwater and continue to build endurance with swims of up to 50 meters.

Swimmer 4 1:6 These swimmers will refine both entry and surface dives. They will learn eggbeater kick, sculling and breaststroke while continuing to improve their front and back crawl and work towards a 100 meter endurance swim.

Swimmer 5 1:6 These swimmers will master shallow dives, eggbeater and foot– first sculling. Surface dives will take them down to underwater swims while sprints and interval training will improve both the efficiency and endurance of their breaststroke, front and back crawls.

Swimmer 6 1:6 These swimmers will perfect their swimming strokes while building up to a 300 meter endurance swim. They will perfect a variety of movement and underwater skills while continuing to build fitness and efficiency through sprints and interval swim training.

Low Ratio Classes If you love lessons but prefer a smaller class size this program is perfect for you.

From OJCS: For children registered in a group class or private lesson beginning at 4:00 or 4:30 pm Monday-Thursday.

Low Ratio Classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday. Preschool classes are limited to three; Swimmer 1 and 2 have three participants and Swimmer 3-6 is limited to four.

From Early Beginnings: For children registered in a group class or private lesson beginning at 4:30 pm or later Monday-Thursday.

Swimmer Levels

From Rambam: For children registered in a group class or a private lesson beginning at 4:30 pm or later Monday-Thursday.

Our Swimmer program ensures that children learn how to swim before they get in too deep. Swimmer progressions accommodate 5 to 12-year-olds including absolute beginners as well as swimmers who want to build on the basics. We stress plenty of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. Water Smart® education is incorporated into all levels.

Canadian Swim Patrol Swim Patrol is the on-ramp to lifeguarding for 9-12-yearolds who are ready to go beyond swim lessons. Swim Patrol has 3 levels – Rookie, Ranger & Star. Content is organized in 3 groups – Water Proficiency, First Aid, and Rescue. Swim Patrol develops swimming strength and efficiency with emphasis on Water Smart® behavior. Skill drills enhance capability in the water, good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment.

A member of our aquatics team will pick-up your child, help them get changed, and bring them to their lesson. Following their lesson children can be picked-up, or, for an additional fee, can stay at the Soloway JCC and take part in our After School Care program.
