Got Him!

Local police officers in Benidorm have arrested and detained fugitive Dave Grundy, the 53-year-old British citizen who had been on the run for five days. Despite his name and face being spread across the local press and on social media, his whereabouts was unknown. The man was found inside a car in Calle Estocolmo in the Rincón de Loix, one of the most popular areas of the city frequented by British tourists, when he was taken by surprise by local police as he returned to his vehicle in the early hours of Sunday morning. Sources have said they believed that Mr Grundy could have gone to Benidorm immediately after fleeing the scene on June 13th, when he allegedly stabbed his partner, a 42-year-old British woman at his Campoamor home. When he was found by the Policia Local following a tip-off from their counterparts in Pilar de la Horadada, he had €4,600 in cash and a significant amount of clothes with him and police suspect that he was preparing to flee the country. The manhunt began after Grundy’s partner, named as Nicola Anne Walker Houghton, was found by her daughter lying in a pool of blood with a large knife in her back last Tuesday morning. She was rushed to hospital where her initial condition was described as ‘very grave’.

Always buy before you fly Currency and exchange is always swings and roundabouts. Some you win and some you gain. If you’re planning a trip back to the UK to escape the summer heat, then you’re certainly going to gain but if you have family and friends coming to join you in Spain, then it’s worth passing on the following advice to them. In a sentence, make sure they exchange their pounds before they get to the airport. The pound has been unstable ever since Brexit, and following the General Election, the currency has plummeted even further, falling below the euro at airports, according to reports from many travellers. Of course, exchanging currency at the airport is always going to be the most expensive/worst deal to be found, but the news that £1 won’t even get you €1 in the terminal should motivate people to plan ahead even more. The Independent newspaper has allegedly seen pho-

tographs of the 0.9848 exchange rate at Gatwick’s Moneycorp exchange centre, meaning that for £100 you will only get €98.48 in return. And if you’re travelling to the US then the situation isn’t much better, with £100 getting you a measly $110.24. Considering that a recent report by the Post Office found that prices in popular tourist resorts in Europe have risen sharply, holidays are going to be trickier for British tourists this summer. Simon Phillips from No 1 Currency said: “I don’t think we are going to see a flat, easy, forecastable sterlingeuro or sterling-dollar figure for some time yet,” he said. “Let’s face it, we have got Brexit negotiations to go through – in whatever form they take – and the markets don’t know what that means. Uncertainty is what breeds exchange-rate variation and there is a load of it.”

London Inferno by Ray Chadwick

It will no doubt be some time before the truth is out there about not only what initially started one of the biggest fires seen in the UK for decades, but why it spread as quickly as it did.

This is neither the time nor the place for speculation. Nobody could have failed to be highly shocked at the images on their TV screens they woke to on Wednesday morning, seeing a 24-storey building in London engulfed in flames and billowing smoke reminding many of the September 11th day 16 years ago in New York. As the day drew on, the similar sight of the building collapsing wouldn’t have been a surprise, such was the perilous state of the high-rise block. As this report goes to press, the Metropolitan Police have said that 30 people are confirmed dead, with an additional 28 currently missing and presumed dead. Broadcasters, including the BBC, have reported that the final figure could be around 70; others have suggested the final death toll will run well into three-figures as the number of people in the Grenfell Tower at the time is unknown. Police and the local authorities have

faced continual criticism at the lack of numbers being released but they are only following official major incident guidance which says: “There should be no speculation on fatality figures and the police should only confirm the number of dead after they have a true and accurate picture.” Emergency services received the first report of the fire at 00:54 local time and sent hundreds of fire-fighters and 45 fire engines to control the fire, with many continuing to attempt to control pockets of fire that broke out on the higher floors after most of the rest of the building had been gutted over 24 hours later. Residents of surrounding buildings were evacuated due to concerns that the tower could collapse, though the building was later determined to be structurally sound. However, on Saturday – 72 hours after the fire started – Latimer Road Underground station was closed for a while due to worries about the state of the remaining shell at that time. Initially, it was believed that up to 600 people might have been in the 120 one-and two-bedroom flats at the time the fire broke out. Sixty-five were rescued by fire-fighters, and 74 people were confirmed to be in five hospitals across London, many of whom had made

their own way with minor injuries; 17 of them were in a critical condition. According to witnesses, there were people trapped inside, waving and screaming from windows for help, some holding children. There were two witness accounts of parents dropping their children down to people below, including a baby who was caught after being thrown from the ninth or tenth floor, and a small boy thrown from the fifth or sixth floor. In scenes also reminiscent of 9/11, there were also eyewitness reports that some people were jumping out from all levels. These accounted for the initial six people that were confirmed dead as they were found in the area surrounding the tower. The Prime Minister, Theresa May, met survivors and residents of the tragedy in Downing Street on Saturday. As part of a statement issued after the meeting, she said: “I wanted to listen to their concerns and reassure them personally that Government is there for them – and that everything possible will be done to help them through the hugely difficult days, weeks, months and years to come. The response of the emergency services, NHS and the community has been heroic. “But, frankly, the support on the ground for families

who needed help or basic information in the initial hours after this appalling disaster was not good enough.” She went on to say that, “Victims have concerns their voice will not be heard, that their many questions about this tragedy will not be answered. That is why I ordered a Public Inquiry, with the costs for providing victims with legal representation met by Government.” In what is sadly becoming a weekly occurrence at the moment, the Government announced a one-minute’s silence which took place yesterday (Monday) at 1100 London time in honour of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. In terms of lives lost, it will probably be the highest toll since the Bradford FC stadium fire in 1985 which killed 56. The largest number of deaths due to fire in the UK was the Theatre Royal fire in Exeter which claimed 186 lives in September 1887.

Spain’s economy for May - in figures

It pays to advertise

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) grew in May 2017 by 1.9% year-onyear, seven tenths less than in April, according to figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

sales@ewnmediagroup.com

This performance was mainly due to lower fuel and oil prices and a drop in the costs of holidays now the Easter Campaign is over. In monthon-month terms, CPI fell by 0.1% in May, compared to the 0.5% increase in the same month of 2016. Prices of energy products increased in May by 8.3% year-on-year, 3.7 points less than in April. This trend is due to the easing of fuel and oil prices, which fell from 11.5% yearon-year in April to 4.9% in May. Meanwhile, gas prices rose by 1.7 points to 8.3%, and the year-onyear performance of electricity prices remained unchanged at 16.2%. Food prices grew by 1.2% in May, the same as in April. Unprocessed food prices increased by 2.8%, driven by the price of pulses and fresh vegetables (down by 3.8 points

to 3.3%) and, to a lesser extent, fresh fruit (down from 5% in April to 3.2% in May). Processed food, drinks and tobacco prices increased by 0.4% in May. Core inflation (which excludes the most volatile elements of CPI, fresh food and energy) eased by two tenths in May to 1%, due to the easing of prices of services and, to a lesser extent, of non-energy industrial goods (NEIG), partly offset by the faster growth rate of processed food prices. Prices of services eased by four tenths to 1.7%, as a result of the performance of package tours, where inflation dropped from 20.9% in April to 7.9% in May. The Easter calendar effect played a part in this trend; in 2017 Easter fell in April while in 2016 it fell in March. Meanwhile, NEIG prices slowed by two tenths to 0.1%, on the back of falling prices of clothing and footwear which went from 0.3% in April to 0.1% in May. In month-on-month terms, the CPI decreased by -0.1% in May 2017 compared to a growth of 0.5% recorded in the same month of 2016. Broken down by components, energy product prices fell by 1.1%, following the 2.3% rise in the previous year, services shrank by 0.4% after

the 0.1% growth in May 2016; NEIG prices grew by 0.7%, a tenth less than in May the previous year, and food prices increased by 0.3%, the same as in May 2016. Within the food category, prices of unprocessed food rose by a monthon-month 0.3% in May 2017 (versus 0.8% in the same month of 2016), as did processed food (no change over the previous year). Year-on-year CPI shrank in May in all autonomous regions, with the biggest fall over April’s figure being recorded by Asturias (one point to 1.6%), and the smallest falls, both by three tenths, being recorded by the Canary Islands (2% in May) and Extremadura (1.7%). The year-on-year constant tax CPI rate for May stood at 1.9%, the same as the general CPI. The INE has also published the harmonised CPI (CPIA) for May 2017, with a year-on-year variation of 2%, down by six tenths over April’s figure. Meanwhile, the rate advanced by Eurostat for the Eurozone was 1.4% in May, half a point lower than the previous month, giving rise to an inflation differential favourable to Spain over the Eurozone of 0.6 points, one tenth lower than April’s figure

Passengers are a pain in the back seat

With the summer getaway just around the corner, a time when families traditionally spend many hours on the road together, a YouGov survey commissioned by The Motor Ombudsman, the automotive dispute resolution provider, has found that nearly two-fifths (38%) of drivers deem the unwanted comments of back-seat drivers to be the main cause of in-car arguments. The poll of over 1,500 British motorists was carried out ahead of the launch of The Motor Ombudsman’s “Stay cool this summer” social media campaign on 21 June. The month-long initiative will offer consumers tips for how they can resolve disputes quickly and calmly with their garage in order to achieve a fair outcome and a positive ongoing relationship. In addition, individuals will have the chance to win weekly prizes on Twitter and Facebook to help them stay refreshed as the mercury rises. The latest study also revealed children shouting, crying and fighting as the second biggest cause of arguments when on a journey (17%). Similarly, one in seven respondents stated that passengers adjusting buttons and dials (14%), changing the radio station or choice of music (14%), and occupants leaving rubbish in the car (14%), are some of the most likely irritations to provoke a dispute with their fellow passengers. To diffuse the situation, over half (53%) of people who have had an argument with passengers while driving, said that they adopt a direct and firm approach for the behaviour to be nipped in the bud there and then. Conversely, almost a quarter (24%) of those questioned prefer a more “laissez-faire” approach by seeing if the situation improves prior to taking any action. The majority (48%) of drivers who have argued, think resolving an in-car clash helps to reduce stress. A third

of people equally cited that the most important reasons for bringing a dispute to a close were to avoid a repeat of the same arguments (33%), to make future journeys more relaxing by agreeing a compromise (33%), and to have improved relations with others (32%). In order to let off steam with someone that is impartial and independent of the disagreement, once out of the car, almost one in four (24%) share their side of the argument with their other half, whilst 10% prefer to impart their views of the dispute with friends. Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “Although holidays are an exciting time, being confined to a small space on a long journey can cause tension in the car. As with any differences of opinion, whether with family or a business, it is important for all parties involved to take the time to try to conclude any issues in a cool and constructive way to help prevent the problems from reoccurring. However, just as importantly, the campaign is highlighting that there is help out there for motorists should there be a problem during the purchase, servicing or repair of a car that they haven’t been able to sort out directly with their garage.”

WhatsApp changes from end of June

Popular messaging app WhatsApp, in 2016 had said that it will stop its support of outdated devices. The Facebook-owned company had said that the app will stop running on many older smartphones including iPhone, Windows Phone, Nokia, Android and BlackBerry. Meanwhile, as a change of heart, WhatsApp had decided that it will be extending its support for BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS, Nokia Symbian and Nokia S40 until the end of June 2017. In December 2016 itself, many other old smartphones did, however, lose the support of the popular messaging application. But perhaps you do not have to worry as if specifications are taken into consideration then not too many devices will get affected, especially on iOS and Android. So if your device still runs the iOS 6, WhatsApp has already ended its support and it is the same case with Windows 7 mobiles. But now, by the end of this month, the app will stop working on BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS, Nokia Symbian and Nokia S40 too. For Android, the support for WhatsApp ends for devices which are running on Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 while for Windows it is devices with Windows 7 as their OS. When it comes to Apple devices the iPhone 3GS and iPhones still run on iOS 6. There are way too fewer phones with the Android specifications. According to the Google’s dashboard in November this year, only 0.1% smartphones still run on Android Froyo. So if you

have an Android IceCream Sandwich or the Android Jelly Bean then you need not worry as of now. Apple’s data from October this year, suggest that about 8 percent of smartphones run on iOS below the iOS9 version. WhatsApp in its previous blog had said that the support for the messaging app will end on many smartphones because they do not ‘offer the kind of capabilities’ needed by it to expand the features of the app. WhatsApp, with more than a billion monthly active users, has become the world’s most popular instant messaging app. These devices will not run WhatsApp anymore: BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 Nokia S40 Nokia Symbian S60 Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 Windows Phone 7 iPhone 3GS/iOS 6

According to some reports, WhatsApp is planning on coming up with a ‘recall’ feature on its app, where users can revoke messages even after sending them. WhatsApp might also roll out another feature which will enable users to change their numbers within the app itself. If the user changes the number, a notification can be sent to chosen or all contacts about the switch.

Summer safety and security in Spain Security is the second highest rated reason when choosing Spain as a tourist destination. Even the World Economic Forum indicates that the country is the second safest country among the ten leading global tourist destinations, behind only Switzerland.

In this regard, the Safe Tourism Plan, which has once again been set in motion for the 2017 season, helps the tourist sector to become more competitive, thanks to the special security measures implemented for the season, among other measures, with greater numbers of personnel in those places where this is necessary due to the mass influx of people. A key element of the Safe Tourism Plan is carried out by the different Foreign Tourist Assistance Services (Spanish acronym: SATE) distributed throughout the whole of Spain, both in the islands and on the mainland. Each SATE provides a service for tourists in their own language and offers them advice on both reporting offences and on how to carry out the necessary formalities, for example cancelling credit cards and relations with embassies. During last year’s campaign, 41,799 people were attended by the 24 SATEs located in the main tourist destinations in the country and 20,182 offences were

reported and processed. Enhanced language training of State law enforcement officers, as well as the incorporation of foreign police officers to attend to and convey trust to their compatriots in tourist areas were also crucial. Juan Ignacio Zoido, the Spanish Interior Minister, highlighted cooperation and exchanges as “fundamental elements both for prevention and for attending to victims of crime swiftly and effectively”. One of the new features of the Safe Tourism Plan for 2017 is the start-up of the first SATE in the Canary Islands - specifically in the municipality of Santiago del Teide - which will be staffed by Guardia Civil officers, information personnel and interpreters to attend to foreign tourists visiting the area. Another important new feature, in this case at a national level, is a new version of the AlertCops App (application for mobile phones that allows direct contact with the State law enforcement agencies to report a criminal offence either as the victim or as a witness), which incorporates the possibility of communicating via a chatroom with tourists in more than 100 languages. Furthermore, tourists can be redirected via this chatroom to points of interest, such as their nearest SATE office, medical services and police stations so that they can easily make their way to these facilities via navigation channels on their mobile phone. Another new feature is that alerts sent out by tourists can be accompanied by photos or videos to facilitate the handling of the situation by the police.

Lastly, Operation Summer will allow an increased police presence in areas with large numbers of tourists. Specifically, the number of reinforcements scheduled to be brought in for this summer campaign amounts to 2,639 National Police and Guardia Civil officers, which doubles the figure for last year, of 1,227, and is the highest number since 2011. These officers will mainly be distributed during July and August (and until the end of September in the Balearic Islands) between Madrid, Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Valencia, Murcia, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. The Minister for Home Affairs underlined that “through all these initiatives and new features, we trust that all Spanish and foreign tourists will be able to enjoy their summer holidays in safety without having to worry about anything other than enjoying themselves and relaxing. We want to offer increased safety to tourists both during their stay in Spain and when travelling through the country”.

Why Tim Farron had to go Tim Farron was Liberal Democrat leader for just shy of two years. In that time, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that singled him out as a key player with policies and a rhetorical flourish that felt like a kick in the teeth for his opponents. And don’t fool yourself. Once, the Liberals frequently changed places with the Conservatives and were the de

facto party of state in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their decline, and merging with the Labour rebels of the Social Democratic Party in the 80s, formed the third force of British politics. Under Paddy Ashdown and the late, great, Charles Kennedy in particular, they were the dreamer’s vision for what a real, true and honestly alternative government might look like. They were a treasured voice in the House of Commons until 2010 when Nick Clegg sold the party’s liberal and progressive soul in alliance with the Conservatives. Even though there’s an argument to be made that Clegg did a constitutional service by settling the unfamiliar territory of a hung parliament, the party never recovered after a betrayal that allowed the austerity-driven Tories into power. But Farron, Clegg’s successor, was neither worthy of that mantle or Kennedy’s. His approach was tepid, his ideas unformed and he was subsumed in a Brexit debate that the Lib Dems - as the only unapologetically pro-EU, prosecond referendum party - should have triumphed in. What’s to be made of his resignation? Simply, the wrong

By Alastair Stewart man stepped down at the right time in the wrong way. Farron has been relentlessly dogged by the media for his Christian views and snidely targeted for refusing to say if he considered gay sex a sin. In his defence, neither Theresa May or Sadiq Khan, who both practice religion, have ever been subject to such a line of blunt sexual enquiry. The outrage if Khan, in particular as a Muslim, had been asked a similar question isn’t worth imagining because it could bean attempt to present him as a bigot on religious grounds. And that’s the point. Save for opportunism, the British press and the public have seldom cared in the same way as the Americans about the religion of their leaders. What Farron got spectacularly wrong was handling a line of idiotic questioning from Cathy Newman on Channel 4 with the elusiveness of someone who felt so enticingly awkward as it had to be made a news story. His resignation, in which he blamed the irreconcilability of being a practising Christian with the demands of leader are a face to palm moment best forgotten in British politics.

When Churchill bribed Franco

The Spanish Civil War is widely considered a prelude to the Second World War. All the central powers were peripherally involved, and Spain owed a debt of $212 million for supplies given by Nazi Germany to General Francisco Franco’s Nationalists. As such, there was a fear that Spain might come out on the side of Germany or Italy. In June 1940, the Spanish Ambassador to Berlin explicitly said that Franco was “ready under certain conditions to enter the war on the side of Germany and Italy.” By historically divine coincidence, Winston

Churchill became Prime Minister on the same day Adolf Hitler attacked the Low Countries of Europe on May 10, 1940. British officer Alan Hillgarth came up with the plan to bribe key Spanish military, political and business figures to ensure Spanish neutrality. The British ambassador in Madrid,Sir Samuel Hoare, warned that the money had to be paid to stave off support for Germany. In June 1940, he demanded $1m for the effort: “I personally urge authority be granted without delay, and that if you have doubts, the prime minister be consulted.” Although Britain was cash

strapped for the war effort, Churchill authorised MI6 to send millions of pounds via New York. He also persuaded Spanish banker Juan March to act as a secret agent. March orchestrated payments to Franco’s generals, and even his brother, on the understanding they would persuade him not to side with Hitler. When the Nazi leader and Franco

met in October at the Hendaye train station, Hitler was annoyed by Franco’s demands for joining Germany in the war, famously saying he would “rather have three or four teeth pulled” than meet him again. Spain, however, remained a real threat, particularly after the Battle of the Britain stopped the Nazis, and they became increasingly desperate for support. Hoare claimed that British money lead to the arrest of those planning to convince Franco to join the war effort in aid of Germany. And while Spain never formally did, Franco did pass information over to the Nazis and allowed Spanish volunteers to join the Nazis on the proviso they would only fight Soviet forces. The story is documented by Pere Ferrer in his book Juan March: The Most Mysterious Man in the World and Ángel Viñas, author of Bribes: How Churchill and March Bought Franco’s Generals. While the machinations of El Caudillo, Der Führer and Il Duce have all faded into dust, Churchill’s secret’s continue to reveal themselves 77 years after he saved civilisation.

Mayday: Looking at the general election result In October of 1974, Harold Wilson called a general election and wildly hedged his bets. Wilson, who had a minority government after a hung result that same year, came to regret it: the exit poll prediction of a 132 seat majority turned out to be worth only three for the Labour prime minister. He resigned in 1976. In 2007, Gordon Brown committed the opposite sin - he didn’t hold a snap general election, lacked a mandate and was dogged by media fatigue with his oscillating. Flash forward to 2017 and Theresa May has committed electoral Hari Kari. The Prime Minister needlessly gambled the majority of David Cameron and egregiously mistook support for Brexit as support for her. The SNP committed the inverse error in 2012: they convinced themselves that their repeated political victories since 2007 meant winning the independence referendum was a shoe in. If there’s a key factor at the heart of this, it’s bad instincts. Mrs May was elected in disaster and has governed as such. She is a premier who exists as a parody of herself - a flustered grandmother at a bake sale who forgot something. She, even more so than Boris Johnson, is the bumbling wreck that has consecutively failed to think on her feet and present a manifesto or Brexit strategy beyond ‘strong and stable’. Had there been a candidate less contentious than Jeremy Corbyn, or had Labour’s majority been even greater with lesser Tory numbers, then en masse revolution would have occurred against May’s play to stay. Indeed, imagine Article 50 wasn’t yet triggered: May would

have been denounced after a year in office as possessing none of the Churchillian boorishness required to tackle a continental bloc of 27 powers who all want to limit the UK making a success of its grand exit. If there is evidence to be found at how pathetically small May and her decidedly un-conservative Conservatives are, then consider the band she’s now in the pocket of. The Democratic Unionist Party are climate change denying, antigay, anti-abortion incorrigibles. They offer nothing savoury beyond numbers to prop up a weak leader. If a change is to be made, it must be done so by looking hard facts in the eye with none of the rhetoric embellishments entwined with elections and seeing things as they really are.

Clegg gives support for cannabis regulation Shortly before losing his seat at the recent General Election, former leader of the Liberal Democrats and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg wrote an article for the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in which he outlines why he believes a legal and regulated cannabis market would show marked improvements in public health. Just as alcohol prohibition in 1920s America drove users towards increasingly potent and dangerous drinks, “the illicit cannabis industry has responded to criminal enforcement by developing products that maximise profit, with no consideration for the health of its customers,” Clegg writes. “Skunk” is a direct result of prohibition, he argues. New cultivation methods “have pushed up potency over the past 20 years” and the market is “saturated by a highstrength product associated with severe mental health problems.” Skunk is now sold without any effective restriction to about two million UK consumers a year, including large numbers of children, he says. Yet politicians “expect us to believe that the criminal law will prevail, despite no evidence that this approach has ever worked anywhere in the world.” This is irresponsible and unimaginative, he argues. Unlike the Conservative and Labour election manifestos, which made no mention of the cannabis problem, the Liberal Democrat manifesto included a clear commitment to regulate the market. Legalising and regulating the milder forms of the drug “would end the lottery where cannabis users have no idea what they are buying,” he explains, while sales from licensed outlets would be taxed, “capturing £1bn a year which is currently lost to organised crime.” The former MP concludes: “We are not arguing to ‘liberalise’ drug laws - cannabis of unknown content and potency is already available to any adults and children who want it. This is a debate about the merits of regulation versus a system without any control. The opponents of regulation should ask themselves this: what other public health problem do we contract out entirely to organised criminals?”

Child poverty still a concern Nearly 2.5 million children under the age of 18, accounting for 29.7% of the entire child population nationwide, remain at risk of poverty. This is according to a formal response from the Partido Popular (PP) government of President Mariano Rajoy to a parliamentary question posed by the Socialist party (PSOE) legislative group in Spain’s Congress of Deputies. While representing a slight year-on-year decrease that breaks with a six-year upward trend since 2011, the level of child poverty in the country is still of concern to political parties and non-government organizations campaigning in defence of children’s rights and against poverty that severely impacts Spain’s youth population. At the same time, one organisation

working to direct more attention to the problem of child poverty in Spain says that this summer some 580,000 children between the ages of six and 13 will be left at home alone. The reason says NGO Educo, is that the children’s parents are among the 2.5 million working poor in Spain who cannot afford to send their children to summer school or summer camp programs or pay for childcare services while they are away at work. And, despite the work of many community food-banks across Spain, which serve more than 1.5 million people including some 350,000 children, it is estimated that one in three Spanish children remain unable to regularly access the consumption of milk and protein sources essential to their growth and physical and mental health.

Whistle for it The problem with the insane world we now live in is we can’t tell if technical innovation is an elaborate prank or not. There was much hilarity in the office when a ‘Voice Activated’ notice was pinned to the new toaster. When computers entered our lives I was disinterested and frankly felt challenged. Then something happened that changed my world. My wife, who was more a geek than I am, explained about webcams. “Look, these are actual pictures of San Francisco being taken at this moment.” My face must have been a picture too: “You’re telling me that if San Francisco was hit by an earthquake right now we would see it?”

By Feature writer Sandy Shore

She assured me that we would and for me the revelation can only be described as seismic. We have a right to be sceptical as one simply cannot predict what the next invention will be let alone question it. When in my twenties I decided my clapped out kettle needed replacing. Calling in at the shop that sold electrical appliances I was shown the options. Two kettles in particular caught my attention but I just couldn’t decide which was best. There being a price difference I asked the shop’s owner why this was so when the two kettles appeared similar. I kid you not, that madam, without blinking an eyelid or a curl of her lip, explained that the more expensive kettle rather than shrieking whistled God Save the Queen. I am embarrassed to tell you: I looked at the shopkeeper and asked her if she was pulling my leg. With deadpan face that woman repeated her lie: “yes, when it boils it whistles the national anthem.” “That is so interesting,” I said as I got my money out and paid for the damned thing. On reaching my apartment I put water in my brand new patriotic kettle and I plugged it in. I know a watched kettle never boils but this one did. But, when it did so the kettle’s whistle was the same as that of any other whistling kettle. There was little point in my standing to attention or saluting the appliance. My new kettle was no more capable of whistling God Save the Queen than I was of setting fire to an orphanage.

This occasioned a dilemma for me: Do I return the kettle to the shop and seek a refund or do I grin and bear it. I took the latter option and on this occasion it was the better option.

Why May is wrong about human rights By Alastair Stewart In the aftermath of the London terror attacks, Theresa May said she would change human rights laws if they “get in the way” of tackling terror in the UK. The problem with this is three-fold. Firstly, British security services already possess extensive anti-terrorism powers that have been denounced by Amnesty International as among “the most draconian” in Europe. Secondly, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) has nothing to do with the EU. It came into effect in 1953 (ironically, Conservative MP and Scotsman Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe was instrumental in the drafting). The Council of Europe is separate from the EU and was established in 1949. The best-known body of the Council is the European Court of Human Rights, which enforces the Convention. To make the Convention practical, and to save people the cost of going to the ECtHR, the Labour Party produced the Human Rights Act 1998. To do away with human rights, or repeal them, would require the same majority of which May now scarcely enjoys from a party now gunning for her. David Cameron only ever flirted with the idea because he wanted to appease Eurosceptics by introducing a ‘British Bill of Rights (ignoring that the country invented Magna Carta and the limits to absolute monarchy). May wanted to scrap it altogether in 2011 when she was Home Secretary. The Act protects fundamental freedoms, including the right to a fair trial which is what May finds distasteful about terror suspects. Thirdly, what would the absence of the Human Rights Act look like? Consider Spain, which only became a signatory to the Convention in 1977. The Franco regime engaged in hundreds of thousands of acts of barbarism including torture, medical experimentation, political repression and death squads.

The British tortured, too. It’s been an integral component throughout our history, including as recently in Kenya in the 1950s, the Troubles in Northern Ireland and into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Worse, still, the UK is permitted under Article 15 to ‘derogate’, or depart from, parts of the Convention in a “time of emergency”, such as events “threatening the life of the nation.”

Look closer, and you see what happens when the state gets security obsessed. Democratic traditions, as in Spain and Germany, can easily be overturned when one life is considered expendable. When you pull on one thread, you should consider the larger tapestry. Human rights are an instrument for the protection of people, and removing them from Britain risks citizens at both home and abroad.

A brief update from Santa Clara dog shelter We have now cleared the land and are waiting for it to settle before starting the foundations. We are still fund raising and getting closer but we need your help to complete the build of the new shelter so that we can help the dogs at Santa Clara have a better place to live in. Santa Clara has a NO kill policy and we do not put an healthy dog to sleep. We often have old dogs that have been abandoned or are handed into the shelter by their owner who simply says they are too old, no good for breeding, no good for hunting, got a new dog so the old one is surplus to requirements, not well so who wants to pay for medications. The excuses go on. At Santa Clara we have several old dogs and two such older dogs are featured this week. Valentina is 17 YEARS OLD, used as a breeding bitch. Now she is a little deaf, her eyes are cloudy but such a sweet loving old lady. We are desperately trying to find her a home to spend what time she has left in. She was freezing cold at the shelter last winter so we must find her a home where she can have a soft bed and be kept warm for

It never rains but it pours – how true! We go months with never a drop, then it buckets down!

And so it is with problems - our water-related woes were not finished with last week’s leak – the pool felt the need to join in with the fun, and turned light blue. It looked quite pretty, the sort of pool that a child might paint, but water should be see-through, and our pool, although an attractive colour, was more than opaque. Frank answered the clarion call of the beleaguered Biggs’s. ‘Your water’s dead.’ He said in much the same voice as he might say ‘Your lettuce has bolted.’ I was surprised. I never regarded water has being either alive or dead. I have heard of ‘the Water of Life’ and various other such phrases, but I always thought of them as rhetorical. However, Frank should know, he’s the expert. The only solution was to empty the pool. I have no idea how to calculate how much water is in a pool – I am happy to accept ‘a lot’ as being an adequate answer. While we were pondering how long it would take us to form a human chair of 2 and bucket the water out Frank had rigged up a pipe, dug a channel and persuade the pool to empty itself. Our garden flooded, then over flooded and eventually a veritable river ran down the road. We ceased worrying about the human chain scenario and began to worry about the How many tankers will we need to fill it, and How much will they cost? Enter Wayne from 2 houses down, who saw the flood and concluded that we must have a major leak. He was uncertain whether to offer us life jackets or help with building an Ark, a project that could be trickey in an area with very few decent sized trees. As we stood watching euros flowing down the road in liquid form I bemoaned the inevitable expenditure of replacing said liquid euros. ‘You don’t need a tanker. Fill it from the tap.’ He advised. ‘Won’t Galasa be cross?’ I know that Galasa take a very dim view of those who in their eyes are profligate with water. ‘No, not if you ring them and tell them what you are doing.’ I rang them. ‘Fine.’ Said the girl in the office. Thus emboldened I attached the garden hose and turned on the tap. 51 hours later the pool was full of bright new totally transparent water! We haven’t had the bill yet!

He is castrated and loves children. My grandson just loved to walk this gentle little boy. Both are only small dogs under 10kgs. When thinking about a dog especially if you are elderly too please consider helping an older dog who deserves the chance to experience a loving home. So sad to think that a dog has reached this great age and can’t spend the next few months or years in a loving home. Britain’s brownfield beauty to be on display A conceptual garden at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show taking place between 4th & 9th July will highlight the surprising beauty of Britain’s brownfield, urban sites and the important role they have to play in creating the communities of tomorrow. ‘Brownfield – Metamorphosis’ by designer Martyn Wilson will take an abstract look at regeneration and demonstrate nature’s ability to succeed against the odds and transform an open space. Show visitors will be greeted by a series of monolithic steel structures that reference the manufacturing industries of the Industrial Age. On closer inspection, the steel appears twisted and torn – a nod to the decline of these industries. Through the rubble, the decay is being replaced by the processes of natural regeneration, and trees and vegetation are self-seeding. This natural transition provides opportunities for wildlife in the heart of urban areas. Sponsored by the UK’s leading regeneration specialist St. Modwen, the garden will feature urban art references by street artist Louis Masai on recycled hoardings. Swathes of grasses, ferns, herbaceous perennials and self-seeding annuals will soften the hard landscaping. The garden will form part of the new ‘gardens for a changing world’ category at the show. Martyn’s design has been Inspired by Landschaftpark, Duisburg-Nord in Germany, the High Line in New York and successful brownfield regeneration schemes in the UK. He said: “What interested me initially was the changing nature of urban landscapes which are so often are in state of flux. There’s the process of demolition and reconstruction but between the two, before building work starts, you often find nature moves back in and a new, temporary landscape is created. “My garden will recreate that moment in time, in a sculpted form, with nods to the past and also the future. We should see these city spaces as opportunities and, whilst appreciating their gritty beauty, look forward to welcoming the communities that will replace them.” St. Modwen is a fitting sponsor for the show garden. Currently spearheading the regeneration of New Covent Garden Market, London; the transformation of Longbridge, Birmingham and RAF Uxbridge in west London, the company is the UK expert in developing brownfield sites and amongst its portfolio also counts the magnificent Trentham Estate and Gardens in Stoke-on-Trent. Mark Allan, Chief Executive at St. Modwen, said: “The transformation and regeneration of urban sites not only goes a long way

to answering the UK’s existing housing crisis but has also brought back thousands of acres of brownfield land into the public sphere that was previously not accessible.” The steel structures on the garden are being designed by sculptor Simon Probyn and walls loaned by The Pot Company. The steel structure will sit on concrete footings being donated by Easymix Concrete. The surface of the garden will be mulched with aggregates recycled from brownfield sites and donated by Smiths of Bletchington. The plants are being sourced from renowned nursery and show garden supplier Hortus Loci. Martyn’s garden will also help raise the profile of cancer charity UCARE [Urology Cancer Research and Education] at the show with volunteers greeting visitors.

Keeping your carpet clean and fresh While regular carpet cleaning by professionals is necessary to ensure your carpet leads a long and healthy life, additional care and maintenance on your part can go a long way. Proper care and maintenance of your carpet will extend its useful life and preserve its appearance longer. Failure to maintain proper care will result in premature wear. Additionally, clean carpets contribute to a healthy indoor environment. 1. Over time, the resistance of stainresistant carpet wears down. For optimum performance, have a protector regularly applied after cleaning. 2. Stain-resistant does not mean stainproof. Be sure to act immediately to prevent spots and spills from causing permanent damage. 3. Your furniture collects everyday dirt and soil just like your carpet. For convenience, have both professionally cleaned at the same time. 4. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. Most of the wear of carpeting is caused by dirt. 5. Get at stains quickly, 99% of all stains can be removed by one cleaning agent or another if they are cleaned in the first few days. The longer a stain chemically reacts with the carpet the harder it will be to remove it. 6. Test carpet before scrubbing, extracting or spotting. All carpets are different. 7. Some carpets are very sensitive to acid type cleaners and will lose their colour quickly. Other carpet dyes are sensitive to harsh alkalis. 8. Do not overuse detergents, shampoos or spotters. Too much detergent will result in residual left in the carpet that even thorough vacuuming may not remove. 9. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. It is so important it deserves two recommendations. The normal hustle and bustle of eve-

Advertising pays with

ryday life can take its toll on your carpet. To keep yours looking its best between professional cleanings, vacuum heavy traffic areas two to three times a week, and the rest of your carpet once a week. Using indoor and outdoor mats at each entrance can reduce the amount of dirt tracked into your home. Be sure to clean these periodically to ensure their utmost effectiveness. Like all textiles, carpets will eventually show signs of wear. The wear creates an illusion of soiling, which often causes frustration and misunderstanding between the homeowners and carpet care experts. Even though a carpet has been cleaned, it does not mean the traffic areas will look clean. Traffic areas are those places where people are constantly walking or working. This situation creates what is called “Traffic Lane Grey”. While “Traffic Lane Grey” is an inevitable part of any carpet’s life, the process causing it can be slowed down. One way to prevent this is to rearrange the furniture in your home. By doing so, you will block old traffic areas and create new ones. By occasionally switching the flow of traffic you will distribute the effects of “Traffic Lane Gray”. You can also add area rugs to places where “Traffic Lane Gray” is unavoidable through rearranging furniture. The amount of traffic your carpet receives will determine how often vacuuming is necessary. Vacuuming a few times per week reduces the dirt that is likely to end up in the roots of your carpet.

UK interest rates on hold... for now

The Bank of England has voted to leave interest rates at 0.25% despite the Fed in the US raising rates the day before. It has also maintained government bond purchases at £435bn and corporate bond purchases at £10bn. The decision was not however unanimous with the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voting 5-3 in favour of the hold. Kristen Forbes, Ian McCafferty and Michael Saunders all voted to increase rates. Calum Bennie, savings

expert, Scottish Friendly, said: “The usual prescription to deal with a bad dose of inflation, even where it has been self-induced by overindulging in quantitative easing, is to raise interest rates. “However the decision to leave interest rates unchanged for fear of upsetting the struggling UK economy means that for the time being we have to resign ourselves to higher prices and wages that don’t keep pace. The longer this gap is left to widen the worse off people

on lower incomes are likely to become as their disposable income is squeezed further and their reliance on credit grows ever stronger.” City experts were not expecting a change in policy on Thursday but were keen to read the Bank’s views on the economy as inflation hit 2.9% this month. Although raising interest rates to cool inflation is seen by many as a practical strategy there are fears it may end up pressuring borrowers and eroding business confidence.

Pound stumbles on GE2017 result Staying on top of the latest news can help you time your currency transfers more effectively. Read our round up of the latest exchange rate shifts and find out what you should be looking out for in the weeks ahead.

Latest currency news

Once again the currency market has been rocked by UK political uncertainty, with the general election triggering notable shifts in the pound. In the two weeks surrounding the result of GE2017, the GBP/EUR exchange rate shifted by more than €0.026. The euro’s gains against the pound may have been more substantial if not for the European Central Bank’s (ECB) latest interest rate decision.

What’s been happening?

2017 is certainly shaping up to be as full of twists and turns as 2016. While election campaigning was suspended in the wake of horrific terror incidents in Manchester and London, the election was held on 8th June as planned. However, the outcome certainly wasn’t what Theresa May had planned when she called for the election in April. Initially the Conservatives were expected to walk the election, increasing their majority and strengthening Prime Minister Theresa May’s hand in Brexit negotiations in the process. But the tide of public opinion turned, and in the end May failed to secure the 326 seats needed to form a majority government. The result wasn’t the continuation of the status quo some investors were hoping for and the pound fell by around 2% as a result. Although the GBP losses were nowhere near as dramatic as the ones recorded in the wake of Brexit, the UK’s even more uncertain outlook did leave Sterling struggling despite Theresa May’s swift decision to form a coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party

(DUP). The euro did come under some pressure of its own however as the European Central Bank (ECB) cut inflation forecasts. The reduction in expectations for inflation reduced the odds of the ECB opting to reduce quantitative easing or increase interest rates in the near future, limiting the euro’s gains.

What do you need to look out for?

It will be interesting to see what happens to the pound as the dust settles over the next few weeks. Brexit negotiations are due to begin shortly, and Theresa May has asserted her commitment to continuing with the discussions as part of a minority government. If it appears that May has lost some of her sway in Brussels as a result of the election outcome, fears that the UK will emerge from Brexit with a bad deal could put the pound under further pressure. However, if the Federal Reserve interest rate decision sends the US dollar soaring (and the euro falling) the pound may be able to claw back some of its recent losses. As it stands the Fed is expected to increase interest rates, and USD could jump if the central bank indicates that borrowing costs will rise again in 2017. Spice up for a longer life Spicy food is crucial in fighting obesity, a new study claims. Researchers have already claimed that hot foods reduce the risk of early death from cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. Now new research has outlined why eating chili peppers can help to combat obesity by preventing gut inflammation and insulin resistance. Published in the American Society for Microbiology, scientists say capsaicin, which is found in chili peppers, has these special properties that can help reduce the rate of obesity in the Untied States. Scientists from Boston and China teamed up for the research and gave mice a high-fat diet along with capsaicin in the study. When the rodents were later tested, they were found to have a lower body weight gain. The researchers concluded that contributing factors to obesity were metabolic endotoxemia, gut microbial dysbiosis and chronic low-grade inflammation. Experts found that spicy food helped fight obesity through preventing these risk factors from occurring.

Capasicin is a compound found in peppers, giving them their notorious kick. All peppers have different amounts of capsaicin, which contributes to their overall spiciness. The hottest pepper is the ghost pepper, or the Bhut jolokia, which packs a punch so hot it has landed some in the emergency room. A 2015 study of nearly 500,000 middle-aged people found that those who ate a spicy meal every one or two days were 14% less likely to die than those who infrequently ate the food. The researchers, from Oxford University, Harvard School of Public Health in the US and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, found frequent consumption of spicy foods was particularly linked to a lower risk of death from cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. In America, 36% of adults are considered to be obese. In the UK, about 25% of adults are obese. Obesity has been linked to increasing the risk of getting cancer. Scientists at the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer found adding 4.3 inches to the waistline increases the risk of developing a group of obesity-linked cancers by 13%.Not all cancer is linked to fat and weight, but the researchers found the size of the waist was significantly tied to 10 cancers - those of the bowel, lower oesophagus, upper stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, womb, ovaries, kidneys and postmenopausal breasts. In addition to cancer, obesity can increase the risk of developing dementia. Brain scans revealed overweight and obese people with type 2 diabetes had more severe and progressive abnormalities in brain structure compared to normal-weight people. Grey matter in their brains (which contains most of the neural cells) was far thinner than in healthy individuals. This is a classic precursor for neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

When you want something non-alcoholic — but perhaps more interesting than elderflower cordial or cucumber water — here are ten suggestions to help keep you cool during the hottest days. Homemade Lemon and Limeade The great thing about making this classic cloudy summer special for yourself is that you can adjust the sweetness to your preference. Ingredients 4 lemons, 2 limes, 125 g caster sugar, water, few sprigs of mint, ice, lemon and lime slices Instructions 1. Wash the fruit. Pare the zest from 2 of the lemons and 1 lime taking care not to include too much white pith. Place in a saucepan with the caster sugar and 500ml water. 2. Heat gently stirring until the sugar dissolves, then remove from the heat.

Blackberry Ginger Mocktail Ginger, honey and lemon are a classic combination that work well made with either hot water as a spicy hot toddy, or simply left cold as in this recipe. This does call for the quick and easy choice of a can of ginger ale, but also uses blackberries for more flavour. Ingredients 5 blackberries, ½ thinly sliced lemon, handful of ice cubes,1 small can (150ml) ginger ale, 1 teaspoon of honey or Maple syrup. Instructions 1. Add the blackberries and lemon slices in a cup. Add on the ice cubes. Slowly, pour in the ginger ale. Add on a teaspoon of honey and give it a quick stir. 2. Serve immediately with a straw to crush the blackberries before drinking.

3. Squeeze the juice from the lemons and limes (you should have about 250ml) and stir into the pan. 4. Allow to infuse for at least 30 minutes. Remove the lemon zest with a draining spoon and discard. Pour the lemon and lime mixture into a large serving jug. Add a few sprigs of mint and top up with 750ml of cold water. 5. Chill well. Serve over ice with extra lemon and lime slices if desired.

Enjoy the best June has to offer June brings with it a fresh crop of refreshing fruit and vegetables to perfectly complement the season’s best fish and meat. The horn of plenty is well and truly filled in June when home produce is at its best and its most economical. Fish, seafoods, salads, vegetables and fruit are all of excellent quality, allowing for enjoyable cooking sessions and varied eating. It makes sense to use garden-fresh asparagus, peas, carrots, potatoes, cucumbers, radishes and a variety of salad leaves to full advantage by focusing the meal on them; for example, lightly cooked mixed fresh vegetables with a little herb butter and some warm crusty bread make an excellent supper or light lunch. For main meals, include several different vegetables or new potatoes and a salad with grilled fish or poached salmon steaks. Concentrate on serving vegetables

with light cooking juices or simple dressings rather than heavy sauces or thickened gravies. Although preserving food is traditionally an autumn activity, the availability of freezers in most homes, coupled with access to the increasingly popular pick-your-own farms, means that now is the time to start stocking up on the most successful freezer candidates, such as peas, beans and soft fruit. Plan ahead by checking the contents of the freezer, ensuring there is space for new produce, and pick only as much as you can process on the same day. The real culinary celebration of late June and early July is one of the simplest — strawberries and cream, with just a dusting of icing sugar, and watching Wimbledon at the same time is the perfect

excuse for this little indulgence. When there is a good crop of fruit, a jam-making session provides the perfect excuse for preparing a Sunday cream tea to sample the new preserve, complete with homebaked scones and clotted cream. Why not also try a pitcher of refreshing strawberry lemonade, jam tarts or an indulgent chili chocolate strawberry smoothie? Don’t fancy strawberry jam? Rhubarb, blackberries, and chilis also make delicious preserves.

Leisure Just like in Looney Tunes cartoons, an invisible Devil might be perched on one shoulder and an Angel on the other. Both are trying to persuade you to accept their point of view about an uncertain situation. Will ‘good’ triumph over ‘evil’? Much depends on how willing you are to accept that you’re not at risk of making as foolish a mistake as you might believe you are this week. Expect to be reassured about how fortuitous a situation really is.

For some time, you’ve been aware of how tedious or unsatisfactory a certain arrangement has been. You know what you’d do to bring an improvement if you had certain levels of power and influence. Yet, you’ve had to tolerate what has felt unacceptable through feeling powerless to change it. This week, your ruler, Venus, enters your sign. She’s coming to your rescue in more ways than one. New levels of comfort, closeness and optimism are all heading your way.

Enthusiasm sells. We’ve all seen situations where someone who hasn’t got a clue what someone else is really asking of them agrees to it only because of how enthusiastic the person asking is. Yet, there are times when asking in subtle or calm ways just doesn’t bring a desired result. This week, you might need to boost your enthusiasm levels in order to gain someone’s support or get them on the same page as you. It’s your enthusiasm that might instil a greater sense of urgency.

‘Sorry, the computer says ‘no’.’ We hear such words or the equivalent often in this day and age. Whereas we might have made progress by stating our case to a human, so many institutions enter specific data into a system and a program designed by a software engineer decides whether the answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’. This week, you might need to go beyond tedious systems and protocols to get an answer you need. Don’t be fobbed off with a lame, generic excuse.

We those who are brave and the sincere are rewarded far more than cautious and unimaginative. For you, this is a time to be strong, proud, daring, ambitious and, above all else, confident. Developments this week could – and should – encourage you to a courageous step towards the fulfilment of a dream. Be less concerned about what might go ‘wrong’ and focus instead on how much you’re going to do that’s ‘right’. The latter outweighs the former significantly.

‘If you want to fly with eagles, don’t surround yourself with turkeys.’ The saying implies we must selective about with whom we associate if we’re to be successful. However, we know if we removed anyone from our world that we believed to be a negative influence, we’d end up feeling lonely pretty quickly. This week, it becomes clear success in a particular area requires likemindedness between you and certain others. Don’t be too harsh with your selection process.

‘Start as you mean to go on.’ That’s helpful advice if we’re reassured we’re starting something in the right way. We often undertake plans blindly, believing we’re pursuing the right course of action until such time we discover otherwise. This week, the sky doesn’t imply you’re at risk of wasting time of effort but it is assisting you to embark upon a plan that needs only the right levels of motivation and inspiration. With these right, you can be certain you’re heading in the right direction.

You might struggle to find necessary levels of motivation or inspiration this week. There. Is it necessary for me to say more? You might think I’ve just given you a negative summary of the coming week but that only applies if you choose to accept that you won’t be able to summon motivation or inspiration in ways you need to. So, let’s see how able you are to prove me wrong. Given the celestial support you have to find both if you want them, you should succeed admirably.

Generally, when Sagittarians decide to pursue a particular plan that interests them to the point of intrigue or fascination, there are no limits to how deeply an Archer will dig to find out as much as possible about whatever-it-is. That’s one of your many admirable qualities. However, this week, your determination to find a particular answer or truth could cause you to dig a hole that will become deep surprisingly quickly. Be careful not to allow your keenness to become obsessive.

Rarely do we fast-forward films to the end because we accept how integral numerous scenes are to the big finale. With that in mind, consider the process you’re keen to accelerate – and why. Skipping over the important bits could mean you reach an ending that might not make sense. This week, as keen as you might be to move a process forward, recognize the essentialness of allowing it to play out, one scene at a time.

This week, guard against labouring a point. Be aware of the consequences of overstating your case. You might believe it’s necessary to provide more information rather than not enough in a particular way. It’s important to trust that ‘less is more’ where conveying yourself is concerned. In fact, your mission this week is about planting seeds of information in someone’s mind that need to be allowed to grow. Adopting a more subtle approach will ensure that happens.

A daunting quality attached to a particular plan should show signs of diminishing this week. Where you might have felt isolated or unsupported, you look set to discover otherwise. That’s why you can afford to step forward bravely and confidently. The time for weighing up options in a particular way is drawing to a close. If it isn’t already becoming clear how you have the one option you need and how it needs you to accept it, then it will do shortly.

Jo Cox – More in Common

Jo Cox’s murder in June 2016 shocked the world. In the aftermath of her tragic death her husband Brendan Cox urged us to remember Jo’s life and what she stood for and not the manner of her death.

In this moving and impassioned portrait of Jo - as daughter, mother, wife, sister, MP and activist - we see how much she gave and much more she had to give. It’s a wonderfully touching and very human portrait of an extraordinary woman, whose legacy will inspire others. “Jo Cox’s selfless service to others made the world a better place” - Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States “Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo’s friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo. Jo believed in a better world and fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.” - Brendan Cox, 16 June 2016 All Brendan Cox’s royalties will go to the Jo Cox Foundation.

War for the Planet of the Apes In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. “Apes. Together. Strong!” It’s been the mantra of ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) ever since he and his intelligence-boosted simian brethren started forming their own society in the ruins of a virus-ravaged human world. But now he faces the biggest challenge to his extended family’s safety and his own moral code in War For The Planet Of The Apes. Directed once again by Dawn’s Matt Reeves from a script he wrote with that movie’s scribe Mark Bomback, War finds Caesar dealing with tragedy and then hitting the road (and the beach, and the forest, and the mountains, and a military compound) as he searches for a new home for his clan. It won’t be an easy journey for Serkis’ troubled chimp, either physically or mentally. He’s just broken the core tenet of Ape culture (“ape shall not kill ape”), remember, by killing Koba in the previous outing. And as the human military presses in to take down the ape society, he confronts a new enemy: a commander known as The Colonel (Woody Harrelson), who has no qualms about ditching human ethics to save humanity. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet. War for the Planet of the Apes is released in the USA on July 14th.

OUR PICK OF THIS WEEK’S MUST-SEE FILM & TV FILM OF THE WEEK

Who Should We Let In? Ian Hislop on the First Great Immigration Row Thursday BBC2, 9pm to 10pm

Casino Royale (2006)

Saturday 24th June, ITV, 9pm to 11:50pm

James Bond is sent on his first mission as 007, a first also for Daniel Craig as the British agent and the 21st Bond movie to have been produced. This recent reboot of Bond is one of the best of the current crop, an entertaining spy adventure with plenty of action and grit. Bond takes on Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), banker to the worlds terrorists, in a high stakes game of poker where even winning might not save him or his colleague Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). Assisted by CIA agent Felix Leiter (Jeffery Wright) and of course M (Judi Dench) and without the humour of the previous films this origins story is a successful if sometimes violent addition to the 007 universe and it´s great to see him back in an Aston Martin.

ONE TO WATCH

Friday 23rd June, BBC2 8pm to 9pm You know it´s summer when the BBC´s coverage of the Glastonbury festival kicks off. This is the first show on BBC2 presented by Jo Whiley, Huw Stephens and Clara Amfo. There is a look at the highlights of the weekend ahead and news and performances from the famous stages during the first day of the festival. With coverage continuing on both BBC2 and BBC four throughout the weekend. Perhaps this year will see an event without the mud? However there is sure to be plenty of other suprises and great performances to come.

Ian Hislop presents a witty take on how Britain tackled mass immigration from the 1890´s onwards in the hope we might learn something from how it was handled. The Victorians for example had been proud of their open door immigration policies with one declaring Britain “the asylum of nations”. Late in the 19th century these views came up against oposition as the debate over who should or should not be let in commenced, triggered by rising numbers of immigrants.

Colour pick and mix at Volkswagen

Motoring

“We waited a long time for this kind of yellow.” Designer Astrid Göring carefully pushes a small bowl of the spice turmeric aside to make space for the so-called “mood board”. This display features different shades of yellow: among other things, a photo of glowing corn fields, the label from a French lemonade bottle and a fabric sample from some Italian curtains. “For our initial inspiration, we collect everything. We use these examples as a basis for the initial meeting with the paint supplier. Here we need to communicate our idea of the final hue: with a fine character. Or, with vivid sparkles as soon as the sun shines on it,” explains Astrid Göring. She and her colleague Susanne Gerken work at Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany in the “Colour and Trim” department. This is where new colours, trim and new kinds of cloth for the different Volkswagen models are conceptualised. Together with her team, Susanne Gerken is responsible for colour design in the B-segment and have a spectrum of around 80 different exterior colours to choose from for this complex task. Paint comes in solid variants, in metallic finishes and in mother of pearl effects which include classic Volkswagen colours like Tornado Red, Pure White and Oryx White. In addition to “Turmeric Yellow” (for the newly launched Golf 1.0 Litre TSI, among others), the latest trend colours are “Atlantic Blue Metallic” available for the Touran and “Bottle Green Metallic” on the Beetle and Beetle Cabrio. Gerken and Göring see all green hues – from Moss Green to Bottle Green and Viper Green – as new trend colours. The two colour experts only have a small scope for large experiments: Within five weeks after the initial meetings with the paint suppliers, they receive a 10 by 15 cm colour tile. They work with visualisations and 3D models in order to see whether the paint actually is suitable for the vehicle. The designers do not see the actual effect on the respective vehicle model until the end of the development process. In addition to the contemporary and durable character of the hues, the production process is an environmentally-friendly one; Volkswagen works almost exclusively with water-based paints. The painting process is checked and further developed continuously with the aim of reducing CO² emissions in order to reduce Volkswagen’s impact on the environment and also save energy and costs. In Volkswagen’s Uitenhage Plant, CO² emissions have dropped by 34% since 2010, due mainly to the environmentally friendly processes at the new Paint Shop. The new Paint Shop, which opened in 2006, has a maximum capacity of 750 units per day. It has 28 robots and 63 work stations on the line and the colour capacity includes four types of primer, 14 base coat colours and two types of clear coat.

All new Kia Rio

Following its world debut at the 2016 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, the all-new KIA Rio has made its South African debut. Now in its fourth generation, KIA’s popular B-segment contender features not only a progressive, stylish and award-winning exterior design, but also a redesigned interior with a thoroughly up-to-date ‘floating’ interface and a raft of new in-car technologies. The Rio is one of KIA’s best selling models globally, with particularly the outgoing third-generation model credited with establishing the Korean brand as a force to be reckoned with. Despite it nearing the end of its life cycle, the outgoing model still sold almost 450,000 units globally in 2016, accounting for 15% of KIA’s annual sales. In South Africa, the Rio has also been a consistent bestseller for KIA, along with the Picanto and Sportage making up the brand’s core trio of game changers. Following its launch in 2012, the Rio hatch was an immediate success and was consistently lauded by the public and motoring media alike. Not only did it come out tops in the Standard Bank People’s Wheels Awards, but it was also nominated as a finalist in the WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year competition – following in the footsteps of its 2006 predecessor. The new, fourth-generation Rio has big shoes to fill, but more than lives up to the challenge with its progressive design, class-leading practicality, more engaging ride and handling and greater safety credentials. Having already scooped up the prestigious international iF Product Design Award and Red Dot Design Award, it shows that the new Rio is perfectly ready and set to outrun ordinary. “As one of our best-selling models locally, the Rio is an important car for us.

The B-segment is a hotly contested area of the new car market, and the third-generation Rio has introduced more people to the KIA brand than ever before. It is vital that the new Rio continues the momentum for the brand,” says David Sieff, Marketing Director, KIA Motors South Africa. “The Rio’s attractive design, low running costs and practical nature have made the car a ‘gateway’ to the brand, an entry point into KIA ownership for hundreds of thousands of buyers around the world. It’s for these reasons that the outgoing model has sold in record numbers. The all-new Rio builds on these strengths and has been designed and engineered to meet the needs and desires of a wider range of buyers – it is now even more desirable thanks to a more enjoyable drive, a striking new design and improved safety.”

20th - 26th June 2017

The new KIA Rio is offered with revised versions of KIA’s familiar naturally aspirated 1.25-litre and 1.4-litre MPI (multi-point injection) petrol engines. The 1.25-litre engine produces peak power of 62 kW at 6,000 r/min and 120 Nm torque at 4,000 r/min. The 1.4-litre engine produces 74 kW at 6,300 r/min and 135 Nm torque at 4,200 r/min. Both engines apply power to the front wheels, either through a five-speed manual transmission (on the Rio 1.2) or a six-speed manual transmission (on the Rio 1.4-litre). A four-speed automatic transmission is available on 1.4-litre models.

Is Aiden O’Brien the greatest trainer of all-time? Scores of people in the world of horse racing - from owners to stable lads to jockeys to sponsors and even punters have, over the last month or so, asked this simple question: ‘Is Aiden O’Brien the greatest trainer of all-time?” I would say yes – certainly in my lifetime at least. These are the simple facts about the likeable Irishman who was born in County Wexford on 16 October 1969, was a teenager jockey and is currently based in Ballydoyle near Cashel in Tipperary… • Since he started training in his native Ireland in 1996, Aiden has saddled 284 top race/G1 winners – 89 in Ireland, 123 in Great Britain, 39 in France, 23 in the USA, three in Italy, three in the UAE, two in Canada and one in both Australia and Hong Kong. • He has sent out 28 GB Classic winners - six in the Derby, six in the Oakes, eight in the 2,000 Guineas, four in the 1,000 Guineas and four in the St Leger. • He’s also had 37 Irish Classics winners including seven in the 1,000 Guineas, 11 in the 2,000 Guineas, five in both the Oaks and St Leger and one in the Derby.

• Five-time GB champion flat race trainer and Ireland’s top man on ten occasions, he has won the Irish jumping title five times as well. • Horses trained by Aiden have won a record 55 races at Royal Ascot, with seven of them coming first in the Gold Cup. • As a trainer in GB and Ireland in 2016 Aiden gained £11.9 million in winnings and over the last 20 years the amount of prize money won by his horses has been in excess of £100 million.

Fact File

Aiden and his lovely wife Anne-Marie have four children - Joseph, Sarah, Anastasia and Donnacha – and all of them are jockeys. Joseph, a former apprentice at his father’s yard, rode his first winner shortly after his sixteenth birthday, on Johann Zoffany at Leopardstown in May 2009. And his first group winner followed on the same track in the Desmond Stakes in August 2010 on Beethoven, trained by his father. In 2012 Aiden and Joseph (then 19) became the first father-son/trainer-jockey combination to win the Epsom Derby, with Camelot. Aiden’s five other Derby winners have been Galileo (2001), High Chaparral (2002), Ruler of the World (2013), Australia (2014) and Wings of Eagles (2017). Camelot also won the 2,000 Guineas in 2012. Among the other top-line horses under Auden trainership we have Gleneagles (winner of both the Irish and English 2,000 Guineas), Hawk Wing, Istabraq, Minding (another 2,000 Guineas winner), Misty For Me, Mozart, Rip Van Winkle, Rock of Gibralter (owned by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and also a 2,000 Guineas champion), Treasure Beach andYeats Aiden, who is backed by the Coolmore Operation which is renowned for high priced yearling purchases at the Keeneland September Yearling Sales and elsewhere, is not related to the former Irish trainer from Cork, Vincent O’Brien, who died in 2009.
