Andalucian beaches given seal of approval
The waters of Andalucia have been approved by the Ministry of Health for the region. The report on the quality of beaches and waters of Andalucia was prepared in June to determine the state of the coast at the beginning of the summer season. The research looked at and monitored 351 sampling points in 261 bathing areas across seven central Andalucian swimming areas. Water samples were examined to determine if they met regulations on microbiological organisms, transparency, colour, residue as well as levels of pollution which may be considered a health threat. The analysis was conducted by the General Secretariat of Public Health and Consumption, and the state of the region has been given a satisfactory rating. In Almeria, a total of 93 samples were taken at 92 points
of interest across 77 bathing zones in 14 municipalities. In CĂĄdiz, 76 samples were taken across 54 bathing areas of 15 municipalities. Granada likewise had 41 in 34 swimming areas of 14 districts, and Huelva had 46 samples taken across 19 bathing areas of 9 towns. The report and findings will come as a relief to holidaymakers making their way to Spain. With temperatures set to soar across the region, and Almeria in particular, health officials warn beachgoers to wear the correct sunscreen and to remain hydrated at all times. Additionally, while the quality of the water and the beaches have been given government approval, holidaymakers are already warning of early high jellyfish numbers in waters across the province. The official guidance advises beachgoers to stay vigilant and to keep an eye on beach signs keeping visitors updated.

Always buy before you fly Currency and exchange is always swings and roundabouts. Some you win and some you gain. If you’re planning a trip back to the UK to escape the summer heat, then you’re certainly going to gain but if you have family and friends coming to join you in Spain, then it’s worth passing on the following advice to them. In a sentence, make sure they exchange their pounds before they get to the airport. The pound has been unstable ever since Brexit, and following the General Election, the currency has plummeted even further, falling below the euro at airports, according to reports from many travellers. Of course, exchanging currency at the airport is always going to be the most expensive/worst deal to be found, but the news that £1 won’t even get you €1 in the terminal should motivate people to plan ahead even more. The Independent newspaper has allegedly seen pho-
tographs of the 0.9848 exchange rate at Gatwick’s Moneycorp exchange centre, meaning that for £100 you will only get €98.48 in return. And if you’re travelling to the US then the situation isn’t much better, with £100 getting you a measly $110.24. Considering that a recent report by the Post Office found that prices in popular tourist resorts in Europe have risen sharply, holidays are going to be trickier for British tourists this summer. Simon Phillips from No 1 Currency said: “I don’t think we are going to see a flat, easy, forecastable sterlingeuro or sterling-dollar figure for some time yet,” he said. “Let’s face it, we have got Brexit negotiations to go through – in whatever form they take – and the markets don’t know what that means. Uncertainty is what breeds exchange-rate variation and there is a load of it.”

The Grenfell Tower victims deserve justice At the time of writing this, the death toll in the Grenfell Tower fire stands at 30. The sight of a burning building in London could well be an effigy for government incompetence at local and UK level. Who is responsible for the building? Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council in charge of housing, but fire regulations, including whether to have sprinklers or not, are under the purview of the UK Government. The reason for the rapid spread of the fire has yet to be determined. Cladding on the outside of the building and comparatively lax UK fire regulations are suspected to have exacerbated the blaze. Guidance was issued to residents to stay in their flat in the event of a fire, and this might also have added to the high death toll and the number of injuries. Scotland Yard is investigating, and Theresa May has ordered a full inquiry into what’s happened. It will likely take years, and in the meantime, all we have is dead bodies, 70 people missing and a smouldering building. The prime minister describes herself as a ‘one-nation’ Tory. The mantra warns of divisions between rich and poor and warns that if they occur, the country is doomed.
And now we have them - a mainly workingclass housing complex surrounded by affluent neighbourhoods burnt to the ground. Grenfell Action Group had been issuing warnings for years about the state of the building. It’s not politicising a tragedy to wonder if a building in central London would have ignored for so long. If arrests are to be made, then they should be made. The British public is now well and truly tired of any aristocratic or political privilege obfuscating justice. The scale of the tragedy in the capital of the UK demands accountability, and it demands justice. And there may not be one specific party to blame or one particular person. There is nothing wrong with decentralised government, but when everyone is finger pointing something has gone wrong with the system that's meant to serve citizens. In the aftermath of the Dunblane school massacre, the UK government passed legislation banning ownership of all handguns. Americans slaughter each other daily, and the system is defended or ignored, for the convenience of legislators hiding being a fractured system. The UK has no such excuse. What has happened is a tragedy and the public demand action, reform and justice.

Rare two-year parliament announced the parliamentary session usually runs for a year, from spring to spring. But the government has decided to double the length of the session to let lawmakers debate Britain’s approach to Brexit without interruption and the possible need to rush through legislation as the end of the parliamentary year approaches.
The British Government announced on Saturday that the UK parliament will implement a twoyear session. The main reason given for this rare development is to give more time to tackle the complexities of the consequences of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union (EU). Over the past few years,
Andrea Leadsom MP, the Leader of the House who is now responsible for the timetable of business to be debated in the Commons since the cabinet reshuffle, said that Brexit would require a lot of legislation, including a law to enshrine current EU rules into British law, known as the ‘Great Repeal Bill’. Mrs Leadsom, the former leadership contender, said: “Whilst our top priority right now is supporting the victims of the terrible tragedy at Grenfell Tower, we also need to look ahead by setting out a legislative programme that not only delivers a successful EU exit but also a domestic agenda which aims to tackle the social injustices in our country. “The UK will spend the next
two years preparing for our departure from the European Union in a way that best places us to realise the opportunities ahead and build a fairer society. This will require substantial amounts of legislation, beginning with the Great Repeal Bill. “We will build the broadest possible consensus for our Brexit plans, and that means giving Parliament the maximum amount of time to scrutinise these bills by holding a two-year session of Parliament. It will mean we can work together to deliver a successful Brexit deal and a strong social legislative programme that delivers justice and opportunity to everyone.” The government’s plan for the next parliament
will be outlined in the Queen’s speech tomorrow (Wednesday), and will include laws needed to deliver Brexit and new immigration legislation. Prime Minister Theresa May has stated on many occasions that Britain’s vote to leave the EU was in part a vote to reduce immigration. The last time the Queen’s Speech was dropped was in
2011 under the thencoalition government, with ministers insisting it would give Parliament more time to scrutinise the government’s heavy legislative agenda. Labour at the time accused the coalition of an “abuse of power” and said it was aimed solely at easing the passage of controversial legislation.
You think this is hot? It’s that time of the year when someone has turned up the heating an extra notch or two, although listen to the locals and they’ll tell you that the kind of temperatures being experienced across the Costa Blanca have come at least two weeks earlier than usual. The heatwave, which began across Spain last Thursday and was due to cool down ever so slightly yesterday saw reports of temperatures over 40ºC in the shade. However, it’s nowhere near the highest levels recorded. So far in June, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Spain for the month was on June 27th 1965 in Sevilla, when the gauge reached a staggering 45.2ºC. In a normal summer, the inland areas around Andalucia tend to be the hottest area of the country with some areas expected to be recording figures of 42ºC or more during the day and night temperatures at a stifling minimum of 25ºC. Elsewhere, thermometers are likely to see at least 35ºC and in some local areas, above 40ºC in the daytime, and are hardly unlikely to fall below 20ºC during the ‘coldest’ part of the night. The record so far for the longest-running heatwave in Spain was as recent as just two years ago, from June 27th to July 22nd 2015 – the most extensive for 40 years – with temperatures of over 40ºC in practically the whole of the country on July 6th, whilst night temperatures for the entire month never went below 20ºC and, in Andalucía, Murcia, the Balearics and the province of Alicante, did not once

drop below 25ºC. The most extensive heatwave in geographical terms was between August 8th and 11th 2012, where figures regularly stayed beyond 40ºC across 40 provinces. But it was summer 2003 which produced the highest number of deaths from heatstroke, with 141 people losing their lives. Between the years 2000 and 2009, a total of 1,312 people died every year from heatstroke – not just in summer, when 2003 was the worst – of which the majority were in Madrid, with 2,291 and Barcelona, with 1,205. So far in this 21st century, Spain has gone through 45 heatwaves, although it is rare to suffer just one per summer, so several more could be on the cards before 2017 is out. Stay cool...

Fears over the spinners They’re the latest toy craze that’s taken over school playgrounds and beyond: fidget spinners. But some are now being recalled from the shelves over safety fears. Hundreds of fidget spinners have been taken out of supermarkets and off market stalls due to warnings that their batteries could cause choking and internal bleeding if swallowed by young children. Trading standards officers from Bath and North East Somerset Council (B&NES) called for the move after finding they contain no safety information or minimum age. The council warned that some of the spinners featured LED lights with lithium-ion batteries, which could cause internal bleeding if ingested. Martin Veale, cabinet member for community services at B&NES, said: “Fidget spinners are new and currently very popular among young people. We want to ensure that, when using these devices, young people are safe. “Our Trading Standards officers have been looking at some of the spinners on sale and found them to have very small dangerous parts, so for public safety it’s only right that they be withdrawn from sale. Anyone buying a fidget spinner should purchase it from a reputable trader and ensure the safety warnings can be clearly seen on the packaging.”
EU investment in Almeria’s future The European Union has allocated 15 million euros to the city of Almeria to tackle the increasing challenges of urbanisation. The funds are part of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy that aims to develop ‘smart’ cities, promote a low carbon economy and to revitalise city centres including the protection of historical landmarks. The grant has been matched by 3,750,000 euros of municipal funds to match the 80% funding approved from the EU. Specific projects in Almeria include the protection of the Alcazaba, the Historic Quarter and the renovation of El Zapillo, Ciudad Jardín, El Tagarete and all the neighbourhoodson the maritime front.
Fidget spinners were originally designed to improve fine motor skills in children with autism and other special needs. Even though it’s not been scientifically proven, supposedly they help decrease stress and improve concentration and focus. If you’re planning to pick one up for your child or grandchild this summer when you see them on one of the market stalls, make sure you check for safety precautions and ensure
they know how to play with it safely. In a related development, an airport in Germany has taken a strong antifidget spinner stance by stopping 35 metric tons of the toys from entering the country in May. Customs officials at an airport in Frankfurt said children could potentially choke on pieces that might detach from the whirling contraptions, and that they planned to destroy the seized toys.

WhatsApp changes from end of June
Popular messaging app WhatsApp, in 2016 had said that it will stop its support of outdated devices. The Facebook-owned company had said that the app will stop running on many older smartphones including iPhone, Windows Phone, Nokia, Android and BlackBerry. Meanwhile, as a change of heart, WhatsApp had decided that it will be extending its support for BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS, Nokia Symbian and Nokia S40 until the end of June 2017. In December 2016 itself, many other old smartphones did, however, lose the support of the popular messaging application. But perhaps you do not have to worry as if specifications are taken into consideration then not too many devices will get affected, especially on iOS and Android. So if your device still runs the iOS 6, WhatsApp has already ended its support and it is the same case with Windows 7 mobiles. But now, by the end of this month, the app will stop working on BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry OS, Nokia Symbian and Nokia S40 too. For Android, the support for WhatsApp ends for devices which are running on Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 while for Windows it is devices with Windows 7 as their OS. When it comes to Apple devices the iPhone 3GS and iPhones still run on iOS 6. There are way too fewer phones with the Android specifications. According to the Google’s dashboard in November this year, only 0.1% smartphones still run on Android Froyo. So if you
have an Android IceCream Sandwich or the Android Jelly Bean then you need not worry as of now. Apple’s data from October this year, suggest that about 8 percent of smartphones run on iOS below the iOS9 version. WhatsApp in its previous blog had said that the support for the messaging app will end on many smartphones because they do not ‘offer the kind of capabilities’ needed by it to expand the features of the app. WhatsApp, with more than a billion monthly active users, has become the world’s most popular instant messaging app. These devices will not run WhatsApp anymore: BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 Nokia S40 Nokia Symbian S60 Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 Windows Phone 7 iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
According to some reports, WhatsApp is planning on coming up with a ‘recall’ feature on its app, where users can revoke messages even after sending them. WhatsApp might also roll out another feature which will enable users to change their numbers within the app itself. If the user changes the number, a notification can be sent to chosen or all contacts about the switch.
Summer safety and security in Spain Security is the second highest rated reason when choosing Spain as a tourist destination. Even the World Economic Forum indicates that the country is the second safest country among the ten leading global tourist destinations, behind only Switzerland.
In this regard, the Safe Tourism Plan, which has once again been set in motion for the 2017 season, helps the tourist sector to become more competitive, thanks to the special security measures implemented for the season, among other measures, with greater numbers of personnel in those places where this is necessary due to the mass influx of people. A key element of the Safe Tourism Plan is carried out by the different Foreign Tourist Assistance Services (Spanish acronym: SATE) distributed throughout the whole of Spain, both in the islands and on the mainland. Each SATE provides a service for tourists in their own language and offers them advice on both reporting offences and on how to carry out the necessary formalities, for example cancelling credit cards and relations with embassies. During last year’s campaign, 41,799 people were attended by the 24 SATEs located in the main tourist destinations in the country and 20,182 of-
fences were reported and processed. Enhanced language training of State law enforcement officers, as well as the incorporation of foreign police officers to attend to and convey trust to their compatriots in tourist areas were also crucial. Juan Ignacio Zoido, the Spanish Interior Minister, highlighted cooperation and exchanges as “fundamental elements both for prevention and for attending to victims of crime swiftly and effectively”. One of the new features of the Safe Tourism Plan for 2017 is the start-up of the first SATE in the Canary Islands - specifically in the municipality of Santiago del Teide - which will be staffed by Guardia Civil officers, information personnel and interpreters to attend to foreign tourists visiting the area. Another important new feature, in this case at a national level, is a new version of the AlertCops App (application for mobile phones that allows direct contact with the State law enforcement agencies to report a criminal offence either as the victim or as a witness), which incorporates the possibility of communicating via a chatroom with tourists in more than 100 languages. Furthermore, tourists can be redirected via this chatroom to points of interest, such as their nearest SATE office, medical services and police stations so that they can easily make their way to these facilities via navigation channels on their mobile phone. Another new feature is that alerts sent out by tourists can be accompanied by photos or videos to facilitate the handling of the situation by the police.
Lastly, Operation Summer will allow an increased police presence in areas with large numbers of tourists. Specifically, the number of reinforcements scheduled to be brought in for this summer campaign amounts to 2,639 National Police and Guardia Civil officers, which doubles the figure for last year, of 1,227, and is the highest number since 2011. These officers will mainly be distributed during July and August (and until the end of September in the Balearic Islands) between Madrid, Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Valencia, Murcia, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands. The Minister for Home Affairs underlined that “through all these initiatives and new features, we trust that all Spanish and foreign tourists will be able to enjoy their summer holidays in safety without having to worry about anything other than enjoying themselves and relaxing. We want to offer increased safety to tourists both during their stay in Spain and when travelling through the country”.

Mayday: Looking at the general election result In October of 1974, Harold Wilson called a general election and wildly hedged his bets. Wilson, who had a minority government after a hung result that same year, came to regret it: the exit poll prediction of a 132 seat majority turned out to be worth only three for the Labour prime minister. He resigned in 1976. In 2007, Gordon Brown committed the opposite sin - he didn’t hold a snap general election, lacked a mandate and was dogged by media fatigue with his oscillating. Flash forward to 2017 and Theresa May has committed electoral Hari Kari. The Prime Minister needlessly gambled the majority of David Cameron and egregiously mistook support for Brexit as support for her. The SNP committed the inverse error in 2012: they convinced themselves that their repeated political victories since 2007 meant winning the independence referendum was a shoe in. If there’s a key factor at the heart of this, it’s bad instincts. Mrs May was elected in disaster and has governed as such. She is a premier who exists as a parody of herself - a flustered grandmother at a bake sale who forgot something. She, even more so than Boris Johnson, is the bumbling wreck that has consecutively failed to think on her feet and present a manifesto or Brexit strategy beyond ‘strong and stable’. Had there been a candidate less contentious than Jeremy Corbyn, or had Labour’s majority been even greater with lesser Tory numbers, then en masse revolution would have occurred against May’s play to stay. Indeed, imagine Article 50 wasn’t yet triggered: May would
have been denounced after a year in office as possessing none of the Churchillian boorishness required to tackle a continental bloc of 27 powers who all want to limit the UK making a success of its grand exit. If there is evidence to be found at how pathetically small May and her decidedly un-conservative Conservatives are, then consider the band she’s now in the pocket of. The Democratic Unionist Party are climate change denying, antigay, anti-abortion incorrigibles. They offer nothing savoury beyond numbers to prop up a weak leader. If a change is to be made, it must be done so by looking hard facts in the eye with none of the rhetoric embellishments entwined with elections and seeing things as they really are.

Why Tim Farron had to go By Alastair Stewart Tim Farron was Liberal Democrat leader for just shy of two years. In that time, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that singled him out as a key player with policies and a rhetorical flourish that felt like a kick in the teeth for his opponents. And don’t fool yourself. Once, the Liberals frequently changed places with the Conservatives and were the de facto party of state in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their decline, and merging with the Labour rebels of the Social Democratic Party in the 80s, formed the third force of British politics. Under Paddy Ashdown and the late, great, Charles Kennedy in particular, they were the dreamer’s vision for what a real, true and honestly alternative government might look like. They were a treasured voice in the House of Commons until 2010 when Nick Clegg sold the party’s liberal and progressive soul in alliance with the Conservatives.
Even though there’s an argument to be made that Clegg did a constitutional service by settling the unfamiliar territory of a hung parliament, the party never recovered after a betrayal that allowed the austerity-driven Tories into power. But Farron, Clegg’s successor, was neither worthy of that mantle or Kennedy’s. His approach was tepid, his ideas unformed and he was subsumed in a Brexit debate that the Lib Dems - as the only unapologetically pro-EU, prosecond referendum party - should have triumphed in. What’s to be made of his resignation? Simply, the wrong man stepped down at the right time in the wrong way. Farron has been relentlessly dogged by the media for his Christian views and snidely targeted for refusing to say if he considered gay sex a sin. In his defence, neither Theresa May or Sadiq Khan, who both practice religion, have ever been subject to such a line of blunt sexual enquiry. The outrage if Khan, in particular as a Muslim, had been asked a similar question isn’t worth imagining because it could bean attempt to present him as a bigot on religious grounds. And that’s the point. Save for opportunism, the British
press and the public have seldom cared in the same way as the Americans about the religion of their leaders. What Farron got spectacularly wrong was handling a line of idiotic questioning from Cathy Newman on Channel 4 with the elusiveness of someone who felt so enticingly awkward as it had to be made a news story. His resignation, in which he blamed the irreconcilability of being a practising Christian with the demands of leader are a face to palm moment best forgotten in British politics.
When Churchill bribed Franco The Spanish Civil War is widely considered a prelude to the Second World War. All the central powers were peripherally involved, and Spain owed a debt of $212 million for supplies given by Nazi Germany to General Francisco Franco’s Nationalists. As such, there was a fear that Spain might come out on the side of Germany or Italy. In June 1940, the Spanish Ambassador to Berlin explicitly said that Franco was “ready under certain conditions to enter the war on the side of Germany and Italy.” By historically divine coincidence, Winston Churchill became Prime Minister on the same day Adolf Hitler attacked the Low Countries of Europe on May 10, 1940. British officer Alan Hillgarth came up with the plan to bribe key Spanish military, political and business figures to ensure Spanish neutrality. The British ambassador in Madrid,Sir Samuel Hoare, warned that the money had to be paid to stave off support for Germany. In June 1940, he demanded $1m for the effort: “I personally urge authority be granted without delay, and that if you have doubts, the prime minister be consulted.” Although Britain was cash strapped for the war effort, Churchill authorised MI6 to send millions of pounds via New York. He also persuaded Spanish banker Juan March to act
as a secret agent. March orchestrated payments to Franco’s generals, and even his brother, on the understanding they would persuade him not to side with Hitler. When the Nazi leader and Franco met in October at the Hendaye train station, Hitler was annoyed by Franco’s demands for joining Germany in the war, famously saying he would “rather have three or four teeth pulled” than meet him again. Spain, however, remained a real threat, particularly after the Battle of the Britain stopped the Nazis, and they became increasingly desperate for support. Hoare claimed that British money lead to the ar-
rest of those planning to convince Franco to join the war effort in aid of Germany. And while Spain never formally did, Franco did pass information over to the Nazis and allowed Spanish volunteers to join the Nazis on the proviso they would only fight Soviet forces. The story is documented by Pere Ferrer in his book Juan March: The Most Mysterious Man in the World and Ángel Viñas, author of Bribes: How Churchill and March Bought Franco’s Generals. While the machinations of El Caudillo, Der Führer and Il Duce have all faded into dust, Churchill’s secret’s continue to reveal themselves 77 years after he saved civilisation.

Stay cool at night However long people have lived in hot countries such as Spain, the only guaranteed way to get a good night’s sleep for many is to keep the air-conditioning going throughout the night – perhaps on a timer. But what if you haven’t got an air-con unit or you simply want to save money by not using your own system for so many hours? Try the following tips for a more comfortable night without the uncomfortable energy bills: 1. Be creative. Invent methods that will prevent hot air from entering the room. For example, place a fan directed towards the windows to prevent the heat from entering; or place a bowl filled with ice or very cold water in front of the blades to make the air cooler. A wet sheet hanging from the windows also helps. 2. Apply compresses. Dip compresses in cold – but not icy - water on parts of the body most sensitive to heat, such as the neck, elbows, ankles and the backs of the knees. The contact with the cool water has a refrigerating effect that triggers a narrowing of the blood vessels, heating up the skin. In turn, the heat cools you down as a result of the difference in the surrounding temperature. 3. Sleep alone. It really is the best way to stay cool in

bed. Sleeping alongside someone else increases your body temperature and makes the bedclothes cling. 4. Shower in warm water. This is both a method to reduce your body temperature and a good tip for feeling fresh and clean before going to bed. Warm / tepid water is better than cold as even though the shock of a cold shower produces an instant feeling of coolness, it reactivates your body and energy consumption, which makes you feel the heat more quickly afterwards than if you had showed in warm water, If you don’t fancy a full shower before turning in, simply wash your feet to keep them cool as heat enters the body through them. 5. Eat more salad. Eating a big, three-course meal on a hot summer night forces the body to produce more heat to digest the food. Think of eating more salads, yoghurts and even the famous Spanish gazpacho instead. It’s not as if the really hot spells last for too long and you have the rest of the year to enjoy the stews and roast dinners! Also, drink lots of water. A minimum of 1 ½ litres a day is recommended. 6. Turn off all electrical appliances. Even in stand-by mode, all appliances are using energy and emit heat. According to the International Energy
Agency, stand-by still consumes between 5% and 10% of the usual intake of the device in use). Also, use energy saving light bulbs that also create less heat when they do have to be on in rooms during the summer nights. 7. A quick air-con blast. A final tried and tested method for a good sleep, if you have air-conditioning and don’t want to leave it on all night, is to open the bedroom door and allow the effects of the air-con in the living room to cool other rooms down. Also, for a few minutes before going to bed, stand in front of your air-con unit before switching it off. This cools the body down before going in to the equally cool bedroom.
banks exchange rate (Dick Turpin is alive and well), No Thank You! There must be better ways. How about pre-paid Debit cards? Generally, they are ‘loaded’ with UK pounds and there is a 2% loss when converting to euros (as opposed to the 0.5% with a currency exchange company – AVOID exchange bureaux as they are worse than the banks). Most prepaid cards have charges attached once you get into the small print. BUT NOT ALL! Someone recommended that I look at a particular card that can be loaded with pounds, euros or dollars, it uses the exchange rate that banks use between each other without charges, you can get instant cash conversion between the currencies (if you are a wanna be money mogul) at these rates and use the card in any of 90 countries. It all starts with an app on your phone. It took longer to download (less then 90 seconds) than it did to register for the service. This app does everything described above and much more. The card is a separate one off purchase (for me 6€) from the 20€ I put on the card (start small and when your confidence grows, invest more!) It should be here before you read this article and I will be loading it with English currency and using it to pay my electric, basura and all the other bills! This is to be continued as I test it further and then I might tell you the name of the app. Until next week, enjoy the sun and Spanish life style.

Clegg gives support for cannabis regulation Shortly before losing his seat at the recent General Election, former leader of the Liberal Democrats and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg wrote an article for the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in which he outlines why he believes a legal and regulated cannabis market would show marked improvements in public health. Just as alcohol prohibition in 1920s America drove users towards increasingly potent and dangerous drinks, “the illicit cannabis industry has responded to criminal enforcement by developing products that maximise profit, with no consideration for the health of its customers,” Clegg writes. “Skunk” is a direct result of prohibition, he argues. New cultivation methods “have pushed up potency over the past 20 years” and the market is “saturated by a highstrength product associated with severe mental health problems.” Skunk is now sold without any effective restriction to about two million UK consumers a year, including large numbers of children, he says. Yet politicians “expect us to believe that the criminal law will prevail, despite no evidence that this approach has ever worked anywhere in the world.” This is irresponsible and unimaginative, he argues. Unlike the Conservative and Labour election manifestos, which made no mention of the cannabis problem, the Liberal Democrat manifesto included a clear commitment to regulate the market. Legalising and regulating the milder forms of the drug “would end the lottery where cannabis users have no idea what they are buying,” he explains, while sales from licensed outlets would be taxed, “capturing £1bn a year which is currently lost to organised crime.” The former MP concludes: “We are not arguing to ‘liberalise’ drug laws - cannabis of unknown content and potency is already available to any adults and children who want it. This is a debate about the merits of regulation versus a system without any control. The opponents of regulation should ask themselves this: what other public health problem do we contract out entirely to organised criminals?”

Child poverty still a concern Nearly 2.5 million children under the age of 18, accounting for 29.7% of the entire child population nationwide, remain at risk of poverty. This is according to a formal response from the Partido Popular (PP) government of President Mariano Rajoy to a parliamentary question posed by the Socialist party (PSOE) legislative group in Spain’s Congress of Deputies. While representing a slight year-on-year decrease that breaks with a six-year upward trend since 2011, the level of child poverty in the country is still of concern to political parties and non-government organizations campaigning in defence of children’s rights and against poverty that severely impacts Spain’s youth population. At the same time, one organisation
working to direct more attention to the problem of child poverty in Spain says that this summer some 580,000 children between the ages of six and 13 will be left at home alone. The reason says NGO Educo, is that the children’s parents are among the 2.5 million working poor in Spain who cannot afford to send their children to summer school or summer camp programs or pay for childcare services while they are away at work. And, despite the work of many community food-banks across Spain, which serve more than 1.5 million people including some 350,000 children, it is estimated that one in three Spanish children remain unable to regularly access the consumption of milk and protein sources essential to their growth and physical and mental health.

Why May is wrong about human rights
By Alastair Stewart In the aftermath of the London terror attacks, Theresa May said she would change human rights laws if they “get in the way” of tackling terror in the UK. The problem with this is three-fold. Firstly, British security services already possess extensive anti-terrorism powers that have been denounced by Amnesty International as among “the most draconian” in Europe. Secondly, the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) has nothing to do with the EU. It came into effect in 1953 (ironically, Conservative MP and Scotsman Sir David
Maxwell-Fyfe was instrumental in the drafting). The Council of Europe is separate from the EU and was established in 1949. The best-known body of the Council is the European Court of Human Rights, which enforces the Convention. To make the Convention practical, and to save people the cost of going to the ECtHR, the Labour Party produced the Human Rights Act 1998. To do away with human rights, or repeal them, would require the same majority of which May now scarcely enjoys from a party now gunning for her. David Cameron only ever flirted with the idea because he wanted to appease Eurosceptics by introducing a ‘British Bill of Rights (ignoring that the country invented Magna Carta and the limits to absolute monarchy). May wanted to scrap it altogether in 2011 when she was Home Secretary. The Act protects fundamental freedoms, including the right to a fair trial which is what May finds distasteful about terror suspects. Thirdly, what would the absence of the Human Rights Act look like? Consider Spain, which only became a signatory to the Convention in 1977. The Franco regime engaged in hundreds of thousands of acts of barbarism including torture, medical experimentation, political repression and death squads. The British tortured, too. It’s been an integral component throughout our history, including as recently in Kenya in the 1950s, the Troubles in Northern Ireland and into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Worse, still, the UK is permitted under Article 15 to ‘derogate’, or depart from, parts of the Convention in a “time of emergency”, such as events “threatening the life of the nation.” Look closer, and you see what happens when the state gets security obsessed. Democratic traditions, as in Spain and Germany, can easily be overturned when one life is considered expendable. When you pull on one thread, you should consider the larger tapestry. Human rights are an instrument for the protection of people, and removing them from Britain risks citizens at both home and abroad.

Pound stumbles on GE2017 result Staying on top of the latest news can help you time your currency transfers more effectively. Read our round up of the latest exchange rate shifts and find out what you should be looking out for in the weeks ahead.
Latest currency news
Once again the currency market has been rocked by UK political uncertainty, with the general election triggering notable shifts in the pound. In the two weeks surrounding the result of GE2017, the GBP/EUR exchange rate shifted by more than €0.026. The euro’s gains against the pound may have been more substantial if not for the European Central Bank’s (ECB) latest interest rate decision.
What’s been happening?
2017 is certainly shaping up to be as full of twists and turns as 2016. While election campaigning was suspended in the wake of horrific terror incidents in Manchester and London, the election was held on 8th June as planned. However, the outcome certainly wasn’t what Theresa May had planned when she called for the election in April. Initially the Conservatives were expected to walk the election, increasing their majority and strengthening Prime Minister Theresa May’s hand in Brexit negotiations in the process. But the tide of public opinion turned, and in the end May failed to secure the 326 seats needed to form a majority government. The result wasn’t the continuation of the status quo some investors were hoping for and the pound fell by around 2% as a result. Although the GBP losses were nowhere near as dramatic as the ones recorded in the wake of Brexit, the UK’s even more uncertain outlook did leave Sterling struggling despite Theresa May’s swift decision to form a coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party
(DUP). The euro did come under some pressure of its own however as the European Central Bank (ECB) cut inflation forecasts. The reduction in expectations for inflation reduced the odds of the ECB opting to reduce quantitative easing or increase interest rates in the near future, limiting the euro’s gains.
What do you need to look out for?
It will be interesting to see what happens to the pound as the dust settles over the next few weeks. Brexit negotiations are due to begin shortly, and Theresa May has asserted her commitment to continuing with the discussions as part of a minority government. If it appears that May has lost some of her sway in Brussels as a result of the election outcome, fears that the UK will emerge from Brexit with a bad deal could put the pound under further pressure. However, if the Federal Reserve interest rate decision sends the US dollar soaring (and the euro falling) the pound may be able to claw back some of its recent losses. As it stands the Fed is expected to increase interest rates, and USD could jump if the central bank indicates that borrowing costs will rise again in 2017. From MoD to modern for £350 million Originally announced back in March of last year year, more details on the formal plans for a £1 billion transformation of an iconic UK Government base into a hotel have been revealed. The site has been granted planning permission for a multi-purpose development including 125 rooms, 88 private residences, restaurants and other amenities. Completion is expected in just over three years. The building – close to 10 Downing Street, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey – has also served as an office to former chancellor David Lloyd George and senior British Army officer Lord Kitchener. The enormous Victorian built Old War Office in Whitehall in London, where Sir Winston Churchill helped mastermind victory in World War II over Germany, will include 125 bedrooms, 88 flats, a ballroom able to take 600 guests, a bar on the rooftop with some of the best views in the capital, an 82 foot swimming pool, a spa and a wine cellar. Guests are literally across the road from Downing Street, while the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace are all be just a short walk away. The sale of the Old War Office to the Hinduja Group in partnership with OHL Developments, whose main shareholder is Grupo Villar Mir, is one of the largest private Spanish industrial groups. The 580,000 sq ft property, marketed as 57 Whitehall, was sold on a long lease arrangement to the joint venture for in excess of £350 million following a competitive marketing process. Working collaboratively with the purchasers the building will be sympathetically restored, redeveloped and re-imagined as a high quality hotel and residential apartments. The seven-story building, which was constructed in 1906 and bombed eight times in the Blitz, has played host to numerous famous figures including Churchill, Lord Kitchener, David Lloyd-George and John Profumo. In more recent years, it’s featured in four James Bond films - Octopussy, A View to a Kill, Licence to Kill and Skyfall - portrayed as the MI6 headquarters, where M’s office was located. EPR Architects describe The Old War Office as of “unquestionable historic significance, constructed at a time the British Empire was at its zenith”. They are calling it a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to secure the heritage of the building and grant it a new life for future generations. It is made up of 25 million bricks and 30,000 tonnes of Portland and York stone. There are 1,000 rooms and twoand-a-half miles of corridors, many of which are ten-feet wide. Gopichand Hinduja, the Hinduja Group’s co-chairman said: “Our new partnership with Raffles Hotels and Resorts is a significant milestone in our vision to transform the Old War Office into London’s finest luxury destination. Raffles brings a unique understanding of British heritage and tradition that will help revive this great British landmark.” It is estimated the sale will generate a saving for the Ministry of Defence of around £8-10 million per year in running costs.

Dublin looking for Brexit benefits Irish fund managers are already making plans to manage the fall-out from a hard Brexit, according to new research, with 83% of respondents saying there have been active discussions in their organisation about how to manage this. Almost two-thirds (63%) of fund managers surveyed say their organisation has discussed the option of moving UK operations to Dublin after Brexit, while 60% say that a hard Brexit could be disastrous for the Irish economy. The study, conducted by online board portal provider eShare, with delegates at the recent Annual Global Funds Conference 2017 in Dublin, also revealed that more than half of respondents (51%) believe Brexit to be the single biggest issue the Irish funds sector is currently facing. “While the impact of Brexit on the Irish funds sector is of course unknown at this stage, it is clear that Irish fund managers are taking the prospect of a hard Brexit very seriously indeed,” said Alister Esam, CEO, eShare. “The fact so many are considering moving their HQ operations to Dublin highlights the uncertainty in the market and there are potentially some very tough decisions to be made. That’s why it is so important for transparency into that decision making over the next 18 months, so clients and stakeholders can see why decisions were made and how they were arrived at.”
Around three-quarters of respondents (74%) say their organisation has already begun setting aside resources to deal with the risks ahead from Brexit, with the UK set to leave the EU on 29 March 2019. The complexity over Brexit and the respective negotiating positions of both parties may become more magnified over the coming months, following the recent UK General Election. The ruling Conservative Party failed to gain an overall majority and are in discussions over an informal arrangement with the Democratic Unionist Party, which cites a soft border with Ireland as a central part of its Brexit policy. Despite the widespread uncertainty over the impact of Brexit on the funds sector, 80% of respondents say the funds market is generally buoyant. “The recent UK General Election and whatever arrangement between the DUP and Conservative Party emerges has only served to heighten the uncertainty over Brexit amongst Ireland’s financial community,” continued Alister Esam, eShare. “As the UK government heads into formal discussions with the EU a lot is at stake and senior teams within Irish fund managers have much to consider. But Dublin is becoming a financial centre of excellence to be reckoned with across Europe, and the funds sector can look forward to the future with confidence.”

Home buyer activity in the UK down...and up According to data recently released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), home buyer activity in April in the UK was down on March but up on a year ago. On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, lending in April showed home buyers borrowed £9.6bn, down 14% on March but up 19% on April 2016. This came to 51,200 loans, down 16% on March but up 9% on April 2016. Within this, first-time buyers borrowed £4.1bn, down 16% on March but up 8% on April 2016. They took out 25,400 loans, down 18% month-onmonth but up 2% year-onyear. Meanwhile, home movers borrowed £5.5bn, down 11% on March but up 28%
year-on-year. This equated to 25,700 loans, down 15% month-on-month but up 17% compared to April 2016. Home-owner remortgage activity was down 16% by value and 18% by volume on March. Compared to a year ago, remortgage lending was down 15% by value and 16% by volume. Gross buy-to-let saw month-on-month decreases, down 17% by value and 16% by volume. Compared to April 2016, the number of loans increased 1% and the amount borrowed remained unchanged. Director General of the CML, Paul Smee, commented: “April comparisons are distorted by the weakness last year following the stamp duty

changes, and the normal seasonal lending surge in March. But the seasonallyadjusted picture shows lending relatively unchanged month-on-month across all lending segments. “Heading into the summer months, we expect the market to remain slightly lopsided. Buy-to-let and home movers may well remain subdued, as they have been for the last six months. But both first-time buyer and remortgage lending should maintain momentum on the coattails of the attractive deals available.” On a seasonally adjusted period, first-time buyers and home movers went up by value and remained relatively unchanged by volume compared to March. Buy-to-let and remortgage activity also remained relatively unchanged in April from March. Full seasonally and non-seasonally adjusted data can be downloaded at the bottom of the page. The proportion of household income used to service capital and interest rates continued to be near historic lows in April for both first-time buyers and home movers at 17.3% and 17.5% respectively. Affordability metrics for first-time buyers saw the typical loan size increase from £133,500 in March to £136,500 in April. The average household income increased to £40,700 from £40,000. This meant the income multiple went from 3.53 to 3.57. The average amount borrowed by home movers in the UK increased to £176,500 from £172,400 the previous month, while the average home mover household income increased month-on-month from £54,100 to £55,200. The income multiple for the average home mover went up to 3.35 from 3.34. The Council of Mortgage Lenders’ members are banks, building societies and other lenders who together undertake around 97% of all residential mortgage lending in the UK. There are 11.1 million mortgages in the UK, with loans worth over £1.3 trillion.

UK rental costs tumbling The heat has been coming out of the rental market, with UK rents tumbling for the first time since 2009.
The average rent on a new tenancy, beginning in May, was £901 – that’s 0.3% lower than in the same month of 2016, according to new data from HomeLet, a tenant referencing service. In London, rents were 3% lower than this time last year. This is the first time in eight years the HomeLet rental index has reported a fall in rents on an annualised basis. Chief executive officer of HomeLet, Martin Totty said that the company’s rental data, “suggests landlords are facing a difficult balancing act between ensuring rents are affordable for tenants in a low wage growth environment, while covering their own rising costs”. The slowdown in the rental sector mirrors a similar picture elsewhere in the property sector, with Nationwide Building Society revealing in June that house prices had fallen in each of the past three months. Aside from London, rents in four other regions also saw rents on new tenancies slide during May. The north-east of England, the south-east, Yorkshire and Humberside, and Scotland all registered decreases ranging from 2.3% to 0.6%. In the capital, the slowdown saw average rents drop from £1,572 a month in July 2016, to £1,502 in May. HomeLet said that last month’s 3% an-
nualised fall was the ‘steepest decline’ reported in London since 2009.Above: A-two-bedroom flat for rent in north London’s Finsbury Park for £1,712 per calendar month After the 2008 and 2009 credit crunch a growing shortage of stock lead to ‘bidding wars’ in the rental market between prospective tenants. This was most prevalent in London, where the mismatch between supply and demand was most stark. Up until as recently as a year ago Britain’s property market was still being described by commentators as ‘overheated’. But the tables are starting to turn, according to HomeLet. An increasing amount of red tape for landlords such as Right to Rent, and squeezes on the tax reliefs available, mean landlords are weighing up tenant affordability considerations ‘very seriously’. Martin Totty said, “Any constraint to the supply of rental properties, because landlords are unable to achieve the reasonable returns they require, cannot be in the long-term best interests of tenants, especially if - as we’ve heard from the main political parties - the UK’s population continues to grow.” Rents across the UK fell by 0.3% in May, the first such fall since December 2009, with the average monthly rent now standing at £901. In London rent prices fell by 3% in the 12 months since May 2016, the most substantial fall in eight years.

A conceptual garden at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show taking place between 4th & 9th July will highlight the surprising beauty of Britain’s brownfield, urban sites and the important role they have to play in creating the communities of tomorrow. ‘Brownfield – Metamorphosis’ by designer Martyn Wilson will take an abstract look at regeneration and demonstrate nature’s ability to succeed against the odds and transform an open space. Show visitors will be greeted by a series of monolithic steel structures that reference the manufacturing industries of the Industrial Age. On closer inspection, the steel appears twisted and torn – a nod to the decline of these industries. Swathes of grasses, ferns, herbaceous perennials and self-seeding annuals will soften the hard landscaping. The garden will form part of the new ‘gardens for a changing world’ category at the show. Martyn’s design has been Inspired by Landschaftpark, Duisburg-Nord in Germany, the High Line in New York and successful brownfield regeneration schemes in the UK. He said: “What interested me initially was the changing nature of urban landscapes which are so often are in state of flux. There’s the process of demolition and reconstruction but between the two, before building work starts, you often find nature moves back in and a new, temporary landscape is created. “My garden will recreate that moment in time, in a sculpted form, with nods to the past and also the future. We should see these city spaces as opportunities and, whilst appreciating their gritty beauty, look forward to welcoming the communities that will replace them.” St. Modwen is a fitting sponsor for the show garden. Currently spearheading the regeneration of New Covent Garden Market, London; the transformation of Longbridge, Birmingham and RAF Uxbridge in west London, the company is the UK expert in developing brownfield sites and amongst its portfolio also counts the magnificent Trentham Estate and Gardens in Stoke-on-Trent. Mark Allan, Chief Executive at St. Modwen, said: “The transformation and regeneration of urban sites not only goes a long way to answering the UK’s existing housing crisis but has also brought back thousands of acres of brownfield land into the public sphere that was previously not accessible.” The steel structures on the garden are being designed by sculptor Simon Probyn and walls loaned by The Pot Company. The steel structure will sit on concrete footings being donated by Easymix Concrete. The surface of the garden will be mulched with aggregates recycled from brownfield sites and donated by Smiths of Bletchington. The plants are being sourced from renowned nursery and show garden supplier Hortus Loci. Martyn’s garden will also help raise the profile of cancer charity UCARE [Urology Cancer Research and Education] at the show with volunteers greeting visitors.

Keeping your carpet clean and fresh While regular carpet cleaning by professionals is necessary to ensure your carpet leads a long and healthy life, additional care and maintenance on your part can go a long way. Proper care and maintenance of your carpet will extend its useful life and preserve its appearance longer. Failure to maintain proper care will result in premature wear. Additionally, clean carpets contribute to a healthy indoor environment. 1. Over time, the resistance of stain-resistant carpet wears down. For optimum performance, have a protector regularly applied after cleaning. 2. Stain-resistant does not mean stain-proof. Be sure to act immediately to prevent spots and spills from causing permanent damage. 3. Your furniture collects everyday dirt and soil just like your carpet. For convenience, have both professionally cleaned at the same time. 4. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. Most of the wear of carpeting is caused by dirt. 5. Get at stains quickly, 99% of all stains can be removed by one cleaning agent or another if they are cleaned in the first few days. The longer a stain chemically reacts with the carpet the harder it will be to remove it. 6. Test carpet before scrubbing, extracting or spotting. All carpets are different.

7. Some carpets are very sensitive to acid type cleaners and will lose their colour quickly. Other carpet dyes are sensitive to harsh alkalis. 8. Do not overuse detergents, shampoos or spotters. Too much detergent will result in residual left in the carpet that even thorough vacuuming may not remove. 9. Vacuum frequently and thoroughly. It is so important it deserves two recommendations. The normal hustle and bustle of everyday life can take its toll on your carpet. To keep yours looking its best between professional cleanings, vacuum heavy traffic areas two to three times a week, and the rest of your carpet once a week. Using indoor and outdoor mats at each entrance can reduce the amount of dirt tracked into your home.
Be sure to clean these periodically to ensure their utmost effectiveness. Like all textiles, carpets will eventually show signs of wear. The wear creates an illusion of soiling, which often causes frustration and misunderstanding between the homeowners and carpet care experts. Even though a carpet has been cleaned, it does not mean the traffic areas will look clean. Traffic areas are those places where people are constantly walking or working. This situation creates what is called “Traffic Lane Grey”. While “Traffic Lane Grey” is an inevitable part of any carpet’s life, the process causing it can be slowed down. One way to prevent this is to rearrange the furniture in your home. By doing so, you will block old traffic areas and create new ones. By occasionally switching the flow of traffic you will distribute the effects of “Traffic Lane Gray”. You can also add area rugs to places where “Traffic Lane Gray” is unavoidable through rearranging furniture. The amount of traffic your carpet receives will determine how often vacuuming is necessary. Vacuuming a few times per week reduces the dirt that is likely to end up in the roots of your carpet.

Whistle for it The problem with the insane world we now live in is we can’t tell if technical innovation is an elaborate prank or not. There was much hilarity in the office when a ‘Voice Activated’ notice was pinned to the new toaster. When computers entered our lives I was disinterested and frankly felt challenged. Then something happened that changed my world. My wife, who was more a geek than I am, explained about webcams. “Look, these are actual pictures of San Francisco being taken at this moment.” My face must have been a picture too: “You’re telling me that if San Francisco was hit by an earthquake right now we would see it?”
It never rains but
By Feature writer Sandy Shore
She assured me that we would and for me the revelation can only be described as seismic. We have a right to be sceptical as one simply cannot predict what the next invention will be let alone question it. When in my twenties I decided my clapped out kettle needed replacing. Calling in at the shop that sold electrical appliances I was shown the options. Two kettles in particular caught my attention but I just couldn’t decide which was best. There being a price difference I asked the shop’s owner why this was so when the two kettles appeared similar. I kid you not, that madam, without blinking an eyelid or a curl of her lip, explained that the more expensive kettle rather than shrieking whistled God Save the Queen. I am embarrassed to tell you: I looked at the shopkeeper and asked her if she was pulling my leg. With deadpan face that woman repeated her lie: “yes, when it boils it whistles the national anthem.” “That is so interesting,” I said as I got my money out and paid for the damned thing. On reaching my apartment I put water in my brand new patriotic kettle and I plugged it in. I know a watched kettle never boils but this one did. But, when it did so the kettle’s whistle was the same as that of any other whistling kettle. There was little point in my standing to attention or saluting the appliance. My new kettle was no more capable of whistling God Save the Queen than I was of setting fire to an orphanage.
This occasioned a dilemma for me: Do I return the kettle to the shop and seek a refund or do I grin and bear it. I took the latter option and on this occasion it was the better option.
Macs moonwalk By Jos Biggs
It never rains but it pours – how true! We go months with never a drop, then it buckets down!
And so it is with problems - our water-related woes were not finished with last week’s leak – the pool felt the need to join in with the fun, and turned light blue. It looked quite pretty, the sort of pool that a child might paint, but water should be see-through, and our pool, although an attractive colour, was more than opaque. Frank answered the clarion call of the beleaguered Biggs’s. ‘Your water’s dead.’ He said in much the same voice as he might say ‘Your lettuce has bolted.’ I was surprised. I never regarded water has being either alive or dead. I have heard of ‘the Water of Life’ and various other such phrases, but I always thought of them as rhetorical. However, Frank should know, he’s the expert. The only solution was to empty the pool. I have no idea how to calculate how much water is in a pool – I am happy to accept ‘a lot’ as being an adequate answer. While we were pondering how long it would take us to form a human chair of 2 and bucket the water out Frank had rigged up a pipe, dug a channel and persuade the pool to empty itself. Our garden flooded, then over flooded and eventually a veritable river ran down the road. We ceased worrying about the human chain scenario and began to worry about the How many tankers will we need to fill it, and How much will they cost? Enter Wayne from 2 houses down, who saw the flood and concluded that we must have a major leak. He was uncertain whether to offer us life jackets or help with building an Ark, a project that could be trickey in an area with very few decent sized trees. As we stood watching euros flowing down the road in liquid form I bemoaned the inevitable expenditure of replacing said liquid euros. ‘You don’t need a tanker. Fill it from the tap.’ He advised. ‘Won’t Galasa be cross?’ I know that Galasa take a very dim view of those who in their eyes are profligate with water. ‘No, not if you ring them and tell them what you are doing.’ I rang them. ‘Fine.’ Said the girl in the office. Thus emboldened I attached the garden hose and turned on the tap. 51 hours later the pool was full of bright new totally transparent water! We haven’t had the bill yet!
The only thing more beautiful than walking along the promenade at Mojácar Playa under the light of a full moon, is doing so while raising money to support MACS. On July 8th you will have the opportunity to do both. The Mojácar Area Cancer Support charity (MACS) is our local cancer charity and is a volunteer run organization that provides physical and emotional support for cancer patients and their loved ones.MACS is sponsoring both a 5 kilometer and 10 kilometer walk to raise money to support its activities. The 10k starts at Titos Chiringito at 21:00. The 5k starts at Big Fat Momas at 21:45. Both walks finish at Titos where there will be music and food available. To book a table call 950 615 030. The color for MACS is purple. Fancy dress and silly outfits are optional. Each walker is asked to obtain sponsors for his or her walk and to pay a two euro entrance fee on site. Dames in Turre “Mas Que Pintura” art show in Mojácar When Dames in Turre held their final meeting on May 29th before the Summer Break, they were very proud to present cheques to local charities. MACS received €1000 Equinac, AECC Turre Branch, Asprodalba and Stepping Stones all received €500 each. This year we have donated a staggering €9104.85 in total. On Monday June 12th the AGM was held at The Hostel Rural in Turre followed by a lovely meal presented by Manuela and her team, a big thankyou to everyone and may we wish you all a happy safe summer wherever you are and look forward to seeing everyone again in September
A stimulating exhibition of artworks under the name “Mas Que Pintura” (More Than Painting) has opened in Mojácar’s Municipal Art Centre, “La Fuente”, with a collection of over one hundred works by three local artists. Anika Poort, Bernice Willis and Didi Arias are exhibiting their works, which are full of life and sensitivity, with a very prominent role given to animals and nature. Anika Poort regards herself as self-taught, although she has worked with different professionals artists for more than 10 years. Her landscapes uniquely capture peace and tranquillity, atmospheres that only nature can provide. Like many other artists who have worked in Mojácar, Anika brings out the locality’s contrasting light and shade above all other influences, when she is in front of her canvas. Bernice Willis, a professional painter, also shares in Mojácar’s light and colours as inspiration, which give the extra dimension to her work. An internationally recognized artist and a well-liked local figure, she is an animal lover, shown in her portraits of dogs and cats. She regularly collaborates with Mojácar’s animal protection association, “PAWS” /”PATAS” as well as the “Galgos del Sol” charity, the elegant dogs she brilliantly brings to life in her paintings.
This artist has shown her solidarity by donating several paintings in the exhibition to raise funds for the associations she is involved with. Didi Arias, a long time Mojácar resident, has had a very eclectic background, covering a wide range of experience in teaching, art, writing and dance. These interests are also reflected in her works, which have been described from
elegant and moving to fanciful and surprising. There are works in all kinds of media and materials that in these artists’ hands have discovered life and dimension. The lovely small works that are made from the simplest rescued objects are remarkable, and especially striking. The exhibition runs until the end of June and, all the works on display are for sale.

Mojácar football players visit Benalmádena Youngsters from Mojácar Sports School, aged between 8 and 11, travelled to Benalmádena for a workshop organized by CEDIFA, Centro de Estudios, Desarrollo e Investigación del Futbol Andaluz (Andalucian Centre for Studies, Development and Football Research), and Mojácar Council in order to interact with other schoolchildren from all over Andalucia. Soccer matches in the junior categories do not have a competitive purpose but aim to foment camaraderie and a sporting spirit in the youngest athletes. There were prizes for all, for their interest in the sporting life and also a group visit to Tivoli and the beautiful town of Benalmádena. The 21 young footballers who attended the course were accompanied by their parents, teachers along with Mojácar Sports Councillor, Ana García. The Town Council subsidized 50% of cost of the trip. Ana García, who will later accompany students from all of the soccer categories to these friendly meetings, expressed her pleasure at the success of the trip. She also pointed out its importance, not just as a reward for the youngsters hard work during the year, but mainly for their teamworking, the exchange of experience with others and integration through sport. Among the many disciplines that the Municipal Sports School offers children and adults, football has the most participants, with teams in all categories.

Just like in Looney Tunes cartoons, an invisible Devil might be perched on one shoulder and an Angel on the other. Both are trying to persuade you to accept their point of view about an uncertain situation. Will ‘good’ triumph over ‘evil’? Much depends on how willing you are to accept that you’re not at risk of making as foolish a mistake as you might believe you are this week. Expect to be reassured about how fortuitous a situation really is.
For some time, you’ve been aware of how tedious or unsatisfactory a certain arrangement has been. You know what you’d do to bring an improvement if you had certain levels of power and influence. Yet, you’ve had to tolerate what has felt unacceptable through feeling powerless to change it. This week, your ruler, Venus, enters your sign. She’s coming to your rescue in more ways than one. New levels of comfort, closeness and optimism are all heading your way.
Enthusiasm sells. We’ve all seen situations where someone who hasn’t got a clue what someone else is really asking of them agrees to it only because of how enthusiastic the person asking is. Yet, there are times when asking in subtle or calm ways just doesn’t bring a desired result. This week, you might need to boost your enthusiasm levels in order to gain someone’s support or get them on the same page as you. It’s your enthusiasm that might instil a greater sense of urgency.
‘Sorry, the computer says ‘no’.’ We hear such words or the equivalent often in this day and age. Whereas we might have made progress by stating our case to a human, so many institutions enter specific data into a system and a program designed by a software engineer decides whether the answer is ‘yes’ or ‘no’. This week, you might need to go beyond tedious systems and protocols to get an answer you need. Don’t be fobbed off with a lame, generic excuse.
We those who are brave and the sincere are rewarded far more than cautious and unimaginative. For you, this is a time to be strong, proud, daring, ambitious and, above all else, confident. Developments this week could – and should – encourage you to a courageous step towards the fulfilment of a dream. Be less concerned about what might go ‘wrong’ and focus instead on how much you’re going to do that’s ‘right’. The latter outweighs the former significantly.
‘If you want to fly with eagles, don’t surround yourself with turkeys.’ The saying implies we must selective about with whom we associate if we’re to be successful. However, we know if we removed anyone from our world that we believed to be a negative influence, we’d end up feeling lonely pretty quickly. This week, it becomes clear success in a particular area requires likemindedness between you and certain others. Don’t be too harsh with your selection process.
‘Start as you mean to go on.’ That’s helpful advice if we’re reassured we’re starting something in the right way. We often undertake plans blindly, believing we’re pursuing the right course of action until such time we discover otherwise. This week, the sky doesn’t imply you’re at risk of wasting time of effort but it is assisting you to embark upon a plan that needs only the right levels of motivation and inspiration. With these right, you can be certain you’re heading in the right direction.
You might struggle to find necessary levels of motivation or inspiration this week. There. Is it necessary for me to say more? You might think I’ve just given you a negative summary of the coming week but that only applies if you choose to accept that you won’t be able to summon motivation or inspiration in ways you need to. So, let’s see how able you are to prove me wrong. Given the celestial support you have to find both if you want them, you should succeed admirably.
Generally, when Sagittarians decide to pursue a particular plan that interests them to the point of intrigue or fascination, there are no limits to how deeply an Archer will dig to find out as much as possible about whatever-it-is. That’s one of your many admirable qualities. However, this week, your determination to find a particular answer or truth could cause you to dig a hole that will become deep surprisingly quickly. Be careful not to allow your keenness to become obsessive.
Rarely do we fast-forward films to the end because we accept how integral numerous scenes are to the big finale. With that in mind, consider the process you’re keen to accelerate – and why. Skipping over the important bits could mean you reach an ending that might not make sense. This week, as keen as you might be to move a process forward, recognize the essentialness of allowing it to play out, one scene at a time.
This week, guard against labouring a point. Be aware of the consequences of overstating your case. You might believe it’s necessary to provide more information rather than not enough in a particular way. It’s important to trust that ‘less is more’ where conveying yourself is concerned. In fact, your mission this week is about planting seeds of information in someone’s mind that need to be allowed to grow. Adopting a more subtle approach will ensure that happens.
A daunting quality attached to a particular plan should show signs of diminishing this week. Where you might have felt isolated or unsupported, you look set to discover otherwise. That’s why you can afford to step forward bravely and confidently. The time for weighing up options in a particular way is drawing to a close. If it isn’t already becoming clear how you have the one option you need and how it needs you to accept it, then it will do shortly.
Jo Cox – More in Common
Jo Cox’s murder in June 2016 shocked the world. In the aftermath of her tragic death her husband Brendan Cox urged us to remember Jo’s life and what she stood for and not the manner of her death.
In this moving and impassioned portrait of Jo - as daughter, mother, wife, sister, MP and activist - we see how much she gave and much more she had to give. It’s a wonderfully touching and very human portrait of an extraordinary woman, whose legacy will inspire others. “Jo Cox’s selfless service to others made the world a better place” - Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States “Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo’s friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo. Jo believed in a better world and fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.” - Brendan Cox, 16 June 2016 All Brendan Cox’s royalties will go to the Jo Cox Foundation.

War for the Planet of the Apes In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. “Apes. Together. Strong!” It’s been the mantra of ape leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) ever since he and his intelligence-boosted simian brethren started forming their own society in the ruins of a virus-ravaged human world. But now he faces the biggest challenge to his extended family’s safety and his own moral code in War For The Planet Of The Apes. Directed once again by Dawn’s Matt Reeves from a script he wrote with that movie’s scribe Mark Bomback, War finds Caesar dealing with tragedy and then hitting the road (and the beach, and the forest, and the mountains, and a military compound) as he searches for a new home for his clan. It won’t be an easy journey for Serkis’ troubled chimp, either physically or mentally. He’s just broken the core tenet of Ape culture (“ape shall not kill ape”), remember, by killing Koba in the previous outing. And as the human military presses in to take down the ape society, he confronts a new enemy: a commander known as The Colonel (Woody Harrelson), who has no qualms about ditching human ethics to save humanity. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet. War for the Planet of the Apes is released in the USA on July 14th.

James Bond is sent on his first mission as 007, a first also for Daniel Craig as the British agent and the 21st Bond movie to have been produced. This recent reboot of Bond is one of the best of the current crop, an entertaining spy adventure with plenty of action and grit. Bond takes on Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), banker to the worlds terrorists, in a high stakes game of poker where even winning might not save him or his colleague Vesper Lynd (Eva Green). Assisted by CIA agent Felix Leiter (Jeffery Wright) and of course M (Judi Dench) and without the humour of the previous films this origins story is a successful if sometimes violent addition to the 007 universe and it´s great to see him back in an Aston Martin.
ONE TO WATCH
Friday 23rd June, BBC2 8pm to 9pm You know it´s summer when the BBC´s coverage of the Glastonbury festival kicks off. This is the first show on BBC2 presented by Jo Whiley, Huw Stephens and Clara Amfo. There is a look at the highlights of the weekend ahead and news and performances from the famous stages from the first day of the festival. With coverage continuing on both BBC2 and BBC four throughout the weekend. Perhaps this year will see an event without the mud? However there is sure to be plenty of other suprises and great performances to come.
Ian Hislop presents a witty take on how Britain tackled mass immigration from the 1890´s onwards in the hope we might learn something from how it was handled. The Victorians for example had been proud of their open door immigration policies with one declaring Britain “the asylum of nations”. Late in the 19th century these views came up against oposition as the debate over who should or should not be let in commenced, triggered by rising numbers of immigrants.

What is narcolepsy? Do you fight to stay awake during the day? Is exhaustion part of your everyday life?
If the urge to sleep is overwhelming and irresistible, it may be a sleep disorder called narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is one of the most frequently diagnosed primary sleep disorders, although it's not always easy to recognize. There are five major symptoms of narcolepsy. Many of them can be confused with other medical conditions such as depression or epilepsy, making a narcolepsy diagnosis somewhat tricky says Dr. Raj Dasgupta, pulmonary and sleep specialist at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. "Approximately half of the people affected by narcolepsy remain undiagnosed. A diagnosis can take up to 10 years to receive. We need greater awareness of narcolepsy to help expedite the diag-
nosis process for patients.” Everyone with narcolepsy has excessive daytime sleepiness. That's when you feel tired all the time, making it hard to stay awake and alert throughout the day. It can be described as feeling fatigued or irritable, having difficulty concentrating, poor memory, or mood changes. Patients say it comes in waves, like a sleep attack? These can happen during unusual situations, such as in the middle of a meal, a conversation or bike ride. There are five major symptoms, but you don't need to experience them all to have narcolepsy. 1. Excessive daytime sleepiness: As discussed above, this is when you have an irresistible urge to sleep during the day. 2. Cataplexy: The weaken-
ing of muscles when you feel strong emotions like embarrassment, laughter, surprise, or anger. Cataplexy can cause your head to drop, your face to droop, your jaw to weaken, or make your knees give way. 3. Sleep disruption: When you often fall asleep quickly but wake up frequently throughout the night. 4. Sleep paralysis: Feeling unable to move or speak for a short time when falling asleep or waking up. You may also feel like you can't breathe. 5. Vivid dreaming. Often frightening dreamlike experiences that seem real and happen when falling asleep or waking up. You may experience hearing sounds or words when drifting to sleep or have unwanted visions. Sleep
paralysis often accompanies these vivid dreams. Narcolepsy occurs equally as often in men and women. The symptoms often start between the ages of 10 and 25, but it can take up to 12 years for narcolepsy to fully develop. Narcolepsy is a debilitating disease as it can cause difficulties at work, negatively impact social interactions, lower self-esteem, and create challenges performing everyday tasks. Contrary to popular belief, people with narcolepsy do not spend more time sleeping than the average person. it's normal to feel tired sometimes: Dr. Dasgupta says. "But if the urge to fall asleep is interfering with your job or personal life, it might be time to talk to a sleep specialist:

Be bold, be different and give it a try! When it comes to some of our favourite dishes and ingredients, we often get stuck in a rut and never try to spice them up. Try the following seven original tips.... Put chocolate chips in… chilli! For deep, rich-tasting vegetarian chilli, stir in semi-sweet chocolate chips at the end of cooking. After you’ve cooked the chilli, remove from the heat and stir in 2tbs semi-sweet chocolate chips, salt and pepper.
Improve guacamole with…yogurt! Line the bottom of a strainer with cheesecloth and set over a medium bowl. Spoon in 65g plain yogurt, cover and chill overnight until yogurt “cheese” is thick and creamy. Mix up your favourite guacamole ingredients in a large bowl, then fold in the yogurt cheese and 65g sour cream to make an amazing dip. Perk up steak with…coffee! Mix fine coffee grounds into a spice rub for a rich, aromatic flavour. For an especially good combination, mix together ground espresso or other coffee, paprika, chilli powder, cumin, salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add a touch of sugar.
Wake up potato salad with…horseradish! Potato salads tend to be mild and creamy from mayonnaise or sharp from vinegar. But for an amazing potato salad, prepare your usual recipe and simply stir in a teaspoon or two of prepared horseradish.
Blackberry Ginger Mocktail Ginger, honey and lemon are a classic combination that work well made with either hot water as a spicy hot toddy, or simply left cold as in this recipe. This does call for the quick and easy choice of a can of ginger ale, but also uses blackberries for more flavour. Ingredients 5 blackberries, ½ thinly sliced lemon, handful of ice cubes,1 small can (150ml) ginger ale, 1 teaspoon of honey or Maple syrup. Instructions 1. Add the blackberries and lemon slices in a cup. Add on the ice cubes. Slowly, pour in the ginger ale. Add on a teaspoon of honey and give it a quick stir. 2. Serve immediately with a straw to crush the blackberries before drinking.
Add sour cream to… pasta sauce! To give your sauce a rich flavour, stir in 30g sour cream per 260g sauce. Cook over a low heat until the sour cream blends into the sauce. Keep the sauce warm over a low heat, but don’t allow it to boil or the cream may curdle.
Squeeze lemon over… pasta! Skip the salt when you boil pasta. Instead, squeeze in half a lemon - you’ll give your pasta some zip and cut down on your sodium intake.
Amp up eggs with…cream cheese! Cream cheese gives eggs a smooth texture that’s irresistible. Melt 2tbs butter and 30g cream cheese in a skillet before adding the beaten egg mixture. Cook over medium-low heat until the eggs are just firm, yet moist.

Is Aiden O’Brien the greatest trainer of all-time?
Scores of people in the world of horse racing from owners to stable lads to jockeys to sponsors and even punters - have, over the last month or so, asked this simple question: ‘Is Aiden O’Brien the greatest trainer of all-time?” I would say yes – certainly in my lifetime at least. These are the simple facts about the likeable Irishman who was born in County Wexford on 16 October 1969, was a teenager jockey and is currently based in Ballydoyle near Cashel in Tipperary… • Since he started training in his native Ireland in 1996, Aiden has saddled 284 top race/G1 winners – 89 in Ireland, 123 in Great Britain, 39 in France, 23 in the USA, three in Italy, three in the UAE, two in Canada and one in both Australia and Hong Kong. • He has sent out 28 GB Classic winners - six in the Derby, six in the Oakes, eight in the 2,000 Guineas, four in the 1,000 Guineas and four in the St Leger. • He’s also had 37 Irish Classics winners including seven in the 1,000 Guineas, 11 in the 2,000 Guineas, five in both the Oaks and St Leger and one in the Derby. • Five-time GB champion flat race trainer and Ireland’s top man
on ten occasions, he has won the Irish jumping title five times as well. • Horses trained by Aiden have won a record 55 races at Royal Ascot, with seven of them coming first in the Gold Cup. • As a trainer in GB and Ireland in 2016 Aiden gained £11.9 million in winnings and over the last 20 years the amount of prize money won by his horses has been in excess of £100 million.
Fact File
Aiden and his lovely wife Anne-Marie have four children - Joseph, Sarah, Anastasia and Donnacha – and all of them are jockeys. Joseph, a former apprentice at his father’s yard, rode his first winner shortly after his sixteenth birthday, on Johann Zoffany at Leopardstown in May 2009. And his first group winner followed on the same track in the Desmond Stakes in August 2010 on Beethoven, trained by his father. In 2012 Aiden and Joseph (then 19) became the first father-son/trainer-jockey combination to win the Epsom Derby, with Camelot. Aiden’s five other Derby winners have been Galileo (2001), High Chaparral (2002), Ruler of the World (2013), Australia (2014) and Wings of Eagles (2017). Camelot also won the 2,000 Guineas in 2012. Among the other top-line horses under Auden trainership we have Gleneagles (winner of both the Irish and English 2,000 Guineas), Hawk Wing, Istabraq, Minding (another 2,000 Guineas winner), Misty For Me, Mozart, Rip Van Winkle, Rock of Gibralter (owned by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and also a 2,000 Guineas champion), Treasure Beach andYeats Aiden, who is backed by the Coolmore Operation which is renowned for high priced yearling purchases at the Keeneland September Yearling Sales and elsewhere, is not related to the former Irish trainer from Cork, Vincent O’Brien, who died in 2009.
This week in sporting history… • 1932 Yorkshire openers Bert Sutcliffe and Percy Holmes put on 555 for the first wicket against Essex. • 1932 Jack Sharkey beat Max Schmelling in two World heavyweight title fights • 1936 Sprinter Jesse Owens set a new 100m world record in 10.2 seconds • 1938 Italy defeated Hungary 4-1 in football’s World Cup final. • 1951 Ben Hogan won the 51st US Open at Oakland Hills. • 1953 England beat USA 6-3 in New York in first floodlit international. • 1954 Rocky Marciano beat Ezzard Charles to win world heavyweight title. • 1968 Lee Tevino became the first golfer to play all four rounds of US Open under par. • 1970 Golfer Phil Mickelson was born in San Diego, California. • 1972 West Germany defeated the USSR 3-0 in the European Championship final in Brussels. • 1977 Kevin Keegan first English player to
be sold abroad for £500,000 – moving from Liverpool to Hamburg. • 1978 Ian Botham took 8-34 for England against Pakistan – his best-ever bowling figures. • 1980 Hibernian became first Scottish football club to install under-soil heating. • 1984 Ed Moses won his 100th consecutive 400m hurdles race. • 1986 Ray Wilkins became first Englishman to be sent-off in World Cup, redcarded against Morocco. • 2000 Tiger Woods won the 100th US Open at Pebble Beach. • 2002 Lennox Lewis knocked out Mike Tyson in the 8th round to retain his WBC world heavyweight title. • 2006 Carolina Hurricanes beat Edmonton Oilers 4-3 to win ice hockey’s Stanley Cup for the first time.

All new Kia Rio
31
20th - 26th June 2017
Following its world debut at the 2016 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, the all-new KIA Rio has made its South African debut. Now in its fourth generation, KIA’s popular B-segment contender features not only a progressive, stylish and awardwinning exterior design, but also a redesigned interior with a thoroughly up-to-date ‘floating’ interface and a raft of new in-car technologies. The Rio is one of KIA’s best selling models globally, with particularly the outgoing thirdgeneration model credited with establishing the Korean brand as a force to be reckoned with. Despite it nearing the end of its life cycle, the outgoing model still sold almost 450,000 units globally in 2016, accounting for 15% of KIA’s annual sales. In South Africa, the Rio has also been a consistent bestseller for KIA, along with the Picanto and Sportage making up the brand’s core trio of game changers. Following its launch in 2012, the Rio hatch was an immediate success and was consistently lauded by the public and motoring media alike. Not only did it come out tops in the Standard Bank People’s Wheels Awards, but it was also nominated as a finalist in the WesBank / SAGMJ Car of the Year competition – following in the footsteps of its 2006 predecessor. The new, fourthgeneration Rio has big shoes to fill, but more than lives up to the challenge with its progressive design, class-leading practicality, more engaging ride and handling and greater safety credentials. Having already scooped up the prestigious international iF Product Design Award and Red Dot Design Award, it shows that the new Rio is perfectly ready and set to outrun ordinary. “As one of our best-selling models locally, the Rio is an important car for us. The Bsegment is a hotly contested area of the new car market, and the third-generation Rio has introduced more people to the KIA brand than ever before. It is vital that the new Rio continues the momentum for the brand,” says David Sieff, Marketing Director, KIA Motors South Africa. “The Rio’s attractive design, low running costs and practical nature have made the car a ‘gateway’ to the brand, an entry point into KIA ownership for hundreds of thousands of buyers around the world. It’s for these reasons that the outgoing model has sold in record numbers. The all-new Rio builds on these strengths and has been designed and engineered to meet the needs and desires of a wider range of buyers – it is now even more desirable thanks to a more enjoyable drive, a striking new design and improved safety.” The new KIA Rio is offered with revised versions of KIA’s familiar naturally aspirated 1.25-litre and 1.4-litre MPI (multi-point injection) petrol engines. The 1.25-litre engine produces peak power of 62 kW at 6,000 r/min and 120 Nm torque at 4,000 r/min. The 1.4-litre engine produces 74 kW at 6,300 r/min and 135 Nm torque at 4,200 r/min. Both engines apply power to the front wheels, either through a fivespeed manual transmission (on the Rio 1.2) or a six-speed manual transmission (on the Rio 1.4-litre). A fourspeed automatic transmission is available on 1.4-litre models.
