El Ejido honours domestic violence victims

El Ejido City Council has joined with the Network of Free Municipalities of Trafficking to denounce domestic violence. The event, which took place at the Patio of Lights in the city, included representatives from political parties, social groups and citizens who wanted to express their condemnation of domestic violence. The Councillor for Social Services and Women, Delia Mira, said that “it is necessary and fundamental to denounce these types of situations throughout the year. Days like today serve to show our support to the victims, to show that we are on their side and that there is always a way out.” A ‘Tree of Wishes’ was erected displaying messages of support for the victims of gender violence. Candles were lit on behalf of the 28 women and six minors who have lost their lives this year alone to domestic violence. The similar events were carried out in municipalities across the country in response to the extremely high number of domestic violence instances in Spain. In February, five women were killed in a four-day period alone. In 2016, 39 were killed and in 2015 the number killed by their partners was 48. 54 were killed in 2014 and another 54 killed during 2013 according to figures released by Spain's Equality Ministry. In 2016, Spanish courts handed down 10,570 decisions, of which 7,344 were convictions, and 3,226 were acquittals for domestic violence related incidents.

by Alastair Stewart There’s a real danger that our responses to terrorist incidents are giving the murderers behind them what they want. Over the last three months, the UK has been hit by four terror attacks in Manchester and London. In the inevitable media frenzy, the repeated questions and statements were about how the perpetrator was radicalised, what are we going to do about the on-going problem and what the motivation behind the attack was. News outlets to various degrees deal with these issues and with varying levels of sympathy or defence. Regrettably, they are nearly always to do with Islamic terrorism. And the name is misleading, conflating religious extremism with religion, practised by hundreds of millions, with the behaviour of murderers. So when a Caucasian male rammed into Muslims walking near Finsbury Park

Mosque in London after prayers, the press and the public don’t know how to react and the incident was initially called a crime. Whether we realise it or not, the reactions we give to incidents like this determine how successful terrorism really is. ‘Radical Islamists’ is a confusing term because it conflates religion with murder. To call the Finsbury Park suspect anything other than a terrorist is plain wrong, in the same way that Americans seldom label mass shooters as the work of Christian or white perpetrators. A terrorist is a terrorist, irrespective of their religion. Political commentator Simon Jenkins makes the case that calling incidents like these terrorist incidents, and reacting to them as such, gives terrorists the attention they covet. It also attempts to divide the country by making the majority white population suspicious of its Muslim community. Consider, too, how little we know or

care about terrorist atrocities across the world. If something happens in London or Europe social media activates ‘safety’ buttons and support labels and everything else. That’s because the violence is relatively close to home. Our knowledge and our sympathies are confined to a small part of the globe. Human beings have not overcome their line of sight, something moral philosopher Peter Singer argued in his essay ‘Famine, Affluence, and Morality.’ What we must be careful of, is letting this weakness be perverted - there will always be parts of life and society, like Islam, which we do not completely understand but ignorance cannot be substituted with blanket contempt. Terrorism, or violence directed against innocents in any way, is despicable and reprehensible and is murder by a different name. Whatever your background, we’re all vulnerable to it.

Successful San Juan fiesta wasn’t all rubbish

Many across Spain have been celebrating the fiestas of San Juan which begins with traditional beach parties with people straddling and jumping over small bonfires, and culminates with many cities burning the famous Hogueras the following evening. These traditions are also celebrated in Almeria and after the activities of the weekend prompted the Mayor, Ramón Fernández-Pacheco, to highlight the “normality and tranquillity” of the event and to complement the “exemplary” behaviour of the Almerians. He

went on to say that there has been a real sense of fun and enjoyment shared by all that have come to the area and have filled the beaches. “There have been so many highlights and we should all celebrate this as good news. The good weather that accompanied the day has certainly helped and the climax of the firework display from the castle was the perfect ending.” Mayor Fernández-Pacheco also wanted to “thank the work done by all the people who have participated in the San Juan fiestas, around two hundred, contributing

with their hard work and professionalism so that everything went smoothly.” As with any major fiesta there is a major cleaning-up operation and this year was no different. Supervised personally by the head of Municipal Services, Juan José Alonso, it got underway at 0600 on the Saturday morning enabling everything to be returned to normal and allow people to enjoy the beaches over the weekend. An incredible 30,500 kilos of rubbish was removed from the beaches.

Tourism tops Barcelona local’s concerns Forget local unemployment, it’s mass tourism that’s become the principal concern for residents of Barcelona. According to a survey published last week, it’s the millions of visitors, the rising costs of rent and a feeling that the local traditions of the big city are being eroded that are the forefront of the local population. Even though those surveyed only totalled 800 in a city of 1.6 million, 19% put tourism as the biggest problem, overtaking both unemployment and working conditions which came in at just 12.4% which had been the top of the list since 2009. Deputy Mayor Gerardo Pisarello said: “This isn’t a problem of ‘tourist phobia,’ people in Barcelona like to travel and appreciate people visiting. It’s about a concrete malaise caused by overcrowding in certain districts.” However, accounting for 14% of the economic wealth of Barcelona, tourism is one of the city’s principal engines for growth and it’s estimated that is accounts for 65,000 direct jobs.

25% of hospital staff are on a temporary contract Fears have been raised over the high number of hospital workers who have a temporary contract in Almeria. The Independent Trade Union Confederation and Officials of Almeria (CSIF-A) have reported that about 400 staff of the Hos-pital de Poniente Public Health Agency in El Ejido, El Toyo, Gu-adix and Loja do not have a permanent position. CSIF has demanded a definitive Public Employment Offer to sta-bilise employment and to stop the departure of professionals look-ing for more permanent work. On 12 December, representatives of CSIF Almería met with the hospital manager, José Antonio Hernández and reiterated the need to forge a real and firm commitment that promotes perma-nent employment. The union also advised that the elimination of temporality in work will lead to an improvement in the quality of care available to patients.

Cash machines celebrate 50 years of wall-to-wall service It was on Tuesday 27th June 1967 – 50 years ago today – that Barclays Bank in Enfield, North London became the home of the world’s first cash machine. The original idea for the cash machine came from John Shepherd-Barron of De La Rue Instruments, who was annoyed to arrive a minute after his branch had closed one Saturday and couldn’t get access to his money. De La Rue offered the idea to Barclays, who leapt at the chance to develop the new technology. The machines were developed jointly by De La Rue Instruments and the bank’s Management Services Department, and were installed outside branches so that customers could obtain cash anytime, day or night. The new service, known in those early days as Barclaycash was designed to dispense £10 against a special paper voucher which the customer inserted into the machine. By keying in a personal code number (initially 6 digits rather than 4), the customer could obtain cash in a matter of seconds. Within two years, the first machine was ready. Enfield was chosen as the location due to its cross-section of population, a good pavement

façade, high windows, and plentiful interior space. On 27th June, a crowd gathered to watch with bank officials and the Mayor of Enfield as TV comedy star most famous for his role as Stan Butler in On The Buses, Reg Varney, became the world’s first cash machine customer. At first, just six such machines were installed at selected branches and, despite being the victim of vandalism at first, proved popular. Commentators immediately saw the potential of the ‘robot cashier’ and talked about installing them in airports and at railway stations, and of customers using them even when the bank was open. By the 1970s, the machines had been refined in order to offer not only cash but also bank statements and deposit facilities as soon as the customer entered their card and PIN (Personal Identification Number). On 30th June 1975, a more sophisticated auto teller machine (ATM), called Barclaybank was launched. The first two branches to offer the new machines were High Street and Cornmarket Street, Oxford. The machines were operated using a plastic card bearing the name Barclaybank. In 1986, the ATMs of Barclays, Lloyds, Royal Bank of Scotland and

Bank of Scotland were linked, enabling Barclaybank holders to make cash withdrawals from any of the four banks machines, with the West of England Building Society joining the reciprocal arrangement in 1988. Barclaybank machines were not only installed outside branches: in 1986, a machine was unveiled at an NCR factory; in 1990, the 10,000th ATM built by NCR, a Barclaybank, was installed as a working exhibit in the Science Museum, Kensington; machines were installed in the House of Commons in 1990 and the House of Lords in 1996. The first ‘drive-thru’ cash machine in the UK was opened in May 1998 at Hatton Cross, near Heathrow Airport by Cheryl Baker, TV presenter. It joined the fastest growing network of ATMs in the country which by 1999 had reached 3,200. Today, more than 80% of cash withdrawn from banks is obtained through cash machines. Of the 63,000 cash machines in the UK, more than 42,000 are situated away from bank branches. The cash machine has become an indispensable part of modern life, and has certainly come a long way since Reg Varney opened the first one exactly fifty years ago today (Tuesday).

‘EU’ is a Remainer, ma’am? It’s an accepted part of British tradition that the monarch shows a complete and total impartiality when it comes to politics and the issues of the day.

Her son and heir, The Prince of Wales, has been known for his outspoken views on a variety of subjects over the years and his selection of ‘black spider memos’ to government ministers have become legendry. However, his mother has kept her own Queen’s Counsel to herself. She defines the word inscrutable, so it was with some raising of the eyebrows when HM Queen Elizabeth II was seen to possibly display her own hidden views on the subject of Brexit. Whether it was a coincidence or an example of what is known to be a wicked and mischievous sense of humour, she opened parliament last week wearing a hat that looked very much like the flag of the European Union. In a dressed-down State Opening of Parliament due to the snap General Election that would traditionally see Her Majesty wearing full regalia and the Imperial Crown, she sported a blue hat adorned with blue flowers each containing a bright yellow disc in the centre, looking suspiciously like stars from a distance. As the speech was taking place, social media exploded with the usual jokers and conspiracy theorists. “Queen delivers speech outlining Brexit plans wearing a hat that looks suspiciously like a EUROPEAN flag,” the Daily Mail newspaper tweeted. Others on Twitter didn’t take too long to make up composite images, with one half showing Elizabeth wearing the hat, the other showing the flag. A headline published in The Sun newspaper last year claiming that the queen “backed Brexit” based on alleged overheard conversations, prompted official denials and a subsequent complaint to press regulators from Buckingham Palace, which ruled that it was significantly misleading.

Kim Jong-un wants his own Ben i-dorm

A delegation of 20 officials from North Korea enjoyed a fact-finding road trip earlier this month from the French border through Barcelona and Valencia to Alicante, seeking ideas and inspiration as the country plans its own large beach resort in Wonsan, a port city on the country’s eastern coast. According to a spokesman for the North Korean embassy based in Madrid, the delegation was “amazed by the dimensions” of Benidorm’s towers and holiday parks, but added that the Marina d’Or enclosed tourism complex in Oropesa del Mar was the closest match to their plans in Wonsan, “aimed at the domestic and international markets”. The delegation apparently showed little or no interest in Barcelona, ignoring such architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudí or the famous Rambla boulevard. “We wanted to focus on the beaches because that is what we are interested in,” the embassy spokesman said. The delegation was, however, captivated by the Benidorm history-based theme park Terra Mítica, suggesting that

Wonsan may one day boast an amusement park showing how North Korea evolved to perfection on the shoulders of its Asian forerunners. “They loved the recreation of the various ancient Mediterranean civilisations. It would be very interesting to apply that concept in our theme park, maybe with Asian civilisations,” the embassy said. In Benidorm, as well as visiting the resort’s towering hotel buildings, the group went to a local campsite, where they left some clues about the kind of accommodation North Koreans may be using when the Wonsan complex is ready. According to a report as part of the online newspaper El Confidencial, Matías Pérez Such, one of the trip organisers said: “They asked many detailed questions about the costs of each element in the campsite. If they want to develop tourism, it’s logical that they start from the bottom up with campsites and not 55-floor hotels. But it’s positive that they want to stop being the most hermetic country in the world,” Mr Pérez Such added. “Tourism breaks down barriers.”

Facebook to allow easier disaster fundraising In the hours after the fire which swept through Grenfell Tower last Wednesday, Facebook said it would soon allow its U.S. users to raise and donate money using its “Safety Check” feature, to make it easier for people affected by natural disasters and violent attacks to receive help. “Safety Check,” launched in 2014, allows users of Facebook to assure friends that they are safe. The feature was used for the first time in the United States last year after a gunman massacred 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. According to an official Facebook blog posting, the fundraising tool in “Safety Check” will roll out in the coming weeks in the United States. The social network, which has an estimated 1.94 billion users worldwide, activated “Safety Check” for users in London on Wednesday following the fire in the London housing block. It also made the tool available earlier this month following deadly attacks on London Bridge. Facebook also said its “Community Help” feature, which helps people affected by disasters find each other locally to provide and receive assistance, would soon expand to include desktop users.

Calling all retired Service personnel Backed by £2 million from the Ministry of Defence’s Covenant Fund, ‘Veterans’ Gateway’ is designed to help former Servicemen and women of all ages and backgrounds navigate their new lives as civilians.

From advice on housing and finance to help with health concerns, the Gateway will bring together the vast range of charities and support on offer, guiding veterans directly to the help they need, when and where they need it. The new 24-hour online chat, phone, and text message service brings the Armed Forces support community together in a single place for the first time - delivered by a Royal British Legion-led consortium with Poppyscotland, Combat Stress, Connect Assist, the Ministry of Defence and SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity. The service centre, based near Cardiff in South Wales, is manned partly by veterans to help ensure that callers can speak to someone who can understand their experience. Tobias Ellwood, Minister for Defence People and Vet-

erans said: “The vast majority of our people make a smooth transition from military to civilian life, but the Veterans’ Gateway provides extra support in the form of a staffed, 24-hour, one-stop-shop offering guidance on housing and employment, finance, mental and physical health. Our £2 million investment honours the nation’s Armed Forces Covenant and draws all facets of support for our Armed Forces community together for the first time.” Veterans’ Gateway has been established in response to Lord Ashcroft’s 2014 Veterans’ Transition Review, which called for the process by which veterans are guided to welfare support services to be made easier to navigate. It honours the Armed Forces Covenant – a pledge, enshrined in law, that former and current members of the armed forces, and their families, should suffer no disadvantage because of their service to the nation. Mediterranean rescues show no signs of abating

Another 88 migrant adults and a baby have been rescued by the Spanish Salvamento Marítimo in the Alborán Sea. They were located aboard two boats on Thursday as part of an ongoing operation to both find existing attempts at crossing the dangerous sea between the African mainland and Spain, and to prevent future such incursions. A central government spokesman said that all those rescued are of sub-Saharan origin and appear to be in good health. The result of the first operation

saw the rescue of 42 adults – including 12 women and a baby – from a small boat floating about 14 miles northwest of Cape Tres Forcas on the North African coast. The ‘Guardamar Polimnia’ – the rescue ship – also had a further 34 men rescued from a raft that had been previously sighted in the same area by a Sasemar 101 spotter plane. The same government sources have indicated that both a save and rescue and a prevention exercise will continue in association with the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre in Almería.

Cyber attacks not affecting digital plans Businesses are pressing ahead with their digital transformation plans, despite fears of being hit by a cyber attack or data protection regulations. This is according to a new independent research report from Advanced, which questioned over 500 senior executives in UK organisations about their attitudes to using the cloud as part of their digital transformation plans. Most organisations surveyed are concerned about security (82%) and data protection (68%) in the cloud but, perhaps surprisingly, 80% of them are not put off from adopting the cloud following recent high-profile cyber attacks such as WannaCry. A third (33%) of organisations admit to being experienced in the cloud and continue to consider it for all new projects, while 37% have recently launched cloud computing projects for the first time. Although positive, these findings should not negate the common concerns and challenges. The survey also found that businesses want better support if they are to execute their digital transformation plans effectively. Security is the biggest barrier, with 76% saying that governments should do more to protect

businesses and their customers from a cyber attack. Meanwhile, 82% of organisations want to see cloud providers do more to build confidence among those looking to adopt a digital transformation strategy, of which the cloud is fundamental. When asked what they look for in a provider, most say financial stability (69%), data held in a UK location (65%) and local support (58%) – above typical benefits touted by providers including scalability (46%) and the breadth of application offerings (38%). Jon Wrennall, CTO at Advanced, says: “It’s encouraging to see businesses are undeterred from using the cloud, which is fast becoming the right choice for many to drive efficiencies, innovate and grow. Sadly we are seeing the same concerns around security and data protection reported over and over again. It’s right to be concerned about security; it’s time that all of us as cloud services providers take a reality check. “As an industry and profession, we all need to proactively give clear guidance on security responsibilities and support organisations in being better

protected, ensuring devices and applications are properly patched and secured – those writing the software are clearly best placed to provide this. With General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force next year we also have a duty of care to provide clarity on how data is being stored and secured in the cloud.

“There’s still a job to be done in creating trust in the cloud and helping customers use the cloud in the right way for the digital transformation that’s right for them. Our survey shows most organisations want financially stable providers and prefer those that store data locally and offer local support; this will become even more pertinent

as Britain leaves the European Union. They will trust the providers that offer certainty in an uncertain market and those with a vested interest in the UK and the cloud.” The independent research was carried out following the results of the general election, during week commencing 12th June.

Recognition for charity computer work

David Shear, centre, and the PIRdA group Charity workers in Zurgena have been honoured for their work with local schools and libraries. A presentation was made by local councillors in Zurgena’s Municipal Theatre to David Shear of PIRdA (and Albox Computer Club) and his fellow volunteers. The group have worked with the town hall over the last six months to recondition 25 computers, including with educational software, for local schools and the municipal library. Mr Shear received a plaque and a commemorative

ceramic plate and all members of the PIRdA group received a red rose. The volunteers include David Shear, Christine Winter, David Sims, Bob Read, John Leigh, Peter Hird, Peter Hiden, Colin Gowan, Gerry Anderson, St. John Robinson, Len Toop, Frank Moorhouse and Ian Hurley. The group work through PIRdA, a charity which takes old or unwanted computers and IT equipment and reconditions it before giving them to local associations, charities and other deserving groups and individuals.

Spain in EU revolt ...but are they? by Ray Chadwick In a classic case of how UK newspapers can sensationalise information, a report in the UK Daily Express splashed a headline of: “SPANISH REVOLT: Two in three Spaniards want a say on EU membership after Brexit” According to a poll undertaken by the Pew Research Centre, 65% of Spaniards want a referendum on EU membership – the highest in any country questioned in the survey. It goes on to say that apart from Spain, there was high support in Greece, Italy and France in a survey that questioned almost 10,000 across the EU. An average of 53% across nine EU countries said that they supported having their own national referendums on continued EU membership in the same way as the UK in June 2016, but the countries with the highest percentage of people actually wanting to leave the EU were Greece and Italy – both with 35%; hardly a significant majority. And so we turn, finally, to those ‘revolting’ Spaniards. A mere 13% actually want to LEAVE the EU whereas across the EU bloc as a whole, it reached a staggeringly high 18%. The lesson here? Always read beyond the headline!

Dual mandates are wrecking British politics by Alastair Stewart A dual mandate is a practice whereby an elected representative serves in more than one elected position simultaneously. For example, an individual could be a Member of the Scottish Parliament, a local councillor, a Member of Parliament in Westminster or a Member of the European Parliament. MPs receive a salary of £74,000, but their other pay is cut by two-thirds while they serve in both positions (MSPs earn £60,685, but they would get £20,229, for example, with a combined salary of just under £95,000). The practice is not illegal, and although various attempts have been made to discourage and ban it, some representatives continue to do it with few resigning to concentrate on a single role. The benefits, so they say, is that an elected official can better represent their constituency at several levels of government across the land. An excellent notion, until you realise that the work of the average MSP or MP is the same and that the likelihood of a constituent needing a national issue resolved in various parliaments is rare. To compound the problem, elected representatives can have second jobs, as long as they declare the position as a public interest (being a local council-

lor is considered to be a separate employment altogether). They’ll also gain salaries if they chair committees or retain a ministerial appointment in addition to their basic package and incredibly generous parliamentary expenses which go with it. One of the reasons people switch off from politics is they feel they’re never told it straight and that their officials are, essentially, greedy if not corrupt. They think party spiel now takes precedence over humble public service and that wages are too high for the work done. And they’re not wrong. Unless an MSP

or MP holds a government position, their work is confined to constituency work, raising questions, voting or taking part in committees and debates (and for some, not even that). It doesn’t require various mandates to different institutions. What should be done? While they receive recommendations from independent bodies, Holyrood and Westminster still vote to set their salaries. While a political class with no outside experience is undoubtedly a bad thing, elected officials doing work that splits their time is worse. Legislation should be passed which confines public servants to a one elected body and limits second jobs. There can be no explanation for it, save for personal ambition or greed.

Spain lets the truckers in As reported in Moroccan news paper Al Massae, Spanish authorities have granted a new quota of permissions to Moroccan road hauliers crossing Iberian borders. Moroccan commercial trucks have been stuck at the port of Algeciras on the Spanish coast because they have not had authorization to cross into Spanish territory. The same source added that hundreds of Moroccan trucks owners were threatening to strike at the port of Tangier to prevent Spanish trucks from crossing Moroccan borders as a response to the ” treatment inflicted on them (Moroccans) by Spain.” As a result, the Iberian government has decided to grant 5,000 authorizations to Moroccan commercial truckers so they can cross the border without issue. Al Massae added that Spanish authorities introduced the new measures to prevent strikes threatened in Tangier which would affect Spanish business. This is, however, only a temporary solution while Spanish and Moroccan authorities look for a permanent solution.

the air is coming out – does it seem to be a steady rapid flow? If ‘Yes’, then you can relax a little. Step Two: Lighten the load. Do you need Skype and the long list of programs running constantly? All these force the Processor, Hard Disk and Memory to work harder and therefore create more heat. Look for, and shut down, anything that you don’t need RIGHT NOW! Step Three: Use a cooling rest. Most have fans built in to increase the airflow. In this heat you might want to consider getting one :-) That’s it for this week. See you next week.

Consumers love a little treat for themselves

Society might be getting more health conscious, but it’s not giving up its sweet tooth. Research from Mintel has revealed that 50 percent of people snack as a treat to themselves and more than 28 percent think that taste is more important than health. Nevertheless, 32 percent of consumers say the majority of snacks they eat are healthy and over one-quarter say they are snacking on healthier foods this year than in 2016. The survey matches a global trend showing that snacks which purport health-related benefits are among the fastest growing snack launches. Items with low or no allergen content accounted for 46 percent of total new snack products in 2017 (an increase of 30 percent over 2013). Not surprisingly, millennials (aged 23-40) are the most likely to snack four or more times per day (25 percent), compared to just 10 percent of Generation X consumers (aged 41-52) and 9 percent of those in the Baby Boomer generation (aged 53-71). Additionally, and with little surprise, 37% of consumers say they snack to give themselves a break during the day.

Sánchez urges return to left wing roots Recently re-elected Spanish Socialist party (PSOE) secretary general Pedro Sánchez has said that in the absence of a three-way governing pact with left wing rivals Podemos and the centre-right Ciudadanos (C’s) party, he will seek to form a legislative coalition of parties in Congress to systematically dismantle antiausterity legislation and other laws passed unilaterally since 2011 by the conservative Partido Popular (PP) of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Speaking to a packed auditorium of more than 5,000 rank-and-file PSOE activists, Sánchez closed the Socialists’ 39th party congress with a 45-minute speech in which he pledged to immediately begin conversations with both Podemos and Ciudadanos, though he warned that he’s not optimistic about a governing pact because of the two parties continued refusal to work together to unseat the Rajoy government. Barring that option, he said, “the PP does not have an absolute majority. We can reverse many of the retrograde laws together...we propose to open a space for negotiation and agreement with the rest of the forces of change in Parliament to dismantle the legislative action of the PP.” In keeping with the left wing direction of the leadership campaign that returned him to power following him being thrown out in an internal leadership coup last October, Sánchez stressed that the PSOE is the only party on the left of Spain’s political spectrum capable of defeating Rajoy’s PP and called on the party to return to its left wing roots as it moves forward. In a message directed at the party militants who supported his re-election bid, Sánchez pledged that as long as he remains PSOE secretary general, the party will follow the path urged by the late-Catalan Socialist leader Carme Chacón: “If we say left, we will be left; and if we say change, we will be the change.”

Who’s who in Almeria

In Almeria, like politics everywhere, it can be a little difficult to know who the key players are, and that's what we're looking at this week. Susana Diaz has been President of Andalusia since 2013. She’s also a leading national figure in PSOE, having contested the leadership of the national party in 2017, losing to Pedro Sanchez. The Presidency is one of the three branches of the Regional Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucia), along with the Parliament of Andalusia and the Council of Government. The Council is like a cabinet and has departments for health, education and forth. The Parliament is in Seville at the Hospital de las Cinco Llagas and the president at the Palace of San Telmo. Almeria has 102 municipalities, of which the city of Almeria is one. Ayuntamiento de Almería governs the city, and since 2015 Mayor Ramón Fernández-Pacheco Monterreal has been mayor with a minority PP administration out of 27 councillors in total. To confuse matters, the Diputación Provincial de Almería is the government for Almeria. It's elected indirectly by the number of councillors in the constituency and is lead by President Gabriel Amat Ayllón of PP. It also has delegates for health, equality, culture and so forth, as well as 27representatives in total. Its headquarters are 17 Navarro Rodrigo street in the city of Almeria. What’s worth noting, too, is that the biggest political parties are divided into national, regional and municipal levels. For PP, Mariano Rajoy is prime minister, but María Dolores de Cospedal is Secretary-General at the national level, and Juan Manuel Moreno is the leader in Andalusia and Gabriel Amat in Almeria. For PSOE,Pedro Sánchez is the national SecretaryGeneral while Susana Díaz is head of PSOE in Andalusia and José Luís Sánchez Teruel in Almeria. There are, of course, smaller but important parties like Podemos lead

by Pablo Iglesias nationally, Teresa Rodríguez in Andalusia and Antonio Heras in Almeria. At the Cortes Generales, there are 62 Deputies of 350 and 40 Senators of 264 from Andalusia. As a side note, the prime minister is also called president of the govern-

ment. The head of state is, in fact, King Felipe VI, who was crowned in 2014, and in whose name Rajoy leads the government. Of course, who leads is subject to change and elections. As Harold Macmillan said:"events, dear boy, events."

Black economy still significant

According to a recent report, the ‘black’ economy in Spain is equivalent to 16% of the country’s total economic production.

This translates into €168 billion that escapes the taxman’s gaze every year and a resulting €25.6 billion in uncollected tax revenue. These are the findings of a study carried out by REAFREGAF, part of the association of Spanish economists. The encouraging news is that this estimate is less than other studies that have placed the amount of annual tax lost at around €40 billion, as this particular exercise takes into account that not all ‘black’ money would be taxable.

One of the authors of the report, Jesús Quintas, said that the €25.6 billion was a “more realistic” figure. He also added that the percentage of fraud is similar to other countries like Germany or Denmark. The report makes 20 recommendations to fight the ‘black’ economy, which include educating the general public on their duty to pay the correct amount of taxes and using more automated electronic collection methods.

Size does matter

There are some events in our lives that we forever savour. These will include our first romance, special holiday or a treasured family moment. Never forgotten the occasion years ago when I closed my car doors and put Britain in my rear view mirror. Hallelujah! I never harboured misgivings about my Brexit. In fact, being a Europhile I looked forward to being in mainland Europe without the North Sea and English Channel to cross. I miscalculated: Here on the Costas I am further away from Europe than ever. The UK is well-equipped to provide low-cost excursions to Scandinavia, Baltic States, Denmark, Germany, Low Countries and France. Within 12 hours I could be in such locations and it didn’t cost me an Isle of Man leg. From my home in the UK there were cheap coach excursions to Paris, Belgium and elsewhere. Without breaking the bank one could catch a ferry to Denmark, Germany or Scandinavia. The choice of air routes is breath-taking and a daily flight to Riga inexpensive and takes only a little over two hours. When it comes to planes, trains and automobiles Spain simply doesn’t compare. The distance from Marbella to Biarritz is a deep-breath 1,076 km. From Cartagena to Perpignan is 815 km and there are then formidable distances to negotiate if one wishes to visit the aforementioned locations. It once occurred to me that it would be pleasing to motor from Costa Spain to the Baltic States where I am well-connected. Checking out Michelin Route Finder I caught my breath. Riga is 4,045 km distant. Even at an ambitious 700 km daily motorway marathon Latvia was a 6-day very expensive and formidable holiday option. There are no flights from the Costas to Riga; the second largest city in Northern Europe. After a four hour flight one has to alight in Lithuania and then travel by rickety road for another four hours. I then decided to see elsewhere in Europe. Yes, budget airlines are reasonably priced but only if the choice of destination is theirs not yours. Seeing Europe from Spain is problematic. I like Munich and always hankered to visit Budapest and Prague. The distances by road are 2,000 km, 2,500 km and 2,300 km respectively. I have to face facts; Spain is lovely in so many respects. However, if I want to take advantage of low cost access to northern, central and even southern Europe I should have stayed in Britain.

Things that go bump It wasn’t so much a bump as a Skribumsch. I had only just closed my eyes; I opened them again so as to be better able to hear but all was silent. Must be the wind rattling a shutter, I thought, and resumed my pursuit of sleep just as Sheep 26 scampered out of view of my mind’s eye. During the wee small hours I awoke. I thought I had heard Skribumsch, but if it was a ghost, then it was a one-Skribumsch ghost. Silence reigned, so I sank back into the slumber of the blameless. In the slightly larger small hours I woke again – Skribumsch! I tutted sleepily and heaved myself out of bed to close the bedroom door. I know that ghosts are supposed to be able to walk through doors, but I thought that a closed door might give it something to do as well as making it plain to it that it was not welcome in the bedroom. Normally the bedroom door remains open, and all animals on trust not to disturb the hallowed sleep of the humans. However, Her Royal Highness Sayyida al Hurra, Queen of the Mediterranean, has decided that first light is the time for all humans to be out of bed and serving cat breakfast. I shut the door securely, thus excluding all ghosts and 4 legged interlopers and returned to my slumbers. Skribumsch! Was it a ghost that couldn’t take a hint or was it a cat without a conscience?

Pause for thought By Jos Biggs

I favoured a cat, cartwheeling against the door. Although Her Royal Highness’s behaviour is normally so aloof as to make Queen Victoria look chummy, she does like to jump up at closed doors then perform a cartwheel in mid-air before landing back on her feet – I’m not aware that Queen Victoria ever listed this as one of her preferred pleasures! I slid out of bed and opened the bedroom door to give her a piece of my mind, when another Shribumsch diverted my attention to the wardrobe! I sidetracked, opened the wardrobe, and there! From within my summer tops out flowed Her Royal Highness Sayyida al Hurra, Queen of the Mediterranean! She sashayed past me, all sleek black fur and dignity, but on her way to the door she paused, waved her tail in a most regal manner and looked back at me withher citrus green eyes full of rebuke. ‘About time, too.’ She said as she glided past me to her breakfast place in the kitchen.

It’s amazing how difficult it is to settle down to any job when you’re host to a family of swallows! We watched with interest, and a lot of clearing up, as a pair of swallows set about building a whole series of nests in our veranda before choosing one in which to lay eggs. We watched with interest as the daily tally of eggs rose to 3, then 4 and eventually 5. Our interest continued as eggs hatched and the parents set into a fever of feeding, and the 5 chicks grew until they overflowed the nest, scrambling over each other to be fed. Yes, we watched with interest, but were well able to find time for the many essential tasks around the home. Today, however has been different, as, during breakfast we watched utterly fascinated, those first attempts at flight, together with a variety of landings! We’d strung a cable across to assist, and all seemed grateful, but the force of some attempted landings proved sufficient to catapult other already settled chicks back into the air again. But once airborne, the aerobatic display, despite occasional misjudgements, was quite incredible, and all the time the parents were just everywhere, encouraging, correcting, warning and feeding – we just couldn’t take our eyes off, so other work suffered. But in watching this display, I was necessarily reminded of the words of Jesus in Matthew 6, who was probably at the time watching something similar, as he warned those around him against worry, saying: “Look at the birds; they neither sow nor reap nor do they store food in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” And then he asked “Are you not much more valuable than they?” And similarly, later in Matthew’s Gospel he compared his love and concern for the people of Jerusalem with that of a bird for her chicks. So two great lessons Jesus taught from his watching the behaviour of birds; that god cares deeply for each one of us and longs for us to acknowledge him. Helping your garden grow Most plants appreciate a feed to stock up on essential nutrients for strong, healthy growth and we believe that natural nourishment is best. Everyone should be aware of the benefits of homemade compost, but what other natural options are available? Here are five of the best… Nettles The much-maligned nettle is actually one of the garden’s star performers. Not only can it be eaten (nettle risotto is a favourite) and made into a tea or beer, but it can also be used to make a free plant food. Simply pick a load of young spring leaves and stuff them into a lidded bucket, scrunching them as you go (warning: gloves are essential for this task). Cover with water, put the lid on the bucket and wait a few weeks. After this time the liquid will start to smell rather unpleasant, but that pong also means it’s ready to be siphoned into a watering can (diluted by up to 10 parts water to one part nettle juice) and sprinkled over grateful plants.

Seaweed The benefits of seaweed for the garden are so great that many companies bottle it and sell it as a natural fertiliser. But anyone living close to a ‘weedy stretch of coast can help themselves to that goodness for free. The best way to use seaweed is as plant mulch: it will provide instant moisture for the plants and slowly enrich the soil with a range of nutrients. Build up the layers and

not only will it suppress garden weeds, but the salt will help fend off cowardly slugs and snails.

Squash pits and bean trenches Among the greediest and thirstiest plants in the vegetable patch are squash, courgettes and runner beans. As their fruits start growing they’ll be in constant demand for water and crave as much goodness as you can muster. A great way to prepare in advance for their ferocious appetites is to dig a pit or trench and fill it with vegetable scraps. To do this, simply dig a hole a few months in advance of where you’ll plant your veg and over the coming

weeks fill it with unwanted vegetable scraps—anything from potato and carrot peelings to flower and vegetable stalks pulled from your plot. Chop the scraps up with a spade as you go along and when your hole is beginning to fill nicely top it up with a mix of soil and compost. Aim to complete this task a month before planting and, by the time the roots have bedded in, the scraps will have started decomposing, slowly releasing water along with their nutrients to the benefit of your squash and bean harvests.

Wood ash Anyone with a wood burning fire will have a source of nutrients regularly filling their ashtray, and although the nutrient levels are low it’s all free so well worth recycling. The main drop of goodness leaching from ash is potassium, which plants love, so mixing it in with your compost will give it a nutrient boost. It can also be used as mulch (but avoid using it on acid-loving plants, such as raspberries). Timid slugs often think twice about traversing its dry surface and it will also slowly help with soil condition as it works its way into the ground.

Raising your garden Raised bed gardening is an advantageous way of growing plants and, in particular, vegetables. The general idea is that plants grown in a deep container that sits on the earth will be insulated from the chill of the ground, retaining warmth for longer, thus creating favourable growing conditions for your veggies. It’s a technique born from traditional permaculture methods designed to maximise cropping; plants are also sown closer together in raised bed gardening, helping create a tight canopy to inhibit weeds, and it also means you are not reliant on the native soil in your garden. In theory, you could build and fill a bed for plants that thrive in alkaline soil and construct a separate bed for those that prefer to nestle down in soil more acidic. For those less inclined to DIY, raised beds can be bought in kit form, with a minimal amount of construction required before you are up, running and ready to plant. For those that like to get stuck into a rewarding garden project, here’s one type to consider..... BRICK WALLED RAISED BEDS 1. Mark out the designated area using stakes and string. 2. For a strong and secure bed wall, put down a hardcore base approx 10 cm deep before laying your bricks. 3. If you plan to construct your brick raised bed on concrete or an existing patio, leave the odd gap between brick joints to provide drainage. Cover the holes with mesh to stop them clogging. FILLING YOUR RAISED BED To aid drainage, first lay an 8 cm layer of gravel or stones, on top of which lay a weed inhibiting membrane. Fill your bed with topsoil. If you can, avoid filling with soil sourced from elsewhere in the garden to prevent any weed contamination. Remember to add a generous amount of well rotten manure, and dig over the area thoroughly before planting.

Mortgage lending up in short term

The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) estimates that gross mortgage lending reached £20.1 billion in May. This is a 12% increase on both April last month and on May last year, in which £17.9 billion was advanced. The CML’s buy-to-let forecast for 2017 and 2018 has been revised down from previous expectations at the end of last year, reflecting tax and prudential burdens in the housing and mortgage markets. The CML now expects buy-to-let lending of £35 billion in 2017 and £33 billion in 2018, a decrease from £38 billion in each year, forecast in December last year. Commenting on market conditions, CML director general Paul Smee said: “Remortgage activity and first-time buyers continue to drive lending this year. Looking ahead, we expect to see this trend continue, but not as strongly, as the factors supporting lending are blunted by less favourable economic conditions. “Buy-to-let had a weak start to 2017, and the sector’s contribution to overall net mortgage lending has fallen considerably over the last year. “While falling mortgage interest rates have helped support borrowing, tax and prudential measures are exerting pressure on the buy-to-let market. Following the distortion of the stamp duty change on second properties last year, we expected a slight recovery in lending levels. However, this has not materialised, and we therefore have lowered our forecast for buy-to-let lending this year and next. “This re-emphasises the case for avoiding further changes to the tax and regulatory framework until the effect of these already in train have been properly assessed.”

Make that bathroom floor sparkle Stop labouring over scrubbing your floor. Here’s how to clean the floor faster, smarter and better. Skip the clunky vacuum. Save time by keeping the smallest broom you can find in your linen closet. Do a quick sweep of the edges of the room sweeping dirt toward the centre. Wipe up the dirt with some wet toilet paper. Skip the inconvenience of storing and filling of bucket, instead, get smart. Mix a cleaner up right in the sink. Use a quarter cup of vinegar, one tablespoon of dish soap and 2 gallons of water. Use your rag to wipe down the floor ringing it out thoroughly each time. Excess water only creates more of a mess and can actually damage some types of flooring. The secret to a bathroom floor that sparkles, hand dry it or use your foot. Use a nice big cloth an old towel will do. Throw it on the floor then manoeuvre it section by section until the floor is totally dry. Not only will your floor shine but you’ll be able to walk on it right away. Plus, it’s a work out. Certain floors may require special care and always be sure to use a cleaner that is safe for your floor.

Leisure This is a week where finances and domestic matters come under close scrutiny but in ways that excite and intrigue rather than cause concern. Some level of home or family-related expense is very likely but this shouldn’t be coming as a surprise. Comfort and harmony can be brought to your domestic set-up, whether this involves decorating, new furniture or a complete house move!

However you choose to convey yourself this week, your words will be your own and come from the very depths of your heart. There’s something exceptionally authentic about how you make thoughts and feelings known and this level of honesty can only make someone’s response equally as authentic. Don’t rehearse what’s on your mind or in your heart. Just let it emerge.

You might underestimate how unusual or even radical your ideas are to certain others so be willing to give them a chance to absorb them properly before pushing anything forward. You can see clearly what needs to change in a situation or arrangement and its others’ reluctance to consider let alone support this that could be this week’s main hurdle. You can overcome it with patience and gently applied effort.

You might perceive a romantic or possibly a financial matter as something that doesn’t need sharing or discussing with others. You have plenty to consider in your own way and the sky implies that, this week, you’re wise to keep your thoughts to yourself. You know you have others’ input if you want it but before you can seek or receive it, you need to be clearer in your own mind about what – or whom – you’re committing yourself to.

You have at least one person whom you look to for inspiration and motivation. We all have at least one such person and the coming week could see you focused intently on what someone else has achieved in a particular area. This is not necessarily being done out of jealousy but because you want to achieve something similar. If they did it or can do it, then so can you. That’s not an unrealistic way to be thinking this week and it’s that attitude and approach that will bring success.

Something connected with your career or professional world could require you to summon confidence and courage but the really good news is, you’re likely to find plenty of both within you. Whether you intend to impress powers-that-be or show colleagues what you’re made of, you’re superbly placed to turn a few heads in the workplace and have people talking about you for all the right reasons. It is very possible to make your mark professionally if you want to.

You might be focused intently on what you believe to be in short supply this week, especially where financial matters are concerned but if any alarm bells are ringing, then that’s a sure sign that you’re not looking at a bigger, overall and very positive picture. Opportunities connected with your career offer a chance to boost your income and if you’re willing to allow these and other options to present themselves to you, then they will.

An unexpected expense could present itself and a certain lesson could be learned from it. As much as you might have done all the groundwork to avoid being caught out in such a way, there is probably little you could have done to foresee this necessary outlay. However, you’re a very resourceful so-and-so and by applying your Scorpio acumen, you can overcome this money-related hurdle with surprising ease this week.

It might take some time for the effects of the Full Moon in your sign to wane and you’ll likely to have plenty to consider where a family or domestic dilemma is concerned. However, rather than resent what has been brought into the open to be faced and resolved, welcome it. It’s in your and at least one other person’s best interests to accept a shared situation and resolve.

Rather than roll your eyes wearily and dread where a certain conversation or exchange with a particular person might end up, welcome the chance to clear the air. There’s something you need to know that requires someone’s explanation and there’s something someone else needs to know that requires your input. Together, you and they can get a certain matter resolved and base a new beginning on facts rather than assumptions.

A decision surrounding whether you should stay or whether you should go could raise its head this week. This might surround your involvement with a group or collaborative effort or it could involve a friend. What comes to light or transpires could cause you to reassess your position if remaining involved or supportive in ways you have been really is in your and their best interests.

You could be on the receiving end of a pat on the back career-wise and as much as you understand why someone feels compelled to praise your efforts, you can’t help but think it’s a bit premature. You might still see issues that need resolving before you can accept praise but if someone else thinks differently, then smile and welcome it. It’s deserved and a clear sign of someone’s faith in you.

The Lodger by C.L.Taylor.

“My world becomes dark and loud as I’m tossed, turned and twisted. Over and over I turn, my breath burning in my lungs, the river roaring in my ears.” Having read a couple of books by Cally which I have reviewed recently, I must admit that I’ve got a soft spot for dysfunctional people and families with unstable and unhappy relationships. It mirrors the lives of many of us. Some of us don’t seem to get it right with the happy ever after bit. When 25 year old Joe is introduced you get the feeling that he is infatuated with

Laura, the protagonist. Joe is Ian’s brother, labelled the lady-killer, vivacious, outspoken and the look before you leap type, whatever that means! So, is he presented as a good guy or a bad one? Find out. Whilst at work, Laura receives an email from Ian, an old flame from her university days asking if she can put up Joe for a couple of nights because he has just been kicked out of his flat. The “chemistry wasn’t there” between Ian and Laura but the pair have remained on close terms. Laura has two spare rooms but seems reluctant to put him up after recent traumatic events which focus the story on the tragic death of Steven, her fiance. “The river snatched him from me and there was nothing I could do but watch as the current carried him away.” Be warned: never take things at face value with Cally. When she develops her characters we may see polar opposites: good and evil as she slowly reveals the darker

side of the villains. Significantly, the story begins on the anniversary of Steven’s death. A group of them: Ian, his wife, Sarah, brother Joe, Laura and fiance were holidaying in Wales, ready to have a picnic by the river when he drowned. Steven couldn’t swim, although the others still encouraged him to get into the water. Then the tragedy happened. They met in Steven’s favourite pub to remember him. Laura had been suffering flashbacks of the event which seemed to have paralysed her. Ian tried to console her by telling her that they were all responsible for his death. Too many memories “locked within its walls” and before long Laura made the painful decision to sell the house. We soon become aware of Laura’s paranoia that she is being watched: “I don’t feel right and I can’t shake the feeling that something, or someone is in my house” Returning from work one day, she opens the door and calls out, convinced that someone is inside. When she sees half

a dozen cds scattered on the floor she is reminded of one of Steven’s habits and panics. When she is more rational, she realises that she has been burgled so she makes the decision to let Joe stay with her to make her feel safe. In her paranoia she sees Joe wearing Steven’s dressing gown and this freaks her out. In her distress, her body ragdoll limp, threw her off balance, knowing that she had given away all of Steven’s clothing to a charity shop months ago.

Hampstead

21

In Diane Keaton’s latest film, Hampstead, she stars as Emily, an American widow living in London’s Hampstead Heath who, betrayed by her late husband and in deep financial debt, befriends Donald, a man living in a self-made shack, who inspires her to rethink her whole life. It’s a story about a woman who takes back control and rebuilds her life at an older age, deciding not to settle for fake friends or controlling men. Speaking about her role, Diane said: “I do identify with Emily in a sense of being a coward. She’s kind of a coward in the beginning. She doesn’t tell the truth. It’s easy for me to identify with her problems because they’re the problems that I feel I also have. She’s a modified version of me. “She’s as much a victim of her life as Donald is. She’s in trouble too. She’s not able to pay her rent, she was betrayed by her husband, she has a difficult time even with her son because he’s making her feel inadequate. That one incident when they meet opens up a whole new world. It’s a really good story about that certain point in your life when you feel that nothing will ever change for you, that you’re stuck forever, that you’re older and you don’t really have any use in this world. But then you address those issues you didn’t want to address and stop being afraid.” Out on general release from June 23rd

OUR PICK OF THIS WEEK’S MUST-SEE FILM & TV FILM OF THE WEEK

Life Of Pi (2012)

Channel 4, Sat 1st July 8pm to 10:25pm

Directed by Ang Lee, Life Of Pi is a survival story of a boy and a tiger on a life boat at sea. The story is shared with a Canadian writer visiting Piscine Molitor Patel, who recounts his life story, starting in Pondicherry as the son of zookeepers. He embarks on the long journey to Canada to start a new life with his parents. Having now sold the zoo they board a ship only for tragedy to strike

when a ferocious storm hits them and sinks the ship. Pi, the sole human survior but he is not alone. Adrift in the Pacific ocean he shares his lifeboat with the zoo’s Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. The two eventually form an understanding and close connection despite being obvious adversaries at first. Over the months that follow their survival depends on this mutual connection.

More than 150 years after Charles Darwin concieved his world-changing theory of evolution on the remote archipelago this series explains how life continues to evolve in biological isolation. David Attenborough at the age of 86 continues to break new ground with his career in wildlife broadcasting. This year he heads back to the Galapagos islands, a collection of volcanic islands in the pacific well known for it´s extraordinary wildlife. He manages to capture stunning sights from the rarest creature in the world, the huge Pinta Island tortoise, Lonesome George, who died last year to the first ever shots of the pink iguana.

After the one-off show last year as part of Stand Up To Cancer and last weeks Celebrity Special, this week sees the return of this popular 90´s show for a full series. Presented by Richard Ayoade, following in the footsteps of Richard O´Brien, in his usual, some might say better, fabulous deadpan style. The show is pure, classic, Crystal Maze with the same look and feel of the original, it even retains the same theme music. With the familiar Skill, mystery, physical and mental challenges to play through in the usual Aztec, Medieval, Industrial and Future zones. Culminating in the final test within the Crystal Dome.

Double check your beauticians

Over the past couple of years, doctors and campaigners have reported an increase in ‘bogus’ nurses and amateur beauticians performing unsafe treatments from their kitchen or lounge. As a result, they say more patients are suffering from parts of their lips becoming lumpy or disproportionate in size, infections, ulceration or necrosis (when the lip tissue dies and goes black). Anyone can buy hyaluronic acid gel and inject it into someone’s lips. This is because there are no laws in the UK that regulate people who carry out non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as lip fillers. The Professional Standards Authority runs a Government-backed programme called Accredited Registers which lists trusty professionals that treat their patients safely. Here are 8 ways to ensure that everyone is in safe hands: 1. Everyone should always chooses a safe practitioner from one of the Accredited Registers - http://www.professionalstandards.org.uk/find-practitioners/practitioner/non-surgical-cosmetic-practitioners 2. Professionals should ask for the patients' age, full medical history and discuss all risks before agreeing an injection. 3. Nobody should pressure a patient into having lip fillers done there and then. Patients need time before making a decision. 4. Ask for copies of before and after photographs. It’s a good idea to have photos of the patients smiling and frowning, too. 5. Patients should note down which hyaluronic acid product is being used for their lip fillers as well as the clinician’s name. 6. Patients should ask the person giving them lip fillers to show them the hyaluronic acid in its unopened packaging, before injection. 7. There should be no problems in booking a follow up and asking about treatment of any complications, if they occur. 8. Never agree to have lip fillers done at homes, at ‘parties’ or exhibitions, or in places that aren’t clean & clinical.

Burberry bespoke – just for you If there is one thing that can complete your personality with a lasting touch, it is the fragrance that you choose to wear. While there are several labels out there, offering you the very best when it comes to perfumes, hardly any can match up the Burberry reverie. The British brand recently launched an exciting new ensemble that includes seven new fragrances for the many shades in you. Christened as the Burberry Bespoke, the novel collection takes inspiration from the British artistry, elements, and landscapes. Each of the unique scents is conjured by master perfumer – Francis Kurkdjian alongside the creative direction of Christopher Bailey. Each fragrance caters to a different sensibility as you can see below: 1. Hide Tide: A renewed scent made from marine notes with underlying tones of jasmine and oak moss. This one captures the “the contrasts and scenery of the sea coast; rocks and

blue water under the vigorous marine tide.” 2. Tudor Rose: An iridescent rose fragrance that combines hints of the Bulgarian Damask Rose and May rose in a fresh base of patchouli and ambergris, presenting a mark of serenity and strength. 3. Amber Heath: A modern scent that merges flavors of amber, vanilla, patchouli and ambergris in a bottle. This one offers an ode to the romantic atmospheric interpretation of the golden light of sunset over a courtyard in bloom. 4. Wild Thistle: A floral fragrance made from green leaves, galbanum oil, flowers, and geranium, to represent the spacious green area under the heat of the Scottish sunshine. 5. Hawthorn Bloom: A delicate scent composed of Iris and booming Yorkshire spring with fresh undertones of orris root, violet, patchouli, musk, and jasmine. 6. Antique Oak: This one takes inspiration from the British shipyards and is made from accords of oud, leather, earthy and refined safflower and papyrus. 7. Garden Roses: Representing the classic English roses set in a Bloomsbury garden, this one is a unique blend of

Prostate cancer – what to look out for

It’s the most common cancer for men in the UK, so make sure you know the first warning sign of prostate cancer. One in seven British men currently suffers from prostate cancer and around 47,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with the disease every year. Unfortunately many men don’t experience any symptoms with this type of cancer, so it can be very hard to detect. But men should beware of problems associated with urination, because this is typically the first warning sign. For example, you might need to go to the toilet more or find it increasingly difficult to empty your bladder. Other symptoms can include blood in the urine and semen, pain in the hips, pelvis spine or upper legs and pain or discomfort during ejaculation. If you’re worried about this condition, your GP can perform a simple blood test and a prostate examination to thoroughly investigate. Prostate cancer only begins to show symptoms when the tumour has grown large enough to put pressure on the urethra. Because prostate cancer is hard to spot, it’s extremely important for men to do whatever they can to avoid developing the disease. Health experts often emphasise the importance of a healthy lifestyle in reducing risk of cancer. A recent breakthrough revealed that ditching meat could dramatically slash your odds of developing the cancer by more than a third. The study found that following a vegan diet – which means cutting out meat, dairy and eggs – can slash your likelihood of developing prostate cancer by a whopping 35%. Dr Panagiota Mitrou, director of research funding at World Cancer Research Fund, said: “With prostate cancer being the most common cancer in men in the UK, prevention is key if we are to see a decrease in the number of men developing the disease. “This exciting research has, for the first time, helped fill some vital gaps in our knowledge about eating patterns and the prevention of prostate cancer and could pave the way for future research. “Although these results are exciting, more studies are needed to demonstrate the strength of the link between a vegan diet and reducing the risk of prostate cancer.”

The perfect breakfast in bed Romantic gestures don’t come more classic than breakfast in bed. It’s a subtle yet thoughtful way to show you care and really spoil the one you love. Below is a fool proof guide to pulling off this relaxed, romantic meal. Get the timing right Keeping your breakfast in bed plans a surprise will make

the experience all the more special. Be sure to give yourself at least an hour to get things ready. While your partner is sound asleep, all cosy and comfortable in bed, sneak off to the kitchen — have your excuse prepared in case they stir early! If possible, try to choose a menu that you can prepare in advance. Pancakes are the perfect choice for breakfast in bed be-

cause if you’re very sneaky, you can prepare the batter ahead of time. This means on the day all you’ll have to do is cook them. Remember the important thing about this gesture is spending time with your loved one. You don’t want to spend hours slaving away in the kitchen, only to feel too frazzled to enjoy the meal you serve up. It’s all in the gesture. Be sure to check beverages are only 3/4 full to avoid potential spillages, and never underestimate the importance of a sturdy tray. It’s the little things that count Small touches can be the most romantic. Why not bring in their favourite magazine/newspaper, or a crossword to complete as they eat? Alternatively, a well-placed flower, card or small gift makes a nice extra touch. You could also put on their favourite radio station or album to contribute to the relaxing mood. If you’re feeling really mushy, you can look up instructions on creating heart-shaped versions of just about any breakfast food, from bacon and eggs to French toast.

Stir together tomatoes, water, garlic, and stuffing mix in a large bowl; set aside to soften. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the chicken, then sprinkle with the Italian seasoning. Preparation Time – 25 minutes. Ready after 4 hours & 25 minutes.

Unbeatable at home No other team has yet to equal Brentford FC’s feat of winning all of its home League games in a single season in 1929-30. In fact, only five other clubs have actually achieved this feat of recording victories in every home game they played in a complete campaign of League football - and all did so before the Great War… long before the Football League was extended to 92 clubs: The other six teams with unblemished home records are: Sunderland (13 games; First Division, 1891–92) Liverpool (14 games; Second Division, 1893–94) Bury (15 games; Second Division, 1894–95) Sheffield Wednesday (17 games; Second Division, 1899–1900) Small Heath (17 games; Second Division, 1902– 03) Brentford (21 games; Third Division south, 1929-30)

Self drive cars – an investigation Are you ready to give up the steering wheel? Self-driving cars are getting ready to hit the highway. But where are these cars and what do they actually do? Here are some of the leading models. Around the world laws are slowly being changed to allow self-driving vehicles on the roads. It may take a decade or more of research, trials and a lot longer for some customers to accept the concept, but slowly and surely we’ll be sharing the roads with more self-driving vehicles.

1. Audi A7 and AQ5 SUV Audi wanted to make a big impression at the spring Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, so took an A7 concept car and set it off from San Francisco and telling it to head to Vegas. Two days and 550 miles later, the car arrived without a scratch, navigating the highways of California and the boulevards of Las Vegas with equal aplomb. There was someone in the passenger seat at all times, as per the law, but they didn’t have to intervene once. There’s also a special Audi AQ5 SUV, modified by automated driving systems specialist Delphi, currently being tested. Its most ambitious drive was from San Francisco to New York — over 3,500 miles — to demonstrate various systems including Delphi’s Traffic Jam Assist, Automated Highway Pilot, Automated Urban Pilot, plus Automated Parking and Valet. It managed the journey with 99 per cent automated driving.

truck for the haulage industry. On test in Nevada, it could one day help the freight industry to keep on trucking day and night, but there’s a long way to go before we leave computers in charge of 20 tonnes of screaming metal on a public road. However, don’t worry too much about being replaced at the wheel yet. These vehicles don’t drive in heavy rain or snow, which could confuse the sensors. They also need well-painted roads to drive on, so they can see the lane markers. It’ll be some time before there’s no need for a steering wheel. roads since 2009. The fleet have accumulated two million miles of driving the cars have been involved in 13 accidents, none of them the fault of the automated systems. But, you might be wondering why an internet company like Google is spearheading such innovation? The company plans to launch the car systems between 2017 and 2020, to add to its massive search engine, Android smartphone technology and other business innovations. Going one step further, it is also developing a totally autonomous car with no steering wheel or pedals. Currently designed as a pod-like micro car, it could become a common sight on urban streets when laws allow, going to collect family members without the need for a parent, picking up a prescription, shopping or meal from a drive through, without you having to leave home. Surely, that’s a future worth imagining? 3. Daimler Freightliner Finally, moving on to the big stuff, Daimler is currently testing its Freightliner Inspiration, a concept self-driving

2. Google’s self-driving cars The advantages of a self-driving car are many fold; computers never get tired, their sensors are better than our eyes, they can make decisions faster and can drive more efficiently. Self-driving cars can also travel closer together, reducing congestion and allowing traffic to flow more freely. Google has a whole fleet of self-driving cars — mostly Lexus RX450 SUV models — that have been on the
