Online reputation boost

SOCIAL NETWORKS play an essential part in how successful business can become nowadays, especially in the hospitality industry. However, they are not always shown in their best light. For this reason, the Association of Hotel and Catering Enterprisers in the province of Almeria

has sought the way to help their members improve their online reputation. ASHAL president, Diego García, has entered into an agreement with a group from Cadiz ‘Defiende tu honor’ which works to help their mem-

bers get rid of unwanted remarks online and also enhance their

brand image. ASHAL members can now feel reassured and supported, receive advice about how to deal with offensive comments online and take legal action if need be.

SENT DOWN: The driver was sentenced at the Criminal Court of Almeria.

Jailed over high speed pursuit A COURT in Almeria has sentenced a man found guilty of attempting to escape a police checkpoint at 130 kilometres per hour to two years and three months in prison. The Fifth Criminal Court heard the defendant was driving on Calle Salud in the La Chanca area of Almeria City when a National Police patrol tried to pull him over.

The driver ignored their requests to stop the car and instead fled, reaching speeds of more than 130 kilometres per hour. Prosecutors also claimed the driver attempted to run two police officers over in the course of the chase. The officers had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. They added the defendant almost crashed into a police car and that a Na-

tional Police motorcycle ended up colliding into another vehicle. The motorcycle rider had to go off work for 20 days after falling off his vehicle in the crash. The court ordered the defendant to pay out €1,200 in compensation to the motorcycle rider. He will also be required to do 60 days of community service and he is banned from driving for six years and three months.

Homes funding A NEW housing complex planned for Mojacar has received backing from an Israeli investment fund. The estate, located by the town’s Las Ventanicas beach near Tito’s leisure area, is set to feature 96 homes, 95 garages and 91 storage rooms and a number of shops. The council-approved project has been given a cash injection from the Israeli investment group Adar Capital Partners. The Cantal Homes project was previ-

ously set back due to the financial crisis and property market crash of 2008. Adar Capital now has a 28 per cent stake in Neinor Homes, the company behind the project. The firm now plans to build around 1,000 homes across Almeria, the Costa del Sol and Cadiz Province. The Mojacar estate is due to be built on a 15,000-square-metre plot of land. The estate will share the plot with the Indamar complex which was built in the 1980’s.

RULING UPHELD: The High Court in Andalucia ruled in favour of the doctor.

Doctor ruling ANDALUCIA’S High Court has ruled that a doctor working at a centre for the elderly was dismissed unfairly after working there for almost a decade. The Social Chamber of the Higher Court of Justice of Andalucia upheld a previous decision taken by a social court in Almeria. The ruling could affect up to 50 workers in Almeria in a similar situation, according to a trade union. Both courts ruled the Junta de Andalucia’s Equality and Social Policies Department should have offered to relocate the staff member before she was dismissed in 2017. The courts also ruled the Junta must either reinstate the doctor, cover the costs of lost wages or compensate her to the tune of €35,400. The Independent Trade Union of Officials (CSI-F) helped represent the worker in court. They said the ruling vindicated complaints they had made about the temporary contract regime in Andalucia.

“The ruling once again shows the excessively high temporary employment rate among the Junta de Andalucia and the precariousness and mismanagement of workers by the authority,” the union said. The health worker was on an indefinite, non-permanent contract while at the Junta-run centre which she first joined in February 2008. She worked her first stint there until September 2009, being placed on a second contract in October of that year. The doctor was employed on a temporary contract which stated she could be replaced if a long-term staff member was found. She was let go from the centre in May 2017 and left in June. The court ruled the decision to dismiss the worker violated Article 70 of the Basic Statute of Public Employees. Rules state anyone working on a temporary contract in the public sector must be placed on a permanent one after three years.

Marijuana gang busted THE National Police has arrested five family members in Almeria who grew and sold marihuana, as well as other narcotic substances. The family had different pick up points at three houses in the neighbourhood of Los Almendros. The police operation ‘Patios’ began at the start of the year following contact made by local neighbours who noticed the steady flow of people in and out of the house. There was also a strong marihuana smell in the vicinity and constant power cuts in the

area. The three houses had been fitted with sophisticated electrical systems that provided power, heat and constant air, creating the perfect environment to grow cannabis. Over 20 National Police officers took part in the raid and arrests during which 155 plants were confiscated. Moreover, 873 grammes of cannabis heads were seized together with 1.5 kilos of hashish, €31,282 in cash, 20 power transformers, 34 600 watt bulbs, 20 halogen lamps, five air extractors, five air filters, two precision scales and a 12mm hunting rifle.

The charity-run schools are set to be open from July until August on the back of grants from the Junta de Andalucia. Jose Maria Martin, the Junta’s equality envoy to Almeria, said the centres would put on activities which focused on imagination and creativity. “The Junta is committed to feeding these youngsters, many of whom are in a vulnerable situation once schools break up for the summer,” Martin said. The schools are due to open in the Pescaderia-La Chanca, Quemadero-Fuentecica, El Puche and Los Almendros areas of Almeria City. The rest are planned for Albox, Berja, Cuevas del Almanzora, El Ejido and Roquetas de Mar. The centres are set to lay on breakfast, lunch

Seven bikes, seven days, 700 miles Bikers growing old disgracefully, part 6 By Mark Porter WE were quite happily following traffic past Fines, Olula del Rio, Purchena, thinking what a spiffing day we’ve had and how the open fire cooked chicken would taste after the days ride when I saw in the dis-

tance the unmistakable look of a hi-viz jacket on the side of the road by Armuña. Yep, the Rossi and Marquez wanna-be’s were getting the treatment. As I approached, I was already getting my excuses and grovelling ready when the

officer put his hands behind his back to indicate that he wasn’t going to stop us even though it was obvious we were together. We could just see BMW guy blowing into a breathalyser. I’ve told them once. I’ve told them a thousand times. Watch your speed in built up areas, even if the roads are empty. The Guardia Trafico like nothing better than to stop and fine speeders around towns and villages. And so they should. Especially when the limit is 60kph and you’re doing a lot more. As we rolled back into the hotel car park, there

was a buzz of adrenaline floating around. That feeling you get when everything goes well and we all made it back safely. As it turned out, they were stopped by ‘normal’ Guardia Civil and not the Trafico. Either they heard them approaching or it was just a routine stop. Anyway, after breathalysing BMW guy, and getting a 0.000 reading on the machine, they decided that alcohol wasn’t going to be in the other guy’s system and didn’t bother wasting another single-use mouth piece on the

analyser. That’s one thing we DON’T do. Not a sip, not a drop when we ride. We have been riding and driving long enough to know the consequences. Little did the Guardia know that they breathalysed someone who has been a tee-totaller for over 20 years. They didn’t even ask them for their documents which was lucky because the second guy didn’t bring any with him! He’d left it at his house in the UK. All he had were copies

which his wife emailed to me and which my wife printed. Well we have to involve the spouses don’t we, and who would pack our clothes? By the way, mine forgot my toothbrush. Anyway, It’s not like it was his first biking or driving trip abroad and he didn’t know that you needed to bring your documents at all times. Maybe all the excitement got to him or something. More likely his wife forgot to pack it for him. How silly of her.

Great ball of fire ASTRONOMERS working in Almeria have spotted the flaming debris of an outer space object entering the Earth’s atmosphere over parts of Andalucia. A Calar Alto observatory run by the University of Huelva filmed and photographed the ‘fireball’ as it flew over the provinces of Malaga, Sevilla and Cordoba last Monday morning. Scientists working at the Almeria site were joined by colleagues in La Hita, in Toledo and La Sagra in Granada in recording the find. They are all part of the SMART project, a University of Huelva initiative which documents finds from out of space. Professor Jose Maria Mediedo, the principle investigator at the Calar Alto observatory, has been investigating the sighting. The astronomer said the ‘fireball’ effect, which left traces of light in the sky momentarily after the passing of the debris, was caused as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere. The University of Huelva academic’s work found that it was travelling at around 118,000 kilometres per hour. It was flying around 99 kilometres above ground level as it passed over Malaga Province before crossing over the provinces of Sevilla and Cordoba and falling to about 31 kilometres.

Celebrating the patron saint THE Cuartillas neighbourhood in Mojácar recently held its own eagerly anticipated fiesta in honour of its patron saint San Antonio. After 70 forgotten years, the festival was revived three years ago and the celebrations continue to grow each year. The festival opened with a band and open air dance followed by a mass in honour of San Antonio. Specially decorated bread rolls, made with the age old traditional recipe, were blessed and given out to the parishioners. The opening speech was

The neighbourhood association, Asociación de Vecinos de Cuartillas, was established to organise the event as well as many other events that are due to take place during the year. With a population of just

over 100 people, the area is going through a process of rejuvenation. The children and grandchildren of long-term residents are bringing the area to life again. They want to focus on restoring the old chapel and the original image of San Antonio. However, the ancient chapel of San Antonio is now located on private land and the original image of San Antonio is now in Barcelona in private hands. So there is a task ahead to be able to restore both of these.

Will she, won’t she AS we wandered away from the Virtual Roller Coaster Room at Cowboy Land in the company of those who had partaken of its delights I asked the inevitable question: ‘Do you feel the G-force?’ Obviously this thought had never occurred to them, and the answer was a non-encouraging ‘Mmm, don’t really know.’ Shortly followed by ‘Why don’t you have a go?’ ‘Because I might faint, but I am thinking about it,’ I answered. I thought about it while we watched the cowboy show and the Can-Can girls. I thought about it a bit more as we wandered through the zoo, and continued cogitating while we lunched on burger and chips. I was strapped in and 3-D headsetted, and I was off! My commentary was something like ‘OOOOOO! Weeee! Wahaaay! Oh my God! Oh my good God! I’m upside down!’ The ride drew to a close and parked. I was preparing to dismount when the hand of a ghost lightly touched my shoulder, and I nearly fell out of my skin with fright! BETWEEN late June and early September is a peak time for burglaries as people head off on their holidays. So, if you’re heading away be sure to take the following top tips into account to keep your home more secure. Before you depart on holiday, remember to cancel any regular deliveries that would sit on your doorstep or in your post box and signal that no one is at home. Alternatively, you could ask a neighbour or a good friend to visit your house and collect your post. They could also open and close some curtains if you trust them to have a key. If you’d rather not have friends or family entering your home, make every attempt to give the impression that someone is at home. Buy some timer lights to turn a few lamps on and off during the day and night. Be sure that all your windows and doors are tightly shut and all

If you’re already on your holiday, try to do the impossible and stay off social networks. Posting your ever y movement online, particularly if you don’t have strict privacy settings will

mean that would-be thieves can see what you’re up to and just how far away from your home you are. Remember, being burgled doesn’t just involve the loss of physical belongings, it can also result in worry and cause you to feel insecure in your own home. So do what you can to protect your premises.

Toxic takeaways THOSE who eat a lot of fast food are exposed to up to 40 per cent higher levels of potentially harmful chemicals. According to research, fast food lovers are at greater risk from phthalates, which is a group of chemicals used to soften and increase the flexibility of plastic and vinyl, often found in fast food packaging. The chemicals have already been banned from children’s toys and products such as teething rings and soft books because of their potential toxic effects; they are known to disrupt hormones and have been linked to asthma and autism. Researchers at the Milken Institute

School of Public Health in the United States reported that ‘people who ate the most fast food

had phthalate levels that were as much as 40 per cent higher than those who didn’t.’

MY mum was always a keen cook. With four children to feed, and my dad who was a builder and always hungr y, ever ything was always made from scratch. I was often there in the kitchen helping her, especially when she was baking. As well as learning how to make cakes and puddings, pastry also featured regularly on the dinner table. Delicious pies, savoury and sweet were one of my favourite things to help make. I would stand for ages, cutting up butter and lard into tiny pieces and then dutifully rubbing them into the flour until they resembled breadcrumbs. Mum let me roll it out and she would place it in the pie dish. I remember wishing she would hurr y up and put the top on, so I could do my party trick and pleat the edges into a perfect pattern, adding little pastr y leaves to the top for a fruit pie, or something that almost resembled a cow for the

Do smoothies make you fat? MANY of us have heard smoothies are an easy way to get some of your daily nutrients, and that is true - if you make them correctly. We all have our own preferences when it comes to blending up ingredients: a tablespoon of almond butter, a sprinkle of chia seeds, a handful of spinach. However, your deliciously fruity drink could be making you fat. Fruit actually contains sugar, and although it’s perfectly fine to add some fruit to your blended beverage, too much can cause you to gain weight.

HEALTHY? Too much fruit means too much sugar. According to nutritionist, Gabriel Mason, ‘the perfect smoothie is 50 per cent liquid, ie your base, and 25 per cent fruit and 25 per cent veg.’ Further, nuts and dates are a great contribution to a smoothie, but make sure to take out half a piece of fruit to counterbalance it. It seems a lot of people put too many ingredients into their home-made smoothies, and experts are saying there truly can be too much of a good thing.

Going ‘Scottish’ IT may have been advice given to you on many occasions, but taking a cold shower can actually of fer you surprising health benefits. Often referred to as t h e ‘ S c o t t i s h S h o w e r, ’ this burst of cold water in the morning can increase alertness. Even though the thought of this may horrify you, the shock of the cold water forces you to breathe more

deeply which, in tur n, increases your overall oxygen intake. It also causes your heart rate to increase which pumps blood more efficiently through your entire body. This improved blood circulation can help to combat some skin problems and boost your overall heart health. It can also lower blood pressure, clear blocked arteries, and improve your immune

system. In addition, one of the most natural ways to maintain your appearance is with cold showers. Hot water can dr y your skin out, whilst cold water will tighten your cuticles and pores, which will prevent them from getting clogged. Cold water can also seal the pores in the skin and scalp too, preventing dirt from getting in.

Scientists claim that mindfulness, a meditation-like technique that is becoming increasingly popular, can help people to tune into the body’s hunger signals. This will result in only eating when you need to and prevent piling on the pounds. Mindfulness has already been credited with a host of health benefits from easing depression to boosting the immune system and a leading British obesity exper t has said it may be the ‘missing link’ in the search

Child obesity concerns PUBLIC HEALTH figures in the UK have revealed that one in 25 children in England aged 10 or 11 are severely obese. Under the UK government’s national child measurement programme, the weight and height of all children in England is measured when they start reception school and when they leave primar y school. Figures showed for children in reception school about one in 40 (15,000 out of 629,000) was classed as severely obese. But by the time they left primary school more than

eight may the mind for an effective weight loss technique. Dutch researchers carried out a series of studies to see if mindfulness stops people from eating excessively. They analysed data on more than 400 people who had undergone regular weigh-ins over two and a half years. It found people who are ‘naturally mindful’ were better able to recognise when they are hungr y meaning their weight fluctuates less than people who are less aware of their body’s signals. Mindfulness involves blocking out distractions, focusing in the present and listening to your body.

one in 25 children (22,000 out of 556,000) were in this category. This is the first time the national child measurement programme data has included the ‘severely obese’ category. The Local Government Association warned that children who are obese are at risk of dying younger due to a range of health problems, including diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Izzi Seccombe, chairwoman of the LGA’s community well-being board, said the UK was now the most obese nation in western Europe.

WORRYING: The number of severely obese children is on the rise.

OUR CHOICE

OUR PICK OF THIS WEEK’S MUST-SEE

The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan

FILM REVIEW PHOTO CREDIT PIXAR

The Incredibles 2

VERY FUNNY: Critics have raved about the second release of The Incredibles.

MANY sequels fail to impress but the second release of ‘The Incredibles’ is an improvement. Critics have described the film as ‘very funny’ and full of humour. The film also has an outstanding soundtrack by Michael Giacchino. This famous American composer has previously won two Oscars for ‘Up’ and more recently for ‘Remind me.’ The sequal sees Elastigirl carrying out a special mission and trying to save the world. Also Mr Incredible becomes a father and has to take care of his three children. Some of the characters are further developed in this version. In particular Jack-Jack and Edna Mode play a greater role in this film than in the last. Both the film’s director Brad Bird and the producer John Walker have suggested that a third film might even be on the cards. In the meantime, if there’s one film you go to watch this year, make sure it’s this film - it’s incredible!

HAITI: Romesh manages to balance comedy and concern in this series. ON Sunday we had the chance to watch comedian Romesh Ranganathan on tour in Haiti. This is the first of a threepar t adventure comically called the The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan. However, Ranganathan isn’t the star of this first episode. Rather his tour

guide, local journalist Jeremy Dupin takes centre stage. Ranganathan and Dupin visit a local music star and attempt to rap to his latest hit. They also meet local residents who believe in voodoo and shamanic possession by spirits. However, the show has a

more serious side as well. The stark situation in Haiti is discussed and there is regular reference to the devastation which was caused in 2010 by an earthquake. The series continues this Sunday at 9pm when Ranganathan will be in Ethiopia, followed by Albania the week after.

ONE TO WATCH

Mad Max beyond Thunderdome WHY not have a blast from the past and settle down to Mad Max beyond the Thunderdrome which will be shown on ITV tonight (Friday). This Sci-fi adventure sequel from 1985 stars Mel Gibson, Tina Turner and Bruce Spence. This film is the third in Mel Gibson's sci-fi series and sees him as a reluctant surrogate father to a lost tribe of youngsters. Gibson is effortlessly charismatic in the lead role as a nomadic warrior who arrives to a cut-throat desert community in search of his stolen vehicle. He makes a deal with a local dictator to get rid of her rival for power. However, the bargain turns sour and he is cast out into the wilderness. The film has no shortage of gladiatorial battles in the thunderdome of the wild city of Bartertown. Directors George Miller and George Ogilvie created some fantastic scenes which keep the action fast paced throughout the film.

Heat stroke DON’T forget during the forthcoming heatwave that the hot pavements can be sore on the feet of your beloved four-legged friend. If you’re taking your pet out for a walk, go early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the hottest times of the day. Also, now might be a good time to give their hair a trim. And if you take them out in the car make sure that there is adequate ventilation and do not leave them alone in a locked car for any length of time. Enjoy your pet but ensure that it is treated as an important member of the family, not pampered but equally, looked after and allowed to live a comfortable life.

by Sandy Shore I WAS taken aback by the appearance of a barman who reminded me much of BBC Radio’s Wilfred Pickles (1904 - 1978). On the other hand, it could have been that the man’s face had the 1940’s and charabanc trips to the seaside written all over it. Television and movie casting directors must have a difficult task. I cannot define it but there are occasions when drama actors chosen for First World War or Second World War parts simply lack the gauntness typical of those generations. Like the barman, some people carry the past into the future very effectively. The bartender would not have seemed out of place in a Workers Playtime audience, the BBC’s morale boosting programme during the Second World War. And what of Yorkshire born Wilfred Pickles. The Yorkshire born raconteur and ex-builder was always accompanied by his wife, Mabel and sidekick Barney.

Feature

6th - 12th July 2018

Best not to know Wilfred, and there’s another name that belongs to that generation, was chosen by the BBC not in spite of Pickles broad Yorkshire accent but because of it. During the 1940’s the crafty krauts were having a field day impersonating the cut-glass accents of BBC presenters, which were easy enough for Germans to copy. But, there was unlikely a German anywhere who could mimic a broad Yorkshire accent like that of Wilfred Pickles. The radio star’s radio programme, Have a Go, ran from 1946 to curtains down in 1967: the end of an era indeed. Pickles catch phrases, ‘what’s on the table, Mabel’ and ‘give them the money, Barney,’ outlived them. The couple’s Have a Go series attracted a weekly audience exceeding 20 million and a mailbag of around 5,000 letters. There were no emails back then,

mind you. Contestants could earn £1/19/11d (€2.20) simply by sharing their secrets. Nothing’s changed; my Wilfred Pickles lookalike is likely host to people with lots of secrets to share for the price of a large beer. Excuse the play on words but it is sobering to think what the stars of yesterday might make of Britain today if they were to return. Once again, the quote from L P Hartley came to mind: ‘The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.’ Nostalgia is a wonderful sentiment but it is painful to think of what the real stars of yester-year would make of Britain today. Workers Playtime introduced us to Charlie Chester, Tony Hancock, Peter Sellers, Terry Thomas, Anne Shelton, and Eve Boswell. Fondly recalled are Dorothy Squires, Arthur English and Arthur Askey, Ken Dodd and Ken Platt.

England march on E N G L A N D w o n a Wo r l d Cup penalty shootout for the first time on a night of h i g h d r a m a i n M o s c o w, edging past Colombia to secure a quarter-final meeting with Sweden on Saturday. Amid a feverish atmosphere inside Spartak Stadium, Eric Dier scored the winning penalty after Jordan Pickford’s brilliant save from Carlos Bacca. Manager Gareth Southgate celebrated with his staff while his players mobbed the heroes Pickford a n d D i e r, a f t e r t h e i r f i r s t win at the knockout stage of a major tour nament since 2006.

Southgate’s side looked to have emerged unscathed from an ill-disciplined match courtesy of Harr y K a n e ’s p e n a l t y, o n l y f o r Colombia’s Yerr y Mina to equalise in the closing seconds of stoppage time. The extra 30 minutes could not separate the sides and led to a ner ve shredding penalty showdown that has so often been England’s undoing. No previous world champions stand between England and the final, and should they get past Sweden, they will face either Croatia or hosts Russia for a place in the Moscow showpiece on July 15.

F I FA’s r a n k i n g s s u g g e s t England goes into the quarter-final against Sweden as favourites - they are 12th while Sweden are 24th but former manager SvenGoran Eriksson believes it will be an “extremely difficult” assignment due to S w e d e n ’s c o l l e c t i v e w o r k ethic. For his part, Gareth Southgate said: “I’m proud of the way my team played. I thought we controlled the game in the 90 minutes, played with great discipline, we were very composed with the ball and in a big game that was ver y impressive from a young group of players.”

Now 32, Nadal won the French Open last month for a record 11th time, and in the process recording his 17th Grand Slam title of his career. He is now only three behind this year’s tournament favourite and his long-term rival Roger Federer, who at the age of 36 also shows no signs of giving up his search of titles. In recent years, the strain on Nadal’s body has shown and has suffered from knee problems in particular. Nadal is notorious for

He thinks such a rule change would not be good for his sport. “Personally, I don’t feel that that’s going to bother me,” he said. “In terms of the sport, it depends. “If you want to see a

quick game without thinking, well done. If you want to keep playing in a sport that you need to think, you need to play with more tactics, you want to have long and good rallies, then of course you are going the wrong way. “But it seems like sometimes is only about the business, so... I can’t support this, no.”

Ronaldo’s future in the balance IN recent days, there has been a growing amount of speculation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Real Madrid. The Portuguese star, who saw his side make a shock early exit from the current World Cup, has been heavily linked with a move to Juventus. It was reported in certain sections of the Spanish media only this Wednesday that the Turin-based club were more than interested in signing the 33-year-old

striker during the summer transfer window. However, on the same day it was alleged that the player himself hadn’t yet made a decision as to his immediate future. Reports from the same sources also suggest that Ronaldo is determined to leave the Champions League winners and say that he’s agreed to the Juventus offer that will earn him €30 million per season. Spanish sport media is suggesting that the prime

reason for Ronaldo wanting to leave the 13-time European champions is a disagreement with the Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. With the shock departure of former manager Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo’s possible impending exit from the club, Real Madrid would have lost two very strong cogs in the team that has dominated European club football for the past five years.

They recommend keeping a bottle of water in the car at all times, and that can only be sensible on the Costa del Sol.
