Officers of the Policía Nacional have arrested a gang who were preying on children outside schools.

Five youths have been arrested, four of them aged between 18 and 29 years, the fifth member of the gang is a minor who had escaped from a Detention Centre.

All of them have allegedly committed 19 crimes in Almería during the last two months.

They accosted children as they left their schools, threatened them with knives and stole their mobile phones.

The investigation began two months ago when incidents of intimidation and theft in the Los Molinos and the upper stretches of the Avenida del Mediterráneo by a gang of five young men were reported to the police.

A thorough investigation of the allegations made by the victims, and the physical descriptions provided by them, enabled the police to identity of the perpetrators.

The methods used were to approach a child who was alone or in the company of just one other child, and threaten to harm them if they didn’t hand over their mobile phone.

The police apprehended and arrested the gang in the El Puche neighbourhood. The minor arrested was also in possession of a stolen motorcycle.

Almería

Salvamento Marítimo has rescued 18 men, all of North African origin and in apparent good health from a small boat about 25 nautical miles south of Sabinal. The Centro de Coordinación de Salvamento (CCS) of Almería received notice of a sighting of a boat by the crew of the Salvamento Marítimo Guardamar Calíope, who was patrolling the area. The Guardia Civil patrol vessel ‘Río Nacimiento’ with 2 officers on board was mobilised, and the 5.5 metre inflatable boat was intercepted and the occupants taken to Almería port.

Last Thursday, 22 November, the Ayuntamiento of Fines held the inauguration ceremony of a sculpture marking the Día internacional contra la violencia degénero (Day against gender violence). The ceremony also called to mind the tragic case of Rosa Galera, who just over a year ago lost her life due to gender violence.

A model of a monument, the work of Andrés García Ibáñez, and entitled Libertad, was dedicated to the memory of all victims of abuse.

The full-size model will be in sculpted in marble from Macael, and will be hewn from one four metre block.

The model, which has been made prior to the final realization in stone is about eighteen inches, and depicts a woman with arms outstretched palms uppermost. Her head is raised skywards as if she were ascending. It has been conceived as a figurehead, with visible reminders of the statues of the ancient world, especially the Victoria de Samotracia.

It will be located at the entrance to the town, in the area where at present there are small

terraced gardens, and will replace the Spanish flag which currently flies there.

The marble block has been donated by Mármoles Gutiérrez Mena. Sculptor Andrés García Ibáñez will be assisted by sculptor Roberto Manzano Hernández, who was born in Madrid in 1972 but who has lived in the Almanzora region for many years.

The finished monument will be in place by November 2013.

Valle de Almanzora

A publication, edited by the Mancomunidad de Municipios del Valle del Almanzora, the Proder Almanzora and the Unión Europea, has been presented at the Casa del Médico de Las Pocicas, the birthplace of the poet Juan Berbel.

Despite being considered one of the greatest Almerían poets of the twentieth century Juan Berbel is now almost completely forgotten.

Born in Las Pocicas, Albox, in 1907, he devoted his life to teaching and using poetry to engender a deep respect for nature. The landscape of Almanzora at almond blossom time and love for children influenced his six books: Cancionero de la Brisa’ (1952), ‘Encendido Manantial’ (1953), ‘Ramo de Sueños’ (1954), ‘Mies Preferida’ (1955), ‘Cielo Arriba’ (1956) and ‘Cuentos de Amor’ (1959) as well as numerous published articles.

After his death, in 1977, a tribute edition of ‘Cielo Arriba’ and the previously unpublished ‘Cancionerillo de Navidad’ with carols, lullabies and ditties was issued.

‘Nieve en flor. Álbum del Almanzora’, a publication edited by the Mancomunidad de Municipios del Valle del Almanzora, through the Instituto de Estudios del Valle del Almanzora (IEVA), the Proder Almanzora and the Unión Europea, was presented. This is a selection of unpublished poems with illustrations by José García Ibáñez, Andrés García Ibáñez, and a biography by Marta Rodríguez. The publication also includes photographs from the Berbel family album.

During the ceremony, there was a poetry recital and a concert by guitarist Guillermo Fernández.

On Friday November 30, at 12 midday, the Colegio San Valentín de Almería will host a reading of his poetry. There will be a similar event in the Palacio del Almanzora in January 2013.

Almería

A German climber has been rescued after falling and breaking both legs. He slipped and fell on the mountain after visiting the Ermita de Alicún. He was with a group of Germans visiting the shrine, but they were unable to help him because of the severity of his injuries.

The Emergency Services 112 were alerted. The Bomberos de Almería and the Guardia Civil attended, and he was rescued by helicopter and taken to hospital.

Court Taxes Prohibit Divorce, Compensation Claims and Appeals Against Fines

Controversial new taxes applying to court action could mean it costs more to appeal against a parking or traffic fine than the cost of paying for it.

And the General Council of Judges said the taxes could lead to domestic abusers getting away with their violence because their victims cannot afford to take action

Spain’s Observatory for Domestic Violence say battered wives or husbands may be unable to escape their abusers due to the prohibitive costs of seeking a divorce, or pursuing a case against their partner through the courts – a move which, according to the Observatory, could lead to thousands more domestic violence victims being forced to carry on living with their aggressors with no escape.

The taxes were due to apply from Thursday onwards, but will not now come into action for a few weeks.

Family saved from repossession by anonymous benefactor A family has been saved from being thrown out on the street by an anonymous donor who saw on TV that their house was about to be repossessed.

The 8,500-euro payment from a kind benefactor means they will be able to hand over the keys to their property in Vigo (Galicia) in exchange for wiping out the mortgage debt entirely, and will be allowed to carry on living in their house for a very low rent.

The owners took out a mortgage in 2004, but by around April 2010 they found it impossible to pay the mortgage, and put their home up for sale.

But the house did not sell, leaving them in arrears.

As well as facing repossession, they also had to pay off their outstanding IBI property tax and expenses for the community of owners, which they had not been able to find the money for.

All this led to amounts exceeding 8,000 euros, which they said they simply could not pay – and they were terrified about where they would end up living if they could not.

Additionally, the couple’s daughter – one of their three children - is very ill and would not have survived on the street.

When they heard that an unnamed donor had given them 8,500 euros, they said they felt as though they had won the lottery, and went straight to Novagalicia Bank to sign the papers.

They will also now be able to seek funding for their daughter to be treated by a specialist neurologist in Navarra.

Cáritas: ‘Around three million people in Spain are homeless’

Nearly three million people in Spain sleep on the streets every night because they have no home of their own, or live in homeless shelters, according to research by the charity Cáritas.

In Madrid alone, 600 people live on the pavement, and when combined with those who live in shelters, youth hostels or flitting between cheap guest houses, the total comes to over 3,000.

About another 4,000 people in the north-western region of Galicia are homeless, and a further 500 in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Cáritas has been unable to find details of the number of children who are living on the streets, but they say they are hearing of more and more cases of entire families with no home.

The number of women who have nowhere to live

is also rising, with 15 per cent of those attending ‘emergency’ homeless shelters – where people are offered a free bed for the night for six or seven days – being women in 2011, increasing to 22 per cent this year.

Cáritas says a person without a home ‘has no access to their basic rights’ and ‘no dignity’, meaning they and their lives are ‘totally destroyed and at stalemate’.

A homeless charity, Xarxa d’Atenció a Persones Sense Llar, or XAPSLL (‘attention network for people without homes’) says: “Something is not working in society and in the economy if there are people out there with nowhere to live.”

Recent evictions have also raised the plight of the homeless in the public eye.

Calls For Justification From Spain For Airport Tax Hike

All descendants of the Jews who were thrown out of Spain during the inquisition in the year 1492 are now entitled to Spanish nationality – wherever they live in the world.

The Civil Code entry relating to this issue, which dates back to 1982, states that the Sephardic people of Israel and Turkey have to be living in Spain for a minimum of two years before they can apply for citizenship, but this has been amended to let them do so immediately and even if they have never been to or lived in the country.

Spouses of the Sephardim and their children aged under 18 are also covered by all rights to protection and assistance

offered by the Spanish Consulate.

They will have to accredit the fact they are direct descendants of the Jews expelled from Spain at the end of the 15th century by their surnames, native language, connection to Spanish culture and customs, or by legitimately tracing and proving their origins via their family tree.

Spain’s ministries of justice and foreign affairs – led by Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón and José Manuel García-Margalló respectively – say that 520 years on from the Inquisition, there are possibly as many as a quarter of a million native speakers of the minority Judaic-Spanish dialect found in certain parts of Israel and Turkey.

Domestic violence victims stay silent through fear of financial hardship Nearly two-thirds of victims of domestic violence do not report their attackers because they are afraid of being left homeless and impoverished, research has shown.

The survey, carried out by the Adecco Foundation, reveals that 76 per cent of abuse victims would have felt ‘stronger’ and more able to leave their violent partners – or at least report them – if they had a job.

With the lack of available employment, many are forced to stay living with their abusers as they have no income and no way of living independently.

A total of 64 per cent of victims said they could not risk reporting their assailants to the police, in case they ended up

with no way of supporting themselves financially.

And 73 per cent of those interviewed said they had not been able to find work, so they were stuck living with their abusers.

The survey found that the typical domestic violence victim is female, aged between 36 and 45, with at least one child, and with only basic education.

However, although these represented the majority, only around a half of all victims fitted this profile, with the rest being all ages and levels of education, and some being men.

European Commissioners have demanded an explanation from Spain over airport tax increases which have particularly risen in Barajas and El Prat.

Following complaints from various airlines as to the extra costs they are facing, the Commission has written to Mariano Rajoy’s cabinet to ask them to justify how their own expenses of running Spain’s airports make the tax hikes necessary.

The government has two months to reply before further action is taken.

Airlines and travel agencies say the tax rises flout EU rules.

If this is found to be the case and the increases are not justified, the Commission may take the case to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg, or force the country to recalculate duties it charges to flight operators.

Carrier firms say they have not been properly consulted before the rises were applied.

The EC says airlines are being put off using Spanish airports because of the cost, especially those of Madrid (Barajas) and Barcelona (El Prat) where taxes have doubled in the past year with no apparent explanation.

Minimum requisites for calculating taxes are required according to a European Directive issued on the matter in 2009, and consultation with affected airlines is required before these are put in place.

All airport users should be given sufficient information about taxes in advance, the Directive requires.

Automatic residence rights for foreign homebuyers in Spain

Foreigners who buy properties in Spain valued at 160,000 euros or more may automatically get residence cards in a new government initiative to encourage homebuyers from overseas.

They say the move is mainly aimed at Chinese and Russian nationals, but does not believe it will lead to a sudden rush for residence certificates to be approved.

And as yet, the threshold of 160,000 euros is merely a guideline which may change in the future with fluctuations in the market.

They say it is mainly so that when holiday home owners from outside the

EU wish to travel to Spain to spend time in their properties, they will not have to apply for a visa every time they want to get into the country.

With well over a quarter of a million homes in Spain sitting empty and most Spanish people being unable to afford to buy them because of job loss or, where they are working, banks’ new restrictions on offering mortgage finance, the only way to revive the housing market in the country is by attracting foreign buyers – of which there are plenty interested, the government says.

And now that the market has suffered such a dramatic

fall with prices at a fraction of what they were five years ago, more and more buyers from abroad are seeing property in Spain as an investment.

Giving people residence rights automatically when they buy a home has already been introduced in Portugal and the Republic of Ireland.

At present, buying a property is no guarantee that the purchaser will be given residence in Spain.

They are obliged to have a NIE number, but are frequently only given a temporary residence card that does not allow them to work

Ronaldo’s smashed-up version has just 3,099 kilometres on the clock. Its seller is a specialist in top-of-the-range car parts based in Duppigheim, eastern France, and says it is completely repairable and would be roadworthy again once the necessary work was carried out.

The car was damaged while Ronaldo was on his way to the Carrington football ground for a training session, during which he veered off the motorway. Although the front part is severely dented, the player escaped unharmed.

Photos on eBay show the car from several angles and also the vehicle registration document bearing the name of Cristiano Ronaldo.

EU nations far apart on budget as summit continues

European leaders have resumed gruelling budget negotiations in Brussels amid signs a deal may be out of reach. The talks had continued late into last Thursday night.

A revised proposal from summit chairman Herman Van Rompuy keeps the spending ceiling in place but reallocates funds.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron told reporters in Brussels on Friday it was not “a time for tinkering” with the EU’s 20142020 budget, and “unaffordable spending” should be cut.

He held talks with French President Francois Hollande and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

Mr Cameron’s office said German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been sympathetic to the argument for further cuts when she also met him on Friday.

Earlier, Mrs Merkel said: “I think we’re advancing a bit, but I doubt that we will reach a deal”. Mr Hollande also cautioned that an agreement might not be possible.

The opening of the summit last Thursday was delayed for three hours because of stark differences over the budget plans.

Most EU members support an increase in the budget but several countries, mostly the big net contributors, say it is unacceptable at a time of austerity.

The biggest net contributors (those who pay in more than they get back) are: Germany, the UK, France and Italy.

But EU Commission data shows that in terms of per capita contributions the UK is sixth, after the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Finland.

In a development which could strain relations with the European Parliament, EU leaders at the summit approved the appointment of Luxembourg’s Yves Mersch to the executive board of the European Central Bank.

MEPs had blocked the appointment of Mr Mersch, the governor of Luxembourg’s central bank, on the grounds that there were not enough women in the ECB’s senior ranks.

“Today’s decision undermines and discredits work being undertaken to make the EU’s economic governance system more democratically accountable,” UK MEP Sharon Bowles (Liberal Democrat), who chairs the parliament’s influential economic and monetary affairs committee, said.

The revised plan from European Council President Van Rompuy keeps a total spending ceiling of 973bn euros (£783bn; $1.2tn). But the cuts to cohesion spending - money for Europe’s poorer regions - and to the agriculture budget would not be as deep.

The cuts to cohesion would be 11bn euros less and for agriculture 7.7bn euros less.

Other spending items would be cut further to compensate, but there is no change in the proposed levels of administration

costs - something which the UK may find unacceptable.

A top aide to Mr Van Rompuy, Richard Corbett, said the adjustments “reflect the large majority view of what came out of the bilateral talks” on Thursday.

“What he put on the table was already a reduction compared with the existing budget,” covering 2007-2013, he told the BBC. He said a deal “could still be put together, but there is a lot of detail to be gone through”.

The 90-minute session late on Thursday followed a gruelling day of face-to-face meetings between Mr Van Rompuy and each of the bloc’s leaders, followed by a flurry of backroom discussions.

The EU Commission, which drafts EU laws, has called for an increase of 4.8% on the 2007-2013 budget - a position supported by the European Parliament and many countries which are net beneficiaries, including Poland, Hungary and Spain.

The UK is the most vocal of EU member states seeking cuts in the budget to match austerity programmes at home.

“No, I’m not happy at all,” Mr Cameron said about Mr Van Rompuy’s offer.

A Downing Street statement said Mr Cameron had stressed the importance of the UK keeping its budget rebate, worth 3.5bn euros in 2011.

The statement called the rebate “fully justified”. The EU Commission and some EU governments want the rebate scrapped.

Mr Cameron has warned he may use his veto if other EU countries call for any rise in EU spending. The Netherlands and Sweden back his call for a freeze in spending, allowing for inflation.

Poland and its former-communist neighbours, which rely heavily on EU cash, want current spending maintained or raised.

Mr Hollande has also called for subsidies for farming and development programmes to be sustained for poorer nations. France has traditionally been a big beneficiary of EU farm support.

Failure to agree on the budget would mean rolling over the 2013 budget into 2014 on a month-by-month basis, putting some longterm projects at risk.

Analysts say that could leave the UK in a worse position, because the 2013 budget is bigger than the preceding years of the 20072013 multi-year budget.

The UK government could then end up with an EU budget higher than what it says it will accept now.

MEPs vote to close ‘shark finning’ loopholes

A report by Mark Kinver, the BBC’s Environment reporter, states that MEPs have voted to close loopholes that allowed some EU fishing vessels to continue “shark finning”.

Although the EU banned removing shark fins at sea and discarding the body, special permits allowed finning to continue legally.

Conservation groups, which say finning was threatening shark numbers, welcomed the European Parliament’s decision.

The decision to back the European Commission’s proposals will now be considered by EU fisheries ministers.

The resolution was adopted with 566 votes in favour, 47 against and 16 abstentions.

“Parliament’s vote represents a major milestone in the global effort to end the wasteful practice,” said Sandrine Polti, EU shark policy adviser for the Pew Environmental Group and the Shark Alliance. “[We have] been working towards this and other fundamental reforms in European shark policies for more than six years and are thrilled with today’s vote and the progress we expect to stem from it.”

Dr Joanna Swabe, EU director for Humane Society International (HSI), said she was delighted that MEPs had decided not to support the argument to retain the special permits.

“This would have been disastrous for shark protection not just in EU waters but worldwide,” she said.

“HSI commends the European Parliament for defending sharks against the cruel and wasteful practice of shark finning.”

Shark finning is driven by the fact that

the animals’ fins are highly valuable in comparison with shark carcasses. As severed fins could be easily stored, it made economic sense for fishing vessels to remove the fins at sea, rather than bringing the entire animal - which would quickly fill a vessel’s cold storage areas - into port. It is estimated that fins can sell for between 16 and 70 euros (£13- £56; US$20-90) per kilogramme in Asia.

The EU’s global catch of sharks ranks second only to Indonesia, yet the European Commission has committed itself - under the EU Action Plan for the Conservation and Management of Sharks - to adopt the necessary measures to conserve shark species and to minimise waste and discards from shark catches.

Finning is also deemed cruel because the fins are often removed while the animal is still alive - it then drowns when it is thrown back into the sea.

Conservationists argued that the issuing of Special Fishing Permits (SFPs) that allowed fins to be removed at sea prevented the EU ban, introduced in 2003, from becoming fully effective.

According to European Parliament data, the largest number of SFPs issued to date were to Spanish and Portuguese vessels (1266 and 145 respectively, between 2004 and 2010).

It added that until 2009, the UK, Germany and Lithuania had also issued SFPs. Ms Polti observed: “Shark Alliance member groups look forward to continued co-operation in shepherding and promoting a final ‘fins-attached’ rule and in securing complementary safeguards, such as domestic and international catch limits, to fully address the overexploitation of sharks.”

Russia to lift 16year ban on British beef and lamb

Russia has agreed to lift a 16-year ban on importing British beef and lamb, the UK government has said.

British farmers had been prevented from exporting to Russia following the 1996 BSE outbreak in the UK, despite it being lifted worldwide in 2006.

The government expects an official confirmation from Russia shortly, said a statement.

Prime Minister David Cameron raised the issue during a visit to Russia last year.

“British food is recognised around the world for using quality ingredients, for rigorous production standards, and for reliable traceability. This deal is further evidence of international confidence in what British producers have to offer,” said Environment Secretary Owen Paterson regarding the latest agreement.

“Our food exports are booming, recently topping £10bn a year, and this government is doing all it can to open up markets abroad,” he said, adding that UK food and drink exports rose by 9% to £18.2bn last year.

A worldwide ban on British live cattle, meat and products was lifted by the EU in 2006.

However, Russia kept the ban in place amid fears over the threat of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE).

According to the BBC’s Moscow correspondent Daniel Sandford, the continued restrictions have been a sore point between the two countries.

The announcement of the lifting of the ban came during a visit to the Russian capital by the UK’s chief veterinary officer Nigel Gibbens, but seemed to take the British delegation by surprise, our correspondent says.

It will be welcomed by UK farmers keen to sell their products to Russia’s fast-growing market, where there is potential for selling lamb and beef and also live animals to farms.

17th AGM Held on 16 November

Mojacar Branch of The Royal British Legion In Spain held its 17th Annual General Meeting at Hotel Continental on the Playa last Friday 16th November.

The meeting welcomed back Michael Coote the Branch Standard Bearer from his visit to the Festival of Remembrance in London and he led the Committee to the Officer’s Table parading the Standard despite the difficulty of low ceilings.

The President Joe Spicer officially opened the meeting and after the Exhortation, Items on the Agenda included the Election of Officers for the Branch and Christine White as the new Branch Secretary was appointed and the acting Vice Chairman Mark Davies was later elected to the Committee. Also a short report on the Festival at The Royal Albert Hall was given by Mick Coote. All business completed the National Anthem was sung by the Membership who remained standing as the Standard Bearer left the Room and the meeting was declared closed. The meeting was followed by an enormous buffet in the Hotel with Members enjoying the superb sea views and ended an interesting and successful day. The funds raised by the Branch Membership for the 2012 Poppy Appeal was €14,859.40 and thanks goes to all who helped with this fantastic achievement said the Branch Treasurer Mr. Alan Drummond.

Taxman Obtains List Of Jersey Bank Accounts

Information on over 8,000 HSBC Jersey clients has been leaked to the tax authorities. Half of the names on the list are UK residents, while the rest are based in various other countries, including Spain.

We had a similar situation with HSBC Geneva a few years ago. This enabled the tax authorities to trace tax evaders and recoup unpaid tax and interest and penalties.

This latest incident was uncovered by the Daily Telegraph which published an exposé on 8th November.

According to the report, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) received information – names, addresses and account balances - on 4,388 UK residents from a whistleblower. Between them they hold £699 million in HSBC current accounts at the bank’s Jersey branches.

The list reportedly includes bankers, senior figures in the city, doctors, mining and oil executives and oil workers. It

also contains dozens of people who appear to have no source of substantial income and yet hold large amounts in Jersey.

HMRC is understood to be going through the list and comparing it to tax returns to determine which accounts have been correctly declared and which have not.

In all, the list contains 8,474 names, including 333 here in Spain. We can expect the names of clients based in other countries to be passed on to their tax authorities. This is what happened with the Geneva list and is typical of the exchange of information we see nowadays as governments work together to fight tax evasion.

Colour is key…

You will need one black eye pencil, at least two colours of powder eyeshadow, and dark mascara to produce a fantastic smoky eyes effect. The base colour should be a rich shimmery (not metallic) powder texture. Choose a shade slightly darker than your skin tone. You may choose neutral beige or grey colours for a soft and sophisticated look; or use a bright base for a dramatic look. The contour colour must be a dark, matte, or slightly shimmery colour. With a pointy sponge applicator, apply contour colour eyeshadow all the way around your eyes, blending it well with the pencil line.

With a medium-sized soft round brush (you can also use a flat one, holding it sideways), blend the eyeshadows on the upper eyelid. With a flat brush, blend the eyeshadows on the lower eyelid.

Can you Catch A Scratch?

Scratching can be catching, new research has shown.

Just like yawns, scratching an itch is contagious, say scientists. The sight of someone trying to get rid of an itch can lead us to scratch ourselves - without even knowing it.

Researchers tested 30 volunteers to see if visual cues could trigger itching and compel them to scratch.

Participants were shown “itch-related” images such as ants, fleas, or skin rashes, or neutral photos including butterflies and healthy skin. Some pictures only showed a possible cause of itching, such as ants crawling on the skin, while others depicted itchy people scratching or washing their hands.

As volunteers looked at each image, they were asked how itchy they felt. The scientists also recorded the number of times participants scratched themselves.

The results, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, showed that visual images alone can trigger itch sensations.

But it was watching another person scratching, rather than just seeing the cause of the itch, that led the volunteers to scratch themselves.

“The results suggest that, whereas the sensation of itch may be effectively transmitted by viewing others experiencing itch-related stimuli on the body, the desire to scratch is more effectively provoked by viewing others’ scratching.

“Our findings may help to improve the efficiency of treatment programmes for people suffering from chronic itch. Knowing the specific triggers of an individual’s chronic itch and how visual stimuli translate to the physical may also provide insight into the mechanisms of ‘psychosomatic itch’, in which there are no physical triggers.”

Nina Goad, of the British Association of Dermatologists, said: “Itch is often the worst symptom for people with skin disorders, and any research into its causes that may lead to new methods of alleviation will be greatly welcomed by the millions of skin patients.

“Combining elements of psychology with dermatology is an increasingly important area of research.”

In previous articles, we’ve discussed the benefits of replacing lost teeth with titanium implants.

In some cases, there’s not enough bone mass for ordinary implants, and the dental surgeon may suggest a rehabilitation via zygomatic implants. These implants are longer than ordinary implants (up to 55 mm instead of the usual 10 to 15 mm) and pass through or next to the sinus to be lodged in the strongest bulk of bone which forms the cheekbone.

This surgery requires a hospital stay, due to the use of general anaesthetic.

Smoking doesn’t just age your lungs, it damages your BRAIN, too

The effects of smoking on the skin are well documented with those keen to stay looking young urged to stub out the cigarettes.

But a new study has found that smoking could also age the brain.

Tests on 8,800 people over 50 have showed smoking can damage memory, learning and reading skills making people more vulnerable to dementia.

Scientists from Kings College London, who carried out the research, also found high blood pressure and being overweight also seemed to affect the brain, but to a lesser extent.

They said that people needed to be aware that lifestyles could damage the mind as well as the body.

The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (Elsa) carried out tests of memory, planning and overall mental ability on volunteers after four and eight years.

The study showed that smoking consistently reduced all three performance measures after four years.

High blood pressure and high risk of stroke were also associated with lower scores for memory and overall mental ability after eight years.

Being overweight was also linked to poor memory.

The findings, published in the journal Age and Ageing, indicate that future trials should focus on combinations of risk factors rather than individual causes of mental decline, say the researchers.

Lead scientist Dr Alex Dregan, from King’s College London, said: ‘Cognitive decline becomes more common with ageing and for an increasing number of people interferes with daily functioning and well-being.

‘Some older people can become forgetful, have trouble remembering common words or have problems organising daily tasks more than others.

‘We have identified a number of risk factors which could be associated with

accelerated cognitive decline, all of which, could be modifiable.

‘This offers valuable knowledge for future prevention and treatment interventions.’

The results indicate that high blood pressure has a gradual effect on the brain over a long period, according to the scientists.

‘This could explain why short-term trials of blood pressure lowering drugs being used to treat mental decline had failed to show a clear benefit.

Dr Dregan added: ‘Our research suggests that the most promising approach to delaying or preventing early ageing of the brain is one that acknowledges the multicausality of cognitive decline.’

Jessica Smith, from the Alzheimer’s Society, said: ‘We all know smoking, a high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and a high BMI (body mass index) is bad for our heart.

‘This research adds to the huge amount of evidence that also suggests they can be bad for our head too.

‘One in three people over 65 will develop dementia but there are things people can do to reduce their risk.

‘Eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, getting your blood pressure and cholesterol checked and not smoking can all make a difference.’

Dr Simon Ridley, from the charity Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: ‘Research has repeatedly linked smoking and high blood pressure to a greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia, and this study adds further weight to that evidence.

‘Cognitive decline as we age can develop into dementia, and unravelling the factors that are linked to this decline could be crucial for finding ways to prevent the condition.’

Next year could bring a new twist in the evolution of the smartphone.

Samsung are gearing up to produce flexible, unbreakable mobile phone screens that can be bent, twisted and even folded up and put in your wallet.

The South Korean tech giant reportedly has the flexible screens in the final stage of development and will be ready to ship them next year.

The breakthrough has been made by through the use of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), which are thin and can be put on flexible material such as plastic or metal foil.

Samsung is not the only company to have invested heavily in research into flexible screens using OLEDs. Companies including Japan’s Sony and LG Display, also of South Korea have launched prototypes.

However Samsung is the first to promise a launch date for the technology, with an unnamed source ‘familiar with the situation’ telling the Wall Street Journal they will ship in the first half of 2013.

Looking at the release dates of the company’s flagship smartphones, the S series, that suggests that the first device to feature the flexible screen technology could be the yet to be announced S4.

The company’s move to produce the flexible displays comes as smartphone and tablet makers search for ways to differentiate their products in a market where customers face a glut of almost identical products.

Vinita Jakhanwal, director of mobile and emerging displays and technology at IHS Electronics and Media, told Tech News World: ‘Flexible AMOLEDs can help Samsung differentiate its products in a smartphone market where most products offer similar

products and functionality.’

Even if Samsung were not able to able able to commercialise flexible screens straight away, making their screens out of plastic rather than glass would make their devices lighter, more durable and cheaper than rivals’.

A common bugbear with the kinds of touchscreen displays often used on mobile devices is that they are brittle and prone to cracking. Replacing the glass now used with plastic would solve that problem.

Samsung had previously promised to bring flexible displays to market this year, but that deadline came and went without any announcement from the company.

However, the company’s push for innovation has become more urgent as other display makers are also introducing different technologies for mobile phone and tablet screens.

Sony has been researching the same flexible screen technology since 2002, and showcased a 4.1in flexible OLED two years ago, the same time as Samsung showed off their version of the technology.

However, a spokesman for Sony told the Wall Street Journal he couldn’t comment on when the company would begin mass producing the displays.

And earlier this year, Apple filed a patent for ‘electronic devices with flexible displays’ that included features like on-screen keyboards that can be modified to handle concave or convex curves.

Lee Chang-hoon, vice president of Samsung’s display division, told the Journal his company has sent out samples of the new displays to a few select customers, but added that the release dates of any new products using the technology has not yet been confirmed.

Sales of garlic are booming in western Serbia after the local council issued a public health warning that a vampire was on the loose.

The warning came after an old ruined mill, said to once have been the home of notorious vampire Sava Savanovic, collapsed.

Savanovic was said to have lived in the old watermill on the Rogacica river, at Zarozje village in the municipality of Bajina Basta where he drank the blood of anybody that came to mill their grain.

The watermill was bought by the local Jagodic family, and they were too scared to use it as a mill - but discovered it was a goldmine when they started advertising it to tourists.

But the family were worried about carrying out building work on the mill because they were scared they might disturb the vampire or unleash his wrath if his home was messed around with - and now the property has

collapsed through lack of repair.

But for locals it has sparked rumours that the vampire is now free once again.

Local mayor Miodrag Vujetic admitted: “People are worried, everybody knows the legend of this vampire and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people. We are all frightened.”

He added that it was all very well for people who didn’t live in the area to laugh at their fears but he said nobody in the region was in any doubt that vampires do exist.

He confirmed that the local council had advised all villagers to put garlic on their doors and windows to protect them from the vampire as it was well known they can’t stand the smell.

He added: “We have also reminded them to put a Holy cross in every room in the house.”

Toy boat to set off on Atlantic crossing

A retired Nato scientist will this week launch his toy boat on what he hopes will be the first unmanned trip across the Atlantic.

Robin Lovelock has spent four years developing a craft which he believes can survive the 6,000 mile journey.

The Snoopy Sloop is only 4ft long, weighs just 30lbs and is held together in parts by bathroom light cord, reports the Daily Telegraph.

But it has already demonstrated its endurance, having completed more than 5,000 miles of almost continuous sailing, on Bray Lake, near Windsor, over seven months.

Now it faces a more testing voyage, battling the seas, and possibly storms, of the North Atlantic, despite being a fraction of the size of shipping which normally

makes the winter crossing.

Mr Lovelock, 65, built the boat in the games room of his house in Sunninghill, Berkshire, from off-theshelf parts scoured from the internet at a cost of less than £450.

The boat will be powered by the wind, but navigated by a solar-powered computer and GPS system.

These will steer the boat on a route along the Channel, then south towards the Azores to catch the trade winds to the Bahamas and onwards to land near where the Pilgrim Fathers came ashore at Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Mr Lovelock has been assisted by a group of friends, he has described as his “Last of the Summer Wine” team, including a former veteran of the Robot Wars BBC television show.

“I got hooked about four years ago,” he said. “I didn’t even play with model boats when I was a boy. I sometimes tinker on the boat in the lounge, but am usually banished to the games room by my wife.”

The attempt is being made as part of an international contest, the Microtransat Challenge, to become the first to send an unmanned boat from south of Ireland to the Bahamas.

THE GOVERNMENT IS CREATING AMAZING INCENTIVES TO PURCHASE PROPERTY, BUT ONLY PROFESIONAL INVESTORS ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE

Q: I understand that the government has created incentives to try and get people to purchase properties. Can you explain them?

A. This is correct. The government in it’s desperation to get the property market moving and to try and help the builders and banks sell their properties has legislated fantastic incentives, but up to now only professional real estate investors seem to be taking advantage.

There are two particular incentives out there at this moment that are fantastic is combined with well-priced property.

1. New properties, which up to now where subject to V.A.T at 8% will only, pay 4% up to the end of this year. After that V.A.T. on new properties will be 10%.

This does not affect second hand property, which is still subject to transfer tax of 8%.

2. Any urban property (villas, houses, flats, garages) purchased from now until the end of this year will have a special treatment when eventually sold. Whatever capital gains tax rate is applicable when it’s sold will be halved.

You are entitled to use both these incentives combined: The conclusion: Buy a new build property before the end of this year and you will save 4% on your purchase (6% if you compare to the rate that will be applicable from the 1st of January of 2013), and half of your capital gains tax when you sell.

BE CAREFULL: The first exemption is only on new properties, subject to V.A.T (not on second hand ones subject to transfer tax), and the second exemption does not apply to rustic properties (farmhouses etc).

UK economic growth confirmed at 1%

The UK economy grew by 1% between July and September, official figures have confirmed.

Last month, the Office for National Statistics’ first estimate showed the surprisingly strong growth, bringing to an end a nine-month long recession.

The Olympic Games helped to boost growth over the summer.

Many analysts had expected the growth figure to be revised down. But earlier figures were slightly weaker than previously thought.

Compared with a year earlier, as opposed to the previous quarter, the economy contracted by 0.1%, whereas the previous estimate had shown flat growth.

Strong consumer spending, which grew by 0.6%, was an important factor behind the strong quarterly growth.

The services sector grew by 1.3%, unchanged from the ONS’ previous estimate, but growth in industrial production was revised down to 0.9% from 1.1%.

The contraction in the construction sector was also revised to show a slightly steeper drop.

The third quarter growth figure was enhanced by comparison with the previous three months, when an extra public holiday as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations hit growth.

The ONS will revise its growth figures for the third quarter again next month, when it will have a more comprehensive set of data for the UK’s economic performance.

Despite the confirmation of strong growth, analysts warned that it may be short lived.

“If anything, the details in the new data further highlight the temporary nature of the upturn,” said Chris Williamson at research group Markit.

“Payback is likely in the fourth quarter.”

David Owen at investment banking group Jefferies said: “People are generally expecting GDP to have slowed sharply into the fourth quarter on the published figure, or indeed to have actually contracted slightly compared to the third quarter.”

Mark Carney named new Bank of England governor

Mark Carney has been named as the new governor of the Bank of England by Chancellor George Osborne.

Mr Carney, the governor of the Canadian central bank, will serve for five years and will hold new regulatory powers over banks. He was a surprise choice for the head of the UK’s central bank and had previously ruled himself out. The post is seen as one of the most important positions in the stewardship of the UK economy.

Current governor Sir Mervyn King steps down from the post next June.

Sir Mervyn said Mr Carney represented “a new generation of leadership for the Bank of England, and is an outstanding choice to succeed me”.

Mr Osborne told Parliament that Mr Carney, 47, would bring the “strong leadership and external experience the Bank needs” and added that the Canadian would apply for British citizenship.

He said Mr Carney was acknowledged as “the outstanding central banker of his generation”.

During Mr Carney’s five years as governor in Canada, Mr Osborne said he was “acknowledged to have weathered the economic storm better than any other major Western

economy”.

Mr Carney said he was “honoured to accept this important and demanding role” at a “critical time for the British, European and global economies”.

He will serve in his current post until May next year. Mr Carney said he was “not without ties” to the UK - his wife is a dual national of the UK and Canada.

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls welcomed the incoming governor as a “good choice, good judgement”.

Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, told the BBC that Mr Carney “ticks all the boxes” but added that his committee would question him on matters such as how he will approach macro-prudential stability and what his views on quantitative easing are.

The British Chambers of Commerce said it hoped that the new governor would “focus relentlessly on supporting business growth across the UK - not just in the Square Mile”.

The CBI said Mr Carney’s “strong track record as the Canadian central bank governor and extensive experience in international financial regulation mean that he is well positioned to guide Britain through challenging economic times”.

THE SPAINIAC | La Sagrada Família | Candice Parsons

As the first publication of this column, Antoni Gaudí’s Sagrada Família of Barcelona may seem like an all-too-common and predictable attraction for a ‘Spainiac’ from Australia to write about. On the contrary, it would be imprudent to not give any attention to the deeper discussion behind how this incomplete masterpiece has become one of Spain’s most globally recognized icons.

George Orwell once described the Sagrada Família as “one of the most hideous buildings in the world.” Salvador Dali, overwhelmed by Gaudí’s “superbly creative bad taste”, called it a “tactile erogenous zone.” Perhaps such confrontational opinions towards work of the Spanish Catalan genius, acclaimed for his seven idiosyncratic UNESCO World Heritage sites, have somewhat inadvertently contributed to the mass attraction shaping the building’s emblematic significance to Spain.

Following its construction in 1882 by architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, Gaudí inherited Sagrada Família the following year and entirely took over, transforming the architectural style and engineering plans to a synthesis of his own. This combined neo-Gothic, art noveau, modernist and noucentisme elements together with his vision inspired by religious faith and love of nature.

From the age of 31, Gaudí committed most of his life to

constructing the church, whilst throughout this, radically changing his design plans. “My client is not in a hurry”, he used to say, referring to God when explaining the delayed time it was taking to complete the Roman Catholic Church. Lucidly aware that his extensive project plans could not be finished in his lifetime, he envisaged the Sagrada Família as a towering and majestic visual tale of Christ’s life.

Gaudí spent the last year of his life living on the site, and completed the Nativity Façade, one tower, the apse and the crypt before he was hit by a Barcelona tram in June 1926. After his death, further construction severely decreased due to the lack of funds and outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Many of Gaudí’s construction models were destroyed in a fire started by anti-clerical anarchists at the beginning of the Civil War in 1936.

The remaining construction drawings and models have been vital to his successors in reconstructing them and pursuing Gaudí’s vision, allowing architects to continue working on the building. Being under construction for over 125 years now, almost 60, 000 people still attended its consecration mass in November 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. Much controversy, followed by a stream of assorted questions and answers now flows around the Sagrada Família; is it still credible as Gaudí’s art due to the amount of people that have

worked on it after him? If Gaudí’s models and plans were destroyed, how do we surely know the reconstructed models are true to his vision? Is it worth completing? Will completing it remove the Basilica’s horrifically compelling beauty and uniqueness of seeing art in progress, rather than the usual completed art we see? The list goes on and the discussions continue to amplify, whilst the amount of its visitors keeps growing. Upon completion, roughly estimated between years 2026–2028, the Sagrada Família will have 18 towers, of which twelve will be dedicated to the apostles, four to the evangelists, one to Jesus and one to Mary.

When, or if, this does actually happen, the Basilica has and will continue to encompass a rare hype and recognition like no other and Gaudí’s legacy will live on from this alone. One solid answer is definite here; despite living in poverty and poor health prior to his ill-fated death, the gifted man with unfinished business attests a successful life, testifying that what you do in life is as equally imperative as how you do it...

The Barcelona and Argentinian footballersupreme, Lionel Messi, is now in striking distance of breaking Gerd Muller’s record for most goals scored in a calendar year at competitive level – a record that until recently looked as if it would not be challenged.

The ‘little man’ needs to find the back of the net just four times in six games to beat the German striker’s world record haul of 85 goals which was set 40 years ago in 1972.

Muller, who won the European Cup, four Bundesliga titles and the World Cup during his career with Bayern Munich and West Germany, played in just 60 games for club and country to achieve his record. If Messi scores his 86th goal of 2012 in Barcelona’s final La Liga game of the year versus Real Valladolid at the Nou Camp on 22 December, his appearance tally will be 70.

But as the 25 year-old Messi closes in on Muller’s record, it is fair to ask whose achievement is greater?

I feel that the number of appearances alone fail to prove that Muller’s achievement was the more impressive, particularly because 12 of his goals came in an obscure and shortlived competition, the DFB-Ligapokal, the now defunct German League Cup. With Munich staging the summer Olympics that year, the start of the 1972-73 Bundesliga season was delayed until mid-September, so a League Cup competition was created to bridge the gap and ensure that all teams played matches to help generate income.

At first, Bayern Munich did not take the competition seriously, sending out an understrength team in its opening away tie, Muller being an absentee. This enraged the home supporters, who had paid good money to watch Bayern’s celebrated first-team players.

A photographer even filed a fraud lawsuit against the Munich club.

Thereafter, Bayern fielded their first team and Muller went on to bag 12 goals in five games, including a four-timer against a struggling Second Division Regional League team, FC Hof. Strength of schedule is one factor in the difference between the respective appearance and scoring totals of Messi and Muller. But there is also the issue of the globalization of the top European Leagues.

While Muller netted 13 goals at international level and 11 in various European club matches, 42 of his 85 strikes in 1972 came in 34 Bundesliga matches at a time when the top soccer talent was spread a lot more thinly across Europe and indeed, the world.

So far this year, Messi has scored 52 goals in 34 La Liga games and while being assisted by two brilliant midfielders in Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, he regularly faces the game’s best defenders. This was not so when Muller was around!

Of Messi’s other 28 goals so far this year, 12 have come with Argentina, including a hattrick in a friendly against Brazil in New Jersey; 11 in the Champions League; three in the Copa del Rey and two in the Spanish Super Cup. However, I feel – and having been involved in football for many years - that drawing comparisons between eras is never an exact science. Suffice to say, Messrs Messi and Muller have a great deal in common - their ability to score goals and do so often.

Both have been the leading scorer in the European Cup/Champions League on four occasions and earlier this year (in March) Messi joined Muller as the 11th player to have netted five times in a single European Cup/ Champions League match.

That five-goal haul, which Messi claimed in a 7-1 drubbing of Bayer Leverkusen, came in the middle of an 18-goal scoring run, spread over eight games, during which time he also netted four against Valencia and a hat-trick versus Granada.

Despite his lack of bulk (he’s only 5ft 7in tall and weights barely 11st) Messi riles defenders with his grace, darting pace and unrivaled close control of the ball, which at times seems to be glued to his feet. He’s won over 30 penalties during his Barcelona days and has picked himself up scored 28 of them!

In contrast, Muller was a squat and powerful five-foot-nine poacher who simply hung around the penalty-area waiting to pick up the pieces, which he did to perfection.

The cleverness of Messi’s play is matched by a lethal accuracy in front of the goal. And surprisingly he netted only once in his first 14 outings for Barcelona, but now he’s shattering all sorts of scoring records.

In addition to his five Spanish championships, three Champions Leagues titles and numerous individual awards, Messi smashed Muller’s record of 67 goals in a single European season by scoring 73 times in 2011-12.

He’s now by far Barcelona’s champion marksman of all-time with 279 goals to his credit in 349 senior appearances, plus another 31 in 76 games for Argentina, and last month his coach at the Nou Camp, Tito Vilanova, said “His goal-tally is spectacular. There’s no doubt about that. It takes other great players seven or eight seasons to score the amount of goals he nets in one season.”

But for all the records in football, there’s more to be broken – and the next big one is up for grabs. So, with eight more games remaining in 2012, ‘King Leo’ (as he fans call him) needs just eight goals to become the world’s master marksman in a single calendar year. * Barcelona’s last six games are against Alaves (this week), then Athletic Bilbao, Benfica (CL), Real Betis, Atletico Madrid & Real Valladolid on 1st, 5th, 9th, 16th & 22nd December.

had much idea what the other was talking about, but Amalia was big on hand signals!

The hospital food offered made my memories of school dinners seem like banquets fit for nobility, so I fetched my purse and mentioned to her that I was going down to the shop to buy Pete something to eat.

As I crossed the lobby I saw Amalia, nervously hopping from foot to tiny foot, scanning the crowd and obviously waiting for someone. In her hand she had a small scrap of paper.

She saw me and homed in gratefully. ‘Can you read Spanish?’ she asked, holding out the paper. Strange, I thought, perhaps she can’t read – yet I’m sure I had seen her reading Pronto and 10 Minutos, maybe she was only looking at the pictures?

She looked so anxious and the paper seemed so important to her that I took it and read it out loud, hoping that I could help. In Spanish it read: ‘I’m sorry I’ve not been nicer to you, but circumstances have overcome me. You are very kind people, I hope everything goes well for you.’

‘I couldn’t say the words.’ She said, tears in her eyes.

It’s hard hugging someone half your height, but if anyone ever deserved a hug, it was dear little Amalia, right there in the hospital lobby.

I hope her neighbours are as good to her as ours are to us.

The X-asperation Factor

Every year around this time, I rattle on about one or other of those two Saturday night stalwarts – The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing. And although I had pretty much made up my mind that I would avoid those subjects this time around, I am drawn to the events of Saturday the 17th November on The X factor.

Because shock horror, the two acts that the panel of judges in their infinite wisdom have deemed to be the best two vocalists in the competition, were in the bottom two sing-off with the result that the brilliant 16 year old Ella Henderson – the only female remaining in the competition – was given her marching orders.

The arrogance of the judges knows no bounds, with Tulisa Contostavlos up in arms because “The public voted for the wrong people” and not for the first time banging on about it being a singing contest with the vocals the most important aspect - a

sentiment that had the other judges nodding in agreement.

Tulisa, like her fellow judge and colleague Nicole Scherzinger is a stunner, but unfortunately unlike Nicole, she spoils it by speaking.

But hang on, if it’s all about the vocals Tulisa, how come you used your vote to keep the multicoloured Rylan Clark in three weeks ago in the sing off between him and the vocally superior Kye Sones? This sent the vote to deadlock and it was bye bye Kye. Crucially in casting your vote, you said, “It’s not just a singing competition”. Make up your mind girl!

There seems to be an organised campaign from the judges to get shot of Christopher Maloney, and even his mentor, Gary Barlow, stated on air that he hopes another one of the contestants will win. What sort of mentor is that?

Louis Walsh has called Maloney a diva and says he finds him “bland and boring”, and to some he probably is. After all he is 34 years old (gasp), wears clothes that have been designed for humans and doesn’t wear a baseball cap the wrong way round.

He probably will not win – sorry Chris, but you do look like a sales assistant from PC World - it’s hard to see

him on the international stage wowing the sort of audiences that whoop and holler at the likes of JLS and One Direction. But he has a great voice and there is a definite niche for him with the more mature ballad brigade.

By the way Louis, when it comes to bland and boring, you could take charisma lessons from Ed Miliband.

But there’s the rub, because Maloney will not bring in the millions in revenue through music sales and live performances that will most certainly come from younger, hipper and more visually appealing performers. The voice is important, but not nearly as important as the marketability of the act and that’s what The X Factor - aka Simon Cowell’s music empire – is all about.

Money.

Let’s face it; Christopher Maloney winning this year’s final would be a financial disaster for Cowell So let’s get it straight and see The X Factor for what it really is.

On the one hand it is the promotion of Simon Cowell’s vested interests as the show’s executive producer and from ITV’s viewpoint; it is an entertainment show that is designed to pull in the viewers.

And make no mistake, they will do whatever is necessary to achieve that.

Witness the spats and the seemingly bad tempered squabbles between the judges and the leaked stories of bad blood back stage – all designed to titillate the viewing audience and to provide an incentive to tune in for more of the same.

Then there are the hard luck stories of the contestants themselves. How they were maltreated as kids; had lost a hamster or had been living rough on the streets. These things might be true, but they are personal and private matters and certainly have nothing whatever to do with talent.

And I hate to think about the staging and production costs, all designed to hit you in the face and if anything, detract from the supposed focus of all this attention – the performers themselves.

Unless the X Factor gets back on track and is genuinely there to promote the best talent, which means having judges who are unbiased and sincere and not under orders from their bosses, then it will die a death. Already viewing figures are down a massive 5 million on 2010.

This may mean a different system whereby the acts are mentored by individuals who have nothing to do with the judging panel – two separate entities perhaps?

The one good thing to come out of this is that Tulisa has nobody left to mentor. The bad thing is, she will still get to speak.

A l queria A rriba A l q ueria Rodriguez was not a happy man. Since the declaration of the Alquerian Republic, the Hill People had risen in importance. The use of their Remitroot Liquor to back the Raro, Alqueria’s currency had spiralled them into prominence.

Rodriquez attempted to make an olive oil wine to rival the Remitroot variant. Olives however contain very little sugar. His poor quality olives had to be infused with a glucose solution. An industrial chemist from Murcia agreed to help in exchange for some compromising photographs of himself and an itinerant masseuse from Oslo. The olives were soaked in the glucose solution. Chemicals were added making the whole soluble in olive oil. The result sweet olives. These were then put into nets to give the illusion that they had just been harvested. However with such a new process there were unforeseen side-effects.

The side-effects were not only unforeseen but also unpredictable.

The treated olives spontaneously exploded at random intervals.

Arián Pérez actually ate several of the olives mistaking them for the conventional variety. Mixed with his stomach acids they exploded simultaneously, cauterising a troublesome peptic ulcer, curing an irritable bowel and causing his hair to stand on end in the latest style.

With this failure Rodriquez became a broken man. He took to eating comfort foods and soon became even more obese than usual. The only garment that fitted him was a home-made kaftan. Unfortunately when he attended village functions people thought he was the refreshment tent. He became a recluse, not washing or shaving, his hair grew long and tangled. He peered at the world as if he were a he-goat gazing up from the bottom of a cave.

The discomfort of this existence soon animated him and he decided on direct action. If he couldn’t beat the Hill People and he certainly wasn’t joining them, he would usurp the legitimate government of Alqueria. A coup d’état. He enlisted the help of two sinister characters from the Canary Islands, Señores Forcan and Olam. Two of the foulest and morally vacuous individuals in the western world.

Rodriquez had a lot in common with them and felt at home in their company. Rodriquez’s second in command at his olive mill, Roberto Robles made up the fourth conspirator. Whether Roberto joined this dark collaboration out of a natural sense of loyalty, plain stupidity or in the hope of financial reward is academic. The die was cast and events in Alqueria were about to take a disturbing turn for the worst.

Amalia

We all have our own individual paths in life, some upsy-downsy, some smooth, most a mixture of both, but at one time or another we have all said, ‘I could do with a bit of excitement in my life, I’m in a rut.’

Lately there has been no chance whatsoever of us getting into a rut – in fact I have been hankering longingly for a bit of rut!

However, there are upsides to every adversity if you can but find it. Help and support has been forthcoming from all sides, and I have discovered exactly how good neighbours can be, even on the 60 zillionth request for help, or at that time of night when the shoes can be heard gently snoring, and the slippers have taken up foot duties.

It was during our sojourn in Torrecárdenas Hospital that I met Amalia, 80 kilos, 5 foot on tiptoes, and as sweet, kind and considerate a person as you could wish to meet. As well as ministering assiduously to her very sick husband, she took it on herself to make sure that we understood the ins and outs of 24 hour hospital survival.

Well here we are at the start of another year! All right, I know it’s not January yet, but it is Advent, which is generally recognised as the start of the Church Year. For Advent means “coming” and is the time when we Christians traditionally prepare ourselves to celebrate Christmas, as we remember Jesus coming to Earth to be born in the manger in Bethlehem. But far more importantly, Advent is also the time when we remember that as a part of his teaching, Jesus often spoke of his eventual return, promising that at some future date he would come again to set up his Kingdom; so during Advent we are called upon to prepare ourselves for this event, ensuring that we are ready.

And yes, I know that over the years many cranks have discredited this aspect of Christian teaching by making all manner of extravagant claims, with forecasts of doom and ‘end of the World’ scenarios. But such irrational behaviour on behalf of the few, shouldn’t prevent the rest of us from serious consideration of the very real teaching of Jesus, echoed in these words from the Creed, acknowledged, accepted and regularly recited by Christians from all branches of the Christian Church: “He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.”

So yes, in this Advent season I believe we should all take time to challenge our faith, to ensure that however little we may understand, yet we accept Jesus at his word and prepare ourselves for his unending kingdom. It’s pretty exciting stuff really, and if only we can get to grips with it, this promise makes an incredible difference to our understanding of death and the loss of those we love. And being really prepared for his kingdom can, I suggest, give a whole new meaning to the expression “Happy Christmas”.

What they think they drive!

Moving to Spain almost seven years ago I was warned that many drivers think they are Fernando Alonso; hence swerving in the opposite direction just before they turn, not overtaking until mere inches behind and then sharply pulling in front meaning the overtaken car is now breaking the good old three second rule. Then the option is either to slow down or overtake them again. Overtaking is normally fine as normally they veer off at the next junction anyway.

I have been doing a lot of motorway driving recently and the other day passed the scene of a high speed accident and then minutes later another car hurtled past at 180kmh in the dark when foggy. The dangerous habit of tail-gating normally results in pile ups and when anyone sensibly leaves a good gap (hence my 3 seconds comment earlier) inevitably a couple of cars nip into the space. The peculiar British habit of being polite and letting cars out at junctions completely baffles most drivers despite flashing headlight, smiling and polite arm waving. It’s good fun to watch the incomprehension though.

Now instead of changing a gas bottle on the cooker every couple of months, the gas fire is also on in the lounge and anyone with central heating will be watching the gas or heating oil levels. It makes us all much more aware of our energy usage especially having to lug gas bottles around and shelling out each time for them rather than it silently coming into the house by mains pipe and just as quietly dribbling out the bank account by direct debit.

A dog is for life not just for Christmas! Words we hear every year as animal charities try and reduce the senseless trade in pets when so many lovely cats and dogs are in shelters. Small toy dogs and specialist breeds are snapped up by people often following a fashion trend. People often don’t then spend the few Euros to spay their new pets and any resulting puppies and kittens can be left for someone to find in a bin or rambla.

In a hamlet where I lived the normally lovely couple that were my neighbours asked me countless times how much it was to spay their bitch and then every 7-8 months without fail the poor thing had another litter that would be there for a few days and then disappear in the night. To compound things they had given previous offspring to other neighbours who also did not spay them and so the male offspring mated with its own mother causing horrid birth defects.

TEST DRIVE: TOYOTA GT86

The Nissan 370Z and Audi TT are dead. Long live the Toyota GT86.

Producing an unbiased road test on such a fabulous coupe is virtually impossible because its looks tug at the heartstrings while its interior and what’s under the bonnet make any motorist drool.

It brings back memories of my Nissan 370Z road test a couple of years ago but the GT86 demands considerably more attention.

Any Celica fan is sure to enjoy the GT86, which uses

a gutsy 197bhp Subaru boxer engine, the flat four cylinders laid on their sides, allowing it to be mounted lower in the body.

This lowers the centre of gravity and improves handling.

Inside, the driver slides into a well-appointed luxury cockpit featuring a sculpted dashboard, heated front seats, sat nav, air conditioning and electric front windows.

An excellent driver’s seat hugs in all the right places providing plenty of lumbar support. Occupants look out over a curvaceous

bonnet while a glance in the wing mirrors highlights the aggressive rear haunches, although slightly tamer than a 370Z. This is a welcome return to proper seat of the pants driving for Toyota.

Because the GT86 is so low to the ground drivers have to be reasonably athletic and toned to get in and out without causing embarrassment.

I cope with that but I have been surprised at how middle aged my body has become; the Toyota’s hard suspension really highlighting any excess weight as I judder over the

road surface. The GT86 is a thoroughly engaging and enjoyable coupe to drive and what’s more there’s ample room in the back for passengers.

Its six-speed automatic box has been designed to look like a manual and paddle shifts on the steering wheel allow it to be driven like one. The auto is also slightly more efficient than its manual counterpart, returning 37mpg during the course of the test.

“The Toyota GT86 is a lightweight, fun-to-drive coupe that the Japanese firm hopes will tempt performance car buyers back to the brand,” writes Parkers, the car experts.

“It is aimed squarely at enthusiasts.

Critics have been disappointed recently with the absence of any type of sporty offering from Toyota, the firm foregoing fun in favour of reliable, economical and family-friendly machines.

It’s good news then that the GT86 is here to try to reform the brand’s image. Co-developed with Subaru, the recipe looks good on paper. The first thing to note is that this car is rear-wheel-drive, which for purists is the only way to make a sports car. It has

relatively thin tyres for a modern performance car too, which further serves to improve the driving experience and make it more exciting at lower speeds.”

This roadster is the ideal tonic for recession; it revives low self-esteem. For me, cars have always been a passionate hobby and at a time when my full time role of PR Manager becomes redundant, the GT86 takes my mind off it. Anyone going through a similar situation is well advised to step inside the GT86 and floor it. You’ll feel so much better especially when that unmistakable roar sounds from the oversized chrome exhausts. At a certain rpm the valves open up and the sound resonates throughout the cabin in a similar way to the Mazda MX-5 as you can tell in the video at testdrives.biz.

As a footnote though, diehard speed freaks have

been disappointed with the GT86 because while it is fast, it doesn’t share the gut wrenching force of a Maserati, for instance. This minority will be pleased to hear that Gazoo Racing has added a supercharger and a turbocharger to the 2-litre engine to pump out 315bhp. So that should do the trick lads.

ENCRYPTION

The final part of the series of articles on encryption will be completed by showing number theory, some of the algorithms used and software that uses these algorithms to ensure the safety of your data.

There are two basic types of encryption schemes privatekey encryption and public-key encryption. Private-key schemes, the encryption and decryption keys are the same this means that the sender and receiver must agree on a secret key before they wish to communicate. Public-key schemes, the encryption key is public: that is, anyone (friend or foe) has access to the encryption key, and can encrypt messages. However only the receiving party has access to the decryption key and thus is the only one capable of reading the encrypted messages. Now you have read the difference between a public and private key, what makes these keys so special?

To make sure that your message remains a secret you will need to generate a “key”. The key is a number, a HUGE Prime Number! In the world of mathematics, prime numbers have a unique property, they can be divided by themselves and one ONLY. 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 and13 are the first 7 prime numbers. 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 and 12 are not because they can be divided by either 2, 3 or 5! Using huge prime numbers ensures that the information that is kept secret using complex mathematics.

Now you know what a “key”, how does the public key system of encryption work? This is possibly the best description that I have come across in understanding how it works and here it is: An analogy that can be used to understand the advantages of the ‘Public key’ system is to imagine two people, Alice and Bob, who are sending a secret message through the public mail. In this example, Alice wants to send a secret message to Bob, and expects a secret reply from Bob. Bob and Alice have separate padlocks (Public Keys). First, Alice asks Bob to send his open padlock to her through regular mail, keeping his padlock key to himself. When Alice receives it she uses it to lock a box containing her message, and sends the locked box to Bob. Bob can then unlock the box with his padlock key and read the message from Alice. To reply, Bob must similarly get Alice’s open padlock to lock the box before sending it back to her.

All clear? Maybe not! You could have many identical padlocks that anyone can use in a public place for anyone to send you a message that only you can open. Re-read this a few times over the next week and it will you will get it!

There are programs that use this form of extremely secure encryption and decryption that I am happy to recommend.

PGP is a well seasoned program who’s writers patented a very efficient algorithm for encryption. The downside is that the program is trialware and has time limited after which you have to buy it or stop using it, which is a little naughty if you have encrypted a lot of sensitive information that you now can’t get at!

GPG (GnuPG) which is an open source program (meaning you can read the written instructions - used to create the program if you wanted to!) and free. It doesn’t use the patented algorithm but one equally as effective.

TRUECRYPT is also an open source program but this one doesn’t allow you to encrypt files! It does allow you to encrypt folders and entire disks, including portable memory sticks.

That is it on encryption. I hope, now, that you feel a little more secure with using the internet and keeping your own information safe.

19th Hole Golf was Society...........

Cucador. written, had developed On Thursday 22nd November the 19th Hole Golf Society visited the hallowed turf of Desert Springs.

In near perfect weather conditions 26 members and guests set off on their safari around this very pleasant golf course. Nick Pogson showed the higher handicapper how consistency in your play gets the numbers tumbling from your handicap.

With trouble on the right from the first tee he carefully lined up his tee shot slightly left and with a swing as silky as a ballerinas Tutu he smashed the ball a good 10 yards not quite reaching the ladies tee! Oh drat said he!.

With the course in such excellent condition it was surprising that the winner of this stableford competition only scored 33 points, although in fairness the wind did blow a bit on the back nine.

Really good to see Ron( the rocket) Curtis still enjoying his game and taking pride in producing great shots, for example on the 7th, par 4. green, Ron had put his ball within 2 yards of the pin.

With meticulous care and concentration, and few good puffs on the old pipe, he stepped up to the ball. His trusty 1920•s putter in hand he gently stroked the ball toward the hole, which unerringly travelled a good 3 yards past the hole and to the right. ( well it was a good shot for the purpose of this report.).

Harry(the shark) Eels scored a brilliant two on the 17th chipping in from about 20 yards, well done Harry.

Poor Brian(Dee) Lowden had a dreadful day due to having a bit of a cold which, by the time his round had finished and this

into a severe case of Man Flue, bronchitis, pneumonia and athletes foot. Get better soon Brian.

Good to see a flurry of Ladies out today, with 4 ladies in Two Buggies making a 4 ball and another lady playing with her hubby in another 4 ball, it was like Ladies Day at Wentworth, and that’s all I’m saying because my wife was one of the lady players and I want carry on living a bit longer!!

One small criticism from a member was passed on the green keepers. Big Al( the artist) Greenfield made the point that the light rough caused him a severe vision problem in as much as he couldn’t see over it. The ground staff have just replied suggesting he wears high heels when playing desert Springs again.

WITH BEACHCOMBER JOHN com/en/ Shore Fishing: ‘London Bill’ has been catching a few fish, palometes, sea bass and a 3lb meagre while spinning at Garrucha and Macenas.

‘Spanish Alex’ caught a nice dentex bream recently, looks to be about 10lbs from the photo.

Other reports coming in are for only small catches, palomete, cow bream and the like.

Coarse Fishing: ‘Baza Barry’ has the bit between his teeth after catching a good carp from Negratin some weeks ago and has followed it with a smaller fish but decent catch from that lake, a 12lber.

‘Puentes Ray’ made another visit to Lake Puentes last week, the weather was bright and the water very still. Most of the surface rubbish has gone now and there was very little surface activity from any fish.

On arrival Ray found he had not brought his usual tins of sweetcorn but had picked up two tins of processed peas instead. Not to be beaten he set up a waggler around 13 feet

deep with a size 12 wide gape barbless hook and loose fed with trout pellets and the peas . Bites were slow in coming but eventually landed a few carp.

Interesting to note the fish were of a better stamp, the largest being around 5-6lb. Ray also tried some cocktail sausages that he had brought and on his first cast landed a 2lb barbel.

near Murcia on 22nd November to compete in an Individual Stapleford competition. The weather was perfect for golf and the course in good condition though the slick greens were a little difficult to contend with.

Division one was won by Dave France with 36 points from Tony Harwin on 33 points whilst our captain Derek Leonard, made third place with 31 points.

Division two had a runaway winner in Adrian Ball whose 41 also gave him the overall winner’s prize and a handicap cut. Eddie Vaughan trailed in second with 29 points followed

by Maxine Mayhew took third place with 25 points.

Alf Walker took the first prize in division three with 27 points whilst John Kinch was runner up with 24 points.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Steve Peete on the 4th, Eddie Vaughan on the 5th and Tony Harwin on the 17th.

The only ‘two’ returned on the day was by Tony Harwin.

The following night we went to the prestigious Desert Springs

by captain Derek Leonard who came up with a ‘Glow in the Dark’ competition which consisted of playing 18 holes on the putting greens with only a neon light on a peg at the starting position and the hole. It was great fun and our thanks go to the staff of Desert Springs who also served up a splendid meal afterwards.

The ‘Golfers’ prizes were won by that man again Dave France with 42, followed by Brian Mayhew on 43 and Derek Leonard third also with 43.

The ‘Non Golfers’ prizes were Sue Harwin first with 45 followed

by Lyndsay Leonard second with 49 and Ann Blake third with 49.

The hidden holes winners were Barbara Tapsell and John Blake.

Played at La Serena on Tuesday 20th November 2012 This month’s game was a Texas Scramble competition on the tricky La Serena Course.

The weather forecast was for a sunny and warm day & so it proved, perfect for golf. Some 33 players in 11 teams of 3 took to the course from 9.30am starting from the 1st and the 10th tees.

The course was in good condition following extensive work carried out on the greens.

Normally Texas Scramble would be played with teams of 4 & despite the fact of teams having only 3 players some good scores were returned There were no catering facilities available but the prize presentation was held after the game on the terrace at La Serena. Refreshments were supplied by the staff in the pro shop but we would have appreciated some notice that the bar was closed rather than finding out on the day.

Boat Fishing: ‘Hissing Sid’ went out with his partner with ‘Gnome Graham’ the sea was dead flat with a slight breeze coming off the land. General fishing was good with loads of weavers, pickerels, pandoras, a couple of rockfish and some bogues.

About 11am the breeze about turned and was blowing into the shore but only lightly and this made for some good drifts. As it was only Sid and Graham on board they decided to look at a few places they had not fished before and came across a hole.

They were in about 80 feet of water then it dropped to about 150 then back up to 70 and was only about 200 across and showing some big fish in the bottom. As the drift was so slow it took about 10 minutes or so to drift over and Graham was soon into a trigger on the edge of the hole and Sid got in to a good red snapper at the bottom of the hole that gave a good fight.

They will try this mark again to see if it yields some more good sized fish as some looked very big on the fish finder.

‘Orca Steve’ hasn’t been out and must be getting the shakes by now (I am) he’s been doing boat maintenance so nothing to report.

Steve went down to the aquarium at Roquetas de Mar and say’s its well worth a visit.

They have sharks, congers, morays and lots of different Mediterranean fish including palometes. Great big tanks and a glass walkway tunnel underneath and a ray tank where you can touch the rays. http://aquarium.future-tourism.
