Now you can be fined 601€ EACH for drinking at home in Mojacar!
A group of youths have been fined 601€ EACH for quietly drinking and playing cards at their apartment in Mojacar. As if the stupid fine of 500€ each levied recently against some youths for drinking water on Mojacar beach wasn’t bad enough, the local police have surpassed themselves and gone into a private apartment to fine a group of youths for drinking at home. Pictured during a break in rehearsals are some of the cast members of the Sweet Charity production “Oh! What A Lovely War.” Keep an eye out for the little car in the picture as it will be appearing in various markets, venues and outlets in a variety of areas. You may want to take part in the Sweet Charity NAME THAT CAR contest – details in the next issue of The Advertiser. The winner will receive 2 tickets to see the show at either the Miraflores ballroom at Camping Los Gallardos or the Museo Pedro Gilebert Teatro in Arboleas. You will also receive 2 tickets for a meal in the Miraflores restaurant on Camping Los Gallardos, kindly donated by the Jackson family. Directed by Janet Franklin, the production will be staged in the Miraflores ballroom from Saturday 20th September until Tuesday 23rd
September and again in the Museo Pedro Gilebert on 28th and 29th September. Tickets cost 10€ and are now available from the site shop at Camping Los Gallardos. Other outlets include PC Playa, Mojacar, Connextions in Turre and Olive Properties in Bedar. Tickets for 28th and 29th are available from One Stop Pools (Longos), Girasol, Albox and Essentials in Arboleas. Don´t forget, a Theatre supper can be pre-ordered from the Miraflores from only 6.50€. For supper reservations contact the Miraflores box office on 950 469 522. As this year is the Centenary of the start of WW1 it seems appropriate that all proceeds from the show will go to Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion.

The fine does not state that any noise violation was being infringed, nor that any neighbour had complained. It simply says that a group of youths were congregated together, drinking. The youths have filed a complaint prior to contesting the fines in the courts. La Voz contacted Mayor Rosmari who initially said she knew nothing about the incident, but supported her officers. She added that the townhall had received complaints of 16 people occupying 4 bed apartments, and that her officers had been ordered to crackdown on short term rental flats occupied by “the young”. According to the complaint filed by the lawyer for the youths, the group were in their apartment when, shortly before midnight, they were visited by a local police patrol. The police explained that the youths were playing music and told them to switch it off, as silence is to be observed in Mojacar between the hours of 10pm and 8am.
into the apartment to count heads and issued a fine of 601 euros per person, again using the local bylaw stating that any group of people together at night drinking is illegal.
Only two months after shutting down nine TV stations “because of lack of space on the spectrum”, the Ministry in charge of TV’s has announced they’ll allow five new TV stations to open up. But, and this is fun, it means every TV set in Spain is going to have to be reprogrammed, or you won’t get a signal. Both TV’s and mobile phones use radio waves. To prevent intereference, radio waves are split into “spectrums”. And in order to have a unified EU coverage for 4G mobile phones (the next generation of phones which are coming), the TV signals in Spain all have to be bunched up a bit.
Since everything is being rearranged, the government has gone the whole
hog, jammed everything up, freed up some space reserved for the National Good and will auction off five new TV slots to the highest bidders. (Or best friends). What this means is that your current TDT box will be obsolete. You either buy a new one, or get the current one updated. The Ministry reckons a charge of about 20€ is to be expected if you live in a block of flats (that’s per flat), but admits that for single use installations (ie, your house) it could be considerably more. The change is expected in Spring 2015, just before the elections, and a massive advertising campaign will launch once everyone is sure what’s going to happen. Source: http://www.davidjackson.info
Inheritance Planning Save Money In The UK And Abroad
The British nation pays an extra and avoidable £530million in inheritance tax (IHT) each year according to recent analysis, which should be a warning to everyone - but in particular expats - to look closely at how their estate is set up.
Richard Way, Editor at OverseasGuidesCompany.com said: “The staggering ‘over-payment’ is on account of many UK residents not holding life assurance in trust, which makes it liable to IHT if it means the value of the deceased’s estate exceeds the nil rate band.
“Brits on the verge of moving abroad and those already living somewhere sunny are urged to check exactly where they stand with inheritance. For example, under which jurisdiction, or jurisdictions, will inheritance law and tax be levied? Typically, you could be fined for not paying inheritance tax due within a set period after the date of death. Researching and protecting your estate now, by talking to professionals, will save time and heartache in the future.” Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange. com

Mojacar coppers ordered to issue 5 times as many fines as before
The townhall of Mojacar has a plan to rack in the fines, by ordering the coppers to fine and fine and fine any poor sod with a wallet. This is now official Mojacar policy, after the town budget was spotted to allow for a five fold increase in fines over 2012 levels.
With it, you can gets historical information, tourist guides and snippets of information as you wander about the place. You can also scan the fancy new QR codes that have been put up on signs at interesting points, and that will instruct your phone to download an audioguide to explain what you’re looking at.
instructions to your phone to download and play an audioguide off the internet. The trouble is that neither Android nor Apple include a native QR reader in their systems, meaning you have to download an app to read them, and if you don’t understand that (and many people don’t or can’t be bothered) the whole system is a waste of time. worth of fines, police actually issued 385.000€. And in 2014, the budget expects 385.000€ worth of fines, meaning the real amount (extrapolating from previous years) will be over half a million euros. That’s a five fold increase in two years.
In 2012 the budget expected fines totalling 65,000€ to be issued. In reality, 457.000€ worth of fines were issued, of which 190.000€ were collected.
Union Mojaquero, the political party, says that this is the real reason behind the ridiculous fines levied recently (500€ for drinking water on the beach, anyone?) and that the Mayor is turning her police force into a revenue generating machine.
In 2013, the budget expected 200,000€

Dominoes and darts banned as ‘too noisy’, but fireworks 14 hours a day allowed
BAR customers in Sevilla are not allowed to play dominoes or darts in outside seating areas because of ‘noise nuisance’ – but fiesta groups are allowed to let off fireworks around the clock. Residents have complained about what they consider to be ‘illogical’ bye-laws which on the one hand are ‘ludicrously strict’ and on the other, ‘far too lenient’. As well as a ban on dominoes and darts on outdoor patios of cafés, restaurants and bars, customers are not permitted to eat or drink standing up near these outside terraces, set up TV screens for punters, roll beer-barrels along the ground outside, and drivers can also be fined for ‘over-accelerating’ in their cars because of the ‘noise’ it creates. Yet during the various fiestas in the city, fireworks can be let off between 09.00hrs and 23.00hrs. And live music and discos are permitted in bars provided they do not share the same plot of land as a residential property, such as being underneath or above a flat. At least 100 complaints about the bye-laws have been received by members of the opposition in the PP-led city council. The PP insists that the rules are aimed at ‘reaching a compromise’ between bars and restaurants trying to earn a living, and residents’ ‘right to a good night’s sleep’. This said, most of the rules are likely to go unchecked if broken after dark, since environmental inspectors do not work night shifts, police do not have the necessary equipment to monitor decibel levels, and the city council does not have the means to enforce the bye-laws. News Spanish employment figures are contracts, not people admits government
The government has admitted finally that yes, when they talk about people in employment, they’re actually talking rubbish – they mean employment contracts and so anyone with two jobs is being counted twice. The admission came after a tabled question in Congress by the UPyD party asking for clarification. What this means is that when the government talks about there being 16,950,000 people working in Spain, they actually mean there are 16,950,000 active work contracts under the general labour scheme. It’s a not so subtle difference. How many of those people actually have two or more part time jobs? Nobody knows, there are no official stats. Which is why Eurostat (the EU) says countries aren’t supposed to do it this way, as the only reason for doing it is to pull the wool over the eyes of the populace. It actually gets worse. Unemployment dropped by about 1% in the first quarter of this year. Employed people (sorry! work contracts active!)

dropped by 0.5%. So… fewer unemployed, yet fewer employed. Where are those people? Mainly, fled Spain for abroad. The government sniffed that they’ve always done it this way – at least since 2009 – and have no plans to change it. Source: www.davidjackson.info/

Flamenco-dancing priest brings congregation flocking back to church in Spain
A Roman Catholic priest who dances traditional flamenco from the pulpit in southern Spain has become an internet hit. Jose Planas Moreno has brought parishioners flocking back to the Nuestra Señora del Carmen church in Campanilla, a district of Malaga, with his unusual style of worship. Unlike across the rest of Spain where the Catholic Church has struggled with falling numbers, the priest, who is known as Father Pepe, celebrates mass to a packed congregation with queues regularly forming outside his church. The 66-year-old curate delights the faithful by dancing the sevillanas – a traditional dance linked to flamenco – in the aisle of the church during mass. Female worshippers leap from their pews to take a turn dancing with Father Pepe as he hitches up his white cassock, raises his arms above his head and kicks his heels Videos of a recent mass taken on the local feast day and uploaded onto YouTube and gone viral on social networks and spread Father Pepe’s fame far beyond his parish. “Something happens when I dance,” said Father Pepe, who explained that flamenco is in his blood because his mother was a gipsy. “I love it. It brings me closer to God,” he told Diario Sur, the local Malaga newspaper. In 1997, Father Pepe, who will retire in September, danced in front of the late Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. He was among 3,000 or so gipsies who broke into dance to celebrate the beatification of the first Romany saint, Ceferino Gimenez Mallo, a Spaniard shot by a leftist execution squad during Spain’s Civil War for defending a priest. Traditionally a Roman Catholic stronghold, Spain has seen church attendance plummet in recent years and a sharp fall in the number of those choosing to become clerics has left half the nation’s parishes without priests. A recent survey showed only 72 per cent of Spaniards defined themselves as Catholic, a drop of eight per cent in a decade. The survey also found that those who said that they never went to church rose from 7.5 per cent in 2002 to 48.6 per cent in 2012.

Back pain
Back pain is a common problem that affects most people at some point in their life. It usually feels like an ache, tension or stiffness in your back. Back pain is not generally caused by a serious condition and, in most cases, it gets better within 12 weeks. It can usually be successfully treated by taking painkillers and keeping mobile. Types of back pain Backache is most common in the lower back, although it can be felt anywhere along your spine, from your neck down to your hips. Specific back pain includes; • neck pain • whiplash • shoulder pain • frozen shoulder • ankylosing spondylitis
Feel Great
• slipped disc • sciatica When to see your doctor. Most cases of back pain get better on their own and you do not need to see a doctor. However, you should visit your doctor if you are worried about your back or you are finding it

difficult to cope with the pain. You should seek immediate medical help if your back pain is accompanied by: • fever of 38ºC (100.4ºF) or above • unexplained weight loss • swelling in the back • constant back pain that doesn’t ease after lying down • pain in your chest or high up in your back • pain down your legs and below the knees • loss of bladder or bowel control • inability to pass urine • numbness around your genitals, buttocks or back passage • pain that is worse at night These are known as ‘red flag symptoms’ and could be a sign of something more serious. Top 10 tips for a healthy back. 1. Exercise your back regularly. Walking, swimming (especially backstroke) and using exercise bikes are all excellent ways to strengthen your back muscles. 2. Always bend your knees and your hips, not your back. 3. Never twist and bend at the same time. 4. Always lift and carry objects close to your body. 5. Try to carry larger loads in a rucksack and avoid sling bags. 6. Maintain a good posture. Avoid slumping in your chair, hunching over a desk or walking with your shoulders hunched. 7. Use a chair with a backrest. Sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest. Change how you sit every few minutes. 8. Quit smoking. It is thought that smoking reduces the blood supply to the discs between the vertebrae and this may lead to degeneration of these discs. 9. Lose any excess weight. 10. Choose a mattress suited to your height, weight, age and sleeping position.

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. A question that seems to be cropping up more and more is one about bandwidth. To be more precise, the bandwidth relating to internet TV. It has been a while since we discussed what bandwidth is but as that was some time ago, maybe a short reprise is in order. Bandwidth is the rate at which data can come down the wires to you. I know that this is an over simplification, but as a place to start I’m hoping that it is a good one. In other articles I have tried to help you to understanding just how data is transferred – in packets rather than a ‘stream’ of 0’s and 1’s, but that these packets of information when coming down to you, create the illusion of a flowing stream. If you can remember your school Physics lessons (remember when it was Physics, Chemistry and Biology instead of just ‘Science’?) when you were taught that where air is ‘spongy’ and be compressed or expanded, water had a much more dense molecular structure and didn’t like being compressed? Well, you can imagine the data stream that makes up ‘Eastenders’ or any other program, being the same! My favourite analogue is one of water coming down a hose pipe from a tank or a pump. When it trickled down the hose, it trickles out of the end. When it comes down with greater force, it gushes out, but it will reach a point when no matter how much pressure the pump generates or how great the weight of water is in the tank, the pressure in the pipe can’t increase without the pipe splitting! The idea behind data transfer is the same, but without a split pipe! Later on I will refer you back to this point because it is extremely important. The next part of this
article has to do with commerce, or to be more accurate, the cost of renting webspace. Everything in this world has a price apart from humility and compassion (and there is precious little of either!). Webspace is a commodity just like everything else and has a price. Websites charge for 2 things – the amount of space you can have (makes sense really) and the amount of data that they send out to anyone that looks at a website or downloads anything from their servers (a computer dedicated to storing your websites). This second cost is just the same monthly internet access costs that you have, but in their case, the bills are much higher! I have seen charges as low as 2.99€ and as high as 75€ per month and still have limits as to how much information can be transferred! Now you know this, it is easier to see that websites can only stream a certain amount of information to you. Also video has many time more information than audio but together they gobble masses of bandwidth per second. When 10 people are watching ‘Corrie’ then there will be no problem, but when 1000 people are watching it, there has to be a certain amount of sharing going on. When million’s of people are watching dozens of channels all coming from the same site, then this sharing becomes a problem! Next week I will continue this article by including ‘real world’ examples to try to explain what the actual problems are with the hope that next time your internet TV is ‘buffering’ you will be able to be a little kinder to your small black box. So until then I will be at Jack’s Bar in Albox for my usual Friday afternoon computer clinic, but can also be contacted at the number or email address below.

‘Bomber’ Harris
Arthur Harris was born in 1892; his parents didn’t think him clever enough to go to Eton as his brothers had before, so gave him the choice of joining the army or going to the colonies. He chose the latter and went to Rhodesia, successfully trying his hand at gold mining and tobacco farming. The small matter of the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 was a defining point for Harris and he first joined a Rhodesian regiment. In 1915 he returned to Britain joining the Royal Flying Corps which was then part of the British Army. In his Sopwith Camel he shot down five enemy
Lost and, not, found!
We spend, on average, just over a year of our lives looking for things that we’ve lost? Now that’s a long time, but it’s the things that we lose that fascinate me. Airports have reported that in any one week around 12000 lap tops are left lying around in departure lounges. How do people manage to forget their lap top? A cuddly toy I can understand, maybe even a kindle if you’re reading it before boarding, but a whole lap top? Well, that’s quite a feat. The most commonly lost items include things like nail clippers, sunglasses and mobile phones. Well, yes I can see how anyone could easily lose any of these and not realise. But there are some things that really take some explaining. I’d be willing to bet that you’ve never lost a bridge for example. It’s been done! There’s a town in the Czech Republic that accidentally misplaced a 10 ton bridge. I can see by the look in your eyes that you don’t believe me, but really, it’s true. The town woke up one morning and it was gone. People looked everywhere, as you do, but couldn’t find it. To be fair, they hadn’t actually lost it, it had been stolen, but nevertheless, isn’t that just a bit embarrassing when a group of chaps come along, bold as brass, and dismantle your bridge overnight? Even more embarrassing, it’s not the first time. A few years previously a railway company noticed that there was something not quite right about a stretch of their railway. On careful inspection and after a lengthy consultation process, they came to the conclusion that the bridge had been stolen. Another example of the fleet footedness of organisations in a crisis! To make matters worse, the company said that they thought the bridge had been taken for, “personal use”. If you know an avid bridge collector who has, amongst their exhibits, a 4 ton railway bridge, give the authorities a nudge-you may be in for a reward. Maybe we could all take advice from someone called Professor Solomon. He has come up with a 10 point plan for finding things; absolute load of tosh of course, but one of his suggestions is that we sit and meditate about what’s lost and its whereabouts will come to us. I know, let’s all meditate about common sense, maybe then some people will find it-finally! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

planes and ended the war a Major. Harris witnessed the futility and slowness of trench warfare and thought that aerial bombing was a more efficient way of doing things. Harris stayed in the forces after the war making Squadron Leader in the newly formed Royal Air Force. He served in the British Empires troubled hotspots; Mesopotamia, Persia, Palestine and the North West Frontier in India where locals rudely fought against their imperial masters. Exciting new devices were used such as delayed action bombs and poison gas. Some of the top brass resigned in protest at the use of these inhumane weapons but Harris simply stated that ‘the only thing the Arab understands is a heavy hand!’ Stationed in Palestine in 1936 Harris suggested that a 500lb bomb dropped on each of the troublesome villages would satisfactorily solve the problem of any revolting Arabs.
He rose through the ranks becoming Air vice Marshall. For a man thought not clever enough by his parents, Harris set up the RAF’s night training programme and wrote a paper on the role RAF would play in event of a major war. By the start of WW2 Harris was Deputy Chief of Air Staff. Bombing was not yet part of Britain’s war strategy as navigational skills were not up to long flying missions and less than 1 bomb in 10 landed within 5 miles of the intended targets. Things changed in 1942 when Harris became commander in chief of Bomber Command. Harris had studied German bombing tactics from the Spanish Civil War and correctly reasoned that mass destruction of civilian targets would hasten the end of the war. A Professor Lindemann thought the same, suggesting to Churchill that ‘area’ or carpet bombing of cities would put a huge strain on enemy resources due to the subsequent repairs needed and also cause a massive drop in morale. Men and machinery would also be diverted from the frontline to defend cities. Thus the term ‘total war’ came into
existence and these ideas were quickly put into use by ‘Bomber’ Harris. The first ever 1000 bomber raid took place over two nights at the end of May 1942; Cologne was targeted with 1400 tonnes of mostly incendiaries dropped. 2500 fires were started causing massive damage. 18 months previously the Luftwaffe had tried the same in the Blitz but with much less effect. Harris also gained another nickname, ‘butcher’ as he used statistics to estimate potential Allied losses. 43 planes were lost and it was deemed a success. A year Hamburg was attacked in the same way, nicknamed the Hiroshima of Germany as 10 square miles of the city was obliterated. These attacks severely weakened Germany however ‘Bomber’ Harris will also be remembered as the man who destroyed the beautiful medieval city of Dresden in February 1945, in the dying days of the war. Churchill wrote a month later ‘The destruction of Dresden remains a serious query against the conduct of Allied bombing!’

MOVING BACK TO THE U.K. DUE TO ILL HEALTH LEAVING A PROPERTY IN SPAIN ON THE MARKET
Q. My mother and father need to move back to the u.k due to very bad health, with my mother moving into a home immediately on her return. They own a house and a bank account in Vera. Have you got any recommendations of things I should be thinking about from a legal point of while I am in Spain to help them organise their return. A. Absolutely. I would at least address the following matters: 1. Make sure there Spanish wills are in good order. Even if they are, it may be time to reconsider the clauses. If for example one of your parents is very ill it may not be convenient for the other partner to name him /her beneficiary. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure Internet banking is set up on their Spanish bank account. 4. Your parents may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with their Spanish assets. 5. Look in to the advantages/ disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on waiting for a better price From a tax point of view if they
are resident and over 65 it is in their advantage to sell before they lose their resident status in Spain as they are entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. When you get back to England start working on an enduring power of attorney to be used in the u.k. Very important: The above are the essential things that need to be looked into but I recommend that you and your parents visit their solicitor in Spain to run through their situation together before going back to the u.k. If you are not comfortable with their solicitor, simply make an appointment with a different solicitor but take all your paperwork with you (you must at least take copy of title deeds, NIE numbers, rates bills and copy of wills) . Depending on the circumstances, paperwork etc. it may be advantageous to take further actions or none at all. In any case it will be convenient for you to put a face to the solicitor and go through things together with him/ her and your parent to avoid nasty surprises regarding documentation in the future. News Spain Registers 0.23% Increase in Housing Stock in 2013
Around half a million new homes per year were added to the official housing statistics from 2001 to 2009, but since 2010 the increase in new homes has moderated every year and, according to recent data released by the Ministry of Development, the total housing stock in Spain stood at 25,441,306 in 2013, which is just 0.23% more (+58,891) than in 2012, when the total was 25,382,415. This is the smallest increase registered in the comparable time series, which began in 2001, and is a reflection of the decline in property development activity. Gonzalo Bernardos, economist and director of Máster Real Estate of the University of Barcelona, describes this limited increase in the housing stock as “perfectly rational” because the market has yet to purge the excesses of the past. In his opinion, “the future of the construction industry lies in rehabilitation instead of building”, which will ultimately drive the housing market. He said: “This will cause an insufficient supply in middle and upper class locations that will lead to price increases in 2015 and 2016 in the region of 10%.” The minimum increase in the housing stock reported by the Ministry of Development is due mainly to the segment of ‘non principal’ properties, which have fallen by about one million units. The Ministry breaks down the Spanish housing stock into ‘principal’ homes (used as the main residence of one or more households and occupied
by these most of the year) and ‘non principal’ (temporary). Thus, the Ministry stated that the total figure of 25,441,306 is divided into 18,991,031 principal homes and 6,450,275 non principal. The second segment has reduced most compared to 2012 (by 7.26 million) while, in contrast, the number of principal homes rose from 18.11 to 18.99 million. All regions and cities registered increases in housing stock numbers in 2013, although in many cases very slight. For example, in Murcia the number of houses rose by only 873 units, from 783,002 to 783,875, and in the Canary Islands by just less than 1,000 (from 1,044,637 to 1,045,619). Asturias, the Balearic Islands and Extremadura also stood among those regions with increases of less than 2,000 homes. In contrast, stood Andalucía (+9,581) and Madrid (+9,405). With regard to the total number of unsold homes by region, and in keeping with pure demographic variables, Andalucía continues to lead with 4,394,515 homes, followed by Catalonia (3,888,233) and Valencia (3,161,095). Madrid recorded a total of 2,932,915 homes. The regions with fewest homes are La Rioja, with 200,805, and Navarre, with 314,691. As for the number of non principal homes, Andalucía again leads the ranking, with 1,113,306, although just ahead of Valencia (1,104,812). Source: http://news.kyero.com/

Only 36% of Spanish Families Properties of the week Went on Holiday in 2013
Only 36% of Spanish families went on holiday in 2013, which is 4% less than in 2012, while the average expenditure per family was around 1,000 euros, according to the results of a study carried out by AIS Consulting Group.
two regions to take most holidays last year, with 49% and 47% of households respectively in 2013. In contrast, the regions where families took the least number of holidays, were Valencia (20%), Galicia (22%) and the Balearic Islands (28%).
The number of Spanish families who earmark part of their budget for an intended holiday has been reduced with the crisis. The data from the study showed that, between 2010 and 2011, the decline was 1.8%, and between 2012 and 2013 the decline was 4%. Overall, 8.4% fewer families have taken a holiday between 2010 and 2013.
While fewer families are going on holiday, those who did decide to do so in 2013 increased their spending by 6.4% compared to 2010. Thus, if the average national spending was 940 euros in 2010, three years later it was over 1,000 euros.
Extremadura registered the highest percentage of families who went on holiday last year, with 55% of families. However, they were at the same time the region to spend the least of their budget for these trips, with an average expenditure of just slightly over 550 per year. Murcia and Madrid were the other
El Economista reported that, compared to 2012, the families that increased their holiday budget most were those from the Basque Country, with their expenditure rising about 40%, from 840 euros a year earlier to 1,200 euros in 2013. Conversely, holiday spending reduced most compared to 2012 in Navarra, Rioja and Catalonia, by 30% in the first two and by 20% in Catalonia. Source: http://news.kyero.com/

With nearly 2,500 million euros in the first half of 2014, investment grew by 110%, according to data from consultancy firm BNP Paribas Real Estate. The interest of these foreign operators, together with the activity of the newly created Socimi, and Spanish REITs, has resulted in a surge in nonresidential investment in Spain during the first half of the year, in annual terms. Retail assets accounted for the largest market share, with 38% of the total invested, followed by hotels (29%) and offices (27%). Although national investment has grown by 150%, with acquisitions totalling 810 million euros in the first six months of the year, 65% of the total has come from foreign investment. Of particular significance has been the investors in the Spanish market from non-traditional areas, such as China, Latin America or the Persian Gulf. During this six month period, institutional investors have also confirmed their interest in the Spanish market, leaving the private investors, both national and international, with only 18% of the market share, 12 points less than in 2013. Institutional funds and REITs accounted for 64% of

the investment in the six months, and Socimi activity is expected to accelerate in the second half of 2014, and in 2015. In the chapter on sellers, the report highlights the activity of financial institutions, either themselves or through their property branches, and also real estate companies. El Mundo reported that the strong competition for prime assets, which have been virtually exhausted in the office and retail segments of the two major cities, Madrid and Barcelona, has had a compression effect on prime yields. Thus, the prime office yield has gone from 5.8% to 5.6% in Madrid and from 6% to 5.75% in Barcelona in the last quarter. According to Francisco Manchon, director of investment for BNP Paribas Real Estate in Spain: “All indications are that during the remainder of 2014 the same frantic activity in the investment market that has been taking place since late 2013 will continue. An improvement in the absorption of spaces is expected at the beginning of 2015 with a subsequent improvement expected on the return on assets. However, a new compression in rates of return on core assets in prime locations is expected, both office and retail. The sector is undergoing a diversification towards opportunities in secondary markets and value added real estate.”

desert baking
Why two sisters started baking in a dessert The land in Los Monegros in Aragon in northeastern Spain, is almost as arid as a desert. In the 1960s, it was one of the backdrops chosen for spaghetti western films. Yet for two twenty-something Spanish sisters, it has become the perfect place for their farming and bread-baking business. Ana Marcen, the elder of the two, says she had no previous experience
in agriculture. “I studied Greek and Latin and used to work in an orchestra as a singer.” Her younger sister Laura used to work as a waitress and studied engineering. Their business idea grew out of something their uncle told them - that in times gone by, the bread in this part of Spain tasted different. It was a

flavour he missed. The sisters say their uncle was “a very curious person, he used to ask himself why bread didn´t taste any longer as it used to.” They discovered that a type of wheat seed, known as Aragon 03, had been the secret behind the region’s distinctly-flavoured bread. They found an elderly couple who still had a small quantity of the Aragon 03 seed. The Marcens bought two bags of the seeds - and from that their business has grown. The concept of their business is to control the entire bread-making process. They grow the wheat, mill the flour and bake the bread, muffins and other bakery snacks. “Unlike other traditional bakeries that just sell organic products, we control the whole process”, says Laura ‘You must be mad’ They set up their business in 2007, just before Spain’s economic and financial crisis hit. They were able to get a bank loan of €250,000, ($335,000; £200,000) which they think would be harder to come by in today’s post-recession climate. In the first year, their business lost lots

of money, but by the third year they broke even. Now, seven years after they first started farming and baking, they own two bakeries and sell their products in eight others. Whatever profit they make, they reinvest in their business as they want to expand and sell online. “Many people told us we were crazy for trying to run a business like ours in a (dry) place like this. But we found out that the seed we grow is perfect for this climate”, says Laura.“People think that there is no life in Los Monegros, but in reality the region is rich in plants and wildlife. “As my uncle used to say, you have to bend your knees and look closely. For example, I see opportunities where others don’t.” Family idea, family business From the very start, this was a familyrun business. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves that we are underlings.”Julius Caesar. Cassius rejected the popular theory relating to astrology. The fault here is cancer and the film looks at how two teenagers, in particular, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters deal with their afflictions and the effects it has on their relationships with their parents.
Directed by Josh Boone and produced by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen. The film is based on the hugely successful book by American writer, John Green. Shailene Woodley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager and The Descendants) stars as Hayley. Ansel Elgort (Carrie, Tommy Ross and Caleb Prior) plays Augustus.
Affliction by Peter van Houten (Willem Dafoe). Haxel wants assurance that at the end of the book the survivors will find happiness and not mourn for the rest of their days. It is important to her because it mirrors her state of dying and she wants to feel that her own parents will have a life without her once she has gone. Gus encourages contact with the writer and in spite of Hazel’s illness the two of them with Mrs Lancaster in tow, fly to Amsterdam hoping for answers.
The experience proves a shock and disappointment for both of them. The writer i s a drunkard, rude and callous man. It seems that most of us, when asked why we chose to retire to Spain, give reasons that include the Sunshine and the more relaxed way of life. Why then, I frequently wonder, do so many of us spend so much time complaining about the excessive heat and the interminable delays we experience whenever we have to deal with officialdom? Are these not two key reasons for our being here? Some of us, it seems, are never satisfied! So it came as quite a refreshing change when I was recently reminded of words St Paul wrote to the Church in Philippi, saying “I’ve learned to be content with every circumstance of life” – not bad for a man who’d been wrongly beaten and imprisoned, besides enduring all manner of other hardships! But how great is contentment – the ability to accept and make the most of whatever life throws at us. And it’s a characteristic that all we who claim to be Christian should know, as Paul did. For an essential part of our faith is the acceptance that God is in control, and that therefore, however difficult personal circumstances may seem, we can afford to relax and leave the worrying to Him. The trouble is that, so often, rather like St Peter, we become distracted by the circumstances around us and take our eyes off Jesus, so find ourselves sinking. So let’s take heart and look beyond the problems that surround us, to see Christ stretching out to us and giving us the power to rise above our difficulties, and so to relax, content in whatever situation we may face, knowing our Heavenly Father cares and controls. it will be a Spaniard who has punched in a wrong number, and no, I am not Loli, nor Ana, nor even Juan or José. Or it will be Movistar trying to encourage me to spend money on a moneysaving scheme of one sort or another – What makes them think that by spending money I am going to save money? Above all, I hate a machine that is cleverer than I am. There used to be a procedure by which (if you knew what to do) you could check to see how much credit there was on the phone. It didn’t like the mastery that this gave me, so it withdrew this facility. However, I was not to be denied so easily; I took it back the place of its birth, the Movistar shop. Here the Spanish salesgirl, the Mistress of the Mobile, plus a suitably juvenile Techno-Geek, fought with it for a full morning
before announcing that it had them beat, and I’d better send it back to Movistar. It’s latest wheeze was to withdraw all signs of life. It sat, completely blank, and no amount of plugging into the charger, battering its buttons or threatening it with the hot wash vigorous cycle with spin would persuade it into any form of communication. The Movistar shop having disappeared I took it into Euronics, and handed it to the boss, explaining that it was not Funcion-ing. He took it from me, fiddled around with it for a few seconds, and then met my eye with the kindly gaze of a father towards his much loved, but mentally deficient daughter. ‘You have to put some money on it.’ He explained in a soft and gentle tone. ‘Oh.’ I answered, inadequately. I swear I heard the damn thing chuckle as josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk he returned it to me!

By All the Saints
I was looking at train times the other day and I suddenly thought . . . who the heck was Saint Pancras? It’s a strange sounding name. Like a lot of other towns, villages and landmarks in Britain that bear the names of saints, we just accept them and almost never wonder just who these people were, what they did and why they deserved to be canonised. So I checked. Pancras was a Roman who lived at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth centuries AD, but his life was a short one because at the age of fourteen he was beheaded for his refusal to renounce his Christian faith. How one of our most iconic railway stations came to be named after him I really don’t know, but surprisingly I found that the parish church in the Devonshire village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor is also named after and dedicated to him. There you go. Pretty useless information I suppose, but it got me thinking about other locations and Cornwall in particular, which is said to contain more towns and villages named after saints, than anywhere else in the country In this picturesque and fascinating county you will come across such places as St Just; St Breock; St Keyne; St Mawes; St Mellion; St Juliot; St Blazey; St’s Columb

Major and Minor; St Agnes and St Buryan . . . and this is just a small sampling of the many holy men and women represented here, each with an intriguing story attached. Either the early Cornish were extremely pious or they could not be bothered to think of any other suitable names, leaving them time to get on with the important business of inventing things like pasties and stargazey pie. St Austell is one of the largest towns in the county and is well known for its china clay quarries. To be honest the only thing I really need to know about this saint is the famous brewery that’s named after him and its excellent beer . . . especially Proper Cool IPA and Hicks Special Draught. Luvverly! I find it interesting to note that the likes of St Neot and St Ives (a take on the actual name of Ia) also have place names in towns geographically far removed from Cornwall and interestingly (yawn) both can be found in Cambridgeshire. But not so interesting is the fact that I have no idea why or what the connection is if any and I haven’t taken the trouble to find out. St Neot has a particularly quaint legend attached to him. The Cornish traditionally believed that he was only fifteen inches high and spent much of his day up to his neck in water in a well during his devotions. Each day he was happy to be lowered into the well, but on being hauled out was pretty brassed off and grumpy. I wonder if this is where Walt Disney got his inspiration for two of the characters in the film Snow White. It is said that Neot had a strange way with animals and
birds, and worked miracles with them. These are portrayed in the stained glass windows of St Neot’s Church. Other tales have him actually standing a towering four feet tall, but either way let’s face it, he was never going to be considered for the ancient Cornwall police force. It is said that he began his adult life as a soldier however, which is hard to believe. Mind you where he lacked the ability to engage in sword fights, he could have made up for it by being a whiz at knee capping. Nevertheless, he got fed up with being paraded around as the regimental mascot and decided to join a monastery for a spot of monking. He took to it instantly, with his fellow monks coming to regard him as near to perfection as a man could get . . . Apart from one small dirty habit. St Michael is one of the candidates regarded as the patron saint of Cornwall, with the magical St Michael’s Mount a national treasure. It rises majestically out of the sea in Mounts Bay and is connected to Marazion by a causeway that is accessible only at low tide. As an aside, Marazion – Mazarron . . . could there be a connection here? Especially with both locations having an abundance of long disused mines – tin, copper, zinc, lead, iron and silver in Cornwall and iron, lead, silver, copper and alum around Mazarron. But what I have found is a plethora of largely forgotten saints, each with an extraordinary story attached to their godly lives, and each one revered enough by the inhabitants of Cornwall and other locations, to honour them in this very special way.

So That’s What You Have To Do!
I’ve had a couple of incidents recently which have left me feeling a bit silly. You know the sort of thing, where you push like billy-o on an unyielding door until you have built up an audience, and then notice ‘Tirar’ emblazoned on the doorframe in 2 inch high letters. One of these incidents involved the mobile phone. I acknowledge the usefulness of mobiles, but I am not a lover of them, neither personally nor in the hands of others. We have 2 mobiles, one each, and I avoid using them unless it is absolutely necessary; I answer them if I happen to hear them, only to find that 99 times out of 100

viewpoint ¡Kalvino Estupendo!
Kalvino Cabezagrande appeared in Alqueria early one sun drenched morning. Immaculately dressed, teeth gleaming he stood straightbacked, one foot resting easily on the brickwork of the town’s fountain. Cradled in his arms a small kid-goat which he had courageously rescued from a perilous cliff. On his back a five year-old child whom he had found wandering in the sierra. Kalvino’s teeth glinted once more as a ray of sunlight fell upon him. ‘Kalvino Estupendo’ or ‘Super Kalv’ had honoured Alqueria with his presence. No one knows where Kalvino comes from, no one knows where he returns to after his day’s toil is done. He is a professional do-gooder or he would be if he accepted payment. The villagers of southern Spain feel blessed when he arrives, unannounced, righting wrongs, protecting the weak and generally making a nuisance of himself. If there were good deeds to be done Super Kalv did them. He was of course universally loathed by the people of Alqueria. In Alqueria a good deed done invariably meant a bad one for the opposing barrio. The righteousness of Kalvino united Alqueria in their hatred for him. Alqueria is out of step with the rest of humanity and by definition at loggerheads with a humanitarian such as Super Kalv. Kalv’s ‘good deeds’ involved trying to squash Loco Paco’s pet Saharan Dung Beetle, Benjy thinking it was a pest. Loco Paco hurled a collapsible oil fired bidet at him causing Kalvino to seek shelter in the Bar La Casa Devante. Here he promptly lectured Antonio Poyato on the evils of drink. Poyato in return acquainted Kalv to
the dangers of lecturing random drunks on their alcohol consumption and sent him back into the street swiftly followed by an empty Remitroot bottle. These occurrences were unfortunate but what followed was ill-advised and fool hardy. Diving for cover as the wayward Remitroot Rum bottle passed safely overhead Kalvino found himself at the feet of Manuela. Now, a more discreet individual would have got up, greeted her and walked on. Not our Super Kalv. Realising who she was and being familiar with her reputation he began a discourse into her life-style and morality or rather lack of it. Super Kalv was never seen nor heard of from that day on. The people of Alqueria closed ranks behind Manuela and Kalvino Cabezagrande was never mentioned again. As a matter of record the kid-goat that was cradled in Kalv’s arms was tethered to the cliff edge so it could benefit from the morning breeze and help cure a nasty case of croup. It died the next day for want of the healing mountain air. The five year old child on his back was quite happily on a nature ramble before Super Kalv hove into view and ‘rescued her’.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that
tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

What Atmospheres Would You Like To Create?
Take into account the different atmospheres you want to conjure up, too. The answer you give will help you decide how bright the lighting needs to be – and how easy to dim, too. Overall, it’s worth fitting and buying lights that can be dimmed – from pendants right through to table lamps. Most stores sell a range of table lamps now that can be dimmed, just as most sell low energy bulbs that can be dimmed, too. Have you got space for wall lights? They are an excellent way to provide some soft, lowlevel light, creating atmosphere and warmth.

How Big Is Your Room?
Getting the proportions of your lights right is just as important as the quality of light they’ll give. Have you got room for a big chandelier, or maybe a compact spotlight will be more suitable? How high is your ceiling? If it is low, then a flush or semi-flush light may be the best choice. For larger rooms with high ceilings, a multi-arm light or chandelier with five or more bulbs would be a good buy.
Is The Lighting Balanced?
This is an important question, especially if the room is large, or zoned into different areas (such

as a dining area, a lounging area and a home office). What you need to work out is if each part of the room has adequate lighting for its purpose, but ensure that no particular area will overpower any of the other areas, once all the lights are on. Ideally, each different area will have its own pendant and accent lighting.
What Colour Light Do You Want?
Consider the type of light you want to create when designing your lighting scheme or buying new lamps. For example, a north-facing room is likely to suffer from a lack of daylight, so it’s worth either investing in halogen bulbs, which mimic daylight or, in a room that doesn’t need to be brightly lit, in tinted light bulbs that will give off a warmer glow. Equally, lampshades will affect the light that an ordinary bulb gives off - not only by diffusing it, but also by tinting it.
Will They Suit The Room?
Lights aren’t just practical – they can be hugely decorative, too. So, when choosing lighting for your living room, ask yourself these questions: do the fittings’ basic materials match the other fittings (such as door handles, window furniture) in the room; do the fittings suit the rest of my scheme; do the fittings broadly suit the age and period of the house?
In Which Direction Should The Light Go?
Lampshades, particularly opaque or darkly coloured ones, throw light both up and downwards. Pale coloured, translucent lampshades throw a soft light in all directions. Spotlights highlight a particular area of a room. Wall lights throw light softly (if dimmable) either up or down… and so on.

Great Food at Great Prices
It’s important to get the light going in the direction you want it to. So, what do you want to get from the lights? If you want to highlight the height and decorative effects of your ceiling, you’ll want to include uplighters. If you want to properly light a desk area, you’ll need a desk lamp or spotlight. If you want to create a cosy corner, you’ll need a low set or table lamp that throws a soft light just in one area of a room. Not sure what you want? Experiment as much as possible with the lights you already have to get a better idea.
Are There Problem Areas?
Are there dark corners in your living room that need extra light? Floor and table lamps can be useful in providing pools of light throughout the day and evening and are an attractive way of brightening up darker areas.
How Can I Draw Attention To An Artwork? Lighting is the best way to pick out a picture or piece of sculpture. For pictures, choose opal-effect bulbs, which reduce the glare on the glass and provide a more subtle effect. For sculpture, a subtly positioned, adjustable spotlight – usually in a corner at ceiling height - will show it off.
On Friday, Fresh Cod or Haddock & chips is served with a choice of Mushy Peas, Garden Peas, Salad or Coleslaw from 4.50€ and on Sunday the traditional Roast with a choice of 4 meats from 5.50€ plus a range of homemade starters and desserts are available. Forum Golf Society
Hat trick for Peter Harrington Forum Golf Society´s third visit of the year to Desert Springs on July 25th saw Peter Harrington record his third victory in a row at the same venue, obviously a course that suits him perfectly. On a day which saw some very good scoring Peter shot a net 67 to edge out second placed Terry Davies on countback, with Alan Crofts (68) one further back in third. Terry moore (69) was fourth, Mick Smith (71) fifth & Kevin Bircher (72) sixth.
There were five nearest the pin prizes won, going to Peter Harrington, Terry Moore, Mick Smith, Alan Crofts & Terry Davies, with big hitting Pat Garrigan again taking the longest drive, and again with just a three wood. Our special thinks to Campbell Lamont Golf of Denia who sponsored the day, ensuring that every player in the field went home with at least one prize, very much appreciated by all Forum members. Peter Harrington´s victory also saw a change at the top of our Claret Jug leaderboard, with him now moving 7 points clear at the top. Forum´s upcoming fixtures are 8th August Common Northerners v Southern Softies Matchplay at Aguilon 15th August Stableford (and Ford League Qualifier) at Aguilon 29th August Stableford (and Ford League qualifier) at Marina For further information, contact Phil Elam on 666 847840 / philjelam@yahoo.co.uk, or see www.forumgolfsociety.webs.com

2014 Summer Competitions The Reliant Trophy, the ‘Drawn Triples’ was shortened). The top six players who had achieved their best scores from a minimum twelve games played. The teams were drawn for the final on Friday 11th July The worthy winners were John Fitzgerald, Jim Pike and Ron Lloyd beating another strong team, Wayne Roberts, Chris Ewer and Terry Rogers. Thanks to our Lady Captain for the presentation of Trophy and Brian Hughes for photographs. The Eleanor McCraw (Drawn Pairs) was also shortened as with The Reliant Trophy. This time the top four players from minimum eleven games were drawn to play the final on 14th July. There was a draw between Jim Pike and Wayne Roberts. It was agreed by players as there were no rules to cover this, that a two end play off was carried out. Both played well, Jim won. The final was won by John Fitzgerald and Maureen Sheriff against Jim Pike and Bryan Thompson. An exciting close game, with a well done to Maureen who gained her first win in an ABC competition. Stuart Beetham was kind enough to present the trophy to the
winners and taking the photographs. Both competitions were supported well and proved with the regular attendance of entries, that this is the probable way to continue in the future. Thanks to John and Stuart for sending me the information to write this report Vic Parsons Press Secretary

Grillstream technology Unique Fat Catch system Warming Rack Thermometer Heat Dispersers Independent Jet Flame Ignition (to all burners) porcelain Enamelled Steel Grills Cast Iron Griddles
As seen on dragon's den, Grillstream Technology eradicates flare-ups that can often burn food and damage the barbecue. This is achieved by having unique double U-shaped grills which stream oils and fat generated during cooking, away from the heat source. This allows for more succulent and healthier food, while still keeping that authentic barbecue taste.
