News SAVE TO THE MAx Insurance Specialist Mijas wildfire ‘caused by • Home arsonists’ destroys two houses • Car
TWO houses have burnt down and over 600 hectares of countryside destroyed in another fire in Mijas (Málaga) – the second in less than a fortnight. One of these houses was completed gutted inside, as seen in the picture below. Mayor Ángel Nozal says it was the ‘most dangerous’ he had seen in his 30 years in politics in the Costa del Sol town, and numerous residents – at
least 150 according to firefighters - had to be evacuated. It took over 16 hours to bring under control after breaking out in the La Roza area. The blaze is thought to be the work of arsonists, since it was started in two points – next to the La Cala football ground and in the Fuente Leal area. Thick clouds of black smoke obscured the view in Fuengirola and could be seen as far away as Marbella, Nozal reveals. It was largely the fact that the fire was near two golf courses, which are regularly irrigated to keep them green, that stopped the inferno spreading even further. The mayor has called for members of the public to come forward if they have any information that may lead to the culprits being identified. “It’s not about telling tales,” he stresses, “it’s about community spirit and helping to arrest people who put the lives of people and animals, as well as the environment, in danger.” Mijas has already seen over 40 per cent of its countryside destroyed by wildfires in the past few years. Almería woman, 41, stabbed to death by ex-boyfriend
A 41-YEAR-OLD woman has been stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend in the province of Almería – the second in a week to die at the hands of an ex-lover in the southern region of Andalucía. The unnamed victim, a Spanish national who was born in the town of Berja and whose family still lives there, had been involved with a Moroccan man after splitting up from her husband, but the relationship ended recently. He is believed to have threatened or hit her in the past, since he had an injunction preventing him from approaching his ex-girlfriend and was under house arrest until Wednesday this week (July 30). It appears that just two days after his house arrest ended, the accused followed the woman home in the early hours of the morning, forced his way into her house and stabbed her in the jugular. Local Police attended the scene almost instantly since they were alerted by a witness, but the woman died within minutes due to a massive loss of blood and emergency services
were unable to save her.
This was at around 06.45hrs on Friday morning, police say. The accused, who fled the scene and has not yet been caught, had been under surveillance by Local Police during his house arrest and had not shown any aggressive or confrontational behaviour during this time, leading officers to believe he would not pose a risk to his exgirlfriend after being ‘released’. Just a week ago, a 24-year-old woman identified as Verónica F., from Málaga, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. He had broken an injunction in order to do so, and the victim is said to have been living in a ‘safe house’ for a while due to his violent behaviour. A direct line to a specialist police unit, 061, operates all over Spain for victims of domestic violence. The number does not show up on an itemised telephone bill to avoid possible repercussions for victims making a call. Source: http://www.thinkspain.com/

Jobless queues shrink by 30,000 in July Unemployment dipped by 29,841 in July, leaving the number of people registered as looking for work in the country’s employment offices below the 4.42 million-mark seen when the current conservative Spanish government took office in December 2012. July’s figure is the latest in a series of strong numbers for the government after more than 120,000 people left the jobless queues in June. However, the new is not all good.

Spain’s active population — the number of people either working or looking for work — fell from 23.4 million at the end of 2011 to 22.9 million in the second quarter of 2014, according to Spain’s statistics institute, the INE. This means that some of people who have left Spain’s jobless queues have either given up seeking work, or have
seen their benefits run out.
In addition, when corrected to smooth out seasonal blips, the number of registered unemployed actually rose by 32,357 people in July. Spain’s economy relies heavily on tourism and the labour market usually enjoys a boost in hiring during the summer months. Spain’s unemployment rate slipped below 25 percent in the second quarter of this year, a separate report showed last month, as the economy enjoyed a gradual recovery after emerging in mid-2013 from a two-year recession. The unemployment rate fell to 24.47 percent in the second quarter from 25.93 percent in the previous quarter, according to the broad, household survey, which provides the official unemployment rate. Spanish Police have arrested two teenage girls, 14 and 19, who were planning on joining jihadist forces in Iraq and Syria. The country’s National Police made the arrests on Saturday in the North African enclave of Ceuta, where the youngest girl is originally from. According to a police statement, they were “on the brink” of being transferred
País reported.
The 14-year-old’s parents informed officers of her disappearance, pointing out that she hadn’t been herself in previous weeks, Spanish national daily El
“It’s the first time that the police have detained women in Spain who were planning on joining the jihad,” a police chief told the newspaper. “(The) most important aspect of these arrests is that they have avoided [the detainees] being led to an almost certain death.”

Places to visit
One of Andalucia’s most dramatically positioned pueblos blancos (white villages), Arcos balances atop a rocky limestone ridge, its whitewashed houses and stone castle walls stopping abruptly as a sheer cliff face plunges down to the fertile valley of the river Guadalete below Declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1962 in recognition of its exceptional architecture and impressive location, the old town is a tangled labyrinth of cobbled streets that lead up to a sandstone castle, the Castillo de los Arcos. As you’d expect from such a spectacular vantage point, there are exhilarating views over the town and the rolling plain below. Although its time under the Moors was one of its most successful, Arcos has had a long history of occupation, as shown by the discovery of numerous archaeological remains from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Tartessian, Phoenician and Roman periods. Plentiful water and its superb defensive hilltop location were the main attractions for settlers. Arcos’s population of 28,000 is divided between the newer town on the lower slopes of the ridge and the old town, which you reach by following Cuesta Belén up the hill. In the heart of the old town is the cobbled Plaza de Cabildo, its picturesque situation somewhat marred by its dual function as a car park. On the southern side of the square there are some stomach-
churning views, where the mirador (viewpoint) ends in a steep 150m-high cliff Among the most memorable of Arcos’s pretty and often strikingly narrow streets are the alley-like Calle Cuna and Calle Maldonaldo, lined with elegant palacios built by the town’s 18th-century nobility and overhung by wrought-iron rejas of windows. Tapas bars in the old town are concentrated on or near the central Callejón de las Monjas. Try the Mesón El Patio, an atmospheric cave-like bar near the Santa María church that serves good-value tapas. If you want something more formal, one of the most upmarket restaurants in town is El Convento on Marques de Torresoto, which is in a 17th-century palace and has plenty of game dishes on the menu. The terrace at the luxurious Parador on Plaza del Cabildo is the place to go for a leisurely drink in style and enjoy the best views in Arcos. Down below the town is the Guadalete river lined with olive and orange groves. The tourist office is on the Plaza del Cabildo (MonSat 10.00-14.00 and 15.30-19.30, Sun 10.00-14.00). LA COLA DEL EMBALSE DE ARCOS NATURAL AREA This embalse (reservoir), close to Arcos de la Frontera, is worth a visit for its waterfowl, particularly in winter when there are many more birds here and it is also a stopping place for migratory birds. The area covers 120ha and includes the reservoir and small surrounding area. Regular sights include little and great crested grebes, grey herons, coots and ducks like mallards, red-crested pochards and shovelers. There are also ospreys in winter Easily easily accessible, take the A382 from Arcos de la Frontera towards Villamartín. A few kilometres out of Arcos turn right towards El Bosque and then follow the road around the southern edge of the embalse to a village called El Santiscal, from where there are good views to the reservoir.

SPANISH WILLS & INHERITANCES A will is one of the most common legals needs, but less than 25% of Europeans have one!
As you may know a will is not exclusively about making sure that the right people will inherit without disagreement or problems. It is a formal declaration of intention made by a person in their life-time of thier wishes concerning the disposal of their property after their death. We understand the need to preserve and protect your assests and those of your family. If you have purchased or already have property in Spain, we strongly recommend you to make a Spanish will in order to facilitate the distribution of your Spanish assests.

La Tomatina 2014 Is ......
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. Since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people. What Happens at La Tomatina .... At around 11 am, the first event of the Tomatina begins. Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a twostory high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes
27th August 2014

a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself. Those who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle. Although it is forbidden to tear someone else’s clothing, the crowd tends to ignore this and invariably will rip the shirt of any clothed person, man or woman. After exactly one hour, the fighting ends when the water cannons are fired once more to signal the end. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves, although some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.
Image:www.amazngfacts.com
How did La Tomatina Start .. The tomato fight has been a strong tradition in Bunol since 1944 or 1945. No one is completely certain how this event originated. Possible theories on how the Tomatina began include a local food fight among friends, a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the anarchic aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage. One popular theory is that disgruntled townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. Whatever happened to begin the tradition, it was enjoyed so much that it was repeated the next year, and the year after that, and so on. The holiday was banned during the Spanish State period under Francisco Franco for having no religious significance, but returned in the 1970s after his demise. The festival is in honor of the town’s patron saints, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary.
Where is Bunol .....
Bunol is a town and municipality in the province of Valencia, Spain and is situated approximately 38 km west of the provincial and autonomous community capital city, Valencia.

Renting an Apartment in Summer Cheaper than a Hotel
According to a recent study carried out by the property rental portal, House Trip, on 22 European destinations, tourists choosing to rent apartments for their holidays can save up to 58% compared with booking a hotel room. According to the portal’s holiday apartment price index, Dubrovnik, Cannes and Palma de Mallorca offer the greatest savings. Specifically, a one bedroom apartment in the Croatian city, with a price of 72 euros, costs an average of 99 euros less than a stay in a hotel, where the cost is around 171 euros. For Cannes the saving is 82 euros, while in Palma de Mallorca it is around 70 euros, with an apartment in the island destination priced at 58 euros while the average cost for a hotel room rises to 128 euros. In another Spanish destination, Barcelona, renting a property can be 50% more economical than booking a hotel, with the average rate of 128

euros for a hotel stay dropping to 60 euros on average for renting a holiday apartment. Behind Barcelona stands Nice, where the price difference between the two types of accommodation is 66 euros per night, while in Paris, the city with the highest hotel prices in Europe, at an average of 159 euros, renting a holiday apartment would generate a saving of about 58 euros. The President of the rental portal, Arnaud Bertrand, explained that the objective of the analysis is to help families and travellers “to make informed decisions about places to travel while saving money this summer”. “Staying in a house instead of a hotel room is the easiest way to enjoy the holidays, and the best way to ensure the family spends time together,” he added. Let us look after your home this summer Here are some tips and tricks about how to keep a house cool. The recent hot weather dredged these questions up for me, and I am sure these questions are seasonal for many of us. Efficient cooling saves money, energy, and the quality of our lives. Keep the house closed tight during the day. Don’t let in unwanted heat and humidity. Ventilate at night either naturally or with fans. You can help get rid of unwanted heat through ventilation if the temperature of the incoming air is lower than the air in the house keep interior doors must remain open to allow air flow. If you have ceiling fans, use them to increase comfort levels when the temperature is warm outside. A slow-turning ceiling-mounted paddle fan can easily provide good air flow. Plant shade trees around the house. Don’t plant trees on the South and obscure your solar heating panels as this will reduce its efficiency.

If buying a new air conditioner, be sure that it is properly sized. Get assistance from an air conditioning contractor. Try not to use a dehumidifier at the same time your air conditioner is operating. The dehumidifier will increase the cooling load and force the air conditioner to work harder. Install awnings on south-facing windows, where there’s insufficient roof overhang to provide shade. Hang tightly woven screens or bamboo shades outside the window during the summer to stop 60 to 80 percent of the sun’s heat from getting to the windows. Keep your air conditioning units properly maintained to maximize efficiency. Clean your A/C’s air filter every month. Normal dust build-up can reduce air flow by 1 percent per week. Provide shade for your room A/C, or the outside half of your central A/C if at all possible. This will increase the unit’s efficiency by 5 percent to 10 percent. Turn off your A/C when you leave for more than an hour.

Home & Garden Paint can look wonderful when used cleverly and in context, creating a different mood and feel in your garden. is powerful enough to set them off properly. Wine reds and deep yellow ochres can look warm and stunning. Cooler colours such as light and deep blues and purples are particularly effective in summer sunshine. However, before going the whole hog and slapping it on, just get yourself a few samples of paint and some old bits of board to play around with. Make sure it dries properly because the hue will change when dry. Then bite the bullet and go for it!
It’s not a new thing; the Romans loved their frescoes, and trompe l’oeil has been executed umpteen times to full trickery effect since the Ancient Greeks.
The great thing about using paint is that, over time, if you want a new look or get bored with the colour you can just stick a different one over the top!
The contrasting and colourful work by the late Mexican architect Luis Barragán showed precisely what vibrant colours can do for architecture and the landscape. Barragán painted entire walls with single primary colours, Member of the College of Civil Engineers, often contrasting with no 27335 walls of brash pinks, oranges and purples. It’s his work that seems the most relevant and achievable in our own backyards today.
Isabel Morales Civil Engineer
Painted backdrops such as walls will intensify the hues of the plants in front, especially mid and dark greens, but of course will also set off flower colours too, opening up a wider range of combinations, whether subtle or madly zingy. Flat planes of colour can look wonderful when cast in shadow by strong sunlight. Sharp, clean shadows of nearby structures will add drama and definition, while the dancing shadows of textural leaves from cleverly placed plants add a life and movement to the space. Walls of concrete or breeze block rendered and painted are cheap to build and the smoother flat or slightly textured finish opens up the opportunity to paint, introduce permanent colour and create a more contemporary feel. But be careful not to commit the sin of covering a lovely old character wall! Wooden fences can easily be stained, too. Far easier to reapply than paint, stain soaks in and therefore doesn’t need loads of sanding and preparation. Garden furniture can also be painted for a revamp and even old stone, wood or terracotta pots can be washed over with a masonry paint to tie them all in together. The most important factor is choosing the right colour or combination and using them boldly. Here in Spain, primary colours are eye-catching and the light

News Hundreds in Spain demand release of El Salvador priest
Hundreds of people in the Spanish town of Daimiel have marched to demand the release of a Roman Catholic priest detained in El Salvador. Father Antonio Rodriguez, who was born in Daimiel, has been accused of smuggling mobile phones to imprisoned members of El Salvador notorious gangs. Demonstrators say Father Tono has dedicated much of his life to helping gang members turn away from crime. El Salvador has one of the highest murder rates in the world. More than 300 of Father Tono’s supporters, including Mayor Leopoldo Sierra, marched through the streets of Daimiel in Spain on Sunday. Among them was a former Salvadoran gang member, Isamar Orellana, who now lives in Spain. “I am a living example of how much Father Tono has done to help us get out of that difficult world,” Ms Orellana told the EFE news agency. “He was a wonderful person to me, the father I never had.” Gangs truce In March 2012, the two main gangs in El Salvador - or maras - signed a truce mediated by the Catholic Church. The 18th Street (or M-18) and the Salvatrucha (or MS-13) gangs, which

SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014
braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today I want to continue where we left off last week in describing the problems involved with streaming internet TV and why there are times when the little back box just sits there ‘buffering’. Last week we looked at some of the reasons behind the problems facing website owners such as FilmOn but had to leave it a little dry and ‘in the air’. Today I would like to, using analogue (if it was good enough for Buddha, Allah and Jesus, then it good enough for a simple teacher like me), to develop with you an understanding of why you get buffering. What is the problem? Lets go back to the analogue of water in the pipe. Imagine that the water is there to push around a water mill that grinds wheat. To work properly the mill needs 1 pint of water per second to turn it. Your Super pipe can provide water at 1 gallon per second (8 pints = 1 gallon for those too young to remember), which is then stored in a tank that feeds the mill wheel, so there shouldn’t be a problem. Your mill is so successful that you have to put in another wheel! 2 mills needing 1 pint each to power them is 2 pints per second leaving 6 pints spare. Business is so good that you have to put in another 8 wheels. Oops! You have only enough water to power 8 wheels in total but now have 10! Solution? Run 8 wheels at a time and divert the water to the other 2 wheel tanks in turn – that way all 10 mill wheels are constantly turning. Unfortunately, all the tanks will start to run dry as the super hose can’t provide enough water to keep them all topped up all the time! This is similar to what is happening to your Internet TV. Substitute a digital buffer (digital water tank) for a real water tank, and streaming
‘Corrie’ for water. Then change the mill wheels to end users (your good selves) and instead of 10 mill wheel substitute 10’s of 1000’s of avid ‘Corrie’ fans. These ‘buffers’ are constantly emptying faster than they are filling up and have to wait for enough information before they can start to stream the TV program again. This is simply what buffering is and why it is happening. Then the analogue starts to make sense and you will see what the problem is. FILMON (just one of many Internet TV Providers) has this same juggling act simply because it can only afford a 1 gallon pipe. So, contrary to popular belief, it isn’t always the fault of your internet provider. Nor is it the fault of the Internet TV box seller and in many cases it isn’t even the fault of the website such as ‘FilmOn’. It is an unavoidable consequence of new technology overtaking the capacities of the existing technology. As with all things you will have to be patient and wait until things catch up and settle down. You always have the option of recording using DVR (Digital Video Recording – simple really) and watching it later. At least that way you can watch the entire program that has been recorded on your computer, uninterrupted and without buffering. I hope that this article hasn’t insulted the intelligence of anyone by being over simplified or been too complicated either. It is my hope to help and educate through these articles. Please let me know how I’m doing. So until then I will be at Jack’s Bar in Albox for my usual Friday afternoon computer clinic, but can also be contacted at the number or email address below.

Abandon hope all ye that enter - Part III The futility of life or buying an IKEA kitchen. On our last visit to IKEA we’d been given a rather expensive quote and told we couldn’t order a thing until the ‘measuring man’ had been. Going through the quote at home we thought that paying IKEA 600€ to fit the units was expensive and got a much cheaper quote locally. We cancelled ‘measuring man.’ My wife sensibly refused to go back to buy the stuff and organise delivery so I gallantly offered to do the dirty work. Now knowing the system I zipped through the room displays and joined the queue to queue to then be able to queue with a pager. Just 30 minutes later I was sat with a lovely yellow lady called Maria de las Nievas on the uncomfortable stools. I handed the previous quote over and a warm feeling came over me as she thoroughly checked each line of our quote umming and ahing as she went. Maria looked at me all maternally and told me that on our previous visit, yellow girl had duplicated
Sea Life!
There’s an awful lot of sea knocking about. Really, it’s everywhere and even though it can look very inviting, I’ve always thought it was a bit on the scary side of things. But recently, I came across an article that suggested differently. Somewhere off the coast of Spain, near Bilbao-and yes, it is a big big coastline there, so nobody’s giving much away -a winemaker stores his wine, under the sea. Now you may, just I was, be just a little surprised at this news. Surely, you would think, if there was a storm out at sea or, heaven forbid, an earthquake, then that’s the wine done for, but apparently not. Now I’ve always associated the underwater world with some quite nasty things. There’s an awful lot down there that you really can’t trust and would sting, bite, squish or even eat you without a moment’s hesitation. Yes I know that “Jaws” has put a lot of people off the idea of dipping more than a toe in the water, but perhaps on two counts, this underwater wine storage thing could give marine life much better publicity. First of all, it just goes to show you that not everything lurking down there is bent on doing indescribably nasty- or painful- things to you for no other reason than, that they can! No, perhaps there is a softer side down there and that could well be connected to that wine storage thing. Have you ever noticed that, try as you may, you often get a bit of wine leaking out of a bottle, especially when the cork is a bit on the old side. Maybe this could be the start of a change in marine behaviour. A little wine seeping into the water may well mellow some of those more confrontational critters and could be encouraging a laid back, collegial life down there. Or maybe not. Have you ever seen a black dragon fish? You’d remember if you had. It’s not the sort of thing that you’d ever forget. If you’ve ever seen “Alien”, than you’ve got an idea of what this horrific looking thing is like. It’s all teeth and mouth and is certainly not the most attractive of creatures. No, all that creepy stuff you find underwater still puts me off big time. On balance, if I ever hear a call from the sea I’d put the phone down! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

items and quoted us 400€ too much. Maria was good, she was very good. I watched in awe as she phoned people to talk about stuff and then type things into the computer. Then came printing, lots of printing, more calls to check more stuff, then more pressing of buttons and yet more printing. But my heart sank when Maria said it would be three weeks until delivery and even worse I couldn’t simply pay her and leave. Instead she handed me a bag of door knobs, a wedge of paperwork and told me what to do next. I made detailed notes as my poor confused brain couldn’t cope. Although the units were to be delivered I was sent to find some of it in the cavernous warehouse below. Carefully modelled on Dante’s Inferno, the Devil beckoned from his pit of fire; the ‘market place’. Nothing can be done in IKEA without walking every square inch of the place first. No express lanes here as everyone needs a framed photo of a double decker bus and a few more tea lights. Exhausted I
reached the warehouse and found the correct aisle surprisingly easily, I loaded up a hob and other bits as instructed. I then had to pay not only for the items on the trolley but also the quote for the rest of the kitchen. This I think I handled well as the cashier spoke in rapid fire Spanish when giving me yet more instructions to continue my ordeal. I glanced hungrily at the hot dog stand but instead pushed my trolley onwards to the transport desk where I was charged more money and my hob and doorknobs were taken from me. Next I was sent to customer services to pay for our oven to be. Why it couldn’t be paid for in the original quote I’ve no idea but some IKEA logistics boffin has deemed an extra complication for the customer makes it easier for IKEA. The oven was out of stock so instead I bought an imaginary oven, and then took the receipt back to transport where they added my invisible oven to my trolley of doorknobs and whisked
everything away. Hurray, hot dog time! I suspect using a local kitchen company would have been much easier. Seven hours of my life robbed by two stressful and soul destroying visits. Then there were the wasted hours using the useless website, oh and travel time. Although IKEA banked our money a month ago, I waited at home on delivery day but they never showed up. They didn’t bother to phone and cancel so yet more hours wasted trying to speak to someone on the premium 902 phone number. Five conversations later I was confidently informed that ‘maybe’ we will have a delivery next week.

MOVING BACK TO THE U.K. DUE TO ILL HEALTH LEAVING A PROPERTY IN SPAIN ON THE MARKET
Q. My mother and father need to move back to the u.k due to very bad health, with my mother moving into a home immediately on her return. They own a house and a bank account in Vera. Have you got any recommendations of things I should be thinking about from a legal point of while I am in Spain to help them organise their return. A. Absolutely. I would at least address the following matters: 1. Make sure there Spanish wills are in good order. Even if they are, it may be time to reconsider the clauses. If for example one of your parents is very ill it may not be convenient for the other partner to name him /her beneficiary. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure Internet banking is set up on their Spanish bank account. 4. Your parents may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with their Spanish assets. 5. Look in to the advantages/ disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on waiting for a better price From a tax point of view if they
are resident and over 65 it is in their advantage to sell before they lose their resident status in Spain as they are entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. When you get back to England start working on an enduring power of attorney to be used in the u.k. Very important: The above are the essential things that need to be looked into but I recommend that you and your parents visit their solicitor in Spain to run through their situation together before going back to the u.k. If you are not comfortable with their solicitor, simply make an appointment with a different solicitor but take all your paperwork with you (you must at least take copy of title deeds, NIE numbers, rates bills and copy of wills) . Depending on the circumstances, paperwork etc. it may be advantageous to take further actions or none at all. In any case it will be convenient for you to put a face to the solicitor and go through things together with him/ her and your parent to avoid nasty surprises regarding documentation in the future. ‘Stock’ of Unsold New Homes Reduced by 3.3% in 2013
According to the latest estimates from the Ministry of Development, at the end of 2013, Spain had a total of 563,908 unsold new homes, which is 3.3% lower than a year earlier. Thus, during the past year the rate of absorption of the ‘stock’ has slowed, as in 2013 the decline was 6.9%. In cumulative terms, the ‘stock’ of unsold new homes, which is equivalent to 2.2% of the total housing stock, has reduced by 13.2% from their peak level in 2009, when the figure reached 649,780 homes. The Ministry’s data shows that the accumulated ‘stock’ decreased in all regions in 2013, except Ceuta and Melilla (+16.2%), Madrid (+1.8%) and Asturias (+1%). The most significant decreases were registered in Extremadura (-92.4%), Cantabria (-35.8%) and Navarra (-22.5%). They were followed by: Murcia (-5.9%); Galicia (-5.7%); Andalucía (-5.6%); Aragón (-5.3%); the Canary Islands (-
3.8%); Castilla-La Mancha (-2.8%); Catalonia (-2.7%); Castilla y León (-2.4%); the Balearic Islands (2.4%); Valencia (-2.1%); the Basque Country (-0.6%) and La Rioja (-0.4%). Three regions together accounted for 49.2% of the total national ‘stock’ of empty homes in 2013 – Valencia, Andalucía and Catalonia – while Navarra, Ceuta and Melilla, Cantabria and Extremadura are the regions and cities with the lowest percentage of accumulated ‘stock’ out of the national total. El Economista reported that the Ministry’s statistics also show that the provinces with the highest percentage of ‘stock’ out of the total are situated on the Mediterranean coast, in addition to Madrid and Toledo. These are: Barcelona (8.25%), Alicante (8%), Madrid (7.7%), Valencia (4.9%), Castellón (4.9%), Murcia (4.6%), Toledo (4.1%) and Almeria (4%).

Candy crush: the artworks that look like sweetshop nightmares
With its doughnut eyes, meringue mouths and Wotsit hair, James Ostrer’s edible art may be the stuff of nightmares, but it has also helped him kick his junk-food addiction James Ostrer’s affair with junk food began in earnest after his parents divorced. Every weekend his father would collect the children (he was often late; it was a tense handover) and take them to McDonald’s, which Ostrer came to view as “a place of relaxation and fun”. Ever since, he says, “when I feel distressed, I will go straight for this kind of food.” Which, in a roundabout sort of way, is why he has spent at least £5,000 in the last two years on Mars bars, Jelly Babies, strawberry bootlaces and other sweets and crisps. This vast stash was not for eating, but to be used in human sculptures through which Ostrer would explore his relationship with junk food, and perhaps even rid himself of his addiction. He and others were caked in cream cheese that had been dyed lurid colours, inlaid with, as Ostrer puts it, “scientifically produced items developed to attract us without any nutritional value”. The photographs in which the artist documented this exercise are by turns grotesque, hilarious and tragic. They are the childhood dream of the gingerbread house – a world spun from sugar – turned nightmare. And appearing, as they are, in the same year in which the notion of sugar addiction has been widely accepted into the public consciousness and been blamed outright for the obesity epidemic, it’s hard not to see in them an element of harsh truth. Some of the caricatures that Ostrer has created, with their bulging gelatin eyes and misshapen heads, have an alien quality. Others use generic tribal imagery in a reference to ancient huntergatherers who, he imagines, had to endure multiple bee stings to score some honey. Now, he says, “you just have to stick your hand out and grab a whole pile of things from the checkout. It’s not special any more.” There are echoes, too, of Jake and Dinos Chapman’s Family Collection, which featured African-style carvings incorporating McDonald’s
Hack Attack by Nick Davies’s
When Nick Davies watched Andy Coulson in the dock waiting to be sentenced last month, he felt a twinge of sympathy for the man whose downfall, among other things, he had worked so hard to achieve. It was the anniversary of the publication by the Guardian of the Milly Dowler story, but that was not what came to Davies’s mind. Instead, he recalled the tape recording made by David Blunkett exactly 10 years ago this weekend. “I remember Blunkett’s voice,” writes Davies in Hack Attack, his gripping account of the phone-hacking scandal, “full of panic and fear as he pleaded for his privacy; and the sheer mechanical coldness of Coulson as he insisted on his right to convert this man to a headline. I remember all the others who suffered the same fate, left behind like roadkill as Coulson roared off into his gilded future.” It is the heartlessness with which the News of the World and the Sun broke people’s lives to push newspaper sales and enforce Rupert Murdoch’s writ that is so shocking and why it is now difficult to feel much sympathy for Coulson. Davies might also have remembered in that moment the hypocrisy of the people who worked on those papers, the fact that Andy Coulson, a married man, had a long affair with his boss, Rebekah Brooks (the demonic pillow talk between these two was sadly never properly explored in the court case), and that former News of the World journalists,
while setting about their victims in the paper, described some of their own office parties as “a model of drug-fuelled sexual adventures”. One lesson of this book is that when people such as Coulson, the News of the World’s news desk editor, Greg Miskiw, or the paper’s chief reporter, Neville Thurlbeck, looked in the mirror they suffered not a trace of unease about their behaviour, whether it was straight hypocrisy, lying, bullying or wrecking someone’s life. This was not a matter of law but one of morality, and to that degree all the defendants in the recent trial, and many more who were never charged, are guilty of serving a pitiless regime that went unchecked for decades. This book is important, not simply because it is written by a superb reporter who took on a seemingly invulnerable criminal conspiracy, or because it is, even after Leveson and the months of evidence in court, the best account we have of the phonehacking scandal and the attendant police corruption and coverups. logos and emblems. “Fifty per cent of the time,” says Ostrer, “you feel fucking awful about what we do to the world, how we get our T-shirts and food so cheap, and then the other half is: ‘Yeah, I’m having a great time, look at me under the blue sky driving a nice car.’” Along with the black humour, and monstrous quality of many of these sugar zombies, some, with their ornate headdresses and plinths, are intended to reflect the way that the young Ostrer worshipped marketing mascots such as Tony the Tiger. While immersed in this project, he says, “I’ve had dreams where these caricatures are telling me how I should live. To me they look like … this sounds a bit harsh, but if someone had poured acid over Tony the Tiger. It’s like they’re melting.” In Ostrer’s short film showing the making of one of the images, slathering people in gloop and chucking sugar sprinkles all over them looks a right laugh, like messy play for big people. But while the process was “intensely fun”, it was also therapy for all involved. “I’m the therapist and the client in all my work.” There is a ceremonial quality to the process, he says, which is as important as the final image. The whole thing looks less fun for the sitters, who must wear goggles under their fake eyes, and are temporarily rendered blind, dumb and paralysed, and sometimes have only a single nostril to breathe out of during the photo shoot. “Some people can sit there like a monk for a century,” he observes, “and then you ask someone very dynamic and together to stand still for 10 minutes and they’ll freak out. That in itself is very interesting for me and them. Emotionally, things come out from people.” Read more on: www.theguardian.com

So That’s What You Have To Do #2
Many years ago I noticed that the standard of printing was seriously deteriorating; despite modern technology the printed word was coming out blurry. This situation didn’t seem to bother the printers, who were apparently content to produce woolly newspapers and blurry books, but it bothered me. To prove my point that printers were a lazy shiftless lot who were indifferent to the deterioration in the quality of the work they produced I took myself to the optician, namely SpecSavers in Honiton. After adorning my nose with an apparatus which would not have looked out of place in a Benny Hill sketch, and into which the optician
slotted umpteen different strengths and colours of lenses, he stood back and courteously informed me that I had ‘natural maturation of the short sight.’ Since then I have accepted glasses, and the idea that maybe the fault is with my eyes, not the printers. Until recently, when I noticed that after working on the laptop for any length of time my eyes get tired and want to quit, and that very shortly afterwards my brain suggests that it too is tired and wants to quit. Drawing on the lesson of experience I took myself into Federopticos Diaz, where I explained the problem, hinted that perhaps my eyes were at fault rather than an incremental failure of the laptop, and the Benny Hill scenario was repeated, but with a choice of English or Spanish. Boss Lady Ana, whose soothing manner and appearance would make her able to tame wild lions without the need of a chair and a whip, laid out the options open to me in josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk
By Jos Biggs
order to correct my fuzzy eyes and fading brain. As the problem is only with the laptop, she suggested: Getting glasses to be used only with the laptop, which would mean a new prescription, and another pair of glasses. Or I could abandon my existing glasses, and get some sort of super-trifocals, which have three zones, not the usual two, thus I would be able to see the laptop and the world around me, but at a hefty price, and, she said, they take a lot of getting used to. She paused to allow this information to be absorbed by my little grey cells – and they were not happy! Oh! Woe is me! What shall I do?! ‘Or’ she said in tones softer than Asian silk, ‘you could move the laptop.’ Ah – Now why didn’t I think of that?
alqueria Remitpower
The Alquerian establishment once again tried to raise the country’s profile in the eyes of the industrialised nations. On paper the village republic was vying to take the initiative in the race for a viable renewable energy source. In reality there was a hidden agenda. A grant had been applied for and received from the Geneva based ‘International Authority for Daft Grants and Money Squandering’. This was to develop Alqueria’s Remitroot fuelled power station. Actually an old diesel generator still running on diesel but with a note saying, ‘Alqueria’s Remitroot fuelled power station’ sticky-taped to a jerry-can. The money was really wanted to supply and fit the new self-cleaning, motorised, tungsten reinforced outdoor/indoor bidet with integral torch and shoe-horn into every Alquerian home. The only country in western Europe with such a boast. This, the elders of the Pueblo thought would make Alqueria the envy of all. Unfortunately the Geneva based authority may have been gullible and inefficient but they weren’t altogether stupid. They sent a fact finding mission to see what had happened to their cash. Their unannounced arrival caused confusion and alarm. Manuela was given the task of looking after the impromptu guests. It was hoped that if anyone could distract a group of healthy middle-aged men she could. Meanwhile Poyato with touching but misplaced loyalty to his product, panicked and filled the generator’s fuel tank with Remitroot Advocaat. Now, Remitroot is as unstable as a Tory politician declaring his expenses. The resultant explosion was a joy to behold. On the pyrotechnic aesthetic scale it must have been somewhere near the very top. The yellow Remitroot Advocaat added a welcome colour contrast to the blast. The yellow fallout-cloud rose majestically
from Poyato’s workshop. It was then taken by the strong westerly breeze and descended as if by magic on the town’s plaza. The square was thronged with Saturdaynight revellers including the representatives from the international fact finding mission. Now, it has been stated many times that Remitroot is an aggressive aphrodisiac. The effect on the semi-intoxicated populace of Alqueria was spectacular, obscene and disturbing but spectacular. Manuela, who was charged with entertaining the delegation from Geneva took the full force of the descending cloud. Already of a ‘friendly’ disposition her mood was enhanced by the racy fallout. It took the delegation two months to get back to Switzerland and when they arrived couldn’t remember why they had left in the first place. It is said that it took the best European surgeons three weeks to remove the smile from their faces. John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

viewpoint
Another Fine Mess Now I don’t want people to think that I have an obsession with blood sucking bats or a fixation with sheep, heaven forbid - I don’t even possess a pair of green wellies – but after recounting some time ago about a creepy experience on Bodmin Moor, I recalled another episode in that magical part of England that involved both. If I had to list the happiest times in my life, the brilliant summer of 1972 has to be right up there as one of my most memorable in the Mother country. I had originally moved to Cornwall to get some sort of business up and running, but things rarely go as planned in my life and I found it virtually impossible as an outsider to break into the local scene as a roofing contractor. So I found myself working in a busy restaurant in that most chocolate boxy of all chocolate box villages - Polperro. This achingly beautiful collection of fisherman’s cottages and narrow winding lanes had been the main reason why, a year before, I had packed all my things into a spotted red handkerchief, tied it to a stick and with it slung over my shoulder set off for a new life. Working in a restaurant in a tourist hot-spot in the height of summer is not the easiest of occupations but I loved it. We worked our socks off for 12 hours every day, then partied ourselves silly every night. It was the perfect life for unattached young

people with long hair, flared coloured loons and a zest for living. Life was there to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck and shaken vigorously. And we did. * Late Saturday Night: My friend’s beat up Volkswagen Beetle lurched round yet another tight curve in the unlit country road, and once again I had to shout at him above the noise of the engine to slow down before we ditched the damned thing, but Jacko ignored me anyway and tore round the bend but this time with unfortunate consequences. There in the glare of our headlights was a woolly overcoat on legs – one moment looking very sheepish, the next looking very dead as the car hit it full pelt. We pushed what was left of the VW to the side of the road and ran back to tend to the unfortunate animal, which as we suspected was beyond help and were just preparing to remove it from the road when we heard the sound of a car approaching. As the headlights appeared around the curve, there was the sound of hastily applied brakes as the vehicle slewed to a dead stop. There was a moment of silence with us frozen in tableau, then with a shrieking of tires the driver of the car attempted a multi point turn in the narrow road. After ramming a tree and sending clods of earth into the air, it fishtailed off in the direction from whence it had come, still in first gear and screaming like an Osmond Brothers groupie. * Three Days Earlier: There was to be a fancy dress party on the coming Saturday night, but Jacko and I had
different ideas about what we should wear. He was intent on dressing up as his favourite movie character Dracula – how boring was that – whilst I thought it would be a blast to go as Laurel and Hardy. He was the size of Ayres Rock and I was a string bean, so it would be a perfect match I reasoned. Moreover, I knew where we could get hold of the perfect ill fitting suits, complete with bowler hats. But he was having none of it and it left me with the problem of finding another costume or me going as both Laurel and Hardy – perhaps I could say we were a schizophrenic? Then I had a brilliant plan – something I get on occasion - and I reckoned that it would satisfy the both of us at a stroke . . . we would go as Stan and Ollie vampires. How cool was that. And wonder of wonders, once the suggestion had filtered through to what passed as Jacko’s brain, he liked it too. * Saturday after Work: It started out as a good evening. A female friend had painstakingly made us up as two blood sucking comedians complete with pasty white faces, deep set dark eye sockets and fangs - and of course the obligatory gore running down our chins from crimson lips – all under two ludicrous bowler hats. Now here we were bent over a dead sheep in the middle of nowhere and some moron in a car was roaring off like a thing possessed without stopping to help. What’s wrong people I thought?

Thursday 31st July and back to Aguilon for this Individual Stableford event. With temperature in the high 30s it really was a day for hanging on and trying to scores as best one can. The well kept fairways and beautiful greens encouraged many to do well, but no one coped better than Chrissie Dow. Scoring a fantastic 39 points off a (now cut to 33) handicap of 35 Chrissie made light work of the weather and simply played her socks off. She also managed to take a Nearest the Pin on the tricky 12th. In 2nd place Nigel Greenwood with 38 points just pipped Darren Banks into 3rd place with 33 points. Darren rounded off his day by scoring a Nearest the Pin on the 17th and converting that into a Two. The day made complete with refreshments and complimentary back at La Vida at Cucador. Results: 1st Chrissie Dow 39 points (35) 2nd Nigel Greenwood 38 points (18) 3rdDarren Banks 33 points (16) Nearest the Pin Hole No 8 Darren Banks Hole No 12 Chrissie Dow Hole No 17 Brian Kirkaldy Twos Darren Banks 17th Thanks to all the members who supported the 19th Hole Golf Society. Mazda RX-7 – Most Wanted Cars 2014 The Mazda RX-7 was around for almost a quarter of a century before the front-engined rear-wheel drive coupe was axed back in 2002. The most famous model was also the last, the third-gen RX-7 that was introduced in 1991.

The RX-7’s fierce popularity and strong enthusiast following raises the question as to why Mazda has not yet considered reviving the famous moniker. However, Auto Express recently revealed Mazda is in fact in the early stages of development of a direct successor to the RX-7. Our exclusive inside line revealed Mazda will stick with the Wankel rotary engine and target around 300bhp by implementing its latest SkyActiv technology. It will also be based on the upcoming Mazda MX-5 platform and be larger than the four-seater RX8 which was discontinued in 2010. The reborn icon could arrive as soon as 2017 and Mazda could opt to use the lowslung two-door coupe body of the original RX-7 rather than the four-door configuration of the RX-8 in order to shed weight.

It remains one of the few classic sports cars to emerge from Japan and ever since its launch it has stayed faithful to the Wankel rotary engine. At 1.3-litres, the engine was smaller than some powertrains you’ll find fitted to superminis in today’s market but the RX-7 also employed sequential twin turbocharging to give an almighty power boost.

The first generation Mazda RX-7 arrived in 1978 as a replacement for the Savanna RX3. Just like the RX-3, the car was called the Savanna RX-7 in its home market. The RX-7 mk1 was powered by a 1.1-litre Wankel rotary engine and had a front-engined rear-wheel-drive layout that would set the template for three more RX-7 generations. The Turbo version of the RX-7 was launched in 1983, boosting power to 163bhp at 6,500rpm but by 1986 the new second-generation RX-7 had arrived on the scene. The standard rotary engine was now up to 1.3 litres and 146bhp with the 1987 turbo model offering 182bhp. The RX-7 was getting serious and by 1989 a facelift brought updated styling, improved engine manage-
ment technology and a higher compression ratio seeing the RX-7 Turbo model to 200bhp. The car still tended towards the softer end of the sports car market - there was even a convertible version from 1988 onwards. It wasn’t until the third generation RX-7 showed up in 1991 that its reputation as a performance car would be cemented. The unit in the Mazda RX-7 mk3 was a sequential twin-turbocharged rotary engine with a 252bhp output that was increased to 276bhp by the time the plug was pulled in 2002. Read
