Could the moon fuel Earth for 10,000 years? China says mining helium from our satellite may help solve the world’s energy crisis The lunar dirt brought back by mankind’s first moonwalkers contained an abundance of titanium, platinum and other valuable minerals. But our satellite also contains a substance that could be of even greater use to civilisation – one that could revolutionise energy production. It’s called helium 3 and has been dumped on the moon in vast quantities by solar winds. Now China is looking to mine the moon for the rare helium isotope that some scientists claim could meet global energy demand far into the future, according to a report in The Times. Professor Ouyang Ziyuan, the chief scientist of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, recently said, the moon is ‘so rich’ in helium 3, that this could ‘solve humanity’s energy demand for around 10,000 years at least.’ Helium 3, scientists argue, could power clean fusion plants. It is nonradioactive and a very little goes a very long way. This would require mining an areas the size of Washington, D.C. The isotope is so rare on the Earth because our atmosphere and magnetic field prevent any of the solar helium 3 from arriving on the surface. The moon doesn’t have this problem as there is nothing to prevent helium 3 being absorbed by the lunar soil. Fabrizio Bozzato, a doctoral candidate at the University of Tamkan in Taiwan, recently wrote in World Security Network that helium 3 could be extracted by heating the lunar dust to around 600°C, before bringing it back to the Earth. The gas, he estimates, has a potential economic value of $3 billion (£1.78 billion) a tonne, making it economically viable to consider mining from the moon. According to experts in the U.S., the total estimated cost for fusion
development, rocket development and starting lunar operations would be about $20 billion (£11.8 billion) over two decades. While China has expressed an interest, it has yet to outline concrete plans about how it would mine the moon for helium. The prospect, however, raises the controversial issue about who owns our satellite. The United Nations Outer Space Treaty, signed by China, suggests that lunar resources are for all mankind. However, legal experts claim the language is ambiguous enough to allow for commercial exploitation of the moon. In a recent paper, Mr Bozzato said: ‘China appears determined to make [lunar mining] a reality of tomorrow. ‘China maintains its lunar mining would be for the benefit of all humanity,’ he added. ‘However, given the absence of willful competitors, it is also speculated that the Chinese intend to establish a helium 3 monopoly.’ Private enterprise is also interested in using fuel from the moon – although possibly by extracting water rather than helium 3. The Shackleton Energy company envisages providing propellant for missions throughout the solar system using lunar water. Some teams vying for the Google Lunar X-Prize also see mining as an ultimate goal of their landers. ESA has also considered using the Moon to help missions farther into the Solar System. Arguments have also been made for mining Helium-3 from Jupiter, where it is much more abundant – it would need to be given the distances involved. Extracting the molecule from Jupiter would also be a less power-hungry process. Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

Could ants solve GLOBAL WARMING? Insects remove carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere, study claims
known as carbon sequestration.
magnesium and calcium.
Natural carbon sequestration is the process on Earth that manages the carbon dioxide expelled by animals, plants and humans.
Carbon dioxide reacts with these elements to form limestone and magnesite.
Trees and the oceans help convert or trap this carbon dioxide. There are also artificial carbon sequestration schemes that involve manually trapping this carbon dioxide in the ground. One proposed method is ocean sequestration, in which carbon dioxide is placed deep in the ocean, forming lakes of the gas. These gases stay where they are due to pressure and temperature of the surrounding water, gradually dissolving over time.
They may only be tiny, and live for just three months, but ants could be the key to solving climate change. Rough harvester ants have been found to ‘weather’ minerals in sand to produce calcium carbonate, also known as limestone. When the ants make this limestone, the process traps carbon dioxide in the rock, ultimately removing it from the atmosphere. It is unsure how the minerals are converted, however, and theories range from ants licking the sand, to excreting the substance. The discovery was made by Professor Ronald Dorn from the University of Arizona Tempe. Professor Dorn buried sand at six sites in the Catalina Mountains in

Another method is geological sequestration where the carbon Arizona, and Palo Duro Canyon in dioxide is pumped into underground chamber, or into areas full of Texas, 25 years ago. Every five years, he measured how much the minerals olivine and plagioclase degraded in the sand, and discovered the ants break down minerals up to 300 times faster than sand left undisturbed. Professor Dorn believes the ants collect calcium and magnesium and use these elements to make the limestone. The conversion may occur when ants lick sand grains in order to stick them to the walls of their nests. Alternatively, the limestone could be created from bacteria in the insects gut before it is excreted. This process is similar to what’s

It is this latter method that Dorn believes the ants perform naturally. But, Professor Dorn claims it is still unknown how much atmospheric carbon is removed by the ants. The findings are published in the journal Geology. Earlier this month, British scientists at the University of East Anglia said leafcutter ants could save lives thanks to a natural antibiotic they produce. The pioneering research by the School of Biological Studies centred on a particular type of fungus the ants eat, and how the ants’ natural resistance protects it. Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Miracle pill aspirin could even ward off major cancers: Long-term use of the drug can cut chance of developing disease by up to a third
Healthy middle-aged people should be encouraged to take low-dose aspirin every day to ward off cancer, a leading scientist has said. A major review of trials and studies has shown long-term use of the drug cuts the risk of developing major cancers and dying from them by around a third. And those with heart problems already taking a low dose to prevent recurrence of their condition would also gain from its anti-cancer properties. If everyone in the UK aged 50 to 64 took aspirin for ten years it would save 6,000 lives a year – 4,000 men and 2,000 women. An estimated 130,357 cancer deaths could be avoided over two decades plus 9,473 fatal heart attacks in those who had not previously suffered heart problems. The downside is that widespread use of aspirin would be expected to cause just under 18,000 deaths over 20 years, mainly due to internal bleeding and strokes, some of the potentially fatal side-effects of taking the drug. However, scientists calculated that many more Britons would benefit than suffer side-effects. For every 1,000 people taking aspirin for a decade to ward off cancer, there would be 17 lives saved and two deaths caused. The team led by Professor Jack Cuzick, head of the Centre for Cancer Prevention at Queen Mary, University of London, said a daily dose of 75mg – a quarter of the size of a standard 300mg pill – is enough to help ward off a string of cancers. Professor Cuzick said further research was needed but he believed the time had come for
GPs to talk to their patients about it. ‘I think they should recommend it,’ he said. Professor Cuzick’s team found the biggest impact of taking the drug for ten years was in cutting rates and deaths from digestive tract cancers, with rates of bowel cancer down by 35 per cent and deaths by 40 per cent. Similarly, rates of stomach and oesophageal cancer were cut by 30 per cent and deaths by 35 per cent and 50 per cent respectively. Aspirin has less effect on other cancers, but lowered lung and prostate cancer rates by 5 per cent and 10 per cent, and deaths from both by 15 per cent. It also reduced breast cancer rates by 10 per cent and deaths by 5 per cent. Aspirin use also cut heart attack risk by 18 per cent, resulting in 5 per cent fewer heart attack deaths. Overall, rates of serious or fatal bleeding in the gut due to the blood-thinning effects of aspirin were very low under the age of 70, but increased sharply after that age. The drug also raised the risk of a peptic ulcer by 30 per cent to 60 per cent, and the chances of dying from a haemorrhagic stroke by a fifth. Professor Cuzick, whose study is published in the Annals of Oncology journal, said: ‘Whilst there are some serious side effects that can’t be ignored, taking aspirin daily looks to be the most important thing we can do to reduce cancer after stopping smoking and reducing obesity.’ He also stressed that no one should take aspirin every day without speaking first to their GP. Dehydration
Dehydration happens when your body loses more fluid than you take in. When the normal water content of your body reduces, it upsets your balance of minerals (salt and sugar), which affects the way that it functions. Water makes up over two-thirds of the healthy human body, lubricating joints and eyes, aiding digestion, flushing out waste and keeping skin healthy. Some early warning signs include: • f eeling thirsty and lightheaded •d ark coloured, strong-smelling urine •p assing urine less often than usual Who is at risk from dehydration? Anyone can become dehydrated, but certain groups in particular include: •b abies and infants; they have low body weight and are sensitive to even small amounts of fluid loss •o lder people: they may be less aware they’re becoming dehydrated and need to keep drinking fluids

It’s best to avoid fizzy drinks or caffeine if possible. If you’re finding it hard to keep water down due to vomiting or diarrhoea, try drinking small amounts more frequently. If left untreated, severe dehydration can be serious and cause fits (seizures), brain damage and death. When should I see my Doctor? • f eeling tired (lethargic) or confused •d ry mouth and eyes that don’t produce tears • n ot passing urine for eight hours •d ry skin that sags slowly into position when pinched up • r apid heartbeat •b lood in your stools (faeces) or vomit • l ow blood pressure (hypotension) Preventing dehydration Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends you at least six to eight glasses of fluid daily. The FSA recommends semiskimmed milk, diluted fruit juice and diluted squash. If you’re active, or if the weather is particularly hot, there’s a greater risk so you should increase your fluid intake. Source: Almeria Angels

SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014
braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. As many of you good readers know, I do my little bit for the Albox Computer Club based at Jack’s Bar on a Friday morning, where annually paid up members get my help for free during class time! The club has, over the course of the years, devised a list of programs (usually free) that are used to maintain the speed and health of your computer; or are best for presentations; word processing (paying more doesn’t always mean getting the best product); and so on. It is quite a laborious task to hunt for, and download these programs. Every purpose designed program out there like ‘Ninite’ will only download a subset of all your favourite programs and inevitably, automatically install them. For most of you, this is all you want, and rightly so! For me, as ‘keeper of the chips’ (doesn’t that sound sad:-) ), I have to find and download currently 22 programs which usually takes about two and a half hours! This week I found, installed and started to learn a programming language to create a program that would download a list of files to my computer. From here I can copy them to the club memory chips and the members have only to copy them to their computer and install them, saving an hour and a half on the time I had to taken to get them in the first place. University required me to study several computer programming languages: Pascal; C; C++; DBase and BASH to name just five. The simplest was Dbase because it was a scripting language, followed by Pascal and then the rest. The great thing about a scripting language is that it is interpreted language and making corrections is quick and easy. This programming language is also a scripting language that can be compiled when working to a standalone program. Scripting = Interpreted = Slower run speed = Quicker to write and get
right = Easier. Compiled = Converted to Binary = Much faster programs = Slower to get right = Not so easy. Not a tough choice really! Go for the Scripting language that can then be compiled into a Binary program when your get it right! Within 2 days of getting it the program was at version 1, 2 days after that it was at version 1.1 (minor changes but made the program much more efficient. I can’t increase the speed that the programs download but my little program does it far more efficiently than I can!! My next task is to write a database for the charity arm of AlboxCC, which is based at the multi-servicio building in Arboleas, to monitor what computers are donated to us, the current state of repair and where they eventually end up. I am going to write it in this scripting language for speed then have a compiled version for speed. Version 1 gets started on Monday, which means by the time you have read this it should be about half done! Scripting programs are great for simple but repetitive tasks and in this instance much more complicated tasks. What is the name of this wonder software? AUTOIT and guess what! It’s free (now there is a surprise). Just a few cautionary words before I leave. First programming is a logical progression through the problem. Anyone can create a list of anything but making this list readable and elegent is something that only time and clear teaching can help you with. If you want a quick and dirty script to change the names of all your photos to “photo xxx” - xxx being a number then this will do it perfectly :-) Happy programming :-) I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further article that will be useful to you.

This planet we share
With the world’s population approaching 7,000,000,000 we must look like a giant colony of ants to any beings viewing us from space. Whether or not Global warming is believed to be caused by human activity the proof that our planet is a warmer and more unstable place can easily be seen. On a local basis Almeria is suffering a drought with the lowest winter rainfall in decades. With the desalination plant and deep water wells to fill the taps it’s more an inconvenience rather than a life threatening event. Though in some areas such as Turre and Albox the mains water is so contaminated it’s regularly deemed as unfit for use. Luckily Gabriel Amat the President of Almeria also sits on the board of water company Galasa, so apparently the best solution for Turre is to buy all future water from Galasa instead of ensuring the towns’ water independence by repairing the wells and pipes. The 5.1M ‘earthquake’ in Lorca a few years ago was a result of the tectonic plates slipping after years of heavy water extraction for irrigation under the town. Just as
Good TV, Worse TV
You’ll have seen this American police show I’m sure...or if not this particular one, then one very like it; Close up of young American lady with mouth full of perfect teeth; “Oh no-is he...hurt?” “He’s more than hurt Marcy...he’s, he’s...left us...” Poor Marcy I say! Or maybe, it’s poor us, because, isn’t this just the sort of stuff that’s on TV, time and time again? Let’s have something different! Wouldn’t it be great if, just once, the crime was so complicated that the police officer who’d never previously been beaten, admitted that this was just too difficult to solve and that they should all go home, admittedly leaving Marcy, Deacon, Madison or whoever is hysterical this week, in the dark. Although it would only last a few minutes, my bet is that the show would be remembered for years as one of the best episodes anyone had ever seen! And we’d get the chance to have a tea and a chat too. And you see, this is my point today. How many television shows, or films do we watch, with that ever growing niggling feeling that we’ve seen this one before? It’s not just because there’s a small pool of actors who keep cropping up in these shows time and time again, although that certainly seems to be the case. We recently finished watching the Inspector Morse series and I swear that some of the baddies had appeared, playing different characters in the show, more often than the late John Thaw. Don’t you find that the formula for many police shows often-with some exceptions-goes something like this; crime is committed, baddie is nowhere to be seen, hero/heroine appears, cracks jokes, biffs a few people, maybe falls for baddie, baddie is caught, hero/heroine gets all the praiseeven though his/her slightly barmy sidekick did 90% of the work-and we end on a joke that has everyone smiling to the camera. Maybe it’s time for television executives to be brave and give us a break from crime shows. I’d like to suggest that they look no further than Canada where they’ve introduced a new sport-underwater hockey! No, I didn’t believe it either but it’s true and it’s very popular there. With the addition of, let’s say, the odd giant squid and a few circling, snarling, sharks, this could knock the spots off crime dramas and even stop us longing for Eldorado to return...maybe! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. hydraulic fracking for oil can cause seismic tremors; the fact that the water table had dropped by 250 metres in just 50 years radically changed the pressures on the rocks below Lorca. This resulted in the devastating earthquake as the epicentre was just three kilometres underground. The effect on nature is visible too, in Lubrin the other day I saw an old Oak tree dead from drought. The effect on us is just that the view isn’t as nice, the hardship for the wildlife means not only a lack of water but less food to eat and less cover to hide in. Oaks have very deep root systems so with the lack of rainfall the water table is dropping yet the local wells keep extracting this dwindling resource for farmers to grow water hungry crops such as oranges, peppers and tomatoes. The filling of swimming pools uses huge amounts of water as the water evaporates quickly in hot weather. Measures such as covering the water surface when not in use and using filtration pumps at night reduces water loss. My wife will testify to my dislike of baths, not that I am unclean I hasten
to add but because bathing uses so much water. I don’t understand how sitting in dirty bathwater cleans anyone, showers are cleaner and use less water. Even showering can be wasteful especially when washing hair. Simply turning the water off whilst lathering up saves water. I was dismayed to read a few days ago that Lubrin Council have issued special licences to allow the killing of the beautiful (and usually protected) wild Ibex. These shy and elusive creatures are venturing down into the valleys looking for food and chomping on farmers’ crops. A lack of food and water on the hill tops means they will either die of hunger or from a hunter’s bullet. Surely some cleverly sited water butts and a few bales of hay is a better option than murder. A petition has been organised by locals to stop the killing and can be signed in the Cajamar bank in Lubrin. A few years ago one sunny summers Sunday evening; we were
having an al fresco dinner with friends when the dogs suddenly stood up attentively. There 50 metres or so above the house on the craggy hilltop behind the house was a family of seven Ibex. Such a wonderful sight as they quietly grazed, with one of them silhouetted against the evening sky as it stood as look out. Luckily the dogs had just been fed and the evening too hot for them to climb up and investigate. So we down below gazed at the Ibex high above us and they looked down at us until eventually they rounded the hill and disappeared.

Further to the concerns over Samaritans in Spain using a 902 number
Not all 902 numbers are premium rate numbers. Sadly Telefonica have lumped premium rate and premium service into the one 902 range. Whether the number is premium rate or premium service depends on the fourth number. 902 followed by 1,2,3 or 4 are premium rates costing up to four times the standard rate, and from which the receiving company benefits financially. 902 numbers followed by 5,6,7,8 or 9 are to provide a premium service, from which the receiver gains no financial benefit, but does benefit from a premium service. For example the charity Samaritans in Spain uses the number 902 88 35 35, hence the fourth digit is 8. This means that the number is not connected to any local telephone exchange. What this allows the Samaritans to do is have several phones in several locations attached to the 902 88 35 35 number. This means that whenever someone calls their number, whether they

All Samaritans in Spain calls to 902 88 numbers are charged at national call rates. From landlines and public phones the connection charge is €0.08 plus €0.04/min: Mon-Fri 20:00-08:00, weekends & public holidays and €0.07/ min: Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00. Sadly calls from mobiles are considerably more. For most providers the connection charge is €0.12 then €0.22/min: Mon-Fri 20:0008:00, weekends & public holidays and €0.36/min: Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00 It is so sad when we read that ALL 902 numbers are premium rate numbers when only some are. Many, like Samaritans in Spain are premium service numbers which actually benefits both the caller and the receiver.
REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT
Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you maybe exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_ of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds).
STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially presummer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENTOF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902-123-161 More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

MOVING BACK TO THE U.K. DUE TO ILL HEALTH LEAVING A PROPERTY IN SPAIN ON THE MARKET
Q. My mother and father need to move back to the u.k due to very bad health, with my mother moving into a home immediately on her return. They own a house and a bank account in Vera. Have you got any recommendations of things I should be thinking about from a legal point of while I am in Spain to help them organise their return. A. Absolutely. I would at least address the following matters: 1. Make sure there Spanish wills are in good order. Even if they are, it may be time to reconsider the clauses. If for example one of your parents is very ill it may not be convenient for the other partner to name him /her beneficiary. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure Internet banking is set up on their Spanish bank account. 4. Your parents may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with their Spanish assets. 5. Look in to the advantages/ disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on waiting for a better price From a tax point of view if they
are resident and over 65 it is in their advantage to sell before they lose their resident status in Spain as they are entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. When you get back to England start working on an enduring power of attorney to be used in the u.k. Very important: The above are the essential things that need to be looked into but I recommend that you and your parents visit their solicitor in Spain to run through their situation together before going back to the u.k. If you are not comfortable with their solicitor, simply make an appointment with a different solicitor but take all your paperwork with you (you must at least take copy of title deeds, NIE numbers, rates bills and copy of wills) . Depending on the circumstances, paperwork etc. it may be advantageous to take further actions or none at all. In any case it will be convenient for you to put a face to the solicitor and go through things together with him/ her and your parent to avoid nasty surprises regarding documentation in the future. What A Rate Rise Could Mean For Overseas Buyers
ben.simkins@taxesonline.es
Brits in the market for an overseas home in the second half of 2014 should factor in an interest rate rise in the UK, as well as the exchange rate, when budgeting for their foreign purchase, warned the Overseas Guide Company in August. “Servicing a mortgage in the UK is going to get more expensive within the next six months, that’s a given,” said Richard Way of www.OverseasGuidesCompany. com “Owning and running a foreign home costs money, even without a mortgage against it, so anyone considering a purchase abroad should ensure they are comfortable with their cash-flow in the UK and

consider what the effect of a hike in the interest rate would have on their monthly outgoings. We might get some clues as to how imminent a rate rise is after this week’s Bank of England meeting. “The other major consideration for buyers is the exchange rate. Sterling has had a bullish first half of the year, with gains against the euro and dollar. But again, anyone buying abroad with a mortgage later this year, should build a cushion into what they can afford in foreign mortgage repayment to account for movements in the value of Sterling, as well as interest rates affecting the mortgage.” Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

New research from Halifax shows that the majority of home owners in Britain think now is a “good time to sell” despite fluctuating house prices. UK house prices in May to July were 10.2pc higher than the same three month period in the previous year, elevated by a continuing housing supply crisis in Britain. However, the annual rate of growth has halved from the period of April to June, which saw a massive yearly house price jump of 21pc. This reinforces recent official figures from the likes of the Office of National Statistics, and Hometrack, which show the rate of house price growth month-on-month grinding to a halt. Despite this slow down in the annual growth rate, Halifax reported that the majority of UK home owners think that the next 12 months presents the best time to sell. The latest Halifax Housing Market Confidence Tracker indicates that sentiment towards selling is rising as fears grow that property values could reverse - while new buyer demand is dropping. Over half of those (57pc) surveyed by the lender believe they should sell within the next year to capitalise on price, compared to 32pc. This is the highest score of this measure since the survey’s inception. Only last week, data from Hometrack showed that house prices in Britain have stalled as the number of new buyers plummeted in July and consumer sentiment shifted from over-zealous to cautious. The rate of house price growth fell to its slowest rate in 18 months - according to a leading survey of estate agents. This drop in the growth of property values is a result interest fears, new, tighter mortgage rules and aggressive rhetoric from the Bank of England that a “hot” UK housing market, in the south east, is the biggest threat to the economic recovery. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
“Someone told me you can tell if a person’s monogamous by the size of his testicles. Gene sent me to a genetics expert to settle the bet.” The Rosie Project is just one of professor Don Tillman’s ideas to indulge his passion of science. The Wife Project is the first, followed in hot pursuit by the Father Project, culminating in the Don Tillman Project and of course the Rosie Project. Take a 39 year old geneticist called Don whose brain is wired or configured differently from the majority of people, a brilliant scientist but rather socially challenged and you’ll be right in assuming he has Asperger’s. Ironically he lectures on Asperger’s but when asked who shows symptoms of obsessive behaviour he doesn’t recognise his own behaviour as being autistic. He quotes Lazlo Hevesi in the Physics Department. He is “literal-minded to the point of lunacy.” Don doesn’t display any emotion, everything is logical and scientific. One of the things I really appreciate about the Church of England is its use of the Lectionary; a book suggesting three sets of Bible Readings each day, designed to cover the whole Bible in three years. One benefit of this is that, when preparing a sermon, I’m encouraged to use the scripture suggested, which may well be one with which I’m not particularly familiar, rather than keep using personal favourites. So, this last Sunday, the Old Testament reading set for the Evening Service we hold in Albox, was the account of the break-up of the Country of Israel (fairly topical these days, with all the troubles there), some 3000 years ago, following the death of King Solomon. The Country, at the time was tribal, and many of the other tribes had felt that the King had always favoured his own tribe of Judah, so the leaders of those other groups approached the new King, Rehoboam, requesting a more equitable deal for the future. Sadly, as is often the case with inexperience, Rehoboam, anxious to appear strong and in control, rejected their request, promising instead a tougher, more controlling regime, whereupon those ten tribes declared unilateral independence, forming the Northern Nation of Israel, leaving Rehoboam ruling over just the Southern tribe of Judah – from which ‘Judaism’ and ‘Jew’ are derived, and into which tribe, Jesus was later born. Strange therefore that today, the descendants of this one tribe of Judah, call themselves ‘Israel’ and are claiming the right to all the territory previously occupied not just by themselves, but also that belonging to the separated Northern Kingdom. So what can this story teach us? Well, as Proverbs 15 remarks “A soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger”, which seems very much the key to this story and a very important lesson for us to learn. How much better and more productive to be conciliatory rather than confrontational; to negotiate rather than demand. How vital a lesson, not just for politicians, but for all of us. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard; for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch. org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

avocados absorbed five times the amount of carotenoids than those who did not include avocados. Carotenoids include beta carotene and lycopene. Beta carotene is a precursor to vitamin A, and lycopene is a compound that reduces stroke and prostate cancer risks. Blood pressure: The combination of avocado’s high potassium content, 30 percent more than banana, with omega-3 and oleic acid are beneficial toward reducing blood pressure. Blood sugar: Avocado’s monounsaturated fats can prevent or reverse insulin resistance, a source of type 2 diabetes. The high soluble fiber of avocado helps prevent blood sugar spikes. Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is considered the basis of most noncontagious diseases. Avocados have an abundance of plant phytonutrient polyphenols and flavonoids, which have been discovered as anti-inflammatory agents. Anti-aging: The master antioxidant glutathione supports the liver and the nervous system. It is responsible for replenishing and recycling other antioxidants in the body. It is vital for a strong immune system, and avocado is one of the few foods that contain a considerable amount of glutathione. Cancer: Avocados can help protect against prostate and breast cancers. Had enough? Go get some avocados and enjoy them with sea salt, olive oil and lemon or vinegar or whatever way you find pleasurable. Source: www.naturalnews.com

Healthy brain: Dr. Daniel G. Amen, author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life considers avocados as one of the top brain-healthy foods that can help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. The folate in avocado contributes to preventing the formation of brain tangles that are considered a factor for Alzheimer’s. Avocados combine brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids with natural vitamin E, which has been clinically proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from progressing and even reversing it in its earliest stages. Healthy heart: Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats that boost heart health and help lower blood pressure. Avocado monounsaturated fats contain the phytonutrient beta-sitosterol, which was clinically proven to lower LDL and triglyceride blood levels while raising HDL. Avocados’ vitamin B6 and the natural folic acid from their high amount of folate help regulate homocysteine, which if high is a harbinger of bad heart health. The natural vitamin E and the master antioxidant glutathione in a base of avocado’s monounsaturated fat’s oleic acid are also recognized heart health boosters. Eye health: Avocado contains the carotenoid leutein, an antioxidant that specializes with protecting the eyes from oxidative stress damage leading to poor vision, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Digestion: Nutrients and enzymes in avocado reduce inflammation in the stomach and small intestine’s mucous lining. This also improves the body’s ability to absorb carotenoids and nutrients. an endangered crested black macaque grabbed his camera and started taking hundreds of pictures. When he looked at the shots, he spotted an incredible selfie of the grinning ape staring right into the camera lense. The picture went viral in newspapers, websites and magazines across the globe and the Gloucestershire photographer’s
work was thrust into the internet spotlight. But he now faces a legal battle with Wikimedia after the organisation added the image to its online collection of royalty-free images. Spokesman Tomasz Kozlowski said: “The work did not originate from Mr Slater as by his own admission he did not take the picture, the monkey did. However monkeys can’t and don’t own copyrights.”

with me following behind, obedient but superfluous. However, having located his Holy Grail, it was up to me to find a salesperson and enquire whether the Tablet in question had an instruction book. The selected Sales lad responded to my question with a sympathetic look, and explained that they don’t have instruction books any more, implying that instruction books had gone the way of the quill pen, and were now only to be found in museums. ‘I’ll give you the Web address, it’s quite easy to download the instructions.’ He volunteered encouragingly. ‘But it’ll all be in Spanish!’ Pete bleated. I kept silent; I was not looking forward to trying to translate instructions that I probably wouldn’t understand even in English. The lad looked at the two despairing dinosaurs in front of him; relics from a bygone age, when people
wrote things by hand using fountain pens, and his heart melted. ‘One moment’ he said, and disappeared. Seconds later he reappeared, with almost a quire of paper in his hand. Stuffing it in the shop printer he said ‘I print it for you. In English.’ Now that’s service, over and above the call of customer care! So where do the skirts and blouses come in? We left Media Markt and I suggested we could go home now. Pete turned on his most mulish expression. ‘We’re not going home until you’ve bought something!’ I could see that resistance was futile, so we headed for C & A where I scooped up 2 skirts and 3 blouses and headed for the Probadores with the intention of mollifying Pete by buying one of these items. They all fitted, so I bought them all – I shopped over and above the call of josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk necessity!

Are You Being Served? Nope!
The new Zenia Boulevard shopping centre near Torrevieja appears to be a great success. Living nearby as we do, we often just drop in for a coffee and something sticky at whatever time of day that takes our fancy. And whilst it’s to be expected that during the summer months the numbers are swelled by the presence of an influx of tourists, we have found throughout the year that the car parks – with a total capacity of 5000 - are always well filled and there seems to be a constant flow of shoppers seven days a week. What seems to be doing particularly well here is the evening restaurant trade and if you are travelling to anywhere other than the boulevard on the N332 after 7pm, you will have undoubtedly uttered a few naughty words as you encountered the lengthy tailbacks in both directions. Most of the restaurants and tapas bars are located on the second level overlooking the Plaza Mayor - a large open area with a raised stage at one end. With free entertainment every night at this time of year, it adds to the pleasure and overall atmosphere of the plaza and is a very agreeable way to spend a fun evening with friends. That’s if you are lucky enough to secure a balcony table. But even if you can’t, there is a large screen over the stage that often transmits the action to the greater audience and seated diners beyond. All this is great of course and

in these worrying financial times, it is particularly satisfying to see businesses doing well with so many new jobs provided. From our observations the eating houses are packed to capacity during the summer months and every weekend throughout the year – if we get there later than our usual time and our chosen establishment is full, then we simply move on to another until we are lucky enough to get a table. Many of the really popular ones that will not take reservations often have queues of potential customers eager to eat there. However . . . We had dropped by the centre last weekend for a specific item that my lovely lady wished to enquire about. But as it was late afternoon and I had no great inclination to go home and do my Gordon Ramsey routine in the kitchen (lots of cooking and even more swearing), we decided to stay on and grab a meal. The lunch hour rush had finished and it was in that inbetween time before the early diners started to converge on the place, so there were seats available almost everywhere. We were spoiled for choice and decided on an establishment where we had eaten on several occasions and where we could sit outside on the terrace facing the glistening Mediterranean about a mile away. Hard uncomfortable bench seats, but hey, you can’t have it all. There were just four of the twenty or so tables occupied with a total of ten people, all of whom seemed to be either eating or had finished their food. We sat and waited for five minutes, but nobody came and nobody acknowledged our presence. As there were no menus on the tables, I walked to the bar area and took two.
We browsed for a few more minutes, selected what we wanted and still nobody came. There appeared to be one active waiter, with three others sitting at a table at the far end of the terrace chatting. In addition there was a bar tender and a gentleman who was standing at the door where we had entered, drinking coffee. It was unclear at that point who he was as he had not greeted us as we passed close by him, or handed us menus which is the normal procedure. Still none of the waiters came anywhere near us, nor did they signal that we would be attended to and remember, the place was not busy with only a handful of customers. So we decided to give it a few more minutes and then if nothing happened, we would jump ship. Which is exactly what happened and we simply walked across the terrace into the neighbouring restaurant, where incidentally we received immediate attention. Cue Mr Coffee Head who suddenly sprang to life. It appeared that he must be either the manager or proprietor, because to our disbelief, he pursued us into the adjoining restaurant and accused us of impatience and stated that we had only been waiting for two minutes. Needless to say we read him his horoscope. Service, quality and consistency are the key ingredients to running a successful restaurant. Every customer is important - even if you think that you will be packed to the rafters every evening. We will not be returning.

over and above
I am not an enthusiastic shopper. Hunger, or a lack of toilet paper will send me to Mercadona, but to go shopping just to go shopping is not my idea of a day well spent. So how come that I bought 2 skirts and 3 blouses which I didn’t actually need? I already owned 9 skirts and 14 blouses, enough for any occasion, I would have thought, so why did I suddenly feel the need to add to my already bountiful wardrobe? It was a result of a shopping stand-off, and I lost! Pete wanted a tablet – the sort you tap, not the sort you swallow, so we headed off to Media Markt in Lorca. He homed in on the object of his desire,
alqueria
35
viewpoint
When the temperature reaches 37 degrees people start behaving very oddly. Above and below this point they are fine but when 37°C is reached people become strange, an inverse to the norm. Odd behaviour is not alien to Alqueria and its people, in fact some argue it is normality itself. As the mercury crept towards body heat the people of the Pueblo started agreeing with one another. A concept as alien as the truth is to a politician. This harmony was nerve-racking, it only increased tension. It was so incompatible with the ambience of the Pueblo, it simply didn’t work in Alqueria. All this bonhomie was unfortunate as the first riot of Summer was due to ‘kick off’ mid-morning. Rioting is important to Alqueria. It establishes a pecking order, it strengthens barrio bonds and reaffirms the hatred that one section of the population feels for the other. With the heat of the day now at blood temperature an unnatural quiet descended on the Village. People waved, cars stopped to let children and dogs cross roads, young ladies smiled at old men and vice a versa. It was scary. Normally it only took the merest glimpse of a person from the opposing barrio and everyone started oiling their respective metaphoric rifles. A problem in logistics was looming. If the riot didn’t take place it would throw the whole carefully crafted schedule of civil unrest out for the year. Fortunately Manuela’s soul was so dark and sinister she alone was unaffected by the 37° glitch.
37°C
Determined not to let her arsenal of cobblestones, carefully selected rocks and specially broken bottles go to waste, she devised a plan. Manuela knew the people of Alqueria and she knew what would make their blood run cold. She let it be known that the Prattsborough Morris Men would give daily performances in the Village Plaza every evening for a month. This information was whispered and spread through the Village like the flu virus in a bordello. Loco Paco hid his Saharan Dung Beetle Benjy for fear of it being trodden to death during one of their performances. Antonio Poyato wept openly and took to the bottle. The Village was a chill place. Alqueria was suddenly very calm once more, a fundamental silence fell on the Pueblo, it was almost tangible. The first projectiles struck a minute or so later. The Hill People attacked the Newcomers who resisted and then counter-attacked. Windows shattered and plumes of smoke spiralled into the evening air. Manuela surveyed the scene with a warm satisfaction. That warm glow one gets from normality and the familiar returned, comforting, no matter how hideous.
advance moves
Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that
tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

Good lighting will make your home feel spacious, clean and welcoming. • The key is to create a flexible scheme that takes you right through the day and all the different uses of your room. At the flick of a switch, you should be able to transform it from a bright, vibrant living space to the setting for a romantic dinner for two. Natural light It’s a fantastic asset to any home, but the quality of the light depends on the aspect of the room. •N orth facing: cold and harsh rather than direct sunlight. Changing the lighting can alter the way a room looks, particularly the dimensions, just as much changing the colour of the walls. To make your room appear larger • U se wall washers on a large expanse of light coloured ceiling. • U se uplighters to bounce light onto the ceiling and walls. • C reate panels of light at one end of the room, your eye will be pulled along towards it, making the space appear longer. • Light all four corners of the room. To make your room appear taller • Use vertical light beams. • Hang pendant lights low. To make your room appear cosier • U se several table lamps, singularly or in clusters, to create lots of little low pools of light in a large, high room. • Don’t allow light onto the ceiling.

Considering the distance and the time of year with several members returning to the UK. for holidays the large turnout was very encouraging for the long term future of the Society. The competition was a Singles Stableford format played for the Hamilton Cup donated by the family of a former member and played for annually The course was in beautiful condition. and even though it was extremely warm the day started off with ideal conditions. The wind reared its ugly head later in the day to make the conditions very challenging for the later starters. Tony Morgan finally found some long lost form by finishing in first place with 33 points, and completed a good day by having a 2 on the challenging eighth hole, a par three over water, and walking off with the sweep-stake as well. Second place was won by a Des Redding playing as a guest with 29 points with Trevor Nicholson claiming third place on count back with 27 points.
