After a period of unusually warm weather across much of the country, Spain is now set for cooler temperatures with a cold front bringing rain by the bucketful and even the first snows of the autumn. For many parts of Spain, October has been warmer than usual, with people making the most of the sunny conditions to stretch out the summer as long as possible. From Friday, however, cafés around the country could start bringing in their tables: three successive cold fronts are now forecast to sweep across the country bringing plenty of rain and even snow to mountain areas over 1,200 metres (3,900 feet). The first front will hit Galicia on Friday bringing rain and colder
temperatures to the northeast of the country on Saturday, Spain’s 20 minutos newspaper reported. A second front is to deliver wet weather to much of Spain on Sunday and Monday with the most persistent downpours in Galicia, along the north coast, and in the Pyrenees. The Canary Islands can also expect some rain. Monday will see the arrival of the third and ‘coldest’ front, with “abundant rainfall” affecting most of peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands. That is the front which will also bring snow. Temperatures will also drop 6–9C, bringing them inline with averages for this time of year. Source: www.thelocal.es/
“Shirley Valentine”
Independent Theatre is proud to present “Shirley Valentine”, written by Willy Russell and directed by Ian Jones, as their first production of their 2014/2015 season and features one of the leading lights in Amateur Theatre in Spain - Marie O’Brien in the starring role of Shirley. Shirley Bradshaw nee Valentine – who is trapped in humdrum domesticity and frequently talking to her kitchen walls, just for a bit of conversation, is lost in that in between time when the children have left home at what is left in life. “Life has certainly not begun at forty” for Shirley. But when her best friend asks her to go to the Greek Isles on holiday with her, she is suddenly pulled away from her boredom into a life-shattering adventure. Faced with romantic possibilities and sudden selfawareness, Shirley begins to see the world, and herself, in a different light. Reminiscing on her early years with Joe and the lack of discovery in her life which the present day youngsters have, she contemplates shopping in rain lashed Liverpool and what could be! Advance enquiries for this production have been heavy so we suggest you purchase your tickets as soon as possible for this adult comedy which does contain some lines with sexual innuendo, but will give you that “Feel Good” factor which we all strive for. The play is being performed at Teatro Pedro Gilabert in Arboleas on Friday and Saturday 14 and 15 November at 7.30 p.m. with a matinee at 3.30 p.m. on Sunday 16th November
2014. Tickets, which cost € 8.50 are available from, Girasol, Total Entertainment and 1 Stop Pools in Albox and from Total Entertainment (Formerly Essentials) in Arboleas and from the Independent Theatre Box Office – email: itgboxoffice@gmail. com or phone 950 439 406 Independent Theatre Group is also in rehearsal for their next production – a traditional pantomime – “The Wonderful Story of Mother Goose” by Norman Robbins, due for presentation in January 2015, which is to be followed, in April, 2015 with “Educating Rita”, and later in the year the Ray Cooney Farce “Life Begins at 40” – so plenty to look forward to. Finally – Interested joining us? Why don’t you become involved in Amateur Dramatics in the area? The Independent Theatre Group always welcomes new members and you would find tremendous opportunities to make new friends meet people and be a part of a company of like minded people. Contact us at the theatre or phone 950436581 or email independenttheatre@hotmail.com for more information Our photos show Shirley returning from “a dreadful shopping trip” and “Enjoying a glass of wine in a country where it is made” both taken in association with rehearsals Figure 1 “I don’t like shopping” Figure 2 I would love to taste the wine in the country in which it is made

Aging Spain: population to fall 5 million by 2064
Spain’s population will shrink by 5.6 million in the next 50 years with much of the population aged over 65 and living alone, new official forecasts warn. New data from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) predicts that Spain’s population will shrink by 5.6 million before 2064 and that almost 40 per cent of people will be aged over 65 by then, while the number of people living alone will increase by almost 38 per cent in the next 15 years. The Spanish Population Projection 2014-2064 report published on Tuesday showed that if current trends continue, Spain will have 1 million fewer inhabitants in 15 years time and 5.6 million fewer 50 years from now. Those who are left will be older: the percentage of people aged over 65 is forecast to rise from 18.2 percent now to 38.7 percent in 2064. The predicted decline in numbers is the result of Spain’s falling birth-rate, a trend that began in 2009. Immigration is currently rising (there was a 14.3 per
cent increase from 2013–2014) but more people will have abandoned Spain by the end of 2014 (417,191) than will have arrived (332,522). That trend is predicted to reverse after 2021. Declining birth-rates and longer life-expectancy also account for the change in demographics which will see Spain’s elderly population become larger in percentage terms. The number of Spanish people aged over 100 is predicted to rise from 13,551 to 372,000 over the next 50 years. Meanwhile, the INE’s Household Projections study, also released on Tuesday, predicts that there will be 19.2 million Spanish homes by 2029, over a million more than now. But the number of people living alone is expected to rise by 27.5 per cent, from 4,480,391 now to 5,711,125 in 2029. Source: www.thelocal.es

Urcal Fat Boys/Birds Club 2014
The Urcal Fat Boys/Birds Club will start their annual charity drive on Friday 30 October at The Palms Bar/Restaurant Urcal at 6.30pm. As in previous years the Club will be undertaking a 6-week “Slimathon” to raise funds for this year’s nominated charity (The Old People’s Residential Home in Huercal-Overa) This fundraising event has the full backing of the Ayuntamiento. We hope to help the Home in the form of raising funds to help meet some of the costs of running the home (which has received no Government support since 1995) and also in the donation of foodstuffs for them. In this respect there will be some suitable receptacles placed in The Palms in which we hope people will give generous donations of food parcels (dried/tinned/ bottled food only please).
The fundraising will continue throughout November and some of December with the final weigh-in being held on Friday 12 December, when we be holding a Grand Raffle and there will be a disco by our very own local DJ, Steve King.
The Annual Terreros ‘’San Animal’’ Petanque Championship was held on Wednesday 22nd October. A total of 467 euros was raised for the continuing sterilisation programme of feral cats within the San Juan de los Terreros area. Eighteen teams of mixed nationalities took part and was won by ‘It’s a Team 2’ and Village People in 2nd place. The event took at ‘Annie’s Bar’ where a team of volunteers, led by Maggi Taylor, worked hard throughout the afternoon
organising the event and raising money via a raffle and other fund raising activities. Our thanks go to Annie and Danni at the bar for their continued support.. San Animal is an animal charity, based in the Terreros and Aguilas area, rescuing dogs and cats, looking after them and then finding homes for them in Spain and even throughout the rest of Europe. If you would like to get involved and help in anyway you can contact the charity on its Web Site www.sananimal.org or on our face book page.
For anyone who has not yet witnessed our “Slimathon” its involves volunteers dieting for 6 weeks and being publicly weighed each Friday in the Palms at 6.30pm. Anyone not losing weight or remaining the same weight are fined and publicly humiliated (in the best possible taste). It is all done for fun and for a good cause. Anyone is welcome to attend the weigh-ins and the end night Raffle/Disco to support us - and of course anyone can register themselves for the “Slimathon” on Fri 31 Oct - all we ask is that you are there for 6.30pm prompt!!!!

The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. The origens of Albox date back to Medieval times when the ancient fort town was located on a hill nearby to its current location. In 1503 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake and most of its historical buildings were lost. The town was reconstructed from scratch in its current location.

Albox is a traditional white-washed Spanish market town with a population of around 11,000 inhabitants, of which a small percentage are foreign ex-pat residents. The town has all the facilities and service one would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. Albox has a municipal swimming pool, very typical of inland Spanish towns that don’t have access to beaches. You will find most locals frequenting the pool during the weekends and summer holidays. It opens throughout July and August. There is also a sports centre and tennis club, which also has its own swimming pool.

A large market is held every Tuesday morning and a smaller market on Saturday mornings. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Jamons (cured ham on the bone) can be found hanging from stalls and shop windows; dozens of varieties of queso (cheese), chorizo (cured sausage) and many more delicacies are on show. The market is extensive, with street upon street, a myriad of noise, colour and smells. In fact you can find just about anything in the Albox market. Source www.spain-holiday.com

If you wish to store long winter coats, or party dresses, for example, you’ll need the full height of a wardrobe to hang them in, and don’t forget drawers and shelves, for sweaters, shoes, etc.. The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, of course, and dressing the bed is as important as your choice of furniture. The trend in bed linen this year is likely to be towards brighter and warmer styles, which are reflected in colour and texture in curtains, blinds and other soft furnishings to create a sense of style in the bedroom. The easiest and most straightforward way of opening up any room is to whitewash the walls. White helps to redefine the space available in a room by distorting the mind’s perception of where the boundaries actually lie – in effect, white walls can make a small room look spacious and airy. In contrast, dark walls have the effect of closing the boundaries in considerably, therefore giving the impression of less space than there is in reality. Nevertheless, refreshingly white walls ought to be complemented by bold bedroom furniture colours. The bed in particular must be a focal point in the room, therefore it is advisable to opt for rich, deep colour schemes with vivid and imaginative patterns that will instantly draw the eye’s attention. Furthermore, it is essential that the bedroom is clutter-free and, unless it is absolutely necessary, electrical equipment in the room should be limited to a radio alarm clock and television – peace is essential. And, when it comes to bedroom furniture, a cabinet with multiple drawers or a chest or ottoman placed discretely at the end of your bed can provide crucial extra A CHIMNEY OR FLUE NEEDS storage. 6 Surefire Ways to Ease Pain
Whether your pain has just come on or you’ve lived with it for years, these triedand-tested self-help steps can bring you relief.
Get some gentle exercise
Simple, everyday activity like walking, swimming, gardening and dancing can ease some of the pain directly by blocking pain signals to the brain. Activity also helps lessen pain by stretching stiff and tense muscles, ligaments and joints. It’s natural to be hesitant if exercise is painful and you’re worried about doing more damage. But if you become more active gradually, it’s unlikely you will cause any damage or harm. The pain you feel when you start gentle exercise is because the muscles and joints are getting fitter.

30 Daily Lenses Concentrating on your breathing when you’re in pain can help. When the pain is intense it’s very easy to start taking shallow, rapid breaths which can make you feel dizzy, anxious or panicked. Instead, breathe slowly and deeply. This will help you to feel more in control of the situation and will keep you relaxed and prevent any muscle tension or anxiety from worsening your pain.
Counselling can help with pain
Pain can make you tired, anxious, depressed and grumpy. This can make the pain even worse, making you fall into a downward spiral. Be kinder to yourself. Living with pain isn’t easy and you can be your own worst enemy by being stubborn, not pacing your activities every day and not accepting your limitations. Some people find it useful to seek help from a counsellor, psychologist or hypnotherapist to discover how to deal with their emotions in relation to
Distract yourself
Shift your attention onto something else so the pain isn’t the only thing on your mind. Get stuck into an activity that you enjoy or find stimulating. Many hobbies, like photography, sewing or knitting, are possible even when your mobility is restricted.
Keep in touch with friends and family
Don’t let pain mean that you lose contact with people. Keeping in touch with friends and family is good for your health and can help you feel much better. Try shorter visits, maybe more often, and if you can’t get out to visit people, phone a friend, invite a family member round for a coffee or have a chat with your neighbour. Aim to talk about anything other than your pain, even if other people want to talk about it.
Relax to beat pain
Practising relaxation techniques regularly can help to reduce persistent pain. There are many types of relaxation techniques, varying from breathing exercises to types of meditation. Source: Almeria Angels

Risen From The Ashes
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Before I start on the back of ‘the box’, I would like to include an email that I received this morning. “I’m sitting outside a bar in Vera Playa writing this on my iPhone. This is a device we have in the year 2014 that enables us to communicate with each other remotely. Since you are clearly living in about 1984 you won’t know that Steve Jobs got fired from Apple and then got re-hired (sadly died of cancer). Anyway, the iPhone is one of many wonderful Apple products. … You have an exciting future to look forward to but I won’t spoil it by telling you any more” As you can see, there was more than a little ‘tongue -in-cheek’ humour behind the comments and it did, indeed, brighten my day, but it required a response to accurately describes the reason for this scheme of articles. “My specialities are computers and teaching, for which I have the appropriate levels of education …. The one recurring issue with many of the people that I deal with, is that they are afraid of their computer. This series of articles is designed to remove that fear and bring an understanding of what computers are and can be used for.” We all value our computer and therefore don’t want to do anything to damage it and therein lies the fear! If you go into many larger business, you will find that there are still Desktop and Tower computers. Not everyone likes the ultra compact Laptop and Tablet / Phone devices! So onwards to the back of the tower to complete the look at what you see! At the top of your Tower, (This is the normal way these things are organised, although yours might be a little different) will be: • The power supply plug socket and if your really honoured, an ‘On/Off’ switch. • Below are 2 small circular DIN sockets where you plug in the keyboard and mouse (Purple Keyboard and Green Mouse). If you forget to plug in the keyboard, the computer will tell you “Keyboard not
connected – press F1 to continue”!!!! What muppet thought that up :-) • We see a ‘D’ shaped socket that has 9 pins – this is the almost obsolete ‘Serial’ port, simply because it is too slow to ‘catch a cold’. • The 25 pin Parallel (Printer) port in its strange pink has been superseded by the ‘USB’ port (a rectangular hole about 1½ cm long) which is further down the case. • The video out (VGA -Video Graphics Array) which is the Blue one. • Then the audio connections which have 3 small coloured plugs (the minimum standard number), which are: • Pink (Microphone input) • Light Blue (Audio Input) • Light (Lime) Green (Speaker Output). Yours may have more but these are the minimum required! • Finally, The connector for the Network (Internet) cable. All these connectors have a design that prevents you from connecting anything incorrectly, so there shouldn’t be any concern about getting it ‘Wrong’ – it won’t happen and you can’t damage anything if you’re gentle while inserting the plugs into the connectors. Why this much detail? Simply because this design has been around since the late 70’s and works so well, that a reason to change it, as yet, hasn’t been found! Laptops are still evolving. The keyboard and Mouse are integrated and the ‘Parallel’ and ‘Serial’ ports aren’t required and have been replaced with USB ports. There are usually only 2 audio ports (Microphone and Speaker/Earphone) and are (again usually) clearly marked. This makes for a compact, portable design. I’m now off to my computer clinic. Have a lovely weekend.

Pompeii Pompeii was founded 2700 years ago by the Osci tribe. The next few hundred years saw the Phoenicians, Etruscans and then the Samnites in occupation. Around 400BC the Romans took control fortifying it in the process. The Appian Way passes within 30km of Pompeii, so goods were easily transported to Rome from the bustling port near Pompeii Pompeii had a cleverly designed piped water system which fed 25 street fountains, private houses, businesses and public baths. In time of drought the water would first be turned off at the baths then the houses and finally businesses leaving the street fountains to supply the populace. Pompeii was a hedonistic tourist resort with as many as 20,000 inhabitants. The surrounding countryside was thronged with villas belonging to Roman elite. In 62AD a powerful earthquake struck the town damaging every building and crippling the water supply. The Emperor Nero was performing in a nearby theatre
Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the resurrected World Trade Centre is again opening for business, marking an emotional milestone for both New Yorkers, the American nation and in a lesser sense I suspect, the world. It was a news story that almost passed me by and no doubt will have passed others by, in a week again dominated by the threat of Ebola, Extremist terror groups and immigration. The $3.9 billion skyscraper that dominates the Manhattan skyline is America’s tallest building. It’s the centrepiece of the 16 acre site where the decimated twin towers once stood and where more than 2,700 people died on 11th September 2001; buried under smoking mounds of fiery debris. Who can forget where they were on the day the world held its breath as it watched the terrifying images of planes crashing into the two buildings and then their eventual collapse – it was a harrowing moment in modern history. ‘The New York City skyline is whole again,’ said the executive director of the Port Authority of New York at the opening ceremony. From the northeast corner of the site, the tower overlooks the National 11th September Memorial & Museum, built in the footprints of the twin towers. Its stated aim is to honour those who perished on that sunny September morning. For years, the grisly pit where workers found mostly body parts was dubbed the ground zero of the aerial terror attack. Now, the illuminated spire of One World Trade Centre serves as a beacon to planes that fly over the city, the view stretches from Manhattan to the Atlantic Ocean. At night, the incandescent steel and glass behemoth can be seen from vessels in New York Harbour approaching Manhattan. The eight year construction of the 1,776 foot high skyscraper came after years of political, financial and legal infighting that threatened to derail the project. The spirit of renewal did not quash memories of the horrific act of terror, but the area has prospered in recent years beyond anyone’s imagination. About 60,000 more residents now live there — three times more than before 9/11. Still, it’s a bittersweet victory, one achieved with the past in mind. The high rise was built with steel reinforced concrete that makes it as terror attack proof as possible. But will it be enough? Will some crazed terror group – whoever they may be - see it as another challenge to their own particular desire for world domination, gained by murder, threat and intimidation? Do we live in a safer world, brought about by the invasion of Iraq in the aftermath of the Twin Towers assault? President Bush declared the US would eradicate ‘the purveyors of evil’ from this planet. Have they? My guess is that the world is as stable or unstable as we make it and that something as similarly outrageous may occur in the future – God forbid – and we are powerless to stop it. It’s the nature of the World in which we live. In this month especially, spare a thought for those who died, not only in past conflicts, but in the horrifying infernos of the Twin Towers. By Paul Martin

and as he left the building it collapsed after him. Nero looked upon this as an omen of good luck. Although the earthquake was a portent of much worse to come perhaps it was Nero’s thinking that swayed most locals to stay on as the Romans were a highly superstitious bunch. Rebuilding work started in earnest and evidence of this can still be seen in what remains there today. The area suffered regular but smaller quakes leading up to the cataclysmic event 17 years later that’s now made Pompeii infamous. In autumn 79AD Vesuvius erupted, shooting ash, rocks and poisonous gases high into the sky, the eruption was seen from hundreds of kilometres away. A fine cloud of ash rained down from the sky. as much as six inches (15cm) an hour. I remember in my school days being taught that people suffocated on the ash in their sleep. This is now known to be incorrect as their cause of death was altogether
more horrid. As the magma chamber lost its power the huge columns of debris started to fall causing pyroclastic surges of up to 100 km/h of superheated gas and pulverised rock to rush down the mountain sides. Pompeii was in the way of these surges and the 250C gases instantaneously burnt the inhabitant’s lungs and as they died all their muscles contracted so they dropped and lay in foetal positions which are how we see them preserved today. The eruption left Pompeii and the surrounding area buried under up to 80 feet of ash. It was custom to rebuild after a disaster but the damage was so complete that the area was never repopulated. Only in 1599 when digging a water channel were some remains discovered. Pompeii’s lewd past was revealed as erotic frescos were unearthed which were rapidly reburied
as they were deemed too risqué for the times. In 1738 when digging the foundations for a new palace the remains were discovered again and work continued up until a few years ago when the funds dried up. It’s a UNESCO World heritage site but sadly three times in the last 15 years has this certification been called into doubt as currently the place is suffering severe degradation. Three years ago the so called ‘House of the Gladiators’ collapsed and currently less than a third of the buildings that visitors could see in the 1960s are open to the public. It’s estimated that over 300 million Euros are needed to further preserve the site. Mind you with Vesuvius normally erupting every 20 years or so and the last eruption being in 1944 it’s well overdue so perhaps it will soon get covered over again.

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Follow up from our article about the sentence from the ECJ in which we try to explain who can attempt to claim and who can not.
Recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) judgment relating to Spanish inheritance tax. Case C-127/12 establishes that Spain must stop discriminating against non-resident heirs. We are receiving many e-mails from people who consider they are entitled to make the claim. Please note that not everyone that has paid is entitled to claim. It is quite complex to determine who can attempt to claim: In practice if you have received an inheritance in Andalucia you can only claim if in your case all of the following is true: 1. T he inheritor or the deceased were non residents in Spain at the time of death. 2. C laimants must be EU Country resident at that time of passing 3. C laimants have paid the Inheritance Taxes in Spain.
were direct family descendants or spouses. 7. T he heir has received a total inheritance (in principle we understand worldwide)of no more than 175000 euro in total . If their are various heirs and one has received less and the other more than this amount it is possible to put in a claim for the one that has received less. Be aware that if you claim when their has been no discrimination it is highly likely that the judge will make you pay for the court costs, so even if you have a no win no fee agreement with your solicitor, you may end up paying the governments legal fees. Do not claim if you do not comply with all the requirements above . Please note that the above is only for Andalucia. For other areas of Spain please consult your solicitor. One last note: This claim has to be made using the courts, and it could take a long time as even if you win in the first instance the government will probably appeal. In any case if you comply with the above it is probably worth making.
4. T he amount paid must be no less than 4,000€

5. C laimants have made the payment of taxes within the last 4 years from the current date.

Book review the shock of the fall by Nathan Filer
“ I looked in the rain clouds, fallen leaves, sideways glances. I searched for him in the places I had come to expect him. In running tap water. In spilled salt. I listened in the spaces between words.” The book won the Costa Book Awards in 2014 and was the first debut win since 2006. The main character is Matthew Homes a 19 year old boy suffering from schizophrenia. He has been sectioned and is receiving psychiatric treatment. Matthew is a convincing character suffering a cruel disease, trapped in the ever changing world of mental illness. Comparisons have been made with “The Curious Incident.” Mark Haddon. Both boys suffer pain and confusion which the authors convey powerfully. Ten years previously, Matthew and his older brother, Simon who was a Down Syndrome child, went on holiday with their parents to a caravan park in Dorset. Children were forbidden from going down to the beach themselves because the path was steep and uneven so it was dangerous. Matthew often did things he wasn’t allowed to do and when he headed towards the beach, Simon followed. Early on in the story, Matthew has a fall followed by an aftershock. “By the time Simon caught up with me, at the twist in the path where exposed roots ensnare unsuspecting ankles-I was wailing like a baby.” Amongst many things, Simon suffered from hypotonia, a weakness in his muscles. He was so worried by the fall that he picked his brother up and carried him all

pause for thought For most Churches, certainly in Britain, the Service held on Remembrance Day (November 9th this year) is one of the most popular and busiest of the year. Attendance in fact often exceeds that of both Christmas and Easter, the two great festivals of the Christian faith, as people from all walks of life come to remember with gratitude those who gave their lives so that we who remain can enjoy the freedom we have today. As the years pass, even the Second World War can seem a distant memory and many question the need for so potent a reminder of the horrors of war. But the very fact that we have the freedom to travel and to choose for ourselves where we wish to live is clear evidence of the benefits we have gained from the sacrifices made so long ago. So it is right and fitting that we do indeed remember them, together with those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts, thanking God for their lives, their service and their sacrifice. And as we remember them, we also similarly remember the life and death of Jesus, so many centuries earlier, who gave his life so that we may enjoy freedom from God’s judgement on all that we’ve done wrong. So not just on Remembrance Sunday, but week by week we, along with many other Christians scattered around the globe, meet together to remember him in the bread and wine, the symbols of his ultimate sacrifice, rejoicing that through him we may be preserved not just for this life, but for eternity. So let’s rejoice at the privilege of being able to live in relative peace here in Spain. Let’s thank God for each new day we enjoy in this wonderful location. And let us remember with gratitude all those who lost their lives so we can enjoy these wonderful privileges today, as we join together with the Royal British Legion, either in Mojacar on the 9th, or at Alfoquia or Aljambra on Armistice Day, November 11th. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard; for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www. mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

Baked potato skins with smoked salmon and fresh dill
ingredients
8 small baking potatoes, about 200g (7 oz) each 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 20g (¾ oz) butter 125g (4½ oz) smoked salmon trimmings 1 tbsp lemon juice 150g (5½ oz) fromage frais 1 tbsp capers, drained and chopped 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill salt and pepper small sprigs of fresh dill to garnish
Method
Preheat the oven to 200ºC (gas mark 6). Scrub the potatoes and dry them with kitchen paper. Thread them onto metal skewers – this helps them to cook more quickly. Brush the skin of the potatoes with 1 tbsp of the oil, then sprinkle with a little salt. Arrange on a baking tray and bake for 1–1¼ hours or until tender. Remove the potatoes from the skewers and cut them in half lengthways. Scoop out the flesh, leaving a layer of potato next to the skin about 1cm (½ in) thick. (Use the scooped-out flesh for fish cakes or mash to make a savoury pie topping.) Cut each piece in half lengthways again, and place flesh side up on a large, clean baking tray. Melt the butter with the remaining 1

Method
Heat half the oil in a heavybased saucepan. Add the onions, garlic and a pinch of sugar. Stir, cover and cook gently over a low heat for 30 minutes. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 200°C (gas 6). Mix the remaining oil and butter together. Take a half sheet of filo and brush with a little of the oil mixture, then place three more pieces on top at angles to each other to form a star shape, lightly oiling each sheet. Scatter a quarter of the onions in the centre of the pastry and sprinkle with a quarter of the walnuts. Place one half of a goat’s cheese on top. Scatter
over 1/2 tsp of the thyme leaves and season with pepper. Gather up the edges of the pastry and pinch tightly together to enclose the filling and make the shape of a purse. Repeat to make three more purses. Place the purses on a non-stick baking sheet. Brush lightly with the remaining oil mixture. Bake for 10–15 minutes until golden. If liked, tie each purse with a sprig of thyme. Serve immediately. Source: www.allrecipes.co.uk

viewpoint the airship
As all borders with Spain are sealed and the export of Remitroot products halted Alqueria was in an even sorrier state than usual. There were no political initiatives to reopen trade with the Pueblo as the Japanese Remitroot substitute, Gremittoot sustained those addicted for the time being. Remitroot berries, leaves and stalks rotted in Poyato’s warehouse. Urgent meetings of the Village elders were called, convened, degenerated into fist fights and were adjourned. Supplies were running low, tempers were running short and what’s worse people were starting to sober up. Poyato came to the rescue with a bold plan, a rather stupid one but bold nonetheless. He proposed to build an airship fuelled with the gas from rotting Remitroot berries. The gas is lighter than air, the foul smell and its tendency to explode at awkward moments seemed a small price to pay. The airship was to be filled with barrels of Remitroot Whisky, floated over the Mediterranean where a rendezvous with a tanker would be arranged. The Whisky would be pumped into the tanker which would deliver it to an agent who would arrange its sale. What could go wrong? The fabric of the airship posed the first problem. Using silk from the underwear belonging to the ladies of Alqueria was mooted. Unfortunately they are a promiscuous lot and didn’t possess underwear. Manuela even had to look the word up in her dictionary. The now dried Remitroot stalks provided the solution. Shredded and spun into a yarn they were then woven into an airtight
fabric. It was a truly organic craft. Construction, preparation and launching went surprisingly if worryingly well. Christened the ‘A 101’ it soared into the air. The Remitroot gas lifted the craft above the clouds, its nose then turned southward towards the open sea and the waiting tanker. The good ship ‘Carrycrapp’ was soon transferring the Remitroot Whisky into its tanks. The ‘A 101’ hovered above, its leaky system of hoses reaching down to the Tanker’s deck. The tanker’s crew helped themselves liberally to the Whisky leaving them feeling rather light footed from its effect as an aphrodisiac. When the transfer was complete the Tanker sailed into the sunset with its crew giggling in the dark. Shortly after the successful return of the Airship the World Food Organisation declared the Japanese substitute, Gremittoot safe for human consumption. No side effects, hallucinationary, erotic or otherwise had been reported. This of course made the product mundane and it soon lost its appeal. Those in international high places addicted to Remitroot pulled strings and the border restrictions applied to Alqueria were lifted. Remitroot once more flowed freely.
Big Deal
I have a cold. To me a cold is a big deal; I grant that generally speaking one doesn’t have to be blue lighted to hospital when suffering from a cold, but it still is sufficiently debilitating that carrying on with your daily life becomes an uphill struggle. ‘They’ say that a cold is 3 days coming, 3 days with you and 3 days going. Yeah, well……It starts with the sore throat, when to speak, or even swallow, is the equivalent of releasing a lava flow down the throat. That is the first 3 days accounted for. Then the whole thing moves up into the head, where it settles down and spreads out, occupying every inch of available space. Your brain becomes so constricted by the goo now filling every millimetre within the confines of your carapace that it becomes completely dysfunctional; thinking becomes impossible; moving your head in any direction is to invite explosion of the skull, and bending forward is to risk the forces of extreme pressure from within combining with the pull of gravity, resulting in your eyeballs b e i n g forcibly ejected josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk
By Jos Biggs
from their sockets. Even hearing is impaired, due to the viscosity of the goo surrounding your auditory canal. That accounts for the 3 days with you. Now there is only the 3 days going. 3 days? Don’t you believe it! There is no way short of applying a pressure hose that you are going to shift that amount of detritus from inside your head within 3 days! Instead it dribbles out in a turgid stream, necessitating the constant application of a handkerchief to the nose. This is the cold’s finest moment. It still has complete control over your brain, which has as its primary concerns retention of the eyeballs in their sockets and control by handkerchief over the sludge emitting from your nose. Noses are designed to come into contact with rose petals, jasmine flowers and Touche éclat foundation cream, not constantly being rubbed by Pañuelos de papel. Is it any wonder that it swells to resemble a well grown beetroot in size and colour? And then of course there is the cough. It will completely disrupt normal conversation, manifest itself as soon as absolute silence is necessary, and make sleep impossible for you and anyone unlucky enough to be sharing a bed, or even a house with you. It will be with you for weeks, as unwelcome and as hard to shift as a leech at a blood donor’s session! So to me a cold is a big deal!
Alqueria regained prosperity and the Airship incident was never spoken of again.
2014 week 6 There were some absolutely fab costumes and makeup for this Halloween special week and with Zoe Ball standing in for Claudia who unfortunately had one of her children sick, added tremendously to the show for me with her dry wit and ‘banter’ with the celebrities upstairs after their performances. Opening this week were Sunetra Sarker and Brendan with their Jive to Painted Love. This was a high energy very fast jive which Sunetra struggled with from the off, I felt she was fighting to keep up with the music and as a result her dancing suffered somewhat. I was also aware that she was trying to apply the technical aspects of the dance which made her somewhat stiff in performance and was for me not one of her best dances. I gave her 6 and the judges 27. Next out were Allison Hammond and Aljaz and an American Smooth to Wuthering Heights. This was a nicely characterised performance which was soft fluid and graceful as long as you didn’t look from the waist down. Oops! she was flat footed and had extremely poor footwork for the foxtrot based smooth and for that reason I gave her 6 and the judges 26. Simon Webb and Kristina then performed a Paso Doble to a very strange piece of music which was way too fast for a Paso Doble. That said
35
Simon was a very strong male dancer, had intensity and excellent lines despite the speed, the only thing that suffered a little was the shaping - impossible to achieve to this piece of music and such a pity. I gave him 9 and the judges I felt a little mean with 29. Steve Backshall and Ola then danced a Charleston to Dem Bones. Steve and Ola performed some very complex lifts within this routine and unfortunately I felt that Steve was more concerned with pulling off the lifts than with the Charleston and as a result he made several errors within the choreography which marred what should have been a showstopping performance. I gave him 5 and the judges 26. Pixie Lott and Trent then came out with a Tango, again to an odd piece of music. Again beautifully characterised with some complex choreography and apart from some problems with Pixie’s right arm at times, you couldn’t tell who the professional dancer was. I awarded her 9 and the judges 33. Judy Murray and Anton were next out with an American Smooth. I have to say Judy was ok in the lifts when her feet were off the floor, otherwise oohh!! Stiff, awkward and uncomfortable spring to mind. I fail to see how someone who should be so supple is so stiff on the dance floor! I gave her 2 and the judges 20.
By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635584 431
Jake Wood and Janette then performed a Paso Doble to Black Betty. Jake never fails to get into character of whatever dance he is performing. This week however, I found him lacking in strength probably due to the fact that he isn’t using his feet and ankles as much as he should be. He also needed much more shaping in his lines and as a result I gave him 8 and the judges 29. Caroline Flack and Pasha then performed a Samba to Le Freak. This was yet another ‘disco’ Samba, again choreographed to the music which was also way too fast. As a result Caroline was unable to get sufficient Samba bounce action into some of her basic steps which was otherwise a clean, slick performance with great legs and arms. I awarded her 9 and the judges 32. Next were Scott Mills and Joanne and their Foxtrot. He was dressed as Uncle Fester from the Adams Family and I have to say it suited his non-dance!! I don’t know what Joanne is doing with him but for me there has been virtually no improvement from Week 1. Non existent technique and as Bruno said it was ‘Strictly No Dancing’ and I have to agree. I gave him 3 (purely for his character Uncle Fester!) and the judges 24. Mark Wright and Karen then performed a Jive to Little Shop of Horrors. After being in the bottom 2 a couple of weeks ago Mark
has made an incredible improvement. His Jive was so light on his feet, his kicks and flicks and knee lift were superb just lacking a little more bounce on the Jive chasse and occasionally a little too cautious and upright on some of the basic moves. Otherwise an excellent performance well done Mark most improved for this week! I gave him 9 and the judges 35. Closing this weeks Halloween show were Frankie Bridge and Kevin with a Tango. Again, and what we have come to expect from Frankie, it was a great intense characterisation of the dance. Another strange piece of music but it didn’t detract from her performance at all. There are just a few occasions when her core frame collapsed a little so I gave her 9 and the judges 37. So this weeks top 2 were Frankie and Mark with the bottom 2 yet again Scott and Judy. But the public’s bottom 2 were Scott and Allison and as a result Scott finally left the show after a majority decision from the judges after the dance off. With some of my ‘middle’ 5 making a break for those top spots will anyone else bounce towards the top next week? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime come and join in the ‘strictly’ gossip at one of our classes. Until then Keep Dancing!

Each year the nation expresses its unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion’s charity work through the Poppy Appeal, emphasising the need to help all generations of the Armed Forces and their families - today and for the rest of their lives.
Why do we wear a poppy?
An American teacher, Moina Bell Michael, inspired by John McCrae’s 1915 poem In Flanders Fields, began selling silk poppies to friends to raise money for the ex-Service community. McCrae, a doctor serving in the First World War with the Canadian Armed Forces, was moved to write the poem about the poppies that grew after the aftermath and devastation of the bloody fighting in the Flanders and Picardy regions of Belgium and Northern France. “Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw, The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow, In Flanders Fields,” he wrote. In 1920 the poppy was proclaimed as the United States’ national emblem of Remembrance and the following year Madame Guerin, a Frenchwoman, sold millions to raise funds for rehabilitation in areas of France. She also sent women to London to sell poppies and persuaded Earl Haig to adopt it for the British Legion. The first official Poppy Day was held in Britain on 11 November 1921.
remembrance
The Royal British Legion is the national custodian of Remembrance, a role which ensures that those who gave their lives for peace and freedom are remembered. In 1921, the year the Legion was formed, ‘Armistice Day’ was formally adopted as the national day of Remembrance and the Legion was charged in its Royal Charter with organising “Festivals of Remembrance, services and parades to perpetuate the memory of sacrifices made during service with Our Armed Forces in war and peace”. In the years which have passed since then, the Legion has been responsible for organising
national, regional and local ceremonies of Remembrance to reflect the nation’s concern that the human cost of war should not be forgotten. These include: The annual Poppy Appeal. Every year the Legion mobilises a countrywide network of Poppy Appeal collectors to meet the enormous public demand for poppies - the nation’s symbol of Remembrance. The Two Minute Silence at 11am on 11 November. The nation pauses to honour those who have given their lives for peace and freedom. The Legion has been instrumental in reinstating this in the nation’s calendar.
fIELD OF REMEMBRANCE
Each November The Royal British Legion creates Fields of Remembrance to pay tribute to all those who have bravely served in our Armed Forces and who are sadly no longer with us. In 2010, an additional Field at Wootton Bassett was added to the traditional sites of London and Cardiff, to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives serving in Afghanistan. In 2011, a fourth Field was opened in Belfast. The Fields become a sea of Remembrance Crosses with scarlet poppies - a touching symbol of Remembrance and tribute to the memory of ex-Service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their country.

Questions over border laws in Ceuta and Melilla Podemos party tops new poll
News
Eight months after registering just 0.2 percent in political polls, Spain’s anti-austerity Podemos party has charged to first place in a major poll of voting intentions, a further blow to the scandal-hit Spanish government. Podemos, which grew out of Spain’s ‘indignant’ movement would receive 27.7 percent of the vote if general elections were held in Spain tomorrow, according to the poll published by Spain’s leftleaning El Pais newspaper on Sunday. That puts the party which stormed to prominence after winning five seats in the European Elections in May a clear seven percentage points ahead of the Spain’s ruling Popular Party which would receive 20.7 percent of votes. The result also puts Podemos, which means “We can” in Spanish, ahead of the opposition socialists who would win 26.2 percent of the vote. The results are also a sign of the frustration felt by Spanish people as Spain’s two largest parties struggle to deal with two new corruption scandals. Recently, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy apologized in the wake of raids which saw police make 37 arrests as part of an investigation into a kickbacks scheme in which politicians and public officials from both major parties allegedly received illegal commissions from companies in return for political favours including the awarding of contracts for construction and infrastructure projects. Those revelations followed hot on the heels of another scandal which saw top banks executives at two major Spanish banks allegedly using secret credit cards
to make private, undeclared purchases. Among those named in the investigation are former IMF chief and Popular Party member Rodrigo Rato. The new El Pais poll shows the Popular Party has been particularly hard hit by these scandals, with 20 percent of its voters saying they would abstain in Spanish general elections expected to be held in 2015. The message from Podemos was one of caution with Íñigo Errejón calling for party members to keep “a cool head” and keep an eye on the long game. “We are at the turning point of two eras,” Errejón tweeted, a reference to the end of a two-party system which has dominated Spanish politics since the country’s return to democracy after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975. Podemos members recently participated in a poll on the future direction of the party, electing not to participate in municipal elections in Spain in May 2015 and instead setting stall to be possible election winners in upcoming general elections. Interior Commissioner sends harsh letter asking about immigrant beating and deportations. The European Commission is questioning whether the Civil Guard’s immigration containment along Spain’s African borders is legal.
Interior Commissioner Cecilia Malmström has sent a letter to Spain’s interior minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, expressing concern about the alleged beating of an African immigrant by a Spanish law enforcement officer on October 15, when a group of undocumented individuals were attempting to jump over the fence separating Moroccan territory from the Spanish exclave of Melilla. This year has marked a record for illegal immigration in Melilla, which 4,000 migrants have managed to reach “A practice of this sort constitutes a violation of EU legislation,” concludes the commissioner in a letter to which EL PAÍS has had access, and whose tone is unusually severe compared with regular diplomatic communications. The reproach is based on video footage released by the Melilla migrant support group Prodein, which shows a Civil Guard beating an immigrant, who falls off the fence, apparently unconscious, and is immediately returned to the Moroccan side. The government delegation in the city claims that the Civil Guard officers were also assaulted by the migrants, and that the individual who appears in the video was not hurt. The letter was sent on October 24. This Saturday Malmström will become trade commissioner in the new European Commission, a body that

has refused to comment on her letter despite requests by this newspaper. This is not the first time that Malmström and Fernández have clashed over Spain’s policies in the exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, which are routinely the object of massive crossing attempts by sub-Saharan migrants seeking to reach Europe. Both officials had a wellpublicized confrontation in February following the drowning of 15 migrants who were trying to reach Ceuta and were shot at with rubber bullets by the Civil Guard. This year has marked a record for illegal immigration in Melilla, which 4,000 border transients have managed to reach. In the last decade, 28,000 people have outsmarted the border controls in Ceuta and Melilla despite the €140 million invested to stop illegal immigration. Another 200 migrants attempted to cross into Melilla on Friday morning at 6.30am. A day earlier, a group of 20 people tried their luck, and on Wednesday at least three managed to enter Spanish territory. The temporary migrant shelter Centro de Estancia Temporal de Inmigrantes (CETI) is currently housing around 1,300 people, three times its official capacity. Fernández Díaz has said at the Council of Europe that “Spain has the obligation to protect, patrol and safeguard its borders” and that his government exercises “full respect for human rights in connection with the humanitarian dimension of a phenomenon that is often tragic.” Source: Elpais.com

Jaguar SUV spotted testing in Britain
Jaguar’s upcoming SUV has been spied in testing on UK soil for the first time The new Jaguar SUV has been spotted undergoing testing in the UK by Auto Express reader Phil Mullin. It looks like a disguised Range Rover Evoque, but like the previous sighting of the Jaguar SUV winter testing in March this year, its nose resembles C-X17 SUV concept - hinting at Jaguar branding rather than Land Rover. The image also shows an extended wheelbase and slightly bigger track than the Evoque, as well as slightly longer front and rear overhangs, which tie in with the concept car’s size and shape. The new SUV is expected to be launched in 2016, although Jaguar has not confirmed anything about the production car yet. The number plates confirm that this test mule is branded as a Jaguar, registered in March this year. It’s sporting a 2.0-litre diesel engine, although it’s not likely to be one of
the new ‘Ingenium’ engines made at Jaguar Land Rover’s new £500 million engine plant opened last Thursday. The 2016 car will certainly use these new engines when it launches, however. We expect the SUV to start from around £33,000, in between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport in the Jaguar Land Rover range. We also expect to see some prototype bodyshells testing at some point next summer, ahead of the 2016 release date. Source: www.autoexpress.co.uk
