The Independent Theatre Group Still Out in Front Before the long summer break, The Independent Theatre Group is returning, for the second time in 5 weeks, following on from the success of “Shirley Valentine” in Los Gallardos, it now presents a fast flowing comedy direct from it’s smash hit run in London’s West End - “Wife Begins at Forty”. By Masters of Farce Arne Shulton, Earl Barret and Ray Cooney. Once again the play is produced and directed by Ian Jones who has the pleasure of presenting some of our loyal and well loved members, who many will have seen before in our previous productions, and backed up by our many backstage crew and Front of House team. The Group, which started 9 years ago with the Ray Cooney Farce – “Run for Your Wife” has, since it’s formation, regularly returned to this genre over the years. This story has nearly all the usual attributes of farce, for which we are well known. - Six doors, double windows, double meanings, innuendoes, confusion and chaos, the list goes on. We say nearly as in this there are only 5 doors!!!!. This delightful comedy was given it’s first highly successful production by Ray Cooney’s Theatre of Comedy Company. It seems that, for some people, forty is a rather traumatic age. For Linda Harper, it certainly appears to be, as she starts worrying three years before her fortieth birthday. Dissatisfied spiritually and physically with her seventeen-year marriage to the slightly staid George, Linda decides to leave. In fact, it is George
who moves out, giving Linda a chance to “find herself” through a variety of courses including aerobics and sculpting. When George returns to the family home a few weeks later to sort out maintenance arrangements, with the help of neighbours Roger and Betty, he and Linda discover that the flames of passion are not quite dead, albeit in need of a little fanning.

Internet scammers con holidaymakers
British holidaymakers were conned out of £2.2m last year through internet-based scams, a report has shown. Criminal groups have targeted online booking firms in order to swindle money from unsuspecting customers. Many only discover they have been duped when they arrive at their accommodation and find no booking has been made. The majority of those who had been defrauded paid by methods such as bank transfer or cash with no means of getting their money back. Travel association ABTA, police and the government’s Get Safe Online service have joined forces to urge potential fraud victims to exercise caution when booking a holiday over the internet following the report from the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau. The report reveals there were 1,569 cases of holiday booking fraud reported to the police’s ActionFraud team last year, with one person losing £62,000 in a scam relating to a bogus timeshare scheme. A third of victims said the fraud had a substantial impact on their health as well as their financial wellbeing and 167 victims said the impact of the crime was so severe they needed medical treatment. Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, said: “Holiday fraud is a particularly distressing form of fraud as the loss to the victim is not just financial but it can also have a high emotional impact. “Many victims are unable to get away on a long-awaited holiday or visit to loved ones and the financial loss is accompanied by a personal loss.” Those most commonly targeted are aged 30-49, with spikes of reported fraud in the summer months and in December. Only a small proportion of those who were defrauded paid by credit or debit card,
where some form of redress is available. The most common types relate to fake plane tickets, hacking accounts, bogus adverts online, and websites. Sports and religious trips have often been particularly targeted because of the limited availability of accommodation and tickets and consequent higher prices, according to the study. Philippa Farrow, who rents out her house in Umbria, Italy, said its not just customers who can suffer. She explained that scammers often initiate contact with home owners, asking them “plausible questions” about matters such as availability. “The scammer who caught me did this and then sent me a document with a list of the party’s names which I unwittingly opened,” said Miss Farrow, from Oxford. “This enabled him to hack into my email account and set up a filter so all enquiries from the websites my property was listed on were diverted to his email account. “He then started to accept bookings and was actually quite abusive to the people he was corresponding with. “It was only because I was able to see the conversation trail that I could catch him out - just before he was about to get two large deposits worth thousands from the US and Australia.” Miss Farrow, who contacted the customers involved to warn them what was happening, added: “I don’t think I lost credibility but it is worrying what happened.” In 2014 the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and World Cup in Brazil were targeted, with numerous people having paid for non-existent accommodation or tickets. bbc.com

Louis Walsh: ‘I’m done with X Factor
Louis Walsh says he may not be returning to X Factor this year. Speaking on Irish TV he says: “I think I’m done with X Factor. I’ve done 11 seasons. “That’s a long time on television. I think they’re going to change the show. I think they’re going to get new faces.” An X Factor spokesperson told Newsbeat Simon Cowell is the only judge confirmed for this year’s X Factor at this time. Louis has been a judge on X Factor since it started in 2004, having been replaced briefly in 2007 by Brian Friedman. Dermot O’Leary has said he won’t be returning to host the show when it returns this summer. Louis was speaking on Ireland’s The Seven O’Clock Show. “I don’t know who’s back. I know Dermot’s gone and I think Olly is working with them and I think Simon is definitely back because he owns the show.” The 62-year-old manager has only won the X Factor once in 2005 with Shayne Ward. He says he hasn’t been asked to return to the show but would he return if he was asked? “I would have to think about it,” he says. “My day job is a manager and I’ve kind of neglected that. I want to get back to being a manager.” Bbcnewsbeat.co.uk

How a tiny Castellón village became Spain’s street art capital
Around a decade ago, the children of Fanzara, a village of 320 inhabitants in the mountainous interior of Castellón province in eastern Spain, used to play at staging protests. This was back when residents were mounting frequent demonstrations against a project to install a toxic waste incinerator here. “That experience taught us that when we put our minds to something, we can bring people round,” say Javier López and Rafa Gascó, who led the marches against the waste plant, and have now channeled their energies into a new initiative that has changed the face of this remote community. We never imagined it would reach the point where we’re living in a huge open-air art gallery” The pair have convinced the mainly elderly residents of Fanzara to allow graffiti artists to cover the walls of the village with street art. “We thought that with a bit of luck, one or two urban artists would come and paint a mural, but we never imagined it would reach the point where we’re living in a huge open-air art gallery,” says Javier. Last September, 23 leading Spanish street artists, including names such as Deih, Hombrelópez, Susie Hammer, and Julieta Xlf, descended on Fanzara for four days, leaving behind 44 murals in what they have dubbed the MIAU, or Museo Inacabado de Arte Urbano (Unfinished Museum of Urban Art). “They’re probably not really aware of how important what they’ve done is,” says Belén García, a specialist in street art at the University of Valencia, about the residents of Fanzara. “This is unique, because it comes out of a social movement that has nothing to do with other forms of street art or post-graffiti, as these kind of murals are called. “This is different to what is going on in cities like Valencia, where artists paint in public spaces without permission,” she adds. It is also different to when municipal authorities decide to pay artists to decorate the walls of a run-down area: “This was born out of a residents’ movement and with no funding.” That said, Fanzara’s local council threw itself behind the initiative, contributing €2,000 to the four-day paintfest. The rest of the costs were covered by the artists themselves, who raised money online and by selling merchandising to visitors at the event. Fanzara town hall contacted the Mur-murs street artists collective, which soon found more than 20 people interested in taking part. After the artists had finished, a number of residents asked them to decorate their own houses. Word of the event soon spread internationally through the social networks, and a group of Italian artists traveled to Fanzara, contributing three more works to this ongoing project. “In a couple of years, Fanzara will be known internationally, in fact I think it already is,” says Joan Feliu, an art historian at Jaume I University in Castellón. Belen García says the village is already the subject of study in academic circles. Fanzara is now preparing for a second sitting, which will take place over four days starting on July 16. “And if we run out of walls, we’ll just paint over and start again,” says Javier.

LEGAL CORNER
WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com www.daviessolicitors.com
Q. A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about? A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/ her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words if you are
resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation. Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will. 2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: The new regulation has given much more strength to the testators /testatrix, letting them choose between English or Spanish Law, which is good, but precaution is a must because under the new regulation if nothing is said and you are a resident in Spain automatically the law applicable will be Spanish law which does not permit that spouses leave everything to each other if there are children. To avoid nasty surprises visit your solicitor and ask if you need to change the wording of your will due to the new Regulation of the EU. 650/2012.

Ricci heiress convicted of tax fraud
The heir to the Nina Ricci perfume and fashion fortune has been convicted of tax fraud by a Paris court after hiding millions in an offshore HSBC account. Arlette Ricci, 73, was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to pay a €1 million (£720,000;$1.1m) fine. The court also confiscated two properties worth four million euros (£2.9m;$4.2m). HSBC’s Swiss private banking arm is being investigated after a leak revealed large scale tax fraud. Ms Ricci, who can appeal, was given a two-year suspended sentence on top of her one-year custodial sentence. Her daughter, Margot Vignat, 51, was also convicted and given an eight-month suspended sentence. Ms Ricci was accused of hiding millions of euros from the French authorities to evade tax using an offshore HSBC account. She was ordered by the court to pay millions in back taxes for the period of 2007-2009, with the exact amount to be set at a later date. Ms Ricci was the first of around 50 French nationals to face trial over tax evasion in the HSBC case.
Her prosecution was seen as a test case for the so-called “Swissleaks” scandal. A list of thousands of HSBC’s clients was passed to the French government in 2009 by whistleblower Herve Falciani, a former employee of the bank’s private operation in Switzerland. The bank’s tax-evasion practices were reported in February by the BBC’s Panorama programme and a host of other international media outlets, leading to criminal investigations in the US, France, Belgium and Argentina but not in the UK, where HSBC is based. The UK’s HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) was given the leaked data in 2010 and identified 1,100 people from the list of 7,000 British clients who had not paid their taxes. But almost five years later, only one tax evader has been prosecuted. In February, HSBC Group Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver admitted “unacceptable” practices had taken place at its Swiss arm. Nina Ricci was born Maria Adelaide Nielli in Turin in 1883, before settling in France aged 12 and founding the Nina Ricci business with her son in

The town has all the facilities and service one would expect from a modern small town: shops, banks, post office, restaurants, bars, schools and a 24 hour medical centre. The nearest major hospital is in Huercal Overa, approximately 21km away. Albox has a municipal swimming pool, very typical of inland Spanish towns that don’t have access to beaches. You will find most locals frequenting the pool during the weekends and summer holidays. It opens throughout July and August. There is also a sports centre and tennis club, which also has its own swimming pool. The name derives from the Arabic word for forest and sounds similar to the Spanish term for forest ‘el bosque’. The origens of Albox date back to Medieval times when the ancient fort town was located on a hill nearby to its current location. In 1503 it was completely destroyed by an earthquake and most of its historical buildings were lost. The town was reconstructed from scratch in its current location. Market Town A large market is held every Tuesday morning and a smaller market on Saturday mornings. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. Jamons (cured ham on the bone) can be found hanging from stalls and shop windows; dozens of varieties of queso (cheese), chorizo (cured sausage) and many more delicacies are on show. The market is extensive, with street upon street, a myriad of noise, colour and smells. In fact you can find just about anything in the Albox market. Source: www.spain-holiday.com TRE

Turre was originally a Moorish settlement created after the invading Christian armies of the Catholic Kings expelled the Moors from the nearby village of Mojacar in 1488. It was originally called Turris, after the Latin for "tower", probably because there was a watchtower at the location of the new settlement.

All body scrubs, even ones you buy in the store, contain just three primary ingredients: An Exfoliant: Basically a gritty substance of some sort. Sugar and salt are the most common, and have the benefit that they dissolve in water so they don't leave any mess in your bathtub. Salt is great for relaxing your muscles. Some people prefer to use sea salt, because it is less processed than table salt, contains a wider variety of trace elements and minerals, and is said to be kinder on the skin. Personally I've tried sea salts, table salt, and epsom salts, and found all of them to be fine. Your mileage may vary depending on your skin type (mine is fairly normal, perhaps slightly dry). Whatever salt you use, I'd recommend grinding it finely, i.e. to a similar consistency to table salt, because coarse grains can feel a little too exfoliating. Sugar feels slightly gentler on your skin than salt. You can use either brown or white sugar. I prefer brown, because it smells yummy, especially if you mix it with a little vanilla essential oil.
t op t o t oe
Ground coffee smells divine, and the caffeine may even have some benefits for your skin. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning that it causes blood vessels to constrict, so it can temporarily reduce varicose veins and rosacea. Intriguingly, experiments have shown that caffeine applied to the skin of mice makes them less likely to get skin cancer... but we don't know yet whether this works for humans. Oatmeal is the gentlest of the exfoliants. It is an emollient, meaning that it softens and hydrates your skin. People have used it for decades as an effective home remedy for dry, itchy skin. Unlike salt and sugar, you can use it with a bit of water instead of a carrier oil. Other options include almond meal, flax meal (ground linseeds), rice bran, wheat bran, and ground nut shells. I haven't tried any of these so I can't really comment, though I've heard that ground nut shells can really be quite scratchy against your skin.

Laos part 1
Laos is a landlocked country squeezed between China, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia; it has a small population of about seven million yet it’s almost the same size as the UK. A 50,000 year old skull was found recently; the oldest proof of a modern day human in South East Asia. Proof of an agricultural society dates from over 6000 years ago. 4000 year old bronze tools and iron artefacts dating from 3000 years ago have been found. Laos came together as a nation around the Fourteenth Century when the kingdom had the beautiful name of Million Elephants or Lan Xang. The country expanded to its present borders in the 1600s. King Sourigna Vongsa started with 2 sons, but as intrigue is the norm with royalty; one was executed for adultery, the other fled the country after being caught in bed with his half sister and sentenced to death. The King died in1694 without an heir and the country split into three parts. Thus weakened; the north was invaded by the Burmese and the south by Siam (Thailand). As late as 1874 the Siamese conducted cross border slave hunting raids. A few years later the Chinese bandit army the Black Flags

invaded. In 1893 France rescued King Oun Kham and added Laos to its Indochina protectorate. The three areas were reunited and Laos was safe again. France left Laos relatively untouched using it as a buffer between British occupied Thailand and its own lands. The French did however enact a law making all adult males do 10 days manual labour a year for them. During WWII Laos was occupied in turn by six different countries, briefly after the Chinese left in March 1945 it became independent. Then a month later the Japanese invaded. At the end of the war in 1946 the French reoccupied the country until 1953 when France lost the first Indochina war. With the Geneva peace accord signed in 1954’ Laos was again an independent monarchy and America started to financially support the Royal Lao Army against the communist Pathet Lao guerrillas. President Ho Chi Minh of North Vietnam had agreed in 1954 not to interfere in Laos but secretly aided the Pathet Lao. From 1958; Soviet backed North Vietnam (NVA) conducted secret night time border attacks, then quickly withdraw leaving the Pathet
Lao to control the new territory. This terrified the Royal Laos army and whole units deserted rather than face the ghostly attacks. The NVA then controlled large parts of Laos which they needed to construct the now legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail. This huge project would later enable munitions, fuel, supplies and manpower to travel south from Hanoi once hostilities commenced a few years later. The American Govt department the NSA later called the trail the greatest ever military construction programme of the 20th Century. By 1968 the Royal Laos army had disappeared and the Americans started recruiting the Hmong Tribe as their secret army against the NVA. Trying to destroy the Ho Chi Minh Trail; American planes dropped an average of a bomb load every eight minutes on Laos from 1964-73. That’s nine years at $23 million a day. More bombs were dropped on Laos than were used in the whole of WWII. Since then America has donated $53 million towards bomb clearance. After the Vietnam War finished in
1973 the Hmong tribe helped the CIA defend the Royalist Government. Then in 1975 when the communists took over; the Hmong found themselves attacked in retribution by both the new Laos rulers and the Vietnamese. Hundreds of thousands fled to Thailand to live in refugee camps. In 1989 Laos agreed to repatriate some of them but most refuse to return. Those that have often disappear. Hillary Clinton’s husband when President back in 1995 refused to help the Hmong people as he denied they were being persecuted. His political opponents stated it was a betrayal of a people who had spilt their blood defending American interests. The Republicans forced him to publically acknowledge the huge secret war in 1997. Then 8 long years later; some Hmong were allowed to resettle as political refugees in America.

Malala Yousafzai has asteroid named after her by Nasa scientist inspired by her amazing story Dr Amy Mainzer said she was inspired by the 17-year-old's brave activism An asteroid orbiting between Mars and Jupiter has been named after Malala Yousafzai. The Nasa astronomer who discovered it five years ago said she chose the name to honour the 17-year-old Nobel Prize winner. Dr Amy Mainzer, who works at the space agency’s jet propulsion laboratory in California, said she was inspired by a colleague who pointed out that of the many named asteroids, few honoured the contributions of women and even fewer were from ethnic minorities. An infrared image of the Malala asteroid, which appears red because it is cooler than the hot blue stars An infrared image of the Malala asteroid, which appears red because it is cooler than the hot blue stars “(Dr Carrie Nugent) and I read about Malala's
amazing story and thought that if anyone deserves to have an asteroid named after them, she does,” Dr Mainzer added. Malala, co-recipient of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, was shot in the head in an attempted assassination attempt by the Pakistani Taliban on a school bus in 2012. She was targeted for her campaign against the extremist group’s crackdown on girls’ education, following years of blogging and interviews. beyond and now heads a charity supporting education for girls worldwide. Dr Mainzer said she hoped the asteroid’s name would remind young people that “science and engineering are for everyone". “We desperately need the brainpower of all smart people to solve some of humanity's most difficult problems, and we can't afford to reject half the population's,” she wrote. This Mountain on Mars Is Leaking
nASA rover just completed the first-ever Mars marathon Seasonal flows spotted by HiRISE on northwestern slopes in Hale Crater. (NASA/JPL/University of Arizona) As the midsummer Sun beats down on the southern mountains of Mars, bringing daytime temperatures soaring up to a balmy 25ºC (77ºF), some of their slopes become darkened with long, rusty stains that may be the result of water seeping out from just below the surface. The image above, captured by the HiRISE camera aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on Feb. 20, shows mountain peaks within the 150km (93-mile) -wide Hale Crater. Made from data acquired in visible and near infrared wavelengths the long stains are very evident, running down steep slopes below the rocky cliffs. These dark lines, called recurring slope lineae (RSL) by planetary scientists, are some of the best visual evidence we have of liquid water existing on Mars today – although if RSL are the result of water it’s nothing you’d want to fill your astro-canteen with; based on the first appearances of these features in early Martian spring any water responsible for them would have to be extremely high in salt content. According to HiRISE Principal
Investigator Alfred McEwen “[t]he RSL in Hale have an unusually “reddish” color compared to most RSL, perhaps due to oxidized iron compounds, like rust.” See a full image scan of the region here, and watch an animation of RSL evolution (in another location) over the course of a Martian season here Hale Crater itself is likely no stranger to liquid water. Its geology strongly suggests the presence of water at the time of its formation at least 3.5 billion years ago in the form of subsurface ice (with more potentially supplied by its cosmic progenitor) that was melted en masse at the time of impact. Today carved channels and gullies branch within and around the Hale region, evidence of enormous amounts of water that must have flowed from the site after the crater was created. (Source.) The crater is named after George Ellery Hale, an astronomer from Chicago who determined in 1908 that sunspots are the result of magnetic activity. http://www.universetoday.com/
NASA’s Mars exploration rover Opportunity achieved a major milestone Tuesday, completing a marathon on the Red Planet. It has traveled a distance of 26.219 miles since it landed on Jan. 25, 2004. It may have taken the rover 11 years and two months, but it’s still a major accomplishment. “This is the first time any human enterprise has exceeded the distance of a marathon on the surface of another world,” NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Opportunity project manager John Callas said in a statement. “A first time happens only once.” The rover’s original mission was supposed to last just three months, but it has continued to operate since then leading to many more discoveries. According to NASA, the rover team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory has planned a marathon-length relay run to celebrate the Opportunity’s achievement. http://www.dailydot.com/

Make your second home in Spain pay for itself, or even make you a living
There’s no better feeling than realising the moment when your dream of buying a holiday home becomes a reality. For a few weeks or months each year you might escape there and holiday with family and friends. But for the rest of the year? Chances are it just lies empty, while you still have to cover the costs. Over half of holidaymakers use the internet for information and over 60% book their holiday online*. With the popularity of holiday rentals increasing, many owners are learning that renting out their property makes a substantial contribution towards running costs. The prevalence of holiday rental websites such as HomeAway. co.uk has made it far easier for holiday homeowners to advertise and rent their property to a global audience of holidaymakers. There are a variety of reasons for the increase in recent years of holiday rentals. These are largely
economic factors for both parties in the holiday rental process. The owner may need to rent their holiday home through the year to cover the costs associated with the property. They may also choose to rent their property as a means of earning additional income. For holidaymakers, it is the additional space and privacy a holiday rental offers compared to that of a hotel room. When you factor in the economics of each accommodation type, holiday rentals frequently offer the holidaymaker far better value for money, especially for families and friends who would otherwise require multiple rooms in a hotel. Spanish property prices rise 3.3% in last year Spanish real estate values have risen 3.3% on average in the last year, the latest index reveals. The best-performing area is Navarra, in the Pyrenees region, with an annual increase of 6.7% per square metre, followed by the Balearic Islands at 6.5%, states the Sociedad de Tasación (ST) Residential Real Estate Trends Report for Quarter 2, 2015. However, in eight districts, prices of new and existing homes are still dropping, with the biggest fall, 8.8%, coming in Cantabria and 5.9% in Castilla y Leon, says the property appraisal company. The average price of new and second hand residential properties is €1,316 per square metre, which is €10 less than the first three months of 2015 and 45.2% less than at its 2007 peak of €2,401. ST says the results show that after years of declining the Spanish property market is rising on average. “The analysis of the last one and a half years confirms that prices have reached bottom.” The average full salary needed to buy a property is now 7.7 years, a fall of one-tenth from the previous quarter. In early 2007 it was at 13.7 years. Price rises among medium-quality residences (2.8%) performed better than low-quality properties (1.9%) and high-quality homes (1%). Larger homes saw higher increases, as values of properties with three or more bedrooms increased 4.3% and those with two or less bedrooms fell 1.5%. The market was boosted by rising numbers of transactions and in the construction of new properties, which had been halted in previous years. More than 700 Spanish property experts contribute in the report and many are optimistic about future market performance. The market outlook is also rising and the ST Confidence Index, is at 47.4 points, up 2.9 year-on-year. The low point was in the first
quarter of 2013 at 30.6 points. Most property professionals are optimistic with 53.7 points confident that transactions will rise and 53.4 points saying that the stock situation will improve. * Meanwhile, the number of European passengers travelling to Spain through lowcost airlines has risen 14.4% in the last years.

Around 3.3million travellers used low cost airlines to get in and out of Spain during the first two months of 2015, according to the latest figures from the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Passengers from the UK make up around one-third of the total, while visitors from Italy, Germany, France and the Netherlands also account for significant proportions of those looking to soak up some Spanish sunshine. Traditional (non-budget) airlines saw an increase in passengers of 1.7%. The increase in tourism is also set to benefit the overseas property sector, says Marc Pritchard, of developer Taylor Wimpey España. “Increased tourist spending in Spain’s shops is a win for everyone. It stimulates the economy, promotes employment and serves to bolster the housing market. It should be a very positive summer for Spain this year as tourists save on their flights in order to spend while they are on holiday here.” New routes are helping to fuel the appetite for cheap flights to Spain. Norwegian has just launched three new Spanish routes from the UK’s Birmingham Airport, flying to Madrid, Malaga and Barcelona. Spanish airport operator Aena has revealed that more than one million flights have already been planned to and from Spain in the summer, up 3.6% annually. A record 65 million tourists visited Spain last year, according to the UN World Tourism Organization. http://www.opp.today/

Caixa may sell
Home Sweet Home
Spain’s Caixa Group may sell its 12 percent stake in oil group Repsol SA because it does not consider it strategic to its plans, Caixa Chairman Isidro Faine said in an interview with the Financial Times.
Property Services
The stake sale would simplify the complex web of shareholdings that Caixa Group has accumulated over the years and help transform its controlling shareholder, Caixa bank, into a pure-play retail bank, the FT reported.

In the past, Caixa bank has scouted for takeover targets and it may still be looking out for some, Faine said, because the Spanish banking market will simplify and be reduced to six or seven, from the current 14, the paper said. Caixa has been one of the most powerful shareholders of major Spanish companies, with big stakes in utility Gas Natural Fenosa, infrastructure firm Abertis and Telefonica, in addition to Repsol. Last year, the bank wrote down the value of its stake in Repsol by 184 million euros ($250 million at the time) in anticipation the oil company would reach a compensation deal with Argentina over the seizure of Repsol’s stake in energy producer YPF. viewpoint
The Standoff
Rodriquez was now in control of the Remitroot crop and purposely withholding the product in order to cause discontent in Alqueria thus forcing a general election which he intended to win by foul means or fair. He used a variety of excuses to explain why the product wasn’t being delivered. To justify his actions he produced reams of elaborate horticultural statistics backed up by supposedly sound metrological data. He didn’t need to employ this subterfuge however, simply by running the plant to the best of his ability would guarantee a shortage and eventually the total collapse of the entire Remitroot industry. Under his careful management the plant was already in decline. Poyato, the previous owner had a ‘duty of care’ to his workforce. Rodriguez’s duty of care was to his wallet and he cut more corners than an Formula One driver. Manuela now had to act and the Remitroot enterprise was duly nationalised under the trade-name of AlquiRoot, with an advertising jingle of: ‘AlquiRoot for her, AlquiRoot for he, AlquiRoot for dinner, AlquiRoot for tea, AlquiRoot, AlquiRoot, teeheehee’. Unfortunately Rodriquez refused to give up the plant and as the Alquerian establishment employed only one policeman, José Cabrasilbido who could be terrorised by a balloon on a stick a standoff ensued. Manuela then went for Rodriquez’s metaphoric jugular and banned Abyssinian Goat Shirling. A sport Rodriquez loved above all else and which had already been
banned in practically e v e r y civilised c o u n t r y. He was so passionate about the sport he once tried to swap his wife’s favours for ten minutes at the Shirling pit. His wife didn’t complain about the potential deal but the third party demanded cash after meeting her. Who would break first, Rodriquez denied his beloved Abyssinian Goat Shirling or the people of Alqueria without their Remitroot? The lack of Remitroot was taking a toll, people, young and old staggered in the streets, wide-eyed, sober and desolate. Manuela herself was irritable and edgy. Without their daily intake of ‘Remitroot the aphrodisiac’ her men-friends had taken up the delights of stamp collecting and folk dancing instead of delighting Manuela. Rodriguez couldn’t contemplate a life without Goat Shirling. He looked for other venues but apart from a remote village in the Ibebuggar Gorge of southern KwaKnutshurt there were none. Rodriquez reluctantly admitted defeat and gave control of the Remitroot crop back to Poyato. With Poyato once more at the helm Remitroot soon flowed freely into the streets and veins of Alqueria and its singular population.
Special Circumstances The situation was fraught. Pete had been loaded into the back of the ambulance. The doctor fixed me with an emphatic eye, and an even more emphatic moustache. ‘You must follow close behind the ambulance. I need you at the hospital when we arrive. They will not admit your husband unless he has someone with him who can speak Spanish.’ I nodded. The situation was not new to me. The ambulance screamed off, orange lights blazing, with Henry the car following in its wake like a tender to a yacht. We circumnavigated the roundabouts at Arboleas on two wheels, and then settled into a relaxed 100k per hour. As we passed through Los Carasoles, with its irritating flashing lights and 60k speed limit, I thought ‘All I need now is to be stopped by the police.’ To think is to act. The man in green stepped into the road, hand raised. Henry came to a halt within inches of his toes. I rolled down the window ‘I’m following that ambulance. My husband is in the ambulance, and we are going to the hospital.’ I explained as the ambulance disappeared into the distance. ‘You were speeding.’ Came the laconic reply. ‘I know.’ I admitted, repeating the previous explanation, and added a few graphic details to drive the gravity of the situation home to him. By now Guardia #2 and #3 had joined us. I explained all over again, but my tale of woe was listened to with not a flicker of sympathy. ‘You could have caused an
By Jos Biggs
josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk accident. You were driving over the speed limit. It’s dangerous.’ they separately added. I considered pointing out that if there was an accident, the ambulance would almost certainly have been the one to cause it, but instead I decided on pathos. ‘I really need to get to the hospital, the doctor told me I had to follow the ambulance closely. He said I had to be with him when he arrives.’ I wasted my breath. I took my ticket and departed with as much speed as the Law would allow. I can appeal, but it’s a lost cause. Special circumstances will cut no ice with the three Officers of the Law, who will point out that I do not deny doing 101k in a 60k area, adding that they can’t remember an ambulance, and in any case they didn’t understand what I was telling them. But they did understand. I know they did.

facts about asparagus
• Asparagus is a member of the Lily family. • Asparagus spears grow from a crown that is planted about a foot deep in sandy soils. • Under ideal conditions, an asparagus spear can grow 10" in a 24-hour period. • Each crown will send spears up for about 6-7 weeks during the spring and early summer. • The outdoor temperature determines how much time will be between each picking...early in the season, there may be 4-5 days between pickings and as the days and nights get warmer, a particular field may have to be picked every 24 hours. • After harvesting is done the spears grow into ferns, which produce red berries and the food and nutrients necessary for a
healthy and productive crop the next season. • An asparagus planting is usually not harvested for the first 3 years after the crowns are planted allowing the crown to develop a strong fibrous root system. • A well cared for asparagus planting will generally produce for about 15 years without being replanted. • The larger the diameter, the better the quality! • Asparagus is a nutrient-dense food which in high in Folic Acid and is a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin. • Asparagus has No Fat, contains No Cholesterol and is low in Sodium.

THE 2015 CAR RALLY IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!
Yes, it’s nearly time for Cabrera’s annual fun-packed romp through the Andalucian countryside! No handbrake turns and screeching tyres on this rally though - instead it’s a delightful ramble to places you didn’t know existed, enjoying the scenery and solving a few clues along the way. And the competition isn’t so fierce that you won’t be stopping off at a bar or two for some coffee - or similar livener. The date for your diary is Saturday 2nd May, when you’ll be leaving the Arch from 10.00 am for this 100 kilometre voyage of discovery. And the fun doesn’t stop when you return, flushed with success to Cabrera! The finish line is at The Ranch, where participants and spectators will all enjoy a delightful extended alfresco buffet lunch. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, and there will be a chance for everybody to try their skill - and luck - at horseshoe throwing. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to enjoy a special day with your friends! To book your place on the rally, call Robert Uzzell on 950 982 555, or email him at robertuzzell@hotmail.co.uk quoting the number of people in your car and your preferred start time. If you just want to join us for the lunch, which starts at 2.00 pm, contact Robert in the same way - but be sure to book early as places are limited and the lunch has proved very popular in past years. It will also be possible to book using the form that will be put up in the Post Room. The cost for both the rally and the lunch is 15€; if it’s just the lunch you want, it’s 10€. This year’s rally will be raising funds for the Cabrera Fiesta.

My personal favourite is Shrimp, a cute little Welsh Cardigan corgi who nearly didn’t make it. He was the runt of a litter of eight, bitten by one of his brothers and pushed aside when it was feeding time, weak and listless. Thanks to nine year old Emily, a couple of butterfly clips and Emily’s caring mother not to mention a puppy formula from the vet’s and before long Shrimp was thriving even though Emily treated him like her little dolly: “He suffered Emily dressing him in baby clothes, wheeling around in a pram, because she always rewarded him with a biscuit when he lay there patiently.” She taught him tricks and delighted in him doing his tricks for her parents. Her father thought him cute and his intuition told him that there was more to Shrimp than meets the eye. “I can’t get over how he seems to understand everything we say. I almost think sometimes he is going to answer us.” And yes, you’ve guessed it! “Shrimp was a magical little dog.” If he wanted to, he could talk. He developed an adventurous nature, tootling off on his own, slipping in and out of buses and venturing into town in search of a bit of excitement. pause for thought
Well here I am in Bagamoyo (just outside Dar-Es Salaam, for the unaware, in Tanzania, on the East Coast of Africa), being woken up at Sunrise every morning by a 200 decibel rendition of the Adhan or ‘Call to Prayer’ from the adjacent Mosque. We Christians, especially after being so rudely awakened, sometimes scorn or criticise this Adhan, but I’d suggest we’d do well to consider its meaning. For, accepting that ‘Allah’ is the Arabic equivalent of the Hebrew word ‘Abba’, meaning ‘Daddy’, which Jesus used in reference to our Heavenly Father, then there’s actually only one phrase in this ‘call’ which I might question; for translated into English the eight phrases of the Adhan, repeated from the Mosque five times per day, are:- “Allah is the greatest; there is no God but Allah; Mohammed is his messenger; Hasten to worship; Hasten to success; Prayer is better than sleep; Allah is the greatest; There is no God but Allah”. OK, we may well question reference to Mohammed, though we can’t emphatically be sure that he wasn’t a messenger of God to some. And we might with some justification wish to
add a phrase regarding the way in which God revealed Himself to us through Jesus rather than Mohammed, so that a Christian version of this call might read “God is the greatest; There is no other God but Him; He revealed Himself to us in Jesus, who gave His life in our place; Hurry now to worship; to gain a life at peace with Him; for Prayer is better than sleep; God is the greatest; There is no other God but Him.” Can we disagree with this? Could we be prepared to commit ourselves, as Muslims the World over do, to come to God in prayer and Worship five times every day? Is prayer more valuable than sleep? If so, then what a great lesson Islam has to teach us, and how much we could gain from using this call to awaken ourselves and join in regular worship of our God.Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch. org. Hamilton denies ‘backing up’
Lewis Hamilton has rejected claims from Nico Rosberg that he tried to compromise his Mercedes’ team-mate during the Chinese Grand Prix. The German felt race winner Hamilton was driving unnecessarily slowly, backing him up into the chasing Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel. Rosberg said it was “frustrating” and put them under “unnecessary pressure”. Hamilton responded to the accusation he had done it on purpose by saying: “That’s absolutely not the case.” He added: “I wasn’t trying to back him up into Sebastian because ultimately we do need a one-two and that is a priority to the team. If he wanted to
get close to overtake he could have done. I’m not really quite sure what his problem is. “We came here to get one-two and we did. There shouldn’t be too much aggro really.” But Rosberg, who finished second ahead of Vettel, said the two would discuss it with the team after the race. “Of course we will have a discussion and we will see how it goes,” Rosberg added. It is the latest in a series of flash points that have tested the relationship between the two drivers, especially since the team became the sport’s pacesetters at the start of last year, including a crash at last August’s Belgian Grand Prix. Rosberg’s concern in Shanghai was that by bringing Vettel closer than he needed to be, it made Mercedes vulnerable to an attempt by Ferrari to either pass

Rosberg by stopping first and benefitting from fresh tyres - called undercutting - or by forcing Rosberg to do a longer final stint than his tyres could cope with. Vettel did make an earlier than scheduled final stop, but Mercedes were able to handle it. Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff claimed the drivers had cleared the air in their post-race debrief. “It was a good debrief because it was a positive debrief,” said Wolff. “There wasn’t any animosity. “There wasn’t any intention from Lewis to slow Nico down in order to make him finish third or worse, 100%. “He didn’t know the gaps behind Nico. What he knew was that he had to take that tyre longer than we had ever run it the whole weekend. This is why he decided to slow down in the way he did.” Bbc.co.uk
19th Hole Golf Society - Cucador On Thursday 9th April we returned to Aguilon to play this Monthly Medal competition. With a wind biting to the very core and temperatures more like the Scandinavian countries (why do all the Scandinavians come here to play golf in the cold and rain?) it was always going to be a difficult day. Not so of course for the winners who seemed to ignore the conditions and play good solid golf. Dave Sharp MBE easily won the Mens Medal playing off the Yellow Tees, without the inconvenience of the slope, returning an impressive nett 73. Chrissie Dow had a comfortable win with an even more impressive nett 72 to take the Ladies Medal. Dave also picked up a Nearest the Pin on the 8th. Mike Esposito claimed a brace of Nearest the Pins whilst Don Harbron scored the only Two of the day on the tricky 14th.
Mens Medal - 1st Dave Sharp MBE nett 73 (5), 2nd Terry Caddick nett 76 (18), 3rd John Fryatt nett 79 (17). Ladies Medal - 1st Christine Dow Nett 72 (34). Two’s - 14th Don Harbron. Almería put an end to an eightgame run without a win in the Liga BBVA by beating Granada 3-0. UD Almería saw off Granada CF with a 3-0 victory on matchday 31 of the Liga BBVA, a result which came thanks to a Thomas brace and another goal from Javier Espinosa, who was extremely lively throughout the encounter. The two sides, both in desperate need of points, met in the Almería ground looking for a way of moving closer towards safety in the division. The home team grew in confidence as the game unfolded and quickly started to look dangerous. Mauro dos Santos, Javier Espinosa and Wellington Silva all threatened on goal before Thomas Partey put the Sergi Barjuan-led outfit in front. Things went even better for Almería at the beginning of the second half, with Espinosa putting his stamp on the game even further with a second goal on the hour mark. From then on, Granada had no recourse and their opponents’ counter-attacks started to stretch them until a slightly fortunate Thomas managed to widen the gap to 3-0. The result puts an end to Almería’s eight-match run without a single win and gives them hope in their quest for safety. lfp.es
