Doctors Hail 'Spectacular' Cancer Breakthrough
Immunotherapy, which uses the body's immune system to attack cancerous cells, could herald a "new era" for cancer treatment. The results of new cancer drugs trials have been hailed as spectacular, with one expert claiming the potential for a cure for the disease is "definitely there". Immunotherapy, which uses the body's immune system to attack cancerous cells, proved so effective that in one British-led trial, more than half of patients with advanced melanoma saw tumours shrink or brought under control, according to researchers. The trials, a number of which have been presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual conference in Chicago, could herald a "new era" for cancer treatments. Professor Roy Herbst, chief of medical oncology at Yale Cancer Centre, described some of the findings as "spectacular", and said immunotherapy could replace chemotherapy as the standard cancer treatment within the next five years, according to reports. He told reporters: "I think we are seeing a paradigm shift in the way oncology is being treated. "The potential for long-term survival, effective cure, is definitely there."

Professor Peter Johnson, director of medical oncology at Cancer Research UK, said: "The evidence suggests we are at the beginning of a whole new era for cancer treatments." An international trial involving 945 patients with advanced melanoma saw them treated with two drugs - ipilimumab and nivolumab. Researchers found the treatments stopped cancer advancing for almost a year in 58% of cases, with tumours stable or shrinking for an average of 11.5 months. This compared to 19% of cases for just ipilimumab, with tumours stable or shrinking for an average of 2.5 months, according to the research, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr Alan Worsley, Cancer Research UK's senior science information officer, said the findings suggest combining immunotherapy treatments could hit advanced melanoma with a "powerful one-two punch". He said: "Together these drugs could release the brakes on the immune system while blocking cancer's ability to hide from it." However, Dr Worsley did sound a note of caution. He said: "But combining these treatments also increases the likelihood of potentially quite severe side effects. "Identifying which patients are most likely to benefit will be key to bringing our best weapons to bear against the disease."

The events will take place on June 8, 10, 12 and 14 for two hours each morning and two hours each afternoon across the country The strikes mirror the 2010 stoppages which left 600,000 tourists stranded The union is now protesting the penalties given to those controllers Britons travelling abroad to Spain for a sunny break should prepare for considerable disruption in June as Spanish air traffic controllers have called partial strikes over four days. The stoppages have been organised by the USCA controllers’ labors union in dispute over fines and suspensions given by airport operator AENA to 61 controllers for a walkout that happened in 2010. Control workers will strike on June 8, 10, 12 and 14 between 10am and 12pm and 6pm and 8pm across the country, the union worker confirmed. The action will begin as Spain starts its summer tourism season and threatens to disrupt an industry that accounts for over 10 percent of economic output. Travel companies and airlines who will be affected by the strikes are hoping there will be as little disruption as possible for travellers during the strikes. A spokesperson for budget airline, easyJet said: ‘easyJet has been advised of planned industrial strike action by Spanish Air Traffic Control services on 8, 10, 12 and 14 June for two hours each morning and two hours each afternoon.

Swarm of 30,000 bees forces city-centre street closure
A SWARM of over 30,000 bees which entered a parked car in the northern city of León forced Local Police to close an entire street for three hours yesterday (Saturday). Pedestrians were diverted until gone 20.00hrs, and drivers were flagged down upon entering the central C/ Padre Adintero and warned to keep their windows closed. The queen bee escaped from her hive and flew into a vehicle by the roadside at around 15.30, and the rest of the worker bees followed her, squeezing in through the bonnet. They were not discovered until around 17.00hrs, when a 'green patrol' of the Local Police was sent out to deal with the swarm. Officers called the bee-keeper, but he did not reach the scene for another two hours, during which the street was closed to walkers and car drivers advised to proceed with caution. The bee-keeper, in full protective uniform and gloves, 'smoked' the creatures out of the car into a cardboard box with a honeycomb inside it. It took at least an hour for him to remove them all and take them back to their hive. This is the second incident in as many
weeks in the northern region of Castilla y León involving escaped bees. An 85-year-old man out for a walk near the village of Serradilla del Arroyo (Salamanca province) was attacked by over 700 bees on Sunday, May 17. He threw himself into the stream that gives the village its name to cool off, and was taken to hospital where it took nurses over an hour and a half to remove all the stings. Julián Perancho Sánchez's daughter Balbina says she 'does not know how he survived', and reported that his face and body were so disfigured none of the local people who went to his aid recognised him. Last-known reports on his condition said he was 'recovering well', and it is believed he is now getting over his ordeal. Three Brits have won prizes in the world's biggest photography awards Three amateur British photographers have been named winners in the Sony World Photography Awards. Stephanie Anjo, who is just 14 from Guilford in Surrey, has won the Youth Portraiture

The winning photographs were chosen from a record 177, 444 submissions from photographers around the world.

Bronze statue of lovers embracing at St Pancras station is a lesson in 'how not to do' public art A 30ft bronze statue of lovers embracing at St Pancras International railway station is a lesson in “how not to do” public art, a senior Royal Academy of Arts figure has claimed. Tim Marlow was speaking as he unveiled a new, temporary installation at the London Eurostar
terminal – a clock which will hang above the controversial lovers statue. “Good public sculpture should seem effortless,” Mr Marlow said. “What you have here are two object lessons: one in how to do it, and the other how not to do it.” The clock unveiled by Mr Marlow, the director of artistic programmes at the RA, will be in place for six months. Created by artist Cornelia Parker, and entitled One More Time, it is a working replica of the station’s clock with the colours reversed – a black face with white hands. Mr Marlow described the nearby lovers statue, The Meeting Place, as “terrible”. “How not to do it – and with respect to the artist it’s a bad commission – is the sculpture of the two lovers,” he said. “It’s a terrible, schmaltzy, sentimental piece of kitsch.” The statue has faced brickbats ever since it was unveiled in 2007 following a major renovation of the station. Writer Will Self described it as “crappily kitsch” while Turner Prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller called it “barely a work of art”. And another critic recently called the statue “fatuous” adding it was “idiotic in scale, devoid of artistic life” and called for it to be

Brit tourist dies after falling from fifth-floor balcony in Ibiza
A British tourist has died after reportedly plunging from a hotel balcony in the party resort of San Antonio in Ibiza. The 26-year-old was said to have been found at around 11.30pm on Saturday night after paramedics were alerted, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene. It is thought the man was staying on the fifth floor of the two-star Piscis Park Hotel when the tragedy occurred. An investigation was underway last night to determine the official cause of death, although sources said they believed he had fallen from a balcony at the hotel, which overlooks San Antonio bay. The tragedy is the first of its kind involving a British holidaymaker in San Antonio so far this year. On May 15 a British tourist died after falling down some stairs inside a bar in Magaluf, on the neighbouring island of Majorca. Ian Frankland, 36, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, plunged nearly 20 feet down the flight of stairs inside Mulligan’s on the resort’s Punta Ballena strip. On May 2 a British man died in the same Majorcan resort after falling from a 13th floor balcony.
He was later named as expat Robert Fielding, 58, who lived on the island with his wife and child. Police said at the time they were treating his death as suicide. Last year a British tourist posted a video on Facebook of a friend risking his life and injury to others by jumping from the roof of the Piscis Park Hotel into its swimming pool - a practice known locally as “balconing” which local authorities are trying to stamp out with fines. He is thought to have done it for a tenner as part of a dare. Piscis Park Hotel could not be contacted today for comment. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Ibiza. We are providing consular assistance to the family at this sad time.” mirror.co.uk

A few simple tricks for surviving those sweaty summer nights – no air con required
Ciudad Real, central Spain, July 17, 11pm: outside it’s 32.8ºC, according to the AEMET Spanish state meteorological agency. At that temperature the bed sheets cling, pajamas are too heavy, and cool air is notable by its absence. It’s impossible to sleep. Your first reaction is to turn on the air con, if you have it. But often it’s not worth the cost to have it running the whole night, so you decide to turn it off again. But is it possible to sleep coolly in the Spanish summer without air conditioning? Tradition says yes. Ancient Egyptians used to moisten their bedclothes to sleep better and combat heat waves, which pose a serious risk to public health. According to the results of a scientific study carried out by the Spanish National Research Council, mortality rates for those aged over 75 increase 20.1 percent for each degree that the maximum daily temperature rises above 36ºC. Direct a fan towards the windows to prevent the heat coming through Our ancestors have passed down to us a long legacy of tricks for staying cool. You can sleep under cotton sheets, for example, which aid perspiration. At the same time you can also put your sheets in the fridge or freezer inside a plastic bag for a few minutes before sleeping – they won’t stay cool the whole night, but it will be long enough for you to fall asleep – or fill a hot water bottle with cold water to cool down your bed. Here are a few more suggestions. 1. Be creative. Come up with methods to stop hot air from entering the room. For instance, point a fan toward the windows, or place a bowl full of ice or very cold water in front of the fan to cool the air further. A damp sheet placed over the window also helps. 2. Wear light pajamas. That’s the advice from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), though you can also sleep naked if you like. It’s a question of preference. According to a study by the Association of American Cotton Producers Cotton USA carried out in the UK, 57 percent of people who sleep naked are happier in their relationship with their partner. 3. Apply compresses dipped in lukewarm water on parts of the body most sensitive to heat, such as the neck, elbows, ankles and the backs of the knees. The contact with cool water has a refrigerating effect that triggers a narrowing of the blood vessels, heating up the skin. In turn, the heat cools you down as a result of the difference in the surrounding temperature, explains the CDC. Turn off all lights and electronic gadgets completely. Putting them on standby is not enough: they go on using energy and giving off heat, according to the International Energy Agency – between five and 10 percent of what they would use when switched on. Also: replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent ones, which produce the same amount of light but use a fifth of the energy and give off less heat, according to the emergencies center in Arlington, Virginia. Lastly, if you are able to sleep out in the open air, do so. Set up a camp on the roof or head out into the country to sleep close to a place next to water (the moisture in the air has a cooling effect), turning a night of stifling heat into one of adventure.

MOJACAR TOURISM PROMOTED IN BILBAO
Mojácar Town Council was represented at the “Expovacaciones” Tourism Fair held in Bilbao from the 8th to the 10thof May. Experienced representatives from Mojácar Tourist Office have given out information to visitors from the stand of the provincial Tourism Service of Almería, in conjunction with the region of Andalucía. This year the tourism fair in Bilbao had a record 357 stands to promote the diversity the region offers. According to data collected by the Tourist Office, Mojácar is already an established destination for people from the Basque Country. The key motivations to visit are the climate, the beaches, the old town and the high quality of the hotels. Of the visitors to the tourist offices of Mojácar, travellers from the Basque Country accounted for 10% of the
total number. It is worth noting that this group of visitors generally tend to stay longer, given the distance to their region of origin. Although the presence of Basque citizens is higher in the summer, they also come to the Mojácar for bank holiday weekends and during the spring and autumn. Bilbao itself has a population of 350,000 people, expanding to 900,000 in its outlying metropolitan area. The presence at this fair is part of the Mojácar Council´s Tourism Program for 2015 which also includes representation at fairs such as FITUR in Madrid as well as in Berlin, Dublin and Barcelona. During May, Mojácar will continue with promotions aimed at tour operators in 12 different major Spanish cities.

La Alfoquia is a town within the municipality of Zurgena with a mix of nationalities enjoying the traditions and customs of this locality. The town is made up of around a thousand inhabitants, situated o¬n the left bank of the Almanzora River. By the various studies and consultations carried out to diverse levels, it can be affirmed that the Arabian word, FOQUIA (AL, would be the article) signifies something that is higher than something else. “The High o¬ne”, “The High Thing”, “The Upper Thing”, but in reference to another lower... thing! Because of it, it is thought that the Arabs that inhabited the nucleus of Zurgena, when they crossed the river, they distinguished among the lower part of the plantation plots named Tamarchete and the o¬ne that was above them, Alfoquia. The beginnings of the urban area of Alfoquia was limited, in its origins, to diverse farmhouses disseminated along the “Pago de Alfoquia”, of where took its name. When the Lorca-Baza railroad was inaugurated in 1894, some constructions for storage of the products were initiated that arrived or left for the railroad. This meant that the workers and their families needed housing and so the population actually grew from workers from many different places. The growth occurred slowly but surely over 60 years giving it a cosmopolitan population from the start. Without doubt, La Alfoquia owes its true origin to the railroad, in fact during almost all of the 20th Century, the town was known as The Station
and was o¬nly given that of Alfoquia in the official media of the Town Hall of Zurgena. The so named “House or Store of the Aunt Magdalene” was o¬ne of the symbolic buildings of La Alfoquia until May 30th, 1997 when the machines, due to their poor state, put an end to it. The house was a witness to all kinds of activities: Dwelling, goods Depot for wheat, Christmas celebrations, anniversaries, weddings, etc. Since the establishment of the railroad, La Alfoquia supplied itself with water by installing tubing descending from Tijola. In July 18th of 1963, during the times of Franco, the building of the pipeline was started, the only fault that the system had was that the water came from sand banks in the Almanzora. Being of very bad quality, drinking water was limited to that brought to the town by R.E.N.F.E. (Spanish Rail).Three taps were installed in different parts of the town to provide water for public general use, soon after, groups of and individual neighbours begun to tap into the water supply, redirecting the water to their homes. In La Alfoquia there have been two grain mills, o¬ne used to obtain food for people and the other for their animals. o¬ne moved by the water of the stream of Tamarchete, the other, with electric current, situated in the center of the town. Al ‘Scarface’ Capone
Alphonse ‘Al’ Capone was born in 1899 into a respectable Italian family in Brooklyn; one of nine children he left school at 14 after hitting a teacher in the face. He first worked in a bowling alley where he met Johnny Torrio a gangster who recruited him to his James Street Boys gang. Torrio mentored Al; teaching him to always project a smart and respectable image. He got the nickname Scarface after he’d insulted a woman and her brother Frank Gallucio had attacked him with a knife. Torrio ordered Capone to apologise to the family and later Capone employed Frank as his bodyguard. At 19 Capone married an Irish Catholic Mae Coughlin; then under 21 his parents had to give their permission. Johnny Torrio had left for Chicago to run a brothel business for his boss Big Jim Colosimo. In 1919 shortly after marrying, Capone also moved to Chicago to assist Torrio. Big Jim was soon killed (allegedly by Capone), with Johnny taking over. Prohibition started in 1920 giving new opportunities for Capone and his boss. Chicago, on the edge of Lake Michigan (and Canadian border) made it easy to import Canadian whiskey. Only a day’s drive away are New York and Atlantic City so Rum and Scotch whisky were smuggled in. Two of Al’s brothers worked for him, Ralph ran his beer brewing and bottling business, Frank was sharp suited like Al with a reputation for violence and was his enforcer. The renewal of EU driving licenses requires the holder to undergo psychometric aptitude tests and be legally resident in Spain. WHO NEEDS TO RENEW? The latest EU Directive 2006/126/CE states that holders of EU driving licenses that have expired or are about to expire need to renew their license. Holders of EU driving licenses that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years for Group 1 (AM, A1, A2, A, B & BE) or valid for 5 years or more for Group 2 (BTP, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE) need to renew their license providing they have been legally resident in Spain for 2 years since 19th January 2013. TWO EXAMPLES EU license holders that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years, who are legally resident in Spain before or up to 19th January 2013, should renew their driving license from 19th January 2015. EU license holders that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years, who are legally resident in Spain since 6th June 2014, should renew their driving license from 6th June 2016. agent, In 1923 the new mayor of Chicago started to clean up the city; Torrio sent Al and his brother Frank to a suburb called Cicero were they infiltrated the Republican run council putting the leader Klenha and others on the mob payroll, then it was easy to transfer brothels, gambling dens and speakeasies to the area. Al appointed Frank as council liaison, so when in 1924 the Democrats tried to win local elections Frank had men armed with machine guns and shotguns at polling booths to ensure locals ‘voted right.’ In response Chicago Police sent plain clothes reinforcements. Al and Frank mistook the policemen as rival gang members and a shootout ensued leaving Frank dead. Al was heartbroken at the loss of his brother and retaliated by kidnapping officials killing one of them and stealing ballot boxes ensuring Klenha won again. Torrio retired and returned to Italy after a failed assassination attempt; leaving the business to Capone. By this time even the new Mayor of Chicago was being bribed and Capone’s businesses were turning over a $100 million a year. Capone courted the press and was often photographed at restaurants and the opera. He was a philanthropist too setting up soup kitchens during the Great Depression
and gave lots of money to charity. Once after a failed attempt on his life had resulted in the injury of a mother and son, he paid their hospital bills. Strangely the police never had enough evidence to convict Capone on any charges. He used cash for everything to avoid a paper trail but after buying and renovating a mansion in Florida the government used that as evidence to jail him for 9 years in 1931 for tax evasion. Capone almost got away with it but his plan to bribe the jury was discovered and the jurors were switched at the last moment. Capone bought special privileges whilst inside at first but then got transferred to a new prison - Alcatraz. Here he couldn’t communicate with his gang and with prohibition ending in 1935 business dried up. Capone suffered from syphilis and was released in 1939 to Florida a very sick man. The disease attacked his brain leaving him with a mental age of a child. He died quietly at home surrounded by family in 1947 aged just 48!

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN!!!
Now is the time to get ready for the rush of summer visitors that put money in your bank to help pay for the up keep of your holiday homes! So many people do not understand if they rent their properties out they need to keep it in good order – yes that may mean painting, gardening, replacing kitchen equipment, linen, towels, furniture, sofas that are tired or uncomfortable and not forgetting the sagging mattresses. You have to view this project of yours as a business. Take a good look at your property and say “Would I want to pay good money, my hard earned holiday money for this place?” Take into consideration that there are hundreds of properties to rent. This is your chance to impress your guests and get repeat bookings. So if your property is not up to the right standard, DO something about it!! One of the most common complaints that we hear all the time in the shop is that holiday clients have a bad back or can´t sleep because of a lumpy, sagging mattress. Your holiday clients are here to relax, so if the bed frame squeaks please change it! No-one wants the Out Laws or kids knowing what is occurring in the bedroom (which is part of a holiday, relaxed and away from the worries of home) don´t forget the teenagers who find it all very gross – so no street cred there then!! The next common complaint is that there is not enough patio furniture to enjoy the outdoor life in the sun (which is one of the main reasons they are in Spain after all). Ideally your guests would like a quality patio set, outdoor dining table and chairs, comfortable seating and the all important parasol to offer a little shade from the sun. And if you have advertised that your holiday home is for 6 people, then guests
rightly expect that there will be a sun lounger for each person to while away the hours around the pool. So, you have sorted out the mattresses, beds and outdoor areas. Now it is time to look at your sofas. Do they need replacing or do they need a good clean? Even if you can´t afford replace the sofas then make sure that they are clean. Most sofas have removable covers that can be washed, so put in the machine at your lowest temperature and spin. Take out of machine and put back the fillings and dry on terrace. Doing it this way it is easier to put the fillings back in the damp covers as the material is more pliable and best part is no ironing required. For the base of the sofas use a little washing up liquid in warm water and sponge down the bases Finally sponge down again with clear, warm water. Leave doors and windows open to dry, or if you can take the sofa outside to dry. Job done. Feeling proud of yourselves now? We are not finished yet! Here are a few more hints to make your property stand out
from the crowd. • do the curtains need washing? If so have a Spring clean! • No curtains? Get some, as bare windows make the place look unfinished. • Do the sofas need a bit of colour with some cushions? Buy some. • Get a few pictures or mirrors on the walls to add interest. • If throws or bedspreads seen better days, brighten then up with a wash. Or if you have the budget, invest in some new ones. • Give your property a friendly, homely feel which gives a welcome “glad you are here” to your clients. Remember every client has access to a very large network of potential NEW clients for you for this year and following years? If you don’t invest in your holiday property, then you have just missed an opportunity for your best form of advertising. - word of mouth! So friends, family, probably two lots of work colleagues, chats with other Mum’s at the school gates and other social events.
Ouch! That hurts your bank balance. If you have a good rental agent they will tell you when things need to be replaced. Keeping properties in good order means they can get more rentals every year for you. Listen to your agent, they know your competition and they will be able to advise you on how to maximise your letting potential and compete with other rental homes in the area. After all, they don’t want complaints that are going to affect their reputation! Let’s face it, if you keep your property up to standard , when you stay in it yourselves you will also have a better holiday as you will be comfortable and will want come to Spain more often for your breaks. It might sound like a lot of work, but if you want to maximise your rental income then it has to be done. But the good news is that if you keep things up to date and fit out your holiday home properly, the list of jobs is never as big. Enjoy your property in the sun with the good life of Spain as well. Home Mortgages Rose 19.7% in March The number of new mortgages constituted on homes listed in the property registers reached a total of 19,806 in March, which represents a 19.7% increase over the same month in 2014, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute earlier this week, relating to transactions carried out in previous months. With March’s year-on-year increase, home mortgages in Spain accumulated ten consecutive months of double digit increases. However, the increase registered in March is almost ten points less than that recorded in February, when the signing of new mortgages on homes rose by 29.2%. The average value of the mortgages constituted on homes reached 101,989 euros in the third month of the year, representing a rise of 0.3% over the same month of 2014, while the capital loaned for these mortgages increased by 20.1% yearon-year, to over 2,019 million euros. Month-on-month (March over February), the number of home mortgages fell by 7%, compared to an increase of 0.4% recorded a year earlier, while the capital loaned decreased by 13.4%, in contrast with the monthly decline of 1.1% recorded in March 2014. Europa Press reported that, in the first quarter of the year, the signing of new mortgages on homes accumulated an increase of 22.9% over the same period of 2014, with
increases of 27.4% in the capital loaned, and 3.7% in the average mortgage value. The regions which recorded the greatest number of mortgages constituted on housing in March were Madrid (3,794), Andalucía (3,397) and Catalonia (3,229), while the regions which registered the highest year-on-year increases in home mortgages were Cantabria (+78.9%), Navarra (+64.8%) and Madrid (+38.6%). Moreover, the regions where most capital was loaned for the constitution of home mortgages were Madrid (517.9 million euros), Catalonia (377.4 million) and Andalucía (291.5 million euros). Month-on-month, the regions where the number of new mortgages on homes increased most were Navarra (+47.5%), the Canary Islands (+34.8%) and Cantabria (+14.9%), while the largest decreases were registered in the Basque Country (-37%) and Andalucía (-15.7%). keyero.com

Spanish Government Approves New PIVE Plan
The Spanish Government’s Council of Ministers last week approved a Royal Decree renewing the Efficient Vehicle Incentive Programme, PIVE 8 Plan, following the success of the previous versions of the plan, and the resulting positive effect on the Spanish economy and the environment. The new plan, which is the last of the series, has a provision of 225 million euros.

Spanish property market recovery fastest in the Balearic Islands
The Spanish Balearic Islands, which reported some of the lowest house price falls in Spain during the six year economic downturn, is now experiencing the fastest and highest rises in the country. The strong property market is being supported by a healthy tourism sector and a multi-national house buying population, according to Alejandra Vanoli, managing director of Mallorca Sotheby’s International Realty. She pointed out that Calvia alone has 19,000 non-Spanish residents from 100 different countries and this year the firm is selling more houses than ever. In Ibiza it is a similar story. According to Glynn Evans, the firm’s managing director in Ibiza the international buyers are attracted by exciting culinary business ventures from multi-Michelin starred chefs, supercar and powerboat championships, 70 metre plus berths for the finest private mega yachts and several new five star hotels. On top of this, at the end of April, the Bank of Spain confidently declared an end to the property crisis. José Luis Malo de Molina, said that ‘the adjustment in the housing sector, in principle, is complete’ and ‘the process of price adjustment, in principle, has already bottomed out’. The mortgage market is also well into recovery. Data from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics show that property loans in the Balearics, for example, were up 36.2% in February 2015 over the previous year, above the national average

Average rents increased by 0.2% in April, compared to the previous month, to €6.98 per square meter per month, according to the data from property portal Fotocasa, and year on year they increased by 1%. ‘In the last few months we have gone from registering widespread declines in home rental prices, to registering increases in every region except one. Rental prices, therefore, are starting to increase in most of the country,’ the Fotocasa report said. But rents are still down 31.1% since the peak of the rental market in May 2007 when it was €10.12 per square meter per month and all regions have seen serious declines since the peaks before the economic downturn. Rental prices have fallen the most in Aragon with a decline of 41.9%, are down 37.8% in Cantabria, down 36.5% in Valencia, down 35.9% in Castilla-LaMancha, down 34.8% in Murcia, down 30.5% in Rioja, down 30% in Asturias and down 29.5% in Andalucia, since the peak of the market. However, prices increased in April month on month in all regions except in Castilla-La Mancha where they fell by 0.1%. Sawdust, plaster dust, drywall dust, any kind of dust—none of it is good for your lungs, your floor, your tools, or your desire not to start a fire. Getting rid of it is both essential and easy. Rule 1: Catch dust while it’s airborne Because dust is first suspended in the air, it makes sense to use air to transport it for disposal. A wet–dry shop vacuum will take care of most of it. For example, hook a Dust Deputy cyclone collector ($100) to work with any vac and you create an efficient twostage dust collector that mimics what industrial wood shops use. The funnel-shaped Deputy swirls wood chips and dust like water going down the drain, collecting them in the bottom of the tank—the first stage. The remaining fine particles continue to the shop vacuum and its air filter. Rule 2: Be inventive Poke around woodworking-supply websites and you see all kinds of adapters, hoses, and shrouds to hook up to your equipment. That’s how we found the dust-trapping ChopShop Saw Hood from FastCap ($142, fastcap.com). Sawdust flies against the slippery back of the hood and falls by gravity into a spare cardboard box. Mission accomplished. If you prefer a home-brewed solution, make a hood out of plywood, particleboard, or sheet metal. Lumberyards did this all the time at the height of the radial-arm-saw era. Rule 3: Sweep up the rest Don’t waste your time with cheap brooms and a flimsy dustpan. Buy a contractor-grade push broom, a commercial-duty bench brush like a good old fashioned model made with horsehair and a wood block. They work incredibly well at removing even the finest talclike dust from work surfaces and work clothing. Get a big aluminum dustpan to round out your dust removal kit. Rule 4: Dress for dust Sometimes you just can’t help but create a lot of airborne dust, despite using dust collection equipment. Wear coveralls that you can slip out of easily when you go inside the house or into your car. Take a bench brush and knock the worst of the dust off you, then slip out of the coveralls and hang them on a nail by the door. Rule 5: Breathe easier Spend a little extra for a better quality dust mask. Greece counts down to default after Tsipras slams EU demands as ‘unreasonable’
Greece has become deadlocked with its international creditors just days before a potential default as its leaders were accused of “playing with the future of the country”. Meanwhile Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras said that Greece was not to blame for the lack of a deal. In an op-ed in French paper Le Monde this weekend, he blamed “the obsession of some institutional representatives who insist on unreasonable solutions and are being indifferent to the democratic result of recent Greek elections”. The debt-laden nation must pay back €304m (£218m) in loans due to the International Monetary Fund on Friday, but is struggling to reach a deal with the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF needed to unlock €7.2bn in vital funds due under its second bailout in 2012. Greece – led by left-wing Syriza since its January election win – is refusing to give ground on the pension cuts and labour market reform demanded by creditors in order to release the funds, scotching hopes that a deal might be reached over the weekend. Tsipras held a conference call last night with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande over the impasse. Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis – recently sidelined by Tsipras – meanwhile denied speculation that he would quit, tweeting that “rumours of my impending resignation are (for the umpteenth time) grossly premature”. But the glacial pace of the negotiations drew fire on both sides from senior European officials. Klaus Regling, managing director of the European Stability Mechanism, the eurozone’s financial rescue fund, warned: “If the Greek government refuses to engage in the reform process, it is playing with the future of the country. The risk is then great that past sacrifices
will have been in vain. Jose Manuel Barroso, who held the presidency of the European Commission for a decade, added that politicians had taken “too long” to find a solution. He told the BBC: “Sometimes I get the impression that people are waiting for an accident so that they can really focus [on] avoiding a bigger disaster. It’s too long, this time that has been taken to find a solution. I believe it’s important now to find that solution.” According to Greece’s Economy Minister, George Stathakis, the state will be able to scrape together enough funds to meet Friday’s IMF payment, although a total of €1.6bn is due by the end of the month, when the bailout programme expires. Even if Athens passes that hurdle, it will almost certainly fail to make €3.5bn of interest payments due on Greek bonds held by the ECB on 20 July. The uncertainty has tipped Greece’s devastated economy back into recession, while fears over default and a potential “Grexit” from the euro have prompted savers to pull cash out of the nation’s banks, which are being propped up by emergency support from the ECB. Households and businesses pulled out nearly €5bn in April amid worries that euro-denominated savings could be forcibly converted into vastly cheaper drachmas. Deposits could also be seized to recapitalise banks in a rescue akin to the “bail-in” of Cypriot banks two years ago, savers fear. The Barclays analyst Michael Gapen expects Syriza to back down rather than risking the nuclear scenario of default. He said: “Without an agreement, Greece could descend into what would effectively be an ‘exit’ from the euro area, where defaults and capital controls become a permanent feature.”

¿Por qué?
Why does Alqueria have a stable population? Stable, at least in terms of numbers. Stability is not a word one would apply to the mental state of the residents. Psychiatrists have written books, given after dinner speeches and generally ‘grown fat’ on the collective dysfunctional psyche of Alqueria’s population. The question could be better put, thus. “Why do people live there?”. Alqueria was rebuilt in a valley below the Sierra Alhamilla during Spain’s Muslim years. The Valley suffers mysterious temperature inversions due to complex climatic aberrations. The Village can be superheated, in the high forties centigrade and then within an hour the unfortunate residents of Alqueria shiver as the mercury plummets. Strange mists occur for no apparent reason, green, smelly and worryingly sticky. Where they come from, why they linger and where they go to are mysteries, unfathomable even to the most gifted meteorologists. They cause respiratory problems, aggravate the eye’s cornea and for some inexplicable reason can cause the bowels to become autonomous. Perhaps the most baffling atmospheric phenomenon affecting Alqueria is its smell. ‘The Alquerian Pong’ as it has be dubbed by observers is omnipresent. It infiltrates the highways and byways of the Pueblo. It pollutes sealed rooms, refrigerators and the glove-compartments of cars. It is always there. Alqueria does however have bad drains. The result of an early botched attempt by Roman engineers to bring sanitation to this backwater but ‘The Pong’ is a different kind of odour. A cross between Nigora Goat pheromones and very ripe
Stilton cheese is perhaps the best description f o r something that tries very hard to defy description. The people themselves are continually at each other’s throats. The two barrios comprising the Village hate each other will a will. Riots, civil unrest and general mischief is a daily occurrence and is very debilitating for the infrastructure and the tempers of Alqueria. Disowned by the Spanish Government after being somehow bypassed by the Christian Reconquest, perhaps on purpose, Alqueria became a stateless village. Declaring a republic they now fend for themselves. The only income is from their Remitroot crop. Alqueria being the only place where soil conditions are right for this remarkable plant to grow. They make their own laws, choose not to collect any form of taxation and govern by referendum. So to return to the original question. Why do people continue to live in this seemingly hostile environment and put their financial faith in the vagaries of the Remitroot growing season? Perhaps John Milton had the answer when he wrote. “Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heaven”

My wife has just recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer decease. It is at an early stage, but I would like to know if there is anything we should be doing from a legal point of view while she is still of able mind. (The original question was much longer with a lot more detail and involving other matters also. With the clients permission we have prepared this abbreviated version.) A. We would recommend that your wife issues you with a Spanish enduring power of attorney. (This is quick, easy and even though it could vary depending on the solicitor it will not cost you more than 300 euro). We have a booklet on the different types of powers of attorney you can sign in these circumstances. Simply request it by e-mail and we will post or e-mail it to you free of charge. Unlike in the UK this can only be issued while your wife understands what she is doing. If it was required later on a much more complicated procedure would be required using the local courts (this is an expensive and long procedure). The power of attorney is necessary because the moment she is no longer of able mind you will be able to handle her accounts, sell the property, etc while if this has not been done her accounts can not be touched , you can not sell a jointly owned
property etc. etc. The one thing she can not issue you with power of attorney for is for signing a new will, which is why we would recommend that you take a good look at her will to make sure that it is correct as she will not be able to modify it in any way the moments she no longer understands what she is doing. Make sure that it complies with the New Directive 650/2012 , that the beneficiaries are those she wishes , that you are comfortable with the named executor etc. etc. Remember when she is no longer of able mind the will can not be changed under any circumstance .I would look at your own will also, as if you have left everything to your wife you may wish to change this in favour of perhaps one of your children.In the UK. I would also recommend that you put things in motion to obtain a full enduring power of attorney. The forms can be downloaded from the internet and you can start things off by post. In the UK this can also be done after she is no longer of able mind, but there is no harm in doing it beforehand. We would strongly recommend a visit to your solicitor to discuss your situation in particular and to address at least the matters explained above.

Mr Tommy Fluffypants had to go to the vet to have his rabies jab and be chipped. We were all organised, with the cat flap blocked off by a 9 litre bottle of water, and the box on the kitchen table. Tommy was reclining with all the indolence of a Roman Emperor on one of our 4 kitchen chairs. I picked him up, but as my hands closed around his little body he slithered eel-like through my grasp. However, I reacted quickly enough to catch hold of his magnificent fluffy tail, and for a second we both pulled, putting the integrity of that tail in extreme jeopardy, but I prevailed, and reeled him in. I gathered all his legs together, rounded him into a furry ball, and propelled him headfirst into the box. But….as he was about to pass through the doorway he managed to free an arm, and stick it out at right angles. I recaptured the arm, but a leg had appeared. No sooner had I captured the leg than another arm materialised. I grabbed both arms and both legs, but he stretched his head up, so that I couldn’t get him in without decapitating him. I had his arms in one hand, his legs in the other. I let go of his legs to push his head through, reckoning that if I got his front half in the back half might follow. He braced his liberated legs against the doorway, slid backwards straight through my hands, shouldered the bottle of water aside, and broke for freedom. Round 2 involved taking the top

Spain has a very big café/restaurant/ bar culture. In fact, most places you’ll eat out at are all three at once! Café in the morning, restaurant at lunchtime, café again in the afternoon, and a bar in the evening. Remember that in Spain dinner is not a big deal or a big meal (Yes! 10 points to me for rhyming!) Also remember, lunch is the big meal and it’s around 2-3 o’clock in the afternoon. If you try to eat lunch at noon you will most likely be the only one eating and the waiters will make fun of you. There also might still be people drinking their
breakfast coffee and eating toast. Most of the time when you walk around town, you’ll see places to eat with signs or chalkboards outside advertising a menú del día (menu of the day) for a fixed price, around €7 in Córdoba, around €10 in the rest of Spain. This is really the best way to eat because it’s cheap, and you get a lot of food. Usually you get to pick two courses from a list, and it comes with a drink, bread and desert. Be aware that when you sit down at a restaurant in Spain the waiter will bring you bread, and if you touch it, you have to pay for it; it’s not usually free. I’ve even had to pay for ketchup at really touristy places. Sometimes they will bring you olives or tapas as a starter without ordering them for free or sometimes you have to pay. You never know. Also water isn’t free either. If you just ask for water, you’ll get bottled water and most likely fizzy bottled water at that (con o sin gas-with or w/out fizz). Ask for tap water (agua del grifo) if you want it for free. And don’t expect ice. For a country as hot as
Spain, they never serve drinks with ice, and if you ask for ice, you’ll get one cube. Lunch in Spain usually comes in courses: a first course (primer plato) and a second course (segundo plato). Usually you start with bread, a chopped up baguette, yum yum. Spaniards are almost incapable of eating lunch without white bread, and yet they all are very thin. So unfair. Maybe you’ll have some olives or cured ham, cheese, and salchicha to start with. First courses are usually lighter, like a salad, soup, or scrambled eggs

with something like mushrooms or fish. Seconds are generally heavier, like meat or fish, and potatoes or pasta. Desert usually consists of fruit, yogurt, flan, or natilla (kinda like pudding), followed by coffee of course (café con leche). One of my favorite long lunches in Spain, eating cuchinillo (baby pig) in Segovia with Marie, and yes, we drank that whole bottle of wine between us two. Made for a fun afternoon! In most normal restaurants, you just seat yourself; there isn’t a hostess. Most

places try to have tables outside too, best way to enjoy the wonderful Spanish sun. Also, don’t expect good service. You don’t usually leave tips for waiters here which means they could care less if you have to sit for half an hour before ordering. Eating out is a long, relaxed affair. Waiters in Spain make a salary and have pensions, so they don’t have to work for tips. I think this encourages big time laziness among restaurant staff. I hardly ever eat out when I don’t have to wave at least once to get the waiter’s attention for something. They also look so offended that you actually asked if you could order, sometimes they will intentionally ignore you or make you wait even longer. It’s kinda ridiculous. (For my Spanish friends reading this, in the States you always leave a 15-20% tip at a restaurant because waiters live off tips). In Spain you also have to ask for your bill at least three times, until finally you get up and walk to the cash register yourself. Grilled feta chicken with roast cherry tomatoes and roast potatoes For the grilled chicken 1 chicken breast dash olive oil salt and freshly ground black pepper 85g/3oz feta cheese, crumbled 1 sprig fresh thyme,
Ingredients: chopped 1 slice ciabatta, toasted For the balsamic roast cherry tomatoes 85g/3oz cherry

top with the feta cheese and thyme and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place on a baking tray, transfer to the oven and bake for eight minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. Place the chicken breast on a slice of toasted ciabatta. For the roasted cherry tomatoes, place the tomatoes on a baking sheet, drizzle over the olive oil and roast for ten minutes. Add the balsamic vinegar and roast for a further 2-3 minutes.

Cabrera Music Club
A non-profit making venture We are still working on the Cabrera Music Club venture! And keener than ever. We have had a couple of fantastic events and everyone has been delighted, which has spurred us on to further endeavours. July.. Never been done in Cabrera before !!!! We have arranged, by popular demand, a classical “String Quartet” concert evening on Tuesday July 14th. Through our connections we have met with a well known international violinist, Michael Thomas who started the world famous “Brodsky Quartet”. We have arranged for him to form a quartet to play in Los Pastores courtyard, and he has chosen other top musicians to accompany him, namely José Vélez (violin 2), Clara García (Viola) and Paloma García (cello). Though these musicians are coming from as far as Seville and Alicante, they will be playing as “Quarteto OCAL” They will be starting with the “Dvorak American Quartet”, there will then be approximately a 20 minute break, and then this will be followed by “Schubert´s Rosamunde”. These are both very popular pieces for a string quartet and this should be an exceptional night. As this will be a concert situation, there will be Cava and canapes served at 7.00pm included in the entry price of 18 euros. Concert starts at 8.00pm. Though drinks will be available in the interlude and can be preordered by early arrivals, we are only allowing meals to be served after the completion of the concert at approximately 9.30. Please support us in this special event as we attempt to please all tastes. We feel this will be a good start preceeding the Piano Concert on September 5th with Pedro Valero, pianist and singers Maria Garcia, soprano and Antonio Magno, tenor presented by the Cabrera Social Committee. Restaurant Dining Once again, there’s a multitude of distinctions. You can sit down and have a full meal in a comedor , a cafetería , a restaurante or a marisquería – all in addition to the more food-oriented bars. Comedores are the places to seek out if your main criteria are price and quantity. Sometimes you will see them attached to a bar (often in a room behind), or as the dining room of a hostal or pensión , but as often as not they’re virtually unmarked and discovered only if you pass an open door. These roadside inns dotted along the highways between towns and cities have been serving Spanish fare for hundreds of years, and the best ventas are wonderful places to get tasty country cooking at bargain prices. Again the menu del dia is the one to go for and the best places usually have quite a gathering of lorries in their car park, shrewd long-distance truck drivers being among the best customers. Replacing comedores to some extent are cafeterías, which the local authorities grade from one to three cups (the ratings, as with restaurants, seem to be based on facilities offered rather than the quality of the food). These can be good value, too, especially the self-service places, but their emphasis is more northern European and the light snackmeals served tend to be dull. Food here often comes in the form of a plato combinado – literally a combined plate – which will be something like egg and chips or calamares and salad (or occasionally a weird combination like steak and a piece of fish), often with bread and a drink included. This will generally cost in the region of 4.50 to 6.00 Euros Cafeterias often serve some kind of menu del dia as well. You may prefer to get your plato combinado at a bar, which in small towns with no comedores may be the only way to eat inexpensively. Moving up the scale there are restaurantes (designated by one to five forks) and marisquerias, the latter serving exclusively fish and seafood. Restaurantes at the bottom of the scale are often not much different in price from

“I’ve missed this tiny thing for nearly seventy years. And now the earth, made sludgy and chewable with the melting snow, has spat out a relic. Spat it into my hands. But where from?” It seems that Healey’s paternal grandmother who had been showing signs of senility came out with the simple but inspiring phrase that prompted this debut novel: “My friend is missing.” The critics loved it. I loved it. Healey didn’t want it to be too bleak portraying a vulnerable octogenarian showing signs of dementia, trapped in a life of boredom and tedium: watching or attempting to watch tv, attempting to read when the words don’t make sense, waiting endlessly for the carer or the daughter. What a life! Nine publishers fought over its publication and the tv rights have already been sold. Suggestions regarding Judy Dench or Maggie Smith playing Maud are strong possibilities. Watch this space! Maud is 82, eccentric with an obsession for collecting anything and everything. She has done this since being a child but when it continues into old age it is infuriating for her daughter Helen. Most of it is rubbish after all. “Sufferers often seek refuge in a childhood version of themselves.” (Healey) Dementia transforms a previously safe and recognisable world into one that is frightening and strange and the author captures this remarkably well. So it is appropriate to run two timelines, one that takes us back to post-war (1946) when Maud was a 15 year old and then move to present date. The plot flits backwards and forwards and significantly the author uses various means to connect both timelines, a character or a memory of an event. Very clever. The potential bleakness is understanding the degeneration of Maud’s mind, her inability to sometimes recognise her daughter or her granddaughter, Katy. Imagine losing your way going to the corner shop, with pockets full of lists, her “paper memory,” many meaningless and taking home umpteen tins of peaches, the same every day. Or what about twelve calls to the doctor telling him you are ill in a short space of time then when he arrives telling him you are fighting fit? Also imagine that your one and only friend Elizabeth just disappears and in her muddled mind, Maud suspects that Peter, Elizabeth’s son must

be responsible for getting rid of her. She never trusted him, she thought he was deliberately starving his mother. Maud makes several unsuccessful attempts to visit her home, reports the disappearance to the police on four separate occasions to their amusement and her agitation then puts an ad in the local Echo. Phoning Peter during the night and forgetting why she was phoning him caused him to swear and complain. Poor Helen was always having to apologise. Carla, one of the carers didn’t help either. She relishes feeding Maud with the latest gossip particularly the gory bits which results in a distortion of Elizabeth’s disappearance: “Elizabeth locked in room-crack addicts in house. Bound and tortured in basement.” Ironically, Maud knows that her friend doesn’t have a basement so something isn’t quite right. So much for her paper memory. The whodunnit part of the story is the major one to follow and it will keep you riveted. It is woven into the Elizabeth is missing plot meticulously and concerns half-forgotten memories which hold the key to a dark secret from the distant past, an unsolved mystery. “I found it too late, far too late. Now I’ll never find her. She’ll always be missing and I’ll always be looking for her. I can’t bear it.” It is the discovery of the remains of a compact belonging to her sister and found in the garden of her octogenarian friend Elizabeth. “The mildewed mirror is like a window on a faded world, like a porthole looking out under the ocean. It makes {Maud} squirm with memories.” Sukey was Maud’s sister, seven years her senior and sophisticated. She loved dressing up and going dancing. Maud idolised her and they had a close relationship. Sukey married Frank who was a dodgy character and Maud’s lodger, Douglas disliked him intensely. He saw Frank as being a jealous man with a foul temper. Douglas had a soft spot for Sukey and he was always at Sukey’s house particularly when Frank was away working. Maud suspected they were having an affair which he denied. tea as was the weekly custom and she wanted to sleep there rather than return home. She then abruptly decided to return home and disappeared into thin air. This was 1946. Naturally her family was distraught and Pa blamed Frank. He thought she had been kidnapped or killed although he searched the town for her and even travelled to London scouring the streets in vain. The police had to deal with lots of cases of men and women disappearing so Sukey’s disappearance became unremarkable: “People are being reported missing left, right and centre. The men can’t get used to being back on Civvy Street, or the women can’t get used to having their husbands home again, and so they’re off.” A suitcase full of her clothes turns up but no Sukey. Two further devices are used to create mystery. One is the mad woman with a dark but tragic past who seems to stalk Sukey and Maud in a menacing way. On the night of Sukey’s disappearance the mad woman scared the living daylights out of her and neighbours heard her screaming. Maud is petrified when she chases after her on many occasions. She has been known to grab Maud and hit her with an umbrella. What does she know about Sukey’s disappearance? What is significant about her digging up of marrows? Is there a connection? If so, what is it? The second device is the narrative thread concerned with the Grosvenor Hotel murderer, Kenneth Lloyd Holmes due to hang for the murder of two women. In Maud’s demented mind perhaps Sukey was his third victim? “I had to know if he killed my sister.” So she writes to him before his execution. Maud’s mother and father died not knowing what happened to their daughter. “I don’t want to die like that,” admitted Maud. By the end of the novel past and present become fused with memories muddled. Earlier lucid thoughts change shape, lost in her state of dementia with this unsolved mystery. Well-written but unsettling. Publisher: Puffin.

Arsenal thrash villa in cup final
Arsenal became the most successful club in FA Cup history as they outclassed Aston Villa at Wembley to earn Arsene Wenger a recordequalling sixth triumph. The Gunners retained the trophy they won against Hull City a year ago to put Wenger’s total of wins alongside George Ramsay - who previously stood alone with the record for his victories with Villa between 1887 and 1920. Arsenal’s 12th final victory was never in doubt as they dominated with a magnificent display, the only surprise being that it took until five minutes before half-time for their control to be rewarded with Theo Walcott’s goal. Alexis Sanchez confirmed that superiority with one of the great FA Cup final goals shortly after the restart - a swerving, dipping 25yard thunderbolt that flew high past startled Villa keeper Shay Given. Villa were a shadow of the side that performed so impressively to beat Liverpool at Wembley in the semifinal, their flaws exposed ruthlessly as Per Mertesacker took advantage of an embarrassing lack of marking to head the third. Substitute Olivier Giroud’s fourth in the final moments only completed what was a harrowing day for Tim Sherwood’s side, who had travelled to Wembley high on optimism and expectation after an impressive run to the final. It was a day of triumph for Wenger, as he added another FA Cup to his three Premier League titles in a game that was a sharp contrast to the tension of last year’s final, when the Gunners had to recover from two goals down. And Wenger recorded a tactical victory over Villa counterpart Sherwood, with his decision to use the pace of Walcott to take on Villa’s defence rather than the power of Giroud reaping rich rewards. Sherwood’s big selection call to play Charles N’zogbia ahead of Gabriel Agbonlahor - never looked like working. By the time the latter was introduced, just after Arsenal had gone two up, the horse had bolted for a Villa team that simply never performed. Arsenal’s season can now be judged as a success, with the trophy adding to a third-placed finish
in the Premier League that assured Champions League football again. This was a day of unrelenting misery for Sherwood and his players watched at Wembley by owner Randy Lerner, who was sitting next to Villa fan Prince William. They will have to regard Premier League survival as their success this term, which was the main priority when the manager replaced Paul Lambert in February. Villa ended the league season by being thrashed 6-1 at Southampton and losing at home to relegated Burnley and the ominous signs of those performances were flagged up once more as Arsenal’s pace and mobility ran them ragged. Goalkeeper Given showed great athleticism to save from Laurent Koscielny, and Kieran Richardson blocked crucially from Walcott as he looked certain to score. Just as it looked as if Villa would somehow survive until half-time, Arsenal got the breakthrough they deserved, Walcott thumping a finish past Given at his near post after Sanchez headed down Nacho Monreal’s cross. Before Villa could regroup after halftime, Sanchez effectively settled the contest with a magical FA Cup final moment, sending a bullet finish high past Given with the keeper barely having time to react. Villa, pretty much as they had looked from the first whistle, were shellshocked and Mertesacker was allowed by Christian Benteke to rise unmarked and head in the third. The formalities were completed with virtually the last kick of the game when Giroud turned in Alex OxladeChamberlain’s cross in front of a rapidly-emptying Villa end, with their supporters having had little more than a couple of half-hearted penalty appeals to sustain them. The wait is over, the mission completed and the comeback has begun for Jessica Ennis-Hill. The Olympic champion, in her first heptathlon since winning gold on that glorious Saturday evening in London nearly three years ago, finished fourth overall at the HypoMeeting in Gotzis, soaring above her initial points target with a 6520-points total. “I’ve still got that competitive edge, I’ve still got that strength to dig deep,” she said, smiling. But how good was her performance and might she deliver another sparkling performance at an Olympics? How good is fourth place? As Ennis-Hill kneeled on the start line, head bowed as she placed each foot on the blocks, she did not know what to expect. No-one did. When she looked up to stare at the line of 10 hurdles in front of her, she was about to run at full speed into the unknown. The 29-year-old knew she would have no trouble completing the first of heptathlon’s disciplines, but could she hurdle, high jump, shot put and run 200m in the same day, then throw, jump and run some more 24 hours later? “I think it’s hard to know what to expect,” she said on the Friday before competition, admitting to nerves and excitement. But by Sunday afternoon, on a sun-soaked day in Austria, EnnisHill could say she was now ranked the fourth best heptathlete in the world, even though she had been
absent from the sport for years, experienced the life-changing impact of motherhood and had her training disrupted by a troublesome Achilles. “I’m really, really pleased,” she said. “Some of my events have been pretty poor, pretty standard. I feel there’s so much more to come. If someone had said I’d have had 6,520 beforehand I would have taken that with both hands. It’s a pleasing position to be in after all that time off.” Can she still compete with the best? Despite the frustration of not hurdling as well as she would have hoped, of not throwing the javelin as far as she would have wanted, and being below her best in every event, Ennis-Hill finished just 11 points adrift of third place and 27 points from second. “It’s a superb comeback,” beamed Toni Minichiello, Ennis-Hill’s coach. But while she is within touching distance of the majority, there are the few - those who were once inspired by her - setting a high standard. Brianne Theisen-Eaton, the Canadian who won the prestigious invitational event, amassed nearly 300 points more than the former world champion and recorded the highest score by a heptathlete since the Briton won in London. Jorge Lorenzo secures third successive win Jorge Lorenzo secured his third successive MotoGP win with victory at Mugello to boost his world title hopes. The 28-year-old two-time world champion beat pole sitter Andrea Iannone and championship leader Valentino Rossi, who finished third. Defending champion Marc Marquez, fourth in the standings, crashed with six laps remaining. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow also failed to finish, crashing out from fifth with three laps to go. Lorenzo is now six points behind Rossi in the championship standings. “I’ve been in this form in the past,” said Lorenzo. “I’ve won three races in a row before but now I want to make it four [Catalunya in a fortnight].” The Spaniard dominated from the outset, moving into the lead on the first lap and powering ahead of rivals, at times lapping over a second quicker than anyone else. Marquez had battled superbly to climb from 13th to third but his late crash provided a huge dent to his title hopes. He is fifth in the standings, 49 points behind leader Rossi. All the members commented on the great condition of the course, especially Neil Bown who came out the winner with 36 points. Andy Kaye continued his recent good form to claim second spot on 34, with a resurgent Greg Knight scoring 33 in third place. Both Neil and Andy added to their prize pot with Nearest The Pin awards, and Andy gilded the lily with a birdie 2 for his third prize of the day. Mondays Winners Thirty two players contested the individual stableford at Marina Phoenix on Monday 25th. Margaret Budd lead the way with 38 points to win the ladies division from Ann Kavanagh (35) in second followed by Miriam Staunton (34) third. Hylton Smith scored 39 points to win the men’s division. John Meagher (36) was second ahead of José Postigo (35) in third place. The only two’s prize went to John Meagher (9th). Thursday’s team game three to count on par threes and two on the rest.
