Sinitta is not impressed with Nick Grimshaw and Rita Ora joining the X Factor, threatens to join The Voice in protest. Simon Cowell’s former flame is mourning the loss of Louis Walsh from the show, hints at plan to defect to the BBC. SIMON Cowell has got on the wrong side of his former girlfriend Sinitta. The X Factor boss recently hired Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw to join him and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini on the ITV show’s judging panel. And it sounds as though So Macho singer Sinitta, who often serves at Simon’s helper on the Judges’ Houses show, is not impressed with the newbies’ credentials. Speaking to the Daily Star, she said: “It’s not going to be the same with out Louis. “Simon and Nick will have a laugh but I
don’t think he [Nick] is a mentor. [He has] no singing experience at all “Rita is obviously amazing doing extremely well but it’s not even five years in the game. I think they could have had someone a bit more seasoned.” Meanwhile, once again hinting that she was the best woman for the job, Sinitta said she may be packing up her banana leaves and heading over to rival BBCOne show The Voice. “The Voice needs someone so I wouldn’t even have to stick two fingers up at Simon if I went there, I might be doing him a favour,” she joked. “Don’t worry i’ll do The Voice. I would make the best judge, you don’t understand how passionate I am about music and about mentoring.” Source AFP
LIONEL RITCHIE HEADS THE CHARTS AGAIN
The final Sunday album charts were dominated by Glastonbury acts – with Lionel Richie scoring his first British No 1 in 23 years. Fans sent the singer’s album, The Definitive Collection, to the top spot after a well-received performance on the Pyramid Stage during the third day of the festival. The album was first released in 2003, reaching No 10 in the UK charts. The position marks Richie’s first UK album No 1 since Back to Front in 1992. The Definitive Collection will be the last album named No 1 on a Sunday as the charts move to Fridays to tie in with a new global music release day. “I was overwhelmed performing at Glastonbury in front of all those people, and for the fans to make the album No 1 is unbelievable,” Richie said. “The UK has always been a special place for me.” Thank you to all my fans who helped me reach number 1 in the official UK album chart! #lovemyfans https://t. co/NJy4cQokDH — Lionel Richie (@LionelRichie) July 5, 2015 Nearly half of the Top 40 albums belonged to acts that performed at Glastonbury this year. Florence and The Machine’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful was second in the charts and James Bay’s Chaos and the Calm third. Veteran folk-rock guitarist Richard Thompson scored his first Top 10 album at the age of 66. The former guitarist with Fairport Convention entered the charts at No 10 with Still. Kanye West, who headlined the Pyramid Stage on the Saturday, failed to reap a Glastonbury charts boost, however.
The last official UK No 1 single to be announced on a Sunday was Belgian DJ Lost Frequencies with dance track “Are You with Me”, his first to top the UK charts. From this Friday, the Official Charts Company will publish the Top 100 albums and singles at 6pm on a Friday. Martin Talbot, of the Official Charts Company, said: “It is the end of an era. The official chart has been announced every Sunday afternoon for 27 years. But the music industry changes, it’s in a constant state of flux, and we’ve always looked to move forward with it. “It makes sense for the charts to move so that when records are released on a Friday there is a full seven days of sales taken into account.” BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show will also switch to Fridays with the DJ Greg James, as part of his drivetime show. It follows a call by the music body, The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), for new releases to come out on the same day around the world. Currently, albums and singles are released on different days around the world. This had “compelling logic” as most fans want to buy and listen to music at the start of the weekend, Frances Moore, the chief executive of the
IFPI said. According to research for the British Phonographic Industry, 60 per cent of consumers who buy or stream new music (who expressed a preference), prefer it to come out on a Saturday or Friday. The first official UK Singles Chart began in 1952, and it was published in the NME. The chart moved from Tuesday lunchtime to Sunday evening in 1987. The digital downloads chart started in 2004 and was integrated into the UK Top 40 three years later. A chart countdown was put on the radio with Alan Freeman playing the Top 20 on Pick of the Pops in 1962. The Radio 1 show brought in 4 million listeners in the 1980s, although in recent year it has fallen to about 1.2 million. DJs to preside over the chart show include Tony Blackburn and Fearne Cotton. Relief as Russian cargo ship docks at space station

Irish singer Val Doonican dies aged 88
Doonican, who grew up in Waterford on the southeast coast of Ireland, was the star of his own show on the BBC from 1965 to 1986, featuring his own performances and those of guest artists. He had started writing music from an early age and had been touring as part of various groups with limited success until in 1963 he appeared on Britain’s main variety TV program of the day, “Sunday Night at the London Palladium”.
An unmanned Russian cargo ship successfully docked with the International Space Station on Sunday following a string of failed attempts to resupply the orbital laboratory. “The transport cargo ship Progress M-28M has docked with the... Russian segment of the ISS at 10:11am Moscow time (0711 GMT),” the Russian federal space agency (Roscosmos) said in a statement. The ship is carrying more than 2,300 kilos of oxygen, fuel, food, and scientific equipment, as well as personal packages for the international crew of three. Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko and US astronaut Scott Kelly are part of Expedition 44 currently in space, to be joined by three more people later this month. Commander Padalka is scheduled to
return to Earth in November while Kornienko and Kelly are part of a yearlong mission and will not go home until next March.
That one eight-minute spot transformed his fortunes, prompting Doonican to say many times that he had become “an overnight success after 17 years.”
The Russian crew members oversaw the automatic docking of the Progress, which arrived after circling Earth 34 times following its launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 3.
His jumpers became his trademark along with the rocking chair from which he often performed and his show launched numerous artists’ careers including that of Irish comedian Dave Allen.
“Congratulations guys, your cargo ship has arrived,” Padalka could be heard telling ground control after contact was complete with the ship, which came in “perfect shape” according to NASA.
Doonican stopped performing in 2009 after over 60 years in showbusiness. He was a keen golfer and watercolour painter. In June 2011 he was recognized by the Mayor of Waterford and bestowed the Freedom of the City The Progress will remain docked to the ISS for four months getting filled of his home town. with trash and discarded gear before He leaves behind his wife Lynn, it journeys back to Earth, burning up daughters Sarah and Fiona and two on re-entry over the Pacific Ocean. grandchildren. Tourist is fined by Spanish court
A holidaymaker has been fined after he was ejected from a plane by police and pinned down by officers on a runway. Stewart Kennedy was forcibly removed from a Ryanair flight at Tenerife South Airport on Tuesday by Spanish cops following a request by the plane’s pilot. The 30-year-old from Portsmouth has been barred for life from flying with the low-cost airline following his behaviour on board. Tenerife officials revealed Kennedy was fined £350 after being convicted of resisting arrest. He was dealt with during a fasttrack trial in a private hearing on Wednesday in Granadilla de Abona, and was given four months to pay the fine. Allegations about his behaviour on board the flight, where he is said to have allegedly harassed female passengers and tried to fight with a man who stood up for them before passing out in the toilet, did not form part of the charges. Ryanair confirmed after the incident Kennedy has been banned for life from flying with the low-cost airline. A spokesman said: “The crew of this flight from Bournemouth to Tenerife requested police

assistance after a passenger become disruptive in-flight. “The aircraft landed normally and police removed and detained this individual upon arrival at Tenerife. “We will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behaviour at any time and we sincerely apologise to other customers for any inconvenience caused. “The safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our number one priority.” Passenger Keiran Campbell said: “He carried on kicking off as airport security, as you can see from pictures, and he passed out in the toilet after trying to fight another passenger, who I believe was sticking up for the girls. “The police came onto the flight after we arrived and carried him off.” dailyrecord.co.uk

Scorchio!!
The scorching weather affecting Spain will not go away until mid-July, experts are warning. As the country entered its second back-to-back heatwave on Friday, the National Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said that even though Spanish summers are always hot, recently recorded temperatures are “atypical and significantly above the maximum average for these months of the year.” “The heatwave is dangerous not just because of its absolute values, but because it is very prolonged,” said Cayetano Torres, AEMET’s delegate in the Madrid region. Twenty-seven provinces were on alert on Friday for unusually hot weather. What we are experiencing now is a cloud of African heat” Last weekend, the Spanish capital registered temperatures of 41ºC. Then, on Wednesday and Thursday, there was a slight letup of three to four degrees. But the AEMET’s forecast between now and mid-July is, as Torres says in a half-humorous, half-serious tone, that it’s going to be “so hot it’s scary, scary enough to get out of Madrid.” Regional health authorities are keeping the alert level at the maximum “because the high forecast for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday is upwards of
38.5ºC,” says the health department on its website. “Between today and Monday temperatures will gradually rise from 38ºC to 40 to 41ºC, and will stay that way until July 13,” said Torres, adding that climate change cannot be entirely blamed for the burning heat. This time the cause is a body of hot air coming in from the African desert that is affecting Spain, France and Britain. “What we are experiencing now is a cloud of African heat,” said Torres. He notes that maximum average temperatures for late June and early July are in the 30ºC range, whereas this year it is 40ºC. But in downtown Madrid, it is going to feel even hotter than that. “Pedestrians are subjected to as much as 50ºC even if the ambient temperature is 40ºC,” says Torres. “The pavement heats up above 40ºC, which combined with the car engines will turn downtown Madrid into an oven.” Nights will bring little respite. Even if temperatures formally drop to as little as 24ºC, the heat is already trapped inside buildings, ensuring that the heatwave is “powerful and prolonged.” Elpais.com

Reaching final Iran nuclear deal ‘could go either way,’ as deadline nears Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that the U.S. and Iran are closer to reaching a final nuclear deal but expressed uncertainty about hitting their 48-hour deadline, saying negotiations “could go either way.” Kerry made his comments during a break in one-on-one talks in Vienna with Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. Zarif said Saturday that he and Kerry’s teams made significant headway by reaching a tentative agreement on some sanctions now being imposed on Iran for its nuclear program. However, the deal must be approved by diplomats from the five other world powers involved in the talks, who are returning to Vienna on Sunday. In addition, major sticking points remain on such issues as inspections of Iranian nuclearrelated facilities. “We have in fact made genuine progress but … we are not yet where we need to be on several of the most difficult issues,” said Kerry, who was in his ninth day of negotiations in Vienna. “While I completely agree with … Zarif that we have never been closer, at this point, this negotiation could go either way.” The United States and the five other world powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia -- have been negotiating with
international sanctions.
The sides reached a framework agreement in April, with hopes of reaching a final deal this summer.
The package was extended three times, most recently on June 30.
Tuesday’s deadline is the latest that has been set for a comprehensive pact that would replace the interim deal the world powers and Iran reached in November 2013.
Critics of the United States’ diplomacy on the issue argue that President Obama’s administration has been too conciliatory over the course of the negotiations. Obama and U.S. officials say that is untrue. But they’ve also fiercely defended their overtures to Tehran and their willingness to allow the Iranians to maintain significant nuclear infrastructure, on the argument that a diplomatic agreement is preferable to military conflict.
Tehran has denied that its enrichment program is for creating a nuclear weapon. “If hard choices are made this week we can get an agreement,” Kerry also said. “If they are not made they will not. … If there’s unwillingness to move on things that are important, of course we will walk away.” If a deal is clinched by Tuesday, it would set up a decade of restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for relief from
CALAIS CHAOS: 150 MIGRANTS TRY TO STORM CHANNEL TUNNEL
Dozens of migrants trying to stow away on vehicles crossing the Channel by tunnel between France and England broke through perimeter fences at Calais overnight, temporarily halting traffic, a Eurotunnel spokesman said on Saturday. The disruption was the latest in a series of incidents involving some 3,000 migrants, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, who are camped around the northern French port in the hope of reaching Britain. “At around 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Friday there were migrants all around the perimeter trying to break through the fences,” the Eurotunnel spokesman told reporters. “There was a lot of disruption.” Both freight and passenger services were temporarily halted during the night but are now running normally, although with some delays due to the backlog, he added. E u r o s t a r , which also runs passenger trains through the tunnel, though not at night, said its services had not been affected. Over the past month, the growing numbers
5
Iran for two years on curtailing that country’s uranium enrichment program toward creating a nuclear weapons.
of migrants at Calais have also been trying to take advantage of a series of strikes by port workers that have caused long lines of trucks to build up on the approach roads to the port. Calais is one of the front lines in a wider immigration crisis in which European countries are struggling to agree among themselves how to deal with growing numbers of migrants fleeing conflict or poverty. Many want to get to Britain because they speak English, have family connections or are convinced they stand a better chance of getting a job there. France and Britain agreed on Thursday to step up efforts to secure the port and the Channel Tunnel. breitbart.com
“We want a good agreement, only a good agreement. And we are not going to shave anywhere at the margins in order just to get an agreement,” Kerry said. “This is something that the world will analyze, experts everywhere will look at. There are plenty of people in the nonproliferation community, nuclear experts who will look at this and none of us are going to be content to do something that can’t pass scrutiny.” Foxnews.com

Facebook Spain and Twitter Spain, the Spanish branches of the two popular social networking websites, declare just a minimal part of the business that they generate in the Spanish market as revenue. As other technology and internet companies do, they take advantage of the lack of a physical location for their business and bill for services from Ireland, a country that has a much more favorable tax regime, while at the same time maintaining a small structure in Spain. According to the companys’ accounts, both firms saw revenues of just €7 million in Spain in 2014. Both companies have seen rises in the revenues they declare in the country, but they continue to be at minimum levels compared to the volume of business they actually generate in the Spanish market. Their revenues are billed to other companies in the same group for support and marketing services performed by their Spanish affiliates. Facebook Spain saw turnover of €3.9 million in 2014, compared to the €2.7 million seen the year before. Its operating income grew 49%, to €295,850, while its net profit grew 48%, to €206,296. The company paid €84,114 of taxes on its profits, according to the accounts approved by the group’s headquarters in California in May of this year. Tech firms that bill from Ireland barely pay any taxes in that country either, given that the companies have structures in place that allow them to divert their profits. An investigation by US Congress revealed that one of the main companies that make up Apple was essentially stateless from a fiscal point of view: it paid no tax in the United States because its registered office was in Ireland, and it didn’t pay tax in Ireland because its physical address was in the US. These figures for Facebook are in
direct contrast with all estimates regarding its revenues in the Spanish market. According to data from tech website Techcrunch, Facebook has 18 million active monthly users in Spain and the average income per user for the company in Europe is around €9 a year – which would mean real revenues of more than €150 million. In reality, all the income from the Spanish affiliate is billed as sales and marketing support and services to Facebook Ireland Limited, and it is this company that bills the real revenues of the group in the Spanish market. Revenues from Facebook Spain simply cover personnel costs, advertising and rents. The European Union has spent years trying to close these legal loopholes so that these firms pay their taxes It’s the same situation with Twitter Spain. The Spanish affiliate of the microblogging site tripled its business in Spain in 2014, passing from €983,000 to €3.09 million. It also saw its operating income triple to €235,000, and its net profit go up to €147,066, according to the company’s accounts, which were approved in June by Twitter International Company in Ireland. Twitter Spain paid €81,535 on taxes on profits. The European Union has spent years trying to close these legal loopholes so that these firms pay their taxes. The European Commission is trying to rectify legislation covering the relationships between parent companies and subsidiaries, which was originally conceived to avoid situations of double taxation for companies operating in different member states, rather than as a means for multinationals to avoid paying tax. But for now it has failed to do so. Elpais.com

Making a space feel open and light is key in summer decoration. Selecting items like fabric like sheer for window treatments or making an effort to reorganize space and eliminate clutter can easily lift the feeling of a space. Whitewashing walls and floors are also a sure way to give a home a beach feel while making a room appear expansive.

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is a private club founded on 23 July 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was off Worple Road, Wimbledon. In 1876, lawn tennis, a game devised by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally given the name Sphairistikè was added to the activities of the club. In spring 1877, the club was renamed ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signaled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship. A new code of laws, replacing the code administered by the Marylebone Cricket Club, was drawn up for the event. Today’s rules are similar except for details such as the height of the net and posts and the distance of the service line from the net. The inaugural 1877 Wimbledon Championship opened on 9 July 1877. The Gentlemen’s Singles was the only event held and was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final. The lawns at the ground were arranged so that the principal court was in the middle with the others arranged around it, hence the title ‘Centre Court’.The name was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road, although no longer a true description of its location. However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the Centre Court was once more correctly defined. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description.

Ladies Championship, 1884. First prize, awarded to Maud Watson, was a silver flower-basket worth 20 guineas. By 1882, activity at the club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899.

In 1884, the club added Ladies’ Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles competitions. Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles events were added in 1913. Until 1922, the reigning champion had to play only in the final, against whomever had won through to challenge him/her. As with the other three Major or Grand Slam events, Wimbledon was contested by top-ranked amateur players, professional players were prohibited from participating. This changed with the advent of the open era in 1968. No British man won the singles event at Wimbledon between Fred Perry in 1936 and Andy Murray in 2013, while no British woman has won since Virginia Wade in 1977, although Annabel Croft and Laura Robson won the Girls’ Championship in 1984 and 2008 respectively. The Championship was first televised in 1937.

Skin-So-Soft was initially launched as bath oil in 1961 and its use as an insect repellent was entirely unforeseen. There is much anecdotal evidence of the effectiveness of Skin-So-Soft in deterring mosquito bites and many people buy and use it regularly even the British Royal Marine Commandos.

Summer safety for youngeer n r d l i h c While it’s important to be prepared for any dangers that children might face during the summer, it’s also important to let them run around and have fun. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) believes that children’s activity and play need to be as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible. “Summer is a great time for children to get out and experience the world around them,” says David Walker, head of leisure safety at RoSPA. “During the summer months, we see a rise in injuries associated with play and leisure activities. You need to be aware of safely issues, but this isn’t a reason to stop children enjoying activities. In many cases, simple steps can be taken to avoid injury.”

The brilliant Nikola Tesla Tesla was born in 1856 in what’s now Croatia; aged 14 he was so gifted that he’d work out complex sums in his head and his teachers suspected him of cheating. He went on to finish the 4 year course in just 3. He was then bedridden for 9 months with cholera ran away afterwards to avoid army conscription. At Polytechnic in Vienna his claim that he studied from 3am to 11pm is probably true as he admitted in later years to never having more than 2 hours sleep a night. He excelled in his first year though his family were warned he would die from overwork. Then he argued with his tutors and got addicted to gambling, losing then winning back his allowance and tuition fees. By exam time he hadn’t studied, was refused an extension and left without graduating. In 1882 Tesla started work for the Edison Company in France, a few years later when relocating to New York his money was stolen and he arrived penniless. He started work for Thomas Edison who allegedly offered him $50,000 if he could fix all the problems with his DC motor system. Of course Tesla did exactly that yet when he asked for the reward he was told it was just ‘American humour.’ Tesla resigned and set up his own company in 1886. Tesla favoured AC motors yet his investors
HOT SALES!
I thought it was free, didn’t you? Rumour has it
that it’s not…or it might not be. What is it? It’s the Sun, not the newspaper, but the star-no not THAT newspaper either. THE Sun which according to one lady she has owned for the last five years, is now up for sale. You can buy your own small plots of that spherical ball of hot plasma, if you are minded to do so. Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s get down to whichever supermarket is selling it and pick up our Sun chunks! I don’t know where I’d keep mine, we haven’t got that much room in the freezer, but that’s a bridge to cross at a later date. What’s worrying here is, this isn’t made up. It is a serious business venture, people were charged a Euro for a plot. Unsurprisingly, eBay, where it is being offered, have refused to continue selling it on their site. No, I can’t think why that’s happened either! But as is often the case, this piece of news triggered my curiosity and I couldn’t resist doing a bit of digging to find other things selling on the internet that you wouldn’t normally find on the shelves at your favourite shop. If buying a star isn’t your thing, how about paying for someone to stand in a queue for you? You can do that too! The drawback is that this is only available if you live in the Washington area of America. If you do, then you can pay someone to stand for hours in a queue for you while you relax nearby having a coffee, then they’ll contact you when the front is in sight. Very civilized! Or maybe you might fancy buying a country? New Zealand is well known for a number of reasons. The only ones I can readily recall at the moment are that “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” were shot there, they’ve got quite a good rugby team, and the Silver Ferns are a nifty netball team too. Well, you’ll be kicking yourself, because you could have taken the chance to buy it when it was for sale in 2006. Someone had even offered 3000 dollars for it, before the sale was removed by eBay. Maybe it’s just as well it didn’t sell. All those mountains? It’d be a real devil to gift wrap! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

disagreed and sacked him, again he was broke so worked as a labourer before setting up the Tesla Electric Company. Within a year he had perfected his own AC motor, selling the system in 1888 to Westinghouse for $60,000, plus a $2000 a month (nowadays equal to $60K) consultancy position and future royalties on the electricity his motors produced. This was the time of the ‘War of Currents’ which pitted Edison against Westinghouse to decide whether AC or DC would be the future power supply for America and the world. As the stakes were so high Tesla was able to negotiate this almost extortionate price as his was the first commercially available AC motor. Within a few years Edison was broke; by 1897 Westinghouse had paid out over $200,000 in royalties and was close to bankruptcy, so a negotiated final payment to Tesla of $216,000 (about $6m nowadays) bought out the royalty clause on Tesla’s patents they were using. In 1899 Tesla moved to Colorado Springs and set up a laboratory for his high voltage experiments. He created artificial lightning which was so powerful that its thunder was heard 15 miles away, light bulbs glowed even when turned off and sparks flew between the earth and peoples feet as they walked. The town’s generator six miles away
burnt out. Tesla was way ahead of his time; he experimented with radio, radar, wireless power a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, even a Death Ray. One year before the X-Ray was officially discovered Tesler took the first ever X-Ray picture when trying to photograph the hand of his friend Mark Twain. Tesla even built a radio controlled boat which the audience were convinced had a trained monkey inside steering it. Like the Death Ray before, he tried to sell the design for use in torpedoes to the American military without success. Tesla chose to live in hotels, dining alone at precise hours, he had friends amongst his contempories yet seemingly never had relationships with women. Tesla was a brilliant man and was awarded about 300 patents in his lifetime yet he died alone and penniless in 1943. The American Government immediately ransacked his lodgings and seized his possessions to protect his work from falling into the wrong hands.

Planning a holiday in Greece? Here’s what you need to know More than a million British holidaymakers will be heading to Greece this summer, and as the crisis unfolds many will naturally be feeling nervous about how it could affect them. Greek banks are shut and there are restrictions on how much Greeks can withdraw from banks known as capital controls. But tourists' credit and bank cards issued abroad can be used at functioning cash machines freely subject to queues and the amount of cash in them. Here is the latest advice from travel experts. How much cash should I bring? Travel advice from the Foreign Office says that while banks are closed in Greece, tourists should make sure they take sufficient euros in cash "to cover the
duration of your stay, emergencies, unforeseen circumstances and any unexpected delays". "You should take appropriate security precautions against theft. There are currently no restrictions on taking unspent euros out of Greece at the end of your stay," it adds. Andrew Brown, from Post Office Travel Money, says couples spend an average of around £500 in cash on a fortnight's holiday - on things like meals out, local trips and coffees. For a family, that figure is £700. That does not include accommodation, and the advice is to contact your hotel, internet booking company or villa owner beforehand, to see whether it is possible to pay in advance in sterling. Once there, visitors are advised to use safes
and deposit boxes to store cash, and to split money between family members. The Foreign Office also updated its travel advice following the recent vote rejecting the terms of an international bailout, saying that "the outcome of this referendum may lead to an increase in demonstrations across the country". Is this cash covered by travel insurance? The insurance group, Aviva, has doubled the cover for stolen money for people travelling to Greece having bought its travel insurance. The standard amount of lost cash covered goes up to £600 from £300 per adult, so a couple would have £1,200 of cash protected. The insurer said it wanted customers who were carrying more cash
Protect your home with LIBERTY QUALITY HOME Insurance Probably the biggest asset you will ever buy will be your home so it’s vital you are well protected with a quality insurance policy that will cover you as you wish to be covered. With Liberty QUALITY HOME Insurance you can be assured it does what it says on the tin, so to speak; it gives you QUALITY cover for your most prized possession. Liberty QUALITY HOME policies are available with three levels of protection namely: Basic; Plus and Premium cover. All three options can include our two new additional services that you can use free of charge, with just a telephone call: A DIY assistance service - once a year, during weekdays, you can request for a professional to handle certain small household tasks like plumbing, hanging artworks or erecting flat-pack furniture for example, with up to 3 hours of labour costs. And also, an IT service for home technology equipment that can provide support via telephone or on-line chat. When the technicalities are, may be, a little too complicated for you, we can help with computers, multimedia players and browsers. Sometimes help is provided insitu for the first hour. What’s more, as a new feature this year, Liberty has added a new cover: the unblocking of pipes, even if an incident has not occurred. A very useful added value that very few insurance companies offer. The BASIC protection guarantees essential home coverage at an affordable price. Optional additional covers are available. For example, the landlords can take advantage by taking out defense cover to claim for imperfections caused by tenants and non-payment of rent. The PLUS option additionally covers: the costs of aesthetic restoration of the building and its contents; rebuilding or replanting a garden. PLUS also covers: 100% of the cost of glass and ceramic household appliances; broken windows; Plexiglass/Perspex furniture breakages, and mugging. Refrigerated goods are also
covered, as is garden furniture. And the PREMIUM protection goes that little bit further. As part of its significant improvement, it covers the costs that the PLUS policy offers but includes: cover for costs resulting from excess water consumption through broken pipes; solar panel glass; total building collapse; accidental spillage of hazardous liquids, on the carpet for example. Whichever cover you prefer, some aspects can be tailor-made accordingly to suit your personal circumstances. Optional extra covers can include: personal accidents at home, increased cover limits for specified valuable objects like jewelry or cameras for example; all risks outside the home on specified and non-specified goods, as well as in storerooms; all risks against accidental damage to the home, including property subsidence; public liability for dangerous breeds of dog. to Greece to be confident that they were covered if the money were lost or stolen. Other insurers have followed suit, adding to the cash protection available but stressing the need for travellers to take care of their cash. Travel association Abta has updated its advice, saying: "Holidaymakers should check how much cash their travel insurance policy covers them for and should take appropriate security precautions against theft such as using their hotel safe or splitting cash up between their party." Will I be able to use credit or debit cards in restaurants and shops? If so, will there be a limit on how much I can spend? Will tavernas take plastic? The new limits on withdrawals from ATMs by those with Greek bank accounts do not apply to tourists, but there is concern that cash machines will be empty. All cards currently accepted, such as MasterCard and Visa, will continue to work as normal. Previous experience suggests that smaller shops and restaurants may be reluctant to accept credit and debit cards, preferring customers to pay in cash instead. That is because they might find it difficult to get hold of cash from their own accounts. What about my car rental? There have been reports of car rental providers asking for cash, rather than vouchers, although this has not been confirmed by the companies. As with accommodation, it may be a good idea to check in advance. Will the ATMs have enough money in them? It depends on where you are, but it is certainly a risk. As a general rule, ATMs are more likely to run out of cash on the Greek islands than on the mainland. Cash is king in Greece Will I be able to use pre-paid currency cards or travellers' cheques? Currency cards can be loaded with a foreign currency at a pre-agreed
e x c h a n g e rate and used in shops or at ATMs whilst abroad without incurring commissions or transaction fees. Again, smaller shops might start to be reluctant to take them, although they are still fully functioning. Travellers' cheques are not widely accepted so it would not be advisable to rely on them as the only source of payment. Western Union, the world's largest money transfer company, is closed for business in Greece but transfers can be made into the country. If Greece were to leave the eurozone, how long would euros be valid for? Post Office Travel Money's Andrew Brown says holidaymakers should not panic if Greece leaves the eurozone. If this happened, it would take around 18 months for the Greek drachma to be re-introduced, during which time the euro would continue to be the legal currency. A Visa spokesman added: "While there are some issues that would be outside Visa's control, we would work with all relevant parties to help ensure a swift transition to a new currency with the minimum possible disruption to consumers and retailers." Will my insurance policy cover my losses if
I decide to cancel? The advice from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is always to check the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice. An ABI spokesperson said: "Those who have their summer holidays planned in Greece remain covered by their travel insurance, in line with the terms and conditions." She said that would only change if the FCO changed its stance and decided to advise against all travel. In that case, travellers would not be covered if they still decided to go, but they would be entitled to a refund, either from their travel agent or tour operator, or their insurance company. The good news is that Greece continues to be a great bet for bargain hunters, according to the latest Post Office Travel Money resort research. The strength of sterling means families changing £500 into euros will get the equivalent of £65 more to spend compared with a year ago. Prices in resort islands such as Crete and Corfu are down by more than 13% this year anyway which means a meal in Crete with drinks will be almost £6 cheaper, and a bottle of suncream will be £3.32 less than it was last year. The price of holidays in Greece has also dropped.

AT LAST SIGNS OF ACTIVITY Housing development activity is showing signs of improvement, according to Spain’s Ministry of Public Works, which announced last week that the number of building permits granted for residential new construction in Spain reached a total of 15,178 at the end of the first four months of 2015, representing an increase of 29.9% compared to the same period of 2014, when a total of 11,680 permits were authorised. Of the total number of licences granted between January and April, some 10,898 were for apartment blocks (with a year-on-year increase of 38.6%) and 4,269 were for individual family homes, with an annual increase of 12%.
In addition, El Mundo reported that permit applications were made for 11 other buildings not intended for family dwellings, which is two more than in 2014. This significant four-monthly increase comes after permits for new builds ended a run of seven consecutive years of negative figures in 2014, rising by 1.7% to a total of 34,873 permits. This real estate market indicator registered a record low in 2013, of 34,288 permits issued, which represented a decline of 96% since the peak reached in 2006, when a total of 865,561 permits were authorised source Kyero.com

The ultimate trophy home Cars, a plane and your very own vineyard Henfield Lodge is a true collector's country house

By Graham Norwood While 100,000 motor sport enthusiasts are packing the stands at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, down in Sussex it will be a little easier for aviation magnate Henry Lawson to see a Formula One car, however - he can just stay at home and look up. For bolted to the ceiling of the media room of his Edwardian country house is the F1 Benetton driven by Michael Schumacher back in 1993, a year before he won his first of seven world championships. Michael Schumacher's Formula One Benetton Unusual? Of course. But just wait until you look out in the grounds. For that is where Lawson keeps his Sea Harrier, one of the now-retired 12 verticallanding naval aircraft that BBC reporter Bria Yours for £3.95m: The ultimate trophy home Cars, a plane and your very own vineyard Henfield Lodge is a true collector’s country house For that is where Lawson keeps his Sea Harrier, one of the now-retired 12 verticallanding naval aircraft that BBC reporter Brian Hanrahan counted out and counted back to HMS Hermes on that memorable day in the North Atlantic during the Falklands War in 1982. “My wife Lindsay thinks I’m eccentric and threatens to sell these things on eBay, on a buy and collect basis, when I’m away on business” jokes Lawson, who runs a helicopter business close to his home, Henfield Lodge, in the village of Henfield in West Sussex. ESTATE THE MORE IMPORTANT IT IS TO DO SOME ESTATE PLANNING. Question: My wife and myself are resident in Benalmadena. I have the house where we live plus 7 rental properties. (5 in Marbella and 2 in Javea). The total value of these assets is about 2.500.000€. The properties are just in my name. I am concerned about the inheritance tax she will have to pay when I die. In virtue of a contract signed in the u.k. with my ex- business partner I owe him approx. 400,000€. Answer. If you do nothing, your wife will pay approx. 800,000€. Why so much? In principle wives in Andalucia are entitled to inherit tax free if what they receive in total is worth less than 175,000€. The problem is that as she receives more she is only entitled to exemption on the first 16,000€. In principle you can not reduce the value of the properties with the loan as for the tax office to accept that a loan reduces the equity on a property they require that the loan is documented on title deed in the form of a mortgage, with the document tax paid and the deed registered with the property register. Possible solutions? 1. The best solution would be for you and your wife to move your residence to Calpe. (the autonomous region of Valencia has very high exemption rates for inheritance tax in comparison to Andalucia), If you both reside in Calpe for a minimum of three years before you die, inheritance tax would be payable to the Autonomous region of Valencia instead of Andalucia. This would allow you to obtain a discount of 75% of your tax bill with a maximum discount of 150,000€. This would bring your bill down to 650,000€. In addition you should document the loan to your ex-
O Olive
partner on a mortgage deed in Spain and have it registered at the property register. In this way the debt at the moment of death will be deductible taking the tax bill to 492,000€. You did not mention on your email if you have children with your wife. This would provide room for more savings, especially in Calpe (autonomous region of Valencia). If you have for example two children and leave the estate divided between your wife and your two children in 3 equal shares we benefit in various ways, but the most important saving is that each heir would be entitled (because they live in the Valencia region) to a reduction of 75% of their tax bill with a maximum of 150,000€ (so we end up getting 450,000€ in exemptions instead of just 150,000€). If you all lived in Calpe and you left your estate to all three and document the loan correctly they would each pay 42,500€. Their total tax bill would therefore be 127,500€. Conclusion, the total tax bill would be: Do nothing: 800,000€ Stay in Marbella but document your loan correctly: 642,000€ Move from Marbella to Calpe and document your loan correctly: 490,000€ Move to Calpe, document your loan correctly and leave your estate to your wife and two children in equal shares: 127,500€ The above shows a couple of tax saving measures, but other options like dividing the estate further, moving to other autonomous regions of Spain (the autonomous region of Madrid for example) etc. would need to be looked into. For this you need to organise an estate planning session with a firm like ours. Michael Davies. Abogado.

conventional, but no less interesting. The vineyard that produces 1,000 bottles a year The interior boasts a grand entrance hall, no fewer than 10 bedrooms, a purposebuilt temperature-controlled wine cellar and a state-of-the-art swimming pool complex, as well as the library, billiard room, conservatory and drawing room befitting a country pile. All this is just an hour of London and is now on sale through estate agency Knight Frank for £3.95m. But what may tempt a buyer even more than the house and the location are the splendid grounds and the views. The property is situated at the foot of the beautiful South Downs National Park and the 8.5 acres of grounds that accompany the house are largely south-facing and sloped - perfect for the vineyard which the Lawsons have built up over almost 20 years. “We’ve got 800 or so vines and they produce about 1,000 bottles a year, mostly sparkling and mostly rose, bottled close by. We don’t sell it but instead keep it for our friends and families” says Lawson. Like many sellers, the Lawsons are now downsizing - “the kids have grown up, we want a home half this size” - but the family’s next property will still include more than a little eccentricity, as well as the Benetton and the Harrier which are moving as well. “We’re going to do a Kevin McCloud and build a Grand Designs-style house. The living space will be modest but the garage will be huge” promises Lawson, who enters two veteran cars in the London-Brighton run each year and has driven a classic Jaguar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, too. • For sale for £1.85m: the houseboat that looks like a floating grand design • Kevin McCloud’s grandest design It’s going to be what he pledges will be “a cathedral of cars.” In the meantime he has another problem how to get Michael Schumacher’s racer down from that ceiling. source www. thetelegraph.co.uk

The Night of San Paco, El Loco
The second of July is ‘La Noche de San Paco, El Loco’ in Alqueria. Just why one of Loco Paco’s ancestors was canonised is an unanswered question. According to the High Church of Alqueria of which there are but three members, a potential saint must perform at least two miracles. Knowing the date is a marvel for anyone of Paco’s bloodline, tying shoelaces unaided falls into the miracle category while walking and talking simultaneously is something they can only aspire to. Whatever the reasons, which are now shrouded in the mists of time the celebration was to take place as usual beginning with the setting of the sun. The evening starts with the veneration of Paco who is carried shoulder high to the Bar La Casa Devante. Paco is then plied with free beer and treated to a lapdance performed by Dolores Plumpthigh. At this point Paco usually passes out, partly due to his intolerance to alcohol and partly from the effects of Dolores’s weight upon his lower abdomen. The sight of the inert Paco raises a cheer among onlookers and signals the start of the serious festivities. Music is supplied by Alfonso Largepart playing the ‘Malruido’, a traditional Alquerian instrument. Looking suspiciously like a Scottish bagpipe the sound is said to resemble the laughter of angels. While this cannot be disputed due to lack of witnesses others say it is more reminiscent of the sound made by an Alquerian Kunekune Pig undergoing castration. Three-toed Río Verde Newts
are fried over charcoal and consumed with gusto. It is only during July that the Newt is edible at other times they cause blindness, foot-rot and autonomy of the bowels. Girls of marriageable age or those just looking for a good time place a sprig of Remitroot in their cleavage, Manuela uses the whole branch. Remitroot based alcohol is traditionally drunk in all its various forms from a vessel called a ‘Grogenswallow’. This singular and convoluted piece of glassware resembles the large intestine of the yak and doubles as an effective weapon for use in fist fights which traditionally beak out at the end of the evening. Large exaggerated, bulbous and hideous statues are constructed by the opposing barrios and paraded through the streets of Alqueria. As the church clock strikes twelve these obscene and monstrous effigies are burnt, at last year’s event someone tried to set fire to Rodriquez by mistake. The streets of Alqueria are packed for this celebration so be warned, arrive early and bring your own Grogenswallow.

Chicken and Chips, Part 1
Before we had had time to park our posteriors the waiter was upon is. ‘To drink?’ Our order was but seconds old when the drinks arrived. ‘To eat? You must eat, you can not sit at this table unless you eat.’ He hovered menacingly over us, pad and pen at the ready. ‘Can you give us a minute?’ Pete asked. It was 12.10, and we had to be at the coach pick-up point 30 minutes distant at 3.00, so we had over 2 hours, plenty of time for a Menu del Dia. The waiter turned on his heel and left while we turned over the menu and read. At that moment we must have slipped into an alternative Universe and become invisible and inaudible, because the waiter took orders and brought food and drink to every other table except ours despite our best and politest efforts to engage his attention. At 1.00 I got up and accosted him directly. ‘Menu del Dia’ I said. ‘I’ll have soup, and my husband will have …..’ ‘That is not possible.’ He interrupted. ‘The Menu del Dia is for one person, not to share.’ He put his pad back in his pocket and squared his chin. I narrowed my eyes. ‘Fine. I’ll have the Menu del Dia, and my husband will have a coffee.’ The unspoken subtext was Don’t you square your chin at me, especially when you’ve just spent 50 minutes ignoring me – you want awkward, I’ll give you awkward. The unspoken reply was I’ll burn

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk this restaurant to the ground rather than let you share a Menu del Dia, because I know that is what you are going to do. He ground his teeth ever so slightly and departed, oozing displeasure from every pore. Seconds later he returned. ‘We have no soup.’ He announced gleefully and with finality. He did not add Gotcha, but he certainly thought it. Did I believe him? No, but I smiled sweetly. Nothing derails an argument, or is more irritating than a sweet smile. ‘Never mind. We’ll have two portions of chicken and chips instead.’ I improvised, as two portions of chicken and chips were carried by the kitchen girl to the adjacent table. He vacillated, searching every recess of his mind for some reason why we couldn’t have chicken and chips. None occurred to him, so he glared at me and left with bad grace. Will we get our chicken and chips? Find out next week!

Almanzora Charitable Theatre
The actors and production crew of Almanzora Charitable Theatre provided another 3 nights of entertainment at “La Parrilla”, Albox in the middle of May. The 3 plays that were performed gave audiences a diverse programme that stretched from the curious discovery of a body found buried upright on a beach to the p.a. who finds that her rich, eccentric, gay boss is rather more to her liking than a straight husband. Then finally, a couple in the throes of a divorce and in the midst of a Spanish fiesta find circumstances draw them together again. This last show allowed the group to raise € 200 for the A.U.A.N. to assist them in their work to regularise the property situation in our area. In the last 2 and a half years A.C.T. has managed to raise € 2,500 for various groups and we hope that our patrons and those who have not yet patronised us will come to see our next show so that we can continue to assist good causes with donations in the future.

Luvvies Dinner Ladies All Served Up!
A great deal of effort by a great many people paid off on the weekend of 26 – 28 June at the Teatro Pedro Gilabert in Arboleas. The Luvvies production of Dinner Ladies drew very full audiences on every day over the three days, proving that the hard work put in by the Producer, Jakki Higginbotham, the back stage boys, and of course, the cast, had been worth all the toil. This well-known and loved television sit-com was expertly transferred to the stage by John and Elaine Skinner, who must be justly proud that their efforts were met with such enthusiasm by the audience. Each member of the cast gave their character an individual personality with their own idiosyncrasies and foibles; they made the characters their own, yet gelled together throughout the show to create a well-rounded, balanced performance. Now the Luvvies are looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet – but not for long! Their next production, The Vicar of Dibley, will be on the boards this autumn. If you have a secret fancy to tread the boards yourself, or have any (very essential) back-stage skills, phone 634 346 309, or contact The Luvvies at their website, info@theluvvies. com for more information.

Cabrera Music Club
Last year I asked the Cabrera Social Committee to ask if there were musicians in the area who would want to join in to make music. Though this did not lead to anything regarding playing music, some people did say that they would love to hear more live music in Cabrera. This year we have started a new venture to see if live music is really wanted here. We want to bring variation of music that we feel is of a good quality and also, where possible, a bit different to the norm. The challenge started with booking an internationally famous band called “Potato Head” because they are excellent musicians and also entertainers. As the band is a 6 piece and needs some room, and audience size/unpredictability of the weather, we chose to hold this at Hostal Rural. We want to try to use Cabrera as a venue for music and so fitted in 3 musicians to start the venture on April 25th. They were Pamela Lund, latin/jazz singer, Marcelo Gervasi guitarist and Vitor Belmonte who is an international Flamenco guitarist. Again in Cabrera , on May 31st, we had The De Levie Quartet, a 4 piece band of Guitar, Saxophone, Double bass and Drums who invited Lady Ellen to come and sing with them, as many local people love her amazing voice. We are a non-profit making venture and only want to plough back any excess (and loss) into future events, so please support us if this is what you want, and let us know your musical preferences for future musical events, be it classical, light music or jazz. Never been done in Cabrera before !!!! We have arranged, by popular demand, a classical “String Quartet” concert evening on Tuesday July 14th. Through our connections we have met with a well renowned international violinist, conductor and composer Mr Michael Thomas. Michael started the world famous “Brodsky Quartet” with his sister and 2 friends in 1972 and grew to become world famous. In 1999 he left the quartet to move to Seville with his Spanish wife and children to pursue his conducting career. He has co-composed with Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney and other well known artists, and is the conductor of the Orquesta Betica de Camara, Orquesta Ciudad de Almeria, and the Joven Orquesta del sur de España. We have arranged for him to form a quartet to play at Los Pastores, and he has chosen other top musicians to accompany him, namely José Angel Vélez Gonzales (violin 2) who is the leader of Orquesta Ciudad de Almeria and studied at the Royal Academy of Music London, Clara García (Viola) with her sister Paloma García (cello) both studied at the Trinity College of Music in London. Though these musicians are coming from as far as Seville and Alicante, they will be playing as “Quarteto OCAL”. They will be playing the “Dvorak American Quartet” and “Schubert´s Rosamunde” and there will then be approximately a 20 minute break between pieces These are both very popular pieces for a string quartet and this should be an exceptional night. As this will be a concert situation, there will be Cava and canapes served at 7.00pm included in the entry price of 18 euros. Concert starts at 8.00pm. Though drinks will be available in the interlude and can be preordered by early arrivals, we are only allowing meals to be served after the completion of the concert at approximately 9.30. Please support us in this special event as we attempt to please all tastes.

These can be good value, too, especially the self-service places, but their emphasis is more northern European and the light snack-meals served tend to be dull. Food here often comes in the form of a plato combinado – literally a combined plate – which will be something like egg and chips or calamares and salad (or occasionally a weird combination like steak and a piece of fish), often with bread and a drink included. This will generally cost in the region of
Restaurant Dining Once again, there’s a multitude of distinctions. You can sit down and have a full meal in a comedor , a cafetería , a restaurante or a marisquería – all in addition to the more foodoriented bars. Comedores are the places to seek out if your main criteria are price and quantity. Sometimes you will see them attached to a bar (often in a room behind), or as the dining room of a hostal or pensión , but as often as not they’re virtually unmarked and discovered only if you pass an open door. Since they’re essentially workers’ cafés they tend to serve more substantial meals at lunchtime than in the evenings (when they may be closed altogether). When you can find them – the tradition, with its family-run business and marginal wages, is on the way out – you’ll probably pay around 4.50 to 8.00 Euros for a menu del dia, cubierto or menu de la casa , all of which mean the same – a complete meal of three courses, usually with bread, wine and

dessert included. The highway equivalent of comedores are ventas which you’ll be extremely glad of if you’re doing much travelling by road. These roadside inns dotted along the highways between towns and cities have been serving Spanish fare for hundreds of years, and the best ventas are wonderful places to get tasty country cooking at bargain prices. Again the menu del dia is the one to go for and the best places usually have quite a gathering of lorries in their car park, shrewd long-distance truck drivers being among the best customers. Replacing comedores to some extent are cafeterías, which the local authorities grade from one to three cups (the ratings, as with restaurants, seem to be based on facilities offered rather than the quality of the food).

Alien birds gargantuan/Spewed firesent seagulls/Scattering to hover lowChilling their white underbellies/On the grey, choppy waves. In a Village Sky.1941. Joy Lennick makes it clear that her temporary stay on Mountain Hare and its ominous coal slag, looking down on Merthyr Tydfil was a treasured time in spite of being separated from her family. Her childhood memories were ones of kindness, curiosity and hostility: “as the years multiply, it seems to spin like a giddying, gaudily colourful tin top from my childhood.” The 1930s were eventful years probably for all the wrong reasons. Regarded as the grimmest years since the end of WW1 “unwept, unhonoured and unsung” it is a naive statement to say that this was a wonderful time to be born. It wasn’t. Remember the Hindenberg disaster, Hitler as German Chancellor, the Japanese invasion of China or the Spanish Civil War, an unending list of disasters. Coming up to the late thirties Dagenham in Essex was still considered to be “pretty in places” with a few thatched cottages, a friendly and peaceful environment although that was soon to change. The slaughterhouse was a blot on the landscape, a sharp contrast and through the innocence of the child, “War was a foreign country and just a three lettered word.” It meant nothing to the likes of Joy Lennick, too young to feel threatened by an unknown entity. Joy was the eldest child of three: Bryan Charles and Terence John were her two younger brothers followed later by Royce Kenneth. When father Charles was on “short hours” financially it was tough. Shredded wheat box soles were fitted into their shoes and mother, Lila had to pawn her engagement ring. In contrast to their grandparents who had almost starved to death during the Great Depression Joy’s family weren’t so destitute. Her memoirs refer to the “Topsy-turvy” world and the “simplicity of our childhood threatened by an unknown, mysterious something.” Of course war was looming. On 9th September 1939, Lila and the three children went to Merthyr Tydfil, its pastoral beauty eroded through coal mining and iron ore. Described through the eyes of a child as a “new, slightly

So, a couple of weeks ago, I found myself reading an extract from the letter written by St Paul to Christians living in Rome, in which he advises first that “Governors are God’s ministers for good” (pretty incredible when you think how successive Caesars were treating Christians at the time) and then continues with the instruction that they should “owe no one anything except to love each other”. Now of course that sounds easy doesn’t it; but we often have a slightly one-sided view of love, reserved for those close to us, and usually with quite a bit of self-interest included. St Paul, on the other hand explains that we should love everyone, whether we like them or not, including Politicians, Refugees, Criminals, yes and even Terrorists, trying our best, however evil their actions may seem, to understand their viewpoint and desiring the best for them (which may, of course be quite different from what they’d want for themselves), regardless of any potential cost or disadvantage to self. And of course Jesus is the perfect example of this sort of love. He cared deeply for everyone, including his enemies and
even Judas, who betrayed him. He accepted, even a pretty corrupt regime, advising his followers to “give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, yet counted zealots as well as social outcasts, prostitutes and Government officials among his circle of friends. And in spite of all the rumours, the gossip, the public attack and ridicule, we never hear of him feeling offended or ‘hurt’ by anything anyone said or did to him. How different is my concept of love! When I judge or get annoyed with others, I demonstrate my lack of love. When someone hurts my feelings, causing some inner resentment, I’m clearly not displaying true Christian love. It’s a tough call, but how much better if only we could all love as St Paul urged. two silver Mercedes tracked the two white Williams to the first pit-stop period. Hamilton was brought in first, on lap 19, and the so-called ‘undercut’ worked perfectly as he produced what Williams technical chief Pat Symonds called a “stunning” in-lap. A quick pit stop and a strong first lap out of the pits meant that when Massa and Rosberg pitted on the next lap Hamilton passed them before they were back out the circuit. Rosberg came oh-soclose to beating Massa out - the two cars were side by side as they went down the pits, but Massa had the inside line for the corner where the pit lane rejoins the track and held on to second. Even worse for Rosberg, when Bottas stopped on the next lap, the Finn rejoined ahead of the Mercedes and although Rosberg overtook him into Turn Four, Bottas got straight back in front through the kink at Turn Five. Rosberg stayed stuck in fourth place until lap 36 of 52 when light rain began to fall. At first, it hit only the northern part of the track at Luffield, Woodcote and Copse corners but a wobble from Bottas at Copse gave Rosberg the chance he needed and he took third, and then a couple of laps later moved into second past Massa at Turn Three. The rain, which stopped and then returned with greater intensity over the whole of the track, was bad news for Williams, both of whose cars were passed by Vettel as the teams juggled with tyre choices in the intermittent rain at the end of the race. It was an unexpected surprise for Ferrari at the end of one of their least competitive races of the season. bbcsport

the man who saved barcelona
London Olympic legacy ‘a failure’ The opportunity for the London Olympics to inspire a generation of children to participate in sport has been squandered, Tessa Jowell has said. The former Olympics minister, who is standing to be Labour’s candidate for London mayor, blamed her “wicked and negligent successors” in government. But she said the regeneration of east London, a key pledge, was a success. The government said 1.4 million more people were playing sport each week than when London’s Olympic bid was won. But a spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said more needed to be done to attract people from all backgrounds. ‘Wasted opportunity’ Dame Tessa’s comments come exactly 10 years after London was awarded the Games in 2005. She was Olympics minister when the decision was announced. She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “My particular concern is that the second legacy promise was to transform a generation of young people through sport. “Actually children in school now are playing less sport than they were in 2009. “That’s why it is a wasted opportunity.” A Youth Sport Trust survey of 1,392 primary schools in 2013/14 found that the average number of minutes children spent taking part in PE in a typical week was 102 for Key Stage 1 and 114 for Key Stage 2. This was down from 126 minutes for Key Stage 1 and 127 minutes for Key Stage 2 in the charity’s 2009/10 survey. Dame Tessa criticised the
government’s decision to cut funding for school sport. In 2010, £162m of ring-fenced funding for the national School Sport Partnerships (SSPs) was abolished. “We had a model of organisation that was the envy of so many other sporting countries around the world, that provided the organisational framework to make sure that the matches were organised, notes went home so parents knew when their kids were coming home,” she said. “That structure of organisation has been dismantled. And the evidence is that if you don’t tell schools that the money for sport is dedicated to sport, it’s spent on other things.” The former MP for Dulwich and West Norwood told the Guardian that “the most wicked and negligent part of it was winding up school sport partnerships”. There are 1.4 million more people playing sport each week than when the Olympic bid was won Department for Culture, Media and Sport She added: “I hope this is a huge stain on their consciences.” Lord Sebastian Coe, who was chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, wrote in the Daily Telegraph: “Pre-2005 there is little doubt sport participation was declining and had been for a long time, particularly amongst young people. “Since bidding for the Games, that trend has reversed.” Sir Keith Mills, who was on the organising committee for the London Olympics, told the BBC the government had to do more to encourage school sport. A plaque has been unveiled in Dublin in recognition of an Irishman who saved Barcelona FC during the Spanish Civil War. The Irishman - Patrick O’Connell - was manager of Barcelona in the 1930s played a major and there is no doubt that he kept the club alive. Born in 1887, Pat played for Belfast Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City and Manchester United as well as his country, who he skippered on several occasions, including Ireland’s Home International Championship triumph for the first time in 1914. After the Great War he had first spell in football management when he took charge of non-League side North Washington. He later managed Racing Santander, here in Spain, before moving to Real Betis whom he guided to their only La Liga title in 1935. He was then appointed manager at Barcelona in readiness for the 193536 season by the club’s President Josep Sunyol, who tragically was assassinated by General Franco’s troops in early August 1936. With the military conflict at its height, the offer for Barcelona to tour Mexico in 1937 was gratefully accepted and Pat elected to take a squad of 16 players with him. Surprisingly, only manager Pat and four players chose to return to Spain. But what also returned was a considerable kitty as the tour had generated almost 13,000 US dollars profit, which cleared Barcelona’s debts after it was deposited into a French bank account to prevent Franco stealing it! The tour to South America had no doubt saved Barcelona football club… thanks for sure to Pat O’Connell. Little wonder then that he

is often referred to as ‘the saviour of FC Barcelona’. The 2015 European Champions sent the club’s ambassador, former Spurs striker Steve Archibald, over to Dublin to officially unveil the plaque on the 5th June at Pat’s former home in Fitzroy Avenue next to Croke Park. This followed a major which took place the previous evening at Dublin’s Mansion House, at which a fellow football historian of mine, Mark Metcalf, was one of the speakers. Meanwhile, two further events are being organised during the summer…. in Belfast in August and near an unmarked grave in a cemetery in North London. There are further plans for a bust of Pat to go on display at the Nou Camp and for a book to be published on his remarkable life. All the work has been made possible by the fundraising efforts of the Patrick O’Connell Memorial Fund. If you wish to donate please go to www.pocfund.com by Tony Matthews

England finish third in the Women’s World Cup Fara Williams’s extra-time penalty ensured England beat Germany for the first time in 31 years to finish third at the Women’s World Cup. The performance was the second best by an England team following the 1966 win by the men’s side and eclipsed the 1990 men’s team, who finished fourth in Italy. The Lionesses had not beaten two-time World Cup winners Germany in 20 attempts but they more than matched their opponents and won the spot-kick in the second period of extra-time after substitute Lianne Sanderson was brought down by Tabea Kemme. Williams, who is England’s record cap holder and was homeless at one point in her England career, beat retiring German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer for her third penalty of the tournament. It brought to a close a superb campaign for England, who finished as the top European nation and are now set to climb from sixth in the world rankings after a tournament during which they generated strong and well-deserved support at home. However, they were thankful for a glaring miss from Bianca Schmidt four minutes from the end as they held on to their slender lead. The result was tribute to the progress that England have made under Mark Sampson after the Welshman took over 18 months ago. It also put a positive spin on their campaign after the cruel 2-1 semi-final defeat following Laura Bassett’s injury-time own goal against Japan. The team are set to receive an additional £2,000 for winning the bronze medal, taking their World Cup bonus payments to £14,000. Sampson’s education as England head coach has now come full circle,
following a 3-0 defeat by the eight-time European champions last November. This time the 32-yearold Sampson chose to be more conservative in his tactical approach and it paid off as his team lined up with three centre-backs, which included Jo Potter alongside Steph Houghton and Bassett, who showed no hangover from her semi-final heartache. But the formation allowed space in front of the defence and the European champions could have scored three times in the first 10 minutes, with tournament top scorer Celia Sasic wasting a great chance before the impressive Houghton cleared off the line. During an open start to the game, Houghton had the best opening of the first half but mistimed her shot from seven yards. There was also a strong penalty appeal as Kemme appeared to block Potter’s shot with her hand. In her last World Cup game in charge, German coach Silvia Neid became frustrated with England’s aggressive approach, but it ensured the match remained goalless at the break. Having named an under-strength side, Neid brought on Melanie Leupolz to add more mettle to the German midfield and they began to create the better chances. Bardsley saved Sara Daebritz’s header before Houghton blocked Lena Petermann’s close-range shot. But the introduction of Eniola Aluko, who had not played since England’s second game against Mexico, swung the game back in England’s favour and she laid on a pass to Jill Scott, who wasted a great opportunity with 13 minutes remaining. The Lionesses were buoyed going into extra-time and their determination to not bow down to a world superpower of women’s football helped create the penalty, which led to joyous scenes at the final whistle as a superb campaign ended on a high. Urcal Golf Society returned to Aguilon golf course for its latest match to play an individual event for the Amber Sun Cup. Aguilon must be the best course in the locality not only for condition but also for value and as always we were made to feel very welcome by all the staff. The weather was extremely hot as it has been for several weeks and this could have been the only reason for the extremely low scores on the day. Dave Edmonds making one of his all to rare appearances with the society due to work commitments played extremely well to take the Amber Sun Cup, his first victory of the year with 30 points. Steve Fear taking second place one point behind with Stan Whitty some distance away in third place with 25 points. The nearest the pin prizes were won by Captain Steve Dodd on hole number eight with Garry Funnell taking the honour
on the seventeenth. Billy Handy took the prize for nearest the pin in two shots on the eleventh hole. Urcal Golf Society play every two weeks on a Saturday and are always happy to welcome new members and guests, anyone wishing to join our friendly society

JOE ROOT – STAR BATSMAN By Tony Matthews
The Sheffield-born Yorkshire and England batsman and occasional spin bowler, nicknamed ‘Rootay’ is 24 years of age and is already a world class cricketer. Talking publicly during a recent short break here in Spain, at the Desert Springs golf and sports complex, J o e admitted that he’s enjoying his cricket more than ever these days... and is certainly looking forward to the Ashes Series with the Aussies. Said Vaughan: “He’s still very young and I believe he will become one of the world’s greatest-ever run-makers” said former England captain Michael Vaughan. Joe played in his first Test Match for England in the 2012 series in India (becoming the 655th player to star for his country) and made his ODI and T20 International debuts on the same tour, before scoring his maiden Test century on his home ground of Headingly, Leeds, the following spring against New Zealand. Joe had played his first game for Yorkshire in a second XI game in July 2007, scoring 57 and putting on 133 for the first wicket with another future England batsman Adam Lyth. He continued to represent his county’s Academy side and was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ when Yorkshire won the Pro-Arch Trophy in Abu Dhabi. After success at second team level, Joe played in Yorkshire’s first XI in a Pro-40 match against Essex, top-scoring with 63 in his side’s total of 187-7. Although his half-century could not inspire his team to victory, Joe described his debut as a “dream come true”. After another ‘Man of the Series’
performance, this time on England U19 duty in Bangladesh, Joe signed a three-year professional contract with Yorkshire. “This made my day” he enthused. Selected for the U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, he made an unbeaten 70 in a victory over Hong Kong as England progressed to the quarter finals before being eliminated by the West Indies. Later that winter, Joe was sent to the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide, South Australia, to fine tune his game. And it worked wonders for him, with several older and more established batsman and, indeed, bowlers, praising his undoubted talent. Since then things have gone from good and great for Joe! Before the current Test Series against Australia (which started on the 8th of July at Cardiff) he had scored over 13,600 first-class runs (2,273 in Tests alone). His top score was 236 for Yorkshire against Derbyshire in May 2013 and his best Test knock was 200 not out against Sri Lanka at Lords in June 204. To date Joe has registered 32 centuries and 57 fifties. He has taken 76 wickets (avg. 48.75) and he has now played in 247 cricket matches for county and country... and there will be many more games to follow for Joe Root – super batter from the Steel City of Sheffield.
