Anonymous artist ‘decorates’ bins in northern village

A VILLAGE in La Rioja woke up one morning this week to find its 18 rubbish and recycling banks painted in abstract colours, shapes and pictures by an anonymous overnight artist.

Photos of the bins have gone viral since then and, although the regional refuse collection board wants to replace them and fine whoever did it, residents want them left as they are.

Wine-bottle labels in Braille

A WINE merchant in western Spain has printed its bottle labels in Braille so that blind consumers can find out about what they are drinking.

The bodega, or wine producer La Pelina in Puebla de Sancho Pérez, in the land-locked region of Extremadura has gained an award from the national blind association ONCE for its clever initiative.

Although Braille wine labels have been used at La Pelina for about two years, the family firm has only just seen the fruits of its labour: early last month, a blind customer visited the store and was 'delighted' to be able to read what was on the bottles, says current front man Bonifacio Fernández.

The feedback from the customer in question was that the 'translation' was 'perfect' and very easy to read.

The 53-year-old man was gored six times by a fighting bull during a festival in his hometown of Blanca in Spain’s southern region of Murcia.

Rafael Ibáñez Miñano, who sold lottery tickets for the ONCE organization attempted to climb out of the way of the bull as it charged towards him but slipped off the barrier onto its horns.

After repeated gorings he lay crumpled in the street for several seconds before the bull returned and charged into him again.

He died overnight after receiving “six gorings in different parts of his body, including one that severed his femoral

artery,” said medical staff at the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia.

It is the sixth goring fatality of the summer. Last Sunday a man died when he was fatally gored while filming footage with his mobile phone during a bull run.

The week before an 89-year-old spectator was gored to death while watching the bull run from behind a barrier.

Two others died during a week of festivities in June and a French tourist was gored to death in July.

A scheme to send British police officers to patrol the streets of two of Spain’s most notorious resorts in a bid to control the worst of British holiday behaviour may have sounded like a good idea on paper.

Locals have had enough of drunken misbehaving tourists giving the island a bad name, to say nothing of the authorities who find their police forces and health service overstretched clearing up the aftermath of a night on the tiles. Local authorities in Calvia, the council responsible for Magaluf, have done their best to curb excessive behaviour introducing a raft of bylaws to clean up the resort, imposing fines on street drinking, inappropriate sexual behaviour, and that unfathomable of crazes, throwing oneself off a balcony. The resort hopes one day to shed its nickname of ‘shagaluf’ and instead welcome wholesome family fun.

And inviting a British police team to come and patrol the streets alongside their Spanish counterparts to see exactly what sort of strife their holidaymaking compatriots cause was all part of plan.

Enter Sergeant Brett Williams and PC Martina Anderson of West Midlands Police, who flew out to Mallorca to brave the unforgiving Spanish sun in uniforms more suited to drizzly Blighty. It all began positively on Monday with plenty of media hype about British bobbies on the beat.

But as it emerged that they would only be patrolling during the subdued daylight hours, when most revelers were sleeping off the excesses of their nighttime antics,

the criticism was quick to flow. The British tabloid press wasted no time in seizing on an opportunity to highlight domestic policing failures linking unsolved burglaries across Britain to the pair of officers having a jolly time in the sun.

Even if we do presume that the West Midlands sent two of their finest to work alongside the Guardia Civil, burdening just two police officers with all the unsolved crimes in Britain seems rather unfair.

That they then fell under criticism for ‘complaining about the heat’, ‘posing for selfies’, ‘taking a dip in the hotel pool’ and finally ‘getting sozzled’ after PC Anderson naively posted an update on facebook - only for it to appear on the Daily Mail - stating “if you can’t beat them, join them” seems particularly harsh. Wouldn’t we all do the same? It isn’t the first operation of its kind in Spain. Visiting police from France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Morocco have taken part in similar initiatives and probably didn’t make headlines doing so. At the very least it has been an exercise to win over hearts and minds in the resort, an opportunity to show solidarity with their Spanish colleagues and hopefully a chance to establish lasting links between forces.

Their visit has served to highlight that the sort of outrageous and sometimes criminal behaviour that has become synonymous with Magaluf is not being tolerated, by the Spanish authorities or the British. thelocal

Spanish minister grilled over Rato meeting

Spain’s interior minister suffered a grilling from the opposition on Friday over his controversial decision to receive the disgraced former IMF chief Rodrigo Rato in his office last month. Mr Rato, who is also a former finance minister and deputy prime minister, is at the centre of several fraud inquiries.

Reports of the meeting have already inflicted public embarrassment on Jorge Fernández Díaz, who has struggled to explain why the gathering took place and what the two men discussed. In an initial response this week, the interior ministry insisted the meeting was personal, and that the two men did not speak about any of the judicial probes directed at Mr Rato.

In parliament on Friday, Mr Fernández Díaz offered a slightly different version, revealing that Mr Rato had requested a meeting to discuss threats made against him on social media. “It was my duty to attend to him,” the minister told lawmakers. “Rato met with me because of his personal security.”

But opposition lawmakers dismissed the minister’s explanation as “pathetic” and “shameful”, arguing that private individuals threatened on social media are not normally received by the interior minister in person. They also lashed out at Mr Fernández Díaz’s claim that

the meeting had been “transparent”, pointing out that it only came to light thanks to reports in the Spanish media.

Over the past two years, ministers and leaders of the ruling Popular party have largely sought to avoid the company of Mr Rato, who has become a public symbol of the excesses and maladministration that dragged Spain into its post-2007 crisis.

As chairman of Bankia, Mr Rato presided over the near-collapse of one of the largest banks in Spain. An amalgamation of seven regional banks, Bankia went on to absorb more than €22bn in public aid and produced the largest annual loss in Spanish corporate history — €19.2bn.

The former IMF chief has been declared a formal suspect in two fraud investigations relating to his time at Bankia. He was also briefly arrested this year in connection with an investigation into possible tax fraud.

On Friday Spain’s opposition Socialists again called for the minister’s resignation over the Rato affair. The party has also lodged a formal complaint with the public prosecution affair, alleging that Mr Fernández Díaz may have perverted the course of justice. http://www.ft.com

Eurozone approves huge new Greek bailout

Earlier Friday, Greek lawmakers passed the accord following a bitter all-night debate on the conditions demanded by Athens’ creditors which could alter many aspects of daily life.

“New loans of up to 86 billion euros ($96 billion) will be made available over the next three years to Greece,” the European Commission said after six hours of talks in Brussels. Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said six months of negotiations with the leftwing government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras -- who won office in January opposed to the creditors’ demands -- had been difficult and testing. “Together, we have looked into the abyss. But today, I am glad to say that all sides have respected their commitments. Greece is living up to its ambitious reform commitments,” Juncker said in a statement.

“The message of today’s (meeting) is loud and clear: on this basis, Greece is and will irreversibly remain a member of the euro area.” A first disbursement for Greece next week will total 13 billion euros, helping cover a debt payment to the European Central Bank due on August 20.

Tsipras rode to power in January on a wave of popular anger against the tax hikes, spending cuts and reforms demanded by creditors in exchange for two previous bailouts costing 240 billion euros. He said this austerity medicine had only damaged, not helped, an economy which emerged from six years of brutal recession in 2014. A tired Euclid Tsakalotos, the

Greek finance minister, emerged from Friday’s meeting saying it was now up to his compatriots to forge ahead.

“Let’s hope that the Greek people will be able to make the best of this deal, to make (the) best of the reforms and the ability to reform and mitigate any negative consequences that surely exist within it,” Tsakalotos said in a statement.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble of Germany, Europe’s effective paymaster who has also been a hard taskmaster on the bailout, said “we want to seize this chance” to revive Greece’s economy.

“We must remain at the same time cautious, because naturally it concerns large sums made available,” he told a press conference. Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who chaired the Eurogoup meeting, said ministers “welcomed the wide scope of policy measures (in the accord) which if implemented with determination will address the main challenges facing the Greek economy”.

“We are confident that decisive and swift as possible implementation … will allow the Greek economy to return to a sustainable growth path based on sound public finances, enhanced competitiveness, high employment and financial stability,” he added.

“The Eurogroup considers the continued programme involvement of the IMF as indispensable,” he said in a statement.

THREE farmers who 'accidentally' ploughed a field known to contain a major archaeological dig could face hefty fines for not having sought permission from the regional government of Andalucía, southern Spain, in advance.

The site in Ategua (Córdoba province) held remains dating back to the year 200 AD at the height of the Roman era, and some may be older still.

Foundation stones, fragments of columns, shards of ceramic pottery, the remains of an exterior wall and opus signinum or Roman symbols lay in abundance in the dig, and the vast majority have been broken after the field was ploughed.

The Roman dig was declared an official Historical and Artistic Monument in 1982 and, by dint of the

Spanish Historical Heritage law, bears the stamp of of Cultural Asset (BIC, or Bien de Interés Cultural).

It stands on a plot of land which is privately-owned, but still requires a series of permits and licences from the regional government before any type of alterations of the terrain, however minor, are effected.

None of the three agricultural workers held any such permit, and were reported by anonymous residents from the village of Santa Cruz, which the Ategua archaeological site belongs to.

They informed the Friends of Ategua Cultural Association when they saw what was happening, and its leaders contacted authorities. thinkspain.com

British boy drowns in swimming pool at Spanish resort

A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a swimming pool during a family holiday at a resort in southern Spain.

He is thought to have been playing with other children at a house in Mijas, on the Costa del Sol, when he fell into the pool.

Emergency services were called to the property on Sunday evening but he could not be saved.

The Foreign Office confirmed the death and said it was offering support to the child’s family.

A spokesman for local authority Ayuntamiento de Mijas said there were 20 people at the property when the child died at the Mijas Golf resort in Las Lagunas, Mijas.

It is understood his parents had been entertaining friends at their rented

holiday apartment when the accident happened.

A 15-year-old boy then sounded the alarm, according to Spanish newspaper Diario Sur. The four-year-old died at about 21:00 local time (20:00 BST).

A post-mortem examination was due to take place in Malaga on Monday.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Spain on 16 August.

“We are in contact with local authorities and have provided the family with advice on bereavement abroad, including on repatriation.” http://www.bbc.com/

Bangkok bomb: Deadly blast rocks Thailand capital

A bomb has exploded close to a shrine in the centre of the Thai capital, Bangkok, police say.

Local reports suggest at least 12 people have died and at least 20 more have been injured.

The BBC’s Jonathan Head, who is at the scene, says there is a huge amount of chaos, with body parts scattered everywhere.

The attack took place close to the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok’s central Chidlom district.

The explosion occurred at about 19:00 local time (12:00 GMT).

No-one has yet said they carried out the attack.

Some reports said foreign tourists may have been among the casualties.

The Bangkok Post quotes police as saying at least one more bomb has been made safe by officers in the Ratchaprasong area.

Our correspondent says this is a very well-known shrine in the centre of Bangkok, next to a five-star hotel.

He says people around the shrine were hit by the full force of the blast.

There were burnt motorbikes on the main road, with paramedics and police trying to treat the injured, he says.

One bystander, Alessandro Ursic, told the BBC: “When I arrived they had already cleared the bodies from the ground outside the Erawan shrine but there were and there are still pieces of human flesh strewn around the

Top Tourist Attractions in Spain Spain is a surprise to those who have the image of having to fight for towel

space at one of its crowded beaches or sipping sangria while watching a bull fight or flamenco. From the ancient monuments left by the Romans and Moors, the medieval castles of the interior, the white villages in inland Andalucía or the vibrant cities of Barcelona and Madrid, there is a great mixture of cultural attractions in Spain.

The landscape varies just as widely. The evergreen estuaries of Galicia could hardly be more different from the deserts of Almería or the rugged mountains of the Sierra Nevada. And then there are the countless glittering beaches that dot the Spanish coast. Although busy in summer even along the coast of the big tourist Costas some enjoyable beaches can easily be found.

The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) of Madrid is the official residence of the King of Spain although it is only used for state ceremonies. The Royal Palace was built between 1738 to 1755 and King Carlos III took up residence in the palace in 1764.

La Concha Protected from strong winds by steep cliffs and islands, La Concha in San Sebastian is said by many to be one of the best city beaches in Europe, let alone Spain. Here you can go surfing, walk along the promenade in search of good restaurants and enjoy the beautiful views of the beach.

The Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the best-preserved monuments left by the Romans in Spain. The ancient aqueduct carries water 16 km (10 miles) from the Frío River to Segovia and was built of some 24,000 massive granite blocks without the use of astian mortar. Probably constructed around 50 AD it still provided water to the city in the 20th La Concha - San Seb century.

The Mezquita (Spanish for “Mosque”) of Cordoba is a fascinating building famous for the forest of pillars Cuenca and arches inside the main hall. The site was originally a Roman temple, then a Visigothic church, before the Umayyad Moors The Mezquita built the Mezquita.

The Bowen Technique

Bowen technique? What's that?

Established in the 50's it is now hailed as a treatment that works quickly and effectively on many different conditions. So much so that it is being adopted by practitioners for athletes at the Olympic Games.

As the first Bowen practitioner in Almeria Kim Hunter – known as The Health Hunter - has been practising for many years in the UK and now works in Almerìa.

I visited her with sudden and unexpected chronic knee pain - 7 knee operations, no patellas - I was a lost cause. From going up the stairs on my bum during the week of incapacity I was miraculously better – after one treatment I have never had twinge and am able to continue with martial arts.

Bowen therapy was established in Australia in the fifties. The human body is made of connective tissues that are all linked. Therapists use fingers and thumbs to do very gentle rolling movements and gradually the muscles, ligaments and general energy points are realigned.

Kim Hunter, an energetic twinkly eyed Scot is an immediately relaxing person to be around. I laid on the treatment couch and Kim began making small gentle moves with her fingers on my back. She then disappeared for a couple of minutes, reappeared and continued on other parts of my body before disappearing again.

This I learned is part of the process, giving the muscles and the brain time to realign. Gradually I was floating away – no pain and very relaxed. Now, five months later I’m still without pain and am very grateful.

Coventry University UK have recently done research that showed that 116 students could touch their toes or get significantly closer after just a single Bowen treatment. So what you may ask – but actually the ability to touch your toes is a good indication of lower back health and half the population is unable to do it. The study shows that the gentle manipulation of muscles and tendons can increase hamstring flexibility and relieves lower back problems.

Kim has had many successes – not least with hayfever sufferers who claim that Bowen has stopped their annual misery with treatment.

“I have a wide range of clients of all ages – from newborn babies to the elderly who I treat for many things. Bowen really seems to help people recover from injuries faster and is an excellent pain relief. I get really encouraging feedback from clients and I don’t have to see them again very often if at all.

Box Brownie

I first encountered a Eastman Kodak Box brownie aged six; my mother still had hers from her own childhood; I was allowed to play with it but nobody ever thought to put any film it for me so instead I’d pretend to be an explorer with my camera deep in the darkest jungles of suburban Guildford.

The Box Brownie story began in 1898; Frank Brownell was tasked by George Eastman to design a portable camera to bring the still new medium of photography to the masses. The first model was released in 1900 and made out of cardboard and wood; 150,000 were sold for a dollar each in the first year. Suddenly everyday life moments could be captured rather than being posed for in studios. The first photos were tiny at just 5cm (2¼ ins) square so in 1901 Brownie 2 was released for $2 that produced 10cm square photos. Using 120 film that’s still in production over 100 years later.

Traditional methods of advertising were changed with the cameras being advertised in popular rather than trade magazines. The Brownie Camera Club encouraged children to join and send in their pictures for the chance of prizes. Although before the 50s heyday epitomised by the series Mad Men; turn of the century advertising execs came up with such slogans as ‘you push the button we do the rest,’ ‘celebrate the moments of your life’ and of course that ‘Kodak moment.’ The last slogan still finds its place in urban culture as signifying when something cringe worthy is done and worthy of a photo.

The last Box Brownies were produced in 1975 ending a run that included over 150 different models. Names such as the No.1, No.2 and No.3 became the Target, Hawkeye and Beau.

I was surprised recently when I read an article questioning the fitness of the police because I always thought Sting did that Tic Tac Yoga, or whatever it’s called, so he must be pretty fit- anyway, they don’t play together anymore do they? But I’d got it wrong, it meant potential actual police officers! Silly me.

Apparently, the level of fitness required to become a Police Officer in the UK is too much for many of the applicants. Some poor souls who take the test are so exhausted afterwards they’re even too tired to lift the cups of tea provided as a pick you up; actually, I think some of them needed a crane to pick them up afterwards-though I shouldn’t think that stopped them from assaulting the chocolate biscuits.

It seems-and are you surprised at this-too many young people are spending time sitting playing on electronic wotsits that appear to be permanently attached to their hands, instead of running around outside.

Consequently, many of the candidates can’t manage the physical side of the entrance test.

I’d like to suggest a few exercises that may just improve fitness.

First of all, how about karaoke workouts?

No

honestly I’m not making this up, you can do karaoke workouts. Apparently it’s the same as in a normal spinning class. Yes spinning! Oh do keep up-riding bikes that have been bolted into the floor so they don’t go anywhere! Yes, it does sound daft, but it’s very popular amongst keep fit types I’m told.

This variation on spinning has bikes with television screens attached playing karaoke favourites, which you would then belt out at the top of your voice, whilst pedalling like mad! They say it is good for cardio vascular workouts.

I’m not sure who “they” are, but I think ear plugs may be required equipment around some musically challenged spinners.

If that doesn’t get future Police Officers toned, there is a Chinese invention that will clean uniforms as you exercise. The Bike Washing Machine!

It’s similar to normal exercise bikes, except this has a drum attached to it containing water. You put your dirty washing and detergent in it then pedal for all you’re worth, making the drum turn and washing your clothes as you keep fit! As a result, we’d get fitter police, Dirty Harry would be a thing of the past and money laundering would be so much easier!

Earlier than that in 1930; George Eastman celebrated 50 years of Kodak by announcing that all American children aged 12 at the time would be given a special edition Eastman Anniversary Camera. Parents simply took their child to their local Kodak vendor from May 1st 1930 and the camera with a gold anniversary sticker and free roll of film was handed over. This generous act was to thank parents and grandparents for making photography and Kodak so popular. Eastman also wanted a new generation to discover the art and incidentally buy more Kodak products. Over a half a million cameras and films were gifted to American children that year.

In 1940 Kodak added the Six-20 camera which came with a large flashgun synchronised with the shutter action. In 1952 the 127 Brownie was introduced; selling a million copies in just 2 years and then millions more before being discontinued in 1959. It’s arguably the biggest selling version ever. In 1957 the Starflash was released, the first Kodak Brownie to have a built in flash unit. Bulbs were simply popped in and out of the camera.

I remember as a child in the 70’s my dad always carrying a 10 pack of spare bulbs around for his camera. I also remember that nabbed live one’s exploded when thrown against a hard surface.

Being so young (at heart) I got my one and only Brownie aged 13 which was sadly the last Brownie model ever to be produced in 1980; called the Anniversary. It used 120 film cartridges and I remember taking it to France on an exchange trip and using it regularly afterwards. Sadly after a serious fire in 1986 the camera, my photographs and my other collectables were reduced to ashes. Although the Box Brownies are no longer produced they’re still popular amongst film photographers and are prized by collectors.

Quixote-crazy: rewriting Spain's comic bible

Labouring to render in modern Spanish this 17thcentury comic masterpiece about a delusional would-be knight, he stumbled on an unfamiliar word: "trompogelas". "It was absolutely unintelligible," Trapiello told AFP. After a whole morning's research, he decided it meant something like: "It went in one ear and out the other."

Spaniards are crazy for "Don Quixote". They often quote the tale of the bumbling country gentleman and his tubby sidekick Sancho Panza, whose misguided adventures are known to readers worldwide.

But as they mark the fourth centenary of the novel's completion and the author's death, sceptics are asking: how many Spanish-speakers can actually read the original 1,000-page opus?

In a survey published in June by Spain's state research institute CIS, nearly six out of 10 people in Spain said they had read at least part of Don Quixote or some adaption of it.

But more than half said they thought the book was a "difficult" read.

"There are a great many people who have not read it or who have given it up several times because it is so hard," said Trapiello.

"They are obliged to read it in language that is not understood nowadays. They make you read it at school and lots of people have bad memories of that." In late July Trapiello's adaptation stood ninth on the Spanish bestseller list published by ABC newspaper -- two places behind "Grey", the latest erotic romance by British author E.L. James.

The Spanish Royal Academy, the official authority on the language, last year published its own simplified version for schools by the historical novelist and scholar Arturo Perez-Reverte.

Some intellectuals lashed out at what they saw as tampering with their beloved Quixote.

David Felipe Arranz, a literary journalist and academic at Madrid's Carlos III University, called the new versions "a crime against literature".

"I ask the booksellers in Madrid and they tell me no one buys Cervantes' original novel anymore because readers prefer the 'light' version," he told AFP. "You cannot twist the flavour of the words of the greatest writer in our language."

Cervantes' comic tale marked world literature forever.

The Cervantes Institute, Spain's network of overseas cultural missions, say it is reckoned to be the most translated book after the Bible.

and adapted into comic books and children's stories, said Ernesto Perez, the head of cultural activities in the institute. "What a paradox," said Trapiello. "A French, German or English-speaking reader can read it without any problems" in translation.

"But Spanish-speaking readers can't understand half of it unless they read it with notes."

The first volume of "The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha" was published in 1605.

Within a few years it had been translated into English, with characters' speech adapted into Cockney slang, and into French, with added sex scenes made up by the translators, Perez said.

The second part came 10 years later and Cervantes died in poverty a year after that in 1616.

Authorities said this year they had identified his remains in the crypt of a convent in Madrid.

At the Cervantes Institute's palatial headquarters in Madrid, display cases are filled with elegant foreign editions of Quixote.

The institute has laid out its collection of translations, along with posters and a screen showing film versions, in an exhibition that runs until September.

Meanwhile, branches of the institute around the world have been hosting Quixote-themed talks, readings and film screenings.

The Royal Academy this year published a new standard edition of the text with footnotes and essays.

The last such edition in 2005 sold three million copies, said Francisco Rico, head of the academy's series of classic titles. He welcomes other adaptations.

"Any attempt to make Quixote more readable is positive," Rico said.

Although Quixote "at first was not highly rated intellectually", it has been consistently popular with the public, Rico said.

"Shakespeare got forgotten for a time. For centuries no one remembered Dante. Voltaire has had his ups and downs. But Quixote has been a bestseller ever since it was published," he added.

Spain’s Areas Where Stocks of Unsold New Homes Have Increased

Although the stock of unsold new housing in Spain has been reducing since 2010, there are still some areas where it has actually increased.

Specifically, in Ceuta, Melilla, Vizcaya and Álava, the stock of unsold new housing accumulated in the last year up to the end of December 2014 has increased by more than 5%.

In general, the stock accumulated at end of December last year decreased in all regions, except Ceuta and Melilla, where it increased by 18.10%, to reach a total of 744 unsold homes.

With regard to the provinces, unsold stocks in Vizcaya and Álava have also increased compared to 2013. In Vizcaya it increased by 11.62%, with 3,227 homes unsold, while in Álava, the stock rose by 4.76%, to a total of 2,309 homes.

Despite these year-on-year increases, it should be noted that these four areas are not the ones which have most unsold stock over the total. In fact, the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, along with the regions of Navarra, Cantabria and Extremadura, are the areas with the lowest percentages of stock over the national total, while

together accounting for 49,64% of the national total are the three regions of Valencia, Andalucía and Catalonia.

Spain’s Ministry of Development updates the calculation of new housing stock annually by adding the homes which have been completed during the year and by deducting the new homes which have been sold. According to their calculations, the stock of unsold new homes in Spain stands at an estimated total of 535,734 homes, representing a reduction of 5% compared to 2013.

It is at an early stage, but I would like to know if there is anything we should be doing from a legal point of view while she is still of able mind. (The original question was much longer with a lot more detail and involving other matters also. With the client’s permission we have prepared this abbreviated version.)

Answer: We would recommend that your wife issues you with a Spanish enduring power of attorney. (This is quick, easy and even though it could vary depending on the solicitor, it will not cost you more than 400euro). We have a booklet on the different types of powers of attorney you can sign in these circumstances. Simply request it by e-mail and we will post or e-mail it to you free of charge.

Unlike in the UK this document can only be issued while your wife understands what she is doing. If it was required later on, a much more complicated procedure would be required using the local courts (this is an expensive and long procedure).

The power of attorney is necessary because if it is not signed, the moment she is no longer of able mind you will not be able to handle her accounts, sell your

jointly-owned property etc.

The one thing she cannot issue you with power of attorney for is for signing a new will, which is why we would recommend that you take a good look at her will to make sure that it is correct, as she will not be able to modify it in any way the moments she no longer understands what she is doing. Make sure that it complies with the New Directive 650/2012, that the beneficiaries are those she wishes, that you are comfortable with the named executor etc. etc. Remember when she is no longer of able mind the will cannot be changed under any circumstance.

I would look at your own will also, as if you have left everything to your wife you may wish to change this in favor of perhaps one of your children.

In the UK I would also recommend that you put things in motion to obtain a full enduring power of attorney. The forms can be downloaded from the internet and you can start things off by post. In the UK this can also be done after she is no longer of able mind, but there is no harm in doing it beforehand.

We would strongly recommend a visit to your solicitor to discuss your situation in particular and to address at least the matters explained above. An honest and upfront meeting of the family with a solicitor at an early stage of the illness is a very good idea.

Considerations when buying a Cave House in Spain

between a cave house and a conventional bricks and mortar building ?

Locations : Almost all cave houses are build into the sides of a hill in an area which is dry and has rock types that lend themselves to their construction. Virtually every cave house you see when driving around southern Spain was originally dug out by hand in the first 70 years of the last century. Digging your own home out of mother earth and shifting all the resulting rock was an arduous task not to be taken without first carefully selecting your site, after all this was the family home. As a result cave houses are strong, dry and have stood the test of time.

The cave houses of old were the homes of poor peasants and were very basic affairs, no water, no sewerage and sometimes only the very basic electrical supply ( a couple of lightbulbs if you were fortunate).

After the 1970s most cave houses were abandoned as the village inhabitants were either forced away

During the 1990s rural tourism began to flourish. Supported by government grants, some enterprising individuals started to buy up derelict cave house, modernise them in a very traditional style and rent them out to the curious and those looking for something a little different. It was not long before cave houses pricked the interest of International tourists, closely followed by others who wanted to own their own, giving birth to the revival of the cave house. Today’s modernised cave houses usually have several rooms built on the front of the old traditional cave home. In the conventional build you will usually find living rooms, kitchen, bathrooms etc, basically this is the part for daytime living. The front build has plenty of light through large windows and the cave rooms at the back are mostly used for ‘snug as a bug in a rug’ bedrooms.

It comes as a surprise to some that cave houses can have every modern facility, including electricity, potable water, sewerage, satellite TV, Internet

and log burners for winter warmth.

If you want, you can have central heating preferably in the form of underfloor heating. As cave houses maintain a relatively constant internal temperature summer and winter, air conditioning is not required. Outside swimming pools are not uncommon.

Thus, among the major countries of the eurozone, Spain will be the economy with the greatest growth in 2015, ahead of Germany (1.5%), France (1.3%) and Italy (0.7%).

However, El Economista reported that the growth in Spain’s economy is expected to moderate slightly in 2016, to around 2.7%, compared to 1.9% predicted for Germany, 1.7% for France and 1.3% for Italy, while for the whole of the eurozone, BBVA Research forecasts GDP growth of 1.5% in 2015, accelerating to 1.9%

Both in 2015 in 2016, the activity of the Spanish economy “will grow significantly”, supported by domestic factors, according to the report, which points out that “the recovery of the fundamentals and the change in the tone of fiscal policy will contribute to the sustained recovery of domestic demand”, although on the other hand the analysts suggest that “the contribution of net exports to growth will be negligible”.

The report highlights that the improvement of the Spanish economy will result in the creation of one million jobs between the years 2015 and 2016. Spanish Government Refunding “Discriminatory” Tax to Britons There are currently around 700,000 British nationals who own property in Spain. Some are resident there, even more own second or holiday homes, and some simply own investment properties. However, one problem that British owners of Spanish properties have had to contend with is inheritance tax. Until quite recently, residents were taxed at an almost negligible rate but others were subject to excessive and, it has now been ruled, discriminatory levels of tax.

Until a European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling last Autumn, inheritance tax for residents in Spain would most often be as low as 1%. Non-resident owners and those who spent part of the year in Spain and part of the year in the UK could end up paying over a third (35%), even if the property was being inherited by their spouse.

In September last year, the ECJ decided that these charges were discriminatory and that foreign residents had therefore been overcharged when it came to inheritance tax bills

levied on Spanish properties. The Spanish government was therefore told to refund those who had paid the excessive levels of tax, along with interest. The first overcharged British investors are now starting to receive their repayments.

It is estimated that 60,000 British owners of Spanish properties were overcharged on their inheritance tax bills.

However, due to time limitations set by Spanish law, only around half of these are believed to be eligible to reclaim the excess they paid.

It is usual for income tax on overseas investment properties and other foreign assets to be paid in the country where those assets exist. Usually, you can then claim tax relief in the UK to ensure you are not being taxed twice on that income (though whether you can claim tax relief on the full amount depends on the agreements the UK has in place with that particular country). Greece economy in surprise return to growth

The Greek economy grew by 0.8% in the second quarter of the year, confounding expectations of a steep contraction.

The official figures, based on a flash estimate, also revised a reading of 0.2% negative growth in the first quarter to a flat reading, showing no change in economic activity.

The reading did not break down which sectors had been most active. The figures from the country's Elstat agency come as the Greek parliament prepares to vote on new bailout plans. The Greek government has defended the controversial new programme as tough, but essential if the country is to avoid financial collapse.

The credit crisis sparked six years of recession in Greece, from which it emerged in 2014 before shrinking again.

Finland's finance minister, Alexander Stubb, said: "We have come a long way during the summer. The future of the euro was at stake.... but now we've got a solution and will live with it." On Wednesday, former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said the bailout deal was "not going to work", because it was based on an unsustainable debt burden that the economy would be unable to produce enough to repay.

The Market

London has Petticoat Lane, Paris the Marché Bastille and Madrid, El Rastro but none can compare with Alqueria’s Conemallo Market.

The Conemallo is held weekly on waste ground to the west of the Village where the goats, sheep and feral cats feed, play and breed. Perhaps not as big as those in Europe’s capital cities but just as colourful with the same variety of stalls and just as many pickpockets. One enterprising Villager has a stall selling ‘unpickable’ wallets while his brother, on another stall sells the famous ‘never-faillittle-gem-wallet-picking-kit’ as used by Europe’s major villains.

As crowds mill about the stalls, barter noisily over prices, examine goods and search frantically for disappeared wallets so the ambience becomes electrifying.

If we join the would-be punters and examine the goods on offer we find four stalls stand out from the rest.

Rodriquez, the most hated man in Alqueria and ‘Jefe’ to the Newcomer’s barrio sells, among other things neo-fascists insignia, ‘The Collected Autobiographies of the World’s Psychopaths’ and the newly published ‘Malice Made Easy’ by I. Screwemall.

Although his clientele is rather limited at the Market proper he does a roaring mail-order trade mainly to political organizations in northern Europe.

The next stall of interest is Locos Paco’s.

Here one can by anything for your pet Saharan Dung Beetle. A faux-diamond encrusted collar, a kennel or a variety of dung beetle treats such ‘liquor blesbok droppings’ or ‘caramelised dromedary faeces’. His best selling line is the whip and harness designed for dung beetle racing but purchased by those with an

We now come across Antonio Poyato’s Remitroot stall. Here Remitroot in all its forms is on offer with the added bonus of free Remitroot wine tasting. Many comatose bodies litter the ground around Poyato’s untidy table, upturned glasses and empty bottles are all awash with spilt liquor and wine. Remitroot the aphrodisiac changes hands in plain brown parcels, the recipients making off through the crowd with expectant grins and twitching groins.

Manuela, as might be expected has a stall littered with love potions, underclothing guaranteed to warm up the coldest of bodies and a range of appliances which stretch among other things the imagination to its limits.

Manuela’s own preferred ‘love potion’ is simply to grab the male in question, drag him to a suitably deserted and comfortable location and letting natural pheromones do the rest.

Take a stroll around this singular market, keep your hand firmly on your wallet and experience the sights, sounds and aromas on offer. On no account however be tempted to sample the traditional cuisine, that is only for the brave or terminally daft.

Last December we went into the jewellers in Albox High Street to buy Pete a nice watch, one that showed not only the time but also the date.

A watch was chosen and wrapped, and a not inconsiderable sum of money changed hands.

He put it on proudly on Christmas Day, and remained delighted with it until 36th of December, when he manually turned its winder until it agreed that perhaps 5th January was a more likely date.

However, on January 33rd I insisted that he take it back, (we had kept the box!). The small but almost perfectly formed heir apparent to the business took it, wound it round to 2nd February and handed it back with the comforting words that ‘it was stuck, it will be fine now.’

February came and went for the rest of the world, but not for the watch.

It stuck resolutely to the belief that February went on forever.

So we took it back. Again. I fixed the heir apparent with a stern eye. ‘It’s not working properly.’ He squirmed a bit and agreed to send it back to the Technico.

Eventually it returned, mended, the heir apparent assured us.

The watch enjoyed May so much that it resolutely refused to commence June. So we took it back, and I treated the heir apparent to two stern eyes.

‘The Technico said it was mended.’ He maintained from the safety of the far side of the counter. ‘I’ll send it again.’

He added quickly.

June became July, and once more we went back to collect the watch. Little

On July 32nd miffed became an understatement - the Biggs dander was up. I stalked into the shop, oozing displeasure from every pore. ‘We want our money back, or a replacement watch that works.’ I didn’t add ‘Or else’ but my body language conveyed my meaning quite eloquently.

The heir apparent, already a small man, became smaller. He wriggled and wrung his hands. ‘I will personally take it to the Technico.’

We fetched it today. The heir apparent produced the watch from nowhere with the speed of a practised conjuror, and explained volubly that the Technico said that the date was not on an automatic disc, and needed winding round each month.

We took the watch and left. My silence was deafening. Do I believe him? No, but it’s a nice looking watch.

Preserve the flavours of a batch of raspberries in this refreshing concentrated drink - delicious with soda on ice Ingredients 500g raspberries 500g caster sugar 3 tbsp red wine vinegar method Put the raspberries in a pan with the sugar and vinegar.

Mash over a low heat for 10 mins until smooth and syrupy.

Rub through a sieve into a clean pan.

2.Tip the seeds from the sieve into a bowl and stir in 300ml water, then sieve again to remove the last of the pulp from seeds. Pour the liquid into the pan with the sieved pulp, stir well and boil for 1 min. Pour into small sterilised bottles and seal. The cordial will keep unopened for a few months. Once opened, store in the fridge.

SPORTSMAN JOSÉ MANUEL NEBREDA OPENS “AL-ANDARUN” 850km ROUTE THROUGH ANDALUSIA IN 21 STAGES THAT COMBINES SPORT AND TOURISM

At San Juan de los Terreros on August 14 the Malaga athlete Jose Manuel Nebreda began the first part of the route consisting of 21 stages from San Juan de los Terreros (Almería) to the Isla Canela (Huelva). The Al-Andarun project combines sport with tourism and Charity. The initiative hopes to raise money to fund the construction of a primary school in Ethiopia by the Manos Unidas foundation.

The first stage of the 850 kilometre epic journey on foot was from San Juan de Los Terreros to Mojácar, arriving at the Piedra Villazar beach at lunchtime. The remaining stages will alternate between running and walking and anyone who wants to support the efforts of this athlete along the route or at any of the staging points will be very welcome.

Nebreda, in a presentation in his home town Malaga, explained that the inspiration of the Al-Andarun route as the example of the Camino de Santiago pilgrim route which generates significant economic activity in the towns through which it passes. At the same time, participants will be taking part in an activity whilst in direct contact with the natural world. It is a healthy formula where the competitive spirit that usually affects athletes is replaced by the idea of enjoying the journey and achieving personal growth in which “The limits are without boundaries”. The Malaga runner also believes that this project can help to promote sport tourism as people following the steps of Al-Andarun will need accommodation and food along the way, so municipalities that are on the itinerary will benefit directly.

OSAÏA REDING, MOJÁCAR’S YOUNG KITESURFING PRODIGY

The Dames in Spain begin their next season of events on September 21st at the Parador in Mojacar at 11am. Osaïa Reding, the 11 year old Mojácar resident, continues to reap success in the sport of kite surfing.

Osaïa is a bright young hopeful in the sport and continues to reach for the top in the championships that she attends.

This year she has participated in several competitions both nationally and internationally. In the Spanish Kite Cup 2015, held in San Pere Pescador (Girona), she took the podium as third runner despite her young age and being the youngest competitor. She gained fourth place in the Championship of Spain, but the judges placed her up with the three finalists for her effort and enthusiasm, since she was the youngest entrant in the championship.

Osaïa also participated in the World Championship Kitesurf Competition which was also held in San Pere

Pescado (Girona), taking the seventh position even though she was competing at such a high level and again being the youngest of the event. Youngsters from more than thirty countries participated in this world championship. Osaïa is proud to bear on her board the shield of her home town of Mojácar, in which she takes great pride.

Whenever the weather is good you can see Osaïa practicing on the beaches of Mojácar where she has a strong affinity to the people. The Town Council is one of the sponsors that support her in all her competitions. Her kiteboard also bears the emblem of the Mojácar Indalo as the people and the municipality are proud that among them there resides a rising star of the sport, who despite her young age continues to add awards to her tally.

Your Guide for Dining Out in Spain Dining out in Spain can be confusing for visitors and expatriates alike. The crazy mealtimes, lack of menu translations, and the extensive variety of pork products we never even knew existed can make any seasoned gourmand a bit frustrated.

Here I present the first of various articles of a comprehensive guide on dining out in Spain– what you need to know to make the most of your culinary experience. Spanish Food and Drink Establishments: Where do Spanish people eat and drink?

Bars, restaurants, cafés, pubs, and discos.

Bars: Walk through any Spanish town and you may begin to think that the people are a bunch of borrachos (drunks). With creative names like Miguel’s Bar, Madrid Bar, and Delicious Bar (sarcasm) these small establishments are usually full of patrons for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

But bars here are not quite like what we would think of in English. They are simply less formal restaurants where you can usually have breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee and a snack, and dinner.

Many bars serve tapas (small plates) and others have a fixed price menu at lunchtime. Sometimes a waiter will take your order and other times it’s self-service. Most do, however, serve alcohol at all times of day (therefore kind of living up to their name) and it’s not at all strange to see people taking a shot of liquor with their coffee in the morning, or enjoying a beer before noon! https://spanishsabores.wordpress.com

Iced lollies for Benidorm's 'hot' safari park animals

ANIMALS at Benidorm's Terra Natura safari park are being given ice lollies every day to combat the heat.

Over 50 kilos of in-season fruit are used every month and ices are tailored to different species of animal.

Watermelon, honeydew melon and plums are the most likely to be found at present, although they are blended with others easy to find fresh, together with a mix of juice and seeds, and then turned into ice poles, 'kebabs' or, in the case of very large animals such as rhinos and elephants, huge blocks.

For carnivorous animals like lions and tigers, ice is mixed with chicken and fish. Practically every species gets to try them at least every other day.

In some cases, the ices are hidden up or distributed over a wide area to keep the animals' natural instincts of hunting for food alive and healthy, or as a 'game'.

This tends to be what happens with felines and primates, says a Terra Natura spokesperson.

Miss Carter’s War by Sheila Hancock

“She could have had a lifetime of peace here with a man who loved her.

When the hamlet gathered on Sundays to play bowles, her grandchildren could have joined those of their neighbours.”

Marguerite Carter was half-French.

She worked behind enemy lines for the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during the second world war. Her mother was French, her father English and Marguerite had left France when she was 12. The Bletchley lot called them the Baker St. Irregulars.

The story takes us through the 50s through to the millenium when Marguerite is a 24 year old teacher starting her first job at Dartford County Grammar, Hancock’s old school. Marguerite, just like the writer, had a Messiah complex according to her close friend Tony Stansfield and Hancock’s late husband John Thaw.

She had a strong need to look after people being a busybody as she called herself. She hated idleness and in moments of loneliness she would start on her crusade of making the world a better place.

The book took 4 years of researching and writing. It is a work of fiction but based on real historical events, useful as a social history and indicating Hancock’s interest in political causes and her left-wing politics. Interestingly, some of the characters are real.

After being awarded her degree in 1948 from Cambridge alongside the Queen proved to be a historical occasion. She was an exceptional student who could have chosen to go into politics of the Foreign Office but instead she chose to go into teaching because of her desire to change the world. Her idealism amounted to a desire for her students “to rule the world.”

Post-war austerity destroyed the sense of optimism that people needed to rebuild their shattered lives. The UK was slowly recovering although there were

signs of devastation and damaged people like Elsie Miller, labelled and billeted with strangers, mentally and physically abused, underfed, bombed, machine-gunned and deprived of all the usual joys of childhood, bomb sites to play in, rationing and prefabs to live in. They needed order and discipline.

At 24 years of age, Marguerite began her career, four years after the war had ended.

Marguerite develops a loving relationship with Tony, sports’ teacher through a mutual love of politics and attending political rallies and anti-bomb demonstrations; Tony enjoyed heckling the Tory politicians. He affectionately renamed her Little Lizzie Dripping.

For people like Tony and Marguerite it should have been a wonderful time to be alive with a brave new world on the horizon.

Marguerite became infatuated with Tony but discovered his homosexuality when they went to see Judy Garland at the Palladium.

Homosexuality was taboo and Tony felt unable to trust anyone, even Marguerite.

“My whole life and my job are in jeopardy.”

He was offered aversion therapy, electric shocks hormone injections, the lot. He did the therapy but refused the rest.

The story quickly moves on and we are now plunged into the late 50s when Marguerite had been teaching for 10 years.

It was the era of the obscene arms race. The Americans were conducting test explosives of the hydrogen bomb. The couple went to a meeting with the historian AJP Taylor followed by a CND march where Marguerite met Jimmy and Stan ex RAF. Jimmy had been awarded the DFC for his bravery although the truth suggests otherwise when he reveals it to Marguerite.

At 30, Marguerite felt that her career was stagnating and she was becoming too complacent. Tony wanted to work in a new comprehensive, more in keeping with his working class roots and he persuades Marguerite into joining him. Six years on, we are immersed into the Swinging Sixties

when Marguerite meets up with Jimmy. He is feckless but irresistible and they embark on a sexual journey. Simultaneously, Tony finds himself a bono homi, a ballet dancer called Donald who soon moves into Tony’s flat and transforms it with original and expensive paintings. They settle into middleaged contentment for a short while.

Once she loses some interest in politics, Marguerite becomes impassioned with the wave of feminism that was sweeping the country. At this point in time she was approaching her fifties. This was the era of HIV, the death of Princess Diana and the invasion of Afghanistan.

We have a number of flashbacks to the time of the war when Marguerite was in the Resistance and she had fallen in love with Marcel, the love of her life. There are constant reflections of the brutal killings of innocents as well as traitors, sometimes it is difficult to tell them apart. They are all victims of war. Manuel suspected she had a cause, a desire to fight for a future in England post-war. when he just wanted to leave it all behind and he let her go to fulfil her dreams: “I will always love you. Till the day I die. You must follow your dream. I don’t belong in it.”

It takes her 50 years before she decides to return to France, disillusioned with her life in England and extremely lonely. She goes in search of her lost loved, wanting to discover if Marcel is still alive.

The story is readable although it races on too quickly and Marguerite can be infuriating with her lifelong campaign to send the working class girls to universities against their families’ wishes when she has made some sacrifices in her own life. It’s almost as if she has repressed her own future happiness at the expense of promoting equality for her students, especially the girls.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel although she suffers some acute personal tragedies, enough to send her into a spiral of depression for a while.

And yes, we’ve just had such an experience. Our granddaughter, aged 15, was flying home, unaccompanied for the first time, from Alicante to Tanzania, a journey requiring changes at Amsterdam and Nairobi. Such a journey is daunting enough, but her natural apprehension was augmented when, although the entire journey was booked with the same airline, they were unable to print the necessary boarding passes at Alicante and told her she’d have to check herself in again at Schiphol.

Somewhat concerned at this situation I telephoned the airline’s Customer Care Department to seek advice.

They informed me that the problem was the girl’s own fault, since her ticket had been purchased through a Travel Agent rather than online, and that if she wasn’t deemed capable of dealing with this minor inconvenience, then her parents should have paid for an escort. There was no evidence of any sense of care; no Company pride, nor of concern for the welfare of a vulnerable young person; and no attempt at reassurance that she’d be OK – just complete disinterest and a sense of shrugging shoulders. I couldn’t even get advice as to how she might find a check-in desk without leaving the airport, and it rapidly became clear

that the Customer Care Team were actually a separate company contracted to provide Customer Services, entirely independent of the airline, with whom, I was told, they had no contact at all.

And the more the conversation progressed, the more it dawned on me that this was a twentyfirst century version of the parable Jesus told of the Good Shepherd. Had he been around today, it might well have been the parable of the Good Customer Carer, who as owner of the Company and not merely an employee, really cared for his customers so went into the airport himself to search for the young girl without her boarding pass and ensure it was brought to her.

You may have noticed the ad campaign for Vauxhall's new Viva. It's quite retro, as it draws on the fact that the Viva name was first applied to one of its models back in 1963, and it stopped making the small family saloons that bore that badge some 36 years ago. In the "gay" ads, as they'd have been called at the time, all pastel shades and jolly typeface, you are invited to believe that the new Viva is a vast improvement on the old one, because it has lots of new features, such as an automatic tyre-pressure monitor.

If anything, Vauxhall understates matters. The original boxy Viva ran out of puff at 72mph and would get you to 60mph in some 20 seconds. You'd probably find some rust on a new one within the first year of Korea, is a totally better beast. What's more, the ownership, and the game was pretty much up for any average British worker can earn the price of a new Viva before its fifth birthday.

Spanish football club ham it up for new away kit

CD Guijuelo pay tribute to jamón ibérico with new strip, but design leaves a sour taste in the mouth for some Never mind the stripes, flashy colours or zigzags. When CD Guijuelo, a Spanish football club, were in need of a design for their new away kit, they looked to one of the country’s bestknown culinary treasures: jamón ibérico.

The Segunda B side is based in the province of Salamanca, an area wellknown for the quality of its ham, club president Jorge Hernández said as he showed off the new strip. “There is nothing that quite identifies Guijuelo like jamón.

Many of us, in some way or another, live off jamón,” he said. “And what a way to bring jamón to all the places we go.”

He pointed to the design, which features strips of ham abstractly strewn along every inch of the material. “We also think this design could have a big impact.”

Reaction to the new kit has been swift.

Many wondered if it was officially the worst kit in history, while others drew parallels with Lady Gaga’s 2010 meat dress.

Some celebrated what they saw as a brilliant marketing strategy. “It might be dumb but it’s trending on Twitter and I’m sure it will be on TV. Everyone is talking about it,” tweeted engineering

student Nacho García Estévez.

Others complained that the jersey was making them hungry, a remark likely to be well-received by the jamón producers who sponsor the club.

The kit was designed

by Daen Sport, the same brand that in 2013 designed the broccoli-inspired away kit for La Hoya Lorca, paying tribute to the club’s home in the vegetablegrowing region of Murcia.

Recently the firm provoked ire among bloggers who called its fiesta-inspired home kit for AD Caravaca an assault on the eyes.

Spain has had its fair share of memorable kits in years past, such as the tuxedoinspired kit for Cultural y Deportivo Leonesa, which struck a note somewhere between formal wear and sporting attire.

This season’s kits for CD Lugo also turned to comestibles, featuring beer and, in a nod to one of the most popular delicacies in the club’s home region of Galicia, an octopus tentacle. http://www.theguardian.com/

Murray beats Djokovic in Montreal Andy Murray ended an eight-match losing run against Novak Djokovic, beating the world number one for the first time in two years to win the Rogers Cup. The British number one’s 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory in three hours in Montreal earned him a fourth title of the year.

A first win over the Serb since the 2013 Wimbledon final will be a huge boost for Murray before the US Open in New York starts on 31 August.

The Scot dominated from the baseline as he claimed an 11th Masters title.

Murray is now set to overtake Roger Federer in Monday’s new ATP rankings to return to number two for the first time since 2013.

The 28-year-old broke in the second game of the deciding set and held to establish a 3-0 lead before saving seven break points in a pivotal 18-minute fifth game to maintain his break advantage at 4-1.

Djokovic, chasing a 25th Masters title, saw off three championship points at 5-2 before Murray served out for the match.

He dedicated the victory to his coach Amelie Mauresmo, who gave birth to a baby boy on Sunday.

Djokovic was aiming to win his fourth Rogers Cup in his ninth final In an absorbing, high-quality match, both players produced exquisite shots but it was Murray who dictated play, forcing a total of 19 break points on the Djokovic serve.

It was the first time Murray had beaten Djokovic over the full distance in a three-set Masters match, and it was his first win on a hard court over the Wimbledon champion since the US Open final in 2012.

“Things can better very quickly and they can get worse very quickly in sport,” Murray told Sky Sports.

“It’s important for me to analyse this week and work on areas to improve on before the US Open starts.

“I need to make sure I recover well from this and get ready and hopefully play a good tournament in Cincinnati.

This match will be good physically and mentally for the build up for sure.”

Record Score for Wendy Greaves

After more than 200 events in nearly 8 years Wendy Greaves became the first Forum Golf Society player to hit the magical 9 under Par stableford score of 45 points whilst cruising to an emphatic victory at Valle del Este on August 14th.

Dave Vickers (second) beat Richard Price (third) on countback after both players achieved 40 points, a score that on virtually any other day would have been more than enough to secure victory. Marie Vickers (fourth), Malcolm Sibbons (fifth) & Dave White (sixth) also needed countback to separate them after all scoring 36 points.

There were also three nearest the pin prizes, with these going to Pat

Garrigan, Dave Ashcroft & Dave Vickers.

Jason Day: Failure prepared me for US PGA Championship win

Jason Day believes his previous near misses prepared him to hold his nerve and win the US PGA Championship.

The Australian, 27, had finished in the top four at six majors before his victory at Whistling Straits on Sunday.

“I’ve seen multiple mental coaches,” said Day. “But the biggest thing that prepares you for something like this is the sheer experience of failure.

“Looking at it as a positive and knowing you can learn from anything - that really gets you mentally tough.”

Day won with a score of 20 under par, which broke Tiger Woods’s major record of 19 under at the 2000 Open

day with a two-stroke lead and he held off the challenge of American Jordan Spieth to earn a win which had him tears on the final hole.

“It was probably the hardest round of golf I have ever had to play,” he said. “I knew it was going to be tough but I didn’t realise how tough.”

Day went into the final round of this year’s US Open and the Open Championship with a share of the lead before failing to kick on for victory.

“I really thought my first major championship was going to be at

“Augusta in 2013 when I had the lead on 16, that was a tough one to finish and get over,” said Day, as he recalled bogeying two of the final three holes to fall out of contention at the Masters two years ago.

“But if I didn’t have that failure I wouldn’t be standing here with this trophy.”
