Royal British Legion Albox Branch Remembrance Service
Members and guests from the Albox Branch of the RBL commemorated the Fallen in a service of Remembrance at the Chapel in la Aljambra on November 11th. The service was led by Duncan Burr (pictured), Chaplain to the Branch, and the silence impeccably observed by all present. During the service members and guests were invited to lay wreaths and place poppies and crosses as a token of remembrance to those lost but not forgotten (pictured). Sandy Tucker (Membership Secretary) sang a solo of ‘When I survey the wondrous cross’ and Judith Tope (Poppy Coordinator) recited a poem written 5 years ago by James Wiggins, called ‘The Battle of Britain’, commemorating the long air fight, well fought. The service concluded and those present enjoyed coffee and chocolate biscuits. The Christmas Poppy Dinner Dance will take place on Saturday

Close to 100 migrants tried to storm the border fence from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla on Saturday in a scramble that left one man seriously injured, authorities said. Moroccan security forces managed to stop some of the migrants from reaching the fence that seals off Melilla -- one of only two land borders between Africa and the European Union -- but around 30 people still reached it and clambered onto the railings, they said. Two of these managed to get across into the Spanish territory, while one man was seriously injured when he fell from the metres-high fence near the Barrio Chino crossing, authorities in Melilla added in a statement. The man was taken to hospital in Melilla with severe head injuries -- along with three others who were slightly hurt as they too fell from the fence. Other migrants were still clinging onto the railings in high winds, prompting firemen to lay out mattresses and other
material at the base of the fence in an attempt to break any fall. Authorities said the area around Barrio Chino is favoured by migrants and refugees trying to make it into Spain, as the "cluster of homes there allows them to crouch and hide, making it harder for security forces to intercept them." Melilla and Ceuta, another Spanish enclave nearly 400 kilometres (250 miles) away, have for some years been a flashpoint for African migrants trying to enter Spain, with authorities stepping up security by strengthening border barriers. So far this year, according to Melilla authorities, there have been a dozen attempts to cross the border fence there, with more than 100 managing to enter the Spanish enclave. But authorities said this pales in comparison with 2014, when more than 2,000 migrants and refugees managed to enter Melilla. thelocal.com

The London-based grunge rockers, led by singer Chris Martin, will be presenting their new album A head of full dreams along with its earlier, most popular tracks at the one-night-only concert, its sole date in Spain for next year. According to the band, the new album will be released on December 4 and includes duets and tracks produced with top artists including Beyoncé, Noel Gallagher, Merry Clayton and Tove Lo. The first single from the CD, Adventure of a lifetime, was released a week ago and tickets for the Barcelona show will go on sale this coming Friday, November 27.

Coldplay’s last album was recorded in a studio in Barcelona and includes tracks with a traditionally-Spanish feel. The band has always retained close ties to the north-eastern city, and staged a competition there in April last year – the lyrics to one of Coldplay’s songs were hidden in a library in Barcelona, and the person who found them would get a free ticket and backstage pass to their concert in London. In the end, a female student found the paper with the lyrics handwritten by Martin, concealed in the Sant Pau i La Santa Creu library in Barcelona’s Raval district, and claimed her free ticket. spain.com

Friday & Cyber Monday
Black in Spain
This year Black Friday falls on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November, however only a couple of years ago these days were relatively unknown in Spain. Since stores have decided to embrace any opportunity to launch promos to customers, is it really worth waiting?
use credit cards and often don’t have a lot of time (or patience) for shopping.
Black Friday is the name given to the Friday after Thanksgiving that traditionally heralded the start of the Christmas shopping spree in stores in the United States. Cyber Monday is the Monday immediately after Black Friday; the term was introduced in 2005 when it was noticed that there was a substantial increase in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving and hence marketers took this opportunity to offer special promotions to try to increase sales even more. US shoppers have come to expect major discounts on these two days and in the last couple of years Spanish stores have copied the idea. In the US they have studied the different demographics of the two days to target offers accordingly. Black Friday shoppers tend to be older, less internet savvy and often pay in cash. Cyber Monday shoppers are younger, more affluent,
It’s not easy to know exactly what items will be included in store promos, as companies don’t want to risk people waiting all November to make their purchases. One of the best ways to make sure you get the latest information is to sign up to newsletters or follow stores on Facebook as most promotions will only be announced on Thursday evening (for Black Friday) or on Sunday (for Cyber Monday). For in-store promotions remember that items with the biggest reductions will probably only be available in limited numbers (and sizes/colours if we’re talking about clothes and footwear) in order to get customers to visit stores with the hope that they’ll buy something else. For high value items such as electronics or home appliances, it’s a good idea to check the price of an item you’re interested in now as the price may rise slightly in
Well, we haven’t got an answer for that. What we can suggest is that a few days before the end of November you start to check out The E Day – Spain’s “one stop Cyber Monday website” that has had great deals over the last couple of years. http://moneysaverspain.com/
will be more than 1,000 products with special discounts this year, which is 500 more than in 2014. The discounts will be unfolded from as early as this Monday right up until Monday 30, with the majority of offers launched over next weekend. Shoppers will have to be quick as there will be a limited time that these discounts will be on offer, although some will be available for the whole day. El Corte Inglés This will be the third consecutive year that the Spanish department store participates in this pre-Christmas campaign. In 2014, discounts of up to 40% were applied to a wide variety of goods in their shops and online. Adidas The German sports clothing company has announced that it will offer discounts of 25% on all its catalogued items. Media Markt Media Markt will begin launching its discounts on Friday and offers will continue until Monday 30 November, tying in with Cyber Monday. Shoppers can make their purchases in shops or online, and reductions will mainly focus on consoles, films and IT. PC Componentes This is an online retailer that specializes in computer goods and electronics. It has already confirmed that discounts will be placed on items such as graphic cards, smartphones, hard disks, television screens, tablets, laptops, RAM memory, digital cameras, video cameras, gaming products, headphones, keyboards, monitors and consoles. Additionally, discounts of up to 60% will start from this Monday 23 November and continue through to Cyber Monday. Sony From 27 to 30 November, Sony will be reducing
prices on televisions, tablets, cameras, video cameras, headphones, Hi-Fi systems and much more in its shops. The Body Shop This beauty care product shop will offer 40% off all its items online and in its shops (doesn’t include new stock). Visionlab From 27 November until 29 November, Visionlab will reduce all of its products by 40%. This will include glasses, sunglasses, contact lenses or hearing aids. Early shoppers can obtain discounts of 60% for purchases made before 12pm during that weekend. Merkal Calzados From 27 – 29 November, there will be a 20% discount on the collection of shoes with the BLACK code and on Monday 30 November a 20% discount on all products with the code CYBER. Xbox There will be reductions on around 100 different games on Black Friday, although no comment on how much has been made so far. Toys R Us The top shop will be celebrating Black Friday with discounts of 50% on a selection of products throughout the week. This will start this coming Monday and run through until Sunday 29 November, although Cyber Monday will also feature discounted prices on all purchases of at least two products made online (toysrus.es) Each year the number of businesses that participate in the Black Friday campaign grows, and below is a list of additional companies that will have some great offers on their products over the Black Friday weekend. eBay, Phone House, Sprinter, Marypaz, HP, Worten Ikea, Apple, Fnac, Pc Box, Samsung, Zara, Massimo Dutti, Oysho, Mango, H&M, Decathlon, Leroy Merlin Zara, Evolution Juegos Source: www.eleconomista.es, www.abc.es
What is Black Friday and Cyber Monday?
Prepare for Black Friday 2015 Black Friday originated in the US. One month before Christmas, the day after Thanksgiving, prices on commercial goods are reduced to the lowest amount possible just for 24 hours in a bid to kickoff the start of the Christmas present shopping spree period. Since sales periods were deregulated in Spain, the tradition has been carried on over here as well, and next Friday 27 November, the fourth Friday of November, businesses in Spain will be slashing their prices and hoping that Christmas comes early for them as they rack up massive sales. And, in this country, Black Friday, or Viernes Negro, has only been running for three years, but it has already become one of the days of the year that produces the greatest amount of sales in the country. This is followed by Cyber Monday, another day of huge discounts, but related to technology only. Amazon Amazon.es was the first company to start celebrating Black Friday in Spain, and, of course, the American internet giant will be heading the list of participating businesses this year as well. There
What Bargains Can You Expect to Find?
order for the discount to be artificially higher. If you want a specific item then the best advice would be to arrive at the store at opening time Black Friday or you could try asking in store one or two days beforehand whether that particular item will be included in their Black Friday promo (although you might not get an answer!).
So the question is should you wait?

Rancho Luz Del Sol
Rancho Luz Del Sol in Partaloa has been established since 2005. It is a family run business with Erika and Jay at the helm, ably supported by Jay’s parents, Chris and Tanya and their 4 boys, Jack, Ollie, Harry and Charlie.
Initially the Ranch was set up as a riding school offering lessons and hacks out into the countryside as well as livery and pony clubs for kids at the weekends. However, from 2008 on when the effects of the world recession started to take effect, locally they found themselves inundated with calls about horse in need, or from people who could no longer afford to keep their horses. Since that time they have rescued and rehomed more than 20 horses. They have sent horses back to Holland, Belgium and the UK, and many to private homes here in Spain. They have also rescued a huge amount of dogs with one, Albert, recently going back to UK after a holiday maker fell in love with him!! Rancho Luz Del Sol is not a charity so all the work they have done has come out of their own funds. The local community has helped by supporting fund raising events such as barbecue nights or special rides organised with lunch on route, as the cost of some of the rehabilitation with vets fees and special feeds has been expensive. They are now working in tandem with another local business, the Plaza Bar in Partaloa who are organising various fund raising nights to help with running costs over the winter. The Plaza Bar offers great food and a warm welcome and is a great supporter of all these events which are great fun, with a few euros going to such a worthy cause in the process!! This year the Ranch has been visited by Shayne Ward, who came to raise money for The Hearts and Minds Charity. He
and the organisers of this were so impressed with the Ranch’s contribution to the Autistic Charity and with the work they have done for all these horses and dogs that they organised another trip to raise funds for the Ranch itself. Sam Bailey and Lee Latchford-Evans from Steps, Kevin Cooper (ex-pro footballer) is also planning a charity celeb football match to help, so keep your eyes on the Ranch Facebook pages to find out more abut that!! For the various nights being organised at The Plaza Bar check out their advert here in the Sol Times to find out when these events are taking place. The photos are of Oscar are before and after, and he is now being ridden after just being broken in. Shayne Ward (X Factor Winner and now in Corrie) can be seen here with Honey (another rescue) that he rode for the Hearts and Minds Charity Trek. Fund Raising events are being held at The Plaza Bar, Partaloa on Saturday 21st November, a successful Mexican Night was held which raised over 200€ for

welcome to huercal-overa 1€ for a slice of history
Since selling our shop in Turre my husband and I have been able to become interested in our surroundings. For 8 ½ years we would woke up and head off to our shop and never the twain would meet as they say, now all that has changed. A few weeks ago he decided we would investigate what is on our doorstep so to speak and one Saturday (in not so great weather) we ventured to The Watchtower in Heurcal Overa. Or to give it it’s full name “Torre de Huercal Overa”. Admittance to this gem is just

1€ and the views are just amazing. Even though it was a poor day here you could understand why it was built where it was. There would be no creeping up on its occupants. The building itself dates back to 13th century and was actually built by the Arabs when the Nazari kingdom reigned over the south The remains themselves were part of a much bigger fortress but over time the building became dilapidation and only during the Civil War was the building put to use again as a bunker. Some machine guns were placed in many of its openings. The tower has been privately owned for the last fifty years but in recent years the municipality gained access and so began the restoration to what we now see. We actually were very lazy the day we visited and drove our car up to the top but I noticed one lady with her children parked

With help from the archaeologists the very path has traced that was trodden by those building the tower and now stone seats have been placed at intervals for those more energetic. There is history on our doorstep and we really don’t need to look too far to see it or be apart of it. Directions: Take the N 340 just past the sign Camino del Salida take the turning on the right, you will see a sign for the Watchtower. Follow the road down to the Rambla, take the pathway across the Rambla and you will pass the Spanish Breakers Yard, keep going. The road begins to climb steeply (spare a thought for the poor donkeys carrying their loads to and from the Watchtower). Continue the climb until you reach the top and then enjoy the Vista.

Focusing on smaller area to give our clients a better service. A Brief History
On the border with the province of Murcia. For Menendez Pidal the origin of the placename Huercal-Overa lies in the repopulation of two different villages at the end of the XVI century. The presence of Phoenicians and Greeks (in search of minerals), Carthaginians and Romans is known about. On the summit of Cabezo de la Jara is Escipion Cave, named after a Roman general who is thought to have been here with his army. He died locked up in a tower after being defeated by the Carthaginian general Asdrubal. The Roman emperor Augustus included Huercal-Overa, Purchena and Velez Rubio in the Roman province of Tarraconense. The origin of Huercal-Overa can be pinpointed to the Al-Andalus period. From these times the Arabic castle of Huercal and the castle of Santa Barbara de Overa remain. These make up, together with other fortresses, a secure defence for this part of the Kingdom of Granada. With the Christian conquest it was annexed and donated to the town of Lorca for services rendered in the year 1488. Its population was very depleted, especially that of Overa who preferred to leave rather than renege on their faith. After the War of the Alpujarras (1568-1570) and the expulsion of the Moors, repopulation was started between the years 1572 and 1573, with Overa annexed to Huercal. In the year 1668 it achieved total

independence from Lorca under the name we know today and by means of a purchase document made to the Royal Exchequer. In the War of Independence the events that are recounted about the inhabitants of this village are heroic. Fierce battles were waged in the streets, and on some occasions the village had to be taken house by house. The XIX century is characterized by the increase of population. In 1805 it had 2,186 inhabitants, in 1834 it had 3,315 and in 1887 it had 15,631 inhabitants between the village itself and the countryside. Parallel to this demographic increase, there was an increase and expansion of the village buildings. During the XX century the different international conflicts and above all the Civil War affected the village. In the surrounding AREA there still remains an AREA of trenches. It also suffered the long postwar period and emigration. From the seventies onwards this land through which such illustrious travellers as Gerald Brenan, Virginia Wolf and Juan Goytisolo have passed, opened itself up with new hope. www.andalucia.org

others had invested more than a million and a half euros to leave it closed, so we got a great project that today materializes. A project in which we have worked hard for months, with nerves and excitement for many who are here today, our mayor was very clear it had to become an opportunity for entrepreneurs and a benchmark “ Navarro added that “continue along the lines that have marked entrepreneurship promotion and aid for trade, which among others have set up a municipal aid of 2,500 euros for new entrepreneurs. An initiative with which we were pioneers in the province and has been imitated by other nearby villages. We want this business to be part of the day to day operation of Huércal-Overa, a town that grows with pioneering initiatives for the benefit of its citizens and work continues to remain a leader in this area and in the province “. all can agree that when we finally lay our heads on the pillow we’d like to actually go to sleep, thank you. Nothing is more annoying than insomnia, and the evidence is piling up that sleep is essential for good health. Although the research is a bit spotty when it comes to which foods help or harm sleep, anecdotal evidence does suggest that certain items consumed right before bedtime are more likely to be “sleep promoters” while others may be “sleep stealers,” says Russell Rosenberg, Ph.D., CEO of the National Sleep Foundation.

Have you suffered from Strokes Arthritis Spondilitis (Arthritis of spine) Hip replacement Knee Hip or Back Surgery. Sophia’s rehabilitation suite consists of 6 machines designed to aid those who are rehabilitating from an illness or injury and are unable to under go “normal” exercise. The user can put as little or as much effort into the exercise as they feel comfortable with. By gradually building up strength as they progress, the user benefits from regular exercise in ways that would be impossible using conventional equipment. Only 30 minutes is required on the rehabilitation machines.
When people have suffered an injury or recently had surgery, sports injury rehab is vital to get your strength back in the affected areas. Ironically, where people want to give up, in many cases this is exactly the time they most need to be exercising. What holds most people back is not knowing how sports rehab on an injury can be achieved without causing further damage. DID YOU KNOW? Using the Toning tables as exercise is one the best ways of losing fat. Why? Because the more muscle you have the more calories you burn throughout the day. A pound of muscle burns about 60 calories a day, while a pound of fat only burns about 5 calories a day.

Why? It metabolizes quickly in your system and causes you to wake up multiple times during the night. One study found that a glass of bourbon or vodka mixed with caffeine-free soda at bedtime increased the amount of time women spent awake during the night by 15 minutes. It also reduced nightly sleep time by 19 minutes and diminished quality of sleep. If you don’t refrain from alcohol for our own benefit, do it for your mate. “Alcohol makes snoring worse so it will impact you and your potential bed partner,” said Rosenberg. http://www.health.com/

The stratospheric fat content of this particular fast food is guaranteed to be a sleep killer. Fat stimulates the production of acid in the stomach, which can spill up into your esophagus, causing heartburn. Fatty foods can also loosen the lower esophageal sphincter, the barrier between the stomach and the esophagus, making it even easier for acid to get in all the wrong places. In fact, there’s almost nothing to recommend this kind of high-fat, salt-laden indulgence if you want to preserve your health, including the quality of your sleep.
Milk Best
You may have fond memories of your mother or grandmother making you a glass of warm milk to help you fall asleep. This may not be just an old wives’ tale. Milk contains the amino acid tryptophan, a precursor to the brain chemical serotonin. Although the topic is a controversial one, some people believe that tryptophan and serotonin might make it easier to sleep. Or maybe a simple glass of milk brings back soothing childhood memories, which help you drift off.
Wine Worst Alcohol of any kind is “terrible” for sleep, says Rosenberg.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer each program in a secure, Bytes. Android Has a Big Security Problem, isolated area of memory And Antivirus Apps Can’t Do Much to Help. where they can’t interact Wow! That is an opening statement and a with any other running program – clever or what! The only drawback is that half! Now I have to back it up! First and foremost, Android is rarely if the virus can gain access to the ‘Root’ user updated (it is generally too much effort for a level, IT CAN DO ANYTHING IT WANTS tablet / phone manufacturer to spend time TO! The “sandboxes”, thankfully, do an and money upgrading, for free, the Android excellent job of preventing this. Now here’s the best bit, Android, is like OS that is on our devices)! When you take this into account and then consider that, every other OS in as much as there are built as with all OS’s, there are people out there in security safeguards to prevent virus’s who want, desperately, to help part you coming down with software. It had been a long time since I’d journeyed back to Blighty; so leaving the 25C weather behind I made my way to the airport. Being early for a change I was cursing nearly half an hour later as the car parking people were late collecting my car at the drop off. Getting to the scanners as usual I was stopped by a bleep; this being the day after the Paris atrocities it was only to be expected. Instead of the usual pat down and being asked to remove my shoes the man had a swab and wiped my clothes and hands and then put the material into a machine. I told him all it would detect was egg mayonnaise sandwich and he laughed and waved me through when the machine said yes. I wonder what would happen if someone gets swabbed after making a joint? Annoyingly nowadays any airport journey to departures involves walking through duty free. There are evil smells everywhere with impossibly cheerful, impeccably groomed dolly birds (and boys) trying to spray noxious sprays on unsuspecting traveller’s exposed skin. Once through I held back the urge to buy over priced underwhelming food and drinks; instead I finished my egg mayo sarnies. Then

Time flies! Coming up to Advent already! But what, you may well ask, is Advent? Well the Christian season of Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, and it’s Advent Sunday, not Christmas nor January 1st, that starts the Church Year. The name is derived from the Latin ‘adventus’, meaning “coming”, particularly of course referring to the coming of Christ. So, we have Advent Calendars, counting down the days to Christmas, often with a treat, like a chocolate beneath each door – though these usually start from December 1st, rather than Advent Sunday (29th November in 2015), so losing me 2 chocolates this year! So yes Advent, rather than mid September as seems normal in Britain these days, should be when we start to prepare for the coming of Christmas. And it’s right and proper that we should; for our annual celebration of the birth of God himself as a human child in utter humility and love to all, deserves thorough preparation. But of equal importance; in accordance with its original tradition, Advent should also be a time to reflect on Christ’s assurance that he would in time return; with the challenge that gives us to be ready, lest we prove ourselves no better prepared than folk were at
the time of his birth. But can we in these educated times really believe in Christ’s return? Aren’t such notions more science-fiction than reality? Well yes, that may be, but surely that’s an essential attribute of the Divine; to define the rules of creation, rather than to be bound by them. For to limit belief only to things we’ve seen and understand necessarily excludes acceptance of any possibility of God, rejects faith and destroys hope, leaving little joy in life. So yes, I firmly believe in Christ’s resurrection and that he will one day physically return to, in some amazing way, raise all back to life. I may not understand how, but if he really is the creator God, then why should that present any problem to Him? I spied proof that the world has gone bureaucratically mad as a uniformed woman was patrolling the floor photographing litter. I watched as she pirouetted about the floor stopping every so often to take out her camera and take souvenir snaps of the things people had dropped. I wondered why instead she didn’t just pick the litter up. Landing in Gatwick and turning my phone on I wondered why my wife had left messages asking which terminal I was in. All became clear as the pilot calmly told us that we’d been switched from North to South due to an ‘incident’. Once off the plane that ‘incident’ had meant the evacuation of one terminal into the one I was now in. A quick Twitter trawl lead me to the ‘Daily Wail’ which hysterically told me that a madman armed with guns and possibly bombs had tried to attack an EasyJet desk then run away. Only afterwards did the gun turn out to be an airgun but better to disrupt 10,000 people than take the risk after the day’s before awfulness in Paris. I stepped into arrivals to find those 10,000 people standing in my way. There was no signage or anyone in charge for me to ask
how to walk the 50 yards to the railway station so I followed one of the 10,000’s advice and 5 minutes later was standing outside the airport with no station in sight. Back tracking to the airport I finally worked my way into the station only to find I’d missed the once hourly train by a whisker. Keeping calm I then spent a fiver on a newspaper and bottle of water; water that cost me three times the price of a litre of petrol. How can anyone regularly afford to let the train take the strain in the UK? Four short trips over a few days cost as much as my return flight from Spain. Plus trains were late, cancelled, replaced by buses and worst of all; often the toilets were closed. My flights in total were twenty times further and twice as long time wise. Plus I got a free sandwich and drink on the plane and the toilets worked.

Franco’s remains should be removed Spain lawyer Garzon A prominent Spanish lawyer has launched a petition calling for the removal of the remains of former dictator General Franco from their official resting place. Baltasar Garzon said the Valley of the Fallen should instead be converted into a victims’ memorial. The move comes on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Franco’s death. H e defeated the Republicans in Spain’s bloody 1936-39 civil war, ruling until 1975. Spain made the successful transition to democracy afterwards, but Franco’s legacy remains painful, with families still searching for the remains of loved ones. Political parties at the time agreed to amnesty for crimes committed during and after the civil war, meaning that no trials have been held. In the petition, Mr Garzon calls for the removal of Franco-era symbols from the site and says there should be an official apology.
Strictly Week 9 from the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool
With another action packed professional Lindy Hop opening the show, I was really excited as it was coming from the home of Ballroom Dancing in Blackpool. A venue much larger than the studio in London and one which normally sorts the men out from the boys as it is much more difficult to ‘fill’ a floor of this size. Opening were Jay McGuinness and Aliona and a Salsa. With a very clean slick performance and an ease with the armography that you didn’t know who the celebrity was. Jay was so relaxed this week and so at home amongst other professional dancers with his performance. I awarded him 9 and the judges 36. Jamelia and Tristan were next with a Quickstep. Although they covered this big floor well, I found the quality of her performance wanting, her frame was not tight enough, she wasn’t closing her feet anywhere nor pointing her toes. I gave her 6 and the judges a very generous 31. Following were Anita Rani and Gleb and a Paso Doble. Performed to a traditional piece of Spanish music Anita displayed excellent intensity and superb use of flamenco arms and lines. She just fails to point her toes which stopped me from giving her a 10 so a 9 and the judges 37. Next to dance were Katie Derham and Anton with an American Smooth. Nerves again marred her performance half way through. This seems to happen every week, nerves take over, she goes wrong then finds it very difficult to pull it back. This week her dance went lumpy from the middle which she found
“We have a serious problem with coming to terms with what was done and find solutions. It’s very Spanish to wait for the storm to pass,” said Mr Garzon. Spanish dictator General Franco Franco was dictator of Spain for almost four decades The Valley of the Fallen was built largely by prisoners of war. More than 30,000 dead from both sides in the civil war were moved there on Franco’s orders in a bid to promote reconciliation. Instead, it became widely seen as a divisive reminder of the years of dictatorship. There have been previous appeals for the removal of Franco’s remains but they have been resisted by the governing Popular Party. Mr Garzon is best known for helping to secure the arrest of the former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet in London in 1998. http://www.bbc.com/
so polished. I gave her 8 and the judges 34. Closing the show were Kellie Bright and Kevin with a Quickstep. Even though it was very well danced with a myriad of kicks, flicks and skips I found it didn’t wow me and left me a bit flat but nice job. I awarded her 8 and the judges 37.
difficult to recover from. I awarded her 7 and the judges an extremely generous 35. Peter Andre and Janette then performed a 60s themed Jive. The pop choreography was great but once he started Jive basic - oh dear! His Jive chasses didn’t happen, his weight was in his heels, he looked heavy and Jive has to be on the toes and light footed. I gave him 7 and he ended up in bottom slot with 29 from the judges. Georgia May Foote and Giovanni were next with an American Smooth. Wow! Such superb control, elegance, body contact which never moved whether dancing the turns, fleckerls (circular movement on the spot) or pivots. A fantastic performance which gained another 10 from me (she had one last week too) and 38 from the judges. Helen George and Aljaz followed with a Charleston. This unfortunately wasn’t Helen’s dance. She somehow looked heavy legged - is she getting burned out? Despite it being an action packed Charleston, I found it looked a bit ‘careful’ she needed to let go a bit more and not be quite
In the bottom two this week were Peter and Jamelia with Jamelia leaving the show after the judges 3 to 1 vote on the dance off. Next week back to the studio and normality but the going is really getting tough. With only a couple of weaker dancers left it literally could go anyway. A weak dance from anyone and they could find themselves out of the show. Can’t wait for next week can you? Why not come and join us at one of our classes for the ‘strictly’ gossip, in the meantime ‘ - Keep Dancing! By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635 584 431

Business move’s out of barcelona!!
The Catalan independence drive is causing hundreds of businesses to leave the region out of fear of political and legal instability. So far this year, 683 companies have departed Catalonia – including the chain Derby Hotels, multinational Suez and agri-food giant Valls Companys – with many of them transferring to Madrid. Together the firms represent combined sales of over €1.5 billion. According to ratings agency Axesor, 3,286 businesses have left Catalonia since 2012, when the separatist drive began gaining traction. Barcelona says the Spanish state is trying to “attack the reputation” of the Catalan economy The drain does not come as a complete surprise, given that various business leaders had repeatedly warned about the risk of continuing down the path of unilateral independence. Shortly before the September 27 regional elections – which were
won by the separatist Junts pel Sí alliance – several Catalan companies had said they would reconsider their presence in Catalonia if unilateral independence were declared. Among those that issued the warning were banks, publishing house Planeta, bridal wear chain Pronovias and pharmaceutical company Indukern. Employer associations have underscored the climate of “legal insecurity” in Catalonia and the region’s particularly high taxes. Think tank Círculo de Economía, whose board includes representatives from Catalonia’s biggest companies, said the separatist motion recently passed by the Catalan parliament signaling the beginning of the breakup with Spain has been detrimental to investment in the region. LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com Problems with a sale on the day of signature at the notary. The risk of loosing the claim of 100% exemption on Capital gains tax by doing things wrong. Question: I am English, resident in Spain , married, of 70 years of age and purchased a property 20 years ago in Mojacar in my name only. My intention was to sell and claim the 100% exemption from capital gains tax on the basis that I am selling my main home and am over 65 .The other day at the notary I was told I could not achieve this withoght signature of my husband on the deed of sale. My solicitor had not told me this and my husband is not in Spain. What is happening as I understand that I could sell withoght my husband. Answer: (the original question was much longer with a lot more detail and involving other matters also ). In Spain if you are English and have purchased a property on your own you are allowed to sell the property on your own also , but you must state on the deed to be able to do so that the property is not your main family home (this is the norm and is automatically written into deed with just one spouse selling) as otherwise the notary will ask for the signature of the spouse (this is
because spouse can have certain claims over the family home and the notary requires the signature to cover himself). You our or your solicitor had obviously mentioned to the notary that your intention was to claim the 100% exemption based on the fact that you where selling your main home and where over 65. The notary was concerned that placing the standard clause in which you manifest it is not your main family home (necessary for you to sign withoght your husband) would compromise your position with the tax office with regards to the claim of the the exemption for being over 65 which you would only be entitled to if you are selling your main home. The notary is absolutely correct and it is lucky that he detected this and mentioned this to you before you signed (as this is not his job as it is in fact your solicitor that should have had this covered) as signing the clause would have made the claim of the exemption close to impossible. and upfront meeting of the family with a solicitor at an early stage of the illness is a very good idea. MUNDI
Imagine you are planning to move from your current house to a new one, and want to donate your current home to your children. You may be better off selling the house and giving your children the money. Fiscal costs Under this scenario you have the following fiscal costs: • Your child must pay donation tax (Impuesto sobre donaciones, ISD). Depending on the circumstances and the region of Spain the house is in, you may benefit for a reduction. In Andalusia, the first 120.000 euros cash given to your children for them to buy their first home will have a 99% tax reduction if they are under 35 years of age. If your child is disabled, the amount eligible for the deduction increases up to 180.000 euros with no age limit. • You will have to pay IRPF (income tax) as if you had sold the house. The difference between the purchase price and the sale value of your home will be subjected to capital gains, even though you have given the house away. You are exempt from this if you are over 65. Best case scenario You won't be liable for IRPF capital gains in this scenario if you are over 65 years old and this is your primary residence, as the sale of your primary residence is exempt from capital gains, even if you aren't planning to buy a new home. The alternative : selling and donating the cash If you are moving to a new home worth the same or more than your current home, you may be better off selling the old one and donating the money to your children. In this scenario: • IRPF capital gains obtained in the selling of your primary residence may be exempt from taxation when the total amount obtain from the sale is reinvested
into the purchase of a new primary residence (or the repairs of one that will now be your primary home). If there is an outstanding mortgage on the house then capital gains is payable on the amount left once the capital of the mortgage has been paid off. • You can then donate the money from the sale to your children and let them purchase a house. The cost of donating the money will be similar to the cost of donating the asset (your old home). • ITP or IVA costs. The trouble is that your children will have to pay either ITP or IVA on the purchase of their new home. In summary If you donate your old home to your children and buy a new one, you will have to pay capital gains and donation tax on the value of the home. But under certain circumstances, if you sell your home and give them the cash, you can be exempt from capital gains. Your children then use part or all of the money to buy a new home, although they must then pay ITP / IVA on the house purchase. Therefore, this scenario is only worthwhile if the cost of ITP/IVA is less than the tax savings on the IRPF. Information given is for guidance purposes only. Your actual circumstances may vary. The search
Alqueria was stunned into silence. When one considers that silence for any Alquerian is an act of great self-control so for the whole Pueblo to be silent must suggest the enormity of the crime. Manuela apparently kidnapped. The Hill People blamed the Newcomers who denied any knowledge of the disappearance. One helpful individual suggested she may have been kidnapped by intelligent beings from another world. This argument doesn’t hold water however as these beings would have to have visited Alqueria in order to do the body snatching and anyone visiting Alqueria of their own free will and on purpose doesn’t demonstrate much in the way of intelligence. The menfolk of Alqueria began a systematic and painstaking search of the Village. The women however didn’t show anything like the enthusiasm of their male counterparts and adopted a wait and see policy as an alternative. In order for the Newcomers to prove that they had no hand in the disappearance they allowed their homes to be searched. When the womenfolk heard of this they changed their minds instantly. They weren’t going to pass up the chance of snooping around the private possessions and the intimate places of their enemy and took part with gusto. All this searching and counter searching meant that the conflict and civil unrest was put on hold with the mutual consent of both barrios, one of the few times Alqueria has been truly united. The
viewpoint
Village was searched from the top of the castle battlements to the depths of the Bar La Golondrina’s cellar. Frederico Alkraapo was given the task of searching Loco Paco’s property, he is still receiving counselling and is in such a state of mental confusion he even considered joining the Tory party.
During the evening, when house searching had been mixed with liberal quantities of Remitroot wine and whisky the Town was in uproar. Some of the more personal items were paraded through the streets for all to see. One lady of advancing years was seen holding one of Manuela’s ‘appliances’ with a look of woman who has recognised a long lost friend but forgotten their name. It was when these proceeding were in full swing that an apparition appeared, or seemingly an apparition. Manuela calmly sauntered through the stunned, silent crowd quietly wondering what all the fuss was about. When questioned she refused to answer any questions and failed to offer any reason for her disappearance. An enigmatic smile and dishevelled hair gave some clue and also fuelled many theories ranging from the improbable to the physically impossible.
A Bit Late
In response to the summons to hear the results of my biopsy we arrived punctually at Huercal-Overa Hospital. I had dressed confident in the knowledge that this encounter would take the form of a discussion, but Pete queried whether I was wearing the right clothes, suggesting that something easier to get out of and into again might not be more appropriate. However, I knew better – I had been X-rayed and scanned more thoroughly than the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun, there could not possibly be anything more to be learnt by sight. I entered the hallowed sanctum on the command of Nursie, closely followed by Pete, who had noticed that husbands, or if not available, a friend, were expected to put in an appearance in a supporting role. We sat expectantly, and were told the anticipated news without drama by the quietly spoken gentle-faced Consulta. Then Pete was proved right – he needed to have a look! I struggled out of my top and abandoned my bra, wishing that I had not worn one in the first place. While Nursie typed assiduously next door he surveyed my frontage solemnly, both face-on and in profile. He had the contemplative look of one who is viewing a priceless portrait by an Old Master and has to present a learned dissertation later on the subject. Then he very gently felt both boobs, comparing the offending one with its blameless companion - never have my two best features been treated with such totally dispassionate yet tender care - I

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk am sure that he would be able to constructed an accurate 3-D model purely from memory, so intense and concentrated was his scrutiny. The signal that the touchy-feely bit was completed was when he stood back and removed his gloves, triggering Nursie to abandon her keyboard and hurry in with a small towel, which she held suspended over my upper half. The conversation then recommenced with us standing opposite each other while Nursie held the modesty towel between us. He gave an in-depth clinical description of the findings of both the biopsy and his examination before leaving me to dress with the determination that in future I will not wear a bra to any breast-related consultation. However, although I applaud Nursie’s efforts to preserve my decorum, I couldn’t help feeling that her efforts were a little late – by now the Consulta had an indepth knowledge of my lady bits!

NHW Zurgena
OR 40€ FOR ONE YEAR
We are to hold our annual general meeting on Tuesday 1st December at La Vida Restaurant at 5.0pm. This is going to be a very important meeting because, for the nearly 10 years the scheme has been running, it may well have to discontinue. Over these years we have had to rely on a few community minded people to form the committee and manage the affairs. At the last two AGMs we have had fewer than 15 people attend which, given that our membership is in excess of 200, is a very poor turnout and reinforces the belief in the few remaining committee members of the lack of support for the scheme. It will be put to the AGM that in the event of another poor turnout or lack of volunteers to man the committee that the scheme be scrapped and a decision made as to what to do with the remaining funds. This being the outcome would be great pity and deprive the community of a supportive and helpful crime prevention tool. It comes also at a time when we have an ongoing series of house burglaries. It may be that due to the lack of crime over the previous few years that apathy has become the issue but as always once crime does, inevitably, occur people look to NHW to provide support. In addition to that the Town Hall of Zurgena is in the early stages of developing an emergency plan and it was hoped to use the framework of NHW to establish points of communication for such a plan. This obviously will need to rethought should the meeting conclude that NHW should fold. This is a plea for everyone in the community of Zurgena to show support for the scheme and attend the meeting and for there to be sufficient volunteers to man the committee. The main roles which require filling are the chairman and secretary, although there are also some areas where the coordinators wish to stand down. The other roles are filled by people who will be willing to continue, even though some of them have been doing it for a long time. These two roles are critical for the scheme but require very little work. Estimate less than 10 hours in the year! If you are interested in maintaining NHW in Zurgena then please show your support by attending the AGM. It will last less than an hour!

Firstly we wish to announce the Christmas Carol Concert for 2015 on December 16th at 6.00pm. As you know, this has been Mo Dalton´s event for some years but this year she will unfortunately not be with us. We have arranged, with her approval, the “Rose Singers” to join us to sing some of their Christmas medley and also for us to join them in some of their songs. There is a rumour that “The Thorns” may also be joining them for a few special numbers! Jose Jerez is looking to provide the Marquee (hopefully decorated) as we hope to have a good size audience and have to have it outside, along with some heating. We also understand that a special menu will be available in the restaurant and there will be a few snacks and Mulled Wine as per the usual with the singing. ALSO, though we have recently stated that we will not have any more music before next April, I have been approached by a newly formed group in the area, “Bailey´s Cream”, who wish to give a gig at Los Pastores at 13.30 next Thursday . I am awaiting confirmation from the musicians for this special appearance of a new professional musician to the area with the band. Many thanks, and hope to see you all supporting us where possible.
The Branch meets on the third Tuesday in the month at 14.30 hrs at the El Paraiso Restaurant, located in Jardin del Mar 3, which is located very near Carrefour. If you would like information please contact the Chairman on 692508916 or Welfare on 615048892 or visit the Website www.rafacb.com

Book Review
Lady of the Shades by Darren Shan
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
Shan is a successful writer of children’s horror stories. His first attempt at writing for adults didn’t do particularly well although he did acquire an adult following with the publishing of The City Trilogy and then Lady as he affectionately calls it. The idea for Lady was conceived in 1999 and the book was finally published in 2012, 13 years in the making! The book was based around the old film noir movies such as Double Indemnity and Hell’s Horizon. Including a number of ghosts who haunt the protagonist because of his murky past was Shan’s additional contribution to this popular genre. In exploring the boundaries of a dark supernatural thriller Shan admits to his purpose which was “to really mess with the minds of readers.” What he does in fact, is to “mess” initially with the mind of Ed, the main character who is forced into questioning what is real and what is unreal. We discover the truth when Ed discovers it but what is fascinating is that we rarely understand the truth. It’s a bit like saying that the goalposts are constantly changing. The story has a dramatic opening with an assassination in Chile with a graphic description, typical of Shan’s style: “His head exploded in a cone of bone, brain and blood.” Then we discover that the assassin has been approached by the “tight-fisted gangster” Mikis Menderes to perform another “operation.” The thriller angle is developed from the start, Ian Fleming style, engaging and gory. Ed is an American writer, interested in the paranormal and SHC-Spontaneous Human Combustion. His main belief is that ghosts might be the result of a “violent, unnatural death.” He meets Joe in London who shares his interests but all is not what it seems! The pair are conducting some ghostly research for the new novel:”immersing himself in the murky world of the dead” is how Ed describes it. He admits to “hovering on the abyss of an insane pit” but he is determined to prove that ghosts are real and that his mind is not “deluded.” We are given insight into his deep insecurities and disturbed mind constantly questioning his own sanity throughout the novel. He thrives

on danger and finds “normality” tedious. “The quest for answers has kept me sane.” The shades represent the apparitions that haunt hum and the lady is Deleena Emerson who Ed falls passionately in love with. And yet is she another of Ed’s spectres? Ed knows that the apparitions want him destroyed and the story reveals horrendous details of Ed’s past showing cruelty and ruthlessness. Hard to believe for a writer of fiction. He becomes infatuated and obsessed with Deleena the “ghost of the girl” he thinks about constantly and this distracts him from writing his novel although she does have a calming effect on Ed and makes him feel “different, less complicated and reserved.” It is a “chaste affair” with feelings of lust and longing without the sex! Ed becomes hopeful that she will cure him of his ills and “banish the spectre of the ghosts.” The two major themes are betrayal and deception and as the novel progresses the revelation becomes apparent that Ed’s “creature of the shadows” the love of his life doesn’t exist. Murders ensue followed by a dabbling in the paranormal and a visit to a mystic to make contact with Deleena’s spirit and discover the truth. Shan plays mind games with Ed and of course the reader until the bitter and twisted truth rears its ugly head. Ed’s soul is destroyed and he plunges into hell a broken man bearing maudling thoughts of death. “I’ve been a figure in a tragic play. Now I must accept my fated end with the same dignity and resignation as Othello or Macbeth.” The fatal flaw? Greek tragedy? Shakespearian tragedy? Call it what you like. Dark and chilling but thrilling. Publisher: Orion Books. ISBN: 978-409-4360-4

Bathroom Cleaning Shortcuts
Holidays often mean a full house—and more foot traffic in your bathrooms. Give your lavatories luster with these clever uses for household staples
For Spotty Mirrors, Try Black Tea
Tannic acid in the tea helps remove water spots. Pour room-temperature tea into a spray bottle, and wipe with a lint-free cloth
For Cloudy Shower Doors, Try Dryer Sheets
The fabric-softening sheets contain ingredients that cut through soap scum. Just dampen with water before wiping down glass surfaces.
For Rust Rings, Try Lemon Juice
The fruit's acidity will help dissolve the stains left behind by shaving-cream cans and other metal containers. To prevent future rust buildup, coat the bottom ring of cans with clear nail polish.
For Dull Faucets, Toothpaste

The fine abrasives in non-gel toothpastes make them ideal for shining up chrome faucets and fixtures.

Land Rover Discovery Sport Safety award
to see it in person is to do a double take at just how diminutive it is. It looks like it’s always farther away than it is. At 180.7 inches long, it’s about nine inches longer than the Evoque but still a couple inches shy of competitors like the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.
INSTRUMENTED TEST Land Rover seemingly loves oddly proportioned vehicles. Look at the LR4: A concrete parasol could hardly look more top-heavy. And since the Holden Efijy never went into production, the Range Rover Evoque became the industry’s first factory lead sled, albeit one with its skirts hiked up over muck boots. The new Discovery Sport is another creatively proportioned Rover. In photos, it looks compact, but

This vehicle was crash tested by Thatcham Research on behalf of euro NCAP. The damage is the result of a 40mph frontal impact, and its best overall NCAP score of all cars tested in 2014 has helped earn the Discovery Sport the What Car? Safety Award. Most impressive is just how far Land Rover has gone beyond the required standards for a five-star NCAP rating. Adult protection is rated as the second-highest score of the year, child and pedestrian protection are highly credible and the safety assist rating dwarfs that of rivals, aided by standard-fit AEB across the range and an external pedestrian airbag. The only demerit comes because the AEB system doesn’t yet recognise pedestrians; but then safety is a constantly evolving crusade, where even the best have room for improvement.
It feels small from the driver’s seat—in a good way. There’s sufficient space, but sightlines give a good feel of where the car’s corners are. You sit high, with a nice view down through the side windows and over the hood. The back seat is likewise spacious, with ample room for six-footers to sit behind sixfooters. Here, too, visibility is excellent—certainly better than in the Evoque, with its style-over-substance roofline pinching the rear windows to almost comedic slits. Then again, the Discovery Sport is a real vehicle, whereas the Evoque is a fashion accessory, a turbocharged purse poodle. Land Rover offers a third-row seat in the Disco Sport, but our test example didn’t have it. Nor did we want it. Third-row seats in trucklets this size tend to be so small that children outgrow them at about the time they become self-sufficient enough to sit that far out of Mom and Dad’s reach. However, no other luxury ute in the Discovery Sport’s size offers a third row, so if your only requirements are that neighbours be impressed by your key fob and seatbelt count, then you should know that the third-row seat is a $1750 option that includes HVAC vents and a USB port for the wayback inmates.
Speeding motorists are handing over 470,000 euro to the DGT every single day, a 30% increase on last year. In the first three quarters of 2015, 127.4 million euro has been collected from drivers caught by fixed and mobile radars. In 2014, the total was 129.6 million, increasing from 124 million in 2013 and 120 million in 2012. In the current trend continues, the end of year figure will be almost 170 million euro for 2015. The figures show a continual increase in the trend for speeders being fined, increasing from 355,075 euro per day last year to the 470,396 euro per day currently. The DGT believe that the increase is not caused entirely by an increase in speed by individuals, but by an increase in the number of vehicles using the roads. Similarly, the DGT also say that despite the figures for speeding fines increasing, other sanctions show a downward trend. Another possibility is that traffic studies influenced the decision to drastically modify the plan for speed control on the roads. In February, following a 40% increase in speed related deaths in January, it was announced that more focus would be given to secondary roads, which account for 80% of all related fatalities, a figure which compares directly with the 81% increase in speeding motorists caught on this type of road. Speeding fines have something of a unique character in so much as many people who get caught speeding fail to acknowledge or accept their own failings and many of those believe that the fines are nothing more than a way for the government to increase taxation. In fact, a recent survey states that 90% of speeding driver believe that their fine is nothing more than a hidden tax. However, the DGT point out that the taxable element of fines has reduced, despite the increase in revenue, dropping from 392 million euro in 2011 to 458 million in 2014. Former Director General of the DGT, Pere Navarro, says that “Traffic law remains the law most violated in our country with nearly 13 million penalty proceedings a year between all administrations, which indicates that fines are necessary”, whilst also pointing out the need to raise awareness amongst drivers of the need to reduce speed, because, “If we only do surveillance, control and punishment, there will be a rejection of the citizens”, because they will not understand the real reasons behind the sanctions and the fact that inappropriate speed is one of the main contributing factors to road traffic incidents and fatalities, and, therefore, the reality of the sanctions is that they are there to save lives.

Sophias Gymnastics
We would like to congratulate the gymnasts from Staceys Gymnastics Club at Sophias in Arboleas. Three places were awarded this month, One award was to Ruby (The photo of the little girl in splits) She is new to the club and is already showing great potential, in such a short period of time, almost cartwheeling on the high beam by herself and backward walkovering. The second award goes to Rocio, (the other little gymnast on the floor) Always working very hard with a constant smile,( Especially on the inflatable Tumble track!!) she is an absolute pleasure to coach. The third award goes to our little Leon, (on the bar) The last four weeks, he has made such a turnaround, I
have never seen him work so hard,
Vaulting is his specialty) he really does deserve this award! All the gymnasts need a shout out, as they have all stepped up their game in the last couple of months, but between you and me, this maybe down to the medal, trophy ceremony closely approaching. If anyone would like to come and support us, it will be held on Saturday 5th December, in front of the Arboleas Ayuntamiento from 8.00pm onwards, there, we will be watching to see who will win the most improved and dedicated gymnast. It just leaves me to say to thank you to everyone, that help supports this Gymnastics Club, without you we wouldn’t be where we are today. Onwards and Upwards! If anyone wishes to join the club, then please feel free to contact Stacey on 622 129 702.

19th Hole Golf Society Cucador
Thursday 19th November, 42 members of the 19th Hole Golf Society descended on the beautifully maintained Aguilon Golf Course to play a Two Division Stableford competition. With perfect conditions it was no surprise that the scoring and incidents far exceeded the expectations of most. Sean Curtis was uncatchable in Division 1, his score of 43 points which included 10 pars and 4 birdies was more than enough to take 1st place eclipsing, the ever improving Brian (Dee) Lowden, with 38 points. In the same Division Nigel Greenwoods whoops and screams could be heard in most corners of Aguilon following his Birdie, holing in from some 30 meters’ from the green on the notorious 5th hole. In Division 2 Tony Lea was pushed very hard by Jerry Edwards and Geoff Smith holding on to 1st place with 37 points. But all this fades into insignificance with the Eagle on the 3rd Par 3 (Hole in One) by Mike Esposito even the green keeper attending a greenside bunker let out a cheer and did a lap of honour of the bunker. In keeping with his quiet unassuming demeanour, Mike didn’t want any fuss over the achievement, or was it the natural characteristic of this canny Scotsman coming into play? He did stand a round back at La Vida for all who attended. Well done Mike. Results - Division 1 - 1st Sean Curtis 43 points (9), 2nd Brian (Dee) Lowden 37 points (21), 3rd Mike Esposito 34 points (13). Division 2 - 1st Tony Lea 37 points (28), 2nd Jerry Edwards 36 points (28), 3rd Geoff Smith 33 points (28). Nearest The Pins - No 3 Mike Esposito – Hole in One - No 8 Nick Pogson, No 12 Brian Hunt, No 14 Tommy Seed, No 16 (in Two) Mike Esposito, N017 Syd Walker Twos - 4th Geoff Smith, 12th Sean Curtis. Thanks to all the members and guests who support the 19th Hole Golf Society. The 19th hole G/S arranges weekly games at various courses in the area, our home course, which we play fortnightly, is Aguilon. The Turre Open Mixed Rinks
Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Turre Open Mixed Rinks on Sunday 1st November 2015. As the name suggests it is open to any club to enter a team. We had a very good response probably due to the fact that the Cabrera Avalon Invitation was being held two weeks later so teams that were entered in that competition used this one to see how they performed. It was a very cold, blustery day but at least the wind kept the rain away. Fourteen teams entered and all clubs in the area were represented which was excellent. The competition is played on a rinks round robin format over 7 ends and the teams split into two groups, the winners of Group A playing the winners of Group B in the
final. Group A winners were Brian and Pat Marsh with John and Sue Sephton against Group B winners David and Sue Jenkins with Trevor Young and Margaret Schofield with Margaret stepping in at the last minute to replace a member of the team who was taken ill. The conditions for the final were not ideal as the light was fading fast but that did not deter spectators staying behind to watch. Trevor’s team got off to a good start but John’s team fought back and after 4 ends were drawing 2-2. Trevor’s team then went ahead and on the very last end Trevor’s last bowl was a gem putting his team 6-2 ahead. Sadly for John, who had the last bowl of the final, could not do anything about it and Trevor’s team won the final. It has to be said that it was great to see two Cabrera Teams in the final as last year we did not have any. Well done. Photo left to right Trevor Young, Margaret Schofield, Sue and David Jenkins
