Major earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale strikes off Spanish city of Malaga Hit 100 miles south-east of Malaga at 4.22am with depth of 20 miles Shallow quake was 40 miles north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima Quake 100 miles south of Gibraltar followed by 5.3-magnitude tremor
A major earthquake of magnitude 6.1 has struck this morning about 100 miles southeast of Malaga in Spain with a depth of 20 miles, the US Geological Survey said. The quake in the Mediterranean hit at 4.22am UK time almost 40 miles north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 100 miles south of Gibraltar. It was followed by a 5.3-magnitude tremor. The USGS said its initial impact assessment suggested there was ‘a low likelihood of casualties and damage’. In February 2004 a strong 6.3 earthquake that hit near Al Hoceima killed 631 people. 4:22am UK time almost 40 miles north of the Moroccan city of Al Hoceima and 100 miles south of Gibraltar, the US Geological Survey said Malaga is a hugely popular tourist destination for millions of Britons, with temperatures in the coastal city around the 16C to 18C mark this week which will be up to 10C warmer than London. It comes one day after an even stronger 6.8 magnitude quake struck southern Alaska yesterday, which saw several neighbourhoods evacuated after a gas explosion damaged four homes. The earthquake struck 160 miles southwest of Anchorage, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center insisted it was not anticipating a destructive tsunami and that there was no threat to Hawaii. Spanish criminal sentenced to take part in identity parades
Forget prison or a hefty fine, one Spaniard has been ordered by a judge “to take part in police line-ups” after being found guilty of traffic offences. In what many may see as a light punishment, a man caught driving without a licence was told he could avoid a six-month prison sentence and €775 fine if he agreed to undertake line-up duty. He will have to be available between 9am and 3pm Monday to Thursday over a period of nine months starting in March and will only be called if he shares similar characteristics to the suspect. The court in A Coruña in the northwestern region of Galicia made the deal under new guidelines issued by Spain’s Judicary and Ministry of Interior to allow offenders undertaking community service to be used in identity parades. Police have long struggled to find volunteers to take part in identity parades which involve a witness or victim attempting to pick out a suspect from a line-up of similar individuals. The sentence, the first of its kind, serves “an important pilot test in a process that needs better coordination so as to be available to all courts quickly and simply," said Judge Antonio Perez Loma. thelocal.es
Gang nabbed over ten tonne olive heist in southern Spain
Those arrested are believed to be part of an organized network of olive thieves operating in southern Spain. Police in Seville in southern Spain have arrested four members of a dedicated olive-stealing gang and are investigating another five people linked to the theft. The arrests are the fruit of an investigation by the Guardia Civil into the theft of olives from groves in the Sierra Sur region of Seville in November and December 2015. Police said that they suspected the thefts were being carried out by an organized gang - one person responsible for finding the olive grove, while the rest of the gang move in later to pick and steal the olives at a time when the property has as little surveillance as possible. The gang members then load the olives into vehicles and take them to the point of sale, according to police sources. Police believe the four men currently under arrest, who
are of Romanian origin, are members of the organized gang. Officers seized 10,679 kg of olives which have been returned to their rightful owners, according to regional newspaper, El Correo. Farmers in the region had been forced to form their own vigilante groups to carry out night time patrols of olive groves after a recent rise in the number of robberies. With Spanish olive reserves low after the industry suffered two consecutive years of poor seasons, prices have surged since the start of the year by more than fifty percent. And after a long hot summer, 2015 promises to produce a bumper harvest but the downside of high prices and easy pickings is that thieving gangs have moved in to cash in the crop. thelocal.es

Half-price high-speed AVE train tickets for AL/RQ young passengers
A NEW young person's rail card allows teens and 20-somethings to travel on the high-speed AVE link for half price. Rail board RENFE has announced that long-distance fast train tickets booked at least 30 days before travel will attract a discount of 50% for passengers aged 14 to 26 inclusive, or a 40% reduction when booked at least 15 days in advance. For tickets bought on the day or booked less than a fortnight before travel, the usual young person's discount of 30% will apply. From now on, the 14-26 agegroup will, additionally, get 25% off all travel on the outer suburban-cum-provincial lines, the Cercanías, as well as the Avant
and medium-distance trains which are inter-regional but normally a lot cheaper than the AVE as they take up to three times as long to reach their destinations. And the existing Tarjeta Dorada ('gold card') for the over-65s has been extended, with the Tarjeta RENFE Dorada Plus offering even greater deals and discounts through a loyalty scheme. “This is to thank them for using our trains,” says acting minister for public works and infrastructure Ana Pastor. She announced the new rail deals this week at the FITUR tourism trade fair in Madrid, which ended last Sunday. thinkspain.com

US blizzard 2016:
New York begins clear-up after mammoth snowfall
A travel ban in New York City has ended as the east coast of the US begins digging out from the weekend’s massive snowstorm. But in Washington DC, the metro is set to remain closed and air travel in the region faces further disruption. As five states saw snowfall of three feet (91cm) or more, the hazards of shovelling snow were brought home by at least six deaths. A further 12 people have died in other snow-related incidents since Friday.
and to this extent - it was the perfect winter storm
The storm, dubbed Snowmageddon and Snowzilla on social media, is weakening and heading for the Atlantic Ocean. It has affected some 85 million people, cutting power to 200,000 people. The heaviest fall was recorded in Glengary, West Virginia, which had 42ins (107 cm). Some 7,000 flights were cancelled this weekend and disruption is to continue into the working week. Why was there so much snow? Elements often come together to create snow, but not always in the same way
Very strong winds: low pressure moves in one direction and high pressure in another and, much like cogs in a wheel, they increased the wind
A low pressure system was able to transport and circulate huge amounts of moisture north from the Gulf of Mexico The position of the jet stream allowed a low pressure system to be picked up and drawn northwards along the eastern seaboard Very warm air falling into very cold air from the north and mixing meant there was only one thing that would happen - snow
Bite-sized dish given ultimate honour:
World Tapas Day
Turespaña, Spain’s tourism agency, has unveiled plans to promote one of Spain’s most idiosyncratic customs by giving tapas its own day for celebration. Whether it be a humble bar snack served free with a glass of wine or a heavenly morsel created by a Michelin starred chef, Spain has decided that it's high time tapas got the worldwide recognition it deserves. So henceforth, the third Thursday of every June will be known as World Tapas Day, when across Spain and beyond its borders
activities and promotions will be dedicated exclusively to promoting to the finger food. "Gastronomy is becoming increasingly important in tourism attracting more than 9.5 million tourists to Spain in 2015," said Turespaña, announcing the initiative at Madrid’s Fitur, the international tourism trade fair. "Tapas is a symbol of Spain and is considered deserving of being the star of its own World Day because it is representative of our cuisine in miniature, is the focus of our most innovative chefs and because tapas is a word that is recognized in all major languages."
The storm moved especially slowly, leading to more snow being dumped over a long time Many people have taken to streets and parks to enjoy the snow, with a giant snowball fight breaking out on Times Square, New York, overnight. http://www.bbc.com/

Twice a week Total Entertainment in Albox pushes back the chairs and tables for rehearsals for The Luvvies Theatre Group’s presentation of the Vicar of Dibley. Based on the hugely successful comedy about the life of a small village with a female vicar, the TV production has been adapted for the stage, and has retained the essential spirit, the sharp wit and the downright funny bits. However, there are some unexpected problems with the rehearsals: The comedy! Some cast members, and in particular the Producer, have been seen in tears – tears of laughter! This does hold up rehearsals a bit, while they get a grip on themselves! What is so funny about a vicar’s struggles in a rural backwater parish? This play is not just about who arranges the flowers and puts up the hymn numbers – It’s got chocolate, cake (!) the Invisible Man and Velociraptors, not to mention numerous handy hints for those who are less than confident in the art of wooing and proposing marriage! No, no, no, yes it has! And where else but in Dibley would you expect to find the Teletubbies? If the above leaves you feeling a little confused, then come along to the Teatro Pedro Gilabert on Friday 11th, Saturday 12th or Sunday 13th of March, and all will become clear! Or if you fancy being part of this merry gang of actors with the comedy touch, or simply want to know more about the Group, phone 634 346 309, or contact The Luvvies at their website, info@theluvvies.com for more information.

Wow.... 30 years and still going strong. Anniversary of the Dames in Spain.
The Dames in Spain celebrated their 30thAnniversary of the club on the 18th January 21, 2016 with a meeting and a lunch at the Parador Hotel in Mojacar, The Dames was started by a group of ladies in Mojacar 30 years ago just to have a coffee and a chat, then venturing into making cakes, knitting and then selling the home made items to raise money for local charities. They have also sponsored a young disabled boy in Africa with an annual donation to help him through his school years. For the anniversary members arrived from afar to support this special occasion. The meeting started with coffee and a catch up time with everyone, followed by Alison from the Harmony Gym who demonstrated some exercise routines with some of
our members joining in. A presentation was made by Pauline Weeks to the chairwomen, Irene Bensen of a shell montage depicting the 30th anniversary. A raffle was held with many prizes, the proceeds again going to one of the Dames charities. This was followed by a relaxing time on the Terrace enjoying the beautiful warm sunshine to take a pre-lunch drink of Cava, with old and new members enjoying themselves. There were over 60 members and guests for the enjoyable meal which followed. With each member receiving a gift bag of pearls and a pen to mark this special day. After the lunch the Dames were entertained by Elena demonstrating oriental dancing. During the past 30 years, the club has raised well over €80,000. Helping those who need it, whilst entertaining our members. We are very proud and long may we continue. rosyinspain@hotmail.com Mobile. 650607763

He died locked up in a tower after being defeated by the Carthaginian general Asdrubal. The Roman emperor Augustus included HuercalOvera, Purchena and Velez Rubio in the Roman province of Tarraconense. The origin of Huercal-Overa can be pinpointed to the AlAndalus period. From these times the Arabic castle of Huercal and the castle of Santa Barbara de Overa remain. These make up, together with other fortresses, a secure defence for this part of the Kingdom of Granada. With the Christian conquest it was annexed and donated to the town of Lorca for services rendered in the year 1488. Its population was very depleted, especially that of Overa who preferred to leave rather than renege on their faith. After the War of the Alpujarras (1568-1570) and the expulsion of the Moors, repopulation was started between the years 1572 and 1573, with Overa annexed to Huercal. 1A, 04600 Huercal Overa (Almeria) In the year 1668 it achieved total independence from Lorca under the name we

Fierce battles were waged in the streets, and on some occasions the village had to be taken house by house. The XIX century is characterized by the increase of population. In 1805 it had 2,186 inhabitants, in 1834 it had 3,315 and in 1887 it had 15,631 inhabitants between the village itself and the countryside. Parallel to this demographic increase, there was an increase and expansion of the village buildings. During the XX century the different international conflicts and above all the Civil War affected the village. In the surrounding AREA there still remains an AREA of trenches. It also suffered the long postwar period and emigration. From the seventies onwards this land through which such illustrious travellers as Gerald Brenan, Virginia Wolf and Juan Goytisolo have passed, opened itself up with new hope. www.andalucia.org

How frying is 'HEALTHIER than boiling':
Sautéing vegetables in olive oil 'increases antioxidants - helping prevent cancer and diabetes' • Frying vegetables in extra virgin olive oil increases antioxidants in them • Transfers phenols from the oil to the vegetables during cooking process • Phenols and antioxidants are thought to help prevent cancer and diabetes • Experts warn frying does increase calorie content, at the same time
Budding chefs eager to cook up healthy meals for friends and family face a barrage of conflicting advice. There are advocates of the raw food diet, who abhor the thought of cooking. And then there are those who believe black pudding to be the latest superfood. But, now a team of Spanish scientists have added a new theory to the mix. They suggest frying vegetables is a healthier alternative to boiling - as long as the cook is using extra virgin olive oil. Their study found the cooking method increases the antioxidant capacity and phenolic fraction present in raw vegetables typical of a Mediterranean diet. These compounds, the researchers said, help prevent chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes and macular degeneration. 'Therefore, we must stress that frying and sautéing conserve and enhance the phenolic composition.' The Mediterranean diet is characterized by a high intake of vegetables and extra virgin olive oil. These are both an important source of dietary phenols - compounds linked to the prevention of chronic diseases. This kind of antioxidants can be modified during the cooking process, increasing or decreasing their concentrations. The researchers set out to discover whether the choice of cooking medium – olive oil, water, or a mixture of both – had any effect on the amount of these helpful compounds in the cooked food. They conducted an experiment, cooking 120 grams of potato cubes, pumpkin, tomato and eggplant - all without seeds or skin. They used three cooking methods - frying, boiling and cooking with a mix of extra virgin olive oil and water. In the laboratory, the samples were tested by high-performance liquid chromatography to measure levels of moisture, fat, dry matter and the total number of phenols, as well as the measurement of antioxidant

The Ground beneath our feet
The Alboran Sea covers the western Mediterranean between Gibraltar to the west and the Cabo de Gata, Almeria to the east. With Morocco as the African southern land border; it’s a geological active zone. Two continental plates meet a mile under the sea; with the African plate slowly sliding (subducting) under the Eurasian plate to the north. At about seven millimetres a year it’s relatively fast geologically speaking; meaning it’s going to move half a metre in the average person’s lifetime. This movement is responsible for creating the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Rif Mountains in Morocco. Worryingly there have been 50 destructive earthquakes over the last 2000 years averaging one every 40 years or so. One fault line is called the Adra Fault and runs south of Adra to Almeria. Another fault line is called the Carboneras fault running just off the coast of Almeria City northwards through Vera towards Torrevieja. This puts the coastlines of Malaga, Granada, Almeria and Murcia at risk of tidal waves or Tsunamis as and when earthquakes occur under the seabed. If the earthquake were to occur under land then the potential for catastrophe is huge. Almeria City was devastated by earthquakes in 1487, 1522 and 1658. On average a destructive earthquake strikes Almeria, Granada and Murcia every 75 years. In 1829 a 6.9 quake hit Torrevieja leaving 400 dead; this is largest measured over the last 200 years. The last major earthquake
pause for thought
It seems no time ago that I was questioning the wisdom of my parents’ decision to retire South, to Worthing, which, in my mind, appeared largely populated with elderly residents. And, as expected, their time became increasingly taken up with visiting the sick or infirm at home or hospital and running errands for the housebound, until of course it was their turn to be visited and have others tending their needs. So why, I sometimes ask myself, didn’t I heed my own advice? For here am I, 40 years on, just like them, retired to a warmer clime, where the English speaking population are of similar age to myself, requiring much time in visiting the sick or infirm and running errands for the housebound, as well as attending/taking funerals! But the Bible teaches that God understands our needs and aspirations, equipping us to deal with changing circumstances and often relocating us to where our abilities, of which we often are completely unaware, may best be used in His service. So my parents discovered many new skills in their retirement as they faced the challenges of their new surroundings, which kept them busy and extremely happy, working with the local Churches in serving the community to which they had moved, right up to their own
eventual death. And for myself? Well, I’d never written anything other than technical manuals and committee reports before retiring to Spain, and certainly never had anything published. Yet within weeks of arriving I was asked to write this item and discovered to my surprise that I actually could. Similarly, I’d never taken a funeral and actually disliked funerals to the extent of looking for excuses to avoid attending whenever possible. Yet here, that appears to be my prime role in life, and I find it gives immense satisfaction to serve in this way. Just chance? I don’t think so; for with God, nothing is random, but experience suggests that He brought me here and then equipped me for just these and other similar duties. struck the region in Arena del Rey, Granada on Christmas Day 1884 leaving 900 people dead and measured 6.7 on the Richter Scale! This was 130 years ago and Southern Spain is doubly overdue another large quake. In 1755; a massive 8 Magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Lisbon. It created a Tsunami which wrecked the Portuguese coast killing over 60,000 people. The largest documented European earthquake in modern times struck Messina, Sicily just after Christmas in 1908; the resulting vibrations and tsunami killed about 100,000. New buildings in Spain are built on the pillar principle; concrete pillars strengthened internally by a steel frame. These can be seen as skeletal unfinished villas dotted around the countryside; they’re built like that to ensure the structures will stay standing if an earthquake strikes. Older buildings run more of a risk of collapse as do houses built without safety in mind. Just twelve years ago in 2014; a magnitude 6.3 quake hit Al Hoceima in northern Morocco and 631 people were killed as many structures were not built to the same safety standards. This week on Monday 25th at 0522 whilst most were sleeping; a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the same spot. Located 60 kilometres from Al Hoceima and Melilla to the south with Malaga 150 kilometres to the north; injuries were reported in Melilla and
so far one child has sadly been reported as being killed in Morocco. Disturbingly; human activity is suspected of increasing the increasing number of earthquakes across Southern Spain and Northern Morocco. Massive water extraction to feed the water hungry greenhouses is affecting the ground beneath our feet. In Lorca in 2011; a relatively mild earthquake measuring 5.1 caused massive damage and claimed nine lives. The reason for the massive destruction was that it occurred just one kilometre under the town. Since 1960 the water level under Lorca has dropped by 250 metres. All that prehistoric water previously helped with something called Crustal Loading. With the water no longer there the Earth’s Crust simply bounced back up. Five years ago a house sale of mine collapsed as the then buyer was worried in case an earthquake hit Almeria; then just months later Lorca occurred. With water extraction continuing at pace to ensure we can all eat summer salads and vegetables all year round; the client may have a point!

THE BEST PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!! 2016 already! What a whirlwind ride the last year has been! The Blue Sea Villas office opened for business on 27th January 2015 at 77 Paseo del Mediterraneo – Linda and I had a portfolio of c40 properties, no phone line, no internet but with hearts and minds focused on driving Blue Sea Villas forward and making it a trusted, professional and successful business both for ourselves and for Mojacar. We’ve forged new friendships, welcomed clients old and new and introduced new visitors to Mojacar from Spain, the UK and Europe. We have (with Bill, John & Phil) worked 24/7 and loved every minute! So, twelve months have passed and here we are on 27th January 2016 with a fabulous extended Blue Sea Villas Team working with us, two new staff members in our newly refurbished office and our cleaning “dream team” has increased to fourteen; the business has gone from strength to strength and we now have in excess of 160 properties in our portfolio. Our excellent working relationships with respected Sales Agents and other local businesses on “the Beach” continues and we are grateful for the wonderful open and honest opinions and recommendations we have received from them. We have over 1,000 genuine “likes” on our Facebook page, the testimonials from clients have been overwhelming, we truly couldn’t ask for more positivity! So onwards and upwards Blue Sea Villas looks forward to welcoming more friends over the next twelve months – if you are looking for a property to rent, or you have a property you would like us to rent, don’t hesitate to contact us, or pop your head in to the office; we’ll be delighted to see you! If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com
“My father has left me out of his Spanish will and left everything in Spain to his second wife, who we have never liked (it was mutual), and now she is asking for help” Question My father deceased in Benalmadena in December of last year. He had left me completely out of his Spanish will and left everything to his second wife. She has emailed me to ask me to issue a power of attorney so that her solicitor can wind up the estate. Why would she need this? Answer What is probably happening is that your father made a will that does not comply with the new European Directive 650/2012, which states that unless a person national of a European Union country living in another manifests on his will expressly that he wishes his national law to rules his estate, the law to be applied will be the law of last residence. Spanish law determines that children can receive no less than
two thirds of their parents’ estate. They are known as obligatory heirs and their share is protected by law. If your father was resident in Benalmadena at the time of his death, two thirds of his estate belong to you and any children he may have with his second wife will only be able to receive one third. If this is the case you have two choices. 1. To claim your inheritance, which should be successful if there is no mention whatsoever on the will regarding a choice of law, and your father was resident in Spain. 2. To renounce in favour of your fathers wife, but in this case you need to be very cautious, as this may have tax implications for you. In any case, with a partially invalid will and uncertainties over how the estate has to be dealt with, winding up the estate may get complicated even if you choose to renounce in her favour. Google paid tech rival Apple $1bn in 2014 to keep its search function the default option on iOS devices, Bloomberg reports. A transcript of court proceedings from a copyright lawsuit against Google allegedly contains reference to a deal between the Silicon Valley firms. The alleged agreement involves Google paying Apple a percentage of revenue - as much as 34% - gained through iOS devices. Both companies declined to comment. The BBC has not been able to verify the claims independently. Bloomberg added that the referenced document has since been removed from the web. “The transcript vanished without a trace from electronic court records at about 15:00,” the report noted. The court proceedings in question regard a lawsuit by Oracle Corp. in which the firm claims that Google used its Java software to develop Android but failed to pay for it. ‘Lucrative business’ Analyst firms, such as Morgan Stanley, have quoted the $1bn figure in the past, but this appears to be the first time that a reference has been found in court documents. “It’s a very lucrative business to be
the browser of choice on a device or the search engine on a device,” Chris Green, a technology analyst at consultancy firm Lewis, told the BBC. “It really does, I think, highlight the importance that’s being put on being able to own real estate and the conduits through which people access information.” However, Mr Green also noted that it was generally quite common for companies to pay hardware vendors fees for the placement of software and services on devices and that sometimes that may indeed be a percentage of revenue gained as a result. Other details about how Google manages its services emerged this week - including the fact that the firm removed 780 million “bad” advertisements from its sites last year. By bad, Google said it was referring to ads which linked to malware, promoted fake goods or covered up website content. In a blog post, the company said it had more than 1,000 people within its organisation responsible for weeding out these ads and that the number that had to be removed was increasing. bbc.com

opiates, is banned as a food additive in China. However, restaurants have previously been caught using it. In 2012, seven restaurants in Ningxia province were closed for using opium poppies and in Guizhou province in 2004 authorities shut down 215 establishments for similar offences. One of the businesses affected by the latest crackdown is reported to be the popular Huda Restaurant chain in Beijing. General manager Hu Ling confirmed the company was under investigation and said it may have unwittingly bought seasoning contaminated with opiates. She declined to comment further. China has been hit by a series of food scandals in recent years. In 2014 a Shanghai-based supplier was found to have sold unsanitary and expired chicken meat to food chains including KFC, Starbucks and MacDonald’s. In 2008, six children died and more than 300,000 were made ill from milk powder contaminated with melamine, an industrial chemical used to make plastics and fertiliser. bbc.com

The Obsessions of Loco Paco
Loco Paco is one of Alqueria’s leading citizens. A senior member of the Government, one of the three who re-established democracy in the Republic and a recognised trainer of Saharan Dung Beetles. This isn’t bad for someone who is clinically insane, apart of course from being a member of government, here being insane is almost a requirement. Being clinically insane did make Paco somewhat obsessive with whatever took his fancy and Paco’s fancies included the mundane and the exceedingly worrying. This week Paco was totally preoccupied with Manuela. He worshipped the very earth she tread upon to the extent of collecting it and keeping it under his pillow. He had to stop this practice however not only because of the strangely brown hue of his pillowcase but also the burrowing rodents which scurried about his headboard had become a health hazard. Paco’s strategy in the wooing of Manuela was not based on any romantic ideal but conjured up from the fleeting messages that Paco’s damaged brain received from whatever source. A source which appeared to have no experience whatsoever concerning winning the charms of the fairer sex. Whether this source was divine or not is difficult to tell but if so then Paco probably simply overhead a message meant for someone else. His first ploy was to serenade Manuela under her window at the dead of night. He expected her to appear a shadowy figure behind the rejas, drawn by his melancholy
viewpoint
guitar notes and lilting flamenco canto. He failed. Firstly because he was under the wrong window, secondly because his guitar playing attracted cats and his singing attracted airborne boots and porcelain night jars. His second attempt involved the sending of flowers. Again he failed. Again he got the wrong address. His choice of flowers was also somewhat unfortunate. Amalia de Vega Alqueria’s oldest inhabitant at 103 was not impressed with the Lilies and cypress wreath which mysteriously appeared on her doorstep. Paco was becoming discouraged and decided on the direct approach. He followed her everywhere reciting sickly and trite poetry he wrote himself and believed it to be timeless. It was all to no avail. If Paco had been a drinking man he would have turned to alcohol instead he decided on one last grand gesture. Paco would throw himself from the top of the church tower dressed in Sevillian hat and cape. This of course had one obvious drawback, if Paco was successful he would find it difficult to have a meaningful relationship with Manuela, her in this life and he his next. But the deluded Paco didn’t worry about such technicalities. The attempt, although spectacular was again disappointing. An updraught caught his cape which made him airborne and safely deposited him among the slurry of Pongy Pedro’s pig farm. Paco gave up and started collecting the earwax of famous Abyssinian Goat Shirlers.
Calm and Ordered Until

My world was relatively calm and ordered until Pete uttered the cataclysmic words ‘Are you sure?’ Immediately Doubt seized the opportunity and squeezed himself into the tranquil harbour of my mind. ‘Yes.’ I responded. ‘I think so.’ Doubt chuckled, and metaphorically spread himself out on my cerebral sofa. ‘Should you check?’ Doubt poured himself a glass of wine, and settled down to enjoy the fun.
By Jos Biggs
The surgeon had said ‘come back on Thursday.’ Did he mean this Thursday or next Thursday? At the time I was sure he meant this Thursday, but he didn’t actually say. Better ring and check.
it rang. Ah! So now it wants something, does it?
I eventually managed to get the phone to consent to accept the hospital’s number, but there was no reply. Strange.
It was the hospital – Can I go in on Tuesday week? Fine, no doubt about that, Tuesday week, a specific day, a specific week.
Then it dawned on me that if it was next Thursday I would have to alter my existing medical appointment in Arboleas. D***! That would mean another phone call, and another battle to the death with the phone. I rang. There was no reply. Strange.
The call ended and Pete, acting on instructions received direct from Doubt, said ‘Huercal-Overa or Torrecárdenas?’ I was sure she had said Huercal-Overa, but what if she hadn’t? I rang the hospital again. Still no reply. Strange.
I was rapidly becoming heated at the non-compliance of the phone and/or hospital when Andy scrunched up the gravel on our drive. ‘Can you phone the Ferreteria and ask them when they will deliver our fridge? They should have delivered it yesterday, but didn’t. I can’t get an answer.’ His childlike faith in my ability to communicate telephonically is touching, but undeserved. I rang, There was no reply. Strange. In perplexity we listened to the deafening silence of the phone, when

I know, I thought. I’ll ring Ana, who co-ordinates all the appointments at the hospital. She’ll know. I rang. No reply. Strange. We can have direct communication with the International Space Station, orbiting the earth at 17,500 km per hour at a height of 400 km, yet I cannot contact a large static terrestrial building like a hospital, which is less than an hour’s drive away. Then I looked at the phone display – no signal! I wonder if this sort of thing ever happens to Tim Peake?

Chill for 20 mins (not essential but makes it easier to shape). Halve the filling. Lightly flour the work surface and, using your hands, roll each half, one at a time, to a 28cm-long sausage shape (picture 1) – dust more flour on the work surface if it starts to stick. Set aside. Roll out the pastry on a clean, lightly floured work surface to a 28cm square. Cut in half to give 2 rectangles. Lay one of the sausage shapes along one of the long edges of one pastry rectangle. Lighter Scotch Eggs (Makes 4)
The picnic classic gets a healthy makeover - two thirds of the fat is knocked off by using lentils and lean pork and baking instead of frying
Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a small non-stick frying pan. Tip in the shallot and fry for a few mins until softened. Transfer to a plate and set aside to cool. (No need to wash the pan, you can use it later.) Meanwhile, put 4 of the eggs in a medium pan, covering well with cold water. Bring to the boil – as the water starts to bubble, set the timer and boil for 5 mins. When cooked, pour off the boiling water and cool the eggs under cold water to stop them from cooking further. Mash the lentils well in a medium bowl with the back of a fork, then stir in the pork mince, sage, 2 tsp of the chives, the mustard, nutmeg, cooled shallots, a pinch of salt and a generous grating of black pepper. Peel the shells from the eggs and pat dry with kitchen paper. Divide the meat mix evenly into 4. Tip the flour onto a plate and roll in each egg to coat, tapping off any excess. Pat down a quarter of the meat
Ingredients:
5 tsp rapeseed oil 1 shallot , finely chopped 5 medium egg 85g green lentil (drained weight) 225g extra lean pork mince (less than 5% fat) 2 tsp finely chopped sage 3 tsp finely snipped chive ½ tsp dry mustard powder good pinch of grated nutmeg 1 tbsp plain flour 25g panko crumbs (Japanese breadcrumbs)
mix on the work surface to a 1213 cm circle, using the rest of the flour to keep it from sticking. Cup the circle in your hand and place one of the eggs in the centre. With both hands, pat, press and ease the meat mix around the egg until it is completely and evenly covered. Seal really well so there is no join, then pat and roll it into a good shape on the floured surface. Repeat with the rest of the meat mix and cooked eggs.

FOOD & ENTERTAINING... World Health Organisation backs sugar tax
A new report by The World Health Organisation (WHO) has backed the divisive plans to implement a sugar tax as a method of tackling childhood obesity. Sugar tax is one of the conclusions drawn in the two-year report by WHO, which looks into obesity among children globally. The report mentioned “alarming levels” of childhood obesity across the world, with at least 41 million under the age of five either overweight or obese. According to the report, which was presented by the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, there is strong evidence to suggest that a tax on sugar can be effective and feasible to implement. It added: “Further evidence will become available as countries that implement taxes on unhealthy foods and/or sugar-sweetened beverages monitor their progress.” Marketing and labelling Other suggestions within the report included improving frontof-pack and nutrient labelling. It said: “Some countries may consider taxes on other unhealthy foods, such as those high in fats and sugar. Taxing energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods would require
the development of nutrient profiles, and modelling suggests this may reduce consumption.” It also talked about food marketing: “Implement the set of recommendations on the marketing of foods and nonalcoholic beverages to children to reduce the exposure of children and adolescents to, and the power of, the marketing of unhealthy foods.” Food labelling was another area of concern: “A standardised system of food labelling, as recommended by the Codex Alimentarius Commission can support nutrition and health literacy education efforts, if mandatory for all packaged foods and beverages.” A sugar tax is currently being considered by the UK government ahead of a final decision in the coming weeks. NHS England boss Simon Stevens revealed last week that he was planning to add a sugar tax to food and drink sold across NHS providers by 2020 to discourage staff, patients and visitors from buying sugary snacks. This would make the NHS the first public body in the UK to impose a sugar levy. bakeryinfo.co.uk

Tips for eating out in Spain or How do Spanish people eat? One wants to experience the local’s lifestyle when travelling to a colourful country like Spain so what a better way to blend into the Spanish culture than embracing the Spanish’ way of eating?
Spanish relationship with food
It’s not a secret to anyone that Latin people take food very seriously. In fact, I would even say that Spanish culture gravitates around food. Basically,
every important event has something to do with food: a business meeting is often followed by a meal (well, sometimes that can be a trick to close the deal fast as the business partners get hungry), friends normally meet up for dinner on weekends and

I guess that is the beauty of travelling and experiencing new cultures and ways of living! So, the good news is that if you are travelling to Spain and you love great food you will be in heaven! On another hand, the bad news is that if you move to Spain and you expect to make friends with locals, I am afraid you might have to invite them around for a cooked meal! Don’t be scared, Spanish people are, in general, very happy and open minded and I am sure they won’t judge you on the food you serve but more on the effort you put in. Hey, Spain is all about passion! Well, on a daily basis, no Spanish person will skip lunch unless they are forced by external or time circumstances. Skipping lunch is not normal (we would, at least seat down and eat a nice baguette, a salad, a drink, a coffee or a dessert) otherwise people’s mood can quickly get affected!
Spanish meal times
Now that you are aware of how important meals are to Spanish people, you should also know that even though Spain looks like a relaxed country, timing is non-negotiable. part 1 So, start preparing yourself mentally and learn beforehand about Spanish eating habits to make the most of your stay in Spain. then they go for drinks (not the other way around), These rules are applicable if you are staying in a parents await their children with a delicious home- traditional village, city or anywhere that is not an made traditional meal to celebrate the occasion. international beach resort or an expats orientated For instance, if you look at traditional festivities in Spain you would notice that they all involve a great cooking and/ or eating event (giant paellas, group meals, cooking competitions, food stalls) regardless if the festivity honours a Saint, celebrates a Historical event or a football team victory… Spanish people express their happiness and love through food. I remember first time I travelled outside my comfort zone (I am both from community (for instance, due to the high number Spain & France) back in my teenage years, I felt of German and English expats, amongst others, sincerely uncomfortable and kind of insulted when Spain hosts communities where you can eat and live I arrived to my guest family in the Netherlands and exactly like home as the business owners are also the mom only offered me a cheese platter for lunch. expats). I automatically assumed the family was not happy to http://www.aspanishperspective.com/ have me there as they did not go the extra-mile to cook me lunch. Obviously, I soon found out that this was not the case at all and that Dutch people focus more on diner than on lunch, needless to say that they were indeed delighted to have me with them. would like to invite you to sample the exciting new additions to the already successful menú of the night. MOJÁCAR REPRESENTED AT WORLD KITEBOARDING CHAMPIONSHIP
31
Mojácar resident Osaïa Reding Commaille will be representing Spain in the World Kiteboarding Championship. Sponsored by Mojácar Town Council, Osaïa, at twelve years of age has an enviable track record and an undeniable talent. She shares her daily routine between the Mojácar Bartolome Flores School and the town’s beaches. As any other sixth grade student of her age, she has all the usual concerns of adolescents but remains is cheerful and full of fun. But, when you see her on the kiteboard no one can remain indifferent, it is clearly her sport and she well is aware that only hard work and extensive practice will take her to the top. Kiteboarding is considered an extreme water sport where participants traverse the waves with a surfboard propelled by a kite. At a very young age she has already achieved third place in the Cup of Spain and came fourth in the National Championship, despite being the youngest entrant of the two competitions. Osaïa has been chosen to participate in the exclusive camp “Next Generation International” organized by Kitesurf World Champion, Etienne Lhote. Only ten children from all around the world are selected. There she will meet with other promising youngsters from Brazil, France, the Netherlands and Denmark, although Osaïa will be the only Spanish representative and one of only two girls in the camp. For Osaïa Reding to participate in this camp, to be held in Tarifa in late February, represents another important step in her training and development. It will surely be of great help towards her preparations for the Junior World Championship that will be held in April in the French town of Sant Pierre la Mer. Perhaps it is just dreams and determination that differentiates Osaïa from her competitors. Firmly fixed on her horizon is being number one in Spain. On her kit she carries the shield of Mojácar and in her heart the pride and honour of representing the people of her town as well as the responsibility of wanting to take the top step of the podium. For Osaïa there is certainly no lack of motivation.
ROBOTICS WORKSHOP IN MOJÁCAR
Mojácar has started a robotics and technology workshop, organized by the Town Council and the Provincial Government of Almería. Classes are held in the Guadalinfo area at the Mojácar Centro de Usos Múltiples and consists of four sessions of four hours each. They are designed to encourage and promote teamwork through projects and for the students to acquire basic knowledge and skills in resource management and applications for robots and automation. The course has been designed for young students trying to take the first steps in this exciting world whilst helping them acquire knowledge to create and programme their own robots and get them to follow instructions and perform certain designated tasks. For Raquel Belmonte, Mojácar Councillor for Youth, “this stimulating project aims to introduce young people to new technologies through the exciting world of robotics.” This activity is being taught by Diego Martinez, a member of the Association Almedia. The interest that young people have shown in this course and their future career plans has been demonstrated by the success of the venture and, the high level of interest shown by the students who have expressed the desire to choose computer science as a profession.

best buddies odd animal style His friendship with Fiesta, an orphaned deer, was also legendary. "He just assigned himself the protector," recalls Wolf. "He came from such a terrible place but he was so loving and forgiving. That’s the great thing about animals -- they pay it forward."
PUPPY LOVE Here’s another pair of cute, fast friends. Meet Kumbali and Kago -- a puppy and a cheetah cub (Kumbali’s the cheetah and the lab mix is Kago). They live at Virginia’s Metro Richmond Zoo. It’s not clear how long they will remain together, but they seem to love each other’s company.
DOGS AND FAWNS
Shown is one of Rocky Ridge's great success stories, Tristan, a three-legged dog (top left), who came from a horribly abusive home and went on to make frequent visits to nursing homes, as a therapy dog.
Meanwhile, Duncan, the dog at right, also came to Rocky Ridge Refuge "from a bad situation." But he never seemed to hold it against any person or animal. Here, he uses Nabisco the fawn as a pillow.

Book Review
All Bones and Lies by Anne Fine
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“No-one should be expected, for love or duty or anything else, to have to put up with having their very sense of self being chipped away minute by minute.” Let’s pose this one to start with. How do you find a way through the frustrations of caring for an elderly relative, especially a difficult one, so that love, or whatever we want to call it can survive to the bitter end? More relevantly, is it possible? Anne Fine thinks so. I like the way she has presented the twins, Colin and Dilys, as different as chalk and cheese, one who decides to do right by Norah whereas the other sibling remains adamant in her choice not to have any more contact with her mother, feeling bitter and angry. A five year rift seems a long time especially when the mother is old and becoming frail. Colin, as the mediator, tries to persuade his sister to make the first move but fails miserably. So, what should you do? Norah is a difficult woman. that’s an understatement. There is an astuteness in the way that Anne Fine has depicted Norah’s selfishness. Initially, she is described as a crow, or a vulture, take your pick, both aptly chosen images showing her “pecking away at the scraps of him (Colin)before he was even dead.” Images flash through his mind of ending his torment and taking a hatchet from his woodshed, his place of retreat with Suzie, a magazine picture showing this 19 year old falling as he overindulges his sexual fantasies: “it gave him pleasure to think about how those pretty buttocks might be, first trembling in anticipation, then clenched in shock” and his spells, to murder his mother. She is also described as being notoriously miserable and showing unsparing self-pity, alias Our lady of the Sorrows. She hoarded old misfortunes “fetching them out regularly for a brush and polish.” As for Dilys, she shows her cynicism: “They’re so wrapped up in their own little ways of burning up their twisted energies that they forget other people actually exist.” It seems difficult to imagine poor Colin tolerating his mother’s constant insults and sarcasm, her “impregnable cynicism” but he maintains regular visits, does her shopping, persuades her to eat an oven-ready meal which he has brought for her and makes endless cups of tea, alleviating any sense of guilt he might have felt had he been the absent child like his sister. But is Dilys capable of feeling guilty? Probably not. Dilys works in Corporate Sponsorship for a company called Tor. She could be scathing and insensitive but wasn’t considered malicious. She was notorious in picking up womenfolk with a passion, such as Perdita, Val and Marjorie before dropping them as quickly. Colin tells us that she “chewed them up and spat them out.” Colin worked for the council as an Environmental Health Officer. He described his life as “pathetic,” a life no-one cared about. If he died, no-one would miss him except perhaps Norah who depended on him for practical support. He had hidden behind Dilys, inadequate, painfully timid, clumsy as a child and deemed a failure at school where he was constantly mocked and bullied. He would skivvy for the neighbours and this plagued him throughout his adult life. The good news is

that he develops in confidence and by the end of the novel, he shows more control and becomes more relaxed and of course, happier as a person. He harbours a sense of horror thinking of an incident that became significant in his life, offering a much needed lifeline. It involved a potentially tragic accident when a baby was catapulted from her pram after being hit by a car, two years ago. Dilys proved to be an unlikely heroine: “The way she walked down the street now, you would have thought all she had reached up to catch that one, steel-blue morning was a ball” and not a “pink and flying baby into her hands.” Everything and everyone had frozen in time. The incident had haunted Colin and as a consequence he befriended Mel, the mother and became close to her daughter, Tammy who he soon grew to adore. He daydreamed over caring for Mel and organising Tammy’s life from her choice of schools to marching her down the aisle. Mel lived in a grotty flat, in a grim area of Chesterton Court, sharply contrasting with pretty suburban West Priding where Norah lived. Mel’s secret life involved being a trapeze artist known as one half of an act called Las Venturas. Colin is impressed by this “celestial magic” which had sadly become the “drabbest of life he could imagine.” Just like his own life. He had found Mel’s strange indifference and willowy passivity coupled to her attitude of “take and take” extremely off-putting until gleaning of her magical world of the circus. In his highly imaginative world, Colin thought of marrying Mel and moving her away from this poverty, providing for her and her adorable Tammy; he wanted the child but not a wife. His “vision of parental bliss” was being able to take Tammy out to an ice cream parlour! Daily visits to his mother which he compares to a “grim pilgrimage” brings with it a realisation of how “horribly old” she looked. Colin’s life seemed to be following a dreary and similar pattern to his unfortunate father, of indifference, before his alleged suicide. Norah secretly changes her insurance policy which Colin finds is inadequate and he constantly worries about her faulty appliances in case of fire risk. Norah’s birthday seems to be a pivotal time for Colin, especially when he started to see his mother in a different light, a “new charitable understanding of his own mother.” A nasty bout of food poisoning means a stay in hospital for one unfortunate character followed by three freak fires which allow some of the characters to start afresh. A black card is issued and instead of pay-back time Colin adopts a caring stance: “He’d do right by her. as good as anyone could hope for.” Perhaps Norah didn’t deserve such kindness but don’t they say that blood is thicker than water? And, if anything, Colin makes a decent decision to be good to his mother. Publisher: Black Swan Books. ISBN: 0-552-99898-2.

2016 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI 218
Lower-end Q7 is as luxurious and well-mannered as any, although still not quite the model to plump for
What is it?: The entry-level version of the Audi Q7, the second generation of which was introduced to the UK market late last year. With 53bhp and 74lb ft less than its sister model, it’s just under a second slower to 62mph from rest than the 268bhp version – although it’s still a bluff two-tonne SUV capable of topping 130mph itself, and pretty plainly a long way from being underpowered. Offered in the same SE and S line trim levels and with all of the same equipment and available options, the lower-end Q7 isn’t a car with any less technological sophistication or breadth of ability than its more powerful sibling. And so, given that its gruntier equivalent isn’t exactly a driver’s car either, could this Q7 be the pick of the range? What's it like?: An outstanding old-school Audi in so many ways, in
terms of perceived quality, refinement, comfort, occupant space, on-board technology and remarkable ease of use. Almost all of the ways in which we praised the full-house diesel version last year, then. That said, this is perhaps not the canny buy you might expect it to be. Wind the motor up to 3500rpm and the car’s mask of invincibility slips a bit, the V6 beginning to get breathless in the higher gears. But that’s only ever likely to be a factor when doing the kind of outsidelane motorway speeds for which Audi drivers are becoming notorious. Frankly, they’re speeds that any rightthinking Q7 owner would seldom even approach, such is the readily apparent maturity and refinement of the car’s character and the sweetness of its gait at a relaxed pace. Equip the Q7 with adaptive air suspension, as came fitted to our test car, and you’ll find
its ride indulgently supple in Comfort mode and its cabin isolation top-drawer at all times. Steering is averagely light and isn’t troubled by anything as potentially wearing as contact patch feel, but it’s fluent enough. Body control is respectable, and the car steers faithfully and securely - although it wavers vertically on its springs at higher speeds at times, potentially disturbing passengers if you hurry. The steering’s fluency becomes replaced by unhelpful weight and apparent stickiness and the buoyancy of that ride by a more fidgeting compromise which, while it boosts handling response and heave control a bit, isn’t worth the trade-off. At no time is the Audi actually uncomfortable, nor anything like it, but its dynamic calling card is undoubtedly less compelling while it’s pretending to be ‘sporty’.
The car’s supremely well-constructed interior exudes an aura of integrity and class that can be matched by no other large SUV. Its infotainment and convenience functions are second-to-none, too, and there’s room for even large adults to stretch out in both the first and second rows, with average-sized ones relatively comfortable in row three. http://www.autocar.co.uk/

Guardia Civil Launches New Online Police Report System
Damage, loss, theft or recoveries are some of the issues that can be reported on this new service. Citizens will be able to make an online police report at the “eDenuncias Virtual Office”, which you can access at http://www.guardiacivil.es or https://e-denuncia. guardiacivil.es/eDenuncia/index.faces Those users who utilize this application will have priority when confirming the complaint at police stations. The Guardia Civil has launched this online police report system so that citizens can communicate certain crimes to the Spanish authorities. The citizen will be able to report document or personal items loss/ findings, vehicle theft, subtractions from the inside of vehicles, robbery (without any violence or intimidation) and damage from unknown authors. All this and more can be reported at the “e-Denuncias Virtual Office”, which can be accessed at http://www.guardiacivil.es or https://e-denuncia.guardiacivil.es/eDenuncia/index. faces. Certain crimes cannot be reported, as those in which there is physical violence or other events where the authors are clearly identified. Once the citizen has made the report at the “e-Denuncias Virtual Office”, within the next three days he/she will have to go to in person to the assigned Guardia Civil station to confirm the report. However, if the citizen wishes to confirm such report at a different police station other than the assigned one, it can be done by providing the reference given by the “e-Denuncias” system. Citizens who use this application will have priority once they have confirmed their reports, in comparison to other citizens who may come to report events of a similar nature. Therefore, unnecessary delays will be avoided for citizens. n332.es/

Adidas to end IAAF sponsorship
Adidas, the IAAF’s biggest sponsor, has told athletics’ world governing body it is to terminate their sponsorship deal four years early. The sportswear giant informed the IAAF of its decision - understood to be a direct result of the doping scandal sweeping the sport - last week. Sources say the move will cost the IAAF and its commercial partner Dentsu tens of millions of dollars in revenue. It is sure to come as a major blow for embattled president Lord Coe. Neither Adidas nor the IAAF - the International Association of Athletics Federations - confirmed the split but both issued short statements. They both referenced the “reform process” currently under way as the IAAF attempts to come to terms with a number of damaging revelations. They also claimed they were “in close contact” with each other, with the IAAF insisting it was in close contact with “all its sponsors and partners”. Adidas, which designs and manufactures sports shoes, clothing and accessories, has also expressed its displeasure at the corruption scandal that continues to engulf Fifa. However, the German firm, which signed a £750m kit sponsorship deal with British football giants Manchester United in 2014, remains world football’s governing body’s oldest commercial partner. How much will the IAAF lose? The 11-year sponsorship deal with Adidas was due to run until 2019 and was reportedly worth $33m (£23m). However, sources have told the BBC that the figure is much higher - as much, in terms of cash and product, as about $8m (£5.6m) per year. This means the projected lost revenue for the IAAF and its agency Dentsu over the next four years will be more than $30m (£21m). In August, the IAAF said its projected revenue for 2015 was $42.8m (£30m). For 2016, which features the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, it said the sum
would jump to $81.9m (£57.4m). Adidas is just one of the IAAF’s official partners, along with Canon, Toyota, Seiko, TDK, TBS and Mondo. According to an official press release that accompanied the deal announcement in 2008, the partnership between the IAAF and Adidas incorporated “every aspect of athletics, from product creation, to grassroots development and retail distribution”. Under the agreement, Adidas also became the official sponsor of the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. Why is Adidas bowing out? The BBC understands that Adidas informed the IAAF in November it was considering ending their relationship early after a report detailed claims of “state sponsored doping” within Russia. The report was compiled by an independent commission set up by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada). Earlier this month, the commission’s chairman, Dick Pound, delivered a second, damning report that revealed “corruption was embedded” within the IAAF under former president Lamine Diack. Within days, a decision at the highest level in Adidas was taken to terminate its deal with the IAAF and Dentsu. The BBC understands termination letters were sent from Adidas to the IAAF and Dentus last week. It is understood the German multinational believes the doping revelations in Pound’s reports constitute a breach of its agreement with the IAAF. Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell said the news that Adidas was ending its sponsorship deal early would have a major impact on the sport. “It’s one thing to say we won’t be renewing our contract after 2019 but to actually terminate your contract now, seven, eight months before the start of the Olympic Games, this is huge,” said the Briton. bbc.com

Super Bowl 50: Denver Broncos to face Carolina Panthers The Denver Broncos beat the New England Patriots 20-18 in a dramatic AFC Championship game and will face the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. Defending champions New England scored a touchdown with 12 seconds remaining but failed with a two-point conversion that would have levelled the scores. Quarterback Cam Newton led Carolina to a 49-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC Championship game. The Super Bowl takes place in San Francisco on 7 February.
Newton ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more to lead the Panthers to their second Super Bowl
Denver quarterback Peyton Manning, criticised all season after struggling with poor form and injury, has a chance to win his second Super Bowl title. And at 39, he will be the oldest quarterback to play in the NFL’s showpiece event. Broncos legend John Elway was the previous oldest, appearing in the 1999 victory over the Atlanta Falcons at the age of 38. “To be going to our second Super Bowl in four years is very special and just an awesome effort,” said Manning, who is 40 in March. Brady and Manning Manning, who has thrown the most touchdowns in NFL history, managed just nine touchdown passes in the regular season. But he threw two first-half scores to Owen Daniels to put the Broncos 17-9 ahead at their Mile High Stadium. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady struggled against Denver’s superb defence, throwing two interceptions in the first half, but rallied late on to throw a touchdown to Rob Gronkowski inside the final few seconds. That made the score 20-18, but Denver defended the two-point conversion attempt to see out the win. New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski’s remarkable run of 523 consecutive kicks came to an end when he missed his extra point after Steven Jackson’s touchdown. Panthers maul Cardinals Cam Newton dives for a touchdown
Manning.
Carolina scored the first three times they touched the ball to lead the Cardinals 24-7 at half-time. Star quarterback Newton finished with 335 yards passing and 47 rushing, as the team set a scoring record for an NFC final. “Oh, wow, playing ‘The Sheriff’,” 26-year-old Newton said of the prospect of going head-to-head with
“We’re going to live in the moment right now. We’re going to be excited. “We came out here and fought our tails off and did what a lot of people said we couldn’t do. It’s not over yet. We’ll be ready to go in two weeks.” Newton, expected to be named the league’s most valuable player, has run or thrown for 50 touchdowns this season. The Panthers lost the 2004 Super Bowl 32-29 to the Patriots. Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer described his mood after the defeat as “about as bad as you can feel”. “Carolina jumped out early and got on top of us,” he said. “We dug ourselves a hole and never came close to coming out of it.” Palmer surrendered six of seven turnovers, including four interceptions. “Staring over at their sideline and seeing that feeling the other team has is something that’s probably going to stick with me for the rest of my life,” he said. The Cardinals reached their only Super Bowl in 2009, losing 27-23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Venue: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California Date: Sunday, 7 February Start time: 23:30 GMT Bbc.com
