Since May 12 there exists the obligation to inscribe into the tourism register all properties which are rented for tourism or holiday use in Andalucía, as long as the property is sited in a residential area and is legally occupied. Properties are legally considered to be for tourism use when: 1. They are sited in urban buildings which are for residential use, offered for rent with the finality of tourism in exchange for a monetary consideration and in a habitual manner. It does not matter whether the whole property is rented out or just a room (as long as the proprietor continues in residence during the term of the let – in the manner of Airbnb, etc). 2. It is assumed that the use is that of tourism, and the manner is habitual, when the property is advertised or promoted via any specialised media. 3. Specialised media are companies that mediate between tenant and landlord in exchange for a commission or payment such as travel agents, holiday rental website or real estate agencies. If the property is not advertised on specialised media it is presumed that there is no habitual letting. However, this is not an obstacle preventing the Administration fining the registered property owner if it can be proven that the home is being let on a habitual basis. But this means that the Administration must build a case to prove that the home is being let constantly, rather than being able to assume this is the case. We find ourselves in this latter case when the owner promotes or advertises the property privately for the use of tourism through any advertising medium (newspapers, radio, websites etc). The following properties are excluded from this law (but may be subject to other laws): Properties which are let for free or a non-monetary consideration. Those let for a period greater than two months (in which case they are subject to Spain’s Tenancy Act). Homes which are not in urban residential areas must be registered as rural lets (casas rurales). Tourism complexes, which are considered to be different from tourism properties. When the same owner has three or more short term rental properties within a radius of one thousand metres of one another they are considered to be a tourism complex. Such “sets of tourism apartments”, or tourism complexes, are regulated under their own Regulation. All properties which are outside of this radius of one thousand metres are considered to be individual tourism properties, even if the same owner has more than three properties. Inspections

to Facebook and Microsoft services. Microsoft will use the new cable to improve its cloud-based services such as Azure, as well as Xbox, Skype and Office. Speaking on behalf of Facebook, Najam Ahmad, vice president of network technology, said his company “was always evaluating new technologies and systems to provide the best connectivity possible.” The goal of both companies is to meet its customers’ growing and increasingly complex connection and dataconsumption requirements, and to speed up the development of the latest generation of internet infrastructure. Marea will have open infrastructure, meaning it will be a cable that can operate using technology from a range of manufacturers. The design will mean cheaper costs for customers and better equipment, which could translate into the growth of broadband ratios by using fibre optics in the future. Construction of the cable will begin in August this year and is due to finish in October 2017. Facebook and Microsoft are working with Telxius to benefit from Telefónica’s experience and know-how with underwater cables. The company will operate and manage the system and will be able to sell capacity as part of its wholesale infrastructure business. “Working with Facebook and Microsoft on this project will reinforce Telxius’ leadership and allow us to capture new market opportunities,” said Rafael Arranz, the company’s head of operations. elpais

The undersea connection will be managed by Telefónica affiliate Telxius, and will enter Europe through Bizkaia Microsoft and Facebook have announced they are to lay a latestgeneration submarine cable under the Atlantic to improve internet connections between the United States and Europe. The two giant tech companies say the cable will provide significantly faster online speeds, as well as better cloud computing services. Dubbed “Marea,” the cable will have a capacity of around 160 terabytes per second, 16 million times faster than a domestic connection, making the transatlantic cable the fastest broadband on the planet. Its eight pairs of fibres will connect the 6,600 kilometres between a North Virginia data centre, and the Spanish province of Bizkaia, in the Basque Country, from where it will be distributed to other centres in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The project will be operated by Telxius, a new infrastructure company set up by Spain’s leading telecoms operator, Telefónica, and that could invest in the company that owns the cable, say sources there. Microsoft will use the new cable to improve its cloud-based services such as Azure, as well as Xbox, Skype and Office The route taken by the cable begins further south than other transatlantic connections, which normally depart from New York. The new location will provide a more flexible and secure connection for customers in the United States and Europe and will give priority

If you have property in Spain we recommend you make a Spanish will. Since setting up office in 1994, I have always been surprised by the amount of people who still have doubts regarding the necessity of a Spanish will to cover assets in Spain. There should be no doubt. It is extremely important. In England if you do not make a will, then the law has rules, which will determine the distribution of your assets. These rules could mean that your assets are distributed in a way very different from what you would have liked. In Spain the situation is the same, with additional factors. Your heirs will have to deal with a foreign language and legal system. Even more important since Directive 650/2012 that came into force in 2015, if you are resident in Spain the assets, unless you have said differently

on a Spanish will, would be distributed conforming to Spanish law (explained in article below). Some people include their Spanish assets in their English will. This is legally binding, but to obtain probate in Spain, it will be necessary for the will to be translated and legalised. This is a long and costly procedure and can get very complicated if the English will sets up a trust. (As trusts in Spain do not exist.) With the experience of having handled hundreds of probate cases for ex-pats in Spain over the last twenty years, I can guarantee that making a Spanish will is extremely important to avoid serious problems and delays for your heirs. How the will is written will make a big difference to how much tax they will pay. Have two separate wills, one in England for your English assets and one in Spain for your Spanish assets.

Duke of Wellington's daughter Lady Charlotte marries in Granada

DUKE of Wellington Charles Wellesley's daughter, Lady Charlotte married Colombian New Yorker Alejandro Santo Domingo in Íllora (Granada province) yesterday (Saturday) after a 10-month engagement. Among the VIP guests was Lady Charlotte's cousin, Lady Sofía, who wed British singer James Blunt two years ago on a beach in Ibiza. The ninth Duke of Wellington owns a country estate, or finca near Íllora, where the reception was held after the ceremony at the La Encarnación church. Duchess of Cornwall Camilla ParkerBowles, 43-year-old Czech model Eva Herzigova, and the abdicated King Juan Carlos I of Spain – father of the current

monarch, Felipe VI – were also among the guests, who suffered a drenching outside the church when the heavens suddenly opened. Despite the downpour, however, the sight of so many celebrities brought crowds of local people out onto the streets with their cameras. Lady Charlotte, 25, whose mother Princess Antonia of Prussia is a descendant of Queen Victoria, and Antonio, 39, a billionaire investment banker in the Big Apple, had been photographed taking time out for a quiet stroll in the village the day before the wedding, and the bride's €300 fringed jeans from 3x1 are already causing copycat high-street versions to fly off

June 2016

the shelves. Described as a 'fun and modern aristocrat' who shakes off the stuffy stereotypes associated with the British landed gentry, Lady Charlotte Wellesley holds a degree in archaeology and anthropology from Oxford University and currently works as a travelling producer for iconic fashion photographer Mario Testino. She became engaged in July to Alejandro, vice-chairman of beer manufacturing firm SABMiller and MD of Quadrant Capital Advisors, Inc, who holds a Harvard University degree and a fortune of an estimated €4.2 billion. Their engagement party in the Colombian coastal town Cartagena de Indias and the Baru beach, nearly three months ago, went on for three days with 300 rich and famous guests, including the country's president, Juan Manuel Santos. The 19th-century family estate in Íllora which hosted the reception - nearly 1,000 hectares in size and replete with olive groves - has been handed down through the generations of Wellingtons ever since the first Duke was given it as a thank-you gift for his support of Spain against the encroaching invasion of France under Napoleon between 1807 and 1814. It was used by Prince Charles and Princess Diana when the former's relationship with Camilla was unveiled, in

order to stall his then wife's finding out. The Wellington dynasty started when the first Duke, Arthur Wellesley, who was then the first Marquise of Wellington, was awarded the title to commend him for his spectacular battle of Waterloo defeat of Napoleon's army, where he was leader of a squadron of Prussian, Flemish and British soldiers. Another 60 victories in the Armed Forces followed for the first Duke of Wellington, who was prime minister under the Conservatives for two legislatures and worked as Master of the Horse – what would now be a yard manager – for King George IV and King William IV. The military tradition was kept alive in the now 200-year-old dynasty, but became a thing of the past with the current Duke, whose career was strictly non-Forces and encompassed charity work and politics. But the name 'Arthur' has continued to this day: five Dukes have been called Arthur – along with two Henrys and a Gerald – and the 10th Duke of Wellington will also be an Arthur, Lady Charlotte's elder brother, a father of three married to Jemma Kidd, sister of former professional showjumper and model Jodie.

Spain arrests seven over stolen Bacon paintings

Spanish police said Saturday they had arrested seven people suspected of involvement in the theft of five paintings worth €25 million ($27.8 million) by renowned British artist Francis Bacon. The paintings were reported stolen in July 2015 along with a safe containing coin collections and jewellery and have yet to be recovered. Spanish detectives were approached in February by British private investigators specialising in the recovery of stolen artworks who had received an email with photographs of the stolen works asking if they were listed as stolen, national police said in a statement. Investigators then analysed the photo and were able to determine that the camera that took the images was owned by a photographic equipment rental company which supplied details of the customer who had rented it at the time the paintings were photographed. The customer, who is suspected of involvement in the crime, was among those arrested, along with a Madrid art

dealer and his son. Sources close to the investigation said in March that the theft appeared to have been a highly-professional operation which took place while the owner was away in London, with the perpetrators disabling the alarm system. The owner of the paintings was reportedly a close friend of Bacon. Irish-born Bacon died in Madrid in 1992 aged 82 and his expressionistsurrealist works, which are often raw and emotional, remain hugely sought after. Bacon’s death only enhanced his reputation and the 2013 sale of his 1969 work “Three Studies of Lucien Freud” fetched $142,405,000 (€128 million) at auction, a world record at the time. Art market information leader Artprice lists Bacon as one of 10 frontline modern artists alongside the likes of Picasso and Andy Warhol Warhol whose works make up 18 percent of global sales http://www.thelocal.es

The Epsom Derby is one of the greatest events on the British sporting and social calendars. Held every year on the weekend of June 3rd and 4th, it always promises to be as memorable as previous years. The Investec Derby Festival has become the grand occasion it is as a result of a rich history and heritage that stretches back centuries. Racing at Epsom began in the early 17th century, although it was banned during Cromwell’s Commonwealth in the years after the English Civil War. The first recorded race meeting was held in 1661. By the 1730s there were two regular meetings, in May and October each year. The Derby itself began in 1780, with the unverified tale being that the name of the race was decided on the toss of a coin by the 12th Earl of Derby and president of the Jockey Club Sir Charles Bunbury. In its first half century, the race became a huge sporting event and a big day out for Londoners of all social classes. Gradually, practices such as on-course betting emerged as racegoers started to follow the sport seriously, studying the form as they sought to back the best horses.

The 1952 film, Derby Day, directed by Herbert Wilcox and starring Michael Wilding and Anna Neagle, is set entirely around the Epsom Derby. 5. Alex Greaves became the first lady jockey to ride in the race in 1996. She finished last of the 20 runners on the filly, Portuguese Lil. 6. With nine wins to his name, Lester Piggott has been first past the post more times than any other jockey. 7. Shergar won the race by the longest distance (10 lengths) in 1981 before the colt disappeared without a trace. The horse was believed to be kidnapped by the IRA. 8. More than twice as many Derby winners have had names beginning with S than with any other letter. 9.The last filly to run in the race was 1,000 Guineas winner Cape Verdi in 1998. She started as 11/4 favourite, but could only finish ninth. 10. Aidan O’Brien and his 19-year-old son, Joseph, became the first f at h e rson trainer-jockey combination to win the race in 2012. 11. Workforce holds the record for the fastest winning time of 2 minutes, 31.33 seconds in 2010. 12. Aidan O’Brien became the first trainer to win three Derby’s back to back from 2012 to 2014. 13. Franki Dettori won The Derby in 2015 on Golden Horn, completing the race in 2 minutes, 32.32 seconds. 14. 3,900 bottles of Champagne were popped in 2015. 15. The 2016 Investec Derby Trophy will be presented to winning connections by Her Majesty The Queen.

They’re At It Again!

Hello and Welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. You know who I am, Where I am, What I do and how much more I have to offer. So let’s get started :-) The other day I got an email from someone who had received a ‘Cold Call’ from someone with an Indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft. This feller asked me to pass on the warning. Having read his email several times I thought that it would be good to reproduce, verbatim, how he handled it. I did ask him if I could use his example and name and he seemed quite happy for me to use both.

George Geoff there please?” Me in a slightly camp tone “why yes I’m George Bryan Cranston Geoff how may I help you?” Caller “oh er, we’ll Mr Geoff were calling to see if you’d be interested in a plan that would stop cold caller phoning you, is it something you might be interested in? Me “oh you have a gorgeous voice! I bet you’re a gym goer aren’t you!” (Still slightly camp) Caller somewhat bemused “ well yeah....... Erm would you be (I cut him short) “I bet you’re really athletic, probably have perfect blue eyes to don’t you ?” Yep still camp! Caller “............ah......ummmm, we’ll their actually brown sir” Me (fatal ammo here) “Brown! OH! That reminds me of marmite, do you know what I do to myself with marmite? “ loud click as a probably mortified cold caller ended the call. Bottom line I’m sick of these calls and generally them messing folk around so I urge people to NOT be rude if you get one of these calls, just mess with the mind of the person on the other end! I’m actually waiting for the next call because I have some real outlandish (sh/w)it waiting in the wings! He says that his next encounter with them will be as a “sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania can you feel the antici. ........pation!”. (Rocky Horror Picture Show Fans will immediately recognise the line). I do hope he records the next one because, knowing him over many years, it will be a howling hoot and I can’t wait. So, top and bottom, DO NOT lose you temper, easy done with the invasive provocation that they bring. Remain calm and either 1. Say “No thank you” and hang up before they get a chance to try and draw you in. 2. Just hang up without the “Thank You” or my brand new personal favourite. 3. Play with them while ever you are able to remain in control on the situation. Finally, NEVER EVER offer any personal information (unless it is completely fictional and done “because you can”), Never allow them access to your computer and most importantly, don’t PAY FOR ANY ‘SERVICES’ that they claim to have provided.

It starts: This morning at 09.25 a call from an Indian lady with the unlikely name of MARY SMITH!!! Again from MICROSOFT. ‘Your computer has a virus and when you go into Google or e-mails you are downloading more virus. I can help you with it’. ‘How much will this cost me? How much do you charge?’ ‘No, it is a routine check up’. ‘Are you going to rob my bank account?’ ‘Sorry’ and long pause. I repeated the question. ‘No, I am rich’ (Well by golly. The only person who has said that is a Mr TRUMP!! ‘I have your number which is …. I will do a Malware scan and I will ring you back with the result. Where are you ringing from?’ SHE PUT THE PHONE DOWN!! I won! I hear a lot of voices in the background so there must be a team of them. Very clever, convincing and determined. May be worth another reminder to your readers. Now this gentleman, called Tom Smith claims to be a 71 years old ‘Computer Dumbo’, well my reply to this is “Anyone smart enough to make these lying, thieving, toe-rags hang up is smarter than your average bear”. Well Done Mate! I also have an ex-student of Karate whom I helped up through his black belt. He has since passed my achievements and made my very proud! He has a slightly different way dealing with these ‘Cold Callers’ and it might work for you too. For further information or advice on I goes like this: Caller” is there a

Space to be Amazed Those that love all things quiz know that quiz setters are given a book filled with fiendish questions on graduating from quiz setting school. Quiz setters guard these mythical tomes with their lives much like the Magic Circle does with their magic spells. One question that often stumps the unsuspecting is – what is the nearest star to Earth? Another more relevant question to this article which also comes from the secret book is - what is the largest volcano known to man? The answer may be more earthbound now as scientists mapping the ocean floor found the remains of a Super Volcano 1000 miles off the coast of Japan. It covers an area of 120,000 square miles which considering the British Isles covers 93,000 miles means it’s rather large. Luckily it’s been extinct for over a hundred and forty million years. Currently the world’s largest active volcano is Mauna Loa in Hawaii, yet this whippersnapper covers a mere 2000 square miles. Olympus Mons on Mars spreads over 113,000 miles soaring nearly 14 miles high; reaching a height three times that of Everest. Even at that height Olympus Mons only makes it as the second highest peak in the solar system as up in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout

keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 461 More information on Línea Directa online at

Jupiter is Vesta which is what’s known as a Proto Planet. Vesta has a surface area the size of Pakistan with an impact crater called Rheasilvia on it. The peak in the middle of the crater rises up well over14 miles, so standing on tip toes it just pips Olympus Mons to the tallest student in class prize. Even with the highest mountain in the solar system sticking out like an angry spot on its bottom; Vesta is only the second largest lump of rock in the Asteroid Belt that’s not quite a planet, Ceres makes it as the largest. Ceres is about 500 miles across with a surface area the size of India, which sounds large until compared to our own Moon which is 25 times larger. Ceres was discovered in 1801with many thinking it was the missing link. For years astronomers thought there should be another planet in between Mars and Jupiter. Unfortunately Ceres does not fit the very strict criteria to be classed as a planet so it is just a plain old dwarf planet. This is the same class Pluto was demoted to in 2006 giving the solar system just 8 planets instead of the 9 we

were all taught at school. Poor Pluto was also upstaged a year earlier in 2005 when Eris was discovered and named as the largest of all dwarf planets. Eris was originally going to be called Xena after the warrior princess from telly as more female names are needed in space. It starts with X as in Planet-X the mythical planet that is supposed to exist. Mars does win a prize for the largest impact crater in the solar system; it’s called Utopia Planitia and is 2100 miles across. Trekkies will recognise the craters name as in Star Trek lore this is the site of the Federation shipyards; both on the planet Mars and wait for it - in aero synchronous orbit above it. The USS Enterprise-D was built there. Captain Jean Luc Picard as played by the ever young Patrick Stewart was the commanding officer for most of that starships life. I apologize in advance to any Trekkie reading if my Star Trek history is not quite exact on this but there’s no need to write in with any corrections.

e ap sc E er m m Su y n n Su a r fo s ge 5 Spanish Villa

For decades, Spain has been one of Europe's top destinations for summer travellers looking to enjoy her beaches, cuisine, world-class museums, and laid-back lifestyle. This popularity, however, has come at a cost, with many scenic coastal areas now dominated by behemoth, often-charmless resort chains, and a loss of the distinct Mediterranean authenticity that so many travellers crave. Nevertheless, Spain still boasts a treasure trove of charming, peaceful villages and stunning landscapes for travellers willing to get off the beaten path.

Arcos de la Frontera (Photo by Olimpus)

We've combed through thousands of real-life recommendations from travellers and locals on minube to find out the best villages in Spain for a summer break or weekend getaway. From sleepy Asturian fishing towns to Andalucía's stunning white villages, here's a selection of Spain's best towns for a sunny summer escape.

1.) Frigiliana

Frigiliana is an Andalucian white village par excellence: a cluster of pristine white-washed homes and picturesque courtyards covered in geraniums and violets, cascading down the mountainside towards the sea in a backdrop of lemon, orange, and olive groves. While Frigiliana has been spared the masstourism of neighbouring Nerja, making it ideal for a quiet retreat, locals also suggest visiting at the end of August when Frigiliana holds its popular Three Cultures Festival celebrating the village's history. (Photo by Miguel A. Cartagena)

2.) Banyalbufar

Nestled in the Tramontana Mountains of western Mallorca, the sleepy village of Banyalbufar packs a touristic punch considerably larger than its size (only around 600 inhabitants). The surrounding countryside was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the closet cove, Cala Banyalbufar, is a quiet, idyllic crescent of crystal blue water. If you're not feeling outdoorsy, you can also explore the town's rambling streets and enjoy a glass of local Malvasia wine on one of the ocean view terraces. (Photo by Andres Rullan)

best-preserved medieval town in Cataluña is no secret, and it can get full in high summer, especially in August, so most travellers on minube suggest visiting in early summer or early autumn.

3.) Arcos de la Frontera The reigning king of the Andalucía's famous White Villages is defiantly Arcos de la Frontera, a charming cliff-top hamlet only an hour's drive from Cadiz. Widely considered one of Spain's most beautiful villages, Arcos de la Frontera's charm lies in its narrow streets and immaculate white walls decorated with flowering vines and colorful tilework. One of this village's main draws its location: the beach, the spectacular Doñana National Park, the Grazalema Mountains, and the splendours of Seville all within slightly more than an hour's drive.

4.) Pedraza

About an hour and a half north of Madrid, travellers will find one of the jewels of central Spain: Pedraza. While the regional capital, Segovia, has attracted international travellers for years, Pedraza is a favourite among locals due to its imposing castle, impressive views, atmosphere which recalls the 16th century. However, Pedraza is most famous for its hearty cuisine based on local specialties like lamb and suckling pig roasted in wood-fire ovens.

5.) Besalú

The moment visitors pass over Besalú's trademark 12th century bridge, it's clear they've entered a different world entirely; the narrow alleyways of the Jewish district adorned with Romanesque engravings give way to seductive tapas bars offering some of the best regional cuisine in Cataluña. However, Besalú's reputation as the

Ana: The Alquerian Herbalist medicines are rather ineffectual

In Alqueria’s Calle Siniestro lives Ana the herbalist. In her little shop she mixes herbs, spices, extracts and resins into potions for every conceivable condition known to man and several still unknown. Occasionally through neglect or tiredness she would mix substances of a volatile nature resulting in small, noisy and very smelly explosions. She would emerge after such an explosion, face blackened, hair smouldering into the sunlit street, muttering and clutching a still burning pestle. Passers-by pay little attention, a singed Ana is a common sight in Alqueria. Ana also practises ‘Magnetic Therapy’. She can’t afford the equipment however so uses an old bar magnet from a motorbike magneto. She doesn’t actually cure anybody, in fact the only positive results of the treatment are the poor patient’s watches stopping and small metallic objects clinging to them like chainmail. It was easy to tell who had the Magnetic Therapy as they are always late for buses, appointments and meals and rust up when it Rains. The herbalist of Alqueria was happy though and practised her remedies on herself. Her breakfast was akin to a chemistry experiment and she would often surface from the meal stained by the colours of her mixtures. Sometimes green, sometimes a bright yellow and once a deep brown which was strangely worrying. Now Ana’s only source of income is from her shop and unfortunately her home-made

which was somewhat of a handicap to trade. But being an enterprising girl she made all her concoctions utterly addictive by adding the most potent Remitroot powder available. Some thought Ana’s concoctions were responsible for the menfolk of Alqueria only possessing two neurons, but this of course is untrue as men in general have always only possessed two neurons. Women clamoured for her cosmetic range of products believing that Ana’s good looks and shapely bottom were a result of their regular use. Of course they weren’t, Ana inherited her appearance and culito but somehow failed to mention this to her customers. The women folk of Alqueria spend a great deal of their time in her shop. It could be said that being speaking quietly is an act of great self control for any Spaniard male or female, for an Alquerian it is a ruddy miracle. Up to eight women can be seen in the herbal shop carrying on eight separate conversations. Each one of the eight involved in each conversation both understanding and contributing, the multitasking is phenomenal and the permeations numerous. Ana continues to operate her little shop in Alqueria and can be seen at regular intervals blackened by explosions and twitching from the side effects of her treatments. So, when in Alqueria pay her shop a visit in the Calle Siniestro just off the Calle Horno.

The Portacabin 2

It was the day of my next chemo, session 4, and a fortnight after my plastered arm had prevented this taking place. It was also a week after I should have had a portacabin (properly known as a port-a-cath) put in my chest. As this had not happened I was already 5 weeks since my last session. I knew at the time that the Receptionist’s promise of ‘We’ll ring you’ was not going to happen, and I was armed and ready for conflict. I turned my steps and battle face to Demanda Cirugia, who I believed were the root cause of the problem. I proffered my piece of paper. ‘Yes,’ said the Receptionist. ‘You have to go to General Surgery for them to make the appointment.’ I staggered under the huge weight of Deja-Vu. ‘No,’ I explained patiently. ‘I have been to General Surgery. I saw you a fortnight ago, and you said you would phone me.’ ‘We will.’ ‘I am on the Priority List. The operation was to have been last week.’ ‘We’ll phone you.’ (Subtext – Go away). The opening shot had been fired. Battle was engaged. However, as a wise General deploys his troops for maximum victory with least causalities I turned on my heel and headed for Oncology. Senior Nursie saw me coming, and scooped up Consulta Victoria Eugenia. ‘What? Operation not done? Take her back to Demanda, it should have been done.’ Victoria Eugenia is a serious, restrained lady, but I could see she was peeved. I trotted obediently in Nursie’s

25

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk broiling wake, grateful for the support of this pocket battleship. She stormed into Demanda with both forrard cannon blazing. I stayed out of harm’s way outside, listening to the salvo and counter salvo from within. One side or the other must have run low on armaments, because she emerged as quickly as she had entered, face flushed and jaw set. In retreat, but not defeated, we galloped back to Oncology and Victoria Eugenia. She listened, uttered the word ‘Sit’, nailed her colours to the mast and picked up the phone. I have no idea who she phoned. She did not raise her voice, nor did she show any outward sign of even the slightest loss of temper, but she was inexorable. I was impressed – she was as relentless as a small but determined glacier. She replaced the phone and met my anxious eye. ‘They will phone you. The operation will be this week.’ They did. It was.

The health benefits of... spinach Spinach is believed to be of Persian origin. By the 12th century, it spread across Europe and became a desirable leafy green known for good health; a reputation that stands firm to this day. The name Florentine is often used to describe dishes containing spinach (and a creamy sauce). It is thought that this name dates back to the 16th century and the Italian wife of France's Henry II; Catherine de Medici. The unverified tale states that Catherine introduced spinach to the Court of France and to honour her Italian heritage, she then decided to call any dish containing spinach Florentine. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com

Zarajos’ and ‘entresijos’ – tried the weird food of Madrid?

IF you thought they ate odd things in Andalucia, try Madrid.

A

colourful mix of innards, guts and offal were on display during a visit to the capital this month.

A

bowl of snails, with chorizo, ended up being decidedly ordinary alongside a plate of pigs ears (oreja) and sheep intestines (zarajos) at historic Los Caracoles restaurant, in the La

The Official Wine of the Spanish Football Team Spanish winery Dehesa de la Luna has come to an agreement with the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (Royal Spanish Soccer Association) for its Dehesa de Luna 2014 wine to serve as the official wine of the Spanish National Soccer Team. APopularly known as "La Roja" (The Red), it’s not surprising that the Spanish National Soccer Team will be partnered with a red Spanish wine from the town of La Roda, Albacete (Castile-La Mancha), during the upcoming European Soccer Championships in France this summer. Dehesa de la Luna 2014 is the flagship creation of the winery by the same

name. It is made using Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot grapes from its El Viñazo and La Cañada del Navajo vineyards, and aged six months in 85% French – 15% American oak. In 2016 this wine received a Gold Medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The wine will accompany the Spanish team on its journey during the European Championships, starting with the initial games in Austria and Switzerland and continuing through to the final phases in France. It will also be present in the tournament's Press Offices, where it will be enjoyed by the national and international journalists on-hand for the big event. They will certainly savor this versatile and vivacious red wine, with its aromas of red fruit, scrubland and black pepper; as well as its structured palate and long finish. www.foodswinesfromspain.com

La

Latina district. The zarajos, which are typical from Cuenca, come on a wooden skewer and are lightly barbecued. “You need to eat them slowly and savour them,” explained local teacher Cristina Herrera, 31 Meanwhile, a racion of ‘entresijos’ came out with a round of beers at a restaurant up near Alonso Martinez. A very unusual dish, reminiscent of wild mushrooms, but slightly chewier, turns out to be lamb ‘mesentery’ or, as defined in English, the ‘piece of peritoneum that joins part of the small intestine to the back wall of the abdomen’. Another unusual tapa is ‘gallinejas’, or chitterlings, which are the intestines of a suckling pig. The specialities are particularly popular during the city’s annual San Isidro festival that ended last week. They are rarely found in the centre, apart from at feria time, and are more likely to be eaten in the working class suburbs, including Carabanchel and Vallecas.

Animal picture of the week This animal-loving photographer has spent the last decade snapping incredible photos of majestic African elephants in the wild. Australian native Bobby-Jo Clow, 33, has been taking pictures of beautiful elephants since 2004, when she was left mesmerised after seeing her first wild elephant in Kenya. Since then, she has made regular pilgrimages to southern and eastern Africa to capture the stunning creatures on camera in their natural habitat. Now, Bobby-Jo has narrowed down her thousands of images to just 200, and is planning to create a book of her beautiful pictures called Reflections of Elephants along with written reflections of writers, poets, conservationists and elephant experts from around the globe.

Book Review

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galraith

www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es

“Her head had bled a little into the snow. The face was crushed and swollen, one eye reduced to a pucker, the other showing as a sliver of dull white distended lids.” A dramatic opening, the death of a beautiful supermodel in suspicious circumstances, having fallen from her Mayfair penthouse caused a big stir with the paparazzi. Detective Inspector Roy Carver and Detective Sergeant Eric Wardle were on the case. Lula Landy, like the late Princess Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world. It seems that both women were hounded to death by the pressure of celebrity and attention. Her death dominated the news showing her “flawless face, her lithe and sculpted body” but within three months “The frenzy wore itself into staleness.” Lula was an interesting character, having been adopted by a wealthy white family. She had been investigating her biological roots and had discovered a black half-brother who she had made contact with. She was expelled from school for dabbling in drugs and ran off to London to live rough with addicts. Her on-off boyfriend was an addict, violent at times, a musician called Evan Duffield and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She had been signed up by Guy Some the fashion designer after winning a modelling contract worth 5 million pounds over 2 years. When she died she had accumulated a fortune of 10 million. Before her death there had been a row with Duffield and he became chief suspect but at this stage, the conclusion amounted to: “The poor cow jumped. There was no one else there.” No further investigation. Three months later we meet her adopted half-brother, John Bristow, a lawyer for Landry, May and Patterson. He chooses Cordoran Strike , Private Detective with an equally interesting past who is down on his luck. His military career came to an abrupt end with a serious injury when he lost part of his leg. His long term girlfriend and his turbulent relationship with Charlotte has finally floundered and he has nowhere to sleep other than his office in Denmark Street. His finances have hit rock-bottom and he has acquired a temp called Robin, intelligent and down-to-earth who he cannot afford without any paying clients. Bristow seems to be the lifeline that Strike desperately needs. He chose Strike to reopen the case of Lula because of his connection with Charlie who was John’s adopted brother who died when he was 9 years of age. Strike and Charlie had been bosom friends for two months prior to Charlie’s fatal accident.

“They say my sister killed herself. I don’t believe it.” Strike is initially sceptical and reluctant to take on the case having decided that the police investigation was thorough and he believed the final verdict of suicide. But he is interested to hear evidence from a neighbour, Tansy Bestigui who overheard a heated argument seconds before Lula died. She was convinced that Lula was pushed over her balcony. The police had dismissed her evidence because she had been taking cocaine. Strike takes on the case and he is offered twice the going rate which will partly solve his mountainous debts. A string of interviews with all of the characters who had had contact with Lula make it compelling reading and the suspense is kept ticking over until the finale which is likened to an Agatha Christie climax when the murderer is revealed, and all the facts of the case spilled out in thorough detail. Cormoran Strike comes out of this very well. He outwitted the police force and deserves our uttermost respect. By the end of the case his reputation has spread and he has clients coming to his dingy office. Things are looking up. You’ll have guessed by now that J.K. Rowling was the author. When she sent her manuscript anonymously to Orion Books it was rejected. The sequel was published recently: “The Silkworm” which I am sure will be as successful. Rowling is certainly a master storyteller and I loved it. Publisher: Sphere. ISBN: 978-0-7515-4925-6 REVIEW it by Carol Naylor.

Rain cancels play as Novak Djokovic & Serena Williams wait

Heavy rain has forced day nine of the French Open to be cancelled, meaning top seeds Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams must wait to play their fourthround matches in Paris. Monday’s play was delayed before being called off at about 12:45 BST. Djokovic’s match against Spanish 14th seed Roberto Bautista Agut has been rescheduled for 10:00 on Tuesday. Williams then meets Ukraine’s 18th seed Elina Svitolina, before Andy Murray’s last-16 tie against Richard Gasquet. All three matches are scheduled for Court Philippe Chatrier - the main show court at Roland Garros - with British number one Murray’s meeting with France’s Gasquet not starting before 13:00. However, more rain is forecast in the French capital on Tuesday. It is the first time in 16 years the rain has caused a whole day’s play to be abandoned at the tournament. Murray, seeded second, is already through to the quarter-finals after beating American 15th-seed John Isner in straight sets on Sunday. Ninth seed Gasquet is the only home player left in either singles draw, reaching his first Roland Garros quarterfinal by beating fifth seed Kei Nishikori. http://www.bbc.com

ahead of Rikard Karlberg, who struck a stunning 65, including a hole-in-one. "It is the biggest win of my career, I have always wanted to win the tournament and to win with my family here is amazing," Wood said. Masters champion Danny Willett slipped off the lead to finish third. “Wood started the final day three behind and covered the front nine in 29. It helped him open up a four-shot lead, but then the tall Bristolian was oblivious. “He avoided looking at the leaderboard

“It’s a great opportunity for Luther, who I thought played really well yesterday,” Jones said. “He carried the ball well, defended with aggression and scored an excellent try. We wish him a successful tour to South Africa with the Saxons.” England, who fly out to Australia on Tuesday, play the first of three Tests against the World Cup runners-up in Brisbane on Saturday, 11 June. and that probably helped him in a shaky finish with four dropped shots on the way home. When his caddie told him to lay up at the last, he suspected a par would be enough and duly obliged. “It was the third - and biggest - win of his career, taking him into the top 25 in the world, and makes him a probable for Europe’s Ryder Cup team and a possible for the Rio Olympics.” http://www.bbc.com
