Half of all Spaniards don’t know what antibiotics are really for

Five road crash deaths and A-7 shut in Murcia Region A SPECTACULAR crash between two lorries and two cars on the A-7 motorway through the Murcia Region has left three dead and four seriously injured. One of the refrigeration lorries veered over the central reservation and overturned and another collided with it, causing both to burst into flames, which spread to one of the two cars which ran into them. The driver and passenger of the burning car, and the driver of the first lorry which overturned were killed by the fire. Another man, who was at the wheel of the second lorry, suffered very serious burns and multiple broken bones, whilst the driver and passenger of the second car and a Guardia Civil officer had to be treated for smoke inhalation. Five ambulances, a helicopter, the Guardia Civil and the fire brigade rushed to the scene, and the four injured parties were taken to different hospitals including the Virgen de la Arrixaca and the Reina Sofía. The motorway was blocked off in a southbound direction at the site of the accident – in the tied hamlet of Monteagudo towards the coast north of its ‘parent’ municipality, Murcia city –
and traffic was diverted down the RM423, rejoining the A-7 further down. Intermittent tailbacks were reported in a northbound direction. The multiple tragedy, recorded at exactly 14.33hrs yesterday (Saturday), was one of three fatal crashes in the region within minutes of each other. A driver became trapped in his car on the RM-424 between the wine-producing town of Yecla, and Pinoso, at kilometre 15.5, and had died before the fire brigade was able to cut him free from the wreckage. A woman driving the second car involved in the crash, recorded at 14.17hrs, managed to get out by herself. Just three hours later on the high street, or C/ Mayor in El Raal – a tied hamlet of Murcia – a motorbike and a car smashed into each other opposite number 393. A man was taken to the Reina Sofía hospital, and a woman went into cardiact arrest at the scene. Medics continued to work on trying to revive her as the Armed Forces emergency response unit took her to hospital, but she passed away before she reached the centre. thinkspain
believe that antibiotics are used to kill viruses, fight colds and treat the flu. This erroneous view is all the more dangerous given that the inappropriate use of this kind of medication only serves to strengthen its real enemy: bacteria, which are becoming increasingly resistant. An EU report on antimicrobial resistance released this week reveals widespread ignorance about the real purpose of antibiotics in Spain, which scored worse than average. “The rise of resistant microbes is a threat to global public health. It is responsible for the avoidable deaths of humans and animals, increased healthcare and veterinary costs, and productivity losses,” reads the report. Last month, a US woman suffered an infection by “superbacteria” that proved immune to the strongest available antibiotics According to this Eurobarometer survey, 48% of Spaniards said that antibiotics kill viruses, while 37% knew that they don’t, compared with 43% overall in the EU. A further 45% believe they are effective against colds and flus (against 48% who say this is wrong). In the EU overall, 36% of respondents said antibiotics were good against the flu. Yet a vast majority of Spaniards, 85%, said they are aware that an inappropriate use of antibiotics makes them less effective, in line with the EU average of 84%. The confusion may be partly attributable to the fact that only 23% of Spaniards said they had received
information about these prescription drugs over the last year, compared with the European average of 33%. Those who did receive information mostly did so from their doctor (48%), significantly above the average of 32% for Europe, where people are exposed to public awareness campaigns. Spain has a strategic plan to increase outreach. Meanwhile, a report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control finds that Spain is increasingly vulnerable to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. From bad to worse And things could get worse, judging by the fact that 47% of Spaniards used antibiotics over the course of last year, according to the Eurobarometer. This puts Spain second to Malta (48%) and far above the EU average of (34%). The survey also shows that between 2013 and 2016, this rate grew nine percentage points, even as it declined by five points in neighboring France and Portugal, and by one point overall across the EU. The effects of super-resistant bacteria are already being felt. Last month, a US woman suffered an infection by “superbacteria” that proved immune to the strongest available antibiotics. It was a sign of things to come, warned the experts. Health authorities are asking for a more rational use of antibiotics, not just in humans but also in animals raised for human consumption. elpais

Spain rejected seven of every 10 asylum requests in 2015
Yearly report from Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid warns of “serious setback” in terms of international protection for displaced peoples The Spanish Commission for Refugee Aid (CEAR) warned on Thursday that last year just three out of every 10 requests for asylum that were examined were accepted in Spain. That’s 31%, down from 44% the year before. In other words, Spain rejected seven out of every 10 requests that were accepted for consideration. By nationality, Spain has received most asylum requests from Syria, with 5,724 people last year The increased controls at borders and inaction when it comes to offering legal means to request international protection in Europe and Spain has caused “a serious setback” and has put a human right such as asylum “in danger,” according to the yearly report from CEAR. In the case of Spain, which in 2015 registered 15,000 requests, the document reveals that just 3,240 were resolved, of which 31% (1,020) were granted. The EU average for granting such requests is 50%. The percentage has fallen despite a rise in the volume of requests, the report explains. The 15,000 registered in Spain in 2015 is well up on the 6,000 seen the year before. “Spain has broken a
June 2016
scrawny record,” explained CEAR general secretary Estrella Galán at the presentation of the report, given that it has only received 1% of the total number of requests in the EU, which come in at 1.3 million. Countries such as Germany and Sweden have seen 476,000 and 162,000 requests, respectively. By nationality, Spain has received most asylum requests from Syria, with 5,724 people last year. Next is Ukraine, with 3,440, and Palestine, with 809. Of the requests, 63% were from men, and 37% from women. CEAR warns that European states are putting “impediments” in the way of refugees exercising their right to asylum, forcing them to seek routes that are more and more dangerous, among which are those that include crossing the Mediterranean, which is “the deadliest route in the world,” according to the NGO. Galán explained that one in every 27 people who tries to reach Europe via that sea route ends up dead, a rate that has risen over the months of April and May to one in every 17. CEAR estimates that 3,000 people have died so far in 2016 trying to make the crossing. “International agreements have been left to flounder in the Mediterranean,” she concluded. elpais
Seven dogs have died after spending several hours in a boot
Animal protectors managed to save one puppy and are now looking for a home The animal protection society Abyda of Jaén discovered the tragedy of two adults and five puppies left in the boot of a car without water or food The Abyda Facebook page notes a member of the public had alerted them and once there t found the group of dogs ‘emaciated and asphyxiated’ after being locked in the car ‘ we don’t know for how long they had suffered with no air and we suppose someone had taken them and found they couldn’t cope. One adult bitch and two puppies were found dead, while another adult bitch and four puppies were sent to the veterinarian in an attempt to save their lives. Unfortunately the bitch had to be put down given her lamentable state. Finally only one puppy has survived, and has been baptised ‘Fauna’ and he is now up for adoption. http://www.typicallyspanish.com

Star Trek Actor Killed by own car
Anton Yelchin, who was best known for playing Chekov in the new Star Trek films, has been killed by his own car at his home in Los Angeles, police say. It struck him after rolling backwards down the steep drive at his Studio City home, pinning him against a brick postbox pillar and a security fence. He died shortly after 01:00 (08:00 GMT) on Sunday. JJ Abrams, who directed Yelchin in the first two Star Trek films, paid tribute on Twitter saying he
was “brilliant”. “You were kind. You were funny as hell, and supremely talented. And you weren’t here nearly long enough. Missing you,” he wrote. Yelchin played Pavel Chekov, the role originally made famous by Walter Koenig, in the rebooted Star Trek films released in 2009 and 2013. He reprised the role in a third film, Star Trek Beyond, which is due for release next month. Bbc.com

www.soltimes.com Mojacar is actually comprised of two distinct areas: Mojacar Pueblo (town) and Mojacar Playa (beach), roughly 2 km apart. Mojacar has a long, multi-faceted history which stretches over 4000 years. Populated by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Greeks, and Moors, it still remains an intersection of many cultures. It was under Moorish rule that Mojacar really began to flourish. The castle was built and the town walls were expanded and fortified. Even so, it remained a Muslim town on the Christian frontier and because of this, Mojacar suffered many brutal incursions. In 1488, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel came to the area to demand the submission of its local leaders. All complied except for the mayor of Mojacar. When later questioned about his absence at a meeting held near the town’s Fuente Mora (Moorish Fountain), the mayor reportedly stated that although he was a Muslim, generations of his people were Spanish by birth and that they deserved to be treated more “like brothers, not enemies…” Evidently, Ferdinand and Isabel were sufficiently impressed with the reply to accept the mayor’s pledge of loyalty and the town continued to flourish for the next four centuries. By the middle of the 18 th century, its population had reached over 10,000 people From apartments to castles, Mojácar can provide the home of your dream © Michelle Chaplow From apartments to castles, Mojácar can provide the home of your dream. Mojacar’s fortunes, however, began to change around the middle of the 19 th century when its population began to decline. The reasons were numerous. The region (technically Europe’s only desert) began to suffer severely from droughts and many residents began to leave. Some went northward to seek employment in the factories of industrialising Catalunya while others immigrated to distant places like the Americas. In fact, local legend claim that the cartoonist Walt Disney was born in the area and immigrated to the United States when he was a child.
the beach area became a favourite vacation retreat for travellers. Mojacar still has one of the highest expatriate populations in all of Spain. This was also the time that the Indalo became the symbol of Mojacar. Originally a prehistoric cave drawing found near Vélez Blanco, it represents a man holding a rainbow over his head. It is said to be a lucky totem and can be found in the front of homes and businesses throughout the province. The town, however, still remains remarkably true to its Moorish past. Mojacar is a place that begs to be explored by foot. Park the car below the town and wander upwards at your own pace. You will encounter incredible views with nearly every step. Follow the road which snakes its way toward the town or climb the stairs which also lead upward, depositing you into the residential heart of the village. Echoes of the past will engulf you.

Cutting Back on Meat May Lower Your Risk of Type 2 Diabetes National Institutes of Health.

Eating a mainly plant-based diet—especially one with lots of healthy veggies, fruit, and whole grains—may significantly lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, a new study suggests. “This study highlights that even moderate dietary changes in the direction of a healthful plant-based diet can play a significant role in the prevention of type 2 diabetes,” said study lead author Ambika Satija, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. “These findings provide further evidence to support current dietary recommendations for chronic disease prevention,” Satija added in a school news release.
increased risk of type 2 diabetes, the study revealed. The less healthy diet included foods such as refined grains, potatoes and sugar-sweetened beverages. The researchers also found that even a modest reduction in animal-based food consumption was linked to a lower type 2 diabetes risk. The reduced risk was seen with as little a change as going from five to six servings of animal-based foods per day to about four servings per day, the study said. “A shift to a dietary pattern higher in healthful plantbased foods—such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds—and lower in animal-based foods, especially red and processed meats, can confer substantial health benefits in reducing risk of type 2 diabetes,” study senior author Frank Hu said. He’s a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard.
The study included information from more than 200,000 Americans. They all completed a series of questionnaires about their diet, lifestyle, medical history and current health. The information was The study was published online June 14 in the journal PLoS Medicine. Funding was provided by the U.S. collected over 20 years. People who closely followed a plant-based diet low in animal-based foods had a 20 percent reduced risk of type 2 diabetes than those who didn’t. However, the research didn’t establish a firm cause-and-effect relationship; it only showed a link. The researchers also found that the healthier the foods, the lower the risk seemed to be. A healthy version of a plant-based diet lowered the risk of type 2 diabetes by 34 percent. A healthy diet included foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes, the study noted. But, people who opted for less healthy foods—though they still ate many plant-based foods—had a 16 percent

A history of Moorish Spain (VII) With the fall of Seville in 913; Abdar ar Rahman III was on his way to reuniting Al Andalus. In May 914 he and his army left Cordoba and marched south. With the aim of routing the rebel Ibn Hafsun; they soon arrived at Balda on the northern tip of now what is Malaga Province in Antequera. Using a scorched earth policy the Cavalry destroyed everything around the castle and did the same to half a dozen others before arriving at Malaga itself. Then Rahman III headed west along the Costa del Sol; retaking castles in modern day Fuengirola, Benahavis and inland of Marbella at Ojen. Incidentally Ojen’s name derives from the ancient Arabic word Hoxan meaning bitter. It seems the lead, nickel and iron once found in the surrounding hills made this an important mining town. Indeed in the 19th Century Ojen became central to the Spanish Industrial Revolution. Within 2 months of leaving Cordoba; Rahman III had destroyed and reclaimed seventy of forts and towns through Malaga/Cadiz. On reaching the port of Algeciras in June 914; Ibn Hafsun’s forces surrendered without a fight. Rahman III sent his naval patrols up and down the coast to destroy any vessels suspected of supplying Ibn Hafsun from the short hop across the Mediterranean; Morocco. There the Fatimid’s ruled North Africa including parts of modern day Egypt, Iraq and Sudan. Being allies of Ibn Hafsun, Rahman III expelled the lot of them from Al Andalus. He then persuaded the Maghrwaw tribe to switch allegiance from the

pause for thought Some years ago, I was running a Youth Group in our village near Preston, when one of the lads stated he could never be a Christian because of all the hypocrisy he saw amongst so-called Christians, who look really holy as they go to Church on Sundays, but live with no thought for God or anyone else the rest of the week. Trying to be understanding I asked ‘If you saw me driving a Rolls Royce through the village, apparently out of my mind and crashing into other cars, would that cause you to conclude that a Rolls Royce was a lousy car?’ His response of ‘Course not, I’d just say Burr chops is a lousy driver’ drew a good laugh from the rest of the group, but helped make the point that he shouldn’t judge Jesus Christ solely by the way His followers behaved. Yes, it would be nice to think that others seeing my life, would be attracted to my faith, but I’m well aware that’s most unlikely to happen as I, in common with many other Christians, am very human and have more than my fair share of faults. I’d certainly never buy any car (and no, I’ve never owned a Roller)
merely because of seeing how someone else drove it; I’d always want to read the spec in detail and then test it out myself. And in the same way I suggested to my young friend, the only way to appreciate the Christian Faith is to read the spec, as in the Bible, and then try it yourself. To my total amazement, this particular, highly sceptical young man did just that. Refusing the offer to borrow one of mine for fear it might in some way make him indebted to me, he bought and read his own bible and discovered that he, like so many, had thought he knew what the Bible had to say, but when for the first time he actually read it, had to acknowledge that he’d entirely misjudged its message.

Brexit would be 'negative for Spain', say economists: exports to UK could cost up to 10% more
ECONOMY experts have warned that a 'Brexit' could have negative consequences for Spain, given that the UK is its third-largest trading partner after France and Germany, and Spanish exports to Britain totalled nearly €5 billion in the first quarter of this year. Although they urge traders 'not to panic' and to 'put things into perspective', key speakers say 'extra hurdles' could be faced for industries which export to the UK, mainly food, transport and manufactured goods. In theory, commercial relations between the two countries may not need to be hugely different after a Brexit, according to two experts – Professor Santiago Carbó of Bangor University in Wales, who is also head of Financial Studies at the Savings Bank Foundation in Spain (FUNCAS), and Agusti Ulied, economics tutor at ESADE business school. But customs tariffs and paperwork could cause headaches and increase prices, they both say. The two professors comment that those British nationals who want to leave the EU, and the 'Leave' campaign itself, are basing their decision 'more on trying to avoid free movement of people than of goods' – or in a bid to prevent immigration from Europe rather than trade. Companies in the manufacturing and industrial sectors will be the worst-hit,
says Diego Zuluaga of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), since crossborder tariffs for exporting to Britain could increase their prices but as much as 10%. Zuluaga believes 'uncertainty' will reign, and will negatively affect trade, until such time as the UK and the EU have agreed on new trading terms – this, according to previous experience, may take up to 10 years, although the UK's deadline once it decides to leave the EU is just two years, according to the Lisbon Treaty. According to economist José Carlos Díez, one of the greatest problems faced by Spain in the event of a Brexit is 'financial contagion', given that Spain has the second-highest trade deficit in the world, after the USA. “If market tensions increase, this could have a negative impact on employment and GDP – the European Central Bank (BCE) buying national debt is just a firewall, and if the fire is too intense, we'll have problems,” Díez warns. “In the short term, the market may become very unsettled and nervous.” He does not believe Spanish financial entities, such as the Santander bank, in the UK will have too many problems, in the same way that US banks in Spain operate freely – although Spanish firms in Britain have already voiced grave concerns over their future in the
country in the event of a Brexit. Spain is also worried about the fact that 25% of its tourists come from the UK – in theory, a Brexit should not make a difference, but if the prices of holidays in the EU increase for British residents and their numbers declined as a result, Spain would feel the pinch. “Another aspect which could affect the Spanish economy – although not in a particularly fundamental manner – is that British residents in Spain would not have so much money to spend if the Sterling falls by between 10% and 20%, as is very likely,” Ulied continues. A census from 2015 showed 283,243 British nationals in Spain, but this does not include the still-numerous expats who continue to avoid – illegally – signing on the padrón, or census, nor those who spend several months of the year in Spain but not enough to count as a tax resident. “Uncertainty in terms of taxes, finance and eligibility to use public services will also affect the 102,498 Spaniards currently living in the UK,” Ulied continues. Their numbers rose by 12% in 2015 – one of the greatest increases seen in destination countreis

of emigrating Spaniards. Spaniards want Britain to stay A recent poll showed that 80% of Spaniards do not want the UK to leave the EU and, if they were able to vote in the referendum, it would be against a Brexit. A total of 79% believe a Brexit would have negative consequences for Spain, with 74% believing these consequences could be dire – and only 6% say they believe Spain would actually benefit from a Brexit. Nearly two-thirds firmly believe that when it comes to the crunch, Britain will vote to remain in the EU when it goes to the polls on Thursday. A referendum on EU membership looks very unlikely in Spain, since 78% believe being in the Union has been beneficial and only 14% think it has been bad for the country – in fact, 57% believe being an EU member has actually helped Spain deal with its recent financial crisis. Nearly a half – 48% - believe Spain has become more pro-Europe since it joined the EU and that Spanish society in general feels more 'European', whilst around a third, or 34%, believe the exact opposite. All Spain's main political parties vying for election this month are keen for Britain to stay in the EU, and all of them are in favour of Spain's own membership continuing. thinkspain

Spain House Prices Register Biggest Rise Since 2007
House prices in Spain increased by 6.3% in the first quarter of 2016, year-on-year, representing their biggest rise since the third quarter of 2007, when prices increased by 9.2%, according to the latest House Price Index data published by the National Statistics Institute. This latest increase, which is over two points higher than the increase registered in the fourth quarter of 2015 (4.2%), is the eighth consecutive quarter in which housing prices have registered positive annual rates. By type of dwelling, the price of new housing rose by 6.1% compared with the first quarter of 2015 – its biggest increase since the first quarter of 2008 – while the price of second hand housing increased by 6.4%, registering its most significant growth since the third quarter of 2007. Quarter-on-quarter (first quarter of 2016 over fourth quarter of 2015), house prices increased by 1.5%,
thus returning to positive rates after registering a decline of 0.1% in the fourth quarter of last year. Between January and March, new housing prices increased by 2.6% quarter-on-quarter, which is 1.3% more than in the previous quarter, while the price of second hand housing experienced a quarter-onquarter rise of 1.3%, in contrast to the 0.3% decline registered in the previous quarter. El Mundo reported that all of Spain’s regions registered positive year-on-year rates in the price of housing during the first quarter. The greatest increases registered in the first quarter, over the same period of 2015, were those for Madrid (9.7%) and the Balearic Islands (8.8%), while the smallest increases were registered in Castilla-La Mancha (1.5%), Castilla y León (1.7%) and Extremadura (1.7%).

Top bosses including Sir Richard Branson, the Premier League chair and car industry executives have backed Remain ahead of Thursday’s EU vote. Premier League chair Richard Scudamore said the 20 clubs in the top tier wanted to remain and that leaving would be “incongruous” in the context of the league’s commitment to “openness”. Meanwhile, Sir Richard warned a British exit from the EU would be “devastating” for the John Longworth, chair of Vote Leave business council, said the UK would be better off outside the EU. “The single market isn’t a nirvana, it’s a mirage. single market’s a protectionist area. “[Under Brexit] We’d be able to remove the external barriers, reduce the cost of clothing and footwear. Reduce the cost of food products we can’t produce in the UK because at the moment the EU puts tariffs up to the rest of the world which we have to pay for,” he told the BBC’s Today programme. But the car industry trade body, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT), warned leaving the EU would increase costs and threaten jobs. “Remaining will allow the UK to retain the influence on which the unique and successful UK automotive sector depends,” said chief executive Mike Hawes. bbc.com

MUNDI
Arbitration claim relates to an investment in a British oil and natural gas joint venture Repsol SA said it faces a $5.5 billion arbitration claim from a Chinese state-controlled energy firm, adding to problems tied to one of the Spanish oil company’s largest acquisitions. Sinopec International Petroleum Exploration and Production Corp. and its subsidiary Addax Petroleum U.K. are seeking compensation to cover their initial investment in 2012 in a venture in the British North Sea with Talisman Energy Inc., a Canadian company that Repsol bought last year for $8.3 billion, excluding debt. The claim also includes ”lost opportunities” from the British joint venture that has stakes in 57 North Sea oil and gas fields and related infrastructure, including pipelines and processing facilities, Repsol said on Friday, without providing further details. Repsol said the $5.5 billion claim is groundless and has been classed as “remote risk” by the firm’s legal advisers. It said the claim, which was filed in Singapore, reflected Sinopec’s belief that its $1.5 billion investment in the U.K. venture “has not delivered the results expected.” Addax confirmed that it and Sinopec had filed arbitration proceedings
to collect at least $5.5 billion, but declined to provide further details citing confidentiality obligations between the parties. Sinopec wasn’t immediately reachable for comment. The news is the most recent wrinkle for Repsol’s acquisition of Talisman completed in May last year. The Talisman deal was meant to bring new production capacity for a company that saw a large portion of its resources wrested away by a populist Argentine government in 2012. Folding in Talisman, a Canadian owner of shale acreage and offshore oil rigs, nearly doubled Repsol’s daily oil output and lowered the Spanish company’s exposure to volatile Latin American economies by increasing its exposure to North America. http://www.wsj.com

The Bankthus of devaluing Alqueria the loan
Alqueria’s currency, as all avid readers will remember is the ‘Raro’. It is not linked to the gold standard nor is there a buoyant stock market. This is reflected in the exchange rate which at the time of writing stands at 35,376,298.76 Raros to the Euro. The currency is simply waste paper and only used by the Bank of Alqueria in its foreign dealings, Remitroot in its various forms is the coinage of choice within the Pueblo. Alqueria’s state bank has extremely interesting fiscal policies many of which are subject to investigation making them ‘sub judice’. It is the only international financial institution which can make in e f f i c i e n c y, ineptitude and total inertia actually pay, making the Bank the only profitable establishment in Alqueria. The head of the Bank is one ‘Briefcase Carlos’ who is ably assisted by ‘Blackmask Alberto’ both giants in the fields of drunkenness and womanising but totally out of their depths regarding economics. They are obviously well qualified when compared to their international counterparts. The Bank’s offices are in the Calle Horno an ideal place for book cooking, a discipline that Carlos and Alberto excel. The illustrious pair, due to a typing error once gave a loan, the equivalent of over 2,000,00.00 Euros to a stray dog. The remedy was simple, print more money to significantly increase inflation
to the tune of 25 cents. A new arrival in Alqueria foolishly thought the currency was negotiable and had his savings paid into the bank, it was never seen again but Briefcase Carlos and Blackmask Alberto spent two drunken weeks on the Costa del Sol. Loco Paco once drew his forty Euro Stupidity Disability Allowance, known affectionately as the ‘Maracas de Machín Fondo’, in Raros. This amounted to over 100,000,000 Raros which gave Paco a hernia while transporting it, this increased his disability to fortyfive Euros. Alberto and Carlos were naturally upset at this extra financial burden and subsequently paid Paco in Neotropic C o r m o r a n t droppings, Paco seemed quite happy though. Alberto and Carlos did try their hand at the well practised art of corruption but being inept and not having the slightest clue when it came to finance legal or otherwise ended up out-of-pocket and the Bank actually went into profit. Blackmask Alberto had to repossess his own home while Briefcase Carlos arranged a ‘bridging loan’ for himself but as he considered himself a bad risk charged an excessively high rate of interest and went bankrupt. The Bank of Alqueria is an institution which reflects the very essence of the Pueblo and its people, badly run, fulfilling no useful function whatsoever and fundamentally anarchistic.
LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com RENOUNCING AN INHERITANCE IN FAVOUR OF ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE QUESTION: My brother and I recently inherited a villa in Mojacar worth 400,000€. I agreed with my brother that he keeps the property and I would compensate him. We discussed this with our solicitor and with this as the background agreement, we assisted the notary and we both signed a deed in which I renounced in his favour and he accepted the inheritance of the house, half directly and half due to me renouncing my half in his favour. The solicitor is now saying that the tax office is claiming that, in respect of my half, two taxable transactions have taken place: 1. Inheritance tax on the half to me and 2. a taxable donation to my brother. Is this correct?
ANSWER: I am afraid you have made a very expensive mistake. What the tax office is claiming is correct. In Spain if you renounce and establish the new beneficiaries on the deed then the tax office taxes the transaction twice (inheritance+donation).
The best solution, depending on the way the will was worded, would have been:
Option 1. If the will states that everything goes to the two of you with the right to accrue the other, then you could have signed a full unconditional renunciation to your father’s estate (which is not taxable as long as it is unconditional). In this case the next in line according to the will would have been your brother (without you having to name him, which makes it a donation) who would inherit the complete property directly from your father. Option 2 . If the will stated that you are both the heirs and then as a second step the grandchildren, then solution A. would not work. In this case you should have both inherited as stated on the will and then you could have signed a deed to resolve the joint ownership, which is much cheaper than a donation. The only angle to your situation now would be to speak to the tax office to see if there is any way you can sign a deed of modification at the notary, claiming that you made a mistake.

The Idiot With the Pepper
We had to face the Perfect Storm of Shopping – a boiling hot Saturday in Mercadona. Arriving in the car park it was obvious that most of the customers were suffering from Directional Blindness, causing them to lose all comprehension of traffic flow, becoming oblivious to the direction arrows on the car park asphalt, and losing all ability to park within the designated car parking spaces. Descending to shop level it was painful to see the poor sufferers with vacant expressions on their faces, wandering in random directions with their trolleys – a symptom of Directional Blindness is that those afflicted lose all awareness of the world around them, causing them to meander aimlessly up and down the aisles, occasionally parking their trolleys sideways on while they stare blankly at the goods on offer. We have a tried and tested shopping strategy – Pete pushes the trolley while I gofer. This works well as I can generally nip in and out between the pondering masses with the speed and agility of a sheepdog through a herd of cows. Fruit and Veg, always a hub of ponderance, requires a different approach – Pete chooses and bags, I weigh. I stand in the queue for the weighing machine, several bags in hand, repeating to myself ’94, 38, 46, hut-hut- hut,’ (Maybe not the hut-hut-hut part) and hoping that I can remember which item was 94, which was 38 and which was 46 – or was it 56? I had amassed a hefty total of bags by the time I reached the front. I weighed and stuck labels,

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk and returned to the trolley with my booty, and soon we were at the tail of the human snake that was the till queue. The time and motion perfection that is the Biggs Shopping Tactic swung into motion. Pete unloaded, Maria Carmen swiped, and I packed. Fine, until Maria Carmen held up a pepper. ‘You have not weighed it.’ I looked at the queue behind us, stretching way back into the distance, and my heart sank. I grabbed the pepper and galloped back to Fruit and Veg, slammed it on the scales and sped back, expecting to be greeted by a lynch mob of detained shoppers, all wanting to know which idiot had forgotten to weigh their pepper. But no, Maria Carmen had somehow sidetracked our shopping, and had continued her task with the next customer. What’s more, she did it with a smile!
Ingenious Fitness Bus Will Let You Work Out During Your Commute London residents too busy to hit the gym every once in a while will soon get the chance to work out during their commute, thanks to a fleet of ingenious fitness buses packed full of stationary bikes. “The Wheels on the Bus” children’s song is going to have a whole new meaning once British fitness company 1Rebel launches its new Ride2Rebel buses on the streets of London. The modified public transportation vehicles will feature stationary bikes instead of seats, allowing commuters to spin at their hearts’ content on their way to work. Buses will travel from four pick-up points in north, east, south
and west London along the city’s most popular commute routes, all the way to the 1Ride studio where riders can come in for a shower and a smoothie before work. http://www.odditycentral.com/
Tattoo Artist Gets World’s First Tattoo Machine Prosthesis
After French tattoo artist JC Sheitan Tenet lost his right hand 22 years ago, he never thought he would ever be able to use it again. He trained himself to use his left hand to do tattoos, but after recently receiving the world’s first tattoo machine prosthesis, he can proudly call himself ambidextrous. Tenet got the idea for the unique steampunk-inspired prosthesis after seeing the work of Jean Louis Gonzales, a.k.a. Gonzal, an artist and engineer known for his mechanised taxidermies and skulls. After meeting Gonzal at various
tattoo conventions, Tenet asked him if he could somehow mechanise an old prosthesis he had lying around the house, and the two started working on a prototype. http://www.odditycentral.com/

Ingredients • 1 1/2 pounds vine-ripened tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped • Tomato juice • 1 cup cucumber, peeled, seeded and chopped • 1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper • 1/2 cup chopped red onion • 1 small jalapeno, seeded and minced • 1 medium garlic clove, minced • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1 lime, juiced • 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce • 1/2 teaspoon toasted, ground cumin • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper V2 tablespoons fresh basil leaves, chiffonade
Directions Fill a 6-quart pot halfway full of water, set over high heat and bring to a boil. Make an X with a paring knife on the bottom of the tomatoes. Drop the tomatoes into the boiling water for 15 seconds, remove and transfer to an ice bath and allow to cool until able to handle, approximately 1 minute. Remove and pat dry. Peel, core and seed the tomatoes. When seeding the tomatoes, place the seeds and pulp into a fine mesh strainer set over a bowl in order to catch the juice. Press as much of the juice through as possible and then add enough bottled tomato juice to bring the total to 1 cup. Place the tomatoes and juice into a large mixing bowl. Add the cucumber, bell pepper, red onion, jalapeno, garlic clove, olive oil, lime juice, balsamic vinegar, Worcestershire, cumin, salt and pepper and stir to combine. Transfer 1 1/2 cups of the mixture to a blender and puree for 15 to 20 seconds on high speed. Return the pureed mixture to the bowl and stir to combine. Cover and chill for 2 hours and up to overnight. Serve with chiffonade of basil. http://www.foodnetwork.com

El Chopo Celebrates
More than 60 residents of El Chopo in Arboleas gathered together on Saturday 11th June to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday. The party was organised by local residents, led by Denise Hutchings and Tina Davies. Celebrations included a tea party with a special birthday cake in honour of Queen Elizabeth and a competition for the “Best Crown”, all followed by a sumptuous buffet and drinks, with festivities continuing late into the evening. Everyone agreed what an enjoyable afternoon it was – helped by the glorious Spanish weather, the delicious food and a glass or two of something refreshing! In addition, 100€ was raised for the charity “Walk For Life.”

Witches’ Mountain by Gerald R. Wright
“The more he thought about it, the more he knew that Kate and the mountain would draw him back-especially Kate.” Our main character, Rick Jackson was 27 years old, reasonably open-minded, stoic, pragmatic and gregarious., quite a nice chap, in fact. A small, engineering company he had worked for as a salesman had folded but he was fortunate in finding similar work with another small business covering a wide and diverse territory of farms, lumber companies and engineering works. He loved the open country and mountains in their majestic natural beauty and grandeur. Just as well as his work covered the infamous mountain-Witches’ Mountain linked to the Salem trials. The novel begins with Rick driving his Mustang through the mountains, it’s twilight. The colours around him were spectacular: yellows, oranges and reds-a sight worth seeing and remembering. A comfort stop heading to Charlesburgh made him feel “as if he was in the back of beyond and somehow back in the past.” Was this moonshine country? Possibly. Whilst having a snack he met a typical hillbilly who advised him to go along the ridge, used by logging companies. Innocent enough but this is where the fun and mystery begins. He has a steep climb with sharp hair pin bends to test his nerve. The mist drifted “like fingers-long, vertical fingers” opening up “like curtains” as he passed through. A nice atmospheric touch.
imagined he had! Did he imagine it all or was this paranormal? When Rick drives along the same route, he discovers a large bundle lying in the middle of the road. He imagined it lying in a pool of blood. A flicker of lights on his left suggested flames and burning, unnerving even for a sceptic. Was this a body of another trucker? A dead body presumably? He couldn’t swerve safely and kept going forward waiting for the impact. Surprisingly, the impact didn’t happen: “There was no body, no pool of blood and no flames in the wood.” A return journey via Black Ridge, hopefully another comfort stop was perplexing. The tarmac was cracked and broken, the sign rusted, weeds had invaded the place and the roof had caved in. There was no sign of life or activity. He moved on to Spiller Township which reminded him of the cowboy days, an old west frontier town where you’d see plenty of gunfights. Another stop and an encounter with the gossip Mabel, a ghost who had died seven years ago. At this point he meets the love of his life, Kate, a Southern Belle and very pretty as you’d expect. Her mother had been married to Joe Kiley. Rick felt bewitched by her “as if by an irresistible magnetism. A moth to a flame.” Was it Kate or the mystery of the mountain? Her Great Granma was Roberta Elizabeth Lee and she had the “Talent.” She could see into the future and acted as a mediator “to stop things blowing up too much” and she predicts a “catastrophe.” But who will take over from her?
Rick became “decidedly uncomfortable” after his encounter with a rough-looking trucker displaying a vivid scar on his face at the Black Ridge Motel and Restaurant, a mountain truck stop. He later discovered that the trucker was Joe Kiley and he had left his old Kenworth truck outside in the parking lot. Mack and his wife Jenny owned the hotel. The plot moves slowly when Kiley left behind a camera after speaking to Rick. Our main character wanted to catch him to return it but it didn’t quite work out like that.
A second encounter with the old Kenworth truck seeming to be on the wrong side of the road, forced Rick into pulling the wheel over to the right to avoid a collision before realising it was the phantom truck: no truck, no trailer, no sound. Nothing.
We discover that Rick wasn’t superstitious but once he gleaned of the accident with Kiley’s truck where he lost control of his brakes, crashed through the barrier, left the road and rolled over and over down the mountain he wasn’t sure. Kiley was thrown through the windshield and his truck caught fire. What is coincidental was that this tragedy had occurred two years ago to the very day that Rick conversed with him or
Rick gets drawn into this paranormal world of Witches’ Mountain, full of danger and unpredictable. Can he understand it and survive its force, the powers of darkness? How would he have felt knowing that “something disastrous was imminent?” Armageddon? An excellent read for young adults in particular. Plenty of blood and gore.
Special Offers Visit:
During the Salem witch trials it seems that some of those accused took refuge on the mountain and since then there have been battles between forces of good against evil. In the past, fires and pestilence have helped to restore some sense of order.

patio include a pergola? It can work hard for you right into the evening. The pillars and crossbeams of your pergola provide a great platform for a variety of lighting options, from subtle recessed lighting that illuminates your dining table to festive strings of bistro lights that add a fun party atmosphere. Everybody loves the magical quality of moonlight on a summer night. But the moon doesn’t always cooperate. Enter the next best thing: moonlighting. Mounting lights in the trees overhead or from the gable of a roof creates a beautiful moonlight effect on your deck or patio, as light dapples through the trees. It would be a shame to head inside. Landscape Lighting Highlights Your Summer Garden You’ve put a lot of thought, effort, and expense into your property’s trees, shrubs, garden beds and specimen plantings. Why let them hide in the dark? Evening can be a magical time in the garden — as long as you don’t trip and land face first in the hydrangea bush. http://www.neavegroup.com

Spain stun Samoa to qualify for Rio sevens Ignacio Martin scored a last-gasp try to fire Spain to a stunning 22-19 upset of top seeds Samoa in Monaco and secure the 12th and final qualifying spot for the men’s rugby sevens tournament at the Rio Olympics. Spanish players wept in joy after pulling off the shock at the Olympic repechage tournament on Sunday and the unheralded Europeans will now compete with global powers Fiji and New Zealand when the format makes its Games debut.
Even although the most important of the year is still to come, the championship of Spain whch will be held in Guadalajara in the first week of July , Club Stella Maris has already won countless titles in this season 2015/2016 . In the Almeria competition the club took 30 medals in different categories gfrom escuela to promo, 2 gold and 2 silver which were taken by local gymnast Beth McCutcheon. In the Andalusia championship held in Seville in May the club won in different categories and have 3 Andalusian champions, 2 runners up and 3 third places and in addition 28 medals between gold , silver and bronze . The club has many childfren which practise the sport and artistic gymnastics is growing steadily in
Almeria. The palacio de mediterraneo juegos in Almeria is where the girls train every day. From the age of 4 onwards all children can enjoy this sport and learn many important values of the world , the values of respect , humility , companionship also the ability to overcome and confront problems and facing them without fear with the love and family within their sport Within our team we do not only teach them how to reach out and achievetheir aims but to live in a community and respect others. It would be fantastic and the top of of our dreams if our girls and the team could be sponsored by a company to help achieve their goals. The trainers for Stella Maris are former Spanish champion and nominated Olympian Blanca Barreras , Juan Jose Nuñez , and Felipe .
“I am still trying to take it in,” Spain player Angel Lopez said. “This is a dream for us. We are going to be Olympians. We believed that we are good enough, but wow, this is pretty special.” Samoa had upset world series champions Fiji at the Paris Sevens last month and were heavy favourites to take the final berth with the shock loss to Spain leaving their coach Damian McGrath inconsolable. “I am at a loss for words right now as all our hard work is snatched away at the death,” the English former rugby league professional tweeted. “Thanks to so many people for your unwavering support.”

Rugby Club Huercal Overa Show Spirit
The El Hornillo Stadium in Huercal-Overa saw the first ever game of Rugby Union played on the weekend of the 11th June, with Huercal Overa Under 18s taking on Union Rugby Almeria U18s followed by the Senior side competing against the Lomos Plateados (Union Rugby Almeria Veterans). Prior to the main match up a presentation was made to the family of Juan Pedro Enciso Cascales, a man who had links to Union Rugby Almeria and a prominent figure in the Rugby community in Almeria aswell as being a resident of Huercal Overa. The plaque was presented by the Mayor of Huercal Overa Domingo Fernandez and Head Coach for Rugby Club Huercal Overa Pedro Fernandez Pastor. The objective of both games was for the players to get to grips with actually playing the game, as it is very different to training (which is Tues & Thurs at El Hornillo) so the results were not important. Which is lucky because both games ended with the visitors victorious, but both local sides went over for tries!!!
