On Saturday the president had condemned media reporting of the number of people attending his inauguration. White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said there was “an obsession... to delegitimise this president. We’re not going to sit around and take it.” But photos appear to show more people attended the inauguration of Mr Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama in 2009. Mr Priebus said on Fox News Sunday that the “media from day one has been talking about delegitimising the election”. He said Mr Trump’s presidency would fight such coverage “tooth and nail every day”. The latest row was mainly sparked by the inauguration figures. There were no official estimates. Mr Trump said
Key figures in Donald Trump’s administration have become embroiled in a fresh war of words with the media during a visit to the CIA on Saturday that it “looked like a million and a half people”, but provided no evidence. He called reporters “among the most dishonest human beings on Earth” for saying it was far lower. His press secretary Sean Spicer outlined figures amounting to 720,000 people in Washington’s National Mall, despite also saying that “no-one had numbers” for the inauguration. Ms Conway insisted there was “no way to really quantify crowds” and, taking offence at a laugh from the reporter, said: “You can laugh at me all you want. It’s symbolic of the way we are treated by the press the way you just laughed at me.” She also highlighted another issue that caused friction with the media - the Time Magazine reporter who incorrectly
reported that a bust of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr had been removed from the Oval Office. The reporter later apologised for the error. Mr Trump on Sunday tweeted about television ratings of the inauguration, saying that 31 million people had watched, 11 million more than four years ago. He also referred to Saturday’s day of protests that saw millions in the US and hundreds of thousands around the globe take to the streets in some 600 demonstrations against his presidency. His initial tweet said he was “under the impression that we just had an election”, asking: “Why didn’t these people vote?” A later tweet said that “peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy”.

Dutch PM Rutte: ‘If you don’t like it here, then leave
Weeks before Dutch voters go to the polls, Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said that anyone who rejects the country’s values should leave. “Act normal, or go away,” he says, in a message seen as taking on the antiimmigration Freedom party currently running high in the opinion polls. The Dutch felt increasingly uncomfortable with people who abused the very freedom they came in search of, Mr Rutte argued. Elections are taking place on 15 March. Geert Wilders’ Freedom party (PVV) is running neck-and-neck in the polls with Mr Rutte’s liberal VVD and branded Mr Rutte’s message as a
downright lie. “The man of open borders, asylum tsunami, mass immigration, Islamisation, lies and deceit,” he tweeted. But even if Mr Wilders wins the election he will struggle to form a coalition, after Mr Rutte ruled out forming a government with the PVV. Political commentators pointed out that the election was now being run on the national mood rather than traditional issues such as the economy and the government’s handling of the financial crisis. Last week Conservative CDA leader Sybrand Buma accused the prime minister, who came to power in October 2010, of presiding over a “moral crisis”.
Mr Rutte’s full-page ad appeared on Monday in several Dutch newspapers and he gave further details in an interview with the daily, Algemeen Dagblad (AD). He singled out the case of bus company Qbuzz that was censured by the Dutch human rights institute for turning down an immigrant applying for the job of bus driver because he refused to shake women’s hands. It found that shaking hands was not a key part of the job whereas the man’s freedom of religion was affected. “I think it’s a bizarre verdict,” he told AD. “Qbuzz is of course absolutely right. Surely a driver can’t say ‘I refuse to shake a woman’s hand because it doesn’t fit my beliefs’?
“That’s precisely why I and many other people are rebelling. Because the norm here is that you shake hands with each other.” Mr Rutte also complained about antisocial behaviour on public transport and on the streets, but particularly targeted those who refused to adapt to Dutch values, harassed women in short skirts and gay men, and branded ordinary people as racists. “If you live in a country where you get so annoyed with how we deal each other, you have a choice. Get out! You don’t have to be here!”

May promises frank talk with Trump
Theresa May promises frank talk with Trump after women protest Prime Minister Theresa May promised on Sunday to challenge any “unacceptable” talk when she meets President Donald Trump later this week, as she tries to secure Britain’s “special relationship” with the new U.S. administration.
May, Britain’s second female premier, made the comments after thousands of women marched in London on Saturday to protest about Trump’s attitude to women, joining demonstrations held in major cities across the globe. She told the BBC she would use Friday’s meeting in Washington to discuss issues including future U.S.UK trading relations, following Trump’s promise to put “America first” in his inauguration
speech on Friday.
Since Britons voted last year to leave the European Union, May’s government has been keen to deepen ties with the United States and other nations outside Europe to show that Brexit will not diminish its standing in the world. May indicated she would not shy away from any difficult issues, when asked about the controversy over Trump’s comments on women. This erupted last year during the presidential election campaign over a 2005 video in which he boasted about grabbing women’s genitals. “I’ve already said that some of the comments that Donald Trump has made in relation to women are unacceptable, some of those he himself has apologised for,” May said. “When I sit down (with
Trump) I think the biggest statement that will be made about the role of women is the fact that I will be there as a female prime minister,” she said. “Whenever there is something that I find unacceptable I won’t be afraid to say that to Donald Trump.”

Trump’s election has raised questions over the future of the so-called “special relationship” that has underpinned close British-American ties for decades, but the new U.S. leader has said he believes Brexit will be “a great thing”. May, who initially struggled to build relations with Trump’s team, said she would also use the meeting to discuss the NATO defence alliance and challenges such as defeating terrorism and the conflict in Syria.

If that describes your feelings, then I can only say that I have some Good News and some Bad News for you. But first the Good News; which is that as from Thursday 18th January, an English Language Communion Service is to be held at 11:00 am on the third Thursday of each month in the Community Centre in Aljambra, Albox. The Bad News of course is that for anyone living in the Almanzora Valley, Bang goes your excuse for not getting to Church! Well, I’m not sure that every would-be Church-goer in the area rose to that challenge, but certainly a sufficient number did, to require us quite quickly to increase the number of Services (now held 2nd and last Thursdays and 2nd Sunday evening of each month) and two years ago, to open another Church nearby at Llanos del Peral, which now holds regular, well-attended Services every Sunday Morning. And so the amazing thing is that
tomorrow, 26th January 2017 will mark the 10th anniversary of the start of Anglican (Church of England) Services in the Almanzora Valley, which I believe is something worth celebrating. So the Service tomorrow at Aljambra, Albox will include thanksgiving to God for His inspiration for starting this work in this area and encouraging its growth in two churches over this ten year period, and giving thanks too for the help and support of the local communities. But of course, whilst we’d love to see you, you don’t have to attend this Service or that at Llanos on Sunday to thank God for all His goodness. We can, and I believe should, do that privately on a continuing basis. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any who wish to Worship, but further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www. mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

I wonder how many remember my first mentioning Church Services in Albox. I’d received comments from several folk that Mojacar was just too far away for them to travel for Church, but that if there were an Anglican Church closer to hand, then they’d gladly support it. So, addressing all who had expressed that view, on 10th January 2007, I wrote in Sol Times:

This suggests that the increased popularity of PMI may be down to a recovery in the economy and companies taking more staff, rather than fears about the state of the NHS. After falling steeply between 2008 and 2011 and then staying flat, demand for private medical insurance cover in Britain rose by 2.1% in 2015 with just over 4 million people insured. The figures, compiled by healthcare consultancy LaingBuisson, account for the period until the end of 2015. Figures for 2016 are not yet available. Philip Blackburn, an economist at LaingBuisson, said: “There has been a clear rise in interest in private healthcare recently as more and more people are dissatisfied with higher waiting on the NHS and increased restrictions on NHS treatment. Private medical cover will benefit from this, and there is a wide choice of policy options at

different prices to attract customers.” The rise in sales of private medical insurance (PMI) comes despite increases in insurance premium tax (IPT) during the period from 6% to 9.5%, which has made policies more expensive. But the private medical industry is still far below its peak in 2008, when 4.35 million people – 12.4% of the UK population – had private cover. After the rise in 2015, a total of 4,022,000 people have cover, or 10.6% of the population. The entire rise in private cover is coming through company schemes, where the

Notes on a Scandal. Zoe Heller
‘You betrayed me. You told Bangs. What an idiot I’ve been to trust you. All that filth and lies you’ve been writing. You’re exploiting me.’ The book was shortlisted for the Booker prize in 2003 after receiving incredible reviews, the film in 2006. Sheba, a teacher of pottery meets Barbara Covett, a history teacher at St. Georges. Their friendship blossoms but turns sour once Sheba realises that her so-called friend has chronicled her affair with Steven, a minor at the school and once published will live richly off the proceeds! Sheba (Bathsheba) comes from a privileged middle/upper class, affluent family but she has not nourished the success and happiness she deserves. She drifted into marriage at twenty, with an older man, Richard who has already had a failed marriage behind him and children. He is trendy, decent, welleducated but not wonderfully exciting. Bill Nighy takes on this role with gusto. By the end of the novel she has lost his support and love. He is disgusted at her behaviour and she in turn becomes disgusted by Barbara’s smothering and intrusive nature. Poor Sheba. Her flaw is her stupidity and naivety. She forfeits everything through one stupid mistake. Polly, her seventeen year old daughter is a handful. She hates her mother, gets expelled from school for extreme bullying and then runs away from home. A wild child beyond discipline. On the other hand, there’s Ben, a Downe syndrome loveable child who is a handful for different reasons. Barbara is stern, matronly and extremely lonely after being rejected
Special Offers Visit:
by a former female lover. She becomes jealous of all the attention that Sheba attracts and notes this in her manuscript. The story hints early on about her unhealthy attraction and obsession with Sheba. At times we can empathise with her loneliness and desire to be loved more so in the novel than in the film. Judi Dench is manipulative and scheming in the film. Sheba, played by Cate Blanchett is just naïve and follows her own instincts. She likes to live on the knife-edge and craves excitement. Like a fool, she gets involved with a young guy from school and gets a kick out of it. She becomes insanely jealous of the thought that he might ‘dump’ her one day for a young girl and inevitably he tires of her and replaces her with a girl his own age. The reader is waiting for the bubble to burst and Sheba having to face inevitable consequences. She loses everythingher family, marriage, home, job and her reputation. The guys create smutty jokes about her and she is wickedly mocked. It is not surprising that one person who is obsessed with her stands by her after betraying her dirty little secret. Yes you’ve guessed it-Barbara. She is forced into taking early retirement because she knew of the affair and failed to notify the Head. Her consolation prize is the disgraced Sheba who she can smother to death and of course her manuscript which she can make a fortune out of! An exciting read and brilliant film. Obviously a message in there for the ladies. Publisher: Penguin. ISBN; 0-141-01225-0

How to Secure Your Google Account Out of all your online accounts, there’s a good chance that Google holds most of your information. Think about it: if you use Gmail for email, Chrome for web browsing, and Android for your mobile OS, then you’re already using Google for almost everything you do. Now that you’re thinking about how much is stored and saved by Google, think about how secure that account is. What if someone got access to your Google account? That would include bank statements in Gmail, personal files in Drive, stored pictures in Google Photos, chat logs from Hangouts, and a lot more. Scary thought, yeah? Let’s talk about how to make sure your account is as secure as it can be. Start with a Security Check up. Google makes checking your account security very easy: just use the built-in Security Check up tool on your accounts “Sign in & security” page. When you click the “Security Check up” option, you’ll be tossed into a multi-section form that will basically just ask you to review and confirm some information—this shouldn’t take that long, but you’ll definitely want to take your time and thoroughly review the information you find here. The first option is very simple: confirm
January 2017
your recovery phone number and email address. Basically, if you get locked out of your Google account, you’ll want to make sure this stuff is correct. I don’t mind using a second email address but will not give them my phone number, if they get hacked then the nuisance calls start! Next will be to see who has connected to your google account in the past month. This lets you know if you should change your password or if it is still secure. Followed by “Clean Up Apps That Have Permission to Access Your Account”. Some need access such as your email app but most don’t! So be very choosy what can access your account! The list will not only show what the app or device is, but exactly what it has access to. If you don’t remember granting something access (or just no longer use the app/device in question), then click the “remove” button to revoke its account access. If it’s an account you actually use and accidentally remove, you’ll just have to re-grant it access the next time you log in. The final stage would be to setup or check your “2 step login”. I’m not, as of today, completely sure that typing in your login (email address) and then getting a one-time password through your phone, every time, is any easier or more secure than using the normal Login and Password. You have now checked your google security and have peace of mind again and it only took a couple of minutes! See you next week unless you have a computer problem that needs putting right.

Sky is set to report a 10 per cent drop in profits on Thursday, according to a prediction by investment firm UBS. The broadcaster is expected to announce a fall in pre-tax profits to £673m in the six months to December, due to the increased costs of its Premier League coverage. However, the UBS report also forecast strong growth from Sky, with underlying revenue growth set to be up 5.5 per cent in the first half to £13bn, with UK business growing 5 per cent, Italy up by 3.5 per cent, and jump of nine per cent in Germany. This will be the first set of results to be released

since Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox confirmed a takeover bid which valued Sky at £18.5bn. Fox needs 75 per cent of Sky’s independent shareholders to accept the deal. The UBS report suggested that investors are likely to be comforted by the evidence of Sky’s growing momentum. The analysis, which was put together by UBS’s head of telecoms research, also described Fox’s bid as a “f loor rather than a ceiling”. It suggested that Fox might raise their bid if Sky continued to improve operating momentum. The predicted drop in profits was mainly accounted for by the increasingly intense rivalry between BT and Sky for sports broadcasting rights. Sky paid £4.2bn for a three year deal on the Premier League rights last year, up from the previous price of £2.3bn. The two sports broadcasting giants will go head to head again in the next few weeks. UEFA released an invitation to tender last week, and bids will be expected in March. BT currently holds the live broadcasting rights for all European club football, having paid £897m in 2013. The UBS report also suggested that BT and Sky could split the rights to the Champions League for a satisfactory outcome on both sides.

Spain approves fast-track law to settle mortgage crisis
The Spanish government said on Friday it had approved a royal decree that will give banks three months to reach settlements with customers who were sold mortgages with interest rate floors that were not clearly explained. The royal decree - a law fast-tracked through Parliament - aims to allow customers that were sold these mortgages to agree some form of compensation with their banks free of charge. It also aims to prevent a wave of lawsuits against the banks. These home loans were sold with an interest rate that could not fall below a certain

They have increased the exempt amount for spouse and descendants from 175,000 to 250,000. Just as important is that unlike the old system, where if you received one euro less than 175,000 euro you would only be entitled to 16,000 euro exemption (in other words basically no exempt amount), with the new system, after 250,000 euro you do not lose the exemption completely as you are allowed to make use of it on those first 250,000 euros as long as what you received does not go above 350,000 euro. They have increased reduction in the taxable base for spouses or children under the age of 18 inheriting the main home up to 100% if worth less than 1,24000 and a sliding scale after that. In addition to this they have also increased other exemptions like the one available for the inheritance of family businesses and agricultural land in production. Who do these increased exemptions apply to? Beneficiaries resident in Andalucia of an estate regardless of where it is situated (as long as the preexisting wealth of the
beneficiary is less than 401,000 euro). Thanks to the sentence of the European Court of Justice of 3/4/2014 that established that Spain could not discriminate non-residents of Spain who were residents in other countries of the European Union, all non-residents of Spain (that are residents of other European Union Countries)can also take advantage of these exemptions. Please note though that as you may imagine you could not claim the exemption established for the main home because if the beneficiary is a non-resident he/she cannot claim the Spanish house to be his/her main home. Also note that if you are resident of a country outside the European Union you cannot nota advantage of the sentence of the European Court of Justice (as long as the preexisting wealth of the beneficiary is less than 401000 euro) These new exemptions are excellent tools for estate planning and will allow for many families who would have previously paid to pay no inheritance on the Spanish estate by distributing their estate amongst their family (depending on the size of the estate) in the most tax efficient way. Please not that what is explained above is a very simplified version of the situation and that there are lots of ifs and buts surrounding this subject so you will need to obtain individualised advice from a solicitor. British renewables firms vying for $50bn of Saudi contracts
British renewables firms are preparing to compete for a multi-million dollar windfall by snapping up contracts to develop wind, solar and power storage projects in Saudi Arabia through the kingdom’s $50bn renewables drive. Within weeks the world’s largest producer of oil will launch a tender process for an ambitious renewable energy program which is expected to involve investment of between $30bn and $50bn by 2023 to help kick its addiction to fossil fuels. The Saudis are planning to shift their power sector towards renewables, which is less expensive than its oil-burning power plants, in order to meet its rocketing
demand for power which is increasing at a rate of 8pc every year. Already UK renewable energy firms are preparing to compete for a share of the funding pot in what could prove a crucial test of the sector’s ability to export worldleading technology and skills. The challenge is whether the UK developers can reduce their cost to match the prices of international players Solar developers including Light source Energy, RES and Solar Century are expected to be first in line for a multimillion dollar Saudi windfall, and the Telegraph understands that a raft of energy storage, engineering and software firms are also preparing to take part in
the tender. Emma Pinchbeck, executive director of RenewableUK, said the industry is ready to take advantage of the Saudi deal as part of its wider drive to tap the $290bn global renewables market. “British companies are moving as fast as they can to seek out contracts wherever they can internationally, and capturing economic value for the UK. This Saudi opportunity is just the latest.” “In Saudi Arabia, for example, we already have members offering services as broad as delivering energy storage projects or supporting with land surveys,” she added. ScottishPower boss Keith Anderson urged the sector’s supply chain to vy for contracts too, saying: “The UK renewable sector supply chain has a fantastic wealth of talent and experience and should now consider the opportunities in Saudi
Arabia.” But the UK industry will need to prove that it can reduce costs to keep pace with the plummeting cost of renewable energy technologies globally. UK solar companies are racing to drive costs to below recent international tenders for solar projects which have been awarded at £25 a megawatt compared to UK auction prices closer to £75 a megawatt, said Ilesh Patel, a partner with Baringa Partners. “The challenge is whether the UK developers can reduce their cost to match the prices of international players. “I’m pretty optimistic that the best developers will be able to, especially if they move into joint ventures with complementary companies. They absolutely have something to offer but they have a lot of hard work still to do to reduce costs,” he added.

El combate de lucha libre
There was to be a grand wrestling match in Alqueria. A combatant from each of the barrios would contend for the title of Alquerian All Comers Champion. To organise such an event in a town with a potent barrio divide and intolerant hatred for the opposing faction may seem like a well-planned disaster waiting to happen. The powers that be thought it would allow barrio rivalry to be confined to the ring and away from the streets. The naïve fools. The Alquerian weapons of choice tended to be cobblestones, bricks, bottles and fire-bombs. Hand to hand combat was considered too dangerous so outside wrestlers had to be recruited. Only the meanest and fittest fighters were head-hunted by the respective barrios. They were given Alquerian citizenship, something which can be purchased reasonably cheaply and briefed in the ways of the Pueblo. Manuela took an active part in the selection of the Hill People’s champion. She spent quite a time interviewing each personally. She was very thorough and enthusiastic in her singular selection technique. Santiago ‘Spleen Ripper’ Gonzales was to represent the Hill People while Ángel ‘Granny Masher’ Tierno was the chosen one of the Newcomers. Both wrestlers left a grisly reputation of broken limbs and chewed ears in their wake. Loco Paco regarded the
two fighters with an academic interest and threw morsels of food to them. It wasn’t until he heard them speak that he realised they weren’t some exotic variety of hairless Ouran-Utang but human. Paco was rightly disappointed and turned his attention once more to his imaginary rodent friend, Bert. Come the day of the contest and the Town’s Plaza was packed with what seems like the entire population of Alqueria. The square was regaled in garlands and bunting. The wrestling ring stands ready and the crowd have already started exchanging jibes and insults. Enter the protagonists, lumbering, knuckles scraping the flagstones. The crowd goes wild. Things more tangible than insults are now thrown, a number of supporters are felled by well-aimed projectiles. The ring was torn apart and its planking used as weapons. All in all it was a well-planned disaster that had an inevitability Nostradamus would have found easy meat. The two wrestlers took refuge in the Bar la Casa Devante where they discovered they were once close friends. They had shared the same room while on an advanced grunting course organised by the World Wrestling Council. They sat chatting while bedlam reigned outside. The irony of the situation seemed somehow quite normal in Alqueria.
Size Matters
The last firewood we ordered turned out to be gigantic misshapen monsters that came in an enormous lorry driven by a small but ebullient Spaniard, and was sufficient for four winters. Each year since he has appeared at our gate in the forlorn hope that we have somehow managed to burn it all up and so will need some more. Last January he once more graced our gate. I took him to the woodshed and showed him our diminished pile of slumbering timber trolls. ‘We have enough for this winter. We don’t want any more before March.’ I told him. He took this sad news as cheerfully as ever. ‘March.’ He said. ‘March.’ I repeated. On the first of March there he was! ‘You want firewood.’ His tone was midway between question and statement. ‘Yes,’ I answered. ‘But we don’t want a big lorry like last time.’ ‘Vale, I’ll bring a small lorry.’ I pressed home my advantage. ‘And we don’t want big logs. We want little logs.’ ‘You can have little logs.’ He beamed. I felt I needed to emphasise the point. ‘We want a little lorry of little logs.’ ‘You want a little lorry, or little logs?’ Maybe I hadn’t been clear enough. ‘No, a little lorry of little logs.’ ‘You can have a little lorry, or little logs.’ Time to explain again. ‘We want a little lorry. We want little logs.
By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com
We want a little lorry of little logs.’ Obviously, I thought my Spanish was letting me down. ‘No, you can’t have that.’ ‘Why not?’ ‘You can have a little lorry with big logs, or a big lorry with little logs.’ ‘But we want a little lorry. Full of little logs. We don’t want a big lorry, or big logs.’ He shrugged his shoulders, maintaining the bonhomie of one who has lost sixpence and found a shilling. ‘You can have a little lorry of big logs, or a big lorry of little logs.’ ‘But we want…’ I could see I was getting nowhere neared a solution, but a lot nearer confusion, so I changed tack. ‘Why?’ ‘Because the little logs are on the big lorry, and the big logs are on the little lorry.’ I suppose that did make sense. I pondered. Big lorry, little logs. Little lorry, big logs; Which was the less inconvenient? He watched me, like a cheerful Christmas robin who had just spied a juicy worm.

Keep the skin on the
avocados and cut them in half. Take out the stone and cut them into quarters, put them into a bowl, and sprinkle with the lime zest and juice. Toss well to coat. Roughly chop the green chilli, add to the bowl with a pinch of chilli powder/chipotle and toss gently. Put the breadcrumbs on a plate and roll the avocados in them. Put on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and bake at 180C/350F/gas mark 4 for 25 minutes. Alternatively, shallowfry them in a good bit of olive oil. Put a griddle on a high heat. While it heats, thinly shred the cabbage and roughly chop the coriander, then combine in a bowl. Chop the chilli and add to the bowl with the lime and a good pinch of salt, then mix until well combined. Pile into a serving bowl. Char the tomatoes, spring
onions and chillies on the griddle until soft and blackened all over, turning with tongs every 30 seconds or so. Once the whole lot looks good, put it into a blender with the garlic, a good swig of red wine vinegar and a generous pinch of salt and blitz until you have a punchy salsa. Taste and check it is nicely balanced: add more vinegar, lime or a little agave syrup or honey if it needs sweetness. Warm the tortillas in a dry frying pan on a medium heat or over an open flame, turning with tongs. Once they are warm and a little charred around the edges, pile them on to a plate. Put them in the middle of the table with the avocado, salsa, slaw, cheese, and some extra chilli and limes for squeezing over, and let everyone make their own tacos. Serves 4.

Dairy-Free Banana Cupcakes Ingredients 200g self-raising flour, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder, 50g caster sugar, 2 bananas (mashed) 100ml orange juice (smooth), 100ml sunflower oil, 1tsp vanilla extract, Soya milk, Dash of cider vinegar. Method Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl and stir in the sugar. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients. Combine the orange juice, sunflower oil and vanilla extract in a jug. Pour the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients and fold in the mashed bananas. You are looking for the mixture to be of a dropping consistency, add a little soya milk if you need to.
Add a dash of cider vinegar, which will cause a little reaction, making the cupcakes lovely and fluffy. Spoon the mixture into 12 cupcake cases and bake for 10-15 minutes in an oven preheated to 190°C. Top with vanilla buttercream and enjoy!

Having fun in the Maldives The Maldives is unusual as a holiday destination because of the fun things to do whether you are staying on a plush resort, in Male’, or in a simple guesthouse on an island in a faraway atoll. Entertainment and daily excursions are organised at every resort so don’t be shy about joining in. Excursions will include fishing and cruising (to watch dolphins dance) as well as visits to the capital, Male’, and to genuinely deserted islands, perhaps for swimming and a picnic, and shopping expeditions to neighbouring inhabited islands. If you stay in a guesthouse on an inhabited island, you will have the chance to meet Maldivians, experience local culture and cuisine, and join in what the islanders do for relaxation, such as playing football in the late afternoon or relaxing over a soft drink and eating in a seaside café. You will be able to organise fun activities for yourself, like going on a Dhoni, to try your hand at line fishing, or swim in crystal clear lagoons watching marine life through a snorkel. A must visit is to the restaurant Ithaa, at 5 meters below sea level, it offers unparalleled 180-degree views of marine life, while enjoying your food.

Cruise Guide
Discover Maldives
The Colourful Side
Turquoise waters
It is estimated that nearly half the guests on holiday in the Maldives arrive with the intention of snorkelling or diving or, as soon as they see the crystal clear waters of an island’s lagoon and the colourful fish and corals, can’t resist giving it a try. Snorkelling is open to everyone who can swim and even children as young as ten can learn how to scuba dive. It’s easy in the Maldives.
Snorkelling: Resort dive centres run courses to help the beginner learn how to snorkel and the instructors will advise on where best to observe the colourful world underwater. To avoid sunburn while gently floating in the lagoon, wearing a T-shirt is advisable and even if you are a strong swimmer it is better to wear a life jacket when snorkelling far from the shore, as currents can carry away the unwary. Beginners at snorkelling should practise to gain confidence in shallow lagoons first and will find it remarkable how many fascinating fish are to be seen close to the beach in less than a metre of water. Reef edges are simply stunning for fish and glowing corals, so resorts with a house reef close to the shore are great for beginners. The Maldives is home to 21 species of whale and dolphin and they are frequently sighted as they cross in the channels from one side of an atoll to another. They are sometimes spotted during the crossing from the airport to Male’. Many resorts organise cruises to the sea-lanes that dolphins regularly use, and independent dolphin watching cruises by Dhoni can be arranged by the accommodation provider. Operating out of Male’ (bookings can be coordinated through your resort) the whale submarine is a chance for young and old to visit the underwater world without getting wet, while enjoying the exciting experience of diving in a real submarine. The cabin of the submarine is fully air-conditioned and has a normal atmospheric pressure so passengers breathe normal air. The whale submarine has safety features to ensure the safest, most comfortable ride, and is operated by a fully trained and certified team of pilots. On most dives passengers can see schools of blue or yellow-striped snappers and common lionfish, yellow box fish and sometimes turtles. Depending on the time of the day, current and many other factors, the submarine may dive to some historical sites such as a shipwreck or exciting places like shark feeding areas.

2017 Porsche 718 The cars are getting new suspension, brakes, styling tweaks, and dropping Boxster Improved, but is six-cylinder engines for four. it a better sports car?
It’s subtle, but it’s there. Listen carefully when chugging along at low speed in Porsche’s new flat-four-powered 718 Boxster and you’ll recognize what you hear. Sure, it’s damped by water jackets and a turbo, distinctly lacking mechanical clatter and subdued by decades of internal-combustion progress, but there’s no denying the fundamental thrum of the thing. Under it all is the undeniable lope of an air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. As before, Porsche’s new 718 Boxster initially comes in only two versions: the 300-horsepower base model and the 350-horsepower S. Either can be had with
a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dualclutch (PDK) automatic transmission. Fifty horsepower is no pittance, but the difference between the base and S-model 718 Boxsters is nothing relative to the vast chasm that separates them, experientially, from their predecessors. The 718’s turbocharged flat-four powerplants, displacing 2.0 and 2.5 litres, respectively, are the headlining changes. Both yield 35 more horsepower than the 2.7and 3.4-litre naturally aspirated flat-sixes they replace. Torque is the big story, however, increasing by 74 lb-ft on the base car and 43 lb-ft on the S.
