Scottish leader softens stance on possible independence vote timing

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Sunday softened her stance on the potential timing of a second independence referendum after Prime Minister Theresa May rejected her call to hold a vote before Britain leaves the European Union. Sturgeon had called for a referendum to be held between autumn 2018 and spring 2019 but after May said “now is not the time”, the Scottish leader said she could be prepared to hold a vote later as long as it was not too long after Brexit. “It is for (May) then to say what timescale she thinks would be appropriate and then yes I am happy to have that discussion within reason,” Sturgeon said during an interview with ITV. Asked if a vote in 2021 would be reasonable, Sturgeon said it would not because too much time would have lapsed after Britain’s EU exit, due in late March 2019, and there could have been too much divergence in areas such as regulations. “Then gets much harder for Scotland to seek a different course. But if she is talking in the spring of 2019, a bit later perhaps than I was suggesting then there may be some room for discussion around that,” she said. Sturgeon’s comments came as a Panelbase poll for the Sunday Times, carried out since her announcement that she would seek a fresh referendum, put support for independence at 44 percent, while 56 percent backed staying in the United

Kingdom. It also found 51 percent of Scots did not want a vote on independence within the next few years. Ruth Davidson, the leader of May’s Conservative Party in Scotland, said any vote could not take place until “after the Brexit process has played out” so that the Scottish people know what choice they face. “I don’t think you can have an independence referendum again if you don’t have public consent for it and the people of Scotland don’t want this,” she told the BBC TV. “The SNP is not Scotland and they are acting against the majority wishes of the people of Scotland.” Scots rejected independence by 55-45 percent in a referendum in September 2014. But majority of Scots voted in favour of Britain staying in the EU in June. In a separate interview with Sky News, Sturgeon said her party was currently looking into the currency options for an independent Scotland but “the starting point of our consideration” would be that it continues to use sterling. Earlier this week her predecessor, Alex Salmond, told the Financial Times that Scotland could abandon a currency union with the rest of the United Kingdom. “We will set out a very clear proposition but I think it is right ... that we do very serious work before we come to putting that proposition forward,” Sturgeon said.

Airport shooting rekindles security debate ahead of French election

the largest selection of second-hand goods in the area Police on Sunday questioned relatives of a man shot dead by soldiers at a Paris airport as they sought clues about why he tried to seize an assault rifle in an incident that has pushed security to the top of France’s election campaign. Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said late on Saturday that the man, named as 39-year-old Ziyed Ben Belgacem, had shouted he was there to “die for Allah” when he tried to seize the gun from a woman air force member on patrol at Orly airport. After throwing down a bag containing a can of petrol and putting an air pistol to the head of the soldier, he was shot three times by her colleagues. More than 230 people have died in France in the past two years at the hands of attackers allied to the militant Islamist group Islamic State. These include coordinated bombings and shootings in November 2015 in Paris when 130 people were killed and scores injured. With the country in the throes of a highly charged election campaign

before a two-round presidential election in April and May, the attacks fuelled the political debate about security. Belgacem, who had been in and out of prison for theft and drug offences according to judicial sources, was already on the authorities’ radar. They said he became a radicalised Muslim when he served a prison term several years ago for drug trafficking. He had been reporting regularly to police under the terms of a provisional release from custody for theft and he did not have the right to leave the country. Several hours earlier before he was killed, Belgacem had shot and wounded a police officer with his air pistol after a routine traffic stop north of Paris before fleeing, officials said. Later he entered a bar in Vitry-surSeine on the other side of Paris and opened fire with his air gun without hitting anyone. He also stole a car before arriving at the airport.

The New Bridge Part one

Matas eased himself back into the cave. His midnight sortie into Alqueria had been successful. He had ‘liberated’ a cask of Remitroot liquor a small barrel of olives and a copy of ‘Maxim en Español’. Matas still lurked in his cave overlooking the village. Believing the Civil War still to be on he did what he could for the Republic with his limited resources. Buoyed by a belief in his cause and half a cask of Remitroot liquor he foraged through his meagre arsenal of weapons. After discarding some corroding cartridges, a collection of highly unstable pyrotechnics he came across an innocuous looking brown canvas parcel. Cleaning the accumulated dirt of decades from the package he examined the label. ‘Demolition block-D7. RDX. TNT’. Further rummaging brought to light a detonator, a reel of wire and an old but functional car battery. He had all the prerequisites for making a nuisance of himself and wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass. Waiting until nightfall our erstwhile commando slipped down the easy slope from his cave and into the Río Verde. Up to his waist in the stinking green water he made for the bridge leading from the Huella Vieja, the northerly route into Alqueria. He forced the explosive between the stonework of the structure and ran the wire back to the entrance of his cave. Rodriquez was in jovial mood. He was returning from Alicante where he had just

collected his new gleaming white Mercedes S-Class Roadster. He decided to take the northerly route into Alqueria. The bridge was narrow and he made a mental note to drive carefully he didn’t want to scratch his new machine. Matas touched the bare wires to the battery terminals. The explosion wasn’t overly loud nor was it overly dramatic. A lot of smoke and debris and the bridge had no centre. He thought he heard a scream and wondered what the white object was disappearing into the river. Matas danced around the living chamber of his cave in a state of high glee. Around and around he danced before the combination of over exuberance and over indulgence in the juice of the Remitroot caused him to collapse in an untidy pile on the dirt floor. The sight of a white Mercedes floating down river with an obese mill owner leaping about in a blind rage on its roof attracted little attention. This is Alqueria after all. Rodriquez shouted for a line to be thrown. Blythe Gruntmore, the only one in earshot was confused. His bad Spanish had construed the shouted request as something to-do with Rodriquez’s loins. Blythe had suspicions about Rodriquez’s loins for some time and pretended not to hear. Rodriquez and his Mercedes drifted down river and into the Mediterranean. He was detained by the Servicio Marítimo de la Guardia Civil as an illegal immigrant. Alqueria needed a new bridge.

Elliot’s Lucky Escape

Henry the car had received permission from the Insurance God to go and have his broken shoulder mended. Arrangements were made in Spanish with the Spanish Chica, and at the appointed hour we took him to the designated Car Hospital, and booked him in for surgery. We left with his substitute, a tiny blob of a car named Basix, and the promise that the garage would ring when Henrywas restored to full physical health. Although I enjoyed myself hurtling around the countryside in my mechanical flea, Pete was housebound - there was no way he could scramble into or out of Basix’s miniscule interior. We hoped to have Henry back by Friday, ready for the weekly Mercadona experience on Saturday, but Friday progressed from morning to afternoon, and from afternoon to evening with no communication regarding Henry’s discharge. Pete, confined to the house for the best part of the week, was going stir crazy, and I was not looking forward to unpacking my trolley, paying, repacking the trolley and stashing the accumulated goodies into Basix’s hidey hole of a boot all on my own. We had almost given up hope of Henry-filled weekend when the phone rang. ‘Hello Jos’ the phone said. I was taken aback, and probably said something intelligent, like ‘Eh?’ I thought ‘I know that voice, but why is he ringing me? I want to speak to the Chica about my car, not sundry young men with whom I have no

By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com

connection.’ ‘I’m phoning from the garage about your car. It’s Elliot, and the car is ready for you right now.’ Aah! now I understand! While I was still re-organising my mental processes I came out with another super-intelligent remark. ‘Oh.’ Having comprehended the full meaning of the sentence I followed it up with ‘Right. Thanks. I’ll be along within the hour.’ I clicked the phone off. ‘That was Elliot,’ I informed Pete. ‘He says Henry is ready, and we can have him now, so I’m off to get him.’ Pete breathed an audible sigh of relief. ‘Oh good! Give him a kiss from me, will you?’ I was startled. I am not in the habit of spontaneously kissing unsuspecting young men, not even good-looking ones, and neither is Pete. ‘What, Elliot?’ I queried. ‘No, Henry.’ He replied. Elliot has no idea what a lucky escape he had that day! And, just for the record, I’m not in the habit of kissing cars, either!

The Independent Theatre Group Out in Front Again with “Lilies on the Land”

A

fter a long break, The Independent Theatre Group is returning with a beautiful play, “Lilies on the Land” and once again we have the pleasure of introducing a new member to the Almanzora Valley stages as well our loyal and well-loved members who many have seen before in our previous productions. “Lilies on the Land” is based on one hundred and fifty letters and interviews with original Land Girls, and is a revealing, funny and wonderfully moving portrait of some of Britain’s pluckiest unsung heroes, charting the personal journeys of four women who sign up to join the Women’s Land Army during World War II determined to work endless hours on farms across the country in a bid to “do their bit” for the War Effort. The play describes how these young women from totally different backgrounds, torn from their families and bereft of all the basic comforts of home, dealt with the hardship of farming life and the pressures of the War. Maybe work clothes full of mice and toilet rolls falling from the sky are just what it needs for these girls to get through? Representing these land girls we have Sally Miller, new to Independent Theatre but well known for her recent part in “The Lady in the Van”; Marie Fletcher Carolan, on the stage for the first time since her superb performance as Shirley Valentine, Ella Dring, well known to theatre audiences, having appeared in numerous ITG productions including “Steel Magnolias” and as the Queen of the Fairies in “Mother Goose” and finally Beverley Michael

who was also in our production of “Steel Magnolias” but probably best known for her superb performance as Geraldine – “The Vicar of Dibley” Linda Hands the multi-talented stage manager for The Incognito Singers, has been persuaded to re-visit one of her other skills and join forces, with The Independent Theatre Group to direct this production. Linda is no stranger to stage direction having previously directed the critically acclaimed “Quartet”. The play will be performed at El Teatro Saavedra in Cantoria on 24th and 25th March and again in El Teatro Municipal in Zurgena on 1st and 2nd April. • Tickets are €7.50 and are available from • Total Entertainment, in Albox and Arboleas • 1 Stop Pools in Albox • By email via itgboxoffice@gmail.com • Or simply pay on the door We are always on the look out for people who would like to join us and enjoy the fun and good natured banter of Amateur Dramatics. Please don’t think you have to go on stage – there are always as many, if not more involved back stage and front of house as actually “treading the boards”. Finally, one or two of our supporters are holding tickets for “Caught in the Net” which has been postponed indefinitely due to casting problems. These tickets can be used for this play “Lilies on the Land”, just present them at the door and they will be honoured.

Wonderful Mother

God made a wonderful mother, A mother who never grows old; He made her smile of the sunshine, And He moulded her heart of pure gold; In her eyes He placed bright shining stars, In her cheeks fair roses you see; God made a wonderful mother, And He gave that dear mother to me. Pat O’Reilly

Mother’s Love Her love is like an island in life’s ocean, vast and wide A peaceful, quiet shelter From the wind, the rain, the tide. ‘Tis bound on the north by Hope, By Patience on the West, By tender Counsel on the South And on the East by Rest. How to find the right yoga class yoga instructor Adam Hustler. “We spend most of our lives sitting hunched over our phones, computers and bikes and yoga helps correct this both mentally and physically.” Yoga instructor Niki Perry, who counts Kate Winslet as a regular agrees, “Yoga strengthens your core and improves your balance, which helps straighten your posture and boost your confidence.” What are the different types of yoga - and which is best for you? Hatha yoga Traditionally ‘hatha’ is the word for yoga, but in the past few years hatha classes have cropped up. In most cases hatha classes tend to On Par le Franca is

be gentler sessions, ideal for beginners. Astanga yoga This is a more athletic style of yoga and is more physically demanding. Each pose is held for five breaths and ends in a sun salutation, so if you’re not keen on downward dogs and planks this might be one to skip. Vinyasa yoga If you want to recharge, but also feel like you’ve worked out then a vinyasa flow yoga class is a great option. The instructor goes through a series of poses that flow together. It bridges the gap between hatha and astanga styles.

Yoga has always had a reputation for being a softer form of exercise, but in recent years it’s had a revival. Not least because several studies have revealed its endless health benefits, including a recent one in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health, which found that it can be more effective for weight loss than resistance training. In 2013 the same journal reported that doing 20 minutes of hatha yoga regularly can boost your brain power. “A yoga practice can be as much about strength as flexibility; you’re not just looking to get bendier, but to move with control,” says

Will Certain Vitamins Give You Better Skin?

There is some research suggesting that taking vitamins A, C, and E in supplement form may have skin-saving benefits. They’re all antioxidants that may prevent or delay

some types of skin cell damage. But unless you’re deficient in any of these vitamins, you can get what you need from a well-balanced diet that includes fruit, vegetables, nuts, dairy,

and fish. (In fact, excessive amounts of vitamins A and E, particularly from supplements, might even be dangerous.) Also, there’s more solid research on the

risk of doing so. Somehow we aren’t good at self-regulating what we eat. We copy others. What we should do is concentrate on ourselves a bit more. If eating out, see the menu online before and plan your meal. Don’t just opt for what “she is having”. Better still, do as dietician Aisling Pigott says: “We forget to value and enjoy food. Don’t restrict and binge. Listen to your body’s needs.” So ignore what others are eating.

Does eating alone help you diet?

We seem to be compelled to model how we eat on those around us; not only on what they eat but on how big they are. A study in the journal Appetite showed that in the presence of an actor in a convincing fat suit, people in a restaurant ate 31.6% more pasta, whatever she ordered. If she ordered salad, they served themselves 43.5% less salad. Another study, in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that if a close friend became obese, his or her pal had a 171% increased

benefits of applying these vitamins topically, and they can be found in a variety of skin-care products. You may be curious about collagen supplements, which are often touted to help reduce the depth of wrinkles and restore the structure of the skin. Research on safety and efficacy is still in the early stages, but some reports look promising. As always, check with your doctor before adding supplements to your regimen. Many of them can have unwanted side effects or drug interactions. Your MD can help determine if a specific supplement (even a vitamin) is appropriate for you.

Sales@soltimes.com 950 121 936 The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galraith

“Her head had bled a little into the snow. The face was crushed and swollen, one eye reduced to a pucker, the other showing as a sliver of dull white distended lids.” A dramatic opening, the death of a beautiful supermodel in suspicious circumstances, having fallen from her Mayfair penthouse caused a big stir with the paparazzi. Detective Inspector Roy Carver and Detective Sergeant Eric Wardle were on the case. Lula Landy, like the late Princess Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world. It seems that both women were hounded to death by the pressure of celebrity and attention. Her death dominated the news showing her “flawless face, her lithe and sculpted body” but within three months “The frenzy wore itself into staleness.” Lula was an interesting character, having been adopted by a wealthy white family. She had been investigating her biological roots and had discovered a black half-brother who she had made contact with. She was expelled from school for dabbling in drugs and ran off to London to live rough with addicts. Her on-off boyfriend was an addict, violent at times, a musician called Evan Duffield and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She had been signed up by Guy Some the fashion designer after winning a modelling contract worth 5 million pounds over 2 years. When she died she had accumulated a fortune of 10 million. Before her death there had been a row with Duffield and he became chief suspect but at this stage, the conclusion amounted to: “The poor cow jumped. There was no one else there.” No further investigation. Three months later we meet her adopted half-brother, John Bristow, a lawyer for Landry, May and Patterson. He chooses Cordoran Strike , Private Detective with an equally interesting past who is down on his luck. His military career came to an abrupt end with a serious injury when he lost part of his leg. His long term girlfriend and his turbulent relationship with Charlotte has finally floundered and he has nowhere

Special Offers Visit:

to sleep other than his office in Denmark Street. His finances have hit rock-bottom and he has acquired a temp called Robin, intelligent and down-to-earth who he cannot afford without any paying clients. Bristow seems to be the lifeline that Strike desperately needs. He chose Strike to reopen the case of Lula because of his connection with Charlie who was John’s adopted brother who died when he was 9 years of age. Strike and Charlie had been bosom friends for two months prior to Charlie’s fatal accident. “They say my sister killed herself. I don’t believe it.” Strike is initially sceptical and reluctant to take on the case having decided that the police investigation was thorough and he believed the final verdict of suicide. But he is interested to hear evidence from a neighbour, Tansy Bestigui who overheard a heated argument seconds before Lula died. She was convinced that Lula was pushed over her balcony. The police had dismissed her evidence because she had been taking cocaine. Strike takes on the case and he is offered twice the going rate which will partly solve his mountainous debts. A string of interviews with all of the characters who had had contact with Lula make it compelling reading and the suspense is kept ticking over until the finale which is likened to an Agatha Christie climax when the murderer is revealed, and all the facts of the case spilled out in thorough detail. Cormoran Strike comes out of this very well. He outwitted the police force and deserves our uttermost respect. By the end of the case his reputation has spread and he has clients coming to his dingy office. Things are looking up. You’ll have guessed by now that J.K. Rowling was the author. When she sent her manuscript anonymously to Orion Books it was rejected. The sequel was published recently: “The Silkworm” which I am sure will be as successful. Rowling is certainly a master storyteller and I loved it. Publisher: Sphere. ISBN: 978-0-7515-4925-6

Launch it, and everything comes to a screeching halt as iT consumes all your resources just to play some music. Not only that, but year after year, it seems iTunes’ interface gets worse, confusing even the most knowledgeable of computer users. Don’t worry, you’re in luck. Windows has more great music programs than you can shake a stick at, many of which are more powerful than iTunes anyway. Here are a couple of alternatives. MusicBee: is the jack of all trades of the Windows music world. It does a lot of things well, and it does them all for free. Other players

may excel more in certain areas, but MusicBee aims to please everyone. Up to today, I’ve never heard of it but is does seem to do what it says on the tin! It can synchronise music to Android phones and other noniOS devices, and convert tracks onthe-fly if they aren’t compatible with your player. MediaMonkey is arguably more o f a true iTunes replacement. W h y ? Because MediaMonkey is one of the only music players t h a t can sync your music to iOS devices, including iPhones and iPads. (You still need iTunes installed, but you never have to open it as is just needs the drivers that come with it.). So what does it do? EVERYTHING that iTunes does, just a great deal better. It does have one main disadvantage as its more advanced features (like smart playlists, automatic organisation, or on-the-fly conversion while syncing) require a paid licence! This currently is $25, to not extortionate. There are more iTunes alternatives than these, for example “AIMP”, “Clementine”, “VLC”, and even the ‘I’m-not-dead-yet’ “Winamp” are still solid choices for many. So until next time happy hunting and music playing.

John Surtees, one of the great British sportsmen of all-time, died earlier this month, aged 83. The only man to win F1 and MotoGP World titles, he was a legend and superstar, a man who kept pushing himself until the very end. Born in Tatsfield, Surrey on 11 February, 1934, the son of a motorbike dealer and former sidecar champion, John started riding at the age 15. His progress was rapid and he won his first race in 1951, becoming MotoGP World champion five years later. The first rider to shift his weight around on the saddle to gain better momentum when cornering, he switched to F1 1960, having added three more 500cc titles to his list of triumphs which also included three in the 350cc class. And he was the first man to win three successive senior TT races on the Isle of Man: 1958-60. John rode in 348 motorcycle races, winning 255, including 38 Grand Prixs. He had 49 podium finishes and registered 14 fastest laps. After his two wheel exploits, John quickly made an impact on four, finishing second in the British F1 Grand Prix in his debut season in his Lotus. In 1964, a year after switching the Bowmaker-Yeoman team to Ferrari,

he won the driver’s championship, clinching the title in the very last race in Mexico when he held off late challenges from Graham Hill and Jim Clark. After finishing runner-up to Jack Brabham in 1966, John quit the Italian team… tired of political infighting. He launched his own team in 1970 but retired from racing two years later, having won six of his 111 F1 races. He also had 24 podium finishes, also drove Lola, Honda, BRM and McLaren cars and competed in the Le Mans 24hour race on four occasions, finishing third in 1964. Unfortunately his team - Surtees Racing Organisation - folded in 1978 but John remained involved in the sport and in 2009 saw his son, Henry, tragically killed in a freak accident at Brands Hatch. John, who drove cars and rode bikes until he was 82, was awarded the CBE in 2008. “Scandalous; he should have been knighted without a shadow of doubt” said his colleagues. An Ambassador for the Racing Steps Foundation, John continued to work enthusiastically right up until his death in a Tooting hospital, and two of his ventures, The Henry Surtees Foundation and the Buckmore Park Kart Circuit, are thriving. ‘JS’ was a true sportsman, a kind, loving man. R.I.P.

Landscape Lighting Ideas

We often don’t get a chance to see our homes until after dark. Soft lighting in a dark outdoor environment is nothing short of magic. It provides a warm, inviting ambiance that beckons us outdoors. It creates mood, romance, and drama. It adds interest and intrigue to any setting. A growing number of homeowners are capturing this magic in their gardens through “nightscaping,” one of the hottest trends in outdoor home improvement today. Lighting can be one of the most important aspects of landscape and hardscape design, yet it is often overlooked or underdone. Proper outdoor lighting design allows you to highlight focal points and hide eyesores. It can also be used to enhance safety and security, to accent special trees or plantings, and to create a festive atmosphere

accent the architecture of the home rather than the trees or walkways or patio areas. Home lighting gives you the chance to highlight architectural features like pillars or columns, or enjoy the shadow play of lights on the craggy surface of stone veneer. “When you have a beautiful home, sometimes it’s more effective to light the architecture than the trees,” says TJ Wilcoxson of Alexon Design Group. You can also pull features off the architecture and bring them into the landscape so the home and landscape feel integrated. “We’ll sometimes create a pillar using the same stone veneer as the home, and match the fixture on the pillar to the ones on the home,” says Barton. It is professional tips like this that will help you learn about landscape lighting and make informed decisions.

Inheritance tax has been reduced

Question: Is it true that inheritance tax has been reduced in Andalucía? Answer: Yes it is true, and the new exemptions are valid for deaths after the 1st of January of 2017. Exemptions have been increased for group I and II heirs (spouse and descendants). They have increased for spouse and descendants from 175,000€ to 250,000€. Just as important is that, unlike the old system where if you received one euro more than 175,000€ you would only be entitled to 16,000€ exemption (in other words basically no exempt amount ), under the new system you do not lose the exemption completely if the inheritance is over 250,000€. What happens is that they allow you an exemption of the first 200,000€ and then charge you on the difference. But be very careful, if a descendent or wife receives one euro more than 350,000€ then you will lose your right to the exemption completely. Conclusion for tax planning: Each beneficiary (spouse or descendent) must not receive more than 350,000€. All of the above only applies to spouse and descendants. All other beneficiaries get a much worse tax deal. Exemptions for inheritance of family home and family businesses have also been increased. Michael Davies. Abogado. MUNDI ABOGADOS SOLICITORS

We are a multidisciplinary law firm based in Vera (Almería) and as such we deal with many different aspects of law, specialising in litigation, conveyancing, taxation, civil, commercial and fiscal law. Our aim is to provide a personal, quality service, in plain English and to do so promptly, efficiently and in a friendly manner. We will keep you up to date and fully informed throughout and all at a very competitive price. We can also arrange the following if needed: • Open a Spanish bank account • Connection of utility services • If you are considering renting your house or land we will negotiate your letting agreement, ensuring that the terms of your contract meet your requirements • Write your Spanish will • As your Fiscal Representatives, we will assist you in any dealings with Spanish Tax Office and explain to you all the taxes that you are liable to pay. For those that become residents of Spain, we can also assist in other legal matters, such as matrimonial issues or business contracts.

FINANCING A HOME If not, you will need to consider your borrowing options. You won’t be able to take a mortgage from a UK bank to pay for a home that lies on different soil but many Brits use local Spanish banks which are accustomed to foreign buyers and more than happy to deal with them. Mortgage terms in Spain typically span between 15 and 30 years depending on your age, against a maximum loan of around 70% of the property value. Although lending in Spain is more stringent since the recession, if you present a sound credit history and solid proof of ability to repay the loan it should be a relatively simply process. It’s worth noting that practically all Spanish loans are repayment only. An ‘interest only’ loan is rare and usually attached to the sale of the bank’s own repossessed property to make it more appealing. Most well-known Spanish banks employ multilingual staff but if you prefer not to negotiate direct, consider using an Englishspeaking overseas broker to seek out the best deal on your behalf. Bear in mind also that it is good practice to borrow in the same currency you will repay the loan in. This avoids currency fluctuations moving against you. For example, if you are paying your mortgage with a UK salary, borrow in sterling.

U.S. technology companies have faced tight scrutiny in Europe for the way they do business, from privacy to how quickly they remove illegal or threatening content. The Commission and European consumer protection authorities will “take action to make sure social media companies comply with EU consumer rules,” the official said. The authorities and the Commission sent letters to the companies in December saying that some of their service terms broke EU consumer protection law and that they needed to do more to tackle fraud and scams on their websites. The companies proposed some ways to resolve the issues and discussed them with the authorities and the Commission on Thursday, a source familiar with the matter said, adding that the meeting was constructive. Enchanting Spain - out now

From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. Enchanting Spain is a portrait in words and images of both the familiar and the unexpected pleasures of this vibrant country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John MacDonald has written for many Spanish and international publications and has a special interest in Spanish history. He studied journalism, photography and archaeology at the University of Exeter and UCL. He shares his time between the UK and Spain. Patricia Díaz Pereda studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, and has worked as a television director and for a media publication. She is passionate about her homeland and has written many articles for magazines as well as contributing to Descubrir España, a National Geographic publication on the subject. She lives in Madrid. pause for thought

As many will, I’m sure be aware, we’re now in the season of Lent, when Christians traditionally review their lives and priorities as we remember the 40-day period Jesus spent alone preparing for his ministry, when, we’re told, he was tempted by the Devil. I always find it particularly fascinating that each temptation was prefaced with the word ‘IF’. Such a dangerous word when used cleverly, sowing seeds of doubt; it’s one of the most common strategies of Satan in undermining faith. Time and again, in that story, Satan questioned the person of Jesus – was he really divine? Did he really know what he was doing? And why not take the easy option? And how often in our lives does Satan similarly try to question our faith? And more often than not, it’s in a spirit of contempt, making it all the harder to resist. And so we’re asked questions like “You don’t really believe all that religious nonsense do you?” or “What’s the point of going to Church?” So I suggest that during this Lent, we take encouragement from the story of Jesus being tempted, and like him, confront such temptations as we may face, refusing to be cowed into doubting the intelligence of our faith. But just as Jesus rebutted Satan by quoting scripture, so can we gain similar strength from recalling the

words St Paul wrote to the Church in Corinth – a place where they thought themselves supremely clever “God has made the wisdom of this world to look foolish. For you can’t discover God by clever reasoning, because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” What an important concept that is. If the human mind could comprehend God, then He’d just be superhuman, not divine. We couldn’t fully understand God’s logic, so only the foolish would try. The fact that our faith defies human logic is itself evidence for the validity of that faith, so take courage and be proud of this divinely logical faith! Great Food & Drink

B

reakfast and brunch are among my favourite meals, and equally delicious in all their forms, whether sweet, savoury, salty, healthy, fried, poached or baked. They have the advantage that the rest of the day stretches ahead, so even if you eat a little too much, you can still recover by bedtime. 3 large leeks, 40g butter, 25g tahini, 1 small garlic clove, peeled and crushed. The juice of 1 lemon, 1 heaped tbsp chipotle in adobo, finely chopped. 75g natural yoghurt, 2 poached eggs per person, to serve 2-4 slices sourdough or rye bread. Olive oil, Za’atar, to serve. Top and tail the leeks, then peel off and discard the outer

layer. Cut the leeks in half lengthways, wash under cold running water, drain and cut into finger-width rounds. Put a large, heavy-based frying pan on a high heat and, after a few minutes, add the butter. When it is melted and sizzling, add the leeks, turn down the heat to medium, season generously, and sauté for five to 10 minutes, stirring from time to time, until collapsed and soft. Meanwhile, put the tahini, garlic and half the lemon juice in a small bowl with the chipotle, and beat with a fork until smooth. Stir in the yoghurt, taste and season; add more lemon juice if it needs brightening. Poach the eggs and toast the bread, drizzling it with a little olive oil afterwards. Top the toast with the leeks, eggs and a sprinkling of za’atar, and eat with great dollops of the dressing. Scandi-style breakfast For the rösti ½ celeriac peeled,

300g floury potatoes peeled ½ onion, peeled and finely chopped, 1 tsp salt, 1 egg 2 heaped tbsp plain flour Vegetable oil, to fry For the rémoulade Juice of 1 lemon, ½ celeriac peeled, 4 tbsp crème fraiche 1½ tbsp Dijon mustard, 1 tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp grated horseradish, 1 small handful dill fronds, finely chopped, plus extra to serve 2 green apples. To serve: Crème fraiche 200g smoked salmon, 1 lemon, quartered. To make the rösti, coarsely grate the celeriac and potatoes, then mix with the onion. Add half the salt and put in a colander set over a bowl, to drain off any liquid. For the rémoulade, fill a bowl with cold water and add half the lemon juice. Cut the celeriac into 2- to 3mm-thick slices (with a mandoline, ideally), then into matchsticks, and add to the bowl (the lemon stops it discolouring). Whisk the crème fraiche with the rest of the lemon juice, mustard and olive oil, season generously, and add the horseradish and dill. Serve straight away, and enjoy.

,

Beetroot soup with dumplings

2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to serve, 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed, 1 onion, peeled and finely diced , 1 tsp fennel seeds. Salt and freshly ground black pepper , 1 litre beef (or vegetable) stock, 600g raw beetroot, peeled and cut into 2cm pieces 1½ tsp lemon juice, 160g soured cream, to serve 5g dill leaves, finely chopped. For the dumplings 3 slices German rye bread (100% rye), lightly toasted and roughly blitzed. Finely grated zest of 1 lemon, 10g dill, finely chopped, 10g tarragon leaves, finely chopped, 40g walnut halves, toasted and roughly chopped, 1 tsp caraway seeds, lightly toasted and crushed, 2 eggs, beaten. Put all the dumpling ingredients in a medium bowl with a good grind of pepper. Mix to combine, then form into 12 dumplings weighing about 30g each, squeezing the mixture very firmly as you shape them; it’s really important to compress the dumplings like this, or they won’t hold together during the cooking. Refrigerate for at least an hour, to firm up. Put the oil for the soup in

a large saucepan on a medium-high heat, then sauté the garlic, onion, fennel seeds and half a teaspoon of salt for about five minutes, until soft. Cover with 750ml of stock, then add the beetroot, lemon juice and a grind of pepper. Turn the heat to medium-low and simmer gently for 50 minutes, until the beetroot is very soft. When the soup has been cooking for 25 minutes, put the remaining stock in a medium saucepan with 250ml water and half a teaspoon of salt. Bring to a simmer, then turn the heat to low. Take the dumplings from the fridge and compress them again. Poach the dumplings in the liquid in two batches for three minutes a batch, turning them halfway, then transfer the cooked dumplings to a plate using a slotted spoon. Strain the stock and water into the soup pot and leave to cook until the 50 minutes is up. Divide the soup between four bowls and top each portion with three dumplings. Spoon the soured cream alongside, drizzle with a little olive oil, sprinkle with dill and serve.

best buds — Estrada’s two rescue dogs, Koelsch the pit bull and a dachshund named Barnabus. Estrada and Lopez even said no when Sage’s family offered them a $1,000 reward. They suggested the money be donated to an animal charity instead. “I’m happy we found the dog,” said Lopez. The news of this rescue has travelled far and wide. Estrada has been receiving phone calls and messages from people all over the world who are moved by his story. Estrada’s kids, however, are a little baffled, he said. The 42-year-old dad has been involved with the fire department for about two decades — he’s currently a fire-fighter and paramedic with the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department — and has rescued a lot of people during that time. About six years ago, he saved a dog that was trapped in a closet in a smoke-filled house. “He was conscious and terrified and couldn’t find his way out,” said Estrada. If he and his family are slightly confused by the attention, Estrada is also pleased that Sage’s rescue provides comfort and joy. He’d like it to inspire more good acts, not just newsworthy ones.

Mozambique’s has pristine islands Mozambique is a destination on the up, thanks to a wealth of natural attractions, in particular vast stretches of unspoilt coastline and picture perfect desert islands. Perhaps lesser known on the luxury holiday circuit than some of its African contemporaries, Mozambique is nevertheless home to a wondrous coastline. With their palm-fringed beaches and pristine coral reefs, the beautiful islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago in the south or the Quirimbas Archipelago in the north make the perfect luxury holiday destination. DID YOU KNOW The country gained independence from Portugal in 1975. The official language spoken in Mozambique is Portuguese. Mozambique’s coastal waters boast some of the richest coral reefs with over 1,200 species of fish. Mozambique Island is a World Heritage Site. The Zambezi River is the longest river in the country. Lake Niassa is one of the largest lakes in Africa. But there’s more than spectacular beachfront lodges to a luxury holiday in Mozambique. Many of the towns on the mainland and on the islands have attractive Portuguese colonialera architecture, and a colourful local culture. A case in point is Ibo Island, whose strategic position has meant it’s been conquered by everyone from the Omanis to the Chinese and eventually the Portuguese.

Stunning Mozambique

You’ll love it

What to do

The waters off Mozambique are one of the world’s hidden gems and the Quirimbas Archipelago has, in our opinion, the best diving on the East African coast From July to November, southern right and humpback whales arrive in the warm coastal waters of the Mozambique Channel to mate and calve Few islands are as unspoilt as those off the coast of Mozambique, often with just one lodge and miles of deserted white sand to make your own while on a luxury holiday.

When a country has this long a coastline, and so many islands, then watersports are going to be high on the list of activities. With that in mind, we work with some excellent companies to offer spectacular kayak and dhow sailing boat safaris along the coastline, exploring places otherwise unreachable. Snorkelling and diving are also highly recommended in the warm waters of the Mozambique Channel. You can arrange private or set departure traditional dhow safaris and kayak safaris between some of the country’s most remote islands, accessible only by boat. The Quirimbas also have some huge underwater drop-offs; researchers have so far catalogued over 354 species of reef fish, five species of turtle and 30 different genera of coral. One of Mozambique’s pristine islands can make a magical destination for a week’s beach holiday – and there’s never been a better time to visit! Pambele ia an exclusive private retreat on the white sand shores of southern Mozambique. Pambele is on the southern border of the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park, renowned for its virgin coral reefs and pristine tropical islands and ideal for diving. Big game fishing and whale-watching is possible from July through to November, and there is a whale breeding area just 30 minutes away by boat. The lodge is fully equipped with vehicles (with drivers) and dive boats and there are kayaks, a traditional sailing dhow and an inflatable rib for snorkelling trips. The Nampula Province is an area delightfully free of tourism, where visitors can wonder around uncontrived beachside villages, stop and watch traditional dhows being built and explore the dilapidated streets of Ilha de Mozambique. Soaking up local life is a huge part of the experience here making it the perfect stop for those who want to get under the skin of the country.

Amazing Auckland

LETS Travel

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the most Cosmopolitan city of the Canaries, and one of the cities with the beast climate in the world thanks to its location, next to the Tropic of Cancer, and also thanks to the trade winds coming from northwest Atlantic. The result is an average temperature of 17ºC in winter and 25ºC in summer. Its wonderful geographical location makes it also the European Capital of Mid-Atlantic and a cultural and financial bridge between Europe, Africa and America. The city of Columbus. Before his first trip, the one of the Discovery, Christopher Columbus stopped in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to repair one of his vessels, La Pinta, a necessary layover to cross the Atlantic. The city, only a small settlement in those days, founded in 1478, began to grow around a few houses which later became the historic borough of Vegueta and the Guiniguada ravine.

From city hot spots to hidden gems. Wherever you go in Auckland, you’ll find something special – it’s a whole region waiting to be explored. The city centre’s world-class shopping, restaurants, bars and galleries are encircled by wine regions, stunning beaches, pristine rainforest and the magnificent Hauraki Gulf. Hauraki Gulf and Island. Discover tranquil islands lined with golden-sand beaches, sip on fine wine on the ‘island of wine’, or go kayaking, sailing or dolphin spotting. North Auckland. Head north and discover the ultimate laid-back lifestyle, where great food and wine is always close at hand and the sea is your constant companion. West Auckland. Journey into a region of natural wonders. Walk through untouched native rainforest, experience the rugged beauty of the wild west coast beaches and visit Auckland’s oldest wine region.

PREVIEW of the 2017 F1 SEASON by Tony Matthews

Formula 1 motor racing will have a very different look to it when it emerges from its winter hibernation in Australia towards the end of March. Firstly, 86 year-old Suffolk-born Bernie Ecclestone will not be in charge! On 23rd January last, it was announced that after 40 years in office, Ecclestone was to be officially replaced by the 62 year-old American businessman, Chase Carey, vice-President of 21st Century Fox. Now bedded in as the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman of the F1 Group, Carey quickly appointed the vastly experienced Ecclestone as Chairman Emeritus of the sport, engaged initially as an advisor to the board. Also, for the first time since 1994, the reigning world champion Nico Rosberg, will not be defending his crown. He is, in fact, the seventh driver not to compete after winning the crown… the other six being Juan Manuel Fangio in 1952 (injured); Mike Hawthorn in 1959 (retired); Jochen Rindt in 1971 (deceased); Jackie Stewart in 1974 (retired); Nigel Mansell in 1993 (switched to Indycar) and Alain Prost, thirteen years ago, in 1994 (retired). So what will be different in Formula 1 this year? * As already aforementioned German World champion Nico Rosberg will not be on the starting grid after retiring. * Brazilian Felipe Massa has decided not to retire and will drive for Williams. * F1 cars will be more than three seconds faster after an overhaul of aero

and tyre rules. In fact, there will be vastly increased speeds when cars take corners. Engineers have already said that the normal 130mph corner will now quite easily become a 150mph bend. * The engine token system has been removed, allowing unrestricted development. * Paddy Lowe has left Mercedes and has replaced Pat Symonds at Williams. * Frederic Vasseur has quit Renault after just one year as team principal. * GB’s Jenson Button will not feature as a driver for the first time in 17 years. * The FIA has clamped down on the stockpiling of engine elements by teams. Comments Mexican Sergio Perez has confidently said that… “Force India can be the surprise package of 2017 – if the car gets the right breaks”. And when managed to catch up with Russian Daniil Kvyat, Spaniard Carlos Sainz and Dutch-Belgian Max Verstappen after they had come off the ski slopes in Kitzbuehel in Austria, they all said, in so many words, that they were “looking forward to having their best year in Formula 1”. Indeed, Verstappen hinted that he sincerely believes that he can ‘challenge strongly for the driver’s championship’. The bookies have already made Hamilton 5/4 favourite in to win his fourth world title. Verstappen, still only 19 years of age, is listed at 11/4 with Ricciardo and Bottas both marked up at 4/1.

19th Hole Golf Society, Match Report

Following the awful weather of last week the 19th Hole Golf Society had to play a re-arranged competition at Marina Golf Resort on Friday 17th March. Thanks to Mike Esposito for diligently investigating all options to get the 19th Holers a game. So it was a 4 ball Texas Scramble played on a surprisingly acceptable course that had been underwater a few days before. The rank outsiders of Tony Mackay, John Kennedy, Pete Dow and John Ball narrowly took the win with a nett 58.6 from the Sean Curtis team of Mark Coffey, Christine Edwards and Ray Wicking on 59.3 just 0.7 behind, Sean’s consolation was taking two Nearest the Pins. Great to see Pat
