Woman fined more than £390,000 for posting eight words on Facebook A woman has been fined more than £390,000 for posting eight words on Facebook. In 2015, Jacquelyn Hammond, from Asheville, posted a comment on Facebook, accusing an acquaintance, Davyne Dial, of killing her son. Ms Dial, general manager of a local radio station, lost her son a few years ago in a gun accident and had nothing to do with it. Yet despite this, Hammond wrote: ‘I didn’t get drunk and kill my kid.’ The pair became friends when they tried to gain control over the radio station but their relationship broke down when they started working together. After seeing the comment, Ms Dial decided to sue Hammond for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Michael Wimer, Ms Dial’s lawyer, stated in court

documents that the false comment about Ms Dial ‘blatantly accused (Dial) of a reprehensible felony crime of manslaughter or murder’. Speaking to her local paper after the verdict, Ms Dial said: ‘This woman had been carrying on a smear campaign against me for nearly a year on social media. ‘And social media makes it very easy to do this. There are no filters to say whatever you think behind the safety of your screen. You could be fined £117 if you don’t display this sticker when driving in France ‘She had made other untrue statements through the years, but when this happened, it was very painful.’ Last month, Ms Dial was awarded $250,000 in actual damages and $250,000 in punitive damages, for a total

judgment of $500,000. Missy Owen, a lawyer in North Carolina, said people should learn from Hammond’s mistake. She said: ‘I think people today don’t recognise the importance of their words. Just because it is very easy to get your words out there does not mean you should. ‘You can get in trouble anytime you make a false statement about someone else that damages their character or reputation. ‘Anybody who learns about this case should think twice before angrily posting on their Facebook page about somebody else, if what they have to say is not true.’

SPAIN MAKES POSITION CLEAR ON GIBRALTAR’S POST-BREXIT FUTURE

Spain’s top diplomat said Sunday that his government is urging the European Union to side with Madrid on the future of the British territory of Gibraltar, which lies at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and Spain has long sought to reclaim. Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis told Spanish newspaper El Pais that

Madrid insists it should get a veto over any agreements regarding the strategic enclave as Britain prepares to leave the EU. “We have spoken to our fellow (EU) members and institutions in recent weeks and have made clear Spain’s position: when the U.K. leaves the EU, the member nation of the EU is Spain, and in the case of Gibraltar

Brussels suggested last week that it was prepared to give Spain such a veto, angering and upsetting people in Gibraltar. Spain has long sought to regain control of the strategic territory that it has longed to reclaim since ceding its control to Britain in 1713. British Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday offered reassurances to Gibraltar that the UK remains steadfastly committed to the overseas territory and its 32,000 residents. May’s Downing Street office said that she phoned the chief minister of Gibraltar, Fabian Picardo, to assure him that Britain remains “absolutely dedicated to working with Gibraltar for the best possible outcome on Brexit and will continue to involve them fully in the process.” On Wednesday, Britain’s invocation of Article 50 of the EU’s central treaty started a two-year period to negotiate its exit for the 28-member club. In the newspaper interview, Dastis said Spain would not close the border with Gibraltar after Britain leaves the EU. Such a move would threaten jobs on both sides, and “I don’t see how that would benefit us,” he said. Dastis said that Spain will push during Brexit negotiations for a “reciprocal principle” regarding workers’ rights and immigration. “If London takes measures that hurt the rights of Europeans, we will do that same (with British residents in the EU),” he said. “We want a balanced, reasonable and thorough deal.” Spain also favors a “soft” Brexit that would allow the U.K. to keep at least some of its access to the lucrative common market, as opposed to its outright exclusion, he said,

noting that the EU has such agreements with non-member nations Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

But those deals include the free movement of people among EU countries, something that the British government has pledged to stop once it withdraws from the bloc. “The idea is for the UK’s status, after it

leaves, to be as similar as possible to the one it has now,” Dastis said. “It can’t be based on the free movement of peoples, but we have regulations for non-member countries that are very close to those regarding European Union citizens.” Dastis also weighed in on another British question: the consequences of Scotland possibly holding a second referendum on independence. The “No” vote won in 2014, and now secessionists want a redo after the Scots favored remaining in the EU in last year’s Brexit vote. “In theory, I don’t see why we would have to block” the re-entry of Scotland into the EU, Dastis said. Spain is facing its own regional breakaway effort by North Eastern Catalonia, making its willingness to re-admit Scotland to the EU in the case of its independence rather surprising.

Alqueria de Golf

Alqueria is a paradise for golfers. Well that’s the advertising blurb, in fact no one in Alqueria can even play the game. But complete ignorance has never stopped anyone from doing anything. The world’s politicians are testimony to the fact that the bigger the country the bigger the level of ignorance at the top.

The topography of Alqueria’s golf course was interesting to say the least. Built on waste ground to the east of the Río Verde, where so many failed Alquerian projects had been situated, it was mainly swamp strewn with semi-submerged and ruined buildings. The turf floated on a soup of disgusting black ‘Río Verde’ slime. Golfers balanced on small rafts of artificial grass as they tried to hit golf balls that slowly sank into the foul smelling ooze. Respirators had to be worn to avoid the fumes rendering one unconscious. The greens were more solid but had to be arrived at by negotiating the convoluted Río Verde which meanders its disgusting way around, through and under the golf course. Many a daring golfer met his end trying to cross the River which can only be traversed at certain times of the day due to the feeding habits of some of its larger inhabitants. All holes on the greens are attached via a network of plastic tubing which allows the balls to be collected at the club house and sold back to the golfers. One

individual has bought the same ball two hundred and forty six times. Antonio Poyato, alive to the needs of the modern golfer decided to invent a device which would render the bag full of clubs that golfers lugs about redundant. He developed the ‘Swiss Army’ golf club. Instead of the twelve or fourteen clubs required for various obscure purposes, Poyato only required one. It weighed nine and a half kilograms however and was festooned with levers, buttons and knobs which controlled the deployment of a multitude of heads. Unfortunately it malfunctioned pole-axing half a dozen golfers, destroying Alqueria’s newly built public urinal and causing the Spanish Navy to deploy an aircraft carrier off the nearby coast. But why did the golfers come to Alqueria in the first place? They came after being lured by video footage of legitimate courses on the Costa del Sol with badly edited superimposed images of Alqueria. The promises made by Manuela also had something to do with the male contingent arriving, while the wives wisely tagged along to keep an eye on their potentially wayward husbands. Once in Alqueria their passports, ready cash and dignity were confiscated and only returned when their bank accounts were emptied. They were then deposited over the Alquerian border in Spain where the Spanish authorities were left to repatriate these unfortunates. The golf course has now been closed under threat of Spanish military action.

A Win-win Situation

The jigsaw puzzle, bought with such gung-ho, seemed to have grown in transit from the shop, and I began to doubt my own boast about the size of our kitchen table and its ability to accommodate a 3,000 piece puzzle. The tape measure was fetched, and Doubt chuckled – The kitchen table was about 4 inches too narrow! There was nothing for it, we would have to swap it for a more modestly sized puzzle. We then moved on to registering our robotic red penguin, aka the coffee maker, as favoured by George Clooney. ‘Do it online, it’s easy’ the Chica had assured us. When it comes to the computer Pete has the patience of Job, but marginally more computer savvy. With sporadic assistance from me he persevered for 2½ hours to no avail - he had run through the procedure 7 times, but the machine was still resolutely unregistered! We decided to take it and the puzzle back, and let those who thought it was easy wrestle with the problem. I left Pete and Chica #2 crowded round the shop computer while I browsed for another puzzle with which to swap my over-ambitious choice for something more compatible with our kitchen table.

However, smaller puzzles are also cheaper; I was not expecting money back, as the initial mistake had been mine, so I chose 2 to make up the purchase price, deposited them on the counter and settled to watch as Chica #2 and Pete consistently failed to complete registration of the pesky

By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com

penguin. I was sneakily quite pleased as I watched them tussling with the electronic embodiment of Nescafé – quite easy it was not! It would have been simpler to sculpt the Eiffel Tower out of jelly! However, eventually they wore it down. With bad grace Nescafé admitted defeat, and acknowledged the red penguin as one of its own. Pete gathered up the precious paperwork that confirmed our ownership of the penguin and I scooped up my 2 puzzles. ‘Wait!’ Chica #1 called. ‘You’ve forgotten your change.’ She added, proffering 3 euro coins. ‘Those puzzles are cheaper.’ I had expected a swap, not money back! So all-in-all, it was a win-win situation for us – I got 2 puzzles and some money back in exchange for 1, and Pete got the penguin registered. However, I am a little disappointed – I am still waiting for George Clooney to put in an appearance in our kitchen!

Why Scotland is good for Brexit by Alastair Stewart - editor@darrow.org.uk

Brexit has formally begun. Theresa May has submitted the Article 50 notice to Brussels thus beginning a two-year countdown to an EU departure. In this Scotland, is the barometer of what the public will stomach. This sounds arrogant. But how often to you get a living conscience about what you’re doing? Well, it used to be weekly. Unfortunately, Jeremy Corbyn has proven to be an ineffectual and weak Labour leader. This goes beyond politics. His full title is ‘Leader of Her Majesty’s Most Loyal Opposition’ and Corbyn’s duty is to manage or ‘whip’ his representatives into forming a policy platform which is critical of the UK Government. In this, Corbyn has proven a lethargic failure, allowing the Conservatives to run roughshod over Parliament with little accountability. The SNP, it’s 54 representatives in Westminster and the Scottish Government are now, with some irony, the de facto Opposition of the UK precisely because they have held the government

to task at every turn. They are not wrong to do so. Under the Scotland Act 1998, ‘reserved’ issues such as defence and foreign affairs are left to Westminster and ‘devolved’ policy areas such as health and education are under the purview of the Scottish Government. And Brexit will touch on every facet of Scottish public life. Over the last 19 years of devolution, if a Westminster policy infringed on devolved areas of Scottish Parliament jurisdiction, such as with the HS2 railway link and welfare reform, it required a Legislative Consent Motion from the Parliament to grant permission. The issue is a matter of perspective. In 2014, the Scottish independence referendum was won by 55 to 45 percent of the vote and thus the reserved- devolved arrangement remained. At the 2015 UK General Election, the SNP received 49.97 percent of the vote but a Conservative Government formed anyway with 14.9 percent. At the 2016 Scottish Parliament

elections, the SNP won a majority of 48.8 percent of the vote in Scotland with a clear promise to hold a second referendum “if there is a significant and material change…such as Scotland being taken out of the EU against our will.” Nearly two months later and 62 percent of Scots voted to Remain in the European Union and it’s now being removed from it nine months later. Even if one acknowledges that Scotland voted ‘No’ to independence in 2014, and even if it’s conceded therefore that Scotland is a collection of constituencies and not an individual nation in UK general elections, it is impossible to deny that the reality of Brexit will affect every devolved sphere of Scottish society. Whatever your views on Scottish independence, Nicola Sturgeon and the Scottish Government are maxing their constitutional leverage and doing a service to Scotland and the rest of the UK in the process

has it all.....

History: The history of Arboleas is not different of that of the Comarca del Almanzora (Almanzora region). The river that crosses it becomes a historic path used by different cultures as a way of entering the PenĂnsula. According to the archaeological remains found, we can say that the human settlements in Arboleas go back until the Neolithic period and Bronze Age. There are also Argaric, Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman remains. Most of the remains of the cultures that have populated Arboleas are from the Islamic period: architecture, gastronomy, customs, ... Arboleas was transferred in 1488 to the Christians, together with other towns of the Comarca del Almanzora (Almanzora region), witnessing all of them the Moorish revolts all throughout the XVI century. These revolts ended up in the different expulsions of the native population, and in the repopulation of the region with people that came mainly from the Eastern region of the Peninsula. Ancient History: The prehistorical settlements on the South East of the Peninsula, were followed by the Argaric culture, with important remains such as the ones in Antas. Argaric culture was a very advanced civilization, and it has been deeply studied. Some of its remains can be found in the Almeria Museum. Although there are not reliable data of its presence in Arboleas, that does not mean that this culture did not settle here; and if they had established in Arboleas, it is thought that it would have been in the area were the Torre VigĂa (watchtower) is located. After this culture, it was the Phoenicians the next culture to enter the Peninsula, around 2.000 B.C. They came in through Villaricos and they initially settled in Cuevas del Almanzora, where the first caves were built; caves used as warehouses that can still be visited. From there, they would follow the course of the river up, and Phoenicians tombs made with Macael Marvel can be found in different places on the South East of the Peninsula. There are not reliable remains of this period in Arboleas either. The Phoenicians gave way to the Carthaginians Carthaginians and Romans were fighting over the control of the Mediterranean Sea. Carthaginians were the first ones to enter the Peninsula. They entered through the Almanzora river and they settled all around the Comarca (Region). Remains of this culture are the watchtowers, and messages using the smoke signs technique were sent from these towers. One of these watchtowers, located in Arboleas, was later rebuilt in the Middle ages. After Carthaginians, Romans came. Romans left several remains around the Comarca (Region). Jose Martinez Avellaneda The most important remain of this period is the Roman Pol. Ind. Los Llanos 04660 Arboleas (Almeria) path that ran through the valley and joined Baza and Lorca. Tel: 950 430 208 There are also inns from this period, such as Venta Mateo.

Well Done to Owen. Most improved student in February

Mrs H from Cucador tells her story. In January 2009 I had a knee

replacement in the UK. I did not get much physiotherapy after the operation which left me with very little movement, I was unable to bend my knee back or walk straight, I was also very stiff. I moved to Spain in Nov 2010, my friend had told me about Sophia Wellness Centre in Arboleas. I went along to see if they could help in some way.....I was offered a free consultation and trial. I was impressed with the results even on that first trial..............what I liked was that Michele, the fitness instructor, stayed with me to make sure I was doing everything correctly............ I now go to the centre 3 times a week each time I come away feeling so much better. Now I have greater movement in my knee and can go walking with my friends and do things that I have not done in a long while. Jill B from Arboleas.....this has changed my life, I have MS and when I first went to Sophia´s I had to use a crutch to get around, now I am able to walk unaided...........I have just returned from a trip to Paris and I have walked miles with no problems, I could not have done that a year ago!

Safe Ways to Manage Chronic Agony

Cardiologist and study author Professor Gunnar Gislason of the Danish Heart Foundation says his study underlines existing concerns. “We found there was an increase in sudden cardiac deaths among people on prescribed NSAIDs [non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs]; an increased risk of 31% associated with ibuprofen use, and 50% with diclofenac.” If you are fit and healthy, the increased risk is unlikely to put you in any danger. But if you are already at high risk, taking NSAIDs is a serious decision that you should discuss

with a healthcare professional. Gislason sees it as a major public health issue that needs tackling. But Dr Alan Fayaz, specialist in pain medicine at University College London, says chronic pain itself can put a strain on the heart, irrespective of NSAID use. Furthermore, people who are prescribed long-term, highdose NSAIDs are more likely to have other health problems than those that are not, so it can be hard to be certain to what degree the NSAIDs are causing the extra cases of heart attack and stroke. But Fayaz does agree that NSAIDs certainly cause side-effects, including bleeding from the gut and kidney damage, and should be used with caution. Is pain ever good? Losing the ability to feel pain makes the world a dangerous

place. A short-term pain response makes us snatch our hand out of the fire or jump back from an electric shock. Usually, once the cause of pain (trauma, infection or inflammation) has healed, the pain goes away. But sometimes pain becomes a chronic problem. This might be because the underlying cause – a painful ulcer, say – hasn’t healed, or the condition recurs (as in migraine) for reasons that no one can fathom. Once pain becomes chronic, it is a devil to treat. Changes in the brain and spinal cord, called central sensitisation, mean you experience more and more pain with less

and less provocation. You are more likely to experience chronic pain if you are old, female and live in poor housing. But recovery is possible; two-thirds of those with chronic pain get better over time – although that still leaves an estimated 11% of adults and 8% of children who suffer severe pain. Can I avoid chronic pain to start with? If only. But there are some precautions worth taking. Top up vitamin D levels by getting out in

BOOK REVIEW

The Escape by C.L.Taylor. “She isn’t afraid of going outside, she’s afraid of situations where she can’t escape or get help.” It seems that some things are impossible to escape: tragic incidents in the past, something we can all relate to. Bury the skeletons and what happens? Eventually, things will surface and we have to attempt to deal with the impossible. Taylor has created a credible character in the form of Jo. Blackmore, still grieving over the loss of her baby son and suffering from agoraphobia. Her husband, Max, an investigative journalist (or a crime reporter) is portrayed less sympathetically, seems to be far too protective of Jo and obsessive with his young daughter Elise. He has been instrumental in the conviction of Ian White who had set up a national chain of money-lending shops that charged extortionate interest rates for vulnerable people such as single mums, pensioners and people on benefits. When they were unable to repay the loans they were threatened with violence: “coercion, drug-taking and violence were rife.” Max went under-cover and collected evidence

Special Offers Visit:

for prosecution. The opening is dramatic with an unsavoury woman called Paula threatening poor, anxious Jo: “I’ve lost something. And I think your husband might know where it is.” Her final ominous warning disturbs Jo: “You should keep an eye on your daughter’s things… and your daughter.” Jo becomes paranoid that this wicked person is going to kidnap her daughter and she blames Max for putting the family in danger. It doesn’t take long before the state of their marriage is laid bare: loveless and sexless. Jo indicates to her friend Helen that she wants a divorce. Max discovers this and tries desperately to keep his family together. He has had such an unhappy childhood and wants to prove he can be a wonderful father to Elise. His feelings for his wife are less convincing though. A number of unfortunate incidents befall Jo indicating that she may be incapable of caring for her daughter. Jo is convinced that Paula is behind all of this, too naïve to recognise the truth until it stares her in the face. But is it too late? The prospect of an arrest and losing a second child proves too much for her so she leaves Bristol in disguise, heading to Ireland, like a fugitive on the run from the police, social services and her husband, clinging to her daughter like a limpet until the bitter end. More disasters though before a tense finale. What happened to Mary, her landlady and who killed her child, the one that looked like Jo’s daughter? Can Jo ever escape her past and provide a happy and stable environment for her daughter? It’s an excellent read and gripping as a psychological thriller from start to finish. he 1992 Grand National winner, Party Politics, was T an absolutely outstanding horse and won a Grand National that was both competitive and entertaining, even by the Aintree race’s high standards. Thus, it is easy to see why there is so much attention being paid to Le Mercurey.

Just like Party Politics, the horse in question was bought just before the showcase race by Patricia Thompson. The fact Le Mercurey will be sporting the same colours as the ‘92 winner has certainly caught the eye of many punters. Thompson, who owns Cheverly Park Stud with her husband David, has proved that she has an eye for a great horse. That being said, many would argue that her latest buy’s chances are more obvious than previous efforts. Le Mercurey came in just behind the 2015 hero Many Clouds at the course in December and has also finished second to Gold Cup challenger Native River in recent times. Le Mercurey was also in the places when warming up for the big race at Kelso last month. Mr Nicholls, who already has a Grand National winner in Neptune Collognes (2012), went on to explain why star jockey Sam Twiston-Davies will be taking on another ride in the big race. He added: “He was ridden there by Sean Bowen who keeps the mount as Sam Twiston-Davies has chosen another of mine, Saphir Du Rheu, who finished a close fifth in the Gold Cup earlier this month.”

Inheritance tax has been reduced

Question: Is it true that inheritance tax has been reduced in Andalucía? Answer: Yes it is true, and the new exemptions are valid for deaths after the 1st of January of 2017. Exemptions have been increased for group I and II heirs (spouse and descendants). They have increased for spouse and descendants from 175,000€ to 250,000€. Just as important is that, unlike the old system where if you received one euro more than 175,000€ you would only be entitled to 16,000€ exemption (in other words basically no exempt amount), under the new system you do not lose the exemption completely if the inheritance is over 250,000€. What happens is that they allow you an exemption of the first 200,000€ and then charge you on the difference. But be very careful, if a descendent or wife receives one euro more than 350,000€ then you will lose your right to the exemption completely. Conclusion for tax planning: Each beneficiary (spouse or descendent) must not receive more than 350,000€. All of the above only applies to spouse and descendants. All other beneficiaries get a much worse tax deal. Exemptions for inheritance of family home and family businesses have also been increased. Michael Davies. Abogado. Britain will get money back from the EU instead of paying to leave under plans being considered by ministers

B

ritain will get money back from the European Union instead of paying to leave under plans being considered by Cabinet ministers. European leaders have warned the UK that it will face a divorce bill of up to £50million for outstanding commitments and pension liabilities.

However The Telegraph understands that officials are currently drawing up a register of the UK’s assets in the European Union as part of negotiations. It comes after an influential Lords’ committee concluded that the Government is not legally obliged to pay Brussels anything. A Government source said: “This is being presented in a binary way as a divorce bill, in which we owe them. It’s not like that. It’s more like leaving a gym or a club. You don’t continue to pay for other people to use the facilities after you leave”. Officials believe that the UK is entitled of £9billion worth of funds currently held by the European Investment Bank. Separate analysis has suggested that the UK is entitled to a further £14billion worth of EU assets including property, cash and other investments. Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, last month invoked Margaret Thatcher’s success

in securing the rebate when she was Prime Minister when asked about the prospect of a divorce bill.

He said: “I think we have illustrious precedent in this matter: I think you can recall the 1984 Fontainebleau summit in which Mrs Thatcher said she wanted her money back and I think that is exactly what we will get.” It comes after the European Union made a significant climb-down in the wake of Theresa May triggering Article 50 and formally starting Brexit negotiations. European leaders conceded that the EU and the UK do not have to reach an agreement on the divorce bill before Brexit talks begin. Eastern European leaders also said that they regard the bill as a “technical issue” that of secondary importance to securing the migrant rights. Henry Newman, Director of Open Europe said: “That balance sheet must consider not just the UK’s commitments, but also its share of EU assets and claims. This could include things like a proportion of EU property (embassies and official buildings), EU future spending earmarked for the UK, as well as cash and potentially loans. Britain’s permanent representative to the European Union Tim Barrow leaves after he delivered British Prime

Minister Theresa May’s Brexit letter to EU Council President Donald Tusk in Brussels

“Theresa May has - rightly - accepted the principle that both sides should settle their outstanding commitments. But while we should agree a methodology for doing this early on, there’s no way any British PM could agree to signing a blank cheque at the start of negotiations”. Theresa May has said that Britain will meet its “obligations” to the European Union, although the Government strongly disputes claims it owes £50billion. Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary Iain Duncan Smith, a Tory MP and former Conservative leader, said: “We have put into the place half a trillion pounds over the past 40 years which has never come back. That’s invested in all sorts of stuff there. “We have intellectual property rights, physical investment in buildings, money in the European investment bank. We own a chunk of the EU, we don’t owe them any money. “They are petrified that in two years’ time we will pull out and they will lose the second highest donor to the Budget. We should sweep that to one side and say honestly, these back of the envelope calculations do nobody any good.

CanDu Computer Bytes

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. The only professional computer help that comes from over 38 years’ experience and a University education. You can contact me for an appointment at my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk. Have you heard an unusual click coming from your computer? Should you be concerned? Should you run to the same people who tell you that you need this or that and then offer to sell it to you? Most of the people I have come across lately have told this same story.

a turbine winding up just after you turn it on. This is exactly as it should be on some computers.

So let´s look at the first of the usual suspects. After many hundreds of hours of use, fan bearing wear. It is a slight wobble that result is usually a soft but irregular click that over time, as it wears further, becomes a soft regular click. This is usually the fan blade catching on part of the housing. When this happens the fan wants replacing. Some are easy to replace (exhaust and processor fans) and some almost impossible (Video card fans). Fans are cheaper than replacing a burned out computer, are reasonably easy to get hold of and, in the easy cases, can be swapped out with a screwdriver and a little patience. Next time I will look at some of the more serious problems.

Well, I can tell you that it is normal for your computer to make the softest of clicks, or the normal sound of a fan spinning, and very little else. It is true that some monitors and speakers make a noise when the current first surges through their circuits and then go quiet, or a tower can sound like

pause for thought

“Pride”, we’re told, “comes before a fall”. And we doubtless all have memories in which a sense of elation was followed by a rapid descent to Earth. I well remember a time in the 70’s when the boss publicly congratulated me for a job well done, promising that my achievement would not go unrewarded. And just 4 weeks later, the ‘reward’ materialised - in the form of a redundancy notice, replacing the earlier sense of euphoria with one of utter panic and disbelief. But the emotions I experienced then would have been nothing compared with those of the disciples in the days before that first Easter, nearly 2000 years ago. Jesus had been causing shock-waves as he challenged the religious leaders of his time. Confounded by his miracles of healing, his care for the downtrodden and his absolute integrity, they were humiliated into silence by his replies to their cleverest arguments, and the people, convinced that he was the promised messiah, who would overthrow their Roman overlords were becoming increasingly vocal in their adulation, culminating in that Sunday when the crowds noisily escorted him into Jerusalem, acclaiming him as their King. How excited his disciples must have felt believing the time had come when they would share positions of power

and authority as the momentum of public support simply drove them forward! Yet just four days later, Jesus was arrested and tried overnight by Kangaroo Court, with the mob (many of whom had earlier joined in naming him King) screaming for his execution! His followers, so recently on ‘cloud nine’, scattered in fear for their own lives, utterly dejected and humiliated, unable to comprehend the rapidity of their downfall as Jesus was taken away and crucified. It’s hard to imagine the depth of their despair, yet over the next few days, they not only recovered, but went around boldly condemning their leaders’ actions and asserting that Jesus had been raised and they’d met him. How great must the experience have been that could so change these men! Serves 8 (with leftovers), 14 (without). Scotch or black Welsh beef forerib 3.8kg (a 4-rib joint), onions 2, peeled and cut into 1cm rounds garlic oil 2 x 15ml tbsp. Maldon salt 1½ tsp or ¾ tsp table salt dried thyme 1 tsp cayenne pepper ½ tsp. For the port and stilton gravy. Fatty juices from the roast beef tin 2 x 15ml tbsp plain flour 1 x 15ml tbsp ruby port 125ml, plus 1 x 15ml tbsp cooked onions

from the roast beef tin (optional), organic beef stock 500ml, “fresh” from a shop-bought tub blue cheese 125g redcurrant jelly 1 tsp salt and pepper to taste extra juices from the roast beef tin and carving board. Take your beef out of the fridge to bring to room temperature, which could take an hour or possibly more, and preheat the oven to 220C/gas mark 7. Put the onion slices into a roasting tin and sit the rib

Smear the oil over the white fat of the rib, and sprinkle with the salt, thyme and cayenne pepper. Cook according to the beef’s weight and your taste. I like my beef nice and underdone, so I give it 33 minutes per kg/15 minutes per lb, which means, for a joint this size, a cooking time of about 2 hours unless the beef’s straight out of the fridge, in which case, add another 20 minutes or so. If you want medium beef, give the joint, from room temperature, 44 minutes per kg/20 minutes per lb, and if you like well-done meat, 66 minutes per kg/30 minutes per lb. As for feeding capacity, this size of joint will certainly look

If you want to blend the onions and stock, do so now, by putting any but the blackened onions in the blender goblet with the beef stock, and liquidizing. Or leave the stock just as it is, straight out of the tub. Take the saucepan off the heat, and gradually whisk in the beef stock. When all the stock’s added, put the pan back on the heat and cook, whisking to make sure any lumps are banished, on low for 2 minutes. Crumble in the stilton, then drop in the redcurrant jelly and turn up the heat to let the gravy bubble slightly. Then the remaining tablespoon of port, along with any bloody juices put into gravy boat and serve.

Fancy making your own Easter egg?

Roxanne Fisher discovers how easy it really is... Chocolate button egg I always toy with the idea of crafting my own Easter egg, but the assumed impossibility of the project means I succumb year-after-year to BOGOF brands or swanky Belgian bunnies. Inspired by Good Food's lovely simple chocolate button egg, I decided this was the year to roll up my sleeves, borrow some egg moulds and investigate just how easy making your own really is...The chocolate. Immediately I was fearful that the cocoa content in my chosen chocolate was only 70%, while the recipe used 82% - but thankfully 'good quality' were the key words to focus on and it melted and set beautifully. Two 100g bars of quality supermarket, own-brand chocolate set me back £2. Decorative delights aside, this is the only ingredient you need. Thoughtful AND thrifty. All was looking good from the off. Step 1: Melting the chocolate. I'll confess now, I didn't have a thermometer. While the recipe doesn't call for it, tempering chocolate is key to avoiding that mottled look and my masterpiece suffered from the patchy effect, which doesn't alter taste but scuppered my chances of a professional finish. However, thermometer-free homes need not despair. This piece of kit can be pricey and some clever decorating of your egg (see our ideas below) can completely hide a mottle-mishap. Step 2: First layer. I was unconvinced that my melted chocolate would keep its shape. I was certain I'd be left with a gloopy mess in the middle of the moulds

but this turned out to be a fun and satisfyingly simple step that older children would love to help with. Refraining from taking it straight off the heat and slapping it in, I allowed the chocolate to cool and then, using a pastry brush, I spooned and spread a quarter of the chocolate evenly around each of the two mould halves then left to set. Tip: To make Good Food's chocolate Krispie chick recipe all you need to do is add 50g Rice Krispies when you take the chocolate off the heat. You'll only need one layer too. Step 3: Second layer. Buoyed by a successful start, I popped the two set egg halves in the fridge for the strict five-minute time allowance and in the meantime reheated the remaining chocolate before once again leaving to cool. Again, I was surprised by the lack of drama involved, though if striving for perfection, I would recommend ensuring you have equal measures for each mould before applying your second layer (one half of my egg was definitely a little chunkier than the other.) Tip: While the drying time wasn't in fact as lengthy as I expected, patience is not my virtue and I can imagine younger children would find the waiting quite frustrating. Making treats to go inside your egg is a lovely extra touch, so try making some of the suggestions below while your egg sets - guaranteed to distract even the most impatient little chefs. Step 4: Becoming one. I left my egg to dry the second time for about two hours. This was possibly a little excessive (it looked ready after about an hour) but I wanted to be sure it wouldn't crack when eased from the mould. After

Kalevala

a brief stint in the fridge again I gingerly eased the edges of the mould away from the rim of the egg, turned it upside down and (very) gently squeezed it out onto greaseproof paper. And it really was that simple - one whole egg, with not a break in sight. I reheated the remaining tablespoon of chocolate, brushed the edges as the recipe instructed, popped in some sweets and placed the other half on top, filling in any gaps. Once completely dry (only 20 minutes this time) we had our four-year-old neighbour on hand to cover our creation in magic stars... and that was it!

Barking mad!!!

Fears have been voiced that North Norfolk could lose its appeal as a dog-friendly visitor destination if new restrictions are introduced. North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet is set to meet in Cromer on Monday to vote on proposals for new Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) They include proposals to create new no-go areas for dogs and other areas where they must be kept on a lead at all times. The revised scheme, which replaces previous powers, is accompanied by a request from Natural England for PSPOs to be extended to all areas covered by an SSSI - a Special Site of Scientific Interest. But pet owners have argued that the plans would

require costly signage, are unenforceable, discriminate against dogs - which they point out have a right to exercise and do nothing to address the problems posed by wild animals and littering which they claim is a greater nuisance than dog fouling. Commenting on the consultation, the Kennel Club, which promotes the general improvement of dogs, said: “The Kennel Club welcomes the decision of the council to remove some of the dogs on lead and exclusion areas but believes that some of the remaining and new proposals are overly restrictive. “For example, from the information published in association with the consultation, a year round dog

exclusion at the Goggs Mill Picnic Area, Fakenham would seem to be excessive. “With regard to sports pitches, we ask local authorities to consider whether or not access restrictions are absolutely necessary. If they are deemed to be needed, whether ‘in use’ or seasonal restrictions would be more appropriate than an outright ban.” And Lee Paris, campaigns officer at Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, added: “It would perhaps be beneficial to the council to reconsider such exclusions on the grounds that dog-friendly tourism may suffer as a result of such bans.”

Conservative Rebecca Pow (Taunton Deane) told colleagues that some dogs were being prescribed Valium to help them calm them down after being cooped up inside for hours without their owners. Her remarks came as part of a backbench debate on animal welfare in the Commons, where she also described an incident in her Somerset constituency where dairy cows were kicked and abused by a farm worker. Ms Pow, who is co-chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare, said: “As many

AWESOME Cape Town

LETS Travel

Amsterdam is one of the greatest small cities in the world. From Amsterdam canals to world-famous Amsterdam museums and historical Amsterdam sights, it is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Europe. Canal cruises are a popular way to see the city from the perspective of its canals. Amsterdam is also a city of tolerance and diversity. It has all the advantages of a big city: rich culture, lively Amsterdam nightlife, international restaurants, good transport - but is quiet, and largely thanks to its extensive canals, has a little road traffic. In this city your destination is never far away, but get a bike for an authentic local experience. And if you are staying for longer, consider a daytrip from Amsterdam to see also the surrounding towns and villages. Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Everyone knows the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum, but there is much more.

With over 300 small islands, an abundance of beaches and colourful coral gardens, Fiji is an ocean lover’s paradise. So it’s a natural fit as a reference for the movie, because Moana is constantly drawn to the ocean. We’d like to think if Motonui had internet, Moana would be a fan of an islands.com! Then there’s the pristine white beaches lapped by – it must be said – a chilly Atlantic, their curves defined by giant granite boulders to bake on, and burbling mountain streams in dappled forests. The proximity of nature is a constant source of amazement here, whether it is spotting zebra and wildebeest grazing on the slopes of Table Mountain from the highway, watching whales breach from a restaurant deck overlooking False Bay, supplicating before the Twelve Apostles mountain during a yoga class on Camps Bay beach or being halted by cavorting baboons near Cape Point.

Cars to improve lives

Costa Almeria Area (CAA) 3-2-1 Report 2017 The CAA 3-2-1 Competition was held at Indalo Bowls Club from the 29th Until the 31st March, twenty-two teams from Indalo, Almeria, Cabrera and Mojacar bowling clubs, split into four groups of 5 or 6 teams, playing each other. Each team played six ends with a triple, followed by a pair ending with a single. Played as a round -robin with each discipline gaining two points for a win, one for a draw and two for an overall win for each match. Friday 31st the semi’s and finals took place. Tony and Mary Mullen with Dave Brannon were the winners over Doug, Mo Frith and substitute Ray Male. In the other semi-final the team of John, Sue Mannall and Jan Dando came out the winners against Jill, Andy Cooper and Doreen Hall. The Final was a classic to watch. The Triples were a nip and tuck game resulting in a

draw at 4-4. The Pairs was very similar and drew again at 3-3. All now depended on the Singles between John Mannall and Tony Mullen. The high quality of play continued but Tony was unable to overcome the pressure of Johns play, who ended winning 8-5 and of course winning the Championship with his wife Sue and Jan Dando. On completion of competition David Horton, President of Indalo Bowling Club Presented the Trophy and prizes. Before this he thanked Ruth Compton for the organisation and running a very successful 321 competition. He also thanked the Indalo committee for their help in ensuring everything went smoothly, the bar staff for keeping us all refreshed and finally Colin Wright, John Sephton and Ken Richardson for umpiring. Vic Parsons - CAA Press Secretary

Half of mobility-limited people and six in ten overall would have a higher quality of life with an autonomous and connected vehicle, a new study conducted by the SMMT has shown. 71% of respondents aged between 17 and 24 saw autonomous cars bringing improvement to their lives – the most positive demographic – although the general population was 56% positive overall. This still leaves 44% not feeling positive. However, trust of the public is often cited as a barrier-to-entry for autonomous cars. The two largest stress-relieving attractions for those surveyed were autonomous braking and self-diagnosis of faults, although the main benefit of those surveyed was the comparative ease of going out; 49% of those with mobility-related disabilities said that an autonomous car would allow them to leave the house more often. More widely, the advent of mobility schemes promises money savings for young people, with 29% agreeing that the cost of owning and running a car was restrictive, while 33% dubbed public transport as too expensive and infrequent.

Fifa looks into leg-break

Fifa has opened proceedings against Wales full-back Neil Taylor after his leg-breaking challenge on the Republic of Ireland’s Seamus Coleman.

The Everton defender, 28, was taken off on a stretcher after the tackle, for which Taylor was sent off, during Friday’s World Cup qualifier in Dublin. Coleman was taken to hospital and required surgery on a double break. Taylor, 28, will be suspended for the qualifier in Serbia in June, but could have his one-game ban extended by Fifa.

Seamus like I do were gutted.

“He asked me to check if it would be OK to go to see Seamus in hospital. He got his number off me and sent him a text straight away. “When I found out it was a broken leg it made me feel sick inside because it’s someone who I like so much and is one of my mates.” Taylor began his professional career at Wrexham before moving to Swansea in 2010, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2011. The left-back moved to Aston Villa in January.

Wales captain Ashley Williams said Taylor wanted to visit Coleman in hospital, and sent him a text message from the Aviva Stadium. “Neil was gutted. He was sitting on the floor virtually in tears,” he said “Even
