‘Stolen baby’ finds her mum & siblings 44 years later A 44-year-old woman from Valencia who always suspected she was a ‘stolen baby’ has found her family. According to a report by ThinkSpain, Isabel A.P., who was born in the Casa Cuna Santa Isabel on February 18, 1969, says her biological mother was told after the birth that the child was a boy and had died during labour. “After 44 years, it turns out I’m a girl and very much alive,” says Isabel. She said on her Facebook site: “DNA tests have confirmed 100 per cent what our hearts told us, each and every one of us. “Soon I’ll be able to hug my mother and give her the kiss that was stolen from us when I was born.” As well as finding her mother, Isabel has discovered she has four siblings. She says she is looking forward to ‘making up for lost time’ and ‘sharing her life’ with her new family. Isabel says her discovery ‘marks a before and after’ in the countrywide scandal of babies who were stolen between approximately 1936 and 1990, and highlights the ‘injustices committed’ and ‘how people playing
God decided our lives for us’. The campaign group SOS Niños Robados (‘SOS Stolen Babies’) is made up of thousands of people in Spain who either suspect a family member of theirs, or their own child, was stolen at birth, or who believe they may be one of these children. It is thought that Republican parents and unmarried mothers were told by nuns working as midwives that their babies had died during birth, and that these children were then ‘sold’ to couples who could not have children, including many who supported Franco’s stance. Many parents who adopted their children via an agency said they had no idea at the time that the baby had been stolen. As yet, no trial against the perpetrators has been completed, since the first and only person to stand in the dock – the nun known as Sor María, incriminated after mum María Luisa found her 30-year-old daughter Pilar – was in her 80s at the time and died before the case was fully heard.

victim of Bankia preferential shares stabs retired employee in his home
A local Police officer off sick with depression stabbed a retired bank manager who had sold him 300,000 euros of preferential shares which are now worthless. The accused, who is said to have lost everything after investing his life’s savings in the nationalised entity Bankia, went to the former manager’s home, a country house just outside Valencia in an area known as La Punta. He became embroiled in a heated discussion with the victim, which the latter’s wife witnessed, before stabbing him twice in the neck. National Police rushed to the scene at around 18.45hrs on Sunday and found the former Bankia worker bleeding heavily. His
attacker had fled the area but was later arrested. Due to a delay in the ambulance arriving, police officers took the victim to A&E at La Fe hospital in one of their patrol cars, and he had to undergo emergency surgery. Shortly before passing out, the victim managed to give the police a description of the man who had stabbed him. His condition is said to be stable, but doctors do not yet know whether he will have suffered any lasting damage. The victim, who had retired early from his job as bank manager at Bankia, was the one who had sold the Local Police officer the preferential shares at the outset.

ordinary residents’ bills INCREASE DUE TO Tax frauD
Sport
Tax evasion is costing the average Spanish resident around 2,000 euros a year out of their pay-packets, figures show. According to Hacienda, the country’s fiscal authorities, this varies by region from 2,776 in La Rioja to 1,113 in Extremadura, but means a typical inhabitant in Spain sees 1,910 euros a year more coming out of their income than they would if tax avoidance did not occur. Increases in taxes and social security have affected salaried employees the most, says tax office union GESTHA, since these have no way of hiding any of their tax liabilities, unlike self-employed workers or business owners, potentially. Spain has one of the highest tax levels in Europe for the middle class, GESTHA adds, and yet moneylaundering costs the public coffers 90 billion euros a year, or around 20 per cent of the GNP. It claims the ‘excessively-low’ taxes payable in other parts of Europe need to come to an end. To compensate for the wide-scale multi-million frauds occurring in Spain, authorities want to increase Business Tax to 35 per cent for turnover exceeding a million euros a year, a move that could bring in a further 14 billion euros annually.
Amnesty International Slams ‘Police Violence’, Forced Evictions & No Healthcare For Immigrants Amnesty International has condemned the ‘unnecessary violence’ used by riot police during public demonstrations in Spain and the ‘lack of guarantees’ for people whose homes have been repossessed. In its annual report, AI listed six areas where it considered Spain needed to improve its human rights policies. Other entries included antiterrorism measures, racism and domestic violence, but particularly emphasised repossession of homes and ‘aggressiveness’ by police in protest marches as being two areas directly caused by the financial crisis. The report mentioned two cases in point concerning the latter – the death of Ángela Jaramillo from a heart
attack three months after being repeatedly beaten with truncheons by police officers when taking part in a peaceful demonstration, the after-effects of which required medical treatment; and reporter Paloma Aznar, who suffered a serious eye injury after being hit by a rubber bullet fired at her, despite wearing her press identification in a prominent place about her person. Amnesty International referred more generically to riot police hitting, firing rubber bullets at and threatening participants and reporters in a peaceful demonstration in Madrid on September 25. They added that investigations were usually ‘impossible’ because victims were unable to identify the officers who had attacked them by their
numbers, and because they did not have evidence to prove their injuries were inflicted by the police. According to AI, this means the victims of excessive police violence are ‘defenceless’ at law, and that authorities did not carry out ‘full, structured and systematic’ inquiries into such cases. Its report also condemned ‘forced evictions’, both of mortgage defaulters and people living in poverty in shanty towns, which are ‘a long way from complying with international legal guarantees’ stipulated by legislative reforms passed to deal with the effects of the global recession. Spain was ‘not evaluating or dealing with the repercussions’ affecting the human rights of ‘vulnerable sectors of the
Petrol and diesel go up in price per barrel. Brent oil is the most-used in Europe,
Petrol has just gone up by 0.5 per cent and diesel by 0.38 per cent this week. Now at an average cost of 1.412 euros per litre for 95 unleaded, filling up a tank will cost 0.8 per cent more than in January this year. And diesel will cost 2.7 per cent more, at an average cost of 1.329 euros a litre. Prices of petrol only dipped below 1.40 euros a litre once this year – in early May – after having gone down for three weeks in a row. The increase is in response to the rising costs of Brent crude oil, now standing at 101.30 US dollars
and Texas Sweet Light, which has gone up to 92.99 dollars a barrel, is the more commonly employed brand in the USA. Despite the price hikes, petrol still costs less in Spain than the EU average of 1.569 euros a litre, or 1.6904 in the Eurozone. Diesel costs an average of 1.427 euros a litre in the 27 EU member States, or 1.413 euros in the Eurozone. Spain’s cheaper petrol is due to lesser fiscal pressure than in other member States, despite the IVA hike having caused a sharp rise in prices in September.
population’, or offering the legal guarantees of prior consultation and negotiation, compensation in the case of people evicted from shanty towns, and suitable alternative accommodation for all those left homeless. Amnesty International says Spain has made no further efforts in the last two years to address this issue, despite the organisation having warned the government in 2011 that hundreds of thousands of residents were at risk of losing their homes and that nine million people were living in actual poverty with no legal support. Among other issues, AI slammed the fact that victims of domestic violence do not have access to ‘effective remedies’ and ‘face obstacles’ when seeking help, and that foreigners without a residence card or not paying social security were unable to obtain medical treatment via the public health service without paying. “This is not a cutback, it is a violation of human rights,” says Amnesty International. For governments in the European Union, it is more important to them to protect borders than to protect life and health.”

A woman who spent the entire day’s takings of her son’s bar in a fruit machine and tried to cover it up by reporting a break-in has been arrested. The accused, 56, from Artana (Castellón) told the Guardia Civil that two men burst into the bar at around 01.00hrs when she was cleaning the premises and one grabbed her by the neck and punched her, threatening her with a sharp object. She said the other man grabbed a bag containing 200 euros in coins and 600 euros in notes, which was the takings from that day and the day before. But police said her statement was ‘inconsistent’ and that she kept tripping herself up. She finally broke down and confessed that she had invented the story because she was afraid her son would find out she had spent nearly 800 euros on the fruit machine, and having afterwards fallen down the stairs, decided to use her facial injuries as a cover-up, saying they were the result of a violent burglary. The woman has been charged with simulating a crime for financial gain.
current ideological positions are very worrying. In an interview in El País today he stated: ‘Politics is not a closed shop and is a vocation of service in which you have to give everything and receive very little’. He tells the paper, ‘In politics you have to be faithful to what you say and if you can’t do that you should leave, you should not have taken up office’. The El País piece has another headline, ‘The Judicial Power should protect the Gürtel judges from the pressure from the Partido Popular’. Other quotes from the exJudge, ‘The Infanta should have declared voluntarily and helped justice’ ‘I will intend to make the State return to the victims the goods which were plundered by the Franquist’. First reaction in the Internet Polls has been an unanimous welcome and the promise of votes. Quite how Mariano Rajoy and the Partido Popular handle this remains to be seen.
British Twin Brothers Found Dead In Fuengirola Flat
Police in Fuengirola, Málaga, have opened an inquiry into the deaths of elderly British twin brothers in their home. The two men, aged 83, were found after a neighbour reported a foul smell coming from their flat yesterday and called the police. Firefighters had to break down the door to get in. One of the men was in an armchair in the lounge and the other was lying on a bed. They both had plastic bags over their heads and parcel tape over their mouths. A postmortem is due to be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of death. Police are treating it as a suicide pact, but have not ruled out any line of inquiry, including murder. The flat where the bodies were found is on the C/ Federico Ruiz Vertedor in the popular resort town.

Spain announces Premursa confirms further reform of Cajas funding to complete
Earlier this month, Spain announced plans to control the cajas blamed for causing the country’s financial crisis, the latest measure in an overhaul of its bailed-out banking sector. The government launched a bill to restrict the regional savings banks’ lending to individuals and small businesses, it announced after a cabinet meeting. The cajas - which were traditionally regionally based lenders - diversified into property during Spain’s decadelong building boom that went bust in 2008. “What we are trying to do is return to the traditional model of savings banks - a traditional model that somehow got distorted in recent years and was the basis of the problems in the Spanish financial model,” Finance Minister Luis de Guindos announced at a press conference. This is just one of the measures Spain promised to the EU last year in return for tens of billions of euros to save its banking sector from collapse. It plans to limit a savings bank’s assets to 10 billion euros, the Ministry said in a statement detailing the plan. If a caja exceeds that size, it will have to submit its financial activities to more stringent regulation. The plan also aims to place control of the savings banks firmly in the hands of depositors, shielding the boards from political influence. It will set quotas for the proportion of seats on the board held by depositors and demand that board members have financial competence and experience. That was apparently a response to past controversies over the naming of unqualified figures with links to politicians to the boards of the cajas. Dozens of cajas were swallowed up in a mass restructuring of the banking sector following the start of the Spanish crisis. Article: www.tumbit.com
Paramount Murcia
Jesus Samper, the President of Proyectos Emblemáticos Murcianos SA (Premursa) - the promoter and developer of the Paramount theme park at Alhama de Murcia, has claimed he has secured the required investment to complete construction work on the project. According to press sources, Samper went on to confirm he had received firm commitments from investors from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, whist a number of American investment groups had expressed an interest, but were waiting to see how work on the project commenced later this year. Samper was speaking at a press conference, along with Minister of Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz, and the Mayor of Alhama, Alfonso Ceron, to deny rumours questioning the viability Paramount Park, and that Paramount in the USA were giving considering withdrawing their licence, despite expenditure of €36 Million. He also went on to say how he had no concerns over the Paramount Theme Park in London, set to open its doors in 2019, just 4 years after Paramount Murcia. Samper also clarified that training for the staff recruited to work in various departments at the park would commence in 2014. This is despite the fact that a dedicated office to handle their recruitment opened early in 2012. source: La Opinion de Murcia/Tumbit.com

A report published by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) has revealed how a minimum of 176,000 jobseeking Spaniards between the ages of 35-44 have left their country since the start of the protracted financial crisis. The study went on to state how the majority moved to either the UK or Spain, with 29,910 relocating to Germany during 2012 alone - up 45% on 2011. According to a report by Tumbit.com, key destinations for emmigrating Spaniards were Italy (12,000); Greece (10,000) and Portugal (4,000). Some 6,000 Spaniards relocated to the UK, where total numbers are now thought to stand at around 30’000 arrivals since 2008. However, it is difficult to state final and exact number as many Spaniards have kept their official Residential status as being in Spain. One anomaly that has not been answered by the INE is why so many Spaniards - who are suffering the effect of 27.2% unemployment at home - would choose to relocate to Greece with a 26.4% rate of unemployment, when the European average is 10.9% ?

Rajoy Pledges to Cut Taxes by 2015
PM Mariano Rajoy pledged to cut taxes in Spain before the next election, due in 2015, as he forecast a return to growth for the euro area’s 4th-largest economy. “I’m not satisfied in any way with the results we’ve achieved,” Rajoy told a meeting of party officials in Salamanca, Spain, today. “In this legislature we’ll cut taxes. In this legislature there will be economic growth and job creation.” The premier is battling to sustain the morale of the Partido Popular, which has been battered in opinion polls and suffered internal strains over the allocation of spending cuts. The economy is in the 6th year of a slump and unemployment won’t
fall below 25% until 2016, according to government forecasts. “We have set our course,” Rajoy said. “Until there is growth and we start to create jobs, we can’t stop.” Support for the Partido Popular declined in May to 22.5% from 24.5% a month earlier with the Socialists, the largest opposition party, at 20.2%, according to a Metroscopia poll for El Pais newspaper. Last Wednesday marked the second anniversary of Spain’s local elections, where the general public showed their distaste for the then ruling PSOE party, voting overwhelmingly in favour of the PP opposition. A Bar for Every 132 Spaniards
A recent study has revealed on average there is ONE bar for EVERY 132 people resident in Spain. The study, commissioned by Coca Cola, also reveals that the Spanish bar & tapas/client relationship is strong and very much still a part of the culture despite falling sales and closures. A article by Tumbit.com reports that since 2008, more than 50,000 bars and restaurants have closed according to the Spanish Hotel and Restaurant Federation. The sector has seen sales drop more than 22% and over 75,000 are estimated to have been made unemployed. The survey claims the regions of La Rioja and Extremadura have the most bars with an average of 142 and 124 people per bar
respectively. More than 2,000 people participated in the survey, which said two thirds of Spaniards claim to know the name of the waiter in their favourite bar and 30% said that they would trust them enough to give them their house keys. Several said they see their local bar as a symbol of Spanish culture where more than a third visits several times a week and a hardcore 5% visit several times a day. Andalucía and the Basque Country came out on top of the tapas table. The regions were hailed as having the best quality bar snacks by 37% of people surveyed, while the most generous portions were said to be found in Madrid and Galicia.

pause for thought
An acquaintance of mine, retired from the fire service, recently explained how his helmet, so essential for safety in his work, used to help him in his Christian faith. For St Paul, writing to Christians living in Ephesus, used the armour of the Roman soldier, so evident in his day, to illustrate the need for vigilance in living the Christian life as he wrote: Stand firm then, with the belt of truth around your waist, the breastplate of righteousness guarding your chest, and your feet shod with the gospel of peace. In addition to these, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. So yes, the helmet has doubtless saved many a fireman from certain death as beams and masonry collapse around them. The belt to which is strapped their many tools enables them to expose the truth hidden beneath the debris of fire. Breathing apparatus has protected many a chest, allowing firemen confidence to enter smoke-filled rooms; the right boots permit secure movement within a fire, which may be extinguished using the fire-hose. How right then to see the similarity with St Paul’s illustration. And how important that we cover our minds and intelligence with the helmet of salvation, to understand that we can never by our own efforts, save ourselves, but must rely solely on Christ’s sacrificial death on our behalf. How essential too is truth, and how important that we are true, at the very least, to ourselves. And moreover, it’s obvious how beneficial it would be to all around if we could aim, wherever we go, to bring peace rather than discord, and that we protect our whole being with a faith so secure that it isn’t shaken by any challenge, so we have no need for the unfeeling, over-defensive retort. So come on Christians, isn’t it time we put on the whole armour of God and made a stand? All Through the Night, Doo Ron Ron, a Mozart Clarinet Concerto...
Where would you expect to hear all three live and in the same venue? It sounds like a ‘Mastermind’ question but the answer is much easier and closer to home... Cantante has begun its summer season of concerts with an acclaimed performance in Vera’s inspiring Convento de la Victoria on Saturday and over the next couple of weeks will be bringing those three pieces and many more to a venue near you. Cantante was founded, in Zurgena, only two and half years ago by its leader. Julie Hawkins. Since that first performance of Christmas Carols in 2010 the group has grown and developed. There are now more than thirty five members, most of whom thought they couldn’t sing and certainly most couldn’t read music. Now they can do both thanks to Julie’s passionate leadership and Dave Sharp’s friendly and disciplined music lessons. The two of them are superbly supported by Sue Morrison, pianist and gifted accompanist. Why not come and hear Cantante. Share their joy of singing. Join in on the day. Join the group. Fantastic liaison between DAMES IN SPAIN ANIMAL rescue ORGANISATIONS GARDEN PARTY On April 7th a van left for Prinsenbeek in Holland with 42 dogs and puppies aboard. The trip was sponsored by Janny Kroon who runs Stichting Poor Animals, the refuge where the dogs are going. The dogs came from four different local Rescue organizations: Perros Sin Casa, APSA, Puppy Rescue and Animales Almanzora. It is fantastic to hear of local rescues all working together for the benefit of the dogs The trip started at the cemetery in Albox where Diane of APSA loaded her dogs. Second stop near to the Puppy Rescue kennels where dogs from Animales Almanzora and Puppy Rescue were loaded and finally a stop at Hotel Rural in Huércal Overa. All the puppies and dogs from Perros Sin Casa were loaded here plus two more from Puppy Rescue. Some of the small puppies were sharing but all had plenty of
space and water bowls and would be checked regularly during the journey. Unfortunately
abandoned puppies and stray dogs are a constant problem here and all the organisations quickly become full. A trip like this helps create space so that more dogs can be rescued, brought to good health and prepared for homing either here or abroad. All the organisations have a constant battle to raise money especially in this time of financial crisis and they would all like to say Thank you to all their supporters and fund raisers. They are always in need of volunteers for fostering and fundraising and donations for the charity shops so if you would like to help please get in touch.
The Dames in Spain held their Garden Party at the home of Rosy and Ken Wildsmith in Vera and did ir rain! It poured down all day. The Garden Party ended up being a house party, all the stalls were either inside the hourse or on covered terraces but what a successful day. Some people braved the rain to pluck the ducks from the swimming pool, others watched Ken and Vic making the paella whilst others, after spending on the stalls enjoyed the comforts of Gail’s Bar. After lunch, Chairman Myra presented cheques of 1000 euros each to Mojacar and Vera Red Cross. President Gail, presented a gift to Rosy and Ken thanking them for hosting the garden party and for all their hard work in preparing for the day. The Grand Raffle was then drawn with the first prize of a Television, being won by Terry Edwards. A Big thankyou to all who helped on the day and to all who came along and supported us.

Exposure To Artificial Light ‘Fools’ The Brain Into Staying Awake
Electric lights, including those which illuminate laptop computers, smartphones and tablets, often play a key role in causing people to sleep badly, a leading expert has warned. Artificial lights disrupt the body’s natural rhythm, affect chemicals in the brain and drive people to use stimulants like caffeine to stay awake longer, according to Harvard academic Professor Charles Czeisler. The professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School called for research to help develop ‘behavioural and technical’ ways of counteracting the ill effects of artificial light on modern sleeping patterns. The decline in the number of hours slept per night is affecting public health, including a greater risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and stroke in adults and concentration problems in
children, he said. While all electric light affected circadian rhythms the natural body clock - and sleep, night-time exposure to LED lights like those in phones and computers was ‘typically more disruptive’ than standard electric light bulbs, he said. ‘There are many reasons why people get insufficient sleep in our 24/7 society, from early starts at work or school, or long commutes, to caffeinerich food and drink, but the precipitating factor is an often unappreciated, technological breakthrough: the electric light. Without it, few people would use caffeine to stay awake at night. And light affects our circadian rhythms more powerfully than any drug.’ Poor sleep has been linked with health problems including obesity, heart disease and depression Between 1950 and 2000, the average person in the

UK increased their use of artificial light sources by four times, with a parallel rise in sleep deficiency, Prof Czeisler said. Artificial light inhibits sleep-promoting neurons in the brain and the nightly release of the hormone melatonin, which aids sleep, while activating neurons that boost alertness, he said. It fools the brain into delaying its ‘second wind’, which kicked in during the afternoon to see people through to sunset before electric light was invented, until much later in the day. He said that as a result of modern technology ‘many people are still checking email, doing homework or watching TV at midnight, with hardly a clue that it is the middle of the solar night’. In a study, 30 per cent of all working adults in the United States and 44 per cent of night workers reported getting less than six hours sleep a night on average. Fifty years ago less than 3 per cent of the US adult population slept so little. And around the world, children are sleeping 1.2 hours less on school nights than a century ago, he said. ‘Technology has effectively decoupled us from the natural 24-hour day to which our bodies evolved, driving us to go to bed later,’ he said. ‘And we use caffeine in the morning to rise as early as we ever did, putting the squeeze on sleep.’
cancer-fighting Camomile tea!
A cup of camomile tea could help ward off cancer, researchers say. The tea contains a chemical, apigenin, which takes away some of the ‘superpowers’ of cancer cells. Scientists at Ohio State University found apigenin can block the ability of breast cancer cells to live far longer than normal cells, halting their spread and making them more sensitive to drug therapy. Camomile tea, parsley and celery are the most abundant sources of apigenin but it is also found in many fruit and vegetables common in a Mediterranean diet. The chemical, which has also been shown to act as an anti-inflammatory, works in a way that suggests other nutrients could have similar effects in warding off cancer. It helps proteins correct the abnormalities in RNA – molecules carrying genetic information – that are responsible for about 80 per cent of cancers. Molecular geneticist Professor Andrea Doseff, of Ohio State University, said: ‘We know we need to eat healthfully, but in most cases we do not know the actual mechanistic reasons for why we need to do that. ‘We see here the beneficial effect on health is attributed to this dietary nutrient affecting many proteins. In its relationship with a set of specific proteins, apigenin re-establishes the normal profile in cancer cells. We think this can have great value clinically as a potential cancer-prevention strategy.’ Cancer cells thrive by inhibiting a process that would cause them to die on a regular cycle subject to strict programming. The researchers found apigenin could stop breast cancer cells from inhibiting their own death. Much of what is known about the health benefits of nutrients is based on epidemiological studies that show strong positive relationships between eating specific foods and better health outcomes, especially reduced heart disease. But how the actual molecules within these healthy foods work in the body is still a mystery in

many cases, and especially with those linked to lower risk for cancer. The researchers also showed apigenin binds with an estimated 160 proteins in the human body, suggesting other nutrients linked to health benefits called ‘nutraceuticals’ might have similar far reaching effects. In contrast, most pharmaceutical drugs target a single molecule. The researchers likened their technique to ‘fishing’ for the human proteins in cells that interact with small molecules available in the diet. Prof Doseff said: ‘You can imagine all the potentially affected proteins as tiny fishes in a big bowl. We introduce this molecule to the bowl and effectively lure only the truly affected proteins based on structural characteristics that form an attraction. We know this is a real partnership because we can see that the proteins and apigenin bind to each other.’ Experiments established apigenin had relationships with proteins that have three specific functions. Among the most important was one known as hnRNPA2 which influences tiny bits of DNA called mRNA containing the instructions needed to produce a specific protein. Abnormalities in these are responsible for about 80 percent of all cancers. The researchers observed apigenin’s connection to the hnRNPA2 protein restored the function of mRNA to breast cancer cells, suggesting when they are normal cells die in a programmed way, or become more sensitive to chemotherapeutic drugs. Added Prof Doseff: ‘So by applying this nutrient, we can activate that killing machinery.’ The beneficial effects of nutraceuticals are not limited to cancer, as the investigators previously showed that apigenin has antiinflammatory activities. The scientists noted that with its multiple cellular targets, apigenin potentially offers a variety of additional benefits that may even occur over time. Further research is now being undertaken.

Declared ‘Timanfaya’ during the year of 1974, the protected national park located in the southwest region of the island of Lanzarote, is a purely mother-nature created sight. For some six years during the 18th century, this area of land experienced a series of violent volcanic eruptions, in which more than thirty massive explosions of molten lava shook the island, destroying up to eleven settlements. Although the air was filled with thick, black fumes, and entire villages were buried and destroyed under ash and volcanic gravel - known as picón - fortunately and miraculously there were no casualties. The people of these villages deserted their homes early enough to avoid any fatalities this natural disaster could have caused. It was one of these destroyed villages that the Timanfaya name was acquired from, which now - marked by its signature ‘El Diablo’ (The
Devil) entrance sign - flaunts its vast territory to the many tourists, outdoor explorers and geology lovers that visit,. Stretching from the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) out to sea, the park covers approximately 51 square kilometres of ground between the two municipalities of Yaiza and Tinajo. Unguided walking around the park is not permitted due to potential dangers of fragile rocks and unstable lava tubes. Visitors can explore the park by either a forty minute guided El Diablo bus tour, which departs every twenty minutes and offers recorded commentaries in three languages; or by foot
on a three hour walk guided by a park ranger. The walks are the most popular and only held four times a week, therefore pre-bookings are highly encouraged. There is also an option of camel rides through the park too, which departs from near the visitors centre near Mancha Blanca. The glass-walled El Diablo restaurant in the centre of Timanfaya Park hosts spectacular views over the volcanic landscape out towards the sea. Together with its impressive César Manrique-designed barbeque and cast-iron grill, which uses geothermal heat from the ground to cook food, visitors can enjoy a unique and rustic dining experience.

Credits for small companies in Spain may be provided by Germany
Germany may agree to provide ‘special credits’ to small and medium-sized businesses in Spain and Portugal to help them grow, and later to those in Greece. According to German national daily Der Spiegel, the central European country’s equivalent of Spain’s Official Credit Institute – the KfW – is considering investing up to 10 billion euros in small companies and sole traders’ enterprises in the southern EU nations, taking advantage of currently low interest rates. Finance minister for Germany Wolfgang Schäuble (pictured), in a letter to economy minister Philipp Rösler, compared the situation of Spain, Portugal and Greece vis à vis the rest of Europe with that of East and West Germany before the fall of the Berlin Wall. According to Schäuble, many southern European countries are in a similar condition to East Germany – without the communism, but in terms of poverty and financial struggle – and that before the country was united, West Germany used to send aid to its counterparts behind the Iron Curtain. He said companies in crisis-torn European countries would benefit greatly from increased access to capital markets and would be able to create jobs or, at least, by staying afloat, not contribute to the jobless figures. The German finance minister said Spain, Portugal and Greece were ‘in danger of losing an entire generation’.
Non-drinking drivers get 20-euro petrol vouchers
Free petrol for young drivers in the early hours of the morning who can prove they have not drunk any alcohol is being given by Huelva city council in the south-west of Spain.
Numerous checkpoints have been set up around the city to breathalyse drivers and those who show a zero alcohol
reading will be given petrol vouchers.
To sign up to the scheme, they will be given a ‘points card’ upon registering at the city hall and showing their driving licences, and each breathalysing test they undertake which shows a reading of 0.0 will earn them one stamp. They will get a 20-euro Solred petrol
coupon once they have passed four tests with a 0.0 result, but if any readings are higher than these, their points card will be taken off them. This is part of a campaign by local authorities to convince young revellers to take it in turns among their friends to drive and not to drink
Jobseeker who ‘sang’ his CV on the metro taken on by national TV show
An unemployed graduate who ‘sang’ his CV whilst playing the Ukelele on the Barcelona metro has been given a job by Spain’s Channel 6, La Sexta. Enzo Vizcaíno’s performance on the train went viral on YouTube and hit national headlines, after he joked in song about his experience as a community manager – social network administrator for companies – and Ukelele-player. Vizcaíno has a degree in journalism, but has despaired of finding work after months on the dole following redundancy. As a result of the video
he made of himself singing his curriculum vitae, he has been taken on by the national TV station after La Sexta programme Así nos va (‘this is how it’s going for us’) called him to invite him onto the show to talk about the metro experience. Soon after this, the programme, which is presented by Florentino Fernández, employed him as a scriptwriter and contributor. He has now started work with the channel, having gone literally overnight from anonymity and propping up the giro queue in the job centre to being part of a national TV show and an internet sensation after his video clocked up more than half a million hits.

BEING A RESIDENT OF SPAIN OR NOT CAN MAKE A CONSIDERABLE DIFFERENCE TO CAPITAL GAINS TAX. NASTY SURPRISE: HAVING WHAT EVERYONE CALLS THE RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE IS NOT PROOF OF TAX RESIDENCY AND IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WILL BE TREATED AS A NON RESIDENT AND 3% OF THE SALES PRICE WILL BE HELD BACK. Q. I have sold my house. I was under the impression that I was a resident and that the 3% retention for non residents would not be applicable, but the notary said that my residence certificate was not proof of residency and that he had to treat me as a non resident which means that 3% of the sales price was retained and paid into the tax office. How can the resident certificate not be proof of residency? A. What the notary is saying is correct. It is a common nasty surprise at the notary lately suffered by sellers that are not getting the correct advice prior to selling. The new resident certificates with ought photograph issued by the police do not state you are a tax resident of Spain. What it says is that you are a resident of Europe. To be able to be treated as a tax resident of Spain at the moment of sale, you need to provide the notary with a certificate issued by the tax office in Spain stating that they consider you a tax resident of Spain. This needs to be requested in advance of going to the notary by your solicitor or yourself to avoid the 3% retention. Some notaries will also accept as proof of residency your Spanish tax returns. If you are thinking of selling, it is important to find out from the tax office well in advance if your status is that of a resident or non resident, and the certificate issued by them needs to be taken to the notary the day of signature Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. The Albox Branch of The Royal British Legion is pleased to announce its bi-annual Bazaar to be held on Thursday 4th July at La Parrilla Hotel & Restaurant in the main square of Albox. As in times past there will be the ever popular stalls for Poppy Fund, books, cakes, and many more, to include the RBL Tombola stall. The event starts at 10.30 and stalls cost just 5 Euros each. Almanzora Charitable Theatre
After the production of “It’s a Dog’s Life” at the end of last year, ‘Almanzora Charitable Theatre’ is turning its attention from animals back to ‘homo sapiens’. However, in their forthcoming production, scheduled for the beginning of June it is definitely doubtful whether any of the characters portrayed possess much of the ’sapiens’ part of being human. The performances will take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June in Bar Parrilla, Albox and the programme is made up of 2 one-act plays which could perhaps be described as 2 utter debacles. The first, “Costa del Packet” centres around a group of 4 ladies who have booked a holiday at a four star luxury hotel in Mallorca. Unfortunately, their dream of a wonderfully relaxing time in the sun is punctured when they discover that the accommodation on offer is somewhat less salubrious than they had anticipated. The second play, “Strictly Sex Factor ( on Ice )” revolves around the ‘Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society” who are extremely grim to say the least. In their hey-day their audiences hardly ever reached double figures! However, their bombastic, pompous chairman has devised a plan to compete head-on with the TV reality shows that he believes have ravaged their Saturday night audiences. The evening’s entertainment includes a 3 course meal and the proceeds will be domated to MACS (See Main Advert on page 3)

This will involve an initial capital investment of a lower amount than the present minimum of 3,000 euros, with a total of 20 per cent of the profits going into the required capital reserve fund. A ‘second chance’ option may also be included in the draft law, whereby companies with a balance of less than five million euros can go into out-of-court negotiations instead of into receivership, allowing them to obtain a reprieve on up to 25 per cent of the debt and a three-year stay of grace in paying back tax and social security debts. When asked why it had taken the government so long to create the new law, vice-president Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría (pictured) said that the cabinet had been obliged to approve a series of legislative initiatives ‘urgently’ since they had a time-limit for these after winning the general elections in November 2011. She added that the government had agreed to give automatic residence rights to all foreigners who bought properties exceeding 500,000 euros in value – considerably more than the initial 160,000-euro value initially planned – as well as anyone who purchased national debt to the value of two million euros or more, and anyone investing significant amounts in the country, including setting up large companies that would provide new jobs, be in the ‘public interest’, or suppose a contribution to scientific or technological innovation and investigation. Highly-qualified professionals from abroad working for major companies of international renown, new entrants to the country who already have a job offer, and those travelling to Spain for professional training or education will also be given automatic residence.

Garzón appeals to ECHR over his being struck off for Gürtel phone-tapping
A Judge who was struck off for ‘acting outside his jurisdiction’ when investigating a high-profile corruption case has appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Baltasar Garzón took matters into his own hands with the infamous Gürtel case and arranged for telephones of main suspects to be tapped, producing incriminating evidence which is what led to the scandal being uncovered in the very beginning. He says the fact he was banned from practising as a judge as a result was ‘against the Spanish Constitution’, which effectively gives investigating judges total freedom in their related actions. To this end, Garzón says ‘what is not criminal conduct has been considered as such’ and that he has been made into a scapegoat for the ‘poor and inadequate’ laws of Spain. Garzón adds that the ministry of justice and the prosecution service ‘supported’ his actions in tapping the suspects’ telephones and that the verdict against him is therefore ‘contradictory, irrational and arbitrary’. He says he limited himself to ‘complying with his obligations’ as a judge and did not breach any legal regulations, and that to strike him off on the grounds of his investigative procedures would create ‘unacceptable legal insecurity among judges and magistrates’. Finally, he says the magistrates who passed the verdict preventing him from practising again did so by ‘creating a tailor-made criminal offence’, since ‘there is no law in Spain preventing or regulating telephone-tapping’.
Penal Court Number 3 has given a three year and two month sentence to both the owners of a pub in Valverde del Camino, Huelva. The two have been found guilty of causing acoustic contamination, and in addition both will have to pay a 3,800 Euro fine, and compensation of 7,000 Euros for the neighbours somatic and psychic disorders. The court considered it proved that the neighbours suffered acoustic contamination from 2008 to May 2010 from the pub next door. The sentence notices that the pub owners used an improper sound limiter. Article: Howard Brereton - Typically Spanish
More than 80 families have benefited so far from the housing decree issued by the Junta de Andalucía
More than 80 families have benefited so far from the housing decree issued by the Junta de Andalucía which gives those evicted the chance to live in empty property owned by the banks. In a report by Typically Spanish, it appears they can use the property for five years, and while they are there the Junta will pay the bank a small rent. Manuel García Peláez, Andalucía Councillor for Development and Housing, has said that 53 municipalities in Málaga province had signed an agreement to move ahead with the decree.
Three dead and one critical in light aircraft crash
Two men and a woman have died in a light aircraft crash and the pilot is in a critical condition in hospital. The plane, a singleengine Cesna 172 owned by the company Aviation Centre, went down in an area of scrubland near Marratxí (Mallorca), killing two men aged 22 and 36, and a woman aged 36. Emergency services say the pilot, 22, is seriously injured and has been taken to the Son Espases hospital in Palma after having been attended to at the scene. Firefighters were called out to deal with the blaze which flared up when the plane hit the ground, and one of the firemen and a bystander suffered minor burns when attempting to help. A full investigation is under way as to the exact causes of the crash.

Jamie Oliver is our favourite TV chef Delia is deemed out-of-date and Nigella is making us fat!
His cheeky smile and carefree approach to cooking won the nation over when he hit our screens 15 years ago. And it seems Jamie Oliver still has our hearts today. According to a report by Mail Online, ‘The Naked Chef’ has been voted Britain’s favourite celebrity chef in a new survey, as well as the cook whose recipes we find easiest to follow at home. The survey also shows that Britons feel long time culinary queen and television staple Delia Smith is out of date, and that the famously sultry Nigella Lawson makes us fat. Jamie Oliver, 37, was picked as our number one by almost a fifth (23 per cent) of those polled - with Gordon Ramsay second (16 per cent) and Nigella Lawson third (11 per cent). The least popular was Masterchef’s John Torode, picked by just one per cent of the 1,000 people polled by diet firm Forza Supplements. Surprisingly, the nation’s cookery queen Delia came second bottom with just two per cent of votes. Delia, 71, was also the chef voted most out of date - chosen by more than quarter of respondents (26 per cent), as being increasingly past her sell by date. Foul mouthed dynamo Gordon Ramsay was almost deemed by respondents to be outstaying his welcome on our TV screens with 12 per cent of the vote with the Hairy Bikers coming third (10 per cent). When it comes to actually picking up the spatula and heading into the kitchen ourselves, the nation’s foodies reckon that Jamie Oliver’s recipes are the easiest to follow - with 57 per cent saying his were the most reliable. Delia came second for reliability (14 per cent) and Nigella Lawson third (8 per cent). Unsurprisingly Heston Blumenthal, who is famous for his complicated and intricate recipes such as snail porridge, came bottom
with just one per cent of the votes. One of the most interesting findings is that people feel that if you cook Nigella Lawson’s recipes you are likely to have the most fun but also most likely to pile on the pounds. It is to be expected that people fear eating the famously voluptuous chefs food will wreak havoc with your waistline. The BBC2 star’s chocolate hazelnut cheesecake, featured on her TV show Nigellissima, famously contains more than 7,000 calories. She was chosen as the most calorific chef by 49 per cent of those polled - beating the Hairy Bikers (11 per cent) and Delia Smith (9 per cent). But it’s not just eating Ms Lawson’s recipes that is why we blame her for piling on the pounds. The kitchen temptress, Nigella also makes us hungriest when we watch her shows - chosen by 31 per cent, ahead of Jamie Oliver on 30 per cent and Gordon Ramsay (10 per cent) . Managing director of Forza, who commissioned the survey said: ‘I think Jamie won the poll because of the success of his cook books. ‘Virtually all of us have got one of his books in our homes and any idiot can follow the instructions. ‘It is interesting that Delia has gone so quickly from the being the nation’s favourite to being such a turn off. ‘We are learning to love food more and become a bit more ambitious with our cooking. It’s why so many of us are overweight. ‘The days of Delia telling us all how to boil an egg are long gone. It’s why Nigella is so popular. She has put the sex back into cooking. ‘She’ll make us all fat - but we don’t care because we are having so much fun.’

Barely a week after Spain was shown to be the dominant country in “Restaurant” magazine’s list of top 50 Restaurants in the World, a new report has shown how “Food Tourism” is becoming a more and more important sector for the industry. The latest statistics from Spain’s tourism office show that the country’s Food was thought to be a key attraction for as many as 5.6 Million visitors last year - an increase of 4% on 2011. Estimated expenditure on food and wine was placed at €6.4 million - representing a 10% increase on 2011. In a report by Tumbit.com, according to a survey by the Institute of Tourism Studies or IET, the wine-making region of La Rioja received top marks by international tourists for its gastronomy, followed by Asturias, Extremadura and Navarra in 2010. This follows further news this weekend which revealed how “Healthcare Tourism” has also been seen to become a more important niche for the tourism industry over recent years.

If I were a garden, I wouldn’t want to be our garden. It lives life on the edge, exposed to the burning ardour of the sun and the ferocious caresses of the west wind, with the plants heroically seeking to draw sustenance from the bedrock that passes for soil. However, in the last month it has managed to rain twice, or maybe three times. Everything in the garden responded with gusto, including the weeds, to which I responded with weedkiller. But when I took our trusty sprayer from its winter hibernation, I discovered that it had become a sprayer in name only – its once virile squirt had become no more than a pathetic piddle. The fearsome wand that once dealt death was now reduced to a limp parody of its former might. To restore its flow required an operation, and confident that sprayers do not have a prostate gland nor need anaesthetics I donned my surgeon’s mask, scrubbed up and made the first incision – or rather, I dismantled the whole thing! The anatomy of a sprayer is simple, and within my understanding, josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk but even so

viewpoint alqueria - The Democratic Process I was careful to keep all the pieces tidily in order on the operating table, which was in fact Pete’s work bench. I did not want to put it all together again and find one piece left over, or that I had put it together wrong, thus creating a Frankenstein’s monster, which might subsequently turn on me before running amok and devastating every living thing in the village. I meticulously cleaned and checked each part for vital function. I even deployed a specialist tool (a bent safety pin) to clean out the little hole in the end of the wand. Then I re-assembled it, filled it with water, pumped up the pressure and pressed the trigger. Its response was immediate – a perfect circle of fine spray! Without further ado I mixed up the weedkiller and sallied forth, death on my mind and at my trigger finger. Weedkilling by sprayer is gardening made easy – no bending, no kneeling, no broken fingernails, no scrabbling around after the last remnant of root. It is a variation on Lock and Load, it is Pump and Press. I quartered the garden with a stealthy tread, my finger on the trigger, every sense tuned to Weed Alert. The instant I spied an unwelcome alien, I lined it up within the cross-hairs of my sight, and fired. I spared none, there was no escaping my eagle eye, nor evading my lightning draw and dead-eye aim. I was the Quick-Draw McGraw of the pressure sprayer!
Expert Advice – Take it with a Pinch of Salt
Most people profess to have a genuine desire to maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating the correct foods. There is it seems, much truth in the oft used maxim – We are what we eat. There is of course a vast difference between having the aspirations to do the right thing and actually doing something tangible about it. The number of fast food establishments and the huge range of processed food and drinks available in supermarkets, gives a strong indication that the spirit might be willing with many of us, but the ever expanding flesh around the waistline is weak. But even with the most dedicated health freaks, it is no easy task to recognise just what is good and what is detrimental to our well being and once again this is all down to those frizzy haired scientists, who spend their working days shuffling around the laboratory in their baggy knitted jumpers and sandals, trying to find new ways to confuse us. Just when you think you have it cracked in the dietary
department, out comes another report telling us that what we had hitherto been told about the health benefits from this food or that, is now a load of old horlicks and moreover, is doing us great harm. I came to the conclusion a long time ago, that my reasoning when deciding which foods to embrace or to give the boot, should be – If in doubt, think natural. I have always loved that simple food, the egg. Fried, boiled, poached scrambled, it doesn’t matter, where would we be without them and just ask my wife who it is that makes the best omelettes around . . . no, not Jamie Oliver . . . me! There was a time when I made an effort to cut down on the number of eggs I ate in a week because, we were told, eggs are high in cholesterol and should be consumed in moderation. I have looked at the information available and who am I to disbelieve it, but equally important are the other foods we select for our daily needs to go along with them. It’s the same with butter. I simply love the stuff. Nevertheless I was gradually persuaded to give up this fatsaturated poison for the health giving benefits of vegetable oil spreads of one brand or another. Although I was forced to believe the hype that this
By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com
would make me a leaner, more robust individual able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, there is no advertising executive alive who was ever going to convince me that it tastes like the real thing. Can’t believe it’s not butter? I bloody well can! And then we had the new miracle additive; the ingredient that not only guarded against heart attacks, strokes, Nile Fever and ingrown toenails, but actually reduced cholesterol in the blood – at least according to Gloria Hunniford in the TV ads. Methuselah will have nothing on me I thought. I will eat five kilos a day and live forever. But then twelve months ago, having endured the misery of consuming this bland sludge over several years, and observed the manufacturing process and the dirty grey colour of most low fat spreads before the yellow dye is added; I made a conscious decision to return to my old favourite – good English slightly salted butter. Okay, it is rich in saturated fats – I have to accept that but hey, if I use a little restraint and common sense, what harm can it do. A little bit of what you fancy does you good, is another maxim that rings true to me. I’m full of maxims. Then in February, another report came out, announcing that perhaps butter was not
the villain it had been made out to be after all and that in fact, some saturated fat was advantageous to good health. I saw this as vindication for my stance on the subject and did back flips around my living room; but soon stopped when I began to wheeze and require oxygen. In fairness, the report also stressed the need for the blend of saturated and unsaturated fats including an intake of the necessary Omega 3 and 6 fats for good health. In other words, it all comes back to what most of us know but fail to practice often enough – that balance and moderation are the key factors. Common sense is the one sure ingredient to maximise on prolonged good health, but common sense as I am always banging on about, seems to be an endangered commodity in 2013. And isn’t it sensible to eat everything containing preservatives? Because if they can give your bread, cakes and soft drinks long life, then surely they will do the same for you. Stands to reason...

Of the seven hundred and eighty-five souls that comprise the population of Alqueria one hundred and fifty-seven are below eighteen and therefore not eligible to vote. Nor are they eligible to run for President. The remaining six hundred and twenty-eight are however and they did. Every person over the age of eighteen registered as a candidate for the post of President. This included the bedridden, the indifferent and the illiterate. Those who couldn’t normally string three words together eloquently and accurately completed the necessary documentation. The agoraphobic and infirm managed to negotiate the streets and byways of Alqueria to appear before the Electoral Qualifying Committee. Campaigning took on a surrealism understood only in Alqueria. Regiments of would-be politicians mounted on soap, fruit and Remitroot boxes promoted xenophobic, ill considered and totally impractical policies. The British Conservative Party looked on in envy. The prospective candidates engaged in a strange game. Stacking boxes upon boxes they tried to stand head and shoulders above their rivals. Collapses occurred frequently with untidy heaps of writhing would-be politicians becoming a frequent sight in the Pueblo. The sound of massed political doctrines being propounded resonated through the streets of Alqueria. The ballot paper resembled the cast list from the Soviet version of ‘War and Peace’. The parties represented, ranged from the ridiculous to the plain daft. One candidate stood on the ‘free roller-skates for over eighties’ ticket while another wanted ‘Abyssinian Goat Shirling’ legalised. On election day the turn out was one-hundred percent, the sight of so many exercising their constitutional right to elect a head-ofstate, a privilege not afforded in some western democracies was uplifting. No-one could fail to be stirred by the sight, not shaken perhaps but certainly stirred. Counting was quick and predictable. One vote for each candidate apart from Loco Paco. Paco became so confused by the catalogue of names on the ballot paper he put his cross by the printers name. Inky Pedro the printer, lived happily in Madrid unaware of the fickle ballot paper of fate. He was naturally surprised when the letter dropped on his mat naming him as joint President of Alqueria. He changed his name, donned dark glasses and hid in the roof space peering through the slates like a cornered lynx. Loco Paco became the only constituent in the village with six hundred and twenty-seven people to represent him. A two party system tends towards democracy while any more can see a candidate elected even though the majority of votes are for others. The Alquerian result became much debated, held by radical idealists as a model for the future but by everyone else as ruddy ridiculous. Perhaps Alqueria’s electoral process needs some tinkering?

SOLTIMES MAY 2013
As promised, Today we will find ways of making sure that information that has been deleted is truly “gone”! Last time we looked at the way the Disk stores the information, the weaknesses within the design and the ways in which this information can be recovered. Today, we will look at the methods and programs, that will IRREVOCABLY remove all recoverable traces of information. We have looked at how your information is stored to the disk and how, with expertise and patience, we can retrieve it again. So, we need a little revision before we move on. All information is overwritten, either in part or completely, at some time or other. There is usually enough information left to be able to re-create the original information, either, completely or partially. Ever since “secrecy” was introduced into the use of computers, there has been a need to completely remove all traces of sensitive information. In “day’s gone by”, you might have burned the piece of paper then spread the ashes to the four winds, possibly ate it or found some way to completely destroy the information. As we have seen it isn’t quite as easy with computerised storage, but there is a method that will produce a result similar the “good old fashioned” way. We have seen that if you over-write your file it becomes far more difficult to recover. So, what if you deliberately write and re-write over the same information a number of times. This would make it even more difficult to get the original back! How do we check that the process is working? What if we used a pre-defined pattern of information, for example, overwrite with a string of “0’s”? We could then read and check that they had been written! Now change the string to “trev you are a totally awesome” or some such non-sense, write it and then read it to check that it is written properly. Using this method it would be possible to achieve complete anonymity. There are a number of wipe options that are commonly in use for a secure wipe. Option 1 is the longest and most thorough is a method that overwrites the information 35 times. Option 2 is a US government recommended wipe that uses 7 re-writes. This doesn’t take as long (hours instead of days!) with almost the same security (almost impossible to recover anything) as the 35 re-writes. Option 3. Also US government but only 3 rewrites. This method is great for destroying your information and also for “Once a month” cleaning of the “unused” space on the disk. Option 4. Is the quick wipe of the PseudoRandom one pass and even with most recovery programs it will be impossible to recover. Fortunately, none of us have to be a computer genius, to be able to do this as there are a number of programs “out there” that will do it for you. The one I use is called “Eraser” and can be found at; “http://eraser.heidi. ie/”. I have used this program for years and never been able to recover anything that has been overwritten more than 3 times! It is free (now there is a surprise!) and does what it says on the tin. If you choose to try it the rest of this article will help you set it up! When it has been installed, you will see a window that has a menu bar (at the top). Click on “Edit” → “Preferences” → “Erasing”. On the tab marked “Files” you will see all the wipe options that are available to you. I use the 3 rewrite wipe to balance speed and security. This is my “day to day” file wipe choice. Now if you look again at the tabs the other one is marked “Unused Disk Space”. This is the once a month or twice a year option and should be a good, leave it all night, clean. My choice is the 7 rewrite US government wipe. Leave all the other boxes as they are and press OK. Now you are set-up and ready to go. Have fun playing with the program but beware – once the file is gone, it is gone! La Vida Fayre is on Thursday 30th and I will be there to provide answers and solutions to your computing problems. See you there!

Rosalind’s Sister by Tara Scott-Page “I am everything you ever feared in your life. Someone would pay one way or another for the filth and humiliation suffered. Bitter Sweet Revenge.” Rosalind McKinley is a tough 28 year old cookie, ambitious and extremely determined to leave her unhappy past well and truly behind her in Indiana and an abusive, sexist lout of a father unwittingly following in sister Shirley’s footsteps who had long since escaped this drudgery. Both girls carry a family portrait, sentimentally showing two young girls standing in a park, one 5 years of age the older one, 15. A lifelong bond and inevitably, essential to the plot and the thriller element of this story. Will they meet up and be reunited? Rosalind undergoes a dramatic transformation; a new persona emerges with “a tinge of quality for a woman of obvious quality.” Leonora Carrington-Jones’ love affair with Manhattan, New York begins at the salubrious Carlisle hotel, synonymous with wealth and power, working for Madame Durand. Our girl aspires towards grasping this opportunity firmly in both arms, embracing wonderful opportunities through fair or foul means. She can exploit opportunities and manipulate her men to suit her needs. Her own shot in the power stakes? “There was money to be extracted from the silk lined pockets of the rich and famous today and she wanted her fair share.” It is 1976 and Leonora has this vision of being a hair stylist to the stars and lover to one or two British lords or realistically, their athletically suitable sons. So, what is missing from the life of this successfully popular stylist? A handsomely wealthy, eligible bachelor perhaps? Or even a married man? Not just anyone. Leonora craved the powerful and wealthy. And as luck would have it, the most beautiful man she had ever seen enters her life and sweeps her off her feet. Powerful yes, wealthy yes but also married. The wrong type? The dangerous type. Like playing with fire. Hareb bin Aziz al Hareb, a Saudi Prince is a man of considerable substance and looks a million dollars. Leonora was completely absorbed by the near hypnotic quality of his deep dark brown eyes and the whirlwind of a passionate love affair is kindled.
But fire burns and it can easily destroy. His stay in New York is for business and once he returns to the Middle East a love-sick, forlorn Leonora agrees to meet him in Dubai, excited by the formulaic smells of the orient with its spices, exotic fruits and the salty sea air. Atmospheric and exhilarating. Our heroine fantasizes over her dream man appearing in the misty distance mounted on his white Arab stallion on a mission to whisk her up and away to his tented, desert palace of love. Full of anticipation and excitement like the fairy tales. But reality and fantasy are poles apart and pigs don’t fly so poor Leonora becomes enmeshed in a poisonous web of deceit, lies and more abuse. How can love turn so sour, transform dreams of love to ones of despair? Survival meant letting go of her dreams and her dream man. In spite of her betrayal and distress she holds on to a thread of hope that they would indeed ride off in to a desert sunset together. Dream on naïve one. Ironically salvation in the form of Susan aids the mentally battered, bruised, physically nauseous and disillusioned Leonora, fighting for her life, for her survival in an alien world where females are powerless and exploited for the pleasures of men. A long way from home, almost friendless and alone and isolated. Easy prey. But some women are made of stronger mettle and can look danger in the eyes without flinching and seek retribution such as an eye for an eye without suffering the pangs of guilt. Even murder. Amidst this erotic tale of love and despair, Rosalind’s sister fits in there somewhere but that’s something you’ll have to work out for yourself. before I left I got a text from my mother saying ‘bring warm clothes and it’s raining too!’ Just the sort of unwelcome travel advice anybody dreads. A quick look on a weather forecasting website confirmed that Britain was scheduled to be under feet of snow with a hurricane and biblical flood thrown in for good measure. Landing at Gatwick it was cats and dogs and the mercury was in single digits. Yet within a few hours the sun was shining and apart from a brief hail storm and a cloudy day the forecasters certainly screwed it up in my favour. Designers, like writers, crave inspiration and a desire to stand out from the crowd. For all the right reasons, too. So what on earth is the poor designer to do when confronted with a request to introduce a new luxury mid-range family hatchback into, what many may consider to be a saturated marketplace? A marketplace flooded with Volkswagens, BMWs and Audis. Not only look to the competition but draw on the past, all the while looking to the future. And that partly helps to explain the new Volvo V40. This is the second generation model because its predecessor was launched in 1996, manufactured until 2004. My uncle was the proud owner of one of these, until he hit a deer while travelling at speed on the motorway. He was lucky to be alive but then he was driving a Volvo, renowned for its safety features. Looking back at the original V40 it followed a long line of Volvos of that era with their slightly rounded edges, the manufacturer slowly breaking away from its trademark straight lines of the ‘80s. There were a lot of curves on earlier models and in common with many manufacturers these are being revisited with today’s offerings. The Swedish manufacturer has always offered something slightly different and the new V40 continues along this road. It can be easily recognised as a modern Volvo, sharing much in common with its larger brothers. But there is no doubt that while the brand has resurrected the V40, the model we have before us shares nothing in common with its ancestor, apart from the distinctive Volvo emblem of course and its flawless safety record. Today’s V40 is clean, fast and perhaps most interestingly of all, a hatchback. The original V40 was offered in either saloon or estate variants. For me, an important test currently, is whether a car has a large enough boot to carry a cumbersome tandem pushchair. It’s not a fair test by any means but one that is necessary in the current state of the Saunders family made up of two little rascals of two years old and a little over two months. Harriett, our eldest despises the very thought of having to sit in the front of the pushchair but eventually gives in after a long day’s walking. Heidi is perfectly happy sleeping all day long. Anyway, you can see the necessity. A great many vehicles have boots that do not allow for such a large item. I thought the Volvo was going to join them and after a few attempts, I was about to give up when I decided to push the split fold rear seats down. This allowed me to manoeuvre this bulky, awkward item into position and to my surprise and delight, I was then able to pull it back into the boot. The boot is just wide enough to accommodate the length of the pushchair as you can see from the video at testdrives.biz. The parcel shelf has to be removed, though. This extremely tight fit means that

suffering from the effects of last year’s storms. Unlike the flatter sand banks the river mud is still in the holes. Oh well we will just have to await the tuna run. ‘Pugwash Pete’ took mates Andy and Russ out last week. They braved the conditions which was quite difficult to say the least. They managed to catch plenty of good sized mackerel up to about 2lbs. The bottom was plagued with the usual bait robbers, pickerels and weavers so they mainly fished mid water where apart from mackerel they also had a few small red snappers and pandoras. ‘Blisters Steve’ and I went out with skipper ‘Orca Steve’ and we were joined by Frank and Mike. We headed for the area in front of the Repsol garage and drifted from 40 to 120 feet. Just the usual bait robbers except for one plate size red snapper. Steve B.S. hooked into a big conger in about 120 feet just on top of a 1000 foot hole. His light tackle didn’t have much chance and in the end the
fish bit him off. The rest of us were immediately waiting for a take but it didn’t come, maybe the conger was upset by the lead weight it now had to get rid of. Trolling in and out of the harbour produced nothing so we still await the arrival of the tuna. Something must be happening though as a few Spanish boats were trolling which they haven’t done for months. Coarse Fishing. ‘Bryan V’ caught a zander when he was fishing the River Ebro last week for carp and cats, I think it was his first zander, apparently it tasted fantastic. I have eaten them before and to me considering they are a freshwater fish I was surprised just how much like cod they taste. ‘Puentes Ray’ made an early start to Puentes and was at the lake for 7am. Conditions were excellent, water calm; sun just coming up, weather warm and lots of fish rolling. Ray set up in his favourite spot, the water

golf tournament, before the sun broke through to provide nigh on perfect golfing conditions. Players from Germany,
is still dropping. He tackled up an old Shakespeare President 13 foot match rod which he has had for about 30 years, it has lovely soft action with spliced tip. He fished a waggler on a ledge in about 10 foot of water with 10lb main line and 8lb bottom to Kamasan B911 barbless hook and single sweetcorn. He fished about 1 rod length out and ground baited with his new ground bait mix which contained Horlicks. (Hoped it would not send them to sleep) He was into a carp about 2lb within minutes, lots more followed for about the next 2 hours by which time he decided to try for a barbel and so changed the bait to a halibut pellet on a band. First take arrived after about 10 minutes and his reel screamed off about 50yds of line. Unfortunately he could not turn the fish and after about a ten minute fight the line snapped. He continued to fish with the pellet and landed 4 small barbel, the biggest about 2lb. Fish kept
on coming throughout the day and he stopped counting after 40. The wind got up about 4pm so ray decided to call it a day. He reckons he had about 70-80lb in total for the day and was pleased with the results. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. The weather and the course were perfect, but even these conditions failed to produce a really good score. The winner, playing off 10, Derek Adgey scored 32 points winning by 4 points from Nick Pogson on 28 with Ralph Hunter in 3rd on 26 points. Rocket Ron and John Ball each had a nearest the pin on holes 17 and 2 respectively. Roger( The Dodger) Kaye had an indifferent day mainly caused by his head being in a different time zone to his swing. Christine Dow was the leading lady player with 23 points (actually she was the only lady player) well done Christine. Terry Caddick maintains his poor form only scoring 23 points, one suggestion from a helpful member was that Terry would enjoy his day
more if he left his clubs at home and walked the round with his dog ( hardly helpful I thought). Just a quick note to tell you that the Victron Multiplus Solar System is working really well. We have been more than pleased with the service that Ecocorp has given us during, and since, the installation of the inverter, its solar panels and batteries. It is so refreshing to deal with a company that “does what it says on the tin”, and it is also clear to us that customer care is a high priority for Ecocorp. This is obvious in the way you are unafraid to make regular follow up phone calls to ensure we, your customers, are happy and not sitting small niggles. You and your staff have responded quickly and very helpfully on the occasions when we have called or sent an e-mail, regardless of time, or day of the week.
