SOLTIMES JULY 2013

International Monetary Fund tells Spain to relax credit rules Spain has been strongly advised by the International Monetary Fund (FMI) to lift its restrictions on credit to small businesses and potential property-owners in a bid to aid economic recovery. The global entity, led by Christine Lagarde, has called for Spain’s banks to restrict dividend payments in cash to its shareholders only, to build up their capital, and to ensure finance ‘flows in the national economy’ to help businesses recover and individuals buy from the massive stock of unoccupied properties Spain has on

its books at rock-bottom prices. Experts say the housing market will not pick up until the hundreds of thousands of unsold homes – both new builds that have never been lived in and repossessions – are purchased, since they are up for sale at prices vastly lower than even 10 years ago. But would-be buyers need mortgages, and companies seeking to invest in property also need loans to be able to do so, says the FMI. The board, whilst carrying out its third analysis of Spain’s

financial reform, says lack of available credit is sinking the country’s economy. And they recommend paying part of staff’s wages or bonuses in shares, since this will encourage them to work actively for the success of the business. Additionally, the FMI says banks should be made to bear their own costs of their shares having plummeted, rather than expecting shareholders to lose most of their investment. It has praised plans within the financial reform to ensure suppliers are paid off as

Insect plagues ‘rife’ this summer due to wet spring

Late spring rain means more mosquitoes, flies, wasps and cockroaches around this summer, according to Rentokil. These unpleasant creatures are always rife at this time of year since it is the height of their annual biological cycle, but around 30 per cent more than usual are expected across Spain over the next few months, the firm claims. Rainfall in May and June has left numerous water pockets in marshlands, which is where such insects tend to nest and produce their larvae. And town councils have cut back on their budgets for pest control, particularly rats and cockroaches, due to the financial crisis, Rentokil explains. The company says local governments have not invested enough to keep swarms of insects and rodents at bay. Cockroaches are set to produce the worst pest problem, say experts. These live in drainpipes, which is how they manage to get into houses and other buildings, meaning the best way to keep them out is to seal off any holes that lead to downpipes. Three main types of cockroach exist in southern Europe – the main one, curiously, called the American Cockroach which is large and reddish in colour and highly prevalent in Mediterranean countries. The ‘Oriental’ cockroach is black in colour and the third type is known as the ‘Germanic’, or ‘coffee cockroach’ since they are most typically found in bars, restaurants and cafés as they work their way into coffee machines. Spain has around 1,700 pest control companies, most of which are small firms, and have a total turnover of around 150 million euros a year.

quickly as possible, since this will improve their solvency. All banks undergoing the capital ‘stress test’ have shown their asset levels exceed the minimum required – nine per cent, says the FMI. They conclude by saying the Spanish economy will shrink by a further 1.6 per cent this year and will stay on an even keel next year, with zero growth but no reduction.

Search number seven for Marta del Castillo’s body

Yet another search for the body of murdered Sevilla teenager Marta del Castillo Casanueva has started after her self-confessed killer and ex-boyfriend Miguel Carcaño gave a seventh location where he claimed to have dumped his victim. Again in the village of La Rinconada, just outside the city, around 30 National Police officers equipped with georadars are combing the farm area known as Majaloba. Until now, sites of Marta’s possible location included the river Guadalquivir and a landfill site in the outskirts of Sevilla, both of which – along with four other places – have turned out not to be the 17-year-old’s final resting place. The search in Majaloba – near a maize filed off the La Rinconada-Sevilla road – started at 07.00hrs this morning (Monday) and Marta’s father, Antonio del Castillo, was present. Police say they are not going to dig up the area unless the geo-radar results – and reports from the helicopter with a geo-thermal detector – reveal any anomalies, given that the regional government of Andalucía has already spent close on half a million euros in fruitless searches since Marta was killed in January 2009 by her former partner, who was then 20. Officers say they hope this will be the

The latest site was given as Marta’s definitive location after Carcaño, serving a 20-year jail sentence - reduced from the 52 years the prosecution originally sought – changed his story and claimed his elder stepbrother Francisco Javier Delgado killed Marta with a blow to the head from a gun, a version Delgado has denied. Carcaño’s original story was that after he met with his ex-girlfriend at her request to discuss ‘rumours’ he was reportedly spreading about her, they ended up arguing and he threw an ashtray at her,

knocking her unconscious and, fearing her dead, panicked and threw her in the Guadalquivir river with the help of Delgado and two 15-year-olds, Samuel Benítez and Javier ‘El Cuco’. It later came out Marta was gangraped while held down and strangled, although various other versions as to how the youngster met her demise mean that unless and until her body is ever found and forensic evidence can be taken, the truth may never come out.

Gibraltar celebrates 300 years of British reign

...but Spain still wants it back! British sovereignty of Gibraltar is now 300 years old and the ongoing tugof-war between the UK and Spain over the Rock has never relented in that time. Three centuries ago on Saturday – on July 13, 1713 – the Treaty of Utrecht was signed in which the Kingdom of Spain ceded Gibraltar to Great Britain, a move that the Spanish authorities still call today ‘an historic mistake’. In a report by ThinkSpain. com, Spain wants the Rock to be returned to its Crown and form part of the southern region of Andalucía, as it was 300 years ago when Article 10 of the Treaty was signed to end the Spanish War of Secession – nine years after the tiny 5.5-square-kilometre enclave was conquered and occupied by Anglo-Dutch forces. Back then, taking over the Rock gave the UK and Holland a strategic point for setting up military bases and maintaining control over trading routes by sea – and in fact, a Naval base remains there today.

The same Treaty of Utrecht also ceded other Spanish territories to Great Britain in order to end the War, notably the island of Menorca – although this was handed back to Spain by the Brits in 1802. But the UK has always insisted on hanging onto Gibraltar, which is its only remaining European colony. Mayor of Algeciras (Cádiz), the province which the Rock would rightfully belong to if Spain claimed it back, José Ignacio Landaluce, says the Spanish government will ‘not relent in its efforts’ to reclaim Gibraltar and adds that the country has the support of United Nations in this respect. But the Gibraltarians have other ideas. Their prime minister, Fabián Picardo, has always said since taking up office 18 months ago that he will ‘never’ hand the Rock over to Spain – ‘not a single grain of sand or drop of water of it’. Indeed, mid-20th century

dictator General Franco went all out to claim back the British outpost on the southern tip of Spain, leading to a diplomatic crisis in 1940 – the year after the Civil War ended – with the UK. This led to the latter building a fence staffed with border guards in 1969 which was referred to as an ‘Anglo-Spanish Berlin Wall’ and remained in place until the socialist government of Felipe González ordered the fence be opened to pedestrians in 1982 and to vehicles and trade in 1984. The new freedom of movement between the Rock and mainland Spain means that some 7,000 people living in the latter – Spaniards and British citizens in the main – commute daily across the border to the Rock for work. Photograph: Gibraltar high street Despite the nose-to-tail queues at customs every morning and evening, those who live and work in

Gibraltar want the Rock to stay British. Residents there celebrated the third centenary of UK sovereignty on Saturday, wearing traditional British costume and flying the Union Jack. And they have many practical, as well as historic and patriotic, reasons for wanting Gibraltar to remain a self-governing territory owned by Britain. Unemployment in Gibraltar is just three per cent, compared to 26.9 per cent in Spain and 36.8 per cent

in Andalucía, the region the Rock would join if Spain claimed it back. And the average income per head in Gibraltar is more than double that of Spain, and three times that of Andalucía. Based upon records gathered by the National Institute of Statistics in 2012, the GNP per capita in Spain is 30,000 US dollars, in Andalucía it is 21,000 dollars and in Gibraltar, 63,000 dollars. British citizens who visit Gibraltar are met with an

extremely familiar landscape – pubs call ‘time’ at 23.00hrs and shut at 23.30hrs, a branch of Morrison’s supermarket is located just over the border and the high street is home to a Royal Mail office, Marks & Spencer, WHSmith, The Carphone Warehouse, and clothing chains such as Top Shop and Oasis. Many British expatriates living in Cádiz or on the Costa del Sol travel regularly to Gibraltar to shop for goods from ‘home’ which they cannot, or would prefer not to, do without.

El Mundo: PP ‘attempted to make a deal with Bárcenas’ to stop him speaking out

Fresh revelations from Spanish national daily newspaper El Mundo claim the PP tried to strike a deal with its former treasurer Luis Bárcenas so that he would stay silent over the alleged cash-in-hand wage top-ups and illegal financing of the party. ThinkSpain reports, hot on the heels of the broadsheet’s publishing text messages between Bárcenas and Spanish president Mariano Rajoy between May 2011 and March this year, the latest leak has sparked outrage from the general public, the opposition and the media. According to El Mundo’s article, Bárcenas’ successor – ex-treasurer Álvaro Lapuerta – spoke to him ‘in representation of the PP party’ via the latter’s solicitor, Javier Iglesias, to convince him not to drop the current reigning government in it. After Bárcenas had been remanded in custody, Lapuerta reportedly said to him: “If you say anything, your wife will go to prison. If you keep quiet, Gallardón will leave and the case will be thrown out.” He was referring to justice minister Alberto RuizGallardón (pictured below right), hinting that he would be discreetly ‘let go of’ if Bárcenas kept mum.

El Mundo also claims lawyer Miguel Durán, representing Pablo Crespo, one of the ringleaders of the Gürtel corruption trial which Bárcenas is thought to be implicated in, spoke to Bárcenas and said he was doing so in Rajoy’s name. “If you say anything, your wife will go to prison. If you keep quiet, Alberto RuizGallardón will be fired at the last meeting of the Council of Ministers before the summer holidays, and your case will be declared null and void and archived in September,” Durán is alleged to have told Bárcenas. According to Bárcenas’ lawyer, Javier Gómez de Liaño – now representing the disgraced treasurer after he was unable to pay his previous solicitor due to judge Pablo Ruz having frozen his bank accounts – Bárcenas ‘knew nothing’ about the text messages between himself and Rajoy having been published in El Mundo. The PP has confirmed the authenticity of the SMS messages, but insists Bárcenas ‘did not get anything out of Rajoy’ except for words of support. Carlos Floriano, vicesecretary of Elections and Organisation for the PP, says the text messages are

‘solid proof of blackmail’ by Bárcenas, who is ‘betraying and deceiving absolutely everyone’. He insists that the PP has ‘done everything by the book’ and has no intention o giving into any ‘public or private attempt at blackmail’. The SMS published in El Mundo are a ‘tactic’ on Bárcenas’ part to ‘distract the public attention’ from his own possible criminal liability and to ‘hide the source of his money’. “This attempt at private blackmail has not worked – and proof of that is that the ex-treasurer is in jail,” Floriano stresses. “Bárcenas has tried to make these messages public to divert attention from him, but the PP is not going to surrender to any type of blackmail, pressure or threats.” Floriano insists Rajoy (pictured left) ‘has nothing to hide’ and that the public will soon be proud of the fact they have a president who is able to stay strong and carry on as normal in the face of blackmail. But socialist opposition leader Alfredo PérezRubalcaba has called for Rajoy to resign, a request that has hit headlines around the globe, including the main

Plácido Domingo out of hospital

Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo has been discharged from hospital where he was admitted on Monday with a pulmonary embolism. The opera star published the bilingual message, “Going home...me voy a casa,” on his Twitter account on Saturday. Doctors say the 72-year-old singer was treated for a lung embolism caused by a blood clot in a vein – a condition which has prevented him from playing the part of early 20th-century Chilean love poet Pablo Neruda in Daniel Catán’s Il Postino at the Theatre Royal in Madrid. Domingo was due to perform on five nights in the show, which was premièred in Los Angeles (USA) in 2010, starting this coming Wednesday, July 17. Neither will he be able to conduct the Valencia Regional Orchestra in their open-air concert in Madrid’s Plaza Mayor next Sunday (July 21), a free-of-charge performance which will include the works of Verdi and Wagner. The tenor is under doctor’s orders to rest for at least three or four weeks.

Coal-miners’ wives march across Madrid in protest over pit closure

Wives of miners who launched a countrywide protest march and lock-ins at numerous quarries in northern Spain last summer have hit the streets of the capital to reinforce their message. Joined by at least 50 outsiders in support of their plight, many of whom were families with children, the women say they are no better off now than they were a year ago – in fact, their situation is worse. The ministry of industry has been threatening to shut the mines in Aragón, Asturias and Castilla y León, in towns where coal mines comprise almost the entire economy. “Without coal-mining, it’s not just a question of losing jobs. It would mean losing literally everything. If the coal-pits are closed down,

our houses will not be worth a single cent,” says spokeswoman for the miners’ wives, Raquel Valbuena. The group, which has named itself Mujeres del Carbón (‘Coal Women’), set off from RivasVaciamadrid some 20 kilometres outside the city at 09.00hrs yesterday (Saturday) after arriving in several coaches from their various locations in the north of the country. After stopping for a late lunch and a rest in Puente de Vallecas, they left at around 18.00hrs and carried on to the central Puerta del Sol square, making various stops en route. One of these was in front of Atocha station, where they sang the Santa Bárbara, an emotive miners’ anthem.

media in France, the USA and the UK. Rubalcaba has announced that any agreements or pacts the PSOE has made to date or had in the pipeline with the PP – obliquely referring to the two parties’ joining forces over their strategy in the face of the European Union – are now null and void and their paths will not cross. “We refuse to have any relationships or agree anything with a person who is incapable of governing Spain. “Rajoy’s continuing to be at the head of the government constitutes incalculable damage to a country which is going through a traumatic situation, and for its democratic institutions.” Rubalcaba (pictured below right) describes Rajoy as having ‘connived’ with a ‘criminal’, the case against whom has ‘reached a point of no return’. The socialist leader has not confirmed whether he will jointly call for an early election in conjunction with other members of the opposition, whether the rival parties will try to cast a no-confidence vote against Rajoy, or whether he merely hopes to see another member of the PP government take over as

president. Another leading opposition party, United Left (Izquierda Unida, or IU) has called for ‘immediate early elections’ and said Rajoy should be forced to stand down. Socialist vice-secretary general Soraya Rodríguez said recently that the PSOE had ‘not ruled out’ a noconfidence vote to oust Rajoy, although the PP has already stressed that the socialists do not have a leg to stand on as they have no potential replacement candidate, no alternative government plan, and would not obtain enough votes in favour from the opposition

7

to comprise a majority over the votes against from the PP. Floriano calls Rubalcaba’s announcement ‘a pathetic and desperate attempt’ on the part of the socialists to regain power in government, despite the public having ousted them at the general elections in November 2011 by giving a landslide victory to the PP. And Floriano concludes that the party ‘could not care less’ about ‘what Bárcenas gets up to’, and that they are ‘not bothered in the slightest’ if any further information comes to light since they have ‘done nothing wrong’.

An heiress of artist Pablo Picasso’s second wife has reported the theft of 407 of the Málaga-born cubist painter’s works. Catherine Hutin-Blay has just revealed in an interview with Parisien magazine that between 2005 and 2007, sketches, watercolours and sanguines – a technique similar to charcoal drawings – dating from between 1930 and 1970 went missing from her home. She discovered the theft in 2011 and an investigation is under way. “All this is extremely painful for me and has upset me immensely – I lived with Pablo [Picasso] from when I was four years old, I

was his stepdaughter,” laments the daughter of Jacqueline Picasso, the painter’s second wife. Mme Hutin-Blay suspects her gardener, Freddy. “In the beginning I suspected everyone, until I got to Freddy. He worked for Sylvie Baltazart-Eon [heiress of art dealer Aimé Maeght], when we were neighbours. “I moved house but Sylvie and I are still friends. I never gave Freddy a spare key – I didn’t trust him – he worked as a gardener at my old house and took advantage of this by getting a key cut for himself,” Picasso’s stepdaughter concludes.

A 60-year-old man has given himself up to the police after stealing a dinosaur fossil said to date back some 70 million years from an archaeological dig. The resident of Coll de Nargó (Lleida), where the historical site is located, took the ancient rock – said to be from a very young vertebrate creature – on May 29, but became nervous when police investigations closed in on him. He had been informed of the fossil’s age and the fact that if he was indeed the culprit, it was of vital importance

that he put it back where he found it undamaged. The accused left it by a road near the site of the theft, next to the Cretaci viewing point, on June 26 and made an anonymous call to the police immediately afterwards telling them exactly where they would find it. Further investigations were due to be carried out to ascertain whether he was indeed the thief, which terrified the man into owning up. He went to the police station and confessed in person, officers reveal.

Electricity goes up again

Electricity bills are due to go up by an average of 2.50 euros per month now that the government has approved a 3.2percent hike, says FACUA-Consumers in Action. According to the association, a typical household in Spain will now spend 75.72 euros monthly on power. This means it will have increased by eight per cent since January 2012. According to a report by ThinkSpain, a spokesman for FACUA Rubén Sánchez says the price increase ‘is not going to solve the problem’ of the electricity supply deficit, and criticises the fact that the government-owned supplier Iberdrola effectively has a monopoly which means consumers are unable to shop around. Sánchez says electricity tariffs should be better regulated to avoid the ‘habitual price increases’ which come with the quarterly ‘auctions’ for the power board franchise. He adds that the consumer is having to pay for the electricity board’s ‘bad management’. Customers ‘did not create the deficit’ and should not be the ones to have to fork out for repairing it, the FACUA spokesman states. The association has been calling for an audit of costs passed onto the consumer, but this has been rejected by the Spanish government. And companies linked to the Spanish Electrical Industry Association (UNESA) say they ‘totally disagree with’ the recent energy reform launched by the government – which is what has led to the price hikes – and say it will force them to make ‘drastic job cuts’ and ‘reconsider’ its investments in Spain. UNESA says the government is not putting up enough funds to clear the deficit – ‘not even as much as it is obliged to by law’ – and that this is why the consumer is having to pay it back instead. Another leading consumer group, the OCU, says the deficit is over four billion euros and that the customer has been ‘disregarded’. “Unless they’re either paying them or voting for them, the general public does not matter at all to the government,” states the OCU. “We do not know how much the government will pay towards clearing the supply deficit, but we are certain it will be very little and that the rest of the financial burden will be borne by the consumer.”

SOLTIMES JULY 2013

Ministry of health to cease funding for eight brands of birth control pill Eight different types of contraceptive pill will no longer be financed by the Spanish government from August 1, meaning women who use them will have to pay full price to do so even with a prescription. The ministry of health, led by Ana Mato, says the pills in question do not provide any other health benefits besides those of birth control – such as hormone or menstrual cycle regulation – and that there are plenty of other contraceptive drugs on the market which are ‘tried and tested’ and can be used instead. According to the right-wing PP government, the decision is purely financial rather than ‘ideological’, although the socialists have accused them of trying to ‘start a new age of chastity’ and being in cahoots with the Catholic Church, which is against use of contraception. The PP denies this, saying it does indeed provide finance for other types of orally-administered birth control, although even now some brands are unfunded by the ministry of health. Those affected are known as ‘third generation’ contraceptives where the main active ingredients are the hormones Ethynilestradiol and Drospirenone, and which cost between nine and 43 euros without a prescription. ‘Second generation’ contraception pills containing Ethynilestradiol and Levonogestrel work ‘just as effectively’ and are still funded by the national health authority, meaning they can be obtained at prescription prices. And the health ministry says the main reason for eliminating funding is that the manufacturers of the drugs would not accept the agreed fixed contribution the government had been supplying. No connection exists between the fact that France has called for the European Medication Agency to investigate the possible risks involved in third-generation contraceptive pills, or the fact that the Agency has agreed to do this. The drugs which will now only be available at full price in Spain are Dretine, Dretinelle, Drosure, Drosurelle, Drosiane, Drosianelle, Liofora and Yira.

BUILDING BRIDGES THROUGH CUTTING EDGE LIONS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH 950 633 086 EXCHANGE SCHEME 722 294 384 HAIR & BEAUTY SALON

On Wednesday 15th July 2013, a young lady called Juliette Post will be departing from her home in Arboleas to spend the next six weeks in Tokyo, Japan. Juliette is being sponsored by the Lions Club of Vera & District as their first young person to travel from this area under the Lions International Youth Exchange Scheme. This scheme is open to any youngsters aged between 16 to 21, and enables them to visit and experience exciting destinations and host families in many faraway places. As a result of Juliette’s request to go to Tokyo to discover Japanese culture first hand, the Vera club was honoured by the visit of two distinguished Lions from Tokyo on 11th and 12th July, Mr Tsuneo Mitsuhashi and Mr Tsutomu Kinoshita, who has just celebrated his 83rd birthday! They were entertained at the Bar Laguna in Puerto Laguna near Garrucha, where the proprietor presented them with a bottle of champagne to mark the occasion. Lion Glyn Williams, President of Vera and District Lions Club, presented their guests with banners and gifts, when Mr Kinoshita gave an acceptance speech in Japanese! The following day, Vera Lions and their guests visited Juliette’s school and were greeted by the Principal, Don Francisca Torrecillas, and the Mayor of Albox, Don Rogelio Mena, along with Juliette’s mother Dorien and partner Laurent, and several other notable dignitaries. Students from the Martin Garcia Ramos School then enacted an award-winning play live on stage, about passion and death surrounding a peasant girl and her bull-fighting lover and their tragic end. It reminded one of the novel “Death in the afternoon” by Ernest Hemingway, and was beautifully wrought by the students. This was followed by the ceremonial planting of a cherry tree in a specially prepared plot in the school grounds, where a commemorative plaque now proudly sits for all to see. During this interesting couple of days, the Lions Club of Vera and Don Francisco Torrecillas, the Principal of the School, agreed to work together to promote the International Youth Exchange programme, and have begun the search for the next young person from the area who will become part of the exchange project for 2014. For further information about Youth Exchange, please contact Keith Linnitt on Movil 667 252 644.

Qureshi, the first to perform the procedure in the country, believes it will be widely available across the country in a matter of years. He said: [This treatment] is the biggest thing in laser surgery in the last 20 years; everybody should be having this alongside standard laser treatment. ‘The procedure ensures that the risk of developing complications from laser treatment is virtually reduced to zero.’ According to the manufacturers, no one who has undergone the procedure has suffered any of the three most serious complications. Laser eye surgery works by removing tissue from the cornea to change its shape. There are different types of laser eye surgery but LASIK - which stands for LaserAssisted In-Situ Keratomileusis - is the most common. The procedure involves applying anaesthetic drops, after which a small flap is made on the surface of the cornea using a hand-held device.

After this, a laser is used to remove a minute amount of corneal tissue, thereby reshaping it before the flap is replaced. The procedure takes around 10 minutes per eye. With standard laser eye treatment, patients are at risk of infection, corneal ectasia (in which the lasered, weakened cornea gives way to pressure, causing bulging) and epithelial ingrowth (where the cells from the surface layer of the eye begin to grow underneath the corneal flap). There is also the possibility of regression, where the short or long-sightedness returns several years later. This results in the patient having to resort to wearing glasses or returning for further treatment. But with LASIK Xtra - which can be used with all laser eye treatments, despite its name - the risks are dramatically reduced. The treatment works by cross-linking the fibres within the cornea, making them thicker and substantially more

resilient. Eye drops containing a modified version of riboflavin - Vitamin B2 - are applied after laser treatment, which are then ‘activated’ by UV light. The ultraviolet light exposure during the procedure is comparable to the exposure to the ultraviolet light experienced on one full day outdoors in the summer. Without this treatment, patients are at a higher risk of complications and could need future treatment to cope with corneal weakness. Mr Qureshi said: ‘Every person having laser eye surgery treatment should undergo LASIK Xtra.’ The procedure is already widely used around the world and has been used on 50,000 patients in Japan alone. It has however only just become available in the UK a it was only recently approved for EU use. The new treatment is being offered as standard for all laser eye surgery at the London Eye Hospital, including LASIK and LASEK, to correct short sight, long-sight and astigmatism.

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT Diabetes kidney damage test ‘missed’

Monica Algañaraz Over 40 years experience in physiotherapy and osteopathic treatment. General postural assessment and holistic health checks available English spoken

A quarter of people with diabetes do not get the kidney checks they need to detect early signs of damage, a charity suggests. According to a report by the BBC, Diabetes UK says data from the National Diabetes Audit in 2010/11 shows around 25% of people in England failed to get the urinary albumin check. Just under 10,000 people in England and Wales needed treatment for diabetes-related kidney failure that year. The charity said the figures were “concerning”. Kidney failure is a common complication in people with diabetes. Around three million people in the UK are thought to have diabetes, with most cases being Type 2. Another 850,000 are thought to have undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes, There are a number of checks which people with diabetes should undergo each year - to ensure that potential complications including eye and foot problems are picked up early. The urine check is one of two which can detect kidney problems. The second is a blood test which shows how well the kidneys are working. More people have this - but Diabetes UK warns the urine test is also an essential part of the check-up. However it says part of the problem could be as simple as patients forgetting to take a urine sample to their appointment. Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: “It is really concerning that a quarter of people with diabetes are missing out on a simple check that could identify kidney problems early enough to slow their progression.” And she said the cost of treating kidney failure was part of the reason diabetes costs made up 10% of the NHS budget.

The Steve Gilmore Memorial Tournament

6th July: Ninety eight players came to pay their respects to Steve at Alborán Golf course by playing in a competition billed as a celebration and promotion of golf in Almeria. As well as local golfers, friends flew from the UK and travelled from Alicante Province and Murcia to be a part of the commemoration. The participation of every golf course in Almeria, as well as three from neighbouring provinces, ensured the day would live up to its boast, and players from most local societies, both English and Spanish, competed for the many prizes. The enthusiastic turnout certainly has established the competition as a keenly anticipated event for years to come. With a frisky coastal wind cooling the heat of a classic summer’s day, the beautifully prepared course lived up to its reputation as a demanding course to beat. A major thank you is due to JJ Serrano of Aguilon Golf who provided extra buggies at the last minute to be sure those that needed them could travel in comfort. Despite the wind the standard was high, with players in 3 of the 4 divisions beating par and most of the nearest the pin prizes being won. Denied the ‘slope’ the Ladies didn’t fare so well. A great turnout from Steve’s Spanish friends meant that the organisers were able to arrange a mix of nationalities out on the course and, despite the language difficulty, many players walked off having made new friends. Steve would have loved that! Because of a tragedy overnight in the family of the caterers, the prize-giving had to be resituated instantly. The officials at Alborán worked frantically during the tournament to organise a new venue; a massive task to be sure of satisfying so many hungry and thirsty players and their supporters, but one they achieved successfully. Apart from the many prizes won during the competition there was a prize draw of scorecards which sent almost everyone home with a tangible memory of the day. Hopefully this competition will have done what it set out to and raised the profile of an incredibly important, yet somewhat neglected asset in this part of Spain – an asset that should be contributing to the wealth of the local area. The organisers must thank not only all of the Almeria golf courses and societies, but also the principal sponsors, Liberty Seguros and Boxers GS, and the many individuals and local businesses who contributed to the event with their sponsorship, GSF Communications, EuroWeekly News, Pitstop Garage, restaurants El Albir and AcáCharl, Building Solutions, Blue Sky Pools, Spain Property Finder, and the Costa Almeria Tourist Board, Richard Measures, Adrian Thomson, Trevor Barker and Almeria lawyer Juan Cassinello. A collection for the British Heart Foundation produced €240 with pledges to top this up. Results: Given the conditions it was no surprise that local knowledge proved to be a strong advantage, which is evident from the results, but congratulations are in order to the many players from other courses who featured in the divisional places and NTP wins. Rachel Walker, Steve’s widow very kindly agreed to present the memorial trophy. www.soltimes.com We all look forward to the summer months when the sun shines continually, but with the blue skies and blooming gardens comes a wealth of troublesome health issues ranging from insect bites and hay fever to travel sickness and sunburn. Follow our guide to ensure you are well equipped to deal with summer’s health hazards! Keep tetanus jabs up-to-date (especially children) as cuts and scrapes are more common in the summer. Ward off miserable summer colds that the whole family gets subjected to by ensuring you and your family are eating five pieces of fruit and vegetables a day. One portion might be one apple, one medium sized banana, two kiwi fruit or a small bunch of grapes. Use the insect screens on doors and windows - they’ll keep any unwelcome insects safely on the outside - and avoid leaving doors open with lights on. Protect yourself from biting insects with a longlasting repellent Hay fever sufferers can keep pollen free by taking practical measures, such as wearing sunglasses, covering hair with a shakeable hat, showering and changing clothes after walking or gardening and keeping windows and doors closed during times when pollen counts are high (e.g. 5-7pm).

SOLTIMES JULY 2013

15

If you are unfortunate enough to get diarrhoea, rest, eat nothing for 24 hours, drink small sips of water regularly and replace body fluids with a re-hydration treatment available from the pharmacy. As the stomach settles don’t be tempted to eat too much too soon - bland foods such as bread or dry biscuits are recommended before returning to your normal diet. Large meals, particularly fatty foods and fizzy drinks, should be avoided before travelling to keep travel sickness at bay. It’s a good idea to always be prepared with travel sickness tablets, just in case. Summer is the season for all day barbeques and al fresco dining. With all these events come the unwanted sideeffects of indigestion and hangovers having indulged in too much fine wine, beer and burgers! It is easy to lose track of how much you are drinking when partying during the day so try to have at least one glass of water in between drinks. If the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still reach you on a cloudy day in the UK, think of their intensity here in Spain! Don’t forget to use sunscreen with a minimum SPF15 and apply sunscreen to your lips, nose, ears, feet, back of neck, bald patches, hairline and partings - these areas are often forgotten with painful consequences!

Here’s to a superb summer!

Q: My wife and myself (71 and 68 ) live in Spain since 2006. We are

both to the best of our knowledge tax residents. We have a house in joint names valued at approximately 180000 euro and savings of aprox. 40000. We would like to know how much inheritance tax my wife would have to pay if I deceased, and how much capital gains tax would we pay if we decided to sell?

A . You are going to like the answers. Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled as resident of Andalucía to 175000 euro tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175000 euro exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16000 euro. Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years previous to the death. Believe it or not very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another. Incredible but true...A wife resident in Almería inheriting a net estate of 813000 euro from her husband would pay just under 200000 euro in Andalucia while if the same wife had been living in Madrid she would have paid 0 inheritance tax). Could the lady have avoided the tax. Yes, but the tax planning would have required the family moved to Madrid. Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax.

The general rule is that the higher the thread count, the get the very best more superior the quality of your bed linen. night’s sleep. Follow our bed Which fabric is suitable for you? linen guide and Cotton: It’s not surprising that C o t t o n be inspired!

A Buyers Guide To Bed Linen cotton is the most important non-food commodity in the world. Hairs from the tropical cotton plant are spun into yarn, then cloth. It’s low maintenance, versatile and affordable.

Cotton Percale: This is a variation on the regular cotton where the cotton yarn is given a combed treatment. This gives the bed linen a lovely smooth finish and with a thread count of over 180, it has a high quality feel about it. Linen: Linen is made from yarn made out of fibres from the flax plant. It is a heavier, stronger fibre than cotton, creating a fabric that is smoother and with a very unique drape. It is an excellent conductor of heat and does not retain any moisture - these qualities make linen both snug and really comfortable. Linen is a luxury yarn. To keep bed linen affordable, a combination of linen and cotton brings the qualities of both yarns together.

Sateen: This is a

weaving technique that is slightly more expensive to weaving classic cotton cloth. This different process produces a bed linen that is incredibly soft to handle and has a fabulous sheen.

Chambray: Often referred to as ‘yarn dye’, chambray is made up of a warp and weft thread of different colours. This weaving technique gives a smart, sophisticated look to plain cotton bed linen. Silk: Originating from China, silk fabric is made from the continuous fibre the silk caterpillar makes to cocoon itself during its transformation into a moth. In the manufacturing process, fibres from several cocoons are twisted together to make a yarn of suitable thickness for weaving. It commands a high price tag, but its superb dyeing qualities make it a true luxury fabric that needs care and attention to keep it looking good.

t i F p e e K , l o Ke e p Co Swimming not only serves as a way to beat the heat, it also is a great way for people of all ages to achieve peak fitness.

Swimming exercises all the major muscle groups of the body as well as the heart and lungs, making it a great activity for overall fitness. It builds lung capacity, endurance and strength. Swimming is a non-impact activity so it’s a good alternative to high-impact exercise like running and aerobics. It’s kinder to the joints so a good choice for those with achy knees and ankles. It’s also good exercise in pregnancy. Almost every muscle in your body is used when swimming; it is an excellent body toner. It is not a mere coincidence that most serious swimmers have lean and tightly toned bodies. The work your muscles must go through to propel the body through the water resistance not only burns lots of calories, but that stubborn fat as well. While swimming can be fun with many health benefits, like many sports it can lead to fatal accidents if not done carefully and with proper supervision. Even seasoned veterans should consider consulting a trained expert to enhance or maximize their workout. Swimming promotes stamina, mobility and overall strength training. The water adds resistance to your movements; it also forces you to use your core muscles to help the body remain stabilised in the water. That is why it is one of the best forms of exercise. Other exercises, such as running or rigorous weight-training, can put a lot of stress on your joints, ligaments and tendons, and can lead to chronic injury. But the buoyancy of water helps swimmers avoid those injuries. Water also increases flexibility because the effects of gravity

are lessened; stretches that may be difficult to perform on land can be done with ease in water because the joints are able to move through a greater range of motion. Getting into the swim of things... You can burn as many as 900 calories in just one hour of swimming. Spend the bulk of your workout doing the front crawl, also known as freestyle; it’s generally faster than the other strokes, so you can cover more distance. In addition to the front crawl, adding the backstroke and butterfly to your routine will help to avoid boredom. Treading water helps to tone the legs and the arms so you even work out when you’re just floating about! Due to it’s meditative quality, swimming can also help soothe the mind and help turn your attention away from the stresses of the day, which not only is important for the mind, but also can help reduce the risk of heart disease and high-blood pressure. Who benefits? Swimming is ideal for people of any age and physical ability, including pregnant women, the elderly, overweight people, arthritis sufferers and those recovering from injuries

SOLTIMES JULY 2013

COMMUNITY NEWS ALBOX NAVY CLUB.

At 13.00 on Tuesday 9th July 2013, a meeting was held at Bistro Bonita, Cerro Gordo, Cantoria, the object being to form an association in this area not only for submariners but anyone with a naval interest? It has been initiated by Chris Wright and John Patrick (both ex RN Submariners) The new club will be called the ‘Albox Navy Club’ and is open to anyone with any naval connection. The club will meet monthly at Bistro Bonita, Cerro Gordo. At 13.00 on the 1st Tuesday of the month. There were 5 naval types at the 1st meeting, with 1 apology and 1 other interested party making a starting membership of 7, which is very good considering the very short notice of the inauguration? There was a mix of both Royal Navy and Merchant Navy members and a very good first meeting took place with excellent tapas provided by Chris Wright (mine host). The object of this new venture is to provide a monthly gathering of likeminded ex-navy men or any other interested party to ‘spin dits’ and ‘swing the odd lamp, remembering those days spent at sea. Ladies are welcome and it has been suggested that a ‘Ladies Section’ could be formed? The next meeting will be at 13.00 on Tuesday 6th August 2013, there is no joining fee although a thought must be given to raise some form of finance? All are welcome. Further details can be obtained from either: Chris Wright 950 930 169 or John Patrick 950 930 694.

Albox RBL News

The Musical Memories evening staged by the Piedra Amarilla Amphitheatre proved to be an enjoyable event. The organisers donated nearly €400 to the Poppy Fund. Albox Travel Club donated over €600 to the Poppy Fund, tickets for their Christmas trip to Nerja are available from any RBL event. Lianne Bamford and members of the Sol Yoga Centre in La Cinta collected €65.50 during a year of contortion. This money has been donated to the Poppy Fund. Each of the above donations is gratefully received and all concerned are to be thanked for their efforts in raising the money. If you require more details for any of the activities and events for the Albox branch or should you wish to become a member (you do not need to be ex-forces to join) and help with the Legion’s excellent work for British serving and exservice personnel and their families, both in the UK and here in Spain, please come along to any branch meeting at the Hotel Restaurante La Parrilla (1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month). Alternatively, contact the chairman, Peter Phillips, on 693483392 or email peatpee@sky.com, or visit the branch website, www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/albox.

Incorporating Baza Sub-branch The Royal British Legion caring and campaigning for the serving & ex-service community

The Albox Branch of The Royal British Legion held their bi-annual bazaar on the 4th July at its usual venue of La Parrilla Hotel & Restaurant in the Main Square of Albox. Despite the current financial climate, the following local businesses kindly donated goods towards the tombola stall;Girasol, Sleep centre, Living designs, Cornish Pride, Serendipity, One Stop Pools, Scrumptious Café, Frillies, Eurowise, Cutting Edge, Rug Shop, Jacks Bar, Book Shop, Las Casicas Nursery, Cards Galore, Green Box Stall, Mr Plastic, Mrs Macs Pantry, Tony the Book Stall, Do Little Pet Stores, P & R Direct, The Yellowstone Bar, Corner shop, Price Busters, Simply Art, Glad Rags, Donna’s, Sol supermarcado, Wavelengths, Total Entertainment, La Vida Dulce, Colin the card, Amigos bowling, Essentials, Humbugs, Sophias, Antas Ferreteria El Real. We would also like to thank our members who donated items including Rita Monger, Ron & Sandra and many others. Their generosity raised 177 € towards our charity funds and we thank them. Unfortunately it seems a person or persons are going around purporting to be collecting for The Royal British Legion when they are not. Albox Branch covers Arboleas through to Albox and up beyond Baza. Collectors for our Branch will always wear badges and will show their membership cards if asked. Falsely collecting for a charity is a crime. If you are not sure please check and if necessary call the police. Albox Branch is a busy and friendly Branch, so why not come along to one of our regular meetings (coffee morning 1st Thursday of each month, monthly meeting 3rd Thursday) at La Parrilla and if you like what we do join us in our goal of providing welfare help and support for serving and ex-service men & women. You do not have to be ex-services to join and if you served in one of the armed forces for at least 7 days you will be entitled to our support. If you require more details for any of the activities and events for the Albox branch contact the chairman, Peter Phillips, on 693483392 or email peatpee@sky.com, or visit the branch website, www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/albox.

SOLTIMES JULY 2013

viewpoint alqueria - El Tonto Más Débil

There are many things that are a mystery to me. Such as: Why does everything fall on the floor when my back is iffy and I can’t bend to pick things up? How can bread in the toaster go from virgin to burnt in a nano-second? Does the toaster know when I’m not watching it? What keeps the world spinning at a constant speed? Why doesn’t it run down and stop? I have given passing thought to certain of these problems. For instance all the droppage problems the world over would be solved by the elimination of gravity. I was delighted with this simple solution, thinking of all the benefits – just stack anything you need at a convenient mid-air height, and there it would stay! No need for cupboards, no more broken crockery, and no more dusting of shelves! Then I thought of drains, and realised that maybe there were some things that were definitely better with gravity! I’m not too concerned about the earth’s daily rotation slowing down; in fact if it slowed a little bit it could be a good thing – we would get longer days, so more time to get everything done, followed by longer nights, meaning that, come morning, we would be more ready to get up. And the Christmas rush would become the Christmas Leisurely Stroll! I am currently wrestling with the Misplaced Persons Mystery. At this time of year everywhere is full to bursting with holiday makers. Go to the coast – it’s full! Not just the Spanish coast, all other coasts all over the northern hemisphere will be jam-packed with people on holiday. This is understandable, they have obviously come from inland. So why are all inland places, both urban and rural, heaving with those who need a tourist map to get around? In other words, how come that everywhere, repeat everywhere, is full of people? How can the roads, the car parks, the shops, the beaches and everybody’s house be so cram full of visitors? If the total population remains the same, then surely there must be a vast area with nobody in it. Yet ask any holiday maker where they come from, then go to that place, which should logically be empty, and it too will be full to overflowing with visitors. I may have the answer to this anomaly: How many times have you seen a non-resident person dressing and acting in a way that makes you say ‘Where do they come from?’ I think I know - they are in fact aliens, on holiday on this planet and cleverly disguised to almost resemble real people. Mystery solved!

I often leaf through the daily UK papers that are free to read at our morning coffee stop, but I rarely purchase one. This isn’t because I’m mean with my money or as tight as the proverbial ducks backside – which as everyone knows, is watertight – but because I baulk at paying an inflated amount for something that is a fraction of the price back home and moreover, when it comes to the weekend editions, does not include the extra supplements. They are even printed here in Spain for goodness sake - which is self evident by the news print stains on my hands and clothes after handling - so there is not the excuse of having to pay overseas transportation costs. But anyway, I did break with my regular custom this week and invested in a Sunday paper – but only because there were some items that I particularly wanted to study along with the write up of the Ashes clash at Trent Bridge and well . . . just because I

felt like it. Oh, and a nice picture of Joanna Lumley that I might cut out and stick on my book shelf at the side of my desk. Anyway, I ignored the remarks about moths emerging from my wallet as I coughed up the three euros, thirty and the hurtful remark from my wife - ‘Just a minute while I get my camera’ - and I looked forward to a lazy day of browsing the British news sheet over a small beer in the garden. I resolved to disregard the stories of doom and disaster that I would inevitably find within its pages and not use any of them as a basis for this week’s column. Regrettably, like my new year’s good intentions that lasted less than 24 hours in the case of my proposed new dietary schedule and drinking habits; another resolution is about to bite the dust. Strictly speaking though, it’s not so much as a result of reading the stories that describe the crumbling British economy; the ailing National Health Service or the thousand and one other things that are designed to bring on the feeling that my head will explode, but something that has not, as far as I know, been mentioned by the media. And it regards the deportation of Abu By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

Qatada. We are told that following the signing of a treaty by Britain and Jordan, that ensures the non-use of torture, this man agreed voluntarily to return to Jordan to face charges. But why? I mean, we all know the value of treaties which are after all, merely sheets of Basildon Bond, a bottle of Quink and two politicians with a pen. We all saw the images of him smirking at the cameras as he boarded the British tax payerfunded private jet, and the simpering look of self assurance as he glanced out of the cabin window. I thought at one stage that he was actually going to wave goodbye. Then we saw a positively beaming Abu Qatada as he was led away by police in Amman. What was going on? Why would he willingly give up his free home, welfare hand-outs and Burger King – torture or no torture – to return to the country where he has citizenship, but crucially where he faces charges of conspiracy to carry out terrorist acts? What does this man know that we don’t? Well, we shall see, but something is definitely not right here and I wouldn’t mind betting that there will be another twist to this story soon, and that Abu Qatada will be walking free again. Just a minute while I go and get myself another cold beer . . . Some of the classified ads though, make me smile. Especially the ones that promise the way to instant riches. Here’s one . . . Make £1200 every day, guaranteed. Even giving yourself Sunday off this would mean an income of over seven grand a week and 374k a year. Your first reaction to this quite naturally, would be: Wow; I’ll have

The Remitroot plants which were genetically mutated in Don Miguel El Sabio’s particle accelerator became increasingly intelligent. It was thought necessary to keep them under lock and key with their existence on a ‘need to know’ basis only. Loco Paco was the weakest link however and contacted a national newspaper hoping to sell the story. As the reporter, José Patraña interviewed him it became obvious that Paco didn’t have all his paddles in the water. His credibility came into question when he asked for a saucer of milk for his imaginary five foot rodent. It was then Paco was thrown bodily from the newspaper’s offices. The Don, who mutated the Remitroot and Antonio Poyato who originally grew them nurtured their crop in secret. The plants showed a remarkable ability to learn. Soon it became obvious that they were intellectually superior to any of the villagers. Poyato and the Don were both thinkers and decided to make as much capital from the plants as possible. They would appear on a game show. The first problem would be to make the Remitroot plants look like contestants. The British Conservative Party has been passing plant-life off as human for years, so it can’t be that difficult. ‘El Tonto Más Débil’ is a game show hosted by a totally unpleasant and odious individual, Anna La Desagradable. This offensive woman asks the game’s questions while insulting the contestants, their relatives and everything they hold dear. Poyato thought she might be plant-life herself, which would certainly explain a lot. Poyato, the Don and two Remitroot plants faced a team drawn from the Over Eighties’ Limbo Dancing and Bungee Jumping Club of Níjar. As the game progressed the Plants nodded the right answers and points piled up in favour of the Alquerian team. The heat of the studio lights began to have an adverse effect on the Remitroot plants. They started to wilt and droop. Their nodding became erratic and they started to get answers wrong. Anna was in high glee and insulted the Plants with gusto. The Plants became despondent and a despondent Remitroot plant is something one steers well clear of. They shed their leaves, by design or because of the heat it was impossible to say. The leaves fell in the communal drinking water cooler. Now, Remitroot is a very effective aphrodisiac. As the water was consumed so the show degenerated into a heap of writhing bodies. The programme couldn’t be broadcast in its usual time-slot, but appeared at two in the morning with the new title of ‘Red Hot Anna’. If it were possible for plants to have smug expressions then these certainly did.

some of that and judging by the fact that the same ads appear week after week, it would seem that many gullible readers do indeed get themselves some of that. But come on; just think about it. If you were putting into practice whatever it is you have to do to make 374 grand a year – would you be telling others how to

make 374 grand a year, even for a nice fee? And more to the point, would you need to sell the information on how to make 374 grand a year if you were already raking in 374 grand a year? The simple one word answer is: Nope! Still, I’ve made a note of that number just in case.

braben’s blog... ‘Bomber’ Harris There are so many things that have always been and continue to be, beyond me. Chinese for example or why on earth anybody would willingly watch daytime television when there are far more stimulating things to do, like ironing or worming the cat. But certainly one of the most mysterious things on the face of the planet, as far as I’m concerned, is knitting. You see, it is beyond me how anyone managed to make the connection between a sheep and what can be done with two pointy sticks. Actually, I imagine that the sight of someone coming at it with two pointy sticks was rather disconcerting for the sheep! But how did those early knitters-Egyptian apparently-get from seeing sheep’s wool to producing some sort of clothing? It’s an amazing leap of ingenuity and even today, when I see my wife knitting, with the needles a blur, I am full of admiration for the way a jumble of wool can suddenly begin to turn into a sleevealthough it still seems less hassle to pop to Marks and Spencer! Yes, life is full of little things that remain a mystery to me and also, I imagine, to many others. Not that this is a bad thing, I quite like the idea that there are things that are just there and I don’t even have to attempt to understand or explain them-like how the makers of Bounty managed to get a coconut into those little chocolate bars. No, I am very happy not to even have to question some things, but others, which unlike Bounty bars or knitting, which apparently serve no useful purpose that I can fathom, really ought to be looked at. For example, wax museums. Why? I have to say that the attraction of wandering around a place which has wax statues of famous people , some of which are about as believable as having those guys from the Pawn Stars series star in a Graham is married slimming campaign, is quite beyond me! I to Helen and has know that if Mr. Roberts, my Primary school a daughter, Alice. teacher, had seen me produce anything He lives part of the that was remotely like some of the models year near Albox, but works in Qatar, on show in these places when we were in teaching. If you wish the Art lesson, I would have been in serious to contact Graham danger of a sore ear! If you get the chance, regarding this take a look at Hollywood Wax Works to see article email: helenandg@yahoo. the true awfulness-but please, don’t tell Mr. Roberts! co.uk

Arthur Harris was born in 1892; his parents didn’t think him clever enough to go to Eton as his brothers had before, so gave him the choice of joining the army or going to the colonies. He chose the latter and went to Rhodesia, successfully trying his hand at gold mining and tobacco farming. The small matter of the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 was a defining point for Harris and he first joined a Rhodesian regiment. In 1915 he returned to Britain joining the Royal Flying Corps which was then part of the British Army. In his Sopwith Camel he shot down five enemy planes and ended the war a Major. Harris witnessed the futility and slowness of trench warfare and thought that aerial bombing was a more efficient way of doing things. Harris stayed in the forces after the war making Squadron Leader in the newly formed Royal Air Force. He served in the British Empires troubled hotspots; Mesopotamia, Persia, Palestine and the North West Frontier in India where locals rudely fought against their imperial masters. Exciting new devices were used such as delayed action bombs and poison gas. Some of the top brass resigned in protest at the use of these inhumane weapons but Harris simply stated that ‘the only thing the Arab understands is a heavy hand!’ Stationed in Palestine in 1936 Harris suggested that a 500lb bomb dropped on each of the troublesome villages would satisfactorily solve the problem of any revolting Arabs. He rose through the ranks becoming Air vice Marshall. For a man thought not clever enough by his parents, Harris set up the RAF’s night training programme and wrote a paper on the role RAF would play in event of a major war. By the start of WW2 Harris was Deputy Chief of Air Staff. Bombing was not yet part of Britain’s war strategy as navigational skills were not up to long flying missions and less than 1 bomb in 10 landed within 5 miles of the intended targets. Things changed in 1942 when Harris became commander in chief of Bomber Command. Harris had studied German bombing tactics from the Spanish Civil War and correctly reasoned that mass destruction of civilian targets

would hasten the end of the war. A Professor Lindemann thought the same, suggesting to Churchill that ‘area’ or carpet bombing of cities would put a huge strain on enemy resources due to the subsequent repairs needed and also cause a massive drop in morale. Men and machinery would also be diverted from the frontline to defend cities. Thus the term ‘total war’ came into existence and these ideas were quickly put into use by ‘Bomber’ Harris. The first ever 1000 bomber raid took place over two nights at the end of May 1942; Cologne was targeted with 1400 tonnes of mostly incendiaries dropped. 2500 fires were started causing massive damage. 18 months previously the Luftwaffe had tried the same in the Blitz but with much less effect. Harris also gained another nickname, ‘butcher’ as he used statistics to estimate potential Allied losses. 43 planes were lost and it was deemed a success. A year Hamburg was attacked in the same way, nicknamed the Hiroshima of Germany as 10 square miles of the city was obliterated. These attacks severely weakened Germany however ‘Bomber’ Harris will also be remembered as the man who destroyed the beautiful medieval city of Dresden in February 1945, in the dying days of the war. Churchill wrote a month later ‘The destruction of Dresden remains a serious Enjoy Stephens musings? Thunderbird Part 2. - The empire strikes back! Last time we looked at Thunderbird as a replacement for the problems of ‘normal’ online email systems. You found, downloaded and installed the program ready for use, didn’t you? Good! Today we have to set it up by starting Thunderbird and following the ‘white rabbit’ – oops! Sorry, that’s the ‘matrix’ movie! I meant following the ‘windows’! We do this by starting the program. This is the point you will be shown a screen that will help you in the setting up of the your emails. So, first question. Do you have an email address? If not, then Thunderbird offers you the opportunity to find one by putting in your chosen name into the search bar at the top. The downside is that every name displayed, is a yearly ‘paid for’ address, and to date I can’t see the ready advantages of paying for something that is entirely suitable and free (Did I mention Free?)! You have then 2 more options, ‘Use your own address’ or ‘Skip and fill in manually later’. Well if you have an email address and want Thunderbird to set it up for you, choose option 1. If you’re a smarty pants and like doing things the hard way, choose option 2. Being lazy, I’ve chosen option 1. In the next screen Thunderbird wants your full name, the email address and password. Don’t worry about this information being stored on your computer, it is encrypted and would take weeks to crack. (far easier to crack your email provider and get thousands of addresses)! In my case it was ‘Trevor Spencer’; ‘canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk’ and ‘D0nt Kr4ck mY p255w0rd’. Thunderbird now checks the internet for the setting and displays the ones that work. There is a button at the bottom of the screen labelled ‘Done’, I clicked on it and it checked the password by trying to access the email account, and as it was the right one, the installation of my first email address was complete. For more email addresses go to the menu bar → ‘Tools’ → ‘Account settings’ → ‘Account actions’ (at the bottom of the screen) and just follow the same process. The main working page should now appear. One thing I didn’t like was the minimalist interface. Where is the menu bar? Well, if you ‘RIGHT CLICK’ just next to the ‘Tab’, you will get a drop down box. There is an ‘UnTicked’ option ‘LEFT CLICK’ this option and the menu bar will appear. The next bit might take a while as Thunderbird now reads all the email from the server and compares them to what is has stored, which right now, is none. Pretty soon the emails are down and you can read them at your leisure. Emails arrived, you can just enjoy the ease of only one method of reading, replying and writing your emails. Later you can start to tweak how things are done in the program but for now you have a working, single place, to store in, create and reply to, all your electronic correspondence. I’m out of space for now but am writing a complete ‘How To’ that will be for sale at the next ‘La Vida Fayre’. Miss it, Miss out :-) More about some of the tweaks, to personalise your Thunderbird, next week. For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

His 40 points push him closer to the single-figure handicap that must surely be waiting for him! The other high spots had to be Arthur Davies’ fine 2 at the 8th which was within inches of being a very expensive round in the bar, and Pete Dawson’s twin nearest the pins. We were pleased to hear that Director of Golf, JJ Serrano, continues to make good progress with his recovery from a scary health episode.

Boat Fishing. Myself, ‘Blisters Steve’ and ‘Chef Jeremy’ went out with ‘Orca Steve’ on what has become a rare Monday with little or no wind. Initially we tried anchoring in 130 feet on the south side of the River Abajo. We caught lots of different species although as usual in recent times nothing of any size. Banded, pandora and white bream. Combers, Spanish mackerel, bogues, pickerels and the biggest Atlantic mackerel I’ve ever seen, it must have weighed 3lbs. I had a lift bite that I was hoping was a triggerfish or sunfish but when I caught up with my slack line and landed the fish it turned out to be a palomete, a nice fish but of no great size. See photo of me and my palomete. We saw a couple of sunfish catching some rays of sun but they wouldn’t come close. A stingray came to eye me up and pinch a couple of discarded prawn heads but quickly disappeared when I dropped in my rig. A palomete also took advantage of free prawn heads and my good nature of throwing it a few prawn scraps. Not that I didn’t have an alternative motive for the free feed but the fish just

Sid was soon out again with ‘Big Paul Barns’ and his mate Jeff and they were joined by Gavin. They had another good day with a flat sea and little drift. Lots of fish were caught except by Paul who was blanking with 30 minutes to go but ended up catching the best trigger of the day. ‘Pugwash Pete’ was out with ‘Steady Eddie’ and the pair had a great day. Lots of small red snappers and mackerel. Eddie landed a nice twin banded bream which Pete enjoyed for dinner. Pete was out again with ‘Richard from the loft’ and his sons Sam and Jack. They all caught a few fish but Sam was not well and supplied the ground bait. When he recovered he landed a nice Atlantic scad. Jack wasn’t catching so spent his time swimming, it was a good day enjoyed by all.

Slow play has been a hot topic lately and a curse on most courses in Spain, some players seem to think that they are the only ones on the golf course,so let us try and be aware of where we are on the golf course and what is going on around us. RESULTS Wednesday July 3 Monthly Medal Our members seem to be getting the better of “medalitis” with scores of under par becoming the norm. 1st Graham Tabberer 84-17= 67 2nd Chris Baker 78-9=69 3rd Roy Stubbins 95-24=71 Twos: Graham Tabberer 8th and Ian Jenner 10th Wednesday July 10 – Individual Stableford Shore Fishing. ‘London Bill’ has been doing well fishing Macenas rocks; he caught sea bass, Atlantic and Spanish mackerel, Atlantic scad and palomete, all edible sizes but no specimens. Coarse Fishing. ‘Baza Barry’ fished Lake Negratin and had about 100lbs of carp and barbel in an eight hour session. Two Murcia matches were won with weights of 28lbs and 26lbs. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650.

On a blistering hot day with high humidity adding to the difficulty it was good to see half the field coming in with scores in the “buffer zone” 1st Dave Simpson 37pts on a card play off 2nd Steve Willingham 37pts 3rd Bill Gibb 36pts on a card play off Twos: Dave Sharp and Steve Willingham 4th, Jim Barclay 8th and Caroline Willingham 17th Guests and visitors are welcome to join us on a Mon, Wed and Friday For information contact 634 641 199

Forum Golf Society points was 11 better than the 77

After the abandoning of Forum Golf Society´s previous event at Aguilon because of the untimely and tragic death of Harry Thornton with a heart attack, it was back to business as usual for the society with a Team Bowmaker at Desert Springs on July 12th, albeit that there was a consensus of opinion that golf is really just a game, and not that important in the overall scheme of things.

The winning team, by a considerable margin after recording 8 gross birdies consisted of Derek Manning, Richard Swaine, Phil Elam & Fran Elam who´s score of 88

Latest license information. There is a new loophole for those without a nie number who want an Andalucian beach and/or boat fishing license. It will mean a trip in person to Almeria with a friend who has a nie number and has a 50/50 chance of working! The other loophole for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Murcia. There is now a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing licenses for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. wasn’t interested in anything attached to a hook and line, clever fish. Trolling to and from the river mark produced nothing and there are no signs locally of any tuna about. The Spanish boats would be trolling if there were any. We drifted over various marks around the Repsol garage area; depths of 180 feet down to 30 feet didn’t produce anything better than we caught earlier so all in all it was a great day with no monsters caught. ‘Hissing Sid’ went out with Bunny, Clive and Jack over on holiday. The sea had a big swell but no wind thankfully. Fishing was good with plenty of species being caught. It was Sid’s last two hours that produced best and he found the triggers.
