UN refugee agency says more than 2m have fled Syria

More than two million Syrians are now refugees, with the total going up by a million in six months, the UN says. According to a report by the BBC, at least 700,000 have fled to Lebanon, and more Syrians are now displaced than any other nationality, the UNHCR says. France and the US are continuing to push for military action over alleged chemical weapons use by Syrian forces. There are suggestions that President Barack Obama may be planning much wider action than the limited strikes that have been publicly proposed. The reports emerged as senior US politicians were set to speak before a congressional committee, to rally support for intervention. The UNHCR said in a statement on Tuesday: “Syria is haemorrhaging women, children and men who cross borders often with little more than the clothes on their backs.” Around half of those forced to leave are children, UN agencies estimate, with about three-quarters of them under 11. Just 118,000 refugee children have been able to continue in some sort of education, and only one-fifth have received some sort of counselling, with agencies warning of a “lost generation” of child refugees ill-equipped to help rebuild Syria in the future. Lebanon has received the highest number of refugees, even though it is the smallest of Syria’s neighbours and one of the least able to cope. There is now thought to be one Syrian refugee in Lebanon to roughly every six Lebanese. Jordan and Turkey have taken in the second and third highest numbers respectively. As well as those who have left the country, a further 4.25 million have been displaced within Syria, the UNHCR says, meaning that more Syrians are now forcibly displaced than is the case with any other country. Pointing out that more than 97% of Syria’s refugees are being hosted by countries in the surrounding region, the UNHCR said the influx was “placing an overwhelming burden on their infrastructures, economies and societies”. It once again appealed for “massive international support” to help neighbouring countries deal with the crisis. International aid agencies are also struggling to cope with the crisis, having only 47% of

funds required to meet “basic refugee needs”, the UNHCR says. “It took two years to reach the first million refugees. It took six months for the second million to be reached,” the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, told the BBC. He said officials could envisage three million refugees by the end of 2013. One of the biggest single waves of refugees occurred in mid-August, when thousands from north-eastern Syria poured over the border into Iraqi Kurdistan.

Iraq has the fourth largest population of Syrian refugees, with over 170,000. The UN says the conflict in Syria has caused the world’s worst refugee crisis for 20 years, with numbers not seen since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. More than 100,000 people are thought to have died since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011. The US and French governments are pushing for a military strike in reaction to what they say was a chemical weapons attack carried out by Syrian government forces on the outskirts of Damascus on 21 August. The US has put the death toll at 1,429, including 426 children. US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel, Secretary of State John Kerry and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen Martin Dempsey are due to appear later before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. They are trying to muster support for military intervention in Syria in the run-up to a vote in Congress expected next week. On Monday a senior state department official told a gathering of Democrat politicians that a vote against military action would be America’s “Munich moment”, referring to the 1938 Munich Agreement which was seen as British and French appeasement of Nazi Germany before World War II. The Obama administration’s document seeking Congress authorisation to conduct military strikes speaks of sending “a clear signal of American resolve”, aiming “to deter, disrupt, prevent and degrade the potential for future uses of chemical weapons or other weapons of mass destruction”.

rajoy says taxes will go down within the year

Spain’s president Mariano Rajoy claims that within a year he will be able to announce reductions in taxes payable by those living in the country.

Sport

The PP leader insists that the economy is ‘on the way up’ and that he ‘will not allow anyone or anything to distract’ him from working on Spain’s financial recovery, ‘even though the socialists are trying to do the opposite’. Rajoy claims to be ‘extremely proud’ of how ‘Spain can hold its head up high’ and has ‘become a country on the way to recovery’, having ‘won back its credibility and reputation as a solvent country in record time’. He recalls that just a year ago, rumours were flying round about an EU bailout, but

that this has not been mentioned recently.

“Things are still not good, but they are better than they were this time last year,” Rajoy stated at a press conference in Soutomaior (province of Pontevedra) in Galicia. “My aim is to recover from the situation the socialists left Spain in, and I guarantee that we are going to recover from it,” Rajoy announced. He added that the job market is showing signs of recovery already, since more people have found jobs since the start of the summer, and that the number of unemployed persons – which rose from four million to six million between the end of 2011 and the second quarter of 2013 – has gone down by 340,000.

Drunk drives 16 kilometres the wrong way down dual carriageway

A woman aged 64 who caused an accident whilst driving 16 kilometres in the wrong direction down a dual carriageway is said to have been clearly under the influence of alcohol. The driver, a resident of Sabadell (Barcelona province) refused to be breathalysed when caught travelling against the traffic on the C35 in the direction of Llagostera (Girona) at around 21.30hrs on Thursday. Catalunya’s answer to the Guardia Civil, the Mossos d’Esquadra, were called out by another, alarmed driver, and found the

accused had crashed into two oncoming cars when they reached the scene five minutes later. Nobody was hurt in the collision. The woman is believed to have driven the wrong way down the road all the way from exit 9 of the AP-7 motorway to the site of the accident some 16 kilometres later (pictured), or for some eight to 10 minutes. She was arrested and charged with three offences – dangerous driving, drunk driving and refusing to undergo a breathalysing test when requested by police.

Spain stops all trade in military equipment with Egypt

Spain has suspended all arms trade to Egypt including riot protection gear and tanks, and has revoked licences for deliveries due to be made. According to a report by ThinkSpain, military equipment makes up 90 per cent of Spain’s exports to the war-torn Middle Eastern country, in particular now Egypt’s once-buoyant tourist industry is a shadow of its former self. The European Union agreed on August 21 that its member States would no longer supply arms, given that Egypt appears on the brink of a civil war, but Spain was ahead of the rest already since, when the Muslim Brotherhood was arrested on July 3, the ministry of defence began to discuss whether to cease trade of military equipment with

its Egyptian counterpart.

Licences for deliveries already issued were placed on hold temporarily, but now that the EU has decided no member State will send arms to Egypt, Spain has cancelled these altogether. The trade block includes C-295 transport planes, which are manufactured by the firm Airbus Military at its Sevilla plant and which were due to be sent out to the Middle East. In total, 10 arms delivery licences have been revoked since July 3. The decision by Spain and, later, the EU-27 was to prevent weapons and other equipment sent by Europe being used in Egypt for internal warfare.

pp councillor corner In Kiko’s statement last week he said we will be having meetings over the next couple of weeks to plan what we intend to do and how we are going to do it. I will be talking with Kiko and Ana via Julie Hawkins to do just that and as we produce something, we will inform you via this paper. At the moment, there is nothing new to report other than the fact that the contact details printed at the bottom of last weeks article were incorrect. I will not be using the previous PP email address and we will not be using the blog as stated. This does not mean that we will not have a PP blog; it is just that it will not be that one. Ten-figure sums of euros still circulating in pesetas

Nearly 1.7 billion euros in pesetas are still stashed in houses throughout the country, according to the Bank of Spain. Some 874 million euros’ worth of the old currency, which was phased out in early 2002, are in notes and 807 million in coins. Last year alone, the Bank of Spain changed 16 million euros – 2,662 million pesetas – and in July this year, two million euros were handed out in exchange for 333 million of the former currency. Around 45 per cent of pesetas as yet unchanged will never be handed in, since they are being kept by collectors, small notes or coins held by Spaniards as ‘souvenirs’, or are deteriorated or out of the country – many are believed to be in purses and wallets of onetime tourists to Spain who kept them as a collector’s item due to their minimal value if exchanged, and some hang onto their coins and notes believing that one day they may be worth a lot more money than their face value. Once the euro came in on January 1, 2002, the government – then under PP leader José María Aznar – introduced a three-month phasing-out period for pesetas, whereby they were still accepted until March 31, 2002 – after which they could be exchanged at banks and other currency outlets until June 30. In the first nine months or so of 2002, getting euro notes changed for coins was a difficult exercise because there were not enough of these about in the country. From July 1 that year, anyone who wanted to exchange their pesetas for euros had to do so in person at the Bank of Spain. The very last day upon which pesetas can be exchanged is New Year’s Eve in 2020, the day before the 19th anniversary of the introduction of the euro to Spain.

Spain to simplify Employment contracts

Spain’s Minister of Labour today announced plans to simplify the paperwork involved in hiring workers, reducing the former minefield of conditions to just 5 categories of contracts: Permanent; Temporary; Relief; Work experience and Apprenticeships. According to an article by El Pais, there are currently 41 different formulas for hiring workers in Spain, accompanied by a mass of different incentive arrangements provided by the government, such as reduced Social Security contributions. “The existence of a high number of formulae and a

Spanish woman, 28, arrested over Brit hit-and-run death on Costa Blanca

A woman aged 28 who did not have a driving licence has been caught and arrested over a hit-and-run incident leading to the death of a British pedestrian in Torrevieja (Alicante) in February. The accused, a Spanish national, is said to have been driving a car she owned when knocked down a 74-yearold expatriate crossing the C/ Rodrigo on the urbanisation La Siesta, exactly six months ago today. He was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later from his injuries. The woman is said to have left the victim lying on the tarmac and fled the scene, but police recognised her vehicle some months later and tracked her down. According to the Guardia Civil, the driver – identified only by her initials of S.P.G., tried to sell the car immediately after the accident to avoid being caught. She has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failure to provide assistance, and driving without a licence, and has been remanded in custody.

THOUSANDS OF BRITISH/EU CITIZENS COME FORWARD TO RECLAIM AN ESTIMATED £400 MILLION FROM THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT IN OVERPAID INHERITANCE TAX

• T ax loop hole means up to 40,000 Britons were overcharged almost 100% Inheritance Tax by the Spanish Tax Authorities for their properties / assets inherited in Spain • Conservative estimates put the total amount to be reclaimed by UK families at £400 million (€490 million). • However, the average reclaim amount currently being handled by Spanish Legal Reclaims is £12,000 (€15,000) • Does this affect you? Thousands of British/EU citizens have now come forward to reclaim up to £400 million in overpaid inheritance tax (IHT) by the Spanish government after the Spanish tax loop was recently discovered. With the average reclaim amount currently being £12,000, higher than the original estimated average of £10,000. Background: Up to 40,000* UK families who have been lucky enough to be gifted with an inherited property in Spain have fallen foul of a Spanish tax loop that has seen them overcharged Spanish IHT (inheritance tax) to the tune of £400 million, whilst Spanish residents paid close to 0% IHT. • The different IHT treatment between residents and non-residents recently led the European Commission to take Spain before the European Court of Justice on March 7 2012, as it is the European Commission’s belief that the current Spanish inheritance tax provisions infringe EU treaty freedoms when either the heirs or deceased persons are non-residents in Spain. • “Experts state it is very risky to wait for the ECJ ruling. It is impossible to know when the ECJ ruling will be taken and due to legal time limits cases may have expired by then and the claim could not be filed anymore.” In addition, the sooner claims are filed, the sooner people affected may get their refund. However, the Spanish IHT rules are still in force and conservative estimates based on data from the Spanish Tax Authorities has indicated that 60,000 UK families have been overcharged IHT by an average of £12,000 each in the last 8 years. However, only 40,000 are still able to make a claim due to the Spanish legal time limits, which stop claimants attempting to make a claim after 4 years from the tax payment date. Experts believe it will take 2 more years for the Spanish Authorities to amend the IHT Laws so, any non Spanish resident who inherit in the future cal also claim almost 100% of the inheritance taxes to be paid.

complex system of incentives constitute an obstacle for the small businessman,” Báñez told the congressional committee on employment. She said the technical work on simplifying the system was well underway with input from all social agents. A makeover of the hiring process has been one of the long-standing demands of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organizations (CEOE), the country’s largest employer group. Báñez said the government also plans to bring together available government incentives for taking on workers under a single legal text in order to “facilitate hiring and give legal security to workers.” The minister also reviewed the impact of the reforms to the laws governing the labor market that were introduced by the government of PM Mariano Rajoy in February of last year. Since the introduction of the changes, which made it easier and cheaper to sack workers, the number of people out of work has risen by almost a million to just under 6 million. Báñez said the growth in exports shows the reforms are working in that area of the economy, and insisted they would also bear fruit in areas related to domestic demand once the economic situation returns to normal. “Although the Spanish economy is emerging from the crisis, it is still in recession, but the export sector is creating jobs,” she said. “It is domestic demand that is pulling down economic activity and when the domestic economy returns to growth, the result of the labor reform will be evident. “If the model is working for the export sector, which has known how to benefit from its advantages, when the economy gets back to normal, the advantages will spread to the general economy.”

More than 3000 Spaniards Book One-Way Trip to Mars

An ambitious project to colonise Mars within the next 10 years has so far received 3,621 registrations from Spaniards seeking to be amongst the first humans to live on the red planet. Code named ‘Mars One’, a Dutch not for profit foundation, aims to establish a permanent human settlement on the planet in 2023. The search began for astronauts in April, 2013 and since then more than 165,000 people have registered their desire to leave the confines of planet Earth and head to the untouched climate of Mars. Aashima Dogra, spokeswomen for the Mars One project said “The Mars One Application Program is turning out to be the most desired job vacancy

in the world. People from over 140 countries are looking towards the final frontier and envisioning their life on another planet”. The foundation says the technology exists today to make this project a reality which will integrate well tested components readily available from industry leaders worldwide. Of the top ten nationalities who have registered, Spain ranks number 9 with the USA topping the list with 37,852 registrations. China ranks 2nd with 13,124 registrations whilst Brazil grabs 3rd with 8,686. Interestingly, more than 8,000 Indians have signed up for the one-way trip to Mars positioning them in 4th on the list ahead of Russia in 5th with 7,138.

To date 6,999 Brits have registered their interest to become astronauts ranking them 6th on the list. However, intergalactic British Ex-pats maybe disappointed upon arrival to Mars as it is unknown whether the Sky TV digital footprint signal will be extended to Mars or if they will have internet access. Registrations to become an astronaut on the Mars One project are still being accepted, however you’ll need to be quick as the last day for registration is Saturday, 31st August 2013. Anyone over 18 years can register for the program at apply.mars-one.com

STAMP OUT MAIL MEDDLING IN MOJACAR!

Renters of Apartado postboxes in Mojacar are up in arms about the treatment they are receiving from state run post office Correos. “A new system is in operation where every single person receiving mail in any box must have paid and be registered. They changed the system overnight in March or April after 25 or more years. Now mail is being summarily returned to sender and we are not being informed,” says Susie Mandrake, spokeswoman for a group of concerned consumers. “A lot of people are affected. We are all losing vital letters - often without even realising. Obviously it can be a matter of life or death; things like renewing insurance policies, medical appointments and prescriptions. Quite a few people have lost their pensions because of not answering official letters they didn’t receive and many are having to pay fines for not covering bills on time.” The group believes it’s important to get as many people together to complain as possible. “It’s the only way to get Correos to listen. Apparently customers are going in and grumbling at staff but few are bothering to fill out official complaints forms. We need more people to join

us and tell us their story and if necessary we will go to Europe to get this stopped. Correos say they warned us - but if so most of us never received the warning and those who did say it was inadequately worded and gave no clue as to how Correos were proposing to act. It certainly didn’t mention anything about extra payment.” Susie Mandrake points out. Furthermore, the group is outraged that even after paying the extra sums required, letters are still being returned. “It’s scandalous!” says Susie. “Staff do not seem to be

capable of working out who is and who is not licensed. It’s an ‘if in doubt send back’ policy! Obviously it’s a problem for them dealing with foreign names and titles, Mr, Mrs and of course nicknames, diminutives – there are bound to be errors and they’re making lots of mistakes. But they are treating us like milch cows – just pay up and shut up! They seem to have no intention of doing anything about the very serious traumas they are causing.” Mojacar seems to have particular difficulty in coping with the new system, according

connexions

to the group. Another bone of contention is that no warnings were issued in January for renewals and people who waited for these to appear in their box as usual were fined 30 Euros on top of the fee. If you have any complaints about any Apartado service and would like to join in calling Correos to account, please get in touch as urgently as possible with susiemandrake@gmail. com or send a letter to her at Apartado 4, Mojacar Pueblo, 04638.

Spain’s jobless total holds steady......... Spain’s unemployment total remained at 4.7 million in August, government figures show, with the jobless figure dropping by just 31 people last month. The tiny reduction means the jobless total has

now fallen for six months in a row. Spain’s unemployment rate is 26.3%, the second highest in the eurozone and only below Greece where the jobless rate is 27.6%. The eurozone’s unemployment rate stood at 12.1% in July. The lowest rates of unemployment

in the eurozone are in Germany, at 5,3%, and Austria, which has a jobless rate of 4.5%. While the eurozone as a whole emerged from recession in the second quarter of 2013, growing by 0.3%, Spain’s economic output fell by 0.1% in the quarter.

August orders for goods made in the eurozone came in at their fastest rate since May 2011, leaving factories unable to keep up with demand, according to a survey. As a result, manufacturers in the 17-country eurozone had a backlog of orders. The Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) stood at 51.4 in August, up from 50.3 in July. Any reading of above 50 suggests expansion. The figures added to better news from the UK and China earlier on

Monday. In the UK, the industry body the EEF said a survey of almost 300 companies showed an improvement in the domestic market, which has often lagged behind exports. Official PMI figures in China showed manufacturing activity in August rose to 51 from 50.3 in July, a 16-month high, allaying some fears of a sharp slowdown in its economy. Markit said that only France, out of the 17 countries that use the euro, failed to enjoy improved conditions.

Health Care For Adults and Children

Good bacteria in the gut protect obese people from heart attacks and strokes, according to scientists. A study has found a link between the medical problems caused by being overweight, and the bacterial species in the intestines. People with less of these bugs are more likely to develop metabolic disorders such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. A flora with decreased bacterial richness seems to function entirely differently to the healthy variety with greater diversity. In a report by Mail Online Professor Jeroen Raes, of Vrije University in Belgium, is quoted: ‘This is an amazing result with possibly enormous implications for the treatment and even prevention of the greatest public health issue of our time. But we are not there yet. Now we need studies in which we can monitor people for a longer period.’ Metabolic conditions are becoming endemic because of people failing to exercise and eating foods that are high in sugar and fat.It is expected obesity levels will nearly double from 400 million in 2005, to more than 700 million in 2015 – and the trend is expected to persist at least until 2030. Professor Raes and his colleagues examined the intestinal flora of 169 obese and 123 non-obese Danes and found those with low species diversity had more metabolic abnormalities, such as increased body fat and insulin resistance. Professor Raes said: ‘We were able to distinguish between two groups based on their intestinal flora: people with a large richness

of bacterial species in their intestines, and people with less bacterial species. ‘A species-rich bacterial flora appeared to function differently compared to the poorer variety. It was surprising to see obese and non-obese people were found in both groups.’ The scientists found the group with lower species richness in the intestinal flora were more susceptible to developing obesity-related conditions and chronic inflammation. The obese people in this group were more at risk of cardiovascular conditions than the obese people in the other group. The results are important because they suggest it is not only weight gain and dietary habits that play a role in the development of medical complications in obese people. In a second study published in the same journal, Professor Stanislav Ehrlich of the National Institute of Agronomic Research in Jouy-enJosas, France, showed eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can boost gut microbes. He looked at 49 obese or overweight individuals and found increasing consumption of high-fibre foods led to more bacterial richness and improved some clinical symptoms associated with obesity. The finding supports previous research linking diet composition to the structure of gut microbe populations - and suggests a permanent change may be achieved through adopting an appropriate diet.

feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV). These viruses are very common and vaccination will protect your cat against prolonged illness, but because there are many different strains of cat ‘flu the vaccine will not totally eradicate the threat. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) - a vaccination must for outdoor cats FeLV is a lifelong infection and unfortunately most cats will die within three years of diagnosis, usually from a subsequent disease like leukaemia, lymphoma (tumors) or progressive anaemia. It is not an airborn disease and can only be passed on via direct contact between cats (usually by saliva or bites). Because of the serious nature of the disease, CP recommends FeLV vaccination. Feline chlamydophilosis - depends on your circumstances This bacterium, which causes conjunctivitis in cats, can’t survive in the atmosphere and is thus spread by direct contact between cats (affecting multi-cat households and kittens predominantly). Your vet will discuss your situation and advise as to whether this vaccine is necessary.

Vaccination

Routine vaccination has greatly reduced the extent of several feline diseases (including some that can prove fatal). It is vital that your cat has all the necessary vaccinations and boosters.

What vaccines does my cat need?

Cats Protection, as a member of The Cat Group, recommends vaccines for the following feline diseases: Feline infectious enteritis (FIE) - a vaccination must Feline infectious enteritis (a severe and often fatal gut infection) is caused by the feline parvovirus (or feline panleukopenia virus). Vaccination against FIE has been very successful. Unvaccinated cats are at great risk because the virus is widespread in the environment. This comparatively insignificant item in the Hobart (Australia) Mercury, published on Thursday October 4th 1942, first alerted the World to the massacre, during the previous month, of a number of Missionaries in Papua New Guinea, who, in the face of Japanese advances, had opted to stay in the territory and carry on their work, regardless of the consequences. It later transpired that in all, some 330 church workers, primarily occupied in offering medical care to the indigenous population, and none armed or in any way involved in the war, had been executed by the Japanese during that fateful September as they prepared to move south from their beachhead at Gona, along the Kokoda Trail towards the capital, Port Moresby. Many, both men and women, were brutally and publicly beheaded in a demonstration to the Papuan people that the Christian God was impotent, unable to save these European adventurers; whose amazing sacrifice, has recently been recognised in a decision to commemorate the Martyrs of Papua New Guinea each year on September 2nd, the date on which these atrocities is believed to have started. For myself, this story has a particular resonance, as for a while in the late seventies I lived and worked in Papua and was able to visit many remote areas of this Country, including sections of the Kokoda Trail, which even then still abounded with evidence of those times, with numerous graves and wrecks of military equipment littering the jungle. And, contrary to the intentions of the invading army, the evidence from the many local people we met suggested that most Papuans had found the quiet submission and devotion of these Christian martyrs clear evidence of the truth and value of their faith. So I believe there is much we can learn from these twentieth century martyrs; their dedication, their commitment to their cause and their willingness to put service and the welfare of others above their own wellbeing. If only I could have a fraction of their faith! Further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org . Q:

I understand that if I sell my property I needtothink about the following expenses: solicitors fee, capital gains tax and plusvalía tax. What is plusvalía tax , and how is it calculated? A . Up to recently this was a small tax when you sold or inherited , but now it can be a high amount and needs to be considered before the transaction. It is charged on the transfer of ownership of a property by sale, inheritance etc. . This tax is a local tax charged by each municipality on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district land and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax. It is important to realize that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely between neighbouring municipalities. The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”.The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant. Calculation: The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership (up to a maximum of 20 years). The higher the catastral value and the number of years of ownership, the higher the tax. Plusvalia tax = Catastral value of the land x Yearly percentage of value’s increase x Number of years of ownership x Tax rate The yearly percentage of value’s increase and the tax rate are fixed by the Town Halls. They are established locally. Up to now, when a Town Hall had updated the catastral values, usually with really high increases of the values compared to the existing ones, article 107.3 of the Law had established that on the following five years after the revision of the values, the Town Halls had to apply a deduction of 40 to 60 % to the catastral value. If a Town Hall made not contemplation of this rule teh law established an automatic deduction of 60%. However new Law passed in 2012 has changed that situation allowing the Town Halls to eliminate

those deductions, which is why a loto of people are suddenly paying much higher rates and find themselves with an unfairly high plusvalíaa tax when they sell. On a sale of a property it is the responsibility of the seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay this responsibility may be passed to the buyer, who would then have to recuperate the money form this seller. If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax. Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax, the main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning. The amount of the tax that will be charged on a transaction will depend firstly on the Catastral value of the land which the property occupies, and secondly on the length of time since it last changed hands. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. On the other hand, as the tax is charged on the value of land alone, the amount of Plusvalia Tax charged on a flat in a block which you have not owned for very long the tax may be quite modest. For those of you who are considering rearranging your financial affairs to take advantage of tax planning schemes, the amount of Plusvalia tax that may be due is one of a number of elements, which include the Notary and other fees that may be payable, which you need to consider when balancing the costs and benefits of these schemes. Depending on the amount of Plusvalia, it may be cheaper to make a gift of the property rather than enter into more complex arrangements with higher Notary and other fees. The time for paying the Plusvalia Tax is within 30 days of a sale or gift between living people, or 6 months of the date of death on an inheritance. Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”, but as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

Amongst the green, hilly beauty of the Basque country region, within the village of Azpeitia, the Sanctuary of Loyola lies along the river Urola. The highly expressive, and elaborately decorative architecture - known as a typically Spanish Baroque style, called Churrigueresque - embodies the structure of this shrine, basilica and museum that was once home to San Ignatius Lopéz de Loyola (Saint Ignatius of Loyola). The founder of the Jesuit order was once a soldier, who after having peculiar visions, turned and dedicated his life to priesthood. This order began a radical interpretation of Catholicism, which made its mark on both the New and Old World. The art museum on the site now houses various pieces of Saint Ignatius’ writings and belongings, as well as religious artefacts and objects that have been discovered over the centuries. There are also a number of separate edifices set around the grounds to commemorate other Jesuit saints. Saint Ignatius feast day is held on the 31st of July each year, and is a good time to visit the site as a ceremony and celebration is held. The large private gardens that stretch out to its west and the surrounding mountains of the region offer a pleasant and peaceful environment for visitors to the site, as well as guests staying at the affordable accommodation premises available. As its name suggests, the Sanctuary of Loyola, regardless of ones religious beliefs, indeed creates a ‘sanctuary’ for anyone. NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO CHRISTMAS

On the face of it, the idyllic Andalucía hills forming a backdrop to Estapona are an unlikely lair for a whistleblower whose revelations could threaten a country’s senate and expose the European Union to charges of cover-up and fraud. When Latvian anti-corruption dissident John Christmas rumbled Latvian state deceitfulness, his primary need was to produce and film the evidence in a secluded and tranquil area. Magic Sound Recording Studios, a company that has world-class artistes on its client base, was happy to oblige. The dissident, dubbed the Julian Assange of suspect politicians and Russian oligarchs, used the hidden studio to provide the camera work and sound track for his explosive video. Understandably, banks, Russian oligarchs and complicit politicians are not looking forward to Christmas. The dissenter was the whistleblower from Parex Bank of Latvia. The nationalisation of this bank brought about the Latvian financial crisis on November 8, 2008. Consequently, the European Union (EU) was obliged to bail out Latvia, a country as big as the Republic of Ireland. The political exile slipped into the studios on July 22. His purpose was to produce a Youtube video, Latvia EBRD Fraud 2013. It was an instant hit it received thousands of hits within days of its release on August 23. The aim is to reach 100,000 viewers and generate enough people power to expose corruption in high circles. The revelatory video is a public humiliation for moneychangers who thought they had stagemanaged what is possibly the biggest heist of public money in the history of Baltic States. Magic Sound Recording Studios is visible at the beginning of the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APZ-E-X0Cow http://www.magicsound.com/services.htm

The Hungarian government has expelled the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and European Central Bank (ECB). Ejecting banking cartels is not exceptional but often leads to war. Some nations are too big for war to be an option. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) declared financial sovereignty. Iceland threw out the bankers and filed charges. The heads of Iceland’s banking system were declared fugitives and afterwards fled to Europe. The Hungarian leader charges that previous Socialist administrations sold the nation into unending debt slavery under the terms of the IMF. Hungary’s popular Prime Minister Viktor Orban says Hungary neither wants nor needs further ‘assistance‘ from the cartels. He says, “no longer will Hungarians be forced to pay usurious interest to private, unaccountable central bankers. Instead, the Hungarian government has assumed sovereignty over its own currency. It now issues money debt free, as it is needed.” The results have been nothing short of extraordinary. The Hungarian economy, until recently staggering under bankers interest rates, has recovered rapidly. The Hungarian Economic Ministry recently announced that thanks to a ‘disciplined budget policy’ it has repaid the remaining €2.2B owed to the IMF, well before the due date. Unemployment is rapidly decreasing and now stands a tad over 10 per cent. If Spain followed Hungary and Iceland’s example by could Spain take a shortcut to a buoyant recovery and full employment?

food & drink...food & drink Giant ‘Avozilla’ avocado goes on sale

Avocado lovers can look forward to the arrival of an enormous new variety, five times bigger than the standard size, when it hits supermarket shelves tomorrow. The rare “Avozilla” – thought to be the world’s largest avocado – comes from just four trees grown by one of the world’s biggest suppliers of avocados in South Africa. But British fans of the fruit will be able to enjoy it as it goes on sale at supermarket giant Tesco this weekend. The fruit, priced at £3 each, is double the length and five times the weight of the standard variety – on average it is seven-and-a-half inches long and weighs nearly 3lb. Tesco salad buyer Emma Bonny said: “The Avozilla has a fantastic taste with a rich, juicy, buttery texture, and creamy flavour. The ripe fruit is an attractive, vivid green colour – different from the darker-coloured smaller variety.” Avocados have grown from a niche food to an everyday shopping basket favourite, she said, adding: “Avocados are one of our fastestgrowing areas in produce, with a staggering 30 per cent growth so far this year.”

Chillies: Britain’s harvest raises fans’ temperatures

Britain’s chillies are almost ready for harvest,

and the fiery foods have never been more in demand. Once the preserve of hotter climes, a dazzling array of chillies are now grown in Britain: from the mild Hungarian hot wax, to Mexican poblano and the super-hot Dorset

naga, dubbed “Britain’s hottest”.

With such choice available, producers are calling for cooks to start embracing the variety of flavours they have, not just the “heat factor”. “Twenty years ago when we started it was a crazy thing to do,” says chilli farmer Joy Michaud, describing setting up her business

with her husband Michael in 1994. “People didn’t eat chillies. People didn’t know what to do with them. It was a very exotic thing.” Now the Michauds breed chillies and sell seeds and plants online via their company Sea Spring Seeds based in Dorchester, Dorset, and have seen a big increase in interest over the years. “In the last 20 years British diets have changed,” says Ms Michaud. “And now it’s still a new crop, there’s still a lot to learn, but there are a lot more growers around.” Originating in South and Central America,

chillies were introduced to South Asia in the 1500s. Today India and China are two of the largest chilli producers in the world. In Britain, the chilli industry is small-scale but has expanded significantly, thanks to new-found tastes. “In the old days people used to ask for green and red chillies and that was it. But now they actually are asking for varieties of chillies. “They’re asking for nagas; for Scotch bonnets, for jalapenos and are asking for them by name,” says Joanna Plumb, who grows chillies and makes sauces at her business Edible Ornaments in Chawston, Bedfordshire.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

Marlon

The day was too meltingly hot for anything, even coherent thought, as we wandered through the Rastrillo when my eye was captured by a line of lacy bras, and my body’s automatic pilot steered me over to them. There are some things that a girl can’t have too many of – shoes, handbags, chocolate –or in my case, bras. Apparently I am not a commonly encountered size, according to the manufacturers of bosom support, so any display of bras will have me rooting around in it like a pig after truffles in the often vain hope of finding my size. To my amazement I found that which I sought, but bras, no matter how lacy, are only as good as their fit; I would have to try before I would buy, so off to the toilet I set with my putative purchase discretely secreted in a plain bag. I locked the door, removed my top and unclipped my current bra. Normally, when released from the tension of the clip, it will abandon my body with gratitude, but today it clung, heat welded to my breasts in an embrace more fervent than Juliet ever received from Romeo. I peeled it off, wondering that if it is that difficult to get a bra off my sweaty body, josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk how am I ever

By Jos Biggs

going to get one on? Nevertheless it had to be done. I placed the new bra back to front and clipped it up, noting that it already seemed eager to form an unbreakable reverse positioned bond with my flesh. Now it was down to tact and stealth. I ran my finger around its band, surreptitiously easing it round millimetre by millimetre until it was placed appropriately for cargo loading. I eased the load on board, and hoisted the support straps, watching for spillage as I did so. However, there was none! Everything corresponded harmoniously in size and contour - it was a perfect fit! Quickly, before it could mould itself permanently (or at least until winter sets in) to my flesh, I unclipped it, returned it to the bag, and picked up the original bra. For a second I baulked, unwilling to go through the rigmarole of yet again donning a close fitting but uncooperative garment. I looked at my unfettered reflection in the mirror. No, I thought. You can’t do that, there are innocent families out there, they don’t deserve such punishment! I struggled into my old bra, and emerged from the toilet with all safely gathered in. I am very pleased with my new bra, but one thing worries me – its label gives its brand name as Marlon, which is a male name. Was it perhaps designed to be worn by ladies of a different gender?

Old Regrets, New Beginnings At times in my life I have come across characters who had left the life they had known and simply upped-sticks and legged it to pastures new. I’m not talking about the drop-outs or the no hopers who simply decide to dedicate their feeble energies to not finding work; living off the rest of us and squatting in someone else’s property. No, I’m referring to those brave individuals who for whatever reasons, have made the decision to give up good jobs and comfortable life-styles in many cases, and attempt to rediscover themselves in a new environment. The people that most of us envy when we meet them and hear their stories, although we know that as desirable as their tales sound, we would never have the courage to do it ourselves. I’ve not come across any here in the Costa’s – places like this I imagine, are the very ones that these singular people usually want to escape from, and are the antithesis of the laid-back life styles in quieter, out of the way locations. Many years ago, I met Eric in the tiny fishing village of Polperro in Cornwall, where I was living. Probably in his late forties, he suddenly appeared behind the bar

of our favourite harbour side pub at the start of the summer, and although nobody seemed to know much about him, he soon became a popular fixture and a very good barman to boot. The population in holiday venues like Polperro increases dramatically during the summer with tourists, but also with seasonal workers taken on as temporary staff in the numerous restaurants and shops. After a particularly hectic session one night with yours truly somewhat the worse for wear on Newcastle Brown, Eric offered me a floor to crash out on for the night in the tiny one bedroom harbourside cottage he had rented. I only lived half a mile away as the seagull flies, but it was all up-hill, and if anyone is familiar with the village, they will know that Talland Hill is tricky enough to negotiate whilst sober even with emergency oxygen strapped to your back, let alone when you are three sheets to the wind. But it was over our breakfast of boiled eggs and soldiers the next morning, sitting in his cosy living room watching the sun glinting tantalisingly off the placid harbour

By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

waters, that he told me about himself. He had had a lucrative job back in Kent – he was reluctant to give me a precise location, for reasons that became obvious – and was a married man of some twenty years standing. There were no children, which had become a festering bone of contention between him and his wife, and the marriage which had been travelling down a one-way street for some time, now found itself up to its axles in mud and permanently bogged down. He and his wife had even ceased to become friends, he told me – it was a hopeless situation. Moreover, he loathed his well paid job, and it didn’t help matters that instead of a warm welcome on arriving home from work each day, he was greeted either with silence or bile from his increasing nag of a wife. He made a joke of it by describing his dinner each evening as consisting of either cold shoulder or tongue salad. According to him, he woke up one day and decided that everything would change; gave his notice at work that very morning and told his wife later the same day that he would be leaving home for some

undisclosed destination because, as he said, they both needed a complete fresh start. He had one month remaining at work and in that time he signed the house over to his wife along with the car – both paid for and with no strings attached – and made adequate financial arrangements for her. He would be in touch in due course regarding a divorce he informed her, and that was that. The day after he finished his employment, laden only with two canvas grips, he was on the train to Cornwall and a new life. I asked him how he felt, having had a few months with his new and unfamiliar life style. Were there any regrets? Absolutely not he informed me. He had never been happier or more contented. Later, I met many such types who crewed the boats that arrived in Bermuda during the biennial Newport-Bermuda race, mostly youngsters, but occasionally men and women who had opted out and had been crewing around the world for years as their preferred life style. Like Eric, they all seemed very happy with their lot and were having the times of their lives. Discarding material possessions and thumbing your nose at convention. It’s an attractive concept.

alqueria - To Manuela a daughter? John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

viewpoint

35

Alqueria was calm, peaceful and serene. It was very worrying. This high power inertia usually meant a period of suppuration. Time to renew the rivalry between the barrios, to allow mutual disdain to fester and grow. The Village held its collective breath waiting for the inevitable resumption of hostilities. Manuela’s absence from the village had left the Hill People leaderless requiring them to keep a low profile. They spent their time planning and plotting ready for her reappearance. When she did return from vacation she caused quite a stir, for she had with her a little seven year old raven haired girl. The Pueblo’s very efficient rumour generation and broadcast network soon had her down as Manuela’s erstwhile fostered daughter. Men throughout the Village checked old diaries and a dozen or so started packing ready to make themselves scarce. They began unpacking again when the little girl was registered under the name of Izar Expósita at the local school. Whether the child was a foundling or whether Manuela was simply muddying the water is still hotly debated but at least the male population was ‘off the hook’. The Village Elders, in search of evidence to validate their gossip began comparing the physical attributes of the two. The raven hair, olive skin and those deep brown eyes which can dissolve a man’s heart at two-hundred paces were wonderfully common in this part of the Iberian Peninsular. A close examination of the eyes however may have given a clue. Izar’s carried a fire reminiscent of Manuela’s, gateways to smouldering souls? The Elders then looked for similarities in behaviour and Izar didn’t disappoint. On her first day at school a badly advised boy of nine decided to challenge Izar’s authority in the playground. Izar reduced him to a quivering heap in no time at all. The simple promise of setting fire to his house and burning it and all in it to the ground did the trick. Her teacher wasn’t impressed however and demanded she made an apology. The venom with which she issued her threat was in stark contrast to the engineered angelic pose adopted for the issuing of the apology. On hearing of the fracas the Elders nodded wisely and set about perpetuating their gossip with a new found zeal. Whether little Izar will impact on Alquerian politics as much as Manuela has, only time will tell. The Newcomers however may have had a glimpse of what is in store.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

The number of emails that I have received this week having a similar theme of people in trouble with refilling ink cartridges, just to find out that these lovely people are having a joke. Each and everyone of these emails help to brighten up a wet and dismal week – thank you all :-) Windows 8 gains ground among the OS ranks! For everyone out there who thinks that this is a misprint, let me assure you it isn’t. But don’t worry! This Operating System (OS) with it’s 7% market share still drags, sadly, behind Windows 7 (45%) and the ancient Windows XP (33%). Windows Vista (which should have never been released) still hangs in there with (4%). The remaining 10% (ish) are OS’s that haven’t had the Microsoft Marketing Machine coercing computer manufacturer’s into using MS products. Steve Jobs (Apple) never had the ruthless manipulation skills of his ex-partner Bill Gates, preferring for his product to speak for itself. This it does in spades! Please remember that each successive incarnation of windows is pushed by the Microsoft Marketing Machine and, as the marketing succeeds, the previous versions lose their footing and fall down the rankings. Although, in the case of the most popular Windows XP, it does seem to be holding on, albeit with grim tenacity! Windows 8 was received by you, the everyday user, with as much welcome as a fox in the hen house. It was designed as a kludge (a quick-and-dirty solution) for both PCs and touch-screen devices, Windows 8 has proven to be less than popular with us, the users, with its Modern desktop approach. Whereas some love it, others hate it. Either way, the latest upgrade Windows 8.1, is Microsoft’s first attempt to make the OS more palatable than its predecessor. Disappointingly, Microsoft haven’t done the massive U-turn to changed the way you see your desktop back to the way it was! What they have done, is to add the much loved ‘START’ button, which then will allow you to use the ‘normal’ Windows menu system that we have grown accustomed to and added a menu option that allow you to always start on your desktop, just like most of us do now! It does have a variety of new apps (there’s that ridiculous abbreviation again!). The first is called ‘Xbox Music’ and is a replacement for ‘Spotify’ and other online music stations. The camera program has been upgraded to something more like a ‘Snap and Modify’ suite of utilities. This will allow you to take snapshots and then start to tweak them. Probably the best addition is something that other Operating Systems have used for a decade and more. The ‘Auto-Update’ of programs that you have installed onto your computer. For Example, You use a free office suite and it has just had an upgrade on the web. Normally, your program will say “Oy Fat Boy, I’ve a new version out there!”. Now, Windows 8 will do that for you will all your software whether it has the option built in or not. As I pointed out earlier, Linux has done this for 10 years and more. Having seen, and played with, the beta test version, the changes are so minor that I wouldn’t spend a bent cent on the upgrade. In fact, I would stick with Windows 7 (if you must have windows anything)! This release will be out in October 18th (supposedly!). For unbiased opinions come to the computer club at ‘Jacks Bar’! Starts at 10(ish) until 11:30(ish) and if you have computer related problems, I will be at ‘Jacks Bar’ from 12 til 4 offering a free computer diagnostic clinic. Bring your problem computers to me for a free examination. After the 5 or so minutes it takes to diagnose the problem you can, take the solution away and fix it yourself for free or I can do it but not for free :-) Have a great week For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk guernica by pablo picasso

Guernica by Dave Boling The painting which I am currently working on will be called Guernica. By means of it, I express my abhorrence of the race that has sunk Spain in an ocean of pain and death. Pablo Picasso Like the great artist, Boling painted his sprawling mural as a fictional piece, emphasising how closely-knit and struggling Basque families were irrevocably disfigured but not completely destroyed by the Spanish civil war. The story inevitably shows un-necessary human suffering and loss coupled with acts of heroism and amazing fortitude of the nobler characters who miraculously survive the atrocities during the destruction of Guernica in 1937. Even before 1937 Picasso wanted to shatter art and reshape it. Sadly, the opportunity came and in his rage he created his famous painting. He appears in the story and expresses his anger verbally to German soldiers as well as through his paintings. Boling’s characters are inspirational, solid, good and noble. Not perfect by any means but strong enough to survive the traumas of losing their loved ones, homes and livelihoods. They strive towards self-sufficiency and are family-oriented. They loved life and dancing seemed to be an important part of their lives until it was banned by Franco. The women were sensual and their dance movements were erotic: Miren and Mariangeles began spinning in mirrored orbits, doing triple kicks and turns, side kicks and turns, arms upraised and fingers snapping. With each spin, their skirts rose outward only to gather tightly when they stopped and reversed, creating swirling eddies of red satin. Angeles Ansotegui dies shortly after giving birth to her third son, Xabier. Her husband, Pascual is so devastated by her death that he loses the will to live and eventually disappears into oblivion. His eldest son, Justo, at 15, takes on a paternal role and takes charge of the farm in Errotabarri, Guernica. The boys grow up as orphans and surprisingly, thrive. Justo meets Mariangeles Onati and the chemistry is strong in spite of his arrogant and self-inflated ego. His brother, Josepe, became a successful fisherman and Xabier was encouraged to join the seminary where he played a significant role in the church and in politics. Imperfectly matched, Justo and Mariangeles were enamoured with each other and the birth of Miren complemented their happy union. Our second major family is the Navarros, typical fishermen. Eduardo (Dodo) is high spirited, outspoken and vents his anger against the Guardia Civil who are pro-Franco supporters. His brother Miguel is drawn into a skirmish when Dodo is accused of being subversive and is physically threatened. He defends Dodo and both boys go into hiding fearing arrest. Ironically, it is Xmas time, a time of peace. Even nature sympathises as the wind blew icy needles accompanied by the arthritic groaning of the frozen pipes. Dodo is taken to St Jean-de-Luz where he heroically risks his life in smuggling people into Spain then onto Portugal or Gibraltar. Miguel is sent to Guernica where he learns the art of carpentry and romantically falls head over heels with Miren, Justo’s daughter. Justo is interestingly described as

enough for trading boats to navigate the estuary to the Bay of Biscay. Across medieval Europe meetings were held and new laws signed under oak trees. In Gernika there’s been an

a cross between a Catalonian bull and a cave bear. Typically Basque. He is overbearing and his overprotective nature towards Miren makes it virtually impossible for courting. However Miguel is not put off and confronts Justo about his father’s undying love for his wife as well as the story about castrating the sheep. Surprisingly, Justo gives his approval to a marriage and the men forge a strong relationship. Migue, another heroic Basque, introduced an element of eroticism into his work because of his love for Miren. He created finer products, with greater detail and polish with lines that were subtly sensuous. Miguel and Miren were tender lovers, fully transparent: He was power, she was grace. He solid, she liquid and once their marriage had been consummated: They were both liquid. Fulfillment arrived with the birth of Catalina. Domestic bliss is short-lived and from time to time Boling drops strong hints of revolts and arrests as the civil war rages and moves dangerously close to Bilbao then Guernica. Xabier counsels Jose Antonio Aguirre who became the first Basque president and we learn a lot about the bloodthirsty rebels, hungry for Basque blood, the tortures and executions through his confessions. Lieutenant Colonel Wolfram von Richthofen was one of the many Germans supporting Franco although he disliked the Spanish. To him they were a nation of bumbling procrastinators. He lost no sleep over masterminding the complete annihilation of Guernica. Arrogant. Wicked. Without a conscience. After so much death and destruction he looked back at his handiwork with admiration and wrote: Simply terrific. Social conditions were appalling. Rationing. Hunger, stealing. Suspicion of informers. Arrests. People disappearing. Out of the depths of despair comes hope. Ordinary people with extraordinary powers of resilience and strength mentally as well as physically. It is likely Boling wanted us to admire these people and learn something from their ability to keep going. On a bench of land to the west, the symbolic oak of Guernica stands rigid and undisturbed. Somehow the rebels and Germans didn’t damage the tree, though little else escaped their influences. Symbolic of liberation and democracy. Unmoved. It seems that somethings are indestructible including man’s spirit and determination for freedom. Publisher: Picador. ISBN: 978-0330-460668

oak on the same spot since the town was founded in 1366. The first lasted 450 years being replaced in 1742. The third tree was planted in 1858 but this was replaced

in 2005 after it died from a fungus. The town gardeners have always grown oaks from the acorns and there is a stock of descendants which are given as gifts to towns and organisations friendly with the Basque region. Gernika is the traditional seat of the Biscay Province Parliament; Basque laws were passed under these oaks up until 1876 with a meeting house built nearby for this purpose. When the Basque region became part of Castille it became customary for new kings to come to Guernica to swear an oath under the tree to uphold the laws of Biscay. The symbol of the oak leaf features on many Basque logos and coats of arms. So Gernika has always held special significance for the Basque people and it’s regarded as their spiritual heart. During the Civil War most Basque regions voted to side with the ruling republicans which pitted them against the nationalists led by Franco. Northern Spain was hugely important for both sides as it has coal, iron and the subsequent heavy industry

in abundance. The nationalists were aiming to take Bilbao and on March 31st leaflets were dropped from planes across the region bearing a message from General Mola telling people their lives and possessions would be spared if they surrendered. The same day the town of Durango became the first ever defenceless civilian European town to be bombed from the air. Hundreds died and fighter planes straffed people in the streets as they ran. General Queipo Del Llano claimed over the radio that only military targets has been hit and that the priests and nuns that died had been locked by communists in the churches and burnt alive. Monday is market day in Gernika and was and still is a huge affair taking on a holiday feel. On April 2nd 1936 the town held 10,000 people; locals, market goers and also refugees fleeing the first bombings from a few weeks earlier. At 1630 hours all hell broke loss and for 2 and ¾ hours the German Luftwaffe (Condor Legion) and the Italian air force carpet bombed

the defenceless town. Wave upon wave of explosives and incendiaries rained down, with fighter planes shooting people as they ran in fear. The town was all but destroyed. The supposed military objective was to destroy the river bridge which remained untouched as were the two munitions factories. Journalists arrived quickly to the scene and reported the bombing but the Francoists denied any bombing had taken place instead blaming the republicans for setting fire to the town as they retreated. It’s estimated around 1500 people lost their lives. A few days later the town was taken unopposed. The oak tree and meeting house were luckily untouched by the bombs and locals held an armed guard around the tree to stop the victors felling it as a symbolic act against the Basques. At the Nuremberg trials Goering confessed that Guernica was used as a testing ground for the ‘total war’ bombing techniques for the war to come!

f1 : Daniel Ricciardo: Australian to

drive for Red Bull next season

World champions Red Bull have chosen Daniel Ricciardo to replace Mark Webber in the team next season. The Australian, 24, who has driven for Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso for the last two seasons, will partner triple world champion Sebastian Vettel. Team principal Christian Horner said Ricciardo was “very talented, committed, has great attitude and in the end it was a very logical choice”. Red Bull chose Ricciardo over former world champion Kimi Raikkonen. Ricciardo said: “Obviously there’s a lot of excitement running through me. “Since joining F1 in 2011, I hoped this would happen and over time the belief in me has grown.” The decision was widely expected after Webber, who is leaving F1 to join Porsche in sportscar racing next season, made it clear at the last grand prix in Belgium that the team had already decided to promote Ricciardo. Horner added in a team statement: “He’s got all the attributes that are required to drive for our team. He’s got a great natural ability, he’s a good personality and a great guy to work with. “Daniel knows what the team expects. He’ll learn quickly and it’s very much a medium- to long-term view that we’re taking in developing him. “The seat within the team is a wonderful opportunity and I think he’s going to be a big star of the future.” Ricciardo will be expected to play a supporting role to Vettel, around whom Red Bull is focused. It remains to be seen whether he can cope with the added pressure of driving for a front-running team competing regularly with rivals such as Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. In his career at Toro Rosso, Ricciardo has occasionally produced highly impressive qualifying performances but has struggled to be as convincing in races. Red Bull insiders have acknowledged that there are question marks over his ability to deliver at the highest level. Raikkonen is a proven winner but was demanding a bigger salary than the Australian, might have been less compliant if asked to support Vettel and the team had questions over his willingness to work hard on the technicalities of F1. Ricciardo added: “Next year I’ll be with a championship-winning team, arguably the best team, and will be expected to deliver. I’m ready for that. I’m not here to run around in 10th place, I want to get the best results for myself and the team. “It will be a great challenge to be up against Sebastian Vettel; I’m looking forward to that. “My aim is to finish this season as strong as possible, for myself and Scuderia Toro Rosso. Then, once the off-season is here, I’ll be fully focused on next year and the next stage of my career.” Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey likened the team’s decision to promote Ricciardo to that of his former team Williams to sign Damon Hill to partner Alain Prost when Nigel Mansell left the team at the end of his title-winning season in 1992. Hill went on to become team leader following the death of Ayrton Senna in 1994 and won the world championship in 1996.

19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador. Thursday 29th August, time for out Monthly Medal competition at Aguilon. Arriving at Aguilon at about 10.15 to be ready for our 1st Tee time of 10.40 all 24 players were casting worrying eyes at the cloud building in the disappearing blue sky. However our brave souls eagerly queued to tee off on the 1st Tee. With the 1st fairway spread out in front of the tee like a well manicured lawn our players drove their balls toward the unseen 1st green with varying degrees of success. Probably due to the large number of players on the course, Terry Caddick came prepared for delays by wearing shorts with a draught board pattern on them so he and his brother Garry could while away delays with a quick dabble at draughts. Good conditions prevailed until the last of the front 9 when we were all engulfed in a downpour, high wind and a lot of thunder but thankfully no lightning. But within half an hour the sun shone and the world seemed ok again. Nigel Greenwood and (his dad) Geoff Smith dressed in matching yellow shirts with their name on their back looked like the two twits in

the 118 adverts on television. Regardless of how he looked Geoff had a very good round scoring a Nearest the Pin on the 4th which he expertly converted to a Two and carded a Nett 78 to take 3rd place behind 2nd placed Mike Donarski with 76. The medal winner with a nett score of 75 was Alan Chippendale; Alan played good consistent golf throughout the round and was a most deserving winner. However the overall winner on the day was Garry Caddick, Garry playing as a guest (therefore ineligible for the medal trophy) and playing off his UK handicap of 17 took a Nett 71 shots to complete the course – just one over par. Very good considering he has only played the course twice before, he also won the Nearest the Pin on Hole 12. Brian(Dee) Lowden had limited success except in the Club Throwing, Nearest the Pin and the Twos competition, winning the Nearest the Pin and a Two on the 8th Hole, Being the only competitor in the Club throwing competition should not detract from his excellent 7 iron toss on the 17th of some 45 yards, straight as well!!

ANGLING NEWS WITH BEACHCOMBER JOHN Boat Fishing. A day off work gave “Palomete Ian” a chance to take his dad Sam and mate Dave out for a day’s sea fishing with ‘Orca Steve’ on a bright but blustery Sunday morning. The wind, swell and current came from the east so they anchored up in a good position on the edge of a wash-in near an old river bed where the sonar showed some decent shoals of fish. The lads dropped in and within minutes were pulling out pandoras and bogues. During the morning they hit on a passing shoal of mackerel and it was a busy, busy time catching with the lads pulling out five at a time. Ian got a good take and landed a red snapper and the rest of the crew all lost hooks to what could only have been Triggers. Those infamous big hits then nothing as their teeth bite through the nylon. It was a great morning with the lads taking a decent bag of fish home for Dave’s dad Paul to grill on the barbie! A few days later Steve took Bev, Gary and their children Lucy, Emma and Daniel out for some prawn dangling. Steve decided to anchor the boat in a position over the edge of the wash-in near the old river bed as before as the depth was only 80 to 90ft and gave the younger members a better chance of bagging a fish.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013

The decision was a good one and they were all soon catching pandoras, bogues, pickerels, mackerel and small red snappers. Little Lucy was the surprise of the day catching the most fish, most variety of fish and the biggest fish which was all down to her enthusiasm and determination, well done Lucy! Mike and Catherine who are out on holiday in Mojacar brought their children Ben, Joe, Sam and their friend Jake out fishing with Steve. They are all keen fresh water anglers back in the UK but had not done much sea angling from a boat so it was a new experience for them all. Young Ben, Joe and Sam were very keen asking loads of questions about the tackle and admired the multiplier reels and boat rods which they used for the first time handling them like they were young pros! They fished a few different marks but had the most success again in the old river bed where all the family caught plenty of fish which included small dentex bream and red snapper, pandoras, bogues, mackerel, weavers, twin and banded bream. On returning to port the lads were full of fishing chat and excitement and picked out some fish to take away and cook. A great day of fishing which reminded Steve of the enthusiasm and excitement that he felt when he was a lad. Shore Fishing. Neither ‘Tubby Jimmy’ nor ‘London Bill’ managed to catch anything worth mentioning. Coarse Fishing. ‘Baza Barry’ fished the big lake with his two English mates over on holiday, an all evening and morning session (With a sleep in between) bagged over 200lbs of carp and barbel. A few of the Los Gallardos Grumps went to Puentes near Lorca, Keith with Dave, Paul and Malcolm who were on holiday. All caught fish using pole and

It will mean a trip in person to Almeria with a friend who has a nie number and it has a 50/50 chance of working! The other loophole for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Murcia. Grillstream technology  Unique Fat Catch system  Independent Jet Flame Ignition (to all burners)  Heat Dispersers Porcelain Enamelled Steel Grills  Cast Iron Griddles  Thermometer  Warming Rack  Viewing Windows (not on 120GS)

As seen on Dragon's Den, Grillstream Technology eradicates flare-ups that can often burn food and damage the barbecue. This is achieved by having unique double Ushaped grills which stream oils and fat generated during cooking, away from the heat source. This allows for more succulent and healthier food, while still keeping that authentic barbecue taste.
