MOVIMIENTO CIUDADANO 15-M ALBOX

PHOTO: http://abcnews.go.com/

This morning , representatives of the Movimiento Ciudadano 15-M Albox made submissions to the Unidad de Protección de la Salud del Área de Gestión Sanitaria Norte de Almería Unity Health to file another complaint about the state of water supply to the town of Albox. In May of this year, 15 -M Albox has sent complaints addressed to the Consejera de Salud de la Junta de Andalucía, who gave an unsatisfactory response in that there was a good argument by the Ayuntamiento in Albox about the municipality providing an alternative supply of drinking water as set by law when the water is classified as unfit for human consumption. Specifically, Albox Ayuntamiento argument that trucks selling water passing through the streets of Albox is the equivalent of providing an alternative supply when in fact it is equivalent to going to a shop to buy bottles of water. Albox citizens are paying very high water bill to the company Gestagua for providing water which is unfit for human consumption and also are having to pay to buy water to drink and use for cooking and washing up. The complaint specified that trucks do not provide an alternative supply not only because of the need to pay In the days that follow the twice-yearly “springing forward” or “falling back” of our clocks, you can count on lively coffee-break complaints about body clock confusion, taping the wrong show, or missed appointments. How will a longer stretch of dark mornings and light evenings affect us? Moving our clocks in either direction changes the principal time cue – light - for setting and resetting our 24-hour natural cycle, or circadian rhythm. In doing so, our internal clock becomes out of sync or mismatched with our current day-night cycle. How well we adapt to this depends on several things. In general, “losing” an hour in the spring is more difficult to adjust to than “gaining” an hour in the autumn. It is similar to air travel; traveling east we lose time. An “earlier” bedtime may cause difficulty falling asleep and increased wakefulness during the early part of the night. Going west, we fall asleep easily but may have a difficult time waking. How long will it take you to adapt to time changes? Though a bit simplistic, a rule of thumb is that it takes about one day to adjust for each hour of time change. There is significant individual variation, however. How will you feel during this transition? If you are getting seven to eight hours of sound sleep and go to bed a little early the night before, you may wake up feeling refreshed. If you are sleepdeprived already, getting by on six hours, you’re probably in a bit of trouble, especially

if you consume alcohol or caffeine close to bedtime. In this situation, you may well experience a decrease in your ability regarding performance, concentration, and memory, which is common to sleep-deprived individuals, as well as fatigue and daytime sleepiness. What can you do to reset your internal clock to adapt more quickly to the time changes? Your circadian rhythm is internally generated but is influenced by the environment, behaviour, and medications. However, here are some tips: As mentioned, light is the principal environmental cue. Light suppresses the secretion of the sleepinducing substance melatonin. So it is important to expose yourself to the light during the waking hours as much as possible, and conversely, do not expose yourself to bright light when it is dark outside. For example, if you get up at night to go to the bathroom, do not turn on the light. Prepare beforehand by installing a night light. Interestingly, specifically timed light therapy may either advance or delay your sleep cycle, depending on when it is delivered. Sleep hygiene is a term used to describe those actions you can take to create sleep-friendly environments and enhance your chances of falling asleep, staying asleep, and sleeping soundly. Basic sleep hygiene includes reducing or eliminating caffeine and alcohol, exercising several hours before bedtime, creating calming rituals

separately, but because they only pass through the town of Albox and do not cater for the many districts, which are home to a significant portion of the population. In July this year, 15 -M members met with representatives of the Ayuntamiento to request copies of documents governing the granting of water management to the company Gestagua. Initially it was agreed to provide the documentation, but as the days passed without receipt, a written request was made on 18 July, requesting information on alternatives being provided to the districts of Albox. According to the law regulating access to this information, a reply should have been received within a month, however, after two months with no response they returned to the Ayuntamiento, who replied on October 7 with the following: The water is unfit for human consumption and that in June in the Pleno del Ayuntamiento there had been an approval on a ‘Proposal for approval of the agreement of the association of the municipalities of Albanchez, Albox and and Arboleas for the supply of water.’ Stating that they had transferred the request to the company Gestagua, who will evaluate whether to provide such documents. Albox citizens are helpless before an Administración del Estado which is unable to make the necessary decisions to protect their health. The Ayuntamiento de Albox or the Junta de Andalucía, should enforce the Ley de Aguas, which indicates that the water supply for human use has priority

over agriculture and industry. Albox could have drinking water from tomorrow if, for example, began to supply water from the wells of Saliente, which have connection to the municipal network. And from there, continue to obtain water from the Trasvase del Negratín, providing the proper drinking water supply, which is a human right since 2010 . If the Junta de Andalucía does not take urgent steps to protect the health of the citizens of Albox, and the Ayuntamiento refuses to provide the necessary documentation so that citizens can monitor whether the contractual relationship with Gestagua has been made to ensure the interest of Albox citizens, members of the Movimiento Ciudadano 15M Albox will have no choice but to resort to the Fiscalías de Medio Ambiente y Anticorrupción to verify the proper implementation of the laws by the persons responsible in the

iT’S ONLY 1 HOUR! before bed to gradually relax yourself (taking a hot bath for example), and wearing ear plugs and eye masks, to name a few. Also important is going to bed and rising at the same time every day. Though there is no evidence that certain diets will actually influence your circadian rhythm, carbohydrates tend to make it easier to fall sleep. It is unlikely that medications would be needed for a simple one-hour time change of the clock, but in certain circumstances, like traveling across multiple time zones, hypnotic drugs like bendodiazepines may be used. Their indication is primarily to induce sleep when desired, to get on a new schedule. Given their potential for addiction and that they can negatively affect the quality of sleep, they should only be used under the direct guidance of a doctor or sleep specialist. Interestingly, some studies show an overall reduction in traffic accidents and fatalities due to daylight-saving time changes. However, one study showed a significant

Research has shown that bizarre and fantastic dreams are rare. You’re more likely to dream about ordinary events or concerns you have when you are awake. Remembrance is a very personal thing

For members of The Royal British Legion, wherever we are in the world Remembrance is a part of our lives. The phrase “We will remember them” said at the start of every meeting is an opportunity for everyone present to remember people lost or injured in conflicts over many years. Here in Spain, we should also remember all those Spanish people who lost their lives during Spanish conflicts. Members of the RBL Zurgena Branch, have dedicated a Tree of Remembrance in La Alfoquia as a point of remembrance for everyone. Somewhere, where we can all go on any special day, to give thanks for the sacrifice of family members and friends on our behalf. The Alcalde of Zurgena Snr. Luis Raz Garcia planted the tree on Thursday 3rd October and said,

“I am pleased to be asked to be a part of this Act of Remembrance and I fully support the idea of communities becoming closer”. also in the picture are Snr. Trebalon Fernandez and Jim Simpson from the Council in Zurgena, and Mr. Ken Davies, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Zurgena and District Branch. Many other members of the Branch attended the ceremony. All hoped that the Tree of Remembrance would help to bring the two communities of Spanish and Ex-Pats closer together.

Tradition was served by Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, conducting the ceremony, which was only fit as Prince George’s great-granny, Queen Elizabeth II, is the church’s supreme governor. Another tradition was continued – the holy water is from the River Jordan and the lily font was created by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In recognition of George’s late grandmother, Diana, Princess of Wales, Will and Kate chose her close friend Julia Samuel.

‘Will and Kate chose a mixture of friends, advisers and family as godparents to guide their son during his spiritual life. The guest list included: Mr. Oliver Baker (Oliver Baker attended the University of St Andrews with The Duke and Duchess) Mrs. David Jardine-Paterson (Emilia Jardine-Paterson attended Marlborough College with The Duchess) Earl Grosvenor (Hugh) (Earl Grosvenor is the son of The Duke of Westminster)

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the choice of the Earl Grosvenor. The 22-year-old heir to the Duke of Westminster. The honour was unexpected by the chattering classes, but he has got the right connections - as the son of William’s own godmother, the Duchess of Westminster, and brotherin-law of another van Cutsem brother, Edward. Things You’ll Need ° Pumpkin ° Sharp knives ° Large spoon

1 Lay out the newspaper on your workspace and set the pumpkin on top. It is a good idea to use several layers. The newspaper will protect your workspace and make cleanup much easier. 2 Cut a hole in the top of the pumpkin, around the stem, using the knife. When cutting the hole, angle the knife to create a cone shape. This will prevent the top from falling in when you place it back on the pumpkin. Pull on the stem to remove the piece that you cut out. Set this piece aside; it will be the lid for your jack-o’-lantern. 3 Pull all of the guts out of the pumpkin using your hands and the spoon. Use the spoon to scrape around the inside walls of the pumpkin. Be very sure that you get everything out of the inside if you plan on lighting your jack-o’lantern with a candle. 4 Draw a scary face on the pumpkin using a pencil. You can draw the face of a popular monster or come up with your own terrifying design. If you are drawing your own design, think pointy, slanted eyes and big fangs, and feel free to put your own creative spin on the pumpkin. 5 Cut out the pieces of your pumpkin’s face using a sharp knife. Remove these pieces and discard them. 6 When you are finished carving your pumpkin, put a lighted candle inside and replace the lid. Say Hi to Hydrangeas HOMES & GARDENS

Hydrangea is the spectacular flowering star of the summer and autumn garden, and established plants are able to withstand dry periods surprisingly well, as long as they get a good drink regularly during the hot season. Interestingly, hydrangeas also seem to grow to perfection in coastal areas and can even withstand a few salt-laden sea breezes. They are not particular about soil conditions and seem to grow just as well in heavy clay soils as they do in sandy loams. The hydrangea most commonly grown is the large-leafed Hydrangea macrophylla, which grows in a multistemmed, tight dome of foliage and flowers. When planted fairly closely together, these plants produce a dense canopy of shade, right down to soil level, which makes them superb, weed-suppressing, ground-covering plants. And they look fantastic through most of summer. They have two distinct forms to their blooms. The one most often encountered in gardens is the mophead or hortensia hydrangea, which has a mass of coloured sterile florets that form a round head. They even grow and flower in places that receive little sunlight, although the shadier the spot, the fewer the flower heads. While they also grow perfectly in full sun, flower heads rapidly become bleached and colourless if exposed to continuous, strong sunlight. The true hydrangea flowers are seen clearly in the other bloom type – the lacecap, which have a cluster of small, fertile flowers in the centre surrounded by a ring of large, coloured, sterile florets. They grow very happily in dappled shade, especially in a spot that gets plenty of afternoon shade. Pink or Blue? Flowers can be pink or blue depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. Acidic soils produce blue flowers, neutral soils produce very pale cream florets, and alkaline soils result in pink or purple. To intensify blue tones apply a soil acidifier such as aluminum sulphate. Where the conditions are acidic, but pink flowers are desired, sprinkle a double handful of hydrated (builders’) lime around each bush in autumn. David The flower heads will turn pink, usually the following growing season. Results are most effective when plants are grown in Steve large pots.

A DIY PROJECT FOR THE WEEKEND Five steps for giving an old dresser a new look, no Botox necessary. Tools - fine-grain sandpaper (220 grit) - damp cloth - paintbrush - white paint - new hardware How To 1. Remove the hardware and put the dresser in the center of your drop cloth. 2. Grab that sandpaper and give the cabinet a quick sanding to scuff the paint and correct any surface roughness. Wipe away dust with a clean, slightly damp cloth; be careful not to soak the wood. 3. Break out the brush and paint and apply a coat. (Try

making strokes in the direction of the grain.) Let dry. Applying a second coat is only necessary if the original color bleeds through. 4. Once the paint is completely dry, find that piece of sandpaper and prepare to distress. Your goal is to achieve the subtle effect of wear and tear, not for the furniture to look beaten and battered. 5. Polish off the look by attaching stylish new knobs to the furniture. Then go ahead and marvel at your handy work. Source: allaboutyou.com

ANOTHER DIY PROJECT FOR THE WEEKEND

BEACH GARDEN IN POT

Create a coastal feeling anywhere with a miniature sandy scene. If you yearn for the beach but live miles inland, you can re-create the look easily in a pot. What you’ll need: •Low, wide pot or bowl, approximately 14 inches in diameter •Potting soil •Three small, slow-growing plants in 4-inch nursery pots •Horticultural-grade washed sand (a 1-qt. bag is enough for a 14-inch pot) •Small pieces of driftwood or other found objects Step 1: Partially fill bowl with potting soil. Step 2: Set the plants (still in their nursery containers) atop the soil, adjusting their

position as needed until you’re happy with the arrangement. Step 3: Knock the plants out of their pots, gently tease apart any coiled roots, and plant; fill in around them with more potting soil up to within an inch or two of the pot rim. Tamp the soil to firm it; water to thoroughly moisten. Step 4: Carefully pour a mulch of washed sand atop the soil. Finish with a piece of driftwood or other beachy treasures. Step 5: Set the pot on a sunny patio (light afternoon shade in hot inland areas). Irrigate once a week or so using a gentle stream of water from the hose or a watering can with a narrow spout. SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

Are you looking for somewhere to go this weekend? Sierra Nevada start of December to the end of April, and the lifts run long hours too, from 9am until a staggered closing between 4.45pm and 5.30pm. There’s lots of good skiing here, if few off-piste challenges for real experts. At Borreguiles, there’s a super-wide area for beginners, with the terraces of a number of cafés directly beneath it in case there’s need for a comforting drink. On a ridge above is a huge radio telescope (sited here on account of the clear skies) beyond which are the best runs of all, hidden away in the secluded Laguna bowl. The mountains feel very different to the Alps. Rather than craning our necks up to look at the jagged peaks, we’re soon standing on top of the highest mountains for hundreds of miles (hence the occasional wind problem), looking down to the grey hills far below. From the top lift, which stops just short of the peak of Veleta, we can see the olive groves of Cazorla in the north, Granada to the west, and, to the south, the plastic tunnels of Almería’s fruit farms and the distant sparkle of the Mediterranean. The piste map even marks the Rif mountains of Morocco in the distance; it must be the only resort in the world that can show the mountains of two continents on its map. The other key selling point of this ski area, the southernmost in Europe by a very long way, is the sun. By the time we finish skiing, it’s baking hot and crowds of people are soaking up the rays in the strip of bars at the bottom of the pistes. These bars - Cuna, Tia Maria and Parallel - are pretty much identical and don’t serve tapas with the drinks, but their terraces face the afternoon sun and straight towards the mountains, so your view isn’t blotted by the resort itself. On Saturdays you can relax in a deck chair for a few hours in the afternoon, then head back up for more skiing. From 7pm to 9pm the gondola reopens and the long, sweeping El Rio piste is floodlit for night skiing. But, for us, the pull of Granada is too great. Back in town, we are spoilt for choice for spots to sit and watch the sunset over the mountains we’d been skiing on hours

earlier. One excellent vantage point is the grand terrace bar of the four-star Alhambra Palace Hotel. This evening, we give it a miss and park up and wander into the Sacromonte district, famous for its gypsy population and troglodyte houses. The more we walk, away from the centre of town, pressing further up the increasingly steep-sided, narrow gorge alongside the river Darro, the more bucolic the atmosphere. We’re aimlessly wandering up the Verea de Enmedio, a winding cobbled lane no more than two feet wide, when we turn a corner to find a widening in the path, leaving enough space for a couple of orange trees to grow. Outside a cave doorway, a little metal table has been set up, from which sangria is being served. A few people sit drinking on a higgledy-piggledy collection of mismatched chairs. Two old gypsy women peel oranges, their skin dark and lined, their eyes dramatically made up. Two kittens play at their feet. Other people straddle the wall, looking past the Alhambra to where the entire city stretches out before them, and, beyond, to the setting sun. There’s no sign, but the barman later tells me it’s called Bar Chiringuito. I think I’ve discovered the world’s most romantic après-ski bar. Sometimes, life is perfect after all. • Extracted from White Weekends, Tom Robbins’s book on Europe’s best skiing and snowboarding short breaks, published by Bantam Press (£20). ‘A veces la vida es perfecta,’ says the advert for Alhambra Reserve beer in the middle of the luggage carousel at Granada airport ‘Sometimes life is perfect.’ As we stand wearily in the baggage-reclaim hall, life seems anything but, and yet I’m excited. We’re about to have what looks, on paper at least, like the weekend with everything. Of course, Granada is an amazing historic city, with everything that encompasses: restaurants, bars, nightlife, cathedrals and culture, and a huge choice of fabulous hotels. Less well known is that it has its own ski resort, just 30 minutes’ drive up the hill. And we’re not just talking about a couple of lowly blue runs - there are 88km of slopes and the top lift rises to an impressive 3,300m. Better still, you don’t need to take a single day off work. If you live within striking distance of Stansted, you can take Ryanair’s Friday-night flight direct to Granada, then fly home, after two full days’ skiing, on Sunday night. If you come during the ski season you get to see the city when it’s far quieter than in the peak summer months, and room rates, even at the grandest historic hotels, come crashing down. Oh, and if you fancy easing off the muscles after your day on the piste, you can head to the seaside - the beach is only 45 minutes down the road. Thankfully, we don’t have to stare at the Alhambra beer advert too long. Ours is the only

plane on the tarmac, the terminal is deserted, and our skis and bags come out almost immediately. Picking up our car takes five minutes and, after 20 minutes’ drive, we’re pulling up to our hotel in the city centre. Just over an hour after landing, we’re in our first tapas bar, glasses in hand, and, if not perfect, life is looking very rosy indeed. Next day I feel terrible, as we swing up the mountain roads to the resort. There are regular buses, but it’s far better to hire a car and drive yourself, thus also avoiding the need for airport taxis. The journey is only 31km and shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes, but only if you leave early - no later than 8.30am - to beat the crowds, which can cause traffic jams. Despite the lingering taste of rioja, vermouth and jamon serrano in my mouth, it’s a fabulous morning - the sun is just rising behind the peaks, throwing down dramatic shafts of light on to the contour-hugging road. In lay-bys, old men are opening stalls selling honey and nuts. We drive past olive and cherry trees and rows of almond trees covered in delicate pink blossom. It’s so warm and springlike that it seems astonishing we’re actually going skiing, but, as we pass 2,000m, we hit the snowline, and at 2,100m come to the Sierra Nevada ski resort. It has to be said that while Granada is one of Europe’s most gorgeous cities, its ski resort is one of the ugliest. There was never an original village here to give focus and charm, and, instead of creating a purpose-built resort with coherent styles and themes, the Spanish have thrown up all manner of modern blocks, jumbled together at random. It’s a relief to head up the lifts away from the resort, with Carlos, our instructor, who tells us we’re lucky. The previous day wind closed the lifts all day. ‘I just got in my car and drove down to the beach instead,’ he says with a grin. Carlos also explains that snow conditions are unrelated to those in the Alps. Last winter the Alps did well, the Sierra Nevada less so, but it can be vice-versa, making this a clever alternative. Because of the altitude - most skiing is above 2,600m - the season is long, running from the

Festival Medieval d’Elx Candice Parsons

This year from Friday October 25th to Sunday November 3rd 2013, the city of Elche in Alicante will host its 18th annual Festival Medieval d’Elx, as the city centre transforms into a Medieval town of historical commemoration. The city, now more than two thousand years old, holds a significant connection to the Middle Ages, which is generally believed to have been between the 5th and 15th centuries. In light of this, the festival presents its residents and visitors with an array of entertainment that enscapulates the rich Moorish and Baroque origins that have contributed to this city.

The central plaza is filled with Medieval street markets, whilst various free-roaming street entertainers, reenactments, fire displays, and passacaglia immerse the city. As an event catering to all ages and groups, a scheduled program offering entertainment and activities ranging from theatre performances, concerts, workshops, and cultural manifestations, to seminars, exhibitions, fireworks, and games for children. Often during the last few days of the Festival Medieval d’Elx, the famous liturgical drama,‘Misteri d’Elx’, is performed by local men of the city. This is creates an additional feature to the Medieval feel of the city, as women were forbidden to act during the Middle Ages. The Misteri d’Elx play is believed to have originated from Elche in the Medieval period, and commemorates the Assumption of Mary. From the year 2001, the play was declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Candice Parsons is a writer and avid Spain and Spanish World Heritage by UNESCO, and thus stands as a highlight aspect of the event. LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com INHERITANCE TAX: MAKE USE OF THE HIGHER U.K EXEMPTION RATE Q. We will shortly be purchasing a property in Spain in joint names (value aprox. 150000 euro) where we intend to stay for 3 to 4 months a year spending the rest of the year in our flat in the u.k. (value aprox. 150000 euro ). We have no children and will be leaving the estate to each other using a Spanish will. Do we have to pay inheritance tax in Spain when one of us dies? A. If you remain non-residents of Spain then the surviving spouse would have to pay inheritance tax on half the value of the Spanish estate after deducting a 16.000 euro exemption. The surviving spouse would pay aprox. 6000 euro to inherit half the property. To avoid this you need to take advantage of the fact that the exemption rate in the u.k.( 325000 pounds sterling ) is much higher than the exemption rate in Spain for non resident spouses (only 16.000 euro) One solution would be for you to leave your money in the u.k and buy the property using a mortgage from a Spanish bank . The value of the Spanish estate would then be the value of half the property minus half the mortgage and the value of the English estate would be the value of half the property in the u.k. plus half of the money that you left in the u.k. As the total value of half the property in the uk. plus half the money is less than the threshold for inheritance tax in the u.k. (325000 pounds sterling) you pay no inheritance tax. In Spain or in the u.k. As setting up a mortgage has expenses attached, other options would need to be considered before using the system above, but for this we would require further information not available on your e-mail. NON-RESIDENT INCOME TAX. If you are non-resident of Spain and own a property you must file a non-resident income tax return every year even if you have never rented out the property. Please note that the tax office has no obligation of informing you of this. Do not confuse this tax with rates (IBI), which is a local tax and nothing to do with non-resident tax. If you have never paid this tax please make an appointment to discuss the best way to deal with the situation.

take care of your pets......

Interspecies love:

A new book explores true tales of unlikely animal adoptions

‘One Big Happy Family’ by Lisa Rogak is full of heartwarming true stories of animals raising other species’ young as their own. Stories of interspecies friendships are always adorable, but they’re truly heartwarming when they involve animals adopting young outside their species and caring for them as their own. Lisa Rogak collected more than 40 such tales in her new book, “One Big Happy Family: Heartwarming Stories of Animals Caring for One Another.” From the Labrador that nurtured a baby pygmy hippo to the orangutan that helped raise a couple of lion cubs, the animal kingdom is full of such adoption stories. Or like Hilda the hen, who Small friendly kennels accidentally sat on the wrong 24hr vets service nest and ended up hatching ducklings who, thanks to pet transporting arranged avian imprinting, assumed welcome to view Hilda was their mother. “It’s not unusual for animals ministry approved to be nurturing toward any species,” says John C. Wright, Ph.D., author of “Ain’t Misbehavin’: The Groundbreaking Program For Happy, Well-Behaved Pets And Their People.” “The instinct to care for another animal can be • Your home or ours hormonal, or simply related • Honest & trust worthy to age. If they’re young, their • 5 years experience of behavior is malleable, and all types of animals they’re open to just about any experience, opportunity • References available or companion. Like humans, on request animals, for the most part, yearn for company.” Laura Moss

Energy saving measures: Lighting For the second consecutive year, as an energy saving measure, Mojácar Town Hall is going to reduce the lighting service in municipal streets. This saving measure will run from 25th October de 2013 to 31st March 2014. The turning off of street lights, which alternates, will apply in Avda. Andalucía, the road leading to the football ground, the Paseo del Mediterráneo, Calle Finisterre, Avda. de la Marina and Avda. del Palacio.

appearance to the surroundings. Continuing with this measure, commercial establishments which have unauthorized or illegal publicity signs on public streets are informed that the Town Hall establishes as the final date for their voluntary removal the 31st December 2013. After this date, those which had open disciplinary proceedings and those for which the same is initiated, will at the same time have disciplinary proceedings opened.

The reduction in the service will not affect the rest of municipal streets, since 100% illumination service is guaranteed in residential areas.

Pavements, garden areas, free space areas (21 metres from the centre of the road), etc. are some of the areas in which said signs or posters cannot be put up.

Visual Contamination: unauthorized posters on public streets

This measure is generally being well received by business people and visitors, who express the view that Mojácar has to be very careful with its aesthetic appearance, as much in the historic part as the beach area, the latter being where there have proliferated posters which negatively affect the municipality’s image.

Two years ago Mojácar Town Hall initiated a campaign to improve the aesthetics of the beach area, adopting among others, the measure to remove illegal or unauthorized posters, which give a disorderly and chaotic

HALLOWEEN Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honored. The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips. Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night. An intense and persistent fear of Halloween is called Samhnainophobia. Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum. The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be

witches, and to hear an owl’s call meant someone was about to die. According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths. The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin. Stephen Clarke holds the record for the world’s fastest pumpkin carving time: 24.03 seconds, smashing his previous record of 54.72 seconds. The rules of the competition state that the pumpkin must weigh less than 24 pounds and be carved in a traditional way, which requires at least eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth.d Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

We turned into the Hospital car park at Huercal-Overa, and began cruising the aisles with a predatory air as we searched for the last, and only, space. Simultaneously we saw it, and swooped little Del into it, like a metal peregrine falcon on to a magnetic lure. As he came to rest neatly mid-space, Pete made the discovery that the handbrake was no more – it was still physically present, but only in a decorative way. Fortunately the car park is flat, so Del was still where we had left him when we returned. It is not until you don’t have a handbrake that you realise how many times you use it, so on our journey home we called in at the garage that has ministered to Del’s needs satisfactorily in the past, hoping to make a speedy appointment for his brake to be mended. I explained the problem to a young lad whose physical perfections transcended the multi-layered grease of his overalls, and he explained the problem to his boss, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Phil Collins. Together they approached Del, swept him into the workshop, pulled the josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

By Jos Biggs

useless brake about a couple of times, and tinkered around in the handbrake well accompanied by rachetting noises. Phil Collins then departed to his computer in the office, leaving Limaria’s answer to Fernando Alonso to test the mended brake. This he did by revving Del into a racing start across the floor of the workshop, then jamming the newly mended brake on to arrest his headlong progress inches before he disappeared through a Del-shaped hole in the far wall. I watched, marvelling at his confidence in his expertise and Del’s handbrake! ‘It wasn’t working before, but it is now!’ he commented, as he unpeeled himself from the driving seat. Phil Collins was still in his office, tapping computer keys; I wondered if the length of time he spent tapping equated to the size of the eventual cuenta, so I entered, purse in hand, knowing that such instant and effective service was sure to come with an equally instant and effective bill. He rose from the incongruous surroundings of a fairly clean office, returning to the floor of the workshop, where he looked more at home. ‘No, nothing to pay’ he insisted, with much hand waving and a beaming smile, before immersing himself up to the armpits in open heart surgery on a white van. Now that’s how to win friends and influence people! Plus I can now safely park Del on the north face of the Eiger, should I choose to do so!

Harold the Conqueror and All That If you feel like a good laugh sometime, then tune in to some of current crop of quiz programmes on television. I say laugh, because I find that the choice is either that or hold my head in my hands and babble incomprehensibly. In either case, there is a strong possibility of wetting myself. I have rattled on a lot in the past about how the history of the British has been sidelined in schools back home, in favour of more ‘important and relevant’ subjects. I have bent the proverbial ear-holes of a lot of people, arguing that unless we know the history of our country, then how can we accurately place ourselves in relation to the rest of the world or understand how we got here. Indeed - how can we know who we are as individuals? A great example of this lack of knowledge (I’m being polite here) was in evidence a week or so ago when a contestant on Take On The Twisters was asked which of three historic family houses was in conflict with the house of York during the English Wars of the Roses. The three choices were:

Stuart, Lancaster and Tudor. The contestant in question was a young man in his early twenties, who declared confidently that he had achieved an A Level in history and so should know the answer. He immediately discarded Lancaster and after a little bit of pondering, decided that it was either the Tudors or the Stuarts . . . brilliant deduction Sherlock. Finally he decided on the House of Tudor. York . . . Lancaster? White Rose . . . Red Rose? Julia Bradbury teased. Nah? Forget it. Then more recently on Tipping Point, that chipper quiz-master-chappie Ben Shephard asked a vacant looking bloke, what was the name of the leader of the Normans at the Battle of Hastings. There is a choice in this game of either answering the question or passing it over to one of your fellow contestants if you are clueless, which in this case – after a bit of head scratching – is what happened. Over then to a fresh faced college student. A smile appeared on the young man’s face as he affirmed that he knew this one and gave the answer as ‘Harold’. Now I am sure that the individuals in these two examples would run rings round me in the Information Technology/Political Science/ The Theory and Practice of White Water Rafting on the Kennet & Avon Canal – stakes. But that aside I find

it appalling that a supposedly well educated British student does not know about one of the principal events in English history, that in my day was taught to us in the early years of Primary School. Until I witnessed this farce, I thought it was a done deal that if nothing else, then surely every Brit knows about 1066 and all that. Seems I was wrong. At least two out of four people – if this quiz programme is an indicator – know less about our history than a Siberian tap dancer. And in case you are wondering; it was not just a case of getting the names of the protagonists mixed up, because when this bright spark was told that the answer was William Duke of Normandy - later know as the conker – he simple pursed his lips and slowly shook his head as if to say: ‘Never heard of him.’ Gawd knows what you would get if you asked these turnips about King Harold and the Battle of Stamford Bridge which was commemorated last month. Probably some stuff about a London derby in the football Premiership. By way of confirmation of all this, the Daily Telegraph conducted a survey of its own some time ago, and asked who won the Battle of Hastings. A third of all 16-34 year olds did not know that it was William the Conqueror, while more than a fifth of those surveyed thought that we had been conquered by

the Germans, Americans or Spanish. In fairness, this ignorance was not confined to the young with 22% of the over 65 year olds questioned not being aware that the Romans had conquered Britain at one time. But come on . . . this is just an age related memory issue. We are not aware of a lot of things these days. I can’t remember, um . . . Anyway where was I . . . ? Yes and get this. Less than half of the younger age group in the survey, were able to identify Francis Drake as the victorious leader against the Spanish Armada. The rest thought it might have been Christopher Columbus, Gandalf or Horatio Hornblower. Honestly . . . Everyone knows that Hornblower clobbered the French at the Battle of Trafalgar Square.

Apart from a dishevelled beard and a Seville Hat which sits perpetually on the top of a spherical crimson faced head, Pedro el Estevado has three claims to fame. Firstly, he breeds the world renowned Alquerian Newt Hound. A strange dog evolved from the Andalucían Hound and fearless in its search for the formidable Alquerian Newt. Second. He has the most pronounced bow legs on the Iberian Peninsula. He is so bow legged that when naked his genitals appear to be in parentheses. Thirdly he has B.O. His body odour is mentioned in the UN Chemical Weapons’ Convention. When he applies deodorant his B.O. simply acts as a catalyst modifying even the most fragrant odour into a foul smelling emission. Pedro’s body odour is almost tangible. Some swear they have seen a strange glowing mist engulf him when his body juices are in ascendance. People naturally avoid him. Those who are not swift enough to take evasive action are usually buttonholed by him. These unfortunates will agree to anything just to cut the interview short. Pedro believes this is down to his eloquence in debate rather than his nauseating personal pong. The simple villagers feel rather intimidated by his powers of persuasion and so avoid him, at least this is what Pedro believes and of course explains why people avoid him. So Pedro struts about the village scattering its inhabitants before. His B.O. flowing like a malodorous veil, if it were visible it could screen the largest of convoys. Today however Pedro was in demand. Rodriquez the olive mill owner and patriarch of the Newcomers needed to speak with him. Rodriquez had taken precautions in the form of a handkerchief heavily doped with aftershave which he kept against his mouth on the pretext of having a slight cold. Pedro was overjoyed at the meeting. He listened intently to Rodriquez bemoaning the fact that the Alquerian coffers were empty after the failure of Remitbrick and Remitbright. Rodriquez, turning almost purple with the stench issuing from the open necked shirt told him of his wonder at Pedro’s powers of persuasion and how he could charm the very birds of the very trees. Rodriquez laid it on thick and Pedro lapped it up, growing in stature and stench at each new complement. Rodriquez is a man who specialises in Machiavellian intrigue and is a man who regards himself as a born leader. There was a reason for these overtures he made to Pedro el Estevado.

A reason which will become clear very very soon!

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

PLUM PORRIDGE Originally people used to eat a sort of porridge on Christmas Eve. It was a dish to line the stomach after a day’s fasting, which people used to observe for Christmas Eve, or the ‘Vigil’ as it was called long ago. Gradually, they began to put spices, dried fruits, honey etc in the porridge to make it a special dish for Christmas. Much later it was turned into a pudding, because it got to be so stiff with all the fruits and things, that they would tie it in a cloth, and dunk it into a large

INGREDIENTS: INGREDIENTS FROM: http://britishfood.about.com/

Part 1

The Story of the Christmas Cake The Christmas Cake as we know it today comes from two customs which became one around 1870 in Victorian England. Originally there was a porridge, the origins of which go back to the beginnings of Christianity. Then there was a fine cake made with the finest milled wheatflour, this was baked only in the Great Houses, as not many people had ovens back in the 14th century.

Ingredients: 1lb 2oz/525g currants 8oz/ 225g golden raisins/sultanas* 8oz / 225g raisins 4oz / 110g mixed candied peel, finely chopped 6oz / 165 glace cherries, halved 10oz/ 300g all purpose or plain flour Pinch salt ½ level tsp mixed spice ** ½ level tsp ground cinnamon ½ level tsp freshly ground nutmeg 2½ sticks / 300g butter, slightly softened 10 oz / 300g soft brown sugar Zest of ½ lemon 6 large eggs, lightly beaten 3 tbsp brandy, plus extra for feeding

La

PLUMCAKE Later, around the 16th century, it became popular to add butter, replace the oatmeal with wheatflour, add eggs to hold it together better. This became boiled plumcake. So boiled plum pudding and boiled fruitcake existed side by side depending on which ingredients the housewife used. Only big houseS had proper ovens to bake in. In the castles and fine homes, people would make a special cake for Easter, which was a rich fruitcake recipe with a topping of what we now call marzipan or almond paste. A similar cake was baked for the Christmas festivities, but whereas the Easter one was a plain cake with almonds, the Christmas one had dried fruits in season and spices. These represented the exotic spices of the East, and the gifts of the Wise Men . Such things were first brought to Europe and Britain particularly, by the Crusaders coming

back from the wars in the Holy Land in the 12th century.

TWELFTH NIGHT CAKE But it was not a Christmas cake, but a Twelfth Night Cake. Twelfth night is on the 5th January, and has been for centuries the traditional last day of the Christmas season.. It was a time for having a great feast, and the cake was an essential part of the festivities. This was slightly different in different countries, and also at different social levels

cauldron of boiling water and boil it for many hours. This turned into Christmas Pudding.

Heat the oven to 300°F/150°C/ Gas 2 The temperature is low as the cake needs a long slow bake. It is packed with sugars, fruits and brandy and if the temperature is any higher the outside of the cake will burn and the inside be undercooked. Line a 9 inch cake tin with 2 thicknesses of parchment or greaseproof paper. Tie a double band of brown or newspaper paper around the outside. This acts as an insulator and to prevent the cake from burning on the outside read more about why here. In a large roomy baking bowl mix the currants, sultanas, raisins, peel and cherries with the flour, salt and spices. In another large bowl cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the lemon zest. Add the beaten egg to the butter

mixture a little bit at a time, beating well after each addition - do not try to rush this process as the mixture could curdle. If it does curdle simply add a tbsp of flour and mix again, this should bring the mixture back together. If it doesn’t come back together, don’t fret, the cake will still be delicious. Carefully fold in half the flour and fruit into the egg and butter mixture, once incorporated repeat with the remaining flour and fruit. Finally add the brandy. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared cake tin making sure there are no air pockets. Once filled smooth the surface with the back of s spoon and make a slight dip in the center (this will rise back up again during cooking and create a smooth surface for icing the cake). Finally, using a piece of paper towel clean up any smears of cake batter on the greaseproof

wrapping, if left on they will burn, and though it won’t affect the cake, it doesn’t smell too good. Stand the tin on a double layer of newspaper in the lower part of the oven, if you have a gas oven ensure the paper is well away from the any flame, and bake for 4½ hours. If the cake is browning too rapidly, cover the tin with a double layer of greaseproof or parchment paper after 2½ hours. During the cooking time avoid opening the oven door too often as this may cause the cake to collapse. After 4½ hours check the cake is cooked. The cake should be nicely risen and a deep brown all over.

Insert a skewer or fine knife into the centre of the cake. If there is sticky dough on the skewer when you pull it out it needs cooking longer, if it is clean, the cake’s done and remove from the oven. Leave the cake to cool in the tin on a wire rack for an hour, then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely. Once cooled prick the surface of the cake with a fine metal skewer and slowly pour over 2 - 3 tbsp brandy. This feeding should be repeated every two weeks up until Christmas. The cake should be stored wrapped in greaseproof or parchment paper in an airtight tin.

Mash the meat in a bowl with a spoon, then tip in the onion, apple, red pepper and oregano (and seasoning if you want to). Mash again to mix everything together. Now mix well with your hands until the mixture is sticky and divide into 16 smallish balls. Chill in the fridge while you make the sauce. You can make them up to this stage 2 days ahead, or freeze them. Make the sauce. Soften the onion in a medium saucepan with the oil. Tip in the tomatoes and simmer very gently, uncovered, for about 20 mins. Add the rest of the ingredients except the basil and slow cook for another 15-20 mins. Add the basil and a splash of water from the kettle. Tip the contents of the pan into the food processor and whizz until smooth. Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Gently roll the meatballs in flour. Heat a spoonful of oil in an ovenproof non-stick frying pan, wipe out with kitchen paper, then add the meatballs and fry gently and slowly over a low heat for 10 mins, turning them over once with tongs. (You may need to do this in batches if your pan is not very big.) Drain off any excess fat, pour in the sauce and finish off cooking in the oven for 15 mins. Serve with pumpkin mash.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2013

More history of the world Cup play in 1944, then when play resumed they won Serie A again in 1946, 47, 48 and 1949. The Torino team were returning from a match in Portugal when their plane crashed killing all on board. The team was devastated, despite the horrific loss Torino played the rest of the season by fielding its youth team. The teams they played against out of respect also fielded their youth teams. Torino won the Scudetto (league title) in 1950 but then did not win again until 1976. Italy agreed to travel to Brazil but rather than fly they travelled by ship. The British teams were again invited to take part and the Home Nations Championships were used as the qualifying competition. FIFA decided that the top two teams would travel to Brazil. The Scottish FA announced that they would only compete in the World Cup if they won the Home Championships; they came second with England winning. So England travelled alone to their first ever World Cup. England were firm favourites having recently beaten an invitation European eleven 6-1 and they beat Chile in their first game 2-0. But calamity struck when the inventors of the beautiful game lost their next two games 0-1, against upstarts USA and then Spain. Uruguay playing for the first time since winning in1930 beat Brazil 2-1to become world champions again. The 1954 finals were in Switzerland. West Germany qualified and both England and Scotland played. These finals have the record for the most goals scored with some huge scores; 7-5 in the Austria v Switzerland quarter final, Uruguay the holders put paid to Scottish dreams by trouncing them 7-0. Then in the quarters they sent England home by winning 4-2. The final was between tournament favourites Hungary and West Germany. The Germans won 3-2 with a team made up of amateurs as professional football was not yet played in Germany. Afterwards allegations of performance enhancing drug use were made against the Germans which was likely as many in the team caught jaundice from using the same hypodermic needle at half time.

Moses Comes to the Sierra Alhamilla The Sierra Alhamilla, 15km northeast of Almeria City is a beautiful, rugged mountain range riven by deep gullies, semi-arid except for outcrops of holm oak and largely unpopulated; just the place to meet Moses!

pause for thought How rapidly time passes as we grow older! Why Easter seems like only yesterday, and yet October is now passing and Poppy Day already upon us! I often wonder what our Spanish Hosts make of our apparent infatuation with this small red flower, and from such conversations as I’ve had, many seem to be of the mistaken opinion that we’re merely revelling in the past; celebrating the achievements of a once powerful British Empire.

And as on Armistice Day we listen again to that reading from the 15th chapter of John’s Gospel: “Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends”, I’m sure that many will rightly reflect, not just on those of the armed forces who gave their lives on our behalf, but also of all those we love who are no longer with us, remembering their lives too with gratitude. And for those of us who are Christians, we will necessarily be reminded of the love of Jesus himself, the original author of these words, spoken as he prepared to give his life to win our eternal freedom from the consequences of all the wrong things we so often do. So let’s now wear our poppies with pride and gratefully remember all to whom we owe so much Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

But this of course is far from the truth. For whilst there may indeed be an element of celebration that we have been spared to live our lives in freedom, the primary consideration of Remembrance-tide is that of gratitude to the many thousands who over the years have given themselves to ensure we have that freedom. The efforts, the pain, the suffering and sacrifice of so many, not just in two World Wars, but even now as they seek to protect us from much of the potential horror of modern terrorism, surely deserves our gratitude, our donations and a little at least, of our time as we remember them on Remembrance Sunday and at the Armistice Services held on November 11th.

Moses is not the only Old Testament character currently in the area, which is the location for the filming of Ridley Scott’s epic Exodus. Based on the Book of Exodus, and based on the life of Moses, the 20th Century Fox production will portray the relationship between the prophet and the Egyptian Pharoah Ramses 1. Christian Bale is portraying Moses, who leads the Israelites out of Egypt and on to their journey to the Promised Land. Breaking Bad actor Aaron Paul will play the Hebrew slave Joshua, who goes on to lead the people onto the promised land after Moses. Joel Edgerton, from The Great Gatsby, plays Ramses 1, the Pharaoh who is believed to have ruled over Egypt during Moses’ time, and who pursued Moses and the Hebrews as they make their escape from Egypt, and came to a watery end in the famous Parting of the Red Sea. Sigourney Weaver (Ellen Ripley – Aliens)

plays Ramses mother, while John Turturro playsSeti, his father. Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley, who portrayed the Moses in a 1995 TV adaptation of the Old Testament story, this time is cast as a Hebrew scholar. After commencing in Tabernas, shooting is mainly set in the wilds of the Sierra Alhamilla mountain range, where a huge set has been built to depict ancient Egypt. Apart from the sheer size, the detail of the sculptures and the architecture created is nothing short of phenomenal. The original draft is by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, and has been rewritten by Steve Zaillian. The undertaking has secured 500 job contracts, and 43 million euros has been invested by the production company in the region. Ridley’s crew, comprising team of 400 technicians, will stay in Almería until the beginning of December, and further filming will take place in Morocco and Fuerteventura. Can Bale take on the legacy of Charlton Heston, who was what many consider the definitive Moses in the 1956 epic The Ten Commandments? On December 12, 2014, the projected release date, we will see. How to get to the Sierra Alhamilla In the west, the AL110 road leads up from Pechina to the Baños de Sierra Alhamilla. A few kilometres past the A92/N340 junction, towards Tabernas, is a track, not tarmacked, that goes into the northeast part of the Sierra and crosses it all the way to Turrillas; Just beyond the park boundaries in the east is the Níjar-Lucainena de las Torres AL102 road, which passes through some dramatic landscape in the Sierra’s foothills.

From 1934 until 1978 just 16 teams played in the finals; the 1938 finals were played in France. France got an automatic place as did Italy for winning in 1934. Spain due to its Civil War could not compete. Austria qualified but then the small matter of its unification with Nazi Germany meant that it no longer existed so just 15 teams played. Sweden progressed to the quarter finals without kicking a ball due to Austria disappearing off the map; they then convincingly beat Cuba 8-0. Austrian players were integrated into the German side with disastrous consequences as Germany were eliminated in the first round for the only time in the history of the cup. Italy won the final and then held the cup for 12 years as the 1942 and ‘46 finals never happened due to conflicts across the globe. Italy really did hold the cup as an official hid the cup under his bed in a shoe box to stop it being stolen during the war. The 1950 World Cup was held in Brazil as most European countries were rebuilding after WWII. Germany and Japan were banned from entering as they were under military occupation but conveniently for FIFA the former Axis partner Italy, qualified automatically as holders. Horrifically a year earlier a devastating air crash involving the Italian team Torino killed 31 people including 10 members of the Italian squad. Torino were the giants of Serie A football; winning the last title before war interrupted

Freeware vs Shareware vs Open Source and Why Use It

What are the differences between three models of “free” software, and does it matter which, if any, you use and is it any good? Many of us are actually confusing open source software with two other models of “free” software. So a quick definition to try and clear it up. First on the list is “Shareware” as this has the most restrictions and limitations. “Shareware” was a concept that has been around since the 70’s when I first qualified in computers. The idea is that you can download and try shareware for free, but if you use it, you are supposed to pay for it. To encourage you to “Buy after you try (which was it’s unique selling point), you were offered more “bell’s and whistles” - further functions that make the program what it should have been in the first place. Shareware is sometimes called “Crippleware” for this reason. We, the user’s, don’t have access to the source code and cannot modify it. Strangely, for something with the word share in it, there is also no community where anyone can assist and improve the software. So, shareware is “free” as in a (limited) “Free Sample” at restaurants or grocery stores. Second on the list is “Freeware”. This term has been so overused, it’s meaning is a little fuzzy! So for today, we can consider “freeware” as “Shareware” BUT software, complete and unrestricted, which can be downloaded, used, and copied without restrictions. This is at the heart of the “Free Software Foundation” (Also from the 70’s – where have we all gone wrong?). Finally, my favourite, “Open Source”. This simply means that the source code, (lines of code, usually in pseudo-english, which is processed into something that your computer can understand and follow), is available to all potential users, and they are free to use, modify, and re-distribute the source code. Legally, the “free” of open source refers exclusively to the source code! Having said that it is more usual to get the working program, ready for your system, and support in the form of; access to Blogs / Bulletin Board Services and sometimes the group developing the program! “Open source” advocates like to say that open source software is “free” as in “free speech,” which is true. Since the user has the source code, it’s also usually “free” as in “free lunch,” even if sometimes you’d have to tip the waiter to get good service or pay for the wine. Legally, the difference between freeware and open source is that you can not get hold of the source code. There is no community and no development infrastructure around “Freeware” as there is around “Open Source” software. Thus, while you can use it “as is,” there is no real way to improve it or obtain support for it. In the end, the only difference between shareware and commercial software is that you can download and try shareware for free. Like commercial software, you are ultimately dependent on the developer of shareware for enhancements and support. Next time I am going to examine the high’s and low’s of buying of proprietary software. But if you can’t wait – join me at Jack’s Bar after 12 on Friday and air your views :-) See you then. Shorts for Autumn by Various Writers

The Legacy of Lorna Lovelost by Gary William Murning

The saddest thing I think I can imagine is passing through life without some kind of impact, without leaving a legacy in one form or another. We all contribute. We enrich the lives of others in so many ways. We spend our lives trying to make sense of the world, searching for answers in striving to achieve wisdom but the only certainty in life is that one day, sooner or later, we will die. Murning’s novel explores the fear and isolation of dying in a sensitive but powerful way. It is extremely moving and based firmly in realism. Tobias Lovelost, the lemon who day after day, week after week, month after month survived on his own even after encountering disappointment after disappointment. Like the song says, you still haven’t found what you’re looking for. He was destined to be the man who didn’t say anything, the man who wouldn’t speak up for himself until he met Lorna. She instilled in him the confidence to speak his mind. His personal life, his marriage to Lorna felt wonderful. Lorna loved Tobias unconditionally. She was completely dependable and mutual respect was reciprocated. They had been blissfully married for six years and were seen as the perfect couple. Tobias couldn’t imagine life without Lorna. Meeting her had transformed him. His work was another matter. Methodical and tedious, an exercise in conformity and restraint working for a ruthless boss, Middleton, who bullied and threatened. Tobias rekindled a friendship with eccentric writer Bob Bartholomew and his passionate pumpkin of an artist, Patsy O’Connor, a very down-to-earth, welcoming person who accepted people for who they were. Bob had developed OCDObsessive Compulsive Disorder. Something very strange…A fear of open doors. Closed doors are not a problem just open ones. Jogging on Sundays became a happy ritual for Tobias and Lorna until the misjudging of one of the bollards culminates in Lorna crashing to the ground. An anxious Tobias suggested the hospital for a check-up. Lorna has a routine examination followed by scans which herald the unexpected and shocking news that Lorna has a brain tumour which has affected her sight. She can expect to live up to 12 months with surgery and chemo. Like a bolt out of the blue, the novel explores how they both come to terms with the inevitable. Tobias seems the hardest hit by it all. I felt reality kicking in-unremitting and brutally cold, merciless in its ineradicable integrity. Like a child, I wanted to clamp my hands over my ears- squeezing my eyes shut. He wanted to be innocent, not knowing, in self-denial. Living in the past meant death, living in the future was death in the present. Once he had lost Lorna he believed that his years

in the wilderness would begin again…….. Murning introduces another storyline running concurrently with Tobias and Lorna’s. It contains similar ingredients of tragedy but seeks the permission to hope for a better future. This time it is Bob’s story and begins with a lasting image of a woman falling from his apartment window when he was a child. No screaming, no yelling. Nothing. She just slowly rolled forward-toppling out and down. The truth was that the woman was not actually there. Young Bob did not see her die. His parents had been arguing before his mother finally left, never returning. The young boy had made a mental connection between the woman who had fallen and his mother’s leaving. Accident and conscious decision he called it. It became one and the same. An illusion of his dead mother added to his OCD tipped him off balance mentally and whilst Tobias is trying to deal with his own trauma as Lorna’s condition deteriorates, Bob moves on a rollercoaster of a journey to discover the truth about his mother and a woman he comes to know as Eliza Jones who bequeathed a map, a key, a photo and a letter to her son. It becomes a liberating experience for Bob, freedom from burden. A quest. For Lorna and Tobias, a return to the moors, revisiting a favourite haunt of their childhood, conjuring up wonderful memories proves to be an emotionally happy time until an image of Barghest reminds them that death is waiting round the corner and time is running out. Eliza Jones’ legacy is awesome, leaving Bob speechless and in tears. Lorna’s legacy is vital for Tobias’ future survival and happiness. Katarina was introduced to stop Tobias from falling apart. I needed you to unearth that quality within yourself. That strength and lack of indecision, the faith in yourself that only you could truly find. Doesn’t hope rely on faith, so that in spite of tragedy we are hopeful that there is something worth waiting for? When you read it you will then understand why permission to hope is so relevant and having faith in oneself is the key to the future. Enjoy. Publisher: GWM Publications. ISBN: 978-0-9570636-3-1.

Range Rover

SOURCE: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/

A few years ago, Greenpeace lambasted Land Rover for building gas-guzzling SUVs. Since then we’ve had more efficient powertrains, engine-cutting stop-start systems and weightslashing aluminium bodyshells. But nothing promises to cull emissions quite like this: the new Range Rover Hybrid, a 2394kg off-roader with a potent V6 diesel engine that emits just 169g/km – 27g/km less than today’s substantially less powerful Range Rover TDV6 and a whopping 130g/km less than the lastgeneration Td6 that so riled those greens. We’re driving late prototypes today ahead of Land Rover taking them on a trek from Solihull to India, hence the expedition graphics and roof rack.

What’s the Range Rover Hybrid’s spec? The Hybrid uses a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine which, when combined with its electric boost, yields 335bhp/516lb ft and promises 44.1mpg and 169g/km. This promises comparable performance to a TDV8 Range Rover (334bhp/516lb ft) with parsimony to shame the entry-level TDV6 (37.7mpg/196g/km). The Hybrid can also drive on electric power alone for up to a mile at speeds of 30mph or less.

Statistics How much? £100,000 On sale in the UK: September 2013 Engine: 2993cc 24v twin-turbo diesel V6, 335bhp @ 4000rpm, 516lb ft @ 1500-3000rpm Transmission: Eight-speed auto, four-wheel drive Performance: 6.9sec 0-62mph, 135mph, 44.1mpg, 169g/km How heavy / made of? 2394kg/aluminium How big (length/width/height in mm)?

There is no petrol version, Land Rover saying the Hybrid is a European-focussed vehicle rather than one aimed at the burgeoning American and Chinese markets that’ll lap up the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid. Only time will tell if that’s a mistake. The system works like this: a 35kW electric motor is packaged within the ZF eight-speed gearbox, sitting between the ratios and the engine itself and taking the place of the torque converter. Meanwhile, the fuel tank is smaller to make way for the lithium-ion battery pack, which powers the electric motor. Back off the throttle and the coasting engine charges the battery. Brake lightly and all the retardation comes from the regenerative braking system, which also feeds charge back to the battery. Brake harder and a blend of brake-pad friction and regenerative braking combines to stop you.

What are the hybrid’s compromises? Just two, as far as we can see: the hybrid tech adds 120kg to the kerbweight and the price rockets past the TDV6’s £71k and TDV8’s £78k to land right in range-topping Supercharged V8 territory at approximately £100k. But because the Range Rover was designed from the off to be a hybrid, there are no packaging compromises related to the battery pack: passenger room, boot space and sparewheel provision are all unaltered, and even the gearbox is no larger. Possible side-effects of the smaller fuel tank are also negated thanks to the improved fuel economy: the range is said to remain the same as a TDV6 at around 400 miles depending on driving style. Likewise, off-road capability is unaltered – and, as we’ll discover, even enhanced. The battery pack is shielded by boron steel to protect from bumps and scrapes; approach, departure and break-over angles are unchanged; and Land Rover claims you can even jack the Range Rover up right under the battery without consequence.

angling news with Beachcomber john

Boat Fishing. Tony, Jason and Iwent out for a morning with ‘Orca Steve’. Trolling for about two hours produced just one little tunny (Tuna) on feathers and nothing on the dead bait. There were lots of shoals of small tuna or mackerel chasing 3 inch bait fish and causing them to frantically splash about on the surface. I tried casting a butterfly jig into the shoals with no luck. Steve tried jigging mackerel feathers when they were close but again with no luck.

sport shorts With an offshore wind we were able to fish a mark we haven’t fished for a year. Anchoring in 200 feet and drifting back over a big hole we fished in 400 to 500 feet. It was good to see pouting and blue mouths back after last year’s storm and river mud that ruined this area. We also caught pandoras and Spanish mackerel. Steve got hit 5 times in two minutes by almost certainly a conger (great to see them back too) but fishing only with a mackerel trace he had little chance of hooking and landing the fish. We believe it was attacking a small fish Steve had on but didn’t want to bring up 400 feet for. The conger bit his line off in the end taking the fish, bottom hook and weight with him. Both Steve and I immediately put conger rigs down but unlucky for us the wind changed direction and took us away from the mark leaving us in only 250 feet. I did however (I think) get a take which I didn’t see when I used a 10.0 hook through the

back and under the dorsal fin of a pandora and dropped it down about 50 feet. The fish was gone when I reeled in and it certainly didn’t get off itself.A troll back to port produced nothing. Coarse Fishing. ‘Puentes Ray’ made a trip to Puentes, a beautiful morning though a little chilly at 7am. He set up in his usual spot with a waggler using corn and pellet as bait. Fishing has slowed down in the last week he thinks due to lower night temperatures. The fish are in really good shape now and putting on quite a bit of weight. He fished for six hours and bagged 30 carp mostly around the 2lb -3lb mark and a 4lb barbel. Water levels are going down now but still quite high. See photo of Ray with a Puentes barbel. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. For up to date information on fishing licenses or any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. Crazy Pinz took on Caballo Negro and possibly caused the shock of the night as they won 6-2, Ivar Henriksen bowled very consistently with a scratch average of 171. Perhaps the game of the night saw Hall y Day play against Team Finland which produced a victory of 6-2 for Hall y Day (despite Bob and Lesley Day sunning it up in The Domincan Republic) and keeps them in the prime position, Pirjo Koski bowled the evenings top female game with a 208. Los Lobos had difficult opposition

in Bar Mosquitos which was reflected in the final result of 80 to Bar Mosquitos however the 2nd and 3rd games were very close with only 11 and 5 pins respectively between them. John Larkin was top bowler for Los Lobos with a Handicap Series of 555. Mixers were pitted against The Dreamers and despite Betty and Don Galley both bowling well they unfortunately lost 8-0, perhaps Don should keep his mind on the bowling and not how Man City are doing in the Champions League. Mixers Bob Calicfie was the evenings top male scratch bowler with a game of 212

Los Bandidos had a difficult encounter against Juans’ Warriors but after a closely contested battle Los Bandidos were victorious 6-2, Steve Hibberd scoring a High Game Handicap score of 219.
