‘Solutions Yes, Demolitions No’ A demonstration calling for a solution to illegal houses in the Valley of Almanzora called today by the Association of all the Mayors of the valley under the banner ‘Solutions Yes, Demolitions No’ ,attracted some 300 people. The event, attended by many of the valley’s Mayors, came as a response to the recent demolition of two British owned properties in the nearby hamlet of Las Terreras in Cantoria, and the threatened demolition of two others. The crowd was addressed by Gerardo Vazquez, lawyer for the home owner’s pressure group, AUAN, who outlined the senselessness of demolitions without prior compensation for those who had acted in good faith and whose human rights were being violated. Mr Vazquez pointed out that in order to promote wealth, employment, social and economic welfare in the area, and reactivate the Spanish property market, demolitions must stop. He added that this problem affects not just the British, but thousands of Spaniards who find themselves in the same position and face the same unease. Helen Prior whose home in Vera was demolished in 2008 also addressed the crowd. “What good did our demolition do for Andalucia or the Spanish economy? It’s only achievement has been to bankrupt us, negatively impact many businesses as well as the real estate sector, and to give a very bad reputation to the region as a whole”. Mr and Mrs Prior continue to live in what was formerly their garage and still have yet to be compensated for the loss of their home. Mr. Vazquez put forward three proposals on behalf of AUAN. Firstly they called on the Mayors of the Valley to promote a

‘proposition de ley’ or legislative initiative to change the LOUA urgently. Secondly they called on the Mayors to put pressure on the central government to change state law to protect good-faith buyers from demolition with no prior compensation. Thirdly, the AUAN called on the Association of Mayors to support genuinely representative roundtable meetings, including all affected parties - homeowners and businesses as well as all political parties - to air opinions and give consideration to proper and workable solutions. Antonio Salas, President of the Association of Mayors of the valley and Mayor of Alcontar, then took the microphone to apologise personally to Mr and Mrs Prior for their experience in Spain. He went on to say that he was ashamed the demonstration needed to take place at all as this problem should have been resolved long ago. He gave his support to the three AUAN propositions. Finally, Martin Martos Cerdan, the President of the business association AEPA, took the stage. He said he had attended a meeting yesterday with the Junta de Andalucia, who assured him they had been working for some time on resolving the problem. He told the demonstrators that there was another meeting planned next week with the Secretary for Planning to look specifically at the problem of illegal land divisions and he was encouraged by efforts being made by the Junta. “I am against demolitions” he said. “We must all stand together”. However, on Friday evening, the Junta announced that it intends to go ahead with the demolition of the remaining two houses in Las Terreras, Cantoria.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DUVET

Yorkshire Linen has a great range of duvets to suit all seasons from big brands such as Snuggledown to our own brand made to our high specifications in Yorkshire. Regardless of the tog rating, filling or size of duvet you’re looking for we’ve got you covered.

DUVET FILLINGS EXPLAINED

Hollowfibre duvets Hollowfibre duvets are a practical choice for allergy sufferers. The hollowfibre filling is man-made and anti-allergenic, which is ideal for people who cannot sleep with feather duvets. In terms of weight and feel, hollowfibre duvets offer the same level of warmth at less weight than down duvets. Duck feather and down duvets Duck feather and down is the cheapest of the natural duvet fillings. The filling is made up of part duck feather and part duck down. Down is the layer of fine feathers found underneath the outer feathers of most water birds. It is one of the best insulators against cold, making it a popular choice of filling for duvets.

Goose down

Goose down is lighter in weight than duck down but offers the same level of warmth due to superior heat insulating properties. Geese from colder climates, such as Hungary and Siberia, produce down in bigger clusters and this filling is considered the most luxurious. To be classed as a true goose down duvet the filling must be at least 90% down, the remaining 10% will likely be feather. Goose down duvets are very durable and if cared for correctly will last for 20 years or more.

TOG RATINGS EXPLAINED

There are three essential things to consider when choosing your tog. The outside temperature, the season and your natural body temperature i.e. are you warm or cold when you sleep. A popular misconception is that tog relates to the thickness of a duvet, which is not the case. Different duvet fillings have differing degrees of thermal resistance, meaning a thick duvet with one particular filling could have the same tog rating as a thinner duvet with a more thermal resistant filling. In the UK, duvets range from 3 togs to 15 togs and are generally classified as follows: Summer 3 - 4.5 togs Spring/Autumn 7 - 10.5 togs Winter 12 - 15 togs All Seasons - 4.5 tog and 10.5 tog that can be used separately or joined together to make a 15 tog. SIZES EXPLAINED The size of your bed will normally dictate the size of your duvet. If you buy your duvet in the same size as your bed, your duvet will cover you comfortably, but if you like extra coverage try the next size up (e.g. a double bed with a king duvet). Single 135 x 200 cm Double 200 x 200 cm King 225 x 220 cm Superking 260 x 220 cm Please remember to buy your duvet in good time as stock can sometimes run low when demand is high. Certain duvets i.e duck or goose down are only available to order. For more information please call into Yorkshire Linen above Mercadona in Puerto de Mazarron or call 968 595 946.

www.soltimes.com The closest many people ever get to a Cork Oak tree will be when handling a cork from a newly opened bottle of wine. It’s amazing to think that the 5cm long wine plug was once growing as tree bark around a Cork Oak somewhere here in the Mediterranean. Eastwards from Portugal through Spain, the south of France, Italy and also Morocco stretch 2.5 million hectares of Cork Oak forests. These forests provide some of the most ecologically diverse habitats in the world. Up to 135 different plant species have been found in just one square metre of forest including 30 different types of bracken. In Spain/Portugal the rarest cat species in the world the Iberian Lynx lives in these forests and Barbary Apes live in the oak forests of North Africa. Almost all of Europe’s Crane population use the forests for shelter and breeding. The biology of the Cork Oak means that it’s more fire resistant than other tree species, the cork protects the trunk and main branches tree from any fire. Afterwards new shoots and leaves sprout quickly again from the tree and the canopy is restored. Other tree species sprout again from their bases or from seed so the oak has a clear evolutionary advantage. As well as providing a haven for wildlife the oak forests create quality soil and also reduce soil erosion from the

wind and rain is absorbed into the rich soil easily. This also reduces erosion downstream from the forests as storm water runoff is greatly r e d u c e d . Hydroelectric schemes and reservoirs benefit from cleaner water so increasing safety and efficiency. In Andalucía 150 million tonnes of carbon dioxide are stored in all its forests. Every year about10 million tonnes of CO2 are absorbed by the oak forests alone – they really are the green lungs of the Mediterranean and vital to all our wellbeing. Because it’s renewing its bark, during its lifetime a harvested Cork Oak will store five times more carbon than a non-harvested tree. The cork is hand harvested by up to 5 people per tree using small axes; a tree will be about 25 years old when it’s first cropped. The trees live for about 200 years and can be harvested every 10 years or so. 300,000 tonnes of cork is produced each year in Europe with half of that coming from Portugal. All those wine corks add up to about 50,000 tonnes with the rest used mainly for flooring, olive oil stoppers and footwear. This equates

to a billion Euros in business turnover a year and 30,000 jobs. Having worked in the wine trade and being keen on preserving our environment, I only buy wine that has a natural cork. There is a romance about opening a bottle of wine and some things should be left as they are. Plastic stoppers and metal screw tops as alternatives use up the earths finite resources and create landfill. Plus without the cork being harvested these beautiful and vital habitats will suffer. I was amongst these splendid trees recently in Grazalema, near Ronda. The cork had just been harvested, so the tannins in the newly exposed trunks made them burn bright red in the autumnal late afternoon sunshine. No wonder it’s called the ‘golden hour’ by photographers as the woods were filled with an almost magical light.

THE SPAINIAC | Castillo de Javier

In the Basque region of northern Spain, located on top of a hill in the Navarre province sits the treasure of the Jesuit order, the Castle of Javier. Dating back to the 5th century, the castle was the birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier, and was the home of several leading families during its time. Gaining the name ‘Castillo de Javier’ from the missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Francis Javier is known as the patron saint of Navarre. The construction has undergone a number of transformations in its life, as a watchtower, to a fortress, and with various sections and towers having been added to the complex. Castillo de Javier nowadays hosts a Jesuit

college, and also as a museum, preserves some of the most notable artworks, architecture, historical documents and artefacts. In particular, six large Baroque canvas paintings by Godofredo Maes, and a sculpture of Saint Francis Xavier from 1622, have drawn much attention within the castle decor. The castle welcomes much tourism in Spain. During the ‘Javierada’, in which thousands of people from all over Navarre embark on a popular pilgrimmage during the first two weekends of March each year. The castle can be visited for a general admission price of €3.25, from Monday through to Sunday during the hours of 10:00am to 1:30pm, and 3:30pm to 5:30pm.

My wife and myself are resident in Almeria. We have a house worth approximately 300,000 Euros and investments worth approximately 80,000 Euros (all in joint names). We have two children and have made a will leaving everything to each other and if both deceased, down to our children in equal shares. My solicitor in Spain says that if I decease, my wife will have to pay a substantial amount of inheritance tax because, in Andalucia the exemption of 175,000 Euros is an all or nothing exemption, and that if I inherit one euro more than 175,000 Euros, I will pay inheritance tax on everything but the first 16,000 Euros.

A.

This is correct, because if you decease, the estate to be inherited by your wife will be worth approximately 190,000 Euros putting her over the exempt amount (175,000 Euros). Because this exemption is an all or nothing system it is essential that you do not go over the limit. In your case all you need to do is leave a small percentage of the house or money to your children. If they live in Andaluciá with you then they also have an exemption of 175,000 Euros each and if not, 16,000 Euros each. In any case by leaving them a small amount you can very easily keep under the exemption limit and pay no inheritance tax. A small change to your will will in this case save you over 25,000 Euros inheritance tax.

Ford-Dunn is Spanish Champion

The final Supermoto race of the year was held at Albaida, Alicante, over the weekend and produced some dramatic racing as all of the Spanish championship titles were up for grabs. The Ford-Dunn brothers from Murcia have been in devastating form lately, with older brother Mat going into the last round with a 20 point lead in the SM Master 35 championship. Mat was taking no chances in both of his races, he knew that finishing 3rd in each race would be enough to win him the championship title. The Racing was close with the top 3 riders all capable of winning the championship battling for the lead. The battle went down to the last corner of the last lap when the rider in 2nd position crashed causing Mat who was right behind him to stall his bike as he desperately tried to avoid the fallen rider. The large crowd at the race fell silent as the race commentator went into overdrive describing the frantic action below him as both riders desperately tried to re-start their bikes. But it was Mat who kept his cool and fired his bike up first and raced to the finish line to take 2nd position in the race and give him a points lead that the others could not better, making him Spanish Champion for 2013. Anthony Ford-Dunn was racing in the premier, SM Open championship with the championship title already out of his grasp due to him missing the first two races of the season his aim was to secure 4th position in the title standings. Fresh from his wins at the previous Spanish and Catalan championship rounds Anthony was in great form but the dusty low grip dirt section was favouring his competitors on the KTM machinery and he was struggling for grip on his Supermotoland Honda. He battled hard and was one of three riders that fought for the win in each of his three races. He managed an impressive 3rd, 2nd and 3rd positions that gave him 3rd overall for the days racing and secured him 4th overall in the 2013 SM Open Spanish championship. A great days racing as he stood on the podium with the reigning Spanish Champion Francesco Cucharrera who had just secured his 5th Spanish Championship title The Brothers and their sponsors ‘Advance Moves International removals’ and ‘Stratton Motorsports’ would like to thank the many race fans and supporters that turned up to the event and experienced a great days racing culminating in both FordDunn Brothers finishing 2nd and 3rd on the podium and Mat clinching the SM Master 35 championship.

Some three months ago, several cafés, bars and restaurants, spanning 500 yards on Mojacar Playa leading up to the Indalo Hotel, suffered a spate of thefts from their respective forecourts/ patio areas. Mine hosts of the El Sitio cocktail and tapas bar, were perhaps the couple who suffered most, being knocked for six after seeing many of their shrubs, plants (many in pots), herbs and various other items had been stolen, during the middle of the night or in early hours of the morning. I reported on this, describing the culprits as ‘nasty and gutless criminals’ and that’s what they are. Almost immediately, some local residents informed me who the likely suspects might be - sunrise joggers or dog-walkers perhaps - but nothing transpired, officially, although the thieving did stop within 48 hours of my article being published! When someone tries their damned hardest to make their premises look smart and welcoming, and then get knocked ten steps backwards by some unscrupulous, plant-pinching criminals and that’s what they (YOU) are - you wonder what the world is coming to. But I can honestly say that word DID get round and those responsible ceased their activities, certainly at El Sitio. But have they moved elsewhere? I would love to hear from anyone who thinks that these thieves are still active... so too would the police. And only recently told me that a ‘few pots’ (possibly stolen) have been spotted outside properties near Las Buganvillas. We’re on the case. Meanwhile, the frontage of El Sitio is now back to its sparkling best and I would certainly recommend a visit and try one (or two) of the many superb cocktails which are available daily. The mojitos are tops in my wife’s book; she says they’re the ‘best in Spain.’ Go and try one.

ensure the infection has completely gone – and then only if there is a favourable pathologist’s report will further surgery take place. The King’s surgeon, Dr Miguel Cabanela, originally from the northwestern region of Galicia but practising at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota (USA), flew over to the Quirón hospital in Madrid to operate on the Monarch, and has been in close contact with Royal household’s head of medical services, Dr Miguel Fernández Tapia-Ruano, who has been overseeing the King’s physiotherapy and treatment during his convalescence. He will carry out the surgery on the King at the Quirón, and will bring his colleague from the US clinic, Dr Robert Trousdale, with him to assist. After the operation, the Monarch will remain in hospital for between four and seven days; this will be the 14th operation the King has had in his 75 years, and the eighth in the last three-and-ahalf years. thinkSPAIN

This is the latest in a series of operations which the King has had to have after the fitting of a replacement hip. An infection set in in the area where his replacement hip had been fitted, and he was operated on at the end of September to treat the affected area and remove the artificial joint. A temporary hipreplacement made of cement to avoid irritating the area was put in, and this is now due to be removed. This ‘temporary’ hip was designed to leak out antibiotics in large quantities and concentrated on the infected area, as well as providing the necessary mechanical action to prevent the tissues from shrinking and to allow him to walk whilst he recovers. He will then have a permanent hip prosthesis fitted, which is larger and made of a rougher material to help the bone grow. The King will undergo a two-hour operation to remove the ‘temporary’ hip. Surgeons will then clean the area and take samples for testing to

Look Good Feel Great Sometimes, things just get on top of you, and ‘Pull yourself together’ ‘Don’t be so touchy’ ‘Get a grip’ ‘What have you got to moan about’ only serves to make you realise that you can’t Pull yourself together, etc. This is the time to think about Talking Therapies. Talking therapy is for anyone who is going through a bad time or who has emotional problems they can’t sort out on their own. They can help all sorts of people in many different situations. Research shows that talking therapies work just as well whether you’re old or young, male or female, white or black, gay or straight, working class or middle class, and your educational background makes no difference either. Sometimes it’s easier to talk to a stranger than to relatives or friends, especially if they are part of the cause of your stress. During talking therapy, a trained therapist listens to you and helps you find your own answers to problems, without judging you. The therapist will give you time to talk, cry, shout or just think. It’s an opportunity to look at your problems in a different way with someone who’ll respect and encourage your opinions and the decisions you make. Usually, you’ll talk one-to-one with the therapist.

Sometimes, talking treatments are held in groups or in couples, such as relationship counselling. Although there are many different types of talking therapy, they all have a similar aim: to make you feel better. Some people say that talking therapies don’t make their problems go away, but they find it easier to cope with them and feel happier. Here are some situations where talking therapy may help.

Talking therapies can help if you have: depression anxiety an eating disorder a phobia an addiction If you’re going through a sad and upsetting time, talking therapies can help you deal with it. This could be after a relative or friend has died, after finding out you have an illness, if you feel all alone in a foreign country, missing your family, or disconnected from them, feeling like a stranger who doesn’t know how to fit in, or if you’ve lost your job.

Talking therapies can improve your quality of life if you have a lifelong physical illness. People with long-term health conditions are particularly vulnerable to depression, and talking therapies have been proven to help. Older people, especially those with depression, are as likely to benefit from talking therapies as everyone else. Depression in later life, especially over the age of 65, is often dismissed as a normal part of ageing. However, this isn’t the case and talking therapy can improve your enjoyment of life if you’re feeling low.

Results from a worldwide study indicate that a high percentage of break-ups occur due to Bad Breath! Halitosis is the accumulation of disagreeable odours emenating from the mouth. Where do these smelly smells originate? The nostrils, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract can all harbour infections which cause Halitosis, as well the ingestion of certain medication and foods. Nonetheless, 90% of Halitosis bacteria originate in the mouth. The metabolic breakdown of bacteria within the mouth, lodging in periodontal pockets or on the upper side of the tongue, produce bad breath. Dental plaque is another cause. Dry Mouth Syndrome (mentioned in last month’s article) has Halitosis as a side effect. Unfortunately, the person who produces Bad Breath is often the last to detect his/ her ailment. Loved ones should inform the Halitosis sufferer with kindness, as the truth can cause psychological trauma. 90% of Halitosis patients are transitory sufferers, and 10% are pathological. All can seek help and improvement from dental professionals. The transitory patients are those who

wake up with a bad taste in their mouth, or notice their “heavy breath” after spicy foods or heavy meals, or even after a cup of coffee or tea. The use of drugs and/or alcohol, as well as smoking are all causes of transitory Halitosis. Pathological Halitosis can be produced in the respiratory tract or resulting from cavities and periodontal disease. The periodontal patient may notice a film on the upper side of the tongue. (see photos) The solution to Bad Breath: 1) Visit the dentist and the hygienist on a regular basis. 2) Brush your teeth AND your tongue at least twice a day. There are tongue scrapers available at the chemist’s to clean the back part of the tongue. 3) Both floss and interproximal brushes are necessary for eliminating plaque and bacteria between the teeth. 4) Specific mouthwashes are available which help eliminate the problem with daily gargles of at least 1 minute. Studies have proven that Halitosis can be controlled within three months of regular treatment. Visit your dental professionals for more information.

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013

HOME & GARDEN Lighten our our Darkness Darkness Lighten With solar garden lights. Sunshine is one of the few things in life that is free, and there’s plenty of it in Spain! So why not give your garden that after-dark magic look? You don’t need to be a master electrician if you go for solar-powered lights, they are affordable, easy to install yourself and can be relocated easily. Until recently, most solar lights emitted only a dim light and were not all that reliable. This has changed, as super-bright LEDs have replaced more conventional filament bulbs. Lightemitting diodes (LEDs) create light without generating the waste heat of normal bulbs, so they are very bright, yet require far less electricity to operate. The result is a dependable, long-term “bulb” that will usually shine for the life of the product. When shopping for solar lights, it’s important to match the light to the function you want it to perform. There are three primary categories of solar lights for use in the landscape: accent lights, path lights, and spotlights. Accent lights add a pleasant glow to your landscape. Their relatively low level of illumination is designed to

“mark a place,” not illuminate an object or light a pathway. Due to their low light output, accent lights usually boast longer runtimes than other types of solar lights. In fact, it is not unusual for a quality accent light to run many nights on just a single day’s charge. Accent lights typically use efficient multi-crystalline solar cells that allow them to charge even on cloudy days or in partially shaded areas. Many accent lights utilize amber LEDs to create an even softer ambience than the standard white LEDs. Some of them also “flicker” to simulate candle light. Amber LEDs use less electricity than their white counterparts, which allows for even longer runtimes. They can be used to mark landscape hazards, such as a large rock that could be tripped over at night, or as garden features themselves. Compared to the other categories of solar lights, accent lights have the lowest light output and are the most affordable. As the name implies, path lights are meant to light paths, walkways, driveway perimeters or other small areas around your home and in your landscape. They

are often used in multiples to guide the way along a set of stairs or a dark walk. Path lights typically come with a choice of ground stakes, flange mounts and hanging hooks, to give the user a wide choice of positioning options. Most are designed to focus their light downward. Path lights may also have on-off switches, a feature that allows the homeowner to “store” the electrical charge for a special event and ensure the longest possible run time. Some models may offer options such as highlow power, coloured lenses, or timers. Solar path lights are a mid-range choice in terms of price and light output. Spotlights are the brightest class of solar lights and usually carry the highest price tag. They are designed to cast a bright beam of light on plants, statuary or entryways. That said, it is important to realize a solar task light will not perform like a standard 100watt outdoor floodlight. A high-quality solar light with good LEDs can produce a focused beam of light equivalent to a 40-watt incandescent spotlight—an impressive amount of light that’s both

clean and free. Most solar spotlights are designed so they can be mounted in a number of ways and can be adjusted to shine in any direction. Sometimes the solar panel can be mounted separately from the light, which allows you to put the panel in a place where it will get the sun, and the light where it’s needed. Spotlights are generally the most durable class of solar lights. While nearly all solar lights are weatherproof and UV protected, spotlights are often more ruggedly constructed. Solar lights that use LEDs have another little-known benefit that makes them especially well suited for landscape use. As temperatures drop, LEDs generate an even brighter light, due to their solid state design. In this respect, solar lights are superior to low-voltage outdoor lights and compact fluorescent lights, which operate less efficiently in very cold conditions. LEDs also have a lifespan in excess of 100,000 hours compared to 2,000 to 3,000 hours for the average incandescent.

If you don’t want to be cold this winter then why not consider investing in clever low energy heating by Oekoswiss Made in Switzerland, these infrared heated glass panels have many advantages over conventional heating systems – not least of which is the low operating costs of between 4 and 11 cents an hour, depending on the size of the panel. Perfect for every room in the house – the panels are unobtrusive and can be fixed on walls and on ceilings – high or low – because infrared heat does not heat the air, it heats inanimate objects and warms everything in the room – no hot air rising to the ceiling whilst feet are frozen.

he cut out t and man middle from the buy direct urer manufact

Ideal for bathrooms and shower rooms, where the infrared heat also helps to keep dampness to a minimum so it helps to stop mirrors misting on the coldest days A worthwhile investment in cosy warmth for this winter

take care of your pets...... Although there are more than 2,200 kinds of fleas, it only takes one type to cause a lot of misery for you and your pet . Internationally known flea and tick expert

Scratch, scratch!

Michael Dryden, who has a doctorate in veterinary parasitology, is a founding member of the Companion Animal Parasite Council, and has conducted research on almost every major flea and tick product on the market, offers a Question and Answer advice on how to fight fleas and eliminate ticks. Q: How did my dog get these fleas and ticks? A: The way animals get fleas is some other flea-infested animal - a stray dog or stray cat, or urban wildlifewent through your neighbourhood. The female flea lays eggs and the eggs are basically rained off into your environment. And then those eggs developed into adults and those fleas jumped onto your pet. That’s how it happened. Dogs generally get ticks because they’re out in that environment, walking through the woods or high grass, and

these ticks undergo what’s called questing, where they crawl up on these low shrubs or grass, generally 18 to 24 inches off the ground and they basically hang out. And when the dog walks by or we walk by and brush up against these ticks they dislodge and get onto us. Ticks don’t climb up into trees. That’s an old myth. They just lie in wait for us. It’s sort of an ambush strategy. They can live well over a year without feeding. Q: Can fleas and ticks cause my dog to get sick? What kinds of illnesses can she get from them? A: Probably the most common thing is, when these fleas are feeding, they’re injecting saliva into the skin. These salivary proteins are often allergenic and animals end up with allergy. The most common skin disease of dogs and cats is what’s called flea allergy dermatitis, where they bite and scratch and lose their hair. It can take only a few fleas for this allergy to become a problem. If you have a lot of fleas, since they’re blood-sucking insects, especially if you have puppies, pets can become anemic and even die with heavy infestations. Fleas also commonly transmit tapeworms

to our pets. With ticks, there are a dozen to 15 or more tick-transmitted diseases that our pets get from ticks. Q: What are the best ways to control fleas and ticks? A: Besides the flea products we’ve discussed, try to keep your home as dry as possible. I would recommend not having any carpet because carpet is a flea’s best friend. Keep the brush and weeds in your garden to an absolute minimum. Q: Are there natural ways I can control them if I don’t want to use chemicals? A: There really aren’t from a natural standpoint. Over the years, we’ve spent some time looking into the more natural or holistic approaches and as yet I’ve not found any that’s actually effective. The garlic, the brewer’s yeast, all the research shows none of that stuff works. If it did, I’d be using it. The ultrasonic devices? The data shows they don’t work. And just because something is “natural” or “organic” that doesn’t mean it’s safe. Most of the poisons in the world are actually organic poisons. Some of these citric extracts people used to use

can be fairly toxic to cats. The cats’ livers just can’t handle them. There is diatomacious earth, which is basically microscopic silicone particles that can be spread around in your carpet. They scratch or excoriate the flea larvae. But you’ve got to be a little careful. You don’t want to inhale the stuff, because now you’ve inhaled silicone particles into your lungs and where’s that going to go? There are pesticide control firms that apply that stuff appropriately, and when they do it’s very effective and it’s safe. But just make sure if you have somebody do it in your house it’s done appropriately. It’s a very good larvacidal and a flea preventive measure if it’s done correctly. Fleas and ticks are really sunlight and humidity sensitive. Most situations where we find them are under shrubs, under bushes, under porches, in shaded, protected habitats. So we should only be applying those compounds in a limited fashion under those locations. Then we must let it dry on the foliage for three to four hours before we allow our pets and our children back out there. pets.webmd.com

have fun round an open fire/ barbecue now that the winter is almost upon us? Swap the flip-flops and swimmies for trousers, boots and a cuddly jumper and enjoy the dark evenings with a bit of discrete lighting and a glass of spiced wine, and maybe some of these goodies: • Slow-roasted veggies. Roasting veggies over a fire gives them a deliciously distinctive flavour that you can’t get by roasting them on the hob. Simply cut

Are Barbecues only for the summer? No, of course not! Think of your barbecue as an open fire, and then it’s only a short step away from calling it a bonfire! It is really an open fire, simply a very controlled one, suitable for this tinder-dry part of Spain, where a real open bonfire not only needs Ayuntamiento permission, but is genuinely risky! And who says that we can’t

veggies into uniform pieces, toss with some olive oil and seasonings and wrap in aluminum foil. Nestle the foil packet in the hot coals and cook for about 30 minutes, turning occasionally with metal tongs. • Orange peel brownies. For a gourmet dessert that you can make over the fire, slice the top off an orange and then scoop out the flesh, leaving the peel intact in a bowl-like shape. Fill the orange peel “bowl” halfway with prepared brownie mix. Then place the filled orange peels on top of the grill. Let them bake for 30 minutes or until the mix looks like it has set and a fork or toothpick comes out clean when stuck in the middle. • Sausage calzone on a stick. Roasting food on a stick isn’t limited to marshmallows! For this great appetiser idea, spear a fully cooked chicken or turkey sausage link with the end of a stick. Then wrap with a piece of reduced-fat crescent roll dough and sprinkle with an Italian seasoning blend. Cook, occasionally rotating, over the fire until dough is golden brown and cooked through. • Easy cherry pie. Fill half of a pita pocket with cherry pie filling, then wrap in aluminum foil and cook, nestled in the coals until the pie is heated through, around 30 minutes. • Campfire pizza. Top a flatbread with your favourite pizza sauce, cheese and toppings. Then place on the grill and cook until cheese is melted and pizza is heated through. SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013

The plan was to sit in the sunshine and enjoy a late breakfast of toast and marmalade with a cup of tea on the front porch. I had all the wherewithalls assembled; kettle filled and on, toaster filled and on, plates ready with appropriate cutlery, cups and marmalade pot to hand and the butter, sitting on one of my posher plates, was warming itself to spreading temperature. All was neatly assembled and ready to hand on the worktop in the ordered way that would have impressed any TV cookery pundit. I had command of the situation; the component parts of the breakfast would reach readiness with split-second timing to arrive on the porch perfectly prepared and piping hot. That was until the sugar initiated the Domino Effect. I needed to replenish the sugar jar so I reached in to the cupboard above the worktop and grabbed the sugar bag. It, however, had other ideas, and elongated itself in my grasp, going from short and squat to long and thin, thereby catching the top of the coffee jar. The coffee jar tipped forward, catching the teabag jar, and together josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk they tumbled

By Jos Biggs

gracefully onto the butter plate, which bounced into the sugar jar before all four of them careened with balletic elegance on to the floor, where they shattered into a starburst of glass and breakfast ingredients. I observed the scene, and considered my options. I had enough coffee, sugar and butter to make a decent serving of buttercream with added teabags, but it would also contain a significant amount of broken glass, plus the kitchen floor is not really an ideal mixing surface. At this moment The Dog That Is Not Ours trotted in, attracted by the sounds of droppage and the possibility of Food On The Floor. ‘Out!’ I hollered, already imagining her paws cut to shreds by the broken glass. ‘But’ she said, then realised that I meant it, and outed. As there was no point crying over spilt breakfast I called the marital state of the sugar’s parents into question and set to thoroughly cleaning up, though I know that I will be finding tiny shards of broken glass in most unexpected places for at least the next 6 months! Looking on the bright side; the toast didn’t burn, due to my reflex toaster-switching-off reaction, and the marmalade wasn’t involved in the fracas. Also I have learnt never to put the butter on a posh plate! We did eventually get our breakfast on the porch, after which I went to the Chinese to buy replacement plates and jars.

Count Your Blessings and Drink the Rum

The thing about bemoaning missed opportunities is that had we taken them at the time, the good things that we have experienced in life since - the places we have travelled to and the people we have befriended - might also have disappeared. Following on from the same theme that I explored some weeks ago, I had reason to reflect on this again recently, when my wife reminded me that back in the 90’s, when buy-to-rent was all the thing and mortgages were easy to acquire, we made the decision not to dip our toes in the waters of multiple property ownership. It has always given us cause for regret in view of subsequent events and I have to hold up my hands here and admit that it was me - not wanting to spoil our mortgage free status - who had harboured misgivings. And not for the first time, we wondered just what our situation would be now had we become professional landlords. They say that one small alteration in the evolution of species, should we have the means to travel back in time,

or the minutest adjustment of a particular historical event, could have a devastating effect on the present day. Our Royal Family could now be of the House of Jagger, or man may not have become the dominant species, with humans being ruled by the dinosaurs. Come to think of it . . . Anyway with that in mind, I don’t doubt that our circumstances would be greatly transformed had we taken a different decision back then. Whether for the better or worse though, is anybody’s guess. Sometimes, with the power of hindsight, we can see just what would have occurred with a fair degree of accuracy. For instance, we were desperate to sell our Suffolk cottage back in 2003, in order to enjoy the tapas lifestyle earlier rather than later. I had been offered an interview with probably the foremost property agency in Spain, so all we had to do was find a buyer. But after three rock solid certainties from interested parties had fallen through, we took the house off the market and decided to wait for things to improve. Had we sold, our plan would have been to follow all of the good advice and invest in rental property in Spain to boost our pensions. Well, we all know now just how good that ‘good advice’ was, and I thank

By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com

the Lord every day that we were unable to sell the Suffolk property until much later. Moreover, the property company that was my potential employer – like many others – no longer operates in Spain. On the other side of the coin; way back in the mists of time, when I was a young Jack-the-lad in Bermuda, the opportunity arose to purchase a parcel of land in the relatively unknown Caribbean Islands of the Turks and Caicos. Ten acres in all - it was poor scrub land, but with ocean frontage and on the market for twelve thousand dollars. The ‘good advice’ then, was to invest in the islands in anticipation of a property boom in the near future, and Bermudians, having had an association with the Turks and Caicos for many years, supposedly had insider knowledge. It was however, purely speculative and involved a good degree of risk. The cash was no problem, with the banks falling over themselves to lend money, and my Bermudian friend and I thought long and hard about taking the plunge. But being worldly ignorant and concerned only with which party to attend on Saturday night, coupled with the reasoning that: if it’s such a good investment, then why is the land so cheap – we decided against it and ordered another round of Cockspur and ginger. Huge mistake. I mean, hyper massive.

Not the rum – our judgement! Several years later, the generous British government decided to pay for the Islands own international airport with a runway long enough to take jet liners. Result: mass tourism and an open door for all sorts of property and business opportunities. I calculated at one point – based on what I had read about the acquisition of a parcel of land in the islands by a hotel chain - that our ten acres would probably have fetched upwards of eight million dollars. In fact there was a major spread in one of the English national dailies at the time, about some of the T&C islanders who hitherto had scratched a living from the land or sea, being catapulted into millionaire status overnight. Yes, what if? But really, what does it matter. We wake up every day to the sun streaming through the windows. The sparkling Mediterranean is close by; we live comfortably and have our health. And I still have my rum.

alqueria ¡La Crisis! John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

The Domino Effect

viewpoint

35

With the USA banning the import of Remitroot and its associated products Alquerian fortunes fell to an all time low. Rodriquez had already tried and failed in a coup attempt involving the malodorous Pedro. Alqueria was losing its will and momentum leaving itself open to reactionaries. The Alquerian Government should be in crisis but its inertia was almost total, it was suffocating. Alqueria’s driving force, Manuela, had been enjoying quality time with her daughter Izar and neglecting affairs of state. The vultures were gathering. Countries that coveted the Remitroot crop saw Alqueria as a weakened nation. Even the European Union looked with envious eyes towards the crippled Pueblo. Although Alqueria isn’t technically in the EU, certain northern European countries pressed for an exception and offered the Village Republic a bailout package. The offer was refused, even the despondent and weary Alquerian establishment didn’t fall for that one, even Loco Paco saw through it. In times of crisis a leader usually comes to the fore and rallies the population. Alqueria waited, and waited. It was about the time when the weather breaks and rain signifies the coming Winter albeit short and temperate when a lone figure pushed his way into the Town Hall. The Town Hall served as the Parliament building of Alqueria the seat of power. If the Alquerian establishment could really be said to have power that is. Destello Gonzalo, estranged from the village since boyhood now returned as a man. Close cropped raven hair, glistening white teeth and a sparkle in his eyes which suggested action tempered with calmness. Girls swooned and men showed due deference in his presence. Manuela was enchanted and hung on his every word. His impassioned speeches and rousing calls for immediate action earned him the epithet of El Pasionario among the women folk. He addressed the entire village from a soap box in the Plaza pleading for all Alquerian people to be united. To put their shoulders to the grindstone and through hard work, blood and sweat build a utopia within the borders of Alqueria. The women of the Village cheered and applauded, some fainted, while others threw items of discarded underwear in his direction. The men hated him on first sight. They opted for the second option to revive the economy. They would simply print money with nothing to back it and let future generations sort out the mess. It had worked in the past so there was no reason why it shouldn’t work again. The presses of the Alquerian mint worked none stop for two whole weeks.

Get off your lazy backsides

and get to ‘LaVida’ tomorrow and support the people, me included, who month after month put themselves out for you! Now that I have your attention! For the past week I’ve been unsuccessfully looking for something, of an appropriate level, to write about. Then I watched an advert about “Google”. My first reaction was “Google! What on earth do they need to advertise for?” Aren’t they are the number 1 search destination for the vast majority of people wanting to do searches on the internet, followed by “Yahoo” and then others? Having the largest market share of any product or service generally implies that you also have the greatest available wealth base. Just look at Microsoft’s Bill Gates, the richest man in America for the past 20 years. Yep, I did say 20 years! If Google have this financial base, where do they get it from? To start with they use their web search facilities to advertise product and services of anyone who will pay them, which, in business is right and proper as this is what provides them with food on their tables (albeit better food and larger quantities than most people in the rest of the world). Next, they have now branched out to include their own browser (chrome), their own Operating System (Android - for which they hold the ‘rights’ and which is an adaptation of the free Linux OS, that allows for free access to everyone! But that must be another discussion at another time), they have got a tablet and separate phone, both called ‘Nexus’ which runs the aforementioned OS. They have a depository of software, some free, but with paid for adverts and others paid for but without the adverts. These apps (another appalling contraction that has crept insidiously into the computer vocabulary) are inexpensive and although hugely limited in what they can do, are good value for money. Were you aware that android is on more devices (phones, tablets, tv recorders and tuners, etc.) than any other OS? They have succeeded where Microsoft have failed. Not necessarily a good thing! But where does need end and greed begin? Bill Gates donates unfathomably huge amounts of money to charities which benefit his needs, probably from the change in his pockets. But bitchiness aside, he is a great philanthropist and has also used his money to help other businesses and individuals get off the ground! Google doesn’t seem to be matching, even in a much smaller way, Uncle Bill’s business practices while, paradoxically, adopting the Microsoft’s previous ‘Rob everyone blind and them sue them for the privilege’ philosophy. So, where does that leave us? It leaves us with three thoughts. Don’t believe anything you are told, even from me, without double checking and checking again. Remember the parable of the tired sparrow (see me Thursday for an explanation). Without input there can be no progression, we will stand and wait! See you at Jack’s Friday afternoon. CAM bank former ‘top two’ jailed with 1.9-million-euro bail release CAM bank former ‘top two’ jailed with 1.9-million-euro bail release Former chief executive of the CAM bank Roberto López Abad has been imprisoned in Madrid’s Soto del Real prison for an alleged multi-million swindle he and other members of the board are accused of, subject to a 1.5million-euro bail release. His second-in-command, head of commercial banking Daniel Gil, was also jailed, but has paid his bail bond of 400,000 euros. He has now been released, but his passport has been confiscated by the court and he has to report to the judge every two weeks. López Abad is only the second bank CEO in modern Spanish history to be jailed, the previous being Miguel Blesa, former chairman of the Caja Madrid – since renamed Bankia after a government bail-out and merger with Bancaja. However Blesa was later released and the judge reprimanded after technicalities showed that he should not

have been remanded in custody. CAM bank bosses are said to have used the sales and purchase of hotels, apartment blocks and land in México and the Dominican Republic as a front for siphoning money out of the company – and they reportedly planned to flee to the Caribbean island of Curaçao when they had lined their pockets to their satisfaction. They had already ‘hidden’ the proceeds of the operation – some 247 million euros – in an offshore account on the island, and during the tax years of 2009, 2010 and 2011, they are said to have avoided paying a minimum of five million euros in tax. The Comunidad Valenciana-based bank did not have the capital to continue to survive after these purchases were made, and the board of directors is thought to have knowingly proceeded and left millions of customers suffering losses. thinkSPAIN

Petrol and diesel go down in price for the eighth week running Petrol prices have gone down again, reaching an average of 1.383 euros a litre – a fall of 1.2 per cent since January and 6.3 per cent below the maximum price seen this year, which was in mid-September. But fuel is still 1.4 per cent more expensive than it was at the same time last year, according to the European Union’s Petrol Bulletin. Diesel has also fallen by 0.6 per cent in price to 1.338 euros per litre – compared to this year’s high of 1.40 euros in mid-September. The lowest price of diesel this year was at the end of April, when it fell to 1.304 euros per litre. Petrol and diesel prices have been falling consistently for the last eight weeks due to a three-dollar reduction in the cost of Brent crude oil per barrel, the type that is most used

in Europe. These price decreases have come just a few weeks after a new law was passed in Spain regulating competition in the fuel industry, and preventing service stations with a market share greater than 40 per cent from expanding further. This means REPSOL, which currently operates in 35 provinces in Spain, is unable to open any more petrol stations. Petrol and diesel in Spain continue to cost less than the European average of 1.525 euros a litre for the former and 1.42 euros per litre for the latter. It is also lower than the average cost per litre in the Eurozone – 1.558 euros for petrol and 1.403 litres for diesel. thinkSPAIN

Save fuel with an Autotune ReMap Having been successfully running my existing business Autofrio Vehicle Air Conditioning Services here in Spain for over 5 years now, and the ever increasing fuel costs. I discovered with Quantum Tuning software that there was a reliable and cost effective way for me and my customers to save a substantial amount of money on their fuel cost in running their vehicles. Having been involved in the technical side of the automotive industry for over 20 years. And previous experience in the tuning of high performance sports supercars, decided this would be an ideal opportunity to help people save money in a way I knew could be very cost effective. Mazda CX-5 2.2 175ps AWD Sport Nav Diesel & Safety Pack 2012 onwards New price range: £21,595 - £29,395 Economy: 51mpg 6 speed manual 2.2 litre diesel engine 0-60mph: 9.1 secs Top speed: 127mph Power: 172bhp Fuel capacity: 58 litres

Air conditioning is a standard luxury on most vehicles these days. But in my experience these systems can be a little slow in delivering a comfortable temperature. Not so in the Mazda CX-5. Winter is fast approaching and during these challenging cold spells we all demand vehicles that warm up immediately and even in this day and age it can take several minutes for many to do so. The Mazda CX-5 seems to almost have instant heat. Whack up the air conditioning dial to the hottest point and the interior warms up incredibly quickly. The same is true in the summer when temperatures need to be swiftly brought down. It’s impressive. This was just one of the features of this permanent four wheel drive crossover (sport utility vehicle built on a car platform), which is Mazda’s answer to the Nissan Qashqai. I have driven the Qashqai and clearly Mazda has scrutinized it. They’ve done a good job, helped by the striking Stormy Blue Mica finish of the test model. I actually prefer the CX5’s nose, which is more purposeful and sporty and overall it seems a more appealing package. The one thing it lacks though and I think would be a very welcome addition would be the front to back panoramic glass roof that ensures a high amount of light makes its way into the Qashqai. In contrast, as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz the interior of the Mazda is comparatively dark, even on a sunny day.

engine button. This is a bit of a clumsy position. Once discovered though, it’s not forgotten.

pulling a lever on either side of the inside of the boot for the seats to quickly drop.

It’s a 2.2-litre diesel and as is often the case there’s a slight delay when kicking the accelerator, especially when in second gear but it’s gutsy and the six speed manual gearbox is a little notchy but decisive. It drives like a smaller car and is certainly engaging.

The CX-5 is the first vehicle to be produced by Mazda with no input from Ford. A frightening prospect when you think that Ford and Mazda worked together between 1979 and 2010 and that between them they designed some fabulous vehicles.

Drivers and their passengers in vehicles of this type enjoy the raised driving position, which creates a more secure and safe environment. This is partly because the driver can see further ahead and can perform overtaking manoeuvres that would be impossible in smaller vehicles. The ride height of the vehicle gives the driver a greater view of the road and while I’ve been driving it have safely overtaken a parked bus on a narrow country lane because I could see round the bend. Later on I was able to safely overtake a line of traffic, again because I could see a clear road ahead, when the motorcyclist behind was uncertain.

As a former Xedos 6 owner, I understandably have high expectations of Mazdas and for me the Mazda has been pretty successful. My old Xedos loved its juice and I have been surprised at how far it is possible to drive the CX-5 on so little fuel, helped in part by i-stop, which intelligently cuts the engine when it has been idling too long for its liking. The CX-5 uses a clever Skyactiv lightweight platform, which promotes low emissions and greater efficiency, Mazda claims this puts it on a par with small vehicles.

Inside the CX-5 has all the refinements motorists expect including built-in TomTom and reversing camera, easy-to-use cruise control, all round electric windows, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, power folding wing mirrors, black leather interior and heated front seats. The security cover in the boot attaches to the inside of the boot lid so that you don’t need to constantly pull it back and forth. These vehicles always come into their own when nappy changes are required. Not only is the cavernous boot ideal for a little one to lie down in but the raised height means that there’s no awkward bending.

I scratched my head when I first sat in the driver’s seat because I couldn’t see how to start this vehicle. There’s no key for the ignition but after a while I saw behind the indicator stalk the start/stop

What sets the CX-5 apart from the competition is the fact that the rear seats can be so easily dropped for large loads. As you can see in the video at testdrives.biz it is simply a matter of

Boat Fishing ‘Pugwash Pete’ went out with ‘Steady Eddie’ and the pair had a great day’s fishing. Loads of small snappers and pandoras and Ed landed three European eels. They had loads of snags then all of a sudden Pete had a sizable fish, at first he thought it was a conger by the way it was fighting but when he eventually got it to the surface he was faced with the longest fish he ever caught. About 7.1/2 feet long and it looked like a conger but with an uncharacteristic long snout. Also a conger of that length would have been a lot fatter. Pete thinks it’s a sea snake but it looks like an eel to me but for now the ID remains unknown. (Watch this space) See photo of Pete and his sea monster. ‘Hissing Sid’ went out with ‘Angel Properties Steve and Fran’ and Sid’s mate ‘Mick the cabin boy’. They started off at the riverbed by the football stadium and the sea was fairly flat but with a biting cold wind coming of the land and the sun was struggling to break through the hazy cloud. With just a few small fish caught they headed for the harbour wall for some shelter. This was a different world and they soon warmed up. Fran was soon into a good fish and brought up toadfish, they look like a monkfish with a massive head and mouthful of very sharp teeth. Shore Fishing Nine members of Albox Fishing Club fished off the rocks opposite the Repsol garage on the Garrucha to Mojacar road 11am to 4pm. 177 fish caught and 175 returned to the sea. The

wind was N Westerly so the sea was good and flat. Light weights were used and cast a good distance out. Again plenty of bait pinchers, fish caught were wrasse, weavers, palometes, wide eyed flounders, saddled bream, rockfish and plenty of Bogues. The competition is hotting up! Well done boys. ‘Dennis the Menace’ 4 x fish, Mad Martin 6 x Fish, ‘Lady Sarah’ 11 x Fish, ‘Squiddly Sid’ 2 x Fish, ‘Flash Gordon’ 4 x Fish, ‘Tom Tom’ 7 x Fish - First time Out! ‘Jaguar Jack’ 93 x Fish, Sid said “Good spot or What?” Maybe just a good fisherman Sid! ‘Tony Always laughing’ 24 x Fish, ‘Dizzy John’ 26 x Fish. ‘London Bill’ caught mackerel and one small bonito, all by spinning a silver mepp. Coarse Fishing ‘Baza Barry’ fished Argos and caught plenty of barbel and carp, a fish a cast he said. Two Murcia matches were won with top weights of 52lbs and 25lbs. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. For up to date information on fishing licenses or any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (Probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. You can also contact me on Facebook @ ‘John Beachcomber Mojacar’. Tight lines, Beachcomber John.

Huercal-Overa CF 3 Mar Menor 1 With Mar Menor having a strong start to the campaign Huercal-Overa Fans hoped for some old fashioned hard work from Los Rojos. They weren’t to be disappointed. From the first whistle the home side were first to the ball, snapping at the heels of the visiting players so not to let them settle. Which was proving positive as in the 7th minute the home side went ahead through a fantastic strike courtesy of the left boot of Carmona. Struck from 25 yards out the ball nestled

in the back of the net with the keeper looking on stranded… The sides went in at the break with Huercal-Overa leading and looking good for it aswell. The second half started with a red card for a Mar Menor side who must have had the hair dryer treatment at half time when Santi Silva was shown a second yellow card for a rash challenge. The home fans wanted the team to push on and go on to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Paco was having another solid

game between the sticks for the reds pulling out some top drawer saves and commanding his area well. But it was Carmona who would grab the headlines in the 62nd with a second strike from 30 yards out that sailed into the top left corner of the net and left Marme 2-0 down. The game was coming to an end with 3 minutes to go when substitute Gomez got a 3rd for HuercalOvera from a knock down by Mansour to make the game dead and buried.

The home side couldn’t hold onto a clean sheet when in the final minute of injury time a corner from the left found its way past 6 Red shirts and swept past Paco to make it 31. The first home victory of the season for Huercal-Overa who now have a trip to Bullense which could turn out to be a 6 pointer… VAMOS ROJOS For more info on Huercal-Overa CF goto https://hocfexpats. wordpress.com/

Thursday November 5th, Guy Fawkes Night, we were expectant of a lively competition at the beautifully prepared Alboran Course, with perfect weather this had to be the chance for the players to go like Rockets playing in this Pairs Texas Scramble. The pairing of Mark Danson and Christine Dow worked brilliantly, they lit up the course like a pair of Roman Candles scoring a net 64 to take 1st place from Ian Postle and Terry Caddick who played like a couple of Sparklers to score a nett par 72 with Terry also taking Nearest the Pin on the 17th and sharing Nearest the Pin with the second shot with his partner Ian. Nigel Greenwood and Geoff Smith managed a 73 to take 3rd place on count back from Ron Curtis and Nick Pogson.
