Rescuers try to reach a two week old baby Taxi gets stuck in flood trapped in a house in Berkshire water after ignoring

The youngster is among the residents of Wraysbury, on the banks of the River Thames, who are being evacuated from their homes by a team of volunteer flood wardens.

Around 400 flood warnings and alerts have been issued by the Environment Agency, including 16 severe warnings, meaning there is a danger to life.

Further upstream in Datchet, the military was drafted in to build emergency barriers from sandbags in a desperate attempt to hold back the water.

The Thames Valley is now among the areas most at risk, with the river at record levels in places including Marlow Lock, Romney Lock, Walton and Ditton Island. A number of rail lines have been flooded, with major disruption on some First Great Western, CrossCountry, Southeastern and South West Trains routes. Further east, the swollen River Thames is predicted to burst its banks in several places between Datchet and Shepperton Green, including Hamm Court and Chertsey in Surrey. Around 2,500 homes are at risk, according to the Environment Agency, which said river levels in the area “are extremely high and are forecast to continue to rise.” Forecasters have warned there will be little respite from the hurricane-force winds and lashing rain, with further storms expected to cross the country during the week. The Met Office said river levels are expected to continue rising along the Thames, Severn and the Stour in Dorset in the coming days. Two other severe flood warnings remain in the South West, which has seen significant flooding especially on the Somerset Levels. The Ministry of Defence has put 1,600 personnel on six hours’ notice to help in the south of England, and another 20,000 sandbags are ready to be deployed to communities in the area. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: “Military personnel, currently mostly Royal Marines, continue to provide support in Somerset in areas affected by floods as part of crossGovernment and multi-agency relief efforts

road closed sign

A Taxi driver got his vehicle stuck in flood water after ignoring a road closed sign in Eton in the early hours of the morning. The car got stuck in Pococks Lane, Eton, at around 1am. The fire services from Slough were called to the scene, but by the time they had arrived, the driver and his passenger had managed to free themselves and wade out of the water. The driver then had the cheek to ask the firefighters to tow his car free; they told him that rather than tying up fire service resources, he should call a breakdown recovery service.

The Environment Agency claims that its handling of flood defences is a ‘success.’

David Jordan, director of operations for the Environment Agency, said that the protection of over a million homes by flood defences contrasts with 5,000 flooded homes, which he called “individual tragedies”. “We need to recognise that 1.3 million other properties would have flooded if these flood defences had not been built,” Mr Jordan said. “That is the success story, if you like, that we are talking about.” But Tory MP Ian Liddell-Grainger, whose Bridgwater and West Somerset constituency has been among the worst hit areas, called the flooding “a tragedy and a disaster”. “What a stupid bloody man,” he added. “This is an out of touch, out of control quango which is stuck in a time warp of arrogance and stupidity.”

NekNominate – the latest online craze

A woman stripped down to her underwear in a supermarket before downing a can of beer for a NekNominate challenge.

Rebecca Dagley, 19, walked into an Asda supermarket in Fosse Park, Leicester, in a beige trench coat. She walked around the store before coming to a stop in the fruit and vegetable aisle, taking a can of Stella Artois from her pocket, removing her coat, stripping down to just her bra, knickers and suspenders, and then downing the can of beer in front of shocked shoppers. The act was captured on film by a giggling friend - who at the end of the footage nominates three more friends to take part. This is NekNominate, an online craze where youngsters are chosen by their peers to down - or ‘neck’ – strong drinks before challenging others to film a more shocking video within the next 24 hours. The craze started in Australia last month and has now swept the globe with thousands of British youngsters taking part.

The act is often done in bizarre and dangerous circumstances - Sean Bisset, 18, downed a mixture of wine and gin before plunging in to a freezing harbour.

Last weekend two young men died in Ireland as a result of taking part. Ross Cummins, 22, was found unconscious in a house in Dublin in the early hours of Saturday morning and died later in hospital amid reports he was drinking spirits at the time of his death. Hours later, the body of Jonny Byrne, 19, was discovered floating in the river at Milford Bridge in County Carlow after apparently jumping in as part of a nomination.

Participants often upload the footage onto the internet. Last week, footage was posted of one young man from Derby drinking a live goldfish as part of the craze.

The game has been condemned by experts. Dr Sarah Jarvis, medical adviser to alcohol education charity Drinkaware, said: ‘Young people often say they feel peer pressure to drink to fit in, but competitions to drink excessively in a short space of time can be dangerous and this should not come as a surprise. Quite apart from the risk of accident or injury as a result of drinking to excess, there is another aspect to these online drinking games which is the ‘cyber shame’ some young people may experience.’

In some instances, teens can be seen downing ‘dirty pints’ - or concoctions of alcohol and other substances - or large amounts of strong spirits as part of the dare.

‘Drinkaware’ research shows nearly half of 18 to 24-year-olds admitted ‘untagging’ drunk photos of themselves on Facebook that they didn’t want others to see.’

It’s like a war zone, there’s just things floating around in the water,” added Mr Sadler. “We’ve lost everything. Our homes are worthless, our farms are worthless. People have lost farms which they’ve taken years and years to build up. It’s all gone.” Mr Sadler and his family have been evacuated from their home in Moorland and have taken shelter in another farm’s holiday cottage.

Desperate farmers are working day and night to move livestock and feed from the flooded Somerset Levels, in scenes described as reminiscent of a war zone. Dozens of farmers have joined forces to evacuate their animals as floodwater continues to rise. Levels farmers Gavin Sadler and James Winslade have moved 550 cattle to another farm along with as much bedding and feed as they could manage, and returned to move a further 120 cows from two more farms as well as a horse which has already been moved from one flooded farm, only to be stranded again. Mr Sadler said: “Our farms have gone, our villages have gone, the church has gone. “And why? Last year Lord Chris Smith came here and said something would be done within six months, but nothing has happened. This is what happens when you take no action. “We have been banging on about dredging the rivers and no, it might not have stopped this from happening, but the water would have been able to get away a lot quicker. “Everyone is suffering from the neglect of the Environment Agency but sadly they are only doing what Government policy has stipulated. “They need to get a grip and sort this out.” Mr Sadler was speaking to Farmers Guardian while he was driving to rescue more cattle, said rain was

local sherry and watch Morocco twinkling away in the distance. In August, the two-week festival is wonderfully colourful, with music on every street corner. There’s minimal tourism, the climate is cool and the townspeople are very friendly.

Alhama de Granada

La Taha de Pitres, Alpujarras

These small, pretty villages high in the Sierra Nevada national park are a few hours’ drive from Málaga, but offer a window on to a different Andalucía. The villages are connected by ancient paths, known as caminos, which, along with the long-distance footpath GR-7, make this an excellent base for stunning scenic walks. Visit in late September or early November to forage the glut of wild almonds, walnuts, chestnuts and figs, and if you’re there in early November, don’t miss the Fiesta de las Castañas (feast of chestnuts) in Mecina Bombarón.

Vejer de la Frontera

This is a stunning hilltop Moorish town 9km from the empty golden beaches of the Costa de la Luz. Wander round the ancient cobbled streets, eat delicious tapas in one of the many street cafes. Sit on the terrace of the hippy chic Hotel la Casa del Califa with a glass of chilled

This is one of the most beautiful places in Spain, in the fertile Poniente Granadino in southern Andalucía – incredible light, authentic fabulous food, great people. It isn’t far from the airport at Málaga, but it is a million miles from the pubs and full English breakfasts on the coast. There are churches, lovely squares, a spectacular gorge, a red Moorish fort, an Arabic quarter, fresh food shops and dozens of cafe-bars and restaurants all in easy walking distance. The town is famous throughout Spain for its thermal baths – hot therapeutic water bubbles up into four thermal pools next to the river.

Calle Granada, Málaga

People pass through Málaga, but they perhaps don’t know that it has two fabulous museums, an impressive cathedral, an Arab fortress and palace as good as any outside Granada, clear blue seas and miles of sandy beaches lined with chiringuito bars serving fresh sardines. The top street is Calle

Granada, where the Malagueños go to visit favourite tapas bars. There are many, but chief among them are: La Campana – tiny, crowded and noisy – which serves superb fresh fish at knock-down prices; El Piyayo, across the road, more upmarket, with seats outside; and the renowned El Pimpi, a vast, rambling place full of Spanish character. Try them all.

Etnosur at Alcalá la Real

For three days every July (15-17 July in 2011), the town of Alcalá la Real is home to a vibrant multicultural festival of music, theatre, circus, cinema, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, crafts, food, and much more! The town is only 60km from Jaén and 55km from Granada – a good bus service runs from both these cities – there’s a good selection of hotels and restaurants, as well as a reasonably priced camping area. The festival attracts a host of performers from across the globe every year, and all of the events are absolutely free.

Escaleras San Cristóbal, Granada

You arrive at the top entrance to the stairway, with an epic view over the south of the city. Descending the first flight of steps you spot a chameleon clinging to the wall in black paint. Wandering around the corner, you see colours erupt, an octopus woman lazes down a full flight while a Ghibliesque character skirts across a draughts board. Whales spurt, monkeys play and a pregnant Africa embraces the world. Cunningham-inspired vistas are played off against the smiles and eyes of the Cheshire cat. You realise that standing here, at the bottom of a staircase in southern Spain, you are witness to something very special.

Cortes de Baza

This is a great village – we stayed in a cave house, of which there are several around. The best bit was arriving (unplanned) on the penultimate weekend of August when the festival in honour of the patron saints – San Cosme and San Damián – was in full swing with a small funfair, outdoor dancing to live bands, religious and other parades and processions, massive communal meals. The final “event” seems to be little old ladies throwing buckets of water over young men! Brilliant – oh, and there’s free tapas in all the bars.

Costa de la Luz

From Cádiz to Tarifa you will find miles of white sandy beaches with turquoise ocean backed by pine forests and dotted with laid-back fishing villages where find bars serve the freshest seafood accompanied by chilled sherry from Jerez de la Frontera. Places to check out are Tarifa, the windsurfing capital and gateway to Africa; Bolonia, which is a well-preserved Roman city; Caños de Meca, a hippy hangout since the 1960s where little has changed; and Conil, a tuna fishing village. Finally you should see the provincial capital Cádiz, with its Spanish colonial vibes. You could be in Havana! Source: http://www.theguardian.com/

almeria angels February is Raynauds Awareness Month. Raynaud’s disease is a common condition that affects the blood supply to certain parts of the body, usually the fingers and toes. You may have heard of it referred to as Raynaud’s syndrome, Raynaud’s phenomenon or just Raynaud’s. The condition occurs because your blood vessels go into a temporary spasm which blocks the flow of blood. This causes the affected area to change colour to white, then blue and then finally red as the blood flow returns. You may also experience pain, numbness and pins and needles in the affected body parts. Symptoms can last from a few minutes to several hours. You may not have heard of Raynaud’s, but it’s thought that 10% of women in the UK suffer from the disorders which occur when blood vessels, mostly in the hands, become over-sensitive to changes in temperature. Raynaud’s is usually triggered by cold temperatures or by anxiety or stress. It is not a serious threat to your health but it can be annoying to live with. People with Raynaud’s often go for long periods without any symptoms and sometimes the condition goes away altogether. Treatment In many cases it may be possible to control the symptoms of Raynaud’s using self-care techniques such as avoiding the cold, wearing gloves and using relaxation techniques when feeling stressed. Quitting smoking can also help improve symptoms, as smoking can affect your circulation. Organised by the Raynaud’s and Scleroderma Association, the month aims are to give awareness of this disorder and offer help and advice not only to sufferers, but to their friends and families too. If you suffer from Raynauds or would like to find out more information on this subject, their website is www.raynauds.org.uk On 4 February 2013 it was World Cancer Day. The day was first organised by the International Union Against Cancer in 2005. If you, like me, know someone who has either survived or died from this terrible disease, then this is the perfect chance to raise awareness of the ways we can prevent cancer through the choices we make. Each year over 12.7 million people receive a cancer diagnosis and 7.6 million people die from the disease. Did you know that 3040% of cancers can be cured through early diagnosis and treatment? This is the reason why it is so important that we do what we can to prevent cancer and ensure that we all live a healthier life. I think

by now most of us are aware of the risks of tobacco and excessive alcohol use. And we are all aware of the importance of a healthy diet and maintainance of a healthy weight! Obesity has its own health consequences, for example, diabetes, heart disease and musculoskeletal disorders. However, some studies have reported a link between obesity and cancers of the gallbladder, ovaries and pancreas. So get more active and help reduce your risk of cancer. From 4-10 February 2013 it’s Tinnitus Awareness Week. The week was created by the British Tinnitus Association to raise awareness of this problem which affects so many people. Tinnitus is the medical name for the perception of noise in one ear, both ears or the head. The noise comes from inside the body rather than an outside source. People with tinnitus can experience different types of sound. Most people describe it as a ringing sound but other sounds may include: •buzzing •humming •whistling •music Sometimes, the noise associated with tinnitus beats in time with a person’s pulse. This is known as pulsatile tinnitus. Tinnitus is often worse at quiet times, such as when you are trying to get to sleep. This is because there is less background noise to distract you from the sounds of tinnitus. The sound may also be more noticeable when you are tired. The sounds of tinnitus are usually only heard by the person who has tinnitus, although in a few rare cases, they can also be heard by other people. Temporary tinnitus can be caused by a cold, a blow to the head, or prolonged exposure to a loud noise, such as a music concert. The treatment for tinnitus will depend on the underlying cause. For example, for tinnitus that is caused by a build-up of earwax, eardrops or ear irrigation may be recommended. Irrigation involves using a pressurised flow of water to remove the earwax. However, in many cases of tinnitus, there is no cure and treatment aims to manage the symptom on a daily basis. Most people learn to live with tinnitus but it can have a significant affect on daily life. For example, it can affect concentration and cause sleeping problems and depression. There is currently no cure for long-term tinnitus. Therefore, the aim of treatments, such as sound therapy, relaxation therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), is to help people manage their symptoms effectively.

SOLTIMES FEBRUARY 2014

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

Losing tv Channels 06 February saw us losing the BBC channels and 11 February we expect to lose the ITV channels. This is due to the launch of the satellite Astra 2E finally going live. BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 had decided that they would like to broadcast their channels “in the clear” in other words, with no Sky subscription needed. This caused a problem: having their signal easily available outside the UK for free conflicted with the sale of programme rights, which are sold on a country-by-country basis. The solution to this was to use a new satellite with its signal tightly focused on the UK, meaning that here in Spain we would not be able to watch those channels on the smaller dishes like the 1.2 metre dish that we already have installed. This could mean that you will need to upgrade to a bigger dish to carry on watching these free to air channels. We have installed several of these lager 1.8 Metre dishes and they are receiving all the BBC channels except HD. If these channels are not working for you then it needs to be investigated by a reputable Satellite Engineer at how useful it would be to have a bigger dish installed, or find out whether you can use a virtual private network (VPN), android box, to watch free-to-

air TV over the Internet. Using Sky channels like Sky One, Sky News and Sky Sports are easily receivable across Europe. New satellites planned for the future will have an even stronger European signal, so watching Sky without BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 remains an option. The best person to ask for free advice is your local Satellite Installer Mike Barnes of Mbit Almanzora; he has been here in this area for the last 7 years installing Satellite TV and Broadband and gained many happy and satisfied customers. So if you want to continue watching all your favourite TV programmes by upgrading to a 1.8 metre dish, which in most cases will be what is required, please contact Mike. His prices for this upgrade start at €750.00 depending on where you are and how the larger dish needs to be installed. It may be that in some places a 2.4 metre dish is required, price of that on application. Mike can also offer free advice on alternative ways of watching the free to air channels like an Android box and whether it is suitable for you and the costs involved etc

A courtyard is the garden living area that comes closest to being a true outdoor room. These elegant spaces temporary roof that covers the courtyard provide the ultimate in privacy Acompletely in winter also extends the time you can

use the area and protects the plants within. Styles: The style and look of the courtyard is to some extent predetermined by the walls that define it. However, these walls can be altered to create the setting you want. Scale: An aspect of design you do have control over is scale. The absence of a roof makes the space feel bigger than it is. A grouping of tables and chairs that feels comfortable on an open patio may look cramped in a walled courtyard. Scale also comes into play when selecting plants. In terms of both design and horticulture, it works better to have fewer, larger pots than many little pots that dry out quickly and blow over. Views: The main concern for a courtyard is usually the view into it rather than out of it. As you design, examine views from any windows (including those overhead) and doors that enter the courtyard. Also, if you have an attractive view from the courtyard, consider cutting a window in a wall of the courtyard to frame it.

HIP, THIGH, AND KNEE PAIN? WHY SUFFER WHEN HELP IS AT HAND …..

Pain in the hips and knees is a major source of disability, contributing to a diminished quality of life for a great number of people. When your knees and hips hurt, you quit participation in sports, you stop exercising, and you begin hiring others to get the yard work done. You stop going for walks on pleasant evenings. You foresee ending up in a wheelchair or having to use a walker or a cane because of your knees or had hip, for many, this is a very real but utterly needless outcome that most people would dread. Arthritis, ligament injury, and deterioration of joint cartilage are the most usual medical explanations for hip and knee pain. X-rays and other tests often seem to substantiate such diagnoses. But even in the absence of objective evidence, joint pain itself is assumed to

In reality, pain in hip and knee joints so often nothing more than referred pain from trigger points in the muscles of the thighs; such pain can be every bit as intense and debilitating as pain from a damaged joint. Even when a hip or knee joint has suffered a genuine injury, trigger points in associated muscles nearly always contribute a major part of the pain. Treatment of joint trauma should always include treatment of trigger points in all nearby muscles. Always ask a Qualified Therapist to look for trigger points first when you have pain in a hip or knee. Surgery is always the last option you look towards when all the other options have been exhausted.

SOLTIMES FEBRUARY 2014

braben’s blog... I was watching a video of how the internet and the “Free Software Foundation” started and the presenter said that “Passwords didn’t exist (within the computer world) because they weren’t wanted or needed until the bosses forced them upon us to protect their secrets”. This got me wondering what passwords really are and, more importantly, are they absolutely necessary. Presented today are my rambling thoughts on the subject. The use of, and need for, passwords goes back before the birth of Christ and can be found in the Egyptian “book of the dead” as they were used to navigate the afterlife to allow passage away from the malevolent Egyptian gods. From here passwords were designed and used within the military! History records the ancient Roman armies having used passwords as have the ancient Greek armies and just about every army from then on. A password is a single word consisting of a number of characters. These can be CAPITALS and lower case), numbers and certain printable characters. Beyond the password is something called a “passphrase”. This is simply either, a string of passwords, a favourite passage from a book, a line from a movie or an inspired piece of non-sense. How good (Strong) is your password? Allow me to offer a silly example that will help understanding the mind of the Cracker who is intent on getting onto your machine. “Hello, My name is Fred Flintstone. I have a wife Wilma and daughter Pebbles who has a dog D’Fer.“(Yes I know it was Dino but why not D,Fer Dog!). Most people will use a familiar word or name as their password. Knowing this simple error of judgement gives my attacker 5 chances to get into my computer (Fred, Flintstone, Wilma, Pebble,

D,Fer)! This will not take very long. The worst and most used password is “password” followed by “123456” Now they only need 7 attempts to access my system. What are the fatal flaws with passwords? 1. Too Short; 2. Too Personal – family names, pets names, etc. 3. Single case and 4. Easily Remembered – this one is a 2 edged sword! As you may have already guessed there are “Trev’s Rules” on how do we get around these problems? 1. Use a password with a minimum of 8 characters these should include - UPPER CASE, lower case and numbers. Remember that the longer the password, the greater the combination and the more time it will take to crack! 2. Don’t use personal identifying information – the address that you lived 36 years ago can still be found out and tried! 3. Have some way of keeping the password available in a not-obvious place “just in case” BUT don’t write on it “PASSWORD”. 4. There are many websites that off to test your password and as the web is not totally secure yet, Maybe you might use one of the many wonderful, free password generator and checkers that are out there. Try “password_ generator_checker_2.exe” in google – it is small but gives a good indication as to the quality of your password. Blame NCIS character “Gibbs” for this predilection towards rules! One last trick that is recommended at the ACC (Albox Computer Club). Go to “http://www. passwordcard.org/en” where you will find a “credit card” that you should print out with it you get simple instructions on how this card works. Then as the page says “Enjoy your new feeling of safety and peace of mind... :-)

TV Dinners

We’ve got a problem with our television. We keep getting programmes that I’m sure weren’t meant for release, but have somehow slithered under the door and made it to the screens, well at least our screen. There are about 768 channels that we have access to and usually we end up watching a DVD because the programmes are, well, just awful Do you remember Eldorado, the soap opera about expats in Spain that was a bit of a disaster at the time? Critics, viewers and several distant alien races never had a kind word to say about it. Well I think that if it was shown now it may be in line for BAFTA-does that stand for Brings Awfully Feeble Television Again! Right now you can’t switch your television on without seeing a chef in action cooking some exotic dish or other. I don’t mind TV chefs, in fact I grew up with Fanny Craddock. Not in the same house, but watching her on TV with her husband Johnny. Nobody ever seemed sure what Johnny contributed to the programme, a little like the guy in Wham who wasn’t George Michael. My dad often tried cooking her recipes at home but regularly seemed disappointed that they turned out looking like Fanny’s. I didn’t know why he would be so disappointed at the time, thinking, in my innocence, they were supposed to look like hers! But there’s a guy on TV now who just confirms what I said about awful programmes. His idea of a top recipe tip is for us to cook cow’s udders, or maybe a little pig’s brain. Now just who he expects to go leaping along the aisles of the Mercadona, hunting down the last remaining pack of udders so they can race home to perfect the dish, before having friends to dinner, is quite beyond any sort of understanding.

Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo. co.uk

Or maybe not. Who would volunteer to appear on a TV game show completely naked? No not me either, but some people did on a show called Naked Jungle-which has been regularly voted as the worst ever UK programme. I have to admit I didn’t see it-and count myself very fortunate indeed-but it strikes me that if you’re batty enough to go in front of cameras and an audience of millions naked, then you may well be tempted to dig into udders. Ugh! I’m off to the chippy!

Bigger Bullfighting Museum Plan Gets A Goring From Opposition Parties

The mayor is on record as saying he will continue to give his personal support, as well as that of his party, to what he considers to be an integral part of the social and historical culture of Roquetas and Andalucia. He made the statement at the launch of last year’s line-up of matadors for the annual corrida during the fiesta in July. Interestingly, this years bullfighting event may well not go ahead, although the mayors office is tight lipped as to whether this is the case. As with so many contentious issues in the

municipality, the disagreement comes down to what each party considers to be the best way of spending the annual budget. The proposed extension plans to the museum will cost in excess of half as million euros; money which the opposition coalition says should be spent on more useful projects. They point out that many local people are opposed to bullfighting and that the same people are not opposed to road improvement, education and learning development and employment schemes. Many critics of the Popular Party (the ruling local government party), say that after almost twenty years in power, they are losing touch with the needs of the community and spending too much time - and ultimately too much money – on schemes which don’t reflect the views of the majority of taxpayers. Ricardo Fernandez, spokesman for the opposition coalition, said that, “For too long the Popular

New plans to extend the Bullfighting Museum in Roquetas have come under fire from members of the United Left opposition party. The proposed extension would almost double the existing space. The museum at the Plaza de Toros in the centre of town was opened five years ago and was heavily criticised at the time. The local government, led by Mayor Gabriel Amat, was accused of spending tax payers’ money on the highly controversial issue of bullfighting, which is thought by many to be an outdated and cruel ‘sport’. It has been banned in many areas of Spain.

Party have pursued the private hobbies of party leader Mayor Amat and his deputy, Eloisa Cabrera; bullfighting being just one of them” He called for more accountability from the council and a more considered understanding of the needs of the people in the municipality. By Martin Shortland

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please

e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com

Q. A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about? A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words if you are resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full

inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation. Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will. 2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: The new regulation has given much more strength to the testators /testatrix, letting them choose between English or Spanish Law, which is good, but precaution is a must because under the new regulation if nothing is said and you are a resident in Spain automatically the law applicable will be Spanish law which does not permit that spouses leave everything to each other if there are children. To avoid nasty surprises visit your solicitor and ask if you need to change the wording of your will due to the new Regulation of the EU. 650/2012. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Andalucia since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of AlmerĂa and Madrid. For a short period of time leading up to 2007 he was also Honorary British Consul

Help for Expats in Spain

YOU HAVE BOUGHT A PROPERTY AND IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN…

As a good citizen, you paid your purchase taxes (8% of the price of the property) but now you have received a letter from the tax office telling you that you need to pay more taxes since their valuation of the property is higher than the price you paid. Why is that?

LEGALLY ACCEPTABLE MINIMUM VALUE FOR TAX PURPOSES If you and the seller declare an amount considered too little, then the Spanish Tax Agency can bill you, as buyer of the property, for the amount they deem underpaid. This problem is now occurring on normal legal transactions when you are lucky to get an absolute bargain. This is because a property is given a cadastral value for property tax purposes. During any given period, the tax office, rather than revalue all the properties, just declare a multiplier to this value to give the legally Multipliers acceptable minimum value for a property or piece of Albox 2,55 land. If you pay less than this total assumed value (after Antas 1,07 the multiplier is applied) you will get an invoice for the Arboleas 3,00 tax due on the amount between the price on the deeds and their figure. Yes, it can. You can submit a complaint to the Spanish Tax Agency and request a valuation of the property by an independent valuer in view of the special characteristics of the property.

SOLTIMES FEBRUARY 2014

YOUR HOME IS ILLEGAL FROM HERE TO ETERNITY IF YOU ARE ON THE WRONG TYPE OF PLOT ACCORDING TO THE JUNTA

AUAN, 3rd February 2014 In the latest twist to the illegal homes saga, the homeowners association, AUAN, reveals that some of its members in El Fas, Cantoria are facing allegations from the regional government that their homes are still illegal because they were constructed on the wrong type of plot. Even though the homeowners, British pensioners, have been living in their homes for nearly 10 years they have had their services disconnected whilst the proceedings rumble on. An irregular plot, known as a parcelacion urbanistica is alleged to occur when a piece of rustic land is divided in order to construct houses. According to AUAN such land divisions are commonplace in the Valley of Almanzora, with around 30 similar examples of these land divisions in Albox alone affecting some 278 properties. The AUAN members, with the help of the association and its lawyer Gerardo Vazquez, have presented legal objections to the town hall of Cantoria arguing that the proceedings should be archived and that basic services such as

electricity and water, disconnected via an injunction as a result of this case, should be restored to these properties. As Maura Hillen, president of the association explains ‘The Junta alleges that this type of land division is never proscribed from prosecution. But, if murder can be proscribed after a period of time, why not illegal land divisions for goodness sake? Anyway what exactly is the point of pursuing this case? Does this mean that the government is going to enforce this legislation whenever they feel like it from here to eternity against thousands if not hundreds of thousands of plots where there is an irregular land division? Are they going to challenge everyone or are they just going to challenge a few? If so, why just a few?” Mrs Hillen concluded ‘Homeowners cannot afford to less this pass unchallenged. We do not agree with the regional government’s legal position on irregular land divisions and we believe that we have clear legal arguments to support our view. Our association is supporting this particular case because the outcome affects so many others in similar circumstances.’

A total of 21,109 licences were issued for the reform or restoration of homes in Spain between January and November 2013, which represents a decrease of 2.2% compared to the same period in 2012 (21,593 permits), according to the latest Ministry of Development data. Thus, building permits for home renovations in 2013 maintained the negative trend of the previous year, when they fell by 19.6%, to a total of 23,007. After registering increases in 2009 and 2010, permits for home reforms fell again in 2011 returning to levels similar to those registered in 2008, and in 2012 recorded the lowest level in the Ministry of Development’s comparable time series, which began in the year 2000. Meanwhile, El Mundo reported that the number of permits issued for home extensions fell by 25.8% between January and November 2013, to a total of 1,730. Last year, in a strategy designed to encourage housing rehabilitation, Mariano Rajoy’s Government approved the Law on Rehabilitation, Urban Regeneration and Renewal, and the State Plan of Home Rentals and Rehabilitation 2013-2016, in order to make available economic support for these activities. book review

The ship, bow first, was slowly sinking into the water. People began tumbling like broken dolls from the decks, flopping, flailing into the sea. There was a huge cracking sound-and then the Titanic disappeared. Kate Alcott, a pseudonym for Patricia O’Brien, used transcripts of the US Senate hearings over the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. Some of the characters are based on real characters who either survived the sinking such as the Duff Gordons and Margaret Brown as well as Senate William Alden Smith who presided over the hearings, otherwise Alcott admits to this being a work of fiction with the inclusion of factual evidence. I would highly recommend this book. Gripping from start to finish and I mean that! Tess Collins is the kind of heroine I admire and strongly approve of. She comes from modest roots, a large family struggling to make ends meet. Her father is critical and a man of the time, denying equal rights to women. Tess is constantly haunted by his oppressive and deprecating tones: You’re a farm girl, do your job, keep your head down and don’t put on airs. He was under the impression that she would ruin her life through defiance. Thankfully, Tess is a stubborn lady and is determined to make her life better not wreck it. She proves to be a good role model just like her mother: look for opportunity. Keep your head up, not down. Don’t settle for safety. Push forward-you are not foolish to try. What a far cry from her father’s damning thoughts: Watch out, foolish

The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott. girl. Tess feels ashamed of working as a servant, an image of servitude when she is duped into accepting work in Cherbourg. She was a good seamstress and we see evidence of this when she starts working for the indomitable Lady Gordon Duff, a famous dress designer, the person she most admired in the world. Like many others, Tess is on the cusp of a new life filled with immense possibilities, a dream come true, a wonderful fantasy. Sailing on the Titanic with the famous and wealthy. Two infatuated men, one a rich American businessman, Jack Bremerton, the other a talented member of the crew, Jim Bonney who sweep her off her feet. Wonderful and then…the jolt, the slight bump followed by a sudden silence and the sadly ironical remark: We bumped into an iceberg but all is well. Bumping, scrambling, shouting. Suddenly there was an acrid, sweaty smell of human fear in the salt air. Children wailing. Panic everywhere. Desperation. Followed by the horrors that have been well-documented over the years. That this ruined people’s lives is an understatement and I mean for those who were lucky enough to survive. We are told that 706 survived out of a passenger list of 2,223 and that out of these 60% of the first-class passengers survived, most of them women. In steerage, it was 25%. In reality, the Duff Gordons and their secretary escaped in a lifeboat that could have held 40-50 people instead of

pause for thought

During this period between Christmas and Lent, the Church spends time considering a number of incidents in the early ministry of Jesus; such as his Baptism and the selection of his disciples. One such incident that always fascinates me, possibly in part because of my enjoyment of this commodity, is that very well known story of Jesus turning water into wine; a story that I’d guess is known by everyone who has had any exposure at all to the Christian faith. But I wonder whether any of us actually realise just how amazing this miracle was. The wedding reception, which should have been the highlight of the greatest day of a young couple’s life, was about to become a disaster, bringing them shame and huge embarrassment as they’d grossly underestimated the amount of wine their guests would consume. The scene hardly bears thinking about. The shock, the anger and recriminations would inevitably put an immense strain on that young marriage. But the day was quite literally saved by the response of Jesus to his mother’s request that he come to the rescue. And it is the manner in which Jesus acted that really is so amazing. First, he acted discretely; in such a way that even the Master of Ceremonies was unaware of the problem, and embarrassment was kept to a minimum. Secondly, Jesus used equipment, resources and people that were readily available, telling the servants to fill some large jars that were present in the room with water and then serve that to the guests. Thirdly, he didn’t just provide a few bottles of wine, but was incredibly generous; seven hundred or so litres –

25

that’s around a thousand bottles! And fourthly, it wasn’t just an ordinary vino de casa, but a very good, high quality wine that evoked consternation from the M.C. So why would anyone suggest that Christians can’t have fun, or enjoy themselves? The couple in this story would certainly assert that Jesus gave a whole new dimension to the concept of ‘fun’ in their marriage, as he can in all our lives. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www. mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com PROFESSOR DAVID INGRAM, CBE 1927 - 2001 Research Fellow at Southampton University 1952-1959 Head of Department of Physics at Keele University 1959-1973 Principal of Chelsea College 1973-1980 Vice Chancellor of University of Kent 1980-1994 Chairman of the Universities Central Council on Admissions Treasurer of the Committee of ViceChancellors and Principals Trustee of Canterbury Cathedral Deputy Lieutenant of Kent

12. In The Dressmaker Alcott explores how the couple were vilified by the press and people in both the USA and the UK. Lady Duff Gordon is subpoenaed to give a statement of what happened in Lifeboat One, contradicting Jim Bonney’s statement. There were crimes against humanity, moral crimes, tales of bribery and refusals to fill the boat and look for survivors. Marrying into the titled class. Gave her licence to be cold about people’s lives. And this is when Tess has to grow up, think for herself and decide on what she really wants out of life. Should she stand up, challenge and do what she wants to do OR should she be careful, be loyal and challenge nothing? Can she remain with her ideal, continue to admire and respect her after learning how self-absorbed, selfish and a bit careless the woman is? People choose whatever they want to believe and declare it true. What is the truth? Will anyone accept any liability for so many loss of lives? Our poor heroine is filled with so much uncertainty. How could she be sure of anything anymore? She has crucial decisions to make over her future with Lady Duff Gordon and her love life. Interestingly, her mother’s advice and her own common sense are pivotal in her decision making. She certainly is true to herself and full of hope not despair. She would be strong and not always too careful, not settle for a smaller life,

a n d face what was true. As she walked through the streets of New York she felt strangely serene she was just a servant girl from Cherbourg without a job but she had a life and a future. That was important. Jack Bremerton called her extraordinary as a character and I would endorse this. She is the kind of person one would feel immense pride and joy to be with and I finalise by repeating what a role model she would make for women around the world today. I rest my case. Eggs Benedict

4 eggs 2 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 English muffins, halved a little butter, for spreading 8 slices smoked salmon chopped chives, to serve For the hollandaise sauce 2 tsp lemon juice 2 tsp white wine vinegar 3 egg yolks 125g unsalted butter, diced

with smoked salmon & chives Method 1.First make the Hollandaise sauce. Put the lemon juice and vinegar in a small bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk with a balloon whisk until light and frothy. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and whisk until mixture thickens. Gradually add the butter, whisking constantly until thick – if it looks like it might be splitting, then whisk off the heat for a few mins. Season and keep warm. 2.To poach the eggs, bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the vinegar. Lower the heat so that the water is simmering gently. Stir the water so you have a slight whirlpool, then slide in the eggs one by one. Cook each for about 4 mins, then remove with a slotted spoon. 3.Lightly toast and butter the muffins, then put a couple of slices of salmon on each half. Top each with an egg, spoon over some Hollandaise and garnish with chopped chives.

COMMUNITY NEWS On Saturday 22 February 2014 at 10.00am at the Delfin Dorado Restaurant, Mojacar Playa, Julie Hawkins is going to tell us of her very varied and interesting life, as she is the Speaker for the FGBMFI Ladies and Men´s Breakfast Meeting. Julie was the daughter of an RAF Medical Officer so she grew up in Pakistan, India and the Yemen, and at the age of 17 years of age she settled into England and became a Legal Secretary, but having a very talented singing voice, she won a Musical Competition Award for vocal lessons with the Chorus Master of the London Philharmonic Choir which resulted with her singing with them but also with two Operatic Companies for 8 years. Julie´s career as an Opera Singer came to an end due to a serious illness and so she trained as a Physiotechnologist and ran two Clinics, one for 11 years and another for 42 years. Three and a half years ago she came to live in Spain, with her husband Pastor Robin Hawkins, and they are using their talents in music and in Christian leadership, at the Huercal Overa New Life Church. Julie still has an amazing singing voice, as people who have heard her sing in the local group called Cantante can testify. She has seen God move in miraculous ways along her life, and she is one of life´s great encouragers. Come along and hear her wonderful testimony. A full English Breakfast is served, which includes Toast, Orange Juice and a cup of tea or coffee and the cost is 6 Euros. Booking is required, for catering purposes. Please contact David Templeman, 950 168349, mobile 661140481 or email: mojacar@fgbmfispain. org

The Illustrious Career of Anselmo Adamso

John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

After an easy walk west from Alqueria’s Castle square one arrives at the home of Anselmo Adamso in the Calle Mirador. A house in the old style with living quarters above and a stable below. The stable has long been converted into a photographic studio where Adamso practises his art and regales his clients with stories of his glory days as a photojournalist. Jostling for space on the studio walls is a collection of framed photographs. These depict explosions, burning military vehicles and men running, crouched as invisible projectiles fly menacingly overhead. By contrast a series of portraits showing young ladies with unlikely blemish free skin and even more unlikely hairdos stand on side tables. These serve to demonstrate his present area of photographic interest. A close study of Adamso’s career and his photographs of conflict show that the first is fake and the second plagiarised from more courageous individuals. He has lived the lie for so long that he is now unable to distinguish reality from the veil of fantasy he has wrapped around himself. He now sees himself as some latter day Robert Capa who risked life and limb in order to portray the truth in support of a noble cause. He did however visit a theatre of war, by accident. It was during a holiday to central Africa. Leaving the hotel to go on a day trip to the Uppyourz Game Park he got on the wrong bus. A bus full of mercenaries. He thought their Armalites and AK47s were protection from the

more vicious residents of the game reserves. When he realised his mistake he had a bowel movement and broke the four minute mile getting back to the hotel. His mind has become so befuddled he sometimes forgets just why his clients are there. Recently he greeted the Village matriarch who wanted a photograph to remember her eightieth birthday with the words “Just pop your clothes on the chair and lay on the rug”. The lady being equally befuddled obliged and Adamso got some rather disturbing shots, in fact he is still having nightmares. Last year he found himself in the middle of one of the many Alquerian riots. He thought his chance had come for a real action shot. Unfortunately the result was a blurred confusion of figures. Although his camera had been on F5.6 Adamso had been on Remitroot Whisky. Anselmo Adamso was never a great photojournalist he spent most of his time photographing lampposts. He however is humoured by the dysfunctional folk of Alqueria. Adamso is simply an untalented amiable buffoon and fits snugly into the Alquerian order of things.

viewpoint

YOU ARE THE GOOD GUYS BUT . . If ever a more obvious love hate relationship existed, then it is the one that you find between the Americans and the rest of the world. Where to start… Well, let’s take American movies, or at least the ones where bare chested, pumped up supermen with muscles in their spit, save the world with one arm tied behind their backs and both feet in concrete. Whether it’s WW2, Vietnam or Eye-raq – guess who saved us all from the Nazi beasts and the Eastern hordes? A favourite film of mine is Independence Day. Watching it again the other night, it was the bit where the President makes his stirring Independence Day speech that epitomised it all yet again. The audience whoop and holler, slap each other on the backs with blows that would bring down a moose, and snap off salutes that resemble kung fu chops. No quiet determination to defeat the alien invaders for them. Another movie that I can watch repeatedly is Saving Private Ryan, but of course it tells us yet again how the courageous American military defeated the hated Hun single-handed. Only once as I recall, are the other allies mentioned, and then only in passing. You could list movie after movie with the same testosterone fuelled triumphal message of: “We Americans are the good guys and no one

else matters”. I have many American friends, some of whom were members of the USAF stationed at Lakenheath in Suffolk near to our previous home. I have even more English pals who have made their homes in various parts of the States – and they all love their lives there. But there seems to be utter bewilderment that the populations of large chunks of planet Earth simply hate the Yanks. How could anybody fail to adore the generous benefactors of the most powerful nation in the world? And let’s be clear, they are indeed generous and big hearted people – no doubts there whatsoever. They are always on the spot to give aid and assistance to those who require it the most, wherever it might be in the world, but shouting it from the rooftops and this tiresome chest beating is what gets up everyone’s nose. I had a discussion on Facebook with an acquaintance after the Haiti earthquake disaster, and I just had to make a comment when all that I read seemed to be the same self congratulatory chatter about how the Americans – and only the Americans – were going to the aid of the unfortunate Haitians. I mentioned that in fact there was a large European and British force of volunteers and aid agencies present, not to mention those of other countries from around the world. Well you would have thought that I had peed on the American flag and called the Governor of California an Austrian, because what I got back was everything from pure vitriol to a mocking condescension in recognition of our own ‘tiny’ efforts. My contact

talked down to me as if I was some wayward child that needed an education, by starting with:“Yes we know you help but . . .” It’s hard to blame the American people actually, because all that the American media, particularly the TV news media, ever report on at length, are those items where the US is directly involved or where American interests are represented. Last year there was a massive earthquake in central Italy – a country that might as well be in the constellation Andromeda as far as most Americans are concerned - where over 300 people died. On the American news programme I was tuned into, it merited just 25 seconds of their time before moving on to the much more important issue of the US trade figures. I know, because I timed it. America would be the perfect country if it could find some sense of humility; stop believing it’s own publicity and begin to acquire an appreciation of other nations that hellooooooo - happen to co-exist with them on this small planet. A journalist once wrote, “Americans have no reason to hate or fear foreigners, but they have given the rest of us a million reasons to hate and fear them”. Strong words, but there is an element of truth in that. It’s hard to live with them sometimes, but it’s sure as hell impossible to live without them. Oh, and it might help if you they sent Arnold Schwarzenegger back to Austria.

animal corner Dog training: How to Be the Pack Leader

A dog’s mother begins training puppies from birth. She makes them wait for food; she controls when they play and how far they travel. Adult dogs need these same rules, boundaries, and limitations from you, their pack leader when dog training. A pack leader doesn’t project emotional or nervous energy, so neither should you. In the wild, the pack leader uses calm-assertive energy to influence how the dog interacts with his surroundings. She enforces these laws in a quiet way, as is the case when a mother picks up a puppy by the scruff of the neck if he strays outside the den. Ownership of territory is very important. Dogs in the wild claim space by first asserting themselves in a calm and confident way, and then communicating this ownership through clear body language signals and eye contact. A dog who understands that you, as the pack leader, own the space in which he lives will respect your asserted authority while dog training. Waiting is another way that pack leaders assert their position. Puppies wait to eat, and adult dogs wait until the pack leader wants them to travel. Waiting is a form of psychological work for the dog. Domestication means dogs don’t need to hunt for food, but they can still work for it. Establish your position as pack leader by asking your dog to work. Take him on a walk before you feed him. And just as you don’t give affection unless your dog is in a calm-submissive state, don’t give food until your dog acts calm and submissive. Exercise will help the dog, especially a high-energy one, to achieve this state. The true test of leadership is knowing your pack. I

want to know my pack and what fulfills them. This is what creates balance. Then formulating a dog training plan, setting an intention, and following through is what creates even more strength in your relationship, bond, and its depth. To me, that’s respect, both of the needs of your dog and yourself. This is what distinguishes the true pack leader from the rest. They are honest. They are real. They accept. They are in touch. They are present. They are respectful. They are balanced. And they know their pack. In all of these ways, the pack leader in nature sets rules, boundaries, and limitations for her pack, and in doing so, nurtures her dog’s healthy state of mind. Source: www.cesarsway.com

Shandy needs a new home. She was rescued from a bin when she was only a few days old and we have done our best to look after her up until now. However, as a single mum who works all day and travels a lot, I can no longer give her the attention, love and long walks she needs. She is a very friendly and loving dog and has been great with my girls. As part whippet though, she really needs more outside space and long walks/runs every day. I hope you will love her and find her a new home.

19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador. Thursday 6th February the 19th Hole Golf Society visited Valle del Este golf course to play a Team Waltz. Good turnout enabled us to have 5 four ball teams without having to employ a Ghost. As the temperatures drop during winter life becomes increasingly tough for the motorist. Just getting into the car can be a problem. On an icy day a friend of mine swears by dipping the key to his old car in boiling water and then inserting it into the lock. But you don’t need to do that anymore I tell him because Autoglym de-icer can be sprayed anywhere on the car including the locks, without damaging the paintwork. You can’t say that about many de-icers. Any ice on the windows can be easily removed by the de-icer and scraper

that form part of the Autoglym Winter Collection. The next hurdle is the inside of the windscreen which invariably will be caked in condensation and in older cars even ice. The Autoglym microfibre cloth makes very light work of removing this leaving no smears as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The collection also includes All Seasons Quick Clear screenwash. The 500ml container makes up to 8 litres of screenwash. It keeps the windscreen clear all year round and removes dead bugs, too.

Boat Fishing

‘Orca Steve’ managed to get a couple of trips out despite bad winds and big seas most days. One trip out was with ‘Albanchez Steve’, ‘Pandora Pete’ and ‘Somalia Colin’ on a chilly but sunny day with the wind gusting from the land at quite a speed so it was a case of finding some fish activity on the sonar and dropping the anchor in a position that sat them over the shoals. They were soon into pandoras of a decent size, pickerels, Atlantic and Spanish mackerel, brown striped combers, small dentex and couch bream and the dreaded weavers. The wind was constantly changing direction and force and there was a strong southerly current which made the fishing and holding bottom difficult but the lads did well and coped without too many tangles. Colin has gone back for his last stint in Somalia and hopes to semi retire back to Spain so that he can get plenty of fishing in! (Let’s all wish him lots of luck for his last stint in what must be one of the most dangerous places in the world)

Cortijo Grande Cortijo Grande members and 40 plus had two days of golf in the worst conditions you can have and that was high winds. Our members should take a pat on the back for playing in these conditions. My thanks to them for showing ther resilience.

Wednesday 5th Feb 014 and two divisions. The first div winner with 29 points Greg Ward second with another 29 Bob Winter

Steve’s second trip out was some lads from the Albox fishing club who have been itching to get out on the boat making a change from their beach fishing days. ‘Tiddlerwinks John’, ‘Dennis the menace’, ‘Stay behind Brian’, Gordon and ‘Herman the Caster’ braved the chilly conditions and a morning following 80km winds to try their luck dangling a prawn. To be honest, the sea conditions were pretty good as the west wind had flattened the swell and when the gusty wind dropped it was quite pleasant. Steve anchored up on the edge of a large underwater sandy basin with the boat stationary on the top of the drop in where the fish were shoaling. The lads caught the usual pandoras, pickerels, Atlantic and Spanish mackerel, brown striped combers, small dentex and couch bream the dreaded weavers and some small red snappers. Gordon had been troubled by an Octopus for most of the morning and he eventually got his own back and landed the slimy critter on board although it was too small to keep so it went back to trouble us again another day. ‘Pugwash Pete’ got out a couple of times last week, the first trip out the sea was very flat and calm, he anchored in 300 feet but fished a big drop off of 390 feet. Pete was rewarded with his second ever serpent eel of about

Second time out Pete fished in 160 feet and drifted first catching a European eel about 3 feet in length then caught a nice blue mouth in about 400 feet. He also caught a lot of pandoras and combers. Shore Fishing. ‘Chef Jeremy’ saw an angler catch two 4lb sea bass from the rocks near the Repsol Garage on the Garrucha to Mojacar road. Big crashing waves obviously brought them in close. Coarse Fishing there were four matches in Murcia won with top weights of: 10.46kg, 10.08kg, 8.28kg and 5.6kg. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. A DPF is equipped to most modern diesel engines to take out particles from the exhaust gases of diesel engines. This is done to meet various emission standards throughout the world. During general driving the filter fills up and once it reaches a certain level a 30% - 40% the ECU will at will cause the engine to run with a higher exhaust temperature to burn any collected particles and turn them into soot. This is known as the DPF regeneration cycle. Of course the regeneration causes the waste to be sent through the exhaust out into the atmosphere, making the whole concept overall questionable. Effectively, over time the DPF holds back particles, so yes the exhaust is cleaner, then it throws out everything at once during regeneration? Eventually the DPF will need replacing as it can only be regenerated a limited number of times in its life.

• No more limp modes - The ECU can cause the engine to go into Limp Mode to limit potential damage if there is a DPF regeneration failure, which would have meant another expensive garage visit • No expensive DPF replacements • When combined with a remap at the same the performance and economy improvements to the vehicle can be quite astounding It is an offence under the Road vehicles Regulations to use a vehicle which has been modified in such a way that it no longer complies with the air pollutant emissions standards it was designed to meet. After the DPF has been disassembled and modified together with a remap of the ECU, the emissions are as good or better that before. You never have to worry about the problems the DPF causes or the expense of replacement ever again, and at a fraction of the cost. For more information and advice speak to Paul at Autotune. ASSSA - your private health insurer in Spain Change from your current health insurance to ASSSA Currently, many European citizens are experiencing changes which are bringing the effects of the crisis in Spain much closer to home. Some of you may be losing your entitlement to a SIP card while others, who already have private insurance, are finding out that their insurance company has been bought out by another insurance group. This has imposed limitations on their level of service or even on their quality of cover. Many have since discovered that they will no longer be able to visit the private doctor of their choice because the new company does not have a contract with them any more. Are you in either situation? Would you consider a reasonably priced private health insurance with ASSSA so that you can visit local, English speaking doctors in Spain? Are you privately insured, but dissatisfied: premium increases; no customer service in your language; your insurance company has radically reduced and changed their services? ASSSA offers you impartial advice and tailor-made solutions with special offers available and special conditions for those transferring in from another private insurer.
