Seven holidaymakers from Spain raped in Mexican beach resort
Seven Spanish tourists were gang-raped by armed men who broke into their beach-front villa in Acapulco, south-western México, say official sources. The women were all asleep when gun-wielding intruders burst into their holiday accommodation, although due to the trauma and confusion, they were unable to say how many men there were in total. Authorities in the area have sent out a police search party to find the men and bring them to justice. Further information is not known at present, except that one of the victims may be Mexican rather than Spanish and that they were staying in the Alfredo V Bonfil holiday complex on the Barra Vieja road, close to the beach. Spain’s foreign office says in general, México’s main tourist hotspots are very safe provided holidaymakers do not stray too far off the beaten track, and that most of the violence – frequently drug-related – appears to take place in the northern border towns. But Acapulco, despite being a popular area for seaside holidays, is said to be the only main tourist destination in the country with safety and security problems. In 2011, according to the World Tourism Organisation, México was 10th in the world list of most-popular holiday destinations, having seen 23.4 million tourists that year alone.

Demonstration outside Merkel’s office during Rajoy’s visit to Berlin
Dozens of protesters gathered outside the officers of German Chancellor Angela Merkel today during Spanish president Mariano Rajoy’s visit, calling for the latter to resign over the ‘slush fund’ scandal involving former treasurer Luis Bárcenas. Rajoy told Merkel that the claims he and other members of the PP were given backhanders in cash were ‘completely false’, and
the party maintains that the ledgers found by Spanish national newspaper El País in Bárcenas’ handwriting were photocopies and largely inaccurate. They appear to show Rajoy received a total of 25,200 euros a year ‘off the books’, and other top-flight PP members also did so. Bárcenas was classified as a ‘high-risk’ client by two Swiss banks he held multi-million-
euro accounts with, and who held ‘off the record’ conversations with each other when certain financial transactions by the former treasurer caused them concern. They also liaised closely over Bárcenas’ alleged involvement with the Gürtel corruption trial. Companies involved in the Gürtel case are believed to have given gifts running into
More than a week of protests over education reforms & funding cuts
Over 30 protests in cities across Spain are due to take place on Wednesday with pupils from primary, secondary, sixth form and university taking to the streets – and a further demonstration on Thursday led by teachers, parents and other education workers. In several major cities, gatherings are already taking place with pickets set up and information stands explaining about the funding cuts in education and healthcare. This forms part of the second ‘week of fighting back’ organised by the National Students’ Union (SE) made up of numerous country-
wide pressure groups and unions. Classes will be held on the street on Saturday for universities in Madrid in protest over rocketing student fees and a further three to seven days of strikes and demonstrations over the proposed education reform and reduced funding in schooling from primary and infants through to university level. The protesters are calling for education minister José Ignacio Wert to resign and to ‘refund’ the more than five billion euros in cutbacks made to the schools system in 2012.
hundreds of euros and paid for parties and holidays for health minister Ana Mato and her ex-husband, former mayor of Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), Jesús Sepúlveda. Both Mato and Sepúlveda deny receiving any of these so-called backhanders. Regional president of Castilla-La Mancha, María Dolores del Cospedal, is also believed to have received cash-in-hand top-ups to her wages. Names of high-level PP members appear in the handwritten ledgers over the 10-year period leading up to 2008. And protests outside the PP head office in Madrid, involving literally thousands of members of the public, are now into their fifth day. The PP continues to insist its conscience is clear, but Rajoy has not provided any explanations or answered any questions posed to him beyond denying the allegations.

Brother of Luis de Guindos cross-examined over Madrid Arena tragedy
The brother of Spain’s finance minister has been called by the courts to testify in connection with the Madrid Arena tragedy which caused the death of five young women, together with the chief of police and the city’s emergency services coordinator. Antonio de Guindos (pictured), councillor for citizen safety in Madrid and whose brother Luis is minister for finance in the central government, is in charge of the city’s police forces and would have been responsible for ensuring sufficient numbers of officers were on duty at the Hallowe’en party. Head of the Local Police, Emilio Monteagudo and the then councillor for emergency services, Fátima Núñez, are also required to give statements. Monteagudo reportedly failed to prevent a mass bring-your-own-bottle drinking party in the car park, which had actually been set aside for the purpose by the organisers, despite city and regional bye-laws forbidding alcohol consumption in the open air in public areas. Núñez was supposed to have coordinated the police and ensure emergency ambulances staffed with paramedics were on duty, but health authorities were not even contacted to tell them the party was happening. Although councillor for the economy Pedro Calvo and the alderman, or deputy mayor Miguel Ángel Villanueva have already been removed from their posts as a result of the tragedy, Madrid’s mayoress Ana Botella kept De Guindos in his role because she considered him ‘the most important person in the city council’. And De Guindos himself says he will not stand down unless and until a judge finds him guilty. Simón Viñals, former PP councillor, who was head of health operations on the night of the party the doctor on duty at the fiesta – who was actually retired at the time – and his son

Police called out to party of 135 guests in Valencia student flat
Police in Valencia were forced to intervene when a student party in a flat got out of hand – and ordered 135 revellers to leave the building. Tenant Stefano, 24, and his flatmate Gino, of the same age, who are both Italian, said: “We threw a birthday party and invited about 20 friends, but they all brought other mates along and we couldn’t leave them out in the street. “The doorbell never stopped ringing and I was constantly busy serving drinks to everyone.” Officers counted 135 partygoers in their late teens
and early 20s in one flat. And when they arrived after being called out by neighbours complaining about the noise at around 02.00hrs, they found the entrance hall stacked two or three people high and some fell out of the door when it was opened. “We were terrified the ceiling would collapse with the weight of all the people inside,” complained downstairs neighbour Amparo M. The police counted 135. I couldn’t believe it.” Unable to enter the flat due to the sheer quantity of people in it, Local Police called for the
tenant to come to the door. “They told me off because we were disturbing the neighbours,” Stefano explained. But he cooperated freely with the police and apologised repeatedly. He turned off the music as instructed and called for his friends to leave in an orderly fashion and in single file – although many bore carrier bags filled with alcohol and soft drinks to finish off their celebrating elsewhere. Stefano and Gino commented: “The other night we went over the top, but it won’t happen again.”

Unbeatable prices, subject to availability The longest established Spa specialist in this part of Spain Carlos Viñals Larruga, are both also required to testify for their involvement. Emergency ambulance coordinators accused Viñals Senior of not doing everything he could to save the lives of three of the girls who died, to which he replied, “all night looking after people who were drunk and now they throw this at me.” Dr Viñals said at the time the means he had to hand were totally insufficient for a party of the size of the one at Madrid Arena. His son Carlos, doctor and council consultant who is head of the occupational health department, was helping his father that night, even though he is not supposed to carry out any paid work outside of the council. But Dr Viñals Junior says he did not get paid for that night and was only helping his father as a favour. Three girls died at the scene – Cristina Arce, Katia Esteban Casielles and Rocío Oña Pineda, all aged 18 – after being crushed to death in a stampede as revellers tried to enter the building. Belén Langdon, 17, was rushed to hospital and died two days later without regaining consciousness, and María Teresa Alonso, 20, spent a month in a deep coma before passing away. It has since been found that entry controls were minimal, emergency exits sealed off and the maximum capacity of the venue exceeded by over 100 per cent.

Bank staff protest against thousands of redundancies
Ryanair ‘will increase flight prices’
as ECJ forces it to compensate for cancellations
Low-cost airline Ryanair says it is going to increase its ticket prices to make up for the European ruling that it will have to compensate passengers for delays and cancellations following the Icelandic volcano eruption. According to the report, by ThinkSpain, a Bank staff protest against thousands of redundancies irports throughout Europe, including Spain, were like ghost towns in early spring 2010 after an ash cloud from the Eyjäfjällajøkull led authorities to shut the airspace across the north of the continent. Thousands of passengers were left stranded and unable to return home, having to fork out extra for accommodation, transport and food that they had not banked on, whilst others had their holidays cancelled as they could not fly. Most other airlines refunded tickets and, where customers were stuck abroad, provided hotels and food until they were able to be repatriated. But Ryanair has always refused to do so on the grounds that the flight cancellations were caused by an incident outside the company’s control. Today, however, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that airlines were responsible for assistance costs for passengers affected by flights being grounded due to extraordinary circumstances, such as the volcano eruption. “Ryanair is very sorry to hear about the ECJ’s decision to allow passengers to claim for compensation for flight delays which are clearly outside the control of the

airlines,” said the Irish-based firm in a press conference. Its management claims that flight firms across Europe will have to increase their end prices to the consumer. “Now that we have to pay out these costs, we shall have to recoup them from our customers, since a defective European regulation means we cannot recover them from governments or syndicates, who were responsible for 95 per cent of the flight delays,” says Ryanair’s chief executive officer, Michael O’Leary. “When the governments across Europe unnecessarily closed huge chunks of air-space due to the non-existent ‘ash cloud’ hanging over Ireland, the UK and the continent in 2010, travel insurance companies wriggled out of their liability to customers by claiming the cause was an ‘Act of God’. “This makes the airlines a ‘last-resort insurance company’, even where, in the majority of cases, delays and cancellations are caused by air-traffic controllers or national strikes.” The latter statement is a clear reference to Spain, which has seen a number of countrywide strikes in the past two years, as well as a widespread air-traffic controller strike in December 2010 which led the then president to declare a ‘state of emergency’ to prevent them. However, the air-traffic controllers went ahead with their strike, putting them on the wrong side of the law.
Staffworking for Bankia and Banco de Valencia staged a strike and protest march last week over the mass redundancies about to take place. The demonstration, which was held across the country, was a prelude to a nationwide bank workers’ strike on Wednesday, February 6 – the first-ever in the sector since the 1990s. In response to EU demands, banks which have been bailed out have been ordered to carry out radical restructures, including eliminating thousands of staff members in a country which already has one of the worst unemployment rates in Europe, with 26.6 per cent of the population, or six million people, out of a job. Bankia alone is shedding 4,900 employees, and workers across the industry estimate that a further 20,000 in total could go in Spanish banks this year. They are protesting because they say it was politicians and greedy bank bosses whose poor financial management caused the crisis in the sector, and yet it is the ‘shop floor’ people – the workers – who have to pay the price. Their aim is to get the banks to cut the number of redundancies as much as possible, and offer the best possible conditions to those who, in the end, do have to be let go of. Around 20 provincial capital cities in Spain are expected to join the strike.
Jail for food thief - in spite of homeowner’s pardon
A MAN who stole food from a fridge has been jailed for three and a half years – despite the owner of the house saying she does not wish to press charges. The accused got in by taking a window out of its frame, which is considered forcible and violent entry, and which was the main aspect that landed him in jail. He stole sausages and lobsters, among other things, from the refrigerator of a home in Vigo, in the north-western region of Galicia. The owner of the house would have been entitled to compensation from the burglar, but
she declined to accept any money. “I don’t want anything. He stole food, he must have been hungry – I hope he enjoyed eating it,” she said in court. But it was the fact that this was the second time he had burgled a house that he was sentenced to prison. On the previous occasion, he was given a suspended three-and-a-half-year sentence, which he would not have to serve unless he committed further crimes. And his crime of stealing food from the woman’s fridge means his sentence will now have to be served.

Priest From Spain In Church Paedophile Case Largest-ever In USA History

“It Is Not Fair That The Ordinary Citizen Should Have To Pay For Banks’ And Governments’ Mistakes”
European President Martin Schulz says Spain’s unemployment rate is ‘shameful’ and should be the Union’s top priority above any other issues. Speaking at the 40th anniversary summit of the European Confederation of Trade Unions (CES), the Parliament leader said the jobless figures in Spain and certain other EU nations are ‘totally unacceptable’, especially where the affect the young. Over half of Spain’s under-35s are out of work and most have been for more than a year. Unemployment rates stand at 26.6 per cent, with six million currently out of a job. “Cutting jobless rates must be the primary aim of the EU, since policies of funding cuts and tax hikes are merely a way of taking money off the taxpayer and giving it to the banks,”
Schulz stated. He also had a pop at ‘those who want to leave the European Union’, a clear reference to UK prime minister David Cameron, and added that the problem with the EU was not its basic principles but its ‘onesize-fits-all’ policies. Schulz says Spain should exert ‘more pressure’ on German Chancellor Angela Merkel to put in place growth policies, but he does not believe president Mariano Rajoy has the strength of character to do so. In fact, Rajoy attempted to do just that this weekend, leading to his and Merkel’s first public disagreement. The Parliamentary president warned there was a ‘catastrophic’ level of ‘social and economic inequality’ in the EU. “Something is not right
when the most highlyqualified people in Greece are having to filch through bins for food and yet the most expensive property in Berlin is also bought by Greeks,” he declared. And social and economic inequality is rife within member States, not just between countries, Schulz added. “At the end of the day, the common market of the EU depends upon whether its citizens can participate in it – all of them, not just those of certain member States,” Schulz continued. “And it is totally wrong that the ordinary person on the street has to bear the burden of a nation’s failure to keep its deficit within manageable levels, or that the general public should have to foot the bill for the huge costs generated by major banking firms.”

This week, Cardinal Mahony, who is also said to be involved in the case – the largestever paedophile racket within the church in the history of the USA – has been removed from his duties. A total of 12,000 pages of internal communications, psychiatric reports and correspondence with the Vatican about 122 priests of the Diocese of Los Ángeles gives details of the alleged abuse cases affecting children under 18. The Auxiliary Archbishop at the time, Thomas J. Curry, who is said to have worked alongside Mahony to hide the
The current Archbishop of Los Ángeles, José Gómez, said: “This material documents abuse cases which happened decades ago, but that does not make them any less serious. Reading through it is a brutal and painful experience. “The behaviour described in these papers is sad and evil – there is no excuse, no explanation for what happened to these children. “Priests involved at the time had a duty as spiritual fathers, and they failed in that duty. The cannot undo their past mistakes described in these reports. “Reading them and reflecting on the damage they caused has been the saddest experience I have had since I became Archbishop,” concluded Gómez. Back in 2007, the Archdiocese of Los Ángeles came to an agreement with over 500 victims of child sex abuse, paying off their families to the tune of 660 million dollars in total, which came from the Church’s pocket. At the time, Mahony called these incidences ‘a terrible crime and a sin’.
Mali Future Debated At Brussels Meeting
UN, European and African officials are due to meet in Brussels to discuss how to hold democratic elections in Mali in the summer. They will also discuss the security and humanitarian situation in the wake of last year’s coup and the current offensive against Islamist militants. French and Malian forces are forcing back al-Qaeda-linked fighters who seized the vast north of the country. The US and France want African troops to take over from French forces. Meanwhile, French warplanes have been bombing rebel bases and depots in remote parts of northern Mali to try to cut off their supply routes.

incidences of sexual assault on youngsters, has also resigned from his post in Santa Bárbara (California).
Correspondents say the rapid progress of the French-led force has put the diplomatic focus on how to ensure lasting security in Mali. “When a state falls apart, it takes a while to put it back together again. Nevertheless, we need to try,” said one senior EU official quoted by Reuters. “In the medium term, we need to look at ensuring the north has adequate funds for development so the communities there can build real livelihoods,” the official added. The international support group for Mali, meeting in Brussels on Tuesday, will discuss how to support a political process leading to elections that interim President Dioncounda Traore has said Mali hopes to hold on 31 July.

Five-year-old held for 29 hours in cell at Barajas airport
A five-year-old girl who flew to Madrid from Honduras to see her mum for the first time in over four years was held in a cell at Barajas airport for 29 hours. Little Alexa had travelled from the capital, Tegucigalpa, with her cousin Dulce, aged 19. Alexa’s mother had been living and working in Spain and sending money home to Honduras for her family, a practice common in many Latin American countries where there are few jobs. The terrified pair were kept in a tiny cell with just a chair, a bed and a toilet for more than a day after officials would not let them through the border. Alexa’s mum Wendy said her daughter and the girl’s cousin had come to Spain to spend a week’s holiday there, and all their papers were in order – valid passport, return flight ticket and enough money for the duration of their stay. But it seems border police did not believe they had sufficient funds to keep them for a week in Spain. Wendy had begun to panic when the 10.50hrs flight from Tegucigalpa landed without incident on January 31 and her daughter and niece did not appear. After being told bluntly by officials that they were being held in a room for illegal immigrants, she contacted a firm of solicitors through her boss in Madrid.
More than a day after landing, the little girl was finally allowed through customs and met with her mother, whom she has not seen since she was a few months old. But cousin Dulce was forced to return home on the plane 48 hours after her arrival – having seen no more of Spain than the inside of a cell. Dulce said she was ‘so depressed’ after two days in a tiny room that ‘all she wanted’ was to be sent home to her parents in Honduras. Wendy says she and the rest of the family have been extremely worried about whether Dulce was alright, whether she was being given anything to eat or drink and whether she had anywhere to sleep, and says she is very upset that her niece was unable to enjoy a few days in Madrid with her. The young mother says ‘there is no way’ her daughter is going to go back to Honduras alone this coming week, and her solicitors are attempting to get her residence in Spain. One of the solicitors, Diana Galindo, says she hopes her firm can prevent the five-year-old’s deportation after 29 ‘bloodthirsty’ hours in a tiny room in Barajas airport. “Now that she’s here, we’re going to try to make sure she stays,” Galindo explains. But they only have until Thursday this week, when the child has a return flight back to Tegucigalpa.

music with mark Bob Marley was born in the village of Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica as Nesta Robert Marley. A Jamaican passport official would later swap his first and middle names. Marley became friends with Neville “Bunny” Livingston (later known as Bunny Wailer), with whom he started to play music. He left school at the age of 14 to make music with Joe Higgs, a local singer and devout Rastafari. At a jam session with Higgs and Livingston, Marley met Peter McIntosh (later known as Peter Tosh), who had similar musical ambitions. In 1962, Marley recorded his first two singles, “Judge Not” and “One Cup of Coffee”, with local music producer Leslie Kong. These songs, released on the Beverley’s label under the pseudonym of Bobby Martell, attracted little attention. The songs were later re-released on the box set Songs of Freedom, a posthumous collection of Marley’s work. In 1963, Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Beverley Kelso, and Cherry Smith formed a ska and rock steady group, calling themselves “The Teenagers”. They later changed their name to “The Wailing Rudeboys”, then to “The Wailing Wailers”, at which point they were discovered by record producer Coxsone Dodd. They finally changed the bands name to “The Wailers”. By 1966, Braithwaite, Kelso, and Smith had left The Wailers, leaving the core trio of Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh. In 1972, the Wailers entered
into an ill-fated deal with CBS Records and embarked on a tour with American soul singer Johnny Nash. Broke, the Wailers became stranded in London. Marley turned up at Island Records founder and producer Chris Blackwell’s London office, and asked him to advance the cost of a new single. Since Jimmy Cliff, Island’s top reggae star, had recently left the label, Blackwell was primed for a replacement. In Marley, Blackwell recognized the elements needed to snare the rock audience: “I was dealing with rock music, which was really rebel music. I felt that would really be the way to break Jamaican music. But you needed someone who could be that image. When Bob walked in he really was that image. Blackwell told Marley he wanted The Wailers to record a complete album (essentially unheard of at the time). When Marley told him it would take between £3,000 and £4,000, Blackwell trusted him with the greater sum. Despite their “rude boy” reputation, the Wailers returned to Kingston and honored the deal, delivering the album Catch a Fire. The Wailers’ first major label album, Catch a Fire was released worldwide in April 1973, packaged like a rock record with a unique Zippo lighter lift-top. Initially selling 14,000 copies, it didn’t make Marley a star, but received a positive critical reception It was followed later that year by Burning, which included the standout songs “Get Up, Stand Up”, and “I Shot the Sheriff”, which appealed to the ear of Eric Clapton. Bob Marley
recorded a cover of the track in 1974 which became a huge American hit, raising Marley’s international profile. Many Jamaicans were not keen on the new “improved” reggae sound on Catch A Fire, but the Trenchtown style of Burnin’ found fans across both reggae and rock audiences.[ The Wailers were scheduled to open 17 shows for the number one black act in the States, Sly and the Family Stone. After 4 shows, the band was fired because they were more popular than the acts they were opening for. The Wailers broke up in 1974 with each of the three main members pursuing solo careers. Despite the break-up, Marley continued recording as “Bob Marley & The Wailers”. In 1975, Marley had his international breakthrough with his first hit outside Jamaica, “No Woman, No Cry”, from the Natty Dread album. This was followed by his breakthrough album in the United States, Rastaman Vibration1976), which spent four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.In December 1976, two days before “Smile Jamaica”, a free concert organized by the Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley in an attempt to ease tension between two warring political groups, Marley, his wife, and manager Don Taylor were wounded in an assault by unknown gunmen inside Marley’s home. Taylor and Marley’s wife sustained serious injuries, but later made full recoveries. Bob Marley received minor wounds in the chest and arm. The shooting was thought to have been politically motivated, as many felt the concert was really a support rally for Manley. Nonetheless, the concert proceeded, and an injured Marley performed as scheduled, two days after the attempt. When asked why, Marley responded, “The people who are trying to make this world worse aren’t taking a day off. How can I?” (Marley left Jamaica at the end of 1976, and after a month-long “recovery and writing” sojourn at the site of Chris Blackwell’s Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, arrived in England, where he spent two years in self-imposed exile. Whilst there he recorded the albums Exodus and Kaya. Exodus stayed on the British album charts for 56 consecutive weeks. It included four UK hit singles: “Exodus”, “Waiting in Vain”, “Jamming”, and “One Love” (a rendition of Curtis Mayfield’s hit, “People Get Ready”). During his time in London, he was arrested and received a conviction for possession of a small quantity of cannabis. In 1978, Marley returned to Jamaica and performed at another political concert, the One Love Peace Concert, again in an effort to calm warring parties. Near the end of the performance, by Marley’s request, Michael Manley (leader of then-ruling People’s National Party) and his political rival Edward Seaga (leader of the opposing Jamaica Labour Party), joined each other on stage and shook hands, something no one thought they would ever see. Under the name Bob Marley and the Wailers eleven albums were released, four live albums and seven studio albums. The releases included Babylon by Bus, a double live album with thirteen tracks, were released in 1978 and received critical acclaim. This album, and specifically the final track “Jamming” with the audience in a frenzy, captured the intensity of Marley’s live performances. Survival, a defiant and politically charged album, was released in 1979. Tracks such as “Zimbabwe”, “Africa Unite”, “Wake Up and Live”, and “Survival” reflected Marley’s support for the struggles of Africans. His appearance at the Amandla Festival in Boston in July 1979 showed his strong opposition to South African apartheid, which he already had shown in his song “War” in 1976. In early 1980, he was invited to perform at the 17 April celebration of Zimbabwe’s Independence Day. Uprising (1980) was Bob Marley’s final studio album, and is one
of his most religious productions; it includes “Redemption Song” and “Forever Loving Jah”. Confrontation, released posthumously in 1983, contained unreleased material recorded during Marley’s lifetime, including the hit “Buffalo Soldier” and new mixes of singles previously only available in Jamaica. In July 1977, Marley was found to have a type of malignant melanoma under the nail of one of his toes. Contrary to urban legend this lesion was not primarily caused by an injury during a soccer match in that year, but was instead a symptom of the already existing cancer. Marley turned down doctors’ advice to have his toe amputated, citing his religious beliefs. Despite his illness, he continued touring and was in the process of scheduling a world tour in 1980. The intention was for Inner Circle to be his opening act on the tour but after their lead singer Jacob Miller died in Jamaica in March 1980 after returning from a scouting mission in Brazil this was no longer mentioned. The album Uprising was released in May 1980 (produced by Chris Blackwell), on which Redemption Song is particularly considered to be about Marley coming to terms with his mortality. The band completed a major tour of Europe, where they played their biggest concert, to a hundred thousand people in Milan. After the tour Marley went to America, where he performed two shows at Madison Square Garden as part of the Uprising Tour. Shortly afterwards, his health deteriorated and he became very ill; the cancer had spread throughout his body. The rest of the tour was cancelled and Marley sought treatment at the Bavarian clinic of Josef Issels, where he received a controversial type of cancer therapy partly based on avoidance of certain foods, drinks, and other substances. After fighting the cancer without success for eight months, Marley boarded a plane for his home in Jamaica. While flying home from Germany to Jamaica, in acceptance that he was going to die, Marley’s vital functions worsened. After landing in Miami, Florida, he was taken to the hospital for immediate medical attention. He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami (now University of Miami Hospital) on the morning of 11 May 1981, at the age of 36. The spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain caused his death. His final words to his son Ziggy were “Money can’t buy life”. Marley received a state funeral in Jamaica on 21 May 1981, which combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafarian tradition. He was buried in a chapel near his birthplace with his red Gibson Les Paul (some accounts say it was a Fender Stratocaster).[ Personally I remember seeing Bob Marley at The Lyceum in London I knew little of Reggae and nothing about Marley. I have seen many artists and group live and I can honestly say his concert was one of the best I have ever been to. The charisma, the power and of course the music of Bob Marley will stand tall for as long as music is listened to truly a legend in all sense of the word.

Duke of Palma faces 20 years in jail and 8.2-million bail release
Son-in-law of the King, Iñaki Urdangarín (pictured) is facing an 8.2-millioneuro bail release for his alleged involvement in a corruption case involving misappropriation of public funds and moneylaundering. Husband of the Infanta Cristina, one of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía’s two daughters – known as ‘Infantas’ rather than ‘Princesses’ because they are not direct heirs to the throne – and Duke of Palma Urdangarín is said to have set up the Nóos Institute as a ‘non-profit-making’ organisation in order to benefit from the maximum possible amount of central and regional government grants. He and his business partner, Diego Torres, who faces a similar bail bond, are believed to have ‘plotted’ to use Urdangarín’s position as member of the Royal family by marriage to heighten the

Protesters call for PP members paid cash-in-hand to resign
Over 500 people protested in front of the PP headquarters in Madrid last week, and at least 200,000 people have signed a petition on www.change.org calling for president Mariano Rajoy and his cabinet to resign over claims that he and other party members received wage top-ups ‘off the books’ for 11 years. Police had to cordon off the C/ Génova in the capital and remove 150 people from the entrance to the PP’s offices during the massive demonstration which started at 20.00hrs last night. The State prosecutor has declared publicly that there are ‘strong grounds’ for ‘investigating’ the PP’s financial affairs after handwritten records by former treasurer and senator Luis Bárcenas were found

detailing cash-in-hand payments out of public funds to Rajoy and other top-flight party members. These include regional president of Castilla-La Mancha, María Dolores del Cospedal, and several of her predecessors. Rajoy, according to these records uncovered by Spanish national newspaper El País, was getting 25,200 euros a year ‘on the black’ in addition to his salary between 1997 and 2008. And the public are calling for all those PP members who received extra money tax-free to stand down. Bárcenas held accounts with two Swiss banks, the managers of which began to hold ‘off the record’ conversations with each other after financial transactions carried out caused concern and

Both the accused men will be obliged to pay back all the public funding they obtained illegally, plus interest amounting to one third, taking the total up to the 8,189,448 euros they will each have to pay out to avoid going to jail while the trial is in motion. The ex-senator and treasurer is believed to have ‘laundered’ 10.9 million euros through Rajoy’s tax amnesty, whereby those who had illegally kept money off the books were invited to declare this without fear of reprisal. But the tax office, the ministry of Hacienda, denies Bárcenas ever took advantage of the taxation amnesty.

SOLTIMES FEBRUARY 2013
FAREWELL COOKIE
The EHCRC Foundation would like to inform all of our supporters that, sadly, Cookie has been put to sleep. The decision was made before Christmas by Cookie’s vet and Co-Founders Sue and Rod Weeding. Sadly, Cookie’s condition was deteriorating to the point where nothing else could be done for her and they obviously wouldn’t allow her to be in any pain. However, Cookie has left a legacy that will help save other horses in the future; because of the friendship that has developed between EHCRC and the Benijofar Council since her rescue, the centre knows that if any other horse needs help in Benijofar, the Council will respond. The EHCRC was initially contacted by Councillor Pat Taylor from Benijofar Council on Easter Saturday 2010, who informed the centre that there was a pony abandoned in terrible condition, and asking if they could help. They immediately went out and brought Cookie back to the centre. She got her name on the way back in the trailer as she insisted standing up the whole way, despite her appalling condition; Sue Weeding, who was with her in the trailer, commented at the time “that’s one tough little Cookie”. One of the first tasks was to cut large amounts of her coat off, as it was encased in her own faeces where she had obviously laid for months, too ill to stand. It took Sue and Justin – the UK representative who was working at the centre at the time – two days to clean her up and from there on, she received all the love, care and of course medical treatment that was necessary to ensure that she had a pain free and happy life at the centre. Co-founder Sue Weeding said “I am sorry that we haven’t announced the loss of Cookie before. However, at the time that Cookie was put to sleep our fantastic supporter, Solvi Jansen, was fighting a losing battle against cancer. Solvi was
extremely attached to Cookie, and we didn’t want to cause any further upset to Solvi, or her sister kate who was nursing her, during their own very difficult time. Cookie will always be in our hearts and will have a special place in our memorial garden.” Councillor Pat Taylor would like to pay her own tribute to Cookie: “On Easter Saturday 2010, I received a call from the local police in Benijofar saying that a small horse had been found by the river and needed urgent help. I knew straight away who to call and that was what cemented the friendship between the PSOE in the Town Hall at the time and the Horse Care Centre. Cookie as she was named, had some awful injuries and problems but she was a fighter and came through one thing after another. Sue and I have kept in contact since then and with our then Mayor Daniel Padilla Villa we were invited back to the centre to see how Cookie was getting along. I often visit with a group of friends from Benijofar and we have lunch and search the shop for bargains ! But the most important thing is going round to see all the horses. When Sue phoned me to tell me the sad news that Cookie had died it was a very sad day, and although she had gone through so much in her life, it makes me feel better to know that for almost the last 3 years she had been looked after, cared for and loved by so many people at the centre and all the wellwishers that visited her. Making that call to Sue nearly 3 years ago saved Cookie´s life and gave her the love that she hadn´t known before. It´s a shame there are many more horses in the same position, the centre rescue as many as they can, and by visiting the centre or their shops we can all help to make a difference. Cookie will be fondly remembered by a lot of people”. International Christian Assembly
The Problem of Prostitution Nine out of every ten girls you see soliciting on roundabouts here in the Costas are there against their will trafficked by gangs who have brought them thousands of miles from their home countries simply so they can earn money for them. Here in Torrevieja a group of Christians have been working for months to befriend the abused girls, earn their trust and help them whichever way they can. The help group was launched within the International Christian Assembly church last year but has expanded to include other churches in the area, and since November teams of helpers go out to the roundabouts to meet the girls, offering them friendship, some practical help, and, most importantly, reassurance that someone loves them and does not simply want to abuse them. Worryingly, many of the girls are seen only one or twice and then they disappear, replaced by others. What has happened to the missing girls, noone seems to know. Some of the girls are young teenagers, frightened into submission amid threats to themselves and their families. They feel unwanted, and totally helpless, controlled by the gangs. So far about 60 girls have been given comfort and help, shown that God loves them and will care for them. The help group plans to expand its work over the coming months. Here, their leader (we will call her Maggie - to save her from possible reprisals from the prostitution gangs) writes about her experiences so far. Discount! Discount! Never a better bargain - don’t miss this opportunity. January is the month for the famous “rebajas”. Recently, my daughter bargained a purchase down from 30 Euros to 15 and was ecstatic. We all love finding a sale when looking for an item. But what if that item were a human life? What if the buying and selling involved victimizing a young lady who has been “broken” for sexual purposes by ruthless mafias who have purchased her for their profit? Young ladies who are “legally” raped 10 to 12 times a day for the pleasure of their client? This is the plight of the ladies whom we see daily on our roundabouts and alongside our roadways here in Spain. “There is not a single one of us who wants to be out here,” said one of these ladies right here in Torrevieja from Eastern Europe. The plight of these ladies who are prostituted amounts to Human Slavery in the 21st Century. They are beaten, raped, threatened, contract diseases, and their lives are in danger every day. Some told us that they have incurred a 35,000 Euro debt and must pay it off before they are
allowed their freedom, the price their mafia says they owe for being forced to come to Spain. One might ask the question, “Why don’t they just escape?” Unfortunately, these prostituted ladies are threatened that if they escape, someone will pay for it, meaning that the mafias will hunt down their families and kill someone. For the most part, their families have no idea what they are doing here in Spain. They are under the assumption that they are working normal jobs. The helplessness that they feel, the incapacity to change their situation, and their vulnerability make it impossible for them to see a way out of their slavery. UNICEF states that every 30 seconds, a child is trafficked for sex. In Spain, 90% of the prostitutes are victims of human trafficking. One of the victimized ladies in our area believes that ‘there isn’t a soul in the world that cares if one of us gets killed.’ We have tried to show her that there is a group in Torrevieja that cares. A task force has been formed in Torrevieja with organized and trained volunteers to weekly meet with these ladies, offering them food and a drink. Our desire is to show them compassion, extending friendship and hope, by coming alongside of them. Let me share a real life story of one of these girls that we will call Susi. The first contact with her caught us by surprise. In bringing a snack to her, our role being one of support and love, Susi, surprised at hearing about the value that God has placed on her, started crying uncontrollably. Since then, Susi has managed to break free from her mafia and has returned to her homeland. However, before leaving Torrevieja, she confided in us that the day we first met her, she was at her absolute lowest point. She had gone to the pharmacy and bought medicine, with the idea of taking them that day to end her life. When we showed up, she felt like God had heard her cry and come to her aid, sowing hope in place of despair. Our contact with her gave her the courage to take the necessary steps to break free from her slavery. One may ask, “How can I help these ladies?” The wisest man who ever lived said, “Behold I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and on the side of their oppressors was power, but they had no one to comfort them.” We have a choice to make. Are we going to be comforters or oppressors? A huge part of the solution is raising the awareness of their plight. No one has the right to own another fellow human. No human being should be bought and sold. By Tony Mayes

SOLTIMES FEBRUARY 2013
pause for thought
We’re planning another trip to see our daughter and her family in Tanzania this Easter, so have scheduled a visit to the specialist vaccination centre in Almeria to ascertain what precautions we should be taking. Tablets offering protection from Malaria are of course essential, and certificates of inoculation against Cholera, Typhoid and Yellow Fever are entry requirements for much of Africa, so doubtless we’ll resemble pin-cushions by the time we reach our daughter’s home there! But aren’t we fortunate having the drugs offering protection against these diseases so readily available here in Spain. For many, particularly among those who actually live in Africa, there is little affordable defence against these diseases, which claim the lives of more than a million people every year. And our grandparents too would have had little medicine available to them at any price to offer full protection. We, it seems, are so privileged to be able to travel in this 21st century, at reasonable cost to such far-off places, so confident in our safety. I may try, because I don’t like mosquitoes and their bites irritate, to cover up and sleep at all times under a net, but if I’m careless and get bitten – even if the offending mosquito were carrying the plasmodium parasite that causes malaria, I’m unlikely to get the disease itself if I’ve correctly taken the prescribed treatment. Amazing isn’t it, but we do tend to take for granted, the power of inoculations and other treatments to save us from the effects of the diseases with which we regularly come in contact. And the same is true for the ultimate disease, which the Bible calls ‘sin’. In some amazing way, which we may not fully comprehend, the Bible likens our faith in Jesus to an inoculation against the effects of our wrongdoing. So however much I may fail in my attempts to do good in my life, yet that faith in Him has the power to save me from the effects of my failure; thus restoring a healthy relationship with God..

As promised a more in-depth view into how the components of you computer work. We started last time by touching on the motherboard and more specifically the processor chip. Today I would like to go a little further into the “Brains” of the computer in an attempt to show just how stupid the chip is and how brilliant the minds of those geniuses / genii (depending on which dictionary you choose to read) who devised it’s creation. There is a great deal of excellent information, although it is a little deep in places, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cpu. I suppose the very first question that should be asked is. What does your processor actually do? Today’s modern processors are a hybrid between a simple instruction processor and maths processing. Let’s start with a little background information. You know what a transistor is? Just in case you are not too sure, it is simply a switch. That is it. That is all that it does! It simply redirects the flow of electricity. Think back (if you are old enough) to the good old Morse code. That series of short and long bursts of sound that was used to encode messages for transmission of great distances. Now shorten the bursts of sound down to 1 millionth of a second and take away the speaker. What you now have is called a ‘square wave’ - ON or OFF, or to put it another way ZERO or ONE. For those who already know where this is going, please be patient. Digital equipment only work in ONE’S and ZERO’S. Your MP3 player and mobile phone are all digital. They only work with one’s and zero’s. This method of maths is called BINARY. When we learned to count it was in DENARY or DECIMAL if you prefer. You have 10 fingers (ok, 8 fingers and 2 thumbs, but it adds up to 10) and it was natural to use 1 digit per number. But as digital equipment doesn’t have fingers, it can only use what it does have and that is Zero’s and One’s. This is the absolute basics when it comes to how computers work. Maybe sometime in the future we can examine BINARY maths, but not today! As we have already touched on the maths side of the processor so today we should look at the other aspect of it, The Instruction Processor! Every action that your Computer, Tablet, Mobile phone or any digital device takes, is in response to an instruction! These instructions can be ‘Hard Coded’ and by that I mean integrated within a chip so that they are (usually) incorruptible, or ‘Soft Coded’ as is the case with every other program that you run. So what is the difference? Your computer uses ‘Hard Coded’ instructions when it first starts, as part of POST or Power On Self Test. This, then, gives just enough information to let it know where to find the Operating System and how to start that up. This, in old computer (Geek) speak, is called the ‘Boot Strap’ or ‘Booting’ (from the days when you strapped on your boots before starting the day). Because without it your computer would sit there quietly and cause no problems at all because it just wouldn’t work. The processor has the task of interpreting these instructions and sending the correct information, along the correct path (remember TRON?) to the correct component, so that it can do it’s job and then tell the processor that the job is complete before the processor can move on to the next instruction. I have written a simple exercise for anyone who might be interested in understanding how the computer follows instructions but having run out of space today I will give it to you next week and then finish this section on the instructional side of the processor and focus on the maths. So keep hold of your favourite free newspaper until next week so that you can refresh and then continue. With a little luck everything will be made clear and might have a little fun doing the exercise. If there is anything that we have covered or you have a subject or question involving computer related technology, that you are having trouble with, drop me a line at the email address below. Good Luck and have a lovely weekend. See you next week. For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk
Cops ‘had to laugh’ after bird stole Brit’s cash
A British tourist says a police officer burst out laughing when he reported his money had been stolen - by a parrot. Peter Leach was visiting a New Zealand beauty spot when a kea parrot snatched the equivalent of £600 from his camper van. The bird flew into the vehicle and snatched the cash from the dashboard while Mr Leach was taking photographs at Arthur’s Pass. The 52-year-old, from Glasgow, was unaware of the theft until two fellow tourists pointed it out, reports the Scottish Daily Record. “A Canadian couple walked by and said, ‘We’ve just seen that bird take something out of your van’,” Mr Leach said. It turned out the parrot had taken all of the money he had - except for £20 in his pocket. He reported to incident to police, but the chances of retrieving the currency are slim. “The officer was very serious for the first few questions,” Mr Leach said. “Then he said, ‘Do you mind if I just stop to laugh?’ I suppose I can’t blame him.” Keas are native to New Zealand and known for their intelligence. They have been blamed for vandalising cars, breaking off wing mirrors and windscreen wipers. Zoologist Mark Cawardine described them as “a devilish mountain parrot feared by hire car companies”. Mr Leach remains determined to continue on his travels, with friends apparently loaning him money for the rest of the trip.

This week is the half way show of the series and was the leveller where all the celebrities had to skate for 30 seconds solo. Coupled with a performance by Jayne & Chris skating along with themselves in the form of a moving illustration on a huge screen which was fantastic. These two still have the X factor, are pure poetry in motion and their performances are ageless. This week all the celebrities improved, some considerably more than others. Opening the show were Samia & Sylvain skating to Wings. Samia was in the judges top place last week but the solo section was extremely nervous to watch. She will now need to pick up her solo skating quality to match that with her partner and she ended

up in joint bottom place with only 18.0 from the judges and I awarded her a 5.0. Next out were Keith & Olga with Hernando’s Hideaway. His skating was ok but he lacks in the performance level for me and didn’t look just as confident as previous weeks. I awarded 5.0 and the judges 21.0. Following were Shayne & Maria performing to Mama Told Me Not To Come. I found his performance level had increased quite a lot from last week but he still needs to lift his upper core to go further. The solo section was performed with confidence and I gave him 6.0 with the judges 23.5 and his best score to date. My favourites Matt & Brianne were next out skating to a classical piece of music
and showing his emotional side which was balletic. You really couldn’t tell who the pro skater was with excellent solo work and superb power lifts tricks and skills. The only judges criticism was that his skating footwork could be improved. I gave him a 7.5 and the judges into second place with 28.0. Next and another much improved skate came from Luke & Jenna performing to Little Things and Luke showed some really clean solo skating skills. He was much more confident and is beginning to improve his performing skills too. I gave him a 5.5 and the judges 23.5. They were followed by Gareth & Robyn who was portraying Frank Sinatra with Michael Buble’s The Best Is Yet To Come. This was great and he really got into the moment. He also had the most difficult solo skating steps of all this week and they were peformed with confidence plus. I gave him 7.0 and the judges 27.5. Gymnast Beth and her partner Daniel were next skating to Clown. Beth had taken some acting classes this week to improve her performance skills and it really paid off. Her performance was full of emotion and her solo skating skills were quite a way ahead of the other celebrities. This was a very graceful and elegant performance and I gave her 7.5 and the judges had her in top place with 30.5. She was the most improved performer of the week. Closing the show were Joe & Vicky with Hippy Hippy Shake. Well what can we say about Joe, he is very funny, entertaining to watch and really enjoys his time

What are Talking Therapies?
Individual Talking Therapy and Counselling Sessions
Being able to share your thoughts and feelings that are having a negative effect on your life can, help you look at things in a different way. Talking to someone who is not connected to any of your worries or issues could help you explore, and explain, these thoughts and feelings in a way that you can understand. Speaking to a therapist who can recognise and see problems that you describe by talking about what is going on in your head, can help you see patterns that emerge when certain thoughts and feelings are explored. A therapist can help you work through negative thoughts and feelings help you understand where they come from and why you have them. Talking Therapies can help improve your self-image and confidence by helping you make positive changes through acting and thinking differently.

on the ice but I’m sorry he is now way past his sell by date for the show. He still looks like Bambi on ice and I awarded him 3.5 and the judges in joint bottom place with 18.0. The judges bottom 2 were Joe & Samia but the public bottom 2 were Shayne and surprisingly Matt. Neither should have been here as there were other much weaker skaters. Shayne did a really good skate off program and Matt despite a slip gave a great performance. The judges voted 3 to 1 to retain Matt so unfortunately Shayne lost his position in the show despite his best score to date. What a pity! You never know what is going to happen in this show as this proved so tune in to see what will happen next week. Until then Keep Dancing!
Why is there a stigma attached! Many people feel that admitting you are seeing a therapist makes you a weak person! It takes a very strong person to admit that there is something wrong, it takes an even stronger person to do something about it. So, even when things seem at their lowest, you may feel that you have no control or power left, deciding to talk to someone independent is a start to reclaiming the control back into your life.

Shut Your Mouth & Open Wide I have never really had the fear of dentists that many people experience. Apart from those far off days when, as a little lad, I thought of the dentist as an ogre figure intent on causing me pain with his version of a Black & Decker, and the memory of that dreadful smelling rubber mask over my nose and the equally awful gas – I have always been fairly relaxed about paying him or her a visit. I now regard it more of an inconvenience than anything else. Once, whilst having some minor road works done, I actually dozed off briefly in the dentist’s chair. I was awoken with a start when he yelped as my mouth clamped shut on his hand and thereafter he always ensured that I was reminded of the incident, along with a request to do my best to stay awake.
Trouble was, he had an extremely comfortable treatment chair facing some French doors that overlooked a small enclosed garden. It was a little oasis, with a fruit tree and an explosion of flowering shrubs that was the very essence of tranquillity. Moreover, soft music was always playing in the background and his attractive assistant had a very soothing touch. All in all, he had probably made it too comfortable for his patients. My dentist at that time was Malcolm. He drove a vintage Rolls Royce and his hobby was bird watching and I often wondered if he drove up to his twitching grounds in the Roller. But I never asked. Anyway, on one occasion as I was admiring the view in the tiny garden, a colourful bird appeared and proceeded to peck away at a fragment of sausage roll on the stone bird table. Malcolm stopped assaulting my molars and walked over to the window. “What the heck is that? Not so much directed at me or his silk fingered assistant, but more of a thought voiced out loud. “It’s a Red Cardinal”, I told him. He turned on me in astonishment. “Red Cardinal? I’ve never come

proportions, like the Incredible Hulk, and I am convinced that purple steam was issuing from my ears and that my eyes were flashing lightning. How dare they? How very dare they pinch our compost bin? I wished a plague upon their houses, and invoked hellfire and brimstone to fall upon their heads. I was incandescent with righteous ire as I viewed the binless compost, standing naked and exposed in the corner. Halfway through a particularly fulsome curse it occurred to me that I’d better cover the compost’s vulnerability before it got blown all over the garden. I turned to look for something suitable, and noticed the compost bin, upside down between the corner of the house and the aircon unit, obviously jammed into this undignified position by the capricious wind. Oh. Sorry about the hellfire and brimstone, and I hope your boils get better soon……..
across one of those – how did you know that?” “It’s quite common in Bermuda where I was living”. I continued, “But that one’s a female because although she has a red beak and some red tints in her wings and tail feathers, the male is a vivid red all over. That crest on its head is why it’s called a cardinal. It’s supposed to resemble a cardinal’s hat, although personally I don’t think it looks anything like a cardinal’s hat” - I rambled on. Now it was Malcolm who had his mouth open and I enjoyed the switch. What he didn’t know was that my knowledge of exotic birds was limited to just this one and another regular in our Bermudian garden - the Kiskadee – a bright yellow bloke with a white speed stripe along the side of his head and a distinctive call that gives it it’s name. But I didn’t tell him that. He was even more impressed the following week when I was receiving some follow up treatment, because he had looked the bird up in his Bumper Dental Practitioners Guide to Exotic Birds and confirmed that I was indeed correct in my identification. The only mystery remaining was that, as a native of North America, what it was doing in a dentist’s garden in Bury St Edmunds. I found myself in the dentist’s chair again last week, ostensibly to check out a broken tooth, but also for a more general opinion on why my once
devastating smile had, over a period of years, disappeared up the swanee, and why I seemed to have acquired a lopsided grin. This was a new dentist for me and one who had come highly recommended. “How are you” I asked as I introduced myself. “Good”. Then I told him why I was there and awaited any questions he might have. Instead, all he said was “Okay.” Obviously a man of few words. The seat was fully reclined; I put my head back and opened my chops for the inspection to commence. “So how long have you lived in Spain?” the tooth man asked. “Ghaa, icks earg”, I informed him. “Six years eh”. Some tapping and probing ensued. “Where are you from in England?” “Uh, ohickinly eadin i erckhire”. “I know where Reading is”, he said. “Drove through it once”. “ rilliant” I dribbled. What the hell was this? The man who spoke just two words to me before I was asked to mimic a feeding basking shark, now wanted to have a nice cosy chat about my home town of eadin! But I got him back because by the time he had finished his examination, there must have been half a gallon of my drool dripping off his elbow.

alqueria - Los Gitanos and the crystal ball John MacD
onald (El Sord o) - www.carata The Gypsies of Andalucía cus.eu belong to the Romani Iberian Kale group and it was a column of their caravans that entered Alqueria on that chilly day in February. Attracted by the near anarchy which reigns daily they hoped to settle in the Village Republic. The true freedom which can only be experienced by total chaos became an irresistible lure for these nomadic people. The ramshackle procession crossed the old stone bridge and took up residence on the waste ground east of the R í o Verde. Leading the group was the matriarch La Adivina. The most gifted mystic and teller of fortunes alive today on the Iberian Peninsular. A delegation from the Alquerian Town Hall paid the new arrivals an official visit. Temporary visas had to be arranged and Antonio Poyato wanted the great La Adivina to tell him what was going to win the three-thirty at Zarzuela. Manuela being Minister of Culture and an inquisitive girl insisted that the great prophetess demonstrated her abilities. That evening in the confines of La Adivina’s foul smelling caravan sat Manuela, Rodriquez and the great woman herself. They spoke in hushed tones, an act of great self-control for anyone of Spanish descent. Most Gypsy caravans are spotlessly clean this one however was an exception. The smell of stale cooking odours and human sweat was overpowering. Rodriquez, the most hated man in the village was now apparently despised on the ‘other side’ as well. When a ghostly voice drifted down asking “Is there anybody there” and Rodriquez answered in the affirmative. The voice immediately replied “Is there anybody else there” The lights were dimmed and La Adivina began her preparations. She produced an impressive crystal ball and started to caress her globe, for what purpose it was impossible to say. She started to chant. Manuela was unsure whether she was casting a spell or singing a flamenco cante. The object of the exercise was for the fortune teller to evoke images in her crystal ball which would lay open the very soul of Manuela. It appeared to have worked, La Adivina took one look into her shiny orb and ran screaming from the caravan, eyes wide and tearing at her hair. Manuela’s soul is not a place for the unwary to play. The remainder of the gypsies after seeing their leader so affected believed it to be the result of a curse either on them or Alqueria. They piled into any transport available. Arms and legs protruding from windows and doors as they headed for the high sierra. Here they underwent penance to rid themselves of any curse. Refraining from alcohol, tobacco and pleasures of the flesh for thirty days and presumably nights as well. A tough penance indeed. The people of Alqueria don’t believe their village to be cursed. If it is however it would certainly explain a great deal.

THE SPAINIAC | Catedral de Burgos | Candice Parsons Strategically located in the heart of Burgos city, Catedral de Burgos, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, stands as Spain’s third-largest cathedral. Initiated under the reign of King Ferdinand III of Castile by the English-born Bishop of Burgos - Mauricio, the cathedral’s construction first began in 1221 on the site of a former Romanesque church. From here, the chevet in the east end of the cathedral took nine years to complete. Construction of the cathedral resumed after a hiatus of around 200 years, and then carried on for more than 100 years until it was finally completed in 1567. Notable for taking a total of three centuries to complete, along with its impressive mix of Europe’s most creative artists, architects and craftsmen involved, Catedral de Burgos has imprinted a distinguished presence in not only the Castile and León region, but in Spain as a whole. Reminiscent on Castile’s first kings, the triumphant and soaring steel-grey spires above the sculpted
balustrade of the cathedral can be seen from almost any point within Burgos city. The various artistic influences from Germany, France and other eastern Europe countries that form the flamboyant gothic-style of the cathedral is evident through the cathedral’s unusual features, such as its Latin cross shaped floor-plan, its Jesus human-animal composite crucifix, the Golden Staircase, and the statue of Papamoscas that opens its mouth each hour that the bells ring. The striking architectural intricacy and design of the cathedral summarises the history of Gothic art style through its unique collection of stained-glass windows, reredos, annexes, paintings, tombs and choir stalls. Also known as Catedral de Santa María, the site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984. Catedral de Burgos has been described by Frommer’s travel guides as one of Spain’s best cathedrals, and with its extravagant depiction of both art and history, the cathedral has increasingly attracted more and more tourists to the city of Burgos, often to see purely the site itself Candice Parsons is a writer and avid Spain and Spanish culture lover from Melbourne, Australia. ‘Like’ my Facebook page: www.facebook. com/pandemicrhapsody and follow me on Twitter @MiLlamoCandi

Q: DO I NEED A SPANISH WILL
A:YES...and here’s why... 1. Your estate will be left to the people of your choice and not to those determined by law 2.You can mitigate inheritance tax by planning the distribution of your estate. A will can be the single most cost-effective document you will sign during your lifetime. 3. You will have the peace of mind of knowing that things are in order for your heirs and that your heirs will not end up dealing with a complicated and costly procedure in a foreign country. I like the challenge of complicated inheritance work but we will never stop insisting that all our clients should make a Spanish will. Since setting up office in 1993, I have been surprised by the amount of people who have come to ask whether it is convenient to make a will in Spain concerning their Spanish assets. The answer to this is most definitely yes. In England if you do not make a will, then the law has rules, which will determine the distribution of your assets. These rules could mean that your assets are distributed in a way very different from what you would have liked. In Spain the situation is the same, with an additional factor. Your heirs will have to deal with a foreign language and legal system. All the more reasons to leave everything as organised as possible. Some people include their Spanish assets in their English will. This is legally binding, but to obtain probate in Spain, it will be necessary for the will to be translated and legalised. This is a long and costly procedure. My advice on the subject is to have two separate wills, one in England for your English assets and one in Spain for your Spanish assets. Drawing up a will in Spain does not take long and is not expensive, and will definitely save your heirs a lot of time, problems and money. Your Lawyer will draw up a rough draft, and then he will make an appointment at the notary to sign the final document. One copy is sent by the notary to the central register in Madrid. He will hold on to the original copy. You will be given a copy that I suggest you inform your heirs and lawyer in England about, and then put it in the bottom drawer, with the peace of mind of knowing that everything is taken care of. At Davies Solicitors we will listen to your wishes and advise you on the most tax efficient way of dealing with your Spanish estate. We will explain in detail the tax implications of your decisions for your heirs and ways to deal with it.We will prepare a will in both English and Spanish for signature and in general we will provide you the peace of mind of knowing that everything has been left organized for your heirs. Please call or email us for an appointment Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid and has offices in Mojacar and Almeria High Street.

SOLTIMES FEBRUARY 2013
Economy Minister Announces New Mortgage Measures The Minister of Economy and Competitiveness, Luis de Guindos, announced this week in Parliament a series of measures to improve the functioning of the mortgage market in Spain, and protect those particularly vulnerable as a result of the crisis. The announcement was made during the minister’s speech to defend the amendments to the bill on urgent measures to strengthen the protection of mortgage borrowers. The reforms will be presented as amendments during parliamentary proceedings of the bill and, in principle, will affect the Mortgage Law, the Law on Mortgage Market Regulation and the Civil Procedure Law, plus additional measures on financial prudence and the improvement of the Code of Good Practice which the Government launched in March 2012. These changes are intended to mitigate the effects of the crisis for those families who can not afford their mortgage due to economic circumstances
which have arisen. De Guindos stressed that “situations of default or arrears are a distinct minority in our country” and that the vast majority of the Spanish are coping with the monthly payment of their mortgage “despite the difficult economic climate we live in”. One of the goals De Guindos announced on the Government website, La Moncloa, is to balance the position of the parties involved in foreclosure proceedings. To this end, the default interest that credit institutions may demand is to be limited to three times the legal interest rate (now at 4%), “to avoid exorbitant growth of debt and enable debtors to afford to pay.” This measure will apply to the default interest accrued since the entry into force of the law and, therefore, will affect new mortgages and also those currently entering a default situation. We all want to get a good night’s sleep, so having the right bedding will help you feel comfortable and relaxed. The weight of the duvet, the support your pillow gives you and your duvet cover’s fabric all make a difference. Mattress & Pillow Protection: Mattress and pillow protectors not only provide extra comfort, they will extend the life of your bedding by providing protection from wear and tear. Mattress toppers additionally provide an added cosy extra layer along with extra support and comfort. Duvets: A duvet’s warmth is measured in togs and you’ll want a different duvet depending on the time of year: Lightweight / summer - 4.5 tog or Autumn/Winter - 10.5 and 13.5 tog. There are also ‘all season’ duvets available that combine two duvets that can be used separately or together for winter use. Fillings: Fillings are either natural or synthetic. Natural fillings are made from duck down or the superior goose down, or a combination of both. The benefit of natural fillings is that they allow your skin to breathe. Natural: Down is the soft, fluffy plumage. Each down cluster contains thousands of filaments that intertwine with each other, forming air pockets that provide natural insulation to keep cold out and warmth in. In terms of quality, goose down has bigger clusters and retains more air, and so more warmth.
Learn Spanish To Help Your Property Search
Learning the language might not be essential to finding a property in Spain but having a grasp of Spanish would certainly help you feel more in control of the whole process. Equally if you are thinking of moving to Spain, getting a headstart with learning how to deal with practicalities such as getting your utilities connected or setting up a bank account really helps. In a report by A Place In The Sun (www.aplaceinthesun.com), taking a Spain-based immersion course - that you could treat as a holiday - is a great way of learning Spanish fast and one company based around Barcelona claims to offer a unique approach. Live, Learn, Breathe Spanish invites people to stay in the homes of their Spanish teachers and take classes every day, followed by fun afternoons putting their lessons into practice. “The main selling point of our service is that potential home buyers can come on our courses to find out about the area where they are looking to buy a property, or if they have already bought a property they can get ahead in integrating into the new culture,” says Marta Puig, the company’s owner. “Or because the one-to-one tuition can be tailored to the pupil’s interest - cookery, culture, finance etc - the morning’s lessons might be tailored towards dealing with estate agents, and the afternoons spent practising such interactions.” For more fun, the morning might be spent learning cooking terms, and then the afternoons at the local market, or in the kitchen of the teacher’s house cooking supper for the family. A course with 15 hours tuition a week and full accommodation costs 853 euros and is based at a choice of homes in the Barcelona area. Courses in Catalan rather than Spanish are also available.

Synthetic: Synthetic fillings offer a more practical duvet. Unlike natural duvets that require professional cleaning, synthetic can be washed in a domestic washing machine handy if they need to be regularly cleaned. Technology nowadays means that synthetic duvets are better than ever. They give just as much warmth as feather filled duvets. Fillings will normally be made from polyester, or with polyester microfibre; microfibre is a specially light and fine polyester fibre that’s air-blown into the duvet casing for good tog and softness. It’s designed to emulate the characteristics and feel of down. They are generally a little more expensive than those made of other types of polyester but the feel of the duvet is extra soft and especially cosy. Finally, synthetic fillings are a good alternative to people who are allergic to feathers. And some are treated with antimicrobial and antibacterial chemicals to minimise allergic reactions to dust mites. Pillows: As with duvet fillings, pillows are either made with synthetic or natural fillings. But whichever you choose, it’s important to get the right firmness and support for your head. Top of the range are finest goose feather and
down pillows. There’s also hollowfibre pillows and for those with allergies, our antibacterial pillows prevent dust mites, bacteria and fungal growth. Plump up pillows regularly to maximise their support. Synthetic pillows however can be washed which is practical for everyday use too! BEDDING: Flannel bed sheets provide night-time warmth and comfort during those freezing months of winter. Made of cotton with other materials often added to give it more strength and warmth, flannel is most definitely the bed sheet of choice during cold weather. Flannel is like other fabric in that it is rated by thread count, meaning that the higher the thread count, the softer and more luxurious the sheet will be. Look for thread counts above 200 as below this the fabric can feel cool; higher thread counts in excess of 400 are a reliable indication of a luxury sheet. Look at a light through the sheet to visually determine its value as the better sheets will always be more opaque..and, of course, don’t forget a wonderful fluffy throw to keep chills at bay and add a touch of luxury too! So now that your mattress and pillows and your bed linen is all sorted, is it time for bed yet?

This week we have had our fair share of good weather, and with temperatures reaching well into the mid 20ties, in January, (which is quite remarkable in itself) , the solar panels that we installed recently, have been working to their maximum efficiency. There is also far more daylight, with the sun going down later and later each day, which should increase their productively even further. Great news, I can actually do my washing during the day without having to wait until the evening for the generator to go on! Most significantly, and

a saving we did not anticipate, was that even when we have to use the generator to clean the pools, the fuel costs have been cut by a 1/3rd. This is because the batteries are already fully charged, so the generator does not need to work as hard, resulting in less fuel being used. Result! One of the reasons why most people retire to Spain is because of the weather, and with good reason, as it is one of the European countries with the most hours of sunshine. With this in mind, in 2008, the Spanish government committed to achieving a target of 12 percent of primary energy from renewable energy by 2010 and by 2020 expects the installed solar generating capacity of 10,000 megawatts. Spain is the fourth largest manufacturer in the world of solar power technology and exports 80 percent of this output to Germany. Spain launched a major sustainable energy initiative with the introduction of Solar thermal Power Stations, the world’s first commercial concentrating solar power tower , Planta Solar 10, was built amidst the green wheat fields, oak groves and ancient olive trees of Anadlusia, Seville.
While traditional solar panels use photovoltaic cells to convert the sun’s rays directly into electricity, CSP deploys huge banks of mirrors to focus solar radiation; the intense heat (570 degrees) drives steam turbines, producing electricity in a process similar to the one used in coal-or oil-fired plants, but without the greenhouse gas emissions. At the Solúcar site, two concrete towers—one about 50 stories tall, the other 35—collect light reflected by 1,879 enormous glass mirrors, each one 33 feet high and 40 feet wide. The mirrors, called heliostats, cover some 345 acres. They face south and are turned to follow the sun as it crosses the sky. However, when it’s raining or overcast, the solar installation shuts down and bad weather can reduce or halt energy production around 80 days a year, generally between November and March. The Andasol solar power station, located near Guadix in the province of Granada, which came online in November 2008, does not have this problem, as it has a thermal storage system. The heat that is produced throughout the day is stored in a molten salt mixture and is then used to generate electricity during the night or when the sky is overcast. Although Spain is in the forefront of this type of technology the financial crisis has hit the industry hard due

to the drastic cuts in subsidies and this has affected the industry worldwide, causing a collapse in demand. This collapse although detrimental to the industry has been our gain, and has allowed us for the first time to buy the panels at a reasonable price and use then to benefit our lives, even it that means, just being able to do my washing in the day! The future of solar now hangs in the balance but undaunted the industry has turned to the Sahara desert. A consortium of 12 European businesses called Desertec Industrial Initiative, aims to supply Europe with 15% of its energy needs by 2050. The DESERTEC Concept was developed by a network of politicians, scientists and economists from around the Mediterranean, from which arose the DESERTEC Foundation, and is a non-profit organisation. It demonstrates a way to provide climate protection, energy security and development by generating sustainable power from the sites where renewable sources of energy are at their most abundant. It seems like Deserts, which were once considered to have no value, can be used to play a central role in renewable energy. A staggering fact is that within six hours deserts receive more energy from the sun than humankind consumes within a year. Even more importantly, 90 percent of the world’s population lives within 3,000 km of deserts. DESERTEC therefore, can be realized not only in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa , but also in Sub-Saharan Africa, Southern Africa, the Americas, Australia, India and in the whole of East Asia where suitable deserts are within reach of the centers of demand. Wow! Truly an ambitious project and more information on what they are about can be found on www.desertec.org. In the Australian outback, a self contained community is flourishing, providing blemish free, organic vegetables using not only solar power but sea water too. Even better it was the brain child of an by British inventor Charlie Paton, but more on that next week. So whilst we continue enjoying the sun and visitors flock to enjoy the benefits that it brings, it is fantastic to know that the energy from the sun can possibly provide the solution to the dilemma´s that the world faces in the future. Even better still, you can use your energy and come and either walk or cycle around the beautiful La Pedrera Reservoir, on March 3rd in aid of HAH and Elche Children´s Home. It is our 5th anniversary of hosting the walk and if you have not walked in a while and would like to get to know the terrain, I am holding training days each Monday at 10.30am for those who are reasonably fit and again at 2pm for those less able. ...HOME & GARDEN
PAINT YOUR GARDEN! Paint can look wonderful when used cleverly and in context, creating a different mood and feel in your garden. It’s not a new thing; the Romans loved their frescoes, and trompe l’oeil has been executed umpteen times to full trickery effect since the Ancient Greeks. The contrasting and colourful work by the late Mexican architect Luis Barragán showed precisely what vibrant colours can do for architecture and the landscape. Barragán painted entire walls with single primary colours, often contrasting with walls of brash pinks, oranges and purples. It’s his work that seems the most relevant and achievable in our own backyards today. Painted backdrops such as walls will intensify the hues of the plants in front, especially mid and dark greens, but of
Painted backdrops such as walls intensify the hues of the plants and colour of flowers growing in front - so bite the bullet and go for it.
course will also set off flower colours too, opening up a wider range of combinations, whether subtle or madly zingy. Flat planes of colour can look wonderful when cast in shadow by strong sunlight. Sharp, clean shadows of nearby structures will add drama and definition, while the dancing shadows of textural leaves from cleverly placed plants add a life and movement to the space. Walls of concrete or breeze block rendered and painted are cheap to build and the smoother flat or slightly textured finish opens up the opportunity to paint, introduce permanent colour and create a more contemporary feel. But be careful not to commit the sin of covering a lovely old character wall! Wooden fences can easily be stained, too. Far easier to reapply than paint, stain soaks in and therefore doesn’t need loads of sanding and preparation. Garden furniture can also be painted for a revamp and even old stone, wood or terracotta pots can be washed over with a masonry paint to tie them all in together. The most important factor is choosing the right colour or combination and using them boldly. Here in Spain, primary colours are eye-catching and the light is powerful enough to set them off properly. Wine reds and deep yellow ochres can look warm and stunning.

Cooler colours such as light and deep blues and purples are particularly effective in summer sunshine. However, before going the whole hog and slapping it on, just get yourself a few samples of paint and some old bits of board to play around with. Make sure it dries properly because the hue will change when dry. Then bite the bullet and go for it! The great thing about using paint is that, over time, if you want a new look or get bored with the colour you can just stick a different one over the top!

Humble layered sponge cake crowned nation’s favourite tea time treat ‘I imagine our top five will be the same for decades to come. Baking trends, like cupcakes and muffins come and go, but these five are here to stay. ‘I agree with our visitors, as my favourite cake is the Victoria sponge too. It’s light, fruity, and quintessentially British. ‘Chocolate sponge is an obvious choice for second place, as for so many people, it’s the ultimate sweet treat.
NEW The humble Victoria sponge has been crowned the nation’s favourite tea time treat by the National Trust. The organisation, famous for its tea shops, announced that it sold more than 171,000 slices of the classic sponge cake in 2012. It sold more than 50 per cent more than its closest rival - the chocolate sponge - which sold a total of 108,000 slices, according to the survey published in the National Trust magazine. Crunchy coffee and walnut cake came in
third favourite, with hungry visitors eating 102,000 slices each year - closely followed by spicy carrot cake, which was eaten by 96,000 people. In fifth place, tangy lemon drizzle cake is a relatively new entry to the trust’s cake charts - but it still sold an impressive 52,000 slices across their 100 tea rooms. Clive Goudercourt, National Trust Development Chef, who is responsible for developing recipes and menus, said: ‘Cakes are the Trust’s biggest sellers.

‘We are in a unique position with our carrot cake, in that we can grow or source produce from our own land to use in our tea rooms. a sweet treat but can also claim to be good for you. They are made using dark chocolate which is rich in polyphenols, proven to combat heart disease and lower blood pressure. Thanks to Carey’s ingredients, they are also high in omegas three, six and nine (so high in fact that the omegas outweigh the total fat content) and per 100g contain more than 15 per cent of your RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) of zinc and magnesium. The truffles also contain a low GI sweetener, essential fats, Vitamin C and boost a high anti-oxidant value. Carey, 45, from Sussex, told the MailOnline, how the super nutritious truffles came about. ‘The truffles were a home kitchen invention developed from scratch by myself as a mother trying to find a healthier alternative to sweets and the chocolate on the market for my children,’ she said. But while Carey was initially inspired by her children aged 10, eight and six, she said the chocolates are also for adults who want to ‘indulge without the guilt’. She explained: ‘The chocolates were created just as much for adults as children and are about indulgence without the guilt. It’s not about dieting, calorie counting or self-denial. I wanted to create a heavenly food that is primarily tasty, mouth-watering and totally delicious, while at the same time providing maximum nourishment. ‘Sugars are minimised and replaced, and dairy, artificial flavours and preservatives are nowhere to be found.’ Carey said she has always had a love of experimenting with different ingredients and recipes but when she

However, after having children, she took a home study nutrition course from the Institute of Nutrition and began to run a business on holistic health for children. Then one Easter, her idea for a healthier alternative to chocolate was born and she began experimenting with different ingredients including carob, lucuma, maca, sunflower seeds, ginseng and almonds. She eventually found a winning recipe, that has subsequently undergone a nutritional analysis to prove her health claims, and began sharing the truffles with friends and family to see what they thought. They were an instant hit and as word of mouth spread, Carey began to get so many orders she broke two blenders trying to fulfill them. It was then that she approached a manufacturer, Montezuma, about getting the truffles to a wider market and after working hard to develop the look and feel of the truffles, they are now on sale at wholesalers including Garsons and Infinity Foods. The truffles come in four flavours - orange, lime, almond and vanilla - and as Carey hopes to extend their reach into further stores, she also hopes to branch into creating further products like chocolate bars. Cucumber, Yogurt & Smoked Salmon Verrine

Grate the cucumber and place it in a bowl. Sprinkle with salt and let rest on the side for 30 minutes. Cut the apple in small sticks and drizzle with lime juice to prevent oxidation. Transfer to a bowl. Press on the cucumber with the tip of your fingers to squeeze out the excess water. Combine with the apple and radish sticks. Add the fresh herbs, 1 tablespoon yogurt and the olive oil. No need to add more salt as the cucumber is already seasoned. Divide between four glasses. Top with 2 tablespoons of yogurt in each glass and finish with the diced smoked salmon. Drizzle with olive oil and top with cracked red peppercorns. Serve with more lime juice to taste. Accompany with bread sticks.
Ingredients:
1 cucumber, peeled and seeded Salt Lime juice 1 tablespoon olive oil + more to drizzle 1/2 apple (green or pink lady) 4 pink radishes, cut in small sticks 1 tbsp + 6 tbsp plain creamlike yogurt 1 tbsp chopped fresh mint 1 tbsp chopped dill 4 slices of smoked salmon, diced (try to choose a mild one, not too salty) Cracked red peppercorns
Ricotta & Ham Stuffed Aubergine
Method Set the oven at 400F/200C/Gas 6. Have on hand a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Halve the aubergine lengthwise. Place them in the baking dish, cut sides up. Sprinkle generously with oil and salt. Bake for 20 minutes. Leave to cool. With a teaspoon, scoop out the aubergine flesh. Chop it coarsely; transfer to a bowl.
Ingredients: 2 medium aubergines Olive oil (for sprinkling) Salt & pepper, to taste 2tbsp olive oil 1 shallot, finely sliced 1tsp ground coriander 3 sprigs of fresh thyme 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 2 medium ripe tomatoes, coarsely chopped 1 bay leaf
In a skillet, heat the 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium heat. When it is hot, add the shallot, coriander, and thyme. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, for 3 minutes. Add the garlic and continue to cook for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring often, for 4 minutes. Stir in the aubergine flesh. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, for 7 minutes or until the mixture is pulpy and well flavoured. Discard the bay leaf and thyme.
1 cup whole milk ricotta 1/3 cup finely grated pecorino cheese 1 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 2 slices/1/4 lb ham, finely diced 1 egg Âź cup water Extra coriander, chopped for sprinkling
Leave to cool slightly. Lower the oven temperature to 375 degrees. Stir the ricotta, pecorino, coriander, ham, egg, salt, and pepper into the aubergine mixture. Fill the aubergine shells with the stuffing. Return the shells to the baking dish. Sprinkle with olive oil and add the water to the dish. Bake the aubergine for 45 minutes or until the shells are tender when pierced with a skewer.
Gingered-flavoured Tartlets
Method
In a bowl, combine the flours, and sugar and salt. Add the butter and make crumbles with the tips of your fingers. Add the egg and work the dough until it just forms a ball. Add more white rice flour if necessary. Divide in 4 smaller balls and place in the fridge for 1 hour, covered. Roll the dough and garnish buttered moulds. Make small holes in the dough with a fork and place the tartlets in the fridge for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven at 400F/. In a smaller bowl, combine the almond meal, sugar, vanilla seeds and ginger. Divide ž of the sugar mixture between the tartlets. Arrange the figs on top and top with the rest of the sugar. Add a few pieces of butter on the fruit and bake the tartlets for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool before unmoulding and enjoying!

TEST DRIVE citroen ds3 specification New price range: £14,850 - £20,950 Citroën DS3 (10 on) 0-60mph: 7.1secs Top speed: 130mph Power: 155bhp Economy: 47mpg Fuel tank: 48 litres Watch the video at: www.testdrives.biz
Style, practicality and speed. Those are the three key qualities of the Citroen DS3 Ultra Prestige that I am testing this week. The moment I clap eyes on the sleek white hatch with blacked out rear windows and detailed alloys, I know that we’re going to get on well. I can relate to the DS3 because Citroen has taken the hatchback and added its own unique angle, much in the same way that I try to with my writing. No matter what you do in life, if you can stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons you’ll do well and that’s what Citroen specialises in. The French manufacturer, so my wife, an experienced graphic designer and artist tells me, has taken the DS letters and created a unique logo, splashing it liberally throughout the vehicle. This distinctive emblem can be found in black across the roof while a chrome version can be found on the boot and bonnet. It is also used on the dashboard. Externally the DS3 is a very appealing package and this is maintained inside. It’s only available as a threedoor, which is just as well as it would lose its charm if two extra ones were added. This range topping model has a choice of two engines: a 1.6-litre petrol
or a diesel. There’s a stark difference in performance and economy figures for the pair. The petrol will hit 60mph from standstill in about seven seconds and has a top speed of 130mph. It will return 47mpg; so does the 1.4litre VW Polo but that takes over four seconds longer to travel from 0-60mph. Diesel drivers are always most interested in economy so the 74mpg is sure to please them while the 9.4secs 0 to 60mph and 118mph top speed is more than adequate. As I slide into the superb leather seat that cossets in all the right places, the first thing that catches the eye is the two-tone black and cream leather dashboard. This is mirrored on the seats. The designers have really gone to town on the DS3 and the driver certainly feels they are driving a prestigious vehicle as the name suggests. There’s a traditional handbrake rather than any of this modern electric nonsense and a very good six-speed manual gearbox. This is a proper driver’s car with some room in the rear, large enough at any rate to fit daughter Harriett in her cumbersome baby seat; although it is a bit of a struggle to get it into the rear due to the front seat not going far enough forward. For a car of this size more should be made of the room inside. When there are rear passengers those in the front have to have their seats so far forward that it is uncomfortable. The boot is only as large as my Fiesta’s while there is less room in the back for rear passengers. An annoying rattle develops during the course of the
test, which my wife reckons comes from the stereo. But it’s loaded with goodies including cruise control. This is operated by a fixed stalk on the left of the steering wheel, which is a good idea so that it can be easily operated no matter how much the wheel is turned. This function is useful on a long motorway jaunt and it is reasonably reliable when travelling uphill maintaining speed within a few mph. But when travelling downhill it does not hold the set speed; a hindrance in a residential area with speed cameras. Other luxuries include air conditioning, electric windows and a good quality stereo. The black wing mirrors, which contrast beautifully against the white bodywork, automatically fold when the car’s locked as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. Its boot is large enough to fit the shopping or a briefcase and laptop bag. Twice I hit my head twice on the black parcel shelf, which merges into the black of the cold winter’s night. It seems to be just at the right spot to catch me as I bend down to grab my bags from the boot. Parkers, the car experts, write: “The Citroen DS3 is the first in a range of very different Citroen models that put the emphasis on style and personality, along with strong performance and driver appeal. Indeed, it has a lot going for it in the looks department: the sharkfinshaped mid-pillar isn’t traditional – you might even call it quirky – and the overall shape is much slicker than the more sedate C3 on which it is based. The ‘DS’ badge reflects Citroen’s glory days when it built armadillo-shaped super saloons with hydro-pneumatic suspension that wafted and wallowed with a sense of occasion that no other manufacturer could match. With its stylish looks and compact size, it’s easy to see why so many comparisons have been drawn with the popular Mini and Fiat 500.” Verdict: An excellent driver’s car and those with short friends will have no complaints, especially if they have no need to get anything from the boot! Nissan to build Golf rival in Spain Nissan will invest €130m in its Barcelona plant to build its new Golf rival
Nissan has announced that it will build its new Csegment rival to the Volkswagen Golf at its plant in Barcelona, Spain. The new car, which is due to begin production in July 2014, was to be built at Nissan’s Sunderland factory. However, Nissan has invested £250million in the Sunderland facility to build a new Infiniti small car from 2015 instead. The Barcelona factory currently produces commercial vehicles like the NV200 in both conventional and eNV200 electric powered forms, and the Pathfinder SUV and Navara pick-up models. The new passenger car will add 80,000 extra units of annual capacity to the plant, taking total production at
the Barcelona factory to more than 200,000 vehicles. It represents a €110million investment and Nissan claims that 1,000 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs will be created. As well as its new Golf rival, Nissan will add 24,000 units of additional annual capacity for building the Navara, which represents an additional €14million investment. The plant will also be responsible for building the gearbox for the Nissan Leaf and eNV200, which represents a further €6million investment. The total investment of €130million will be used to renovate and modernise the Barcelona plant’s production lines in readiness for the start of the new
passenger car and electric gearbox production. However, while Nissan has announced where its new Golf and Ford Focus rival will be built, it stopped short of confirming the new car’s name. Nissan’s executive vice president of product planning, Andy Palmer, told Auto Express: “There is a gap in our range and the idea of the new car is to keep our customers within the brand. “This will catch buyers moving up from a Juke, who can then buy a Qashqai if they need more space. Eventually, the idea is to get them into an Infiniti.” “The name is yet to be revealed, but Palmer dropped a series of hints. “It won’t use the Almera name, you can be sure of that,” he said. “But it will be familiar.”

APAH Charity Shop
3 CHANCES TO WIN!!!
Every week 2 lucky couples can win a fabulous, 3 course meal, from our Winter Specials Board menu, with a bottle of wine … and … 1 couple can win a delicious, 9 item English breakfast, including tea or coffee (between 9.30am – 5pm)
Thanks to the generosity of many people, the APAH Charity Shop in San Miguel de Salinas has a large amount of good quality Winter clothing; some of it brand new, with original price tags still attached, that it needs to sell in order to raise much needed funds to maintain its work of rescuing and caring for dogs and cats abandoned on the Costa Blanca. Throughout February, there will be a 3 for 2 sale on Winter clothing, with the lowest priced item for free. Go along and visit the shop to pick up your Winter bargains. The shop is located on Calle San Miguel, which is an extension of the main street through San Miguel. At the top of the town, there is a pedestrian area (next to Bargain Books) and the APAH Charity Shop is located on the other side of the pedestrian area. The shop is open from Monday to Saturday, between 10am and 2pm.

Disabled piglet gets a toy wheelchair
A disabled pet piglet called Chris P Bacon - with his own ‘toy’ wheelchair - looks set to become a star on the internet. The pig has his own Facebook page and has already attracted more than 1,000 followers. And fans of the little piglet are following his progress on YouTube where clips have notched up thousands more hits. Owner Len Lucero says Chris P Bacon was born with a congenital defect which means he has no use of his hind limbs. He has made him a two-wheeled harness out of a children’s K’Nex building set which he is using to get around. Mr Lucero says the Walkin’ Wheels organisation which helps disabled pets has kindly donated him a “cool wheelchair”. But he added: “Chris weighs 2lbs so he is too small now but should grow into it before long. For now we’ll have to stick with K’Nex.”

Thursday, 31 January 2013 – LAS COLINAS Alfie’s Golf Society headed for Las Colinas on the last day of January for their first meeting of 2013 in weather that was more spring-like, than the middle of winter. The course was in its usual excellent condition, well defined fairways, slick greens, but some tough pin positions made scoring difficult for all 28 players. Before presenting the day’s
Tony Hall, presented late trophies to two people who were unable to attend the end of year Champion’s Dinner in December. Joe Murphy received 3 prizes – longest drive and 2nd place from December’s meeting at La Finca, and Joe also ended the year in 3rd place Champion Golfer of the Year. Phil Lancaster was awarded the Most Improved Golfer of 2012.
This week we played a stableford competition at Bonalba and what a difference in the weather after last week’s freeze this week a lot of the players were back in shorts for the first time this year. The course was in pretty good condition with the greens a little slow to what we have been used to just lately but considering the problems the course has suffered just lately the green staff have done an excellent job in getting this beautiful course back to itself. Nearest the pin winners today were Brian Mulligan, Ben Price, Derek Johnston and Ken Flaherty. Third in
Silver Category was Brian Mulligan (33), Second Keith Stevenson(35) and First once again was Mr. Consistency Ray Ewins (37) just shows what a lesson every couple of week’s does for you. In Gold Category Third was Ben Price(32) Second on count back Paul Guest (32), and First was Ken Flaherty(34). The winner of the Abacus this week was Jacqui Rust(apparently she was overheard to say that she is taking knitting back up again). Next week we are at Villamartin(6/2) followed by Las Ramblas(13/2) and then on to Las Colinas(20/2)
so if you want a game on any Wednesday book in on the website www.smgs. org or give Barry a ring on 966731033 and you will be made very welcome. Pictures of some of today’s winners.
Wednesday 30th January at Roda - What a wonderful day for golf no wind or rain just brilliant sunshine all the way, did it improve the golf? For some yes for others like myself disaster but hey ho such is the game of golf, Roda Golf Course was in very good condition the greens especially they had been hollow tined recently but they were still very good for putting as they were quite slick at times, so well done to the greens staff. Bill Acton had a few problems remembering his clubs when leaving the green, on the first hole we picked up two of his clubs luckily for him we were the following group, Bill Ross apparently was playing the par 5,s like a pro out there
today until it came to the one where he could win a prize this he cocked up wholesale. John Dunnion on Hole 5 landed 3ft from the pin and proceeded to miss the putt 4 times, Hole 3 a long par 5 with a gully before the green was my biggest downfall, I played 3 good shots to just before the gully, my next shot should have been on the green but I hit the top edge of the boulders round the gully, my ball sailed over my head and backwards by about 100 ft and out of bounds. Results: Gold Div Winner Vic Dew 34pts 2nd Rod Day 31pts 3rd Alan Briggs 30pts Nearest the Pin in 3 shots Hole 10 Rod Day

Orihuela Costa F.C. 4 V’s 2 Bigastro C.F.
Sponsored By : Morgans Bar - Amber Pools - Sunworld Properties - The Shandon Bells - The Central Grille Blue Hill Security Grilles Specsavers Torrevieja - Morgans On The Plaza The Cheers Bar - La Florida Clinica. Costa finally got back to league football this week after high winds had meant no league games. With a new look to Costa’s defence and the chance to see Bass partnering Gudmundsson in attack for the first time it was a real chance for the home side to compete and to challenge the opposition. On the pitch in front of the biggest crowd of the season Costa got off to a great start with Gummi Gudmundsson finishing from great link up with his new partner Patrick Bass to put the home side 1 - 0 up. The confidence was flowing through out the side and some of the passing and movement from Costa gave the visitors a torrid time. Against the run of play Costa conceded a corner which wasn’t dealt with and Bigastro with their height advantage snatch an equalizer on 15 mins. Costa replied straight away with some great work down Costa’s left wing from Georgie Mint who supplied a great ball into Bigastro’s penalty area which saw the ball land to Ciaran Sullivan to smash into the back of the net to score his first goal at Cadete level despite being an Infantil player. 2 - 1 to Costa and it was to get even better before half time when Gummi
scored Costa’s third goal after some slick passing from his team mates. Bigastro though got their second to leave the score 3 - 2 at half time. Second half costa had to thank their goal keeper Jordan Marshall for a fine double save to keep the score 3 - 2 . But with the introduction of Luke Deegan for the injured Georgie Mint saw Deegan chase a loose ball down on the edge of the visitors box and with great strength and a cool finish give Costa a 4 - 2 advantage. Unfortunately the visitors seem to lose their discipline and temper and this resulted in a red card for one of their defenders for shirt pulling in the box. This led to more trouble two minutes later when from a strong but fair challenge from Callum Gildea saw several visiting players throwing punches and kicking the Costa players. Unfortunately the visiting manager was quite happy to allow this thinking the game may be abandoned and a possible replay but the referee for once in this league stood firm and sent off three bigastro players and when their manager told one of his players to go down injured this meant the game had to be stopped , but with Costa being awarded the victory. Orihuela Costa F.C. 3 V’s 5 Los Montesinos C.F. Mid week saw Costa entertain their local rivals under the flood lights. After a confidence boosting result from Saturday Costa started brightly and on 6 minutes Bass put the home side 1 - 0 up with his strong and lighting pace that the visitors couldn’t handle. On 12 minutes the visitors struck back from a free kick which went over the stranded Marshall in goal. Two minutes later Costa took the lead once again from Bass who was simply unplayable at times and kept breaking open the visitors defence to give Costa a 2 - 1 lead. Costa looked comfatable on the ball and looked well on their way to pull away out of sight
with the continued attacks on the visitors goal. Then came 90 seconds that turned the game on its head. On 32 mins a lack of effort on the out side of Costa’s area saw a cheap cross enter the penalty area and resulted in a goal for the visitors. Then seconds later a long ball from the visitors keeper took out the whole of costa’s midfield and allowed the pace of the montesinos attack to out run costa’s defence and allow a cool finish past Marshall in goal. 2 - 3 down at half time against the run of play Costa had it al to do in the second half. Second half saw the visitors grow in confidence and start to play some good counter attacking football and from this they capitalized from a corner on 50 mins to take a 4 - 2 lead. Costa showed a great attitude and wouldn’t roll over and this was shown with great displays from Cesar Augusto, Jordan Marshall, Callum Gildea, Aidan Sullivan and Liam Nicholas at the back and with Patrick Bass up front continually causing problems up front the game was far from over. Costa set up a tense finish on 63 minutes when great work from substitute Jamie Cockroft provided Bass a great ball for the striker to grab his hatrick and bring the score to 3 - 4. Costa kept plugging away and kept the visitors keeper busy. In the final minute though the game was over for Costa who let in a 5th goal from a free kick to leave the score 5 - 3 to the visitors. CD Montesinos A welcome, and more keeper to put the visitors 0-2 importantly, a deserved away win 1-2 for the Full Monte. The game was dictated by a strong wind the full length of the pitch, so a classic “game of two halves”, with CDM adapting to it better than Callosa in both halves - in fact, the new look side (a blend of established and junior players) dominated the first half with the wind. Andreas took a hit and went off after just 5 minutes, but Edu put CDM in front not long after with a quick breakaway goal and the away side then dominated in midfield - full marks to the youngsters, they showed a great appetite for a battle and won most of the tussles. Pushed deep, Callosa conceded a sequence of three free kicks, the third one was goal-bound but hit their centre-half and unsighted his
at half time. M&A featured a lot in the second half, holding the ball up and taking it wide, it was encouraging to see the ball played to feet, into the wind, it was the right tactic and created more clear chances than the home side at the other end, in fact they were a little fortunate to prod home a goal mouth scramble with 15 minutes to go. But despite some five youngsters now on, CDM didn’t panic and continued to counter-attack dangerously, Edu probably should have netted again, which wouldn’t have been unjust - a very encouraging development ahead of playing the league leaders next week. Enjoyed it...........Jacarilla Jim.

Cornish Pride Los Dolses TEN PIN BOWLING LEAGUE ITV ORIHUELA RFC
A HARD WEEKEND FOR ITV ORIHUELA RFC At the weekend ITV Orihuela RFC went away to play the league leaders, UCAM, and are not at the top for nothing. After recent results Orihuela went there with confidence that they with a bit of luck get something out of the game. After last weekends bruising encounter against Murcia XV they went with a number of key regular first players missing through injury, The game started off with nobody giving any quarter and both defences holding firm. First to strike was Orihuela with our new kicker Jose getting a penalty after infringements at the ruck. UCAM got a penalty of their own and after ITV Orihuela took the lead again and exchanges of penalties leading up to half time Orihuela were only 3 points adrift, but at the end of the half UCAM got their first try of the game to go in at half time 16-6 up. Orihuela could easily have got a couple of their own, but some excellent defensive work by both teams kept the score down. The second half start off well with another score for the away side and a try by the home side stretched their lead, but again Orihuela fought back bringing the score to within touching distance 23-12, but just was not to be after the weeks before game beginning to take it’s toll on the players and slowly ran out of steam and eventually deservedly ran out 47-12 winners, even thou the score did flatter UCAM a bit. They were worthy winners and wish them good luck for the rest of the season. Congratulations to Jose our new kicker getting 4 out of 5 in his first game as kicker, he started practicing
onThursday. ITV Orihuela RFC’s next game is at home in 2 weeks time, 16 February, against Albacete, and are looking at getting the double over them and back to winning ways. This coming weekend we will be televising all of the live the 6 Nations and league matches at the rugby bar in Rojales, The Steakhouse, used to be Tylers Bar. Starting on Friday with Ulster v Ospreys at 20.00, on Saturday, Saints v Gloucester at 13.30, then Scotland v Italy at 15.30, followed by France v Wales, and at 16.00 on Sunday Ireland v England. Looking forward to seeing another excellent turn out down there this weekend for the 6 Nations. I am down at the Moncayo Market on Saturday, with all the rugby branded clothing, so come down and get all your shirts for the rest of the 6 Nations games after a great start this weekend with wins for Ireland, England and Italy. Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. If you would like more information about what is going on in the club, you can contact the club by phoning myself, Garry on 692 767 242, and for the juniors contact Oscar on 600 871 606 (Spanish)

Sporting history was made in Torrevieja this week. At the Ozone bowling alley a bowler bowling in the Tuesday trios ten pin bowling league managed to do what bowlers, including members of the Spanish national team, and even professional bowlers that have played on the American P.B.A. tour have been trying to do since 2001 when the bowling alley opened. He bowled the ‘perfect game’ of 12 strikes in a row giving him the maximum score of 300. That bowler was OLLI LEPPANEN, who was playing for his Tuesday night team, Team Finland.
It was not until the tenth frame of his second game, that the other bowlers in the league, realised that Olli had another chance at the magic 300, (he came close a couple of weeks ago), then his tenth and eleventh balls were both strikes, and the whole bowling alley stopped to watch his twelfth ball. A massive cheer went up as it hit the ‘pocket’ and knocked all ten pins over, Olli had bowled the perfect game. A big congratulation to Olli Leppanen from the league sponsors, Cornish Pride, and all the Torrevieja bowlers.
BY STEVE HIBBERD The week started in fine fashion, with Greenlands BC recording an excellent victory over La Marina in the Premier 20 cup. At home, young Sheila Stead won her singles match, whilst the trips combo of Penny Tomkins, Mike Veale & Steve Cantley triumphed handsomely. Over at La Marina, Lynn Greenland also won her singles by 7 shots, with the rinks team of Steve Hibberd, Bill Sims, Sandra Heath & Barry Latham just coming out on top. This made it 4 wins apiece, but the team in green just edged out yellow peril by 8 shots, to reach the semi finals, where they will play San Luis. Elkie Brooks may have sung about ‘Lilac wine’, but there’s nothing like a drop of ‘Maple’ syrup to tickle ones fancy! At home to Emerald Isles Titans, this group of ‘smoothies’ helped to secure a useful 10-4 victory: S Stead, F & M Edwards 2514. M Mackay, D & M Fryatt 19-8. J Pocock, M Brown, B Pocock 22-9. S Hibberd, S Heath, D O’Sullivan 19-18. Also in the top SABA div, our Sycamores had a toughie at San Miguel against their Meteors. Although they lost 10-4, narrow victories were achieved by the teams of Z
Wilcock, M Lockley, B Miller 12-11, and M Beardsall, M Kilby, J Wilcock 21-19. Playing against some top class bowlers, Chestnuts found San Luis Trekkers in awesome form. Only the rink of D Watt, L Morris & P Heyes 16-16, prevented the visitors completing a whitewash. A long trip to Benitichell awaited the Winter/Berleen leaguers. Solid victories for Bill Sims, W Latham, L Greenland, B Latham 17-12, & Bobbie Sims, P Goodfellow, S Heath & A Goodfellow 18-14, gave the WL side 4 points, but unfortunately an inferior shots difference of 11, prevented any bonus points. Before play, the Berleeners sat in 2nd place, only a point behind the leaders, so another victory by 2 shots keeps them right up there. J Collins, D Watts, T Sambrook & G Watts won by 6 shots, and although the other rink lost by 4, the 2 points were theirs. Both Bulls & Bears fed 4s teams, found themselves at San Luis in glorious sunshine, last Thurs afternoon. That’s where the good news ends, as both of them had a bad day at the office - shall we just leave it at that!!

TMGS Hacienda Del Alamo 30th January, 2013.
Well, what can one say when you’ve just played on a course that is in absolutely top notch condition, was eerily quiet and only about another half dozen golfers on the course at the same time as us. Those that decided that it is just too far – it’s an hour from Villamartin/ Cabo Roig (unless the vicecaptain is driving and he must have forgotten that we now have cars with 5 gears, unlike when he passed his test where they still had the man walking and waving the red flag in front) and to be very honest, that hour is so very worth the time to play the dogs wotsits of golf courses of Hacienda del Alamo; especially in bright sunshine; hardly a breath of wind and with greens that were as tricky as a Scouser selling second hand cars (no offence to scousers, poetic licence you know). Of the 4 NTP’s only two were recorded and it’s hardly surprising really when the SHORTEST Par 3 is some 180 meters long, however Secretary Alan Rixson and Captain Alan Rickers managed, somehow,
to find the greens of 12 and 8 respectively. The other two remained virgins and laughed at the sad and sorry attempts to breach them. The scores on the day do reflect the severity and length of the course, currently believed to be the longest in Spain and to give you an idea; it is 507 meters LONGER than Villamartin and 343 meters longer than La Finca; it is that long and it’s hardly surprising that a score of 31 points by Vice-captain Mick Kennedy was enough to win the Gold division and Steve Higgins only needed 27 points to take the runner up spot. The Silver Division didn’t fare any better and Bill Wylie took that Division with 28 points and beating buggy partner, Sandra Twentyman who claimed runner up spot with 26 points on countback. Phot: Vice Captain Mick Kennedy and Steve “Elvis” Higgins (in drag) Our next game, Wednesday 6th February 2013, see’s us at the Seve designed Alicante Golf course, so if you fancy a game just look and book a place at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604. In addition to Wednesdays, we still have room to accommodate players on our Friendly Friday games at Villamartin.

C.F Sporting de San Fulgencio Battling Saints well beaten by leaders C.D Cox 4-1 C.F Sporting de San Fulgencio After what was a rather quiet first half barring Cox’s opening goal, the game burst into life in the second, especially for the hosts who look like favourites for the title. Apart from a few half chances, the best opportunity fell to Jose Bonmati for the Saints, but thinking he was in an anti reglamentary positon, the tall midfielder scuffed his effort when through on goal. The breakthrough arrived 5 minutes from before the interval. A clever corner was rifled in from all of 25 yars through a group of San Ful players to open the scoring. There was an instant response from Marco Aurelio, but his half volley was palmed over by the streching Cox keeper. The home side then ran straight up the field and saw a curling shot hit the outside of the post! Cox doubled their lead just after the restart in very controversial circumstances as the striker finished clincally, but the referee failed to spot the crystal clear offside position. The Saints then began to search for a way back into the game and they came so close on a couple of occasions. Firstly, Gary Williams headed over from

This weeks exciting and cannot wait to fish match, was again held on the Embalse de Pedrera. The competition was the 9th round of the winter championship. The weather on the day was glorious with temperatures up in the mid 20´s. However, this was not reflected in the fishing, in the weights or the amount of fish caught. With the times that we have fished this stretch and the bait put in, it should be fishing better, but there you go the vagrities of fishing. The problem is with so few fish that concentration must be kept full on all day as that one bite will probably be your only one!!!. Top Rods on the day 1st Dave ( The Sweetie man ) Hutchinson fishing the feeder and using tares with 6.26 kilo´s. 2nd Dave ( Yours Truly ) Hoare fishing the feeder using maggot with 4.66 kilo´s 3rd Mick ( The Arsenal ) Hill fishing the feeder using tares with 4.32 kilo´s. At least this week the catch average has improved with 7 anglers catching to 6 blanks. a few yards out and then Marco saw his rocket smash off the underside of the bar. Eventually the visitors halved the deficit. Fernando Mora’s cross was headed goalward and Gary was there to flick the ball in past the scrambling keeper, who had collided with his centreback trying to clear the danger. The leaders then rallied and were denied by a brilliant Jose Navarro save then a vital last ditch block by full-back, Alex Hall. The pressure paid off and Cox had their third goal with 25 minutes remaining. A deep cross for the right wing was acrobatically volleyed into the bottom corner as San Ful’s defence stood and watched. The game becamse more open and the Saint’s defence was exploited again. A flowing move culminated in the finishing goal, although Jose Navarro will be disappointed to have been beaten at his near post. Cox’s left back won’t be complaining. It seems like San Fulgencio are starting to lose ground on the leading pack, but there are still plenty of games left to play! Our next game is at home against Bigastro on the 12th at 12:00. Thank you to Telecom 900 and the rest of our sponsrs. Match report by Jordan Lucas
Supplied by Terry Screen This weeks 4th round of the Abbey Angling Cup was fished at Nancy’s on the 29th January. We are still having good turn outs at the matches despite the time of the Year, the sooner the better for the weather to start to warm up so we have no more dry nets, this week there were four anglers who blanked. There is plenty of water coming in from the channels, but the level is still about a foot below the normal. 1st Terry (Swing em) Screen with 8.440kg fishing the feeder using maggot 2nd Bill (The Master) Reade with 7.000kg fishing the pole using paste 3rd Andy (The web man) Stevenson with 6.100kg fishing the feeder using maggot Our next Club meeting is at the Abbey Tavern on the 12th February at 7.30pm.All details are available on our web site www.abbeyangling.com or from the match secretary Terry Screen on 965 328 368 ANGLERS TOGETHER The objective of Anglers Together was to introduce anglers to each other, who otherwise had no one to fish with or didn’t know where to fish. It was successful in bringing together many anglers who established friendships and which continue to this day. Today’s game was a team game i.e. a 2 Ball Better Ball at our home course of La Marquesa on Thursday 31 January 2013. 64 members took part in this competition on what would be considered a lovely summer’s day in the UK. It seemed to be a day of blame your partner as several people were heard to tell how well they played but their partner was cr***. Well they always are. It is never the players fault is it? I am lead to believe that our Captain had a bit of faux pa on the 16th tee when his drive narrowly missed his wife, fortunately the acting Match Secretary pulled her out of the way and now has the imprint of a Titleist 4 on his arm, impeding his game considerably for the rest of the round. The Captain forgot to shout ‘four’ at the time but apparently his next shot the green was a cracker (after hitting several trees on the way). (Watch out Phyllis, he aimed for you ) Well done to Cindi and Stan who outclassed the rest of the field with a magnificent 52 points. The team results are as follows: 1st Stan Low & Cindi Green 52

AT CREVILLENTE 1 V. DAYA NUEVA 3 INFANTILS G10s A POOR DAYA SIDE WIN A BAD TEMPERED GAME With a gail force wind behind them Daya soon had the home side pegged back in their own half. For all this possession though the visitors just couldn’t make it count. Then on 12 minutes Manuel collected the ball just inside his own half, went past two or three Crevillente defenders to open the scoring for Daya. The wind was preventing any controlled football being played by either team but Daya were just about the better side. On 25 minutes Francisco broke out of defence and took the ball all the way

into the home side’s penalty area where he was upended. Up stepped Jesus to smack the penalty home for 2 - 0 Daya. Just three minutes later the home side had their own penalty which was duly despatched to halve the visitors’ lead. Daya went in at the break 2 - 1 up and were just about worth their lead. There was going to be a lot of defending for the visitors to do in the second half as they would be battling into the wind. Daya started the second half brightly and seemed to be better playing into the wind. As the half wore on the visitors became more dominant but couldn’t just score the goal that would surely seal victory for them. It was becoming a
bad tempered game with the referee issuing three yellow cards and in danger of losing control of the match. With just a few minutes remaining the ever reliant Carlos eased the visitors’ worries with a well taken goal for 3 - 1. So another win keeps alive Daya’s title hopes but they certainly made hard work of it. The wind did not help, although the visitors did play better into the wind than the home side. Crevillente resorted to some unsporting tactics that the referee was tricked in to, I thought he had a very poor match. Man of the Match for Daya (from a very poor display all round) was Francisco. up to the Alcoy area to take on Muro. Muro were level on points with Torry but were in a bad run of form having lost their last 3 games. Torry have themselves been slipping down the table and needed a win or at least a draw to arrest the slump. Torry have recruited 3 experienced players in the transfer window, central defender JuanFran, left back Dani Meseguer and attacking wideman Villanueva. Hopefully the latter, in particular will produce having played not only in Spain but in Dubai and Cyprus and a couple of years ago for Orihuela CF. Torry certainly needed reinforcements to bolster the depleted squad and it is a pity that they couldn’t find a ballplayer to occupy central midfield, the area in which they have been lacking all season. For the game against Muro they were without the injured captain and central defender Jorge, and the suspended duo, central midfielder Burguillos and forward Koeman. New arrivals JuanFran and Dani Meseguer were included in the starting eleven but Villanueva couldn’t make his debut because of injury. With resources stretched to the limit, youngster Matthias had to play in midfield. On the bench was back-
Sergio, Patri, Guillem and Juan Carlos. Torrys starting line-up: Manolo, Vicente, Juanfran (Juan, 85 ‘), Rafa, Dan Meseguer, Cuco Ros, Matthias (Patri, 50’), Abel, Gasch, Luis Carlos (Sergio, 73 ‘), Manu Amores The match kicked-off in front of a crowd of around 400. The game was quite open with both sides having opportunities and as it wore on Muro started to get on top but Torry got the breakthrough after 27 minutes after they were awarded a penalty for hand-ball in the box by a Muro defender. Gasch took the spot-kick and the Muro keeper got a hand to it but couldn’t prevent it going into the back of the net off the inside of the post for a GOALLLL to Torry 0-1. Torry had something to fight for. However, 2 minutes later Muro were level pegging after a corner was headed by a Muro defender into the back of the net for a GOALLLLL 1-1 with Manolo rooted to the line. Muro then had a couple chances before the break which were spurned. In the second half Muro seized the initiative and had an effort fly just over the top. Torry responded and Cuco Ros had a good shot just clear the crossbar. In the 55th minute Muro went ahead
forwards and a GOALLLLL 2-1. Torry had much to do to get back into the game and pushed forward more but the Muro defence held firm and Muro were dangerous on the break with several near misses. Torry substitute Patri had a glorious opportunity to equalise towards the end but struck his shot over the bar. In injury time Cuco Ros received his marching orders for a late challenge. For Torry yellow cards were picked up by Abel and JuanFran. Torry are now 15th in the table only 2 points outside the relegation zone. On Sunday Torry travel to the outskirts of Alicante to play 8th placed Jove Espanol who lost away to league leaders Novelda last Sunday after a 5 match unbeaten run. It won’t be easy for Torry but hopefully they will be able to welcome back Burguillos and Koeman and also include new boy Villanueva if he has recovered from injury. The game is likely to kick off at lunch-time. The Torry Army is organising a coach so if you want to go and follow your local team on the road please call into the Torry Army Office in San Luis or contact Pat Stewart on 966786352 / 688698894 A getting a bit anxious Darrylldinho following his adopted team in Spain lose again.
Mazarron give a poor performance in blustery conditions, but secure a point with a goalless draw against an equally poor Corvera team. With the energetic pair of Alfonso and Barrachina both missing through suspension Mazarron were always going to struggle to get any width to their play. The game started at pedestrian pace and it wasn’t until the 20th minute that anything of note happened, this being a thumping shot from Mazarron’s Santi that crashed against the Corvera cross bar. Mazarron had a corner on 22 minutes, taken by Baeza which was easily cleared by the Corvera defence. On 28 minutes Corvera were awarded a corner which was totally wasted. The first booking of the game went to a Corvera player for a clumsy challenge on Panocha, the resulting free kick
was taken by Santi and was easily cleared. In the dying minute of the half Cecilio headed a cross from Ruben well wide. Hale Time: 0-0 The second half started a bit more brightly but the passing from both sides was mostly wayward. Mazarrons Pepelu was shown a yellow card on 55 minutes for mouthing off at the linesman. Pollo had a shot on target on 58 minutes but it lacked power and was easily collected by the Corvera Keeper. Play became very scrappy for long periods and In the 75th minute Matt Clarke came on for the under par Panocha in order to try and gain the upper hand, young Diego received Mazarrons second yellow card a minute later. On 77 minutes Cecilio headed over from close range. Mazarron assumed they had won the
game when they were awarded a penalty in the 84th minute but as in his previous attempt at taking a penalty Santi hit it very tamely and the Corvera keeper hardly had to move in order to save the spot kick. Mazarron Captain Diego came off injured on 86 minutes and was replaced by Brayn. In the 89th minute Pepelu was shown his second yellow of the game and was dismissed. Pollo could have won the game in the dying seconds but for a brilliant save by the Corvera keeper. Final score: 0-0 Team: Jose Ikea, Perico, Pepelu, Diego(capt), (Brayn), Pollo, Baeza, Jose Ruben, Santi, Cecilio, Panocha, (Matt Clarke), Diego(2). Man Of The Match: Diego(capt) Mazarron’s next game is away at Athletico Pulpileno and is scheduled for Sunday 10th February.
