Supporters of Valencia mother in international custody battle stop police from taking her children away

At least 300 residents managed to stop police from taking three children off their mother on Saturday after the courts ordered that they be sent to live with their father in Mexico.

Isabel Monrós was so upset by the thought of losing her children – one aged 13 and 10-year-old twins – that her friends and family organised an eleventh-hour protest march and demonstration via social networks.

The crowd was so large that the Guardia Civil were unable to get near the mother’s house in Alboraya (Valencia).

She issued a heartfelt and tearful thanks to all those who helped.

Valencia-born Isabel is divorced from the father of her children, Mexican national Joaquín Escolano, who has returned to his home country.

The court has ordered that they be sent to Mexico to live with their father, saying they had been brought into Spain illegally.

But the children’s thoughts on the matter have not been revealed.

Bárcenas to appeal passport confiscation

Former treasurer for the PP Luis Bárcenas is appealing against a judge’s decision to force him to hand in his passport and report to the court every two weeks.

Pablo Ruz, handling the slush fund case, considered there was a real risk of the accused fleeing the country.

Bárcenas’ Swiss bank accounts contain 22 million euros, but had held as much as 38 million in the past in order to avoid paying taxes.

The origin of the funds is not known, but the ex-treasurer insists he ‘got lucky’ on the stock market and sold various works of art, and that the money also came from two estate agency businesses he owned.

Account documents show that the PP party at national level received 33 million euros in donations between 1999 and 2007,

of which 23.7 million came from anonymous benefactors.

It is thought some of these may be construction firms bribing politicians to get building jobs.

Bárcenas is also accused of paying top-flight PP members cashin-hand extra wages over a 10-year period.

These politicians, who include Spain’s president Mariano Rajoy, deny ever receiving money in envelopes.

The accused is also suing the PP for unfair dismissal as he claims he continued working for the party for nearly 18 months after they say his employment had been terminated.

A leading union says he has a good case and is likely to be successful, which would mean he could claim dole money.

But Bárcenas has assured the nation that he has no intention of signing up to claim jobseekers’ allowance.

Traders will not have to pay IVA until they have received the money from the client

Companies and self-employed persons will no longer have to pay the IVA associated with invoices they issue to customers until they themselves have been paid.

A new law due to be passed, once it has been approved by the European Commission, states that if an invoice is never paid the IVA will not become payable by the issuer.

The only condition is that the company’s

or self-employed person’s turnover is less than two million euros a year.

This will not take effect until 2014, but the system is already in place in Italy and Austria, and also in Holland, Slovenia and Ireland although with a much lower turnover threshold.

At present, all IVA charged on invoices has to be paid by the end of the tax year on January 30, whether or not all invoices issued during the past year have been

paid by the customers.

This means companies and self-employed persons having to fork out IVA that they have not received first, leaving them out of pocket until they are permitted to claim it back at the end of the following year.

In many countries, IVA, or VAT, is not payable unless and until a company or self-employed person has a minimum turnover, which is normally fairly high and that associated with at least a medium-

sized company with several employees.

But in Spain, all self-employed workers, irrespective of how much they earn, have to charge IVA on all their fees.

Another move to be introduced in 2014 is that of offering tax reductions on capital investment and investigation and development (I+D) as an incentive for companies to grow and become more modern and competitive.

AVE rail ticket discounts Valencia man in Kenyan jail now include 30% off for for drug-smuggling dies the under-26s A new ‘young person’s rail card’ has just been launched throughout Spain allowing passengers aged 25 and under to travel with a 30 per cent discount on set prices.

By paying a membership fee of 22 euros a year, they can use the high-speed AVE trains at a reduced cost.

At present, the under-26s account for just 1.3 per cent of passengers on the AVE, although the ministry of public works and infrastructure hopes this will increase with the discounts.

The high-speed cross-country train service dropped its prices overall by 11 per cent on February 8, and since then has sold nearly 850,000 tickets – an increase of 38 per cent on the same period in 2012.

According to the government, the idea is that the AVE should be ‘for everyone’ and ‘not just for the rich’.

The price cuts are mainly due to the fact that these fast long-distance trains usually only have four in 10 seats occupied, meaning they run at a loss.

But now, discounts of up to 70 per cent can be found for booking a long way in advance or right at the last minute, and up to 40 per cent for regular users, plus the 30 per cent discount on top of this with the young person’s rail card

Benzema’s speeding trial due for day of Spain-France match

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema is due to appear in court for driving at 216 kilometres per hour.

He had already been summoned to appear on Tuesday, but requested it be rescheduled due to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup).

The player was caught on camera on the M-40 motorway in a 100-kilometre limit on February 3 and his trial is now due for March 26, the day France and Spain are due to play at the Stade de France in a bid to get

through to the World Cup in 2014 in Brazil.

But the 25-year-old will not miss the match, because this is at 20.00hrs and his court case, in Pozuelo de Alarcón – the nearest to where he was seen breaking the speed limit – is at 10.00hrs.

The trial will only be a short one, probably about 10 minutes, but Benzema could face a 12-month ban and a six-month jail sentence.

However, in Spain, a first-time offender does not have to go to prison if the sentence is less than two years.

Mayoress takes disciplinary action against police officer for giving her a parking fine The Mayoress of La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz) has taken disciplinary action against a Local Police officer for giving her a parking ticket.

Gemma Araujo (pictured) had left her car in a bay reserved for council staff, but it did not have a sticker on it to show she was a member of the council – and in fact, the leader of it.

The Local Police union for the town is incensed by her response and says the officer had no way of knowing that the car belonged to the mayoress, a member of the PSOE socialist party, as it did not have an official sticker on it.

But by looking up the registration number on a handheld computer, police officers can immediately tell whom a car belongs to.

The officers’ union says: “We should like to point out that,

whilst the rest of the town complies with traffic laws and when they do not, they are sanctioned by the authorities who have the power to do so vested in them, the mayoress is always the first to flout these laws.

“She had parked her car in a reserved space without authorisation and neither Ms Araujo, nor the rest of her local government team, are exempt from complying with traffic laws.

“If she parks in a space reserved for authorised persons, she needs a permit accrediting that she is entitled to do so.”

The union says Araujo’s response to the incident is adding insult to injury, since her council cabinet owes the Local Police eight months’ wages.

They say that instead of

seeking solutions to the ‘serious problem’ of the police force having been working for eight months – and counting – without getting paid, Araujo ‘constantly wastes police time’ by ‘directly attacking the Local Police force’.

A Valencian A man facing life imprisonment in Kenya for drug-smuggling has died in a Nairobi hospital.

Pascual F., 52, who had never been in any way involved in drugs before – according to his family – had always insisted he was innocent after 10 kilos of cocaine were found in his suitcase. He was on a plane from São Paulo (Brazil) to Nairobi and had always claimed the drugs must have been slipped into his case when the airline made a fuel stop in Ghana.

His lawyer had been trying to get him released on humanitarian grounds due to his health, since he had been hospitalised several times since his arrest in early August 2012 for chronic hepatitis, a hernia and liver cirrhosis. The trial due for February 6 was unable to take place because the accused was in hospital.

Until a post-mortem is carried out, the exact cause of death cannot be ascertained, but his ex-wife and two daughters, aged 17 and 20, have been informed by the Spanish embassy in Nairobi.

“Now there’s no way his innocence can be proven,” lamented the deceased’s ex-wife.

“Pascual has never, ever been involved in drugs. He was a very trustworthy person and very gullible, very easily-led, which is why

someone got away with putting drugs in his case.”

The accused had been working in a seatbelt factory but after being made redundant in June last year, became desperate and was facing financial ruin.

He lived in a neighbourhood in Valencia with a high population of African immigrants, mainly from Ghana.

Some of his neighbours offered him 8,000 euros to travel to Ghana and marry a woman there to get her residence rights in Spain and, as he was desperate for money to survive, agreed to do it despite his family trying to talk him out of it.

“They said they’d pay for everything, and he’s a very easily-led person, very gullible,” said a relative.

But the first stop on the plane from Spain was São Paulo, since his neighbours who had offered him the money said this was a much cheaper route.

“They must have already been planning to plant the drugs on him when they worked this all out,” Pascual’s relative said.

He was arrested in Nairobi airport (pictured) and was facing a life sentence in a Kenyan jail and a fine of 1.2 million euros.

Bottled gas to go up in May

Gas bottles will go up from 16.10 euros to 17.50 euros in May, and prices will be reviewed every two months thereafter, announces the ministry of industry.

They intend to impose a maximum price for the year of 17.50 euros, and where consumer purchases do not cover costs, the deficit can be dealt with later.

This is so that where costs go above 17.50 euros per bottle, this increase will not be passed onto the customer – for the year 2013 at least.

Those who get their gas bottles via a delivery contract normally have to pay slightly more to cover the cost of distribution.

The price increase is said to be a way of clawing back the deficit generated in January and, once this has been covered, the ministry will consider creating a ‘charity gas bottle’ scheme for the most hard-pressed consumers.

Iberia staff have threatened another fiveday strike right over Easter weekend unless some progress is made with the company’s management.

They say Iberia bosses have presented a new working conditions agreement which they consider to be ‘taking the mickey’.

This was given to them on a CD and they were told to sign to say they had received it, which they refused to do until they knew what the contents of it contained.

Pilots had already

proposed they themselves took a 26 per cent pay cut, but Iberia told them they would lose between 30 and 35 per cent since, in addition to their wages dropping drastically, they would also no longer get expenses or transport costs paid. They would also lose the right to eight days’ holiday and seven days of public holidays or days off in lieu of these.

Furthermore, they will be expected to work longer hours and provide more flexibility to the firm.

Overall, Iberia’s losses in 2012 totalled 923 million euros.

Pilots, ground staff and cabin crew have attempted to compromise by saying they will accept the new and much worse working conditions if the firm agrees to halt the redundancies. Their own suggestions for increasing productivity and their willingness to take a pay cut would cover the needs of the company, says their union. This coming week, a further five-day strike will see Iberia losing another 50 million euros.

So far, the airline has managed to find seats on flights for 38,000 of its 40,000 passengers booked to travel next week.

In the meantime, Professor Gregorio Tudela, Dean of Employment Law, is acting as mediator between the staff unions and Iberia’s management. If, by this coming Wednesday, no progress is made, workers say they will be on strike over Easter weekend.

On Saturday 9th March . PALS will present emergency medical equipment to the value of 11281,16 Euros to the emergency team of 112 and the Ayuntamiento of Mazarron. This latest donation includes three defibrillators bringing to a total of 20 such machines provide locally by PALS (Protection and life Saving).

Incorporated as one of the first registered expat charities in the area PALS have now donated a total of 188.418 Euros worth of medical equipment, much of it for the emergency teams in the area, including FAST, 112 and Cruz Roja, some equipment was also supplied to health centres in Puerto de Mazarron, Mazarron and Fuente Alamo..

Explaining the concept is that PALS recognise the efforts of the emergency teams and that the equipment is outside the current budgetary restraints in these hard times. Ken Payne, President of PALS stated that ‘we reckon we should be grateful to our hosts for allowing us the privilege of living here, they welcome us and do not interfere in our strange ways, and we believe that its good to put something back’.

Further news, at the presentation which will be in the open market in Mazarron town on Saturday there will be live music presented by Costa Calida International radio, one of CAFÉ s biggest sponsors, and a chance to inspect and support financially the ambulance that CAFÉ (Community Ambulance Fund Espana) hope to order on that day with delivery in April. CAFE are administered by PALS and the Lions and to date have through various

events raised the princely sum of 45142.05 Euros towards to cost of 57536.23 Euros required for this fully equipped vehicle that will form a valuable additional part of the local ambulance fleet.

PALS announced at the beginning of the year that they would put all their efforts in 2013 to provide the extra money and obviously welcome any help on this Saturday which they see as a fund raiser, Ken Payne said that PALS would however fund the shortfall until the balance is restored so it’s April for the new ambulance. ‘This is not a gamble because we know the generosity of the expats and that they will support us in this’. How few people have never required the use of an ambulance and this new additional top range vehicle will be sited centrally for the use of everybody regardless of nationality, colour or creed and may be the used to save the life of someone you hold dear.

So PALS ask you to watch the 12 o’clock presentation and the ambulance will be open for viewing from 11 till2 on Saturday.

STOP PRESS we have agree with the vehicle suppliers that on Friday 8th March the vehicle will stop off in Camposol on Sector B so that it can be seen, not inspected,. That’s for the next day but must reassure those who thought that it would never happen.

Danish passengers soar

Budget airline passenger numbers fell by four per cent last month on the previous year’s figures, although ‘traditional’ flight companies saw a 7.7 per cent drop in travellers to Spain.

According to a report by ThinkSpain, lowcost airlines only just pip traditional ones at the post with an almost 50-50 split, and the UK continues to be the former’s largest market, representing three in 10 passengers flying to Spain – slightly ahead of Germany, which accounts for just under a fifth.

But numbers have fallen since the same period in 2012, with around half a million fewer British travellers and 300,000 fewer German passengers.

Italy, France and the Netherlands make up the rest of the top five, in that order,

but Italian and Dutch custom on cheap flights plummeted in January by 20 and 14 per cent respectively.

French fliers also fell by three per cent, but Scandinavian passenger numbers soared last month with a rise of 39 per cent for Norway and 27 per cent for Denmark.

Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling accounted for 55 per cent of total low-cost flights to and from Spain, and the Canary Islands saw the most arrivals, followed by Catalunya, the Comunidad Valenciana, Madrid, Andalucía and the Balearic Islands.

Barcelona’s El Prat, Madrid’s Barajas and Tenerife South were the three most popular airports for budget flight companies.

I can think of no better place to be than the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre, Torrevieja, at 10 AM on Thursday March 21st.

If it’s blowing a gale from Siberia, or rain from the north of Spain, you can keep both warm and dry, but more importantly, obtain information that may help to save a life.

This “Outreach Event” is being organised by the British Consulate in Alicante, in conjunction with the Department of Works and Pensions, and the Ayuntamiento in Torrevieja.

The event will offer news regarding health services in Spain, and use of the European Blue Card, otherwise known as the “EHIC” This event is part funded by The European Commission, and is organised by the the healthcare team, with representatives based at the British Consulate in Alicante. It is in collaboration with the U.K. Department of Health and the Agencia Valenciana De Salut.

The Centro Cultural Virgen Del Carmen, is located at the Auditorio-Calle Ramo’n Gallud, on the corner with Calle del Mar,Torrevieja.

SEMANA SANTA 2013

Ray Marsh, co-ordinator for the British contingent of Paso carriers, in Pilar De La Horadada, incidentally, one of only three towns in Spain that grants this privilege to non Spanish residents, is looking for more ladies, to follow the Paso, as it makes it’s way around the narrow streets of Pilar. Ray tells me that in addition to his quest for the ladies, he would be very pleased to hear from any broad shouldered men, who like to take part in this moving ceremony, during Easter.

There are a number dates where the Church Banner is carried through the streets, but Sunday March 24th and Friday 29th are the days when the gentlemen’s shoulders take a battering. Ray says that it would be nice to have some additional members on the team, to relieve the regulars, as they make their way around Pilar De La Horadada.

A HARMONIUS INTERLUDE

Talented company “Soliistas de Lirica Nostra” have a new date for their concert at the Auditorio Palacio de la Mu’sica, Torrevieja.

Conductor Angel Gonza’lez, has advised that the performance will now take place on Saturday March 16th.. Angle will make his way to the podium at 9 PM., so time for tapas and an aperitif in the town, before taking your seats.

Ticket prices remain at 6 euro, and may be purchased from the Municipal booking office, in the square opposite the Municipal Theatre, but only between 11 AM and 1 PM..

Angel tells me that the programme will contain a wide selection of music, and promises a night to remember.

“What’s the point of sprucing up one end of the village, when this vandalised monstrosity welcomes visitors from the direction of Pilar De La Horadada” This was the gist of a communication I received from a member of the Residents Association, in the hamlet of Pinar De Campoverde this week.

A photograph in the Sol Times last week, showed the extent of disruption the residents have had to endure over the last few months. The town plaza is next to get a makeover, with an area put aside for the popular Sunday Market, along with car parking slots. A number of new trees will no doubt grace the boundry of the square, an aspect I’m sure the local Mayor will find pleasant, as he glances out from his office window.

“Perhaps it would concentrate the mind of “The powers that be” if we took the “Sign” down, and plonked it in the square one night” said the association member” I certainly could not concede to such an act. (Not a bad idea though!)

Easy Horse Care and Little Pod Association have been invited to a stall at a photographic exhibition on Saturday 16th March there will be a photographic exhibition at Restaurant Asturias, Punta Prima, from 12 noon to 5 pm.

This will feature photographs and art work by Jess Calke who is visiting Orihuela Costa.

Jess is well established and has gained her qualifications from the UK Royal Photographic Society. Her latest range of work is being shown for the first time internationally at this exhibition.

Jess’s photographic preferences lie firmly within the natural world. Her experiences have drawn her back to the earth’s creatures each time she’s deviated. This has most recently been cemented by her largest single body of work taken on safari in Tanzania. Her style has traditionally been that of pure photography, untouched, as seen through the eye of the camera during that split second of time. Recently however, she has been drawn in by the techno march. This has led to diversifying to create and build images which merge her skills of the natural world with additional techniques. This culminates in producing a distinctive inaugural series of larger than life Big Cat canvases. Jess’s work has and is being featured in various National Trust properties in England Jess has invited two local Charities to share in her day. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre and Little Pod Association will be holding a book and merchandise sale.

Little Pod is hoping to raise much needed funds to enable Pia a young Podenco to have an operation to straighten her front leg.

Despite changes in the line up both personal and professional the band endured and kept going transitioning from a blues band to a pop, rock group. Their 10th album self entitled ´´Fleetwood Mac´´ bought the band critical acclaim and unprecedented commercial success as it topped the charts and sold in the neighbourhood of 5 million copies. With a line up of Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine Mcvie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks they must have been feeling pretty good when they entered the studio during 1976 to record their next album.

These experiences informed the albums lyrics and with all that was happening it was a miracle the album was ever made let alone become the classic that it is.

Influenced by pop music, the tracks were recorded using a combination of acoustic and electric instruments. The mixing process delayed the completion of the album but it was finished by the end of 1976.

The band wanted to expand on the commercial success of the last album and then, after tasting triumph, it all fell apart, amidst affairs and acrimony. With every member of the band touched by some degree of relationship hell, they made a trouble-filled, cocaine-fuelled album . . . that sounded like a thousand angels kissing you sweetly on the forehead.

For this mission would necessarily antagonise the political authorities of the day as he taught that obedience to God and conscience outweighed the demands of any mere mortal, however great they may consider themselves.

And worse, he outraged the religious leaders too, who found themselves side-lined and their power base under threat with his assertions that all were of equal value to God and that, however good or religious they may seem, all were equally sinful and in need of undeserved forgiveness, which he alone could offer.

So considerable preparation was required; and in that 40-day period, as in the months that followed, Jesus faced many a temptation to moderate his message, to court instead of criticise the authorities and to take the easy route, seeking popularity rather than truth. But the message of Lent is that despite the natural temptations, Jesus resisted all attempts to divert him from his destiny and faithfully continued proclaiming the message that led to his inevitable execution, which, as the means of the forgiveness he so freely offered, we particularly remember on Good Friday.

How much then we need to learn from this period of Lent. How easily we, who claim to be Christian, can find ourselves being diverted from the true teachings of Christ. How often are we ourselves tempted to moderate his message, to consider popular opinion or political approval rather than his somewhat unpalatable teaching that all, however good or religious we may seem, are equally sinful, unable to earn favour with God, but needing instead to simply accept his offer of undeserved forgiveness, made available through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ himself

“Memories, like the corners of your mind” - what wally wrote this? Although the analogy is somewhat suspect, the basic idea of a human memory having corners, in which we lose so much, truly is daft. Although a walk down “Physiognomy” lane might be an interesting diversion, the editors would like purely technology based articles! So let’s get started!

For our “techo bit” today, we shall get to grips with organic and technological memory in an attempt to demystify another aspect of the computer! Did you know that computer memory is modelled after our own memory model in as much as we have 2 defined storage types – Long Term and Short Term? So today, can we look at memory, both yours and your computer’s, and draw analogies to help understand both ourselves and the magic box that we sit in front of for far to long each day - at least that’s what happens when people have problems with their computers that they can’t solve themselves. Enter knight in shining armour :-) So we will start with “Short Term” storage. In computer terms this is called volatile memory as in non-permanent. In humans this is called “Short term memory”. The device used in computers is called RAM (Random Access Memory or if you’re from the other side of “the pond”, Read And Modify – symantics!). The benefit of Short term memory (STM) is its ability to be used as a temporary storage area where work is done and then the area is “Self Cleaning”. The disadvantage of this is the fact that it is “Self Cleaning”! Maybe a “A” level psychology (if it is still there – somewhere) might put things into perspective.

The human STM has a limit of between 5 and 9 seconds. The mid point of 7 seconds really isn’t long in universal time, but compare that to the 64 milliseconds (64/1000th of a second) at which rate a RAM chip needs to be refreshed, it is a monumental difference!

Now, providing the refresh is done, the information stored there can be held, theoretically at least, indefinitely. Years of experimentation within the field of Psychology has shown that ANY interruptions during this refresh process will cause the information to be immediately and permanently lost! This is true for both organic and non-organic storage systems.

There is a huge amount of information regarding memory chips, most of it can descend to great depths extremely quickly. Today you have gotten and overview comparison of our and a computer’s short term memory. You have seen before that computers are essentially stupid and now start to be know just how wonderful the human mind is!

The next nibble will be about Long Term Storage – including Hard Drive, Solid State Drives and Non-volatile memory. So enjoy your week, use your mind and hopefully the weather will pick up!

2012 luckily ended with the Mayan prophecy unfulfilled; yet just a few weeks later a meteorite the size of a double decker bus smashed into Siberia injuring hundreds. A few hours later and the spin of the Earth would have seen it strike Northern England causing much more damage as it’s a much heavier populated area. The next day an asteroid half the size of a football stadium missed the earth by just 17,000 miles.

For years governments have procrastinated about whether to invest a few million in an early warning system to guard against strikes just like this latest one. Now finally ATLAS is being built in Hawaii costing the magnificent sum of $5 million. It will give one weeks warning of anything 45m across and 3 weeks for anything 150m across though hard hats need to be worn until it’s finally ready in 2015.

Since 1997 the Kyoto Protocol has been in place to curb and reduce emissions; it’s been signed and ratified by 192 countries excepting Sudan and Afghanistan who have internal wars raging; plus Andorra and The Vatican who have a combined population of just 86,000 and with only observer status at the United Nations. The world’s biggest polluter the US is above signing a mere document to save the world as its businesses may lose money.

With the internet and television it’s easier to expose wrong doing than ever before; people power stops corporations and politicians ruining the environment for their own selfish gains. Last week Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall protested with thousands of people outside Parliament because the UK Government reneged on its promise to create 127 safe havens for fish stocks around British shores instead watering it down to less than 20.

A Polish fugitive led police to a secret hiding place inside his home - when he suddenly sneezed.

Let’s again embrace the four seasons; eating our winter greens, spring vegetables, then summer salads followed by autumn fruit. This is how it used to be before the advent of global supply chains and huge supermarkets.

They are the bane of many a teenager’s life, but the days of spots may now be numbered after scientists discovered why some people are more prone to them than others.

The researchers, from UCLA, have discovered more about the bacteria that live on the skin and cause acne.

They have found that this bacteria contains ‘bad’ strains which cause pimples and ‘good’ ones that may protect the skin. Having too much ‘bad’ bacteria is what causes spots, they say.

This is rather like an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut causing digestive issues.

According to the report featured on Mail Online, it is not yet clear why some people have more of either type of bacteria, or what comes first - the acne or the bacteria.

Other factors. such as an individual’s genetic make-up or the sensitivity of their immune system, may also dictate whether good or bad strains grow on skin.

However, the breakthrough could pave the way for the development of new acne treatments.

and 30 will be affected by acne. It can continue well into adult life - about 5 per cent of women and 1 per cent of men over 25 also have the condition.

‘We learned that not all acne bacteria trigger pimples — one strain may help keep skin healthy,’ said the study’s principal investigator, Dr Huiying Li, an assistant professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at UCLA. ‘We hope to apply our findings to develop new strategies that stop blemishes before they start, and enable dermatologists to customise treatment to each patient’s unique cocktail of skin bacteria.’

The scientists, who published their findings in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, looked at a microbe – propionibacterium – that thrives in oily pores. When these bacteria aggravate the immune system, they cause the swollen, red bumps associated with acne.

Using over-the-counter pore-cleansing strips, researchers lifted the bacteria from the noses of 49 pimply and 52 clear-skinned volunteers. After extracting DNA from the strips, the laboratory identified the bacterial strains in each volunteer’s pores and recorded whether the person suffered from acne.

‘We were interested to learn that the bacterial strains looked very different when taken from diseased skin, compared to healthy skin,’ said co-author Dr Noah Craft, a dermatologist at the UCLA Medical Centre.

He added: ‘Two unique strains of bacteria appeared in one out of five volunteers with acne but rarely occurred in clear-skinned people.’

However, the biggest breakthrough came when the scientists discovered a third strain of the bacteria that is common in healthy skin. They believe that this strain contains a natural defence mechanism that enables it to recognise attackers and to destroy them before they infect the bacterial cell.

dancing on ice Week 9

This week all the couples had to skate twice, the first routine as they have been doing and the second was including aerial flying. Several of the celebrities had problems with motion sickness and most overcame it as the weeks training went on. Not the case however for Gareth who was sick every time he took to the air and whose problem increased as the week progressed. He ended up unable to do the aerial performance on the night on the advice of the medical team of the show, so had the added disadvantage of having only half the score of his opposition leaving all to the public to save him.

Opening the show were Matt & Brianne performing to Straighten up and fly right. Wow, wow, wow!! This guy is the only celebrity who can actually perform and gets into the character of every role he plays. This first opener included his aerial skills which were seamless onto and off the ice. Attitude, character and presentation plus. I awarded him 9.5 and the judges 39.0 and the highest score of the series.

Next out were Beth & Dan skating to Jessie J’s Domino. Beth’s flexibility is unbelievable but unfortunately she still hasn’t been able to deliver on the presentation front and I agreed with Jason when he described her presentation as mechanical. If only she could lift her core just a few inches it would make a world of difference to her performance level and I’m sure she would connect much more both with her partner and the public watching her. I gave her 8.5 and she received 32.5 from the judges her personal series best.

Beth was followed by Luke & Jenna performing their aerial number to Higher Love. Although this was a clean performance it was again lacking presentation because of the same reasons as Beth, lack of core lift and outward projection.

The judges gave him 30.5 and I awarded him 7.5.

Closing the first part of the show were Gareth and Robyn with Viva La Vida. Gareth was not his normal self with this number which was lacklustre. It was clean and the lifts were well controlled but it was lacking. It was only after the performance that we found out he had been suffering with the continual motion sickness due to the aerial work. He received 7.0 from myself and 33.5 from the judges.

Luke & Jenna opened the second performance with What About Now by Westlife. Again for me lacking in presentation, depth of knee and speed over the ice. There were a couple of occasions coming out of lifts that the movement virtually stopped altogether. I’m sorry but he is just not cutting the grade for me at this level. I gave him 7.0 and he received his best personal series score of 31.5 from the judges.

Second to skate were Gareth & Robyn, but as we have heard he had to retire on medical advice, leaving him with only one performance score against his competitors two numbers so in reality can he survive??

Next were Matt & Brianne skating to Michael

Jackson’s Bad. This was Matt to a Tee. A superb character performance with great Jackson moves and with excellent lifts and tricks. I gave him 9.5 and the judges 39.0 and top spot on their table.

Closing the show were Beth & Dan performing their aerial number to Angel. How different two performances can be!! This was exactly what was lacking in her first performance. It was very elegant, beautifully performed, it fit the music perfectly and the transitions were superb. I awarded her 9.5 and the judges gave her 38.0 and her personal series best. If ever a time to do it this was it!

The judges bottom 2 were Luke & obviously Gareth with only the single performance but will he be saved by the public, will he have to dance off?? In the end, Gareth was unable to partake in the skate off due to his illness which meant that Matt, Beth and Luke go through to the final next week.

All of the finalists skated their skate off performances to fill the time left by not having the dance off and this has left me in very little doubt for the final 2. It will depend upon Beth’s performance value next week to challenge Matt as I don’t consider Luke capable unless there is a miracle week for him. So who will up their game to take next week’s coveted title? Until next week - keep dancing!!

THE SPAINIAC | Altamira Caves | Candice Parsons back to the Magdalenean and Solutrean people, have now endorsed the international fame of these caves as the ‘Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic art’.

The Altamira caves (Altamira translating to ‘high views’ in Spanish), in comparison to the other caves in Cantabria, remain well preserved due to the isolation of their deep recesses and galleries from climate and weather affects.

Another ancient wonder to add to the nation’s pool of UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Altamira Caves lie in northern Spain near the town of Santillana del Mar, nested amongst the mountains of the Cantabria region.

It was 1868 when the hunter Modesto Cubillas first discovered the caves and subsequently informed local amateur archaeologist, Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, who then began excavations on the floor of the cave’s entrance chamber in 1879.

During these excavations,

Sautuola’s eight year old daughter, María, led him to discover the drawings and polychrome rock paintings of animals, human-like masks, and stencilled hands on the walls and ceilings of the caves.

Since setting up office in 1993, I have been surprised by the amount of people who have come to ask whether it is convenient to make a will in Spain concerning their Spanish assets. The answer to this is most definitely yes. In England if you do not make a will, then the law has rules, which will determine the distribution of your assets. These rules could mean that your assets are distributed in a way very different from what you would have liked. In Spain the situation is the same, with an additional factor. Your heirs will have to deal with a foreign language and legal system. All the more reasons to leave everything as organised as possible. Some people include their Spanish assets in their English will. This is legally binding, but to obtain probate in Spain, it will be necessary for the will to be translated and legalised. This is a long and costly procedure. My advice on the subject is to have two separate wills, one in England for your English assets and one in Spain for your Spanish assets.

Drawing up a will in Spain does not take long and is not expensive, and will definitely save your heirs a lot of time, problems and money. Your Lawyer will draw up a rough draft, and then he will make an appointment at the notary to sign the final document. One copy is sent by the notary to the central register in Madrid. He will hold on to the original copy. You will be given a copy that I suggest you inform your heirs and lawyer in England about, and then put it in the bottom drawer, with the peace of mind of knowing that everything is taken care of.

From this preservation, the numerous archeologists that have excavated within the site over time, have been able to decipher the various inhabitants of the cave and their daily activities between 22, 000 and 14, 000 BC - some 40, 000 years ago.

Running in a straight line of around 270 metres long, the Altamira caves sit 158.5 metres above sea level in the upper part of a karst formation on Mount

Vispieres.

The caves have been attracting more and more visitors since its discovery, and increasingly promoting the tourism of the Cantabria region.

By 1970, it became apparent that the large volumes of visitors to the caves were noticeably damaging its paintings, and was closed to the public by 1977.

The caves reopened in 1982, however with limited access and very few visitors permitted entry per day.

Altamira caves resulted in a three year waiting list for visitors, until Manuel Franquelo and Sven Nebel reproduced a replica cave and museum nearby in 2001, showcasing a more accessible and comfortable

display of the replicated polychrome paintings, as well as sculptures not visible in the actual caves.

The replica museum of the Altamira caves, may not feel as wondrous as seeing the paintings and remains of the real caves, yet remains highly impressive in its depictions of humanity’s earliest art and cultural traditions, and gives an insightful enlightening of this fascinating assertion of history.

I hate the wind. I enjoy the sun - in moderation, last summer was a bit too much of a good thing; I don’t mind the rain; it rains so infrequently that when it does rain, it is something of a novelty, but the wind, as I see it, serves no useful purpose at all. However, probably due to my reluctance to go out in it, I have been indoors, thinking.

My style of thinking is very akin to that of Winnie the Pooh – I don’t go chasing around all over the place after the thoughts, I sit and wait for them to come to me.

And come they do – the questions, that is, but they forget

For instance, where does the wind come from? And where does it go to?

Wind is made of air, and I know that it is possible to squash air up, and also to spread it out thin, like at altitude. So if you imagine that air over the earth is like butter spread on wholemeal bread, then on the flat smooth bits it will be thicker than on the sticky-up bits like the grains, or in this case, the mountains.

That’s fine on a calm day, but what happens when it’s windy?

The air gets forcibly shoved from where it is to somewhere else – our metaphorical butter gets a celestial knife behind it and gets scraped from where it was nice and evenly spread on our metaphorical slice of bread to right up against the

crust on the far side, leaving us with a slice of almost bare bread but with a great lump of butter (or in this case air) nearly toppling off the edge.

I worry that this will leave us with hardly enough air to be going along with. I want to know where it is all going to, because as I see it, if we haven’t got enough, at the other end of the wind someone else has got too much. I need to know where the other end of the wind is, so that I can go there and get some of our air back again!

Never mind the Higgs Boson Particle, forget about Dark Matter and Black Holes, the scientists should be concentrating on finding the end of the wind – this could be really important!

And while they are at it, maybe they will find the end of the rainbow too, that would be helpful in these hard times!

Grumble From the Jungle

I have just had a hard day cutting out the bougainvillea hedge from the front wall and the two wrought iron archways over the gates, and trying unsuccessfully to grub out the well established roots. After nearly seven years of growth, they are proving irritatingly reluctant to give up their hold on life.

Bougainvillea - and for that matter palm trees – are akin to Breville toasters and George Foreman grills. Everyone wants one, but then after a while they are stuck away in the cupboard and forgotten about . . . they seem like a good idea at the time, but soon become a nuisance taking

up valuable space.

I remember our reaction when we took possession of the house here and saw that there was a palm in the garden – what a cool item this was and it didn’t cost us any extra! Then when friends from England came to visit, their response was exactly the same; we could imagine them going back home and telling mutual friends, “. . . and they’ve got an actual palm tree in their garden!”

“Ooh”, would be the gasped reply, “Got any photos?” And out would come the holiday pics.

But as any proud palm owner knows, the damn things grow . . . and grow and then grow some more. In fact they never stop growing and the bigger they get the more difficult and expensive it becomes to keep them pruned and looking good. If it’s the wrong sex, then you have the additional problem of not only having your whole property covered in seeds

resembling gerbil droppings, but also the street and every house in the area up to a radius of two hundred metres.

friend and a female who, both my pal and I hoped might become a little more than just a friend in the course of time.

In fact, and as an aside, immediately after our ad in the local paper for a third person to share our property and more importantly the rent, appeared, we were inundated with callers.

Good affordable accommodation was, and still is, at a premium in Bermuda. It became apparent very quickly that for every female applicant, there were five male candidates vying for the privilege of shacking up with Yours Truly & Co. We therefore made a decision that in the interests of sexual equality, we would only consider the female ones for a face to face interview.

Anyway, I digress.

The very next day after moving in to ‘Little Arches’ - which was ideally located near the Hamilton city centre and even more ideally located a very short walk from the Robin Hood pub – I was on my way to the said establishment when I spotted that first bougainvillea in a neighbouring garden.

It had been managed and pruned so that it had become a small tree, and was an explosive mass of crimson. Breathtaking.

I made my mind up there and then that given the chance; someday I too would have one

To say that normality reigned in Alqueria would be an over statement.

A return to the sectarian sniping and gamesman ship was somehow comforting after the recent turmoil in the village republic.

The worldwide sales of Remitroot products brought in sufficient cash to keep Alqueria in relative comfort.

Life returned to the daily grind of undeclared war between the village’s two barrios.

As the days dragged by, government ministers became increasingly more lethargic. Manuela past her time trying to make Rodriquez choke by firing paper-clips into his open mouth as he slept. Poyato spent the empty hours trying to invent new Remitroot cocktails. He usually drank himself into insensibility by midday. Blythe Gruntmore improved his Spanish. Unfortunately the course was written for English speakers and not Geordies. His pronunciation of both the English and Spanish qualified as linguistic gems.

The high power inertia eventually transformed itself into low power endeavour after the acceptance of a resolution twinning Alqueria to another European town. Serendipity settled the question of which town and where. By a coincidence of unbelievable proportions a letter arrived at the Ayuntamiento from an independent republic within the borders of England. It suggested twinning. The Republic of Uggaby lay in a bend of the River Waveney. Not in Suffolk or Norfolk and subsequently disowned by the British Government, it now enjoys independence.

A series of wonderfully colourful telephone calls took place. Pidgin English versus pidgin Spanish, as the leaders of the two villages made the necessary arrangements. The three Alquerian leaders would visit Uggaby and vice versa. Manuela eagerly looked forward to the expedition but hoped the rumours about the prowess of British men were untrue.

The delegation had to travel through the United Kingdom to reach Uggaby which is landlocked and unable to afford an airport. There were initial problems with visas due to Alqueria’s rather grey international status. The permissions were eventually granted as long as the group went straight through England and didn´t touch anything.

Gruntmore was apprehensive about returning to his native land. It appeared that a story he told about one of his relatives being awarded the ‘Order of the British Empire’ was in fact ‘ordered out of the British Empire’. He was however needed as an interpreter despite the fact his Spanish was appalling and his Geordie accent was incomprehensible to anyone south of Middlesbrough.

What will befall the ‘Iberian Three’ as they prepare to embark for Uggaby?

Never has the expression – ‘be careful what you wish for’, been more apt.

There is no doubt that bougainvillea is a beautiful addition to any garden, but as a first cousin to Triffids, it is an invasive bully and a litter lout supreme.

During the flowering season and particularly when there is even the hint of a breeze, sweeping up becomes an operation that has to be repeated two or three times a day if you are particular about the tidiness of your garden.

It has to be admitted that we got so brassed off with the constant

sweeping that sometimes we would simply leave it and any unfortunate visitors would have to take their chances and try to wade through the stuff. We are pretty sure that we have even lost a couple of people on the way, not having seen one or two acquaintances for some time.

So it all had to go. The space that is left between gates will be filled with block work and rendered, thus restoring our privacy, and all plants from now on will be billeted in pots.

Including perhaps one small obedient bougainvillea?

Last week I touched on the fact that environmentalists are concerned that caves in Cantabria may be put at risk due to fracking technology and I commented on one of the caves called El Sidrón, in Asturias, where exceptionally, well-preserved Neanderthal remains have been discovered.

This is of interest to me because of a recent documentary program where Eddy Izzard goes in search of ancestry and finds an abnormal high amount of Neanderthal DNA, relatively speaking, from the rest of the population.

At their peak these squat, physically powerful hunters dominated a wide range spanning Britain and Iberia in the west, Israel in the south and Siberia in the east. However, the last known evidence of Neanderthals comes from Gibraltar and is dated to between

What I find amusing is that I read that the one of the reasons why the Iberian Peninsula was a bolt hole for the remainder of the Neanderthals was because of the warm, temperate climate -Ha! ha! which proves that modern man has more in common with them than first thought -Why? Well , most of us have moved to Spain to enjoy warmer temperatures this country offers, as did the Neanderthals.

The question asked by many scientists is: What happened to the Neanderthals?

The skeletal evidence that has emerged over more than 150 years, added with the tremendous and growing store of genetic information from ancient DNA, are providing the answers and is resulting in the richest and most interesting scientific data in paleoanthropology today, proving that there are strong links to Spain.

It has become evident that the Neanderthals did not in fact become extinct as a result of competition with ‘superior’ modern humans; but instead, Neanderthals merged with other humans to form a mixed, single modern species (Homo sapiens). It turns out that the Basque people of the western Pyrenees have the largest genetic inheritance from the Neanderthals in their DNA and some people maintain that their “descendants are still with us, and they are the Basques”.

This is interesting because the Basque people have always been maintained their separateness from Spain and now even the genetic evidence supports this. The genetic boundary between Basques and non/Basques is very sharp on the Spanish side but on the French side it is more diffuse.

They share a number of traits with the Neanderthals, some strong physical characteristics ie: The Basque type with long straight nose, thick eyebrows, strong chin and long earlobes. There is also the Rhesus-negative blood factor as the Basque population has the largest percentage 33% of any human population living today and then there is the language, which is related to no other on earth.

People have unsuccessfully tried to connect Basque with almost all the languages in the world both living and dead.

shown to be related to any other language at all”, therefore the language strongly defines the Basque people.

The structure of the Basque language is also very distinctive, it is said to contain only nouns, verbs, and suffixes. In the Basque Language, called Euskera, there is no word for Basque. The land is called Euskal Herria - the land of Euskera speakers. Whatever the conclusions you may draw, the fact is that we all share Neanderthal DNA and with people of European descent it can be as high as 5% When Eddie Izzard found out that he shared a higher proportion of Neanderthal DNA he did not seem best pleased and that is because of the word Neanderthal is still a byword for a dumb brute. Modern studies dispute this conclusion and Scientists working in south-western Spain have uncovered perforated mollusc shells, some coloured with pigments, in some of the archaeological sites linked to Neanderthals.

The jewellery and cosmetics therefore point to a mind capable of symbolic representation and even complex language, once thought only to reside in Homo sapiens. Some are even believed to have had reddish hair and light skins. Therefore with their powerful, tough physiques and brain size above the modern average, and increasing evidence of cultural and artistic achievement the tide is now turning for these primitive humans. This all points to the fact that we may have seriously underestimated our enigmatic cousins and perhaps now, we may all become quite proud of our Neanderthal inheritance.

Next week we will delve a little deeper into the Basque people, as when I initially came to Spain, they were in the news for all the wrong reasons. This is because of ETA, who are a leftist group that conducts terrorist attacks to win independence for a Basque state in northern Spain and southwestern France. ETA stands forEuskadi ta Askatasuna, which means “Basque Fatherland and Liberty” in the Basque language.

So you can see there is much more to Spain than just sea and sun, its links to the past and future are fascinating. The 21st century Polaroid A real-life Instagram camera is set to go on sale after being backed by Polaroid.

The camera was originally developed as a concept by designers Socialmatic. It contains a lens, touchscreen and printer - and has been designed to look like the icon for Facebook’s photo sharing site.

The product was originally designed as a concept, and uses film that has space to write, and a sticky strip on the back rather like a postit note. However, after the designs became a hit online, the two firms have decided to turn them into a real product.

The camera is set to go on sale next year, and will come with camera bags, lenses, filters and other camera accessories.

‘We are so proud to work together with C & A and Polaroid, giants of digital photography,’ said Antonio De Rosa, CEO of Socialmatic.

‘It ‘s been a long and difficult negotiation but we were strongly motivated to reach an agreement to create a small revolution in digital photography.

‘This mix of Hardware and Software, together with our brand new photo social network will fill the gap between virtuality and reality.’

The firm says the design of the camera has not yet been finalised, but hopes it will go on sale next year.

Honesty pays for homeless man

An internet campaign to reward a homeless man who returned a diamond engagement ring to a woman after it fell into his cup has raised more than £100,000.

More than 7,000 people have contributed to the fund to reward Kansas man Billy Ray Harris, with 78 days to go before the 90-day appeal ends.

The campaign was set up by the fiance of Sarah Darling, who accidentally dropped her engagement ring into Mr Harris’ cup while giving him spare change.

Mr Harris discovered the ring about an hour after Ms Darling gave him the money and, although he says he knew it was incredibly valuable, decided to hold on to it, rather than cash it in.

“The ring was so big that I knew if it was real, it was expensive,” Mr Harris told local television station KCTV. Mr Harris, who usually sleeps under a bridge, said a distraught Ms Darling returned to him two days later after failing to find him the previous day.

He told a reporter: “She squatted down like you did right there and says ‘Do you remember me?’ And I was like ‘I don’t know, I see a lot of faces’.

“She says ‘I might have gave you something very valuable’. I said ‘Was it a ring?’ And she says ‘yeah’. And I said ‘Well I have it’.”

Ms Darling’s fiance Bill Krejci was so moved by Mr Harris’ kindness that he set up the GiveForward.com donation page.

Mr Harris added: “My grandfather was a reverend. He raised from the time I was six months old and thank the good Lord. It’s a blessing but I do still have some character.”

Food packaging could soon feature a label that changes colour to let you know if it has gone off. A British company today launched the smart labels that ‘activate’ when a package is opened and change colour using a traffic light system to indicate whether the contents are still safe to eat.

It is hoped the smart labels will cut food waste by preventing customers throwing out food they wrongly believe has gone off.

A typical Brit throws away around £700 worth of edible food a year, often because they are being over-cautious with open packets in the fridge.

Professor Andrew Mills invented the technology for the ‘smart plastic’ when he worked at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and has spent five years refining the idea. The labels were launched on 28th February by Insignia Technologies, who say they have had interest from retailers and supermarket chains in the UK, France and America. Each one will add around 2p to the cost of a packet of food.

Experts are also working on similar systems for fresh fruit and vegetables, food and drink in jars or bottles, and cosmetics such as mascara or contact lens solution.

Prof Mills, now a professor in Materials Chemistry at Queen’s University, Belfast,

said: ‘It is a huge development for consumers and for the food industry. It has got real potential.

‘We have all gone to the fridge and thought “I can’t remember how long ago I opened that”, and we err on the side of caution and tend to throw it away.

‘This indicator is focused on how long the package has been open. This is vital to prevent good food being thrown away. It would reassure you that it’s only been open for a day, and it is fine to eat.

Anything that makes a dent into food waste is a good thing - the levels of food waste are unsustainable. It’s also brilliant for frozen foods that have been defrosted, as then the best before date doesn’t apply. This has the potential to make a very big difference to the way we use packaged goods, whether foods or other materials.’

The labels work with foods that have been packaged in a modified atmosphere using carbon dioxide (CO2).

Baked goat cheese marinara

INGREDIENTS Salt & Pepper 1/4lb Green Beans 14 fresh asparagus, ends snapped off 2tbsp olive oil 1 spring onion, trimmed and slices 3 cloves garlic, finely grated 1 piece (1”) ginger root, grated 3 slender carrots cut in thin 2” matchsticks 1 small fennel bulb, white part thinly sliced ¼ lb sugar snap peas 1 cup green peas 1 small courgette, cut into matchsticks 1 tbsp brown sugar ¼ cup water 2 tbsp chopped parsley 1 tbsp chopped basil

METHOD Set your grill to high. Brush each side of the bread slices with olive oil and place on a baking sheet. Toast each side until golden brown.

INGREDIENTS SERVES 4 2/3 cup tomato pasta sauce (e.g. Ragu) 4oz goat cheese 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped 10 – 12 slices French bread 1 tbsp olive oil

METHOD In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the green beans for 2 minutes. Drain and rinse them with cold water.

Cut the asparagus stalks into 1-inch pieces; reserve the tips. In a large frying pan over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Cook the onion for 1 minute. Add the garlic and ginger and cook 1 minute more. Add the carrots, fennel, and asparagus stalks. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 4 minutes.

Add the sugar snaps, peas, courgette, asparagus tips, sugar, water, salt, and pepper. Cover and simmer for 9 minutes.

Remove from the heat. Sprinkle with parsley and basil.

Add more salt and pepper, if you like.

Pour tomato sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Slice the goat cheese in half and place in the centre of the tomato sauce.

Bake under the grill for 4 – 6 minutes or until the goat cheese is soft and slightly golden.

Sprinkle the mixture with fresh basil before serving.

INGREDIENTS - SERVES 4 250g plain (all-purpose) flour 2 tsp baking powder 25g (4 1/2 oz) unsalted butter, softened 4 ripe bananas, mashed 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla extract 250g sugar 175g good-quality chocolate chips

Heat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

In a large bowl sift the baking powder and flour.

Using another bowl, Mix together the butter, sugar, banana, eggs, vanilla extract and choccy chips in.

Add to the dry ingredients and stir well but be careful that you don’t over mix.

Pour the bread batter into a nonstick 19 x 11 cm loaf tin and bake in the oven for around 1 hr 15 mins.

Leave the bread to cool in the tin for around 5 mins. Then leave on a wire rack to cool further.

The Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group are busy rehearsing for their next show which will be on Friday 17th May 2013 at the Theatre in San Fulgencio. It’s called MOVIES AND MUSICALS and will hopefully include many of your favourite songs and memories from the beginning of movies through to the Oscar winning musicals of today.

We are always trying to encourage new people to join our enthusiastic group so, if you can feel a little something stirring inside you when you are reading this, maybe there is a budding talent inside you that is just waiting to burst out. COMM U NITY NE W S A Glorious Night of Music and Drama

Once again, the cast of “Opera San Miguel” excelled themselves with their performances of Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana”.

Opera San Miguel is a week long workshop in which the performers, many coming from England for the occasion, along with local singers, work each day studying the music, drama and dance, culminating in two performances in the packed theatre of the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel.

This was a great achievement in so short a time, for the Musical Director Tom Pargeter and the Stage Director Katy Pargeter as well as all those involved.

The soloists, Paulina Rossi, Mary Coffield, Melanie Roberts, Alan Phelps and Bill Lewis all gave exciting and dramatic performances. The whole opera was, as usual, faultlessly accompanied

by Jean Hancock and the dance scene thoughtfully choreographed by Susan Wilson.

The one act opera, which lasts for just over an hour takes place on Easter Sunday in a Sicilian village in 1890 and is a story of love, jealousy and revenge. The simple scene of the town square outside the church is magically transformed by the appearance of the local villagers in their brightly coloured traditional costumes, making their way to Mass.

As the story unfolds, the glorious Easter Hymn beautifully performed by the villagers can be heard from within the church. But, outside, arguments are taking place between the two rival gentlemen and after the congregation enter the square and sing a rousing drinking song, a duel is arranged between the two men and the happiness of Easter turns to tragedy.

No doubt the plans for next year’s Opera Week are on the drawing board which we all look forward to.

Zoo lets the lions out A dozy zoo keeper caused panic when two lions escaped after he left the doors to their enclosure open while he cleaned it.

Armed police and wildlife experts evacuated the zoo in China’s Chongqing city while they stalked the big cats - one male and one female - for three hours.

“We found the female first and subdued her with a tranquilliser gun but the male took longer to find and bring back,” said a zoo spokesman.

“They both recovered quickly and are no worse off for their adventure,” he added.

Officials have apologised to locals and customers for the drama.

“You can’t blame the lions. It was human error and they naturally took advantage of it,” said one.

Probe into police dog’s statement

Police officers in the West Midlands could be in the dog house after a police dog apparently filed a witness statement.

The brief statement, on behalf of police dog Peach, read: “I chase him. I bite him. Bad man.

He tasty. Good boy.

Good boy Peach.”

The ‘statement’ was signed at the bottom with a print of the Alsatian’s pawmark.

It was reportedly written in response to a barrage of requests from the Crown Prosecution Service for an account from PC Peach on a crime, the Daily Mail reports.

Officers are said to have become frustrated after they continually told the CPS that Peach was a dog.

But it seems the joke report may have consequences as the force is now being investigated.

“The matter will be investigated,” DCI Julian Harper, from West Midlands Police, told Huffington Post.

Quesada Golf Society Today we played at Alicante Winners on the day

G.C. for this time of the year the course was in reasonable condition, although the greens were very tricky and most of our members found them difficult to gauge the speed from green to green.

Not a good day for scoring with the weather, high winds and rain made Alicante more difficult course than it normally is, the men’s tees were only 10 metres in front of the white tees on most holes.

I must say that on arrival we were greeted with a hot cup of coffee and a toasted baguette which went down well by our members, as always with Alicante the buggies were ready and we got away at the right tee times.

Today was a special day as it was for one of our trophies, The Alex Starkey trophy, Alex was one of the founder members of the society who sadly passed away some years back and Alicante was his favourite course, so we play there every year for the trophy.

Winner of the Alex Starkey Trophy with 26 point was Les Catt, 2nd was our only lady member playing Sue Smith with 25 points and 3rd on count back also with 25 points Tony White.

TMGS Match Report

27th February 2013.

Our monthly visit to VillaMartin saw us teeing off before the sun had a chance to get out of bed and into his knickers. He also forgot to tell Horatio he’s been sacked…because there he was again, blowing away to his hearts content.

A full house saw TMGS teeing off at Hole 10, with clouds threatening and those threats turning into showers and more showers as the day went on. I will tell you how cold it was, one of our Norwegian members donned not just one layer of warm clothes, but his rain suit too…and he is used to playing in brass monkeys.

The wet and cold weather did affect the scores and the abilities of players not used to playing in the cold, apart from one player who had sought the help of our PGA Professional, Joe Dean. It appears that age has finally reached Richard “Quack Quack” Wale and the arthritis in his pinkie caused him problems and to which Joe fixed and that fix has

been rewarded by a nice little cut in handicap. It seems that the baseball grip, normally associated with little boys works for Quack Quack and his 39 points, the top score on the day, securing the winners spot in the Gold Division. John Mellor secured 2nd spot with an excellent 35 points, normally good enough to win. 3rd place went to Dutchie Theo Boelhouwer with 32 points.

The Silver Division found the conditions a tad harder as it only took 29 points for Audrey Mellor to go one place better than her “Old Man” and claim the winners spot. In second place was Ally “Hernia” Murray with 27 points and in 3rd place was Committee member and longtime Society servant, Sheila Dean with 25 points, just pushing out Alex Goslan on the count-back system.

NTP’s were won by Captain Alan Rickers, Mike Freeman, Rod Leonard and Les Wilton.

Two late goals all but end Fairwayz GS Okay, here’s how our annual Saint’s promotion charge trip to Benidorm went. Day

Costa were looking to continue from last weeks win at home with a tough trip to Cox in search of back to back wins. Costa got off to a good start in the opening minutes and had several chances to take the lead with Patrick Bass and Gummi Gudmundsson coming close with efforts. It took Cox some 15 minutes to get going and when they did they to played some neat two touch football and managed to hold possession well and caused Costa a few problems.

Costa decided to switch their left and right winger’s Augusto and Broadway over and tried to play with four attack minded players with licence to shoot to try and create an opening. On 38 minutes the deadlock was broken and it was Costa who started a with a move down the right which saw 8 or 9 passes involving 6 Costa players being involved in quick one and two touch passing and Charley Frost grabbing the finish to put Costa 1 - 0 up just before the break.

Second half started to get a bit heated between the two sides with several players from both teams collecting cards due to frustration caused by a referee who constantly changed his decisions when put under pressure from the home manager & crowd.

Costa had to dig deep and

defend well and did this with fine displays for the second week running from Quest, Nicholas, Mint , Cockroft and Marshall in Goal. Up front Bass & Gudmundsson were always a threat with constant supply of of chances from the hard work of midfield duo Lawton and Frost who both had good games in the center of midfield. Costa did manage to score a goal when Bass despite being hacked down managed to place the ball into net and when the referee blew his whistle the visitors thought may be the referee wanted a spot kick instead, but amazingly he rewarded a free kick to Cox instead. Costa were nearly undone in the final minute when a Cox player dived in the Costa area but luckily the referee didn’t buy the dive but he did reward a free kick which was defended well and this was the last chance of the game as the referee blew up with the score remaning 1 - 0 to the boys from Orihuela Costa and the 3 points in the bag.

Orihuela C.F 2-1 C.F Sporting de San Fulgencio Despite leading for 70 minutes, San Ful came up short in a must win game against 4th placed Orihuela.

Jose Bonmati’s second half sending off was a turning point in the contest.

Both teams set out to win the game and it showed when Joaquin Rodriguez was shown a yellow card early on for some feisty challenges and talking a bit too much for the ref’s liking! The Saints had the better of the opening 20 minutes, first Braulio Garcia had an effort deflected over then his namesake, Victor Garcia saw a free header well kept out by the host’s keeper.

Moments later Orihuela could’ve taken the lead, but Manuel Llopis did well to hold onto a goalbound strike. The end-to-end theme continued, a well hit free-kick scraped the post for Orihuela, but Llopis had it covered. Then, after another chance was wasted by the home side, Victor broke the deadlock with a beautifully placed shot into the bottom corner after Marco Aurelio’s free-kick was deflected into his path.

The lead was almost doubled immediately when Aaron Lopez was put through, but the centreback couldn’t emulate his partner in defence as he pulled his shot wide.

San Fulgencio were in the driving seat, but Orihuela aren’t 4th in the league for nothing!

There was a frantic start to the second period, the Saints could, and maybe should, have doubled their lead, but Braulio was denied by a smart reaction save. At the other end, Gary Williams intervened with a last ditch block to mantain San Ful’s lead then Llopis denied Orihuela with a fine pointblank save.

rushed his shot and the keeper gratefully picked up his weak effort. Another glorious opening was wasted by the Saints minutes later.

A stunning move involving Marco, Braulio and Bonmati ended with the latter hitting the inside of the post from edge of the six-yard box.

That would be Jose Bonmati’s last contribution to the game.

As tempers began to fray, the tall midfielder was sent off for kicking out at an opponent.

The game turned in the form side’s favour and they grabbed an equaliser from a set-piece. The corner was a poor one, but it evaded everyone and ended up in the back of the net, much to the dismay of assistant manager, Claudio Fabian Arturi.

Five minutes later, the Saint’s despair was compounded after a swift counter attack concluded with an easy finish for Orihuela’s number 15.

Victor had the last chance of the game, but his acrobatic effort was well off target.

Our next game is against Benferri C.F at home, next Sunday at 12.00.

1. Thursday 28th Feb, 23 of us arrived to play at Villaitana Campo Levante course, right next to Terra Mittica.

1st tee was 11:45, at this point the weather looked threatening! Then it turned catastrophic, but being rough tough golfers we must have battled on for at least another five minutes.

Black clouds closed in, the pounding rain turned to hailstones the size of cricket balls, (well 5mm at least!) thunder and lightning raked the skies, but we continued with a good old fashioned English stiff upper lip, which by that time i think mine had gone rigid. Then the rockets went up signalling for us to leave the course.

We didn’t want to at first, but not wanting to cause any trouble we evacuated the course to the warm confines of the clubhouse, where stories of playing in worse conditions were in abundance. (Dramatic eh?)

So, unfortunately we had to retire to our hotel in Benidorm, where once we changed into casuals, were forced by our tour leader to go and sample the bars for the afternoon. He is very forceful. Such a shame

those that don’t know La Serena we have a golf course that has more than it’s fair share on the course where 16 holes will test anyone skills and if the wind is blowing well look out, because you have lots of problems.

With a large number playing half played off the 1st. and the rest off the 10th. Yes lovely day with plenty of sunshine just a gentle breeze and warm enough after an hour to discard the jumpers but how that changed after a couple hours because we then had some heavy rain and gale force winds, luckily the rain stopped after 20 minutes but the wind continued to plague us.

However, with all the problems we had to deal with it was good to see that that some did manage to break the 30 point barrier. So well done Bernard Ball, Geoff Betts, Sue Owens, Peter Kerr and David Winder.

You cannot play La Serena without having a little wager on the most ball lost in the water on the day and while the total lost amounted to 120 with the most going to Peter Cowd with 11. However, Geff Betts with the best score of the day of 38 points

Los Dolses Ten Pin Bowling League Matches played February 26th Team Finland made it 8 wins in a row, with a very easy 80 victory against Mixers. Top scorer for T.F. was Jarmo Peltanen with a 636 hcp series.

Another draw for Bar Mosquito, this week they took a bite out of Hall y Day’s title hopes, as they shared the points 4-4 with them. The B.M skipper John Tennant had his 4 best scores including a 215 scratch game.

After 2 defeats, Split Happens bounced back with an 8-0 win over Bandeleros. Top scorer for S.H. was Kjell Monsen with a 645 hcp series.

Los Bandidos moved back to 3rd place in the league, with a 6-2 win over Cornish Pride.

Top scorer for L.B. was Barry Tolson with a 577 scratch

Highest scratch game of the week, a 253, was bowled

by Heikki Suomi, for Caballo Negro, as his team drew 4-4 with Lucky Strike.

Los Lobos lost again this week, but only just. They took 3 points off of Splash in a very close match. Top bowler for L.L. with his 4 highest scores of the season, including a 589 hcp series, was Ron Jewll.

The result of the night was the 6-2 win for Crazy Pinz over Carp-r-us. That win for C.P. came after a run of 10 straight defeats. Top scorer for C.P. was Ingrid Wilms with a 588 hcp series.

It was also the first night of the league’s, Easter Egg competition. This year it is sponsored by, The MED bistro & bar, at Urb’ El Raso, and 29 tickets were won, to put into the draw.

After the postponement at the weekend of the Cartagena game, which will now be played on 17 March, and is the last league game of the season.

This coming weekend is also the last home game of the league season against Lorca at 17.00, and hoping to get the double over them this season. This will be the second double of the season over league rivals. So far this season only the two Murcia teams have beaten us, so hoping to keep that record in tact this coming weekend.

It is not the end of the rugby for Orihuela RFC as we have touring teams coming over with the first been Barnet Elisabethians RFC to play the U18’s as well as San Javier’s U18’s.

This coming weekend we are back televising the live 6 Nations rugby matches at the rugby bar in Rojales, The Steakhouse, used to be Tylers Bar. Starting on Friday with the U20’s England v Italy or Scotland v Wales. On Saturday, Quins v Bath in the LV Cup at 13.00 followed by Scotland v Wales at 15.30,

finally Ireland v France. On Sunday is Sale v Saracens at 13.30 in the LV Cup, and the final 6 Nations game of the weekend England v Italy at 16.00. Looking forward to seeing another good turn out down there this weekend.

I am down at the Moncayo Market on Saturday, with all the rugby branded clothing, so come down and get all your shirts for the rest of the 6 Nations games for the above games.

Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15.

FC TORREVIEJA - 0-0 DRAW BUT ANYTHING BUT BORING Last Sunday Torry hosted 6th placed Villarreal C a team full of technically proficient and well coached youngsters hoping to make the grade. Villarreal’s away form was better than their home form and they had won 7, drawn 3 and lost 3 on their travels coming into the game.

Ros, Sergio (Patri, 56 ‘), Manu Amores, Villanueva (Mati, 89’) Gasch (Jose Manuel, 80 ‘).

The match was again played at the Nelson Mandela stadium and kicked-off, on a cold and overcast late afternoon, in front of a crowd of just over 300.

Villarreal started the better and controlled proceedings in the first 10 minutes or so with possession football. As the game wore on Torry started to get a foothold on the game and became the more threatening with quciker more incisive raids rather than the more patient build up of the opposition. Some of the passing and movement of Torry was a joy to watch and they un-nerved the Villarreal rearguard breaching it on a number of occasions but the unfortunately the final delivery was not quite on par with the build up play. The main threat was coming from the speedy Manu Amores who had a 10 minute spell which one fan

Torry lay 14th in the table 4 points outside the relegation zone and at needed to get something out of the game.

Torry had no suspensions but the injury list is starting to give cause for concern with no less than 4 regulars being sidelined.

Out through injury were Abel, JuanFran, Koeman and Luis Carlos. The manager again had to put out a bit of a makeshift side with the bench being occupied by youngsters.

described as being “just like watching Messi”. I wouldn’t quite say that but he was good. First he burst down the wing and delivered a pinpoint cross which Sergio should have buried into the net but instead headed the ball over the top. He then jinked past 3 men on the edge of the area and made a slide rule pass to but Villanueva in but the offside flag went up somewhat surprisingly. The best was still to come when he drove forward from just inside the opposition half at the heart of the Villarreal defence which stood off as if mesmerised and found himself with a “one on one” but didn’t get enough on his shot on target which was blocked by the combination of keeper and defender. The closest that either side came to a goal was from the Villarreal no.11 with a magnificent rocket of a shot from 30 yards which struck the angle of post and bar and thundered back into to play with Javi Tur but a spectator. Another longe range effort from the opposition no.10, which was dipping into the top of the net, produced a fine save from Javi Tur. The half-time whistle blew to signal the end of a thoroughly entertaining first half. The second-half didn’t quite live up to the first-half and was, in the main dominated by Villarreal who through their no.10 took control and pushed Torry back.

Torry appeared content to sit back and get men behind the

ball and soak up the pressure and try and hit Villarreal on the break. Torry held firm with a few anxious moments notably when one of the Villarreal subs left Dani for dead and Javi Tur came out to make an excellent block. Manu Amores then dispossessed a Villarreal defender just outside the Villarreal penalty area and had a clean run on goal but the refs whistle blew for an adjudged foul on the opposition defender with the Torry players and the crowd at one in their condemnation of the decision. As the game reached its conclusion the Villarreal pressure intensified but Torry weathered the storm and held out to register a 0-0 draw in a game which was never boring but highly entertaining especially in the first half. Jorge and Cuco Ros picked up yellow cards for Torry.

After the third draw in a row, Torry remain in 14th in the table still only 5 points outside the relegation zone. On Sunday Torry make the long trip to Castellon who are in 4th place in the table and battling for a play-off place. It will be a difficult game for Torry but lets hope some of the injured players return for Torry and they can get something out of the game.

ALGORFA 1 v. DAYA NUEVA 3 INFANTILS G10s DAYA’S SECOND HALF DISPLAY TOO MUCH FOR ALGORFA This was a game that Daya had to win to keep alive their very slim title hopes. They started well and from a corner on two minutes Luis David’s powerful header was well saved by the home side’s keeper. Algorfa came more into the game and gave Daya’s defence some awkward moments. As the half wore on the home side exerted pressure and pushed Daya back into their own half.

The visitors were restricted to the occasional breakaway. On 30 minutes Algorfa took the lead when from a free kick they scored a well taken goal.

The home side were well worth their lead and looked likely to score again. Daya did manage a succession of corners as the half drew to a close but could not capitalise on this pressure.

So 1 - 0 at half time and the home side certainly deserved their 1 - 0 lead. The visitors were desperately in need of one of coach Paco’s inspirational half-time talks ! Just 5 minutes into the second half Daya went close but the ball was cleared off the line. Just seconds later though the visitors were back on level terms when Manuel scrambled the ball over the line for 1 - 1. It was all Daya now with Algorfa hanging on desperately.

Daya took

the lead on 54 minutes when David started and finished a good move. Could the visitors now put the game to bed with another goal.

It certainly seemed this way when Manuel scored his second and Daya’s third on 58 minutes. Surely now the visitors would go on to win the game. There wasn’t much coming from Algorfa now and what there was, Daya’s defence gobbled up. With a couple of minutes to go Jose was clean through on the Algorfa goal but shot agonisingly wide, it didn’t matter though as the final whistle went soon after. So a 3 - 1 victory to Daya following a great second half performance.

Just what did coach Paco say to his players at half time ??

It was a little disappointing especially in the second half when the game was going against them, to see a number of the Algorfa players rolling about on the ground following innocuous tackles trying to con the referee. The match official was not at his best today but nothing was going to stop Daya winning as their second half performance would have swept most teams away. Man of the Match, Manuel for his two goals, David ran him close though with a superb second half display.

C.D. ALGAR 6 MAZARRON F.C. 0

A woeful performance by Mazarron FC ended in a deserved 6-0 thrashing at the hands of C.D. Algar. With only the suspended Jose Ruben missing from the usual starting line up, Mazarron were outclassed in every department in what was undoubtedly the worst display of the season.

Mazarron’s defensive weaknesses on either flank were exposed as early as the 15th minute when Pepelu was forced to bring down an Algar forward in the penalty area and Antonio blasted home the twice taken spot kick despite the valiant efforts of Mazarron keeper, Jose Iker.

Three minutes later Cecilio’s cross was headed against the crossbar by Alfonso. Then, after 27 minutes Barrachina’s cross to the far post was volleyed towards goal by Panocha only to see the Algar goalkeeper make a good save.

Algar increased their lead after 38 minutes when a through ball found the left winger who, despite looking suspiciously offside, put in an excellent cross for Francisco to fire home. Then , three minutes before half time Hugo Alvarez scored when he outpaced Matt Clarke and shot past the despairing dive of Iker to make the score 3-0.

The second half was virtually one-way traffic with Mazarron non-existent as an attacking force. Santi was caught in

possession after 55 minutes and from the resulting cross Alvares scored his second of the game. Almost immediately a similar mistake by Diego went unpunished when the shot from an Algar forward sailed wide. However, it was 5-0 after 65 minutes when, with the visiting defence standing and appealing for offside, Jose ran from just inside the Mazarron half and coolly slotted the ball past Iker.

Mazarron did manage a shot on goal after 67 minutes but Panocha’s left foot shot on the turn was easily saved. After 75 minutes, Algar made it 6-0, again from the penalty spot, when Alfonso was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the area although it appeared that the offence had taken place outside the box.

Mazarron’s recent performances have been worrying, with only one win in seven games and the defence, which for so long this season, has been so solid is now looking extremely fragile.

Torrevieja hosts Regional Competition.

This Saturday Piroska Rideg represented Club Natacion Torrevieja in the Infantil and older (14 years plus) Regional P50 competition hosted by the sports centre, “Palacio de Deportes Infanta Cristina”, Torrevieja.

Ten regional clubs met with 108 swimmers participating in a full days programme of events.

Swimmers had to achieve qualifying times in order to participate.

Piroska Rideg from Club Natacion Torrevieja, participated in the maximum number of events.

In the morning session Piroska made a new PB and 1st position for her age in the 100m Butterfly (1:20:50). Back in the afternoon Piroska had

a difficult task with 3 events within a hour. First was 100m Backstroke and Piroska gained 2nd position in her age group with time of 1:20:63. She then went back for the 200m Medley and gained 1st position for her age (2:53:45) followed quickly by the 100m Freestyle 1:15:10. Teammates supported Piroska throughout the day and next week will see the club travel to La Nucia for another competition.

those often-heard optimistic words…..”I think it’s trying to brighten !!”

Well, whether it was trying or not….the painful fact is – it didn’t succeed. A wet and windswept band of golfers were delighted to land in the clubhouse and hand in a bunch of soggy cards, a good few accompanied by those immortal initials often muttered through clenched and chattering teeth… “N.R. !!”

As is often the case under such conditions – there’s always a few who manage to shoot unbelievable scores and this day was no exception. The guests showed many of us regulars how to play in adverse conditions with Alan Gilbert coming 2nd with 31 points and Geoff Phillips taking top slot in the visitors’ division with a very commendable 32.

Three of the four par 3’s yielded NTP prizes with just the tricky 3rd remaining a virgin

green. The spoils were won

by John Drakesmith (6th), Ron Stenhouse (13th) and Steve Fleet (16th).

Silver division saw Paula Andersen (28) in 4th, Ray Ewins (28 c/b) in 3rd, John Aitchinson (29) in 2nd with top spot going to Rob Stevens with his tally of 30.

Even better scores in the gold division saw Eric Strachen (33) in 4th, Shay Cunningham (34) in 3rd, John Osborne (35) in 2nd and very much “on-form” Stevie Fleet taking 1st with a magnificent 39 points. Great golf in grim conditions, well done to all the prize-winners!

A cunning scouser (is there any other type?) chose not to declare a “No return” and ended up with a fine bottle of wine as the “Abacus” nominee….well done to Paul Cobain!

ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen For the 8th round of the Abbey Angling Cup we fished the Embalsa de Pedrera on the 26th February.

The way the water is dropping by the summer the levels will be lower than ever, about five or six years ago the island on the match point was high and dry and anglers were able to park there cars on it to fish a match, and it could possibly be even lower than that this year.

There was a cold north easterly wind blowing and the water temperature had fallen over the last 3 days from 12 to 9 degrees, which made the fishing hard going with only 4 out of 15 anglers weighing in.

The Barbel seem to have been put off feeding by the cold weather with only the Carp responding to maggot.

We also had a surprise visit from the Suprona who checked all the match men’s licences which were all present and correct, as it is compulsory to have the appropriate licences to be a member of all the

local fishing clubs. They then checked on other people who were fishing and who presumably did not have the required licences and were asked to leave the water.

LA FINCA WELCOMES SMGS Let’s all hope that the cold and miserable weather we’ve endured in the last week of February can be taken as a “chilly cheerio” to the wintry months, hopefully followed by a warm welcome to the forthcoming spring ones.

To feel some warm sunshine on our backs and even let the legs have an outing in the fresh air would be something of an experience….it does feel like it’s been a long and cold winter. In fact, I’m writing this on the last day of February to a background of thunder and lightning accompanied by heavy rain and the odd hail-storm, roll on summertime!!

Wet, windy and wild would be the only way to describe the conditions awaiting some forty of us at our monthly visit to La Finca. Wet gear and brollies were the order of the day right from the off as intermittent squally showers kept thwarting

RODS AND REELS Again this week, the venue was changed due to inclement weather. The match originally set for the Pedrera, was changed to Nancy´s or Sweetwater. Why it is called this is beyond me as the rubbish in it is incredible!!!. I was pegged next to one of the incoming drains and stuck against the chain which holds back rubbish was a dead dog. Some people are unbelievable??.

The weather was atrocious with strong winds and plenty of rain.

The match was the last in the winter championship, which started in September 2012, where has that time gone!!!!!!.

At the end of the match the drain next to me started to flow ( I mean flow ) and within 20 to 30 minutes the Sweetwater had risen some 12 inches or so.

Although there were 5 “did not weighs” there were some good weights.

Top Rods on the day 1st Terry ( Swing E´m ) Screen fishing the feeder using maggot, with 14.12 kilo´s.

2nd Stan ( The Man ) Roberts fishing the pole using corn and maggot with 12.00 kilo´s.

3rd Dave ( Yours Truly ) Hoare fishing the pole using maggot with 10.98 kilo´s.

BY STEVE HIBBERD Maples started the week with an excellent 12-2 home victory over La Siesta Apollos, moving them up to 4th in SABA league div 1. Here’s the 5 victorious rinks: S Stead, A Goodfellow, B Pocock 23-12.

J Westall, S Heath, S Westall 24-9. J Clements, S Hibberd, D O’Sullivan 20-11. M Mackay, P Goodfellow, M Fryatt 24-18.

B Tomlin, F Tilley, V Mahomet 21-10. Not good news for our other top flight side Sycamores, for another defeat, this time by 12-2 at San Miguel, has all but sealed relegation for them.

G Bater, P Lockley & skip J Parker, came up trumps, winning their rink 18-13. In div 2, Chestnuts travelled to Emerald Isles, where they picked up a very creditable 8 points from hosts Moonrakers.

Mr Bond would have proud of this little lot: B Norris, L Morris, P Heyes 25-11. M Dewar, T Coombs, C Dewar 21-14. H Langlois, T Lawton, G Inwood 15-12.

In the fed 4s, Bulls hosted previous league leaders Country Bowls Clarets. Although 2 rinks lost by 4 shots each, a superb 23-6 victory by B & B Sims, M Veale & S Cantley, was enough to secure a pleasing 4-4 draw.

Twas a case of the Bears not coming out to play on rainy Thurs. Makes me think that they are typical of the Koala variety, as opposed to the more resilient Grizzly type!

Our winter league side were at home to Quesada, but alas went down by 1 point to 9. Only the rink of Bill Sims, W Latham, L Greenland & B Latham salvaged some pride, with their hard fought 17-17 draw.

Both the Berleen rinks lost, leaving them pointless! Oh, and by the way, if anyone has been offended by any comments in this or previous reports, then I accept no responsibility, for they belong exclusively to Greenlands Bowls Club - isn’t that right Bobbie?

by Jim Gavin, Frauke Gerlach & Julie Rushton between 70 – 75 mins. respectively. John Pascoe dropped out at 6K, as arranged with his “back-up” team.

Both the Half Marathon and the nominal “10K” races started together at 10:30 am in cool, windy conditions this year.

With totals of near 950 starters for the longer event & over 800 for the actual 10.749m course, the first couple of kilometres were very congested.

Running Wild A.C. had just 2 members in the Half Marathon.

Ingrid Patursson registered a 1hr 54´ 56” finish in her Vet `D´category for 4th place while Peter James continued to improve with a time of 2hrs 06´ 36”.

A further 8 members entered

Footnote : Keith Richards (VM 40) recently entered the tough, “Ras Cors Caron” Half Marathon in Tregaron, Mid Wales, which was made more difficult by the icy winds & boggy surfaces.

He was disappointed to miss his target of 1hr 30 mins (by just 10 secs.) but still a pb, achieving 5th in his age group.
