MORE FOOD, LESS WASTE...

The Ministro de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente, Miguel Arias Cañete, has introduced his Estrategia ‘Más alimento, menos desperdicio’, ‘More food, less waste’, which aims to limit losses and food wastage. He outlined the five major areas upon which this strategy will be based. He said it will ‘promote transparency, dialogue and coordination between agents in the food chain and public administrations and will develop coordinated actions that contribute to promote a change in attitudes, work systems and governance to limit waste and reduce environmental pressures.’ The five major areas are: 1 Performance studies. To ‘correct deficiencies regarding information about the amount of waste, where and how it is produced, and the reasons for it.’ 2 Development of best practice guidelines. The development of guides to good practice disseminated to farmers, businesses and chain operators. The development of a Web site for the promotion of social responsibility towards this major problem, with a special focus on education and awareness in schools. 3 Review of regulatory issues. To work in collaboration with suppliers to identify those rules that represent an obstacle to the unnecessary discard of food, particularly in terms of quality standards relating to appearance, best before dates and expiration. 4 Cooperation. Between companies, organisations and associations along the food chain. In this area, the Minister has included the promotion of agreements with food banks ‘to maximize the redistribution of food’, and the promotion of small-scale producers who operate farm-gate sales. Also the development and implementation of audits within companies, in order to evaluate the efficiency of food waste

Sport

management and identify areas for improvement. 5 Development of new technologies. Finally, to prioritise new technologies, promoting projects to improve efficiency, boosting aid lines for innovative projects, and creating new jobs. Miguel Arias Cañete continued: ‘We will create a Monitoring Committee, composed of the Directors and key stakeholders, who will report regularly on the degree of implementation of the proposed actions, the difficulties encountered, the results achieved and the corrective actions that have to be introduced. This Strategy ‘More food, less waste’ is the result of a commitment made by Arias Cañete in Parliament, and the targets set by the European Parliament which required all Member States to develop a Plan of Action against food waste by 2013. The Minister explained that ‘we all have a commitment to society, to the needy, and also with the effective use of resources and care of the environment. The waste occurs in all phases - bad shopping habits, consumption and management of food, inappropriate size or packaging, disruption to the refrigeration chain.’ The European Commission estimates that annually 89 million tons of food, which equates to 179 kilos per capita, are lost or wasted, which represents, each year, between 30% and 50% of edible food being wasted. The biggest waste produced, 42%, is by the consumer. Manufacturing processes account for 39%. However, in this second case, the losses are largely unavoidable, since they are due to product contents which are not part of the final food Spain is sixth in the list of food wasteful countries. Italy is the best, with only 8.8 tons of food waste per year, followed by Poland, France, the Netherlands and Germany.

GOVERNMENT LOOKS TO IMPROVE CHILD WELFARE IN RESPONSE TO UNICEF REQUESTS

Far-reaching changes are to be made under the Government’s Childhood and Adolescence Strategic Plan 2013-2016. Some of the changes have been made in response to requests from UNICEF, though they will all require an alteration in the existing Civil Code and the Domestic Violence Law. The recommendations will include methods of safeguarding children in domestic violence cases in a bid to prevent them from becoming direct or indirect victims. The minimum age at which a person can legally marry is to be set at 16. There is an anomaly in that the current minimum age is 18, unless the person has left home, or has their parents’ consent in which case they can marry at 14. This loophole will be closed, with an across the board limit minimum age limit of 16 years of age. The minimum age at which a young person can consent to sexual relations will also go up, but the exact age has not yet been decided. At present, a child aged 13 or over can legally have sex, even with an adult over 18, although if the minor then claims he or she did not consent and there is no proof that they did, the adult can face paedophilia charges. The Strategic Plan will also include measures to support families facing poverty, and measures to strengthen protection against cyber-bullying, online grooming and child pornography. Also the adoption process will be streamlined; babies and children under three will be able to be adopted immediately rather than having to spend a set period of time in a care home before an adoptive family is found for them.

Earthquake of 4.3 on the Richter scale in Lorca causes widespread panic

An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale has terrified residents in Lorca (Murcia) who are still reliving the horrors of a quake reaching 5.6 nearly two years ago. Detected at 04.27hrs yesterday (Thursday), the epicentre of the quake was in the nearby village of La Paca, which comes under the jurisdiction of Lorca, reaching number III on the Intensity scale – around the middle

– and 11 kilometres underground.

According to the National Geological Institute, the tremor was felt in the whole of the north of Lorca, the city centre itself, and in the nearby towns of Aledo, Totana, Cehegín and Archena, and even just over the border in Almería, the province immediately south of the Murcia Region. The Institute says this was an aftershock of a quake of 2.7 on the Richter scale at

SPAIN’S Under-26’s have stopped looking for work

Over 860,000 young people on the dole say they have simply given up looking for jobs, because they no longer believe they will find one. According to a report by ThinkSpain, research by ASEmpleo says those who were aged 25 and under when they were made redundant between the end of 2007 and late 2012 and have not found work since do not believe they will ever get a job again. The number of people in this age-group who are out of work has gone up by over a third in this five-year period. Cantabria is the region with the most under-26s who lost their jobs and have not worked since in this time, and even in

the Canary Islands with the lowest level of loss of active inhabitants of this age-group, the number has still gone down by 29.5 per cent. In all, 55.1 per cent of 25-year-olds and under who want to, and are able to, work, are unemployed, and nearly half of these – 45.6 per cent – have not worked in over a year. And in 2012 alone, Spain lost 1.33 million workers aged under 26. An average of seven in 10 people of this age are registered as unemployed in the Canary Islands, the region with the worst statistics, and 4.6 in 10 in the Basque Country, the region with the lowest youth jobless figures.

around 23.30hrs on Wednesday, at eight kilometres underground, and that a further aftershock of 1.6 on the Richter scale was felt at 05.33hrs with its epicentre just to the north-west of Aledo.

Emergency services received a flood of calls and the city council has posted information on its website as to how to stay safe in the event of an earthquake. So far, no reports of injury or damage to property have been registered. On May 11, 2011, a quake reaching 5.6 on the Richter scale – an aftershock of a much smaller one – destroyed the city, leaving thousands homeless, hundreds injured and nine dead, including an eleven-year-old boy. Earthquakes are a regular feature in Spain, particularly in the Murcia and Almería areas which sit on a fault line, but the majority reach no higher than 2 or 3 on the Richter scale. At this level, most people feel the ground move suddenly and occasionally suffer a crack in a window or ornaments falling off a shelf, but the intensity of vibrations is little more than a heavy lorry driving past. In March 2006, a quake of 4.5 on the

Richter scale in Casas Bajas, a village of 200 inhabitants in the province of Valencia on the Teruel border, caused tiles to fall off roofs and panic to break out among residents, but no injuries or real property damage occurred. And in summer 2011, over 8,000 earthquakes were registered in El Hierro, one of the Canary Islands, caused by an underwater volcano erupting. Volcanic activity has reawakened on the island and at least 2,000 quakes have been recorded in less than a week, although none over 4.6 on the Richter scale and most of such low intensity that inhabitants would not have felt them. Neither in summer 2011 nor in the past week have authorities been concerned for inhabitants’ safety, with the worst of the damage being rockfalls in a tunnel near the village of La Restinga, largely due to the epicentre being between 12 and 20 kilometres below ground. In the case of the devastating Lorca earthquake two years ago, the epicentre was only a kilometre below the surface, which heightened its intensity.

Duchess of Palma to testify over Nóos Institute corruption case

King Juan Carlos’ daughter, the Infanta Cristina is finally thought to have been involved in the infamous Nóos Case surrounding her husband, Iñaki Urdangarín, and will be called to testify in court on April 27 at 10.00hrs. Her summons comes just days after Urdangarín’s former co-director, Diego Torres, sent new emails to the judge in charge of the money-laundering and corruption trial which hinted at the involvement of the Duchess of Palma in the activities of the Nóos Institute, which was set up as a non-profitmaking organisation in order to benefit from public grants but which in fact was anything but. The emails suggest the Infanta Cristina was consulted by her husband over the activities

San Javier

of the Institute. Sources from the Zarzuela Royal Palace declined to comment on the matter, saying it was not their policy to make statements concerning ‘court decisions’. Initial suspicions about Cristina – who is an ‘Infanta’ rather than a ‘Princess’, like her sister Elena, because she is not an immediate heir to the throne – arose on January 12, 2012 when the national daily newspaper El Mundo published that the Duchess of Palma earned 571,000 euros ion just three years of activity with Aizoon, a company she set up with Urdangarín. But on March 5, 2012, just days after Urdangarín first testified in court in Palma de Mallorca, Judge José Castro ruled out any involvement of the Infanta Cristina.

For those with ‘difficult’ items to dispose of during a Spring clean, the Ayuntamiento of San Javier has issued these directives: Municipal Ecoparks will take the following waste in household quantities: used car batteries, electrical and electronic equipment (refrigerators, microwaves, computers, TVs, phones, etc.), Solvents, paint, used cooking oil, scrap metal, all types of battery including alkaline, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, printer cartridges and toners. It will also accept mattresses and complete items of furniture. The address is: Ecoparque del Polígono de Los Urreas, in the Calle Sierra de Carrasquilla s/n. barnes’ bulletin

Cinematic Developments. Pilar De La Horadada In a recent edition of Sol Times, I mentioned the good works of Tish Hirst, support coordinator for the rebirth of the long closed, but much loved, cinema in Pilar De La Horadada. New owner of the premises, Snr. Diego, has been in touch, and tells me that as well as English films, his hope is to turn the old cinema building into a cultural centre. The plans include building a new stage, to encourage choir concerts, conferences, magic shows for children, and enough stage area to allow amateur dramatic groups to present their plays. Christmas shows would also be welcomed. Oh! yes they would! The wish is to improve the bar area (Any cast conditioned ale I wonder?) with a chef, who will provide a range of tapas, and other delicacies. He enjoys the support of the local Ayuntamiento for the project, but unfortunately, no financial help.

If any Sol Times readers have any thoughts to groups that might make use of the cinema, be it stage or foyer/bar area, please let Tish know on: tosham@cinemapilar.com I did ask Snr. Diego, about the rain falling through the roof. He tells me he has a friend who will sort it, just as soon as he can find a long enough ladder. I can almost smell the “Popping Corn”!

Rob Barnes moved to live in Spain, 7 years ago. In the UK, amongst other things, he was the Chair of the Midlands Regions, Independent Television Commission. The reason “Comedus” gains and entry into “Barnes’s Bulletin”, is that it’s more than just your average retail store.

Trouble at the 19th - at Corvera Golf! A resident from this delightful urbanisation in Murcia, drops me a line to express his fears that very soon, the Corvera Golf Resort, will take on the appearance of a dilapidated housing estate, unless the promoter of the complex, Antonio Rizo, is persuaded to stop his actions to rent houses to families who have been evicted from their own homes, for non-payment of mortgages, along with the long term unemployed. Antonio is to offer 150 homes, at just 150 euro a month. My contact via the ether, John, tells me that the promoter owes many thousands of euro, both to the community and it’s suppliers, and fears that very soon, services are going to grind to a halt. It’s not a case of “Not in my back yard” John assures me, but it’s plainly common sense, that with the special problems that this complex currently finds itself in, this is

neither the time, or the right place, for this action to be taken by Antonio Rizo. The Government here in Spain, have some 250, 000 people looking for some form of low cost housing. What the answer is, be it at a local level here in Murcia, or across the regions of Spain as a whole, sadly, I have no solution.

Los Palacios Garden Group

The Los Palacios Garden Group has decided to hold a Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 17th of April, at 11,o’clock, in Marianos Restaurant, Los Palacios. Some of the main points to be discussed will be the group’s Registration as a “Neighbourhood Association “, to this aim a new committee must be formally elected. Any person living on Los Palacios may attend, indeed, will be more than welcome. Well I suppose we should get back to gardening. The two things you can grantee will happen in Spain, the sun will shine and the weeds will grow. As a gardening group we have the equipment, strimmers, back pack weed sprayers and weed killer, but there is a definite lack of people to use them. We are still looking for volunteers to form a weed eradication group . This will comprise of about ten people to concentrate on weeds only. They would be expected to only put in about 3, hours a month, not much to ask for to see the area

looking neat and tidy. If you think you would like to help, contact me on: 646557887 or on our e-mail, address: vollunteers@ lospalacios-gardens.com. We seem to be mentioning the “Book Shop” every Month, they are running a “ free “ yes free raffle, you buy two books and get one free, because you have three books you are entitled to a raffle ticket. The raffle is drawn on the last Friday of every month and is valid for one month, then the new ticket is drawn. I have been approached by people telling me that they are not physically able to help, or they don’t live here permanently, they can still help by making a small donation at the book shop on a Friday morning. For more information about the Los Palacios garden group, minutes, future projects, why not visit our web site, lospalacios-gardeners.com. Edward Roberts,Chairman.

Child sized puppets and beautiful older than everyone else quiz ! No. 2 By Alan Gilchrist - Costa Blanca’s Top Hypnotherapist craftwork in La Nucía Every Sunday some ten or twelve carft stalls are set up in the cosy little square in front of the Town Hall in La Nucía, converting it into a lively “open air gallery”. The fair is advertised with the words “Artesanía de Autor”, because in every stall the author of the products is there, sometimes even working at his or her craft. This Sunady, 14th of April, the ninth edition of the fair will offer beautiful hand bound books, design jewelry in metal or macramé with semi-precious stones and original pottery. There is hand painted glass and textile, individually designed and made baby clothes and shoes, bracelets with celtic knots, patchwork, leather bags, belts and hats. The enchanting puppets Maxi and Dixi, who already took the scene several times, will come again to amaze the public of all ages. They are almost one meter high and not only manipulated, but even made by their Czech puppeteers and play all sorts of

Sport

instruments. After their performance they usually mix with the public. Both the craftmen and women who participate, and the artists that bring some life to the fair, change from week to week. The following Sunday, the 21st, for example, Alan will juggle and ride a monocycle, while the stalls will offer forged iron, soap, wooden toys and puzzles, felt bags, and silver, bronze and aluminium jewelry. The fair opens every Sunday from 10 am till 2 pm on the square in front of the Town Hall, in the middele of the old Town Centre. This is worth a visit and if you want to do so, you can join one of the guided tours (for free) that start in the fair at 11, 12 and 1 o’clock. SPANGLES DOES IT FOR CHARITY Saturday, 30 March, saw Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus taking part in a big charity fundraising day in Mil Palmeras. Organised by JP’s Bar in the square, this annual event has helped to raise thousands of Euros for local charities, such as the AECC, MABS Cancer Support Group and EMAUS, the children’s home in Elche. The main event of the day was a bike ride, with over 70 riders taking part. Supporters returned to the bar and were entertained by Spangles. “We have a very busy time leading up to our annual contest, which takes place on 13 April in Benalmádena, Málaga” said Spangles Musical Director, Gail Grainger, “but we support local charity and were delighted to take part in this great fundraising day.” It’s anticipated that the final total of funds raised will reach 2,500€, which will be divided between the AECC, EMAUS and MABS Murcia. There will be a presentation night at JP’s Bar on Friday, 19 April from 8.00 pm and all are welcome. For further details, please call Graham on 965 060 691.

Luther Ronzoni Vandross was an American singer, songwriter and producer. He sold over 25 million albums and won 8 Grammy Awards including Best R&B Male Vocal Performance 4 times. In 2004 he won 4 Grammy’s including the award for Song of the Year for the track “Dance with my Father” which he co-wrote with Richard Marx. Born in New York on the 20th April 1951 Vandross grew up in a musical family, he was playing the piano at the age of 3. He formed his first group Shades of Jade whilst in High School and was also a member of a New York Theatre workshop Listen my Brother who had a couple of minor chart successes. Vandross went to University but dropped out after a year to pursue a career in music. He was mostly doing session work in the 70’s working with artists such as Patti Labelle, Roberta Flack and Diana Ross. He was also writing songs working with David Bowie on the “Young Americans” album co-writing the track “Fascination”. He continued writing and session work until in 1978 when he joined the disco band Greg Diamonds Bionic Boogie as lead singer. They were relatively successful with fans but commercially did not do very well. It was an appearance on the Quincy Jones Sounds and Stuff like That television programme which made not only the public, but the music industry aware of how good he was. Vandross joined the famous pop dance act Change and their 1980 hits “The Glow of Love” and “Searching” with him singing lead vocals opened up the world for him. After disagreements mainly over money Vandross quit Change in 1981 and immediately was snapped up by Epic Records. His debut album “Never to Much” was released in 1981 and was a commercial and critical success. He spent the 80’s releasing albums all of which were topping the R&B and mainstream charts but was also touring and finding time to record guest vocals with other artists.Vandross was also heavily into producing. Legendary singer Aretha

Franklin asked him to produce her new album “Jump to It” and in 1983 he produced and worked with who he freely admitted was one of his major musical influences the great Dionne Warwick on her album “How many Times can we say Goodbye”. By the latter 80’s Vandross was still releasing classic albums but commercially single chart success was eluding him. In 1985 he sang background vocals on the Stevie Wonder hit “Part Time Lover” as well as producing for other artists. In 1990 he wrote and sang on “Who do you Love” a major hit with Whitney Houston and continued with the massive hit “Best Things in Life are Free” with Janet Jackson. The hits continued both solo and with artists such as Mariah Carey and in 1997 he was given the honour of singing the National Anthem at Superbowl XXXI at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. Vandross had suffered from Diabetes and Hypertension which was generic in his family and illness was taking its toll. His last tour was in 2002 and in 2003 he released the classic album “Dance with my Father” which was a commercial and critical hit. On the 16th April 2003 Vandross suffered a stroke and he withdrew from public life. He made a brief appearance on videotape at the 2004 Grammy’s to accept his award for Song of the Year (One of 4 he won for “Dance with my Father”.) His last appearance was on the Oprah Winfrey Show where he looked frail and very ill and he was never seen in public again. Luther Vandross died of a heart attack at the age of just 54 on the 1st July 2005. After 2 days of viewing his funeral was held at The Riverside Church on the 5th July attended by not only everyone in the R&B Industry but thousands of fans as well. I love his music especially the tracks “Give me the Reason” and “Stop to Love” and the songs he wrote and sang will be listened to and enjoyed for many more years by generations of fans old and new.

You can listen to Mark Davies on Costa Calida International Radio, Mon, Wed and Fri evenings 7.00 till 9.00 on 90 and 100 FM or www.costacalidaradio.com

The Magic Lamp Liquid was developed in the Costa Blanca after a gap in the market was noticed. Thousands of headlights in the Costa Blanca are glazed over, yellowed and dull due to the sunlight, pollution, grit and washing detergents. A solution to this problem needed to be found to save people money from buying new headlights when their original ones could be cleaned up, sparkling, as new. This process took 2 years to develop and now is available as a service to the public. Telephone 965 419 769 or 646 730 507 for more details.

Re-Platemate has been established for a number of years in the Vega Baja area of Alicante District and our sole purpose is to enable the registration of foreign plated cars brought into Spain. Our aim is to provide a simple, stress-free and timely service, so that your vehicle is fully Spain-legal. We want you to be so satisfied with the service, that you would be happy to refer us to a friend or relative. As with any business, there is always somebody cheaper. Our aim is to provide a high quality, value-for-money service at competitive rates. Whilst the majority of our clients are British, we have also successfully re-plated vehicles from many other EU countries including Ireland, Germany and France as the process is essentially the same irrespective of the country in which the car is presently registered. Our service is designed to successfully take your vehicle through all of the phases necessary to make you a fully legal vehicle owner in Spain. This specifically includes a matriculation engineer’s inspection and report (to satisfy the Spanish authorities that your vehicle is what it says it is on your present log book), ITV (MOT) inspection, presentation and exchange of your documents with various Spanish government departments in Alicante or Murcia, depending upon where you live. Also included in our flat- fee charge are the new number plates for your vehicle. EU legislation states that vehicles must be registered, taxed and inspected (MOT) in the same country as which the owner normally lives. If your vehicle is in Spain for more than 6 months, then you need to re-register the car in Spain and drive on Spanish licence plates. Contact: Tel: Alan 662 249 159 www. replatematecostablanca.com

Samaritans in Spain are seeking

a Marketing Manager and a Fundraising Manager to support members of the Trustee Board Both positions are voluntary and neither requires a full time commitment. The Marketing Manager role would suit a retired marketing professional. The role includes developing and maintaining a marketing and public relations programme which raises awareness of Samaritans in Spain and generates additional funding. The Fund Raising Manager will be required to work in cooperation with the Marketing team, organising and coordinating events to raise funds and awareness of the SiS. The organisation operates from its new Multi-Purpose Centre in CC Punta Marina Torrevieja which houses the telephone call centre with the capacity to handle the recently introduced 24/7 service, a new Drop-in Centre for those who prefer face to face contact, and equally important a new Charity Shop to generate funds so essential to maintaining the current and future service. The successful candidates will ideally be within easy reach of Torrevieja and the centre.

For further information regarding either post please contact Chris on 689 301 724 Samaritans in Spain is operated by Costa Blanca Samaritans, which is a Registered Charity in Spain.

Excellent Nottingham Trent University Choir The excellent Nottingham Trent University Choir enchanted the audience Saturday evening at La Zenia church with their outstanding singing. The quality of singing from this mainly youthful choir was breathtaking, excellent harmonising and their full rich sound filled the church to the delight of everyone. The strength of the singing belied the actual number of singers present; with eyes closed it wouldn’t have been hard to envisage a much larger choir. The clear, strong voices of these very talented singers were a joy to everyone attending.

The choir sang a varied programme from Mozart to John Rutter, including the Londonderry Air and What a Wonderful World. The audience was treated to two outstanding solos, one given by Matthew Hopkins, the musical director and conductor of this very talented and committed group of singers. The full Nottingham Trent University Choir recently joined the world class City of

Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) for the last night of the proms under the conductorship of Matthew Hopkins. Clearly Matthew is following in his father, Nigel Hopkins footsteps! I would thoroughly recommend this choir to everyone who loves outstanding choral singing. For those of you unlucky enough not to have seen this choir during their present visit I would urge you to look out for their next one and make sure you book early. Truly a choir of outstanding quality and one lovers of quality music shouldn’t miss.

Tony Lincoln’s Soul Seduction Send Off For many years Tony Lincoln has been the mainstay of entertainment on the Costas. So it is with much sadness that we learn that he is to return to the UK at the end of April. In his honour “Night Out Promotions” will be holding “An evening of Soul and Motown” at Restaurante Los Rosales on Tuesday 16th April. Tony will be comparing and hosting the evening, so show goers can expect lots of fun and some great music. Joining him will be Richie Alexander who will be delivering Soul classics from Tavares, The O’Jays, Billie Paul, The 4 Tops and many more. Richie has been a vocalist for all his life, and his popularity is such that he has only half a dozen spare dates left to fill this year. With a smooth, silky voice it’s no wonder that he is acknowledged as “Mr Soul and Motown” Making her debut will be the gorgeous Chloe Leigh, who recently spent 8 years with her show in Gran Canaria. She now resides in the UK where she is renowned for her outstanding Diva Tribute. This is the first time that Chloe has appeared in Mainland Spain. Chloe is a versatile vocalist with a strong voice who has been singing in bands since she was very young. A huge lot of talent in one young lady! There will be a raffle held by Elche Childrens’ Care Home, who have raised thousands of Euros by attending shows held at Restaurante Los Rosales Tickets are 12.50 Euros for show and meal. Doors open at 7.00pm. sketches and of course these are plentiful in the name of “It Ain’t Half Hot Mum” “You’re the one that I want” and “Sonny Boy”

Well, not exactly but Rascals underwent their first photo shoot for the Spring and Summer series of shows which open in Los Motesinos at the School of Culture and Music on May 3rd and 4th . This year is quite a milestone for The Rascals as it is 20 years since they did their first show in La Siesta Square. Sadly the founders of Rascals Grace and Wally Scott are no longer with us, but they would be so proud to see Rascals living on and producing such wonderful shows for charity. This year’s show is entitled, very appropriately “ I Remember it well” which has been put together to commemorate their wonderful anniversary. The show is packed with excerpts all of your favourite musicals including Oklahoma, Calamity Jane, “My Fair Lady” and many more. There will also be a James Bond section in which Rascals dancers will perform some wonderful routines A Rascals show would not be the same without some comedy

Racals have become renown for their wonderful and breath taking costumes and who can forget the fabulous songs from “My Fair Lady” such as “The Ascot Gavotte”, “I could have danced all Night” and “On the street where you live”? The second half is just as lively, opening with a fabulous circus routine with clowns, jugglers and the like as well as great classics from “Showboat” “The Boyfriend and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The first two performances are almost upon us. Los Montesinos dates are May 3rd and 4th, followed by May 18th in Guardamar at the Casa de Cultura, June 1st In Benijofar Casa de Cultura and concluding in Torrevieja at the Virgen del Carmen on June 13th. Demand is always considerable for Rascals shows indeed the Christmas shows were completely sold out, so please don’t be disappointed and reserve your seats now. Tickets are still only 6 Euros and can be obtained by calling Sue on 96 678 4874 or Jill on 96 6727 282. All Rascals ticket money is donated to local charities and so far they have raised over 120,000 Euros.

The Show Must go On”

This saying is becoming all too familiar for The Actors Studio’s next show “Charitable Acts” at the Casa de Cultura San Miguel next weekThurs/Fri 11th/12th April. Cast ill health, over the period of rehearsals, has resulted in last minute cast changes and new actors having to be found and thrust into parts. Not only have cast changes been a problem but the script has had to be adjusted too. Even so the director and writer David Whitney is pretty confident that his team of talent will still put on a very entertaining and amusing show. The show consists of two one act original comedies and promises to again fill the Casa de Cutura with laughter plus a little song and dance.. Tickets are 6 euros each and can be purchased at Bargain Books San Miguel, The Alzheimers Charity Shop Torrevieja or bought on the door each night. For further info please contact David on Tel 966704097. By supporting The Actors Studio you also support their sole charity the AFA Alzheimers Association Torrevieja.

The Help for Heroes fun day at Punta Marina Commercial Centre on the 30 March raised the grand total of 2955€ thanks to our entertainers Nick Gold (who compered), Dan Davy, JJ Soulman, Davy Jones, Elise Macgregor, Release, Touch of Class, The Notion and TAABS. The sun shone down on us all day and we were treated to a march by The Royal British Legion led by The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. Included in the total is 270€ raised by The Royal British Legion on their stall. I would like to thank my stall ladies who worked so hard leading up to and on the day, local businesses including Milar, Timeless Fashions, Captains Table and Le Cafet to name but a few, for their generous raffle prizes and support. Thanks also goes to everyone who turned up to make it a great day for a very worthy cause

crazy ladies tap dance group

No one is ever too old to enjoy dancing, it’s a wonderful way to keep fit and to socialize with likeminded people. It is also very rewarding to be able to dance for charities and raise money for good causes. The Crazy ladies are a group of mature ladies who just love to dance. Many of them have never danced before they came to Spain but are now enjoying the benefits of learning from various teachers over the last few years. Georgie Anderson, from Los Alcazares, is their leader and choreographer at present and has danced since she was three. Georgie has danced highland, tap, ballet, modern, Irish, flamenco and ballroom. Georgie started competing and winning dance championships at the Highland Games in her home country of Scotland. This continued until her late teens when marriage and children caused an untimely gap in her career, however later in life she was invited to and toured the world dancing with the British Caledonian Airways Band which included television performances. Once British Caledonian disbanded Georgie joined many groups in the south ofEngland where she had moved to because of her husbands employment. The groups included tap dancing and flamenco, with many visits to flamenco sufllmer schools in London. After moving to Spain Georgie found it diffrcult to find flamenco classes that suited her age and ability, so returned to tap with a group who at that time were performing in Los Arcos Restaurant (the Sofisikats). When that teacher retired, Georgie moved to the other classes at the old Asturias in Punta prima. From this group she took part

in many fund raising concerts, however, the choreographer of that group found it necessary to return to England. The ladies still wanted to continue dancing so they asked Georgie if she would lead. It was at this stage that she started to choreograph some new and more modern routines ( having never wanted to teach or choreograph all of her dancing life), but the ladies can be very persuasive and Georgie very pensively started to build some routines. Since then ( and the name was chosen by them!) The Crazy Ladies have increased their repertoire to include some classic tap dance numbers and some more modern numbers to songs by Adele, Paloma Faith, Paulo Nutini etc. In the last 3 years they have performed at many charity functions including the very successful Song and Dance Cabaret atLa Serena Hotel. The ladies meet twice weekly at AsturiasPiz. zena in Punta Prima ( Weds and Sats ) and are continuing to learn new routines in the hope that they will be invited to perform at more charity events. If you would like the ladies to take part in your event the please contact either Sue on 966 189 513 email peter497@ btinternet.com or Georgie on 968 713 356

Look Good Feel Great chewing gum can boost your brain power

Most of us don’t think twice about it, but chewing — mastication — has implications for our health. The way we chew, for instance, can alter our digestion, teeth and even our face shape. And new research suggests how often we chew could even affect our brain power. We’ve all heard the dictum about chewing each mouthful 20 times before swallowing, but actually how many times we should chew depends on what we’re eating, says gastroenterologist Dr Nick Read, chief medical adviser for charity The IBS Network. ‘The Victorians thought you needed to chew food 14 times but

we generally wait until it feels right and then swallow — it’s intuitive.’ He says that because our diet has become softer, thanks to all that processed food, we now don’t need to chew for so long. However, raw fruit and vegetables, and meat, demand more chewing. ‘If you don’t, lumps of food will pass through your digestive system and not be completely absorbed,’ says Dr Read. Chewing breaks food down into small pieces, which increases the surface area for the digestive enzymes to react with and so helps swallowing and digestion. Chewing also sends messages to the brain through the trigeminal nerve in the face. The brain then sends signals down the vagus nerve (the long nerve connecting to the abdomen) to tell the stomach to start acid secretion in preparation for the food arriving. Chewing also generates saliva from the salivary glands, which mixes with the food, ensuring it’s the right consistency to be digested and travel through the digestive system. Saliva is also essential for cleaning our mouths when we’re eating. When we eat slowly, our bodies are more relaxed, allowing the parasympathetic nervous system, which stimulates digestion, to do its job properly. However, if you’re eating on the hoof and rushing about, you also stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, which is associated with ‘fight or flight’ responses. ‘The sympathetic side puts the whole body on alert and diverts energy to the heart, brain and muscles, while the parasympathetic nervous system’s functions, such as digestion, are halted,’ says Dr Read. In practical terms, the sympathetic system inhibits the secretion of stomach acid, and slows down gastric emptying so food stays in the stomach longer, making us feel over-full and sick. This can also cause painful spasms in the intestine. Eating quickly and not chewing enough also makes us swallow more air, which may cause bloating, belching and discomfort. While the evidence is mixed, it’s thought chewing gum may stop

you forming some kinds of memory, says Professor Andrew Smith from Cardiff University, a specialist in health-related behaviour. ‘Many aspects of memory rely on using sub-vocal rehearsal (when you repeat words to yourself in your head) and it’s difficult to do that while chewing because it’s a competing activity — but this area needs more research.’ Gum may also have a negative effect on the gut. Chewing gum stimulates acid secretion in the stomach but then doesn’t deliver food to it, leaving excess acid. It could cause gastritis - inflammation of the stomach lining, ulcers, blistering, indigestion and soreness and as most gum contains sorbitol, which is a poorly absorbed sugar and can go through the intestine without being absorbed and ferment in the colon, this can lead to excess gas and bloating.’ Further research is underway!

Neglect of Orihuela Costa Infrastructure

The fact that Orihuela Costa continues to receive the leftovers from the Orihuela trough is easy to detect. Just take a drive around the area and you can see that the large urbanisations that were built in the boom years are very poorly serviced in relation to the rich and subsidised amenities that residents of Orihuela City enjoy. The city of Orihuela derived an enormous boost to corporate coffers as a direct consequence of the drive to cover the coastal region with countless developments, many built without all the necessary permissions required under Spanish law. Now these urbanisations are populated with residents paying their property taxes. The majority of this money continues to benefit the ambitions and schemes of the local politicians most of whom are resident in Orihuela city, in developing and subsidising services for the benefit of the city dweller. The appalling difference in services between the city and the coastal area is evident in every area. Due to the lack of real democratic representation for the Costa, there is hardly a voice advocating for the coastal residents on the municipality’s council, hence decisions taken that directly affect Costa residents are taken by individuals who have no affinity, understanding or pride in this locality. It isn’t hard to visualise how Orihuela budget and spending meetings are conducted, surpluses and spending must be delivered to areas where the councillors actually live, to people they actually interact with. The lone voice of an expat representative can be marginalised, laughed at and very effectively ignored. I’m sure that the typical view is expressed that immigrants expect everything their own way and are always complaining. However, the lack of facilities along Orihuela Costa affects all residents, Spanish included. The continuing saga of the development of Cala Mosca is a good example of this total disregard of the wishes and interests of people actually affected by a decision that is made 30 kilometres away. If you surveyed coastal inhabitants from all nationalities about their views on the development of this area there would be a resounding no. However, when councillors who have no knowledge and no liking for the area are making the decisions all they can see is another hefty boost to coffers of Orihuela and another windfall that can be pumped into the already over resourced and rich city. Further they then deflect any complaints as another example of immigrants stirring up feelings and not being able to accept Spanish decision making. It would be very interesting to see the spending breakdown of the Orihuela

Municipality. If population distribution is important in budget allocation, then reason would surely dictate that the coast should receive equal amounts of spending as the city. As recently disclosed population statistics clearly show, the difference in the populations of the city and the coast is just 706! However the range of services and facilities on offer to the city dweller would seem to indicate that the Costa is just a small village, and not the equal to the town. I fail to see how a city 30 kilometres distance, separated by countryside and independent towns can lay administrative claims on the coastal area. Surely a location with a population of 33,227 is of sufficient size to have its own municipal council and elect councillors to that council who actually live in the area and can truly represent the residents of the area they live in. I am always amazed that towns and villages of much smaller size have control of their administrative affairs. Just a few kilometres for Orihuela Costa, the town of Pilar de la Horadada with a population of approximately 25,000 gained independence from the strangle hold of Orihuela in 1986. Since that time this town has thrived and the amenities available to the residents have really grown over the last few years. Money raised from the area is actually spent the residents contributing to municipal income. There is no comparison between the public amenities in Pilar de la Horadada and Orihuela Costa, the former is well resourced thriving area, the later is a cash cow for the benefit of the well subsidised inhabitants of a location 30 kilometres away. San Miguel del Salinas, population approximately 8,000; Montesinos, population 5,500; Delores, population 7,300; Catral, population 8,600 are all self governing and self determining independent administrative areas. The services provided in all these areas clearly outstrip those offered to Orihuela residents. Until the residents of Orihuela Costa have power over the development and advancement of their own locality they will continue to receive the scraps off the Orihuela table. Independence for Orihuela Costa is the only real way forward. This is the only way that will ensure that services and amenities appropriate to the size of the population are provided. For too long the Costa has been marginalised, neglected and raided for the benefit of Orihuela. It is now time that the residents gain the services that hey have been paying for. The only way to achieve this is for the Costa to achieve independence from Orihuela. Jan Holden Resident Orihuela Costa

world of Charitable Acts. Unlike the legion of very hard working and competent voluntary workers contributing to the well being and betterment of various causes along the Costa Blanca David’s plays poke gentle fun at the less than competent individuals working within a charity shop and others attempting to put on a yearly concert. The first play follows a morning of mayhem and incompetence in a charity shop, where the number of workers totally outstrips the few customers visiting the shop. Here you will encounter Pamela, who has let the absence of her manager go totally to her head. She is not only opinionated but also totally incompetent and jumps too easily to conclusions on little or no evidence. Her bunch of “staff” consists of a ragtag collection of individuals, each who also support her in her outlandish conclusions! The second play sees the inept collection of workers badly attempting to put on a concert in the church hall. Again David has created a variety of characters often found in traditional village life but made larger than life with even more flaws. We meet the major, the bumbling vicar, the “organiser” plus a local DJ. Gentle fun is poked at the lack of skills, both social and practical of this bunch of characters.

The Actors Studio is rapidly approaching production dates for their latest show Charitable Acts. Now into the final week of rehearsals prior to the actual performance, the company has been working very hard getting into the skins of a bunch of new characters created by the pen of David Whitney. The production will be performed at the Casa de Cultura San Miguel on Thursday 11th April and Friday 12th April. It also stands out for its impressive range of services open all year round: eight banks, an abundance of food stores, two medical centres, a service station, a Water Park, five supermarkets, a Norwegian state school, a town hall and the La Marquesa golf course. Different nationalities living together in harmony has strengthened the bond between Ciudad Quesada’s thousands of residents. I have mentioned many times that I am not able to explore and travel throughout Spain as much as I would like, but my husband’s 50th Birthday was an exception and we decided we would go on a day trip. I would have been happy to hike up the nearest mountain but I knew my children would be none to happy with the idea, so with that in mind we thought a trip to Murcia was in order, and for the girls benefit, a visit to Terra Natura. With Linzi’s “Are we there yet?” ringing in our ears we decided to go straight to Terra Natura and was surprised to find it so close to the Motorway. I had, for some reason, expected a more rural setting. Our initial disappointment soon gave way to one of delight as we made our way through the Park. The walkways meandered through the park and were built at a good height to view and interact with the animals. I also liked the fact that they concentrated on many species that were native to Spain, a case in point was a large enclosure dedicated to the Brown Bear, otherwise known as the Cantabrian brown bear , Oso pardo cantábrico. We were very fortunate to witness, up close, two bears play fighting in the water which you would not be able to see in the wild as they are nocturnal and retiring. Having once roamed most of the Iberian peninsula, since the first half of the 20th century the Cantabrian brown bear has been reduced to two isolated pockets in the Cantabrian mountains of Northern Spain. Even though there is a maximum fine of €300,000 for killing a bear, following a ban on hunting of the species in 1973, the fact is hardly a year passes without yet another bear having been killed by Poachers, either by poisoned bait or illegal hunting. The Cantabrian brown bear is catalogued on the Spanish Red List of Endangered Species as “In Danger of Extinction”. In Europe it is listed in the European Mammal Assessment as “Critically Endangered”. On an international level, it is not on the endangered list due to the existence of relatively healthy populations of Brown bears elsewhere. Latest figures give a total of around 160 bears split between a population straddling the borders of Asturias, León and Galicia to the west (120 -130) and another population around the borders of Cantabria, León and Asturias to the east (30 – 40), separated by some 30km. Fortunately on a local level, an “Action Plan for the Conservation of the Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) in Europe”, made specific recommendations for the management of bears in Spain. The Spanish Ministry of the Environment had previously drawn up a “Plan para la Recuperación del Oso Pardo” with the intention of saving the species from extinction by coordinating conservation efforts across the autonomous communities in which it currently lives.

Bear habitat is monitored by patrols and education programs are underway, particularly among the young but also among hunting groups. A project of photo “trapping” is enjoying success and another of radio-tracking individuals is being considered. Conservation groups are working to enhance centuries-old corridors used by the bears and are planting fruit trees and siting beehives to supplement their diet. In summer through to autumn, the Brown Bear can double its weight, gaining up to 180 kg of fat, on which it relies to make it through winter. In females, this accumulation of fat is integral to a successful pregnancy as the fetus develops whilst the mother is hibernating due to a phenomenon called delayed implantation. Through the process of delayed implantation, a females fertilized egg divides and floats freely in the uterus for six months. During winter dormancy, the fetus attaches to the uterine wall. The cubs are born eight weeks later, while the mother sleeps. If the mother does not gain enough weight to survive through the winter, the embryo does not implant and is reabsorbed into the body. Gee, what a way to do it? No heartburn, morning sickness or varicose vines to worry about! - Plus she will wake up only briefly to give birth! During this period, both the mother and the cubs will have to survive on the accumulation of fat that the she has gained before hibernation. The cubs, normally a litter of two or occasionally three, have no hair when they are born and weigh only about 350 grams and will stay with their mother for eighteen months to two years. Excitingly, the breeding season is actually almost upon us and normally occurs around May - June. The Cantabrian brown bear is an opportunistic omnivore. Eating mainly plants, roots, fruit, berries and nuts, its mostly vegetarian diet is supplemented by insects, eggs, honey, fungi and carrion. Since the outbreak of BSE (or mad cow disease), the EU brought in laws enforcing the removal of carcasses from the countryside. This had led to a drastic shortage of carrion for the more well-known carrion eaters such as Griffon vultures and Red kites. A less well-known fact is that bears also rely on carrion, especially in the spring when they need to boost their body weight Although the laws have been revised conditionally for the re-opening of feeding stations (muladeros) for carrion eating birds, provision has yet to be made for the bears. Fortunately steps have been made in the right direction to protect this amazing animal as it would be a sad day in Spain, if the only place we were able to see it was in a wildlife park, such as Terra Natura opposed to within its natural environment. I was pleased to see that the coat of arms of the city of Madrid, has a bear, standing on green grass, shaking a strawberry tree, also native to Spain, as well as an impressive bronze statue which is found on the Puerta del Sol Square, the former entry gate of the City.

QUESTION: What vegetables do recommend growing h what advice can you ere give growing them?

you and on

634 360 179

ANSWER:

I am possibly not the best person to ask, considering the many failures I’ve had here! The main thing I have learnt is to prepare the soil well before you plant anything. Remove any builder’s rubble, large stones etc. and then dig in as much compost and well-rotted manure as you can get your hands on! Goat, chicken, horse, donkey - it doesn’t matter providing it is well-rotted or it will burn anything you plant. Try and dig down to a depth of at least a foot to eighteen inches this may mean hiring a small rotavator to do the job, but it will be well worth the effort and expense. Once the ground is prepared you are spoilt for choice, but I suggest you plant potatoes as they will help to break up the ground. In the UK, I used purpose-bought seed potatoes but the Old Fellas appear to just use ordinary spuds which have gone to seed. They cut the potato into however many chits there are on it (places it has sprouted) and plant these individually. If you can find proper seed potatoes use these as they will produce a better spud. Make sure you bank the soil up around them and keep covering the new leaves as they grow or you will have green potatoes which are inedible. Water into the troughs either side of these banks so the roots obtain the most benefit from the water. Tomatoes are a must and even though they are cheap to buy there is nothing like picking and eating a tomato which you’ve grown yourself. Pinch out all the growing shoots at the leaf axles, although the Spanish tend not to bother and let them grow as large bushes. Once the flowers appear, feed with a weak solution of liquid tomato fertiliser (I get friends to bring mine from the UK - much cheaper!). Make sure you stake your tomato plants firmly or the winds we

get here will snap them. I like to grow several varieties i.e. large Spanish ones, small cherry, Italian and good old Gardeners delight! Beans and peas do well here. We are used to growing them up canes but the Spanish let them scramble over twigs at will. I sometimes have to water the plants in the evening with a sprayer in order to pollinate as there may not be sufficient bees to do the job! Melons and cucumbers are also a must. I’d tried melons in UK but had never succeeded in actually eating one! Here they are easy. Mine are usually very small for some reason but sufficient for one person and very tasty and juicy. In UK I grew cucumbers in the greenhouse and the thrill of growing them outside in the Spanish sun hasn’t worn off for me. They certainly taste better ripened here. Last year I experimented by growing tomatoes, cucumbers, melons and courgettes in large pots but it wasn’t really a success. The main problem was that they all dried out so fast and I was unable to keep up with the watering. Far better to plant in the ground and if possible, use an automatic irrigation system!

UK farmer makes world’s first MILK VODKA

It is the drink of choice in Russia, typically made from grain and consumed by hard-bitten drinkers in sub-zero temperatures. But now farmer Jason Barber is making the world’s first milk vodka – from his herd of 250 cows at Beaminster, Dorset. Black Cow vodka has become the must-have tipple at restaurants owned by Heston Blumenthal and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Celebrity fans include 007 star Daniel Craig and Liz Hurley. The milk from Mr Barber’s cows is separated into curds and whey. The curds are used to make cheese while the watery leftovers – whey – are fermented into a beer using a special yeast that converts the milk sugar into alcohol. This is distilled and treated in a secret blending process. The vodka is then triple-filtered before being bottled – with a gold top. It has taken Mr Barber three years to perfect the process and produce a vodka that approving experts say has ‘a creamy nose’. Mr Barber, 47, a sixth-generation farmer, had the idea after watching a TV documentary about Tuva, a small republic in Siberia, where locals make vodka from yak milk. He said: ‘I’m a big fan of vodka – it’s the only drink that doesn’t give me a hangover.’ Black Cow is made from the same milk used to make Barber’s 1833 cheddar, winner of the World Cheese Awards Cheddar Trophy 2012.

have you caught the baking bug?

the rise of the cupcake

The humble cake has become a hero of our times. We’re baking them, buying them, selling them, reading and watching TV programmes about them. While the global economy army of bakers has been beavering in kitchens throughout the land, selling scones and cupcakes and, more importantly, acting as a powerful rising agent for national revenue. Where once hemlines were an indicator of the state of the stock market, with this recession we seek sweet salvation.

up from 27 per cent in 2011.

Georgi Gyton, associate editor of industry magazine British Baker says, “Cakes are an affordable luxury. Where once we treated ourselves to a meal out, now we’ve downscaled to tea and cake. What’s more, baking fits in with the back-tobasics mentality of austerity, and cupcakes and layer cakes are easy to make. The satisfaction of making a cake and decorating it yourself is incredibly uplifting. That’s why TV shows such as The Great British Bake Off have been so popular. It’s all about the feel-good factor.”

New novel shows the resilience of orphaned siblings

A brother and sister cope with tragic loss, hard work and World War I in ‘Families are Forever’

set of obstacles await them.

“When I started researching my family history, I discovered that there were different cultures and I decided to write a story that would bring them all together,” Brand writes. “No matter what society you are in, you can still control your own life if you really want to.”

TORREVIEJA, Spain – Author L. A. Brand tells a story about resilience and the spirit of survival in her uplifting new novel “Families are Forever” (published by AuthorHouse). Brand’s coming-of-age tale is a classic story of rags to riches set in England in the years leading up to World War I. Centered around two children, George and Charlotte, the book chronicles their childhood, years fraught with tragedy, loss, struggle and hard work. Born to a Jewish mother who was disowned by her family after she married James, a silk weaver, George and Charlotte were forced to grow up fast. After their father was killed, their mother sunk into a deep depression and drowned herself, feeling overwhelmed by the responsibilities of raising two children alone. The orphaned siblings were left behind to fend for themselves. “Families are Forever” recounts the various twists and turns life throws at them, working in silk mills and migrating from gypsy camps to fairgrounds. Musical Director Wanted

Campoverde Theatre Group is in need of a new musical director. Do you have the skills necessary to direct, coach and develop the singing skills of this very talented and committed group to enable them to continue to perform musical theatre to a high level? Over recent years, Campoverde Theatre Group have been guided on their musical journey by the very skillful talents of Huw Jones and Keith Monk who have proved to everyone that this group of actors can perform very creditable musical theatre. Now the group is looking for a new Musical Director

to continue the good work undertaken by these two skilled musicians. Campoverde Theatre Group is one of the oldest theatre groups operating on the southern part of the Costa Blanca. The group has an experienced and committed company of actor / singers plus good back stage and technical crews. Presently the group has made the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel its home for performances drawing audiences from a wide area.

The group has recently completed a very successful run of the musical play Di de Di at San Miguel to much critical acclaim. This show had many musical numbers where the company proved their talents singing effectively as a chorus plus some very good solo numbers. However, in order to continue this level of performance we need to attract a new Musical Director for our future performances. It is envisaged that the group will be performing pantomime in the early part of the New Year and there is a likelihood that the group will be doing another musical play later in 2014. Both of these envisaged productions will require a large musical input for which the group will require coaching and directing. If you are interested in being our next Musical Director please contact Tony Kelly on 96 618 2415 who will be only too pleased to give you more information. Campoverde Theatre Group is a friendly group of individuals who share an interest in live theatre. The group is an ideal place to have fun, develop a new interest whilst raising money for charity and extend your social and friendship groups, meet new friends and enjoy a good social life. The group tries to have regular social events; meals out, dinner dances, bowling and crazy golf are just some of the events that have been enjoyed over the previous few months. We are always looking for new members, not just for acting and singing, but also to help back stage, with making sets, props and costumes, plus technical support for sound, lights, etc. Prospective new members will be made very welcome and now is a very good time to get involved with us as we are at the planning stage for our next endeavour. The group normally rehearses on Monday and Wednesdays starting at 2pm, however presently we are only meeting on Wednesdays. Why don’t you drop in to the Community Centre, Blue Lagoon on Wednesdays at 2pm or give Tony a ring on 96 618 2415.

COMMUNITY NEWS Dear Editor,

Recently one of my friends, who lived on Orihuela Costa died. This sad event has been made even more traumatic to the family by the total lack of funeral or cemetery services on Orihuela Costa. Since the family have been looking where to bury their father I started to look around at all the towns and villages near the Orihuela Costa and see that even villages with really small populations have appropriate cemeteries near to them. San Miguel has a small cemetery, Algorfa has a very new and modern cemetery capable of serving that small village for many years to come. Obviously Orihuela is well served with a cemetery, but the coast, with a population over 30,000 inhabitants has absolutely no provision. Luckily at the moment the deceased of Orihuela Costa can be buried at San Pedro. However how long this will continue to be available is anyone’s guess. Why is the coastal region not deemed significant enough to have decent burial provisions for its large and aging who all will need this service at some point in the future. Is this another example of the total disregard of the needs of Orihuela Costa community by the mindless and thoughtless rulers based in Orihuela? This situation is toatally disgusting Liz Page

apah dog show Last November, A.P.A.H. Animal Rescue Charity held their Annual Fun Dog Show, for the first time at El Rancho Restaurant, on the La Marquesa Road, just outside Los Montesinos. It was a huge success, and it was agreed that future Dog Shows would be held at what is a perfect location for this type of event. So on Saturday 27th April, A.P.A.H. will once again, hold the first of its two annual Fun Dog Shows & Barbeque at El Rancho. Registration for the show begins at 1.00pm and the Judging is due to start at 2.30pm A critical comment which came out of the previous Show, was that apart from the actual judging of the Dogs entered in the Show, there was nothing pet-related on offer. The forthcoming Show will be very different as A.P.A.H. has contacted some local businesses who are happy to be a part of the fund-raising event. The owner of the Food Cupboard from San Miguel; who was present at the last Show, has promised to bring along lots of ‘doggy treats’, doggy fridge magnets and other pet related gifts. Mundoviviente who have recently moved premises from Catral to Los Montesinos will be there with lots of dog and cat food, pet beds, kennels, scratch posts etc. The owner of Pampermepetsspain, will be there offering grooming and trimming,

but shampooing will be a little difficult! However she would be more than delighted to make appointments for dogs who need a little more than just a trim. Finally a very talented photographer; who is well known to A.P.A.H. will be offering to take portrait photos of dogs; especially those whose owners want to capture that ‘rosette moment’. A.P.A.H. hopes that lots of people will keep the 27th April free, so they can come along, bring their dogs; if they have any, or come on their own and enjoy a lovely afternoon, whilst helping to support the work that A.P.A.H. carries with abandoned dogs and cats.

WHAT IS PETANCA ????

Its for people by people with balls!!!

2 or 3 round silver ones and a small coloured one. It is multi-national - how many languages can you say ‘Oh buggar’ in? I can do 4.. Its competitive, its addictive, its fun, equal for all sexes, and if a husband wants his supper he had better use his balls wisely. Oh yes.. its full of innuendos, that is something that translates to any language. In France its called Boules -- but we don’t talk about that -- Spanish is Petanca. Its a real favourite with the archetypal old Spanish man on the beach. Totally at peace with everything. For us who belong to a club, its a little more organised. Its about team work, 2 or 3 players per side. It could be 1 -- but thats boring with no one to shout at when it goes wrong!! The small ball is thrown out, followed by the silver balls, NO not all at once. The idea is to get the big ball nearest the small ball ( coche, technical term) to score points, the first side to get to 13 points are declared the winners. 13 is such an unlucky number for me, so I try to avoid it at all costs, usually ending up many numbers below that. Success!!! So, when you are ‘on’ you are ‘off the piste and when ‘off you are ‘on’ the piste. The piste being the playing area. All balls could be pointed, bombed, snookered. rolled up,dead ended, bad bounced, fell me out me hand mate, and there are a few unprintable terms, Here in Orihuela Costa there are various Winter and Summer leagues. For instance,

the 2012 PA13 Las Salinas Winter league consisted of 5 divisions of B teams per division, so with B named players per match plus reserues and social members thats a potential for 500 or more new friends to make. (long christmas card list). Brits, Danes, Belgians, Swedes, Germans, French and even the odd Irish plaf. There are numerous clubs around, so if you are interested in finding out more - go and ask the people playing, they’re a friendly bunch, won’t bite - well hard and only on your playing arm!! The summer league is sponsored by Casa Manuel and only consists of 2 divisions, one more serious than the other and is full of competitive players - scarey. The other is for fun where possibly beer o’clock and gossip are equally as important as playing. All leagues, Summer and Winter, hold tournaments within the league and these are played for charity. The turnout for these events is tremendous with lots of money being raised. It is truly a fun game, a good way of keeping fit and the sun is always shinning, what more can a poor retired girl want. “VIVACE” RETURNS TO ORIHUELA!

Having heard some wonderful music emanating from a building in San Miguel de Salinas last Thursday, I made enquiries and discovered that Vivace Classical Choir were busy rehearsing there, and are once more planning to perform in the beautiful Teatro Circo in Orihuela. After their wonderful sell-out concert of “Carmina Burana” last year, they were delighted to be invited to return to perform their latest work. This year, they are joined by the small chamber choir Chorale, and are presenting “Elijah” by Felix Mendelssohn. A truly mighty oratorio, and an evening guaranteed to delight the audience. Well known soloists Arthur Berwick , Bass, and Rodney Porter , Tenor, will once again be coming from the UK to join the choir. The concert is on Sunday 14th April at 7.30pm in the Teatro Circo, Orihuela. Tickets are €5 and are available from the Theatre Box Office - Telephone : 966 74 01 04, or from choir member Douglas Brown - Telephone: 659 61 63 56. As last year, proceeds from the concert will go to Manos Unidas. The choir are also running coaches to and from the theatre. The coaches will leave from Quesada, travelling via San Miguel de Salinas, and the cost is €5. There are still some seats available, and Douglas will be happy to help arrange that. It will be an evening not to be missed!

VELVETONES VISIT MARBELLA! The Velvetones dropped in to The Marbella Nursing home in Torrevieja, to surprise Olive Hall with a trip down memory lane. Olive (now in her nineties) was married to The Velvetones creator - the late Harry Hall, who started the chorus almost 15 years ago. Olive was still singing until a few years ago and was delighted to hear the ladies sing songs old and new to her, fellow residents and staff. It is such a fantastic hobby and a great way of meeting new friends! Come along to rehearsals each Wednesday mornings from 9.45 to 12.15 at Restaurant El Paraiso, Jardin del Mar behind Carrefour and McDonalds in Torrevieja. Come and see us at The Torrevieja Harmonisers show at Los Montesinos on Saturday 28th April - For more information call Tony Wagstaffe on 966 713 342 or visit our Website www. velvetones.org for details of our Spring show on May 8th at El Paraiso. MOTORING TEST DRIVE: SEAT TOLEDO

We live in extremely straitened times where most countries including the UK continue to accumulate debt. The prospect of a career for life has become virtually non-existent. UK house prices have risen to such an extent that first time buyers are now nearly 40 years old. In fact when my father was my age he borrowed three times his salary to purchase our family home - a beautiful four bed detached property in need of updating with two acres of land in a picturesque part of Dorset. That would barely get me a one bed house in a rundown part of the next county now. Why has life become such a struggle? Most of us feel that there’s less money with which we have to do more. Consequently, the hard up motorist craves a good deal and Seat, realises this. It has responded with its Toledo,

the family hatchback priced from under £13,000 to just below £18,000. And its diesel model also happens to be super economical. Thank goodness – perhaps life is not so bad after all. Named after the historic Spanish city, this is an extremely sensible car for our times. With its clean lines it one to be proud of; the 1.6TDI SE test model significantly helped by its rich burgundy finish. Sharing the same chassis as the Skoda Rapid, which I tested only a few weeks ago both models clearly share a good deal. This comes as no surprise as Spain based Seat is owned by Volkswagen, which also owns Skoda. The rear wash/wipe on both models has been borrowed from the Audi A1. The washer is built into the wiper

and effectively projects a jet of spray across the window unlike any other wiper I have come across. Buyers pay a premium for such innovative features on the Audi, too. Inside, the dashboard is very similar to the Rapid with the same layout and controls. Then there’s the good build quality and the hardwearing interior trim. Its seats could do with being more supportive, especially over longer journeys. Generally it has a competent if bland ride. There’s a folding armrest in the centre of the cabin, which is useful for long motorway jaunts when gear changes aren’t required. At speed the Toledo does buffet a bit in the wind but this is quickly forgotten when realising that this little gem returns over 50mpg at 70mph. Engine stop/start helps this model easily cover 700 miles on a tank of fuel. It’s pretty gutsy, too, hitting 60mph from standstill in just over 10 seconds. The five-speed box is as reasonable as you might expect; I don’t have a bad word to say about it. Families need a massive boot and they won’t be disappointed with the 550 litres of luggage space as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. If more room is required the rear seats fold down and the centre rear armrest conceals a hole for long, awkward objects such as skis or piping. Luxuries include

electric front windows, electrically adjustable wing mirrors and air conditioning. “Seat will be hoping that the Toledo can help dent the sales figures of popular established hatchbacks like the Ford Focus while pinning back newer entries in to this market such as the Volvo V40,” writes Parkers, the car experts. While it may have the appearance of a saloon, this latest version of the Toledo comes with a large, wide-opening rear hatch.” The Toledo, just like the Skoda Rapid, makes an ideal family proposition.

April 5th was the first anniversary of Busters Golf Society, as we first played as a new society at Alto Real golf course we decided to purchase a trophy to play for every April at the course , the trophy has aptly been named Busters Alto Real Trophy .

Although the weather forecast had predicted rain the first drops did not fall until our final four had left the eighteenth green , and even the heavy rain held off until we were safely seated in the Mini Golf bar in Quesada . The course was still recovering from the battering it had received from the recent bad weather and hollow tining but was still in reasonable condition, however I have to say that the greens staff need to

mark out area’s that are still recovering and make them GUR . The turnout for the event totalled twenty five player’s , although the elements were kind they did not did not seem to aid our scoring with our best score being 37 points .

Our nearest the pins were on the 5th hole Eamon. Gargan, on the 8th Simon Smith, the 10th Barry Grinsell and on the 17th Nikki Ead each receiving a sleeve of 3 Callaway golf balls. Best front nine was Simon Smith with 19 points, best back nine Dave Pretty also 19 points both received a shoe bag which was kindly donated by Keith Smith. Our best guest was won by Norman Wood with 37

points receiving cash and a sleeve of 3 Callaway balls, in third place was Alan Gifford by means of handicap with 31 points he received a cash prize. Our runner up was Preston Ives with 34 points also receiving a cash prize. Our winner for the day was Paul Cogan who received cash, a voucher from Alto Real and is the first holder of our Trophy, well done Paul and all of our players.

Finally I would like to thank the staff at the Mini Golf Bar for looking after us on our return. Next Month on the 3rd of May we look forward to playing at Vistabella . Barry Grinsell Secretary

cd montesinos After an exhausting journey we arrived at a sun drenched Murada on market day.

A little worried at playing both at altitude and in the midday sun, storm clouds gathered after only 2 minutes when Becker got booked and gave away a penalty for a clumsy tackle. Thankfully it hit the crossbar and sailed to safety and Monte started to take control.

The handicap racing season opened on Sunday 7th April, with 18 competitors in 7 boats all anxious to show a clean pair of heels. With a wind strength of 5 – 8 in a north westerly direction to blow away those winter blues and lubricate those muscles which have been hibernating since November last year, the racing got underway. It was not long before the CAT, normally up with the leaders, was having some difficulty and in danger of drifting on to the reef as the wind shifted around. But although a mishap was avoided the boat finished in last place. In spite of crossing the line first the Laser 2000 helmed by Tug Wilson and crewed by John Down had to settle for second place on corrected time. A worthy third place going to the Martin helmed by Tony Jones with Barry Young crewing. A break for lunch observed a wind speed exceeding 16 and promising more. A decision was taken to abandon a second race much to the disappointment of the Weta crew who went out to enjoy an unbridled ride on the crest of a wave whilst the remainder of the morning’s fleet took to the shore and enjoyed a beer or two. We hope the next race day is a little kinder. New members are always welcome, check the website www.sailingmarmenor.com or email sammracing@yahoo. co.uk SAMM continued... We say farewell to Semana Santa and hello to the new racing season. As an introduction all the groups have been busy getting themselves and their respective boats ready for combat. The Catamaran Group has been training up new skippers in order to offer more trips and this week was indulging in some race training. The three Balaton boats have been out of the water, cleaned and anti-fouled. They have their members standing by, rule book in one hand, stopwatch in the other. The Radio Controlled group continue to indulge in their own racing off the pantalan at CAR. As a prelim a group from the

Mojacar Sailing Club enjoyed a few days in a local hotel, bringing six Hobie Cats to indulge their sailing passion on the Mar Menor. The high winds of their first day saw several capsizes – our inland sea can be a bit of a challenge. But day two was more enjoyable with both the morning and afternoon sailing being less of a ‘fight’ and more of a jolly, managing to get round the islands. The non-sailors enjoying the local markets, the sunshine and beach. The handicap racing season opened on Sunday 7th April, with 18 competitors in 7 boats all anxious to show a clean pair of heels. GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB OPEN TOURNAMENT

The tournament went really well once again, the weather held and everyone had a great time as usual. There were some really tight games all through the competition, with several teams only losing by one shot. Quarter finals stage saw 3 Greenlands teams fighting for a place, plus a mixed team of Barry latham, Wendy Latham and Gail Watson. Greenlands members were: (1) Zoe Wilcock Keith Page and Jim Wilcock. (2) Margaret Dewar, John O’Brien and Chris Dewar. (3) Brian Tomlin, Florence and Mike Edwards. Congratulations to you all.

the resulting corner Fernando having picked up a yellow card for dissent a few moments earlier hit the crossbar with a thundering header. Just when we thought we had the game under control Murada scored from a corner when their centre forward was left unmarked to head home from close range. Monte kicked off the second half with the wind behind them and continued to press but by now Murada were also putting in plenty of effort if not a little too robust at times. On the hour Christian who was having a very good game in goal was injured diving at the feet of an opposing forward but recovered after treatment. Our little Brazilian Vas came on for

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Las Colinas - 03.04.13

Our stableford competition this week was at the prestigious course of Las Colinas. It was an early start of 9am off the 1st and 10th tees, the time did not put anyone off as we had a full complement of 40 members and guests. As always at Colinas, everything went smoothly with plenty of staff to look after us and get thing moving. I know that everyone always comments on the state of the courses we play, but I cannot resist joining in and saying that the course was in really good condition with quality fairways and fast greens, although some were hard to read and the improvements to access to greens and buggy paths has made a big difference.

There were only two incidents that were broadcast, one player tried to break his shoulder by taking a divot so big it cast a shadow three foot long and another player got a knock on the head from a ball flying over the green. Luckily they both survived the ordeal and managed to finish. There are always players who revels in these good conditions as the scores below reflect. The winners were: Gold Division: 1st Ian Stuart 39pts, 2nd Mike Johnson 31pts and 3rd Peter Morris 29pts c/b Silver Division: 1st Brian Rendell 34pts, 2nd Dicky Claeys 33pts and 3rd Alan Crain 31pts Bronze Division: 1st David Dodd 31pts, 2nd Damien Elliot 28pts and 3rd John Featherstone 27pts

A big thank you must go to our sponsors, Ibex insurance and Winning Express ( incorporating Sporting Arbitrage), and also everyone from Greenlands Bowls club, who gave their time to make this competition the success that it was. As this is tournament organiser Bobbie Sims swan song, we would like to thank her for all the hard work she has put in over the years, making this one of the most prestigious events on the Costa Blanca

sport Diago and received a rousing cheer from the travelling Monte fans. A further substitution saw Yonhi come on for Rubio and only a great save by Christian from a terrific free kick kept Monte in front. We then had several chances to seal the game but a combination of poor shooting and luck kept the score at 21 until Vaz put away a simple chance from 3 yards out to send the Full Monte fans home happy. It was a good game with a decent referee and 2 goalkeepers who both had excellent games. Vamos Monte. Next Sunday we are at home to Benejuzar with a 5 pm k.o. Howard Yeats.

Best guest: David Wightman 23pts NTPs: David Wightman hole 5, Malcolm Morrison hole 7, Dicky Claeys hole 10 and John Featherstone hole14. Five people scored a two, David Dodd, Padraig O’Brien, Brian Coultate, Malcolm Morrison and John Featherstone, they shared a pot of 38€. The free game draw was won by Gordon Cobb. Our next 18 hole game is at Altorreal for the Albie Lush, on the 17th, places are filling up so please get your name down as soon as possible and on the 1st May we are at Alicante where Mick the Gripp is sponsoring several holes. Semi finals were really tight, with Jim Wilcock’s team battling hard to the final end, eventually losing by 1 shot to a Country Bowls team headed by Gerry Gough, whilst the team from San Luis beat a Quesada trio of Peta Rhodes, Tom Hill and Bill Pain. The Final lived up to all expectations, with great shots from both sides. Well done to champions Colin Jackson, Allan Bowen and Mal Hughes from San Luis, with the runners up slot going to Lin and Charlie Watkins plus Gerry Gough from Country Bowls.

This week was the 2nd round of the Summer Championship and, again it was held on the Embalse de Pedrera. As stated last week the water was going down, well, what a change in the week the level had come up about 3ft. During the match the water level rose about 6 inches!!!!. So, it looks like now that they will be filling it maybe to the level it was!!!!!. ( No fishing then, until it drops ). The water temperature is rising slowly, but at present there is no sign of bleak or plenty of fish on the waggler line. Another rare day as well there were no blanks. However, the young Squalos of San Javier showed great courage and youthful confidence to show it was not going to be an easy game. They tackled the larger players with great effect and moved the ball quickly to their speedy wingers, thus stretching the opposition and sapping their energy. While the visitors had the advantage in the scrums, the Squalos had the edge in the lineouts. Using their weight advantage, the Tigers put the Squalos under pressure in the early scrums. However, after a high speed attack, it was No.8, Alejandro, who kicked a penalty. A quickly taken penalty by his opposite number, Jacobo, took advantage of a retreating defence to score unconverted try. Five minutes later, Alejandro kicked his second penalty and two minutes after that from a scum he added a try to give Los

After the restart, tensions on both sides became more obvious and several players had to be replaced on both teams. A Tigers forward squandered a scoring opportunity and Alejandro added to their disappointment by kicking a long range penalty to open up a nine point gap. In the dieing minutes of the game the visitors adopted more forward orientated tactics to drive towards the try line. They got their reward when big centre, Raphael forced his way through a very tried defence. It was too little too late but the overall cutting edge was won at scrum half, where Fran was quicker and stronger for Los Squalos. The final score was Los Squalos 14 - Tigers 10. (Los Squalos 14 - Tigers 10) This was a game that the Torrevieja Tigers had to win to keep their title hopes alive as the title will depend on their final game next week against Catagena and other results if Murcia win. This defeat has put a large dent in those ambitions and they came to the game having won 5 on the bounce.

Caballo Negro held on to third place, with a 6-2 win against Crazy Pinz. Top scorer for C.N. was Seppo Tuominen with a 596 hcp series. Team Finland lost the first 2 games to Cornish Pride, but fought back well in the third game, and managed to force a 4-4 draw. Top scorer for T.F. was Jukka Koskinen with a 649 hcp series, and top bowler for C.P. was Shane Winfield with a 642 hcp series. After a run of 5 wins, Los Bandidos lost this week, beaten 8-0 by Lucky Strike, top bowler for L.S. with his highest scores so far was Graham Lewis, with a 553 scratch, and 676 hcp series. Split Happens have now won their last four games, this week they beat Mixers 8-0, and are still chasing third place. After 4 defeats in a row, Carp-

R-Us won this week beating Splash 8-0. Mainly thanks to Margaret Hogg bowling her 4 best scores of the season, including a 223 hcp game, and a 583 hcp series. So the 2 teams in the cup final next week, Mixers and Splash, both lost 8-0 was it nerves, or are they just saving themselves ?. Sam Kearn, bowling for Bandoleros, had his best scores of the season, including a 597 hcp series, which helped his team beat Bar Mosquito 6-2. But the individual performance of the night went to Mirja Hakonen, bowling for Hall y Day, when she broke the ladies all time league record scratch series, with a 607 score. Her team beat Los Lobos 8-0, so now they are only 6 points behind the leaders, with 3 more weeks to go.

The latest manager accompanied by his assistant, ex-Torry legend Luis Blanco, seem to have turned the tide and the team were unbeaten in the last three games with a couple of 0-0 draws and a 3-0 victory. Torry desperately needed to win this game . Torry were without Rafa and Villanueva, out through suspension. The Torry manager selected Javi Tur in goal in preference to Manolo and went for what looked like an attacking line-up with young forward Patri getting a start ahead of defensive midfielder Burguillos who occupied the bench along with Luis Carlos, Sergio, Guillem and Manolo. Torrys starting line-up: Tur, Vicente, Jorge, Juanfran, Dani, Abel, Cuco Ros, Manu (Burguillos, 75 ‘), Gasch (Guillem, 90’), Koeman ,Patri (Luís Carlos, 21 ‘). The match was again played at the Nelson Mandela stadium and kicked-off, on yet another windy late afternoon, in front of a better crowd than usual of around the 450 mark. Torry had the wind behind their sails in the first half which they didn’t really take advantage of it with too many mis-hit or over-hit passes. Eldense tried to keep the ball on the deck and their passing and movement was generally better. The first 15 minutes were pretty even with netiher keeper being called into action. Eldense then had a good five minute spell when they threatened. After 21 minutes Patri limped off after taking a knock and was replaced by Luis Carlos. Torry then won a series of corners and from the final one Vicente struck the post with a fine header and the rebound was bundled into the back of the Eldense net but was disallowed by the ref for an infringement I didn’t spot. On 38 minutes an Eldense forward rattled the Torry crossbar with a header from a corner and the rebound was struck on goal but cleared off the Torry goal- line. At the beginning of the second-half Torry made a tactical switch with Jorge and Abel exchanging positions. With the wind at their backs Eldense pushed Torry back with Torry seemingly content to retreat to the edge of their area and try to soak up the wave after wave of Eldense attacks. After 56 minutes Eldense almost took the lead when a viciously struck free-kick from 40 yards almost caught Javi

Tur too far off his line but he just managed to get a fingertip to the ball and divert it over the top. After 63 minutes another Eldense free-kick from distance flew just wide of Javi Tur’s left upright. On 70 minutes the Eldense wide right front-man left Dani in his wake and struck the side netting when well placed. A minute later the Eldense left front-man went past Cuco Ros with ease and curled the ball just over the top from an excellent position. The pressure on Torry intensified and Torry then failed to clear a corner and it was ping-pong in the Torry box with at least 4 shots on target being blocked by desperate Torry defending and somehow Torry survived. After 79 minutes Burguillos replaced Manu to try and bolster the Torry rear-guard and stem the tide. A minute later Jorge was then showed a second Yellow Card and then a Red Card after apparently pushing an opponent in the Torry box when a free-kick was played in. Harsh for Torry who protested about the decision but the ref was not for turning. Torry still had another 10 minutes to keep Eldense out and did so valiantly and could have won it on 88 minutes when from a rare excursion forward Koeman was adjudged to have been pushed in the box when contesting a high ball. The ref pointed to the spot which brought strong protests from the Eldense players. The Torry fans held their breath and hoped and prayed that Torry would snatch all 3 points at the death. Koeman stepped forward and struck the spot kick down the middle and the ball was blocked by the keepers feet and ricocheted clear. The game came to a close with both teams having to settle for a point apiece. Harsh on Eldense after their dominant second-half performance but at the same time heart-breaking for Torry who could have won it at the very end. This weekend Torry travel to bottom of the table and seemingly doomed Catarroja and need to return home with all 3 points. However, there are no guarantees in this league as it keeps producing surprises. Catarroja won 2-1 away at league leaders Novelda last Sunday so it is by no means a foregone conclusion that Torry will win but they really need to. A relieved and then disappointed Darrylldinho following his adopted team in Spain claim a point which could have been all three. QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE BONALBA GOLF & SPA

1ST APRIL 2013 MATCH 5 This month’s match was held at Bonalba. On arriving at the course it was cold and windy, and although the sun came out as we stood on the first tee it remained very windy. Unfortunately due to the holiday period two of our teams were unable to play which just left Benijofar and Claptons. This was also Benijofar’s chance to secure the trophy on the penultimate game. With the wind gusting over 50k an hour this was going to be a very exacting day. The wind roaring in our face off the first tee looked as if the ball stopped in the air, nevertheless Benijofar managed to exact some good scores and Claptons

could not stop them winning the trophy for this season, but Claptons did manage to stop them having a clean sweep as the results below show. Congratulations to Benijofar Golf Society on retaining the title. Our thanks to Claptons for providing hospitality and prizes for nearest the pins. TMGS at El Plantio

It`s been a few months since our last visit to El Plantio, it was good to see that it is returning to its former glory. with calm, warm conditions you could be excused for expecting high scores, but this is El Plantio where the out of bounds looms perilously close to the right hand side of many holes, notably the 1st, indeed 2 of the 1st 4 tee shots found the farmers field on the right and I if you did managed to find the fairway there is always the water on the left of the green waiting to collect your approach shot. A little later in the round we found ourselves approaching the 17th tee only to be fired upon by a Norwegian member`s tee shot from the 15th!!! It came as no surprise that his group (2nd out) lost 2 full holes on the 1st group; they must have spent lots of 5 minutes looking for his ball (s) we had only 1 person break par, new member Mick Moore managed the best score of the day with 37 points.
