The weather, with outbreaks of rain throughout the day, did not prevent the procession of the Virgen de la Cabeza. At 12 noon the procession left the Santuario, taking the usual short route under the arch to reach the base of the Cofradía de Marmolejo, from where she was returned back to her Sanctuary. After the celebration of Mass, La Morenita was decorated with the gold medal, to mark her appointment as Jaén’s favourite daughter. During the procession there many expressions of great devotion for this emotive occasion, and as usual, there were moments of chaos when the anderos competed for the priviledge to carry the Virgin. There were no injuries, apart from a young man who sustained a minor wound to his leg.

A group of twelve Russian travel agents will be touring the Costa Blanca until May 3. They are on a Fam Trip, organised by the travel agency Rushouse Tour, intended to encourage provincial tourism from Russia to the Costa Blanca. The trip includes a visit to different Alicante towns like Torrevieja, Elche, Alicante, Benidorm and Orihuela Costa. The Alcalde de Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, with the Diputado Provincial de Turismo, the Vicepresidente Joaquín Albaladejo, and the Concejal de Turismo, Luis María Pizana, held a meeting with the guests, to introduce the cultural, sports, culinary, landscape and coastline of the city of Torrevieja. The group toured along the coast, the town of Torrevieja, the Puerto Deportivo de Marina Salinas, the museos flotantes del puerto, (floating museums) the Submarino ‘Delfín’ and the Patrullero de Vigilancia Aduanera ‘Albatros II’, as well as the Ciudad Deportiva de Torrevieja. Weekend events have had to be postponed due to bad weather. Two outdoor activities have suffered a date change due to inclement weather: The Día del Mayor 2013 has been transferred to Sunday, May 5, and Día de la Danza will now take place on that same day, May 5, in the afternoon.
Javéa
The festivities in honor of Jesús Nazareno began with a playful bous al carrer in the Placeta del Convent, before the rain called a halt to the festivities. The weekend celebrations were held at 11.00, 18.45 and 23.00 pm during Sunday. During the day volunteers from the Cruz Roja and Cáritas, in collaboration with the Cofradía, were positioned at the doors of Javéa’s supermarkets to collect food for the most needy of the municipality, who are being helped by these two charities. In the evening there was a mobile disco in the Plaza de la Constitución, with Santi Bertomeu, Aitor Galán y Pablo Gisbert. In the same place, at 22.30 horas, the Theatre Group Tot Rist de Duanes de la Mar will play a farce ‘El drama de la bolsería’. Wednesday is dedicated to children. The day starts with two ‘wake-ups’ at 9.00, in the Calles de Duanes with the Grup de Danses Portitxol and the other with ‘dolçaina i tabalet’ in the Centro Histórico, after which there will be a lunch and games for all children. In the evening there will be a ‘pasacalle’ walk to view the flower crosses adorning the portals of the town’s aldermen, who this year are Carlos Cholbi, Álvaro Morell, José Font, Francisco Caselles Catalá, Carlos Mata Cholbi, José Moya Ramacho, Miguel Bas Llidó, Jaime Gisbert Puig, Juan Bautista Chorro Torres y José Gil Puigcerver.

yobs smash up inside of plane ‘for a laugh’
Two teenagers have been arrested after deliberately causing 30,000 euros’ worth of damage to the inside of an Iberia aeroplane at Madrid’s Barajas airport. They managed to sneak through security controls in Terminal 3 to get to the runway and enter a stationary aircraft at around 03.45hrs on Saturday. Once inside, the two boys, aged 16 and 19, ripped off the seal around the emergency exit doors, blew up and then punctured numerous life-jackets and played with the torches and whistles attached to these to draw attention to cabin crew members in the event of a crash-landing into the sea. They also smashed up the landing wheel and the radio in the cockpit. When arrested and questioned, the boys said they ‘just did it for a laugh’ and ‘because it was the weekend’. The younger of the two will be tried by a youth court as he is under 18, which means he is likely to get a lighter punishment.
Four-year-old child drowns in river
A mother has been arrested after her four-year-old son drowned in the river Guadalquivir in Córdoba. The 49-yearold woman, a native of Córdoba, was rescued from the river along with her son, who was already dead when he was found further downstream. She was taken to hospital suffering from shock and hypothermia. It is believed she attempted to commit suicide and kill the child at the same time. But witnesses say the child was playing on the riverbank and fell in, at which point his mother jumped in the water to rescue him, and that both of them were calling for help. It has not been revealed whether the child’s father, a Mexican national living in Córdoba, has been contacted in relation to his son’s death. The mother is in hospital and said to be stable, but in observation and may be discharged this week if she recovers well. She will then be questioned by police.

There is a murmur once again, around the rocky coves of Portman: Oil. The small bay in the picture, is reached by a rough track, off the MU 320, between Portman and La Union. The track follows the El Gorguel dry (Most of the time!) river bed. If the motorist braves both passing over, then under, an arched bridge, which, for as long as I can remember, looks to collapse at any time, he or she will be rewarded, at the end of a twisting track, the sight of waves, crashing onto a beach of jet black “Lunar” sand. Under the shelter of the cliffs, there are a number of summer fisherman’s houses, built from the flotsam and jetsam that the Mediterranean, now and then, throws on the beach. An idyllic location. Sadly, or then again, dependent upon readers thoughts, not so, the Autoridad Portuaria de Cartagena, along with their friends at the giant petrol / gas refinery works, in the shadow of Cartagena, are again, if talk along the corridors of power, is to be believed, looking to invest over 1,000 million euro, to build a container port, in this little bay. The port would stretch between the Cola del Caballo and the Punta Escucha, totally destroying the Playa del Gorguel. A twin track rail tunnel would be blasted out of the Punta Escucha headland, to enable freight trains to connect with the main line at Cartagena. The port would look to employ some 3,000 employees. In it’s first year, I understand that two million tonnes of freight would be moved through the port, with some 3,500 million tonnes by year two. Portman Bay, just around the corner, are not happy. The large cost of moving all the polluted mine waste, would seem a waste of money, when the view from it’s newly created sand beach, would be container ships, plying backwards and forwards, and the very real chance of an oil spill. The ecologists are concerned about the wild life, along with the delicate plant life that thrives so well on these so far, uninhabited headlands. Is it sensible to offer work to 3,000 people in this corner of Spain? of course it is. Is it sensible to protect and preserve the beautiful coastline and marine life, along this section of the Mediterranean? Of course it is. What the answer is, I know not...

appeal to European Commission over repossessions
The head of a nationwide anti-repossession protest movement, Ada Colau, travelled to the European Union headquarters to fight for protection of homeowners facing a life on the street due to being unable to pay their mortgages. According to a report by ThinkSpain, Colau told officials that in Spain, ‘the government helps the banks and not the people’. During her visit in person to the head office of the European Commission, Colau condemned the ‘criminalisation’ of those who demonstrate against the situation. Spokeswoman for the Plataforma de los Afectados de la Hipoteca, or PAH (‘Mortgage Victims’ Association’), former actress and model Colau said she had decided to speak to the European Parliament personally to ‘show the face of the 400,000 people in Spain’ who are about to lose their homes, and the hundreds of thousands more who have already lost theirs. Willy Meyer, leader of IU (Izquierda Unida, or United Left) at the European Parliament says investigations will continue into the situation and a possible site visit by MEPs to find out
more – as was the case with the ‘land grab’ in 2004 – may be on the cards. “In Spain, there is a lot of Euroscepticism – here you have a chance to show Spain that Europe does indeed have a purpose,” Colau told him. “People buy property to live in because the State recommends it and, when the housing market crashes, the responsibility does not fall on the banks and finance companies but on ordinary and very vulnerable families,” she continued. “The government helps the banks, not the people. And when the people demonstrate against this, we are criminalised, likened to Nazis and terrorists, and given huge fines.” This latter comment caused a spat between Colau and MEP Carlos Iturgaiz (PP) who said: “She comes here like a wolf in sheep’s clothing and doesn’t give the full facts,” he stormed. Referring to the flash-mob sieges, known as escraches, staged outside the homes of politicians, Iturgaiz demanded: “Tell me whether or not you condemn these practices,” to which Colau replied, “I don’t have to
condemn anything.” A representative of the European Commission said the European Central Bank (BCE) had begun to draw up an ‘opinion’ relating to ‘best practice’ concerning mortgages which, once Brussels had approved it, would be legally binding. MEP Antolín Sánchez Presedo (PSOE) pointed out that Spain was already ‘taking initiatives’ such as an agreement the previous week to adopt an EU Directive relating to mortgage loans which guaranteed the ‘most favourable’ conditions for homeowners in the event of foreclosure and which ‘contemplated the option of handing back the keys and wiping
out the debt’, known as a dación en pago. Colau stressed, however, that this Directive was unlikely to solve the problem of mortgages in Spain since the legislation was geared up for ‘a situation of normality’ and that ‘what is happening in Spain is a situation of exceptional circumstances and emergency’. MEP Raúl Romeva (ICV) agreed that the current circumstances in Spain relating to mortgages ‘reflects a failure in the democratic system’. “The great drama we’re suffering in Spain is that what most of the country’s people are asking for has not been considered by a Parliamentary majority,” Romeva commented.
Woman Dies After Being Refused Medical Assistance Five Times In Less Than A Week
A full-scale inquiry is under way after a woman died in the doorway of her house despite having been turned away from health centres and hospitals on five occasions in as many days. At least four major associations are pushing for answers on behalf of Soledad, a Bolivian national living in Valencia, and believe there was a certain level of ‘racism’ involved. She went to her local GP clinic in the Ruzafa district of the city, the Fuente de San Luis, on February 15, suffering from a persistent cough, but was refused treatment after being told her SIP card – entitling her to State healthcare – was ‘invalid’. The associations now fighting her case posthumously say this was not the case at all. Two days later, she found she was struggling to swallow when eating and went to A&E at Valencia’s Hospital Clínico (pictured), where she was given a perfunctory physical examination and told there was nothing urgently wrong with her and to speak to her GP. When her condition was no better by February 18, she
returned to A&E and was not given any examinations whatsoever, but just told to ‘go to her GP’ as she had been advised the day before. Staff also told her that the Hospital Clínico was ‘not in her catchment area’ and that she should have gone to the Doctor Pese Hospital instead. Workers at the Clínico allegedly said: “If you turn up here in A&E again, we’re going to charge you.” Feeling steadily worse, that same day Soledad went back to the Fuente de San Luis health centre in her neighbourhood, where she was told again that the Hospital Clínico was not in her catchment area. She was not examined, but was given an injection for nausea and sent home. In the early hours of the next day, February 19, Soledad began to cough up blood and her husband tried to get doctors to go to their home to attend to her, but was told: “We don’t do home visits just because someone’s got a cold.” The couple went to the health centre later that morning,
where they were just told to take the same cough medicine she had been given the previous day. By the early hours of February 20, Soledad’s condition had worsened considerably, and her husband rang the emergency number, 112, to get an ambulance. But he was once again told: “We’re not sending out an ambulance just because you’ve got a cold.” Seeing that he would get nowhere, the woman’s husband called a man who worked for him and asked him to bring his car so they could take Soledad to hospital. This man also called for an ambulance, but was refused assistance, so he called the Local Police in Valencia. Officers, once on site, called the emergency line and demanded an ambulance ‘immediately’. Paramedics arrived two hours after the first call to 112 was made, by which time the woman was already dead. The exact cause of her death is not known, and a post-mortem is due to be carried out among other investigations to ascertain whether medical negligence was involved.

British paedophile fugitive caught in Benidorm
Expat In Barcelona Held Over ‘Biggest-ever Web Server Attack’
A Dutch expatriate in Granollers, Barcelona has been arrested in connection with the world’s largest-scale cyber-attack to date. According to the report by ThinkSpain, Sven Olaf Kamphuis, 35, is said to have launched a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on the non-profit-making mail company Spamhaus, which detects junk mail at source and blocks it. A DDoS attack is where massive volumes of data are sent to a web server – far more than it can handle – in an attempt to push it off the internet. In this case, over 300 Gigabytes per second (gbps) were launched at Spamhaus to clog it up and force its shutdown. Spokeswoman for the National Police in Barcelona, María Buyo, said investigations started in the Netherlands when a cyber-attack on the anti-spam site was detected due to huge attempts to access it, and that the UK and USA had also been affected. As Spamhaus tried to regain control of its servers, this created a huge slowdown of internet traffic around the world. Kamphuis, who was born in Alkmaar (Holland), is said to be the manager of the outfit
Cyberbunker and organiser of the group Stophaus, and to have travelled all over Spain in a van with various antennae to enable him to stage his attacks without trace. He apparently took exception to the fact that Spamhaus blocked a number of servers hosted by Cyberbunker, a company that claims it will host ‘anything except child porn or terrorism sites’. Spamhaus holds lists of blocked senders used by companies to detect the origins of spam to prevent them from jamming mail servers and filling up email boxes. The actions of Spamhaus annoyed Kamphuis, who told the media that it ‘did not have the right’ to choose ‘what should and should not’ be on the web. IT equipment, hard drives, computer software and mobile telephones were seized during a raid on Kamphuis’ flat in Granollers. The accused is expected to be extradited to the Netherlands. In the meantime, the National Police in Barcelona have praised Dutch, British and US authorities for their ‘excellent coordination’ which led to the case being swiftly resolved.

Village Near Barcelona Has 228 Cars Per Inhabitant! A village in the Barcelona province has 60,000 cars registered in it – despite only having 300 inhabitants. Aguilar de Segarra has no shops and only a handful of houses, but has 228 cars per resident, according to the census. Given that car tax is between just 10 and 15 euros a year – at least 10 times lower than in nearby towns and in the city of Barcelona – around 12 car-hire companies have registered their head office as being in Aguilar de Segarra. This means they save a fortune on tax on their vehicles. Just a few kilometres away, the village of Rajadell – which has 500 inhabitants – has 40,000 cars registered, or 80
vehicles per resident. Further down the coast, next door to Finestrat (Alicante), near Benidorm, the village of Relleu has just a few hundred residents and yet the number of cars registered there runs into five figures. Given that each and every town council is free to set its own car-tax rates, within the margins established by the ministry of tax, huge differences are seen throughout the country and if a person moves to the next town or village, he or she can often find the car tax charged is either half or double the amount payable in that person’s previous place of residence
A British man wanted by Interpol for sexual abuse of minors has been arrested in Benidorm (Alicante) after going on the run. The unnamed 47-year-old was sentenced to 10 years in jail by court authorities in Edinburgh, but managed to escape the clutches of the law and go on the run to Spain. Spanish authorities found that he may have been hiding out in Benidorm and set up a man-hunt all over the Costa Blanca. The paedophilia suspect had a European arrest warrant hanging over him. His identity and the full extent of his crimes have not yet been formally revealed.

Millions of diabetics could be freed from having to inject themselves several times a day by a oncea-year drug. Scientists have discovered a hormone which can boost the number of insulin-making cells by up to 30fold. This would ‘dramatically’ improve treatment for type 2 diabetes. This form of the condition, often triggered by weight gain, is becoming more common in the obesity crisis. In a report by the Mail Online, researchers from Harvard University believe the betatrophin hormone may even have the power
to halt type 2 diabetes in its tracks. ‘It could eventually mean that, instead of taking insulin injections three times a day, you might be able to take this hormone once a week or once a month, or in the best case, maybe once a year,’ they said. In patients with type 2, or adult-onset diabetes, cells in the pancreas do not make enough insulin, a hormone vital to the conversion of sugar into energy. Insulin they do make does not work properly. Initially, the condition is often controlled with a stringent diet and exercise regime. But many patients will suffer worsening health over time, eventually needing tablets or insulin
injections. Seeking an alternative to simply giving insulin, the US researchers looked for a way of boosting its production in the body. This led them to a hormone which they christened betatrophin. Given to mice, it raised the number of insulinproducing beta cells by up to 30-fold, reported the journal Cell. In addition, the ‘enormous’ number of new cells only made insulin when needed, which should lead to more natural blood sugar levels and better health. Researcher Professor Doug Melton said the discovery had left him so excited that he could hardly sleep. He added: ‘Our idea is

to cut down on processed meat Remember those recent headlines linking processed meat to premature deaths? Yes, we nearly choked on our bacon sandwiches when we read them, too! Researchers at the University of Zurich found that people who ate more than 160g processed meat daily - that’s roughly two sausages and a rasher of bacon - were 44% more likely to die from heart disease or cancer over the 13-year study period. The good news? You don’t need to give up completely - but do try to cut down, whatever your age. If everyone in the study had consumed no more than 20g processed meat each day, three per cent of the premature deaths could have been prevented, researchers insist

relatively simple. ‘We would provide this hormone, the type 2 diabetic will make more of their insulin-producing cells and this will slow down, if not stop, the progression of their diabetes.’ Drug firms have already seized on the breakthrough and the hormone could be tested on people in just three years. However, the need to show it would be safe and effective in large numbers of people means it is a decade away from the market. Yesterday’s Daily Mail reported how just one 12oz can of sugary drink a day can raise the risk of type 2 diabetes by a fifth. Complications of high blood sugar include heart disease, blindness, and nerve and circulatory damage. It is thought that one in 20 Britons has diabetes, with type 2 making up 90 per cent of the cases. The US work may also be useful in treating type 1 diabetes, which typically develops in childhood or adolescence.

60s and 70s charity night Breakaways Bar on Saturday 13th of April reverberated to the sounds of the 60s and 70s while their customers dressed up in similar fashion, all to raise funds for cancer charity AECC and for the fund set up to provide care and support for Finley baker, a young boy that suffers from the rare genetic disorder PTLS (Potocki-Lupski Syndrome). Food was organised by Jacqui from the Rocojuna and Soul Power provided the entertainment; with Soul and Mowtown music the dance floor was full all night. AECC benefitted to the tune of 422 Euros from the evening while the raffle raised 590 Euros for the fund for Finley. All of the raffle prizes were donated by local businesses and supporters and particular thanks go to Rani’s at the Citrus Centre, Playa Flamenca; Sofia’s Wellness Centre; My Piece of Cake; The Royal Oak; Zest’s Hair and Beauty; Morgan’s Bar; Flabaloss, Los Balcones, plus many others but too many to mention. Thanks go to them and all other supporters on the evening. AECC’s funds go towards subsidising the Early Detection of Cancer Screening programme. Your own screening can be arranged by visiting the Civic Centre at Playa at Flamenca on Wednesday mornings, 11.00 to 13.00 or by calling Maria Wilson on 633 487595. If you can spare a few hours per week to assist Maria in any way please call her on that same number.

THE SPAINIAC | The Beach of Silence | Candice Parsons
The greenery of Asturias is the most distinctive trait to initially stand out within the province, especially in comparison to the desolate plains of southern Spain. But when looking deeper into its surroundings, as Guardian writer Paul Richardson puts it; “... the region is a microcosm of Spain as a whole, cramming into its borders everything from snowy mountains to sandy beaches, humble tapas bars to avant-garde restaurants, and from raucous local fiestas to silent valleys where bears and wolves still roam.” In simple, Asturias summarizes Spain’s natural beauty, along with its unique culture, all in one region; and surprisingly, its cities don’t receive near as much promotion as cities like Barcelona, Madrid, or Seville, to name a few. A prime statement of this region’s beauty and rarity, and also a paradigm of its natural preservation, is The Beach of Silence located in the town of Cudillero. Astoundingly formed with cliffs and large rocks protruding out into the ocean like little sea islands,
the beach stretches out 500 metres long in the shape of a shell. The Beach of Silence must be explored by foot, and is entered through its steep staircase that follows down to the sand. It is a completely untouched space of nature, with no restaurants, shops, hotels or tourist propaganda of any sort invading its tranquillity. Amongst the locals of Cudillero, the beach is known as a former whale hunting ground where sailors would once gather and set themselves up. Nowadays, having water levels quite deep, activities such as scuba diving, diving and swimming amongst the small islands are enjoyed at this beach. Although above all, it is the peacefulness suggested in its name, and the escape this beach provides from the modernized world, that is enjoyed and respected most by its visitors. Simple, preserved, natural, and serene... and arguably an underrated hidden treasure of Spain.

Disclosure of assets (720 forms ) A GOOD REASON TO PAY YOUR NON-RESIDENT TAX Due to the new asset disclosure obligation (the infamous 720 form to be presented before the end of April 2013) a lot of property owners are asking the question: Are we tax residents in Spain or not? The way of finding this out is to ask the tax office to certify if they consider you a resident or non-resident. Remember though that if you are indeed a non resident you have the obligation of presenting a a non resident hypothetical income tax return . If you are not paying this tax it is necessary that you take control of the situation by contacting your solicitor or tax advisor. More than ever it is important that if you own a property in Spain and are a nonresident you present the non resident tax return correctly to avoid the Spanish tax authorities claiming that you are in fact a resident and therefore asking you why you have not presented a 720 form. (disclosure of assets forms) If you have doubts regarding if you are already paying this tax it is probably because you are not, as it requires the presentation of a tax form etc. The good news is that by law they cannot demand payment of more than four years back taxes. Our Advice: Start paying the tax because if you do not they will be contacting you with the risk of you not actually being hear to receive their letter etc. Not paying it may also instigate them to start considering you a tax resident. Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid and has offices in Mojacar and Almeria High Street.

AFFORD TO RETURN HOME?
So it’s time to return to the old country. But is it that simple? No, of course it’s not.... or is it? Well, you may well still have to sell your ‘casa’ Then if you do you may have to sell well below what you hoped for. Then there is the simple equation of how can we afford a place back home? Prices of houses throughout the UK have also experienced a downfall but maybe not as much as in Spain. The days of a descent return on your investment whether in the UK or Spain have at the most, gone. There are of course always the exceptions. So what is affordable back in ‘Blighty?’ There are many sites across the country and prices of park homes do vary depending on where you wish to live. As usual the south is more expensive than generally the North but of course there is the exception. The location and standard of the park site will reflect the price as will the size, number of bedrooms, and the condition. There are no shortages of new units at a price. However, it’s probably the best time to buy a re-sale home as many are extremely affordable. Take a middle of the road value based on a two bedroom re-sale home in the East Midlands. This may be between £55,000 to £90,000 depending on where it is, age of home and overall condition. In many cases there are no legal costs necessary as there is no land registration as the land your home sits on is rented by you. A simple letter of Sale & Particulars between the seller and buyer is normally acceptable. Park owners usually like a general site agreement and if and when you decide to sell-on there is the standard recognised 10% commission payable. Always take the time out to view your home and site before purchasing. Most parks belong to an association and therefore adhere to standards What is available for your money and for that matter, what is affordable? One solution could be in Park Homes. Not caravans or
holiday parks but ‘Residential Parks’ with established allyear around dwellings. Naturally prices differ depending on size and place but are usually considerably cheaper than bricks and mortar, yet with all the features of a lovely home. Most sites are for retired or semi-retired folk with certain limitations usually geared for the over 50’s. These parks are normally secure, with full infrastructure and a real sense of community. Many have lovely well kept surroundings and offer a quieter and considerably less expensive means of living being operated by a site owner with the support of local authority certification. One of our readers who came to Spain in 2003 moved back to the UK into a park home in North West Leicestershire: “This was a fantastic move for us and allowed us to move back and forth throughout the year,” said Ronnie. “And it became our home when we finally returned.” Overheads are much less than the a typical house as park homes are sited with a low payable ground rent. And because totally residential, you do pay council tax but at the lowest rate band for your area. Most homes are one or two bedrooms and usually fully fitted with everything you need. If you become in a position to purchase, take a look at a park home. You’ll be surprised what your limited funds could bring you and make moving back an affordable and attractive possibility. Meeting at the Lo Monte hotel in Pilar de la Horadada it was just a short drive the the first port of call, Museum Municipal, Palacio Baron de Benifayo, San Pedro del Pinatar which contains many Roman artifacts and fossils found both locally and across the regions. The museum also has a collection of antiquities from the world of the cinema and includes rare film posters, colour and black & white stills along with cinema projectors from a bygone age. The collator is a classic car owner himself and was looking forward to seeing ours. Unfortunately due to the weather most of them had stayed at home and their owners had come in their every day drive. Nevertheless, he was very happy to photograph those that were there. Next it was off to Los Alcazares and the Museum Aerona’utico Municipal which contains artifacts, models and pictures from the airfield including maps from the airfield as it was in about 1915. There is also a short film which could well have been at home in the last museums cinema section. There are also a pair of antiaircraft AK-AK type mobile guns out back. Short and sweet but well worth a visit. Entry to both museums is free. So Roberto, visiting museums on a rainy day was not such a bad idea after all. Thank you. Then it was round the corner for lunch, typically Spanish with bread, alioli and salad prior to the three courses, ample wine & beer followed by coffee. Excellent value at a tenner. And so ended another splendid day out for the Freewheelers in spite of the rain

ON SATURDAY 6TH APRIL HARRYS BAR HELD A FUN DAY AND RAISED THE FANTASTIC AMOUNT OF 1500 euros FOR THE AECC (THE EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST, CERVICAL AND PROSTATE CANCER) The crowds started to arrive early in the day and were more than generous for buying raffle tickets to win some of the super prizes on offer. Top prize was a flat screen TV won by Jan and Richard Toptalo on their annual 3 month stint in Quesada. Also on offer was a tablet which the young ones were desperate to win but was won by regular octogenerian Joy. But there were lots and lots of other prizes generouslydonated by local business;s and customers of the bar. Particularly the Studio gym who gave gym memberships, beauty treatments and lots more vouchers towards the raffle. The Quesada Pink ladies were out in force to help sell the raffle tickets plus Martin had them doing a catwalk to the delight of the audience. Also Dance Extreme performed 3 or 4 routines ranging from the 3-4 year olds to the young teenagers performing urban dance routines at its best. Kevin the boss was busy all day cooking on the BBQ to proved delicious burgers and hotdogs. Radio Novas very own Martin and Kevin broadcast live from 1 til 4 then Martin performed with his own band the Criminales then later Martin and Baz did a greatBlues Brothers tribute for the very first time. Later in the evening Sue Haywood Barratt performed a few songs followed by karaoke. The night went on until midnight but everyone agreed although it was hard work it was well worthhile. All the staff at Harrys worked exceptionally hard to make the day a resounding success. If you want to hold a fund raising event for the AECC please contact Quesada Pink lady organiser Debbie Weedon on 96 6719847 or email okie2002spain@ yahoo.co.uk

CAMPO LIFE WITH JENNI....... We continue, this week, with more threatened species that have dropped to dangerous levels in Spain and although I do not enjoy being the bearer of bad news it is important for us, as a society, to realise that what we do, and how we live, has a huge impact on the animal, bird and plant life. It is this realisation, that spurs people into action, and I am thankful, that there are people who do care, and want to preserve the amazing diversity of species that this country has to offer.
It is the turn of the Imperial and Bonelli Eagle and both are victims of progress. Power lines and pylons being the main topic of conversation. Unfortunately not only are these birds threatened due to lack of food sources and habitat loss, but they, and many more raptors aside, are killed by electrocution or by colliding with power lines. This is one of the main causes of death for these endangered birds. A full report of this problem has been written by ‘Raptor Researcher’, Pascual Lopez, formerly with the University of Valencia, who is now a lecturer in Zoology and Vertebrates Zoology at University of Alicante (Spain). He comprehensively

The other danger is the collision with power lines which represents the third highest cause of mortality for the Bonelli’s eagle. In the last decade more than 200 Bonelli eagles have been killed by electrocution due to the collision with power lines. This can affect all species of birds, however there are some species which are more prone to die, mainly due to their flight behaviour. Since 1974, a total of 158 Spanish Imperial eagles have been killed. Over 40% have been attributed to have been killed by electrocution. Many countries including Spain are making power lines and pylons safe in areas that are close to nests but this does not solve all the problems as it completely ignores the dispersion of juvenile birds. “Measures aimed at protecting just one part of the population are clearly ineffective and may lead to a waste of financial resources that could be applied more efficiently if juvenile birds and floaters would be taken into account.” It is also important to note that inexperienced immature and subadult birds as well as females are more prone to electrocution than other birds. In the case of the Spanish Imperial eagle females formed 78,12 % of eagles killed on power lines.

However if the bird had one foot on the original wire, and the other foot on, for example, the ground or on a different wire with less voltage, the bird would be electrocuted. So how do the Raptors then get electrocuted? This is mainly due to the way they hunt. Raptors usually perch on pylons and use them as look out points as they are elevated over the terrain to search for prey. Pylons are normally installed in agricultural landscapes and open areas, where the human activity has caused the clearance of the natural vegetation and even deforestation. It is easy therefore to see that electrocution can easily occur when birds perch on pylons which components have not been covered or when the birds touches the cables and the pylon at the same time.
covers this issue, and I will highlight a few of these points in today’s article. It is important to understand how and why the raptors are so severely affected. In the first instance “electrocution of birds has been reported to be one of the most important mortality factors worldwide”. I did not realise that is was a problem, as it is not unusual so see lines of birds perched on power lines. Even though the wires are not insulated, they do not get electrocuted, because the wire is the only thing they are touching. As long as both of the bird’s feet are on the same wire (or wires of the same voltage), the bird is safe. The current doesn’t have anywhere else to go, so the electricity won’t pass through the bird – it stays on the path of least resistance, the wire.
In the Region of Murcia, eagle owl, jackdaw, short-toed eagle, goshawk, common buzzard and carrion crow are the species with higher number of carcass victims of electrocution. However, when relating number of carcasses to the abundance of each species in Murcia, goshawk is the most affected species, followed by eagle owl, short-toed eagle, Bonelli´s eagle, common buzzard and golden eagle. Clearly, much work is to be done, but what has been achieved has been significant. “ For example, since 1992 until 2009 a total of 6560 dangerous pylons were made safe along 1446 km of power lines in Andalusia The total budget for these measures amounted 2.624.000€ (an average of 400€ per corrected pole). Encouragingly, the Spanish Imperial eagle population in Andalusia has increased from 31 to 60 pairs in the same period. This figure represents slightly over half of the total investment in conservation of the species for this period. This demonstrates that solving bird electrocution is an affordable problem if political interest is shown and financial investment is made. Furthermore, other avian species can be benefited from these measures”. Driving down the motorway to Murcia yesterday, I was pleased to note the use of the ‘safe pylons’ a huge step in the right direction!

The European Commission will restrict the use of pesticides linked to bee deaths by researchers, despite a split among EU states on the issue. There is great concern across Europe about the collapse of bee populations. Neonicotinoid chemicals in pesticides are believed to harm bees and the European Commission says they should be restricted to crops not attractive to bees and other pollinators. But many farmers and crop experts argue that there is insufficient data. Fifteen countries voted in favour of a ban - not enough to form a qualified majority. According to EU rules the Commission will now have the option to impose a two-year restriction on neonicotinoids - and the UK cannot opt out. The Commission says it wants the moratorium to begin no later than 1 December this year. The UK did not support a ban - it argues that the science behind the proposal is inconclusive. It was among eight countries that voted against, while four abstained. Wild species such as honey bees are said by researchers to be responsible for pollinating around one-third of the world’s crop production. There is heated debate about what has triggered the widespread decline in bee populations. Besides chemicals, many experts point to the parasitic varroa mite, viruses that attack bees and neglect of hives. After Monday’s vote the EU Health Commissioner, Tonio Borg, said “the Commission will go ahead with its text in the coming weeks”.
“I pledge to do my utmost to ensure that our bees, which are so vital to our ecosystem and contribute over 22bn euros (£18.5bn; $29bn) annually to European agriculture, are protected.” Greenpeace EU agriculture policy director Marco Contiero said Monday’s vote “makes it crystal clear that there is overwhelming scientific, political and public support for a ban. “Those countries opposing a ban have failed.” An EU vote last month was inconclusive, so the Commission proposal went to an appeals committee on Monday - and again the countries were split on the issue. Some restrictions are already in place for neonicotinoids in France, Germany, Italy and Slovenia. The three neonicotinoids are clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiametoxam. A report published by the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) in January concluded that the pesticides posed a “high acute risk” to pollinators, including honeybees. However, it added that in some cases it was “unable to finalise the assessments due to shortcomings in the available data”.

property guide.... Neater Heater:
Norway’s Answer To Having A Warm Home In Winter!
Neater Heater was started in a “Victor Kiam” moment. Remember him? “I was so impressed with the product that I bought the company”. Having struggled unsuccessfully with several different styles of electric heaters, Richard and Tony accidentally discovered Neater Heaters in the home of a Norwegian friend of theirs. Neater Heaters are slimline wall-mounted electric convector heaters that combine state of the art technology, Scandinavian design and build quality, with Norwegian understanding of how to stay warm in winter. They differ from most of their rivals by using an Extruded Aluminium element, designed with a large surface area, to heat the air in your room directly without having to go through an intermediary medium such as oil. The cold air at the bottom of the room is drawn into the heater where it is directly heated by the element, rises, and exits through the vents at the top of the heater. This causes a convection current leading to a continuous circulation of heated air. This means that all the energy generated by your valuable euro is used to heat your room, and not the carcass of the heater, or the oil inside it. Because of the design and the technologically advanced materials, this can all be achieved at a lower element temperature, thus generating more heat per kilowatt. What this basically means for you is: Neater Heaters can make you warmer than most of the competition can for less money. Neater Heaters can warm a much larger area than most of the competition can for the same money. Neater Heaters Can be viewed and purchased from one of our numerous distributors throughout the region.

The Andalusian government have approved a decree under which, in the most extreme cases, the homes of the most needy families subject to eviction proceedings initiated by banks, will be embargoed by the region for a maximum of three years. The Andalusian commissioner responsible for public works and housing, Elena Cortés, said the government also plans to impose fines of up to 9,000 euros on banks and real estate companies that leave homes which are fit to live in empty. Cortés said the measures aimed at “meeting social needs” are backed by existing legislation. Fines imposed for leaving homes empty will be used to help house people. The decree also reinforces a system of subsidies to allow families to rent homes. The commissioner praised the efforts of pressure groups such as the MortgageVictims Platform (PAH) and labour unions, to stem a flood of evictions by banks. There have been an estimated 86,000 evictions in Andalusia since 2007. Individuals with empty property will not be subject to the decree, nor will this apply to second homes, tourist accommodation and property rented out on a temporary basis. Individuals will also be encouraged to put empty homes they own on the rental market by providing them with tax breaks and insurance cover for unpaid rent and damage to their property. The decree, which came into effect on Thursday, will subsequently be debated in the regional assembly with a view to its being passed into law. The initiative is aimed at getting an estimated 700,000+ empty homes in the region onto the rental market. Of this figure, an estimated 350,000 to 500,000 properties are owned by corporate bodies, mainly banks and real estate companies. The government is also aiming to increase its pool of available housing at affordable rents. The decree specifies that a home will be deemed to be empty if it lacks contracts for the supply of water and electricity or the consumption of these is very low. Other factors that will be used to determine if a property is empty include whether mail addressed to the home is redirected elsewhere. The government will have to demonstrate that a home has been unoccupied for six months in order to declare it empty. The administration plans to set up a register of empty homes and a system of inspection to verify if a property is unoccupied. The embargo of a home will only apply to situations which affect the permanent home of a family and where eviction could lead that family to find itself in a situation of “social exclusion”. Such cases will also only apply when a significant deterioration in the economic circumstances of the family since the mortgage on the home was granted, can be demonstrated. Embargoes will only be enforced in cases where a family’s income is no more than three times the monthly benchmark amount for entitlement to social assistance and grants, which for this year has been set at 532 euros per month. a Marketing Manager and a Fundraising Manager to support members of the Trustee Board Both positions are voluntary and neither requires a full time commitment. The Marketing Manager role would suit a retired marketing professional. The role includes developing and maintaining a marketing and public relations programme which raises awareness of Samaritans in Spain and generates additional funding. The Fund Raising Manager will be required to work in cooperation with the Marketing team, organising and coordinating events to raise funds and awareness of the SiS. The organisation operates from its new Multi-Purpose Centre in CC Punta Marina Torrevieja which houses the telephone call centre with the capacity to handle the recently introduced 24/7 service, a new Drop-in Centre for those who prefer face to face contact, and equally important a new Charity Shop to generate funds so essential to maintaining the current and future service. The successful candidates will ideally be within easy reach of Torrevieja and the centre.

RASCALS IN FINAL REHEARSALS
Those wonderful Rascals, are very close once again, to completing their lengthy rehearsal schedule for their forthcoming series of shows “I REMEMBER IT WELL” It is only just over a week when the curtain on the first show in Los Montesinos goes up. The hammers, nails and paint brushes have been in overdrive this last few days putting final touches to the scenery. The Costumes are almost ready and typical of Rascals style they look absolutely splendid. This year’s show is a wonderful tribute to Rascals both past and present who have performed for local charities for twenty years raising over 120,000 Euros. There can’t be many theatre goers who have not tapped their feet of clapped their hands to the fantastic lyrics and music at shows such as “My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Annie get your gun” to name just a few of the chosen excerpts from this year’s show. The first shows are at the School of Culture and Music in Los Montesinos next Friday and Saturday 3rd and 4th of May, Tickets are selling well, but there are still some availabilities, so if you don’t want to be disappointed please give Sue a call on 96 678 4874 to reserve your seats now. CRESCENDO CONCERT AT LOS MONTESINOS CHURCH 20th APRIL
“Well done Crescendo, and well done Irene Oliva, for yet another excellent concert on Saturday 20th April. The Uplifting ‘Gloria’ reverberated around the delightful church of Los Montesinos which was packed to the gunnels. The sweet tones of ‘Cantique Jean Racine’, the rousing ‘I have a Dream’ and the wistful ‘Va Pensiero’ were followed by the meaningful ‘I Believe’ among others. The old favourite and toe-tapping ‘Swinging with the Saints’ was included as were a couple of interesting ethnic songs. Although the men were heavily outnumber by the ladies, they certainly held their own, especially when singing the ‘I Believe/Ave Maria’ combination, and ‘Locus Iste’ was a very fitting number for the church setting. Dear Editor...
A gentleman came into my shop whilst I was busy serving customers advised me he had to check the fire extinguisher which was up for renewal. I asked for identification which he produced but was in a different name to the usual one, when I queried this he advise me previous company had ceased trading. Whilst talking to him and serving customers his accomplice came in and took the fire extinguisher bringing back a new one I was then charged 18euros. When they had gone and I finished with customers I looked at the factura and noted no nif number on it. Company name was EXPAIN EXTINCION - his name FRANK GOMEZ. When I got home I looked up the company name only to find a list of companies he had scammed, this site is definitely worth a look at: www.lifeinbeniajan.wordpress.com/2010/02/16cuidado-co-laestafa-de-los-extintores Pat Davis thebowlsshop@hotmail.com

Today, Thursday 25th April, 24 of us played an individual Stableford competition at Alenda Golf course for the “Pedro Oversfield Memorial cup”. Pedro(Peter) Oversfield, was a founder member of our society and a much loved character who always had a joke to tell. His wit was as sharp as a knife, and we truly miss him and his antics. We all send our best wishes and regards to his wife Peggy, who unfortunately couldn’t be present for the awards ceremony. The day started off a bit gloomy, with rain clouds threatening to drench us, however we got away early and somehow we managed to dodge most of the rain clouds and all got back to

Hello
Nearest the pin Dave Harwood. Nearest the pin in 2 John Saunders. Longest drive Terry Rogers.
A goal from leading scorer Jose Ruben in first half injury time was enough to secure a deserved away victory for Mazarron at local rivals Olimpico de Totana. The game opened quietly with neither side able to make much impression until Mazarron keeper, Jose Iker, was forced into making a splendid save in the 13th minute to turn a close range shot from 6 yards around the post. In the next minute Mazarron went close when Cecilio’s shot on the turn just cleared the bar. After 25 minutes a free kick taken by Jose Da who was returning for his first game of the season, caused havoc in the Totana defence but Cecilio was just unable to force the ball home in the ensuing scramble.

Alfie’s Golf Society set off for the April monthly meeting at Mar Menor with the early morning topic of conversation not being the golf, but would the weather hold? Grey skies everywhere but on arrival no rain, and all 26 players and 2 guests teed off without the waterproofs being required ...yet ... it had to come eventually ... and it did ! 16 players out of the 28 completed their round, and considering the conditions weather-wise,
the 33 points posted by Ian Connell was a very creditable score indeed. 2nd place was taken by Peter Golder. Nearest the pin on the 2nd was won by Mick McManus (guest), and the 17th by Steve Mold. Gudlaugar (Gulli) Kristjannson smoked one on the 10th to take the longest drive prize. Many thanks to Anita & Linda from Alfie’s for providing the usual excellent post match buffet, and to Mike Probert of Costa Blanca

Mazarron on the attack and on 49 minutes Barrachina’s cross was headed just wide by Cecilio. At the other end Jose Iker was rarely troubled but had to dive smartly to his right to clutch a Totana free kick. Mazarron should have clinched the game in the 75th minute when Jose Da and Ruben combined on the right and Alfonso somehow managed to miss the target from 2 yards from Ruben’s excellent cross. Totana were reduced to ten men when one of their players was dismissed for a second bookable offence and Mazarron eventually emerged as deserved winners to the delight of their excellent and vociferous crowd of travelling supporters. The league AGM is being held at the Asturias Restaurant, on Thursday May 2nd, 10am. With the league starting in 2009, with just 6 teams this has grown each year with 39 teams , a 6th division is being formed for the Autumn, with 7 teams already expressing interest, any other entries are invited with a closing date around September. Although this started with British teams we now have a good mix of Belgium, French, Danish, and Swedish playing together, creating an European league. EL RANCHO PETANCA A new team has been formed at El Rancho, they will seek membership to the league, which is good news as this venue was once a major player
in the league with many top championships being staged. They meet on Sunday mornings at 11am. 11th EUROPEAN DAY PETANCA IN TORREVIEJA This long standing competition is being held at the Jardin del Mediterranno in Torrevieja, on Sunday May 12th. TORRY’S REVIVAL IN FORTUNES CONTINUES
Last Sunday Torry travelled north of the city of Valencia to play mid-table Borriol. On the bench for Borriol was their President, the famous golfer Sergio Garcia who hails from the town and it was hoped if he got on he wasn’t as skilful with a football as he is with as golf club. Torry were again without the injured trio Abel, JuanFran and Manu Amores. Torry welcomed back Villanueva after his lengthy suspension and included new signing Pepitiu in goal. Pepitiu has played for Santa Pola CF in Regional Preferente this season and is the brother of the popular ex-Torry player Manu. Torry were looking to extend their unbeaten record to 4 and climb further away from the relegation zone. Torrys starting line-up: Pepitiu, Vicente, Burguillos, Rafa, Dani, Jorge, Cuco Ros, Gasch (Guillem 45 ‘), Luis Carlos (Sergio 71’), Villanueva (José Manuel 82 ‘), Koeman. The game kicked off on a cold and wet and windy lunch-time in front of a small crowd of around 150. The game became a midfield battle with both defences generally on top but with Torry having the edge. Villanueva started brightly on his return while Koeman was again putting himself about up front. Vicente picked up an early booking for holding back the speedy Borriol left winger who was posing a threat down the left. Gasch had a good effort saved and then Cuco Ros came close when he hit the post from a corner. Jorge then had a header on target saved from another set piece. Koeman then dispossessed a defender and had his shot on target turned round the post by the home keeper. The first-half came to a close with Torry having had the better of the play. Young Guillem
replaced Gasch at the start of the second-half and for once was given a decent period of time on the pitch to make an impact instead of a few minutes. Borriol also brought on Sergio Garcia for the second period. Borriol had the ball in the Torry net after a break forward but the effort was disallowed for offside. Villanueva then had a good chance from an acute angle which he put wide. Koeman then hit the post after a good delivery from a freekick by Dani. Koeman had the ball in the back of the Borriol net after a knock-on by Jorge but it was ruled out for offside. Koeman then had the best opportunity of the match to seal victory for Torry from another Dani free-kick but his effort was well saved by the Borriol keeper. The game ended in stalemate with Torry being disappointed not to have claimed all three points. The new keeper Pepitiu had a competent debut and Rafa was again rock solid at the heart of the Torry defence. As a result of the win Torry remain in 13th place in the table, now 6 points clear of the 4th and final relegation spot, with the threat of relegation dissipating with 4 games to go. Torry played 3rd placed Elche Ilicitano at home last night and “fingers crossed” will have got a positive result. At the weekend Torry have another long journey to the north of Valencia to play CD Llosa who are equal on points with Torry. Let’s hope Torry get something out of the game. A satisfied Darrylldinho following his adopted team in Spain earn another valuable point. For info about Torry visit the Torry Army website www. fctorrevieja.net
