Drugs smuggler arrested

Drugs smuggler arrested in Spain after escaping from jail last year. Gerard Hagan, 29, a convicted drug smuggler, was apprehended outside a gym near Estepona. He went on the run as he was being transferred from an Irish prison to the UK where he was being held for attempting to smuggle £350m of cocaine into Cork, Ireland.

He had been on the run since escaping Kirkham Prison in Preston, Lancashire on

July 6, 2012. He was taken to a nearby police station so he could be formally identified before being driven to Madrid for an extradition hearing. In the meantimeHagan, from Liverpool, was in custody in a jail near the Spanish capital where he will be held before being flown back to Britain. He was paid £5,000 to take part in the drugs smuggle, organised by ex-Met Police drugs squad detective Michael Daly who was later jailed for 22 years. ExpatZIn Spain

restoration of the sierra minera Aria and Portman Golf are to restore 11 kilometres of the Sierra Minera. The multinational mining company and Portman Golf are to negotiate an agreement to invest over 200 million euros over the next two decades. Sierra Minera Cartagena -La Union, one of the richest mineral sources in the history of the Iberian Peninsula, will undergo a change in its 3,000 year old appearance if the project bears fruit and mining is started by the multinational German-owned Aria and the local Portman Golf, successor to Peñarroya, the current majority owner of land in the area. The giant extractive work that has been undertakenin the Sierra Minera over the centuries has radically changed the original landscape of this mountain range on the eastern side of theCordillera Bética. Over the generations millions and millions of cubic metres of earth have been displaced, and

thousands of cuts have been carved into the bedrock to create the present exceptional and unique lunar landscape of ochre. Aria and Portman Golf say that work ‘would extend over more than two decades with an investment of over 200 million euros.’ The Consejería de Cultura hopes to give the Sierra the status of Paisaje Cultural Protegido, in a future bid for the status of World Heritage Site. The only other site of this type is the Sierra de la Tramuntanain Mallorca. Four types of work would be undertaken: removing useless mining structures, primarily marshes and ponds; stabilisation of structures; restoration of structures through reforestation consistent with the morphological processing environment and land, and channelling of watercourses to prevent flooding. laverdad.es

house thieves broken In El Palmar a band of Romanian house thieves has been broken up. Four members of the band were arrested, and stolen goods were recovered. The band, two men and two women, was centred in El Palmar, and committed robberies all over Spain. Officers of the Brigada Local de la Policía Judicial de Elche (Alicante) arrested the four people in a house in the village of El Palmar. So far ten robberies committed in homes and Elda (Alicante), Albacete, Yecla (Murcia)

and Logroñohave been cleared up. The women would note the addresses of houses that were unoccupied, and the men would commit the burglaries and market the goods immediately. A large quantity of stolen goods were recovered, including a vehicle, numerous jewels and watches, computers, mobile phones, 650 euros, as well as falsified documentation and tools for committing theft, such as radial master keys, drills and screwdrivers. laverdad.es

Police act on a Botelleo Halloween

Seventeen officers were involved in ‘discouraging’ young people gathered for a ‘botelleo’. They had gathered at midnight with the intention to hold a botelleo in the Cartagonova stadium concourse, but the Policía Local and Nacionalguarded the area from early evening to prevent them gathering. Happy Birthday Samaritans UK

SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2013

T.A.A.B.S christmas carol list

Samaritans UK is just celebrating its 60th Birthday, and what a celebration it will be. It began with a reception at Clarence House on Wednesday 1st may 2013 where His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Patron of Samaritans, hosted a reception to launch the celebrations marking 60 years since the charity received its first call in November 1953. Stephen Fry and Joanna Lumley where also present. It seems incredible that a service employing 21,000 volunteers in 210 locations could have grown from so small a beginning. Just 60 years ago on 2nd November 1953 Dr Chad Vara picked up that first phone call. He was, in his own words, “a man willing to listen, with a base and an emergency telephone”, that number was MANsion 9000. Since that time the Samaritans have grown and changed with the times. Chad continued to lead many aspects of the service, including the selection and training of volunteer’s right up till 1974. His continued involvement with Samaritans through the years has included working on the development of a network of international support services which mirror the Samaritans’ work in the UK. And it is through this support that Samaritans in Spain has grown. Sadly Chad died in a hospital in Basingstoke, on 8 November 2007 just four days before his 96th birthday Samaritans in Spain began as an idea by Steven Ashley. The project began in September 2005 and, after many meetings and much correspondence between the originators and Samaritans UK culminated in the launch of the Costa Blanca Samaritans service in Spain in July 2008. The first branch opened in Benissa, for three evenings a week. This was followed by the opening of the second branch in Villamartin in January 2009. In March 2009 the service increased their opening hours to five evenings a week and this was further increased in January 2010 to seven evenings a week. In mid 2012 the service became centralised in Villa Martin, and in February 2013 the Samaritans moved to a joint centre of call centre, drop-in centre and charity shop at Punta Marina.

From January 2013, the service increased to a full 24 hours a day service, 365 days a year. The service now also offers email support, mail support, prison visiting, two monthly drop-in centres one at the office for the Urbanisations in San Fulgencio in San Fulgencio on the third Thursday of each month from 10.00am to 1.00pm, and starting in November 2013 one at the library in Benijófar on the second Tuesday of each month from 10:30am to 1:00pm. And of course there is the drop-in centre at the Samaritans Drop-in centre, charity centre and call centre at Punta Marina, Punta Prima, near Torrevieja. This is open for drop-ins between 10:00am and 2:00pm Monday to Saturday. The name was changed to Samaritans in Spain recently to reflect the fact that the service is available to callers throughout Spain. If you would like to help there are many ways to do this. You can volunteer to be trained and become a listener by filling out an application form at the drop-in centre, by filling out the application form on the website Samaritansinspain.com, or by sending an email to joinus@costablancasamaritans.com .You can also contribute items to the charity shop at Punta Marina. ELVIS IS (ABOUT) TO LEAVE THE BUILDING!

Elvis Presley, a.k.a. Brian Jenkins, contacts “Barnes Bulletin” to announce that after many years, walking the boards, of many a stage, here in Spain, he is to hang up his Elvis suit, for the last time, following a farewell performance, booked at the Country Bar & Grill, La Fuente, Torremendo, Sunday lunchtime, November 17th.. Around the Costa Blanca / Calida, there is, it must be said, a “Caucus” of Elvis Presley “Clones”, some good, some passable with some best forgotten. Brian is up there, with the best. Over the years, Brian has raised countless euros for charities, and although now passing the “Three score year and ten” landmark, hopes to continue these good deeds, but at a more gentler pace. To enjoy a traditional Sunday lunch, and watch Brian Jenkins, a.k.a. Elvis Presley, walk slowly into the sunset, for the last time, best reserve

Bric-a-brac, jewellery, raffle, home baking, mulled wine, mince pies, hot dogs, auction, linen, books, games, tombola, tea & coffee etc. Proceeds to local charities.

If you fancy the idea of getting really exclusive but not expensive Christmas presents before the rush, take a trip to Alicante town centre. There, in the Avenida Federico Soto, more or less in front of the Corte Inglés, some 40 stalls with real “Artesanía de Autor” work will set up shop. Real craft work, because “Artesania de Autor” means that the person selling the work is the person who made it. Nothing imported and nothing from a factory. The regional craft association Amata has been holding real craft fairs all over Spain these last twenty years and has built up a large circle of aficionados in the craft world. Amata selects participants after looking at the quality of their work and considering how they will fit in - the market should not have too many people selling the same sort of material. A good variety of ceramics, leatherwork, paper, silver, macramé, wood, original jewelry, fabrics, forged iron, handbags, cushions, wooden toys is to be found on one of their markets. This market in the middle of Alicante is especially interesting because many of the participants will be working at their stall. Watch Chema bind books, José carve bone and horn to make spoons or costume jewelry, Thomas painting T-shirts, Diego decorate boxes with filigree paper and Ramón weave intricately patterned buttons with Celtic motifs. Often they can add to or change part of their design to suit the taste or need of a potential customer - a name, another colour or perhaps a slightly different sized. Many of the pieces to be seen in this craft fair are the sort of thing you will see in expensive art galleries where you pay a lot more. Here you can buy directly from the craftsman or woman - cheaper, more fun and a lot more interesting. And the people in the stalls much prefer to see where their lovingly made articles will find a new home. Most of these people choose this sort of work because they enjoy making something original, but they have to earn a living, which is why Amata spends its time holding markets to which it hopes to attract people who are really interested in this sort of work. The Craft Market will be set up in the Avda. Federico Soto and is open on Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 November, from 11 to 2 and from 5 to 9. Many (but not all) stalls will stay open from 11 to 9, as will the big department stores in this rather up-market part of Alicante which also stay open on the Sunday. You can find out more by phoning 639 979 678 (English spoken) or having a look on the Amata web page www.amata.es which has an English section.

AAC for AECC

Costa Blanca’s own Bono tribute performer Robert Bonovox formed Artists Against Cancer about 6 months ago having been inspired by Maria Wilson and her group of Pink Ladies. Artists Against Cancer is a group of big hearted performers on the Costa Blanca and their aim is to raise as much money as they can to help fight the evil disease that is cancer but at the same time to ensure that people enjoy themselves whilst they are raising these funds through various musical extravaganzas around the region. The latest such event was held at El Mundos in Benijofar on Sunday 27th October. The big hearted performers who donated their time this time included female vocalists Rhionne and Wendy

Dawn Cartledge male performers Barrington Entertainer, BJ Bluesman, Lyndon B, Spanish Duo Bella Luna and of course Rob himself. The event was another fabulous success for AAC as they raised 1138 euros on the day through a raffle, auction and donations all of which was handed to Maria and the Pink Ladies on behalf of the AECC. Maria said I feel really humbled that so many fabulous local performers constantly donate their time free of charge to our fight against cancer, I would like to thank them one and all especially Rob who has been touched by this evil disease himself and continues to support me and my Pink Ladies.

they bring a lived-in, homely feel to a house. They can be very easy to care for, and here are a few tips to keep them healthy: Get the light right. All plants need light, but not all plants need the same amount or type of light! Identify how much natural light is needed for your chosen plants, and place them accordingly. Water as needed. All plants need water, even cacti, so find out how much or little water they will need when you buy them. A rough rule of thumb is to water sparingly, wait a few minutes, and when you can see water appearing at the bottom of the pot, that’s enough. The reason for waiting? It takes a little time for the water to seep evenly through the soil, so when it arrives at the bottom, you know that the soil is evenly watered all

the way through. If you keep on pouring water in at the top, it will saturate the top, then arrive at the bottom in a flood! Never put plants in pots that don’t have at least one hole in the bottom! And always have a saucer underneath – even if the pot never overflows, and you are mega-houseproud, you will end up with a ring on the windowsill, or wherever the plant is standing. Larger plants in large pots need watering less often than plants in very small pots, which will dry out very quickly. Cacti and succulents need less watering than thin-leaved or flowering plants (although when cacti produce flowers they need a bit more water than otherwise). Plan first, buy second. Decide, (with knowledgeable help) what you want from the plant in terms of effect; what kind of light, space temperature and care you can give it, the go to a good garden centre and buy a healthy thriving specimen. Watch out for plant pests. Some plants are less susceptible to pests than others. SKIN CARE

It has been a long and glorious summer, but winter, (or as much of a winter as we get here) is on the way. It will get cold and the wind will blow, though not as much or as often as we might have had to put up with in the UK, and our skin will tend to dry out and need a bit of extra pampering. Know When to Apply Moisturiser Long, hot showers strip skin of its moisture and wash away its protective oils. Limiting your showers to no more than ten minutes and keeping the water as cool as you can stand can help limit the loss. Lock in moisture by applying a cream or lotion within three minutes of exiting the bathtub or shower.

Continue to Consum sign and turn right onto Avenida Costa Azul, continue uphill and take right turn onto Calle Toledo. Country Club / Barber is 200mtrs on right - Look for Childrens Play Area.

Pick a Moisturiser with Skin-Repairing Ingredients Moisturisers can stop dryness and even tearing if your skin is thin and sensitive. Check the pot for these active ingredients: Humectants: These include glycerin, sorbitol, urea, or proylene glycol. They attract water by pulling it up from deeper skin layers, and are good choices for people with oily skin. Occlusives: Petroleum jelly, lanolin, and beeswax are good examples. They prevent water from evaporating. Barrier-repair compounds: These include ceramide, monolaurin, and linoleic acid. These ingredients, often used in combination with others like cholesterol, help repair the skin’s barrier to prevent moisture loss and damage. Don’t Equate Price with Quality When one large consumer organisation tested moisturisers, it found that both the expensive and cheaper products were equally effective. Add Eye Cream The thin, delicate skin beneath the eyes produces little of the protective oil that keeps skin soft. Specially formulated gels reduce puffiness and dark circles while they moisturise. Look for a cream with peptimes - amino acids that may stimulate collagen production - if you’re bothered by wrinkling, sagging and dark circles. Try a cream containing caffeine (yes, the same ingredient that is ciffee and tea) for under-eye puffiness - it may shrink blood vessels. Adjust Your Moisturiser for the Season Your skin needs more moisture in winter than in summer, so you will probably need a heavier moisturiser. Moisturise Before Bed For soft, young-looking hands and feet, wait until right before going to bed to slather on moisturising cream, then slip on thin cotton socks and gloves. this way you won’t get your sheets oily or rub off the cream.

Skin Quick Quiz The skin is the body’s largest organ.

The skin is both the largest and heaviest organ. The liver is the second largest organ. People with fair skin have fewer melanocytes (the pigment that gives skin its colour) than people with dark-coloured skin. Everyone has the same number of melanocytes, regardless of colour. Your skin type can change during the course of your lifetime. As we get older our skin changes. It may become more dry, less acne-prone, develop more discolouration, and show other signs of sagging. Ultraviolet B rays are the only UV rays that are harmful to the skin. Recent studies show that ultraviolet A rays can also contribute to skin cancer. So, it is important to use a sunscreen that protects against both types of UV rays. If you have cellulite you must be overweight. Genetic factors, skin thickness and age all play a role in the development of cellulite. People who are slim can develop cellulite just as overweight people. Picking hair from a mole causes it to turn cancerous. Hair can safely be tweezered, waxed, or shaved from moles without increasing the risk of it becoming cancerous. The severity and duration of acne are the same for both men and women. In fact, young teenage men tend to have worse acne than young teenage women. However, acne is more likely to persist into the thirties and even the forties for women. There are some dermal fillers (like collagen) that, once injected, last indefinitely? No filler will last forever. Each one will fade over time. Only fair-skinned people develop melanoma. People of any ethnic background, or any skin tone can develop melanoma. Tattoos are easier to apply than they are to remove. Yes, much easier. In some cases they are impossible to remove without leaving a permanent scar.

lacking here in Spain. These include a Bra fitting service and goods exchange policy if the size is not right or you find you just would prefer another style. Costs are kept down by trading in a market stall environment rather than a shop, with savings passed on to the customers.

How many times a day do you apply lip balm? According to a recent poll, the average woman uses lip balm anywhere from two to 30 times a day. Yeah, you read that right -- 30 times.

At prices less than half that of the UK, all Naturana bras are 12€ or less and M&S Bras start from 3€!

Compared to its trendier cousins, lipstick and lip gloss, balm is often the forgotten friend that fails to receive any time in the spotlight. However, it’s something that you’ll find at the bottom of practically every woman’s purse for good reason: With all the stuff we put on our lips, lip balm is a moisturizing must that preps the pout for a smooth, even application of lip color.

An excellent exchange policy means that you can just bring back the items with tags attached. A measuring and fitting service on site ensure you get the right fit in the first place. OF COURSE market stalls vary widely in terms of quality and service and it’s true to say that they are more commonly associated with ‘cheap and cheerful’ goods rather than high end quality. However, some stalls really are a treasure trove of opportunity. ONE SUCH stall is ‘Shani’s Lingerie’, based in Zoco and Playa Flamenca Markets, trading in the Costa Blanca for eight years, offering high quality branded goods such as Marks & Spencers, Naturana, Evans, Ballet and other high-end brand name products for a fraction of the price you would pay in the UK. Fly Gun

Say bye bye to flies Now if you remember your Sunday School Bible lessons, Moses prayed to God to kill all the flies, but unfortunately that plan didn’t quite come to fruition! If your prayers are also unanswered and are still annoyed by pesky mosquitoes and flies darting around, the Fly Gun is a s i m p l e solution. Assembly of the Fly Gun is simple and will

First, find your target and keep very still. It’s best to aim a little bit above the little chap and from a distance of around 30-60cm away. Then gently squeeze the trigger and the nozzle will come speeding out! If successful you’ll notice that whilst it kills them, it doesn’t leave a mess like a conventional fly squatter. You may need a bit of practise to perfect your technique, but after a while you should have mastered it. As fun as all this sounds, remember the fly gun isn’t a toy. But it is simple and effective way to alleviate one of life’s little irritations! Source: red5.co.uk

The eyes are not just a window to the soul; they may be a surprisingly reliable guide to how healthily you eat. While there is no correlation between refusing to eat your carrots and actual night vision, nutrition and optical health are closely linked, with scientists currently looking at the role played by vitamins and minerals in the prevention of eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. That a link exists has long been understood: the eye condition xerophthalmia, a common cause of blindness in developing countries, is known to be caused by a lack of vitamin A, which is found in sources such as meat and fresh vegetables. In fact, vitamins and minerals are crucial to eye health, as they are constantly required to help ward off damage caused by UV light rays. A healthy blood supply is necessary to supply nutrients and oxygen to the eye. So, conditions such as high cholesterol, which clog arteries elsewhere in the body, are also important in the eye region. Professor Ian Grierson, head of ophthalmology at the University of Liverpool, is one of the pioneers in nutritional research. He says: “It is quite difficult to show real benefit to an individual, that by changing their diet it will benefit their sight – the studies needed would be too big and expensive.” However, Prof Grierson approaches the idea from a different angle: “My interest is in AMD. For a lot of sufferers of this condition, there are no treatments at all, so it occurred to me to look at the risk factors for the disease instead, with a view to prevention. “These risk factors don’t just make you more prone to developing AMD, but to it becoming more severe if you do have it.” He explains: “AMD is on the march as we are all living longer [according to the Macular Disease Society, AMD affects 30 million people worldwide, half a million of them in the UK], and it is undoubtedly lifestyle related. “The main risk factors are gender (females are more susceptible), your age (the older you are, the more likely you are to develop it), whether you smoke or have done, your weight, and your diet.” Problems occur because the macula (the centre of the retina) works so hard to give us colour and fine vision, it also produces by-products called free radicals that damage the cells. Prof Grierson explains: “It is like a factory in there. The antioxidants which we get from food protect our cells from these toxins by neutralising them, but if the diet is deficient in the right ones there is no safety net, and the macula suffers permanent damage. “We really need to increase levels of the right antioxidants in patients and the general population.” So, which are the nutrients that we need to top up our diets with? According to Prof Grierson, while research suggests that vitamins A, C, E and zinc can help keep the eye healthy, it is carotenoids, the pigments that occur naturally in plants and algae, which offer the most precise way of targeting the damage that causes sight loss. In particular, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin seem to act directly to absorb damaging blue and near-ultraviolet light, in order to protect the macula. “I call them the macula’s sunglasses,” says Prof Grierson. “Any plant or vegetable which is yellow or orange in colour contains them.” They are also found in abundance in green vegetables such as kale and spinach. We should be eating 6mg of lutein a day, but the average

consumption is 2mg. “That’s way too low,” says the professor. “In the Second World War, our average intake was 4-5mg and we weren’t even trying.” But you can’t just eat vegetables alone: the lutein needs fat to be absorbed, so you are allowed a little butter on your garden peas. In fact, a 2005 study at the Ohio State University, Columbus, found that carotenoids absorption was enhanced by the consumption of avocado oil and fruit. So, should you take one of the many supplements on the market to help maintain healthy eyes? Prof Grierson says: “I’d prefer that you thought about diet and then take a supplement rather than jump straight to the tablet. But when I go to the US on lecture tours, I know I won’t eat as healthily as at home, so I take a supplement with me to make sure. Even if you have a good diet, there will be times when you can’t eat perfectly or won’t have control over your diet.” And, if you choose a supplement, “Use your common sense,” he advises. “Creating a vitamin supplement is an expensive business, so don’t look for or expect a bargain. Find one that gives you 6mg of lutein a day.” Other nutrients have been found to be potentially beneficial, such as the red pigment lycopene (found in fresh tomatoes, tomato sauces and water melons), which has shown promise in studies on the prevention of prostate cancer. Omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids are also good for maintaining eye health, says ophthalmologist David Allamby of Focus Laser Eye Clinic in London (www.focusclinics.com). “Tear film has a layer of oil which helps keep water on the surface of the eye. If you are deficient in omega-3s, you may suffer dry, uncomfortable eyes.” Essential fatty acids can be found in flax seed Nutritionist Ian Marber adds: “Night vision may be improved with vitamin A found in fresh fruits and vegetables as they contain a variety of carotenoids, but supplements may not be necessary. There is some evidence that suggests that vitamin A supplementation can increase the risk of some forms of cancer, and so getting it from food is advisable.” If you do want to get more vegetables into your diet, greengrocer and author Gregg Wallace, co-presenter of BBC1’s Masterchef, suggests you always buy as fresh as possible, and try to keep nutrients and taste intact. “Remember this is or was a living thing; don’t stick it in the fridge, keep it in the sunshine.” When you’re cooking, “Don’t over-peel veg,” he advises. “In root vegetables, such as carrots, the nutrients are just under the skin, so just give them a gentle scrape.” Potatoes should be cooked in their skins to preserve nutrients, “otherwise all the vitamins just leach into the cooking water which you throw away. Peel them afterwards using a tea towel to hold them.” He points out that frozen veg is not disastrous, either, as it is often frozen so fast after picking. But he says that we should try to eat seasonally (bar fruit and veg which won’t grow here, such as bananas) if possible. “At the moment I’m eating lots of pears (I love the honeyed juice) and brassicas, such as cabbage and kale. I can feel them doing me good.” Prof Grierson, who has written a cookbook, Vegetables for Vision: Nature’s Supplements for Eye Health (£14.50, www.waterstones. com), suggests we aim for a “brightly coloured plate, a ‘traffic lights’ of vegetables” to be sure of getting enough nutrients, and not to worry if they are a bit old, as carotenoids last longer than vitamins. He is, however, not suggesting that eating up your greens, yellows and reds is the ultimate panacea for blindness. “I cannot guarantee that this will work for everyone. Some patients will address every risk factor and still get AMD; others defy the logic and never get it. But in a group of 100, 30 will benefit a lot, 40 will benefit a bit, and 30 won’t benefit at all – so the majority will get some value from eating like this. “The beauty is that it doesn’t require radical change – have a juice with breakfast and some berries on your cereals, add salad to a sandwich at lunchtime, and eat two types of vegetable at dinner.” Gregg Wallace agrees: “You can’t change your diet overnight; just up the portion size gradually.” And to help you maintain healthy eyes, Prof Grierson says: “Take a one-a-day supplement with a broad base of antioxidants. Happily, your overall health should be maintained, too.” Don’t forget your eye test Everyone should take an eye test at least every two years, says London-based ophthalmologist David Allamby, and not just to watch for changes in their prescription. “We need to check for glaucoma, an eye disease in which the optic nerve suffers damage, caused by increased pressure of the fluid in the eye. it is often called a ‘silent’ disease, as it can cause permanent damage to your sight before you realise anything is wrong. “With other blinding conditions, such as macular disease (when the cells in the retina degenerate causing loss of vision) or cataracts (clouding of the lens), you will probably notice a difference yourself, but the sooner you come in, the better. “With cataracts, we can operate to remove them; and even with macular degeneration, we may be able to prevent spread (in some cases), and give you advice on how to cope. “if you are concerned about changes to your vision, we can advise on surgery or lenses. short sight tends to develop in the teens or 20s; and long sight in middle age — 40s-60s — when you’ll need reading glasses. “New laser techniques, such as Z-Lasik, can help even that group, and offer ‘blended’ vision, which may leave you seeing better than ever before.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health

FOR BUSINESS

Why start a business in spain? Many people moving to Spain need to make a living. Work can be tricky to find and isn’t well paid compared to Western Europe or America, so one solution might be to start your own business. As with anywhere, the trick is to either offer something that no one else already is, or do it much better than the competition. And there is plenty of competition, with Spain still being the number one destination for Brits to buy abroad, but this does offer more scope in the way of targeting expats. In fact, unless you are fluent in Spanish or can employ Spanish speakers, then you are pretty much limited to the expat market alone – but even so you will need to learn some Spanish to cope with basics.

When you start your own business in Spain you open up the potential for high earnings - there is no ceiling and no restrictions, but of course this doesn’t mean it’s without its potential downsides. You should remember, like when starting a business anywhere, you don’t have a guaranteed income, so you should allow time and make sure you have enough savings to live on for at least six months. When you start your business from scratch, you’ll have to build up a customer base. This will involve outlaying money upfront on advertising, setting up premises etc before you start generating any income, so make sure you’ve budgeted for this properly before you start. Ensuring you do your sums carefully before you start can be the key to long-term success. If your business can survive this difficult initial period you should start to reap the benefits of having your

CONSULATE WARNS BRITISH NATIONALS TO REGISTER ON PADRÓN IN ORDER TO AVOID SERIOUS SOCIAL DIFFICULTIES IN YEARS AHEAD The British Consulate in Malaga has held a workshop for social workers, charities and community associations in order to learn more about British Nationals who are experiencing extreme social difficulties in relation to healthcare, housing and residential care. British Vice-Consul Rosslyn Crotty explains, “We are seeing an increase in British citizens who are in desperate need of assistance following an illness or cash problems. “This is a growing concern. We want people to think about the future, speak to their families and take steps to plan for the years ahead before it’s too late.” Difficulties facing British Nationals include those who have received hospital treatment and are ready to be discharged but have no one to look after them, people who desperately need residential care but are ineligible as they failed to register on the Padrón, and others who failed to register for their social security cards and thus lack entitlement to healthcare. There are also residents who find themselves homeless and have either lost their passports or allowed them to expire, and thus cannot get help from many support charities. The Consulate and charity groups are warning British citizens who are resident in Spain that they must register on the Padrón at their local town halls in order to qualify for help from social services in the future. When you decide to live abroad you are also choosing to rely on the services of the country you live in. If you fail to register your name, you are putting yourself at huge risk of being unable to get future help when you most need it.

The Padrón

What is the Padrón (empadronamiento) and do I have to register?

Although you may read or have been told that you do not need to register on the padrón, the British Embassy advises that it is obligatory by Spanish law to register on the padrón at the Town Hall where you reside. By registering, you will actually be benefiting your community because your local government receives funding depending on how many are registered on the Padrón. The Padrón is a good way for the Town Hall to know how many people are living in their area. You may also be asked to complete census forms which allow you to vote in your local elections. On the Padrón should be the names of all persons living at the property. You can still be on the Padrón for a certain address even though your name is not on the escritura (title deeds) or rental agreement. If you wish to apply for your certificado, register your child for school, register at your local medico (doctor), transfer an imported vehicle to Spanish plates or buy a Spanish car then you will likely need a padrón. How do I obtain my Padrón? You need to go to your local Town Hall. You should take with you your passport, a utility bill, a copy of your escritura (if you have one, though it is possible to get a pardon without it) and your NIE number (Numero de identidad de Extranjero). Some Town Halls now charge a small fee for processing your Padrón. It will not matter if your NIE number shows a different address however your escritura/rental agreement should be your correct address.

Anette Skou of the Foreigners Department in Mijas says, “In most cases where social services are powerless to help it is because the British nationals involved have not registered on the Padrón. We urge all British residents in Spain to REGISTER ON THE PADRÓN – YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE”.

You will receive a certificate showing your property details as well as the names of all who reside there. Usually this is a fairly quick process and you will be given your certificate to take away with you.

The workshop was attended by the Royal British Legion, Red Cross, Age Concern, Age Care, Caritas, The Soroptomists, Lux Mundi and La Cala Diabetics Association, as well as social workers from across Malaga province, all of whom come into contact with British residents on a daily basis.

You may be asked for an up to date padrónie dated within the last three months, by certain services or authorities eg the medical centre, Trafico, Social Services. If you are then it is simply a case of asking your Town Hall to reprint your padrón.

Charity groups also stressed the huge importance in Spanish culture of providing family support to people in difficulty. There are laws in Spain designed to avoid family members being abandoned to the state. But in the UK, society’s expectations of the social support provided by public hospitals and services are higher. British expatriates often fail to understand the much greater level of support that family and friends are expected to provide in Spain, charity groups say.

Must I renew my Padrón?

Some local authorities are currently checking the accuracy of their padrón registers so you may be sent a letter enquiring as to whether you wish to remain on the padrón. If you do not answer to this, you may find yourself being removed from the padrón. Taken from niein1day.com For help in obtaining your NIE number quickly contact us at niein1day.com. People of all ages should consider their retirement plans every year but as you get older, you should be more aggressive. When do you want to retire? Are you considering early retirement, late retirement or are you planning on retiring at a fairly typical age? How long do you plan to live off your savings? Keep in mind that the longer you will live off your savings and investments, the more you will need. Another thing to consider is your lifestyle. What will your lifestyle be? Do you want to live a similar lifestyle as you do now, continue to work in some way, concentrate on a particular hobby or travel? There are a few details that are often overlooked when planning for retirement. First is the possibility of declining health resulting in increased medical expenses. DO you have sufficient insurance to cover any medical expenses? Will you have sufficient cash on hand to pay deductibles? As your health declines and premiums get more expensive, will you be able to afford to pay them? Another consideration often overlooked is inflation. Remember that what you can buy for a

dollar today will not hold true a few years from now based on inflation. When you are planning for retirement it is imperative that you build in more cash to account for inflation. These are some of the important issues to consider before retirement.

Budget, Budget, Budget As you get closer to retirement it is advisable to seek the advice of a financial planner who specializes in retirement. Even if you have planned and saved all your life you may be too close to the issue and another set of eyes to evaluate your retirement plan is a good idea. What is important is that you understand your goals, any risks you may be subject to and how much you will need to accomplish your financial goals for retirement. You need to understand how much income you will have every month to spend. This is not the entire amount of your retirement investment but the amount of money you will receive every month to

Putting the Plan into Action Once you have a plan going forward you need to buckle down and put it into action. Look at all the investments you have and make sure they are working for you toward your goals. If you have an employer matching 401K at the very least you should be contributing the maximum amount possible to get as many matching funds as possible. The closer you get to retirement; you may want to consider increasing your contribution to the maximum amount. Investments should be looked at closely and the typical rule is that the closer you get to retirement, the more conservative you should be. The aggressive, risky funds you invested in when younger should be moved to more conservative ones. Listen to your financial advisor and be diligent about putting away the funds recommended as things to consider before retirement.

before retirement. Look at your debts and pay down as much as you can now. Reduce your debt as much as possible with a special concentration on loans and lines of credit with significant interest rates. If you have children you help out, push them toward financial independence and discuss with them the need to stop relying as heavily on the parents before retirement. The fewer expenses you have the better off you will be. Finally, you should make sure to take care of yourself. There is no sense planning for retirement without being able to enjoy it because you are in poor health. Additionally, insuring you are in good health will reduce possible future medical expenses that will sorely tax your retirement reserves. While working, take advantage of wellness benefits,

Lost Nazi art: Unknown Chagall among paintings in Munich flat Art experts in Germany have identified a previously-unknown painting by Marc Chagall as being among the 1,400 works found in the flat of an elderly recluse

behind cans of food in a squalid apartment. Munich customs officials employed a specialist removals firm that spent three days painstakingly transporting the multimillion pound art collection out of Mr Gurlitt’s corner flat.

A treasure trove of art including previously unknown works by Marc Chagall and Otto Dix has come to light in a stash hidden for decades in a German flat. Paintings dating as far back as the 16th century were found alongside 19th century art when officials searched the home of Cornelius Gurlitt in Schwabing, Munich, on 28th February 2012 Dr Meike Hoffmann, an art expert from Berlin’s Free University who has been charged with cataloguing the find, said the haul of some 1,400 paintings and drawings were occasionally dirty but otherwise in good condition. They include a previously known self-portrait of Otto Dix dating back to around 1919 and an untitled

Senior public prosecutor Reinhard Nemetz said Mr Gurlitt’s current location was unknown to the authorities.

allegorical scene by Marc Chagall, she told a press conference in Augsburg, Bavaria. Dr Hoffmann said the previously unknown Chagall painting dating back to the mid-1920s was of “especially high art history value”. It was one of the 1,401 pictures - including 121 framed and 1,285 unframed discovered at the apartment. Amongst them were oil paintings, drawings, lithographs and water colours. Works by Pablo Picasso and Albrecht Duerer also came to light.

Neighbours at Mr Gurlitt’s apartment building have reportedly not seen the white-haired 80-year-old - who has an Austrian passport - since the summer. Siegfried Kloeble, director of Munich Customs, said he did not believe that Mr Gurlitt had any further artwork hidden away elsewhere. “We don’t think it is likely that there are more pictures stored somewhere,” he said at the press conference.

A painting by the latter artist dating back to the 16th century was amongst the astonishing find, not all of which was art stolen by the Nazis. Works by Renoir, Henri Toulouse Lautrec, Henri Matisse and Max Liebermann are also amongst the works discovered in the raid on Cornelius Gurlitt’s apartment. The pensioner first came under the suspicion of customs officials on 22nd September 2010 when he was seen traveling to from Munich to Zurich and back, with large amounts of cash, in a single day. When they conducted further inquiries they discovered that he barely existed on official records: he paid no tax, held no social security records, and had never worked. They then searched his flat and found the piles of paintings hidden

Munich Customs have come under fire for keeping the extraordinary art find under wraps for so long. But Mr Kloeble said the sale of a Max Beckmann painting called Lion Tamer, Circus by Mr Gurlitt occurred before the raid on his apartment took place. The Munich authorities have ruled out publishing the massive art collection in full on the internet. Berlin art lawyer Prof Peter Raue criticised the decision not to put all the works of art on public display. “Why won’t the pictures be published? It is a scandal,” he told German television news channel N24 www.telegraph.co.uk

In the GREAT HOUSES, into the cake was baked a dried Bean and a Pea. one in one half and the other in the other half. The cake was decorated with sugar, like our icing, but not so dense, and ornamentation. As the visitors arrived, they were given a piece of the cake, ladies from the left, gentlemen from the right side. Whoever got the bean became King of the Revels for the night, and eveyone had to do as he said. The lady was his Queen for the evening. In smaller homes, the cake was a simple fruitcake, with a bean in it, which was given to guests during the twelve days of Christmas. Whoever got the bean was supposed to be a kind of guardian angel for that family for the year, so it was an important task, and usually, it was arranged that a senior member of the family would get the bean! This was observed until recently in Poland in fact. In Britain the cake was baked as part of the refreshments

Prep Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 4 hours, 30 minutes Total Time: 5 hours, 30 minutes

Ingredients: 1lb 2oz/525g currants 8oz/ 225g golden raisins/sultanas* 8oz / 225g raisins 4oz / 110g mixed candied peel, finely chopped 6oz / 165 glace cherries, halved 10oz/ 300g all purpose or plain flour Pinch salt ½ level tsp mixed spice ** ½ level tsp ground cinnamon ½ level tsp freshly ground nutmeg 2½ sticks / 300g butter, slightly softened 10 oz / 300g soft brown sugar Zest of ½ lemon 6 large eggs, lightly beaten 3 tbsp brandy, plus extra for feeding

offered to the priest and his entpourage who would visit on the feast of the Epiphany, January 6th, to bless each house in the parish. this custom died out after the Reformation in the late 16th century.. In Mallorca, the main island of the Spanish Balearics Islands, they have a similar custom which takes place at Easter. The festive cake in Britain was revived at the end of the 17th century, and became very much part of the Twelfth night partying again. It is recorded In royal households, that the cakes became extravagantly large, and the guests divided into two side could have a battle with models on the cake! One battle was a sea battle, and there were minature water canon on the cake which really worked!

TWELFTH NIGHT This is the Church festival of Ephiphany. The traditional day when Christians celebrate the arrival of the Magi or Three Kings at Bethlehem. It used to be the time when people exchanged their Christmas gifts. The feast was marked, as were all the old feasts, by some kind of religious observance. A visit to the church, a service or some kind, and then a folk observance which was tightly wrapped up as part of the Church activities. As we have seen, Twelve Day (the day following Twelfth Night) entailed the blessing of the home, and in some countries is still observed. But after the Reformation, these customs of the Church were banned by the Puritans, and fell into disuse. Without its religious overtones, Twelfth Night became

Preparation: Heat the oven to 300°F/150°C/ Gas 2 The temperature is low as the cake needs a long slow bake. It is packed with sugars, fruits and brandy and if the temperature is any higher the outside of the cake will burn and the inside be undercooked. Line a 9 inch cake tin with 2 thicknesses of parchment or greaseproof paper. Tie a double band of brown or newspaper paper around the outside. This acts as an insulator and to prevent the cake from burning on the outside read more about why here. In a large roomy baking bowl mix the currants, sultanas, raisins, peel and cherries with the flour, salt and

spices. In another large bowl cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the lemon zest. Add the beaten egg to the butter mixture a little bit at a time, beating well after each addition - do not try to rush this process as the mixture could curdle. If it does curdle simply add a tbsp of flour and mix again, this should bring the mixture back together. If it doesn’t come back together, don’t fret, the cake will still be delicious. Carefully fold in half the flour and fruit into the egg and butter mixture, once incorporated repeat with the remaining flour and fruit. Finally add the brandy. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared cake tin making sure there are no air pockets. Once filled

a time of mischief and over indulgence. By 1870, Britains Queen Victoria announced that she felt it was inappropriate to hold such an unchristian festival, and Twelfth Night was banned as a feastday.

THE ARRIVAL OF THE CHRISTMAS CAKE The confectioners who made the cakes were left with boxes full of figurines and models for Twelfth Cakes, and also had lost revenue by the banning of the feast. So they began to bake a fruitcake and decorate it with snowy scenes, or even flower gardens and Italian romantic ruins. These they sold not for the 5th January, but for December Christmas parties. And it was thus that we developed the Christmas cake.

BOILED PLUM CAKE FOR THE COLONIES People in Britain began to make the boiled fruitcake to send to their families who had gone to the new world colonies - in Australia, Canada, etc. and to send to those who worked on the missions. The boiled cakes lasted bestter than the baked ones, and in those days of the 19th century, they could take many weeks or months even to cross the world by ship. These cakes were usually sent as part of a Christmas Hamper of food and presents, and this way the tradition of Christmas cake, often eaten with a piece of cheese or apple pie, became known all over the world.

smooth the surface with the back of s spoon and make a slight dip in the center (this will rise back up again during cooking and create a smooth surface for icing the cake). Finally, using a piece of paper towel clean up any smears of cake batter on the greaseproof wrapping, if left on they will burn, and though it won’t affect the cake, it doesn’t smell too good. Stand the tin on a double layer of newspaper in the lower part of the oven, if you have a gas oven ensure the paper is well away from the any flame, and bake for 4½ hours. If the cake is browning too rapidly, cover the tin with a double layer of greaseproof or parchment paper after 2½ hours. During the cooking time avoid opening the oven door too often as this may cause the

cake to collapse. After 4½ hours check the cake is cooked. The cake should be nicely risen and a deep brown all over. Insert a skewer or fine knife into the centre of the cake. If there is sticky dough on the skewer when you pull it out it needs cooking longer, if it is clean, the cake’s done and remove from the oven. Leave the cake to cool in the tin on a wire rack for an hour, then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely. Once cooled prick the surface of the cake with a fine metal skewer and slowly pour over 2 - 3 tbsp brandy. This feeding should be repeated every two weeks up until Christmas. The cake should be stored wrapped in greaseproof or parchment paper in an airtight tin.

‘Strictly Line Up for 2013’ wee k 6 By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’

‘Strictly’ Week 6 Halloween By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ (for class info see community news) With some extraordinary costumes and makeup in this weeks show the dancing proved to be much better than last week with the strong girls back on form again. I do have to say however, that I wish the professionals would spend a bit more time teaching the basic principals of each dance instead of all the ‘flash’ This year there is very little improvement on what I consider to be the most important elements ie posture, feet and ankles, from one week to the next which is a great pity. Opening this weeks show were Patrick Robinson and Anya with a Quickstep. Although Patrick showed great energy, musicial characterisation and timing his technique left a lot to be desired with poor posture and body contact and those ugly flat feet which don’t appear to be getting any attention! I awarded him 6 and the judges a very generous 34 (trying to keep him out of the bottom 2?). Next up were Fiona Fullerton and Anton with a Charleston. Although this was her best dance to date it was very ‘safe’ and

‘careful’ lacking punch even though she did have a good Charleston swivel. I gave her 7 with the judges 28. Next to dance were Ben Cohen and Kristina with a Paso Doble. Even though Ben attacked this dance well and it was theatrical, lack of technical training through his feet and legs to give the required strength and attitude left him looking weak on the Paso Doble walks. The judges awarded him 32 and I gave him 7. Following with their Jive were Sophie Ellis Bextor and Brendan. Sophie danced this on top of the floor because she was in a position too upright with her weight too far back in places leaving it lacking speed especially on the kicks and flicks. I gave her a 7 with the judges 28. My favourite Natalie Gumede and Artem then performed a Viennese Waltz. I am pleased to say she was back on form and danced this like a true professional again. Her elegance, line extension and musical interpretation are perfect. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of the dance in ballroom hold but the choreography she was given she performed beautifully. I gave her 10 and the judges 38 and their first 10s of this series. Mark Benton and Ivetta then danced a Paso Doble. I think Mark is attempting to be the joker of the pack. He came down on

a harness dressed in what appeared to be a silver ‘telly tubbies’ outfit. There was little if no Paso Doble content in this performance and he is rapidly sinking down to Dave Myers footsteps! I gave him 4 and the judges 25. Next to dance were Rachel Riley and Pasha with an American Smooth. Unfortunately this performance was marred by very poor posture from Rachel. She had her bottom stuck out making her neck poke forward, which left her looking extremely heavy on all her lifts.

An altogether disappointing performance. I gave her 6 with the judges 30. Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola then performed a Tango. The opening section was great and he had a great staccatto action and I thought it was going to be a much improved performance, but unfortunately that was where it ended. Again posture was the problem, because Ashley doesn’t lift his core his head was stuck forward and he reminded me of Uncle Gomez from the Addams Family! Despite this I still gave him an 8 and the judges 33. Abbey Clancy and Aljaz then dance their Rumba. She showed super body flexibility on her lines and great story telling but again lack of basic knowledge left her with insufficient floor pressure and hip action. I gave her an 8 and the judges awarded a total of 34. Dave Myers

and Karen then danced?? a Jive. At least we did have a few Jive steps this week but Dave just doesn’t improve, it was still flat footed and plonky. Dave is most definitely a lost cause and I awarded him a 3 with the judges 19. Closing this weeks show were Suzanna Reid and Kevin with their Charleston. Suzanna is always facially superb and she had great swivels but this week her Charleston was a bit soft, it needed more attack and her kicks needed finishing with pointed toes. She was given 34 from the judges and 8 from me. My bottom 2 were Mark and Dave but the actual bottom 2 were Abbey (how!!) and Rachel with Abbey unanimously saved by the judges meaning Rachel left this weeks show on her best week to date. What a pity this happens every year, we have the lame dogs still persisting week after week!! Let’s hope that the Great British public come to their senses and vote out the non dancers in this group to enable the ‘real’ competition to begin. With only 10 left nobody is safe so let’s see who puts in the most hours training for next weeks show. Until then come and join us at one of our weekly classes, in the meantime Keep Dancing!!!

length. A dog’s toenail is made up of the nail itself and the quick the pink (when it’s visible) part of your dog’s toenails that provides the blood supply to the nail. Avoid cutting into the quick because it bleeds quite a bit and it’s quite sensitive. If you decide to go for it, here are some tips: Hold the foot steady, but hold it gently. Snip off a small bit of the end of each toenail. Using either the guillotine or scissors-type clippers, place a tiny bit of the nail in the nail clipper and snip.If the nail feels spongy while you’re trying to cut it, stop immediately — you’re cutting the quick! Stop any bleeding immediately. If you cut the quick (often called quicking), you’ll have an unhappy dog and a bloody mess. The quick bleeds a great deal, so if you cut it, you need either a nail cauterizer — a tool that stops the bleeding by applying heat — or styptic powder, which you can apply with a cotton swab. Have a damp washcloth at hand ready to clean up styptic powder and blood as necessary. Quicking hurts a lot, and most dogs remember the experience long afterward. Don’t forget the dewclaws

they don’t normally touch the ground and if you fail to cut them, they will eventually grow back into your dog’s foot, which is quite painful. If you use a nail grinder rather than clippers, use the same method — hold your dog’s foot, turn on the grinder, and grind a little off each nail. As many dogs detest having their feet handled, so clipping may never be your favourite shared activity, but getting your dog used to this ritual at an early stage helps you both weather the process. Give your dog a yummy treat after the trimming session, along with a big hug, a boisterous “Good dog!” and a healthy scratch behind the ears, to build up the idea that toenail trimming is not so bad, after all! If you can’t do all your dog’s nails at once, never fear — you can clip them one paw at a time, with other activities or a resting period in between. Last, very important, tip: It’s better to take two teeny cuts than one big one! From How to Trim Your Dog’s Toenails By Margaret H. Bonham from Dog Grooming For Dummies

A real rib-sticker, this stew. Slow down and extend the cooking time (adding liquid if necessary) if you like it really tender.

ngredients: For the pork 2 tsp vegetable oil 600g/1lb 5½oz pork shoulder, cut into serving pieces 150g/5½oz chorizo, cut into serving pieces 1 medium onion, sliced 1 bird’s-eye chilli, seeds removed, flesh chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 75ml/2¾fl oz white wine 400g/14oz tinned tomatoes, chopped 200g/7oz canned butter beans, rinsed and drained 2-3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 tbsp clear honey

Preparation method: Heat the oil in a large pan over a medium heat, add the pork pieces and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until browned on the outside but not completely cooked through, then remove from the pan and set aside to rest on a warm plate. Add the chorizo to the pan the pork was fried in and fry for 3-4 minutes, or until crisp and golden-brown. Remove from the pan and set aside with the pork. Add the onion and chilli to the same pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, or until softened. Add the garlic and the wine and bring the mixture to a simmer. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until the volume of liquid has reduced by a quarter. Add the chopped tomatoes and the butter beans, then return the cooked pork and chorizo to the pan and stir well. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over a low heat, cover the pan with a lid and cook for at least 45 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and reduced in volume. Add a few tablespoons of water to the simmering mixture now and again, as necessary, when the sauce becomes too dry. Just before serving, sprinkle over the parsley and stir in the honey and season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper, as necessary. To serve, spoon some of the pork stew into the centre of each of six serving plates. Place a portion of garlic bread alongside each serving.

viewpoint

For some time now I have been treading the streets with a haughty demeanour. I pace with studied carefulness, my head high, eyes front, and look down my nose at the huddled masses. This is not because of any delusions of grandeur on my part; it is because I’ve got a stiff neck and an iffy back. The combination of both conditions at once means that I have to move with a deportment that makes me look as if I thought I were the better bred younger sister of the Duquesa de Alba. The incomparable Praxedes mended me once, and for a brief spell I skipped like an extremely mature lamb in the Springtime, but in short order the pain returned; my purse does not allow for multiple mendings, so I settled for Being Careful. I needed to find what was causing of all my anguish, and the culprit seemed likely to be the laptop. It sits on its specially purchased, specifically designed desk, a glory of sweeping curves in tasteful MDF Mountain Ash and Crimson. However, due to the sweepiness of the curves, the laptop has to sit well back on the desk. This means that due to the ‘natural ageing of my near vision’ I have to crane forward in my chair to

read anything smaller than headline sized print, resulting in a crick in my neck and a pain in my back. So the distance between laptop and eyes needed to be reduced. I thought long and hard, and the only sensible option seemed to be: Get a different desk. However, I wasn’t anxious to scour the country, possibly as far as Murcia, for another desk and chair, so Pete and I held a top-level conference with a tape measure, during which it was decided that the printer – sitting high and proud on the sweeping curve - was in the way. But the tape measure proved the printer innocent; the root of all evil was in fact the curve. If the curve were not there, the printer could shove along a bit, and the laptop could come forward sufficiently for me to be able to see what I was looking at. I went out, leaving Pete looking thoughtful. I returned to find Andy’s jigsaw on the kitchen table, Pete reading a book, the printer nestling happily on the end of a truncated curve, and the laptop in pride of place, within easy range of my ‘naturally aging near vision’. During my absence he had performed curve reduction surgery on the desk. Ah bliss! I am now sitting comfortably; and I can also see!

Count Your Blessings and Drink the Rum

The thing about bemoaning missed opportunities is that had we taken them at the time, the good things that we have experienced in life since - the places we have travelled to and the people we have befriended - might also have disappeared. Following on from the same theme that I explored some weeks ago, I had reason to reflect on this again recently, when my wife reminded me that back in the 90’s, when buy-to-rent was all the thing and mortgages were easy to acquire, we made the decision not to dip our toes in the waters of multiple property ownership. It has always given us cause for regret in view of subsequent events and I have to hold up my hands here and admit that it was me - not wanting to spoil our mortgage free status - who had harboured misgivings. And not for the first time, we wondered just what our situation would be now had we become professional landlords. They say that one small alteration in the evolution of

species, should we have the means to travel back in time, or the minutest adjustment of a particular historical event, could have a devastating effect on the present day. Our Royal Family could now be of the House of Jagger, or man may not have become the dominant species, with humans being ruled by the dinosaurs.

Come to think of it . . .

Anyway with that in mind, I don’t doubt that our circumstances would be greatly transformed had we taken a different decision back then. Whether for the better or worse though, is anybody’s guess. Sometimes, with the power of hindsight, we can see just what would have occurred with a fair degree of accuracy. For instance, we were desperate to sell our Suffolk cottage back in 2003, in order to enjoy the tapas lifestyle earlier rather than later. I had been offered an interview with probably the foremost property agency in Spain, so all we had to do was find a buyer. But after three rock solid certainties from interested parties had fallen through, we took the house off the market and decided to wait for things to improve. Had we sold, our plan would have been to follow all of the good advice and invest in rental property in Spain to boost our pensions. Well, we all know now just how good that ‘good advice’ was, and I thank the Lord every day that we were unable to sell the Suffolk property until much later. Moreover, the property company that was my potential employer – like many others – no longer operates in Spain. On the other side of the coin; way back in the mists of time, when I was a young Jack-the-lad in Bermuda, the opportunity arose to purchase a parcel of land in the relatively

unknown Caribbean Islands of the Turks and Caicos. Ten acres in all - it was poor scrub land, but with ocean frontage and on the market for twelve thousand dollars. The ‘good advice’ then, was to invest in the islands in anticipation of a property boom in the near future, and Bermudians, having had an association with the Turks and Caicos for many years, supposedly had insider knowledge. It was however, purely speculative and involved a good degree of risk. The cash was no problem, with the banks falling over themselves to lend money, and my Bermudian friend and I thought long and hard about taking the plunge. But being worldly ignorant and concerned only with which party to attend on Saturday night, coupled with the reasoning that: if it’s such a good investment, then why is the land so cheap – we decided against it and ordered another round of Cockspur and ginger.

Huge mistake.

I mean, hyper massive. Not the rum – our judgement! Several years later, the generous British government decided to pay for the Islands own international airport with a runway long enough to take jet liners. Result: mass tourism and an open door for all sorts of property and business opportunities. I calculated at one point – based on what I had read about the acquisition of a parcel of land in the islands by a hotel chain - that our ten acres would probably have fetched

Rodriquez considered his grooming of Pedro el Estevado complete with Pedro’s terrible body odour central to the plot. After convincing Pedro of his powers of persuasion, it was in fact Pedro’s B.O. that made people agree and hurry away, Rodriquez sent him among the good folk of the Pueblo, petition in hand. The petition had six paragraphs. The first five putting forward the argument for the repair of the church clock. The sixth simply stated that the Alquerian Constitution should be torn up and Rodriquez made perpetual dictator of the village republic. The mechanism for this ploy was simplicity itself. The worthy people of Alqueria would only be able to stand at most four paragraphs of Pedro’s body odour and would sign simply to avoid the onset of nausea. The fifth paragraph was a buffer for the more resilient but the sixth would be a paragraph too far and never be read. The signatures were however valid for the whole petition. It worked like an evil smelling charm and all signed, Loco Paco scrawled the name Gary Cooper, having recently watched ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’ and was away with the fairies again. It isn’t that Rodriquez wanted strong action to revive Alqueria’s fortunes after the débâcle of the Remitbrick and Remitbright projects. He wanted total control of the Republic of Alqueria. He wanted to line his own pockets, to be totally corrupt he needed total power. He believes himself to be clever, astute and very very wise, he is in fact a total idiot. This is also a common failing

among politicians as well as small town plutocrats. Pedro, full of self importance presented the petition to a jubilant Rodriquez. Every adult in the Village signed. All, according to the petition wanted Rodriquez as supremo and coincidentally the church clock to work. All that was needed now was present the document to the Alquerian Government. The Establishment must yield to the apparent suffrage of the people. Those present in the Town Hall when Rodriquez presented his petition reacted by hurling anything handy at the would-be dictator. Manuela, the champion of democracy and local femme fatale pointed out that crucial to Rodriquez’s demand was the tearing up of the Constitution. This document was written on the back of a cigarette packet during the celebrations following the Declaration of Independence. During the Remitroot fuelled binge that followed Loco Paco had used the precious document as a taper to light the Paschal Candle, his befuddled mind believing the celebrations were for the Semana Santa. Rodriquez foiled again, this time by Loco Paco stormed out of the Hall muttering dark threats and promising vengeance.

upwards of eight million dollars. In fact there was a major spread in one of the English national dailies at the time, about some of the T&C islanders who hitherto had scratched a living from the land or sea, being catapulted into millionaire status overnight. Yes, what if? But really, what does it matter. We wake up every day to the sun streaming through the windows. The sparkling Mediterranean is close by; we live comfortably and have our health.

And I still have my rum.

Don’t you love going on holiday? I do, I think it’s great, apart from two things; packing and travelling. The sooner they invent self-packing cases the better! As for travelling, well I’m very much in favour of the Star Trek approach to travel-just step into a booth and get yourself beamed to your destination, piece by piece, arriving almost instantly-unless of course they’d run out of dilithium crystals again. Okay, yes I know that there are some drawbacks to the whole beaming up thing-some spoilsports will say it’s dangerous and that after your bits reassemble themselves you could end up with a fragment of another person. Well I’d take a chance; you never know, if I’m lucky, I could get David Beckham’s bank account! One of the Graham is married fascinating things to Helen and has a about travel is daughter, Alice. He coming across other lives part of the year cultures and trying near Albox, but works to fathom out what in Qatar, teaching. If on earth is going on. you wish to contact Fortunately we’ve got Graham regarding books like the Rough this article email: Guides or the Lonely helenandg@yahoo. co.uk Planet series, as well

as the Travel Channel to help us. Some countries don’t seem to have them though. China for instance seems to rely on advice from their Government to help them with their trips overseas, and this is another one of those cases where reality really is stranger than anything you could write. The National Tourist Administration-great name-has published a 64 page guide to help Chinese nationals when they are travelling. Yes, 64 pages! Most people would be home before they finish it. I won’t go through the whole guide, but there were one or two eyebrow raisers in there. Amongst the things that Chinese tourists are advised not do is that they shouldn’t, no matter how tempting it may be, take their life jacket from the plane away with them, as someone else may need it. Yes, you read that properly. There’s a money maker there; can’t you just see a chain of fashionable lifejacket shops for the discerning buyer? Me neither, but Ryanair might. The other somewhat surprising piece of advice was that when using public toilets in a foreign country, Chinese men and women shouldn’t leave footprints on the toilet seat! Let’s just hit pause there. Footprints! I know we’re all different but the mind boggles-what are people doing that leaves footprints on the toilet seat? On reflection, I don’t think I’ll delve too deeply into that mystery; some things are better left unknown, don’t you think?

Out and About

As newlyweds last autumn we tried to explore Jerez de la Frontera; non-stop rain however meant that we only managed the Tio Pepe Bodega and a couple of tapas bars before soggily driving away. So a return visit was on the cards and a couple of weekends ago we drove back under a glorious blue sky. Jerez de la Frontera is known to us Brits for three things; Sherry, its Grand Prix circuit and ‘spit’ Ryanair flights into the airport. I originally worked in the hospitality industry so for purely professional interest it was the alcohol side of things that interested me. We visited the oldest bodega in Jerez, Pedro Domecq founded in the 1700s. It’s a much more laid back and personal tour than Tio Pepe with no sense of urgency, wonderful aromas from evaporating spirits in the huge wine cellars bring a heady delight to the senses. 70,000 American oak barrels

are stored 3 high in the solera system throughout the beautiful sprawling property and there are artefacts everywhere giving visitors an insight into how the various type of sherries and brandies have been produced over the centuries. At one point our guide told us how a special type of black paint is used on the barrels to ensure the humidity inside is kept constant. Then turning a corner, we spied Mr Barrel Painting man knelt on the floor in the gloom with a torch strapped to his head doing his job. Rather like the painting of the Forth Road Bridge I thought as it’s a never ending job. For strictly educational purposes we had tickets for the ‘deluxe’ tasting tour and we sat at a table tasting brandies and 30 year old Sherries only just as the yard arm came round. A clever marketing ploy meant that shop visits are done afterwards and again there was no rush or hard sell. Now for my Christmas tipple I have a 30 year old Pedro Ximenez sherry to look forward to. Mrs Amore was content with her drinks mats, branded glasses, souvenir posters, mouse mat and even a cuddly toy. As in The Generation Game - didn’t we (or they) do well! Afterwards as we sat at a nearby hostelry, nursing cool glasses of

fino our erstwhile tour buddies walked past giving us a funny look. Jerez has a wonderful old quarter which is easy to navigate, its mostly pedestrianised and fairly level too. Having previously visited The Alhambra in Granada, and other Alcaza’s (palaces) in Almeria, Malaga and Seville I have to admit Jerez takes my biscuit castle wise. Simple gardens surround a beautiful mix of twelfth Century Moorish and later Christian architecture including the only surviving Mosque in Jerez, steam baths, and the olive mill with its huge workings. I’ve loved the 1946 film A Matter of Life and Death since childhood; seeing it dozens of times. In it Doctor Reeves has a Camera Obscura in his attic; now one is installed in a tower at the Alcaza. For a couple of Euros it can be seen in action, though it’s a small room with places limited to 8 at a time. A rotating mirror on the roof projects what it sees down onto a concave screen some 2 metres across. The detail is astounding and with blue skies on the day we visited, it was a fabulous and beautiful 360 degree tour of the city. Fittingly it was a Moslem scholar called Alhazen who first put theory into practice building the first one a thousand years ago in Cairo. Viva Jerez!

I seem to getting into the habit of selecting a subject that has an argumentative aspect to it. Today, I might actually have a reason for it! Let’s take a step back. This week, I’ve have several people come to me with a problem that initially looked like another malware attack. Here’s the surprise! The frightening message that was being flashed onto their screen was simply a note that the computer wanted cleaning up (what it actually said was “You have xxxx’s of errors, viruses or malware!” There was a tiny “fixit” button to the side.) We all, by now, have a routine of System Clean; Virus and Malware Scan; De-fragmentation and Data backup once a month (at least those who read, understand and follow the advice in these articles). This is the number one choice to prevent you from needing to come to me to correct the problems arising from neglect. We have, over a lot of articles, discussed which is the best Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware, System Cleaner and De-Fragmentation program for you, trying, at the same time, to offer an unbiased opinion as to the merits of each. So you have the, usually free, tools to work with. This incident started a seed question which was “Why would anyone want to pay good money for software that can be found for free or at a vastly reduced cost AFTER they have tried it and found it to be what they actually want / need?”. The first realisation relates to what can be called “Hype over Substance”. A simple example of this is when a politician uses clever

wording to make his affair with the secretary seem like a benefit to national security – WHAT TOSH! The “Rule of Thumb” (read up on the Roman empire) that I use is “How slick is the advertising without actually telling you anything useful”. I have seen TV ads and websites that do everything except make you coffee but don’t tell what you are getting for your money. Polished, shiny advertising that triggers the greed mechanism in your brain, “I gotta have that”, without giving the skinny on what it actually is useful for. The second realisation was actually simple and we see it every day. It is the “keeping up with the Jones’s” mentality. They have the latest version of a program on the newest computer, so why shouldn’t we have the same. Because, we don’t need it! If what you have works, and works well, why in the name of the four winds, change? My laptop (that runs Linux, Windows XP and XBMC) is 10 years old and won’t give in. So why change it?

There you go! Nothing really controversial there. Remember! Date for your diary - 14Th November and 5th December – La Vida (Cucador) – Fayre (Great gifts, Psychic Advice, Buns and Cakes and ME) You’re on a loser if you aren’t there. See you at Jack’s (Friday afternoon’s or at La Vida above.

MOTORING

Concept Cars Headed for the Dealership At the end of auto-show season there’s a typical letdown. Lots of fancy sheet metal was shown, but when the cars don’t make it to the dealership, it feels like a hot date called off at the last second. Sometimes, though, show cars aren’t just pretty teases, but harbingers of real, buyable automobiles. Here are the concept cars we expect to come to the showroom (though in an altered form), with our best guess on timing, specs and, when possible, price. Automotive marketers never like to comment on facts and figures before a car is on sale, but there are always telltale signs.

37

lovely homage. The car we’ll likely get in the showroom, however, will be the product of a Porsche-engineered platform for the VW Bluesport Coupe and Convertible, the Porsche 550 and the Audi

this country if it’s going to grow. The Bulli would integrate well with VW’s strategy of multiple models on a single platform. The fivepassenger van would use the next-gen Golf as its underpinnings, and possibly would come as either a hybrid diesel or even an electric-only vehicle, like the concept shown in Geneva this past spring. And unlike the present Transporter, which has really ballooned from the compactness of the original Microbus of the 1950s and ‘60s, the Bulli is small and squat. Still, modern-day adventurers and those with a hint of nostalgia will hope VW saves the show-Bulli’s rear seat that folds totally flat for in-car camping. Source: Popularmechanics.com

2013 Jaguar C-X75

Of all the cars at the Paris Motor Show last September, we thought Jaguar’s C-X75 seemed the least likely to see production. Well, we were wrong, but if you want to pick one up it’ll cost you a cool $1.1 million. Formula One maker Williams will help to develop the chassis and supposedly the hybrid system as well. We won’t see the twin gas-powered turbine system that was originally shown in Paris. Rather, there will be a conventional gasoline-powered motor (with specs yet to be determined) mated to a hybrid-drive mechanism. Still, if the C-X75 (it will get a new name, too) features four electric motors (one at each wheel), it will offer all-wheel drive and extremely high torque. Jaguar promises a run to 60 mph in under 3 seconds, a top speed of 200 mph and a range of 31 miles in electric-only mode. 2014 Audi Quattro Concept The 30th anniversary of Audi’s Quattro technology spawned this

R5 (think of it as a not-so-poor-man’s R8). The chassis goal for all three is exceptionally low weight, far lighter than anything presently in this class. Though all three will be sports cars, they’ll achieve impressive fuel economy. Some speculate that the Audi motor will be the 340 hp five-cylinder from the forthcoming TTRS, along with Quattro AWD and DSG transmission, and that the yetmore-serious R5 will be priced above the extremely capable TTRS, and perhaps won’t even be much cheaper than an R8. That gets interesting, because then you’re talking about an Audi competing with the Porsche 911.

It was an even start with both sides having to defend furiously at times. Gradually Daya came more into the game creating a couple of good chances. On 15 minutes a well worked one two move from the home side’s forwards saw Manuel open the scoring. It was all Daya now and a couple of good efforts almost found the back of the net. On 20 minutes the second goal came via Marcos following good interplay between Carlos and Luis. The visitors by now were restricted to just the occasional breakaway. With the home side asserting so much pressure it seemed only a matter of time before a third goal came Daya’s way. On 35 minutes the goal came when Luis chased what seemed a lost cause and put in a great cross for Marcos to score with two bites of the cherry, his first shot being well saved by the Fulgencio keeper. At 3 - 0 down at half time surely there was no way back for the visitors ? The only chance Fulgencio had to get back into the game was to start the second half with a quick goal. In fact it was Daya who were out the traps quickest, Alberto’s cross come shot was met at the far post by Marcos for 4 - 0 Daya, Marcos having scored three them. On 53 minutes following a fantastic run and cross by Luis, Francisco had the easiest of tap-ins for the homeside’s fifth goal.

Just minutes later the same player made it 6 - 0. There followed a bizarre seventh goal just a minute later when after several attempts by the visitors to clear the ball it ricocheted off a number of defenders before finally beating their keeper. With Daya now permanently camped in the visitors’ half you could be forgiven for thinking that it would be a 10 goal scoreline. That it stayed at 7 goals was mainly due to the Fulgencio keeper who produced a number of fine saves. So a great win by Daya that helps ease last week’s unfortunate defeat. Although all the Daya players were on their game today my Man of the Match was Luis. True he did not score but had a hand in five of the goals. His work rate was tremendous and he led the front line superbly. They may well be named Sporting San Fulgencio but the number of yellow cards issued to them does not sit well with that name. The Match Official had a very good game, he was always up with play and used the advantage rule whenever possible. The scoreline enabled coach, Paco to give all the substitutes a run out.

La Finca - 30.10.13 What a good turn out for our game at La Finca, 44 members and guests travelled the short distance to the course to play our usual stableford. These 44 people were the lucky ones as there were several waiting on the reserve list in case of any drop outs. From the restaurant area, with coffee in hand, the course look in really good condition and so it proved to be when play began. As our first tee time was 11.00, the last few players out were concerned about the light fading towards the end of their round, some bright spark suggested taking a torch, as it turned out this was not necessary and we all finished in the sunshine. Our thanks go to Alan for started us off and looking after us so well. Tired but well entertained we travelled back to The Tavern for tapas and a well earned drink. The pick of the bunch were:

Gold Division: 1st Brian Smith 36pts, 2nd Brian Leys 35pts and 3rd Dicky Claeys 34pts

Montesinos continued their great away form with a fantastic display of football beating CD Thader 14. From the kick-off Monte were in the driving seat. Three minutes in, a corner by Angel was blasted over by Rubio, then Diego went close 2 min’s later. On 15 min’s Dimitrys cross was handled in the penalty box and Rodrigo converted the spot kick 0-1. Monte’s constant pressure was causing mayhem for the Thader defence. Marcos and Rodrigo went close before Monte were awarded their 2nd spot kick for a foul on Marcos which Rodrigo calmly scored 0-2. Monte’s travelling fans were relishing this performance and a great creative build up move

saw Ruben send over a cross on 35 min’s which found Dario whose shot rippled the net to make it 0-3 at half time.

Just a note for members, most of our 18 hole games up to Christmas are booked up but please get your names put on the reserve list as there is usually someone unable to play.

Thader started the 2nd half by getting closer to Monte and restricting the space Monte capitalised on in 1st half and started to create chances themselves. Monte changed Ruben for Omar who shortly found Dario in space and his pace took him forward to net Monte’s 4th goal. Thader replied with a goal from a free kick which was scrambled over after 60 min’s. The style of Monte’s play was evident as Juanpe was enjoying his teams excellent passing football. In

Yesterday San Fulgencio, in third place, took on CD Dolores who were fourth. With a free kick being given Berni shot towards goal but was deflected. The first fifteen minutes were all one way with the home team attacking Dolores. Sergio was unlucky to have a foul against

the last 10min’s Brazillian Vaz and Norwegian Kevin ( yes Kevin) making his Monte debut, came on for goal scorers Dario and Rodrigo. Both late subs went close. The Thader goalkeeper’s rocket type clearances gave Monte 7 goal kicks of their own in the match noted by STATISTICS STAN. On 26 minutes Ismael managed to drive a shot past the keeper. 1-0 to ‘The Saints’. That was it for the first half. When they came back Dolores seemed to have a little more fire, creating more chances for our keeper to demonstrate how good he is! There was a mad mêlée around their goal and from the rebound our captain Fernando fired a volley goalwards making it 2-0. Fifteen minutes to go ! Five minutes later Dolores pulled one back but we got the points at the final whistle. Man of the match must go to our keeper, Victor Hernandez with a special mention to Kike for nonstop action. TMGS Match Report for Alenda

Eurogolf, La Marquesa Press Report

62 players took part in today’s competitions which was a 4 Ball Better Ball on Thursday 31 October at our home course of La Marquesa. The weather was a little bit on the chilly side this morning. The temperatures have definitely dropped a tad since the clocks changed. Fortunately there were no ghouls, ghosts, witches or warlocks on the course today, they must all be saving their best bib and tucker for trick or treating tonight. Last week the writer was given some duff information. Auntie Glo’s tip for mosquito bites is to rub soap on them, not butter as stated last week. (Apparently any old soap will do, it does not have to be expensive perfumed ones). 83 diners attended the first dinner dance of the season in our revamped clubhouse on Saturday night. The overall feedback was that it was a great success and we are looking forward to many more evenings of fine dining, music and generally having a good time. Thanks to the staff of the Clubhouse for looking after us so well. The winning teams were as follows: 1st Hedy Paehlig and Tom Corbett 44 points 2nd Keith Wright and Joyce Pohl 43 points 3rd Vince Tocker and Peter Sanderson 42 points 4th Roger Ritchings and Jenny Cheetham 42 points (c/b)

30th October 2013. 27 turned up to the delightful and well-kept course of Alenda where we were treated to, once again, a very affordable green fee with buggy and a very much in form course where the fairways were in very fine shape, as were the greens and the course is a tribute to the green staff. There was the threat of rain, according to some forecasts but “Old Tom” (Tom Jones) was adamant that the day would be dry as his bunions weren’t playing him up. Even though the sun shone, the course in excellent nick, the returned scores didn’t really reflect the conditions and only 2 members actually broke par. That said, Alenda is not an easy course and many holes can grab you by the wotsits and make you jump up and down in pain, just ask Peter Wells who on one hole took 3 shots to get past the ladies tee. The first shot, his tee shot, went all of 2 inches. The second didn’t fare much better and his playing partners were trying their hardest to stifle their laughter and comments. Have you ever tried to eat an egg sarnie while trying not to wet thyself with laughter? Trust me, it ain’t easy and in fact it’s easier to try to understand what Alan Rickers is saying than that. Anyway, Peter was rewarded with a sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels for his NTP on the 16th as were

Steve Higgins (3rd) and Chris Oatley (13th). Also rewarded with a sleeve of Srixon’s for obtaining a “Two” were Steve Higgins and Joe Dean; both on the 16th. The best Visitor of the day was Chris Grey who received a TMGS towel for his efforts and his 37 points. The Silver Division was a fairly close affair with Alan Rickers taking 4th spot with 28 points, Sandra Twentyman 3rd with 29 points and the runner-up spot went to Pearl Sabine with 31 points. This left John Hillier’s 32 points good enough to secure top spot. The Gold Division outfit fared a little better and it needed 30 points for Bill Starkey to claim 4th spot, Chris Oatley’s 32 was enough for 3rd, but way out in front were Steve Higgins on 37 points for the runner-up prize and with an outstanding 40 points from John Eyre took home the bacon and talking of bacon, I am sure there will be some slicing to be done on John’s handicap by the “Butcher”. He does it with a smile too. Just for a change this week, the photo is of the N.T.P. winners Our next game, Wednesday 6th November 2013, see’s us at the Hacienda Del Alamo golf course, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www. tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.

Tuesday 29th.saw many members turning up for what can only be described as a perfect day for playing golf and they were not disappointed, even though the scoring today was surprisingly very low, with only 6 players managing to break into the 30 points barrier. However, it should be reported that while the course is in a much better condition than it has been it is strange to see hollow tinning beginning to take place in the middle of what is know as golf’s high season. Luckily it did not cause us too much trouble as it was the first day of maintenance and most were able to complete the round without any disruption. Our normal Stableford competition to-day finished with the following winners. Category 1. 1st. Peter Greasby 37 points. 2nd. Ron Matthews on c/b from 3rd. Phil Brigham 32 points 4th. Sue Owens 30 points. Category 2. 1st. Chris Rose 32 points 2nd. Bente Kildegaard

FC TORREVIEJA

TORRY WIN AWAY TO END CULLERA’S UNBEATEN HOME RECORD Last Friday Torry travelled north to play Cullera CF, a side which were promoted to Tercera this season and had got off to a good start to the campaign, particularly at home, with 4 wins and a draw. Torry were looking to get the show back on the road on their travels and for a win to consolidate their position in the top 4. Torry were without the injured Eloy, Dani Lucas and Obele and the suspended Valdeolivas. The Torry manager had to shuffle the pack and brought in Manu Amores for his first start of the season at right-back with Vicente switching to left-back and Dani Meseguer taking up a position in central midfield. Micro was preferred to Pastor on the right flank. Torrevieja : Carrión, Vicente, Manu Amores, Alexis, Rafa, Dani Meseguer, Carrasco (Paul 88), Burguillos, Rafa Gomez, Alberto (Gasch 77 ‘), Micro (Pastor 50’). Not Used: Carlos Moreno and Pau.

The home side started the better but did not really trouble the Torry defence until a misunderstanding between Rafa and Carrion presented Cullera with a chance with Rafa having to scurry back to clear a goalbound effort from a Cullera forward entering the net. Torry had a penalty claim for a foul on Carrasco turned down. Carrasco then bundled the ball into the back of the net but was penalised for pushing. Good interplay between Alberto and Dani Meseguer presented Alberto with a clear shooting opportunity and his well struck effort was very well saved by the Cullera keeper. On the half-hour mark Carrion produced an outstanding save to keep an effort out by Da Silva for Cullera. On 35 minutes Cullera had the ball in the Torry net but it was disallowed for offside. The first half came to a close with neither side managing to find an opening goal. In the second half Cullera again had territorial advantage but were not able to breach the Torry defence. A chance fell for Alberto for Torry, after the

keeper had parried a Carrasco effort ,but his shot was blocked by a home defender. Soon after Torry broke away and had a two on one situation but Carrasco failed to control Pastor’s pass and the chance was gone. Torry got the breakthrough after 70 minutes when Alberto found Dani Meseguer with a delightful ball and his stinging volley was not held by the Cullera keeper and Carrasco was first to the loose ball and drilled the ball into the back of the net for a GOALLLLL to Torry. Cullera then upped the ante but could not breach the Torry rearguard. Torry were still dangerous on the counter and Gasch should have made better use of the ball when Torry had another two on one situation but failed to find Pastor who was free for a direct run on goal. Cullera almost snatched an equaliser in the last minute when Carrion produced a magnificent save from a De Silva header from a freekick to deny them. A hard fought victory for Torry which leaves them in 4th place in the league. Yellow cards were picked up by Carrasco,

Gasch and Manu Amores.

VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE

This weekend should be the “game of the season” so far when top of the table and unbeaten Eldense come to town. It should be a titanic struggle as Eldense will strive to continue their unbeaten start to the season and Torry their unbeaten home record during which they have yet to concede a goal. Will something give. You will only know if you get down to the Vicente Garcia on Sunday for the 5.00 pm kick-off. You are urged to be there and witness what should be a “cracking” game. To catch up on up to date information about Torry visit the Torry Army website www. fctorrevieja.net or the clubs website www.futbolclubtorrevieja.net. A happy Darrylldinho, following his adopted team in Spain end Cullera’s unbeaten home record and looking forward with great anticipation to Torry hopefully ending Eldense’s unbeaten start to the season.

ITV ORIHUELA RFC BACK IN ACTION THIS COMING WEEKEND ThIs weekend the first team are back in action again away to Lorca on 9 November kicking off at 17.00, hoping to get back to winning ways after the disappointment at home to Albacete, who have improved a lot since last season.

PREMIER DIVISION – November at ALICANTE GOLF

1st

The Vega Baja Premier Golf League got its second macth of the season at the Seve Ballesteros designed course near San Jaun, Alicante on a warm sunny 28 degrees November day. With the course in good condition it bode well for good scoring. It was another good day for a La Manga team again this time it was the La Manga RGA who took maximum 15 points from Eurotoffs coming out 4 to 0 winners their highest scorer was Florence Von Carlowitz with a very respectable 37 points, rewarded with a handicap cut. The highest scorer of the day was Vicente Ferrer – Don Cayo G S, with a whopping 41 points and an obvious cut but it was not enough to take the points even in their match as the paring from Paddy’s Point amassed a joint 74 points just three more than their opposition.

While the second team will have its second game in the clubs 40 year history on 16 November against San Javier, Squalos, at home. Hoping to keep the winning ways against a far more experienced team again, after beating another experience and young team, UCAM, the other week away. We are looking for plenty of support for the vets, and new players who have just this season started playing and need to give them all the encouragement we can. The second team is there to give us vets a run out as well as to help the juniors coming through and the new players
