Heartbreaking note from inseparable couple who jumped to their deaths because they ‘didn’t want to be a burden’

Glenys and Royston Smith, 88 and 91, were struggling to hold on to their independence because of their failing health, and had told friends they were terrified of being sent to separate care homes.

The couple climbed up to their bedroom windowsill late at night on December 2 last year, put their hats on and, using an upturned washing up basin as a step, fell 30ft to the ground below.

Police investigating the death found a note to their two sons written in marker pen on a whiteboard in their kitchen, saying ‘Sorry boys. This is the best way. Too much pain.’

An inquest into their deaths, which rules that they were suicides, found that the couple died of traumatic injuries caused by the fall.

They were discovered the next morning lying face down beneath their open window, side-by-side.

The frail couple had been faced with a variety of ailments, and were aware of plans to move them into care.

An inquest into the deaths in Bournemouth heard how Mrs Smith suffered from a debilitating, painful back problem as well as osteoporosis.

Mr Smith was taking medicine for prostate cancer, and both he and his wife had poor eyesight.

The great-grandparents, who had been married 67 years, had said just days before that they felt unable to go on, and were afraid of burdening their family.

Cindy Hoyle, the building’s caretaker who found the couple, said Mr Smith had told her days before of his concerns.

She told the inquest: ‘I told him they had a wonderful family and I was sure they didn’t mind,’ she told the court.

‘They were very much in love and didn’t want to be without each other.’

Mrs Hoyle told the inquest she found the couple at 8am on December 3 last year beneath their open window, which was about 30ft above.

She said: ‘I could see they were both lying face down, but I could see it was them and I recognised their clothing.

‘I knew straight away that they were dead. I could see the bedroom window was wide open and I realised at this point that Glenys and Royston had fallen from that window. They were very much in love and didn’t want to be without each other.’

Sheriff Payne, the Bournemouth coroner, recorded a verdict of suicide.

He said:’I conclude that they jointly decided to take their own lives, they decided that suicide was the only future for the two of them.’

However, his performance was not without drama: The 19-year-old fell twice in the free skating final but prevailed thanks to a world record triple-digit score of 101.45 in Thursday’s short programme, and errors from his rivals.

UKIP’s Nigel Farage hints that the British flood crisis was caused by the EU

However, the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, has hit back saying that EU regulations did not contribute to Britain’s flooding crisis.

He was responding to accusations from Nigel Farage that constraints emanating from Brussels have added to the problems of UK flooding.

Barroso described the Ukip leader as a “doomsayer,” while calling his attack a “caricature” of the role of the EU. Farage has demanded a public inquiry into claims that EU regulations made it more difficult for the dredging of

British rivers to take place, while decrying the ability of an Environment Agency that is “hamstrung by a whole series of European directives, putting the interests of beetles and voles and birdlife before that of farmers and people.”

However, speaking at the London School of Economics, Barroso refuted the charge, adding that it was “surprising to see the persistence of some of the doomsayers within Europe,” particularly after the EU’s response to the eurozone crisis.

Sir Tom Finney the former England winger dies, aged 91

Sir Tom Finney, the former Preston North End and England winger who is widely regarded as one of the finest players this country has ever produced, has died aged 91.

Finney, the oldest living England International, was one of the iconic footballers of the immediate post-Second World War years, a hugely popular figure who symbolised a golden era.

Blessed with fantastic natural ability and fitness, Finney earned the nickname the “Preston Plumber” as a result of his second profession.

In an era dominated by amateur values in sport, Finney, who was born in the shadow of the club’s Deepdale Stadium, used to earn £14 a month at Preston – around £100 in today’s money – and was forced to look for other work to top up his income.

His status was such that Preston, the club where he spent his entire career, were rather unfairly dubbed the “Preston Plumber and his 10 drips” He made his senior debut in 1946 and appeared 433 times for the club over 14 years, scoring 187 goals. He was capped 70 times by England, scoring 30 goals.

Preston named a stand after him, made him club president, and placed a statue in his honour, and last week held a minute’s silence before their League One game against Leyton Orient.

A statement on the club’s website said: “Preston North End have been informed of the extremely sad news of the passing

of Sir Tom Finney.

“Sir Tom was the greatest player to ever play for Preston North End and one of the all-time greats for England.

“The thoughts of everyone at the club, and those connected with it, are with his family at this time.”

Although widely regarded as one of the superstars of his generation, Finney’s career was also notable for the fact he failed to land any of the game’s major prizes. He was the key player in a Preston side that just missed out on the league title in 1953, before losing to West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup final the following year.

Preston were also runners up in the First Division in 1958, ensuring the club’s most famous son ended his career without a winner’s medal.

Prior to his successful playing career, Finney had served in the army in the Second World War. Many observers who saw him play are adamant he deserves to be ranked among the world’s best.

He was the first footballer to be named Player of the Year twice, winning the award in 1954 and 1957.

The former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once paid tribute to him, saying: “Tom Finney would have been great in any team, in any match and in any age ... even if he had been wearing an overcoat.”

It was not isolated praise. Sir Stanley Matthews, the only player who rivalled

Finney in the 1950s, said: “To dictate the pace and course of a game, a player has to be blessed with awesome qualities. Those who have accomplished it on a regular basis can be counted on the fingers of one hand - Pelé, Best, Di Stefano, and Tom Finney.”

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan, who played against Finney as a young defender at Blackburn Rovers, said: “As the opening match to every season Blackburn used to play Preston in a practice game. He recounts “I was put back in for this match at Deepdale and who should I be playing against but Tom Finney.

“My first match back after two and a half years and I’ve got probably the finest right-winger there has ever been. And Tom Finney is the perfect gentleman. He never took me on at all. I took the ball off him three times in the first half and when we were coming off I went to him and said: ‘Tom, you’re not taking me on.’

He said: ‘You’ve had some bad luck, son, and I’m not going to take you on, I want you to get through today’s game and get back into the first team.’ I’ll never forget him saying that to me. He was and still is a total gentleman.”

JOIN OUR CLUB Plans are underway to form an English language cinema club at the Cines IMF in Torrevieja. Local U3A have expressed an interest in the idea, with some 50 members putting their names on the list.

The likelihood is that a Thursday evening would be set aside for showing such films. MGM Musicals to James Bond, through to Bogart and Cary Grant, and everything in between, could be fluttering through the gate (Do they still have “Gates” in modern projectors?).

A BLOT ON THE LANDSCAPE IN PILAR DE LA HORADADA

A number of “Bulletins” ago, I drew attention to the edifice that began it’s construction, skywards, under the stewardship at the time, of Mayor Ignacio Ramos, and the former Socialist (PSOE) Council. In 2001, an estimated build budget of 2.4 million euro, was accepted, and work started.

A number (!!) of problems were experienced during the construction, with an additional 8 or 12 million being talked about, to complete the job. Oh dear!

The build was stopped in 2006. The “White Dove” as the locals named it, remained half built from that year on. Interior fittings have, over the years, been stolen, along with the elevator system that was to service the underground car park. Recent checks have found that the weight of the building has exceeded the tolerance that would have enabled the underground parking to have been safely used.

Paul Rodwell, British Consul to Alicante tells me that his team encourage British nationals to keep in touch with their Town Hall, and that the new Facebook page is a way to share relevant content from

town halls and other organisations more widely. Paul suggests that by visiting the Brits Living in Spain site, or Facebook page, experiences of like minded British nationals can be seen, and indeed, commented upon.

“Brits living in Spain” is run and moderated by the British Consular network. It is a sister channel to the British Embassy’s UKinSpain Facebook channel, which focuses on institutional and political information.

Jose’ Fidel Ros, has now authorised 60,000 euro from the town’s coffers, to enable work to start to remove, at the time of my jottings, the top four floors.

ANY ROOM FOR S-62 “TONINA” IN CARTAGENA? Visitors to the promenade at Cartagena recently, can’t have failed to notice that submarine “Isaac Peral” in no longer on display. To many ex-submariners stepping down the gangplank from many a cruise ship, docking within the safe harbour, it was something to have one’s photograph taken alongside, and to discuss with fellow travellers, over dinner that evening. With the Isaac Peral now being refurbished in the Naval Museum, the Izquierda Unida

Verdes (IU-V) in the Ayuntamiento de Cartagena, have been offered a old S-62 “Tonina” class submarine, in it’s place. Snag is, where to put it!

Cartagena is the only working base for submarines in the Spanish Navy, so it would seem highly sensible to find a suitable location. Perhaps the plinth and fountain area where the Isaac Peral was located, could be extended to receive this fine submarine, which retired from active service around 2005.

What to Do Before Your Dog’s Bath Make sure you give your dog a long walk prior to his bath to drain his energy and reduce his stress. Your dog is much more likely to surrender to a bath if he’s too tired to put up a fight.

Make sure you collect everything you’ll need for the bath in advance: shampoo, conditioner, and towels should be within your reach from the tub. Put a nonstick bath mat in the tub to keep your dog’s feet from slipping out from under him. Have the water temperature set to lukewarm for your dog’s comfort.

Starting Your Dog’s Bathing Process The most critical part of the bathing process is about to begin, and it’s primarily contingent on your state of mind, and how you bring your dog into the activity. First and foremost, expect success. Forget about your past frustrating experiences with the process. This time, you’re going to make it happen. Period. See the bathing process as a form of affection, and just one more opportunity to bond with your dog.

Without saying a word, go and get your dog.

Don’t call him to you. Don’t plead with him or practice “baby-talk.” Simply put a slip leash on your dog in a no-nonsense manner, and lead him to the bathtub. Start wetting him down with

a gentle stream of water first. Once he’s used to the pressure, you can increase the intensity of the water. Begin at his neck and shoulders and work your way down his body, leaving his face for last. Make sure to rinse him thoroughly so no irritating shampoo is left behind.

If your dog becomes agitated or fearful at any time during this process, your job is to remain calm and in control. Don’t comfort him or it will only nurture his fear. Remaining cool and undeterred will show your dog that there’s nothing to fear.

What to Do After Your Dog’s Bath Once the bath is over, towel-dry your dog off well and/or dry him gently using a blow dryer.

He will shake himself off, so be prepared. Don’t let him outdoors right away as some dogs are notorious for trying to re-scent themselves by rolling in the dirt. The last thing you need is a wet and muddy dog after all your hard work!

Don’t make a big fuss about the bath before, during, or after it. Think of the bath as “no big deal” and chances are, eventually, your dog will feel the same way. Here’s to having a more civilized experience during your next bathing session with your dog!

WOODY BIDS TO WIN TIGER TROPHY...

The Pets In Spain charity Valentine’s dinner dance was a complete sellout.

Charity shop manager Eve Waring arranged this event to help raise much needed funds for the animal charity.

P o p u l a r Costa Blanca entertainer W o o d y entertained and soon had everyone up on the dance floor rocking and rolling.

Towards the end of the evening an auction was held for the adoption of a rescued cuddly fluffy tiger.

Woody decided that nobody else was worthy of this pet companion and with the highest bid he signed the tiger’s adoption papers. The total amount raised for the charity at the dinner dance was 733 Euros.

Forget Me Not,the new community iniative,held an open day at the Cultural Centre,Camposol on February 17th to enable people to see at first hand what is now available in this area for sufferers of long term illnesses.

Forget Me Not offers carers some respite from the constant 24/7 attention they have to give to their dependents.Forget Me not takes on the role of the carer to enable the carer some much needed time for themselves which is absolutely necessary for their health and wellbeing.

Forget Me Not is staffed by nurses and qualified personnel and provides one to one care of the dependent during their time with Forget Me Not. It is planned that lunches will be available if required at a small charge.

Forget Me Not opens its doors officially on the 3rd March,initially from 12 noon till 2pm for people suffering from long term illness such as dementia and alzheimers and will

welcome you all.

As you will appreciate this iniative will be a costly operation and it is planned that a charge will be made.

We are pleased to advise that we have received a wonderful donation from the Ex Servicemans Association for 5oo Euros which will enable this iniative to get a great start.Thank you to the Ex Servicemen.

We have a new President of F.A.S.T. namely Jose Navarro, Mayor of Camposol!

On the morning of Wednesday 5th February a Committee Meeting took place with Committee Members; Gerry Bradshaw, Dave Marks, Helen MacMillan, Val Taylor, Angela Jones and Paddy Snell attending. Gerry Bradshaw recently resigned from his role as President in order to devote more time to Training, in his role of Head Trainer of F.A.S.T. still wishing to remain on the Committee.

An advertisement for a new President for F.A.S.T. was placed in the media. Jose Navarro, Mayor of Camposol, showed his interest regarding the vacancy and having always given support in many various ways in the past, was invited to a meeting with the Committee Members.

This provided Jose with the opportunity to fully establish everything needing to know with regard to the running of the F.A.S.T. Organisation. Following an open and friendly discussion between all, we were highly delighted to hear that Jose wished to join F.A.S.T. as President! The Camposol Community are grateful to Jose for the support and work he has given to Camposol in the past and F.A.S.T are very pleased

and proud to continue working together.

This donation to Rojales is the fourth donation by the Lions to those most in need in towns and villages in the area . In recent weeks the Lions have also donated 500.00 euros worth of food to Vecinos San Miguel Archangel, Alimentos Solidarios Torrevieja, and Reach Out Torrevieja. In addition The Lions purchased a chest freezer for Reach Out in Torrevieja which has greatly helped Reach Out in their drop in centre in Torrevieja.

On 22nd February the Lions are promoting a performance of West Side Story by the Footlights Youth Theatre Group in Teatro Municipal Torrevieja with all profits going to Reach Out. Lion President Janette is pleased to announce that tickets for the show sold out over three weeks in advance of the performance.

Lions helping the needy Lion President Janette Bennett of Torrevieja Costa Lions Club was delighted to make a presentation to Antonio Perez Garcia, Mayor of Rojales at Ayuntamiento Rojales on Friday 7th February on behalf of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club.

The Lions pledged to donate 500.00 euros to help feed the homeless and most needy in Rojales. Following a meeting with Julio Dominguez at the town hall, it was decided that the most needed item required was milk, so the Lions agreed to purchase 500.00 euros worth of milk. Thanks go to the management at Mercadona in Rojales who kindly delivered the milk directly to the town hall. In total the Lions donated 828 litres of milk, divided equally to provide full cream milk and semi skimmed milk.

Due to the entertainers performing for free the management at Zenia Boulevard donate 500 pots of Iris´ for the Pink Ladies to hand out to the public for a small donation to the AECC, this with other donations on the day raised a total of €2117.66 on the day all donated to the AECC.

On Tuesday 4th February 2014 the Zenia Boulevard invited Maria and her Pink Ladies to arrange a full day event to mark World Cancer Day at the Boulevard on behalf of the AECC just as they did last year.

The day started with the public along with Maria and her group forming a human bow in the main plaza in front of the stage and then holding a minutes silence to honour all those who have lost the fight to this heinous disease, the moment was very emotional for many who took part. Following the silence there was a full days live entertainment to mark this annual event.

During the day a gentleman approached Maria Wilson and handed a check to the value of €2032 to be donated to the AECC in memory of Margaret Ruttledge who recently lost her battle with Leukaemia, the money was raised from a raffle, auction and golf match between Paddy´s Point and Gogharty´s both of La Zenia.

The day marked yet another very successful fund raising vent for Maria and her group of Pink Ladies and Panthers, Marie said I am absolutely overwhelmed with the publics response to today’s event and more importantly 88 people both men and women came forward today to book an early screening test with the AECC, this particularly satisfying as apart from raising funds for the AECC one of our main objectives is to get as many people as possible tested because early detection saves lives.

1st Anniversary Celebrations For The Samaritans On Saturday 1st March the Samaritans Drop-in Centre and shop celebrates its first anniversary. To mark the occasion the team are having a morning of events; a fashion show of items from our vast stocks; a tombola stall; a craft stall; an exhibition of crafts; a cake stall; and to round it up a Barbershop Harmony group will be performing. And Sunshine FM will be there to help the party go with a swing.

So come along to the Punta Marina Commercial Centre and make it a day out – the morning celebrating with the Samaritans; lunch upstairs at one of the wide selection of good restaurants and then end the day with your weekly shop.

LOWER LEG, ANKLE & FOOT PAIN We walk to moon and back in a life time …… so why do we abuse the most important structure of our bodies that support us and enable us to get from A to B? You may not even have thought about it, but the eleven muscles of the lower leg are actually foot muscles. Anatomists call them the extrinsic foot muscles, meaning they operate from outside the foot. The muscles in the foot itself are intrinsic foot muscles, meaning they work from inside the foot. The implication of these facts is the pain in your feet may not be coming from your feet themselves.

You can waste a lot of time rubbing and soaking your feet, if the cause of your pain is the trigger points in your calves and shins.

1P ull everything out of your wardrobe and divide into categories such as tops, dresses, trousers and skirts. If you have lots of things that look similar, streamline – do you really need seven pairs of black trousers?

2G ive everything a close inspection. Does it have stains, tears, missing buttons, pilling, hanging hems? If so, is it worth the time and money repairing it?

3K now your body shape. Hang on to clothes that accentuate positives and hide flaws. Keep only your current dress size in your wardrobe and give away what doesn’t fit anymore.

4 I f you haven’t worn something for well over 12 months, ditch it – even if it was pricey. Sell it, donate it, or give it to a friend who will make good use of it.

Trigger points in lower leg muscles also produce most ankle pain. Pain in the front of the ankle almost always comes from the shin muscles. Pain around the Achilles tendon in the back of the ankle is usually from the calf muscle. A “sprained” ankle is often nothing more serious than referred pain from trigger points in the peroneus muscles of the outer side of the lower leg. Many problems of the ankles and feet that get labelled “tendonitis” or a “strained ligament” can be fixed with simple massage of the muscles of the lower leg.

Obviously, serious conditions resulting from physical trauma or congenital deformity do affect the ankles and feet of many people. Nevertheless Myofascial trigger points are always part of the picture even when other conditions exist.

ALWAYS CHECK OUT YOUR FOOT GAIT WITH YOUR THERAPIST TO FIND OUT IF YOUR BIOMECHANICS OF YOUR FEET ARE BEING SUPPORTED BY YOUR ARCHES. The worst thing to do for your foot gate is walk around in flat flip flops this summer that do not support your arches. When your arches are not supported they will fall and being flat footed will cause all sorts of problems.

It’s a Knock on effect from your Feet to your Ankles from your Ankles to your Knees to Hips … eventually causing you back pain.

5D on’t hold on to things because you think they’ll come back into fashion.

Even if trends do make a comeback, nothing comes back the same way.

6W hen debating about whether or not to keep an item, ask yourself: which is worth more, the object or the wasted space the unflattering item takes up in your wardrobe? If it’s the latter, you know what to do!

7 I f you have clothes that have hardly been worn, why not sell them on eBay? If they still have the tags on, you may get a higher price, as people will pay more money for unused items.

This week it was suggested by someone, who also makes a living in the computer industry, that I was one of these “born again” computer ‘specialist’ with little experience and no skills. So my thoughts and therefore the warning is this. This person may have been the very thing that he was accusing me of. Please beware that there are as many “cowboy” computer specialists as there are dodgy builders (and I’ve been tricked by some of them too). Be very careful and use someone recommended until they let you down then come to me. Better still – come to me first :-) So much for my week let me tell you about the pro’s and cons of... Ninite!

Where are you going? Although this is a children’s term for goodnight that has been used in English parlance since the 18th century, in this case it is a natty little program. What is Ninite? As with every single program there will always be pro’s and con’s. So shall we start the pro’s?

It is a stub program, a base for other programs to temporarily connect with. Now for the positives: It is positively TINY (between 256 and 512Kb); It contains a list of the programs that you want to have on your machine; It prevents the

download of all candyware, toolbars and unwanted rubbish that usually comes with so many of these programs; You never have to worry about updates – just run the program again and it will find the latest version; It is smart enough to pick the 64 bit version if you have a 64 machine running a 64 version of windows; You’re constantly updated in the process by a single screen of basic information and finally, If there is no update for a program it will be skipped and you will be given a message saying so; The not so good side of the program (Con’s) are: It uses the default locations for the program, this is only a problem if you have a program that has a version number as part of the folder name, eg libreoffice 1, Libreoffice 2 and so on. I prefer Libreoffice as the location and want the program to either remove the old version and replace it with the new or just overwrite the old version with the new version – both usually work; works best if you turn off your fire wall and antivirus – WHAT!!!!

Second is the fact I do use this program while setting up a new computer for clients for all the reasons that you have been given because It works!

Global Weirding

January was Britain’s wettest winter month in 250 years of recording. 10 of the world’s hottest years have been since 1998!

Remember the movie ‘The day after Tomorrow’? Well this January 6/7th a Polar Vortex caused temperatures to drop in the US to as low as 41C breaking the previous record from 4 years earlier of -37C. Australia announced that 2013 was its hottest ever year. Adelaide was declared the hottest city in the world on 16th January as it reached 46 degrees, 500 miles north in a place called Moomba it reached 49.3C. Big business spends vast sums each year ‘sponsoring’ a minority of usually right wing elected representatives and also scientists to try and convince us that Global Warming is either not happening or not caused by fossil fuels. In Britain Lord Lawson the ex Tory Chancellor is the biggest culprit. A few years ago emails were ‘leaked’ from East Anglia University and dubbed ‘Climategate.’ Somewhat coincidentally just days before, Lawson and others launched their charity ‘Global Warming Policy Foundation’ or GWPF. GWPF immediately clamoured for a public enquiry into the theft of the emails and their contents. Despite tax payers money funding three enquiries no wrong doing was found. The Met Office said “there isn’t any evidence that

There are a number of things I really don’t understand at all and one of them is why so many people willingly make their own beer or wine from kits. I have to admit that in the past we have been guilty of making our own cider, although I would qualify that by saying that we were living in Kuwait at the time where the merest mention of the word alcohol in the wrong place could get you sacked, thrown in jail, deported then brought back to the country immediately so that they could do it all over again! And the cider wasn’t that good either!

But voluntarily brewing your own drinks at home, when there are perfectly good pubs and bars to go to selling drinks that are far more palatable, and cheaper, than anything we make from kits, doesn’t really make sense to me. On top of that, have you ever heard a wine expert telling us that the Boots 2013 is as good as a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc-or any other such wine with an unspellable foreign name?

No unless I’m very much mistaken there is no rhyme or reason to it. Having said that, I don’t know about you but, I am, I have to admit, very much more mistaken more often than I am right! I think the last time I was not very much mistaken about something was in 1978 when, on a whimsical hunch, I predicted that Ipswich Town would win the FA Cup. Well, perhaps not totally correct because I didn’t put a penny on the hunch, so failed miserably to win a small-ish fortune.

Back to rhymes and, or, reasons, there is often, in things going on around us, very little evidence of either. It’s a shame that some of the sceptics have had to take this rather shallow attempt to discredit robust science undertaken by some of the world’s most respected scientists. The bottom line is that temperatures continue to rise and humans are responsible for it.’’

Unconvinced GWPF then paid £3000 to a chap called Andrew Montford another known climate denier to conduct their own enquiry. Montford claimed the British Government were at fault as they had not included any climate sceptics in the three official enquiries. This was inaccurate as Labour MP Graham Stringer is known not to believe the science and sat on the enquiry board and knows Montford personally.

This week with horrific conditions still prevailing across Britain, Lord Lawson decided to only part quote a new Met Office report, the part where it states – ‘As yet, there is no definitive answer on the possible contribution of climate change to the recent storminess.’

This was proof indeed said Lord Lawson that it’s all baloney. He didn’t quote the next paragraph that states ‘There is an increasing body of evidence that extreme daily rainfall rates are

becoming more intense.’

In 2011 GWPF released 900 ‘scientific’ papers that purported to show that man-made global warming was a fallacy. Not only did many of the scientists included complain that their findings were being misrepresented but also a blog called Carbon Brief dug deeper and found that 9 of the 10 main authors of these reports had links to ExxonMobil. Worse still, 131 of the papers came via a right wing journal called Energy and Environment whose co-editor is Benny Peiser, coincidentally a director of GWPF. The ‘journal of choice’ for climate sceptics is how the editor Sonja Christiansen describes her publication.

All this scepticism is aimed at keeping the fossil fuel industries in business. Yet with diversification renewables provide not only clean energy but jobs and profits too. In December10% of Britain’s electricity derived from wind farms. Britain now has the third highest capacity in Europe, behind Germany and Spain. Here in Spain 25% of electricity comes via wind farms and Germany is on course to hit 40% in the next few years.

And then, in a shattering instant, it came: the ferocious eruption of total war. The country woke, stunned to find that the long stalemate had evaporated in a single night, in the smoke and fury of an enemy assault so savage, so overwhelming, that all foolish hopes that catastrophe might yet be averted vanished as though they had never been.

Madeley chose a pre-war setting of the Weald in Kent with events leading up to the second world war with some insight into the pity of war immortalised by Owen. The Arnolds are deeply affected by the war as one would expect. In the second part, the story moves into postwar mode and the setting is the south of France. The excitement and tension of the war reaches an anti-climax and we are left with a touch of the thriller genre, plunging into the sordid world of the Mafia.

The Arnolds were a wealthy and privileged family and contrast sharply with the poverty-stricken James Blackwell who hastily marries into the family hoping to benefit financially from marrying Diana. He is the bete noire of the novel and comes to be known as le Loup, a dangerous man, despised by everyone.

Oliver Arnold was a successful libel lawyer who had fought in the trenches during the first world war as a major.

Four years of fighting and killing was enough to breed cynicism and anger at the imminent approach of war; he would have readily choked the life out of Hitler with his bare hands given the chance. He seems to be the voice of guilt looming over the proceedings of

But it was too late.

John, his son was only 20 and extremely excited about doing his bit for the war effort like many typical young men.

The propaganda machine had easily persuaded the likes of John Arnold to join the RAF to get a crack at Hitler and show him where he gets off! No display of fear or awareness of danger for the younger generation. Not yet, anyway.

Innocence and naivety. Short-lived and soon destroyed.

Gwen Arnold is an artist and daughter Diana, the main character, was reading politics at Girton, Cambridge. She was from a privileged, elitist family and it didn’t seem to matter in which direction her life was heading. She could remain an academic, have lots of affairs or give birth to lots of babies in or out of marriage. Flippant or perhaps a typical product of a middle-class society?

Naïve and innocent like her brother, the thought of an imminent war flooded her

with excitement not dread.

James Blackwell, flight commander, became Diana’s knight in shining armour before transforming into her nemesis in an attempt to destroy her family and security. Her vanity was her undoing.

She wanted John to bring home the best looking pilot in the squadron to spend Christmas with the family. This impossibly glamorous pin-up appeared and swept her off her feet. But, as we know, looks can be extremely deceptive unless you are blinded by Cupid’s arrow like Diana.

And she was soon smitten by his charm and his good looks.

James had lied repeatedly about his past. He was devious and manipulative.

It is possible he had been abused by his headmaster who nicknamed him a barrow-boy. James blackmailed him and threatened exposure unless he wrote an impeccable reference guaranteeing him entry into the RAF. We see his cruelty when he “dumps” his girlfriend of 2 months, Jane Timming after taking advantage of her and boasting to himself that it took precisely 45 seconds to end this affair. The fact that she crumpled to the floor out of shock and horror meant nothing to him.

He took advantage of John’s friendship

to establish himself on the social ladder as a well-placed friend having been snubbed and branded common by the other men. He was also very much of an opportunist and a marriage to Diana would confer a generous settlement from the wealthy Oliver Arnold. Perhaps this would compensate him for his poverty-stricken corral?

The evacuation of Dunkirk seems to be a turning point for both John and James when confronting danger.

I smacked one of them down. I saw my bullets smash through his cockpit canopy. Blood was spraying all over the shop. It was horrible.

It also serves as a wake-up call to Diana’s innocence. James’ narrow squeak left him pretty shaken up when his cockpit exploded in fury all around him. A brush with death is sufficient for him to take advantage of the situation and marry in haste before being shot down by the Germans.

Life is full of surprises, initially nasty shocks for Diana as she faces the future without James. A move to Nice is meant to give her a new start in life but the past comes back to haunt her, destroying the last remains of innocence and naivety.

How will she survive? Will she survive?

You’ll have to read it to find out, won’t you? This is Madeley’s second book, but his first novel. Readable with some dramatic moments and a case of all’s well that ends well.

Google’s UK Sales Growth At Three-Year Low

Search giant Google has seen its UK annual sales rise 16% - the lowest growth rate for three years.

The California-based behemoth said total UK sales topped $5.64bn (£3.4bn), an increase of just under £500m on the previous year.

The UK is Google’s biggest foreign market, contributing 10% of total revenue - excluding the divested Motorola group - and the only one given separate figures in its US reports. Total combined tax for all of Google was down 12%, at $3.82bn (£2.3bn).

The company said the fall in tax paid was due in part to “proportionately more earnings realised in countries that have lower statutory tax rates”. Google has come under fire in recent years over its low UK corporation tax payments, despite multibillion revenues.

The company has been grilled by politicians on at least two occasions, as the public accounts committee (PAC) sought clarification on its tax structures and use of a Dublin base. Its Irish centre is the headquarters for sales across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Google is expected to release its specific 2013 UK tax figure later this year as part of a normal Companies House filing process.

In 2012, its UK arm’s tax liability was £35m, including £24m for previous years, on total annual sales in Britain of £2.95bn.

Last year, PAC chair Margaret Hodge branded Google “devious, calculated and unethical” and accused the company of “deliberately manipulating the reality of their business”.

She added: “You are a company that says you do no evil and I think that you do do evil in that you use smoke and mirrors to avoid paying tax.”

Approached by Sky News, a Google UK spokesperson was unavailable for immediate comment on the latest sales or tax figures.

The US annual report filed late on Wednesday showed growth contraction of 22% in 2011, 20% in 2012 and 16% last year. The growth easing was also reflected in its biggest market, the US, where sales were up 14% to $26.8bn (£16.2bn) compared to 34% in 2012.

The rest of the world grew by 26% in the year to $27.4bn (£16.6bn). Online advertising rates have fallen recently but Google’s pre-eminent position has allowed it to stay out of negative territory.

Display advertising on the internet has struggled as web users become increasingly adept at navigating around ‘click through’ revenue streams.

A report last November suggested that only around one in 1,000 people voluntarily clicked onto display advertisements.

Robinson Crusoe

Campoverde Theatre Group have just completed their performance of their pantomime the Adventures of Robinson Crusoe to great critical acclaim at the Casa de Cultura, San Miguel de Salinas. This production contained everything expected from a traditional British Pantomime, and the audiences fully joined in the spirit of panto booing and hissing when Black Patch came on stage, shouting out warnings when necessary and joining in with the various songs. Robinson Crusoe was a very successful performance enjoyed by cast and audiences alike.

The group will be taking a well earned break of a couple of weeks before they commence readings for their next production which will be their take on that much loved

television classic, Are You Being Served, adapted to a musical and renamed I’m Free. The production will include all the colourful characters from the television series, we will have Mrs Slocombe and Miss Brahms serving the ladies department whilst Mr Humphries, Mr Lucas and Mr Grainger will take care of gentlemen’s clothing, overseen by Captain Peacock and Mr Rumbold.

Additionally we will meet characters from young Mr Graces colourful life.

I’m Free will be a fun filled romp back to the glory days of Grace Brothers Department Store. Add in well loved songs from the 1960’s and this production should have everything to entertain audiences young and old alike.

Let me try to explain the situation as of FRIDAY 7th Feb as best I can.

The new Astra Satellite has now arrived at its position of 28.2-28.5 degrees South and it is replacing the old Satellite that is over 12 years old. The reason for this is twofold it was getting past its its best so to speak as it was starting to run out of capacity, hence the new one would be able to do a lot more things that the old one could not re-capacity enabling the new one to cope with all the new HIGH DEFINITION channels being sent out now on free to air and sky channels. The other job it was set up to try and do was to stop broadcasting BBC ITV CHANNEL 4 and 5 over the rest of Europe including us here on the Costa Blanca. As of 0330am yesterday all BBC channels were lost from the 1 metre dishes in this Area.

I can tell you that on my roof in la-Florida I can get some BBC on a 1.1 with a quality LNB and a HIGH DEFINITION RECEIVER that’s the good news the bad news is it drops out at around 5pm but did return again at 8pm it might be more prudent to go for a 1.4 with HD Receiver in our area.

On Saturday morning at 0700 I again I had some BBC channels.

We can also supply 1.8 or 2.4s plus we do community installations and upgrades. A receiver with a quality tuner can make all the difference to you receiving channels. We have been testing all over the weekend various dishes plus LNB’s and Receivers to see which ones will give us and you optimum signal quality. Going forward although a 1.1 can MAYBE do a job we would strongly recommend installing at least a 1.4 as we know the channels so far are stable on this dish set up.

The Smartie project was started by Spanish Life Properties sl the SMART estate agent and the project was launched at Quesada Country Club at the end of last year. Some months ago Martin, a well known resident of La Siesta, who is also a disabled widower, was seen trying to make his way to the medical centre in La Siesta by means of an electric wheel chair, not meant for road use at all, and should he hit any obstacle or rough patch in the road, would have been catapulted out on to the road.

He was very down in the dumps as without the ability to get out, living alone after his wife had passed away one year ago, he saw no one and had no conversation and was also becoming very anxious that with his disability, which means he cannot walk or stand without support, he felt extremely vulnerable.

It was obvious that Martin, who had always been a cheerful chappy, loved talking to people whilst having a cup of tea or

a glass of beer, was becoming more and more depressed.

Something just had to be done.

So by spreading the word to like minded friends (Janette, Jennie & Paul Mutter, Dorothy Gates, Judy Ferris each donating 50 € and groups such as The Rascals, Barclays Bank Pensioners Club, The Full Monty-Los Montesinos Football Club, all donated 100€ and the Buffalows loaned 100€) an almost new scooter has been purchased for Martin. His lovely neighbour and friend Pauline also donated funds to purchase a cover for the new scooter.

So many people said they were pleased to be helping someone directly, who needed help, and they could feel good to be part of this project in helping Martin to get his life back on track.

Martin himself would never have asked for this help, he could not believe there was so much kindness around, and what wonderful people are living here in Spain.

Success!!

So look out for Martin joining his old friends in Washington Square and down at the Chicken Shack, he is mobile again!! He is smiling again!!

FAREWELL DEXTER The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales has announced that sadly, Dexter has been put to sleep.

Dexter, an Andalucian mule was one of the most popular equines at the centre.

This gentle giant roamed free around the sanctuary and was a major attraction during the Sunday afternoon open days often accompanied by his best friend Valentino the donkey.

Being half horse and half donkey Dexter was at home with all the other 63 equines.

Dexter was rescued in December 2011 after being found wandering on a roundabout in Almoradi by three Spanish brothers. They took Dexter home with them but he collapsed. They contacted the EHCRC for help and Rod and Sue Weeding, co founders of the centre responded.

Dexter had many problems, the largest being pyro-plasmosis (a parasite passed into the blood stream by infected ticks).

During treatment for this illness Dexter actually stopped breathing and was brought back to life thanks to the skill of Dorothea the equine vet.

Sue Weeding, co founder of the EHCRC reflects on Dexter’s last few months at the centre. “During last summer Dexter suffered a mild stroke that we all hoped he had overcome, but sadly this was not the case. He was developing a type of equine senile dementia which progressed rapidly over the last two days of his life.

He became disorientated and unaware of his surroundings and was unable to control his movements.

The heart rending decision to put Dexter to sleep was made after consultation

with Dorothea our vet and Rod and I knew then that nothing more could be done for Dexter.

During the last few hours of his life Dexter chose to be in the enclosure with his best friend Valentino and the nine other donkeys. He suffered no pain or stress and we quietly put this gentle giant to sleep.

Dexter was the most incredible character who enriched our lives and all who came into contact with him. The number of tributes to Dexter on our face book page has been overwhelming and we thank everyone for their support during this difficult period. Dexter will never be forgotten and will remain in our hearts always.”

The Easy Horse Care Centre is open every Sunday afternoon between 1pm and 4pm where you can enjoy hot food, tea and snacks in the garden café. Their popular horse tours start at 2pm where you can meet all of the resident equines and hear their stories.

With only past champions now left in the competition and only 3 weeks left to the final there is no room for errors. This week saw a team challenge girls versus boys giving the winners double score from their solo performances. Nicky Slater is still standing in for Robin Cousins who is still commentating at the Sochi Olympics leaving Karen Barber as head judge in the event of a tie.

Ruffy the sixmonth-old wombat is seen keeping his cool at the Wild About Wildlife Rescue Centre in Victoria, Australia as the area continues to bake under a heatwave.

Record numbers of native animals have been admitted to shelters in recent weeks due to the high temperatures.

Reindeer racing is one of the highlights of the the 400-year-old Jokkmokk Winter Market - the largest festival in northern Europe - which takes place each February on the frozen Lake Talvatis in Sweden.

Opening the show this week were Beth Tweddle and Lucasz skating to You Can’t Stop the Beat from Hairspray. Beth is the most technical skater amongst the girls and this week performed a preparation 1/2 axle never before attempted by any female celebrity.

However despite all her technical prowess, I still find her characterisation cold and lacking in performance skills so I just can’t warm to her skating. I awarded her 8.5 and the judges 34.0. Next onto the ice were Hayley Tamaddon and Dan performing to Skyscraper.

Hayley is the exact opposite of Beth as she always gives such emotive performances but with perhaps not the difficulty of skating skills but I love this partnership. I gave her 9.0 and the judges 34.5. Following were Kyran Bracken and Nina skating to This is the Moment. Unfortunately despite all Kyrans power and speed, I found this performance looked heavy and lacking in presentation.

Despite the attack he gave it, there were moments when it looked out of control. I awarded him 8.0 and the judges 33.0.

Suzanne Shaw and Matt then took to the ice with Black Velvet. Another extremely expressive performance which seemed to suit Suzanne down to the ground playing a sassy character. This showed excellent story telling with clean lifts and transitions and an excellent partnership. I gave her 9.0 and the judges 37.0. Ray Quinn and Maria then skated

to Lego House. Ray makes everything look effortless, you can’t tell who the professional skater is as he finishes everything off perfectly.

Again I awarded him 10.0 and he received his second 40.0 from the judges. Closing this part of the show was Sam Attwater and Vicky to Happy. Sam certainly tried to portray the ‘Happy’ in his performance this week but for me his body doesn’t dance. His upper body is too still so this results in a lack of dance characterisation for me. I gave him 8.5 and the judges 37.0.

Game was then on for the team challenge.

Team Hayley (highest placed girl last week) versus Team Ray (highest placed boy last week). The girls skated to Walk Like An Egyptian and displayed some excellent matching armwork. All the turns, lifts and spins were very well together and they gave an excellent performance. Then the boys skated to Uptown Girl. Again excellent matching within the choreography, spins lifts and tricks but I’m afraid with Ray in a team it is a no-contest. The judges gave the unanimous win to Team Ray so all the boys scores from their solo round were doubled.

Leaving the scoring: Ray 80.0, Sam 74.0, Kyran 66.0, Suzanne 37.0, Hayley 34.5, Beth 34.0 After the public vote Suzanne and Kyran and were in the bottom two for the skate off with Suzanne leaving the show after the judges unanimous vote to save Kyran who survives to next week.

ITV ORIHUELA RFC BATTLE HARD WIN

On Saturday ITV Orihuela RFC cadetes entertained their UCAM counterparts, while the A team played Lorca.

With all to play for after winning in Murcia earlier on in the season and winner takes all it looked like it was going to be a close game.

UCAM took the game to Orihuela RFC and came out of the blocks a lot quicker, but their defence stood strong and slowly got into the game, but it was UCAM who struck the first blow with a converted try.

The home side went straight on the attacked and soon got their reward with Javi’s run splitting the defence to score and Gregory converting.

With both sides playing excellent attacking rugby it was UCAM who got the upperhand with two more tries before half time and some excellent defence to keep Orihuela out.

Unfortunately, the second half was much of the same with great defensive work by both teams, but it just was not to be for the home team with some great breaks and excellent handling they kept been stopped just short of the try line.

This was an excellent advertisement by two teams of how rugby should be played and for rugby in Spain. With these players the future looks great for both teams. The coach, Pedro, and his players can hold their heads up high as this is the first defeat of the season, and he has done a brilliant job with the kids.

Up next was the A team against Lorca and this was suppose to be an easier prospect, but it was far from it, playing against a very determined Lorca team and some great defensive work by them.

ITV Orihuela came out of the blocks very quickly and from a 5 metre lineout and driving maul the captain, Victor saw the gap and went over for the first try of the game and looked like a comfortable afternoon for the home side, how wrong could we have been.

Lorca then showed that then are not to

be taken lightly with their defence holding up strong and then had the cheek to break out of defence and go up the other end and score a converted try of their own.

With Orihuela not taking their chances it looked like it could cost them with Lorca been very dangerous on the break.

Eventually the hard work paid off with Samoano racing over for another try for the home side to put them back in front, it was still not over with Lorca scoring another good try to go in 14-10 up, and to be honest they just edged the first half.

Now Orihuela RFC had to dig deep in the second half it they were to get anything out off the game. The game started off very much like the first one with Orihuela on the attack, but great defence keeping them out, but then Anuar saw the gap to go over to get back the lead, 15-14, which gave way to a very tense final quarter. With gaps starting to appear on the pitch it was both defences that stood out, and eventually Tirso struck the final blow, and cruel one for Lorca, to go over under the posts to get the all important bonus point try, with Jose getting the extras to make the final score 22-14.

Congratulations must go to Lorca for the way they played and were very unlucky not to get a losing bonus point, which they deserved. ITV Orihuela RFC were not at their best today and will be very happy to come away with the try bonus point win, they also know what a narrow escape they had.

The next game is this weekend on 22 February away to Cartagena for the ITV Orihuela A team kicking off at around 17.00 in a re-arranged league fixture.

I am now at Zoco Market on Sundays down at the back towards the bottom of the market, so come on down there for all of your rugby branded clothing and anything you want to know about rugby in the area.

Also this weekend is the 6 Nations again and will be shown down at the rugby bar, The Steakhouse in Rojales.

Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15.

So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are.

Quesada Golf Society

Last Wednesday, the Society played their third game in 2014 at Bonalba. After a few dull, overcast and windy days the sun returned and the playing conditions were ideal for golf. The course was in reasonable condition with the greens very quick. The format of the game was an individual Stableford.

The winners on the day were:Gold Div: 1st with 28 points, Ron Stevenson, who beat his best buddy in 2nd place Tony White with 28 points on C/B. 3rd with 25 points was Alan Briggs.

Silver Div: 1st with 32 points Terry Smith, 2nd with 27 points Janet Candlin, 3rd with 25 points Pam Martin.

The best guest was Ron Smith. The player who played the most shots and picked up the “Roy” Trophy was “Storming” Norman Lewis who said on the day he played more like “Jerry” Lewis.

The Nearest the Pins, with only one winner on the day, was the “magician”

sport Mick Rowan on hole 14. The “Charity” scratch-card winner was the overall winner of the golf on the day Terry Smith who obviously had a great and also a somewhat fortuitous day. For the scratch-card he chose his favourite team Tottenham but put his name in the wrong square against Scottish giants Cowdenbeath who turned out to be the winning team.

The presentations were made at the Societies base, the Quesada Country Club after the game. A tasty hot & cold buffet was provided by mine hosts Dave and Anita for which the Society is as always extremely grateful.

Fantastic weekend for Torrevieja swimmers

A fantastic weekend for “Club Natacion Torrevieja” swimmers. Two teams competed in different pools across the region. The Masters of Club Natacion Torrevieja travelled on Saturday to Elda, Alicante, for their 3rd Timed Control in anticipation of next weeks Spanish Nationals in Palma, Majorca and two of the Infantil girls team spent the whole weekend at the Olympic pool in Castellon, Valencia, fighting to earn national qualification times and medals in the Winter Regional Championships.

For the Masters in Elda new personal bests were won by Adam Stewart in his 50m and 200m freestyle events and for Beryl Altabas in her 50m Freestyle event. Other team members Gillian McNiece and Paul Matthews clocked up some excellent times in their 100m Backstroke, 200m freestyle, 50m Butterfly and 400m Freestyle events.

Both swimmers times ranked them high up in the national rankings for the whole of Spain. Unfortunately Rafael Alonso and Vicki Connolly were unable to participate due to illness for Rafael and for Vicki as her daughter was in the Infantil Regional Championships.

Both will join the team this weekend

in Majorca for the National Spanish Championships.

And back in the Olympic pool in Castellon, Valencia, Piroska Rideg and Zoe Connolly battled it out with the best swimmers in the region for medals and national qualifying times in their chosen races. Stress levels were high as opportunities to race against the best in the Community, in an Olympic pool, with electronic timing are rare. Both girls had previously qualified to compete this year with times from local competitions. Saturday morning found Piroska up against the best in the 100m Butterfly and Zoe in the 200m Backstroke events. Piroska held onto her PB and placed 10th in this event, Zoe flew in her 200m backstroke race knocking a massive 10 seconds of her previous best to gain a place in the Summer Infantil National Competition to be held in July in Barcelona with a time of 2:40:33.

Back again to the pool Saturday afternoon both Piroska and Zoe worked hard in the 200m Individual Medley event. Zoe managed to improve her time by 6 seconds and take 4th place for her age. An evenings rest and an early night the girls were back in the 100m backstroke event Sunday morning.

Both had good swims, Piroska placed 8th for her age and Zoe 3rd, moving Zoe up from 10th to 3rd. Lastly in the pool Sunday afternoon, drained from a stressful weekend Zoe attacked the 400m Individual Medley event, one of the hardest events as it comprises all strokes in 100m sprints, not many swimmers will taken on this event, however Zoe embraced it and knocked a further 8 seconds off her previous time and edged closer to the elusive national time of 5:47:10 with a time of 5:53:02.

Calling all Modern Jive/Ceroc/Le Roc Dancers. Towards the end of October the dance groups of Moraira and Jalon hope to hold a Fun Dance Contest in Benidorm.

It will be a weekend aimed at getting all the dancers in the areas of Torrevieja and Hondon together with the dancers in our area, for fun, and to help promote the love of Ceroc.

The classes of the contest will be biased towards beginners and there will be opportunities to see different styles with the Advanced Dancers from England who will be joining us as Judges.

We plan to reserve rooms at a reasonable hotel for those of you who will need to stay over in Benidorm.

As this is not a money making exercise we will keep the prices to a minimum, aimed at covering expenses only.

On Saturday 25th February, Torrevieja CC play their first match of the season. a friendly match against a team from La Manga. It will give an indication as to whether the training carried out over winter has had any effect. The game starts at 1100 o’clock at the athletics track in the Torrevieja sports centre.

The Limaria Benefit Cheat We have both worked all our lives. We have lived within our means, scrimped and saved, had the odd bit of luck both good and bad, and have allowed the Government to help itself to a portion of our hard earned income on the promise that in our later years it would reward our faith by the payment of a pension.

So far this has proved to be the case – we are in receipt of a pension each, and for the meantime, the Winter Fuel Allowance, but that is as far as benefits go with us. And apart from a bit of a grumble about the Winter Fuel Allowance, we are in accord with our benefit-free existence.

So it was a bit of a shock to discover that we have

a benefit cheat right in our very midst! Despite my surname, I do not consciously consort with the criminal classes, and to find that our unimpeachable reputation was being sullied by an opportunistic exploiter of charity is shocking, to say the least!

For some time I have been puzzled by the steady weight gain of the Dog That Is Not Ours. As her personal chef I am in control of portion size, and have significantly reduced the amount in her dinner bowl in correlation with the expansion of her waistline.

I took her to task on the subject of her increasing girth, but she pointed out that she was merely getting older, adding tactlessly that middle aged females do spread a bit, finishing off with maybe I should take her for more walks.

The evidence is there – she’s cadging; appealing to human sentimentality, hypnotising innocent people with her steady brown eyed stare and pathetic, if portly demeanour. She is preying on their kindly natures, conning them into believing that she is a poor, homeless waif without a friend in the world.

She is an unashamed, scrounging Benefit Cheat!

A zoo in Alqueria may seem a curious concept considering the strangest of all creatures are the humans that walk the streets of the Pueblo. The behaviour of the most disgusting of animals is somewhat better than that of the vast majority of Alquerians. Some thought the Zoo was a scheme by the World Wildlife Fund to give the animals something to look at and stop them from becoming bored. It was however an Alquerian ploy to attract cash rich visitors from Spain. As the health and safety laws in Alqueria are non-existent particularly ferocious animals could easily be exhibited.

Unfortunately it isn’t only heath and safety that is not regulated there is also a distinct lack of building regulations. The result, shoddy pen construction which allowed several of the most vicious animals to escape some weeks before the attraction was even opened. They appeared to have made every effort to quit Alquerian territory as rapidly as possible and now roam the Spanish mainland devouring domestic animals and terrorising the population. The Alquerian authorities of course deny all knowledge of such carnivorous escapees. These animals were replaced with sheep, goats and the like. To make them appear like lions, tigers and drooling grisly bears cardboard ears, plastic teeth and rubber claws were attached to strategic areas. In most cases this didn’t work very well and only confused the less intelligent of the remaining animals.

Loco Paco when appointed chief keeper of the zoo responded by wearing a pith helmet and carrying a lion tamer’s whip. It seemed a strange choice for a man whose only friends are an invisible two metre tall rodent and a Saharan Dung Beetle called Benjy. His

ability to recognise one species from another was also thrown into doubt when he was seen throwing bread to helicopters at Murcia Airport.

I Blame My Bad Back on the Politicians When I’m not particularly tired and feeling masochistic on Thursday nights, I often tune in to Question Time on the good old reliable, politically unbiased BBC. It’s not worth recording here what transpires between the equally pompous and self satisfied members of the panel who - in the name of even handedness by the producers – are represented by the three perceived main political parties.

As always the numbers are made up with two other individuals invited to take part and add their invaluable contributions. These are a mixture of politicians from ‘lesser’ parties; journalists; historians; intellectuals and pseudo intellectuals; religious leaders and even comedians.

And it’s not even worth wasting breath on the fact that it usually becomes clear early on in the programme, that on the odd occasion when individuals who actually espouse some common sense ideas do participate, they encounter a hostile audience. An audience that appears to have been carefully selected to give an impression that certain views expressed by these panellists, are deeply unpopular even though it’s obvious to the rest of us that this is not the case in the country at large.

What has become blindingly clear to me over a period of some years now, is that when it comes to politics as it exists in our country, there is no real choice

It was akin to a ritual mugging and overcharging was rife. Everything from car parking to admittance came at a premium. The squalor of the Zoo itself was breathtaking. Attempts to pass domestic pets off as ferocious man-eaters fooled no one apart from Loco Paco of course. He was in his element but couldn’t understand why the tabby cat with glued on plastic fangs didn’t devour the half a horse dropped from the back of a Land Rover. The success of the undertaking was never in doubt.

The end came when the animals made a mass breakout and gave themselves up to the Spanish zoological authorities. The Zoo simply joined the ever increasing list of failed Alquerian ventures.

Each of the two main parties are predictable and uniformly inept, and now that we have the experience of a third party tasting real power - albeit on the backs of their coalition colleagues - it is evident that they too are equally incompetent and unfit to govern.

There are no good guys/bad guys any more.

We have seen what each is capable of and it is a depressingly similar story every time.

How can we ever put our trust in men and women who have so blatantly milked the expenses system for their own ends and who have repeatedly lied to Parliament and the British people?

These are the same politicians who we are expected to put our faith in when they make life and death decisions over national and world ranging issues.

One party lowers taxes which in part means that those at the top of the food chain benefit d i s p r o p o r t i o n a t e l y.

Boo! says the other party . . . that’s looking after the rich. The good news is we will raise taxes for the rich says the other lot. Hooray!

Say the workers and spongers.

The bad news is, that according to their new definition of rich, many moderately well off people who have worked hard all their lives; contributed to the countries bloated benefit system and have generally added to the prosperity of the nation, will fall into this category.

I am sick to death of hearing the word racist banded around as a weapon to silence those who genuinely fear for the future of our country because of the increasing strain it puts on resources.

Forget the words: immigrant, foreigner and asylum seeker . . . there are simply too many human

beings pouring into our tiny country; a land that has become second only to Malta as the most densely populated nation in all of Europe.

But still they come.

I am also tired of politicians publicly referring to their leaders by chummy first names – David this, Ed that and Nick whatever. It was a novelty when a certain Mr Blair thought this might be a good idea to break down barriers and show the masses that they were just like us.

But the novelty has gone and the psychology no longer works. And when politicians begin interviews with the words, “And let me make this perfectly clear . . .” I want to throw up, because you know for sure that what is about to come streaming out of their mouths is anything but clear.

We need a new system and we need new, fresh and honest people who are prepared to go into politics without the constraints of a fixed, well worn party line and that of course means a new movement. And that’s the problem.

Where is that coming from?

One thing is for sure, the country is going to hell in a hand cart and when we see such madness as a Canadian holding the post of Governor of The Bank of England; Rolls Royce owned by Germans and Land Rover Jaguar

by Indians – the future looks bleak.

I don’t often write about politics in this vein, nor for that matter anything that can be taken too seriously – it’s not my brief. But I have had a tooth extraction this week and I’ve got a bad back, so I’m feeling jarred off and grumpy!

There was a steady wind: by the time we reached El Plantio golf course the wind had got steadily stronger, you could easily spot the tourists from the residents, the tourist were wearing shorts a golf shirt and possibly a thin pullover, the residents had between four and five layers of clothing depending on how acclimatised they had become over the years, things didn’t seem to bad

as we played off the first tee as we had a strong tail wind, but things changed as we turned the corner at the third tee to find that the wind was no longer in our favour, considering the time of the year and the damage caused by the winds the course was in reasonably good condition, we managed to keep the prices down for our players by using the free games to subsidise the golf, otherwise at €45 plus prize money it could have proved a pricey game.

Ruby’s Golf society’s fun day at Altorreal turned out to be perfect weather for golf, hot sunshine all day and hot golf with three players finishing on 35 points, but Colin Fear taking the win on countback.

Other winners on the day were nearest the pins Ian Bembridge, Theresa Wright and Roy Stanley. Longest drive was a bit controversial as the hole was changed half way through the game, but eventually won by Nigel Wright.

Blind pairs were chosen in Ruby’s bar after the game and Captain Jim and Theresa drawn out as the winners. The longest walk was well earned by Graham Hall and football card won by Brain Wilson.

The top four positions are all vying for the top spot, and with all trying to make a distinctive move it was obvious the weather and the slick greens would be a deciding factor. Las Ramblas were one of the teams hoping to close on the leaders and with John Wheeler the highest scorer 32 points, they were able to be 10 – 4 league point winners.

Eurogolf, La Marquesa 66 players took part in our Team Game today which was a Valentines Hidden Partners, at our home course of La Marquesa, on Thursday 13 February. This game is a basic Stableford round with your good or bad partner being drawn, once everyone has handed their cards in. The weather conditions could not have been better with very little wind and glorious sunshine, making ideal conditions for high scoring.

This would have been a beautiful summer’s day in the UK. Commiserations to Gloria, who came in with the highest score of the day i.e. 40 points, but did not feature in the prizes.

Welcome to your new handicap achieved without winning a prize. Now that is a first!! Also to Marilyn who apparently had her best drive of the day on the 18th and succeeded in removing the side mirror of a passing car on the adjacent road. Better luck next time, girls.

Racing entered this important game having to reshuffle their line up due to the suspension of Carlos Valderrama so Racing keeper Scott Brunton slotted in at right back and Alex Agular in as keeper. Racing dominated the opening minutes and created several decent chances on goal.

The Racing defence coped well with the attacking efforts of the home team who couldn’t handle the the speed and power of Brunton,Cockroft,Zarkov &

Captain Medina.

Despite having a large amount of possession it was the home team who scored first with a break down Racings right side when Brunton was exposed two on one due to the lack of tracking back from right midfield and the strike slotted into the back of Racings goal.

Boulkab switched to attack along side Garcia and Gudmundsson to the right side of midfield to protect and help the defence when out of possession. On 33 mins Racing fell further behind when a clearly off side goal for Fulgencio was allowed to stand due to very poor refereeing.

Unfortunately this same referee has done this to Racing a few weeks back and clearly doesn’t like the fact that Racing is a made up of a group of multinational players who represent the multinational Orihuela Costa region.

VISTABELLA GOLF – 12th FEBRUARY 2014 It was back to our home course to play a stableford.

On a cold and windy morning 26 members & guests teed off adorned in all styles of winter garb.

The course still has its winter coat on dormant grass on the fairways and the greens were pretty slick like a snooker table, it should be mentioned that the person responsible for the pin placements must be a masochist as the scoring not that good, with the top score being 32 points and that was by a visitor.

For Rocket Ron it was good to see an old friend Alan Williams, he had not seen for going on 5 years, Alan joined us for a game.

Before the Christmas break all thoughts were of promotion as Mazarron were just two points away from an automatic promotion position and four points behind the league leaders. They have now slumped to 12th and are ten points away from the promotion positions.

Mazarron took the lead after 25 minutes when a free kick was headed home by Enrique but Cabezo equalised almost immediately.

Alfonso’s powerful drive forced an excellent save by the home keeper but Atletico Cabezo capitalised on another mistake in the Mazarron defence and took the lead four minutes before the interval.

TORREGOLF.EU at La Peraleja Tuesday 11th.February On a very cold and windy day but have to say dry, we had a full turn out of members to play this Sevi course and it has to be said that I am sure the conditions weather wise caused a day of very low scores and of course it does not help when one group of 4 finished up playing 2 holes out of sequence and were subsequently disqualified sure they need to go to Specsavers in order to read the course planner and when the so called sat nav showed that they were 700mtrs from the hole did they realise they were off course, ha!ha!.

However, our President also had problems trying to cope with glasses that were over 10 years old that he had to use due to having broken his current set while back in the UK last week so thanks go to Brian Coombes who was his guide dog for the day to tell him where the ball was on the tee and where it finished up. Enough of the laughs and lets get down to the results of our usual Stableford Competetion Category 1. 1st. Ron Matthews 31 points on c/b from John Aitchison 3rd.

Monte kicked off on a dull Sunday afternoon in front of a boisterous crowd of 240, quickly getting on top of the opposition.

For this month’s meeting a group of 19 players visited the established course at Las Ramblas under the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

Team CHRISTIAN, OROURKER, FERNANDO, RUBEN, ANGEL, OMAR, MARCOS, MANUEL, RODRIGO, EDU AND VAZQUINO.

After 10 minutes Marcos fired a fierce shot just past the post, then 2 minutes later Rodrigo opened the scoring giving their goalkeeper no chance, driving the ball past 2 defenders into the net. Next it was Orihuela’s chance to score but their tall no 11 headed just wide.

Monte were now getting on top, and only 2 very good saves kept Orihuela in the game which then was made more difficult when Vaz was upended in the box. Sending the goalkeeper the wrong way Vaz took the penalty and made it 2-0 on the half hour.

Another good save from Vaz just before half time left Juanpe with a decision to make. Would he push for a third or defend.

When after just 5 minutes Angel had to go injured replaced by Diego Juanpe struck. 10 men back, Vaz up front on his own and try to ensure Orihuela did not get through. Christian made a great one handed save on 55 minutes and 5 minutes later made an even better save only to see it fall to

an opposing forward who from close range blasted his chance over the bar. It was all Orihuela now and wave after wave crashed against a determined rear guard. Vaz ran his socks off and forced their goalkeeper into making a couple of good saves, but with Monte now under pressure Dani came on for Omar. With time running out what seemed to be a sure goal was headed off the line and Monte fans breathed a sigh of relief. Carlos replaced Orourker who was standing in for the suspended Dimitry and on 90 minutes Christian pulled off another good save. Overall it was a good performance which saw Edu defending the area just inside his own half slowing the opposition attacks down.

Micheal Elliott’s decision to name Christian as the Man of the match would not be questioned by anybody who saw the game.

It was nice to see David at the game so soon after the second operation on his damaged knee, although it will probably be next season before he plays again. The name card was won by Vern with Man. united.

Next week we go to Callosa Deportiva “B” and will leave bar Tabalache 1 hour before Kick-off. Match details will appear on our web site as soon as we know them.

Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin Bowling League Week Nineteen played 11th February 2014

Tonight saw the Quarter Finals of the Cornish Pride Cup, sponsored by Shane and Sue Winfield of Cornish Pride Los Dolses.

The fixture list threw up an intriging game, with Crazy Pinz taking on Lucky Strike and, they were paired against each other in the Cup. Lucky Strike took the first game by 10 pins, But with Eva Riitta Manninen bowling a 190 scratch game, CP took game 2 with a 610 handicap game.

All came down to the third game and although LS took the game, they couldn’t claw but enough pins to claim the overall pinfall and, CP ran out winners by 77 pins.

With the Dreamers taking on S***T Happens in the cup, they could only manage a total of 1666 bowling against Bar Mosquitos but, this was enough

to take a 7-1 points win against a lacklustre BM. Split Happens however, bowling against the Mixers on the night, were more than efficient, bowling a total of 1721 thus, enabling them to beat The Dreamers and, earning a 4 – 4 draw against The Mixers.

Team Finland were only interested in their league position and, with all three bowling so consistently, they powered over Cabello Negro, whose Paku Hakonen’s 626 handicap series, wasn’t enough to prevent TF taking the game 8 – 0 and, with the other results going for them, moved to the top of the league.

Splash moved easily into the semi finals of the cup, with a 4 – 4 draw against Los Lobos and, with all three bowlers bowling above their averages, blew away Los Bandidos in the Cup. It was a hard night for the league leaders Hall Y Day, and after three very close games a

For 2014 we have joined forces with the Lo Marabu GS who play their monthly ‘social game’ the same days as us so we both benefit from the cost economies of scale for booking a larger group than would otherwise be the case.

The weather forecast was ‘spot on’ with bright clear skies and extremely high winds and Las Ramblas is not for the faint hearted in these conditions and this reflected in some of the scores.

Sporting Camposol the match. Sporting started energetically. The first 20 minutes were two great chances created.

From a magnificent pass from newcomer Joseda came Moha face to face with the goalkeeper of Minerva. He dribbled around the keeper and was able to shoot the bal in a empty goal. But out of nowhere came the No. 4 of Minerva with an ultimate sliding he saved on the goal line. Another lost opportunity. 6 minutes later, it was the new striker Pedro that ran through the defense. But his shot was missed also.
