British energy is cheaper than Spanish energy
A survey by energy think tank Vaasaett shows that by taking exchange rates out of the equation, Helsinki, at 11.43 is the cheapest of the 23 European cities surveyed for electricity prices. Households in Berlin (28.49) - the most expensive - pay two-and-a-half times as much, largely due to taxes and subsidies designed to boost renewable energy production. Even after the recent price rises, however, London (17.75) remains one of the cheaper places to buy electricity, and below the European average of 20.34, while the figure quoted for Madrid is 24.34 But prices haven’t been going up everywhere - electricity bills have fallen in nine cities in the past month, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, with the Hungarian government reducing prices by 11% and its Croatian counterpart cutting them by 6%. Gas prices also vary a great deal. Working from an average of 7.91, households in Stockholm - the most expensive city pay 15.29, three times more than those in the cheapest, Luxembourg City, at 5.23. Stockholm is much more expensive than everywhere else simply because the gas
market is so small - there are only 33,000 households buying gas in the whole of Sweden. London (5.75) is the second cheapest city, where households pay well below the European average, despite recent price rises. In the past month, seven countries have seen gas price rises, while eight have seen prices fall. Of course prices must be seen in the context of people’s ability to pay them, and fuel poverty is seen as a major concern within the UK, where 6.5% of the population say they cannot afford to keep their homes adequately warm, according to European Union figures. But the situation for those living in Bulgaria is much worse, where almost half the population (47%) say they cannot afford to heat their homes properly. Many Lithuanians (34%), Cypriots (31%), Portuguese (27%) and Greeks (26%) in particular also struggle to keep their homes warm. At the other end of the scale, less than 2% of Scandinavians cannot afford to keep warm at home. The average across the EU is about 11%, and the average for Spain is just under 9%.
Man kidnapped by bogus police in Spain
British heroin smuggler captured in Spain
Francis Brennan, 25, who fled to Spain to avoid being sentenced for an attack has been abducted by three men posing as police officers, police in the UK believe.
David Mather, 57, who has been on the run for more than a year has been captured in La Linea, close to the border with Gibraltar.
Merseyside Police said that he had not been seen since he was stopped in a friend’s car, handcuffed and taken away on 24 January.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Mather, from Salford, was part of a three-man gang who were jailed for bringing in £582,000 worth of heroin into the UK from Belgium.
They said Brennan fled to Alicante in October to avoid being sentenced for an assault in Thames Valley in 2012.
He was a target of the NCA’s Operation Captura which targeted British ex-pats wanted in a crackdown on criminals living in the lap of luxury on the Costa Del Sol. Extradition proceedings are now underway.
His parents, who admit he was involved in crime, have pleaded for information. Merseyside Police are working with their Spanish counterparts the Guardia Civil and the National Crime Agency to trace Brennan, who is originally from Anfield. His parents Carl and Janet Brennan said they had pleaded with him not to leave the country but he would not listen. His father said: “We know Francis isn’t an angel but he is our son. As time goes by we are worrying more and more on a daily basis.” Det Supt Richie Carr from Merseyside Police said: “Francis’s disappearance is completely out of character and because of this, as well as his associations and lifestyle, ourselves and the Spanish police are extremely concerned for his safety. “We believe he has been taken against his will and we and his family are hopeful that someone in the criminal fraternity here in Merseyside has information that could help bring about the safe return of Francis.”
He had been on the run since January last year when he was sentenced to 18 years in his absence at Sheffield Crown Court.
Hank Cole, head of international operations for the NCA, said: “This arrest is a result of close working with the Spanish authorities. Mather was using false identity documents to try and evade capture but we were able to track him down. It demonstrates the NCA and its partners have the capability to pursue fugitives wherever they are in the world.” Inside the bumper were 32 wrapped packages of heroin. It is believed the vehicle had been used on a number of occasions to import similar amounts of drugs into the UK. Mather’s arrest means 58 individuals appealed for since Operation Captura have now been caught. However, Spanish police are on the lookout for five foreign fugitives who are thought to be hiding in Spain, including two British men and a Colombian woman who is wanted for murder. Police asked the public to be on the lookout for Kevin Thomas Parle, 33, who is wanted in Britain for the murder of a young mother who was shot dead when three men burst into her home in Liverpool in 2005. It is thought that he may be living in Alicante. Police are also looking for Christopher Guest More, 36, who is wanted in connection for beating a man to death during an attempted robbery at a remote farmhouse in Cheshire in 2003. Long seen as a place where British criminals could blend in among their many resident compatriots, the sunspots of southern and eastern Spain have seen a string of major arrests in recent years. Last year alone Spanish police detained 35 fugitives wanted by British authorities.

Storms and floods unearth unexploded wartime bombs
Bomb disposal teams in the South West have dealt with double the number of unexploded ordnance than in the same period last year. This dramatic increase in the number of wartime bombs unearthed has been caused by the winter storms and flooding. Since mid December, the Royal Navy’s Southern Dive Unit has recovered or disposed of 244 items of ordnance. During the same period last year, they dealt with just 108 items. Although almost 70 years after the end of WWII, unexploded shells, bombs and mines continue to be discovered on beaches and in harbours around Britain every year, and the Royal Navy’s Southern Dive Unit is tasked with making these devices safe. Its area of responsibility stretches for some 2,250km (1,400 miles). It begins from the highwater mark in Hull and proceeds seaward to the territorial limit, and then runs clockwise around the British Isles - including the Isle of Wight, Channel Islands, and Isles of Scilly - to finish in Liverpool. The members of the Southern Dive Unit are dubbed the ‘human mine hunters’, and are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They train how to handle unexploded
devices in an old torpedo test lake at their base on Horsea Island in Hampshire. Wearing heavy diving rigs that create no bubbles, the divers are able to get alongside the ordnance. As they approach a test device in the water, the diver uses a ‘go slow’ approach. This means he only fins once every 3m. The team is trained to work in zero visibility, and can identify the type of ordnance and country of origin by measuring it with their hands and forearms. The diver then wraps the projectile in plastic explosives - this is called a ‘counter mine’. He retreats to a safe distance of at least 600m, depending on the size of the munition, and the bomb is detonated. “The explosive is normally of very high quality,” said Chris O’Flaherty, the commanding officer of the Fleet Diving Squadron. “The Germans were very good engineers. A number of them aren’t viable but an awful lot of them are, and we prove that regularly by the manner in which we dispose of them. “The explosive deteriorates and the main charge is usually relatively stable. It’s the detonator that’s the dangerous part.”

Spanish naval vessel disrupts Royal Navy parachute training
Britain is to make a formal protest to Madrid over an “illegal incursion” by a Spanish naval vessel into Gibraltar’s territorial waters that forced British Naval chiefs to suspend a parachute training session off the Rock. The Spanish naval boat approached the landing zone where personnel from the Royal Navy’s Submarine Parachute Assistance Group were carrying out practice jumps into the sea. HMS Sabre, a Gibraltar Squadron patrol boat which was acting as the safety vessel during the exercise, was forced to break away to shadow the Spanish naval vessel until it left British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. Warnings were issued to the Spanish vessel, which is said to have used a fake name and call sign, but it only left after radioing back that it was in Spanish waters, according to a report in the Gibraltar Chronicle. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed that the “incursion” would be raised at a high level within the Spanish government by Simon Manly, the British
Ambassador to Madrid. “There was an incursion into British waters near Gibraltar by the Spanish Navy on 18 February, during a Royal Navy exercise. The exercise went ahead irrespective of this incursion,” said an FCO spokesman in London.“We are raising this at a high level with the Spanish government and will be issuing a formal protest. Neither this incident nor other incursions change the fact of UK sovereignty over British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.” The incident is the latest in the diplomatic spat over sovereignty of the Rock, and which escalated last summer when Spain objected to Gibraltar’s creation of an artificial reef in its waters. Last year 446 illegal incursions into British waters were made by Spanish maritime forces, almost double that of the year before, and the summer of 2013 will be remembered for the stringent border checks and lengthy delays caused by Spanish authorities on those crossing to and from Spain.
Dolly Parton to headline at Glastonbury
Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis has confirmed that country star Dolly Parton will play this year’s festival. She will appear on the Pyramid stage, which last year featured fellow country star Kenny Rogers. Festival-goers enjoyed a mass singalong of Islands in the Stream - his hit duet recorded with Parton. “It’s one of those rare things where someone like [Dolly] is in the country at the same time as Glastonbury, and we’re really, really excited about this. Hopefully Kenny put in a good word,” said Eavis. In an interview with Radio 4’s Front Row programme, Eavis added that she had made it her “life’s mission” to get Parton to agree to perform at Glastonbury, after being told years ago that she did not do festivals. “She stands totally alone, she’s such a brilliant star and I think one of the greatest female stars of our generation,” said Eavis, adding “And she doesn’t tour very often.” She also appeared to rule out rumoured
headline acts Prince, Stone Roses and Fleetwood Mac, telling BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz it was “unlikely” they would feature on the bill. “I very much doubt any of them will be on this year,” said Eavis. However, she did admit timings were still a work in progress. Speaking at the NME Awards Debbie Harry confirmed that her iconic five-piece band Blondie had been booked for Glastonbury. “We just heard today – we’re going to be doing Glastonbury!” Harry told Bang Showbiz. The band, who picked up the Godlike Genius award at this year’s NME ceremony, previously performed at the festival in 1999. So far, Arcade Fire have been the first confirmed headliners announced for 2014. Lily Allen, Warpaint and Suzanne Vega have also been secured for the three-day event, which takes place at Worthy Farm, Somerset between June 25 and 29.

CAMPO COPPER THEFT
During the early hours of Friday, February 21st., Police Local, patrolling north west of the town of Pilar de la Horadada, decided to check out a suspicious vehicle within the Romero Golf Complex. With the approach of the boys in blue, the would be nocturnal golfers, made off at speed, towards in with the spirit of competition, the lights of a nearby village, with Zand agreed unanimously, that it had Victor One in hot pursuit. The car was generated addition business, and looked forward to becoming involved with future incentives to bring Unless readers of customers through their doors. local press had been
eventually found, less it’s occupants, tucked away in a side street, but with the boot area, crammed with rolls of copper wire, damaged light units and cast inspection plates, from the lamp standards within the Romero complex. Rolls of copper cable were also discovered where the car was first spotted. All together, some 300 KGs of stolen copper wire was recovered. I would hazard a guess that the recovered cable can not be re-used, so more unnecessary expense again. Councillor for Public Safety, Lancharro Francisco, stated that this excellent police work, showed how important maintaining these night patrols are. Let us hope that collars can be felt in the very near future. Mind how you go.
ANNIVERSARY GREETINGS S.I.S.
A CARNIVAL CONVEYANCE OF DELIGHT Friday February 28th., saw the 10 o’clock “Castelar Special” waiting for the “Home” signal to drop, in readiness to take it’s cargo of pupils and teachers, along the twisting streets of San Pedro del Pinatar, to meet the Fat Controller in Church Square. Some 18 months ago, it was touch and go, as to the future of this most excellent body of learning, as readers of my past jottings on the school and it’s problems at the time, will recall. Now, in keeping with the railway theme, they have green lights all the way. Taking on water, in the square, it was soon time to set the points, and head back down the branch line to school.
for a short vacation on the dark side of the moon, that fact that the first anniversary of The Samaritans in Spain, Punta Marina charity shop, occurred on Saturday 1st of March, could not have escaped notice! At the time of my jottings, the grand event will have passed, and the dust, no doubt, may have settled, but the most splendid work of the Samaritans continues. Formed in the United Kingdom some 60 years ago, but here in Spain, it is but 5 years old. The volunteers within the Samaritans come from all walks of life, and here in Espana, offer support to English
speaking people, of any age, any time, day or night. I recall, when, back in the U.K., as a member of H.M. Special Constabulary, I spent a 12 hour overnight shift with the Solihull Samaritans. It was a humbling experienced, one I will never forget. As with the U.K., Samaritans here in Spain, need funding, which is why they have regular fund raising events, dinners and golf tournaments. The Samaritans in Spain: you talk, they listen. This is one organisation I can never refuse to help. Their 24 hour help line is 902 88 35 35

It would seem, at long last, the surgery in Campoverde, is to get an additional doctor. Mayor Jose’ Fidel Ros, from Pilar De La Horadada, had a site meeting recently with the Medical Director of Primary Care, Hipolito Caro. Additional space within the existing surgery is being sorted, with computer terminals and additional wiring being installed. The new doctor, will take on 500 patients, initially on duty for 2 days a week.

What is the Cadastre?
Legal Matters
Help for Expats in Spain
(in Spanish: Catastro) The cadastre is a comprehensive register of all the properties description and boundaries. A cadastre commonly includes details of the ownership, the tenure, the precise location, the dimensions (and area), the cultivations if rural, and the value of individual parcels of land. The cadastral system is also used to value the properties and therefore to set the Council Tax (IBI) on each property. Note that the cadastral records for many properties are out of date and inaccurate, and it is your duty, as property owner, to inform the Cadastre of those errors (size, boundaries, ownership, etc). For example, after building a house, pool, garage, etc on a plot of land, you must inform the Cadastre, that on your land now there is a new construction and tell them the specifications of that building. This is done by presenting a form to
the Cadastre (Form 902N), together with the deeds (if the construction has been duly declared at the Land Registry), an architect plan to scale of the location and size and a brief description of the building. Once the construction is duly inscribed in the Cadastre, the job is finished, and you will start to receive the revised bills for the Council Tax. So, what are the main differences between Cadastre and Land Registry? Whilst the Land Registry (Registro de la Propiedad) and the Title deeds (escritura) confirms who owns the property, in which percentage, if is there limitations or charges (mortgage, public auctions, Tribunal disputes, etc), the Cadastre details will give you a better understanding of the boundaries (usually in a visual form) as well as the size and description of the property. The same principle applies to all taps. Wrap paper towel all around areas the base of the taps where the limescale usually gathers. Then add hot vinegar onto the paper towel sheets until they are saturated. Follow the same method used in the previous top for removing limescale from the shower head. Leave for about an hour, then rinse thoroughly and buff to a shine. This does not work with taps or showers that

are plated - you will ruin the plating.
Beautiful Baths
All baths are easily scratched no matter what they are made of. The shine can be ruined if you use an abrasive cleaner and a rough cloth. By using a cream cleaner, specially designed for use in a bath together with a sponge, which is very soft and gentle, your bath will clean up beautifully and maintain its lovely shine and is scratch free.
Freshen Up
When cleaning the toilet bowl, use a paper towel. It’s much more hygienic to throw some scouring powder down the bowl, rub with paper towel until clean, throw the paper towel away, flush the loo and hey presto...a clean toilet.
Laundry Fresh
Boys in the house? Line their laundry baskets with a couple of sheets of paper towel sprinkled with tea tree oil to keep nasty smells at bay.
Winning Windows
When you clean your windows, use 25% vinegar mixed with 75% warm water. Put on your rubber gloves and immerse an old cotton towel in the water. Heavily rub on the windows and then scrunch up a piece of newspaper and use to buff up the windows. If there are any streaks left use a dry cloth to finish off.
Effective Cleaning
A good tip ...if you are cleaning the inside of the windows wipe horizontally. When you clean the outside wipe the window vertically. This is extremely handy for checking any streaks which may have been left. Vertical streaks will be on the outside and horizontal streaks will be on the inside!
Fragrant Fridge
If the little drain at the back of the fridge gets bunged up, take a piece of paper towel, dampen it and roll very tightly to fit into and clean the outlet.
Happy Cleaning!

Campo life with jenni Hola, everyone, Campo life with Jenni is back! I can´t believe it has been two months since I have put pen to paper. I really enjoy writing the articles, but find that there are not enough hours in the day to fit everything in. I will therefore be writing one article, at the beginning of each month, so I hope you will enjoy reading them and continue to learn about all things Spanish and Spanish inspired. We have been very fortunate again with the weather these last couple of months, in fact I have been caught unawares, as I thought we would have been quiet.. However, there have been so many people about, especially many who have had friends and family visiting and also a recent half term break has also seen an increase in the demand for all our activities, quad biking being the most popular. This area of Spain is traditionally popular with all those people escaping from a harsh European winter, Scandinavians, Dutch, Germans and of course the English. Another source of visitors come for the beaches and the summer, and again the English land in Alicante in droves, as do the Spaniards, generally from Madrid and other inland towns. There is however, another source of visitor that I have never come across before, and I am actually astounded, not only at how many there are, but at their ages too! I never realised how lucky Spain actually was, they have so much to offer a traveller, and boy do they come in droves, but not to our area of Spain. These are young travellers average age are 20 - 24 years and they come mostly from America, Australia and to a lesser extent other European Countries. Their aim is not only to travel but to experience the culture and Spanish lifestyle and to combine that with travelling. They normally visit the more traditional tourist areas like Seville and Granada in Andalusia, and then up the coast and bypass this area completely and
if they stop in this region at all, it is normally Valencia. Many of these young people travel in couples and are highly educated and offer many varied skills which they are willing to trade ie. volunteer, for a place to stay and some good food. The reason why I know so much about this group of people is that I myself have been using their services. As I pointed out before, this area does have visitors, but it is irregular. One day or even week you can be super busy and the next, especially if the weather is bad, you can sit twiddling your thumbs - The restaurants can certainly bear testament to this. Many hold on through the winter months by their nails, limping along until they can reap the benefits of a busy summer! This makes it very difficult to afford to employ staff over the entire year, and this is where the ´volunteer´ fills the gap. I am not what you would call a ´traditional host´- (we are in fact very popular, and receive many requests) in that most hosts, and believe me there are so many in Spain - A great number of them are expats who are fled the UK to embrace the ´Spanish Dream´ . They have brought huge fincas, and need help harvesting olives or are attempted to live a more sustainable lifestyle, so need help with gardening and other outdoor jobs, even renovating old buildings etc. One such host down in Andalusia, rebuilt his house, solely with the use of volunteers in exchange for some board and lodging and now runs a B&B again with the help of volunteers! A quick search of the website reveals that there are over 883 hosts in Spain. With headlines such as ¨Help in a beautiful ecological Guest House and artist residency to¨ Farming help needed in rural Extremadura - Spain’s secret paradise!¨cannot help but fail to pull at the heartstrings of all those who are wanting to find fulfillment in lifestyle away from the modern trappings and materialistic demands. As one 22 year
old, traveller from Germany puts it, ¨Right now I am looking for a new experience, a new way to fill my life with some new colours!¨ The Internet has fuelled this lifestyle, and it is a win, win situation for both traveller and host. We get invaluable help and they get a great place to stay which enables them to travel for longer periods and experience many different places. My current volunteers, who admittedly are slightly older, have been travelling now for 3 years, and have no plans at the moment to stop. They have been fantastic exercising and working the horses and helping with the maintenance, painting, tiling etc. Another couple who recently left here to travel up to France, travels for a week, volunteers for 2 or 3 and then they off again to pastures new. Interesting enough I noted there were 433 ´hosts´ in the UK, half as much as Spain, but it is great that there is so much choice! Another type of tourism I have come across is Gastro tourism, but more on that next time! I do hope you have
enjoyed your ´first installment´ In the meantime you are welcome to pop in, our tea garden is open daily from 11am - 4pm where you will more than likely meet with our ´volunteers´or even pick up a guide for walking in the beautiful Reserve that surrounds the lake. t a d e o r o G G l e k Loo Fe Could you buy a bra from a market stall? Why not? OF COURSE market stalls vary widely in terms of quality and service and it’s true to say that they are more commonly associated with ‘cheap and cheerful’ goods rather than high end quality. However, some stalls really are a treasure trove of opportunity. ONE SUCH stall is ‘Shani’s Lingerie’, based in Zoco and Playa Flamenca Markets, trading in the Costa Blanca for eight years, offering high quality branded goods such as Marks & Spencers, Naturana, Evans, Ballet and other high-end brand name products for a fraction of the price you would pay in the UK. Goods are all imported direct from the UK and Germany. In addition a quality service is offered – so often lacking here in Spain. These include a Bra fitting service and goods exchange policy if the size is not right or you find you just would prefer another style. Costs are kept down by trading in a market stall environment rather than a shop, with savings passed on to the customers. At prices less than half that of the UK, all Naturana bras are 12€ or less and M&S Bras start from 3€!

HEAD AND NECK PAIN Headaches are one of the most common reasons for people to seek medical attention. Headaches are more common in women than in men but prevalence tends to decrease with age. Up to 1 adult in 20 has a headache every day or nearly every day. Most of the population studies and research have focused on MH: migraine headaches, 6-8% of males and 15-18% of females in a period of a year. One in Four American households has a migraine sufferer, totalling and Approx. 29.5 million people. TTH: Tension type headaches are even more common: it affects two-thirds of males and over 80% of females in developed countries. Episodic TTH is the most common headache type reported in over 70% of some populations. (Chronic TTH is found in 1-3%). Chronic daily headache is perhaps the most disabling of the headache groups … those who suffer daily or nearly daily (15 days per month) report disabling complaints that interfere with daily activities. Work capacity and social activity is reduced in 60% of TTH patients and in almost all MH patients. Headaches are ranked at 19th highest disability chronically affecting daily life in all age groups and both sexes. Financial impact of headaches on the sufferer and society is of considerable concern. The prevalence of MH is highest between 25 to 55 years, corresponding to an individual’s most productive years. In the United Kingdom, some 25 million working days or school days are lost every year because of MH! Pharmaceutical Company’s make billions upon billions out of promoting drugs as pain relief for headaches when in so many cases we hold the gift in our own hands. The effects of the toxins we put in our bodies can do long term damage if abused on a regular basis. Drugs are a temporary measure for most headaches and mask the pain but do not get rid of the cause. Simple trigger point massage and compression alone releases chemicals that mimic morphine a more powerful aid to pain relief. Trigger points, or muscle knots, are a common cause of stubborn and strange aches and pains, and yet they are under-diagnosed, and can cause tension at these points resulting in Tension Headaches. The Science Under the back of the skull must be the single most pleasing and popular target for massage in the human body. No other patch of muscle gets such rave reviews. It has everything: deeply relaxing and satisfying sensations, and a dramatic therapeutic relevance to one of the most common of all human pains, the
common tension headache. And no wonder: without these muscles, your head would fall off. They feel just as important as they are because …….. Along with lots of other neck muscles, the sub occipital group — usually just called “the sub occipitals” — work overtime to keep your head balanced on top of your spine. In particular, they initiate and control fine movements. This is no small task: if you’re a big person, your head may weigh as much as a 10-pin bowling ball, and it is resting on a foundation only about one third as wide. These muscles have to be workaholics. Trigger points in the sub occipital muscle group are the most common cause of tension headaches. Your head may weigh as much as a 10-pin bowling ball! The sub occipitals are also partly “antagonized” (balanced) by the jaw muscles. This is an odd arrangement. Generally speaking you’ve got one muscle or group of muscles that pulls one way, and then muscles on the other side of the joint that pull the other way. But the jaw muscles do not affect the spinal joints, and cannot directly work against/with the sub occipitals to balance the head. Nevertheless, they do: muscle studies have shown that the jaw muscles behave much like they would in a more normal push-pull relationship with the sub occipitals. They function together and dysfunction together. Both of these muscle groups routinely harbour trigger points that cause headaches (among other things), and together they are the source of most tension headaches. Muscle pain in these groups are also likely triggers for migraines and cluster headaches.
WHAT A NIGHT WE HAD!
The FAST Fundraisers have done it again! On Saturday, 1st March at ‘THE BLACK BULL’ on Sector B, an Event took place arranged by the FAST FUNDRAISING TEAM in order to raise funds for FAST. Brenda and Jean as per usual worked hard from start to finish, resulting in yet another successful evening! It was obvious at the time just how much was enjoyed by all there but the numerous phone calls and feedback they received for days afterwards confirmed it too! Carol and John, the owners of ‘THE BLACK BULL’ together with Ryan the Manager and staff, did a magnificent job, not only in making sure everyone was welcomed as they entered the well organized and prepared layout with named places at each table but also maintaining this service and attention throughout the evening too. Certainly a pleasant, well decorated venue
together with a friendly atmosphere. FAST wishes to thank everyone at ‘THE BLACK BULL’ for all their hard work and support constantly given. A Raffle was held, with some great prizes too-organised by Brenda and Jean. Thank you once again, Carol and John for your kind donation of a bottle of Scotch Port and also wine. Your generosity is very much appreciated. The free table ‘nibbles’ were also enjoyed! The entertainment was brilliant! We were extremely lucky to be able to enjoy the duo called ‘WILDCAT’. They are already well known by many people and once seen are definitely never forgotten! Their ‘Tribute Show’ which contained such a wide variety of great singing, including Amy Winehouse, Lady Gaga and Cher tributes plus so many more, together with the musical entertainment throughout the whole evening. You could not avoid getting caught up in the infectious atmosphere. Even those who weren’t dancing could not resist joining in, carrying out handjiving, tapping feet, linking arms, swaying etc. whilst still remaining seated! This Duo - Jackie and Jim certainly gave ‘their everything’! Superscot (Jim) will certainly never be forgotten following his performance of dancing and singing ‘Jimmy Shows Yir Target’ whilst circulating amongst the wide eyed audience! It seems that we now know the answer to the question: ‘What is worn under a Scotsman’s kilt?’! Fantastic evening, with a fantastic result: Total amount raised for FAST: €440 This money will continue to assist FAST with the costs involved in carrying out this Voluntary Service to Residents and Visitors on Camposol Thank you everyone for your continued support. braben’s blog...
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. It isn’t uncommon for me to be sat in a darkened room staring at the screen like some hooded Occultist staring into his dark crystal mirror, both trying to discern the future from the faint glimmering reflections on front of us. Like all Magi, I am looking to the future for wealth beyond avarice. To the digital world of BITCOINS. Ok! I will never be a novelist as creating provocative prose appears to be beyond my reach. I can, however, read and interpret the signs and portents of the digital future. Imagine a world where banks have no power! They can no longer control countries and economies with the wave of a chequebook. Imagine a world where money is truly digital, no more muggings (you don’t carry cash), no more safes to crack, no paying “on the spot” fines :-) What are BITCOINS? These are an innovative and, currently, experimental form of digital currency. As a new user, you can get started with Bitcoin without understanding the technical details. Once you have installed a Bitcoin wallet on your computer or mobile phone, it will generate your first Bitcoin address and you can create more whenever you need one. You can disclose your addresses to your friends so that they can pay you or vice versa. In fact, this is pretty similar to how email works, except that Bitcoin addresses should only be used once. All books have to balance (unless you are in charge of the government and little things
like that don’t matter). Bitcoins use a system called “Block Chain”. The block chain is a shared public ledger on which the entire Bitcoin network relies. All confirmed transactions are included in the block chain. This way, Bitcoin wallets can calculate their spendable balance and new transactions can be verified to be spending bitcoins that are actually owned by the spender. The integrity and the chronological order of the block chain are enforced with cryptography. As we have already covered this subject we should move on. A transaction is a transfer of value between Bitcoin wallets that gets included in the block chain. Bitcoin wallets keep a secret piece of data called a private key or seed, which is used to sign transactions, providing a mathematical proof that they have come from the owner of the wallet. The signature also prevents the transaction from being altered by anybody once it has been issued. All transactions are broadcast between users and usually begin to be confirmed by the network in the following 10 minutes, through a process called mining. On this note we will have to leave part 1 of digital commerce. Though it will be completed for you next week with a summary of how you can pay me for all this useful information ;-) So until next week have a great week, and remember that my clinic at Jack’s bar in Albox is closed for the next 2 weeks. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Then and now – The Crimea So 160 years later Crimea is back in the news; Russia under the pretext of an illegal coup in Ukraine that’s threatening the safety of Russian speaking peoples in Crimea sends 6000 soldiers to take over the Crimea. Russia also ‘leases’ a huge base from Ukraine at Sevastopol for its Black Sea Fleet which endangers matters further. Military planners have files on all scenarios so Russian success in invading the Crimea in just 3 days isn’t a coincidence. Never trust a politician is certainly apt here as long before Putin turned off the lights at Scochi, his planners and advisors would have been briefing him and working to his orders. In the 1850s; the Crimea was the scene of a war that pitted Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire against Russia with over 300,000 casualties. The war put the names of Mary Nightingale and Seacole into our history books. Tennyson’s poem The Charge of the Light Brigade immortalised the loss of almost half the British 700 cavalrymen in the Crimea in 1854. The 93rd Highlanders are remembered for holding their ‘Thin Red Line’ against a massively larger Russian force at the battle of Balaclava. Religion as ever was the excuse and catalyst for the 2.5 year war. Napoleon III of France believed Roman Catholic sites in the Holy Land (an area still under dispute as Israel/Palestine)
Bath Time!
I was lying in the bath last night thinking to myself, isn’t nature funny. Anyway, that’s another story but, as I was in there, I had an idea. I often get good ideas in the bath but that’s another story! I was thinking, isn’t it just as well we’re not all the same and all like the same things? Food for example; imagine if we all loved steak, there’d be mayhem at the Mercadona everyday as everyone lay siege to the meat counter-a little like the rush for the exit at a Justin Beiber concert. But thankfully, we do all like different things. I have to say though, some of the things that people do like are decidedly weird. For example, hidden away in a padded room somewhere there are still ageing remnants of the seventies wild child brigade who, even today, occasionally throw caution to the wind and play their Little Jimmy Osmond albums. But I was talking about food. I have to admit, I’m firmly in the, I don’t like shellfish, camp. Lobster. I know it’s a delicacy and that so many people enjoy it, but what I can’t get round is eating something that you need an instruction manual and a small lump hammer for. Then, if you get as far as finding your way in, what’s really off putting, well for me anyway, is that when you follow the instructions on how to dismember and then eat one, I was horrified to see them refer to the green stuff you may find inside. I may well be an unadventurous food wimp, and say what you will about McDonalds, you never have to dismember a chicken nugget, but I’m not too keen on letting something have free reign to my insides which contains squishy green stuff. Mushy peas are one thing but a Lobster’s liver is quite another! Of course, as I said, we’re all different; many people love seafood and especially Graham is married Sushi. The Japanese have brought the world to Helen and has a so much that is good and I am especially daughter, Alice. He partial to their home theatre systems, but lives part of the year as of yet I haven’t been persuaded by their near Albox, but works Sushi! in Qatar, teaching. If You’ll have to excuse me now because my you wish to contact bath water is getting cold and I still haven’t Graham regarding finished the re-enactment of the Battle of this article email: Jutland. should be under French and therefore Catholic control. Up until then they were administered by the Orthodox Church with its ties to the Ottoman and Russian Empires. In a case of gunboat diplomacy Napoleon bullied the Ottomans by sending his powerful warship called Charlemagne to the Black Sea. Realising this ship would easily pulverise both the Ottoman and Russian Navies the Sultan signed a new treaty and signed over control of the holy sites to France. Tsar Nicholas I stationed forces along the Danube and tried to get the Ottomans to see his version of sense; sending firstly the foreign minister then a senior diplomat called Prince Menshikov. Unfortunately the latter was less than diplomatic by committing the heinous crime of wearing a suit instead of military dress when he met the Sultan. Compounding things further the Prince insulted the Ottomans for accepting the French treaty and demanded certain ministers resign. Eerily reminiscent to today’s potential conflict, Russia sent 80,000 soldiers into Ottoman controlled Moldavia and Wallachia; under the pretext of protecting the Orthodox Christian population. The Ottomans declared war on Russia and tried to repel the invaders. Next Russia destroyed an Ottoman naval squadron and warned by the then Super Powers Britain
and France; to desist and leave the provinces it had invaded. Russia refused giving the British and French the excuse to declare war on Russia. Tsar Nicholas backed down withdrawing his forces but too late. The next few years of war may have been avoided but the allies’ demands for further concessions weren’t met. Back home the press were clamouring for a war to show the Russians what for. The Aberdeen Govt. had decided against continuing and lost a no confidence vote in Parliament and battle commenced. This was the first war where the public read about what was happening relatively quickly, telegraph meant that reports could be sent to newspapers in hours rather than weeks. The emergence of Europe’s railways meant men and equipment didn’t have to rely on slow sea crossings. Partly over British concerns over casualties; the war ended in March 1856 with The Treaty of Paris. Russians retreated giving the Ottomans back their lands. British and French success in capturing the strategic Black Sea port of Sevastopol was reversed and handed back to the Russians as long as they did not create a naval force there – that worked well then!!!

DOES A NON-RESIDENT HEIR PAY INHERITANCE TAX IN SPAIN ON FUNDS LEFT TO HIM IN JERSEY? Question: My deceased father (a resident in Mojacar) made a will leaving his worldwide assets to me (I am resident in London). The estate consists of a house in Mojacar and a bank account in Jersey worth 210000 pounds sterling. My Spanish solicitor is saying that I have to pay inheritance taxes on the account in Jersey because it was declared on my father´s 720 form (declaration of foreign assets) last year. I have read a book on the subject and my interpretation is that I should not pay inheritance tax in Spain on the funds in Jersey. What paperwork needs to be presented to the bank in Jersey for them to release the funds to me? The difference in inheritance tax between presenting the self-assessment forms in Spain including the funds in Jersey or not is over 59000 euro. AnSWER: I can confirm that because you are nonresident you do not have to pay inheritance tax in Spain in relation to the funds in Jersey. It does not need to be included on the self-assessment forms in Spain. You would have to pay if you where resident in Spain. Non-Resident heirs only pay inheritance tax in Spain on assets situated in Spain and on life insurance payments made by foreign insurance companies that operate in Spain. (This will become clear
to your solicitor on reading article 7 of the Law 29/1987 of 18th of December in relation to Inheritance and Donation tax) .The declaration of the asset on the 720 declaration makes no difference to this. B. Winding up the estate in Jersey is simple and straightforward. Your solicitor in Spain will need to gather some Spanish documents and choose a barrister to obtain probate at the “Jersey Royal Court”. This sounds complicated, but it is not. The procedure is not very expensive and takes two to three weeks if the solicitor in Spain presents the correct paperwork. In Jersey all you will need to pay is a small stamp duty to the “Jersey Royal Court “ (0.5% for the first 100000 pounds sterling and 75 pounds for every additional 10000 pounds sterling) and a Jersey barrister’s fee, which varies from my experience between 1000 and 5000 pounds depending on how much work he needs to do. UK proposes tougher rules for non-EU banks
The Bank of England has set out tougher proposals for non-EU banks to try to prevent a repeat of the 2008 financial crisis.
much more comfortable if branches from overseas are conducting wholesale business, that is things like trade finance.
Non-EU banks wanting to take deposits would have to set up subsidiaries in the UK and face stricter rules.
“We are much less comfortable if they are taking deposits from the retail market in the UK and that is born out of difficult experiences we had in the height of the crisis.”
These would then be directly regulated by the UK’s Prudential Regulatory Authority (PRA). Those not taking deposits from the public would be classified as branches, and benefit from lighter touch rules. The Bank is hoping many Chinese banks will use the branch system and that the City of London will become a major hub for trading the yuan currency outside China.
Britain had to compensate deposit holders in the UK when they lost money deposited in Iceland’s banking system, which collapsed in 2008 at the height of the financial crisis. The UK government is suing
Iceland to get the money back. Competition
Bank rules on branches would still mean they would have to have an equally strict home supervisor, and prove they could, in a crisis, be wound up quickly with minimum impact on the UK financial system. Mr Bailey said it would deter some banks from entering the UK market. “[It] does have an impact on competition in the UK banking s e c t o r,
because this impact has already happened: there has been a withdrawal of foreign banks offering retail banking services. “Now the conclusion that we drew from that was that the basis of doing that activity on the basis of branches was not sufficiently stable and not sufficiently well understood by the public. “We don’t think that is robust enough to offset any benefit that comes from competition.”

Over sixty members and friends of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion spent last Thursday morning as guests of the director, Colonel Emilio Gracia Cirugeda, on the occasion of their visit to the Academia General del Aire (AGA), and the Centro Universitario de la Defensa in San Javier. The visit was hosted by Cabo (Senior Airwoman) Rosa Iglesias Rodriguez who got the proceedings underway by showing a film, in English, explaining the history of the station together with its current facilities and resources. There followed a casual stroll though the base, alongside the military runway and the control tower, to the Engineering Squadron, where the visitors were left to explore in their own time. Aircraft available to pour, or lust over in some cases, included the Casa C-101EB Aviojet, Beechcraft T-34 Mentor, Hispano HA200 Saeta and the CASA T-35C Tamiz (ECH-51) and a couple of out of service Cessna 172’s. The San Javier Airbase was initially established in 1926 when it first accommodated the School of Naval Aviation, so from the very beginning, the barracks has been linked to the training and education of young pilots. It was in those early days that Naval Aerospace built most of the hangars and buildings in the base, little of which has changed over the years. After the Civil War, San Javier became part of the newly created Air Force. In this new era, the primary mission was once again the teaching of flight. This saw the establishment of the la Escuela Premilitar, the Air Training School, responsible for the training of pilots complement, with the first class of 400 students taking up their places in 1940. It became the General Air Academy by Royal decree three years later, since which time over 6,000 students have successfully passed through it’s gates achieving over 800,000 flying hours. The first woman student entered the academy in 1988 with the arrival of María Eva Lequerica de Jaén. Since then the proportion of female students has grown steadily, and today exceeds 10%. However in modern times the Academy is rather more than a school for pilot and flight training. Created by Royal Decree 1723/2008 UCD is an institution of higher education for future officers. It is also a learning centre for the Cartagena University where students are taught Industrial Engineering at the University Centre for Defence (UCD) in the Academy grounds. This new model of Military Education, which accommodates in the region of a hundred students, opened its doors in 2009. Successful candidates now pass out from the campus with a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Engineering. In recent years competition for entry into the academy has been especially keen with only 78 out of 2,500 candidates accepted for the air academy in 2012. The first three years of a student’s academic service consists of basic studies and introductory flight training. The fourth year is then devoted to the specialisation chosen with a fifth year, if necessary, for further concentration on that specialisation. In addition to Pilot and Engineering training the Academy is also responsible for providing general military training for the Quartermaster Corps of Engineers and the Air Force, technical training for entry to the Quartermaster Corps of the Air Force and general military training of Common Corps of the Armed Forces, when the Directorate General of Education and the Ministry of Defence Recruitment determine such needs. There is also a Language School, a Tactics and Weapons Systems Wing, Air Traffic Control and a Navigational Wings where those students who don’t quite achieve the standards required for phase 2 of pilot training are given the option of alternative training and Air Force careers. The General Air Academy is also the training center for pilots of the Spanish Air Force Acrobatic team, the Patrulla Águila (Eagle Patrol). Formed in 1985 the display team consists of 12 Spanish-built CASA C-101 Aviojet training jets, seven of which actually fly in airshows. They can regularly be seen flying over the skies of the Mar Menor in close formation as they practise their intricate manoeuvres. The pilots are all present or former instructors from the Air Force Academy. They have currently amassed over 25,000 flying hours and participated in more than three hundred civilian and military airshows and festivals. They are supported by a large team of technicians, mechanics and engineers. With the turn of the century the AGA is now the only official pilot training academy of the Air Force, to be fully able to meet the challenges posed by technological developments and changes in the global strategic landscape and with its 1500 staff and students, we must also remember just how important it is to the local economy. Following the visit to the Academy members of the RBL retired to the excellent Los Caracoles Restaurant in Pilar de la Horadada where they wined and dined into the late afternoon.

K AFTER YOUR PRING Top Tips For Buying An Overseas Property
Every year, thousands of overseas property buyers proceed with their purchases, oblivious to just how much impact the exchange rate is having on the cost of their dream home, according to a new report from currency and overseas property specialist, Smart Currency Exchange. As exchange rates fluctuate on a minute by-minute basis, these can dramatically affect the price of the property. If exchange rates change during the purchase process, the price could change significantly, even taking it beyond budget. David Comber, a trader at Smart Currency Exchange, has seen this problem time and again, particularly with fluctuating sterling rates affecting property purchases outside the UK. He shares his top five currency tips and ‘tricks of the trade’ for a smooth overseas property purchase: Understand the consequences of currency fluctuations For example, a couple set their heart on a €250,000 property in Spain. When they first looked at the property, the available exchange rate was £1/€1.1807. If they were to buy it there and then, it would cost £211,738. As often happens in the property market, unforeseen circumstances occurred, meaning that their plans were delayed. When they were next in a position to look at exchange rates, they were at £1/€1.1624. This meant that the house had gone up in price to £215,072. They decided to wait a while, in the hope that the rates might move in their favour, but unfortunately they went the other way, ending up at £1/€1.1290.
Know your budget before you travel This might seem like common sense, but it’s easy to get carried away in viewing overseas property. By having a clear budget from the outset, overseas buyers can ensure they get the most from their viewing trips and don’t waste time looking at properties that will be out of their price range. It also helps when looking at the exchange rates and deciding when and how to purchase. Make use of any added extras available, like prefunding an account for the purchase Experience has taught us that both the speed and timing of the process is an important – and in some cases critical – factor in securing an overseas property for the right amount. This is where another very useful ‘trick of the trade’ comes in – the ability to prefund a client account. This goes a long way to eliminating further difficulties that can arise when you are in a different country, such as limitations on how much can be transferred each day, language barriers, dealing with automated switchboards, authority limits, time differences, and so on. you act, the sooner you can get access to valuable market guidance and current exchange rates If you know that at some stage in the future you will have to transfer money abroad, and are considering using a currency specialist for the international transfers, it’s important to sign up for an account and get access to a trader’s guidance and the currently available rates as soon as possible. This helps with budgeting and allows the opportunity to use products such as a forward contract to set the price of the property.
For peace of mind, use a tool called a forward contract to fix the property price Not many people know about forward contracts and how they can be used to avoid losing money when purchasing overseas. Forward contracts help remove the risk involved in buying abroad by helping to lock in exchange rates at the point that you commit to buying a property. RBS Seeks Trust As Six-Year Losses Top £46bn
Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has announced plans to help restore customer trust after reporting its deepest annual losses since the year it was bailed out by the taxpayer.
be some years away.
The Business Secretary Vince Cable said of it: “I am pleased by the overall direction of travel of RBS, getting away from the disastrous obsession with scale and risky casino banking of the Fred Goodwin years, focusing instead on British customers and British business.
The loss for its last financial year of £8.2bn included previously-announced provisions for mistakes of the past, which continue to haunt RBS and the rest of the UK banking industry in the wake of the financial crisis.
“But British taxpayers are still paying for the terrible mistakes of the past and I see no sign yet of a turnaround in the continuing decline of net lending to small business.
It took the bank’s total losses, which are attributable to shareholders, to a staggering £46bn over the past six years. Ross McEwan, RBS chief executive, said the pre-tax loss for 2013 was “sobering” and “huge” and promised reform would turn around not only its financial fortunes but also its treatment of the customer following a number of high profile IT problems, misconduct fines and mis-selling. Its share price fell 4% when the FTSE 100 opened for business and later extended those losses beyond 8% in mid-morning trade, wiping almost £2bn off its value. The bank confirmed new cost savings of £5bn over the next four years reported earlier by Sky News - with its focus shifting back to the UK and further away from investment banking. It was its investment arm that
accounted for most of its bonus pool for 2013, which had shrunk by 15% to £576m, though the scene was set for further reductions in later years as RBS said it would concentrate on serving personal and business customers. The bank also announced it was lifting its proportion of UK assets to 80% of its business from 60% under pressure from the Government, which still holds a stake of over 80% in the lender, to concentrate on supporting the UK’s economic recovery. Mr McEwan said his revival plan would make the bank “smaller, simpler and smarter,” shrinking from seven divisions
to three. He has not put a figure on the potential number of job losses his plans would entail. The overhaul of its service and products for retail customers will see the Group outlaw different product rates for branch and online customers from mid-March. Among its other pledges were bans on teaser rates for any product and an end to 0% balance transfers for credit cards. The revival plan is designed to help get the bank into a position where it could return to private hands - likely to
“The public will simply not understand why big bonuses and large salaries continue to be paid out by a loss-making public enterprise, still underperforming in many areas. “The smaller bonus pool is due to the bank’s US-based investment banking operations, which will soon be sold. “If RBS is to become the sensible, boring bank envisaged by the CEO, the bonus culture will have to go.” Mr McEwan defended the bonus handouts, saying: “We need to keep people engaged in the job they do all day every day - from the high street to those in our markets business in the United States. “We need to pay these people fairly in the marketplace to do the job.” Source: http://web.orange.co.uk/

It’s an important means of communication for dogs. But sometimes problems can develop. As the pack leader, it’s your job to step in and control excessive barking. 1. Correct dog problem behavior and follow through. Tell your dog to stop barking using a look, a sound, or a physical correction. But don’t stop there. Your dog may pause and then go right back to what he was doing. His body relaxed, but his brain was still on alert. Be patient. Wait until your dog completely submits before you go back to what you were doing. 2. Stay calm when trying to stop dog barking. Constant barking can be irritating, but you won’t be able to correct the dog behavior problem if you are frustrated. Animals don’t follow unbalanced leaders. In fact, your dog will mirror your energy. If you’re frustrated, he will be, too! And barking is a great release for that frustrated energy. Take a moment to curb your own internal barking first. 3. Stake your claim to stop the barking. Is your dog barking over and over again at the same

object, person, situation, or place? Then you need to step up and claim that stimulus as your own. Use your body, your mind, and your calm-assertive energy to create an invisible wall that your dog is not allowed to cross. Do it with 100% dedication and focus, and the results may surprise you. 4. Stop the barking by challenging your dog mentally and physically. Excessive barking is often the result of pent-up energy. If this is the case, the solution is simple: release that energy in more productive ways. Does your dog receive a daily walk? Can you make the walk more challenging with a bicycle, a backpack, or by walking on an incline? Can you provide more mental challenges, such as herding, agility training, or simple obedience games? There are many, many ways to increase the challenges in your dog’s life. Find one that you enjoy that your dog can participate in safely. 5. Get professional help to stop dog barking. When you brought this dog into your life, you made a commitment to provide the care he needs. Prevent dog barking, and other dog behavior problems by calling in a canine professional to help him cope with a behavior issue.

EASY HORSE CARE CENTRE (EHCRC) ON STANDBY FOR MASS RESCUE The EHCRC in Rojales are currently working closely with other animal welfare agencies to rescue twenty horses from what has been described as “a living hell” in Callosa de Segura. The National Association for the Defence of Animals (ANDA) were alerted by British M.E.P. Arlene McArthy who herself has contacted the Animal Welfare Intergroup of the European Parliament.
Already El Refugio del Burrito, a major donkey rescue organisation based in Malaga has rescued nine donkeys from the premises. Two were in such a bad state they were euthanized on the spot and one other died two days later after arriving at the Malaga centre. A spokesperson for El Refugio del Burrito stated that “This is undoubtedly the largest rescue that we have been involved in since we started our rescue operations in Spain. We are working very closely with our partners Rod and Sue Weeding, Co - Founders of the EHCRC to get these horses out of this wretched place.” The premises at the centre of the controversy is owned by a dealer who buys and sells horses, donkeys
and mules. They are kept in the most appalling condition, tied and locked up 24 hours a day with limited access to food and water, literally starving. El Refugio del Burrito have already placed a criminal complaint against the owner of the place because of his continuing offences to existing Animal Welfare laws in Valencia, that is, continuous mistreatment and neglect of animals in his care. Despite all of this evidence, unbelievably, a court in Orihuela had deemed to find no signs of crime and the judge ordered the case to be filed. The dealer in question is alleged to be in violation of Law 4/1994 of July 8th of the Generalitat Valenciana on the Protection of Pets. He has also been repeatedly denounced for abuse and illegal transportation of animals. Reports from the Guardia Civil Seprona and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Generalitat Valenciana have called for the closure of the business and the immobilisation of the animals within. In the latest move regarding this case El Refugio del Burrito have contacted the EHCRC and advised them that
their specialist lawyer, who is an expert in these matters, has drawn up the necessary paperwork which is currently going through the courts now and they are hoping for a positive outcome. Sue Weeding, Co – Founder of the EHCRC adds,”We are currently monitoring the ongoing developments in this deplorable case and are in daily contact with our partners at Refugio del Burrito. As soon as we are advised that it is legally permissible to move in and rescue these horses we will, with help from the relevant authorities and our contacts who will be providing extra horse boxes and assistance. We will get these animals out and bring them here to the EHCRC where they will be examined by Dorothea, our vet, to assess their condition and provide the necessary treatment required to improve their state of health. This whole saga makes us so sad. It shows a lack of awareness on animal welfare still exists in some sectors of Spanish society. There is still much work to be done in this regard, nevertheless we must continue to work and create awareness and educate people, especially the younger generation that this behaviour is unacceptable in a modern society. Obviously these extra horses are going to place a huge strain on our resources both financially and space availability but we cannot just sit back and do nothing.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre would welcome any donations or horse sponsorship to assist in the upkeep of the 63 equines in their care and the extra animals when they arrive. If you are a bar owner or business that would like to hold a charity event to support the centre please get in touch
with Sue Weeding on 652 021 980 or email David East on pr@easyhorsecare. net The EHCRC will ensure that your event receives the maximum publicity in the press and on radio plus coverage on their Face book and website pages prior to, and after the event. Every single cent donated or spent in any one of the five charity shops operated by the EHCRC goes towards the upkeep and care of the horses, donkeys and ponies. If you have any furniture, white goods, clothes or metal for recycling to donate they will come and collect it from your home. Any large items such as furniture purchased in the shops can be delivered also. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 636 062 000. You can see where your money is spent by visiting the centre every Sunday between 1pm and 4pm where refreshments are available in the garden café. The first informative horse tour where you can get close to and meet the equine resident’s starts at 2pm. For more details on how to donate and for directions to the centre just outside Rojales Town Centre visit their website at www.easyhorsecare.net

book review
“We stood for a time, which was out of time, held as closely together as the hand of a father and his child.”
When you read Susan Hill you know exactly what you’re getting-a superb ghost story, atmospheric, full of terror and fear for the characters who are mysteriously involved in the occult. The truth unfolds slowly and the intrigue and suspense is expertly eked out before the final shocking revelations at the finale. The settings and actual places complement this remoteness and abandonment, a strong sense of isolation reminiscent of the great Hitchcock. And with Hill you can guarantee the expertise and fluidity of the style which makes for great reading. You just can’t go wrong, can you? Adam Snow is an antiquarian bookseller with extremely rich clients in the UK wanting rare book collections such as first folios with contacts in the States and Europe so he is constantly travelling. One time, as he is leaving a client and heading back to his home in London, he takes a few wrong turns and ends up at The White House and gardens. In its heyday it had been regarded as a national treasure, visited by royalty and foreigners from far afield. Now it was abandoned and decaying.

The Small Hand by Susan Hill. quietness, an unearthly silence, an inexplicable eeriness and what he simply experiences here, a young child holding his hand, will terrorise him for the remainder of his days. This is the place that becomes an obsession and he is hypnotically drawn to the place to discover the secret of the small hand. A stroke of luck enables him to purchase a First Folio of a works by Shakespeare for his wealthy client, Sir Edgar Merriman. Excitement all round. Discrete enquiries assure Adam that the edition is housed in a monastery in a remote area in France where the Resistance was active. A treacherous journey to Saint Matthieu des Etoiles, climbing high into mountainous regions with a storm raging, incessant rain, sulphurous looking skies and blue-white lightning. Some of the bends were coiled like snakes. Flashed indelibly on his mind was the image of a child dashing across the road during this storm. He braked hard thinking he had hit the child. When he got out of the car to see whether he had injured the child he found himself standing precariously on the edge of a precipice, almost losing his balance and falling to his death…. He suffers panic attacks and night horrors where he imagines himself being sucked lifeless under the water. When he is near water of any kind he feels a strong force, a tremendous terrifying strength which he finds irresistible. “It was like a magnetic pull. It was there
Give up smoking for good in less than two hours on No Smoking Day
March 12 is No Smoking Day. So if you are still hooked, now is the time to give up for good. Organised by the British Heart Foundation, No Smoking Day is the day that thousands vow to kick the habit, using any method they can – whether it is Nicotine patches, electronic cigarettes, willpower, chewing gum, inhalers or even prescription drugs. But quitting is not easy and many smokers will have tried some or all of these methods and still be addicted. Which is why Medcare GP practice in Benijofar is now offering the services of a hypnotherapist to help people stop smoking forever. And to mark No Smoking Day, the Medcare hypnotherapist, Angela Haram, is offering free consultations so you can find out if giving up with hypnotherapy is right for you. Says Angela: “If you really want to quit then hypnotherapy will work. By the time most people leave my hypnotherapy sessions even the thought of a cigarette makes them feel sick.” But the key is wanting to give up. “It won’t work if you are only doing it because you’ve been nagged into it by friends or family,” says Angela. In case you are not sure you want to give up, here are a few facts that might help you decide. Smoking is considered to be the biggest

cause of premature death in the UK and when you consider what is in your cigarettes that is hardly surprising. With every drag you will inhale acetone, a solvent found in nail polish remover; arsenic, a deadly poison; benzene, a solvent found in fuel; cadmium, a poisonous metal used in batteries; cyanide, a deadly poison; tar, a mix of chemicals including formaldehyde, arsenic and cyanide, plus many more deadly chemicals. And smoking can damage almost every part of your body, including lungs, brain, skin, bones and major organs. You will be at greater risk of developing many cancers, stroke, heart attack and osteoporosis. Your skin will age prematurely and lack of oxygen will leave you looking grey and unhealthy. But the good news is that as soon as you quit, the health benefits begin – no matter how long you have been smoking or how old you are. After 20 minutes, your heart rate and blood pressure return to normal. At eight hours nicotine and carbon monoxide start to leave your body and oxygen levels return to normal. By 24 hours, your lungs start to clear. At 48 hours nicotine has been eliminated from your body. As the weeks pass, your general fitness will improve and by three to nine months coughs and breathing problems clear as your lungs continue to heal. One year without smoking sees your risk of coronary heart disease drop to half that of a smoker. Stop damaging your body now and call Medcare on 966 860 258 or email doctors@ medcarespain.com to book your free consultation with Angela to find out if hypnotherapy will work for you. If you choose to go ahead, Angela is offering her smoking cessation hypnotherapy sessions for just €95 instead of €145 for a limited time.
when I slept and when I woke, it was there at the back of my mind all day and it was there even within my dreams.” The monastery visit represents Adam’s days of light before the darkness that plunges him into the depths of hell. He feels safe in this place of sanctity, protected by the prayers of the monks but he has to return to the real world and confront his demons. He contacts Hugo his brother when he returns to the UK and finds out about his brother’s panic attacks. Hugo suffered madness as a result of something disturbing in his youth and had two years of treatment before appearing to have been successfully cured. Adam is worried it is a genetic condition. “There is sometimes the shadow of a shadow. My psyche was turned inside out and shaken.” Adam’s discovery of a photograph with Hugo and a boy when they were children links them to The White House and its tragic history. What is this connection? And what is the connection between the statue of a young boy playing with a dolphin and a golden ball with James Harrow? Who was James Harrow and more importantly, what happened to him? It’s a long story but it will always haunt Adam: “My last carefree, guilt-free, blithe moment. Aren’t there always these moments just before the blow falls that
changes things forever?” And it did change things for ever. Tragically. The final confession wrecks Adam’s peace of mind for ever. The debt has finally been paid but Adam remains guardian of a grisly secret which he must take to his grave and never ever disclose to a living soul! Read it if you dare. Thai fish cakes with a honey and cucumber dip
Macaroons
There’s nothing scary about macaroons and they’re perfect as edible Ingredients presents. This easy-to-follow recipe shows you how to make them. For the fish cakes
To serve
Ingredients
Preparation method
125g/4oz ground almonds 200g/7oz icing sugar 3 free-range egg whites 2 tbsp caster sugar ½ tsp cream of tartar pinch red powdered food colouring For the chocolate filling 200g/7oz dark chocolate, chopped 200ml/7fl oz double cream 1 tsp brandy 15g/½oz unsalted butter
Preparation method
Blend the ground almonds and icing sugar in a food processor until well combined. Set aside. Using an electric whisk, slowly whisk the egg whites in a large bowl at a low speed until stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed. Slowly whisk in the cream of tartar and caster sugar until the mixture is smooth and glossy, increasing the speed of the whisk as the mixture stiffens. Gently fold in the food colouring and blended ground almonds and icing sugar until the mixture resembles shaving foam. Spoon the macaroon mixture into a piping bag fitted with a 1cm/½in round
nozzle. Pipe 5cm/2in circles onto the baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. If a peak forms, wet your finger and smooth it down. Sharply tap the bottom of the tray to release any air bubbles from the macaroons, then set aside for 60 minutes (the macaroon shells are ready to go in the oven when they are no longer sticky to the touch). Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 160C/315F/Gas 2½. Bake the macaroons in the oven for 1015 minutes, or until cooked through. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool for 5 minutes. Carefully peel away the greaseproof paper and set aside to cool completely. Meanwhile, for the chocolate filling, heat the double cream and chocolate in a saucepan over a low heat, stirring occasionally, until smooth and well combined. Add the brandy and butter and stir until smooth, then remove from the heat and set aside to cool completely. Use the filling to sandwich the macaroons together then chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

500g/1lb 2oz skinned and pin-boned halibut fillet, chopped 1 tbsp Thai fish sauce 1 dessertspoon Thai red curry paste 1 kaffir lime leaf, finely sliced 1 thumb-sized piece galangal, chopped finely 1 stick lemongrass (the soft bit only), finely sliced 1 coriander root and leaves, chopped 1 free-range egg 1 tsp grated palm sugar 50g/1¾oz snake beans, sliced thinly (alternatively use French beans) ½ lime, juice only plain flour, for dusting 3 tbsp groundnut oil, for shallow frying For the dip 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar 2 tbsp clear honey ½ lime, juice only 1 tbsp Thai fish sauce 100g/3½oz cucumber, skinned, cored and diced 50g/1¾oz carrot, finely diced 1 shallot, finely diced 2 birds’-eye chillies, seeds removed (if liked), sliced thinly
banana leaves lamb’s lettuce
For the fish cakes, place the fish, fish sauce, red curry paste, lime leaf, galangal, lemongrass, coriander root, egg, palm sugar, beans, and lime juice in a food processor and blend to a paste. Alternatively this can be done in a pestle and mortar – pound the ingredients to a jelly-like paste. Remove and, with damp hands, take a piece about the size of a walnut. Roll it into a ball and then flatten it to a thin disc. Lay on a floured plate. Repeat until all the mixture has been used. Refrigerate until ready to cook. For the dip, beat together the vinegar, honey, two tablespoons of water, the lime juice and fish sauce. Taste and adjust the honey and lime juice to get it sweeter or sourer, however you want it. Add the cucumber, carrot, shallot and chilli. Leave for 30 minutes to an hour for the flavours to develop. Heat the groundnut oil in a frying pan and cook the fish cakes until golden-brown all over – this should take a couple of minutes on either side. Serve on a banana leaf with the sauce in a dish to one side. Garnish with the lamb’s lettuce.

How to cook steak
ELVIRA’S
RESTAURANTE
Bring your steak to room temperature to ensure even cooking. Cut small slits across the line of fat on the side of the steak if it is very thick. This stops it buckling as it cooks. Drizzle some oil over the fat and meat. Sprinkle with salt and rub in. Season with pepper as well if you like. Place a griddle pan or heavy based frying pan over a high heat for at least five minutes. Hold the steak on the hot pan, standing it up on the fatty edge. Hold it there for 10-20 seconds until the fat begins to run onto the pan. Lay the steak on its side. Turn down the heat if your steak is very thick. On average, cook for two minutes on each side for a rare steak, three minutes for medium, and four minutes for well-done. However, the thickness of the steak will alter the cooking time. Pressing the steak down with a spatula will give a good brown crust. Once cooked to your liking, leave the steak to rest on a warm plate for five minutes, so the juices will settle evenly within the meat, while also allowing the meat to relax and become more tender.

JAGUARS - A Stunning Country Cruise Cava, Flamenco and an Opera Singer
Written by Eric Arnold The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain organised something special for their latest event held on the 2nd March 2014. A cruise through some stunning scenery to a fabulous restaurant in Rebate about 30 minutes from Torrevieja. Our Events Manager, Ian McMenemy excelled himself this time. The day started with most of the members congregating initially at a little restaurant in Los Montesinos called La Fortaleza at around 12:00 Hrs., just for some light refreshments and a chance to catch up with old friends. Just before 1:00pm the convoy of 23 fabulous Jaguars left the restaurant and snaked it’s way through orange and lemon groves then skirting the Embalsa De La Pedrera, a stunning turquoise lake, the scenery was just spectacular. The road followed the edges of the lake, across the dam and finally off again through beautiful country side to Rebate. Arriving at Restaurant Rebate was quite a surprise to most of us, what an
absolutely fantastic oasis of tranquillity. Beautiful gardens, ponds and terraces surround the restaurant. We were greeted with a table of deliciously crisp cava for all the members out in the garden - “that’s the way to do it”. The sun shining, a glass of cava in your hand and just stunning scenery, I can tell you, there are worst ways of spending your day. Just after 2:00pm we all got seated in the “Stone Room” and the feast began, and what a feast. A biscuit with goat’s cheese and red

fruits made to look like a Ladybird, followed by Vegetable soup, then a small but delightful salad with pine nuts and mustard and honey dressing, and it just kept coming, salmon mousse, ham croquette, sautéed mushrooms and we still have the main course to come, chicken, fish, pork, lamb or steak. Bursting at the gills, then a selection of desserts. Wine and coffee were included in the package - wait for it - all for 24.00 Euros - I can assure you the JEC Spain will be returning to Restaurant Rebate in the not too distant future. The surprises did not stop with the food, after our main course we were treated to a short aria from Ms Lydia Hernandez, a professional opera singer who was the companion of our good friend Chris Fox. This was followed by Flamenco dancers out on the terrace in the sunshine under the Mimosa trees. May I take this opportunity to thank all the members that attended especially the new members and the members that bought guests, bringing the total to 63 people and 23 cars. Anyone who appreciates Jaguars would have been in seventh heaven, we attracted some fantastic examples of this prestigious marque. Chris Fox with his XK120 and David Shea with his outstanding XJS Covertible to mention just a couple, even the “Guvnors” XK8 looked superb in this fabulous country setting. S Types, XJ’s, Sovereigns, XKR’s and even a new XJ graced the ranks - a great turnout, thank you guys. We even had two members join us all the way from Girona. I must also mention Mike &
Brenda Pike who brought along five of their friends. Another thank you to all the members who made donations to the club funds, we raised 139.00 Euros this time which helps Ian and I to keep things running smoothly. Satisfied and satiated, some members started to depart just after 5:00pm however some of us were still there at 6:00pm - what a great day. Our next meeting is planned for Sunday the 27th April, venue yet to be decided. Come and join us. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is the largest of the worlds Jaguar Clubs, apart from joining in the fun at the meetings, members also benefit from a glossy 132 page A4 monthly magazine, Jaguar spares department and a technical advice service second to none. If you live in Spain and own a Jaguar you should be a member of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. The JEC in Spain is organised by Eric Arnold and Ian McMenemy. Pheonix Solos was first formed in January 2001, aimed at those in the over 50 age group who, for whatever reason, found themselves on their own and wanting a better social life. That it is still running successfully after more than 13 years, is evidence that many people have been glad of the group. Based on a weekly social meeting every Monday morning from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm at the Marina Bar, on the water´s edge at the International Marina, Torrevieja, a wide variety of activities is organised. Sunday lunches at a modest cost are arranged most weeks, as is Ten Pin bowling. Past events have included special birthday parties, catamaran sailing, downhill cycling, coach trips, cruises and short holidays. Anyone interested is welcome to come along to one of our meetings and try us out. For further information please contact Janice 966 789 265, Alan 966 188 786 or Kitty 965 328 557. Thanks Janice Gray

50+ SOLOS
50+ SOLOS is open to Ladies and GENTLEMEN over the age of 50 years and on their own either through divorce or the loss of their partner. There are no subs or fees, just the cost of a meal and perhaps a little drink and a chat with like-minded people. We try to choose a different venue for each meal, normally the first and third Saturday of each month? At this moment we have only a couple of vacancies for ladies but several for gentlemen as some of ‘the regulars’ are away for various reasons so places must be held for them. Everyone is very friendly and we are quite a talkative lot at times. We hope to have a 10 pin bowling match in April against another group - nothing serious!! in May/June several want to go to Aguilas again for the day.. including a boat trip. YOU WILL NOT BE BORED. Come along and try us, no obligation. For general information or to make an enquiry about booking contact RUTH on 966 789 063 or ANNE 966 786 281

alqueria The HOWLING John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu
José Cabrasilbido listened intently to Manuela’s story. The girl was out of breath. She had run all the way from the banks of the Río Verde. It was two in the morning. The policeman was in no mood for sectarian tricks but Manuela was not prone to hysterics and she was certainly shaken. She was interrupted during some nocturnal activity of which she was vague but it appeared to involve two local lads and a tub of Remitroot degreasing gel. An unearthly howling ‘aymelaysheengang’ had echoed through the village. Manuela’s two companions had taken to their heels. They were last seen passing through Mojácar white faced, sweating and trouser-less. Now José, Alqueria’s local policeman is not the wisest of men. He had mastered joined-up writing but was still baffled by his car’s gear-lever. The Mayor had confiscated the bullets from his ‘glock’ after he accidentally shot the Inspector Jefe in the foot. At least it is assumed it was an accident. José was however tenacious and set about dragging the river. He feared the howling was the last desperate gasps of a drowning man or woman. The dragging turned up a stone plinth inscribed ‘Atlantis’, an earthenware amphorae containing the fleece of a winged ram, gold in colour and a suitcase with ‘Property of Lord Lucan’ etched across the handle. “Nothing of interest here” he muttered as he threw the items back. Finding no tangible cause he began looking for a more unworldly solution. The gallant policeman set about an all night vigil. A lonely watch over the village and its people. Settling himself in Manuela’s much used clearing, he waited and listened. Darkness fell and the bars emptied. Giggling couples and arguing youths made their way home. A fragile tranquillity fell upon Alqueria as it
prepared for slumber. Hours passed. José could feel those troublesome neck hairs start to rise. ‘Aymelaysheengang’ pierced the still night. The terrible wailing continued ‘weeepastfooorkupradstannning’. José plucked up whatever courage he could muster and headed in the direction of the lament. ‘It is human’ he thought ‘but either in great pain or greatly demented’. ‘Horweslotsoadsanassesallwlingaces’ it continued. Along the Calle Horne José walked. Not looking back, nor right, nor left but grimly straight on. The light from an open window attracted the policeman. He wondered what sights would greet him. What carnage must await discovery. Blythe Gruntmore the village’s resident Englishman, stood knee deep in empty Newcastle Brown Ale bottles, afloat on a sea of nostalgia. He pined for the Tyne and its fog shrouded banks. He raised his head and burst into song. “Ah me lads, ye shud only seen us gannin’, We pass’d the foaks upon the road just as they wor stannin’; Thor wes lots o’ lads an’ lasses there, all wi’ smiling faces, Gawn alang the Scotswood Road, to see the Blaydon Races.” José, not wanting the night to be a complete waste decided to pay Manuela a visit, he was sure he could find a suitable pretext.

A Crease in Time Saves Nine For anyone who has experienced tendonitis, they will know just how painful and frustrating it can be. Painful because it just is - and frustrating, because of the often very long healing time to get back to normal. I have suffered twice with tendonitis in the elbow commonly referred to as tennis elbow, or in my case, pints-of-Greene-KingIPA elbow - but that was a long time ago with thankfully no recurrence. So having suffered excruciating pain in her shoulder for a week or two, my gorgeous wife has just had the results of X-rays which reveal a case of this troublesome condition. Not life threatening, but with the shoulder being a far more complex joint than the elbow, it has become obvious how much distress this is causing when at intervals throughout the night, every little movement causes agonising pain and she emits a loud shriek. Our neighbours have started to give me knowing looks when I see them in the garden. So it’s a long healing process with strict orders from the doctor to rest the shoulder by keeping the arm in a sling for most of the day, making it extremely upsetting for her. Upsetting for me too, because to add to my regular duties in the kitchen and fifty percent shares in the housework department; I am now lumbered with the ironing, the other half of the dusting and mopping, all of the

driving – thus giving my liver time off for good behaviour when attending lunches out with friends - and other sundry chores. My paternal grandfather was a tailor and there was obviously something in the genes because my Dad would always press my trousers when I was a boy and make a fine job of it. I suspect however that this was only partially due to his inherited skill and largely as a result of my Mum’s disastrous attempt to press my very first pair of long school pants. It’s a painful memory for me because what happened was that instead of ironing my trousers giving a sharp crease front and back; what she actually did was apply the creases along the inside and outside seams. Thus I had to appear in school that day looking like a cardboard cut-out, much to my embarrassment and the obvious amusement of fellow pupils and teachers alike. Just what a lasting impression this made, was brought home to me in recent times when I re-connected with a school chum through the wonders of the internet and his first words emailed to me were: “Haha, yes I remember you - it’s the ginger bread man!” As for my new role as chief ironer, just like my Dad, I shall continue to press my chinos, jeans and slacks to within an inch of their lives as I always have done . . . it’s all the other stuff that is proving to be irksome. I thought I had made a pretty good job of my shirts this week and was quite hurt when my wife inspected them with a barely audible tut tutting noise. “What’s wrong?” I queried, ‘I’ve ironed all the creases out haven’t I?” “Yes”, she said, “but you’ve transfered them to other places.” “It’s my new rumpled look.” I told her sulkily,
then grudgingly started to re-iron the whole lot again. So there we are, I am for the foreseeable future destined to wear the apron and Marigolds in my new role as house husband, but there is one job that I loathe, not because it’s difficult or time consuming, but because according to my wife I never do properly. Hanging washing.

the
Yes, yes I know, it sounds like a piece of cake, but however I arrange it all, or whatever way up I suspend the shirts, sheets or socks and in what order; my wife tells me it is wrong. If she is out while I undertake this task, I will take odds of five hundred to one, that no matter what, she will return home only to rearrange the whole damn lot. If I hang my grape smugglers by the legs, it looks silly she tells me, but then on another occasion if I hang them by the elasticated waistband, then that’s wrong too because the elastic takes longer to dry she maintains. I have exhausted every combination possible for every conceivable article of clothing and household linen over the years, but it’s never to her satisfaction. Whatever I am told on a Monday has by Friday become outdated although the light of my life will maintain vehemently that she never told me to do it Monday’s way in the first place. There is only one thing for it. I have this very bad pain in my shoulder.

Commiserations to David, whose team was, pipped at the post, yet again, by the team including his nemesis, Morag. Better luck next time David.
Eurogolf, La Marquesa 65 players took part in our Team Game today which was a Texas Scramble at our home course of La Marquesa, on Thursday 27 February. All players must have at least 4 drives, maximum 5 per person. The most appropriate drive is selected by the team captain then all players in the team play the next shot from that position. Fairly straightforward until it gets nearer the last few holes when hopefully the number
of drives taken has balanced out without leaving 1 player with several drives still to take. There was some wind today, with the sun appearing and disappearing on a regular basis, making the taking off and on of sweaters somewhat repetitive. One lucky lady had a good day picking up share of first place, a nearest the pin and a football sweep. About time her husband started to contribute to the winnings pot methinks.

Fun and power
Two words that, for me, best describe the Honda CR-V. Fun because this all wheel drive vehicle can tackle most terrains while the 150bhp 2.2 litre diesel unit has enough oomph to travel from 0 to 60mph in a little over 10 seconds. I’m testing the top-of-the-range £33,000 plus 2.2-litre four wheel drive version. As I look down the side panels I’m instantly struck by how this fourth generation model reminds me of the BMW X5. It looks grander, more striking and capable than its predecessors. I like the polished metal finish. Eldest daughter
Harriett likes the way water jets clean the headlights at the push of a button. In fact this sports utility vehicle (SUV) is fitted with a number of luxury features including the power tailgate that makes light work of closing the boot, extremely easy to fold rear seats and a panoramic glass roof, all of which you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. My test takes in Dorset, Hampshire and Oxford. A selection of artists have opened their studios and so it is an ideal opportunity to go and visit them.

Our Full Monte Prize in support of our Associates
Lo Marabu Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at La Manga West on 27th February 2014. For this month’s meeting a group of 36 players visited the established course at La Manga West taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. For those that have not played this course before it is the lesser known of the La Manga Resort courses but is a wonderful test of strategy and ball positioning on fairways and well worth a game Many of our players ‘came a cropper’ off the tee with good shots finishing in trouble because of lack of course knowledge and this reflected in the scores on the day although we did have one excellent score of 38 points. Unfortunately the day was disrupted when one of our guests was hit on the hand by a golf ball needing hospital treatment which ultimately was only bruising and nothing more severe. However having purchased the ‘daily licence’ before we played the ‘scribe’ had to leave the course after only 5 holes to handle the insurance documentation which is a story for another day and
the basis of yet another golf article on the subject. Anyway the winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Malcolm Wright – 29 points 2nd – Bill Jamieson - 27 points 3rd – Dave Belcher – 25 points Best Guest – Roger Bennett – 38 points Best Front 9 – John Laidler – 16 points Best Back 9 – Rod Allen – 13 points Nearest the Pins – Malcolm Wright (2), Mike Probert, Dave Marriott and Ray Parker Dog of a Day Trophy – Mike Probert After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation. Our next fixture is the friendly match vs. the SHIP GS at Font del Llop on Monday 10th March 2014 followed by the monthly meeting at La Torre on 27th March 2014. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costablanca-greenfees.com.
The Full Monte, supporters club of CD Montesinos and to-day sponsored by Rob Marchant went to Syd Avery.
Our fixture list for March and all year may be seen on our web site www. torregolf.eu and if you would like to join us then give David Winder a call on 626 774 157
Well done to all the winners and some may be seen in our photograph.
Interestingly the route is pretty much a straight run from Oxford down to Dorset and we are able to take in an average of three studios a day, racking up just over 500 miles and returning at best 39.7mpg at a constant 56mph. As temperatures drop to minus figures in the winter months it is reassuring to be driving a vehicle that is fitted with permanent four wheel drive, especially when visiting the remote parts of the country that our trip takes us to. In fact on a number of occasions we find ourselves parking in farmers’ fields to visit the studios and the CR-V makes extremely light work of such requests. Hill descent is a useful feature too enhancing its capabilities when tackling such scenarios. The black leather interior is comfortable and the power front seats are easy to operate, although the driver’s seat does seem to remember a different position on locking the vehicle. This is no doubt down to me not setting my desired position on the memory function. Similarly my wife and I find the radio frustrating because it refuses to play our favourite station, bypassing it at every request. The automatic gearbox is smooth. The centre armrests front and back together with the blacked out rear windows add to the hint of luxury. Parkers, the car experts, say: “The
British-built Honda CR-V is now in its fourth generation. The five-seat SUV has been in production since 1995 and has proven incredibly popular for the Japanese manufacturer. Indeed, five million CR-Vs have gone to happy homes around the world. Its blend of practicality, reliability and efficiency has stood it in good stead, but competition from the likes of Mazda’s CX-5, Nissan’s X-Trail and even BMW’s X3 means Honda really has to be on its toes to retain its share of the market.”

SPORTSMAN GOLF SOCIETY, QUESADA
@ Font Del Llop Golf Wednesday 26th February 2014 23 players turned out for our outing at the fantastic Font Del Llop Golf Resort, with one cancellation the day before. It started a little cloudy and a brisk wind whipping through the valleys. Warm clothing was the order of the day. The sun made a small appearance which raised the temperature a little. The course was in good condition for the time of year and the continuing work is improving the layout all the time. It proved to be somewhat of a test on some holes due to the wind strength & direction. Both myself and Mr Stirfry are still recovering from surgery so yet again sat this one out (Suppose it gave other players a chance to win !!!!!) Vanessa kindly gave us a buggy so we could view some of the golf, I have to say we almost witnessed an ace from Spanish John, whom walked away with the €23 2’s sweep, even though he received some barracking from us over his 1 foot putt (trying to put him off). Two players managed 34 points with John Fullicks winning on the Lowest handicap rule. The usual individual bets took place adding a little extra pressure on those players and at times creating shanks, fat shots & balls hit out of bounds
(Willie Buchanan & David Gray!!!). Thanks to the kind donations of prizes yet again we covered 5 par 3’s NTP, 2’s sweep, 1st & 2nd Place and the best front & back 9. A big thank you to Ron and Yolanda at the Sportsman for cooking a greatly appreciated heart warming feast after the game not forgetting the Nearest the Pin prizes. Our thanks go to prize donations also from Alec Aspden, John Sanchez, Jake the Barber, Quesada Bowling Club and Marco Polo Cleaners. Winners of the Day : Winner : John Fulicks 34 points (Lower Handicap) Runner-up : Alec Aspden 34 points Nearest the Pins : 3rd John Fullicks, 8th Norman Potter, 12th John Sanchez (2’s sweep winner),, 16th John Devine, 17th Willie Buchanan Front 9 : Willie Buchanan 15 points (Lowest Handicap) Back 9 : David Gray 20 points, 2’s Sweep : John Sanchez €23 Football Card : Peter Brown Thanks all for a great day, next outing Wednesday 26th March @ Alenda Golf, €38.50 Green Fee & Buggy. Quesada Golf Society Last Wednesday, the Society played an Individual Stableford competition at Alicante for the Alex Starkey Memorial Trophy. Alex, who sadly passed away a few years ago, was one of the founder members of the Society and Alicante was his favourite course. The course was in decent condition and the weather was fine although there was a bit of a breeze which swirled around. The majority of the tee positions were well set back and the pin positions, were in the main, tricky which may have contributed to the generally low scores returned on the day. The winner and runner-up were seasoned veterans who came from the Gold Division. These were the winner of the Trophy “Big” John Dunnion with 31 points, who just pipped “Iron” Brian Smith by a point. The point which made the difference may have come from a lucky break John got from a “bouncing bomb” or golf ball which skimmed the lake and came out to rest on the green stuff. In third place in the Gold Division was “Young” Roy Westlake with a hard earned 26 points. In the Silver Division in 1st place was Terry Smith with 24 points. In 2nd place was new member Angela Carroll on 23 points and in
3rd place Brian Airey on 20 points. The best Guest with 24 points was David Hayward. The Nearest the Pin winners were Roy Westlake and Tony Patterson with Pam Martin winning the “Ladies” only Nearest the Pin, which was kindly sponsored by “Mirror Image” Unisex Hairdressers in Quesada. The player who played the most shots and lost the most balls in the water and claimed the much coveted “Roy” Trophy until the next game was Mick “The Magician” Rowan whose magic didn’t work on the day. The “Charity” scratchcard winner was “Diddy” Dave Winchcombe. The presentations were made at the Societies base, the Quesada Country Club after the game. A tasty hot & cold buffet was provided by Dave and Anita for which the Society is as always very grateful. The next members meeting at the Quesada Country Club is on Tuesday 4 March and the next game is at Altorreal on Wednesday 12 March. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
Tuesday Night Trios - Ten Pin Bowling League Week Twenty-One played 25th February 2014 There was nothing to choose between Crazy Pinz and Caballo Negro and, with Eva-Ritta Manninen of CP bowling her seasons highest handicap series of 660, the points were shared 4 – 4. Splash took on Cornish Pride, hoping to keep up their recent good form. Shane Winfield of CP had other ideas, but his 604 scratch series wasn’t enough to stop Splash taking the game 6 – 2. Maurice Allen of Los Bandidos bowled his highest scratch game of
225, which helped LB to take a 6 – 2 win over a very out of sorts Juans’ Warriors. Bar Mosquitos “we’re only here for the beer” had an entertaining match against Los Lobos and, after a lot of banter, it was LB that took the overall pinfall by only 4 pins, to come out 6 – 2 winners on the night. Game of the night saw league leaders Team Finland take on second placed Hall y Day. After an uneventual first game won by HyD, TF came roaring back with Jukka Koskinen scoring the high game of the night of 248 and the high series 625. TF took the 2nd and
37
3rd games to force a 4 – 4 draw, thus keeping HyD 4 points behind them, in the race for the league title. The Mixers took on the leagues bottom team The Dreamers and, were hoping to get back to winning ways but, with the Don Galley of TD bowling his seasons best handicap game and series of 234 and 646, TD achieved their highest team total of 1793 and so came out 6 – 2 winners. Dons wife Betty took the ladies high game handicap on the night with a 243 and Inga-Lill Soderstrom of TM took the ladies scratch series on the night of 581 but,
this wasn’t enough to rescue her team. Split Happens bounced back from their unexpected loss last week, with an 8 – 0 demolition of Lucky strike. Although Sue Duke of LS tried her hardest, it was Marion Haynes of SH, with a 209 scratch game, who took the ladies weekly honour. Next week will see the semi finals of the Cornish Pride Cup, sponsored by Shane and Sue winfield of CP Los Dolses, where Crazy Pinz will play Splash and Caballo Negro take on Split Happens.
SMGS at LA FINCA. A very busy final game of February saw nearly half the field of 36 also taking part in their knockout matchplay games alongside the day’s Stableford competition. With the first tee times getting on for noon, it certainly looked as though we were going to be blessed with a warm, pleasant day. How wrong you can be! By the time we reached the exposed 11th the wind had turned distinctly chilly and was whipping across the course. Previously discarded sweaters and wind-breaks were hurriedly put back on as the temperature plummeted. The society’s healthy finances saw the regular introduction of a few extra prizes – NTP in 3 shots on three of the par 4’s, one for each division. These were won by Theo Boelhouwer (Hole 7), Roger Webb (Hole 10) and Mike Jordan (Hole 12). The four par 3 NTP’s were claimed by Steve Fleet (Hole 3), John Drakesmith (Hole 6), Glen Rapley (Hole 13) and Andy Irmie (Hole 16). Karen Simpson took the visitor’s prize with a very commendable 32 points. In the singles matchplay games Phil Birtwistle beat John Aitchison by just the one hole, Keith Stevenson got the better of Shay Cunningham 4 & 3, Mick Roscoe eliminated Les Wilton 5 & 4 and the first “dog license” victory we’ve seen, that’s 7 & 6, goes to John Parker who had the game of his life against the jovial Scotsman, Alan MacDonald. The two doubles games saw “Ken & Barbie” (Ken Flaherty & Phil de
Lacy) beat “The Geordie Boys” (John Drakesmith & Ken Potts) 1 up while “Towie” (Steve Davis & Steve Fleet) knocked out “Gooner & Goner” (Barry Roehrig & Glen Rapley) 3 & 2. The top four in the bronze division of the Stableford competition were Keith Stevenson in 4th with 30 pts, Mick Roscoe in 3rd with 35 pts, Mike Jordan in 2nd with 38 pts and winning 1st prize AND a big handicap cut was John Parker with an “obscene” 43 points! Ken Potts was 4th in the silver division with 32 pts, 3rd was Roger Webb (33 C/B), 2nd was Chris Hamblett (33 C/B) and top spot was claimed by Ken Flaherty with 35 points. Gold category saw Barry Roehrig just edge Ivan Hanak out of the prizes with a count-back on their 33’s, 3rd went to Paul Guest (36), 2nd place was Andy Imrie with 37 and once again the consistent play from Steve Fleet earns him another first place, along with a wee cut for his 39 points. Well done to one and all !! Please log on to www. smgs.org to find all society news or simply give Baz a quick buzz on 966 731 033 and he’ll do what he can to help….. visitors are always welcome to join us if we can accommodate you. Wednesday meetings in March are at Villamartin, El Plantio, Mar Menor and La Finca. Photo: Some of the day’s happy winners.

JUNIORS DO ITV ORIHUELA RFC PROUD
ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY
At the weekend the cadetes and juveniles players from ITV Orihuela RFC were playing away for the Murcia region against Almeria. While the first team played Cartagena in the league away on Sunday. The cadetes kicked off first with seven Orihuela RFC players in the team including Javier who was the captain, together with Gregory, Jose, Joel, Paolo, Juanma and Jorge. All of the players had a great game as well as the team who played together very well with the forwards and backs working well together in full support of each other. The Murcia team got of to a great start with two quick tries by Jose and Gregory from Orihuela RFC to give them a great foundation to work on, and putting the home side under constant pressure, going in at half time 18-0 up. They came out for the second half determined to put the game to bed, but the Almeria side showed great endeavour to get something from the game, but it was the Murcia cadetes that got the score board rolling again with two more tries and a conversion and one of the tries from Joel. All credit to Almeria they managed to get a consolation towards the end of the game and they never gave up and all credit must go to them for that. The final score been 30-5. Next up was the Juveniles, which another ITV Orihuela RFC player was the captain, Tirso and another player Sergio also playing for them. This was a far tighter game than the other one with both teams exchanging tries and the lead in a very topsy turvy game which was great for the supporters, but so much for the coaches, The final score was 32-26 to Almeria. Congratulations must go to all of the players from
both sets of teams for a great days rugby and specially to the ITV Orihuela RFC players who got into the team, and the credit for that goes to Pedro who works tirelessly with the players, and without him the players would not be playing for the region. Last but not least a very short note on Sundays game for the first team against Cartagena who ran amoke winning 49-0. Cartagena got the try bonus point in the first half and Orihuela RFC struggled to get their hands on the ball at all during the first half and faired little better in the second one, unfortunately. The above information was sent to me by the club. The next game is away to San Javier for the B team on 8 March. Also the cadetes and juveniles play this weekend away to Tudela, so good luck to them all. I am now at Zoco Market on Sundays third row up from the road at the back of the market, so come on down there for all of your rugby branded clothing and anything you want to know about rugby in the area. Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. If you would like more information about what is going on in the club, you can contact the club by phoning myself, Garry on 692 767 242, and for the juniors contact Oscar on 600 871 606 (Spanish)

Villamartin 26th February 31 golfers turned for our weekly outing which this week was at Villamartin We arrived with the promise of good weather and good conditions neither of which disappointed us.
