News Benidorm residents donate over 200kg of food to Cruz Roja

Specsavers Opticas in Benidorm collected over 200kg of food for the Cruz Roja during their week-long food collection campaign and were delighted with the generosity of local residents.

The food collected has been delivered to the Cruz Roja Benidorm’s food bank and donated to needy families at risk of social exclusion. This food bank helps between 80-100 people per week and has been required to respond to demand more than doubling due to the crisis.

The Head of the Food Collection Programme, Mara Martinez Olivan, explains why donations are so important, “There are so many people at risk of social exclusion and we are working on a very limited budget, therefore even

There is no charge for this service.

Presentation Time at YoYo’s

On Saturday 7 June Daya Nueva CF held their end of season celebration.

Restaurant YoYo’s was once again the venue and as before the food was excellent with plenty to eat (and of course drink). The entire team along with parents and other family members made up a fifty strong group.

Unfortunately this year there was no League Trophy to celebrate winning.

However this did not stop everyone from enjoying the celebrations and the eighth place finish by the boys in a thirteen team division was commendable. Next season will see the team benefit from this first year of three that they play at this level. Once again Brian Jerrett and Dave Fenner (Daya Dave), the two longest standing ex-pat supporters awarded trophies. These were presented for the most goals scored (Luis) and seasons’s outstanding player (Danni).

There were also presentations made by the parents and players to Head Coach, Paco, and his Assistant, Vincent in recognition of all they do throughout the year.

Each player received a monogrammed towel as a thank you for all the effort they put in this season at training as well as the matches played. Many thanks go to everyone

at the football club who have again made myself, Brian and our wives very welcome within their club and Daya Nueva itself.

JJ’s Puppy Rescue Association

As a Registered Charity we rescue puppies abandoned in the Mazarron area and care for them in foster homes where they can be trained and socialised whilst we are finding them a loving forever home locally or abroad.

June was a busy month for us working with ‘Helping The Perrera Dogs’ a small group of local animal lovers and experienced rescuers concerned about the plight of unwanted, abused and abandoned puppies and dogs, working closely with Natural Planet Residencia Canina at Mazarron to find new homes for some of the dogs.

As a Registered Charity we have been able to help by rescuing 38 puppies and dogs from the Perrera, 8 have been adopted locally, 1 is going to the UK for adoption, 7 have travelled to Germany for adoption and 18 are being cared for in foster homes and boarding kennels awaiting travel too Germany for adoption by new owners.

To help us raise the funds needed for our work we are dependent on public support and generosity. We have a Charity Shop in Puerto de Mazarron

staffed entirely by volunteers and we really need all the public help we can get. Any unwanted saleable items will be gratefully received. If you would like to be a volunteer helper and can give some free time to work in our Charity Shop come in and have a chat with the staff. We also have a table top stall selling cakes and pastries to raise funds at Sara Lara’s Bar Puerto de Mazarron on Saturday 19 July from 1100 to 1400.

The inspiration and satisfaction of our work does not come from telling the World ‘What We Have Done’’ it comes from ‘Actually Doing What We Do’ rescuing abandoned, abused and unwanted puppies and dogs and being able to share in the knowledge of the unconditional love that they give to their new caring owners in their new homes.

Ancient Grease is The Word

Stagestruck’s performance of Ancient Grease played to packed houses on May 29th,30th and 31st.

As always with their productions the acting, singing and dancing was very well done and much appreciated by the enthusiastic audiences, who were dancing in the aisles and remembering the handjive .

As Stagestruck productions are funded by the many Murder Mystery Nights they perform at Venues all over The Costa Blanca, all monies raised at Theatres goes straight to Charity.

Over the three shows a fabuloustotal of 3500 euros was raised by ticket sales, raffle and donations. This money has been donated to The Alzheimers Association

and to Books for Children in San Fulgencio.

The next production will be “ The Panto Pensioners Save Christmas” which will take place in late November.

The Great Kon-Tika Raft Race Organised by SAN ANIMAL

San Animal did an amazing job of organising the Kon-Tiki raft race on Sunday on the beach at San Juan de Los Tererros… on Sunday the 15th of June. Hundreds of spectators turned out to see 14 rafts race… The rafts were fantastic and included entrants from local schools, organisations even the town hall took part. The atmosphere was electric and there was a real party atmosphere helped enourmosly by The TEAM HARMONY ANGELS who entertained the crowds with their superb cheerleading singing and chanting their theme song. The Angels also organised a bucket collection from the crowd and raised almost a €100.

Well done Angels Elaine the secretary of San Animal said that they were thrilled not only with the amount of entrants but the rafts were superb, everyone really got into the spirit of the day. Elaine said that although the total amount has yet to be finalised they were expecting to have raised near to €1000 which for this charity is an amazing amount of money much needed in the rescue and re-homing of dogs and cats.

Money for Daily Food

On Monday 16th Bernard June, Ash and Janneke from Chambers HELP Murcia Mar Menor, presented a cheque for €2000 to the Vice President of A.F.E.M.A.R., Snr. Jose Luis Martinez, in San Pedro. This money will be spent largely on essentials such as daily food.

Because of the very limited funding they can only cater for 10 full time adults and 18 outpatients. However they have still managed to create a caring and happy atmosphere for those in the centre. are provided services The psychotherapy, workshops, music, art, IT training and much more. One client gained 3rd prize in a national art competition held in Madrid - a great success story.

Holidaymakers warned to watch out for highway robbers in Spain

The British Embassy in Spain is warning holidaymakers to watch out for ruthless gangs of modern-day highway robbers who are preying on people driving foreign-registered vehicles and hire cars.

Police in the Catalonia region of Spain have dealt with 126 British victims of robbery on the AP7 motorway between the French border and the Valencia region over the past two years.

British Consulates across mainland Spain say they are receiving regular reports of roadside robbery occurring along the coast between Barcelona and Alicante, across Andalucia in the south, and in the Madrid region. Consular staff estimate that 1 in 20 of all emergency passports issued last year as a result of theft were following motorway robberies.

A new video produced by the Foreign Office - ‘Don’t let thieves drive you to distraction’ - shows real-life footage of some of the most common tactics.

Highway robbers flag their victim down by indicating there is a problem with their vehicle, then one gets out to distract the occupants’ attention, whilst an unseen accomplice robs passports, money and other valuables before the gang makes a fast getaway.

In a second case, the robber tricks a victim into thinking they have a problem with their parked vehicle, whilst another opens the door and removes valuables. Other tricks include throwing something that creates a sudden noise, or puncturing a tyre at a roadside rest

stop.

Will Middleton, consular director for Spain, warns:

‘Distraction is the most common technique used by highway robbers in Spain. They will try to worry you about the state of your vehicle, and then whilst they point out the supposed problem, an accomplice is robbing you.

‘So be wary of anyone attempting to stop you when you are driving, or trying to point out a problem or offering assistance. They may not be the good Samaritan they appear to be.

‘If someone points out a supposed problem whilst you are on the road, keep going until you reach a service area. If you have to stop, make sure one person stays in the vehicle. Keep valuables out of sight and out of reach.

If you do notice a problem with your vehicle, call your emergency breakdown service for help.

‘We are working with the Spanish police to alert British visitors to how these gangs work, so that holidaymakers can avoid becoming victims. Police statistics indicate that these robberies are largely non-violent.

‘However falling victim to this kind of theft can be distressing and costly: a family of four who lose all their passports would unfortunately need to pay around four hundred pounds to get emergency passports to get home.’

The tenth Medieval Market in La Nucia 8th, 9th and 10th July

La Nucia, a really pleasant village just a few km from Benidorm and well-known for its big flea market on Sunday mornings, held its first Medieval Market in 2005 to celebrate its 300 years of existence, and enjoyed it so much that it decided to have a Market every year. This year it will be the tenth time and there will be a varied programme with troubadours, a juggler on stilts who also plays with fire, lies on a bed of really sharp nails

and manages to get both feet tucked behind her head; a story teller, street theatre, medieval table games and a merry-go-round for the children.

That all takes place next to and in between some 70 craft stalls, carefully selected by Amata, the organizing craft association, so that nothing is imported, nothing is made in craft factories - in fact, everything is made by the people on the stall and there is a wide range of different products. Something for everyone - if not for the visitor in person, then perhaps for a friend or relative. La Nucia Medieval Market (about 10 km from Benidorm) gets going about 6 in the late afternoon and keeps going till midnight or so; the stalls are set up in the narrow streets to the back of

the Town Hall. If you don’t know the way, just follow the white-on-green arrows with “Mercado Medieval”.

A HELPING HAND FROM ‘SMILE’

The folks of ‘Smile Charity Group’ have been very busy, raising funds for various local charities, through their monthly fund-raising nights, at ‘El Alto La Dolores Restaurant’, and their own performances of the short play ‘Skool Blazers’ – ‘Flaming St Trinian’s’.

Over the last two weeks alone, they have donated 586€ to The Benijofar Crisis Appeal; 815€ to Reach Out, Torrevieja, and a small

donation of 100€ to AECC. On 19th June they will be raising money for the Alzheimers Association, and on 23rd July for TSS (Torrevieja Stroke Support).

In September they will be doing another short run of ‘Skool Blazers’.

Since they were formed, just 11 months ago, this hard-working group, have raised in excess of 6,500€ for charity. An achievement to be proud of.

News World Cup Rental Demand An Example To Second Homeowners

Citi believes house prices will fall by further 5% to 10%

financial benefits that hosting the World Cup will bring to Brazil,

Analysts at the Citigroup Research Service estimate that housing prices in Spain could still fall by an additional 5% to 10%, pointing to at least another year of declines before prices reach their minimum levels, and at the same time they rule out activity in the sector recovering in “the near future”.

The organisation said in a report that, although the latest supply and demand data for housing in Spain shows “uncertain” signs of stabilisation, a major adjustment of housing prices still lies ahead.

In this regard, they stressed that, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the price of housing in relation to incomes, or rentals, are still between 6% and 10% above the long-term average.

Citi added that in other periods of adjustment of housing prices following housing bubbles, as has been the case in the United States and Ireland, these ratios have fallen between 15% and 20% compared to their

historical averages.

They also stressed that, as noted by the Bank of Spain, accessibility to housing has worsened “significantly” since the Government eliminated the tax deductions for home purchases, and that the potential demand is “much lower” than before the crisis, due to the population decline in Spain.

Citi’s analysts recognise that the “modest improvement” recorded in housing demand in recent months is likely to lead to a slowdown in the pace of decline in housing prices. However, with the still large stock of unsold homes (estimated total of around 600,000), they indicated that an increase in prices and activity “is not expected in the near future”.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Some time back I bought a tower computer without an operating system.

The design specifications were: It had to be fast (I edit video files and it is notoriously slow when re-recreating the file), it had to have a respectable amount of memory (in this case 8Gb) for the very same reason, A large hard drive is essential when storing and manipulating massive video files so I invested in 2! The first is a standard 1Tb (1000 Gb) hard drive and the second is a 128Gb SSD. So why 2? The standard HDD is stable technology based on an old design and is relatively slow. Why is it slow? It simply has many moving parts that are tiny and to give an example of how minute, the height of a fingerprint is 8 time greater than the distances between the HDD read/ write head and the disk itself! The strength of this design and the reason that it has lasted this long is that your HDD has been designed to last 5-10 years and, with a little care and consideration, will last a good deal longer than that (I have a HDD that was in my first pc and is now 32 years old and still working!).

There is a second design that removes the problem of moving parts. The SSD or Solid State Drive / Disk and it is fast! Things work many times faster when run off a SSD than from an ordinary HDD. So why don’t we all have one of these instead? Here’s the rub. Like other Solid State Devices, memory chips for example, they have a limited number of times that they can be written to! This number is huge and you will probably never have to worry about reaching the day when it screams “Enough”. Back to the question ‘Why 2’.

Windows must have a

swap file to work efficiently. A swap file is just as it sounds, when memory becomes short Windows ‘swaps’ information from memory to the file and read information that it needs from the file into memory. It is this swapping that shortens the lifespan of your SDD dramatically. To get around that you can get as much memory as your motherboard will allow and move the swap file to the HDD. The extra memory will reduce or even remove the need to use a swap file on the hard drive!

There is now a third option. There is a drive called a hybrid drive that uses the long term, stable storage of the HDD and the speed of a SSD. Exactly how this works will require much more space than we have today, but it is much faster than your HDD but not as fast as an SSD. There are rumblings that there is a technology that is ‘out there’ and is as fast as normal memory but will still store information when it is turned off, just like a normal HDD. Although first reported in 2011 there doesn’t appear to be anything come of it. I will keep my eyes open for more information for you.

The fourth option is a bit of a cheat and one that anyone can use. Create a virtual drive in a small portion of the 8Gb memory, call it ‘M’ (for memory – seemed like a good idea at the time) and redirected the swap file to it. Problem solved and a computer that moves faster than a ‘rocket sled on rails’.

Can you believe it? The US Secret Service, true to its name, has announced to the entire world, not at all in secret then, that they’re going to buy a sarcasm detector, in the shape of sarcasm detecting software. What’s the point of calling yourself a Secret Service, when you do your business in front of everyone? I tell you, this would never have happened in The Man From UNCLE. You may be thinking here, what the dickens is so good about a sarcasm detector. Believe me, I think that this could develop into a real timesaver for all of us. Think about it. How many times have you watched a comedy programme and turned to someone and asked if it is really supposed to be a comedy? I bet it’s loads of times isn’t it? Well, here we can have the perfect timesaver.

You could just set this device to comedy and it will, apparently, detect whether the show we are watching really is supposed to be funny.

Do you know where we will get the most use out of this? Without a doubt it will be during coverage of things like Prime Ministers Questions and other parliamentary broadcasts. If you’re anything like me you’ll have asked many times about this politician or that politician, is he/she joking? Now we have an immediate answer! But beware, you may well be horrified when you find out at last that these people are actually genuinely serious and don’t see that we are all laughing at them!

Sorry I got sidetracked there. I was actually fascinated that the Secret Service would need software to confirm that someone is being sarcastic or not. It seems that they are somewhat concerned about stuff that is appearing on Twitter and want to be able to judge whether threats against various things are meant as jokes or are deadly serious.

I’m pleased, aren’t you, that the safety of the world is in the hands of such top notch people!

Another win after that could see the tiny Gibraltarian side taking on the might of Standard Liege or Zenit St. Petersburg.

Then simply overcoming a

team such as Arsenal, Porto or Napoli will mean playing amongst the 32 big boys of Europe in the Group Stages. I bet those Gibraltarian players are dreaming of glory. All this is due to Gibraltar gaining membership of UEFA last year.

The Gibraltar Premier League only has 8 clubs. By winning the Rock Cup, College Europa FC gained entry to the Europa League playing FC Vaduz from Liechtenstein next Thursday 3rd July in their first qualifier. It’s certainly a pipe dream for both Gibraltar sides but that’s the beauty of football as it all comes down to 90 minutes on the pitch, plus a bit of Fergie Time and the odd crazy refereeing decision.

In the English FA Cup many a minnow has caused an upset.

My team Liverpool have had egg in their faces a lot, being beaten by Oldham, Worcester and famously Wimbledon in the 1988 Cup Final. Believe!

Wide Set Eyes First, coat all the lashes with a mascara that has a thin, precise wand. Then you want to use a large wand mascara, such as the Sonia Kashuk Lashify Mascara ($6.99, target.com), to coat the lashes around the inner corner to the middle of the lid—this creates the illusion that the eyes are closer together.

If lashes start to get clumpy after a few coats, use a lash comb to separate the lashes and create stronger definition.

Close Set Eyes With close set eyes, Kashuk recommends putting emphasis on the outer corners of the eye to make them look wider.

After curling lashes, apply the first coat of mascara to all of the lashes. The second coat should focus on the lashes from the center of the eyelid to the outside corner. Wiggle the wand back and forth at the roots, making them darker than the roots on the rest of the eye. Kashuk also recommends adding in a few individual lashes if you want more exaggeration. “Use a magnifying mirror to fill in any spots where there’s a void.”

Monolid The key with monolid eyes is to make the lashes long, but go easy on the thickness. You want to be able to see the eyelid through the lashes to keep the eye looking more open. For both coats, use a lengthening mascara, such as Maybelline Define-A-Lash Lengthening Mascara ($7.99, maybelline.com), on all of the lashes.

Small Eyes To make small eyes look larger and rounder, apply one coat on the entire lashes. But for the second coat, focus in the center to make eyes appear bigger. Use a thin wand mascara for more precision and to avoid clumping. http://www.womenshealthmag.

A new concept puts tiny screens with a wireless connection on each nail allowing patterns to be instantly changed from an app.

The ‘bloom your nails’; concept today won a prestigious Intel contest for wearable computers, raising hopes it would one day become a reality.

‘Bloom your nails is a set of wearable devices that are nails,’ said Gin Lee, the Taiwanese student who developed the concept.

Users can replace the patterns and design via a mobile application.

‘Users can upload their own designers, and even sell them to other users,’ Lee said.

‘Through the syncing between the app and nail, you can enrich your fingernail patters and make sure you stand out.’

The nails include wireless chips allowing them to communicate.

The battery powered nails have enough power for an entire day’s wear, Lee said.

Laughter Galore with the Actors Studio

The Actors Studio of Torrevieja is now virtually ready to delight audiences with their latest very funny play, Granny’s Hen Night. This new play will have its premiere at the Casa de Cultura, San Miguel and will bring back memories of all those hen night frolics, plus some unusual event that make this a more memorable hen night than many of us experienced.

Meet granny who is determined to make the most of her last night out with the girls before she marries for the second time. Granny is determined to do all those things she missed out on when she first married many years ago.

Her friends are really looking forward to a great night out but her young, opinionated granddaughter thinks that granny should be past all those sort of things and has no difficulty venting her views. Opposition comes not only from her granddaughter but also from her daughter who feels she has the right to interfere in her mother’s life even though she has

made enough mistakes in her eventful life. Hence we have all the ingredients for a great comedy.

Going into the weekend, both brothers were holding 3rd position in their championship classes and they wasted no time at all in practice to get the best settings from their Advance Moves International Removals sponsored race bikes. When it came to qualifying, Anthony put himself on the first row of the grid, in second position for the Premier SM open class, whilst older brother Mat managed to go one better in the SM35 Master class and found himself in a comfortable Pole position for the Race.

Anthony was first to race, and in the first of his three races he was in third position and fighting for the lead with Angel Grau and reigning Spanish Champion Francesco Cucharrera.

The three were having a tremendous battle with no quarter given when a small mistake from Cucharrera saw him crash in the dirt section leaving Anthony nowhere to go but into Cucha’s fallen bike and both riders were all of

a sudden on the deck. Anthony was first to remount and with his engine still running he was able to restart relatively quickly and set about chasing down the leader. Anthony’s pace was incredible but he just didn’t have enough time left in the race to catch and pass Angel Grau and ended up 2nd at the flag.

The second SM open race once again saw the same three riders in a desperate battle for the lead but this time it was Angel Grau’s turn to make a small error that saw him slide off his bike as he accelerated onto the start finish straight.

Anthony made the pass and set after Cucha who had opened a small gap.

Despite closing the gap Anthony just wasn’t quite able to make the pass and finished 2nd behind Cucha.

The last race of the day saw Cucha and Anthony locked in a race long battle for the lead and despite breaking the lap record Anthony was unable to pass the Reigning Spanish Champion and once again finished a very close second. The day’s results put Anthony in second position on the podium, just missing out on the overall win by one point to Cucha. The result had elevated his position in the Spanish championship to 2nd overall and the team now have until the 3rd round of the Spanish championship on 19th July in Villarcayo, Burgos to find a little more power from Anthony’s bike to get him on terms with Cucha.

Pupils read to dogs and cats at Battersea

Schoolchildren have been cheering up the animals at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home by reading them stories while they wait for new homes.

Young pupils from Cranbourne Primary School in Winkfield, who have raised more than £100 for the rescue home, visited it earlier this month.

Battersea staff say the rhythmic sound of reading can help soothe stressed animals.

The six-year-old children read a collection of books, including short animal stories written by Battersea Ambassador Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

Battersea manager Kaye Mughal said:

“We are so grateful to the pupils and staff at Cranbourne Primary School for raising the money for our dogs and cats, and helping relax them through some storytelling.

Nearly two million people have watched the clip of the cat which refuses to let its owners enjoy a lie-in.

It lets loose with several volleys of rapid staccato against the door while its feline friend waits patiently for the tactic to pay off.

TOURISM authorities in the southern region of Andalucía have warned that airports could close down if the public sector governing body AENA is privatised.

Department head Rafael Rodríguez says it would be ‘hard’ for some of the region’s terminals to be considered ‘economically viable’ if they were in the hands of a private company, and that this could lead to their disappearance.

This 2012 adaptation, directed by Pat O’Connor is based on Michael Morpurgo’s book. It proved so popular that by April 2004 it had been adapted into a play by Simon Reade and was first performed at the Bristol Old Vic starring Alexander Campbell before transferring to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and London’s West End. The film stars Jack O’Connell (Charlie Peaceful), George Mackay (Tommo Peaceful), Alexandra Roach (Molly Monks), John Lynch (Sergeant Hanley) and the late Richard Griffiths (the Colonel) amongst its cast. It was shot on location in Ipswich and Suffolk.

Tommo narrates from 22.00 on the 24th of June 2016 to 06.00 on the 25th of June, whilst in solitary confinement, nervously fumbling with his late father’s watch given to him by Charlie, his brother in No Man’s Land. Eight excruciatingly painful and poignant hours before the tragic denouement…During those fateful moments where Tommo decries that every single moment “will be far too precious” he retells the story of his childhood, living with his family in Iddlesleigh, a farming community prefirst world war England. The action covers 1908-1916.

Morpurgo drew his inspiration for Private Peaceful and War Horse from

interviews conducted with three farmboy veterans who were in their 80s.

Throughout the tale, the melancholic drones of “Oranges and lemons” can be heard from Big Joe to Tommo and finally Charlie. The three brothers. It is only when Tommo ominously mutters “here comes a chopper to chop off your head” then shockingly adding “you’re dead!” that the whole tragedy is unveiled. “But who would shoot their own soldiers?” It will haunt you.

James Peaceful was a gamekeeper and forester for the Colonel living with his wife, Hazel and three sons in a tied cottage on the estate. The boys were exceptionally close and protective of Big Joe who was simple-minded. But it is Charlie’s protective and fatherly relationship of young Tommo that will move you, right up until the end.

Tommo-the name represents an everyman character, had a close relationship with his father and he felt special when he helped his father fell trees. “I love it here. Just the two of us.”

Through his innocence and insecurity he asks his father who he loves most hoping he will say Tommo. James teases his youngest and answers Charlie. Not the right answer. Tommo storms off telling his father he hates him when divine intervention strikes as Tommo is trying to apologise. “I looked up to see the great tree above me swaying when all the other trees were standing still. His daughter, Molly becomes closely entwined and it is mutually reciprocated.

A skinny dipping episode is momentous when she foretells the future with stones, a method used by gypsies. “ The stones say that as long as we stick together we’ll be lucky and happy ‘til the day we die.” Was it wishful thinking or was she tapping into her psychic energy? An infatuated Tommo asks her who she is going to marry and she teases with a Peaceful. Which one though?

Help for Limbless Child and Donations

Craft Fair in Jávea Port off on a good start

Yesterday was the first day of the Summer Craft Fair in the port of Jávea.

Some twenty artesans set up their stalls on the boulevard, half of them around the Red Cross kiosk, the rest a bit further on near the entrance to the port itself. This is the second year that this fair is being held and it is again organised by the craft association Amata. All participants agreed that the quality of the stalls has improved (and it was already pretty high last year!) and that the public already showed a keen interest. Potter José was inviting people to have a go at his potter’s wheel and many others were working on their

stalls.

The fair lasts till the middle of september and as the season draws to its heighth the number of stalls will go up to thirty. About half of the participants is there the whole summer, the rest have booked only one ore two weeks or will come at alternate weeks to have time to make more material. People looking for original craftwork can do worse than to visit this enchanting market on the boulevard in the port of Jávea.

Opening times are from 7 pm till midnight, each night till 14 September.

A bath chair for a child with cerebral palsy was purchased and delivered to the parents who thanked HELP for the donation for their 3 year old son. Their “Thank You Letter” expressed sincere gratitude for the chair, which will be such a help to them as he is unable to support himself. HELP Murcia Mar Menor will also reimburse €500 towards the costs of trips to hospital in Barcelona.

At their general meeting on 17th June, the President Bernard Ash reported that since the last meeting, HELP Murcia Mar Menor had donated €2,000 to Prometeo, which is a day centre for disabled and mentally handicapped adults, who receive tuition in different tasks.

Donations have also been made to AIDEMAR and to AFEMAR Day Centre.

CARITAS Sucina received €1,000 which was reported in the English and Spanish press.

He also confirmed that a cheque for €2000 was to be made to CARITAS La Puebla.

The final figure for funds raised via the Camino Ingles walk

will be around €7,400. Hopefully by the end of June, money will be available to distribute to CARITAS in Santiago de la Ribera and San Javier and to DEBRA. Bernard thanked everyone who had contributed and the volunteers who keep raising money, long may it continue Bernard introduced the meeting to Janet Duxbury from Mar Menor Management La Manga Club, who came to donate money to HELP MMM, which is always welcome. They take in parcels for people in La Manga club that would normally be returned to the sender after a couple of weeks and whatever they collect they give to charity. They have made €370 so far this year, which they wished to donate to HELP. MMM. Bernard asked our representative, Tricia Brister, to accept the cash on behalf of HELP MMM and thanked them for thinking of us. Janet thanked HELP for what they are doing for the community.

The Last Straw

Overnight our engaging little garden tenants, the sparrows, have gone from hero to zero. They have gone from amusing and entertaining to Arch Enemy Number 1 with their invasion and wholesale destruction of our fruit crop.

To thwart them I fished out of the garden box our 2 green nets and draped them over the nectarine tree – not only were they too small to cover all the tree, but they had no deterrent effect whatsoever on the little chirruppers.

So we bought a bigger net, in white.

Between us we managed to cover the nectarine and the plum tree. Pete planted himself

firmly on one side, and deployed his stick as a kind of boom, draping the net over the stick and reaching out until I, precariously perched on the household steps, could grab the net and spread it over the branches.

Having covered the top without falling off the steps and into the middle of the tree we then had to secure the net against the world famous Limaria gales, so I returned to terra firma to secure the hem with clothes pegs.

To do this I had to grovelon the viciously pointy gravel while gathering the net in around the base of the trees. I am not designed to fold up easily, especially not on gravel underneath a tree, and as I Ouched my way along the ground around the trees I could be heard commenting negatively on the charms of our little ffffffeathered fiends.

It did, to a point.

As I was watering the garden I noticed that our white fig tree had one fig ripe and ready.

I am very fond of figs, especially white ones, so I determined that as soon as I had finished and put the hose away, I would pick, eat and enjoy my first fig of the season.

I returned to the tree to find a stalk where not more than 15 minutes ago there had hung the fig of my desire.

I think it is best not to describe my emotions as I gazed upon that stalk.

The sparrows had overhopped the mark and exhausted my tolerance - taking the first fig was the last straw!

Local taxes are non-existent in Alqueria. Which is just as well as the chance of anyone actually paying is extremely remote.

The s e r v i c e s required to protect and keep the Village operating are paid for from the Remitroot Surplus Fund.

Many prominent financial institutions have tried to unravel the intricacies of this fund but none have succeeded. It operates on the principle that the Remitroot Surplus Fund gives A a loan, A pays B for services rendered.

B then pays C for goods and services who then pays A for its utility bills. A then repays the Remitroot Surplus Fund.

All outstanding bills are paid and the Remitroot Surplus Fund isn’t out of pocket.

There must be a flaw somewhere but the system works so well no-one in Alqueria has looked too closely. It is advisable not to try this at home though.

Of all of the Alquerian public services perhaps the Fire and Rescue Service is the hardest working. With the Alquerian liking for civil disorder fires and collapsed masonry are common place. One drawback with this fire service is that in true Alquerian tradition it is inept. It is necessary to have two fire engines, one to put out the fire and the second to put out the firemen. If the fire is any distance from the station it has been known for them to stop for lunch.

José Cabrasilbido, Alqueria’s policeman has a difficult task. As there are no laws in the Village republic he has nothing to enforce. He can’t even manage traffic

or issue parking tickets. All the road markings have worn off long ago. He spends a great deal of time posting notices that announce the cancellation of road closures that were never scheduled in the first place. He struts the Village, holster open so his side-arm can be brought into play at a moments notice. He lets his right hand hover just above the grip. José isn’t going to be surprised. If one looks closely at this weapon one can make out the legend etched on the barrel, ‘Dirty Harry Special-Recommended for children over five.’

Alqueria has one ambulance and Enzo Matanzamas the local doctor has four beds in the Village’s cottage hospital.

Not that the populace has any faith in either the good Doctor or his method of transporting his would-be patients.

In fact it is a common sight to see the paramedic chasing some poor causality who has hobbled off in the hope of avoiding both the ambulance and one of Dr. Enzo Matanzamas’s beds.

To survive for any length of time in Alqueria it is necessary to avoid playing with matches and to eat the proverbial daily apple.

A Nose for the Past As My Precious and I were browsing in the new Zenia Boulevard recently, my nose picked up a faint but distinctive whiff of something that triggered a hazy memory of something from my past. At first I could not identify the smell, but it somehow invoked a feeling of warmth and a time long past involving pleasant memories.

These aromas are usually fleeting and although they have aroused emotions of one type or another, I am rarely able to recall their origins.

We were in a store specialising in perfumes and cosmetics where my lady often takes the opportunity to freshen up by spraying on a free liberal dose of whatever takes her fancy. Nearby was another woman doing the same thing and the evocative aroma seemed to emanate from her, so sidling over and eyeing the label of the bottle she had just used, it suddenly all came back to me when I read the words Lilly of the Valley.

Someone I once knew claimed to have been regressed by a hypnotist, who specialised in taking clients back to past lives and reckoned that some of these mystery aromas were from a previous life. So although they unearth some hidden memories in us, it explains why we cannot positively identify them in the here and now.

This was my late Mum’s scent of choice and as a young boy, pretty much every Christmas I bought her a bottle of this essence with my accumulated pocket money of two bob a week. Even though it was the same present every year and she therefore knew what the inexpertly wrapped box contained, she always showed surprise and joy at my modest gift. The smell of cigars has the same nostalgic effect on me, because a single fat corona in its own aluminium tube was always the Christmas present from me to my Dad. Often

It sounds plausible if you believe in that sort of thing, but I have my serious doubts about this regression lark and the concept of reincarnation in general. I mean, why is it that most people who undergo these sessions seem to have been great American Indian chiefs, members of a Sultans harem or Henry the eighth’s pox doctor in a past life. It’s hardly ever serving wenches or rat catchers. If you believe everything you hear, there appears to have been more Egyptian princesses then, than there are Chinese restaurants now.

The atmosphere of the English countryside has changed dramatically since I was a young lad and with the modernisation of farming techniques (along with the help of good old health and safety I shouldn’t wonder) fings aint what they used to be in the smells department.

But it’s sometimes still possible to experience the fragrance of the farmyard as I remember it and on one occasion when we were motoring through the Cotswolds with friends, one of our

American companions expressed disgust at the pong that filled the car as we passed one particularly ancient looking farm.

To me though, the bouquet was redolent of my childhood spent riding my Hercules bicycle in the country lanes near to my home and I took a deep draught of the intoxicating odour before closing the car window.

For many years the smell of cheese caused me to gag and it was only at the age of twenty six that I tentatively tried a cheeseburger, which to my complete and utter surprise, was an enjoyable experience.

Some of my very earliest memories are from my nursery school days and I clearly recall once being forced to eat a cheese salad. It was this one episode I believe that caused my antipathy to cheese for the next quarter of a century.

A more easily explained aversion for me is the smell of Serrano ham.

During our first year in Spain, we were attending one of the local markets and decided to buy some of the local ham for the weekend – something we had done before on several occasions.

As we waited in the queue, the bloke who was carving the meat from the bone squashed a large bluebottle that had landed on the stall with his broad bladed knife which he then proceeded to wipe on his apron before continuing to serve customers.

Needless to say we have never purchased ham from that stall since and not surprisingly, just the smell of the ham now has my stomach churning and I rarely eat the stuff even when dining out in Spanish restaurants.

Smell, a powerful sense . . . Underrated and one that we least appreciate.

60 players took part in our Team Game today which was a Texas Scramble, at our home course of La Marquesa, on Thursday 19 June. This game was a shotgun start, followed by a brunch and our annual fund raising auction on behalf of the Captain’s Charity, which this year is AECC. Various events have taken place during the year and these together with the auction raised around €1600.

This money was received by Debbie Weedon wearing her other hat as regular fund raiser for AECC. May we take this opportunity to thank all the members for generously providing items for the auction and for putting their hands in their pockets to raise a considerable sum of money for a worthwhile cause during the course of the year.

Quesada Golf Society Last Wednesday there was a good turn-out for the society’s game at “Font De Llop”. Llop means “wolf” but thankfully there were none around on the golf course. The weather was ideal for golf. A sunny day with a light breeze only getting up towards the end of most players round.

The course was in good condition with the greens being a bit difficult to read and there were a few putts left short and some missed from close range.

The game was an individual Stableford competition with 2 divisions. The winner of the Gold Division was “young” Roy Westlake with 33 points followed by John “Robin Hood” King with 29 points and “Stormin” Norman Lewis with 28 points. In the Silver Division the winner was a welsh lass from Barry Island, Glenys Thomas with 33 points.

Her putting on the day was quite awesome. In second place was “Brummie” Ray Lee with 31 points and in third place was “Bonny Scotsman” Ronnie Spiers with 30 points. Ronnie has some new clubs and has had a few lessons earlier in the year and the benefits are certainly starting to pay dividends. The “Roy” for the most shots played went

to Gary Haisman. The winners of the Nearest the Pins were Roy Westlake, John Mills, Ray Lee and Gary Haisman. There were a couple of games in the annual knock-out competition with John King beating Alan Briggs and Roy Westlake just overcoming the challenge of Darryll Wright, who was playing with his new driver which will eventually improve his game or so he says, to progress to the next round.

After the game the players returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations and a tasty hot and a cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts Dave and Anita. The next game is at Alenda on Wednesday 2 July. There is a members meeting at the Quesada County Club on Tuesday 24 June at 10.30 am which all members are encouraged to attend. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

The Legionnaires do Battle

The normal scene of a friendly Thursday afternoon bowls rollup transpired into one of fun on Thursday when The Royal British Legion Legionnaires Bowls Group split their participating members into two competing groups, denominated

the Celts and Saxons.

The teams comprised of the English (Saxons) competing against the combined Irish, Welsh and predominantly Scottish members (Celts), with 30 players participated in trips over 5 rinks. Exactly 700 years to the month the Scots repelled the English with a resounding victory at the Battle of Bannockburn in the Scottish war of independence, and so history repeated itself on this glorious sunny afternoon at Casa Ventura, with the Celts winning on 3 of the 5 rinks,

and the Saxons winning on one and drawing on another. The final tally however reveals that this was yet another resounding victory for the Celts, with their total score reading 99 points to the Saxons 52. A winners trophy was presented to Malcolm Ayton, who captained the Celts, by Brenda Brown, the Legionnaires’ Captain, and each of the 15 members of the Celts contingency also received a congratulatory free drinks voucher.

One of the finest jewels in the area’s golfing crown must be the lovely, but challenging, course at Las Colinas. A buzz of excitement always rustles through the attending ensemble whenever we visit the “hidden valley”.

It’s now just on 4 years since this par 71 layout with its total of 90 teeboxes opened to the public & has since rushed up the popularity chart, attaining the current accolade of one of Europe’s most popular golfing destinations.

Even having 5 tees on each hole doesn’t always mean you’ll be teeing off from the ideal spot - remedial work on the teeboxes meant the yellow blocks were moved back to the whites & the reds were alongside the blues! This made an already longish track quite a few hundred metres longer & kept the scores of all but one of us in the high 20’s & low 30’s.

It was a hot & sunny June day & with quite a few areas off limits for buggies, it was also an energy sapping experience for those of us not quite in our prime!

In fact, although I was personally very pleased to find a splendid, newly constructed staircase down to the par 3, 7th green I was disappointed however to find that it had not been fitted with a “Stenna” stairlift!.....maybe they just haven’t got round to it yet.

The five NTP’s went to Norman Padmore (5), Dave Davey (7), Scotty Phillips (10), Alan McDonald (14) & John Aitchison (17).

Beverley Cullen was awarded the visitors’ prize for her 29 points.

Two special prizes were awarded to Noel Bannon 18 (best front nine but not in the prizes) & Phil Birtwistle - 16 (best back nine but not in the prizes).

High attendances once more mean we can reward the top 5 in all 3 divisions. Bronze category - Mick Roscoe (27 C/B), Neal Sheldon (27 C/B), Norman Padmore (31), Jenny Staines (32) & Chris Hamblett (35).

Silver winners were Scotty Phillips (29), Mike Jordan (31 C/B), Ken Flaherty (31 C/B), Alan McDonald (33) & Alan Gilbert with best score of the day (39).

The Golden boys top 5 were Theo “come on the Dutch” Boelhouwer (28), Capt Steve Davis (30), Tony Smale (32), Ben Price (34 C/B) & Darren Hancock (34 C/B).

The one singles knockout matchplay game was a hard-fought tussle which went right down to the last putt on the 18th where Darren Hancock just got the better of Captain, Steve Davis. Well done to all the day’s winners!

What a day The sun came out to greet the 70+ golfers who played in the annual MABS Shield Open Golf Competition on Saturday 14th June hosted by The Camposol Club de Golf.

Main competition sponsor Citreon( Auto AlMazarron) brought along an array of cars for viewing including the brand new Citreon Cactus (not due for general release until Wednesday18th June!).

As play started the MABS volunteers busied themselves displaying the banners and advertisement boards of the other sponsors who included:Tallers Norberto Motos Raul Dario Pinturas Euronics Ibex Insurance Expat Pensions Avalon Lux del Sol Llamas Chimeneas The competition was keenly fought with the eventual winners being - Baz Elmore; Ray Cole; Andy Money and Mark Taylor – they received the MABS Shield and individual medals to mark the event from Bartollo – owner of Citreon Autos Al-Mazarron.

Having lost their last league match, Torrevieja looked to beat Madrid 2nd team for the second time this season to get back on the winning track. And this they did with style.

Madrid won the toss and put Torrevieja in to bat. The score moved steadily along until,in the 10th over Adam Alger was caught behind for 18. With Ciaran Guichard keeping one end tight, the batsmen at the other end were trying to push the score along. However, only Mark Talbot (16) and Lee Brown (22) managed anything of any note.

With the score on 86, young Ciaran was needlessly run out by the captain but finished with the top score of 28. After that runs came slowly and eventually in the 41st over Torrevieja were all out for 121. Pick of the Madrid bowlers were Dinesh Babu with 3 wkts for 20 runs and Angapan Sarangapani with 5 for 35.

With a slightly cloudy start to the day the temperature was very pleasant for a game of golf, todays competition was the Waltz, where teams of 3 players count 1 score on the 1st, 2 on the 2nd and 3 on the 3rd hole,then back to one score on the 4th and soon. there were 18 players which gave us 6 teams.

Some good scores were recorded today with the 3 teams that were placed all playing under par.

My team included Rod Loveday who has recently had his handicap cut and today he showed what he was capable of by playing 4 under his new handicap, well done Rod, the other

member of my team was was a visitor, Tony Boyd, who also played very well and interestingly he is a member of the “On Course Foundation” This foundation has been created to offer injured men and women of our armed forces the opportunity to partake in golf - one of the few sports in which disabled people can compete with their able counterparts.

Our Trophy game took us to Lo Romero, where the course was in excellent condition the weather and golf was hot. It was the girls that shone today though with one player taking most of the honours.

Theresa Wright won the lady’s longest drive, overall winner on the day, silver division winner, she also had the most points on the front nine but we felt she had enough to carry, welcome to the your new handicap Theresa. Gold division winner was Colin Fear.

With the juniors improving game by game, and more players beginning to join , the future for Torrevieja Cricket Club looks very promising. Thanks must go to the ground staff at the Torrevieja Sports centre, who, having never heard of the game of cricket, are now beginning to understand what is required of a cricket pitch. Vicky Pigneur, and Samira Lucumbi supported Paula in these relays winning medals in the freestyle relay. More outstanding achievements saw Vicky win 3rd in the 200m butterfly event and 6th in the 100m backstroke.

For the boys Elian Rio del Castillo stood alone for Torrevieja and came 4th in three of his races, 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle. Fourth being the hardest position to achieve was then rewarded with gold in his 400m freestyle event. With strong competition this was an outstanding result.

TMGS Match Report

ROJALES NETBALL CLUB - CAMPEONES!!

Rojales Netball Club were in action this past weekend playing host to teams from Madrid and Murcia.

Despite the intense heat the five competing teams played some great netball with the big game of the day being Rojales versus Madrid A. This game would determine the tournament winners so started very tensely with both teams sussing one another out. Rojales then got into their stride and with Katie, Ronnie and Tracy starting to dominate the centre court this allowed the shooters of Carly and Sam to concentrate on putting the ball into the net. At the other end of the court Rojales’ defence of Claire and Tracey managed to break down the rhythm of Madrid’s shooters enabling them only four successful shots.

With the game finishing 11-4 to Rojales this meant that they were the overall winners of the tournament.

Louise, Mercedes, Carol, Jennie and Nikki played some good netball switching positions to give two of their young players, Annabel and Neve, some experience of their first tournament. They finished a very respectable third beating Madrid B and Murcia 3-2 and 4-3 respectively.

The day finished with the presentation ceremony and both the Mayor and Sports Councillor of Rojales came along to present the trophies. Sam of Rojales and Annabel of Quesada received Best Team Player awards and then came the main one, the Winners Trophy, being presented to Rojales - Campeones!!

Rojales Netball Club would like to thank Heather and Luke who kept the tournament running smoothly and Pam for umpiring tirelessly throughout the day; and of course Rojales Town Hall for their continued support.

On this day in history, in 1583, the first ever life policy was sold and when it came time to claim, it was disputed, so there is in over 450 years Insurance Companies were messing customers about and still doing it today. Also in 1963 “Our ‘Enery” put Cassius Clay on his rump with the hammer in the 4th round. Apart from that info, only one member of TMGS achieved or bettered his handicap at the Seve designed Alicante Golf Course.

Surprise surprise, everyone found their way to the “Hidden Gem” in Alicante and most, if not all, enjoyed a good test of golf and it must be said that a visit to this absolute jewel hidden in concrete should be a “must” on any golfers list of courses to play. Arrive at the course (when you can find it!) and you are treated to a smile and a very honest welcome by the staff which, in itself, is a rare occurrence in the majority of courses in Spain.

The results on the day showed that, at long last, the Gold mob fared better than their Silver lads (and lasses) and it took 34 points for Vice-Captain John Eyre and Secretary Alan Rixson to claim 3rd and 2nd places with Alan taking it on the count

back. The winner was Dag Lovas (again!) with 36 points and the only one to achieve handicap.

The Silver boys (and girls) fell off a little and it only needed for Ernie (The Belfast Bandit) Wilson to claim 3rd spot and this seems to be getting to be a regular occurrence for him of late. In 2nd spot was Kate Helm who was pipped by Kenny Hunter on the count back, both having 35 points although it must be said that Kate should have wiped the floor with everyone with a very tidy 26 points on the front nine and sadly, the wheels fell off and she only managed 9 points on the back nine.

Those that know this course are aware that there are 6 par 3’s and we, TMGS, reward the NTP’s with a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels and today, we gave away 4 sleeves to those lucky enough to hit the sometimes very long greens and those lucky ones today were Alison Mowat, Roger Nilsen, Joe Dean and Kate Helm.

Kate also picked up her share of the “Two’s” pot with John Eyre taking the other 50%.

We also reward the ‘best guest’ with a Society towel and ball marker and this went to George Smith with 33 points.

Lo Marabu Golf Society

Lo Marabu Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Villaitana on 12th June 2014.

Every year our golf society heads off to Benidorm for a two day away trip and this year was no different despite the numbers being dramatically impacted by the football world cup, hollow tined greens and our sponsor opening their new bar venture at the same time.

A small but happy group of golfers arrived at Villaitana (Levante) to find the course in good condition despite the recent hollow tining programme and this reflected in some good scores on the day The winning scores on the day were: 1st – Andy Jones – 43 points 2nd – Mike Probert – 36 points 3rd – Dave Bensley – 35 points 4th – Phil Johnson – 35 points

5th – Winston Blackwood – 33 points 6th – Terry Drayton – 32 points Benidorm Buddha – Jack Fanning – 29 points Putting Competition – Terry Drayton We headed into Benidorm for an overnight stay with some good food and lively entertainment.

The following day a small group played the par 62 (Poniente) course and our Captain again headed the way with another 43 points off his new reduced handicap.

Our next fixture is the Captain versus Vice-Captain Challenge day at Lo Romero on 26th June 2014.

THE COMMITTEE TROPHY We arrived at Lo Romero for the first time this year, to find it in magnificent condition ,fairways and greens being a pleasure to play.This resulted in some excellent scoring, with certain handicaps being severely cut as a result.

Three nearest the pin prizes were won, by new member Alan Coleman,Jimmy Scott and Lynn Young.

The main presentation was held over until the Midsummer Ball on Friday,results as follows; 3rd Place - Mike Green 35 points 2nd Place - Elspeth Craig 37 point Committee Trophy Winner - Alan Craig 41 Points Alan’s score was remarkable, bearing in mind he had given himself a handicap cut earlier in the week, having scored well on the same course on Tuesday. Honesty

brings its own rewards!

EL PLANTIO GOLF – 17th JUNE 2014 NICHOLSON TROPHY & ARTHURS BASH It was the first anniversary of Rockets Golf Society and Arthur Williams birthday bash, although he did not say what birthday it was! The competition was 3 clubs and a putter, just to make life a little livelier.

The El Plantio course has gone through a transformation and the greens and the fairways are now in really fine fettle, making it a very attractive course to play again, it shows that a lot of work has gone on; even a new cart path goes around the back of the 5th green. Well done to the green keeping team.

Back to the three clubs and putter competition its goes to show that Rockets members like course management with scores better than when they play with 14.

At the weekend Formentera del Segura held their 3rd annual 7’s tournement with teams coming from far and wide, with Albacete, Murcia regional champions as well as other teams from the Murcia region, San Javier, ORCOS (Orihuela juniors) and Torreveija. Also teams from the Valencian region with newly formed Tarafa and long established Elche.

The day kicked off with ORCOS against Torrevieja a far more experienced team, which showed what a great future Orihuela have if they can keep these kids on board with the game going from end to end and ending up in a 20-20 draw.

As the day went on the results going one way or the other with Albacete winning all of there games, but all played in the true spirit of rugby and showed how far rugby has come along in the area with new teams like Tarafa appearing.

With many close games and ORCOS getting some very good results against far more experienced teams it was a great day all round for the team and the young lads can hold their heads up high.

The final game was Albacete v Elche in a very tight game, which went into sudden death with next try wins in extra time, with tired legs and bodies Albacete managed to snatch it, but all credit must also go to

Elche for their part in a very entertaining final.

The best thing about the weekend was when teams due to some injuries were short of players the other teams gave them players and helped out something you would never see in other sports.

At the end of the day it was rugby that was the winner and that was what counted with teams already asking to come back next year so good news for the area.

A big thank to Formentera del Segura for letting us hold the tournament again this year and for all of their help, as well as for the refs that came and helped out together with EKA on the day.

Most important of all, all the teams that came day and made it a great day of rugby and the supporters as well. Also a big thank you for a great third half held in Bar Petito.

I am now at Zoco Market on Sundays third row up from the road at the back of the market, so come on down there for all of your rugby branded clothing and playing gear, and anything you want to know about rugby in the area.
