Reach Out announce Assisted Housing Fund

Local humanitarian charity, Reach Out/Extiende La Mano, has launched an Assisted Housing Fund in response to a recent serious demand for emergency housing in the area. The charity’s President, Karolina Leonard explained, “We have had a few desperate cases of late. A young 19 year old homeless girl has discovered she is pregnant and is currently sleeping rough. We also have a widower with three young children (the youngest is just two). His wife passed away last year and he is in a real vicious circle. He cannot find work because he is caring for the children, he cannot care for the children because he cannot work - and very recently, he and his children were evicted and are now homeless. Luckily, he was able to place the children temporarily (but

seperately) with family.” Karolina continued, “The assisted housing fund is a seperate account which will allow us to help out with emergency accommodation in special cases. It is quite possible that at some stage, these people might get assistance from social services, but the paperwork takes so long to go through that they could be on the streets for quite a while, waiting for a form to be stamped or an application to be approved.” If anyone can donate to the assisted housing fund, Reach Out would be very, very grateful for any amount small, medium or large. Torrevieja Branch 25th Anniversary Garden Party

Sunday 22nd June was another exciting day in this the 25th year for Torrevieja Branch of The Royal British Legion. Casa Ventura in San Luis was the venue for an early evening get together with food, music and dance. The weather had improved since morning and the sun shone on Casa Ventura for the garden party. The sounds of cornet, drum and bass drifted around the pool area as Just Brass played in the late afternoon to around 80 Branch members. After a delicious Buffet which included Turkey, Ham and all the accompaniments prepared and served by Kevin Robinson and his staff, temptation was a choice of mouth watering cakes. The Branch had been planning this event since February and had obtained permission from the Ayuntamiento to hold this Garden Party, signed and sealed on 14th May 2014 – BUT due to the objection of a local owner the Branch event had to be curtailed and the Band departed after only thirty minutes excellent entertainment. The Policia Local had attended and produced a letter from the Ayuntamiento dated 13th June, which the Branch had never seen or received, stating the event was

in contravention of a local ordnance, and the licence issued on 14th May was disallowed!! Not to be totally beaten we proposed that the Terry Horvath Morris Dancers perform indoors. Following a quick clear away after the Buffet, the dancers took the floor to a packed audience in the Lounge. The small 3 piece band accompanied the troupe as they danced various dances, and a short explanation preceded each item by one of their number. As the sun drifted down behind the houses, the evening ended with a raffle which produced many happy party goers, the objection from the sad local did not stop the Branch having another successful event and raising much needed funds for The Royal British Legion. Many thanks must be made to Dianne & Allan Budd and their team who organised the function, decorated the pool area with bunting and flags. Our thanks must also go to Just Brass, we were all looking forward to their music, and The Terry Horvath Morris Dancers for their energy in difficult times. Rod and Sue Weeding from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre attempted to save an abandoned and starving horse found last Friday in the Campo de Guardamar – but sadly the rescue came too late. They rushed to the property at 10am after receiving a request for help from Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s animal welfare arm. “We found a very young horse starving and completely dehydrated,” says EHCRC co-founder Sue Weeding. “She was lying in full sun and had had nothing to eat or drink for four to five days. She was far too weak to get up. She was too weak to even get her head up.” We managed to hold her head up enough to give her some water and later some food and with the help of our veterinarian Dorothea she was given 25-litres of water via intravenous drip over the next few hours. “But it turned out that to curb her hunger pains, she had been eating the sand bed she was lying on and her colon was full of it,” Sue says. “It couldn’t pass through the intestine unless she got up and she was just too weak. So at 9pm we sadly had to put her to sleep.” While assisting the mare, we heard barking and discovered six starving dogs locked away in dark cages on the same property. We made a hole in a wall by removing some blocks that Sue managed to climb through and then had to pass the animals through the hole one at a time. There were one male and five female Rottweilers, which had likely been used for breeding. “If we hadn’t found the horse, without a doubt the dogs would have died in that hellhole,” Sue says. “They were all so weak and just skeletal.” All six dogs are now being cared for by the Cats N Dogs Aid association from Quesada. The public is invited to meet the many animals saved from abuse and neglect during Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s Sunday open days from 1pm-4pm. Entrance is free and guided tours begin at 2pm. Tasty food and refreshments are available in the

garden café. The EHCRC welcomes any donations and sponsorships to help support their important work. Every single cent donated to EHCRC or spent in their seven charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the 82 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre. The EHCRC charity shops are located in La Zenia, Los Montesinos, La Siesta, Ciudad Quesada, Guardamar, La Marina and Pilar de Horadada. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are gratefully welcomed. Large donated items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity shops. EHCRC is also looking for volunteers to staff its shops for a few hours or days each week. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. Especially a Friday van driver. Bar, restaurant and business owners are also welcome to stage charity events to support the centre. EHCRC will ensure press and radio publicity both before and after the event, plus coverage on the centre’s popular Facebook page. Please contact cofounder Sue Weeding on 652 021 980 or email info@easyhorsecare.net. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For more details and directions to the centre, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Skype – Is this a contraction of the phrase “SKy high hYPE” (Wrong but funny) or “SKy Peer” (True and clever) or “Sky Peer-toPeer” (which was it’s original proposed name) or just a truly worthwhile addition to worldwide communications (your choice)? Skype is a freemium voice-over-IP service and instant messaging client. Freemium? Apparently, this is a pricing system where the initial, very usable and in this case, very good product, “Skype” is free and then a premium (cost) can be incurred for other services. Skype was first released in August 2003. It was created by Janus Friis (Denmark) and Niklas Zennström (Sweden) in cooperation with Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn (Estonia) and had 725 million registered users as of the end of 2011. These numbers have taken a dip due to competitors like ‘Viber’, ‘What’s App’ and ‘Google Hangouts’. The service allows users to communicate by voice using a microphone, video by using a webcam, and instant messaging over the Internet. Phone calls may be placed to recipients on the traditional telephone networks. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free of charge, while calls to land-line telephones and mobile phones are charged from a “Top Up” or “Direct Debit” system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features, including file transfer, and video-conferencing. What are the main benefits of using Skype? Well, registered users of Skype are identified by a unique Skype Name (mine is ‘saiminja’ or just use my email address), and may be listed in the Skype directory (just like any ordinary phone book). Skype allows these registered users to communicate through both instant messaging, voice and video chat. Voice chat allows telephone calls between pairs of users and conference calling, and uses a proprietary audio codec (A CODEC is simply

a method of COding and DECoding an audio signal so that it can travel over the internet). Skype’s text chat client allows group chats, emoticons, storing chat history and editing of previous messages. The usual features familiar to instant messaging users—user profiles, online status indicators, and so on—are also included. The Online Number, a.k.a. SkypeIn, service allows Skype users to receive calls on their computers dialled by conventional phone subscribers to a local Skype phone number; local numbers are available for Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Denmark, the Dominican Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A Skype user can have local numbers in any of these countries, with calls to the number charged at the same rate as calls to fixed lines in the country. The countries on this growing list are referred to collectively as the SkypeIn Countries. Skype supports conference calls, video chats and screen sharing between 25 people at a time for free! Also it isn’t limited to any one operating system. I have it running on my Linux box as you read this. It is also on my Windows XP and 7 machines and my little Android tablet. I also understand that you can get it on the iPad! So far it sounds great but what are the drawbacks? Firstly, you can not use it for emergency calls due to a ruling in the American courts stating that it isn’t an “interconnected VoIP provider”. Who cares! It works! Next time we will be setting up a Skype account and you can then contact me. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

It’s a Leo thing apparently; the trait I have of leaving some things to the last possible minute. At school even with all the holidays to do my homework, it would still be done Sunday night before term started again. At secondary school even though it was a 9am start we weren’t officially late until registration finished at 0925. I guess the leeway was in place in case a school bus ever arrived late. Being the only Catholic school for miles around 90% of the students were coached in from across Surrey. For those that walked to school the system could be played, sometimes I would crawl out of bed at the last possible moment, walk the 15 minutes to school and be there for what I reasoned was ‘in good time’ which was about 0923. The school had the grand title of Saint Peters and Merrow Grange RC Comprehensive, so named as it was 2 schools separated by a 200 yard walk down a quiet lane. Until 1971 the upper school had

braben’s blog... Loopy Science

I think scientists may be loopy and I think you may agree at the end of this week’s nonsense. After careful research scientists have found that a frog’s tongue can lift up to three times its own body weight! I’m not awfully sure how that helps the frog, unless there are competitions, that even David Attenborough knows nothing about, between different species of frogs to find the one whose tongue is strongest. It’s an interesting zoological snippet and perhaps one that could turn heads at a dinner party, but beware. If you do introduce this gem into your anecdotal repertoire, don’t be surprised to find invitations suddenly dry up. After all, not many people are willing to discuss the merits of a frog’s tongue over their meal! What drew me to this report was, just why on earth anyone would want, or indeed need, to ascertain just how much weight a frog’s tongue can support. Scientists can do great work. Only recently the people who were involved with the Higgs Boson experiment, where they were searching for a particular particle, think that they found it. God knows how, it took me three hours once to find Burnley and that’s a sizeable town, so finding for a microscopic particle is some task. So yes, they do some good stuff, which makes me wonder why they bothered to investigate a frog’s tongue at all. What happens? Does a scientist wake up one morning and, over his Corn Flakes, decide he’ll spend time investigating that tongue, for no other reason than it appears to be a jolly wheeze and nobody else has done it? What do they do with this information? How does the knowledge that this tongue is a pretty nifty thing help us? Seems a bit of a waste of their time to me, but what I know about frog’s tongues and their contribution to civilisation is about equal to Newcastle United’s trophy haul in the last 45 years-zero! Perhaps the work on frogs isn’t that surprising. After all, we’re talking about scientists here, the gang that experimented on giving drugs to an elephant, to see if it would bring on temporary madness. It did! Next thing you know, they’ll be telling us that research shows howling like a wolf makes you feel better. Oh, it’s too late-they already have! Honestly, they really have. I rest my case. Scientists are loopy. Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. been a convent school for girls (Merrow Grange) and the lower school a boy’s school (St. Peters). There were extra-long breaks between classes as we often had to walk between the two buildings. Merrow Grange was a mock Tudor manor house with a grand wooden staircase and floors that creaked beautifully when trodden on. The school had a good reputation for music and the music teacher Mr Carter had the grandest room of all. It was big enough to use as a recital room, with a vaulted ceiling, balcony and huge leaded bay windows. He must have loved coming to work; I certainly did as he was my form tutor for two years. Students were banned from climbing the tiny circular staircase to the balcony, but if left unsupervised momentarily, we boys would take our chances. The stairs lead further up to the mythical attic where we supposedly would have been

expelled if ever caught there. Sadly it was padlocked and I never got in. The Grange also housed a convent with ancient nuns within. As newbies aged 11 and 12 the older boys as a rite of passage scared us with the legend of a ghostly Blue Nun that wandered the attic rooms at night carrying a light. In hindsight ‘Blue Nun’ was also the brand name of a popular wine but we fell for it. Merrow Grange was built in 1868 and one owner was a keen botanist planting Sequoia/Giant Redwoods and other exotics throughout the then 45 acres gardens. The gardens were landscaped with Pulhamite an artificial stone. Sunken paths, ponds and artificial hills were created which are now all overgrown. The most interesting part was nicknamed ‘the caves’, again we were strictly forbidden to enter. It’s actually a Grade II listed grotto with a sunken fernery covered by an iron work

glazed roof. A winding staircase leads down to a dark tunnel with only one way in/out. When the Pulhamite was mixed 100 years ago something alike to glitter was added and by candle or torchlight the walls shimmer magically. We would jump the school fence at weekends to explore the overgrown gardens and caves, night time made it more adventurous. Once my mate John Fergus went and hid in the tunnel. We searched for him but gave up; we had almost reached the exit when the sod terrified us by screaming ghoulishly from behind us with a torch held under his chin making his face glow red. John had discovered a tiny cave in the roof of the tunnel and had hidden up there whilst we passed underneath. Then Gollum like he clambered down to scare the living daylights out of us – happy days!

Home Mortgages Fell by 13.4% in April

The number of new mortgages granted on homes recorded in the property registers stood at 15,326 in April, which is 13.4% less than the same month in 2013, according to data published last week by the National Statistics Institute, who pointed out that these figures come from transactions carried out in previous months. With April’s year-on-year decline, mortgaged homes return to negative rates, after rising by 2% in March following nearly four years of cuts. However, given that Easter was celebrated in April this year and last year in March, the Institute stated that it would be more sensible to analyse the results of both months together. In the fourth month of the year, the average value of the mortgages on homes reached 100,394 euros, which is 6.2% more than the same month of 2013, while the capital loaned fell by 8% year-on-year, to 1,538.6 million euros. Month-on-month (April over March), home mortgages fell by 7.8%, its lowest decline in this month since 2011. Capital loaned for home mortgages experienced a monthly cut of 9.6%, also registering its lowest drop in the past four years. In the first quarter of the year, the number of mortgaged homes reduced by 21.9% over the same period of 2013, with the capital loaned falling by 20.7% and the average loan value increasing by 1.5%. The regions which registered the greatest number of mortgages on homes in April were Andalusia (2,760), Catalonia (2,489) and Madrid (2,359). In April, fourteen regions registered a

lower number of home mortgages than in the same month of 2013, with the largest decreases being those recorded in Murcia (-29.6%) and Andalusia (22.8%). The only year-on-year increases were registered for La Rioja (+80.2%), Navarra (+67.7%) and the Canary Islands (+9.7%). In addition, the regions where most capital was loaned for home mortgages were Madrid (320.3 million euros), Catalonia (302.7 million) and Andalusia (245.5 million). According to data from the statistical agency, during the fourth month of the year 23,465 mortgages were constituted on rural and urban properties (homes are included within the latter), representing a decrease of 20.5% compared to April 2013. The capital loaned for the mortgages granted rose, however, by 16.1% over the same month in 2013, to 3,731.5 million euros, while the average mortgage value on all rural and urban properties stood at 159,025 euros, which represents an increase of 46.1% over April 2013. The average interest rate for mortgage loans on homes in April reached 3.97%, against 4.32% registered a year earlier, while the average interest rate for all rural and urban properties stood at 3.84%, with an average term of 21 years. 93.1% of the mortgages in April used a variable rate, compared with 6.9% on a fixed rate. The Euribor is the reference rate most used in the constitution of variable rate mortgages, specifically in 87.5% of all the new contracts.

Foreign Tourists Spent 20,129 Million Euros in Spain to May

Spending by international tourists reached 20,129 million euros through to May, representing an increase of 9.1% over the same period in 2013, according to figures released on Thursday from the Egatur tourism expenditure survey conducted by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. In the first five months of the year, the average daily expenditure increased by 0.3%, to 111 euros, and the average expenditure per tourist increased by 0.8%, to 939 euros, as did the average length of stay, which stood at 8.5 nights. In the month of May alone, international tourists spent 5,273 million euros, which is 3.5% more than the same month last year. British tourists were the visitors who spent the most money in Spain between January and May, with 3,806 million euros, and accounted for 18.9% of the total. They also registered the greatest increase in that period, of 12.3%. They were followed closely by German tourists, with 3,374 million euros, and an increase of 10.6%; the Scandinavian countries, with 2,340 million euros, up 10.8%, and then the French tourists, with 1,911 million euros and a rise of 2.6%. Visitors from the United States ranked fifth with 864 million euros spent

Rental contract In Spain, it is normal to give one to threemonths notice of intention to vacate. The notice letter should be sent by registered post. An inventory of the property will be made before a landlord will agree to return a deposit. Property sales Estate agents in Spain handle most property sales although it is possible to sell a property privately. Signing of the final deed of sale is considered the legal completion of a sale. Anyone who cannot attend the event in person may give power of attorney to a third party to sign on their behalf. Properties purchased with a mortgage will have had life insurance in place which may not be cancelled until the sale is completed. Insurance House insurance can be cancelled once a sale is completed. Utility bills (Electricity, Water, Gas, Telephone, Internet) As with any house move, there are utility bills to be settled and meters to be read. If meters are not outside the property, access will be required. Utility bills in Spain are commonly paid by direct debit so these will need to be cancelled once final payment has been made. Leave a forwarding address with all the companies involved. Health Care Anyone who has received medical treatment while in Spain should have their records forwarded to their new

practitioner or ask for a copy. Banking A Spanish bank account should be kept open for a short period to settle final bills. Make sure that the direct debits have been cancelled once final payments of the bills have been made. Cancel your credit cards. Tax Be aware that under some circumstances the proceeds of property sales will be subject to Spanish capital gains tax. Income Tax To ensure that each individual understands their own obligations with regard to tax liability on departure from Spain it would be wise to seek professional advice. Education Give schools a reasonable amount of notice of a child’s departure. There may be outstanding bills for school fees, transport or meals to be settled. Request from the school a certificate stating the latest grade passed by the child when giving notice of departure. Leave a forwarding address for any correspondence. Correspondence A redirection service is offered by the Spanish post office (Correos). Animals The EU pet passport covers dogs and cats for movement within Europe and the Pets Travel Scheme (PETS) allows qualifying domestic pets to travel to and from the UK without a period of quarantine. Local vets can provide information and documentation.

Summer Comfort

This time of year poses an uncomfortable problem for us ladies. How can I feel comfortable in my underwear whilst still looking smart and feminine. How can I feel supported with shape and avoid feeling tight, sweaty and uncomfortable. There are so many difficulties: Rashes caused by under wired bras, synthetic materials causing you to sweat and feel generally clammy, trying to get support without having to wear cumbersome clothing just to cover up your lingerie. I guess the most frequent question people ask is: “Have you got an underwired bra that can both support me and feel good.” Now this can be a challenge. Here in Spain the key to dealing with summer heat is wearing a really good quality bra (not necessarily expensive) or one made from cotton. As well as a good quality bra it is vital that you have one that is well fitted and suits your body. This is not just a question of size. Most women prefer underwired bras in order to give them the shape they want but did you know there are non under wired bras that work just as effectively. They are not easy to find I grant you but a quality bra retailer should stock one or more of these. We all know that a bra size from one manufacturer

is not always the same as exactly the same size bra strap and cup from another. This is partly due to differences in how the bras are manufactured but at least as much to do with body shape and breast shape. Bras are not made to measure and it takes an expert eye to help you choose a new model size and shape, not to mention sometimes a degree of trial and error. This is one of the reasons why internet sales of lingerie are not as high as other types of clothing. It isn’t just that women prefer individual care when buying a bra it’s also because we need to try them out. Fortunately, this can be done over our clothing providing the bra you wear to the retailer is not padded. Back to the bra quality then. I firmly believe that there is simply no substitute for quality. It’s not difficult to find cheap bras but you will be very lucky indeed if they don’t make you feel uncomfortable or cause you to perspire. One of the best solutions is a cotton under wired bra. You need a few this time of year but they are very affordable if you know where to go. As I tell my customers, “wear one and one in the wash.” Especially when wearing our cotton strapless bras that come in white and black and are so comfortable, its all I ever have to wear in the hot summer heat. The other really important piece of lingerie vital to feeling cool and supported is some 100%cotton Maxi or High leg knickers similar in style to the Sloggi. These can be competitively priced and because they are cotton will allow your skin to breathe. You do not need to pay the earth for them. Also girls, don’t forget to wear skin colour under your whites especially this time of year. White on White is a big no no. You can find all the lingerie in this article at my store in Zoco and Playa Flamenca Market. Directions below. We also have an excellent exchange policy. Just bring back the items with tags attached. FRACTIONAL CO2 LASER Now Available At BEAUTIFUL YOU CLINIC - LA MARINA URB screen and wear brimmed hats, you can maintain the good effects of your CO2 laser treatment for several years. How long does the fractional CO2 laser take to work?

How does the fractional CO2 laser work? The fractional CO2 laser takes the CO2 laser beam and fractionates, or pixellates that beam into thousands of tiny little shafts of light. These tiny shafts of light penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. The skin then repairs those tiny shafts by pushing out the old sun damaged skin and replacing it with new skin. The “collateral” heat damage also helps to shrink existing collagen. How long do the effects of a fractional CO2 resurfacing laser treatment last? That depends on how well you protect your skin from the sun and other factors that cause aging like your general health, smoking, changes in weight, etc. If you apply sun-

How much do fractional CO2 laser treatments cost? The cost varies depending on the areas to be treated. Expect full face treatments between €500 -€700. Eye and lip area around €200 per session. You’ll get a specific quote on your consultation. You will note that the cost of these treatments is quoted much higher elsewhere in Europe and USA. I am taking into consideration the economic crisis in Spain and have reduced my prices to accommodate. Generally, up to 2 areas at a time can be treated. For example, face and neck or neck and chest, would have different prices. More areas at the same visit are not advised due to the potential toxicity of the numbing cream used prior to the treatment. How are fractional CO2 laser treatments performed? You need to arrive 1 ½ hours before your treatment. The treatment area will be cleaned and numbing cream will be

applied to the area to be treated. We also have our patients take an anti-inflammatory which helps to reduce the discomfort. Then you just relax, read, and listen to music, while the numbing cream takes effect. You will be asked to fill in a consent form. After you numb for about an hour, the numbing gel will be removed. The treatment takes about an hour for a full face and feels a little like a “pins and needles” sensation. A strong stream of cold air (a Zimmer cooler) is blown on the area during the treatment to make it comfortable. The discomfort ranges from mild to moderate (2-4/10). Plan on being in the treatment for 2 ½ hours total. Most people drive to and from their own fractional CO2 laser appointments. But if a relaxant or anti-anxiety tablet is taken you may require someone else to drive after the treatment.

Margis E-Cigarettes

E-Cigarettes provide a new, safer and cheaper alternative to smoking.

Millions of people are now ecig users and successfully kicked the smoking habit E-Cigarettes Versus Tobacco We all know that e-cigs are less dangerous to one’s health, cost far less, don’t produce ash, smell better and don’t inflict the dangers of passive smoking on other people…. scientifically proved.

Media Reaction The media report on E-Cigarettes has spread widely and positively across TV, radio and the press.

E-Liquid There has recently been a concerning trend for some e-cig retailers to mix e-liquid to order in the back of their shop, sometimes even while-you-wait. Its hard to imagine that the appropriate level of hygiene can be maintained in these conditions however well intentioned

Buyer Beware It is not my intention to suggest that Margi’s E-Cigs are the only e-cig suppliers who sell quality goods at a fair price, There are many good suppliers available. What is of concern is the substantial and growing number of e-cig sellers who view the public as a profit bandwagon upon which to ride only while the going is good. Some shockingly poorly manufactured e-cigs are being openly sold by unscrupulous market stall holders and none-specialist outlets. It is often the case that poor quality goods are sold with huge extraordinary profits.

GERMANY ALGERIA

Belo Horizonte

curitiba

One of the most historic venues in Brazilian football and called home by Atletico Mineirão and Cruzeiro, the 57,483 capacity Estadio Mineirão has undergone a complete overhaul prior to hosting six matches including one semi-final.

Ever since renovation works were complete in June 1999, the historic Estadio Joaquim Americo better know as the Arena da Baixada - has been considered one of Brazil’s most modern and best appointed stadiums, with a capacity of 40,000.

brasilia

fortaleza

Few Brazilian cities can match the capital Brasilia when it comes to architecture, the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha is an arena with seating for 68,009 spectators, making it the second largest of the stadiums hosting matches at the 2014 World Cup.

As well as having its capacity increased to 58,704, the revamped stadium will boast an underground car park with 1,900 spaces, executive boxes, a VIP area and a media centre. A new roof now covers all its tiers, including the pitchside ring of seating.

cuiaba

manaus

Especially built for Brazil 2014 when it will host four matches, the Arena Pantanal will boast a capacity of 42,968 and will occupy the site where the Estadio Jose Fragelli used to be. The site’s air and soil quality is constantly monitored.

Though not a traditional hotbed of Brazilian football, Manaus is sure to be popular with fans attanding the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil - thanks to the unique character of the Area Amazonia, formerly the Estadio Vivaldao.

Rising up on the site is the Estadio de Dunas stadium project with its name relating to the sand dunes that are one of the most impessive natural attractions in the Natal region.

With room for 42,819 spectators and constructed by means of a partnership between the public and private sector, the Arena Pernambucho now hosts Nautico’s games - following the agreement reached with the club in October 2011.

Once the largest stadium in the world, packing in crowds of up to 200,000, the Maracana now has a reduced capacity of 73,531 for Brazil 2014. It remains, nevertheless, the country’s biggest football ground.

Richard Way, Editor of OverseasGuidesCompany. com, publishers of SpainBuyingGuide.com said: “The cap for annual tax free savings in the UK will rise to £15,000 from £11,880, but in reality, savers must ask themselves how much they’re really set to gain from this when the best ISA rates are around 2 per cent. “By comparison, there are investment opportunities in Spain right now that come with bank finance and require down-payments of less than £10,000. Another exciting option could be to purchase a fraction of an apartment or suite in a managed resort or hotel – many come with a guaranteed buyback option and guaranteed rental return. “The strong pound makes investing even more attractive right now – and after all, money in a UK ISA account doesn’t benefit from a weaker euro or dollar!”

The Book Thief “I wanted to tell the book thief that she was one of the few souls that made me wonder what it was like to live. But in the end there were no words. Only peace. The only truth I truly know is that I am haunted by humans.” Based on the book by Australian writer Markus Zusak which was on the New York Times Best Seller List for over 230 weeks. It’s not surprising to learn that Zusak’s parents grew up in Nazi Germany. The book was inspired by two real life events: the bombing of Munich and a teenage boy offering bread to an emaciated Jew being marched through the streets. Additional inspiration came from a tale of a real life book thief in Sydney. The film is closely based on the novel. Directed by Brian Percival and scripted by Michael Petroni, it was filmed in Gorlitz, Saxony, Berlin and Studio Babelsberg, Potsdam, Brandenburg covering the period 1938-1946. Geoffrey Rush plays the kindhearted Hans, adopted father to Liesel. Emily Watson is the nagging wife, Rosa, christened the “thunderstorm always rumbling” by Liesel her adopted daughter played by an incredible French-Canadian actress, just 14 years of age, Sophie Nelisse. This is her second film. The soundtrack is provided by John Williams. The story is narrated by a morality character. If you’ve ever come across Terry Pratchett’s book Mort you’ll understand. It’s not unusual to use a morality character such as Death but it is original to create a persona with compassion: “I make it a policy to avoid the living.” It was also obvious how much he admired Liesel. His presence is threatening and he is always lying in wait:

Film Review

“the bombs were coming thicker now. It’s probably fair to say that no-one was able to serve the Fuhrer as loyally as me.” Liesel Meminger is just nine at the beginning of the film. Abandoned by her father, her mother labelled a Communist and therefore an enemy of the Nazi Germany she was running for her life and was forced to give up her two children, Liesel and Werner. Unfortunately fate stepped in and Werner died on the train journey to Molching. He was buried at the side of the railway track and what is interesting is that the funeral director dropped a book and an illiterate Liesel picked it up and hid it inside her coat. This is the first of many books that she steals. It is certainly not the most engaging of books for a young child and Hans is bemused when he tells her it is called The Gravedigger’s Handbook which he reads to her religiously every night, teaching her how to read. She cherishes the book and this is where her love of reading came from. In her new home, Liesel befriends “the yellow-haired boy” Rudy Steiner who is always teasing her for a kiss. They would have started dating had it not been for the war and probably settled down together. “I want to grow up before I die.” But alas, that wasn’t to be. Max Vandenburg comes to the Hubermanns desperate to escape from the Nazi regime, arresting Jews and sending them to concentration camps, to their deaths. His father had saved Hans’ life during the first world war so it was Hans’ way of repaying some of this debt. It was dangerous and the family could have been killed for hiding a Jew. Liesel grew close to Max. When he first arrives he clutches a book and like Liesel’s odd book, Max’s prized possession is Mein Kampf which was Hitler’s autobiography. For Xmas he painted

over all of the pages and encouraged her to write her life story. He tells her that words are life. When he becomes seriously ill she steals books and reads to him to keep his soul alive. He recovers but has to leave when the family become fearful for their lives: “You’ll always be able to find me in your words. That’s where I’ll live on.” During street parades the Nazis encouraged everyone to burn their books, supposedly marking the end of plutocrats, communists and Jews. Liesel was mortified at having to burn a book and at the end of the parade when everyone has left she returns to the bonfire to retrieve one of the smouldering books. It’s The Invisible Man by H.G.Wells. Her initial affiliation to the Hitler Youth Movement with Rudy becomes distasteful as she sees through the indoctrination and cruelty. When speaking of her role in hiding Max and willing him to stay alive she tells Hans: “We were just being people. That’s what people do.” At 14 years of age she is able to understand humanity and compassion. As a character, Liesel is an inspiration to others having tolerated endless suffering and loss. Her world falls apart and her saving grace was her love of reading which then became translated into writing her autobiography so that all those precious lives which were lost can live on through her precious words. “One small fact. You are going to die. No one lives forever. sorry to be such a spoiler. My advice is, when the time comes, don’t panic. It doesn’t seem to help.” Be warned, it is a tear-jerker but it’s good to be reminded that the Germans suffered intolerable losses just like their allies. With great wars like this one, you can’t expect any happy endings can you? War kills. Enough said.

pause for thought Sadly, in my role with the Church, I necessarily meet many people grieving the loss of loved ones. In the past few weeks, it has twice been remarked that the deceased had just heard that, contrary to all previous assurances, their home here in Spain had been ruled illegal. Of course it’s unlikely that this news had been the direct cause of that person’s death, but I’d guess that the resultant shock may well have been in part at least, a contributory factor. How tragic indeed is the uncertainty of life here, where laws and their application seem to change overnight, with little apparent reason or explanation and often look to protect the ‘con-man’ rather than those they so readily deceive. So one of those recently bereaved in this way protested that ‘trust’ seems to have become a capital offence in Spain! So what hope or comfort can be offered in such circumstances? Little practically, I’m sorry to say; but I can try to move focus to a wider perspective, from the comparatively brief time spent here on Earth to that of eternity, where God is utterly consistent and unchanging; where a home can be guaranteed without any fear of its legality, or of subsequently having its license revoked. For God’s laws are eternal and carved deep on each of our consciences. And whilst we may frequently fail, loving and serving self rather than God or our neighbours, yet He continually offers complete forgiveness to anyone ready to trust Him. So, in his letter to the Church in Thessalonica, St Paul writes “God will bring with him at his coming all who have died, who trusted in Jesus”. No conditions of being religious. No demand for leading a good life or ‘doing the best you can’. Just a requirement to trust – no longer a capital offence, but the guarantee for a home hereafter. DIGITAL HEARING OPEN DAY THURSDAY 3RD JULY

2014 Has seen the launch of the Unitron Pro 2 hearing aids incorporating 360- degree speech detection and also the launch of the Quantum Micro mini, and Digital Hearing at Quesada is holding an open day to enable everyone to have the opportunity to experience this latest technology for themselves. Unitron Pro 2 360-degree speech detection Speech zone 2 can now pinpoint speech anywhere within the 360 degrees of a circle and respond intelligently to provide superior results for hearing speech in noise. Activated when speech is present in a noisy environment, its sensors rapidly determine if speech is coming from the front, the back, the left or the right side of the listener. Speech zone 2 then automatically selects a binaural or asymetric synchronised microphone strategy to ensure the best possible speech understanding in noise. The ability to target speech from any direction is made possible by the next generation of binaural spacial processing. No appointment necessary •Experience your mobile phone played directly into your ears •Hear the television played directly into your ears •Use a remote microphone to hear with total clarity in any noise. Quantum Micro mini Also take the opportunity to see the Quantum Micro mini hearing aid in your own hands (- you can’t see it in your ears!). These new Micro mini aids sit deeper in the ear canal, making them almost invisible to the outside world. Seeing (or not seeing) is believing!

a Chinese shop recently in search of a fly swat, I came across a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of bras in every colour known to dye manufacturers. It was a case of never mind the quality, feel the width; the sizing labels were, of course, no help at all, but at 1.80€ each I thought it worth taking an educated guess. I celebrated my success with tea and cake, but as I am an airhead I left the shop minus my shopping - 2 red bras and 2 fly swats. Eventually remembrance kicked in, and having exhaustively searched the house, I returned to the scene of my amnesia. At my approach Ellie, who could model as Bambi’s even cuter sister, picked up her order pad, expecting my first sentence to contain the words Tea, Pot, and Large. However, I leant forward and enquired confidentially, ‘Have you taken to wearing red bras?’ Her hands flew

protectively to her chest. Her eyes, as blue as forget-me-nots on a May morning, registered innocence more surely than any polygraph. Elliot, sensing danger, fled to clean an already immaculate table, while Carolyn, aware of a disturbance in the Force, emerged from the kitchen, spatula in hand. I explained, hoping that someone had found the plastic bag containing the necessary implements for fly extermination and frontal uplift, and that they were safely awaiting collection behind the Scrumptious counter. So, if there is anyone out there who arrived home and found themselves the unexpected owner of 2 fly swats and 2 red bras, please could they return them to Scrumptious in Albox, from where I will collect them. And if you have got any sense, sit down and treat yourself to the temptations on offer – it will make the journey more than worthwhile! PS. The fly swats are for josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk swatting flies.

Welcome To the Twilight Zone

World shattering ideas and the best wheezes, always seem to pop into my head in that half sleep/half wakeful no-man’s land. And I know that it’s either drag myself out of my comfortable bed and make notes quickly, thereby upsetting my lovely lady by switching on the light, or go back to sleep in the knowledge that come morning, they will have melted away like snow in Barbados and be lost forever. And so it was last night, when a vision of the Queens Corgi’s appeared uninvited into my almost comatose head. Don’t ask me why, nothing royal had crossed my mind that day, neither had dogs or anything remotely doggy. But there they were, sitting side by side, just looking at me expectantly. I was determined not to get out of bed and reach for my note book and threw them a mental stick to chase, but they were having none of it and just sat there with lolloping tongues, willing me to come up with some Corgi type tales. And although I did manage to resist the idea of dragging myself to the computer, I spent the next God knows how many hours – fully awake – allowing all sorts of scenarios to troupe in bizarre procession through the twilight world of my imagination. All it needed to recall every eccentric detail this morning, was the trigger word ‘Corgi’. I’ve always thought that it

would be a real eye opener to be a fly on the wall inside the royal apartments, to catch glimpses of Her Majesty and Phil totally relaxed and away from the glare of the media. After all they are just two flesh and blood people like the rest of us when you get right down to it. So there they are in their lynge, in dressing gowns and wearing Homer Simpson slippers. The Queen is knitting a cardy for baby George as she catches up with Emmerdale on telly, and the Duke is nodding off - a whiskey and soda on the table beside him - as one of the Corgi’s lets one go. Now I’m sorry, they might be royalty, but dogs is dogs and they all have the same disgusting habits and peculiarities. The Queen is the first to notice the change of atmosphere and naturally does what any woman would do, and that’s blame her partner. “Is that you Phillip?” she retorts, wrinkling her nose in distaste. “What? . . . no it’s that bloody mutt Candy” He observes, kicking the nearest dog. It has to be noted that in fact not all the Queens dogs are pure bred Corgis, Candy and Vulcan being what are known as Dorgis – a cross between Corgis and Dachshunds - and who can therefore legitimately be referred to as mutts. And as if by way of confirmation, Candy lifts her head and with her whole front end doing a ‘U’ turn, she sniffs the grey cloud hovering around her rear end and delivers the surprised look that all dogs give at times like this and which basically says: “Was that me? . . . Really?” A footman enters carrying a tray of cocoa for HM; another

Scotch for HRH, and a plate of custard creams. As he turns to leave, one of the Dorgi’s/ Corgi’s, attaches itself to his left leg in a death lock as it tries to achieve what Mick Jagger apparently could not, back in 1965 and proceeds to vigorously hump his calf. But Royal footmen are impeccably trained and made of stern stuff, so pretending not to notice, and gathering as much dignity as possible, he about turns and with head held high exits with immaculate decorum, complete with a panting dog super-glued to his leg. You have to assume that the royal hounds have the run of the house, so it must be a nightmare making sure that little wet messages and embarrassing Richard the Thirds are cleared away as quickly and discretely as possible. Perhaps there is a dog flap in the drawbridge, so that they have easy access to the gardens, but whose job is it to clean up after them? (No of course they don’t have a drawbridge at Buck House; that’s just me being silly). I can’t see Her Majesty carrying poop bags around with her, so some poor servant must have the responsibility for this distasteful task. And how would he or she have got the job. I mean how would it have been advertised? That’s a question for another sleepless night. These then were the musings of my tired and hyper active imagination – and I haven’t even started on Prince Phillip’s ferrets, or the palace parrots with their colourful collection of ribald songs, courtesy of the Duke’s coaching. I should really get out more...

without support

Bosom support has always been a matter close to my heart. Finding a bra that fits, is comfortable, and is pleasing to the marital eye has always proved difficult, especially here in Spain. I have baulked at the mountainous piles of bras on offer in the markets; a bra is a garment that needs consideration, reference to the size label, and trying on; they can not be bought off the peg and on a whim, while jostling for stall space with 2 South American ladies pushing baby buggies and an amply proportioned Spanish granny. Thus I have resorted to Lesley, who can provide proper facilities, and bras with a recognisable size label. However, entering

alqueria The Man in the Remitroot Suit

Remitroot has been drunk, turned into bricks and paint, used as a rocket propellant and wrapped around pipes for lagging. Until now however no-one has worn it. No-one would have worn the stuff if it hadn’t been for the creative stupidity of Arián Pérez. Sr Pérez has very little in the way of formal training in any of the sciences but this didn’t stop him dabbling in the most obscure branches of research. For some reason unknown to the population as a whole and probably to himself he began experimenting with extruded fibres. The raw material was a goo made from the leaves of the Remitroot plant, goat’s droppings and saliva from a carefully selected Alquerian Newt. The process involves heating the mixture to within one degree of Remitroot’s critical temperature, above which the leaves explode. A measure of Arián Pérez’s work-rate was the number of explosions that occurred during the working day. Black faced and hair smouldering he would sit twitching at the bar of the La Casa Devante scribbling in a dog-eared note book. He would make alterations to complex formulae he didn’t understand and seek advice from bewildered drinkers. Only Loco Paco offered any guidance which Pérez put into practice. This is a measure of the man’s intellect, for Loco Paco’s sanity has been the subject of debate ever since he reared a Saharan Dung Beetle from a pup. Unlikely as it may have seemed to the good people of Alqueria Pérez succeeded in his experiments. On a worn out hand loom he wove a cloth made from his Remitroot based extruded fibres. The

suit which was subsequently made from the cloth was a remarkable garment. It resisted dirt, wear and the fading effects of sunlight. It was lightweight but warm while being cool in elevated temperatures. It was a breakthrough in textile technology, well it would have been apart from three disadvantages. Remitroot had long been known as an Aphrodisiac. The process of producing the cloth had enhanced this attribute. Anyone wearing the garment would be overcome by a carnal urge which can be very disruptive on public transport or during religious observances. Manuela had several items of intimate apparel made from the cloth but no-one noticed any difference in her behaviour. Another drawback of the material was its ability to resist stains, it also resisted dyeing. The only colour possible was a muddy grey with a bile green hue. The biggest problem of all was its inherent instability, it dissolved when it came in contact with alcohol. The wonder material was only suitable for colour-blind, celibate, teetotallers a rare commodity in Alqueria.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

Lo Marabu Golf Society Eurogolf (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Lo Romero on 26th June 2014. This month’s event was the annual Captain versus ViceCaptain Challenge which is held every year in June at the superb Lo Romero course. The course was in good condition despite the low water levels on some of the water hazards This year 24 players took part on the 12 man a side challenge with the best 10 scores for each team to count. This event is usually extremely tight but not this year as the Captains team took the honours by 298 points to 258 points. There were a few individual prizes which were as follows: Best Individual score – Terry Drayton – 35 points Dog of a Day – Dave Bensley

(Defeated Captain) Nearest the pins – Drayton, Farnell, Robinson and Fantom. We returned to the newly opened Marabu Lounge for a welcoming meal provided by Dave, Julie and the team and our thanks go to them for the continued support. Huge amounts of humble pie were swallowed as the defeated Vice-Captain presented the winning Captain and his victorious team with a memento of the day. This was the first time for a couple of years that we have played there and the course was in fantastic shape. It was a day for the Ladies in Division 2 with them taking first and second places. Joyce Armstrong winning on 37pts and Jo Murphy just behind in second on 34pts so well done to you both. In the top Division it was our Captain coming out on top with 37pts with Ken Murphy taking second on 34pts so a good day for the Murphy family with Frank also taking a nearest the pin. Match Report 25th June 2014 – Villamartin. 33 members and guests turned out for a Medal competition and once again, the scores were fairly good albeit there was only one player to better his handicap. It has to be said that the course wasn’t in too bad condition, but the bunkers are as useful as torch is to Stevie Wonder. As we know, they are now introducing a ledge to stop the putter being used to get out of the bunkers; the trouble is that they have forgotten to put sand in them. Come on Villamartin, it ain’t rocket science; bunkers are designed to have sand in them. The NTP’s this week were kindly donated

follows: Gold Division 1st I R Pegg 39 points 2nd Pino Perito 38 points 3rd Nico Baken 37 points Silver Division 1st Bob Shorley 37 points 2nd Dave King 36 points 3rd Brian Fenwick 35points Bronze Division Tom Corbett 41 points Cindi Green 38 points Phyllis Venables 38 points Nearest the Pins 5th John Barraclough 15th Pino Perito 11th Phyllis Venables 17th Bill Martin 12th David Gregson Best Front 9: Joy Gray 21, Best Back 9: Dave Nicholls 22 Additional prizes laid on today for the Memorial Trophy were: Best Par 3 Score - Men Stan Low Best Par 3 Score - Ladies Claire Daye-Gretton Best Par 5 Score - Men David Gelsthorpe Best Par 5 Score - Ladies Liz Menzies WINNER OF THE MONTHLY STABLEFORD AND THE FRED THOMPSON/GEORGE WEIR MEMORIAL – TOM CORBETT Football Winners: Once again 9 prizes were paid out. by Ian Parkinson and the recipients of his donation were John Eyre, Mick Kennedy, Shelia Dean and Matthew Taylor. We had 6 guests and the winner of a TMGS towel was A Mahon with a very tidy nett 68, by far the best score of the day. Once again the Silver boys outshone the Gold boys and there were 3 nett scores of 74 and the countback revealed that Per Skarnes would take 4th slot, J Hagart 3rd and the runner-up would be Mick Kennedy. This left the winners spot to be claimed by Alan Rickers who shot a nett 73. The Gold crew scores weren’t as impressive as their Silver counterparts, and it only needed a nett 77 for Bill Starkey to claim 4th spot. A 76 saw Dag Lovas on the rostrum again and this time claiming 3rd place. Steve Higgins scored one shot better with a nett 75 for the runner-up slot and the rostrum was completed with the winner Alan Rixson’s nett 74. This week’s photo is of the Nearest the Pin Winners. Our next game, Wednesday 2nd July 2014 at Las Colinas so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.

Bull Flanagan Golf Society For their recent June meeting 28 Bull Flanagan members headed toward the local 11hole course at Vistabella.

This is a course which is not a favorite for a lot of societies due to the fact that it has only eleven holes. However the course is always in good condition and when playing, if you can avoid the many bunkers which protect most of the greens, then you should be able to score well. The greens were in excellent condition and in most instance very fast which meant players had to take care when putting out. The weather turned out to be excellent and sunny all day but the wind strength increased during the match and this can affect the overall performance of players

not able to adjust for these conditions. It was not surprising to find that most players returned scores in the twenties however four members were able to return scores over 30 with only one player being able to beat the par 73 course.

player managed to take the title on hole 8 and Bill Peters took the prize on the remaining holes 4 and 5.

That member was Barry Grinsell who returned a score of 38 points to take first place followed by two players returning scores of 35 and under count back Bill Peters took second spot with Brian Ead coming in third.

Another excellent days golf was enjoyed by all members and after the golf players returned to the Bull Flanagan to join a boisterous group of ladies in attendance at the pub for a racing day in celebration of racing at Royal Ascot. All the ladies sported an array of decorative head wear and could if they wished have a little flutter on the side.

Winner of the front 9 was Arnold Lynas with 17 points and the back 9 was Steve Edwards also with a score of 17 points. With only 3 par threes it was going to be tight challenge on who would take the prizes for nearest the pin shots. No

The Captain gave an overview of the day’s event and thanked all who turned up to play on what was another successful outing for the Bull Flanagan society. Through the Captain members thanked Chris Stott and all the staff in the normal

manner for the continued hospitality afforded to members by the Bull Flanagan pub especially on a day where the pub was exceptionally busy. The Secretary reported to members that the Anne McGrath Memorial event at Bonalba had raised a total of 3,110-00 euros and everyone who took part was thanked for their continued support. The next meeting is at Altorreal on 18th July and members should check the web site for further details and members were informed of special dates for their diaries including details of the Captains dinner dance which had now been moved from June to the evening of the Captains Day event on 12th of September being held again at Vistabella.

WHITE WATER RAFTING WITH TORRIVIEJA U3A

25’95 €

On Friday 6th June 2014, 48 members of Torrevieja U3A took to the water and got very, very wet.... For the 2nd year, Segura River was the venue for a white water rafting experience. From La Parra to Cieza. The river route and meeting points had been changed from last year only a couple of months back, so because the alterations were unknown we had a bit of an adventure getting there, with the bus driver getting lost and then having to drive brilliantly down some very narrow roads in Cieza. When we eventually arrived at the departure point (La Parra) we were greeted with 5 rafts, breakfast, cold drinks and oh not forgetting 5 very enthusiastic raft crew. Having got kitted out in helmet and

buoyance vest we had a short training session - with great translation by Rosa. We had 5 rafts - 10 persons in 3 and 9 in the other 2. We carried the rafts a short distance to the river only to discover that because of lack of rain this year the level of water was low so the raft had to be pushed, yanked, shoved and sworn at over the pebbles until deeper water was reached.

Then the fun began, splashing, racing, laughing, singing and being bashed by overhead branches. Parts of the river did live up to the name of white water, with bubbling water and a couple of small weirs, but it still wasn’t the Colorado!! After approx. 2 1/2 hours, we reached Cieza where we disembarked and headed for the showers ... and loos ... Lunch was in a typical Spanish restaurant, and a good lunch it was too. A competition had been launched, weeks earlier, for the best dressed swim hat and the judging by Frank and Maggie took place after lunch. There were some fabulously inspired creations and the winner was Liz closely followed by Ken. They walked away with a bottle of cava and chocolates.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY Alicante - 25.06.14

Most people know their way to Alicante now, as this was our second visit this year, but even so negotiating the streets of Alicante Norte in the ‘rush hour’ is always fraught, but a café con leche and tostada is always calming and welcoming especially as it is gratis. There was a full complement of 40 members and guest eager to get going for the stableford competition and also try to improve their eclectic score. This is the second try for the eclectic improvement and there are another two to go, so we should know Alicante quite well by the end of the year. All agreed that the course looked well and the greens were very good but on the slow side, there were, however, some water pools in unexpected places from the rains of the day before. Those in form were: Gold Division: 1st Brian Leys 34pts, 2nd

Harry Wilcock 32pts (c/b) and 3rd George Stuart 32pts Silver Division: 1st Gordon Cobb 33pts (c/b), 2nd Susan Smith 33pts (c/b) and Steve Cosgrove 33pts. Bronze Division: Margaret O’Brien 32pts, 2nd Scott Blair 31pts and 3rd Geoff Dowsett 27pts. NTPs: Barny Barningham hole 3, Brian Coultate holes 6 and 15 and John Dunnion hole 12. John Henderson, Brian Leys, Brian Coultate and Barny Barningham shared the 2s pot. The free game draw was claimed by John Henderson. There is still time to sign up for Chicken and Chips at the Tavern straight after the Villamartin game on the 9th July, this to include partners as well. All details are on the website.
