CHAPLAINCY OF ST PETER & SAINT PAUL (TORREVIEJA)

CHAPLAIN’S VALEDICTORY SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION LOS BALCONES CHURCH CENTRE SUNDAY 20 JULY 2014

On what was a joyous and emotional occasion over 100 members of the various Chaplaincy Church Centre congregations within the Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter and St Paul (Torrevieja) came together to celebrate a special Valedictory Service for their Chaplain, Revd Christopher Scargill. Father Chris was appointed Chaplain in September 2009. The celebration was held at the Chaplaincy’s Los Balcones Church Centre. The Chaplain, Revd Christopher Scargill, who Presided and Preached at the Service was joined by many of the Chaplaincy’s Ministry Team who assisted in the celebration. His wife Sara and son Rob were also able to join us in the celebration too. In his sermon Father Chris reminded people that, just as there is no such thing as a perfect Church, there is no such thing as a perfect Christian. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, but God calls us to work together so that like an orchestra or a sports team we may complement each other. Recalling how his son Rob, as a viola player, had often had some parts to play which were in themselves quite boring, but which were necessary for the total piece, Father Chris stressed that some roles in the church are more prominent than others, but no role is unimportant. He encouraged all the different elements of the chaplaincy to work together for the building up of God’s kingdom amongst the English –speaking community of this part of the

Costa Blanca. After the Service Father Chris was presented with a numbers of gifts from the Chaplaincy Council, Church Centres and the local branch of the Mothers’ Union. After the presentations, much to the joy of the congregation, the combined Chaplaincy Church Centre choirs, lead by Keith Bigg, performed a delightful choral setting rendition of ‘God be with you until we meet again’ Later, in a speech following the presentation of gifts from the chaplaincy, Father Chris commented that though he would not finally be departing for a little while, this farewell service gave him the opportunity to thank the congregations for their support over the last five years and to say a special word of thanks to all his colleagues in the ministry team, without whom keeping on top of everything could have been a nightmare. Father Chris paid tribute to his colleagues from the other Christian traditions and to all he had learned from them, singling out particularly Father Helge Pettersson for all his help and advice over the last few years. In closing, he thanked Cassie Hopkins, Andrew Briant and Derek King and all the past chaplaincy wardens and encouraged everyone to give them all possible support during the coming months. Although this valedictory service was an important milestone on the Chaplaincy time-line, Father Chris will continue his Ministry in the Chaplaincy until he returns to the UK later in the Summer - when he takes up his further Ministry in the Parish of St Thomas (St Anne’s on the Sea) (Lancashire). Following the Service the congregation took the opportunity to continue their fellowship with refreshments in the grounds of the Los Balcones Church Centre.

News First charity shop to open in Gran Alacant to support rescued horses

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has opened its brand new Gran Alacant charity store next week, offering good quality second hand furniture, clothing and other items to residents of the urbanisation for the first time.

All money raised at the store, and the Rojales centre’s network of six other shops across the Alicante province, will help cover the feeding and care costs of more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse and neglect. Rescue centre founders Sue and Rod Weeding said they had long wanted to bring a charity store to the Gran Alacant community and finally found the perfect location last month, with help from Karen at Gran Alacant Homefinders. The new store that is situated behind Dialprix supermarket and opposite the bowls club opened on July 28th. “The shops are the bloodline of the centre and really keep us going,” Sue said. “The locals have really rallied around us and we now have a fantastic group of volunteers staffing the shop, although we are still looking for more

help.” “We collect larger furniture donations and also offer a delivery service for furniture purchased in our stores using our new delivery van thanks to a kind donation by long-time supporter Kate Jansen. Before her donation earlier this year, Sue and Rod had only their horse trailer to rely on. “There were actually three or four times where Rod and I were collecting donated furniture when we received a call from the police about a horse in danger and had to unload all the furniture to go and rescue the horse,” Sue said. “It just wasn’t a workable situation and we are very grateful for Kate’s help.” Please contact Sue on 652 021 980 for more information about volunteering or to make donations. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is grateful for any donations of good quality furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to help stock their charity stores. The public is invited to meet the centre’s many rescued animals each Sunday from 1pm-4pm. Entrance is free and guided tours begin at 2pm. Tasty food and refreshments are available in the garden café. There is often live music also. Bar, restaurant and business owners are also welcome to stage charity events to support the centre. Please contact Sue on 652 021 980 or email info@easyhorsecare.net. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For more details and directions to the centre, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.

Inheritance Planning Save Money In The UK And Abroad

The British nation pays an extra and avoidable £530million in inheritance tax (IHT) each year according to recent analysis, which should be a warning to everyone - but in particular expats - to look closely at how their estate is set up. Richard Way, Editor at OverseasGuidesCompany.com said: “The staggering ‘over-payment’ is on account of many UK residents not holding life assurance in trust, which makes it liable to IHT if it means the value of the deceased’s estate exceeds the nil rate band.

“Brits on the verge of moving abroad and those already living somewhere sunny are urged to check exactly where they stand with inheritance. For example, under which jurisdiction, or jurisdictions, will inheritance law and tax be levied? Typically, you could be fined for not paying inheritance tax due within a set period after the date of death. Researching and protecting your estate now, by talking to professionals, will save time and heartache in the future.” Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange. com

Spanish employment figures are contracts, not people admits government

The government has admitted finally that yes, when they talk about people in employment, they’re actually talking bollocks – they mean employment contracts and so anyone with two jobs is being counted twice. The admission came after a tabled question in Congress by the UPyD party asking for clarification. What this means is that when the government talks about there being 16,950,000 people working in Spain, they actually mean there are

16,950,000 active work contracts under the general labour scheme. It’s a not so subtle difference. How many of those people actually have two or more part time jobs? Nobody knows, there are no official stats. Which is why Eurostat (the EU) says countries aren’t supposed to do it this way, as the only reason for doing it is to pull the wool over the eyes of the populace. It actually gets worse. Unemployment dropped by about 1% in the first quarter of this year. TO TABARCA ISLAND WITH JOSE’ Way back in March 2013, I put a few words together under the “Barnes Bulletin” tag, of Saturday visits, during the summer months, to the pirate island of Tabarca, and being shown around by tour guide Jose’ Gilarte. Well, a number of Sol Times readers, must have made a note, because last week, I received a couple of e-mails, asking had I visited, and what was it like? At the time, no I hadn’t, but a swift telephone call to Jose’, and I was booked on the 11.00 hrs. sailing , last Saturday. It was a full boat that made it’s way out of the calm waters of the harbour at Torrevieja, and, turning to port (Left, not the drink), headed out into a choppy Mediterranean, direction Tabarca Island. I will not dwell on events, but a number of passengers had a feeling that perhaps it might not have been such a good idea to have had that Full English Breakfast! Just over 80 minutes later, our good Captain nudged the trusty craft, against the harbour wall, where we dropped down the gangplank, to follow tour guide Jose’, into the pirate village. Arriving at one of the ancient gateways through the defensive wall, a waiter arrived with trays of soft drinks and sangria. Most welcome. Following Jose’ our guide, we visited defensive positions along the wall of the fort, shown the entrance to a haunted 100 meter smugglers tunnel, which runs under the village, dungeons, churches, and village squares, where shelter from a blistering sun, and cool water

from deep wells, could be found. It was soon time for lunch. Food fit for any King followed, accompanied by unlimited, or so it seemed, soft and alcoholic, beverages. Jose’ explained to his party, that we now had free time to wander the island (Must take the old swimming togs next time), but be ready to board our boat back to Torrevieja at 18.00 Hrs.. After a wander around, and buying a “Pirate” tee shirt (Yes, I know) from one of the many souvenir / craft shops, along the narrow streets, there was just time for a “Complimentary” coffee, nice touch, before making our way to the harbour. Our 18.00 Hrs, boat, headed out into what I might call, a “Challenging” sea, but this time, enjoyed by all fellow shipmates. There is much history to Tabarca, as I touched on in the article last year, but in answer to my readers, yes, it is certainly worth a visit. Contact Jose’ on 653 10 77 91 or email on: josegilarte@hotmail.es Oh, and don’t forget to ask about Captain Jack Ward, who came from the U.K., and was oft said “ Beyond doubt, the greatest scoundrel that ever sailed from the Port of London” Well, shiver me timbers and splice the whatnot!

Advice on choosing and using contact lenses

Contact lenses are very popular for people of all ages and with a range of lifestyles, however people can worry that they will not be right for them, or simply never have thought about wearing them because they aren’t sure how to use them. Francisco Manuel Jurado Alonso from Specsavers Opticas in Guardamar del Segura advises that the advances in technology over the last five years have transformed contact lenses and means that now almost everyone can use them comfortably and safely. However, the type of lenses you choose must be the right ones for your particular lifestyle and take into account any conditions you may have. Here is some advice on things to look out for and consider – Make sure your eyes are healthy – Before trying contact lenses for the first time, have a thorough eye test to identify any issues which may make contact lens wear more difficult or more risky, so you can choose correctly. For example, if you have dry eyes then more hydrating lens systems really help, or if you have diabetes, you should take particular care with hygiene and handling and choose a lens with good oxygen transmission properties, as a corneal abrasion may take longer to heal and any infections may take longer to clear than in contact lens wearer without diabetes. -MOREIdentify your particular visual need – An eye test will give you and your optician the latest information on your eyesight and any particular needs which the contact lens needs to compensate for. New advances in technology have developed multi-focal and vari-focal contact lenses which allow people who are both short and long sighted to see perfectly without having to wear two different lenses. Almost everyone can now use lenses, you simply need to correctly identify your need and match the right lens to your vision and lifestyle. Match your lens to your lifestyle – The type of lens you choose will depend on your lifestyle and the frequency

of wear. The daily disposable lenses are the best in terms of hygiene and convenience, we recommend daily disposables for irregular use and monthly lenses for daily use. There are innovative options which can make it much easier to use contact lenses, like the first flat-packed lens which can fit in your wallet, or lenses you can sleep in if you tend to forget to take them out before bed. Be sure that the lenses fit the eye properly, as this will be uncomfortable no matter what lens you choose. Keep them clean - Once you have chosen the right lens for you, make sure you keep them really clean to avoid any infections. The daily disposable lenses are fresh every day and so they are the most hygienic choice and you don’t have to worry about keeping them clean. If you are using monthly lenses, make sure you use the proper solutions to keep them clean and never use tap water, especially not hot tap water, it can contain bacteria which can be very damaging to your eye. Follow the instructions – Read the instructions carefully and make sure you follow them properly in order to avoid complications and make sure you are replacing them as frequently as necessary. If you continue using lenses longer than you should, then the porous surface of the lens can get filled up with deposits which stop the flow of oxygen and can cause allergic reactions. Older lenses also dry out, become less comfortable and the deposits can create ulcers in the cornea which can impair vision, cause red eye and infections. Specsavers Opticas offer contact lens health checks, lifestyle advice and also a free trial so you can make sure that the lenses suit you before you buy. these tips in mind: - I dentify the activities that occur in each room (reading, food preparation, hobby work, grooming, laundry, homework, etc.). - I dentify the mood or ambiance that you want to create in each space. - I dentify any decorative elements you wish to emphasize, such as artwork or wall textures. - I dentify areas with dark wall colors and finishes. These areas absorb more light than those with lighter finishes, so supplemental lighting may be required.

difficult to cope with the pain. You should seek immediate medical help if your back pain is accompanied by: • fever of 38ºC (100.4ºF) or above • unexplained weight loss • swelling in the back • constant back pain that doesn’t ease after lying down • pain in your chest or high up in your back • pain down your legs and below the knees • loss of bladder or bowel control • inability to pass urine • numbness around your genitals, buttocks or back passage • pain that is worse at night These are known as ‘red flag symptoms’ and could be a sign of something more serious. Top 10 tips for a healthy back. 1. Exercise your back regularly. Walking, swimming (especially backstroke) and using exercise bikes are all excellent ways to strengthen your back muscles. 2. Always bend your knees and your hips, not your back. 3. Never twist and bend at the same time. 4. Always lift and carry objects close to your body. 5. Try to carry larger loads in a rucksack and avoid sling bags. 6. Maintain a good posture. Avoid slumping in your chair, hunching over a desk or walking with your shoulders hunched. 7. Use a chair with a backrest. Sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest. Change how you sit every few minutes. 8. Quit smoking. It is thought that smoking reduces the blood supply to the discs between the vertebrae and this may lead to degeneration of these discs. 9. Lose any excess weight. 10. Choose a mattress suited to your height, weight, age and sleeping position.

Sun

Safety Everyone loves the sun but make sure you enjoy it safely. Make sure friends and siblings use sun protection too! It’s a fact: Overexposure to the sun can result in skin cancer later in life. What are your family’s risks from exposure to powerful UV rays? Consider these facts and statistics. The Dangers of UV Exposure You can sunburn even on a cloudy day. On average, children get 3 times more exposure than adults. Concrete, sand, water, and snow reflect 85% to 90% of the sun’s UV rays. Depletion of Earth’s ozone continues to increase your exposure to UV rays. Skin Cancer In some parts of the world, melanoma is increasing at rates faster than any other cancer. More than 1.2 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the US. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, kills one person every hour. One blistering sunburn can double a child’s lifetime risk of developing skin cancer.

reasons to drink (lots of) water

Any doctor or health guru will tell you that drinking water is always important to keep your mind, body, and even soul in tip-top shape. But no other time of the year makes water and hydration more essential than during the summer months. The unusually high (and, nowadays, often unbearable) temperature makes everyone perspire and want to switch on the A/C. Heat waves dehydrate and often cause heat-induced nausea and heat exhaustion. Water can help alleviate the summer burn and packs many more benefits. Not a fan of tasteless drinks? You can add a squirt of lemon or lime, a few leaves of fresh mint, or a slice of cucumber or orange.

Drinking water helps your body flush out toxins when you perspire and urinate. This reduces your chances of getting kidney stones and urinary tract infection (UTI).

2. Cures headaches Headaches are commonly caused by dehydration. Water is a natural remedy for relieving headaches and nausea.

3. Helps digestion It’s natural to enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities! The Sun Safety Alliance (SSA) encourages you to be safe by following these sun-safety tips year-round to help prevent serious skin damage—and possibly skin cancer—later! Keep in mind the sun is strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Wear clothing that’s dark and tightly woven. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Remember that UV rays bounce off sand, snow, concrete, and water. Do not use sun tanning beds. Keep very young children out of the sun. Sunscreens need to be applied liberally and evenly over all exposed areas. Apply a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or higher whenever you’re outdoors. To achieve adequate UV protection you should use products that provide broad spectrum protection, which means protection against both UVB and UVA rays. For broad spectrum protection, look for products that provide an SPF of at least 15 and contain ingredients like Avobenzone (Parsol 1789) or zinc oxide. For children, the SSA recommends sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen before going outdoors, reapply often. Reapply sunscreen after swimming, perspiring & toweling off. Provide complete sunscreen coverage for your skin (including neck, ears and lips!). For people with thin or thinning hair, apply sunscreen to the scalp as well. And remember stay in the shade whenever possible!

A study found that participants who drink 5 or more glasses of water a day have a much lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease compared to those who drink less than two glasses a day. This is because dehydration worsens heart attack risk factors like blood viscosity. According to WaterforWork. co.uk, drinking water also helps prevent large bowel cancer by diluting toxic compounds and speeding up the passage of stools to shorten contact of carcinogens (cancerc a u s i n g substances) with the b o w e l lining. braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. A question that seems to be cropping up more and more is one about bandwidth. To be more precise, the bandwidth relating to internet TV. It has been a while since we discussed what bandwidth is but as that was some time ago, maybe a short reprise is in order. Bandwidth is the rate at which data can come down the wires to you. I know that this is an over simplification, but as a place to start I’m hoping that it is a good one. In other articles I have tried to help you to understanding just how data is transferred – in packets rather than a ‘stream’ of 0’s and 1’s, but that these packets of information when coming down to you, create the illusion of a flowing stream. If you can remember your school Physics lessons (remember when it was Physics, Chemistry and Biology instead of just ‘Science’?) when you were taught that where air is ‘spongy’ and be compressed or expanded, water had a much more dense molecular structure and didn’t like being compressed? Well, you can imagine the data stream that makes up ‘Eastenders’ or any other program, being the same! My favourite analogue is one of water coming down a hose pipe from a tank or a pump. When it trickled down the hose, it trickles out of the end. When it comes down with greater force, it gushes out, but it will reach a point when no matter how much pressure the pump generates or how great the weight of water is in the tank, the pressure in the pipe can’t increase without the pipe splitting! The idea behind data transfer is the same, but without a split pipe! Later on I will refer you back to this point because it is extremely important. The next part of this

article has to do with commerce, or to be more accurate, the cost of renting webspace. Everything in this world has a price apart from humility and compassion (and there is precious little of either!). Webspace is a commodity just like everything else and has a price. Websites charge for 2 things – the amount of space you can have (makes sense really) and the amount of data that they send out to anyone that looks at a website or downloads anything from their servers (a computer dedicated to storing your websites). This second cost is just the same monthly internet access costs that you have, but in their case, the bills are much higher! I have seen charges as low as 2.99€ and as high as 75€ per month and still have limits as to how much information can be transferred! Now you know this, it is easier to see that websites can only stream a certain amount of information to you. Also video has many time more information than audio but together they gobble masses of bandwidth per second. When 10 people are watching ‘Corrie’ then there will be no problem, but when 1000 people are watching it, there has to be a certain amount of sharing going on. When million’s of people are watching dozens of channels all coming from the same site, then this sharing becomes a problem! Next week I will continue this article by including ‘real world’ examples to try to explain what the actual problems are with the hope that next time your internet TV is ‘buffering’ you will be able to be a little kinder to your small black box. So until then I will be at Jack’s Bar in Albox for my usual Friday afternoon computer clinic, but can also be contacted at the number or email address below.

‘Bomber’ Harris

Arthur Harris was born in 1892; his parents didn’t think him clever enough to go to Eton as his brothers had before, so gave him the choice of joining the army or going to the colonies. He chose the latter and went to Rhodesia, successfully trying his hand at gold mining and tobacco farming. The small matter of the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 was a defining point for Harris and he first joined a Rhodesian regiment. In 1915 he returned to Britain joining the Royal Flying Corps which was then part of the British Army. In his Sopwith Camel he shot down five enemy

Lost and, not, found!

We spend, on average, just over a year of our lives looking for things that we’ve lost? Now that’s a long time, but it’s the things that we lose that fascinate me. Airports have reported that in any one week around 12000 lap tops are left lying around in departure lounges. How do people manage to forget their lap top? A cuddly toy I can understand, maybe even a kindle if you’re reading it before boarding, but a whole lap top? Well, that’s quite a feat. The most commonly lost items include things like nail clippers, sunglasses and mobile phones. Well, yes I can see how anyone could easily lose any of these and not realise. But there are some things that really take some explaining. I’d be willing to bet that you’ve never lost a bridge for example. It’s been done! There’s a town in the Czech Republic that accidentally misplaced a 10 ton bridge. I can see by the look in your eyes that you don’t believe me, but really, it’s true. The town woke up one morning and it was gone. People looked everywhere, as you do, but couldn’t find it. To be fair, they hadn’t actually lost it, it had been stolen, but nevertheless, isn’t that just a bit embarrassing when a group of chaps come along, bold as brass, and dismantle your bridge overnight? Even more embarrassing, it’s not the first time. A few years previously a railway company noticed that there was something not quite right about a stretch of their railway. On careful inspection and after a lengthy consultation process, they came to the conclusion that the bridge had been stolen. Another example of the fleet footedness of organisations in a crisis! To make matters worse, the company said that they thought the bridge had been taken for, “personal use”. If you know an avid bridge collector who has, amongst their exhibits, a 4 ton railway bridge, give the authorities a nudge-you may be in for a reward. Maybe we could all take advice from someone called Professor Solomon. He has come up with a 10 point plan for finding things; absolute load of tosh of course, but one of his suggestions is that we sit and meditate about what’s lost and its whereabouts will come to us. I know, let’s all meditate about common sense, maybe then some people will find it-finally! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

planes and ended the war a Major. Harris witnessed the futility and slowness of trench warfare and thought that aerial bombing was a more efficient way of doing things. Harris stayed in the forces after the war making Squadron Leader in the newly formed Royal Air Force. He served in the British Empires troubled hotspots; Mesopotamia, Persia, Palestine and the North West Frontier in India where locals rudely fought against their imperial masters. Exciting new devices were used such as delayed action bombs and poison gas. Some of the top brass resigned in protest at the use of these inhumane weapons but Harris simply stated that ‘the only thing the Arab understands is a heavy hand!’ Stationed in Palestine in 1936 Harris suggested that a 500lb bomb dropped on each of the troublesome villages would satisfactorily solve the problem of any revolting Arabs.

He rose through the ranks becoming Air vice Marshall. For a man thought not clever enough by his parents, Harris set up the RAF’s night training programme and wrote a paper on the role RAF would play in event of a major war. By the start of WW2 Harris was Deputy Chief of Air Staff. Bombing was not yet part of Britain’s war strategy as navigational skills were not up to long flying missions and less than 1 bomb in 10 landed within 5 miles of the intended targets. Things changed in 1942 when Harris became commander in chief of Bomber Command. Harris had studied German bombing tactics from the Spanish Civil War and correctly reasoned that mass destruction of civilian targets would hasten the end of the war. A Professor Lindemann thought the same, suggesting to Churchill that ‘area’ or carpet bombing of cities would put a huge strain on enemy resources due to the subsequent repairs needed and also cause a massive drop in morale. Men and machinery would also be diverted from the frontline to defend cities. Thus the term ‘total war’ came into

existence and these ideas were quickly put into use by ‘Bomber’ Harris. The first ever 1000 bomber raid took place over two nights at the end of May 1942; Cologne was targeted with 1400 tonnes of mostly incendiaries dropped. 2500 fires were started causing massive damage. 18 months previously the Luftwaffe had tried the same in the Blitz but with much less effect. Harris also gained another nickname, ‘butcher’ as he used statistics to estimate potential Allied losses. 43 planes were lost and it was deemed a success. A year Hamburg was attacked in the same way, nicknamed the Hiroshima of Germany as 10 square miles of the city was obliterated. These attacks severely weakened Germany however ‘Bomber’ Harris will also be remembered as the man who destroyed the beautiful medieval city of Dresden in February 1945, in the dying days of the war. Churchill wrote a month later ‘The destruction of Dresden remains a serious query against the conduct of Allied bombing!’

Declared a ‘Monument of Historical and Artistic Value’, Guadalest Valley is situated approx 25km inland from Benidorm along the CV-70 road, just over 1 hour from Alicante. It’s surrounded by the Aitana, Serella & Xorta Mountains. Guadalest is of Islamic origin, and is the site of several ancient castles, the remains of which can still be seen today - although earthquakes and battles during the early 18th Century have reduced these castles to little more than shells. The castle village which is reached through a tunnel,

is in the most spectacular location which is high up on a pinnacle, and carved out of a mountain top. It has many little craft and souvenir shops, several cafes and museums. Peñon de La Alcalá is a tower which rises high above the village and watches over the valley below. The river Guadalest flows through the area and has been dammed to form a spectacular a reservoir below the town. You can take a little tour around the castle for a few euros. This is a must see for visitors on the Costa Blanca. Source: http://www.tripadvisor.com/

Kids’ summer holiday safety suit launched

An eye-catching safety suit to protect children from bumps and bruises has been created by the St John’s Ambulance charity. But before parents rush out to buy one, it is actually part of a campaign against so-called ‘cotton wool culture’ - the over-protection of children. As the school holidays begin, the first aid charity is calling for millions of parents across the country to learn first aid instead of wrapping their children in cotton wool. It has launched a spoof film, ‘Safety Suit’, to encourage parents to pick up potentially life-saving skills online, so they can let their children play outside with peace of mind. Sue Killen, CEO at St John

Ambulance, said: “Safety Suit is a funny film with a serious message: you don’t need to wrap your children in cotton wool to protect them. “Parents who learn first aid gain the peace of mind to let their children enjoy everything childhood has to offer, as well as the knowledge to look after them, whatever happens. “Young people should be able to enjoy an exciting, carefree summer - just taking a few minutes to learn some skills on our website will help make that a reality.” St John Ambulance is calling on parents to visit www.sja.org.uk/ safetysuit today to learn how to help their child in an emergency. News Spain Registers 0.23% Increase in Housing Stock in 2013

Around half a million new homes per year were added to the official housing statistics from 2001 to 2009, but since 2010 the increase in new homes has moderated every year and, according to recent data released by the Ministry of Development, the total housing stock in Spain stood at 25,441,306 in 2013, which is just 0.23% more (+58,891) than in 2012, when the total was 25,382,415. This is the smallest increase registered in the comparable time series, which began in 2001, and is a reflection of the decline in property development activity. Gonzalo Bernardos, economist and director of Máster Real Estate of the University of Barcelona, describes this limited increase in the housing stock as “perfectly rational” because the market has yet to purge the excesses of the past. In his opinion, “the future of the construction industry lies in rehabilitation instead of building”, which will ultimately drive the housing market. He said: “This will cause an insufficient supply in middle and upper class locations that will lead to price increases in 2015 and 2016 in the region of 10%.” The minimum increase in the housing stock reported by the Ministry of Development is due mainly to the segment of ‘non principal’ properties, which have fallen by about one million units. The Ministry breaks down the Spanish housing stock into ‘principal’ homes (used as the main residence of one or more households and occupied

by these most of the year) and ‘non principal’ (temporary). Thus, the Ministry stated that the total figure of 25,441,306 is divided into 18,991,031 principal homes and 6,450,275 non principal. The second segment has reduced most compared to 2012 (by 7.26 million) while, in contrast, the number of principal homes rose from 18.11 to 18.99 million. All regions and cities registered increases in housing stock numbers in 2013, although in many cases very slight. For example, in Murcia the number of houses rose by only 873 units, from 783,002 to 783,875, and in the Canary Islands by just less than 1,000 (from 1,044,637 to 1,045,619). Asturias, the Balearic Islands and Extremadura also stood among those regions with increases of less than 2,000 homes. In contrast, stood Andalucía (+9,581) and Madrid (+9,405). With regard to the total number of unsold homes by region, and in keeping with pure demographic variables, Andalucía continues to lead with 4,394,515 homes, followed by Catalonia (3,888,233) and Valencia (3,161,095). Madrid recorded a total of 2,932,915 homes. The regions with fewest homes are La Rioja, with 200,805, and Navarre, with 314,691. As for the number of non principal homes, Andalucía again leads the ranking, with 1,113,306, although just ahead of Valencia (1,104,812). Source: http://news.kyero.com/

The number of Spanish families who earmark part of their budget for an intended holiday has been reduced with the crisis. The data from the study showed that, between 2010 and 2011, the decline was 1.8%, and between 2012 and 2013 the decline was 4%. Overall, 8.4% fewer families have taken a holiday between 2010 and 2013.

While fewer families are going on holiday, those who did decide to do so in 2013 increased their spending by 6.4% compared to 2010. Thus, if the average national spending was 940 euros in 2010, three years later it was over 1,000 euros.

Extremadura registered the highest percentage of families who went on holiday last year, with 55% of families. However, they were at the same time the region to spend the least of their budget for these trips, with an average expenditure of just slightly over 550 per year. Murcia and Madrid were the other

El Economista reported that, compared to 2012, the families that increased their holiday budget most were those from the Basque Country, with their expenditure rising about 40%, from 840 euros a year earlier to 1,200 euros in 2013. Conversely, holiday spending reduced most compared to 2012 in Navarra, Rioja and Catalonia, by 30% in the first two and by 20% in Catalonia. Source: http://news.kyero.com/

desert baking

Why two sisters started baking in a dessert

The land in Los Monegros in Aragon in northeastern Spain, is almost as arid as a desert. In the 1960s, it was one of the backdrops chosen for spaghetti western films. Yet for two twenty-something Spanish sisters, it has become the perfect place for their farming and bread-baking business. Ana Marcen, the elder of the two, says she had no previous experience in agriculture. “I studied Greek and Latin and used to work in an orchestra as a singer.” Her younger sister Laura used to work as a waitress and studied engineering. Their business idea grew out of something their uncle told them - that in times gone by, the bread in this part of Spain tasted different. It was a flavour he missed. The sisters say their uncle was “a very curious person, he used to ask himself why bread didn´t taste any longer as it used to.” They discovered that a type of wheat seed, known as Aragon 03, had been the secret behind the region’s distinctly-flavoured

bread. They found an elderly couple who still had a small quantity of the Aragon 03 seed. The Marcens bought two bags of the seeds - and from that their business has grown. The concept of their business is to control the entire breadmaking process. They grow the wheat, mill the flour and bake the bread, muffins and other bakery snacks. “Unlike other traditional bakeries that just sell organic products, we control the whole process”, says Laura ‘You must be mad’ They set up their business in 2007, just before Spain’s economic and financial crisis hit. They were able to get a bank loan of €250,000, ($335,000; £200,000) which they think would be harder to come by in today’s post-recession climate. In the first year, their business lost lots of money, but by the third year they broke even. Now, seven years after they first started farming and baking, they own two bakeries and sell their products in eight others. Whatever profit they make, they reinvest in their business as they want to expand and sell online. “Many people told us we were crazy for trying to run a business like ours in a (dry) place like this. But we found out that the seed we grow is perfect for this climate”, says Laura.“People think that there is no life in Los Monegros, but in reality the region is rich in plants and wildlife. “As my uncle used to say, you have to bend your knees and look closely. For example, I see opportunities where others don’t.” Family idea, family business From the very start, this was a family-run business. Their father Daniel harvests the crop, their mother Mercedes, works in one of their shops, and their younger brother, Jesus, mills the flour and bakes the bread. Read more on www.bbc.co.uk

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves that we are underlings.”Julius Caesar. Cassius rejected the popular theory relating to astrology. The fault here is cancer and the film looks at how two teenagers, in particular, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters deal with their afflictions and the effects it has on their relationships with their parents.

Directed by Josh Boone and produced by Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen. The film is based on the hugely successful book by American writer, John Green. Shailene Woodley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager and The Descendants) stars as Hayley. Ansel Elgort (Carrie, Tommy Ross and Caleb Prior) plays Augustus.

Affliction by Peter van Houten (Willem Dafoe). Haxel wants assurance that at the end of the book the survivors will find happiness and not mourn for the rest of their days. It is important to her because it mirrors her state of dying and she wants to feel that her own parents will have a life without her once she has gone. Gus encourages contact with the writer and in spite of Hazel’s illness the two of them with Mrs Lancaster in tow, fly to Amsterdam hoping for answers.

The experience proves a shock and disappointment for both of them. The writer i s a drunkard, rude and callous man. His assistant resigns and she takes the couple to visit Anne Frank’s house where the couple show their feelings openly by kissing in public, to the rapturous applause of the spectators. pause for thought

It seems that most of us, when asked why we chose to retire to Spain, give reasons that include the Sunshine and the more relaxed way of life. Why then, I frequently wonder, do so many of us spend so much time complaining about the excessive heat and the interminable delays we experience whenever we have to deal with officialdom? Are these not two key reasons for our being here? Some of us, it seems, are never satisfied! So it came as quite a refreshing change when I was recently reminded of words St Paul wrote to the Church in Philippi, saying “I’ve learned to be content with every circumstance of life” – not bad for a man who’d been wrongly beaten and imprisoned, besides enduring all manner of other hardships! But how great is contentment – the ability to accept and make the most of whatever life throws at us. And it’s a characteristic that all we who claim to be Christian should know, as Paul did. For an essential part of our faith is the acceptance that God is in control, and that therefore, however difficult personal circumstances may seem, we can afford to relax and leave the worrying to Him. The trouble is that, so often, rather like St Peter, we become distracted by the circumstances around us and take our eyes off Jesus, so find ourselves sinking. So let’s take heart and look beyond the problems that surround us, to see Christ stretching out to us and giving us the power to rise above our difficulties, and so to relax, content in whatever situation we may face, knowing our Heavenly Father cares and controls. Bake for about 15 minutes then remove the beans and parchment and return to the oven for a further five minutes. 6.Remove from the oven and reduce the temperature to 170C/340F/Gas 3½. 7.For the filling, mix the lemon zest and juice with the cornflour and stir to form a smooth paste. Measure 450ml/16fl oz of water into a pan and bring to the boil. Add the lemon cornflour mixture to the hot water and stir over the heat until the mixture has thickened, then remove from the heat. 8.In a bowl mix together the sugar and egg yolks

and carefully whisk into the lemon mixture in the pan. Stir over a medium heat until thickened. Set aside for a few minutes and then pour into the baked pastry case. 9.For the meringue, whisk the egg whites in a free-standing mixer until soft peaks form when the whisk is removed. Add the caster sugar a little at a time, still whisking until the meringue is stiff and glossy. Add the cornflour and whisk again. 10.Spoon on top of the filled pastry case and spread the meringue to completely cover the lemon filling. Then create a swirl on the top of the meringue. 11.Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until the filling is completely set and the meringue is lightly golden and crisp. 12.Serve warm or cold

Help Your Cat Beat the Heat Don’t Take Chances with Heatstroke and Sunburn

You know the drill: the sun is blinding, relentlessly beating down reminiscent of a Stephen King novel. If you don’t have air conditioning, you seek out shady spots and sigh in relief from the slightest breeze, otherwise you huddle inside. Your thirsty body craves fluids, and the beverage of choice suddenly becomes water. If you stay in the sun too long you may become dizzy, have heart palpitations, and increased internal temperature, all signs of impending heat exhaustion. Consider this: before you ever reach that point, your cat may also be showing signs of heat exhaustion or

heat stroke. Although heat stroke is more commonly discussed in dogs, because of people’s propensity to leave them in parked cars, cats can be affected too. Cats can’t always tell you they’re not feeling up to par, but they sure can show you. Early symptoms of heat stroke and the accompanying dehydration are: Panting, Anxiety, possibly demonstrated by pacing, Increased heartbeat, Respiratory distress or hyperventilation (Breeds with flat noses may exhibit this earlier because of compromised airways.), Dark red gums, Lethargy, Increased internal body temperature Your cat’s internal temperature should be between 100.5° and 101.5° F. A temperature of 104° or more is a definite warning sign You can help your cat survive extremely hot weather by keeping him indoors in a cool interior room. Rubbing him down with a damp towel will help; so will immersing his feet in a tub of cool water. Wrapping a cold compress under the cat’s neck will also help cool him off. He may fight at first, but most likely will appreciate it once he gets used to the idea. Try wrapping a plastic bag of frozen peas in a towel, and placing in in his bed for a cool spot to lie. The peas will rearrange themselves to fit his contours and he’ll have a “custom spa” for cooling off. The optimum water bowl is an automatic water dispenser. There are a variety of them on the market, but after testing many over the years, I have returned time and again to my favorite, the Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain I have three of them in my home - one in

the dining room, one in my bedroom and one in my son’s bedroom. As anyone who has ever dipped a toe in a mountain spring knows, fresh, flowing water stays naturally cool. Lacking an automated fountain, make sure your cat has several bowls of cool water available. It doesn’t hurt to drop an ice cube in once in awhile, not only to cool the water, but to pique kitty’s interest in drinking. Strangely enough, cats affected by external heat may refuse to drink water, exacerbating the problem of dehydration, so you may want to “force” water by using an eyedropper or syringe. Be careful not to shoot the water down his throat as it can enter his lungs and/or cause choking. Just dribble a drop or two at a time in the corner of his mouth, which will help hydrate him and draw his interest to drinking on his own. If your cat exhibits any of the signs above that lead you to think he is suffering heat exhaustion, cool him down as quickly as possible by immersing him in cool water, and then wrapping him with wet towels. Then get him to the veterinarian immediately. This is a serious, potentially fatal condition. White cats, or cats with white ears and faces, are particularly susceptible to sunburn. Over a period of time, repeated exposure to the sun can cause squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer found most often on the tips of the ears and nose. Early signs are a sore that does not heal, or that bleeds.

it will be a Spaniard who has punched in a wrong number, and no, I am not Loli, nor Ana, nor even Juan or José. Or it will be Movistar trying to encourage me to spend money on a moneysaving scheme of one sort or another – What makes them think that by spending money I am going to save money? Above all, I hate a machine that is cleverer than I am. There used to be a procedure by which (if you knew what to do) you could check to see how much credit there was on the phone. It didn’t like the mastery that this gave me, so it withdrew this facility. However, I was not to be denied so easily; I took it back the place of its birth, the Movistar shop. Here the Spanish salesgirl, the Mistress of the Mobile, plus a suitably juvenile Techno-Geek, fought with it for a full morning

before announcing that it had them beat, and I’d better send it back to Movistar. It’s latest wheeze was to withdraw all signs of life. It sat, completely blank, and no amount of plugging into the charger, battering its buttons or threatening it with the hot wash vigorous cycle with spin would persuade it into any form of communication. The Movistar shop having disappeared I took it into Euronics, and handed it to the boss, explaining that it was not Funcion-ing. He took it from me, fiddled around with it for a few seconds, and then met my eye with the kindly gaze of a father towards his much loved, but mentally deficient daughter. ‘You have to put some money on it.’ He explained in a soft and gentle tone. ‘Oh.’ I answered, inadequately. I swear I heard the damn thing chuckle as josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk he returned it to me!

By All the Saints

I was looking at train times the other day and I suddenly thought . . . who the heck was Saint Pancras? It’s a strange sounding name. Like a lot of other towns, villages and landmarks in Britain that bear the names of saints, we just accept them and almost never wonder just who these people were, what they did and why they deserved to be canonised. So I checked. Pancras was a Roman who lived at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth centuries AD, but his life was a short one because at the age of fourteen he was beheaded for his refusal to renounce his Christian faith. How one of our most iconic railway stations came to be named after him I really don’t know, but surprisingly I found that the parish church in the Devonshire village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor is also named after and dedicated to him. There you go. Pretty useless information I suppose, but it got me thinking about other locations and Cornwall in particular, which is said to contain more towns and villages named after saints, than anywhere else in the country In this picturesque and fascinating county you will come across such places as St Just; St Breock; St Keyne; St Mawes; St Mellion; St Juliot; St Blazey; St’s Columb

Major and Minor; St Agnes and St Buryan . . . and this is just a small sampling of the many holy men and women represented here, each with an intriguing story attached. Either the early Cornish were extremely pious or they could not be bothered to think of any other suitable names, leaving them time to get on with the important business of inventing things like pasties and stargazey pie. St Austell is one of the largest towns in the county and is well known for its china clay quarries. To be honest the only thing I really need to know about this saint is the famous brewery that’s named after him and its excellent beer . . . especially Proper Cool IPA and Hicks Special Draught. Luvverly! I find it interesting to note that the likes of St Neot and St Ives (a take on the actual name of Ia) also have place names in towns geographically far removed from Cornwall and interestingly (yawn) both can be found in Cambridgeshire. But not so interesting is the fact that I have no idea why or what the connection is if any and I haven’t taken the trouble to find out. St Neot has a particularly quaint legend attached to him. The Cornish traditionally believed that he was only fifteen inches high and spent much of his day up to his neck in water in a well during his devotions. Each day he was happy to be lowered into the well, but on being hauled out was pretty brassed off and grumpy. I wonder if this is where Walt Disney got his inspiration for two of the characters in the film Snow White. It is said that Neot had a strange way with animals and

birds, and worked miracles with them. These are portrayed in the stained glass windows of St Neot’s Church. Other tales have him actually standing a towering four feet tall, but either way let’s face it, he was never going to be considered for the ancient Cornwall police force. It is said that he began his adult life as a soldier however, which is hard to believe. Mind you where he lacked the ability to engage in sword fights, he could have made up for it by being a whiz at knee capping. Nevertheless, he got fed up with being paraded around as the regimental mascot and decided to join a monastery for a spot of monking. He took to it instantly, with his fellow monks coming to regard him as near to perfection as a man could get . . . Apart from one small dirty habit. St Michael is one of the candidates regarded as the patron saint of Cornwall, with the magical St Michael’s Mount a national treasure. It rises majestically out of the sea in Mounts Bay and is connected to Marazion by a causeway that is accessible only at low tide. As an aside, Marazion – Mazarron . . . could there be a connection here? Especially with both locations having an abundance of long disused mines – tin, copper, zinc, lead, iron and silver in Cornwall and iron, lead, silver, copper and alum around Mazarron. But what I have found is a plethora of largely forgotten saints, each with an extraordinary story attached to their godly lives, and each one revered enough by the inhabitants of Cornwall and other locations, to honour them in this very special way.

So That’s What You Have To Do!

I’ve had a couple of incidents recently which have left me feeling a bit silly. You know the sort of thing, where you push like billy-o on an unyielding door until you have built up an audience, and then notice ‘Tirar’ emblazoned on the doorframe in 2 inch high letters. One of these incidents involved the mobile phone. I acknowledge the usefulness of mobiles, but I am not a lover of them, neither personally nor in the hands of others. We have 2 mobiles, one each, and I avoid using them unless it is absolutely necessary; I answer them if I happen to hear them, only to find that 99 times out of 100

alqueria

viewpoint ¡Kalvino Estupendo!

Kalvino Cabezagrande appeared in Alqueria early one sun drenched morning. Immaculately dressed, teeth gleaming he stood straightbacked, one foot resting easily on the brickwork of the town’s fountain. Cradled in his arms a small kid-goat which he had courageously rescued from a perilous cliff. On his back a five year-old child whom he had found wandering in the sierra. Kalvino’s teeth glinted once more as a ray of sunlight fell upon him. ‘Kalvino Estupendo’ or ‘Super Kalv’ had honoured Alqueria with his presence. No one knows where Kalvino comes from, no one knows where he returns to after his day’s toil is done. He is a professional do-gooder or he would be if he accepted payment. The villagers of southern Spain feel blessed when he arrives, unannounced, righting wrongs, protecting the weak and generally making a nuisance of himself. If there were good deeds to be done Super Kalv did them. He was of course universally loathed by the people of Alqueria. In Alqueria a good deed done invariably meant a bad one for the opposing barrio. The righteousness of Kalvino united Alqueria in their hatred for him. Alqueria is out of step with the rest of humanity and by definition at loggerheads with a humanitarian such as Super Kalv. Kalv’s ‘good deeds’ involved trying to squash Loco Paco’s pet Saharan Dung Beetle, Benjy thinking it was a pest. Loco Paco hurled a collapsible oil fired bidet at him causing Kalvino to seek shelter in the Bar La Casa Devante. Here he promptly lectured Antonio Poyato on the evils of drink. Poyato in return acquainted Kalv to

the dangers of lecturing random drunks on their alcohol consumption and sent him back into the street swiftly followed by an empty Remitroot bottle. These occurrences were unfortunate but what followed was ill-advised and fool hardy. Diving for cover as the wayward Remitroot Rum bottle passed safely overhead Kalvino found himself at the feet of Manuela. Now, a more discreet individual would have got up, greeted her and walked on. Not our Super Kalv. Realising who she was and being familiar with her reputation he began a discourse into her life-style and morality or rather lack of it. Super Kalv was never seen nor heard of from that day on. The people of Alqueria closed ranks behind Manuela and Kalvino Cabezagrande was never mentioned again. As a matter of record the kid-goat that was cradled in Kalv’s arms was tethered to the cliff edge so it could benefit from the morning breeze and help cure a nasty case of croup. It died the next day for want of the healing mountain air. The five year old child on his back was quite happily on a nature ramble before Super Kalv hove into view and ‘rescued her’.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

TMGS Match

Report 23rd July 2014 – Villamartin. On this day in history Bonnie Prince Charlie lands at Eriskay in the Hebrides, Scotland, to lay claim to the British throne. And another player breaks the 40 point barrier with TMGS. The hard work Villamartin are putting into the course is paying off and the course is in very good condition, but how we wish that they would get with the times and have their flags to represent where the hole is on the green for example, the 2nd yesterday, red flag yet the pin was all the way back down that slope. Come on Villamartin, get with it! Score in the mid 30’s were needed to get anywhere near the prizes and a fine 39 pointer from Andy Moore gave him the Best Guest prize In the Silver Division, 30 points saw John Haggart take 4th spot, 31 from Les Wilton gave him 3rd spot. Once again, the “Belfast Bandit”(Ernie Wilson) was in the frame and this week another 34 pointer gave him second slot, a full 5 points behind Colin Marsden who’s 39 haul secured the top slot and a handicap cut. The Gold lads fared a little bit better and it needed 33 points for Dag Lovas to take 4th spot. Steve Higgins claimed 3rd place with 34 points, with Hans Arevesen’s 35 points claimed

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY

An early start at Alenda on Thursday but most of us had rubbed the sleep from our eyes by tee-off time. Two noshows unfortunately, one being Geoff E. who constantly seems to lose his way to Alenda! The other was a result of female dominance when builders gave only half an hour notice of arrival

to complete some work, and the little woman allowed her hubby to play. She is obviously more capable of handling the important stuff than the old man. The course ,as usual, was in wonderful condition and apparently suited our only Guest,16 year-old Tom Bibby, who in his first round at the course scored an excellent 40 points. Only 3 Nearest the pins were won, by Lynn Young, Graham Marriner and Mick Cook. Winner of the Silver group was Elspeth Craig with 34pts and the Gold Winner was Mick Cook with 37pts. Mick also won the 2’s Kitty which had

been rolling over for several weeks and generously provided wine for the members out of his winnings. Muchas gracias Mick. Again many thanks to Helena and Paulo for providing the after match victuals. The next game is at Vistabella on 7th August at 9.00 a.m followed by Font De Lop 0920 on 21st August And Alicante at 10.00 on 4th September. Sheets will be on the board at the Sports Centre. Anybody requiring tickets for The 10th Anniversary Dinner on 12th August should contact Elspeth on elspethmcd@yahoo.co.uk or phone 966077204. the runners-up slot. However, best score on the day and a certain cut was Arne Hansson on 41 points. Only 3 of the 4 NTP prizes, kindly donated by Pearl Sabine and Tom Jones, were claimed and the recipients of a very nice bottle of plonk went to Peter Wells, Les Wilton and Paul Fairclough. Photo: Gold category winners Our next game, Wednesday 30th July 2014 see’s us at the delightful track of La Marquessa where we will be having a meal after the game and for 50€ you will get a game, a buggy and the meal and if you are a “walker”, the cost is only 40€, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www. tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604. LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY

El Plantio - 23 July 2014 The Society played at El Plantio on Wednesday with only 26 members and guests braving the heat and boy was it hot, they do say that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun, but we did take a few Scots and a Belgian along as well, so they must be as mad as us. The course was in summer mode, longer grass on the greens and also the fairways to help keep in the moisture, these things proved more difficult to some than others. As usual our fortnightly stableford was enjoyed with lots of smiles even though the scores were lower than usual. Gold Division: 1st Brian Smith 33pts, 2nd David Norton 28pts and 3rd John Dunnion 25pts Silver Division: 1st Dave Lewis 32pts, 2nd Sue Smith 28pts and 3rd Eddy Downing 27pts Bronze Division: 1st Chris Nield 34pts, 2nd Ray Parsons 28pts and 3rd Paul Carter 20pts NTPs: hole 7 was unachievable today, hole 9 Brian Smith, hole 12 in 3 shots was also elusive and hole 16 in 2, John Dunnion. The 2s cache is turning into a pot of gold as this is the second rollover and as our next game is the Summer Cup at Alicante, our 3rd major of the year there will be mucho dinero to play for, and also this will be the third round of the eclectic, so a lot going on. The free game draw was won by Gordon Cobb. For those of you who play the 18 hole games at Vistabella please note that the two games in August will be in the afternoons with the first tee off time being 13.20, so please be there for 12.45.

CLAPTONS GOLF SOCIETY

CAPTAIN’S DAY BONALBA GOLF & SPA FRIDAY 18TH JULY This was a much awaited 2014 Captain’s Day which both members and partners were looking forward to. The ladies for their spa day and the members for their golf. The coach left the Club House at 7.30am having waited an extra fifteen minutes for the non-arrival, apparently he overslept. We arrived at the course in brilliant sunshine knowing that it was going to be a very hot day. Everybody was suitably tanked up with many litres of water and food for sustenance along the way. The Captain was looking to cement his fifth win of the year, ha ha. As it was he didn’t manage it but he lost by a single point. As we came off the course and headed for the showers the ladies came from the spa for the meal presented in the restaurant. The cards were scrutinized and this year’s winner of Captain’s Day turned out to be steady Tony Stead. Many congratulations. The course has gone under a recent renovation from the jurisdiction of the

Madrid College. Once again it was in very good condition, although because of its use the greens had not been cut tight which made them difficult to read and slow at times. Nevertheless all the cards being checked over there was a myriad of good scores. Our thanks to Bonalba for their excellent hospitality and helping us to have a really good day. Our special thanks go to Richard Davies and the staff at Bonalba. Our thanks also go to our many sponsors including Estrella Damm, Mono’s Bar, Mick the Grip. Results as follows. El Plantio 2 Golf Society

A healthy attendance of 21 people, including 5 guests turned out for El Plantio 2 Golf Society’s ‘Waltz’ competition on Tuesday, 21st July. For the uninitiated, the format entails 7 groups of 3 players counting Stableford scores in 1/2/3 sequence i.e on the 1st hole - 1 score counts - on the 2nd hole - 2 scores count etc. On the 4th hole, it reverts to 1 counting. Nearest the pin hole 5 was guest John Wilby with George Stanhope taking hole 9. Best Visitor with 33 individual points was Mike Kent. In 3rd place with 74 points was Roger Marshall, Mike Williams and Lyn Young. In 2nd, on count back with 77 points, came Kenny Reddington, Bryan Watson and Martin Rickman. The winners, after initially reporting an incorrect score, which would have placed them 2nd, were Frank Stanhope, Rod Loveday and Lawrence Wanty. I think they wanted to finish 2nd and win the Brandy. If you would like to play golf and find playing the big courses too expensive, join our friendly 9 hole society. Ring Ian Henderson on 636116230 for further details.

Trophies to end the swimming season

This weekend was a busy one and one that ends the 2013-2014 season. The final competition of the season the “XV Memorial Juan Fuster Zaragoza” took place on Saturday 26th July in the 25m pool at the International School Lopez de Vega, Benidorm. Fifteen of the regions clubs participated in 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley events in age categories from Prebenjamin to Infantil (7 – 14yrs). Torrevieja swimmers enjoyed some good racing and two of the team members won 1st place. Paula Garcia won gold in her 50m freestyle event with a new best time of 31:17 and Piroska Rideg first in her 100m medley event with another best time of 1:14:91. Other members of the team also had good swims improving on previous times. Lastly the girls 4 x 50m

freestyle relay fought hard in their race just missing out on trophies with 4th place. Also this weekend Zoe Connolly travelled to Barcelona for the “XXXVI Infantil Spanish National Summer Championships”. Zoe had worked hard to gain qualification times in the 100m and 200m Backstroke events. For Zoe the event was a fantastic experience but was masked with disappointment as she fell and sprained her ankle a hour before her first race so her swims did not produce best times but she still remains ranked in the the top 50 swimmers for her age across Spain. The Club now takes a break throughout August and comes back in September to the new swimming season 20142015. Many thanks as always to Tony, helped to keep us cool, shame that some of the Swallows had flown back Jackie. Next game is the Tuesday 12th to cooler climes, as our number were August at Vistabella, First tee 09.15 a little depleted. The last game in August has been Alicante Golf at San Juan Playa where the Seve designed course brought forward to the 18th at Las is located, was in super condition Colinas, due to them hollow tinning particularly the fairways, which had the course. SPORTSMAN GS 22 Players ascended upon the picturesque Golf Course of El Valle. Rather than length, the course relies on numerous subtle strategic elements to challenge golfers. The course also puts a premium on accuracy, not power, and favours the intelligent player who can manage his or her game. Added to that we had to contend with the usual Temperatures for this time of year, all in all a big challenge lay ahead. The early four balls managed to complete the round in under 4 1/2 hours with some of the latter groups taking up to 5 1/2 hours, not really an acceptable time. Was it the weather, or was it the course that created the slow play ??? Only the players in the groups know the answer !! Anyway all in all we had a good day playing a course that was in excellent condition. The course a little shorter than the norm, was awaiting to see some good scores. We did not disappoint, with five players achieving 20 points or more on the front nine holes ( Tony Stead, Nikki Ead, Gary Strowger all 20 points & Kevin Hall 22 points & Ian Faulkner 23 points) however, only one
