News Alicante town trades rubbish lorries for horses and carts

IMAGE: www.valenciatoday.es

2

A TOWN in eastern Spain has swapped the dust cart for a horse and cart to save money. Monforte del Cid (Alicante province) says it will save 200,000 euros a decade – half its costs – by using four-legged transport for collecting rubbish from bins around the streets. A first for Spain, horses and carts for refuse collection have been introduced already in 80 towns and villages in France and Belgium. As well as ensuring that horses bred for driving do not diminish in population – given that with motorised transport, they are mainly only reproduced for showing or driving competitions – the cost of keeping a horse, net of livery, is vastly lower than that of running a refuse lorry. And horses can carry on working for longer than a vehicle, normally being broken in at three, brought on at four and fully in action at five, with most capable of a moderate-toheavy workload until age 20 if they are physically fit, and at least light exercise until around 25. Plus, exceptions exist: horses and ponies in good health can live to their late 20s or early 30s, but the world record is 62 – a draught horse in the 19th century, overtaken by the 10hh Shetland X Exmoor gelding Sugar Puff, who died in 2007 aged 56 - and a very small number have been known to live into their 40s. Until last year, the world’s oldest living horse was the 15hh liver chestnut Irish Draught X thoroughbred, Shayne (pictured right), who was 51 when he had to be put to sleep in 2013. Although this is very unusual and most healthy horses and ponies die of old age 20 years before Shayne

did, many which have no medical problems are as fit and working as hard at 23 as they were at 10. Montforte del Cid town council says it costs between 5,000 and 7,000 euros a year in diesel to run a refuse lorry, which has a maximum useful life of 10 years, and to buy them means shelling out around 125,000 euros. But buying a horse or pony and cart suitable for the same purpose costs no more than 6,000 euros at most for the two together. If the council has suitable stabling of its own and does not need to pay rent on a box and field, the total cost of shoeing, feeding, worming, annual vaccinations and providing hay and bedding for a typical driving pony or carthorse is between 900 and 1,200 euros a year, including vet bills unless the animal has ongoing or serious health problems, lameness or suffers a bad accident. And the pony or horse can work for an average of 20 years, whilst the cart will last even longer – and, of course, the method is environmentallyfriendly. Even the horses’ manure can be recycled and generate an income – the town intends to set up a compost heap for farms and gardens with it. Finally, employing quadrupeds and traps for rubbish collection means creating new jobs – the council needs grooms to care for the horses and experienced drivers for the traps, whilst the same number of dustbin men will still be needed.

According to a recent study carried out by the property rental portal, House Trip, on 22 European destinations, tourists choosing to rent apartments for their holidays can save up to 58% compared with booking a hotel room. According to the portal’s holiday apartment price index, Dubrovnik, Cannes and Palma de Mallorca offer the greatest savings. Specifically, a one bedroom apartment in the Croatian city, with a price of 72 euros, costs an average of 99 euros less than a stay in a hotel, where the cost is around 171 euros. For Cannes the saving is 82 euros, while in Palma de Mallorca it is around 70 euros, with an apartment in the island destination priced at 58 euros while the average cost for a hotel room rises to 128 euros. In another Spanish destination, Barcelona, renting a property can be 50% more economical than booking

a hotel, with the average rate of 128 euros for a hotel stay dropping to 60 euros on average for renting a holiday apartment. Behind Barcelona stands Nice, where the price difference between the two types of accommodation is 66 euros per night, while in Paris, the city with the highest hotel prices in Europe, at an average of 159 euros, renting a holiday apartment would generate a saving of about 58 euros. The President of the rental portal, Arnaud Bertrand, explained that the objective of the analysis is to help families and travellers “to make informed decisions about places to travel while saving money this summer”. “Staying in a house instead of a hotel room is the easiest way to enjoy the holidays, and the best way to ensure the family spends time together,” he added. Lions at Granja Escuela Sol Del Camp

There were Lions at the Granja Escuela Sol Del Camp, near Agost last weekend. The farm school which provides facilities for disabled, and disadvantaged children normally houses animals like donkeys, rabbits, pigs, geese and the like, however the Lions who visited last weekend were no danger to any of the other animals on this occasion. The Lions were visiting from the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club, and were there to present a cheque for 1,000.00 euros to Josefina Valero Martinez, President of ADIS Vega Baja. ADIS Vega Baja consist of a wonderful team of volunteers who care for and share their lives with children and young adults who suffer from varying degrees of disabilty. Every year the volunteers take the children off to Summer Camp, on this occasion to Agost, where the children can enjoy a short holiday with all their friends in a

happy and carefree environment. An additional benefit from attending the Summer Camp is that the parents of the children get a short break from caring for their children, full in the knowledge that they are safe and happy in the care of Josefina and her band of volunteers. The Torrevieja Costa Lions are proud to be associated with ADIS Vega Baja and look forward to continuing the relationship.

La Tomatina 2014 Is ......

La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this ‘World’s Biggest Food Fight’ where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets. The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest. Prior to 2013 anywhere from 40,000 to 50,000 (reported to be 50,000 in 2012) people crammed into this huge tomato fight, greatly expanding Bunol’s normal 9,000 person population. Since the 2013 event official ticketing was put into place limiting the number of participants to just 20,000 lucky people. What Happens at La Tomatina .... At around 11 am, the first event of the Tomatina begins. Many trucks haul the bounty of tomatoes into the center of the town, Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from Extremadura, where they are less expensive. Technically the festival does not begin until one brave soul has climbed to the top of a twostory high, greased-up wooden pole and reached the coveted ham at the top. In practice this process takes

27th August 2014

Image: www.hottrip.net

a long time and the festival starts despite no one reaching the meaty prize. The signal for the beginning of the fight is firing of water cannons, and the chaos begins. Once it begins, the battle is generally every man for himself. Those who partake in this event are strongly encouraged to wear protective safety goggles and gloves. In addition, they must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. Another rule is that no one is allowed to bring into this fight anything that may provoke someone into a more serious brawl, such as a glass bottle. Although it is forbidden to tear someone else’s clothing, the crowd tends to ignore this and invariably will rip the shirt of any clothed person, man or woman. After exactly one hour, the fighting ends when the water cannons are fired once more to signal the end. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown. The cleaning process involves the use of fire trucks to spray down the streets, with water provided from a Roman aqueduct. The authorities seem more concerned with cleaning the town than cleaning the visitors, so some people find water at the Bunol River to wash themselves, although some kind residents will hose passers-by down. Once the tomato pulp is flushed, the ground is clean due to the acidity of the tomato.

Image:www.amazngfacts.com

How did La Tomatina Start .. The tomato fight has been a strong tradition in Bunol since 1944 or 1945. No one is completely certain how this event originated. Possible theories on how the Tomatina began include a local food fight among friends, a juvenile class war, a volley of tomatoes from bystanders at a carnival parade, a practical joke on a bad musician, and the anarchic aftermath of an accidental lorry spillage. One popular theory is that disgruntled townspeople attacked city councilmen with tomatoes during a town celebration. Whatever happened to begin the tradition, it was enjoyed so much that it was repeated the next year, and the year after that, and so on. The holiday was banned during the Spanish State period under Francisco Franco for having no religious significance, but returned in the 1970s after his demise. The festival is in honor of the town’s patron saints, Luis Bertran and the Mare de Deu dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary.

Where is Bunol .....

Bunol is a town and municipality in the province of Valencia, Spain and is situated approximately 38 km west of the provincial and autonomous community capital city, Valencia.

www.apahrescue.org One of Andalucia’s most dramatically positioned pueblos blancos (white villages), Arcos balances atop a rocky limestone ridge, its whitewashed houses and stone castle walls stopping abruptly as a sheer cliff face plunges down to the fertile valley of the river Guadalete below Declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1962 in recognition of its exceptional architecture and impressive location, the old town is a tangled labyrinth of cobbled streets that lead up to a sandstone castle, the Castillo de los Arcos. As you’d expect from such a spectacular vantage point, there are exhilarating views over the town and the rolling plain below. Although its time under the Moors was one of its most successful, Arcos has had a long history of occupation, as shown by the discovery of numerous archaeological remains from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Tartessian, Phoenician and Roman periods. Plentiful water and its superb defensive hilltop location were the main attractions for settlers. Arcos’s population of 28,000 is divided between the newer town on the lower slopes of the ridge and the old town, which you reach by following Cuesta Belén up the hill. In the heart of the old town is the cobbled Plaza de Cabildo, its picturesque situation somewhat marred by its dual function as a car park. On the southern side of the square there are some stomachchurning views, where the mirador (viewpoint) ends in a steep 150m-high cliff Among the most memorable of Arcos’s pretty and often strikingly

narrow streets are the alley-like Calle Cuna and Calle Maldonaldo, lined with elegant palacios built by the town’s 18th-century nobility and overhung by wrought-iron rejas of windows. Tapas bars in the old town are concentrated on or near the central Callejón de las Monjas. Try the Mesón El Patio, an atmospheric cave-like bar near the Santa María church that serves good-value tapas. If you want something more formal, one of the most upmarket restaurants in town is El Convento on Marques de Torresoto, which is in a 17th-century palace and has plenty of game dishes on the menu. The terrace at the luxurious Parador on Plaza del Cabildo is the place to go for a leisurely drink in style and enjoy the best views in Arcos. Down below the town is the Guadalete river lined with olive and orange groves. The tourist office is on the Plaza del Cabildo (Mon-Sat 10.00-14.00 and 15.30-19.30, Sun 10.00-14.00). LA COLA DEL EMBALSE DE ARCOS NATURAL AREA This embalse (reservoir), close to Arcos de la Frontera, is worth a visit for its waterfowl, particularly in winter when there are many more birds here and it is also a stopping place for migratory birds. The area covers 120ha and includes the reservoir and small surrounding area. Regular sights include little and great crested grebes, grey herons, coots and ducks like mallards, red-crested pochards and shovelers. There are also ospreys in winter Easily easily accessible, take the A382 from Arcos de la Frontera towards Villamartín. A few kilometres out of Arcos turn right towards El Bosque and then follow the road around the southern edge of the embalse to a village called El Santiscal, from where there are good views to the reservoir.

It’s not a new thing; the Romans loved their frescoes, and trompe l’oeil has been executed umpteen times to full trickery effect since the Ancient Greeks. The contrasting and colourful work by the late Mexican architect Luis Barragán showed precisely what vibrant colours can do for architecture and the landscape. Barragán painted entire walls with single primary colours, often contrasting with walls of brash pinks, oranges and purples. It’s his work that seems the most relevant and achievable in our own backyards today.

far easier to reapply than paint, stain soaks in and therefore doesn’t need loads of sanding and preparation. Garden furniture can also be painted for a revamp and even old stone, wood or terracotta pots can be washed over with a masonry

paint to tie them all in together. The most important factor is choosing the right colour or combination and using them boldly. Here in Spain, primary colours are eye-catching and the light is powerful enough to set them off properly. Wine reds and deep yellow ochres can look warm and stunning. Cooler colours such as light and deep blues and purples are particularly effective in summer sunshine. However, before going the whole hog and slapping it on, just get yourself a few samples of paint and some old bits of board to play around with. Make sure it dries properly because the hue will change when dry. Then bite the bullet and go for it! The great thing about using paint is that, over time, if you want a new look or get bored with the colour you can just stick a different one over the top!

Are you taking good care of your nails? Here’s what you need to know to keep your fingernails in tiptop shape. By Mayo Clinic Staff Take a close look at your fingernails. Are they strong and healthy looking? Or do you see ridges, dents, or areas of unusual color or shape? Many less than desirable nail conditions can be avoided through proper fingernail care. Others indicate an underlying condition that requires attention. Fingernails: What’s normal, what’s not Your fingernails — composed of laminated layers of a protein called keratin — grow from the area at the base of the nail under your cuticle. As new cells grow, older cells become hard and compacted and are eventually pushed out toward your fingertips. Healthy fingernails are smooth, without pits or grooves. They’re uniform in color and consistency and free of spots or discoloration. Sometimes fingernails develop harmless vertical ridges that run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. Vertical ridges tend to become more prominent with age. Fingernails can also develop white lines or spots due to injury, but these eventually grow out with the nail. Not all nail conditions are normal, however. Consult your doctor or dermatologist if you notice: •Changes in

nail color, such as discoloration of the entire nail or a dark streak under the nail •Changes in nail shape, such as curled nails •Thinning or thickening of the nails •Separation of the nail from the surrounding skin •Bleeding around the nails • Redness, swelling or pain around the nails Fingernail care: Do’s and don’ts To keep your fingernails looking their best, follow these simple guidelines. Do: • Keep your fingernails dry and clean. This prevents bacteria, fungi and other organisms from growing under your fingernails. Wear cotton-lined rubber gloves when washing dishes, cleaning or using harsh chemicals, and avoid long soaks in the tub. • Trim and file your fingernails regularly. Use a sharp manicure scissors or clippers. Trim your nails straight across, then round the tips in a gentle curve. It might be easiest to trim and file your fingernails when they’re soft, such as after bathing. • Use moisturizer. When you use hand lotion, rub the lotion into your fingernails and cuticles, too. Don’t: • Abuse your fingernails. To prevent nail damage, don’t use your fingernails as tools to pick, poke or pry things. • Bite your fingernails or pick at your cuticles. These habits can damage the nail bed. Even a minor cut alongside your fingernail can allow bacteria or fungi to enter and cause an infection. • Pull off hangnails. You might rip live tissue along with the hangnail. Instead, carefully clip off hangnails. • Ignore problems. If you have a nail problem that doesn’t seem to go away on its own or is associated with other signs and symptoms, consult your doctor or dermatologist for an evaluation.

Written by Michael Burke RHAD MSHAA of Digital Hearing, Quesada A hearing-care professional should use their expertise to best advise you which is the right hearing aid for your individual hearing loss and circumstances. Take note of the advice given, weigh up all the information received, and then make your own decision. Degree of hearing Loss The aid you choose must have the power to cover your loss; it is no use having an aid that may be cheaper or better-looking but which is incapable of doing the job. No aid is better than an under-powered aid. As well as your current loss, you must also realise that your hearing will probably deteriorate over the coming years. Make sure you have some headroom, ie excess capacity. This cannot be planned for totally accurately as there is no logic to the rate of deterioration of your hearing: it may never happen; it may happen overnight. Communication Needs What do your ears have to put up with? In what sort of situations and places do you most experience hearing problems: demanding situations, eg orchestras, concerts, big parties, or maybe social situations, restaurants, small groups, or just a quiet lifestyle at home? Do you need a Bluetooth connection to other devices, such as

mobile phones, TVs, computers, etc? Purchase a system capable of doing the job you need it to do. Cosmetics Cosmetics are critical. The best, most suitable hearing aid in the world if it is in the drawer not in your ear is no use to anyone. Ask yourself the question: Would I wear the aid? If the answer is no, don’t buy it. Some people have very small ears; some people have dexterity problems. Ask yourself: Is it physically comfortable? Can I change the battery and operate the controls with ease? Budget Set yourself a budget and stick to it. Spend what you need to do to do the job. If a hearing loss is in both ears, then two aids are three times better than one (- two of the cheapest hearing aids are better than one of the dearest). Whatever you decide, ensure you have a trial period in which you can try your aids in your own environment and if not suitable get your money back or try a different option. If you have any questions about this week’s topic, you can e-mail digitalhearing@hotmail.co.uk, contact Michael Burke at Digital Hearing, Quesada Business Centre, Calle Los Arcos 7, Ciudad Quesada – tel 698 418 642, or visit us on-line at www.digitalhearingspain.com.

Margis E-Cigarettes E-Cigarettes provide a new, safer and cheaper alternative to smoking. Millions of people are now ecig users and successfully kicked the smoking habit E-Cigarettes Versus Tobacco We all know that e-cigs are less dangerous to one’s health, cost far less, don’t produce ash, smell better and don’t inflict the dangers of passive smoking on other people…. scientifically proved.

Media Reaction The media report on E-Cigarettes has spread widely and positively across TV, radio and the press.

E-Liquid There has recently been a concerning trend for some e-cig retailers to mix e-liquid to order in the back of their shop, sometimes even while-you-wait. Its hard to imagine that the appropriate level of hygiene can be maintained in these conditions however well intentioned

Buyer Beware It is not my intention to suggest that Margi’s E-Cigs are the only e-cig suppliers who sell quality goods at a fair price, There are many good suppliers available. What is of concern is the substantial and growing number of e-cig sellers who view the public as a profit bandwagon upon which to ride only while the going is good. Some shockingly poorly manufactured e-cigs are being openly sold by unscrupulous market stall holders and none-specialist outlets. It is often the case that poor quality goods are sold with huge extraordinary profits.

SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today I want to continue where we left off last week in describing the problems involved with streaming internet TV and why there are times when the little back box just sits there ‘buffering’. Last week we looked at some of the reasons behind the problems facing website owners such as FilmOn but had to leave it a little dry and ‘in the air’. Today I would like to, using analogue (if it was good enough for Buddha, Allah and Jesus, then it good enough for a simple teacher like me), to develop with you an understanding of why you get buffering. What is the problem? Lets go back to the analogue of water in the pipe. Imagine that the water is there to push around a water mill that grinds wheat. To work properly the mill needs 1 pint of water per second to turn it. Your Super pipe can provide water at 1 gallon per second (8 pints = 1 gallon for those too young to remember), which is then stored in a tank that feeds the mill wheel, so there shouldn’t be a problem. Your mill is so successful that you have to put in another wheel! 2 mills needing 1 pint each to power them is 2 pints per second leaving 6 pints spare. Business is so good that you have to put in another 8 wheels. Oops! You have only enough water to power 8 wheels in total but now have 10! Solution? Run 8 wheels at a time and divert the water to the other 2 wheel tanks in turn – that way all 10 mill wheels are constantly turning. Unfortunately, all the tanks will start to run dry as the super hose can’t provide enough water to keep them all topped up all the time! This is similar to what is happening to your Internet TV. Substitute a digital buffer (digital water tank) for a real water tank, and streaming

‘Corrie’ for water. Then change the mill wheels to end users (your good selves) and instead of 10 mill wheel substitute 10’s of 1000’s of avid ‘Corrie’ fans. These ‘buffers’ are constantly emptying faster than they are filling up and have to wait for enough information before they can start to stream the TV program again. This is simply what buffering is and why it is happening. Then the analogue starts to make sense and you will see what the problem is. FILMON (just one of many Internet TV Providers) has this same juggling act simply because it can only afford a 1 gallon pipe. So, contrary to popular belief, it isn’t always the fault of your internet provider. Nor is it the fault of the Internet TV box seller and in many cases it isn’t even the fault of the website such as ‘FilmOn’. It is an unavoidable consequence of new technology overtaking the capacities of the existing technology. As with all things you will have to be patient and wait until things catch up and settle down. You always have the option of recording using DVR (Digital Video Recording – simple really) and watching it later. At least that way you can watch the entire program that has been recorded on your computer, uninterrupted and without buffering. I hope that this article hasn’t insulted the intelligence of anyone by being over simplified or been too complicated either. It is my hope to help and educate through these articles. Please let me know how I’m doing. So until then I will be at Jack’s Bar in Albox for my usual Friday afternoon computer clinic, but can also be contacted at the number or email address below.

Abandon hope all ye that enter - Part III The futility of life or buying an IKEA kitchen. On our last visit to IKEA we’d been given a rather expensive quote and told we couldn’t order a thing until the ‘measuring man’ had been. Going through the quote at home we thought that paying IKEA 600€ to fit the units was expensive and got a much cheaper quote locally. We cancelled ‘measuring man.’ My wife sensibly refused to go back to buy the stuff and organise delivery so I gallantly offered to do the dirty work. Now knowing the system I zipped through the room displays and joined the queue to queue to then be able to queue with a pager. Just 30 minutes later I was sat with a lovely yellow lady called Maria de las Nievas on the uncomfortable stools. I handed the previous quote over and a warm feeling came over me as she thoroughly checked each line of our quote umming and ahing as she went. Maria looked at me all maternally and told me that on our previous visit, yellow girl had duplicated

Sea Life!

There’s an awful lot of sea knocking about. Really, it’s everywhere and even though it can look very inviting, I’ve always thought it was a bit on the scary side of things. But recently, I came across an article that suggested differently. Somewhere off the coast of Spain, near Bilbao-and yes, it is a big big coastline there, so nobody’s giving much away -a winemaker stores his wine, under the sea. Now you may, just I was, be just a little surprised at this news. Surely, you would think, if there was a storm out at sea or, heaven forbid, an earthquake, then that’s the wine done for, but apparently not. Now I’ve always associated the underwater world with some quite nasty things. There’s an awful lot down there that you really can’t trust and would sting, bite, squish or even eat you without a moment’s hesitation. Yes I know that “Jaws” has put a lot of people off the idea of dipping more than a toe in the water, but perhaps on two counts, this underwater wine storage thing could give marine life much better publicity. First of all, it just goes to show you that not everything lurking down there is bent on doing indescribably nasty- or painful- things to you for no other reason than, that they can! No, perhaps there is a softer side down there and that could well be connected to that wine storage thing. Have you ever noticed that, try as you may, you often get a bit of wine leaking out of a bottle, especially when the cork is a bit on the old side. Maybe this could be the start of a change in marine behaviour. A little wine seeping into the water may well mellow some of those more confrontational critters and could be encouraging a laid back, collegial life down there. Or maybe not. Have you ever seen a black dragon fish? You’d remember if you had. It’s not the sort of thing that you’d ever forget. If you’ve ever seen “Alien”, than you’ve got an idea of what this horrific looking thing is like. It’s all teeth and mouth and is certainly not the most attractive of creatures. No, all that creepy stuff you find underwater still puts me off big time. On balance, if I ever hear a call from the sea I’d put the phone down! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

items and quoted us 400€ too much. Maria was good, she was very good. I watched in awe as she phoned people to talk about stuff and then type things into the computer. Then came printing, lots of printing, more calls to check more stuff, then more pressing of buttons and yet more printing. But my heart sank when Maria said it would be three weeks until delivery and even worse I couldn’t simply pay her and leave. Instead she handed me a bag of door knobs, a wedge of paperwork and told me what to do next. I made detailed notes as my poor confused brain couldn’t cope. Although the units were to be delivered I was sent to find some of it in the cavernous warehouse below. Carefully modelled on Dante’s Inferno, the Devil beckoned from his pit of fire; the ‘market place’. Nothing can be done in IKEA without walking every square inch of the place first. No express lanes here as everyone needs a framed photo of a double decker bus and a few more tea lights. Exhausted I

reached the warehouse and found the correct aisle surprisingly easily, I loaded up a hob and other bits as instructed. I then had to pay not only for the items on the trolley but also the quote for the rest of the kitchen. This I think I handled well as the cashier spoke in rapid fire Spanish when giving me yet more instructions to continue my ordeal. I glanced hungrily at the hot dog stand but instead pushed my trolley onwards to the transport desk where I was charged more money and my hob and doorknobs were taken from me. Next I was sent to customer services to pay for our oven to be. Why it couldn’t be paid for in the original quote I’ve no idea but some IKEA logistics boffin has deemed an extra complication for the customer makes it easier for IKEA. The oven was out of stock so instead I bought an imaginary oven, and then took the receipt back to transport where they added my invisible oven to my trolley of doorknobs and whisked

everything away. Hurray, hot dog time! I suspect using a local kitchen company would have been much easier. Seven hours of my life robbed by two stressful and soul destroying visits. Then there were the wasted hours using the useless website, oh and travel time. Although IKEA banked our money a month ago, I waited at home on delivery day but they never showed up. They didn’t bother to phone and cancel so yet more hours wasted trying to speak to someone on the premium 902 phone number. Five conversations later I was confidently informed that ‘maybe’ we will have a delivery next week.

Spain’s GDP to grow by 1.5% in 2014 Spanish Minister of Economy Luis de Guindos said that Spain’s economy would grow by close to 1.5 percent this year, the Europa Press Agency reported on Tuesday. De Guindos made this statement at Spanish parliament, where he also pointed out that the country’s economy would grow by close to 2 percent in 2015. Both forecasts are more optimistic than official predictions made in April, when the government said Spanish gross domestic product (GDP) would grow by 1.2 percent in 2014 and by 1.8 percent in 2015. De Guindos also said that the unemployment rate, which is very high in Spain, would also improve in September when the government will present new forecasts. The Spanish government had predicted in April that unemployment rate would fall to 24.9 percent in 2014 and to 23.3 percent in 2015, falling below 20 percent in 2017. According to de Guindos, the expected improvements in the economic situation are due to increases in domestic demand and exports. Domestic demand has been increasing for four consecutive quarters. The minister said that now Spain needs to strengthen the economic recovery in order to significantly reduce unemployment and increase income. Meanwhile, Tuesday also saw the Ministry of Public Administration publish new data about

public deficit, which stood at 2.35 percent of the country’s GDP as of May without taking into account the deficit of Spanish local governments. The figure, 24.418 billion euros (32.770 billion U.S. dollars), meant a 4 percent decrease when compared with the deficit of the same period in 2013. According to the ministry, the deficit of the central administration stood at 2.27 percent, the deficit of Spanish regions stood at 0.60 percent while the country’s Social Security system registered a 0.52

U.S. Stocks Fluctuate With Europe Equities Amid Bailout

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index fluctuated, after the worst week in more than two years, while European equities erased gains. Euro-area bonds advanced after Portugal announced a bailout for Banco Espirito Santo SA. The S&P 500 increased 0.1 percent at 10:17 a.m. in New York after tumbling 2.7 percent last week. Portuguese 10-year yields slid eight basis points to 3.62 percent while the Stoxx Europe 600 Index was little changed. Shares in Shanghai climbed to the highest close this year and Asian currencies strengthened. The euro traded at almost its lowest level versus the dollar since November. Commodities rebounded after a four-day decline. About $1.2 trillion was wiped from the value of global equities last week amid concern that a default by Argentina and the crisis at Espirito Santo would constrict credit markets as the Federal Reserve debates the timeline for interest-rate increases. Espirito Santo will get 4.9 billion euros ($6.6 billion), Portugal’s central bank said. Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. rose 1.4 percent after earnings topped estimates. “We’re seeing a reprieve of geopolitical concerns, which is modestly emboldening risk-taking for today,” Chad Morganlander, a money manager at St. Louis-based Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., which oversees about $160 billion, said in a phone interview. “The economy overall is moving forward with better-than-expected earnings, and we see an upward bias continuing over the next couple of months.” Portugal’s central bank now controls Espirito Santo, easing concern that the lender’s woes may spread. Most of its assets will be moved into a new company, Novo Banco. The lender’s shareholders and junior bondholders will be left with the most “problematic” loans, including those to other parts of the Espirito Santo Group, the central bank said in a statement yesterday. Spanish and Italian government bonds rallied with Portuguese securities. Spain’s 10-year yield fell seven basis points to 2.49 percent, approaching the record-low 2.45 percent set on July 30. The rate on similar-maturity Italian debt dropped six basis points to 2.70 percent. Treasury 10-year note yields slipped one basis point to 2.48 percent. “We’re seeing this as an idiosyncratic event,” Nicola Marinelli, who helps manage around $190 million of assets at Sturgeon Capital Ltd. in London, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “On The Move” with Jonathan Ferro. “If it spreads then yes, we could see definitely a spillover into the government bonds of peripheral countries but that’s not the case so far. It’s actually going to be good.” The euro was little changed at $1.3422 after earlier touching its lowest level since Nov. 12. Europe’s common currency slid 3.2 percent in the past three months as the European Central Bank cut interest rates to spur inflation that slowed in July to the weakest in almost five years. indian ocean fashion show ‘Unexpected Change at the THE MAGIC OF MOHSIN - six smashing ladies strutted their way to huge applause at the finale of the Indian Ocean Summer Fashion Show. From left to right these stunning ladies are Rita, Sue, Lynda, Jennie, Norma and Yvonne. Creana from Glamour Glamour was running the show and as always she did a fabulous job showing over 40 outfits in 40 minutes! Mohsin Reza owner of The Indian Ocean has joined the growing band of local businesses supporting The Children’s Home in Elche and never far away volunteer Lorraine Johnson was on hand to organise the raffle which raised €68 during the afternoon. Jon Tremaine an amazing magician entertained over 50 guests during the special “meal deal” lunch with his extraordinary brand of what he calls “Table Hopping Magic” and out of 70 guests at the fashion show many stayed to fill almost every table in this fabulous restaurant. There was also the launch of The “Curry Club” where free membership was on offer to all of the guests - the idea is that twice a month there will be a curry tasting day when you will be able to try several different foods for just €1 - yes that’s right just €1. At the Branch General Meeting held on Tuesday 15th July, the Branch Chairman, Terry Joy, chaired his last meeting due to his unexpected need to return to the UK to live. At the conclusion of the meeting Terry handed over his ‘Badge of Office’ to his successor, David Barnes. Throughout his 6 odd years as a member of the Branch, Terry was fully involved with branch activities and carried out several important roles. He acted a Branch Standard and National Flag Bearer whenever required and took on the role of Vice Chairman and eventually Chairman in February 2012. During this time, despite suffering a stroke early in 2013, he was soon back and as enthusiastic as before and led the Branch in it’s 10th Anniversary celebrations in March and he was already looking forward to the Battle of Britain Commemoration service due in September. There is no doubt he will be sadly missed for his tact and diplomacy in leading the Branch during his time a Chairman and for his very dry sense of humour. To complete the Branch farewell to

Terry and his wife Carol, a special ‘Farewell Lunch’ was held at the Rendezvous Restaurant on Friday 25th July. At the lunch Terry was presented with a specially engraved Tankard to remind him of his time spent with the Costa Blanca Branch of RAFA.’

JAGUARS

Written by Eric Arnold Announcement:• Special meeting in November, a presentation about all things legal about vehicles in Spain • Joint meeting between JEC Spain & JEC France, March 2015, a very special weekend. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain has now been in existence for just over 3 years, in that time we have been really fortunate with the weather, on Sunday 27th July, our luck continued, bright blue skies, if anything it was a little too hot, why do I mention this you

may ask, it is just that the last time we met at Restaurant La Harradure in Los Montesinos, apart from a few minutes here and there it pretty well rained all day long. One bad day in three years, not too shabby, we are so lucky to live in this fabulous climate. Restaurant La Herradura in Los Montesinos, is an old converted Finca with “oodles” of history. Great parking and a outside terrace where we initially congregated for pre lunch drinks. The typically Spanish lunch was extremely good for the measly 23.50 Euro’s charged. Served to us in the private hall, starting with a fabulous home made bread with tomato and aioli, the obligatory salad, deauphinoise potatoes, savoury crepes filled with black sausage, a light noodle soup, then a choice of Lamb, Loin of Pork or Fish, I had the Lamb, which, I have to say was not the best lamb I have ever had but all the starters were fine, dessert and coffee and all the water and wine you could drink. I have to say the wine was very good and it did help the day “flow” nicely. Pleasantly stuffed I think is a good way to describe the after lunch feeling. I would like to take this

opportunity to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members, and of course a big thank you to Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event. Bo Hammonds beautiful XK8 was awarded the prize for the “ladies choice”.. Some of the old favourites were there as usual, David Shea and his fabulous gold XJS Convertible. More examples of XJS’s, XK8’s, XKR’s XJ’s, X Types, quite a few new XF’s and a jaw dropping new XJ, “The Guvnors” XK8 Convertible. completed the collection this time. A total of 15 cars and 40 people, a good turnout considering we are in the “visitor” season. We have a few announcements to make, first the easy one, the next meeting will be on Sunday 28th September, venue yet to be decided, but I am sure it will be as good as usual. For the meeting on November 16th, which will be at Restaurant La Torreta, near Elda, we will be hosting a presentation from Pelicer and Heredia, a team of renowned lawyers, the presentation will cover all things legal relating to vehicles in Spain. And now The Big One, in March 2015, there will

be a joint meeting between JEC Spain and JEC France. The “pride of big cats” will meet at an 8th century castle in the north of Spain, a very special event that should not be missed. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is the largest of the worlds Jaguar Clubs, apart from joining in the fun at the meetings, members also benefit from a glossy 140 page A4 monthly magazine, Jaguar spares department and a technical advice service second to none. If you live in Spain and own a Jaguar you should be a member of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. The JEC in Spain is organised by Eric Arnold and Ian McMenemy. Eric can be contacted by email at jaguarspain@outlook.com or by phone on 609931647 or alternatively check out www.jec-spain.es or the JEC main web site www.jec.org.uk. Our Events director, Ian McMenemy can be contacted at McMenemy@JEC-events. com. Candy crush: the artworks that look like sweetshop nightmares

With its doughnut eyes, meringue mouths and Wotsit hair, James Ostrer’s edible art may be the stuff of nightmares, but it has also helped him kick his junk-food addiction

James Ostrer’s affair with junk food began in earnest after his parents divorced. Every weekend his father would collect the children (he was often late; it was a tense handover) and take them to McDonald’s, which Ostrer came to view as “a place of relaxation and fun”. Ever since, he says, “when I feel distressed, I will go straight for this kind of food.” Which, in a roundabout sort of way, is why he has spent at least £5,000 in the last two years on Mars bars, Jelly Babies, strawberry bootlaces and other sweets and crisps. This vast stash was not for eating, but to be used in human sculptures through which Ostrer would explore his relationship with junk food, and perhaps even rid himself of his addiction. He and others were caked in cream cheese that had been dyed lurid colours, inlaid with, as Ostrer puts it, “scientifically produced items developed to attract us without any nutritional value”. The photographs in which the artist documented this exercise are by turns grotesque, hilarious and tragic. They are the childhood dream of the gingerbread house – a world spun from sugar – turned nightmare. And appearing, as they are, in the same year in which the notion of sugar addiction has been widely accepted into the public consciousness and been blamed outright for the obesity epidemic, it’s hard not to see in them an element of harsh truth. Some of the caricatures that Ostrer has created, with their bulging gelatin eyes and misshapen heads, have an alien quality. Others use generic tribal imagery in a reference to ancient huntergatherers who, he imagines, had to endure multiple bee stings to score some honey. Now, he says, “you just have to stick your hand out and grab a whole pile of things from the checkout. It’s not special any more.” There are echoes, too, of Jake and Dinos Chapman’s Family Collection, which featured African-style carvings incorporating McDonald’s

Hack Attack by Nick Davies’s

When Nick Davies watched Andy Coulson in the dock waiting to be sentenced last month, he felt a twinge of sympathy for the man whose downfall, among other things, he had worked so hard to achieve. It was the anniversary of the publication by the Guardian of the Milly Dowler story, but that was not what came to Davies’s mind. Instead, he recalled the tape recording made by David Blunkett exactly 10 years ago this weekend. “I remember Blunkett’s voice,” writes Davies in Hack Attack, his gripping account of the phone-hacking scandal, “full of panic and fear as he pleaded for his privacy; and the sheer mechanical coldness of Coulson as he insisted on his right to convert this man to a headline. I remember all the others who suffered the same fate, left behind like roadkill as Coulson roared off into his gilded future.” It is the heartlessness with which the News of the World and the Sun broke people’s lives to push newspaper sales and enforce Rupert Murdoch’s writ that is so shocking and why it is now difficult to feel much sympathy for Coulson. Davies might also have remembered in that moment the hypocrisy of the people who worked on those papers, the fact that Andy Coulson, a married man, had a long affair with his boss, Rebekah Brooks (the demonic pillow talk between these two was sadly never properly explored in the court case), and that former News of the World journalists,

while setting about their victims in the paper, described some of their own office parties as “a model of drug-fuelled sexual adventures”. One lesson of this book is that when people such as Coulson, the News of the World’s news desk editor, Greg Miskiw, or the paper’s chief reporter, Neville Thurlbeck, looked in the mirror they suffered not a trace of unease about their behaviour, whether it was straight hypocrisy, lying, bullying or wrecking someone’s life. This was not a matter of law but one of morality, and to that degree all the defendants in the recent trial, and many more who were never charged, are guilty of serving a pitiless regime that went unchecked for decades. This book is important, not simply because it is written by a superb reporter who took on a seemingly invulnerable criminal conspiracy, or because it is, even after Leveson and the months of evidence in court, the best account we have of the phonehacking scandal and the attendant police corruption and coverups. logos and emblems. “Fifty per cent of the time,” says Ostrer, “you feel fucking awful about what we do to the world, how we get our T-shirts and food so cheap, and then the other half is: ‘Yeah, I’m having a great time, look at me under the blue sky driving a nice car.’” Along with the black humour, and monstrous quality of many of these sugar zombies, some, with their ornate headdresses and plinths, are intended to reflect the way that the young Ostrer worshipped marketing mascots such as Tony the Tiger. While immersed in this project, he says, “I’ve had dreams where these caricatures are telling me how I should live. To me they look like … this sounds a bit harsh, but if someone had poured acid over Tony the Tiger. It’s like they’re melting.” In Ostrer’s short film showing the making of one of the images, slathering people in gloop and chucking sugar sprinkles all over them looks a right laugh, like messy play for big people. But while the process was “intensely fun”, it was also therapy for all involved. “I’m the therapist and the client in all my work.” There is a ceremonial quality to the process, he says, which is as important as the final image. The whole thing looks less fun for the sitters, who must wear goggles under their fake eyes, and are temporarily rendered blind, dumb and paralysed, and sometimes have only a single nostril to breathe out of during the photo shoot. “Some people can sit there like a monk for a century,” he observes, “and then you ask someone very dynamic and together to stand still for 10 minutes and they’ll freak out. That in itself is very interesting for me and them. Emotionally, things come out from people.” Read more on: www.theguardian.com

Pineapple is a sweet, nutritious fruit that can help you meet the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Eat it by itself as a snack or as part of both sweet and savory dishes. Choose pineapples that are heavy for their size and have dark green leaves, and eat them within two or three days for best results.

Vitamin Powerhouse

Pineapples are cholesterol-free and fat-free. One cup of cubed pineapple contains 80 calories, 2 rams of fiber and 1 gram of protein. This serving of nutrient-rich fruit also p r o v i d e s you with 40 percent of the daily value f o r vitamin C, 10

Immune Booster and Disease Fighter

The vitamin C in pineapple may help lower your risk for heart disease, gout, cancer, lead toxicity, cataracts and stroke. It also provides a boost to your immune function, helping to shorten the duration of colds. The vitamin may also help to prevent high blood pressure and diabetes, according to the Linus Pauling Institute.

More Bang for Your Buck

Pineapple is a nutrient-dense food, rather than an energy-dense food. This means that it provides a lot of nutritional benefit for a small amount of calories. Nutrient-dense foods can assist with weight loss. They help you feel full without adding too many calories, and provide you with fiber and a number of essential vitamins and minerals.

Grave fears for circus animals kept in sweltering container A British family holidaying in Villa Joyosa near Alicante city have raised grave concerns about a group of circus animals kept inside a 12-metre container in sweltering conditions since Monday (July 28). Anne Rowe and her family witnessed Circo Nevada staff herding the eight horses and ponies, two camels and a monkey into the container after the final show finished on Monday night. She says the animals are only let out of the container to drink for five minutes each day and are not being properly fed. “They get brought out for a couple minutes for a little drink and then are returned to this container for the next 24 hours,” Anne said. “They would all be better off dead than living this terrible existence.” Sue and Rod Weeding from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation in Rojales plus staff from Alicante’s La Fundación Raúl Mérida, which deals with wild animals and circuses, are assisting with the

case and the police are expected to visit the site this week. “We’re doing everything we can to get the authorities to intervene but it’s quite difficult,” Sue said. “The problem with circuses is that they just move from place to place and once they’ve moved the animals, the whole process has to start again because they’re in a different province.” While some councils across Spain, including Guardamar, have banned circuses with live animals, the practice is still legal in most areas. “People need to be aware that this type of thing often happens with circus animals, they’re just not cared for properly,” Sue said. “Really, in this day and age it’s unbelievable that this still goes on. It’s really important not to support these type of circuses with animals.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys saved from abuse and neglect at its Rojales shelter, which is open every Sunday from 1pm-4pm. Entrance is free and guided tours begin at 2pm. Tasty food and refreshments are available in the garden café. The EHCRC welcomes any donations and sponsorships to help support their important work. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the centre’s network of eight charity shops are also gratefully

welcomed. The charity shops are located in La Zenia, Los Montesinos, La Siesta, Ciudad Quesada, La Marina, Pilar de Horadada and the brand new Gran Alacant store. Large donated items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items purchased from the charity shops. EHCRC is also looking for volunteers to staff its shops for a few hours or days each week. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. So That’s What You Have To Do #2

Many years ago I noticed that the standard of printing was seriously deteriorating; despite modern technology the printed word was coming out blurry. This situation didn’t seem to bother the printers, who were apparently content to produce woolly newspapers and blurry books, but it bothered me. To prove my point that printers were a lazy shiftless lot who were indifferent to the deterioration in the quality of the work they produced I took myself to the optician, namely SpecSavers in Honiton. After adorning my nose with an apparatus which would not have looked out of place in a Benny Hill sketch, and into which the optician

slotted umpteen different strengths and colours of lenses, he stood back and courteously informed me that I had ‘natural maturation of the short sight.’ Since then I have accepted glasses, and the idea that maybe the fault is with my eyes, not the printers. Until recently, when I noticed that after working on the laptop for any length of time my eyes get tired and want to quit, and that very shortly afterwards my brain suggests that it too is tired and wants to quit. Drawing on the lesson of experience I took myself into Federopticos Diaz, where I explained the problem, hinted that perhaps my eyes were at fault rather than an incremental failure of the laptop, and the Benny Hill scenario was repeated, but with a choice of English or Spanish. Boss Lady Ana, whose soothing manner and appearance would make her able to tame wild lions without the need of a chair and a whip, laid out the options open to me in josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

By Jos Biggs

order to correct my fuzzy eyes and fading brain. As the problem is only with the laptop, she suggested: Getting glasses to be used only with the laptop, which would mean a new prescription, and another pair of glasses. Or I could abandon my existing glasses, and get some sort of super-trifocals, which have three zones, not the usual two, thus I would be able to see the laptop and the world around me, but at a hefty price, and, she said, they take a lot of getting used to. She paused to allow this information to be absorbed by my little grey cells – and they were not happy! Oh! Woe is me! What shall I do?! ‘Or’ she said in tones softer than Asian silk, ‘you could move the laptop.’ Ah – Now why didn’t I think of that?

alqueria Remitpower

The Alquerian establishment once again tried to raise the country’s profile in the eyes of the industrialised nations. On paper the village republic was vying to take the initiative in the race for a viable renewable energy source. In reality there was a hidden agenda. A grant had been applied for and received from the Geneva based ‘International Authority for Daft Grants and Money Squandering’. This was to develop Alqueria’s Remitroot fuelled power station. Actually an old diesel generator still running on diesel but with a note saying, ‘Alqueria’s Remitroot fuelled power station’ sticky-taped to a jerry-can. The money was really wanted to supply and fit the new self-cleaning, motorised, tungsten reinforced outdoor/indoor bidet with integral torch and shoe-horn into every Alquerian home. The only country in western Europe with such a boast. This, the elders of the Pueblo thought would make Alqueria the envy of all. Unfortunately the Geneva based authority may have been gullible and inefficient but they weren’t altogether stupid. They sent a fact finding mission to see what had happened to their cash. Their unannounced arrival caused confusion and alarm. Manuela was given the task of looking after the impromptu guests. It was hoped that if anyone could distract a group of healthy middle-aged men she could. Meanwhile Poyato with touching but misplaced loyalty to his product, panicked and filled the generator’s fuel tank with Remitroot Advocaat. Now, Remitroot is as unstable as a Tory politician declaring his expenses. The resultant explosion was a joy to behold. On the pyrotechnic aesthetic scale it must have been somewhere near the very top. The yellow Remitroot Advocaat added a welcome colour contrast to the blast. The yellow fallout-cloud rose majestically

from Poyato’s workshop. It was then taken by the strong westerly breeze and descended as if by magic on the town’s plaza. The square was thronged with Saturdaynight revellers including the representatives from the international fact finding mission. Now, it has been stated many times that Remitroot is an aggressive aphrodisiac. The effect on the semi-intoxicated populace of Alqueria was spectacular, obscene and disturbing but spectacular. Manuela, who was charged with entertaining the delegation from Geneva took the full force of the descending cloud. Already of a ‘friendly’ disposition her mood was enhanced by the racy fallout. It took the delegation two months to get back to Switzerland and when they arrived couldn’t remember why they had left in the first place. It is said that it took the best European surgeons three weeks to remove the smile from their faces. John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

viewpoint

Another Fine Mess Now I don’t want people to think that I have an obsession with blood sucking bats or a fixation with sheep, heaven forbid - I don’t even possess a pair of green wellies – but after recounting some time ago about a creepy experience on Bodmin Moor, I recalled another episode in that magical part of England that involved both. If I had to list the happiest times in my life, the brilliant summer of 1972 has to be right up there as one of my most memorable in the Mother country. I had originally moved to Cornwall to get some sort of business up and running, but things rarely go as planned in my life and I found it virtually impossible as an outsider to break into the local scene as a roofing contractor. So I found myself working in a busy restaurant in that most chocolate boxy of all chocolate box villages - Polperro. This achingly beautiful collection of fisherman’s cottages and narrow winding lanes had been the main reason why, a year before, I had packed all my things into a spotted red handkerchief, tied it to a stick and with it slung over my shoulder set off for a new life. Working in a restaurant in a tourist hot-spot in the height of summer is not the easiest of occupations but I loved it. We worked our socks off for 12 hours every day, then partied ourselves silly every night. It was the perfect life for unattached young

people with long hair, flared coloured loons and a zest for living. Life was there to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck and shaken vigorously. And we did. * Late Saturday Night: My friend’s beat up Volkswagen Beetle lurched round yet another tight curve in the unlit country road, and once again I had to shout at him above the noise of the engine to slow down before we ditched the damned thing, but Jacko ignored me anyway and tore round the bend but this time with unfortunate consequences. There in the glare of our headlights was a woolly overcoat on legs – one moment looking very sheepish, the next looking very dead as the car hit it full pelt. We pushed what was left of the VW to the side of the road and ran back to tend to the unfortunate animal, which as we suspected was beyond help and were just preparing to remove it from the road when we heard the sound of a car approaching. As the headlights appeared around the curve, there was the sound of hastily applied brakes as the vehicle slewed to a dead stop. There was a moment of silence with us frozen in tableau, then with a shrieking of tires the driver of the car attempted a multi point turn in the narrow road. After ramming a tree and sending clods of earth into the air, it fishtailed off in the direction from whence it had come, still in first gear and screaming like an Osmond Brothers groupie. * Three Days Earlier: There was to be a fancy dress party on the coming Saturday night, but Jacko and I had

different ideas about what we should wear. He was intent on dressing up as his favourite movie character Dracula – how boring was that – whilst I thought it would be a blast to go as Laurel and Hardy. He was the size of Ayres Rock and I was a string bean, so it would be a perfect match I reasoned. Moreover, I knew where we could get hold of the perfect ill fitting suits, complete with bowler hats. But he was having none of it and it left me with the problem of finding another costume or me going as both Laurel and Hardy – perhaps I could say we were a schizophrenic? Then I had a brilliant plan – something I get on occasion - and I reckoned that it would satisfy the both of us at a stroke . . . we would go as Stan and Ollie vampires. How cool was that. And wonder of wonders, once the suggestion had filtered through to what passed as Jacko’s brain, he liked it too. * Saturday after Work: It started out as a good evening. A female friend had painstakingly made us up as two blood sucking comedians complete with pasty white faces, deep set dark eye sockets and fangs - and of course the obligatory gore running down our chins from crimson lips – all under two ludicrous bowler hats. Now here we were bent over a dead sheep in the middle of nowhere and some moron in a car was roaring off like a thing possessed without stopping to help. What’s wrong people I thought?

LAS COLINAS WELCOMES SMGS.

It’s always a pleasure to play at the venue that has recently been awarded the accolade “Best golf resort in Europe” and I would urge anyone who hasn’t yet visited Las Colinas to do so, it’s a first class facility in a beautiful setting. Thirty odd members & guests teed off from tee 1 & tee 10 in a two-ball better-ball competition which always makes for a less spread out finish. It also usually means that the groups who were first back into the clubhouse manage to stay more or less sober for the prize-giving! The course is in great shape & it’s that time of the year when the wonderful odour from the curry plants on the 15th waft over that section of the back nine. In the same part of the course teeing off on the 16th from the back tee-box into a bit of a breeze caught one or two out when they were a little over optimistic taking on the corner of the lake. The five NTP’s went to Tony Smale (5 & 14), Aled Owen (7), Robin Eastman (10) & Alan MacDonald (17). “Best front 9 not in the prizes” went to Ron Stenhouse & Mick Roscoe with 21 points & “Best back 9 not in the prizes” was claimed by Tony Smale & Matt Newman with 22. The 4 winning 2-balls in the main competition were -4th was father & son team Theo & Joost Boelhouwer with 41 pts; 3rd was man & wife pairing, Phil & Marg Birtwistle, with 42 pts; 2nd was Mike Jordan & Robin Eastman who were just edged out on C/B with their 43 by the worthy winners, Norman McBride & Keith Stevenson, also with 43 points. Congratulations to all those in the prizes! sport

for La Marquessa 30th July 2014

On this very pleasant day in history in 1979 Graeme McDowell is born in Portrush. In 2010 he became the first Northern Irishman to win the US Open, and the first British golfer since Tony Jacklin in 1970, with a one shot victory at Pebble Beach. Today was our 2nd Anniversary and I don’t think we could have found a better course with better facilities and a meal to die for, all for 50€. La Marquesa has, over the last year or so, made vast improvements and not just only to their course which now is in tip top nick. Yes the greens are a little on the slow side, but they always are this time of the year. 32 of us sat down after the competition to a 3 course meal, which included a half bottle of wine for a mere 12.50€ each and it must be said, there was not one hungry belly left at the tables. The food was excellent and the service was even better than excellent. The day was hot, sadly the golf wasn’t and one can say it was barely luke warm with not one golfer achieving par. The Best Guest prize went to a Sandra Twentyman’s School of Golf Banditry in the name of Peter Long with a steady 35 points and that was the top score of the day. Winning the NTP’s today was an art and even hitting the greens was one, so it seemed. A sleeve of balls went to Roy Rogers, John Hillier and Joe Dean who, it is believed, missed a “2” from just under 2 foot. Shelia has promised to give him some putting lessons. Simon Lee, on the other hand, secured TWO “2’s” and took away both last weeks and this weeks “2’s” money. The Silver Division seem to find this course a little tasking and it only needed 27 points for John Hillier to

Torrevieja Cricket Club

TORREVIEJA CC 244 for 6 ALFAS 2ND 109 for 4 After travelling all the way to Albir, Torrevieja were looking to repeat their win against Alfas 2nd team earlier in the year. Alfas won the toss and decided to field. Torrevieja started steadily but lost an early wicket Ciaran Guichard was caught at 1st slip for 1. 2 more wickets fell before Leigh Blann joined opener Adam Alger who had been working steadily and had amassed 31 runs. Leigh went and Michael Wareing entered the contest. He eventually was out for 34 but Adam was still grafting away. It was at this point that the captain and Adam decided to push the score along. What followed can only be described as a “ classic “ innings from young Adam who was eventually out for 155. This enabled Torrevieja to reach 244 off their allotted 45 overs. John Braithewaite (3 for 40 ) and W Ashraf ( 2 for 31 ) were the pick of the Alfas bowlers. Alfas then went into bat, but some tight bowling and a desire not to lose any wickets meant that after 20 overs, they had only reached 78 for 2. The bats men then “ shut up shop “ and after their allotted 40 overs had scored 109 for 4. Captain Lee Brown led the bowling attack with 2 for 36, ably assisted by Ciaran Guichard ( 1 for 19 ) and Hassan Ullah ( 1 for 24 ). This gave Torrevieja the winning draw for 14 points to 7 for Alfas losing draw. Torrevieja`s next game is away at La Manga on 17th August. take 4th spot. 28 points saw both Colin Marsden and George Smith on 28 points with the older of the two winning on countback for 3rd and 2ndpalces. No I am not going to say who came 2nd or 3rd, I will leave it at the “older one”! The Winner of the Silver Boys was Graham Smith with 32 points. The Gold crowd did far a bit better and it the delight on Roger Nilsen’s face when he found out not only did he come 4th with 30 points, but beat the Society Captain on count-back. A pair of 31’s saw Hans Arveson and John Eyre take 3rd and 2nd places and this left Simon “LUFC” Lee with a very credible 34 points to take home the bacon. Photo: Gold Category Winners Talking of bacon, today’s winners were rewarded with a meal for two at the very fine Indian Curry restaurant Punjabi Palace in Los Montesinos, for which we are grateful for the sponsorship. Our next game, Wednesday 6th August 2014, see’s us at Rodagolf course where for 30€ (plus 6€ for a buggy) you could join us for a friendly knock; so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Fixture Secretary on 966719604.

TORREGOLF.EU at Las Colinas

Friday 25th.July saw a full house of members returning to this lovely course for the 3rd. time this year and how we are looking to return again in October & December after what was a fantastic day of golf. Ok the weather is now making life a little difficult on the course but who cares when the grass is green, well maintained and greens though with a few blobs of brown and I mean not any bigger than a Euro coin, obviously repaired pitch marks! were in great condition and true.

Lo Marabu Golf Society

Lo Marabu Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Roda on 31st July 2014. For this month’s meeting a group of 16 players visited the established course at Roda taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Our numbers for this month were depleted by members returning to the UK or those with visitors from the UK and they missed a course that was in excellent condition and with very good greens BUT the weather was blisteringly hot and this impacted on the scores of the hot and bothered golfers. The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Winston Blackwood - 32 points 2nd – Jack Fanning – 31 points 3rd – Mike Probert – 31 points Best Front/ Back 9 holes – Julie Blinston and John Chatham Nearest the Pins – Mike Probert (2) and John Chatham Dog of a Day Trophy – Paul Greenwood After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their continued support. Mazda RX-7 – Most Wanted Cars 2014

The Mazda RX-7 was around for almost a quarter of a century before the front-engined rear-wheel drive coupe was axed back in 2002. The most famous model was also the last, the third-gen RX-7 that was introduced in 1991.

popularity and strong enthusiast following raises the question as to why Mazda has not yet considered reviving the famous moniker. However, Auto Express recently revealed Mazda is in fact in the early stages of development of a direct successor to the RX-7.

It remains one of the few classic sports cars to emerge from Japan and ever since its launch it has stayed faithful to the Wankel rotary engine. At 1.3-litres, the engine was smaller than some powertrains you’ll find fitted to superminis in today’s market but the RX-7 also employed sequential twin turbocharging to give an almighty power boost.

Our exclusive inside line revealed Mazda will stick with the Wankel rotary engine and target around 300bhp by implementing its latest SkyActiv technology. It will also be based on the upcoming Mazda MX-5 platform and be larger than the four-seater RX8 which was discontinued in 2010.

The rotary unit was the only engine on offer and developed around 250bhp, which was deployed to the road via the rear-wheels. Gearbox options included a four-speed automatic and five-speed manual.

The reborn icon could arrive as soon as 2017 and Mazda could opt to use the lowslung two-door coupe body of the original RX-7 rather than the four-door configuration of the RX-8 in order to shed weight.

The RX-7’s fierce

motoring Mazda RX-7 (1978 – 2002): the history

The first generation Mazda RX-7 arrived in 1978 as a replacement for the Savanna RX-3. Just like the RX-3, the car was called the Savanna RX-7 in its home market. The RX-7 mk1 was powered by a 1.1-litre Wankel rotary engine and had a front-engined rear-wheel-drive layout that would set the template for three more RX-7 generations. The Turbo version of the RX-7 was launched in 1983, boosting power to 163bhp at 6,500rpm but by 1986 the new second-generation RX-7 had arrived on the scene. The standard rotary engine was now up to 1.3 litres and 146bhp with the 1987 turbo model offering 182bhp.

The RX-7 was getting serious and by 1989 a facelift brought updated styling, improved engine management technology and a higher compression ratio seeing the RX-7 Turbo model to 200bhp. The car still tended towards the softer end of the sports car market - there was even a convertible version from 1988 onwards. It wasn’t until the third generation RX-7 showed up in 1991 that its reputation as a performance car would be cemented. The unit in the Mazda RX-7 mk3 was a sequential twin-turbocharged rotary engine with a 252bhp output that was increased to 276bhp by the time the plug was pulled in 2002. Read co.uk
