Apple’s iPhone 6 set to launch on 9 September:
Rumours claim the firm is gearing up for a ‘big media event’ Last year, Apple announced its iPhone 5S and 5C at an event on 10 September, before revealing its updated iPad range a month later. The claims were made by tech site Recode, but no official invites have been issued yet, and Apple has not confirmed the date. However, sources speaking to Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal have also quoted the 9 September as the day Apple chief executive Tim Cook will unveil the new devices. Apple is expected to reveal a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model at the event, which is said to include a thinner, case - similar to that seen on last year’s iPad Air - an improved camera and a faster
processor. It is likely to retain the fingerprint scanner introduced on the iPhone 5S. The event may also see the debut of a 5.5-inch ‘phablet’ handset. And if Apple follows suit from last year’s event, the rumoured iPad Air 2 could launch in the last week of October, alongside a watch. Earlier this week Apple filed for Healthkit trademarks in the US and Europe ahead of iOS 8 being officially launched, said to be next month. The software could be launched at the same media event on the 9 September. Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

News Recorded Unemployment in Spain Fell by 29,841 in July Month-on-Month
Over the last 12 months, the number of people registered as unemployed in Spain has fallen by 278,954, and the year-on-year rate now stands at -5.94%. This rate has fallen by more than 18 points since the high of 12.5% recorded in May 2012. The accumulated reduction in recorded unemployment in the first seven months of the year – a total of 281,478 people – is the highest since 1998. Unemployment increased by 32,357 in seasonally-adjusted terms, which corresponds with the historic trend, whereby since the year 2000, seasonally-adjusted unemployment has increased each July, except in 2004. Recorded unemployment among the under-25s has fallen by 24,075 over the last 12 months, which is a year-on-year decrease of 5.8%. Unemployment fell in 14 regions, led by Galicia (-12,031), Castilla y León (4,220) and Andalucía (-3,487), while it increased in Aragón (3,317), Murcia (1,689) and Madrid (550). By economic sector, when compared with June, recorded unemployment in July showed the following changes: the agricultural sector rose by 424 (0.19%), the industrial sector fell by 9,798 (-2.11%), the construction
ort
sector fell by 14,714 (-2.56%) and the service sector fell by 12,518 (-0.45%). In addition, the number of first-time job-seekers rose by 6,765 (1.79%). The number of new employment contracts recorded in July amounted to 1,645,236. This represents an increase of 137,895 (9.15%) over the same month of 2013. In turn, the accumulated number of employment contracts in the first seven months of 2014 amounted to 9,485,971, representing 1,243,684 more employment contracts (15.09%) than in the same period last year. A total of 114,071 permanent employment contracts were recorded in July 2014, which account for 6.93% of all contracts and represents an increase of 17,733 (18.41%) over the same month last year. An accumulated total of 772,536 permanent employment contracts were recorded to July 2014. This represents an increase of 104,383 (15.62%) over the same month of 2013. For the fifth consecutive month, permanent contracts rose by around 20%, reflecting the current dynamic nature of the job market, which corresponds to the figures contained in the Active Population Survey and in the rise in National Insurance contributors. Could ants solve GLOBAL WARMING? Insects remove carbon dioxide
from the atmosphere, study claims
They may only be tiny, and live for just three months, but ants could be the key to solving climate change. Rough harvester ants have been found to ‘weather’ minerals in sand to produce calcium carbonate, also known as limestone. When the ants make this limestone, the process traps carbon dioxide in the rock, ultimately removing it from the atmosphere. It is unsure how the minerals are converted, however, and theories range from ants licking the sand, to excreting the substance. The discovery was made by Professor Ronald Dorn from the University of Arizona Tempe. Professor Dorn buried sand at six sites in the Catalina Mountains in Arizona, and Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, 25 years ago. Every five years, he measured how much the minerals olivine and plagioclase degraded in the sand, and discovered the ants break down minerals up to 300 times faster than sand left undisturbed. Professor Dorn believes the ants collect calcium and magnesium and use these elements to make the limestone. The conversion may occur when ants lick sand grains in order to stick them to the walls of their nests. Alternatively, the limestone could be created from bacteria in the insects gut before it is excreted. This process is similar to what’s known as carbon sequestration. Natural carbon sequestration is the process on Earth that manages the carbon dioxide expelled by animals, plants and humans. Trees and the oceans help convert or trap this carbon dioxide. There are also artificial carbon sequestration schemes that involve manually trapping this carbon dioxide in the ground. One proposed method is ocean sequestration, in which carbon dioxide is placed deep in the ocean, forming lakes of the gas. These gases stay where they are due to pressure and temperature of the surrounding water, gradually dissolving over time. Another method is geological sequestration where the carbon dioxide is pumped into underground chamber, or into areas full of magnesium and calcium. Carbon dioxide reacts with these elements to form limestone and magnesite. It is this latter method that Dorn believes the ants perform naturally. But, Professor Dorn claims it is still unknown how much atmospheric carbon is removed by the ants. The findings are published in the journal Geology. Earlier this month, British scientists at the University of East Anglia said leafcutter ants could save lives thanks to a natural antibiotic they produce. The pioneering research by the School of Biological Studies centred on a particular type of fungus the ants eat, and how the ants’ natural resistance protects it. Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

The Cucaracha Club is go!
Siesta Productions commence shooting their Spy thriller, The Cucaracha Club, here on the Costa Blanca on 1st September. This is a community project where all actors and crew donate their time for free. Consider this; Siesta have enlisted a Hollywood actor and top UK TV actor for FREE! No mean feat. Now add to that virtually everything Siesta needs has been provided free – boats, cars, locations, logistics and much more. It’s taken a lot of hard work to get this far. Whilst MOST of what Siesta needs they’ve got for free, there is one thing that will cost and that’s post production – putting it all together after it’s been shot. Siesta have even managed a good deal on this too and this is where you come in. All they need is 1000
people to donate just €10 each and they’ll be home and dry. There are also product placement opportunities available – get your brand noticed around the world forever. Every time the film is watched in the cinema or at home on DVD, your brand is in their face. Think about it! Aston Martin took a risk on product placement over 40 years ago with a low budget spy movie and now they’re associated world wide with a particular name. How much? Less than a full page ad for one month in the press. The film will be submitted to all the major film festivals around the world and Torrevieja Tourist Office will also be using the film to promote the area. This is a winwin opportunity. For more information and to donate, please visit their website www. siesta.productions

LA FUENTE PAYS ITS RESPECTS
Whilst on Monday evening the lights were dimmed across the UK as a sign of respect to those who gave their lives during the Great War it took two holidaymakers from Sheffield to bring the observance to the Costa Blanca. David Pearson had been busy organizing a commemorative event in his home town at Mosborough Rugby Club but when a holiday opportunity arose he had to leave the final preparation with colleagues as he and his family took the opportunity to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine. So with time on his hands here in Spain, and with nothing planned in the local area, it seemed only natural that he arrange a similar event at a local bar. James Dumbreck was delighted to offer La Sahara Bar in CC La Fuente as a venue. The Royal British Legion Recruiting Officer Jim Watt became involved and the event
began to take shape, culminating with the commemorative act on Monday night as bar owners, restaurateurs and members of the public united with thousands of people across the UK to dim their lights, leading up to the moment at 11pm that Prime Minister Herbert Asquith declared Britain’s involvement in the conflict that would go on to claim an estimated 16 million lives. The commemoration follows on from the words of the then-foreign secretary Sir Edward Grey, who said portentously after the declaration “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” In the UK, the Houses of Parliament, Broadcasting House, home of the BBC in London, and St Paul’s Cathedral, as well as hundreds of councils, iconic buildings, national organisations, including the Royal British Legion, took part in the ceremony. Blackpool illuminations, the Eden Project, the Imperial War Museums and Tower Bridge also went dark. In the minutes leading up to the ‘dimming of the lights’ at CC La Fuente, David was joined by Lisa Gascoigne, a schoolteacher, who has spent the last months introducing her students to this significant period in history at the Westfield Secondary School in Sheffield.
News
The pair set the scene and recited letters and poems from the time. The event concluded with ‘The Last Post’ which was rightly dignified, as many dozens of holidaymakers rose and stood silently to pay their respects, for each a personal gesture in remembrance of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us 100 years ago and who must never be forgotten.

Good lighting
You might not realise you’ve got bad lighting but you’ll recognise the symptoms: headaches and sore eyes, frustration in the kitchen at not being able to see what you’re doing and arguments in the bedroom over whose turn it is to get up to switch out the light. Good lighting will make your home feel spacious, clean and welcoming. The key is to create a flexible scheme that takes you right through the day and all the different uses of your room. At the flick of a switch, you should be able to transform it from a bright, vibrant living space to the setting for a romantic dinner for two.
Use artificial lighting to control glare and maximise the available natural light in northand east-facing rooms.
•S outh facing: warm light all day, although it changes throughout the day and year. The midday sun is usually so bright it flattens everything out. Choose south-facing rooms for the kitchen, main living areas and other rooms you spend a lot of time in. •W est facing: sunlight at the hottest part of the day, which can cause glare. In the late afternoon, you’ll get long shadows and softer light.
Natural light It’s a fantastic asset to any home, but the quality of the light depends on the aspect of the room. •N orth facing: cold and harsh rather than direct sunlight. Artists choose north-facing studios because the light gives truer colour rendition. •E ast facing: bright first thing in the morning followed by long shadows and no sun later in the day.

Home & Garden
Their problem is that they grow too well! If left to their own devices, they will rapidly take over your garden. Mints were used by the Greeks and Romans both for flavouring food and as a medicine. They can be harvested for at least six months of the year when grown outside, and are superb when used to flavour meats (lamb is best known), vegetables (especially new potatoes and peas), salads, tea and jellies. Where To Grow… Mint is very tolerant of almost all conditions, but like all plants it will grow best in certain conditions. The soil should be well-dug, fertile and water-retentive, but not water-logged. Whilst mint will grow well in full sun, it does not like dry conditions. Its preference is therefore for partial shade, and it is well suited to a North facing wall Propagation… Mint is sold at most garden centres in small pots. Mint has shallow, creeping roots which can be broken off and placed either directly in the ground or in pots containing potting compost. Because mint is such a strong-growing plant, it can easily kill nearby plants. The solution when planting outside is to sink a bottomless container, such as an old bucket, in the ground and plant the mint in this area. The roots might not be stopped 100%, but it will do the job. Another alternative is to dig a hole to a depth of 30cm (1ft) and line it with black plastic (pierced with small holes for drainage). The soil is then replaced in the black plastic and the mint planted in that area. Care of Mint… Mulching the soil will go a long way to keeping mint happy - it will achieve the all important job of
keeping a moist root run which mint likes so much. A twice yearly feeding with bonemeal will keep it even happier. Remove the flowers by hand as soon as they appear because if left, they will reduce the amount of leaves. There is very little else to do except enjoy it. Mint suffers from only one disease and that is rust - allow it to get a hold and it will kill all your mint plants. There are chemical sprays for rust, but they can often be only a part solution. The best method is to examine each plant carefully for signs of rust (orange blobs generally on the underside of the leaves) and remove any leaves affected - spray as well with a chemical if you want. If this does not remove the infection chop the plant down to ground level and burn it all - drastic, but the only cure in the late stages of rust infection. Recommended Mint Varieties… Choosing a variety of mint is a matter of personal taste. However, for starters, shown below are a few tried and trusted varieties: Spearmint (Mentha spicata) - a traditional mint for mint sauces. A strong grower with attractive dark green leaves. Alpine Mint Bush (Prostanthera cuneata) - try something different, mint leaves with pure white
Mike Locks S.L. Galvit
M is for Mint There are nearly a thousand varieties of mint, but only six or so are worth cultivating. They are easy to grow in both shade and sun and require very little maintenance needed.
flowers, a herb with true beauty. Chocolate Mint - really does taste a bit like mint chocolate! A novelty worth a try? Harvesting Mint… Basically, cut the leaves when needed - a pair of scissors or nipping with the fingers both work well. It pays to cut the top leaves first, because this will encourage the plant to shoot out again further down the stem. Never strip the plant of all its leaves. It is possible to store the leaves in a warm place to dry, but some of the flavour goes. Container Growing… This herb is ideally suited to container culture and will grow happily in potting compost. Attention throughout the year is minimal. Water if the compost is drying out, and feed with liquid plant food monthly throughout the growing season. Container grown plants are more likely to affected by severe frosts, so move the containers close to the house walls in colder months.

Pink Ladies event at La Fuente C.C.
On Saturday 9th August Maria and the Pink Ladies hels a charity event at La Fuente Commercial Centre in aid of the AECC. The day was a fun day for all the family with live music provided by Maisey Carey, Claire Louise, Celena Deans, Vice Versa duo, Alan Scott, and Stevie Spitt, the whole day was presented by Dan Davey for Sunshine FM. The highlight of the day was when Caroline Brzezinski had her hair completely shaved off in support of her friend Shirley who is undergoing chemotherapy treatment at present in her fight against cancer.
Situated at the northern tip of the sherry triangle, 8km from Cphipiona, the delightful small town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda is flanked by the Guadalquivir estuary. The speciality tipple here is the distinctive manzanilla wine, which acquires its dry, slightly salty tang from the seaside environment and the moist poniente wind. The town is equally famed for its excellent seafood, for which manzanilla is (coincidentally!) the ideal accompaniment. The town dates back to Roman times. Later the Moors built a defensive fort here which evolved into a major port under the Catholics. Columbus set sail from Sanlúcar in 1498 and, a few decades later, the Portuguese, Ferdinand Magellan set off to circumnavigate the globe from here, in search of a westerly route to the spice islands of Indonesia. Unfortunately, he was killed by local Indians in the Philippines. Today, the town is divided into the older quarter, the Barrio Alto where most of the interesting sights can be seen and the newer Barrio Bajo, closer to the river. The Sanlúcar beaches are also magnificent and stretch several kilometres to the south-west, while the former port and fishing quarter, the Bajo de Guía is unsurprisingly where some of the best seafood restaurants can be found. The horse racing takes place along a 2,000 stretch of beach at the mouth of the Río Guadalquivir. A thrilling spectacle, where real racehorses thunder across the sand watched by a large noisy crowd of spectators. There is nothing amateur about this event; expect to see spectator stands, bookmakers, paddocks and, of course, the winners enclosure. Now an international event with horses from other European countries taking part - and many famous names amongst the spectators - this is a serious competition with the total
prize money amounting to millions of euros. The 2014 edition of the Sanlucar de Barrameda horse races will take place from Aug 21st, to Aug 23rd racing usually starts around 6pm The horse racing officially dates back to 1845 when the the Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos de Sanlucar de Barrameda was formed. However, even before this organisation held its first ‘official races’, the event had been staged informally for years, by locals, who raced the horses used for transporting fish from local ports. Some time after its beginnings, the Sociedad handed this evermore prestigious event over to the Ayuntamiento for management; it was then included in the town’s summer programme of ‘municipally sponsored‘ events and has become known as one of the most important “fiestas” in the region! In 1981, the Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos de Sanlucar reformed and took back the reigns of the annual races, and the Sanlucar Horse Races are now part of a national series of equine events that take place in Madrid, San Sebastian and Seville. Should you with to experience the Sanlucar races live, get to the beach as early as possible to stake out a good place for an exciting event held at a unique venue!
The day was a fantastic success and over 1800€ was raised on the day towards the AECC early detection program and into research. Hopefully you will be able to feature this in your next issue as Caroline s bravery deserves to be recognized. photographs show Caroline after her hair was shaved and the group shows Maria and some of her pink ladies and some of the artists who donated their time and performed on the day.

Dehydration happens when your body loses more fluid than you take in. When the normal water content of your body reduces, it upsets your balance of minerals (salt and sugar), which affects the way that it functions. Water makes up over two-thirds of the healthy human body, lubricating joints and eyes, aiding digestion, flushing out waste and keeping skin healthy. Some early warning signs include: • f eeling thirsty and lightheaded •d ark coloured, strong-smelling urine •p assing urine less often than usual Who is at risk from dehydration? Anyone can become dehydrated, but certain groups in particular include: •b abies and infants; they have low body weight and are sensitive to even small amounts of fluid loss •o lder people: they may be less aware they’re becoming dehydrated and need to keep drinking fluids •p eople with long-term conditions, such as diabetes or alcoholism •a thletes: they lose a large amount of body fluid through sweat What to do If dehydrated, drink plenty of fluids, including water, semi-skimmed milk and diluted squash or fruit juice. It’s best to avoid fizzy drinks or caffeine if possible. If you’re finding it hard to keep water down due to vomiting or diarrhoea, try drinking small amounts more frequently. If left untreated, severe dehydration can be serious and cause fits (seizures), brain damage and death.
What a fabulous month of July FLABELOS had with new members joining – especially Karen an M.S. sufferer and wheelchair user. My lazy left foot is beginning to be less inclined to roll over.” Another success at Vibra Gym is Cherry who joined in March and along with dieting lost 3 stone with the help of our vibrating plates also losing a massive 20 ½ inches. When should I see my Doctor? • f eeling tired (lethargic) or confused •d ry mouth and eyes that don’t produce tears • n ot passing urine for eight hours •d ry skin that sags slowly into position when pinched up • r apid heartbeat •b lood in your stools (faeces) or vomit • l ow blood pressure (hypotension) Preventing dehydration Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends you at least six to eight glasses of fluid daily. The FSA recommends semiskimmed milk, diluted fruit juice and diluted squash. If you’re active, or if the weather is particularly hot, there’s a greater risk so you should increase your fluid intake. Source: Almeria Angels

The Jazz Singer gets his Could the moon fuel Earth for 10,000 years? claws out for Pets in Spain China says mining helium from our satellite may help solve the world’s energy crisis The lunar dirt brought back by mankind’s first moonwalkers contained an abundance of titanium, platinum and other valuable minerals. But our satellite also contains a substance that could be of even greater use to civilisation – one that could revolutionise energy production. It’s called helium 3 and has been dumped on the moon in vast quantities by solar winds. Now China is looking to mine the moon for the rare helium isotope that some scientists claim could meet global energy demand far into the future, according to a report in The Times. Professor Ouyang Ziyuan, the chief scientist of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program, recently said, the moon is ‘so rich’ in helium 3, that this could ‘solve humanity’s energy demand for around 10,000 years at least.’ Helium 3, scientists argue, could power clean fusion plants. It is nonradioactive and a very little goes a very long way. This would require mining an areas the size of Washington, D.C. The isotope is so rare on the Earth because our atmosphere and magnetic field prevent any of the solar helium 3 from arriving on the surface. The moon doesn’t have this problem as there is nothing to prevent helium 3 being absorbed by the lunar soil. Fabrizio Bozzato, a doctoral candidate at the University of Tamkan in Taiwan, recently wrote in World Security Network that helium 3 could be extracted by heating the lunar dust to around 600°C, before bringing it back to the Earth. The gas, he estimates, has a potential economic value of $3 billion (£1.78 billion) a tonne, making it economically viable to consider mining from the moon. According to experts in the U.S., the total estimated cost for fusion
development, rocket development and starting lunar operations would be about $20 billion (£11.8 billion) over two decades. While China has expressed an interest, it has yet to outline concrete plans about how it would mine the moon for helium. The prospect, however, raises the controversial issue about who owns our satellite. The United Nations Outer Space Treaty, signed by China, suggests that lunar resources are for all mankind. However, legal experts claim the language is ambiguous enough to allow for commercial exploitation of the moon. In a recent paper, Mr Bozzato said: ‘China appears determined to make [lunar mining] a reality of tomorrow. ‘China maintains its lunar mining would be for the benefit of all humanity,’ he added. ‘However, given the absence of willful competitors, it is also speculated that the Chinese intend to establish a helium 3 monopoly.’ Private enterprise is also interested in using fuel from the moon – although possibly by extracting water rather than helium 3. The Shackleton Energy company envisages providing propellant for missions throughout the solar system using lunar water. Some teams vying for the Google Lunar X-Prize also see mining as an ultimate goal of their landers. ESA has also considered using the Moon to help missions farther into the Solar System. Arguments have also been made for mining Helium-3 from Jupiter, where it is much more abundant – it would need to be given the distances involved. Extracting the molecule from Jupiter would also be a less power-hungry process. Source: www.dailymail.co.uk
Geoff Watts returns to Spain from the UK to do his one and only show as “The Jazz Singer” at Restaurante Los Rosales on Saturday August 16th. As a supporter of Pets in Spain he has invited them to do the raffle on the night. Geoff who lives in the UK, heard how the animal charity are now opening a second shop on La Marina urbanisation, opposite Soterin DIY in Avenida Londres. With so many feral cat colonies not being attended to the size of them is growing, along with the mass suffering that lack of veterinary care brings. As an animal lover the talented showman wanted to help with fundraising for the new shop, which is specifically for the ‘Welfare and Sterilization of Feral Cats’. Recent events have spurred Pets in Spain to join forces with cat lady Linda Scales and the PAWS team of volunteers to tackle this huge problem. By working together and opening this second shop the feline population can be kept in check, minimising the possibility of feral cats being a nuisance in the
neighbourhoods where they roam. Donations and items to sell for this very worthy cause can be taken to the new Pets in Spain charity shop, or call 645469253. The Jazz Singer show has always sold fast, and this show looks like being no different. It is expected that once again delighted Neil Diamond fans in audiences will sing along to Sweet Caroline, America and many other fast favourites. The seamless joint at the beginning of the show with the real Neil Diamond singing, leading into Geoff taking over always amazes audiences with the authenticity of his voice wherever he goes. Tickets for this exclusive show are only 12 Euros for the show and 2 course meal. SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014
braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. As many of you good readers know, I do my little bit for the Albox Computer Club based at Jack’s Bar on a Friday morning, where annually paid up members get my help for free during class time! The club has, over the course of the years, devised a list of programs (usually free) that are used to maintain the speed and health of your computer; or are best for presentations; word processing (paying more doesn’t always mean getting the best product); and so on. It is quite a laborious task to hunt for, and download these programs. Every purpose designed program out there like ‘Ninite’ will only download a subset of all your favourite programs and inevitably, automatically install them. For most of you, this is all you want, and rightly so! For me, as ‘keeper of the chips’ (doesn’t that sound sad:-) ), I have to find and download currently 22 programs which usually takes about two and a half hours! This week I found, installed and started to learn a programming language to create a program that would download a list of files to my computer. From here I can copy them to the club memory chips and the members have only to copy them to their computer and install them, saving an hour and a half on the time I had to taken to get them in the first place. University required me to study several computer programming languages: Pascal; C; C++; DBase and BASH to name just five. The simplest was Dbase because it was a scripting language, followed by Pascal and then the rest. The great thing about a scripting language is that it is interpreted language and making corrections is quick and easy. This programming language is also a scripting language that can be compiled when working to a standalone program. Scripting = Interpreted = Slower run speed = Quicker to write and get
right = Easier. Compiled = Converted to Binary = Much faster programs = Slower to get right = Not so easy. Not a tough choice really! Go for the Scripting language that can then be compiled into a Binary program when your get it right! Within 2 days of getting it the program was at version 1, 2 days after that it was at version 1.1 (minor changes but made the program much more efficient. I can’t increase the speed that the programs download but my little program does it far more efficiently than I can!! My next task is to write a database for the charity arm of AlboxCC, which is based at the multi-servicio building in Arboleas, to monitor what computers are donated to us, the current state of repair and where they eventually end up. I am going to write it in this scripting language for speed then have a compiled version for speed. Version 1 gets started on Monday, which means by the time you have read this it should be about half done! Scripting programs are great for simple but repetitive tasks and in this instance much more complicated tasks. What is the name of this wonder software? AUTOIT and guess what! It’s free (now there is a surprise). Just a few cautionary words before I leave. First programming is a logical progression through the problem. Anyone can create a list of anything but making this list readable and elegent is something that only time and clear teaching can help you with. If you want a quick and dirty script to change the names of all your photos to “photo xxx” - xxx being a number then this will do it perfectly :-) Happy programming :-) I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further article that will be useful to you.

This planet we share
With the world’s population approaching 7,000,000,000 we must look like a giant colony of ants to any beings viewing us from space. Whether or not Global warming is believed to be caused by human activity the proof that our planet is a warmer and more unstable place can easily be seen. On a local basis Almeria is suffering a drought with the lowest winter rainfall in decades. With the desalination plant and deep water wells to fill the taps it’s more an inconvenience rather than a life threatening event. Though in some areas such as Turre and Albox the mains water is so contaminated it’s regularly deemed as unfit for use. Luckily Gabriel Amat the President of Almeria also sits on the board of water company Galasa, so apparently the best solution for Turre is to buy all future water from Galasa instead of ensuring the towns’ water independence by repairing the wells and pipes. The 5.1M ‘earthquake’ in Lorca a few years ago was a result of the tectonic plates slipping after years of heavy water extraction for irrigation under the town. Just as
Good TV, Worse TV
You’ll have seen this American police show I’m sure...or if not this particular one, then one very like it; Close up of young American lady with mouth full of perfect teeth; “Oh no-is he...hurt?” “He’s more than hurt Marcy...he’s, he’s...left us...” Poor Marcy I say! Or maybe, it’s poor us, because, isn’t this just the sort of stuff that’s on TV, time and time again? Let’s have something different! Wouldn’t it be great if, just once, the crime was so complicated that the police officer who’d never previously been beaten, admitted that this was just too difficult to solve and that they should all go home, admittedly leaving Marcy, Deacon, Madison or whoever is hysterical this week, in the dark. Although it would only last a few minutes, my bet is that the show would be remembered for years as one of the best episodes anyone had ever seen! And we’d get the chance to have a tea and a chat too. And you see, this is my point today. How many television shows, or films do we watch, with that ever growing niggling feeling that we’ve seen this one before? It’s not just because there’s a small pool of actors who keep cropping up in these shows time and time again, although that certainly seems to be the case. We recently finished watching the Inspector Morse series and I swear that some of the baddies had appeared, playing different characters in the show, more often than the late John Thaw. Don’t you find that the formula for many police shows often-with some exceptions-goes something like this; crime is committed, baddie is nowhere to be seen, hero/heroine appears, cracks jokes, biffs a few people, maybe falls for baddie, baddie is caught, hero/heroine gets all the praiseeven though his/her slightly barmy sidekick did 90% of the work-and we end on a joke that has everyone smiling to the camera. Maybe it’s time for television executives to be brave and give us a break from crime shows. I’d like to suggest that they look no further than Canada where they’ve introduced a new sport-underwater hockey! No, I didn’t believe it either but it’s true and it’s very popular there. With the addition of, let’s say, the odd giant squid and a few circling, snarling, sharks, this could knock the spots off crime dramas and even stop us longing for Eldorado to return...maybe! hydraulic fracking for oil can cause seismic tremors; the fact that the water table had dropped by 250 metres in just 50 years radically changed the pressures on the rocks below Lorca. This resulted in the devastating earthquake as the epicentre was just three kilometres underground. The effect on nature is visible too, in Lubrin the other day I saw an old Oak tree dead from drought. The effect on us is just that the view isn’t as nice, the hardship for the wildlife means not only a lack of water but less food to eat and less cover to hide in. Oaks have very deep root systems so with the lack of rainfall the water table is dropping yet the local wells keep extracting this dwindling resource for farmers to grow water hungry crops such as oranges, peppers and tomatoes. The filling of swimming pools uses huge amounts of water as the water evaporates quickly in hot weather. Measures such as covering the water surface when not in use and using filtration pumps at night reduces water loss. My wife will testify to my dislike of baths, not that I am unclean I hasten
to add but because bathing uses so much water. I don’t understand how sitting in dirty bathwater cleans anyone, showers are cleaner and use less water. Even showering can be wasteful especially when washing hair. Simply turning the water off whilst lathering up saves water. I was dismayed to read a few days ago that Lubrin Council have issued special licences to allow the killing of the beautiful (and usually protected) wild Ibex. These shy and elusive creatures are venturing down into the valleys looking for food and chomping on farmers’ crops. A lack of food and water on the hill tops means they will either die of hunger or from a hunter’s bullet. Surely some cleverly sited water butts and a few bales of hay is a better option than murder. A petition has been organised by locals to stop the killing and can be signed in the Cajamar bank in Lubrin. A few years ago one sunny summers Sunday evening; we were
having an al fresco dinner with friends when the dogs suddenly stood up attentively. There 50 metres or so above the house on the craggy hilltop behind the house was a family of seven Ibex. Such a wonderful sight as they quietly grazed, with one of them silhouetted against the evening sky as it stood as look out. Luckily the dogs had just been fed and the evening too hot for them to climb up and investigate. So we down below gazed at the Ibex high above us and they looked down at us until eventually they rounded the hill and disappeared.

Further to the concerns over Samaritans in Spain using a 902 number
Not all 902 numbers are premium rate numbers. Sadly Telefonica have lumped premium rate and premium service into the one 902 range. Whether the number is premium rate or premium service depends on the fourth number. 902 followed by 1,2,3 or 4 are premium rates costing up to four times the standard rate, and from which the receiving company benefits financially. 902 numbers followed by 5,6,7,8 or 9 are to provide a premium service, from which the receiver gains no financial benefit, but does benefit from a premium service. For example the charity Samaritans in Spain uses the number 902 88 35 35, hence the fourth digit is 8. This means that the number is not connected to any local telephone exchange. What this allows the Samaritans to do is have several phones in several locations attached to the 902 88 35 35 number. This means that whenever someone calls their number, whether they

are calling from Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella, and the Balearics or wherever, they are connected to a listener. And it doesn’t matter where that listener is physically located. All for the same fee! All Samaritans in Spain calls to 902 88 numbers are charged at national call rates. From landlines and public phones the connection charge is €0.08 plus €0.04/min: Mon-Fri 20:00-08:00, weekends & public holidays and €0.07/ min: Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00. Sadly calls from mobiles are considerably more. For most providers the connection charge is €0.12 then €0.22/min: Mon-Fri 20:0008:00, weekends & public holidays and €0.36/min: Mon-Fri 08:00-20:00 It is so sad when we read that ALL 902 numbers are premium rate numbers when only some are. Many, like Samaritans in Spain are premium service numbers which actually benefits both the caller and the receiver.
REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT
Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you maybe exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_ of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds).
STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially presummer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENTOF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. News Toddler sparks White House security lockdown
Security officers locked down the White House after a toddler managed to squeeze through the bars of the north gate. Sticking with protocol, Secret Service chiefs closed off access to the building and Pennsylvania Avenue. Armed officers dashed across the famous lawn after the alarm was triggered. After being apprehended, the young
trespasser was reunited with his parents. And it looks like he will escape any charges. “We were going to wait until he learned to talk to question him, but in lieu of that he got a timeout and was sent on way with parents,” Edwin Donovan, spokesman for the US Secret Service said. C.D. Thader de Rojales Last week the Thader players had their first training session under the watchful eye of new Dutch coach Danny Hoekman. There were many new faces in the squad and of course it´s early days to judge how good the new players will be. Yesterday we had our first pre-season friendly at home in Rojales. Our opponents were Novelda ‘ B’. Thader started brightly but after five minutes it was the visitors who took the lead when a visiting player found himself one on one against our new keeper. The striker made no mistake and confidently put the ball away. Apart from a chance which fell to our new number nine, Ibra, we had to wait fifteen minutes for our first real effort on goal which brought a good save from Novelda´s keeper. Two minutes later Ibra made up for his earlier lapse and equalised for Thader with a calmly taken goal. Ibra was now looking dangerous whenever he got the ball and indeed he
scored again a few minutes later to send us into the break 2 - 1 up. Both teams made wholesale changes for the second half On the hour the home keeper made a good save from a volley from outside the area but minutes later he fluffed a save which allowed Lloyd to head into an empty net to make it 3 - 1 to Thader. Thader then brought on a new keeper, a seventeen year old English lad named Daniel. After seventy five minutes Marcelino scored after another error in the Novelda defence and we were 4 -1 up. Five minutes from the end Thader scored yet again but in the final minute Novelda were awarded a penalty and reduced the score to 5 - 2. A good start then by Thader and a thoroughly entertaining game of football. Next Saturday we have another friendly, this time at home again to Sporting Saladar. Kick off is 1830. The 2014 Perseid meteor shower will peak between August 10 and August 13. A waning Gibbous Moon (the Moon’s phase after a full moon) may make it harder for observers to see the shower. Despite this, astronomers suggest that observers try their luck to catch some Perseids before dawn on August 11, 12 and 13. The Perseid meteor shower, one of the brighter meteor showers of the year, occur every August, peaking around August 9-13. Consisting of tiny space debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle, the Perseids are named after the constellation, Perseus. This is because, their radiant or the direction of which the shower seems to come from lies in the same direction as Perseus. The constellation lies in the north-eastern part of the sky. While the skies light up several time a year by other meteor showers , the Perseids are widely sought after by astronomers and stargazers alike. This is because at its peak, one can view 60 to a 100 meteors in an hour from a dark place.
Where to view The Perseids can be viewed by observers in the Northern Hemisphere. If you are planning to view the shower, look between the radiant, which will be in the north-east part of the sky and the zenith (the point in sky directly above you). But don’t worry, you do not have to make any major astronomical calculations. Just lay a blanket on the ground, lie down and let your eyes wander around the sky - you will be bound to spot the shower sooner or later.
When to view The best time to view the Perseids, or most other meteor showers is when the sky is the darkest. Most astronomers suggest that depending on the Moon’s phase, the best time to view meteor showers is right before dawn.
How to view There isn’t a lot of skill involved in watching a meteor shower. Here are some tips on how to maximize your time looking for the Perseids: Get out of the city to a place where city and artificial lights do not impede your viewing If you are out viewing the shower during its peak, you will not need any special equipment. You should be able to see the shower with your naked eyes. Carry a blanket or a comfortable chair with you - viewing meteors, just like any other kind of star gazing is a waiting game, and you need to be comfortable. Plus, you may not want to leave until you can’t see the majestic celestial fireworks anymore. Check the weather and moonrise and moonset timings for your location before you leave, and plan your viewing around it. www.timeanddate.com

With retirement savings dwindling, more and more of us are wondering if we’ll be able to retire as planned. Many baby boomers, especially, will have to keep working long past traditional retirement age just to make up for the beating their retirement plans have taken in recent years. Or maybe not... It’s quite possible that you can still retire as planned…and maybe even retire earlier than expected. How? By retiring overseas... A foreign retirement isn’t for everyone, of course. Family obligations may be an issue for some people. Others might not be comfortable in a place where they don’t speak the language. But if you’re the adventuresome type…or if you’ve dreamed of living in an exotic location–maybe on a sultry tropical beach, in a pristine mountain hideaway, or in a sophisticated, culturally rich city–with better weather and a lower cost of living, retirement overseas may be for you. If you dream of moving overseas, you probably look forward to a lowstress, affordable lifestyle. It’s likely to be a healthier lifestyle, too. Here are some reasons why.... Warm climate Most of us dream of retiring someplace warm. Snow and cold are things we gladly leave behind with our old 9-to-5 lives. And when the weather is warm and sunny, it’s easy to spend more time outside in the fresh air. Before you know it, you may ease into an active lifestyle with lots of exercise…which health experts agree is key to keeping us looking and feeling young. Some expats actually choose an overseas destination because they can practice a favorite sport there, such as golf, hiking or fishing.

Others take up a new activity once they move. If you’re near the sea, for instance, swimming or strolling the beach may become part of your new routine. If you live in a city, you may soon be walking to shops and markets, or just exploring your new home town on foot. When adventure or fresh discoveries lie around every corner, long walks don’t feel like exercise. Healthy eats With a warm climate comes a long growing season for fruits and vegetables. Expats often praise the quality and freshness of the produce they can buy locally. You can choose to eat junk food if you want. But fresh, exotic produce can tempt you to eat more healthily. If you do, your health—not to mention your taste buds—will thank you. Of course, in warm weather it’s also tempting to lie by the pool and just do nothing. That’s okay, too—it lowers all that unhealthy stress. Social life Fresh air and sunshine can also help you make friends. (Health experts say that social networking helps us live longer, too.) Ever stayed home from a social event because you couldn’t face a cold, wet night out? In your new warm-weather home, you’re more likely to ask, “Where’s the party?” and enjoy the evening stroll there and back.

What A Rate Rise Could Mean For Overseas Buyers
ben.simkins@taxesonline.es
Brits in the market for an overseas home in the second half of 2014 should factor in an interest rate rise in the UK, as well as the exchange rate, when budgeting for their foreign purchase, warned the Overseas Guide Company in August. “Servicing a mortgage in the UK is going to get more expensive within the next six months, that’s a given,” said Richard Way of www.OverseasGuidesCompany. com “Owning and running a foreign home costs money, even without a mortgage against it, so anyone considering a purchase abroad should ensure they are comfortable with their cash-flow in the UK and

consider what the effect of a hike in the interest rate would have on their monthly outgoings. We might get some clues as to how imminent a rate rise is after this week’s Bank of England meeting. “The other major consideration for buyers is the exchange rate. Sterling has had a bullish first half of the year, with gains against the euro and dollar. But again, anyone buying abroad with a mortgage later this year, should build a cushion into what they can afford in foreign mortgage repayment to account for movements in the value of Sterling, as well as interest rates affecting the mortgage.” Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

UK house prices in May to July were 10.2pc higher than the same three month period in the previous year, elevated by a continuing housing supply crisis in Britain. The new data showed a quarterly increase of 3.6pc and a month-on-month rise of 1.4pc, depsite the traditional summer slowdown in the housing market. The average house price was £186,322 in July, according to the Halifax, which was up from £183,825 in June and was the highest level since April 2008. Even so, house prices on the Halifax measure at £186,322 in July were still 6.7pc below the all-time seasonallyadjusted high of £199,612 seen in August 2007. However, the annual rate of growth has halved from the period of April to June, which saw a massive yearly house price jump of 21pc. This reinforces recent official figures from the likes of the Office of National Statistics, and Hometrack, which show the rate of house price growth month-on-month grinding to a halt. Despite this slow down in the annual growth rate, Halifax reported that the majority of UK home owners think that the next 12 months presents the best time to sell. The latest Halifax Housing Market Confidence Tracker indicates that sentiment towards selling is rising as fears

grow that property values could reverse - while new buyer demand is dropping. Over half of those (57pc) surveyed by the lender believe they should sell within the next year to capitalise on price, compared to 32pc. This is the highest score of this measure since the survey’s inception. “In London, the trend of selling up from more central zones to get better value and more space in suburban or commuterbelt locations will also continue. Many recognise the significant arbitrage opportunity that now exists and want to maximise this opportunity to cash in,” said Adam Challis, head of residential research at property group JLL. “However, some have been trapped in low or negative equity scenarios since 2009 and are only just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel that will enable them to move on.” Data from Hometrack showed that house prices in Britain have stalled as the number of new buyers plummeted in July and consumer sentiment shifted from over-zealous to cautious. The rate of house price growth fell to its slowest rate in 18 months - according to a leading survey of estate agents. This drop in the growth of property values is a result interest fears, new, tighter mortgage rules and aggressive rhetoric from the Bank of England that a “hot” UK housing market, in the south east, is the biggest threat to the economic recovery. “The Halifax data adds to the current uncertainty over the true state of the housing market,” said Howard Archer, chief economist at IHS Global Insight. “Furthermore, an appreciable rise in mortgage approvals reported by the Bank of England in June fuels uncertainty as to whether the recent loss of momentum in housing market activity is likely to be lasting or just a temporary development related to changing mortgage regulations.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion
“Someone told me you can tell if a person’s monogamous by the size of his testicles. Gene sent me to a genetics expert to settle the bet.” The Rosie Project is just one of professor Don Tillman’s ideas to indulge his passion of science. The Wife Project is the first, followed in hot pursuit by the Father Project, culminating in the Don Tillman Project and of course the Rosie Project. Take a 39 year old geneticist called Don whose brain is wired or configured differently from the majority of people, a brilliant scientist but rather socially challenged and you’ll be right in assuming he has Asperger’s. Ironically he lectures on Asperger’s but when asked who shows symptoms of obsessive behaviour he doesn’t recognise his own behaviour as being autistic. He quotes Lazlo Hevesi in the Physics Department. He is “literal-minded to the point of lunacy.” Don doesn’t display any emotion, everything is logical and scientific. He cannot empathise but he can memorise intricate details. His lack of social skills leaves him isolated and he has two friends but he plans on rectifying this and the Wife Project dominates the early part of this quirky love story with a difference. He
arrival thinking she is a candidate for his Wife Project. He soon decides on her unsuitability but warms to her and discovers that she needs to trace her biological father. Rosie’s mother died when she was 10 in a car accident. Phil, her mother’s partner saved Rosie and has brought her up as his daughter. Don abandons his Wife project in favour of finding out Rosie’s real father. Tracing all likely candidates proves to be an entertaining exercise, taking swabs surreptitiously, even stealing toothbrushes for DNA sampling and travelling together to the States enables this oddball of a couple to get closer but can they ever experience a normal relationship? Doubtful. But a worthwhile read. This is the debut novel from Simsion. Watch this space because the sequel The Rosie Effect is due out soon. Publisher: Penguin. ISBN: 978-1-403-91279-2

One of the things I really appreciate about the Church of England is its use of the Lectionary; a book suggesting three sets of Bible Readings each day, designed to cover the whole Bible in three years. One benefit of this is that, when preparing a sermon, I’m encouraged to use the scripture suggested, which may well be one with which I’m not particularly familiar, rather than keep using personal favourites. So, this last Sunday, the Old Testament reading set for the Evening Service we hold in Albox, was the account of the break-up of the Country of Israel (fairly topical these days, with all the troubles there), some 3000 years ago, following the death of King Solomon. The Country, at the time was tribal, and many of the other tribes had felt that the King had always favoured his own tribe of Judah, so the leaders of those other groups approached the new King, Rehoboam, requesting a more equitable deal for the future. Sadly, as is often the case with inexperience, Rehoboam, anxious to appear strong and in control, rejected their request, promising instead a tougher, more controlling regime, whereupon those ten tribes declared unilateral independence, forming the Northern Nation of Israel, leaving Rehoboam ruling over just the Southern tribe of Judah – from which ‘Judaism’ and ‘Jew’ are derived, and into which tribe, Jesus was later born. Strange therefore that today, the descendants of this one tribe of Judah, call themselves ‘Israel’ and are claiming the right to all the territory previously occupied not just by themselves, but also that belonging to the separated Northern Kingdom. So what can this story teach us? Well, as Proverbs 15 remarks “A soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger”, which seems very much the key to this story and a very important lesson for us to learn. How much better and more productive to be conciliatory rather than confrontational; to negotiate rather than demand. How vital a lesson, not just for politicians, but for all of us. HEALTH BENEFITS OF
avocados
Healthy brain: Dr. Daniel G. Amen, author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life considers avocados as one of the top brainhealthy foods that can help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. The folate in avocado contributes to preventing the formation of brain tangles that are considered a factor for Alzheimer’s. Avocados combine brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids with natural vitamin E, which has been clinically proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease from progressing and even reversing it in its earliest stages. Healthy heart: Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats that boost heart health and help lower blood pressure. Avocado monounsaturated fats contain the phytonutrient beta-sitosterol, which was clinically proven to lower LDL and triglyceride blood levels while raising HDL. Avocados’ vitamin B6 and the natural folic acid

from their high amount of folate help regulate homocysteine, which if high is a harbinger of bad heart health. The natural vitamin E and the master antioxidant glutathione in a base of avocado’s monounsaturated fat’s oleic acid are also recognized heart health boosters. Eye health: Avocado contains the carotenoid leutein, an antioxidant that specializes with protecting the eyes from oxidative stress damage leading to poor vision, cataracts, and macular degeneration. Digestion: Nutrients and enzymes in avocado reduce inflammation in the stomach and small intestine’s mucous lining. This also improves the body’s ability to absorb carotenoids and nutrients. A study’s participants who ate salads with avocados absorbed five times the amount of carotenoids than those who did not include avocados. Carotenoids include beta carotene and lycopene. Beta carotene is a precursor to vitamin A, and lycopene is a compound that reduces stroke and prostate cancer risks. Blood pressure: The combination of avocado’s high potassium content, 30 percent more

Inflammation is considered the basis of most non-contagious diseases. Avocados have an abundance of plant phytonutrient polyphenols and flavonoids, which have been discovered as anti-inflammatory agents. Anti-aging: The master antioxidant glutathione supports the liver and the nervous system. It is responsible for replenishing and recycling other antioxidants in the body. It is vital for a strong immune system, and avocado is one of the few foods that contain a considerable amount of glutathione. Cancer: Avocados can help protect against prostate and breast cancers. monkey’s selfie Wikimedia is allowing its users a vote to decide a dispute with a photographer over a monkey’s selfie photo. David Slater was on a trip to Indonesia when an endangered crested black macaque grabbed his camera and started taking hundreds of pictures. When he looked at the shots, he spotted an incredible selfie of the grinning ape staring right into the camera lense. The picture went viral in newspapers, websites and magazines across the globe and
the Gloucestershire photographer’s work was thrust into the internet spotlight. But he now faces a legal battle with Wikimedia after the organisation added the image to its online collection of royalty-free images. Spokesman Tomasz Kozlowski said: “The work did not originate from Mr Slater as by his own admission he did not take the picture, the monkey did. However monkeys can’t and don’t own copyrights.” Read more on: www. orange.co.uk

with me following behind, obedient but superfluous. However, having located his Holy Grail, it was up to me to find a salesperson and enquire whether the Tablet in question had an instruction book. The selected Sales lad responded to my question with a sympathetic look, and explained that they don’t have instruction books any more, implying that instruction books had gone the way of the quill pen, and were now only to be found in museums. ‘I’ll give you the Web address, it’s quite easy to download the instructions.’ He volunteered encouragingly. ‘But it’ll all be in Spanish!’ Pete bleated. I kept silent; I was not looking forward to trying to translate instructions that I probably wouldn’t understand even in English. The lad looked at the two despairing dinosaurs in front of him; relics from a bygone age, when people
wrote things by hand using fountain pens, and his heart melted. ‘One moment’ he said, and disappeared. Seconds later he reappeared, with almost a quire of paper in his hand. Stuffing it in the shop printer he said ‘I print it for you. In English.’ Now that’s service, over and above the call of customer care! So where do the skirts and blouses come in? We left Media Markt and I suggested we could go home now. Pete turned on his most mulish expression. ‘We’re not going home until you’ve bought something!’ I could see that resistance was futile, so we headed for C & A where I scooped up 2 skirts and 3 blouses and headed for the Probadores with the intention of mollifying Pete by buying one of these items. They all fitted, so I bought them all – I shopped over and above the call of josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk necessity!

Are You Being Served? Nope!
The new Zenia Boulevard shopping centre near Torrevieja appears to be a great success. Living nearby as we do, we often just drop in for a coffee and something sticky at whatever time of day that takes our fancy. And whilst it’s to be expected that during the summer months the numbers are swelled by the presence of an influx of tourists, we have found throughout the year that the car parks – with a total capacity of 5000 - are always well filled and there seems to be a constant flow of shoppers seven days a week. What seems to be doing particularly well here is the evening restaurant trade and if you are travelling to anywhere other than the boulevard on the N332 after 7pm, you will have undoubtedly uttered a few naughty words as you encountered the lengthy tailbacks in both directions. Most of the restaurants and tapas bars are located on the second level overlooking the Plaza Mayor - a large open area with a raised stage at one end. With free entertainment every night at this time of year, it adds to the pleasure and overall atmosphere of the plaza and is a very agreeable way to spend a fun evening with friends. That’s if you are lucky enough to secure a balcony table. But even if you can’t, there is a large screen over the stage that often transmits the action to the greater audience and seated diners beyond. All this is great of course and

in these worrying financial times, it is particularly satisfying to see businesses doing well with so many new jobs provided. From our observations the eating houses are packed to capacity during the summer months and every weekend throughout the year – if we get there later than our usual time and our chosen establishment is full, then we simply move on to another until we are lucky enough to get a table. Many of the really popular ones that will not take reservations often have queues of potential customers eager to eat there. However . . . We had dropped by the centre last weekend for a specific item that my lovely lady wished to enquire about. But as it was late afternoon and I had no great inclination to go home and do my Gordon Ramsey routine in the kitchen (lots of cooking and even more swearing), we decided to stay on and grab a meal. The lunch hour rush had finished and it was in that inbetween time before the early diners started to converge on the place, so there were seats available almost everywhere. We were spoiled for choice and decided on an establishment where we had eaten on several occasions and where we could sit outside on the terrace facing the glistening Mediterranean about a mile away. Hard uncomfortable bench seats, but hey, you can’t have it all. There were just four of the twenty or so tables occupied with a total of ten people, all of whom seemed to be either eating or had finished their food. We sat and waited for five minutes, but nobody came and nobody acknowledged our presence. As there were no menus on the tables, I walked to the bar area and took two.
We browsed for a few more minutes, selected what we wanted and still nobody came. There appeared to be one active waiter, with three others sitting at a table at the far end of the terrace chatting. In addition there was a bar tender and a gentleman who was standing at the door where we had entered, drinking coffee. It was unclear at that point who he was as he had not greeted us as we passed close by him, or handed us menus which is the normal procedure. Still none of the waiters came anywhere near us, nor did they signal that we would be attended to and remember, the place was not busy with only a handful of customers. So we decided to give it a few more minutes and then if nothing happened, we would jump ship. Which is exactly what happened and we simply walked across the terrace into the neighbouring restaurant, where incidentally we received immediate attention. Cue Mr Coffee Head who suddenly sprang to life. It appeared that he must be either the manager or proprietor, because to our disbelief, he pursued us into the adjoining restaurant and accused us of impatience and stated that we had only been waiting for two minutes. Needless to say we read him his horoscope. Service, quality and consistency are the key ingredients to running a successful restaurant. Every customer is important - even if you think that you will be packed to the rafters every evening. We will not be returning.

over and above
I am not an enthusiastic shopper. Hunger, or a lack of toilet paper will send me to Mercadona, but to go shopping just to go shopping is not my idea of a day well spent. So how come that I bought 2 skirts and 3 blouses which I didn’t actually need? I already owned 9 skirts and 14 blouses, enough for any occasion, I would have thought, so why did I suddenly feel the need to add to my already bountiful wardrobe? It was a result of a shopping stand-off, and I lost! Pete wanted a tablet – the sort you tap, not the sort you swallow, so we headed off to Media Markt in Lorca. He homed in on the object of his desire,
alqueria
35
viewpoint
When the temperature reaches 37 degrees people start behaving very oddly. Above and below this point they are fine but when 37°C is reached people become strange, an inverse to the norm. Odd behaviour is not alien to Alqueria and its people, in fact some argue it is normality itself. As the mercury crept towards body heat the people of the Pueblo started agreeing with one another. A concept as alien as the truth is to a politician. This harmony was nerve-racking, it only increased tension. It was so incompatible with the ambience of the Pueblo, it simply didn’t work in Alqueria. All this bonhomie was unfortunate as the first riot of Summer was due to ‘kick off’ mid-morning. Rioting is important to Alqueria. It establishes a pecking order, it strengthens barrio bonds and reaffirms the hatred that one section of the population feels for the other. With the heat of the day now at blood temperature an unnatural quiet descended on the Village. People waved, cars stopped to let children and dogs cross roads, young ladies smiled at old men and vice a versa. It was scary. Normally it only took the merest glimpse of a person from the opposing barrio and everyone started oiling their respective metaphoric rifles. A problem in logistics was looming. If the riot didn’t take place it would throw the whole carefully crafted schedule of civil unrest out for the year. Fortunately Manuela’s soul was so dark and sinister she alone was unaffected by the 37° glitch.
37°C
Determined not to let her arsenal of cobblestones, carefully selected rocks and specially broken bottles go to waste, she devised a plan. Manuela knew the people of Alqueria and she knew what would make their blood run cold. She let it be known that the Prattsborough Morris Men would give daily performances in the Village Plaza every evening for a month. This information was whispered and spread through the Village like the flu virus in a bordello. Loco Paco hid his Saharan Dung Beetle Benjy for fear of it being trodden to death during one of their performances. Antonio Poyato wept openly and took to the bottle. The Village was a chill place. Alqueria was suddenly very calm once more, a fundamental silence fell on the Pueblo, it was almost tangible. The first projectiles struck a minute or so later. The Hill People attacked the Newcomers who resisted and then counter-attacked. Windows shattered and plumes of smoke spiralled into the evening air. Manuela surveyed the scene with a warm satisfaction. That warm glow one gets from normality and the familiar returned, comforting, no matter how hideous.
advance moves
Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that
tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

SPORT & motoring The Volvo V40 By Tim Saunders
despite this it is certainly distinctive with hints of earlier Volvos. The test model is finished in a rather conservative metallic silver where perhaps a louder colour such as sky blue might be more befitting as indeed might black alloy wheels... Inside, the luxurious interior features heated and cooled front leather seats, air conditioning and all round electric windows. This is a fast, slick sports car that is also a good size five door family hatchback. It is not just fast but also safe thanks to its plethora of safety features which include intelligent cruise control. When this is engaged it automatically measures the distance from the car in front and brakes and accelerates accordingly. Parkers, the car experts, say: “Volvo, sick of BMW and Audi taking the limelight in the medium hatchback segment, has thrown down a gauntlet in the form of its V40. An all-new car, the Volvo V40 is a sleek and classy looking five-door hatchback that will target the likes of the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Engines include a low-tax 1.6-litre diesel engine that emits just 94g/km of CO2 with a claimed average fuel economy of 78.8mpg. That means it’ll be seriously efficient and cheap to run for company car drivers and private buyers alike. Volvo also offers a version with a T5 petrol engine that produces 254bhp, allowing the V40 to get from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds. Typically, Volvo safety is high on the list with all manner of active systems that are available as standard or as optional extras. It is the first proper five-door hatch that the Swedish company has made for a long time, and because Volvo wanted a car with a low-slung bonnet it had to think outside of the box to conform to pedestrian safety standards. So, it stuck an airbag under the bonnet. This unique system features a bank of seven sensors in the front bumper Facts at a glance T4 SE (Nav) 5d that activates the airbag if it thinks the car is about to hit New price range: a pedestrian. The system then lifts the rear of the bonnet £18,995 - £31,900 clear of the engine and puts a cushion over the base of Engine: 1.6-litre the windscreen and front pillars. Inside there’s Top speed: 140mph some nice touches including newly designed seats, a Power: 177bhp frameless rear-view mirror and a backlit gearknob.”
Hills show a car’s mettle I live in an area rich in a variety of differing landscape, which ranges from flat to steep. Just round the corner is a particularly awkward hill for those walking up it or pushing a pushchair. I know. So when I drive many cars up it there are few that actually surprise me in their ability to tackle it. But the 1.6-litre 177 bhp Volvo V40 T4 does. Bear in mind that even nowadays most cars still prefer to be warmed up before being driven. I never have the time to do this and so no sooner have I started the metallic silver five door hatchback it is confronted with this hill. We’re in second gear and it flies up it without a stutter. I am impressed. Deep down I will always be a petrol head despite the fact that necessity demands that I drive a more sensible and efficient diesel. The Volvo is a remarkably fast family hatchback that will hit 60mph from standstill in 7.5secs and go on to 140mph! It’s a phenomenal car; a five door hatchback that sits low to the ground like a sports coupe. It therefore doesn’t disappoint when being driven. The driving position is first class. The seats are supportive. The six speed manual gearbox is slick. And it sticks to the road and corners at speed brilliantly, giving the driver supreme confidence. The ride is quite hard as one might expect from a sports car. After all this is a T4; the particularly sporty Volvo. I’m a little unsure about the design of the rear but
Marquez stays unbeaten in 2014 with 10th MotoGP win A PREDICTABLE but hardfought win by Spain’s Marc Márquez means the secondyear MotoGP ace has made it 10 on the trot, riding to victory at literally every race this season. The current reigning world champion, who scooped up the title in his rookie year and dashed compatriot Jorge Lorenzo’s hopes of hanging onto it, has broken another record at Indianapolis Speedway. Nobody has won 10 races in a row since Australia’s Mick Doohan did so 17 years ago. The REPSOL rider, 21, fell back to fifth in the beginning despite starting from pole, but caught up very swiftly to take the lead from Lorenzo who was being tail-gated by his own Yamaha team-mate, Italy’s Valentino Rossi with the latter’s compatriot Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) lying fourth. Dovizioso’s swift set-off, thanks to his newly soupedup Ducati, meant he was initially at the head of the pack, but a brush with his fellow Italian on the fifth lap as they battled it out for the lead meant Márquez had ample room to storm ahead, having already pulled himself back up to third position on lap two. Yamaha riders Lorenzo and Rossi, who already has nine world championship titles to his name, fought it out gamely until around halfway through the race when the younger man squeezed ahead to win by a 1.8-second advantage over the former and 6.56 seconds over Rossi, who came in third. The UK’s Cal Crutchlow, riding for the first year with a factory team and his second year in MotoGP, is struggling

At FONT DEL LLOP GOLF RESORT – August 1st This is the fifth year the Summer Cup has been held at Font del Llop and is now establish as the “oldest” competition at the delightful challenging Blake Stirling – Marco Martin designed course, it has the characteristics of an American Scottish layout and provides a test for the Secretaries and Captain of the Costs Blanca and Costa Calida Golf Societies. Real Murcia Demoted!
Yesterday the Liga de Fútbol Profesional made public announcement that all fans of Real Murcia had dreaded, Real Murcia S.A.D have not been allowed to register in the Liga Adelante (2nd Division) due to lack of financial control! Close to 1000 Murcia fans had travelled to Madrid to protest outside the offices of the LFP in what would become a dark day in Murcian Sporting history, this now means that the club can only register in the Segunda B division and a huge fall from grace after last season finishing in the play off places and coming so close to promotion to La Liga. The LFP have also stated that Real Racing Club Santander could register in the league after promotion from the Segunda B group 1 but with huge supported backlash last season when fans attacked the Directors box during a Copa del Rey fixture. CD Mirnades have been given the go ahead to apply for the position and they are currently looking over the paperwork to see if they can raise the capital and a squad to be able to compete at that level. It remains to be seen what will happen with the Segunda B group 4 as fixtures had already been released and a major reshuffle should now come into effect. We will try and keep on top of all the news over the coming days. What are your thoughts on the issues? Do the LFP need to look at a restructure of TV rights throughout the leagues? CLAPTONS GOLF SOCIETY This was a long awaited INTER-SOCIETY CUP MATCH
annual cup match. After much controversy the two captains tee’ed off on the 1st tee at 10am. The sun was already high in the sky and beaming down on us. The course, as usual, looked in prime condition and I am sure due to much hard work by the greenkeeping staff. Well done. This year we had a first and tenth tee start so we had both lots of members going in two directions. We gradually got to the last tee at 10.40am with the El Raso ladies bringing up the rear. The sun got hotter and hotter and the air thinner and thinner, but nevertheless the day saw us bringing in some really good scores, but unfortunately this year we had to give the cup back to El Raso by a paltry five points. Better luck next year everybody. Everybody having finished and the cards collected we made our way back to make ourselves ready for the evening’s festivities at the Club House, Mono’s Bar and Restaurant, where we would be accompanied by our partners. The main part of the evening was by the way of
a hog roast supplied by Dave and Jenny of La Marina, and what a hog roast it was. With over 100 guests it took quite a long while for the winding queue to finally diminish, well done Dave and also many thanks to his helper chef Bernie. Hog Roast over we then proceeded with the prize giving and the results are as follows. The main feature of the day being the cup match ended with a win for El Raso 376 pts to Clapton’s 371. LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY
TMGS Match Report
In the summer when days are hot I Iike to find a shady spot And hardly move a single bit And sit and sit and sit and sit. What a wonderful thought, but instead of sitting we spent all day in the sun trying to put a little white ball down the hole. Alicante was a good back drop for our 4th major of the season, the greens and fairways were in good condition all with plenty of grass to play from. The water hazards were a problem for some as they acted like a magnet for the ball but the course was a good test of golf. The heat took its toll on our vitality but everyone survived the day even though it took over five hours for some to finish. An evening meal had been arranged so plenty of time after the game for a bit of recuperation before going to the Tavern. On the major days the Society like to ply some of the money back to members, so the evening meal and entertainment was free for those playing on the day and only a small amount was charged for partners and guests. Thanks go to The Tavern staff for prov-
ing the evening meal much enjoyed by everyone. The presentation of the prize went like this: The winner of the Summer Cup: Brian Coultate with 34pts 2nd Eddy Downing 32pts 3rd George Stewart 29pts 4th Malcolm Morrison 28pts NTPs: George Stewart hole 3, hole 6 Paul Flanaghan, hole 8 Chris Nield, hole 12 Dave Norton and holes 15 and 17 John Dunnion. Even though we had 6 nearest the pins there were no 2s recorded so a triple roll over for Altorreal on the 20th August. The free game draw was won by Brian Coultate.
San Miguel Golf Society received its usual friendly welcome to our monthly visit to the flagship Quara course. Beautiful greens & fairways greeted us, just some necessary scarifying taking place on the teeboxes was the only slight blot on the green & pleasant landscape. It was a welcome change to be teeing off at a slightly cooler time of the day with all of us underway before 10am. It took another good hour or so for the early overcast conditions to be burnt off as the sun rose higher in yet another blue & cloudless Spanish sky......doesn’t it get boring? - yes, it certainly does but it’s boring & beautiful. It was the final round of the annual eclectic competition and apres golf discussion revealed quite a few players who had managed to add the odd 3 or even 4 pointer to their previous efforts. All will be revealed at next month’s big bash Captain’s night on 27th Sept.......places for both the golf (24th) & the big night itself are going very fast so book a.s.a.p. to avoid any disappointment The 4 NTP’s went to Les Wilton (6),
Graham Cockayne (9), Andy Whiteley (13) & Steve Davis (17). The 2 top scores from the visitors were Dean Holmes with a tremendous 41 points & Alan Tickner with 33 points. Bronze division’s top 3 were Ian Parkinson in 3rd (34), 2nd was Chris Hamblett (35) & Norman McBride took top spot with the day’s highest score 41 points. Silver’s winners were Marg Birtwistle in 3rd (33), hubbie, Phil Birtwistle in 2nd (35) & Alan Gilbert was first with 36 pts. The golden boys all scored well with Darren Hancock in 3rd spot (35 C/B), 2nd was Tony Smale (38) & our very much “in form” Captain Steve Davis took the top slot with an excellent 39 points. Well done to all those in the prizes. Paying a regular visit to www.smgs. org will help keep you up to date with all society matters whereas a quick call to Phil on 966 774 197 will help you with all the details of future Wednesday meetings.....come & join us, visitors are made very welcome.
1881 Sir Alexander Fleming, scientist, Scottish bacteriologist and discoverer of penicillin was born….and only Alan Rickers bettered his handicap at Roda and it must be said, once again. He seems to like this course for this is the second time in 3 visits. Once again, it was pleasing to find out that the wind wasn’t blowing as strong as normal but that didn’t seem to quell the low scores on this well cared for golf course, albeit slow greens that are expected this time of the year. The course and the staff are very welcoming at Roda and it is a delight to be treated as golfers and not just as “fodder”. Only three of the four NTP’s were claimed and these were by Joe Dean , Mark Howard and Simon “LUFC” Lee. It was pleasing to see that the obvious hard work on a putting lesson by Shelia Dean worked on her hubby, for he and Derek Sullivan managed to secure a “Two” and take away the donations. We had a few guests and it seems that one guest who complained about his name being incorrect last week when he was called Peter. Well, if you had a name of PATSY, I’d be happy to be called Peter. However, he was in the frame again this week and will enjoy yet another cut, so Patsy Long, enjoy the limelight, it will be ending. The overall winner of the guest prize was the son of Peter Wells – M Wells with 34 points which earned the bragging rights over his old man. There is no doubt about it, the Silver Division, did not appear to enjoy the course with a score of only 25 from Colin Marsden to take 3rd spot. Mick

Busters August golf report
Well it certainly doesn’t get any cooler , setting off from home at around 08:00 to meet up prior to playing , when the temperatures are often about 18 , however they have usually risen to 28-30 by the time we are ready to tee off , but we aint fooled by this and we come prepared with plenty of fluids , some frozen some in a cool bag but the important thing is that we have sufficient H20 or some liquid . Friday the 1st August was no different to the last few weeks with the August temperature reaching above 30 , we kid ourselves that this is what we are here in Spain for but I have yet to hear anyone say ( Spanish or none Spanish ) that they feel comfortable with the heat , but enough of this whinging , we are here and last Friday we played at Bonalba , the course was in very good condition although the greens were a little indifferent . We were greeted by the staff and as part of Bonalba’s deal coffee was provided on arrival . Bonalba along with some other courses now insist that we pay them for insurance albeit through the Spanish Golf Federation , this may only be a small cost but I wonder how they can justify that we have to use the ‘ Federation ‘ for this facility , many of our members were part of the Spanish Golf Federation in the past but became disillusioned as when they tried to contact the Federation , usually by email to find out either what benefits they gave us or
what competitions they organised or in fact any query , they never even got the courtesy of a reply , I personally paid my Federation fees for 6 years and during that time never had anything advising me what cover or benefits they provided for the fees that they received , I think that this is something that needs looking into by the courses in question . Onto the rest of our day , we returned to a warm welcome at the Mini Golf bar in Quesada which is located a few minutes away from the Quesada Arches , after a couple of beers we had our prize presentation , no one broke par but their were three players tying for first place with thirty three points each so a count back was necessary , in first place by means of a better back nine was Martin Collins winning a litre bottle of Smirnoff vodka , in second place was Nikki Ead receiving a bottle of Rioja and a bottle of Rose our third place was taken by Barrie Hopkinson who took a bottle of Rioja back home , also winning a bottle of Rioja each for the best back and front nines were Phil Harris and Alan Gifford , our NTP s were taken by , on holes four and eight Nikki Ead hole eleven was won by Martin Collins and Chris Ives had NTP on hole fourteen , our soccer cards winner was Barrie Hopkinson who had selected Liverpool .
