Almodóvar to film on location

CULT film director Pedro Almodóvar will start filming in the Pyrénées in the province of Huesca, the Rías Altas deltas in Galicia, the mountains in the province of Huelva and in Madrid in two months’ time. The award-winning scriptwriter’s forthcoming work, El Silencio (‘The Silence’) is due to send his production team to Huesca, Aragón to take photographs of possible filming locations in May, after the snows have melted and the skiers have left the slopes. Provincial film office TuHuesca says it is ‘delighted’ that its northernmost mountains will feature in the forthcoming movie, since its management has been campaigning hard to get the area on camera in screen productions. The mountains in the Greater Madrid region and in the south-western coastal

province of Huelva, bordering on Portugal will be used for some of the scenes, then the production team will head to the far north-west where the upper river deltas of Galicia, known as the Rías Altas, will feature as a backdrop. El Silencio centres on one woman, Julieta, over 30 years from 1985 to 2015 and her battle with her mental health as she teeters on the edge of a nervous breakdown. She is played by two actresses, Emma Suárez and Adriana Ugarte, who portray the ‘good life’ she enjoyed in the 1980s and the ‘catastrophe’ her existence has become in the second decade of the 21st century, where ‘only a miracle can save her’, according to the synopsis. Scary' Costa del Sol footpath reopens

SPAIN'S 'most dangerous' footpath has reopened after having been blocked off to the public for 15 years, following new safety measures being put in place. Not for the faint-hearted, the Caminito del Rey (literally, 'The Little Footpath of the King') lies between Antequera and Ardales in the province of Málaga, is three kilometres long and barely a metre wide - but with a 100-metre drop between it and the river below. It runs alongside the Gaitanes mountains, it fell into a state of nearruin some 16 years ago with most of the handrail - the only element between walkers on the narrow route and the massive chasm below - having rotted away. The deaths of five walkers in separate incidents in 1999 and 2000 led to the footpath being closed off. Some have still tried to access it via

the railway line, but if they are caught they face a fine of up to €6,000. Work on restoring the Caminito del Rey started last year and, following an investment to the tune of €6 million, is now said to be 'completely safe' although still not recommended for anyone who is scared of heights. But now it is back in use, dare-devil hikers are expected to bring in about €20m a year and create up to 181 jobs between them - even though walking the footpath will not carry a fee for the first six months. The 'King's Footpath' will not only be used for brave walkers - it will also form part of the second stage of the Vuelta a España, Spain's answer to the Tour de France, on Sunday, August 23. Altamira cave will open to visitors

The cave of Altamira, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important examples of prehistoric art, is to be opened for restricted visits for as long as no negative impact is detected. The site’s board of trustees announced the decision on Thursday afternoon, but it had been widely expected for weeks. A group of academics and scientists had even sent an open letter to Unesco criticizing the likely reopening of Altamira, and describing it as a politically motivated move. Under the new guidelines, a group of five randomly selected visitors will be allowed into the cave each week for 37 minutes in the company of two guides. This regime has already been tested on an experimental basis over the past year to see what effects it had on the Paleolithic art inside. The decision means that Altamira, located in the northern Spanish region of Cantabria, near the town of Santillana del Mar, will become the only prehistoric cave of its kind to be open to the public in Europe. Similarly significant caves such as Lascaux in France are off limits to visitors, who are instead able to visit recreations of the sites nearby. An accurate recreation of the Altamira caves is situated inside the adjacent museum. The first group of five visitors will go in on April 10. Altamira was closed to the public in 2002 after years of tourist visits. Several teams from the CSIC Spanish National Research Council, led by Sergio SánchezMoral and Cesáreo Saiz-Jiménez, two of the world’s leading experts on cave art, carried out a survey of the cave between 1996 and 2012, in some cases involving

experimental visits. Their preliminary results were published in the journal Science in 2011 and formed the basis of a subsequent report for the Culture Ministry that left no doubt about the dangers

posed by visitors: “Any existing threshold of risk has already been crossed,” warned the study. The importance of the Altamira cave paintings, which are around 18,000 years old and were discovered in 1879, is comparable only to those at Lascaux and Chauvet in southern France. But while all three are Unesco World Heritage Sites, both of the French caves are strictly off limits to visitors – Lascaux because the paintings were nearly lost through deterioration, and Chauvet because it was only found in 1994 and never opened to the public at all. In January of this year, the prehistory department at Madrid’s Complutense University sent a letter to Unesco criticizing the Spanish Culture Ministry for wanting to reopen the cave, noting that “allowing visitors to the cave raises important questions about its conservation and endangers a fragile legacy of great importance for our understanding of Paleolithic society.” Source: elpais.com

Spain’s politicians scramble for photo opportunities ahead of elections

Members of the local government team in Málaga joke about it, calling it “Los ocho días de oro” or “The eight days of gold,” the name of a popular annual sales period at El Corte Inglés, Spain’s premier department store. The reason is that between March 23 and 30, there have been 40 official events in the province ahead of municipal elections in May. The flurry of public ceremonies includes the inauguration of two museums set to turn Picasso’s hometown into the new golden mile of Spanish art. Only last Saturday, Málaga officials cut the ribbon at the first franchise of the Centre Pompidou to open outside France. Even Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is not a big fan of this sort of event, has been adding them to his agenda lately “Last night I slept four hours,” admitted Málaga Mayor Francisco Javier de la Torre, of the PP, as he took the call from EL PAÍS on his way to the museum. But time is running out: as of this Monday, further project inaugurations are off limits as per Spain’s voting legislation. Municipal and regional elections have just been announced for May 24. Before this, however, mayors and regional premiers have been packing in the presentations. This phenomenon has been most noticeable in Andalusia, which

held early regional elections on March 22. Even Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is not a big fan of this sort of event, has been adding them to his agenda lately. Between January and February the Popular Party (PP) leader only presided one ribbon-cutting ceremony dealing with a power connection between France and Spain. But this Monday he is traveling to La Rioja to open a new road link and to Santander to visit a hospital. Sources at La Moncloa, the seat of government, admitted that elections “set the pace,” but noted that during his entire term in office Rajoy has only cut the ribbon on three road sections, including Monday’s event. And while public works projects have slowed down because of the crisis, in 2015 there will be 1,000 new kilometers of highspeed railway and 350km more of roads available to travelers in Spain. Researchers at the Foundation for Applied Economics Studies (Fedea) said in a recent study that no high-speed AVE line in Spain is turning a profit, and suggested that such a roll-out of new rail links is tied to politicking. But the Málaga mayor Torre supports this type of political publicity. “It would be a mistake not to use

this opening to advertise yourself to the world,” said De la Torre about the museum opening, though stating that his team “didn’t push anything forward or back” to make it coincide with the end of campaigning. This major project now looks like it will be completed before general elections in the fall. But in the meantime, Martínez is making good use of the construction phase. Tourists flock to Spain in record-breaking numbers

Spain has broken not one, but two tourism records, for the number of tourists in January and February, who spent a high of€6.6 billion in the country. Spain welcomed 6.5 million international tourists in the first two months of 2015, marking a 4.5 percent rise on the same period last year and a new tourism record for the country. Tourists visiting Spain also spent over €6.6 billion ($7.2 billion) during January and February, a record 8 percent more than last year. Over half of the 6.45 million tourists who visited Spain in January and February were from the UK, France and Germany according to figures released by the Institute of Tourism Studies last week. While the number of Russian visitors was down on this time last year, the number of Italian and US visitors has increased rapidly. As many tour operators feared, the weak rouble saw a significant decrease in the number of Russian tourists visiting Spain of 20.2 percent.

Over 20 percent more Italian tourists visited Spain in the first two months of 2015 than during the same period last year, the figures reveal. The same period also saw an 18.7 percent increase in the number of US tourists visiting the country. The most popular destination for international tourists was by far the Canary Islands, which welcomed 2.044 million visitors in January and February, or 31.7 percent of all international tourists to Spain. Catalonia, with its beaches and citybreak favourite Barcelona, was the second most-visited region in Spain, with 1.595 million tourists or 24.7 percent. Andalusia was another favourite, welcoming 12.2 percent of tourists, while 10.3 percent visited Madrid and 8.3 percent spent their holidays in Valencia. Residents in Spain spend €67 a month in restaurants, rising to €80 in the north

THE average resident in Spain spends just over €800 a year on eating out in restaurants – equivalent to €67 a month or slightly less than €15.50 a week, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Northerners and those in land-locked central regions shell out the most on dining out – Extremadura, to the west of Spain, leads the field at an average of €982 a year per head, €18.88 a week or €81.83 a month. Centre-north region Castilla y León comes second with residents spending €949 a year on eating out, followed by north-eastern Navarra at €943, northwestern Galicia at €937 and Cantabria on the north coast at €935. It is Spain’s colder regions which see the most spent on restaurants – other than in the Canary Islands, where residents stump up €933 a year on eating out – with Cantabria’s and Galicia’s neighbour, Asturias, spending €916 per head per year and the Pyrénéen wine region of La Rioja, €901, being €17.33 a week or €75.08 a month. Some of Spain’s more touristy regions come farther down the list – Murcia is near the bottom with a typical inhabitant spending €628 a year on dining out, being €12.08 a week or €52.33 a month, only beating the Spanish-owned city-provinces of Ceuta and Melilla where, jointly, residents shell out €608 a year on restaurants. And although the average Balearic Island resident spends a healthy €844 per annum on eating out, this is still below Castilla-La Mancha’s €846. Catalunya’s inhabitants plough more money into restaurant visits than those in the Valencia region’s three provinces of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia on the east coast - €837 compared to €795. This puts Valencia below the average of €805 a year, but the Mediterranean region is still ahead of Spain’s capital – people from Madrid only spend €693 a year on restaurants, despite many commuters having to dine out at lunchtime as it would take them too long to get home at midday – as well as

Not one AVE high-speed rail line is turning a profit, says new study

A new study presented on Thursday on the multi-billion euro investments made on Spain’s AVE high-speed rail system concludes that the costs are “neither beneficial to businesses nor society,” and do not compensate passenger savings in airline tickets or time spent on the road. The Foundation for the Studies of Applied Economics (Fedea), which conducted an analysis of major AVE routes, said that the current demand for train services wasn’t enough to recover the investments made by past and current Spanish governments. British couple found shot dead in Alicante The bodies of a British couple were found in their home in Xalò on Sunday, according to police. The bodies of Peter and Jean Tarsey, both aged 77, were found at their villa on Sunday afternoon, the Guardia Civil said. Police sources said that the couple were found by police after friends who saw them regularly reported they could not get in contact with them. Local and national police forces entered their house to find the couple lifeless on their sofa with gunshot wounds and bullet casings on the floor. The two were found locked in each other's arms, according to media reports. "It does not appear to have been suicide," a spokesman for Spain's Civil Guard said on Monday.“ Police found the door to the house open,” he said, and said the Civil Guard were not treating it as a robbery they had found the household intact. "Investigations are continuing," the spokesperson said, adding that police will not comment further until the postmortem had been carried out. A spokesperson for the British Foreign Office confirmed the deaths of two British nationals in Alicante and said it

would be standing ready to provide consular assistance if and when it was needed. Spanish media reported that the town's mayor said the couple had long resided in Xalò, also called Jalón (pictured above), which is located to the northeast of Alicante on Spain’s southeastern coast. The Costa Blanca is a popular destination for both British tourists and expats. The couple reportedly have two sons, one living in Palma de Mallorca and the other in London. LEGAL CORNER Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last week we discussed the idea of storing your important information on a server. We considered what you needed to build one and how you might set it up. Although I haven’t had any emails from irate techo-geeks about how many security holes where left open, something that I’ll happily admit to and there were a number of whoppers there. The idea of the article, as is with so many of them, is to get you, the thinking, inquiring reader to think, to inquire and to ask questions, while making it non-technical for the nontechnically minded. One day I will give a complete demonstration, probably at Jack’s Bar, on the correct way to set up a data / printer server from an old computer and include all the necessary security steps to make sure that it is safe from ‘preying eyes’! Today’s article is about the eagerly awaited Windows 10. We have covered this issue before with the upshot that it will probably be the best product since Windows XP. As mentioned before, I am one of the many people “beta-testing” and highlighting the flaws and reporting them to Microsoft so that they will be able to correct them. I also think that it will be the best thing since XP (which in truth won’t be that difficult)!

Back in 1698; a number of unsuspecting innocents were sent along to the Moat at the Tower of London to watch the washing of the lions. Of course there were no lions and certainly none being washed. This is the earliest recorded April fool’s prank. For many years after, people were still taken in when told of the annual lion washing ceremony at The Tower. Even 200 years later official looking tickets were left around London inviting people to the annual event. In 1950 Norwegians were taken in by a front page story claiming that the Norwegian wine monopoly had run out of bottles and so were offering wine at 75% discount as long as buyers could be outside the store at 10am April 1st with buckets to take the wine home in. Long queues formed but needless to say there was no wine. The Daily Wail in 1981 ran a story about an unfortunate Japanese marathon runner who due to a translation error; was still running around Britain as he thought he had to run for 26 days rather than 26 miles. They reported that people had tried to stop him but he was determined to finish. The supposed translator apologised in the article and said he had only been learning Japanese

During the Cold War in 1984; when the internet was just a simple messaging system a company called Usenet announced that the Soviet Union was joining the online community as they wanted to discuss important issues with Europeans and Americans. Six years later when they really did join the internet, Moscow took the domain name kremvax in recognition of the hoax. Soldier Magazine in April 1980 ran a story about the Bearskin hats that the Irish Guards wore at Buckingham Palace. The claimed that due to the thickness of the bearskin there was enough minerals left in the skins to keep it growing. So the guards had to have a regular trim. The Daily Express picked up the story and ran it not realising they had been had as well. In 2010 ThinkGeek an online retailer marketed Unicorn Meat with the tag that it was the new white meat with high sparkle content. The joke worked so well that Think Geek actually produced cans to

fulfil orders that contained a stuffed toy unicorn. In Germany nobody received their orders as German Custom officers confiscated the cans as they contained meat from an endangered species. April 1st 1980 the BBC World Service announced that Big Ben was getting a digital readout installed to make it more accurate. Furthermore the redundant hands would be given away to the first four callers. The prank caused upset across the world as angry listeners contacted the BBC to complain about the upgrade. In 1991 The London Times newspaper ran a piece saying the Department of Transport had worked out that by turning the M25 into one way only on weekdays; traffic jams would disappear. Mondays Wednesday and Fridays would be clockwise and Tuesday and Thursdays anticlockwise. BBC Radio News picked up on the story and ran it as a news item and irate listeners rang in to complain about the scheme. Unicorns are a popular source of trickery and in 2012 the British Library announced it had discovered a 14th Century cook book with a recipe for

cooking the mythical beast. The book was by Geoffrey Fule and the recipe started with the words ‘taketh one unicorne.’ Then it was to be marinated in garlic and cloves then roasted. Lastly from 1957 is my favourite April fool’s; the Swiss spaghetti tree harvest. BBC Panorama reported that the harvest was going to be a bumper one in Switzerland as the spaghetti weevil had almost been eradicated and the Spring weather had been mild. Star Wars’ Tatooine sunsets ‘may be widespread’ in universe

Earth-like planets with two suns, resembling Tatooine in Star Wars, may be widespread, scientists believe. In the movie, Luke Skywalker’s home world had twin sunsets because it orbited a pair of stars. So far, scientists have only identified uninhabitable gas-giant planets in orbit around binary stars. But new computer simulations show that solid, Earth-like planets such as Tatooine are not only theoretically possible but may exist in large numbers. US astrophysicists Ben Bromley and Scott Kenyon conclude in their study: “Tatooine sunsets may be common after all. “Our main result is that outside a small region near a binary star, (either rocky or gas-giant) planet formation can proceed in much the same was as around a single star. In our scenario, planets are as prevalent around binaries as around single stars.” The research shows how binary stars – pairs of stars bound together by

gravitational force – can be orbited by asteroid-sized rocks that clump together to form planets. D r Bromley, from the University of Utah, said: “It is just as easy to make an Earthlike planet around a binary star as it is around a single star like our sun. So we think that Tatooines may be common in the universe. “An Earth-like Tatooine would have no problem forming right where it needs to be to host life.” Previously many experts doubted that Earth-like rocky planets could form around binary stars. The problem was that asteroids, or planetesimals, need to merge gently in order to grow. Those orbiting pairs of stars were thought to follow tangled paths that caused them to smash together destructively. But the new study shows that the asteroids are likely to settle into oval, not circular, orbits which helps prevent such fatal collisions. The American space agency Nasa’s Kepler space telescope has discovered

more than 1,000 planets outside our solar system, including rocky worlds in the “habitable zone” not too close or far away from their host stars. Within the habitable zone, temperatures are mild enough to permit liquid surface water and, possibly, Earth-like life. Seven planets have been found orbiting within or near the habitable zone around binary stars, but all are gas giants similar to Jupiter. However this may only be because small, rocky planets are so much harder to spot that giant gaseous ones, according to Dr Bromley. The study appears on the scientific pre-print website ArXiv and has been submitted to the Astrophysical Journal for review. westernmorningnews.co.uk

Luxury Homes in Mallorca 150% More Expensive than in 2007

According to the calculations of Engel & Völkers, German real estate agents specialising in properties of high standing, the current price of a luxury villa in Mallorca is around five million euros and is over 2.5 times the price registered before the outbreak of the crisis. The agency firmly believes that the island, recently voted the best place in the world to live, still has potential. Hans Lenz, the Managing Director of Engel & Völkers for Mallorca South West, said: “a new segment is emerging in the luxury property market in Mallorca, with a price range of around five million euros, compared to two million euros a few years ago. This increase began in the south west and is spreading throughout the island”. Thus, idealista.com reported that, in the space of eight years, luxury home prices have soared by 150%. Moreover, the agency’s statistics show that the average transaction price increased by 60% in 2014, rising from 750,000 euros (the average price in 2013) to 1.2 million euros.

Earlier this month the island’s capital (Palma de Mallorca) was chosen as the best city in the world in which to live, according to a survey conducted by the British newspaper, The Times, which highlighted its exceptional climate, its culture and its gastronomy, and there is no doubt that

the island is attracting the attention of investors, however, Engel & Völkers does not believe these are sufficient reasons to justify the sharp rise in prices of luxury properties, which they attribute to very different factors. The company explained: “the high prices the most premium plots reach are down to the c o mb inat i o n of protected territory (40% of the total) and the strict standards of construction, w h i c h strikes a balance between supply and demand”. Added to this they cited the increase in demand for modern avantgarde architecture, equipped with high technology. Another reason explaining the success of the sector is the lowering of taxes on capital gains and inheritances (something which favours foreign investors) and the upturn in the granting of bank loans to foreign buyers. The Germans, British and Scandinavians continue to be the nationalities most interested in finding a luxury property in the north of the island, in the south west, and in the fashionable areas of Palma de Mallorca, such as Portixol, Molinar or Son Vida. The number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system in February reached a total of 1,528,369, representing an increase of 0.81% over the previous month (12,313 more contributors). Year-on-year, the number of foreign social security

contributors has increased by 0.51% (7,681 more contributors), and is the first February since 2008 to register a year-on-year increase in the number of foreign contributors. Declines of up to -8.54% (in 2009) were registered in previous years. The UK banking industry will have to prove it can endure a global economic slump in this year's Bank of England stress tests. The Bank has set out the parameters of this year's stress test, which include a collapse in economic growth in China and a sharp downturn in the eurozone. The test imagines a sharp contraction in eurozone economic growth and Chinese expansion of just 1.7%. China's economy expanded by 7.4% in 2014 - the slowest pace for 24 years. Economic growth of just 1.7% would plunge Hong Kong into a deep recession that would cause house prices on the island to collapse by 40%, hitting UK lenders such as HSBC. Bank and building societies will also have to prove they have the capital resources to withstand a 2% fall in economic output in the eurozone. In addition the stress tests imagine a scenario in which the UK economy contracts by 2.3%. Last year's tests, which were already considered stringent, focused on a 35% crash in UK house prices. This year, the Bank of England has set the fall in house prices at 20% over a period of five years. To be clear, the Bank's five-year scenario does not mean it believes these events will happen. This is what is called a "tail-risk" event. It could happen but the probability is exceedingly low. But then again, no-one predicted the severity of the financial crisis.

And actually this scenario is not as bad as what actually happened in 2008, even though it is put in place to try to stop those calamitous events ever occurring again. Banks might then be required to raise more capital to strengthened their balance sheets. One big missing piece of the stress test is a break up of the eurozone. That might seem odd, given events in Greece. Barclays, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Royal Bank of Scotland, Nationwide, Santander UK and Lloyds will be tested this year and the results are due to be published in December. The Co-op Bank has been excluded from the tests this year because it now has a smaller balance sheet and will have a more limited role in payment systems in the future. "The resilience of Co-operative Bank is unlikely, on its own, to have a material impact on the resilience of the financial system," the Bank said. Banks will have to show they can maintain a core capital ratio - the difference between the cash they have on their balance sheet versus their investments - of 4.5% after being exposed to the theoretical shocks. The Dastardly Plan

Rodriquez aimed to put Remitroot in all its forms out of the reach of Alquerians, thereby causing deep discontent. This would, he hoped reflect on the government, cause a vote of ‘no confidence’ and result in another election which this time he would take the trouble to ‘rig’. The question was how? Antonio Poyato owned the smallholding where Remitroot grew and he wasn’t about to relinquish control of his precious crop. Rodriquez searched for Poyato’s weakness. Everyone knew Poyato was addicted to his own crop. He not only consumed Remitroot Whisky, wine and beer but also ate the stuff, wore it and used it to fill the cracks in his fast decaying farmhouse. Rodriquez decided to ‘hoist him with his own petard ‘ an act guaranteed to bring tears to the eyes of all but the hardiest. Rodriquez would get the crop by guile while Poyato was in his ‘cups’ during his Friday night Remitroot drinking bout at the Bar La Casa Devante. His ploy was to disguise himself as an itinerant Venezuelan Hamster Stuffer and engage Poyato in conversation. Poyato would be too far gone to see through the plasticine and cling-film disguise and would probably think the overall effect was due to some nasty skin complaint. Rodriquez was an aficionado of the ancient Alquerian board game of ‘Stckitupemdoo’ and could cheat like a politician filing an expenses claim. Poyato however thought the game was something to do with charting hormonal cycles. Rodriquez alias the Venezuelan Hamster Stuffer suggested a game and the board was duly laid out. During the boom years of the eighties fortunes had been won and lost at the

Stckitupemdoo tables. Rodriquez was a master but to be on the safe side he used a weighted dice and applied honey to the base of his counters, an old but effective ploy. As the game progressed the green Alquerian bank notes piled up in the centre of the table. Spectators and players alike spoke only in hushed tones. Beads of perspiration ran down Poyato’s forehead. He soon had to sign promissory notes or forfeit the game. Poyato had staked all on the outcome of a single game. He had pledged the precious deeds to the Remitroot fields and processing plant against Rodriquez’s crisp bank notes. A slimy smile crossed the evil countenance of Rodriquez. He played his hand, a ‘Stuffittoemall’ the unbeatable one. Poyato was broken, Rodriquez jubilant. Those who watched the game and its outcome were oblivious to the awful truth. Remitroot and therefore Alqueria was in the hands of the most hated man in the Village, Rodriquez.

It was dark and raining hard, but the party was going great in the Village Hall, right at the top of the hill. I needed to pick up my birthday cake, so I dragged Pete away from his new best friend, the teenage leader of the pop group playing the Hall, and together we proceeded along the corridor that linked it with the florists. As we entered the flower shop it was a lovely sunny day. My cake was handed to me on one of those round cardboard pretend plates. Knowing how floppy and slidey these plates are I took it very carefully in both hands – I was terrified of dropping its cargo of Choco-Mocca deliciousness and carried it gingerly and with extreme caution out of the shop. It was still a lovely warm sunny day in the valley bottom as somebody took my horse from me - I was intent on balancing the cake on its perilous plate, and had no spare hands for horses. The barn was supported on staddle stones, those stone mushrooms used to raise buildings out of the reach of floods and vermin. Being raised off the ground the barn could only be accessed by a set of wooden steps and a door at the top. As I began my journey across the grassy yard I could already taste the cake; all I had to do was get it across the yard, up the steps and through the door. Concentrating with every fibre of my being I began my ascent of the steps. I reached the top, now all I had to do was open the door. This is where it got complicated. I had the cake, which was threatening to slide

The doorknob was the round sort, which needs turning. I jammed it between my hip and my elbow and wriggled, daring the cake to slide off its plate. I stood on one leg, holding my foot ready to repel ingress and egress of animals. Then I woke up, so I don’t know whether the cake and I made it inside. But how the heck did I manage to get on and off the horse while carrying a cake on a cardboard plate?

The exact origins of this religious feast day’s name are unknown. Some sources claim the word Easter is derived from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of spring and fertility. Other accounts trace Easter to the Latin term hebdomada alba, or white week, an ancient reference to Easter week and the white clothing donned by people who were baptized during that time. Through a translation error, the term later appeared as esostarum in Old High German, which eventually became Easter in English. In Spanish, Easter is known as Pascua; in French, Paques. These words are derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha or Pasch, for Passover. Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection occurred after he went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover (or Pesach in Hebrew), the Jewish festival commemorating the ancient Israelites’ exodus from slavery in Egypt. Easter is really an entire season of the Christian church year, as opposed to a single-day observance. Lent, the 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday, is a time of reflection and penance and represents the 40 days that Jesus spent alone in the wilderness before starting his ministry, a time in which Christians believe he survived various temptations by the devil. The day before Lent, known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, is a last hurrah of food and fun before the fasting begins. The week preceding Easter is called Holy Week and includes Maundy Thursday, which commemorates Jesus’ last supper with his disciples; Good Friday, which honors the day of his crucifixion; and Holy Saturday, which focuses on the transition between the crucifixion and resurrection. The 50-day period following Easter Sunday is called Eastertide and includes a celebration of Jesus’ ascension into heaven.

In addition to Easter’s religious significance, it also has a commercial side, as evidenced by the mounds of jelly beans and marshmallow chicks that appear in stores each spring. Easter eggs It's pretty much common knowledge that Easter is a Christian celebration of Christ's rising, but this holiday also has pagan origins. Where did the colored eggs, cute little bunnies, baby chicks, leg of lamb dinners, and lilies come from? They are all symbols of rebirth and the lamb was a traditional religious sacrifice. Easter falls in the spring, the yearly time of renewal, when the earth renews itself after a long, cold winter. The word Easter comes to us from the Norsemen's Eostur, Eastar, Ostara, and Ostar, and the pagan goddess Eostre, all of which involve the season of the growing sun and new birth. The Easter Bunny arose originally as a symbol of fertility, due to the rapid reproduction habits of the hare and rabbit. The ancient Egyptians, Persians, Phoenicians, and Hindus all believed the world began with an enormous egg, thus the egg as a symbol of new life has been around for eons. The particulars may vary, but most cultures around the world use the egg as a symbol of new life and rebirth. A notation in the household accounts of Edward I of England showed an expenditure of eighteen pence for 450 eggs to be goldleafed and colored for Easter gifts. The first book to mention Easter eggs by name was written five hundred years ago. Yet, a North African tribe that had become Christian much earlier in time had a custom of coloring eggs at Easter. TV NEWS ............... not allot of new things to report on the TV front either for UK or Spanish viewing ........ Having said that we do now have access to Scandinavian TV via the internet ........ Those of you from Northern Europe ask us for more details ........ This TV is not available on “normal” sized satellite dishes so the Scandinavians tend to watch UK TV but now it is possible to watch Norwegian and Swedish local TV via the internet. As with all internet TV the internet must be VERY good ........ Not only in speed (about 2.5MBs is adequate) but in consistency and your supplier being able to offer you absolutely continuous downloads ............... This is the way we will all be watching TV in the not to distant future and Rainbows UK internet TV box has a vast channel range with no computers , dishes or a “geek brain” needed to operate it ! Again ask us for details or a demonstration. If you are getting internet installed or thinking of changing supplier and you have thoughts of viewingTV this way always ensure the internet supplier will support TV viewing ...........Not all do or can. We have had a spate of SKYPLUS digibox hard drive failures for some reason and the only cure has been a new digibox ..... a little expensive and involves the hassle of matching the SKY card to the new box ....... it really does pay to reformat the hard drive now and again – say every 6 to 9 months ........ It will increase its life. Now in doing this you will wipe out all the

recordings on the disc but , again , it is worth catching up on all viewing and performing a format. Go into services , then “installers menu” (0 , 1 , SELECT) and then “full system rest” ........ This will format (wipe clean and make it as if its new) the hard disk and reload the software............ The box will be as if it has just come out of the factory ........ All recordings gone and all future planned recordings wiped so you will need to go into the planner and reset your future recordings – but the procedure will extend the life of the digibox. We can do this for you if you ask ..... Just a nominal 5euro charge provided we are in the area. This format procedure seems to keep the SKYPLUS boxes in top form but it is worth doing on any PLUS recording box now and again. ALL harddrives like a reformat but it does mean you loose all data on the drive. Again we can do for any PLUS box ......... just ask us if you are not happy to do it yourself. All our TV equipment is now just a computer in one form or another........ And sometimes they get the software corrupted especially with “dirty” Spanish electricity. Most items will reset and reload software after a“power down” ........ This will often correct small faults and errors. Occasionally pull the mains plug , count to 30 and replug and let the item restart ......... often works wonders on that “faulty” piece of equipment. Just as a side your internet router likes a reboot now and again .......... not only will it “reset” the router but leave it unplugged a while and on reboot you will almost certainly get a new ipaddress ...........This will help with your computers security as anyone “tracking” you will be logged to your ipaddress. In support of local registered charity Helping Hands, the European Elvis Tribute Champion, Simon Patrick, finally came to Aguilas this month. The long awaited sell out concert began with guests enjoying a superb hot and cold buffet, followed by two magnificent performances by Simon, suitably justifying his title of Champion. With supporting professional DJ Steve King, the evening also included the usual raffle and a “Guess the Weight” of a specially made Elvis cake. A brief video portraying the passion, commitment and hard work by the charity was also featured. A total of a magnificent 1,063 Euros including donations was raised for which the team would like to thank all those who contributed. Based in Lorca and Aguilas, Helping Hands consists of a very small team of English Spanish, Belgian and German people, working hard to make a difference to the lives of animals and people alike. As with most charities, times are hard and they are struggling, caring for 40+ abandoned and illtreated dogs, most of whom are housed at the homes of two HH members, the charity not having a sanctuary. Helping Hands are appealing for donations of ANY unwanted items that can be sold in their charity shop in Aguilas, (No. 5 Calle Fuensanta), to help with their huge monthly costs. the hocks and feet. Bathing The ASPCA recommends bathing your dog every 3 months or so; your pet may require more frequent baths in the summertime if she spends lots of time with your outdoors. Always use a mild shampoo that’s safe to use on dogs, and follow these easy steps: First, give your pet a good brushing to remove all dead hair and mats. Place a rubber bath mat in the bathtub to provide secure footing, and fill the tub with about 3 to 4 inches of lukewarm water. Use a spray hose to thoroughly wet your pet, taking care not to spray directly in her ears, eyes or nose. If you don’t have a spray hose, a large plastic pitcher or unbreakable cup will do. Gently massage in shampoo, working from head to tail. Thoroughly rinse with a spray hose or pitcher; again, avoid the ears, eyes and nose. Check the ears for any foul odors or excessive debris; if you choose to use a cleansing solution on a cotton ball, take care not to insert it into the ear canal. Dry your pet with a large towel or blow dryer, but carefully monitor the level of heat. Please note: Some animals seem to think that bathtime is a perfect time to act goofy. Young puppies especially will wiggle and bounce all over the place while you try to brush them, and tend to nip at bathtime. If this sounds like your pet, put a toy that floats in the tub with her so she can focus on the toy rather than on mouthing you. Nail Clipping Most people really don’t handle their dog’s feet until they are about to clip the nails and then...watch out! Some animals can get very upset at this totally foreign feeling. That’s why it’s a good idea to get your dog used to having her feet touched before you attempt a nail trim. Rub your hand up and down her leg and then gently press each individual toe-and be sure to give her lots of praise and some food treats as you do this. Every animal is different, but chances are that within a week or two of daily foot massage, your dog will be better able to tolerate a trim. Here’s how to do it: Begin by spreading each of your dog’s feet to inspect for dirt and debris. Use sharp, guillotine-type nail clippers to cut off the tip of each nail at a slight angle, just before the point where it begins to curve. Take care to avoid the quick, a vein that runs into the nail. This pink area can be seen through the nail. If your dog has black nails, however, the quick will not be as easily discernible, so be extra careful. If you do accidentally cut into the quick, it may bleed, in which case you can apply some styptic powder to stop the bleeding.Once the nails have been cut, use an emery board to smooth any rough edges. Book Review

“Novels gave you a completely false idea about life, they told lies and they implied there were endings when in reality there were no endings, everything just went on and on and on.” These apparently disparate case histories cover 1970, 1994 and 1979 involving girls who had either been murdered or had simply vanished into thin air. Private Investigator, Jackson Brodie, beautifully drawn but flawed through and through had spent 12 years in the Cambridgeshire Constabulary and before that the military police. Forty-five years of age and working on irksome or dull cases like Binky Rain and her missing cats when he becomes inundated with requests to solve three case histories of people who have been seriously damaged by crimes committed against their loved ones. “He was used to being a voyeur, the outsider looking in, and nothing, but nothing that anyone did surprised him anymore.” There is a fourth case history: 1971 Holy Girls which is personal to Jackson and involves the unsolved murder of his big sister Niamh who was 16 at the time. It was believed she was abducted, raped, strangled and then dumped in the canal. Her death weighed heavily with brother Francis who was 18 at the time and he never got over her brutal killing. He killed himself and it was 12 year old Jackson who found him hanging. Two tragedies in a short space of time. The case histories contain dark subject matter of death, despair, abuse and thwarted love but end with a sense of hope and happiness you’ll be pleased to note. In two cases there is closure, a sense of relief. Considering the time scale that is more than the clients probably expected. Jackson is an exceptional investigator and risks life and limb to find out answers in order to solve the crimes. In Family Plot Rosemary, married at 18 to a man twice her age, is expecting her fifth child and hasn’t time or energy for her four daughters who seem to run wild. Sylvia, the strangest of the girls is 13, has developed an unhealthy obsession with religion, then there is Amelia, Julia and 3 year old Olivia, the beautiful child who everyone adores. The marriage is loveless, Victor is a mathematician and he locks himself away in his study and detests his daughters. Rosemary detests him and has little maternal affection for

her three eldest daughters with the exception of Olivia, her child spun from light. “Sometimes she wanted to eat Olivia, to bite into a tender forearm or a soft calf muscle, even to devour her whole like a snake and take her back inside her where she would be safe.” The tragedy happened one hot summer. Rosemary had refused to let her daughters sleep outside in the tent, then felt guilty about her “most forgotten child” Amelia and she told her she could sleep outside with Olivia. Rascal the family dog and Blue Mouse her pet toy accompanied them. The following day Amelia woke up and Olivia and Blue Mouse had gone. That was in 1970. Following the death of Victor at the age of 84 Julia finds Blue Mouse and suspects foul play. Amelia, too, is desperate to resolve the case, still hopeful that Olivia had perhaps been abducted and is still alive. The investigation unearths vile details of their appalling childhood and their sexual abuse which partly explains why Amelia is unstable and suicidal with her “meaningless little life.” Case Histories 2. Just a Normal Day. But it wasn’t normal. Theo is a solicitor regarded as being “morbidly obese.” His wife Valerie died when she was 34 and he was left to bring up his two daughters on his own. Laura his youngest daughter is still at home but almost on the point of going to Aberdeen university. She adores her father and the feeling is reciprocated. “Theo loved {her} with a strength that was like a cataclysm, a disaster.” During the summer, Laura worked in a bar until Theo suggested she could do some temping for his law firm. On her first day, a knife-wielding maniac attacked one of the partners, David Holroyd and carved through Laura’s carotid artery. She was “felled in her tracks, like an animal, like a deer.” Theo had been in court that morning but returned to the office to witness the carnage and his daughter, Laura bleeding to death. He never recovered. Ten years later, a broken Theo, now retired turns up in Jackson’s office wanting closure. From his own bereavement and counselling Jackson knows there were stages you went through: “shock, denial, guilt, anger, depression-and then acceptance.” Theo, he believed, was stuck somewhere near the beginning-even after 10 years. “What did you do when the worst thing that could

happen to you had already happened-how did you live your life then?” Everything from Duty Nothing from Love is the third one. Like Rosemary, Michelle is another teenage mother, saddled with a husband and child at 18 years of age. “She hadn’t bonded with the baby, instead she was shackled by it.” I suppose in her own way she loved them both although she had sacrificed her education and a promising future. She became so meticulous about organising her pathetic and unhappy life that she was regarded by her sister Shirley as a control freak. Once she lost control she became neurotic and aggressive. A violent row with Keith one day and a screaming baby and she lost it. she grabbed the axe and attacked her husband, killing him. She asked her sister to look after the “bug” knowing that she would be put away for life. Jackson gets involved in this case when Shirley asks him to find Tanya. At this point we learn that Michelle has been released and adopted a new identity. Jackson breaks the ethical code by sleeping with Shirley but the more he gets to know her the more his instincts tell him that something is not quite right. He has a bad feeling about her. “Was she a good liar or was she just good at avoiding the truth?” Eventually the truth rears its ugly head and we discover how Keith died and more importantly who killed him. We are told that “anyone’s capable of killing, given the right circumstances.” Binky Rain’s demonic nephew, Quintus Rain seems determined to murder Jackson, then there’s Caroline who is desperate to turn the clock back and start again: “one lost lamb.” Lily-Rose is the homeless girl with yellow hair and a dog who keeps cropping up all over the place searching for something. And there’s creepy Stuart Lappin and perverted Stan Jessop. Plenty to keep you interested. I’ll leave you with one of Jackson’s gems: “ The only time you were safe was when you were dead.” A superb crime thriller. Publisher: Black Swan. Pick up and remove the pruned clippings, especially if you intend to cut the grass under the tree during summer. • remove stakes or relax wires installed on trees planted last fall. Allowing a little swaying of tree stems results in sturdy yet resilient plants. Thin out some branches of trees which have a history of leaf spot diseases. Pruning will improve air circulation and penetration of sunlight, which in turn can reduce the incidence of disease. Remove tree guards or burlap wraps from the trunks of young trees or shrubs. This prevents moisture buildup beneath the wrap, which can encourage rot and promote entry of diseases. • transplant any existing shrubs you want to move before they begin to leaf out. Soil conditions in early spring are favorable to transplants because the soil is more consistently moist, which helps new rooting to expand from the transplant zone and reach out for more nutrients. To transplant, use a spade to find the edges of the main root mass, then dig down and under to loosen the root ball. Dig the new hole several inches wider all around, and add soil amendments such as compost or organic fertilizer. March Wow, summer has arrived and to celebrate we had a great turn out of 38 players for a special day followed by a FREE Barbecue where partners joined all those taking part and how everyone enjoyed themselves. Our Stabeleford competition had three categories today with prizes for the 1st. four in each and of course the usual nearest the pins. The course was again in great condition as it always is but with all the rain we have had recently and now the sun it will get even better. Scores on the whole were fairly low with only 6 players making 30+ points, why?, not sure but if I hazard a guess it was those fantastic

Week Twentythree played 24th March This was the first week of our Easter Egg Scramble and, is usually the trigger for the bowlers to bowl lots of strikes, so that they can claim raffle tickets for our Easter draw. Even with Ulf Grondahl grabbing two tickets, The Dreamers found Caballo Negro to strong and, were defeated 0 – 8. It took a double in the ninth and tenth frames of game three by Dave Haynes, for Right Move Insurance to sneak 2 points from Med Bistro & Bar El Raso. MBB moved to within 2 points of league leaders Team Finland, with the 6 points gained. This was because, in the match of the night, TF took on Splash. G ames one and two were decided by 5 pins and 1 pin, with TF taking the first game and SP taking the second, even with Keijo Liikanen of TF shooting a fantastic 270 scratch second game. Game three saw SP bowling very consistantly and Juanjo Carral, with a 235 and an overall 658 scr series, comfortably took game three, to record a 6 – 2 victory. Los Bandidos took on Juans Warriors, knowing their total pinfall would count towards their League Cup Semi Final match against MBB. Things didn’t go according to plan in game one and, JW grabbed it by 25 pins. This only spurred LB into upping their game and, with Maurice Allen’s 210 and

The semi-final of the cup always brings the best out of Split Happens and, tonight was no exception. Taking on Los Lobos in the league match, SH needed to be at their best, to reach the final. Gary Walsh, with a 256 scr game and 670 h/c series, ably backed up by Marion Haynes’ 212 scr second game and Neil Pipkins 609 h/c series, enabled SH to take the league match 6 – 2 but, more importantly secured the win over TF by 18 pins. There were lots of ‘bowling Belgiums’ when Belgas Torrevieja 2 and Mixers clashed and, it was Ms who came out 6 – 2 winners on the night. Lucky Strikes Sue Duke bowled her season high game of 177 and series 469, to help LS take 6 points off Crazy Pinz. Even CP’s Kari Oppmans 563 scr and 662 h/c series, couldn’t prevent another CP lose. So, the final of the Splash sponsored League Cup, on the 21st April, will see Med Bistro & Bar El Raso take on Split Happens.

Both Paul Matthews and Vicki Connolly had good swims in their two races matching previous best times. Finally in the 4 x 50m Freestyle mixed relay the team continued with their excellent results with a new best relay time of 2:18:81. Club Natacion Torrevieja had a busy schedule this weekend. On Saturday 28th March the younger members of the squad, in the Alevin and Benjamin age groups, were competing in the Municipal Pool San Vincente and on Sunday it was the turn of the clubs Masters in the Municipal Pool Elda. Both teams achieved some outstanding results. On Saturday, competing against 10 of the regions clubs, Vicky Pigneur (12yrs) came first in both her races. In her 200m freestyle she improved her time by 12 seconds (2:37:90) and by 11 seconds in her 400m Medley (6:26:15). Also in this age category Amy Connolly (11yrs) improved upon her 200m Freestyle time by a massive 27 seconds (3:11:53), Vilja Bilstad (12yrs)also improved by 7 seconds (3:08:50). The boys also had some good results, Vitalio Veres (12yrs) improved on his 200m Medley event by 24 seconds (3:06:97) and was placed 4th. Other members of the team had new good swims. With 10 minutes left Sporting survived a goal mouth scramble when they finally cleared the ball off the line with Mazarron supporters shouting for a goal. But Mazarron did take the lead just a minute later when Dani’s drive from outside the area was deflected past the Sporting keeper.

Mazarron won for the first time in six games, edging out Sporting Camposol in a local derby which was played on an atrocious surface before a bumper crowd at the Estadio Municipal. Good football was impossible on the uneven surface and the game only came to life in the last ten minutes when Mazarron scored the winner and Sporting missed a penalty. Sporting Camposol included a number of ex Mazarron players in their team and had the best of the early exchanges with Mazarron being forced to defend resolutely. Stalin then made an excellent run down the left and his cross was just cut out by the Sporting keeper before Tolo could pounce. Mazarron came more into the game and both Tolo and Diego had shots saved. Three minutes before the interval good work by Jose Da on the left led to a near post shot being well saved by Mazarron keeper Carrasco. Just two minutes later Mazarron took the lead when Tolo hit a good shot from the edge of the penalty area into the corner of the net for his 27th goal of the season. The second half continued in a similar dull fashion until Sporting Camposol equalised after an hour. Mazarron lost possession on the edge of their own area and Jose placed a right foot shot wide of Carrasco to bring the scores level at 1-1. Then after 65 minutes Mazarron were denied an obvious penalty when Tolo surged past two defenders before cutting back inside only to have his legs taken away. The referee, however, had other ideas and waved play on.
